“Do Not Grieve the Holy Spirit,”

—:o:—

“And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.” — Eph. 4:30.

D. S. Warner.

“Do not grieve the Holy spirit,”
Children of the Living God.
He must lead you every moment —
Guide you into all His Word.

Chorus — O my brother, let us never,
Grieve the pure and gentle Dove:
Let us sweetly walk together,
In the harmony of love.

“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit;”
Let Him cleanse you pure as day,
Only in a holy temple,
Will the blessed Spirit stay.

“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit;”
O how sensitive and pure.
Every thought and word that’s evil,
In His sight He can’t endure.

“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit;”
But obey Him all the time:
Meek and lowly, live in Jesus,
If His glory in us shine.

“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit;”
Then in bonds of perfect peace,
He will keep us all a unit.
And His blessed fruits increase.

“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit;”
Heart and all, to Him resign.
O what glory in His favor,
Precious Spirit, Thou art mine.

THE GLORIOUS HOLY WAR.

-:o:-

DEAR readers of the Trumpet: — This morning finds me rejoicing in the love of God. With a heart hull of gratitude to my Savior for His wonderful saving, healing and keeping power. O it is wonderful to be saved of God, and to be saved from every thing but God. I want to confess that I did not honor God in testifying to the healing power at the Bangor Camp Meeting. I was passing through severe temptations, and that old serpent the devil, did cheat God out of what, was due Him. I have felt His chastening hand wonderfully, but I know God has, forgiven me. Heb. 12:3-11. “My son, despise not thou the chastening; of the Lord, nor faint when thou all rebuked of Him: For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth.

If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons: for what son is he whom the Father chasteneth not?

But if ye without chastens, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of Spirits, and five? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but He for our profit, that we might be partakers of His holiness. Now no chastening for the present seems he joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby,” I do thank God for the chastening hand, it always proves a blessing to my soul, sinking me deeper into the heart of God.

Two years ago the 3th of June I reached I the Bangor Camp Ground: with a sin-sick soul, and a body wrecked with disease. I had always determined in my heart that if I ever made a start to serve God, I would be an old fashioned christian. So I began seeking God in earnest, and I found Him, first in the pardon of my sins, and on Sunday night, the 8th, I gave up the ghost and died to all but Jesus. Oh how I do thank God for that death. God so completely took my will, that I have seen nothing of it since. The next after-noon about 5 o’clock, by the laying on of the Elders’ hands and prayer, Bro’s Warner, Fisher and Cole. God touched me with the healing power. Praise the name of Jesus! The case that had exhausted the skill of eight different physicians, was healed almost instantly by God. Since that time I have had good health and the unlimited use of my eyes. It had been about ten years since my eyes began to trouble me. And eight years since I had read or sewed any, worth speaking of, and for five years and five months previous to my healing I was in such a terrible condition physically, I was unable to do anything. I was so weak I was obliged to lie down the most of the time. During this period, my eyes were so effected I was unable to keep them open but a very little: but God has given me a sound body. Praise His name! I have rode from forty- seven to fifty miles a day for two days in succession, and stood it about as well as the strongest. And since last January have been working for the Lord. Meeting twice and sometimes three times a day, and generally out quite late at night, very often walking one mile and a half. Sister Nannie Kigar and I have did the washing and ironing for six. And generally assisted with the house-hold work where-ever we were stopping. I speak of this only to glorify God in the strength He has given me.

I want to speak of our trip to Prospect Ind. The brethren from Beaver Dam, Bro’s Barr and Edwards, carried the little band from that place to Sweetser, Grant Go. Ind. by lumber wagon. We started five a.m., reaching our destination about nine p.m.. We had a glorious time by the way, praising God, and singing those beautiful songs. About two miles beyond Roann Ind. we drove in at the edge of a beautiful piece of wood and stopped for dinner. We placed the seats in a circle, and spread our dinner upon Fathers green carpet, then thought we would praise Him with a song, supposing we were alone in the woods. In a few moments we were surrounded with cattle, there must have been at least twenty-live or thirty, with their heads up and their eyes wide open, gazing at us. We felt that God had put the love of music in these dum animals, and we gave them two or three songs. Mother Smith then asked God to bless the food, and all thanked Him in our hearts for the same. After the horses had finished their dinner, we pursued our way rejoicing, because we had Jesus in our souls, and He made melody through us to the Father.

