Beneath the Cross.

_____

Beneath the cross of Jesus,
I lay me down to weep,
And ponder o’er his matchless grace
Displayed on Calvary’s steep.

Beneath the cross of Jesus,
I lay me down to pray,
Nor look in vain for blessings,
In God’s appointed way.

Beneath the cross of Jesus,
I lay me down to hear
The welcome sound, “It’s finished,” —
So sweet to sinners ears.

Beneath the cross of Jesus,
I lay me down to rest,
Here foolish doubts and fears
Are banished from my breast.

Beneath the cross of Jesus
I lay me down to love;
His blood the bond of union,
Twixt saints below — above.

Beneath the cross of Jesus,
I lay me down to feast
On Him, my bleeding sacrifice,
My Altar, and my Priest.

Beneath the cross of Jesus,
I lay me down to sing,
The grove has lost its victory
And death its venomed sting.

Beneath the cross of Jesus,
I lay me down to die,
Till in the chariot of His love
He bears me up on high.

Then seize my harps of gold
And tune it loud and long;
The cross of Jesus crucified,
My everlasting song.

THE ONE THOUSAND YEARS REIGN.

Binding and Loosing of Satan.

_____

(Continued from Mar. 2.)

_____

AND I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. — Rev. 20:1-3. Here is language which, unless interpreted by the Holy Spirit, and in the light of all other lines of truth that bear upon the subject, is quite sure to lead the mind into a false theory. In the interpretation of the Word, we find it necessary to adopt certain principles, or rules of interpretation, among which are these: first, receive all scriptures in their most literal and natural sense, except where the context, and the general weight of truth make it necessary to give it some other, or symbolic interpretations. Second, to explain scripture deeply vailed in mysterious and symbolic language in the light of truth plainly revealed. And never interpret obscure truth so as to conflict with plain unvailed New Testament teaching; or in more simple words, interpret that which is mysterious by that which is plain and obvious, and not receive a doctrine which appears to be taught in difficult symbolism, which would conflict with plain unambiguous truth. That these principles of interpretation are sound and safe, we think no reasonable mind will deny. And yet we can abundantly demonstrate by many lines of divine truth that both the doctrines of pre and post millenniun disregard the exceptions in the first rule, and utterly ignore the second rule. It is a plain fact which we have heretofore shown by the word, that the loosing of Satan after the expiration of a thousand years is followed by the battle of Gog and Magog, and that the same great conflict immediately follows the calling of God’s elect out of mystery Babylon, which is now in progress It is also a fact which we will hereafter show by many unmistakable scriptures, that the present is the last dispensation of time, that it will ter minate with the second advent of Christ, which all signs proclaim near at hand, hence the Scriptures exclude a thousand years literal reign of Christ on earth before his second coming. Also his coming is clearly pointed out as the end of time, the instant of the literal resurrection of all that are in their graves, both righteous and unrighteous, the time of general judgment, final separations, rewards and punishment. All of which positive New Testament teaching the millennium theory directly conflicts with. So here is a case where many scriptures that are plain and obvious are required to surrender to what we will admit may be very readily inferred from one mysterious passage in the Bible. But this we say is not wise. The plain positive texts must stand unimpeached, and a meaning be sought for the one symbolic lesson that will harmonize with them. This the Spirit of truth enables us to do, and so carry out our second rule.

But before we proceed let us call attention to our first mentioned rule, and the exception thereof. First let us inquire if there be such exceptions, and why. Are there any texts in the Bible that are not to be taken in their most natural and obvious sense? If so why is this? We will let the book answer for itself.

And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: that seeing they may see and not perceive; and hearing they may hear and not understand — Mark 4:11, 12.

At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. — Matt. 11:25, 26.

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. — 1 Cor. 2:14.

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. — John 16:13.

Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit. Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. — 1 Cor 2:9-11. These texts are sufficient to show that God has brought to naught the wisdom of this world by hiding much of his truth beyond the penetrations of the natural eye, and uninspired mind of men. The sense of Scripture therefore is not always that which lies most naturally upon its surface. Not knowing this, many worldly wise, and spiritually blind have taken it upon them to fathom the word of God by the line of their own intellect, and in so doing have exposed their folly. Baxter of England, and his several coadjutors supposing they can unravel prophecy by their own much sense have showed their utter nonsense. Nearly every prediction he has made the time of which has arrived, has proved a fallacy. He declared there would be the greatest war in Europe there ever was, not possibly later then 1892. And now that this with many other predictions has failed who is fool enough to believe that Baxter knows that Christ will come exactly at three o’clock April 11, 1896, which he has announced as an absolute certainty? Prof. Totton has spun out several books in which he has displayed the most wonderful skill in drawing many very positive conclusions from the slightest shadows, and sometimes almost wholly created promises. His motives seem to be good, and his scientific historic researches, very profound, and those who have time to read his effort to do what uninspired brains never can do, will get some benefit from the same. But Prof. Totton makes no pretentions of teaching any thing by the aid of God’s Spirit, nor does he once intimate any acquaintance with Christ, except historically. His applications of the Scriptures are dreadfully at random, as must be expected from all unilluminated minds.

In the name of Jesus we stand upon his word, and believe that the things of God are only known by the Spirit of God. And moreover we do believe what Jesus promised, that the Holy Spirit does guide into all truth those who are pure in heart, and led by his wisdom. And upon his most sacred unfoldings we wholly depend. What he has shown us we see and know, understand and teach, and what he has not yet given us we do not pretend to give to others, so we know nothing by ourself.

But cannot we arrive at a correct knowlege and application of propheecy by the study of history? We decidedly answer, No. In the name of Jesus Christ we warn all God’s ministers to abstain from the exposition of prophecy simply by conclusions drawn from history. If we lean upon such sources a hundred conflicting teachings will be heard in babel confusion. If we have grace and humility enough to keep our mouths shut on every point until we are therein taught of God, we will speak the same things and keep the unity of the Spirit in the bonds of peace, and the name of God will be glorified. While preaching the word on prophecy last fall in the Wichita, Kan. camp meeting, the Spirit brought to our mind the fact that we have never yet arrived at the knowlege of a single point of prophecy by means of historical research. Every point of prophetic truth that has been given us to really know and with authority apply, has been shown us by the Spirit of God, before we knew the corroborating annals of history. By the comparison of prophetic announcements and historic records, men may arrive at apparently well drawn conclusions. But we say again in the name of Jesus, you cannot thus know the truth. After all you only have conjecture. By extending your researches, you may find specification and marks of agreement in the history of another century that agree equally: and but the voice of God alone can enable us to know the truth with any degree of certainty. For instance, we heard a brother deliver a discourse on prophecy in which he made a certain date very prominent as the point of time from which to calculate the rise of the apostasy. He had been reading Advent literature, and got his point there, and the result of his discourse was, it strengthened the idolatry of certain graceless Adventist women who listened with much pleasure to that which propped up their dagon. Now the facts are, no history that we have examined, make A. D. 584, — which if we remember correctly was the date pitched upon — the chief epoch in the rise of the first beast. God forbid that we should have such light conceptions of the solemn and awful responsibility of an embassador of Christ Jesus, that we should deal in opinions when we have plenty of truth to preach, or presume to publish as truth that which is only conjecture. We are aware that we have somewhat taxed the credulity of certain brethren who seem never to have experienced the mighty shocks of the Spirit of God, wonderfully unfolding some deep truths in his word, enabling us, not to arrive at a strong opinion of its meaning, but in the language of Jesus, to “know the truth” and therefore speak with authority. And in fact, so few serve to speak of such precious and positive unfoldings of the word by special illuminations of the Spirit, that we have been tempted of the devil to discontinue our testimony of the same lest some should think we by a false testimony, wish to elevate ourself. But thank God we have been recently strengthened in our faith of the Spirit’s office to reveal by the experience of a brother who has, in answer to much prayer and supplications to God received the positive communications of the Spirit, yea, on the same scriptures, therefore we will not cease to acknowlege what God has done for our souls.

But let us now, alter so long a preliminary, return to the lesson at the head of this article, read it over again. “I saw an angel come down from heaven having the key of the bottomless pit.” Who is this angel? In Rev. 1:18, ‘‘He that liveth ant was dead,” saith, “I have the keys of hell and of death.” Hades, here rendered hell, we admit is not the final, botomless pit, but it is very reasonable to conclude that he who has the keys of death and the intermediate world, also holds the keys to the bottomless pit; for the former two shall be cast into the latter. — Rev. 20:14. The keys of death, and hades and of the bottomless pit, doubtless alludes to Christ’s power, control, and triumph over all these things. It also suggests this fact that what ever infernal powers come up from the pit to tempt and try the children of men, are permitted so to do in the providence of God, to work out a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. And that there was about one thousand years wherein Satan was not permitted to use the nations to destroy men’s lives by the multiplied thousands as before and after, and likewise in which there were but few souls who had spiritual life for Satan to gratify his Satanic appetite in efforts to devour, were matters of divine providence, over which Christ presided; hence this angel who holds the key to the bottomless pit, also, “had a great chain in his hand,” with which he bound Satan a thousand years. That is, his providence controlled in the cessation of martyrdom to a great extent during this long time, and the darkness that covered the earth which bound or limited Satan from the privilege of trying to destroy many souls. These things, we say, occurring under the permissive will, and providential control of Christ, it is thus said that this mighty angel bound Satan and shut him up, namely, limited his operations during that time. How was he bound? By a “great chain.” Now all must know that this was not a literal chain; for a literal chain could not bind a spirit being as Satan is. His binding, therefore, is not to be understood of a literal and entire confinement. But it is a certain limitation of his operations. Now since literal chains would not bind the devil, let us enquire what kind of chains, the scriptures teach, do bind him.