The next morning the Beaver Dam Brethren returned home, and Bro’s Will and Elihu Bragg brought us to Prospect, Jay Co.. We started at 7 a.m., it was a beautiful morning; the recent rains had laid the dust, and we had pike roads most of the way, making the traveling delightful. In the afternoon the clouds began to gather blackness, and in a short time a terrible storm was upon us. The rain came down in torrents, drenching us through and through. The wind was furious; it seemed almost every moment as though it would carry us up. Then the hail stones came down so thick, the horses refused to go. We were seemingly in the midst of an ocean of water. The recent heavy rains had flooded the country, washing away several bridges. We had quite an adventureous trip, forded one river, and while pulling us through a deep creek, the horses broke from the wagon, leaving us in the water. This was about two hours after the storm, but we were able to get to land, and while the men were fixing the wagon, we gathered hail stones by the handsful in the fence corners. Well, I am satisfied that none but the pure in heart, could have relished such a storm. We did enjoy it; and God so filled our hearts that we praised Him through it all; and when the wind was blowing the fiercest, the calmness in our souls was indescribable. We knew God had power to prevent the storm: but in His wisdom, He saw it was just what we needed, and His will being ours, we thanked Him for it; and left the consequences of our getting wet in His hands, confident that He would work it out for our good.

After the storm, it turned quite cold. We had thirty miles yet to drive: but we had the holy fire burning within us. We reached Bro. Isaac Key’s about 12 o’clock that night, waking Bro. and Sister K. with the song, “O ’twas love, ’twas love that found out me.” The next morning, Saturday May 15 we arose feeling refreshed after a few-hours rest. Not one of us feeling any the worse for our exposure of the previous day. O what a wonderful God Let us praise Him for His goodness, and for all His wonderful works to the children of men.

We drove out to Prospect that morning, six miles, and to our surprise and joy met Bro. and sister Fisher, who had come with Bro. Warner. Our hearts were made to rejoice to meet the deaf saints at Prospect with whom we had labored in the Lord fast January. We had a glorious time and witnessed the salvation of many precious souls. May God keep and strengthen each one of those dear saints, is my prayer.

Monday May 24th were turned to Sweetser, and one week from that day Brother Benny Devor, who had accompanied us from Prospect, came down with measles. He returned home, but God carried him through so wonderfully that he recovered in time to attend the Bangor meeting.