For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment. — 2 Pet. 2:4.

And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. — Jude 6.

“Chains of darkness,” “everlasting chains under darkness.” Here is an answer to the question. Darkness constitutes the chains with which Satan is bound; and we know of no other kind of chains with which the scripture informs us that Satan is bound. Now it must be plain to all intelligent readers of God’s word that darkness, when not relating to the absence of the literal light of the sun, denotes the absence of righteousness, and the moral light of God’s truth. The utter spiritual darkness of hell, will deprive Satan of all his wonted desire to spoil that which is good. There he is “in everlasting chains under darkness.” But if darkness be the chains which bind Satan, and so says the scriptures, then we should expect to find the thousand years that Satan was bound a period of great darkness; and just such a long night has cast its dark shadow over a thousand years of past history. From about A. D. 530, to about A. D. 1530, truly we had a thousand years of “thick darkness.” Thus says Josiah Condor, in his “Story of the world,” found in Church History, by Goodrich, page 478: “What are termed the middle ages commence with the fifth and terminate with the fifteenth century. Of these the first six are denominated the dark ages; but throughout the whole period, Christianity suffered a long eclipse of a thousand years.” A thousand years eslipse, of utter spiritual darkness. All history proves this fact, and who does not know that the true light of the gospel, was hid from the earth, during a thousand years of Rome’s darkest reign? Historians often speak of a thousand years of darkness- that began to break away with the reformation, first into a cloudy day, and finally the sun of primitive truth and holiness bursts forth in the evening light.

Now cannot we see the agreement Detween the prophetic announcement that Satan should be bound a thousand years with chains? The fact stated by two inspired writers that darkness constitutes the chains with which Satan is bound, and the fact of history that there was a thousand years of darkness brooded over the earth?

Again it is evident from Rev. 6:9- 11, and Rev. 20, that the thousand years in which the souls rested, or reigned with Christ, lay between two great periods of persecution. For they were the souls of them that lad been slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held. Rev. 6:10. and their thousand years rest was to extend until their brethren that should be killed, as they were — in another similar time of martyrdom — should be fulfilled. Now read the history of martyrdom by Fox or any other historian, and you will find the Christians slaughtered by the millions under Pagan Rome, and under the Papal rule after the reformation began in the sixteenth century. It is true that hundreds, and perhaps we might say that even thousands suffered death during the

EDITORIAL NOTES.

__________

It is an astonishing thing that antiholiness methodist preachers, in these days of their fallen ism, call in question the fact that John Wesley ever taught the two distinct works of grace. Richard Watson, on page 77 of his history of Wesley quotes from his journal these words: In answer to questions asked by “a serious clergyman” among other things Wesley said, “I believe justification to be wholly distinct from sanctification, and necessarily antecedent to it.”

Any one who will read the history of the Wesleys, or their journal, will be forced to the conclusion that their self-sacrifice, zeal and general righteousness, before ever they were converted, far surpassed the life of the professed holiness preachers in Methodism. When his own father, and the whole congregation at Epworth earnestly begged Wesley to come to that place and take charge of the class, he peremptorily refused, because the position promised ease and affluence. But an invitation to come to America and suffer deprivations and every exposure, he was ready to go at once, and so he did and found much to mortify the flesh. But on his way there he was overtaken in a storm at sea, in which he found he was not saved, and was afraid to die. And after his return to England he said, I went to America to convert the Indians; but O, who shall convert me! Who is he that will deliver me from this evil heart of unbelief? I have a fair summer religion; I can talk well, nay, and believe myself, while no danger is present; but let death look me in the face, my spirit is troubled, nor can I say, “To die is gain.” Some time after this he was definitely converted, and later found the crowning privilege of entire sanctification in God’s word.

A GOOD REPORT.

_____

A traveling preacher by the name of Samuel Zook, connected with the River Brethren sect, visits the church of the living God in Los Angeles, Cal. and makes the following report in Feb. 15, No. of the Evangelical Visitor, the organ of his denomination, which from our acquaintance with the work of the Lord going on in that city, we recognize as having allusion to the saints of the living God. Because so many independent mission efforts have been run in those coast cities, every thing not coming under the head of the well known sects, is denominated a mission. That accounts for the fact that Bro. Zook, as we feel inclined to acknowledge him from the tone of his writing, called that living Church of God a mission. In fact the work is sometimes so denominated by the saints themselves. The reason he speaks of them as having no preacher, is doubtless because Bro. Byers was at that time in San Diego, as he writes under date of Dec. 29. The following is what he says:

“We returned, the same evening, to Los Angeles and attended, as well as the evening before, a holiness meeting, where we found a common but earnest people engaged in the work of the Lord. They hold no collections and have no preachers, but they all preach as they are moved by the Spirit. I can truly say that our hearts were very much drawn out toward them. They go out on the street every evening and sing and pray and talk to the people, and by the time they get through they generally have a crowd around them, when they invite them into their hall for further services. By this means they attract the attention of many and get them under the influence of the Gospel, and numbers are rescued from drunkenness and other vices, as we learned by many powerful testimonies while in their meeting. Especially was our sympathy drawn out towards some young persons who, by their earnest testimonies and experience, showed that they are devoted Christians. They are a plain, unassuming people and make no worldly display, but I am persuaded display the powers of the Holy Spirit. They showed great respect for us and as we felt we should leave our testimony for Christ with them, we met with many hearty greetings from them after services. The second evening we were with these people, a man came into the meeting who claimed he had just arrived from Scotland. After taking his seat in front he took the first opportunity to speak. In his testimony he had considerable to say as to what a nice man he was, and that he always tried to do what was right, and after arriving in the city he had heard of this place and now he was here and wanted to help to work for the Lord. He failed, however, to say anything about, or point to the time of, his conversion. As soon as he was through, one of the brethren said, Let us pray. And kneeling down, he began to pray something like this: O Lord, here is a man who claims he has just arrived from Scotland. Now, Lord, we don’t know how much salvation there is in Scotland, but we do know that he needs salvation. Oh, break up the great deep of his heart and show him that he is a sinner, and give him repentance, etc. After prayer the man looked very sober and soon left the room, but I was told by one of the members that he left a note on the table saying he was under conviction and that he was coming back again. I think I learned an important lesson from this incident.”

MY EXPERIENCE.

Grand Junction, Mich, Mar., 20, 1893.

To all the Dear Saints of all the Various Tongues, in the Name of Jesus, Greeting: Grace unto you and peace be multiplied. This spring morning finds me fully saved and sanctified. I went out into the open air this morning and Jesus filled my heart with such a glory and joy unspeakable that I could do nothing but shout his praises. I fell prostrate on my face before him thanking him for his wonderful goodness to me. I do testify that we have a wonderful, wonderful God, a wonderful salvation in the glorious evening light. I am overflowing with love, joy and peace that sometimes I can scarcely realize my existence in the body. I can say with Paul, “I know a man in Christ, whether in the body I cannot tell or whether out of the body I cannot tell, God knoweth, such an one caught up to the third heaven,” how that he was caught up in the paradise and heard unspeakable words; of such an one I will glory: yet of myself I will not glory.

Long was I burdened for my own soul; finally I became the most miserable creature under the sun, fell into a wretched condition. I had been saved once, really saved, was a so called Pietist, but then joined different churches, had always an indescribable longing in my soul; lived the life of a child of God for awhile, sinned and repented, sinned and repented, — such was my experience. I grew colder and colder, once in a while reviving a little, preached for about two years, but I was not faithful nor in any way steadfast. I would do at times all I could and all I had light upon but soon fell back again. My irresistable longing and complete restlessness drove me all around in the world, from one place to another, three months, six months, sometimes only weeks I would stay at one place. Sometimes realized my condition, sometimes not, prayed always earnestly and received many direct answers, often miraculous answers to my prayers. Driven down South I had no rest down there, and thought there, things would be all right, the further south near Mexico the better. I thought I could get good and brave there. But oh, thou miserable deceiver, Satan! How he drove me from one sin into another, restless, unsatisfied, discontented. I sailed around in the world. South did not suit me. I fell out with the people, hoped if I would go North among the refined and highly cultured people, among which I used to live, all would be right again. A while I stayed in an Evangelical Pietistic seminary where the director proved to be a striking example of a low and humble follower of Jesus. Yet even him I despised at times, got discontented there, received light on baptism, was baptized in the Baptist sect. Lived in full peace one month, then the old dance began again. In one of their seminaries, the most famous one in the U. S. with the most learned professors I was sent and even there discontented, dissatisfied, in spite of all culture and surrounding splendor and comfort, in spite of their palaces of so-called churches, their pomp and refinery. The 24th of Nov., hail to that day, shoutings of glory to Jesus, I got hold of the GOSPEL TRUMPET, the blessed evening light Trumpet through a dear child of God. Bro. Burghardt of L. — Glory to Jesus! At once like a flash of lightning it went through my soul. That is the church of God. These are the people thou seekest, there you will be fully satisfied. As a call was made for a German Editor the Lord impressed dear Bro. Burghardt whom God may abundantly bless, that the Lord wanted me there, that it was for me. After prayer and correspondence with dear Bro. Byrum, things were settled and as the Lord led me, I had prayed Him to lead me out of all sects. He led me to this place, Grand Junction. I was received with a hearty welcome and felt at home for a little while, but soon the devil was raging again. And oh how he did get hold of me this time! He tried every way to overthrow and ruin me entirely, to say nothing of his fiery darts to get me back into the Baptist church again where I had made arrangements already to be taken back again. I hated almost everything; was dissatisfied, disgusted, did not like this or that, nor even some of the dear saints. I had quite a time here. The meals would never be good enough for me. The dear brethren, oh they were nothing compared with my big self. I was the only one, I even doubted their salvation. I was puffed up, exalted, and not polite, a complete example of a man possessed with a thousand devils and yet praying and deeply thinking to be a true child of God. A warning to all! It seems I was a burden to those around. I cannot expose the devil enough. What desires, wantings, longings in put in to my heart. Oh wretched man I was! I cried out like Paul before he was delivered from inbred corruption as he relates it as an experience of his past life. “Oh wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death.” Satan was ruling my actions, thoughts and deeds. I was doing all to please him, yet I could not see it. I thought was a very true child of God. I had blessed hours, during which the devil had no power over me at all, but as they fled by, all the devils hurried back again into this temple and it was worse than before. Dear Bro. Byrum and especially Sisters Shoffner and Fink, whom I could not bear first at all. God bless them abundantly, prayed and made it pretty warm for me. An unseen power drove me out into our God’s nature and not knowing that they prayed for me in a special manner. I had awful times, cried unto God, threw myself (but not with overflowing and exceeding joy) on the ground, felt peace awhile, was afterwards all the same again. I was wanting piano music, concerts, festivals, socials, invitations through refined gents and ladies such as I found in section.

I kept grumbling, murmuring and complaining about all things, and mention it to my shame, as it is written “whose God is their belly.” I made mine so and at the same time I was always struggling to have my mind, knowledge, wisdom, sciences ruling over my flesh, because the flesh lusted against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh, and these are contrary the one to the other, etc. I grew colder and colder and the last two weeks I was, it seems to me now, an almost hopeless case. God has given me fair talents and I had made up my mind to leave here, but the Lord, by his Spirit made known to Bro. Byrum all about my intentions although I had never mentioned it to anyone. I expected to go someplace and work in the line of education, or take some scientific high position and probably preach afterwards again. As I was just about to leave, I had packed my books already. Wednesday morning the 15th of this month, I was called in to dear Bro. Byrum and the dear sisters and they talked to me, being very much in earnest about my soul. (Sie redeten mir ins Gewissen!) Oh how they plead with me, showing me myself as I was, and that there was no blending of the Spirit. I realized all that, but feeling no accusation within I thought I was all right, and was too honest to cover the deep abyss with a sham consecration, and said after they had prayed with me earnestly that I would ask the Lord to show me my condition. The dear saints of God had been fasting and praying for me at different times. In the afternoon I went out into the cold stormy nature, and as the Lord convinced me and I realized that the wrong I had done, had separated me from my dear God. I plead with God for forgiveness of

Page 3

all, for justification. I was so burdened and felt to be the chief of sinners (Mir fielen alle Suenden ein.), that I fell on the deep snow and lay there until a voice said to me “Rise, thy sins are all forgiven, do not expose thy body to cold any longer,” (mutwillig.) Bless the Lord! I knew that Jesus was my Savior and had died just for me that I might live.

Weston, O., March 18, 1893.

Dear Trumpet Readers: May the Lord bless you all, is my prayer. We are still saved and sanctified, all on the altar to do the will of the Lord. We are at Weston now in company with Brother and Sister Bolds and Brother Tubbs, in the battle for the Lord. We ask all the saints to pray for us and the work at this place that God may use us to his own glory, and we may be kept in the order of the Lord at all times.

Broughton, O., March 14, 1893.

Dear Saints: My testimony is this morning that I am saved and kept by the power of God, and walking in all the light that God lets shine upon me. Our last report was from Latty, Ohio. About a week ago we had just opened meeting there. We held there one week and returned to Broughton again on Monday, and opened meetings again in the hall last evening, and had a goodly turn out to hear the word. The dear Lord did wonderfully use us in preaching the word. To him we give all the glory. Praise God for victory over the devil! Two at the altar last evening for the forgiveness of sins. We expect to remain here as long as the Lord wills. We ask all the saints of the living God to pray for the Lord to bless the labors here, and that God will always keep us low down at the feet of Jesus, always doing the will of the blessed Master.

Your brother and sister all on the altar,

Dear Saints: We are all enjoying good health and much of the presence of the Lord. The meeting at Shellhammer’s, was a victory. About twenty or thirty consecrations in all. The meeting at Apollo, Pa. was equally blessed. About thirty-five consecrations. This was a new place, but being only a few miles from the other place, many false reports had reached there before us, yet our almighty God was with Us and confounded our enemies. The sect closed the meeting house, but the work of salvation went on and we left there with many under conviction, and the people are anxious to build a house in which to worship God. I came to this city yesterday evening and preached in Old Liberty at M. E. house to many hungry souls. Several consecrated. Over one year ago I preached here, after which they expelled the preacher here in charge, but so many of the members clung to him, so they rented the lecture room every Friday night and the work has continued. Several are sanctified and have got clear out of Babylon. We are here looking up a boat for the Floating Bethel. We may start in a few weeks. Address us at Kittanning, Armstrong Co., Pa. Bro. Daugherty has gone to Fern, Pa., and Bro. Jacobson to Dawson, Pa.