On Thursday I was feeling so bad, I gave up and went to bed. Late in the afternoon Bro. David Leininger and Bro. Dan Bryant came from Beaver Dam for us. May God, in His goodness, keep pure, and greatly bless the Church at Beaver Darn, who have so abounded in their kindness to God’s little ones: but they cannot help it, for they are full of God, and God is full of goodness. When I learned that the brethren had come, I tried to sit up, but was so weak and faint, I was obliged to go to bed again. That evening Bro. Leininger and. sister Smith drove out. I was at Bro. Elihu Bragg’s two miles and a half from Bro. Will’s: before they left-they felt led to lay on hands and ask God to rebuke the disease. I was in a deep night sweat. My clothes were nearly as wet as though they had been dipped in water. While they were praying the Spirit led Bro. David to pray for ray healing. My faith did not take in healing, but it took in strength enough to get up and go with the little ones. Alter removing my damp clothes, I returned with them lo Brother Will’s. It was about twelve clock when we retired that night. Tasked God not to let me sweat any more that night, and when I arose in the morning my clothes were perfectly dry. On Praise God! my heart goes out in gratitude to Him for His love, who is so willing to hear and answer prayer. “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but was in all points tempted like as we are.” Oh how precious that is! May God abundantly reward dear Bro‘s Will and Elihu and their kind families, for their kindness to us. That morning I felt able to accompany the saints to Beaver Dam, I have not rode the same distance more comfortable than I did that day. We started 3:45 a.m., and reached Bro. David’s about dark. The fire felt very good, I was a little chilly, and in a short time my face began lo burn, and behold the measles commenced breaking out very fast. Bro. Barney Warren was in the same condition. This was Friday night, and we kept our beds until Tuesday. Weill never really understood what the powers of darkness were until the next day. I think now, the devil won afraid God would heal me, for it seemed as though the legions of hell were turned loose on me. The darkness to my spiritual senses was so thick it seemed as though it would almost crush my soul. Mother Smith came up and said she was going to Bro. Secures, I asked her not to go. to stay with me, and she said, the Lord will be with. you. I could scarcely keep the tears back, for it seemed as though God was so far from me. I felt almost afraid to be left alone, for I could feel satan about me so plain, that it seemed as though he would almost carry me off. He tried to make me think if I told any of the brethren how I felt, they would think I had no salvation. I searched my consecration over and over; and could find nothing wrong, I was all on the altar and God had my will: but I could not understand why it was. I knew the brethren felt the darkness, for two different times when they came in, almost the first thing, Bro. John Bryant began rebuking the devil. There was a soreness from my throat to my stomach, for one day and two nights which with the fever seemed almost unendurable. I spake to them about it, and they laid on hands and looked to God for healing. I tried to believe, but it seemed as though my faith could not reach God: but He knew all about it, and in a few moments the soreness was entirely gone. Oh how my heart went out in gratitude to Him. More on account of being conscious of His presence, than for the healing. Bro. Barney was also healed of the same. I then looked to God for strength to resist the devil, and succeeded in getting quite a clear victory. Brother Warner who had left the company at Sweetser, having heard of our sickness came that evening, his presence and faith cheered us all wonderfully, and the next day, Tuesday, they anointed us, and laid on hands in the name of Jesus, and we were instantly healed. Praise, God! Barney got up shouting, but he was to weak to jump. Tubs of water were prepared, and with help the last of the measles were scrubbed off. I was so weak I came near fainting, but looked to God for strength, He gave it. I want to say, that every thing that loving hearts and hands could do, was done for us.

Friday morning we all started for Bangor Mich, reaching there 3 o’clock Saturday morn and again my body was severely afflicted, which confined me to the tent most of the time for a day or two. I then called for the Elders, and again our great Physician verified His promise. But that old serpent clung with such tenacity, that I did not honor God after all He had done for me. He never cheated me out of but one testimony before; and by the help of God, he never will again. I did not get complete victory until Saturday after returning home on Monday. He did all he could to over-throw me, but greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world, and I have come off more than conqueror through Him that loved us! There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to men: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it, — 1 Cor. 10:13. That the trial of your faith being much more precious than of gold that perishes, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ. — 1 Pet. 1:7. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love Him. For know in whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day. —James 1:12.

O I thank God for a complete salvation that satisfies my soul, and saves me just now to the uttermost. Your sister under the blood.

POPULAR UNION.

—:o:—

THERE is a great deal of conventional blowing up of union in the regions of babylon, that is all of the devil. In the latter part of May there was held, the third meeting of what is called a “congress of churches,” in the city of Cleveland Ohio. Several sectarian priests expressed: themselves dissatisfied with denominational-ism, but of course, continue in the carcass. Conventions are being held at Berea Ky. and elsewhere, to “unite the Churches,” as they call it. But God knows nothing of such efforts. God makes no call for the union of the sects. If they were all to unite, He would not own them no more than He does now, and He would still call as loudly for His few real children, to “come out of her” as He does now.

To see wise clerical heads assemble in convention, elect, chairman and secratary, appoint committees, draft programns, vote amendments, and go through all the dead, sensely machinery of sect babylon, and then claim to be out of sectarianism, is sickening.

The devil has no objections to any movement for the abolition of the sect lines, which recognizes the sects, as suitable, if united to constitute God’s Church.