Your humble trusting brother.

Anthony, Kan.

To all Father’s family scattered abroad, Greeting: We are all well and joyful in glory. Closed meeting south of Anthony, March 13, with a blessed ordinance meeting at night. Forty-five participated. The mighty power of God was present. Six at the altar. The dear Lord gave us a glorious meeting from first to last. We found things in a sad condition when we came. But we found the dear ones teachable and willing to measure up to the word, and the result was, freedom came and the fellowship of the Spirit was restored. Zion put on her strength and quite a number of precious souls were born into the kingdom and a number of them went on to perfection. O praise our God! On Sabbath, fourteen were buried with Christ by baptism. Truly God did a grand work, we had meeting day and night. Souls at the altar at most every service. Some of us have been afflicted but the dear Lord has wonderfully healed us. We came back to Bro. Prouse’s, north of Anthony, and had a glorious ordinance meeting. Twenty-one took part and one sanctified. Will go to Arkansas City and hold forth the truth near there for a season, and from thence to Oklahoma, the Lord willing. Pray much for us and God’s precious work trusted in our hands, and when you pray, believe, for it is the prayer of faith that God answers.

Yours in the one body, sanctified and kept,

Dear Saints: May the blessings of God be with you. Wife and I left home March 4, for Ceylon, and began meeting in the neighborhood of Bunker Hill in the name of king Jesus, and are happy to report another grand victory. The Lord so helped us to preach his word in the power of the Holy Ghost, that the mouths of the gainsayers were stopped and conviction rested upon the people from the beginning. Many acknowledged the truth, but some are not yet willing to pay the price. We have now set the battle in array in this place where great darkness prevails. There is a Mennonite class here of about five hundred, all German, yet some of them can understand English. A German minister is needed very bad here, as nearly nine-tenths of the people are German. One dear brother and minister, also being a German, received light through the Gospel Trumpet. We believe he is wholly sanctified: He saw that the sects were contrary to the word of God and has been the means of getting a number converted, and are standing at present outside of any sect. Had conversation with the brother, and I believe he is a man of God. We are looking for Sister Belle Stetler to help us and also others. We do not know how long we will be here. After we are through here we go about six miles east. Our address at present is Berne, Ind. Any one wishing our labors, address us at this place.

I remain your brother washed in the blood of the Lamb,

Dear Saints of God: May the peace of God abide in you at all times. Amen. We bless God for all the love wherewith he has loved us, in saving our souls from all sin and keeping us in him each day, free from all the evil of this world. Bless his dear name! We began meeting in Scott Town, O., in an empty store room, made ready by a few of the town who wanted to hear the truth. God helped us most wonderfully in presenting the truth to the people of that place. Sectism was terribly shaken. No one got salvation for they would not give up their sins. I suppose this little town will weigh in the balance with any town of its size in the United States for picnics, festivals and shows. “They which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” Gal. 5:19-21. At the close of that meeting we moved about three miles from there to a meeting house owned by the M. E’s. and Christians, where God most wonderfully blessed our labors in the salvation of eight dear souls. Five out of the Methodist and three out of the Christian sects. At the close of the meeting six happy saints went down into the river and were baptized with Jesus. Oh how it did fill our souls to see them made free from Babylon! The same evening we had ordinance meeting and again God blessed our souls, insomuch that we were made to leap for joy. Dear Bro. and Sister Kerr, who have been so faithful in seeking the good of the people of this place, were happy with the thought of a few hearts made free in those parts with whom they can meet and worship God in the truth. May God bless the dear people for all their kindness to us.

We are your sanctified brother and sisters,

Dear Saints of God Greeting: May the grace of our blessed Lord rest upon you continually and may you all be kept pure within, with victory over all the works of darkness, and continually advancing in the wonderful evening light. Oh what a wonderful age we are in, and how essential it is that we make rapid strides, for our God is marching on. How it fills my soul with praises to hear of the great host that are being called into the gospel work. God bless a the dear workers. Brother and sister, go forth in the name of Jesus, he’ll supply thy every need, and carry the glorious tidings to every land. Let us hasten the coming of the Lord by carrying the gospel to every nation. Well bless the Lord, I am very glad to report victory in the name of Jesus. The Lord is keeping me continually and I am persuaded that there is nothing able to separate me me from his love. I have not written to the Trumpet for some time, as Bro. Achor has been doing the writing, but I feel led of God to tell you something of the leadings of the Lord with me, since I last reported. My call to the foreign work was so sudden, that I had no time to visit home, or bid goodby to friends, but thank God! the call found me ready. But dear ones, I shall never forget the 7th day of Jan., the day I left America. Some boast that they are ready to die at the stake, which is all very well if you never expect to be bound to it. Others say they are willing to forsake all and go wherever he may lead, but really you can hardly get them a hundred miles from home, and when they are away for a short time, they soon think of wife, or children or friends and back they go to their homes. Oh dear ones, forsake means more than to leave for a few days; but I tell you a good way to find out whether you are consecrated or not is to get your ticket at New York, get on the great steamship and then watch the land as it fades from your view, and then know that you are leaving your country, your friends, your loved ones, leaving al the dear saints, leaving all that you have learned to love, perhaps never to see them again until the judgment day. Then dear ones, you can realize what consecration is. If you do not believe it, try it. As I stood on the boat looking back at old America, I thought of my dear mother, my loving father, my dear brothers and sisters, I thought of my childhood days, of all the dear saints and the many precious times we had had together, and the probability of never seeing you on earth again, and then I realized how dear you were to me. Then I looked forward to the dark countries, where we were bound for, and for a moment it seemed as though my heart would break, but then I realized that Jesus was by my side and this promise came to me, “I’ll go with you all the way.” Well I do bless God that I am dead to all, and I am sure that I have forsaken all for the sake of the gospel, and now I claim his promises. Well when I left America with Bro. Achor, I expected the Lord would have me go with him all the way, and I am yet willing and ready to go wherever He may lead. But since we came here and see the great field now open here in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the Lord has shown me, also Bro. Achor feels the same, that I am to stay here and do what I can to open the work here. Bro. Achor will probably go on to other fields in a short time. Now I am praying God to send a company of workers to join me in the work here. I believe Bro. and Sister Rupert are being called, also I pray God to send Bro. Daugherty or some tenor singer, also if the Lord leads, some good soprano, or alto singer. My God make the choice! Any one feeling led of God to come, please let me know at once. There is much need of a good strong band of singers and workers here, those that are filled with the Holy Ghost and fire, that have the “go through” in them and are consecrated. I have just returned from visiting some of the country villages and find that there are many halls that can be rented and that the people in general are tired of sectism and are ready for something new. There are a great many people all over the country, that are leaving the sects and right now is the time to reap this country and we are looking for a great and glorious work to be done here this summer. Now brethren, I am going to tell you how the Lord has shown us to start the work. In the first place we will have to rent halls, and the rent for halls is rather higher than in America. We cannot expect a meeting house or a school house, and then again we will have to board ourselves and pay our own expenses, because the people here are not prepared to accommodate us, as in your country, so we will have to go into a place and rent a hall and then rent a house to live in, and we do our own cooking. We are looking for hundreds of souls to be saved here this summer, but before we can do anything we must have help financially. Now we are praying God to furnish us with three hundred dollars and I pray God to burden some one at once. We have a debt which we wish to get settled this spring, also are in need of clothing. Now we are sorry to have to mention these things and we do not do it to complain in the least, nor is our faith weakened, for we have trusted God and shall continue to do so. We wish to see the work established in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales this summer if possible. Dear brethren, do continue to pray for us. Oh if you only knew the troubled condition of the people here. There are thousands of people in this city alone, that are walking the streets barefooted, half naked, friendless, homeless and Godless, with no place to sleep, no bread, no hope of heaven, with no one to speak a word of cheer or kindness to them. God bless you all. Anyone desiring to write to us please address us at 137 St James St., Liverpool, England, as that will be our future address.

Yours in Christ,

W. J. Henry.

Dear Saints: This my first testimony that I am sending you. It has not seen three weeks since I enlisted in the army of Christ, and when I did enlist I went for life. Dear brothers and sisters, I ask you in the name of Jesus through the Trumpet to help me pray for my husband until he sees where he is, and will come out on the right side. HEALTH DEPARTMENT

__________

MEDICINE.

_____

This part of the subject comprehends more than most people are aware. People run for the doctor and after medicine often when if they would leave off some of those abuses they are practicing by excessive living and extorting their body, they would use none, also, often people run after it when they do not need any at all and would be far better off without it, for by taking the first, places the system in such a condition which necessitates more, and eventually produces an actual diseased condition of the system.

Medicina (from MEDEOR), to cure. Under this then is included such agents as will cure. These are such as act in harmony with the law of life to restore a diseased or abnormal condition back to a normal healthy or physiological condition, without harm or injury upon the animal economy. Consequently would be a sanitive agent. Some teach that a poison is a good medicine, if used with care. But I with the light on God’s holy word and the true science and principles of life as taught by Sanitive medication, Hydropathy and the word of God, am compelled to protest against it, and state the fact that a poison is not a medicine; which now I propose to demonstrate to a certainty, that I may show the absurd habit of running after M. D’s and spending God’s money for what you are better off without.