The devil has no objections to any union that is on a plain on which he can ring in too. But this blood and fire, hail-stone thunder and lightning, and earthquake, Gospel of the terrible King of kings, that drives out all devils, cuts off all hypocrites and pharisees, and burns up all wood, hay, stubble and chaff, satan greatly fears, and vigorously assaults. Amen!

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

-:o:-

Waukon, Iowa.

DEAR BRETHREN: – God bless you, and all the dear readers of the Trumpet. The Lord brought me and set me down in this valley of dry bones, they are very dry. The Lord said unto me, ‘‘Son of man, can those bones live?” and I said, “Lord God, thou knowest!” Then said the Lord unto me, “Son of man, prophesy unto these bones,” and tell them of their sins, preach the words of life, blow the Gospel Trumpet in their ears, and they that hear shall-live. So I prophesied as the Lord commanded, and lo! there was a mighty shaking, and a noise among the dry bones, they came bone to bone and there stood up a great army of bones that was dead and dry, which received life into their souls, being quickened by the Holy Ghost. The Lord said unto me, these dead hones are the works of the Free Methodists, this is the F.M. sect, the work of men’s hands; they destroy the work of God, and eat my people up. The F. M’s. have made an awful thing here, they have disgusted the minds of the people toward holiness, not holiness, but what they call holiness, Free Methodism, sectarianism.

They are zealous about outward things, but within they are full of dead men’s bones. They beat the fruit off of the tree, to destroy the free. Because this is in their discipline, and not because they labor to get them saved. But we believe that God’s blazing truth causes the tree to wither, and the fire of the Holy Ghost destroys the fruit by destroying the tree — (the carnal mind). This is the Bible plan. You can never stop the tree from blooming by pulling off the fruit while the free remains. Grub the old sarka foot up, then the tree will never bear any more. I love to see the bail come, but it must be mingled with fire and blood. O bless God! I am all on fire this morning, with the Holy Ghost. Hallelujah! The F.M. priest had quit preaching here, because they never got their purses filled with filthy lucre. Yes, this is the way with the priests of babylon; they do not care for precious souls, but they want their money. Shame on such dum dogs that wont bark unless they are sure they will get pay for it. Jesus says to His ministers, “Go preach my Gospel, (not Free Methodism, nor any other ism) go, is the injunction, Hallelujah they obey.

Praise God for the fire! The meeting here South of town at — school house is going on with victory, glory to God forever! We preached fourteen sermons in the name of King Jesus, and the Word accomplished that whereunto the Lord sent it. There were 9 converted, and 11 sanctified. All of these precious souls are free from babylon sectarianism. God bless them, and keep them true to Him, and firm on the Rock, Christ Jesus.

We came to town and began meeting in the opera house, in the name of King Jesus. Last night there was great interest. We will continue as long as the Lord wills.

Pray for me. Your free brother, washed in the blood of the Lamb, and saved from all sin.

John P. Haner.

LATER.

Menlo, Iowa.

Dear Brethren: — The meeting closed South of town. I went back and preached some four or five times with great victory on the Lord’s side. There were four or five more souls saved. Praise the Lord for victory! On the Lord’s day I baptized 14, and ordained two Eiders, Bro. Marion Barham,, and Bro, Charles Gordon. At night we attended to the ordinances of communion and feet-washing. .We had a glorious time. There are many more under deep conviction, they are all free from babylon.

From there we came to this place, where we expect to open fire on the ranks of the enemy of souls. Pray for me, and the blessed work here and elsewhere. There is some sectarian holiness here, and one or two out of babylon; yet they need straightening up. One preacher, a Baptist, who belongs to babylon. Your Brother, free from all sin. Hallelujah!

AN APPEAL.