A poison is not a medicine. Why? Because a medicine cures, or restores an abnormal condition back to a normal, or a diseased, back to a healthy or physiological condition. A poison destroys life and tissue, deranging the organized tissues and destroying the power of life and health, viz., morphine, one of the most popular agents used by doctors is a narcotic poison. They say it in large closes is a poison but in small doses it is a stimulant. That is the height of nonsense and ignorance. If it is a stimulant in small doses it will be a greater stimulant in large doses in proportion to the amount introduced, and if a poison in large doses it is a poison in small doses in the same proportion to the amount introduced. One says it does stimulate in small doses, or increase the circulation. I admit it does increase the circulation in small doses, but it is only a provoked action. If a thief enters your bed room in the night to steal your property, how quick you attempt to drive him out if you can. Then on the same principle the thief stimulated you to an increased action. No, he provoked you to an increased action to thrust the enemy out of your abiding place. Just so with morphine. It is an enemy (poison), to this body we live in and when the enemy is introduced into the house the information regarding the presence of the enemy being recognized by the sentinels the nerves, the information is conveyed to the chief officer, the brain, and the brain acts upon the wires, the nerves, and calls a rallying of the forces to expel the enemy. The brain by acting on the nerves increases the vital force to throw increased amount of blood to the seat of the trouble for the purpose of expelling the enemy.

This increased action causes an increased amount of heat, inflammation or fever, either local or general, and this increased action they call a stimulation or a stimulated condition, but any intelligent observer certainly can see now, that it is not stimulation, but a provoked action for the purpose of expelling the intruding enemy. Consequently morphine does not stimulate, but being an enemy [poison] it provokes the forces to an increased action to throw it out of the system; because it is a disease producing agent and if allowed to remain, will produce disease. It has been demonstrated, practically, by Prof. Redding of college of Indianapolis, Ind., and others, that it is a deadly poison. If you take fresh blood from a live animal and while still fresh and alive under the power of a microscope, drop a little morphine on the blood globules it soon begins to relax and become more inactive and in a short time the globules will begin to decay and break to pieces, so they are destroyed. When morphine is introduced into the stomach and passes into the blood it comes in contact with the globules and soon begins the work of paralyzing the life in the blood and of course destroys some globules, where doubtless the life exists and cannot be regarded as a friend but an enemy, hence not a medicine but a destructive narcotic poison and should be avoided by all, especially saints of God, who are temples of God.

When a person has fever, it is because there is an enemy, or obstruction in the body and the vital force is trying to throw off by rallying, which is called fever, and the increased flow and force of blood distending the blood vessels, they press on the surrounding nerves, which causes pain. The cause is, the vital is doing its duty trying to cleanse the system of the obstruction. The would-be friend is called, he finds the patient suffering great pain and to relieve him introduces some morphine; which binds the sentinels, the nerves, by stupifying them so they are not as able to peform their duty of expelling the obstruction as before it was introduced. Consequently the patient is in a worse condition than before he took it, because the vital force has two enemies now to throw off instead of one, and the last one the worst one of the two. But people will send for the doctor and pour the deadly poison morphine, strychnine, arsenic, belladonna and various others down their friends and say, The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord. When they did it themselves with the poison they gave their darling child, etc. I know what I am talking about, it is not at random, for I have stood by the bedside of friends with lung fever with the sonorous breathing from morphine, and I told them I knew I could cure them if they would stop that, but oh, our doctor gives it and he knows what is best, and the poor man had to go on and die when he might just as well have been cured. I witnessed the scene and because I could not have the privilege of administering to his terrible needs left the room because I could not bear the murderous scene. I never lost but one case of lung fever and that was the only case I ever gave morphine in twelve years practice of medicine, and it is one of the things temperance demands abstinence.

(Continued from first page.)

thousand years, nevertheless the great bulk of martyrdom hangs on the two ends of that dark period of general ignorance and superstitious submission to the rule of the beast. From the beginning of the apostasy until about the close of the fifth century, multiplied thousands laid down their lives before submitting to the corruptions that were being brought in. After that the reign of iniquity became almost universally established, and general ignorance and superstition left but few to dissent from the popish rule, hence, comparatively few were martyred. But the light of the reformation caused a thirst for freedom to rise again, which, in Rome’s attempt to repress caused the martyrdom of millions of men, and a short period at least, of shedding of holy blood for Christ’s sake, may yet be looked for.

Beloved readers, cannot you now see where to locate the thousand years of the reign of the souls of martyrs? Two great rivers of blood flow at its ends. Satan was in a certain sense bound during the time of their reign. He was bound by chains, and the chains that bind him is that of darkness, and there was a thousand years of thick darkness, extending over the very period that span the two great periods, of martyrdom. How wonderful the harmony of heaven’s truth when we get hold of the correct end to unwind it! More to follow, as we have time.

But praise the Lord, He knew all about his own business. When men (doctors) could not help it, he by his mighty healing power, did the work, tor which I give him all the praise.