We wish to make an appeal to the beloved saints of Godin behalf of dear Bro. Wm. N. Smith who has had the missfortune to loose his horse, which was his only means of travel. Dear Bro. and sister Smith have been seeking out the lost ones in the dark places, and. in the inland towns where there is no rail roads, and many souls have been reached and brought to God; who otherwise would doubtless have remained in sin. Bro. Smith feels that the Lord wants him to continue to travel in this way, and believes the Lord will put it in the hearts of the saints to send a little of their means to help him to get another horse. May God help you Brethren to all do your duty and come at once to the help of this Bro. who is thus left helpless, and not able to reach perishing souls. Any one desiring to help the Bro. and thus glorify God, please do so by sending your donations to the Gospel Trumpet Office. And the same will be forwarded to him.

Dearly beloved Brethren: — God bless you and all the saints every where. Grace mercy, and truth he multiplied. The love of1 God the Father, and of His Son Jesus Christ, our Savior, the fellowship, and communion of the Holy Spirit, our Comforter, rest and abide with you always.

Meeting closed here last night with victory on the side of the blessed Lord. Hallelujah! One precious soul, sister Hunger gave herself to the Lord: God bless her and fill her with the Holy Ghost. Sister Hunter was a backslider in the Free Methodist sect, The work of holiness here was inside of the F. M. sect. There are some 30 or 35 making a profession of holiness. There are some blessed saved people here. God bless them and help them to walk in the light. Yesterday Bro. Hunter left babylon, and returned to mount Zion, the City of the living God. Hallelujah to the Lamb of God for freedom! Brother Hunter is a power for God. O the Lord bless Mm, and help him to stand true for God. Last night the Lord anointed me with the holy anointing, and gave me a glorious message on the Church, the body of Christ. O the sin smiting power of almighty God, the love of God came down our souls to greet, while glory crowned the mercy seat. We preached for almost two hours. Glory to God! He just poured the glory in our souls in mighty floods. There was some who squirmed like a snake with its head cut off, others, in their testimony praised God for the light. There were eighteen or twenty who said they would obey God, and walk in the light. God bless them. They will find those who profess holiness and remain in the sect will oppose them. O that they may live for God and no more for sect. Amen! Pray for me, your saved Bro.,

SANCTIFIED BY THE HOLY GHOST.

-:o:-

DEAR BRETHREN: – Our attention has been called by a friend to a couple of articles of a writer in the (so called) Christian Standard. The heading of one is, “Entire Sanctification,” in the issue of June 5. The other is, “Pursuit of Holiness,” in the June 12.

We wish to expose some ideas in these articles, and show that they did not proceed from God, but are merely the carnal ideas of men. We expect also to give the straight Word of God on this subject, and show how we are sanctified, or made holy.

The author starts out by saying, “He that is sanctified or set apart to God’s service, is wholly consecrated to Him.” This is all true enough, but not the whole truth, and he goes on and says some things that are not according to the Bible. He holds forth the idea that God does not sanctify people, but that our sanctification is our consecration; — that we are to pursue after, and grow into holiness; but that we do not fully obtain it until the end of life. When we condense all that ho says into a few words, we have this; We are sanctified by our life’s work. The very first Scripture he quotes shows that this is not true. Namely, this, “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” — 1 Thes. 5:23. I cannot see why he uses this Scripture, for it proves something he does not want proved. This Scripture shows that God Himself sanctifies us wholly; and that our spirit, and soul, and body can be preserved entire, without blame, till the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We know not the moment, hour, nor day, in which He shall appear; therefore we must be preserved entire, and without blame every moment of our lives. God does this by His Holy Spirit. “Faithful is He that calleth you, who also will do it.” — 1 Thess. 5:24.

Sanctification is what makes us holy, and we cannot be holy until we are sanctified, and this is a second work of grace wrought by the power of God. To get this wonderful cleansing from the adamic nature, and infilling of the Spirit of God, we must consecrate all we have to God, present our bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto Him, which is our reasonable service. We can place all on the altar, (Rom. 12:1.) and the altar will sanctify the gift, (Matt. 23:19.) by our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Rom. 5:2.) “For by grace are we saved through faith; and that not of ourselves: it is the gift of God: Not by works lest any man should boast” — Eph. 2:8, 9.

We find no place in the Bible where we can sanctity ourselves by our works, but we are sanctified by the Holy Ghost. “Not by works of righteousness that we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; which He shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior. — Titus 3:5, 6.

We are sanctified through God’s Truth, and His Word is truth (John 17:17), and Christ is the truth, (John 14:6) and the Word of God is Christ, for “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth.” — John 1:1, 14,

“There are three that bear record in Heaven, the Father, the “Word and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” — 1 John 5:7. So we see that it is Christ that sanctifies us by the Holy Ghost, and we are not sanctified till we do get the Comforter in our hearts, “And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin: but the spirit is life because of righteousness. As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. — Rom. 8:10, 14. When we have the Spirit of God dwelling in us, we must be holy, for our bodies are the temples of God. “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” — 1 Cor. 3:16, 17. “What! know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit which are God’s.” — 1 Cor. 6:19, 20. Behold the kingdom of God is within you — Luke 17:21. “Ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. — 2 Cor. 6:16, Christ dwells in our hearts by faith. — Eph. 3:17.

We are to keep that which is good by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in ns (2 Tim. 1:14). “No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and His love is perfected in us. Hereby know we that we dwell in Him, and He in us because He hath given us His Spirit.” — 1 John 4:12 13, Then, glory to God! we must be holy! for if the Spirit that dwelleth in us is holy the body, which is the temple of the Holy Spirit must be holy also, and we must not defile it. We are made holy when we are sanctified, which is a purifying by the Holy Ghost in our hearts, by which the Adamic nature — the carnal mind and disposition is cast out, and we get the Spiritual mind, or the mind of Christ. “For to be carnally minded is death: but to be Spiritually minded is life and peace. If the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you. He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you. – Rom. 8:6, 11.

We are not to follow after the flesh, but we are to follow after holiness, or be wholly led by the Spirit of God which dwelleth in us, which is holiness. “Christ suffered for us, leaving us an example, the ye should follow His steps.” – 1 Pet. 2:12. “Follow peace with all men, and holiness without which no man shall see the Lord.” — Heb. 12:14.

We see that the Bible standard teaches a radical Divine sanctification. But that Methodist standard teaches only a human work.

We will give a few more of these view that the reader may see the blindness and falacy of babylon, and come out, and keep clear from her. Here is what he says “Holiness is a growth — something to be sought after, pursued as an object of final attainment — the attainment of all this a life work — and is completed only as the result of long and ardent struggles, attended with many blunders and failures – and that fleshly impulses are not killed but only brought into subordination. The conflict between these antagonistic forces goes on through life, and we should cultivate and strengthen the spiritual forces of our nature.”

We think the author of these view needs to die out to himself, and his conceited ignorance, and quit trying to cultivate ins own nature, which is carnal, and instead of his so called spiritual nature but really carnal nature, he should get the Spirit of God, and become a holy temple of God. He should “seek first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness.” I he will first get cleansed and killed out by the tire of the Holy Spirit, he will know something about holiness, and be able to write about holiness, and can them tell people how to attain it. For he will then have an experience which will prove “that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.” But now his testimony is nothing but that of a sinner, rejecting Christ and trying to cultivate an imaginary good in his nature. He says, “We should cultivate and strengthen the spiritual forces of our nature.” Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. Had his language indicated a conflict between his nature and the Spirit of Christ, we should recognize a justified state, according to Gal. 5:17. But he only talks of the conflict in his own nature, one vein of which he imagines is Spiritual nature. But. the natural man is all carnal, “free from righteousness.” And that which he thinks is a good streak in his nature, is simply the influence of God’s grace that seeks to enter his heart, and save his soul. And the good desires of

Page 3

he mind, which are defeated by inbred sin. When he gets soundly converted by faith his ideas will be changed from cultivation to salvation, and he can then seek entire sanctification, which cleansing we get by the Spirit of God, and we are then prepared to do that which is righteous, and be “righteous even as He is righteous.” “He that doeth righteousness is righteous even as He is righteous.” — 1 John 3:7. We can easily do the will of God when we get His Spirit in us to guide as into His Word, and we know we are His temples and His temple is holy, and that is just what God wants us to be — Because it is written, Be ye holy: for I am holy.” — 1 Pet. 1:16

The Holy Spirit, or in other words, the will of God is what sanctifies us, “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification — 1 Thess. 4:3. “By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” — Heb. 10:10.

Sanctification makes us perfect and holy – “for by one offering He hath perfected forever them that are sanctified. – Heb. 10:14. “Now the God of peace that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the Everlasting Covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do His will, working in you that which is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory forever and ever! Amen!

All glory to God and the Lamb forever! am sanctified and kept by the power of be Holy Spirit which dwells in me.

This blind sect priest says, “The fleshly impulses are not killed.” Certainly they are not killed in his heart, or he would now and testify accordingly. We receive is words as his testimony. But we do not receive them as teaching a Bible standid of salvation, though this was the writer’s design.

A sinner has a right to say he is a sinner, but when he tries to overthrow the salvation of God’s Word, this is the work of the devil in him. He says the fleshly carnal) impulses are not killed,” that is, cannot be in this life. But God says, They that are Christ’s have crucified (killed) the flesh, with the affections and lusts.” Gal. 3:24. And the Apostle testifies, “I am crucified (killed) with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.” – Gal. 2:20.

How directly the voice of inspiration contradicts the words of this preacher. He says, “the fleshly impulses are not killed.” But God says, “Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed.” Surely this means killed, and even more than killed. Many other Scriptures teach the same. So the writer has simply failed to die to sin as the Bible teaches all should put off the old man and his deeds.

Your Brother, dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Christ Jesus.

K. G. Wickersham.

Dear Brethren: – I am all on the altar and am saved through the cleansing blood of Jesus. I keep low at the feet of Jesus, and by His mighty power I am kept from sin each day. Praise God! I do praise God that I am free from old babylon, and all her stains. I can praise God and not have any one tell me to stop. Oh praise God for salvation full and free. God’s Holy Spirit bears witness with mine that I am His child. Glory to God forever!

Pray for me, that I stand firm. Your Sister under the blood, saved and sanctified.

Dear Brethren: — My testimony is that I am sanctified wholly to God. It is seldom that I write, but I am making to the center of Zion. It is good to be out in the ocean, but it is better to be so far out that we can see nothing but the Heavens blue and clear.

The Lord is moving like wild wind down in the south part of Georgia with me; and I am willing for Him to use me freely. Though the sects are murmuring, and there are divisions among the people on account of Him. I am glad that the Lord gave me a discerning of spirits, and I see satan fall as lightning.

I will send you one dollar for the Trumpet. Yours under the blood.

THE TRAIN OF SIN.

—:o:—

Ovid Mich.

DEAR Brethren: — My testimony to- night, is that I am saved from all sin and walking in all the light God gives me. Yesterday was a day to be long remembered by the children of God at Laingsburg, and all who were present. It was God’s will to send Bro. and sister Smith, and some saints from Gratiot out here to hold a two day’s meeting, the first ever held at this place by the saints. There were some enclined to make fun of the precious ordinance of washing the saints feet. But glory be to God for a salvation that makes God’s children humble themselves to do as the blessed Word commands us we should do. There were seven claimed to be wholly sanctified to God at this glorious meeting. The meeting closed by singing “the Saints Farewell.” O glory to God and the Lamb forever and ever! God bless the one that composed that glorious hymn. We do not know, when we sing that song, and take the parting hand, whether we will be permitted to meet again on this earth. But how glorious it is to think that we never have to separate with the dear brothers and sisters after God takes us home to Heaven. O praise God! I am free in Christ Jesus! Five months ago, God for Christ’s sake forgave me, a poor lost sinner. O it makes my heart ache to hear people that claim to be followers of God preach up that we cannot live without sin. But I would say to all such, if any one sins every day he is a sinner, and follower of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. The Word of God says that we cannot serve two masters. So if we sin every day we are a great way from God. God gave me wonderful light on this a few weeks ago. As I am yet young in the cause of Christ, and out here all alone, the devil tried all in his power to overthrow me. He sent one of his followers, who claimed to be a child of God, and he said, “Whoever says he lives without sin is a liar and the truth is not in him.” I told him that I guessed he nor any one else could find that in the Bible. He said he could and endeavored to do so, but failed. I showed him where it says, “If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” — John 1:8. The next verse says, “If we confess, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Therefore when we come to Christ, we do not say we have no sin; for we come to Him to forgive us our sins and He does it. Glory to His holy name forever!

But he and others, and the devil got me to thinking. And that night before I shut my eyes to sleep, I prayed to God to reveal it unto me, so there would be no more doubt. And He answered my prayer before morning. He showed me in a dream two rail-roads running side by side for some distance; but one seemed to be a switch, and it was exactly as the other track, only it did not run but a short distance till it came to the end, and right at the end was a great gulf. Another person and myself were standing on the main track talking. We Heard a train whistle, and looking up the track, we saw the train coming in full speed on the switch track. I thought they would stop before they got to the end, but they did not. They plunged on over into the great gulf. There seemed to be but two men on board. This train the Lord showed me was sin, and the one man was the devil, the father of sin, and the other man represented the sinners he has on his train of destruction. The next day I told this man I had been talking with, my dream, and he acknowledged that he was on the train. Dear reader are you on satan’s train? If so, my prayer to God is, that you get off at the first station.

O hallelujah! my soul is free from all sin. Pray for me dear brothers and sisters that God may keep me faithful. God says my grace is sufficient, and I take Him at His Word.

“I will follow Thee my Savior,
Thou did shed Thy blood for me,
And though all men should forsake me,
By Thy grace I’ll follow Thee.”

Your Bro. in Christ Jesus. God has wholly sanctified me by a second work of grace.

Dearly beloved Bro’s. Warner and Fisher: — I recieved your kind and welcome letter, was very glad to hear from you. O hallelujah to God for the glorious success in the Gospel. Bless God! it does my soul so much good to hear of souls being saved from sin. Yours found me well and saved from sin, this leaves me the same. Hallelujah! I am at home once more after being gone 110 days in the work of the blessed Lord. I traveled about 2500 miles, held eight meetings in the name of King Jesus. Many precious souls have been saved. In the number six preachers. This was a glorious experience for me in the vineyard of the Lord. I am now at Chanute, nine miles from Urbana in a tabernacle meeting with Bro. Sumter of Ind., and Bro. Orr of Earlton Kan., the meeting continues in the name of King Jesus for the salvation of immortal souls. There has been three sanctified and one converted, others under deep conviction both for pardon and purity. The meeting will continue as long as the Lord wills.

Well beloved, we will have the camp meeting if the Lord wills, and may you be permitted to come over and help us.

Your free Bro. saved from sin.

Dear Brethren: — It has been some time since I have sent a testimony to the precious Trumpet. So this morning while feeling so gloriously saved and blessed, I thought I would pen a few lines. While I was reading the blessed testimonies this morning in the Trumpet my poor heart was made to rejoice. Glory to God for full salvation. I am saved this morning sanctified, soul body and spirit.

Bro. Haner held a few days meeting here which resulted in good; a few souls got victory over the sects, and come out, and are trusting in Jesus for salvation alone. May God bless Bro. Haner. I never heard the truth so properly preached as he preached it here; but I want to tell you the old sect devil was stirred up wonderfully, and locked the house against us; but bless God! we got a glorious victory on the Lord’s side. Three or four souls were made free, and several more are almost ready to renounce their sects, and come out on the Lord’s side fully. I will close by saying I have the best experience now that I ever had. Praise God! I am saved through and through. My prayer is, may God send some more holy men around this fall. Your Bro. saved.

O how precious! O how precious is the sound of Jesus name! This is my happy experience. The precious blood is flowing through my soul, washing me from all sin and keeping me sweetly saved all the time. Praise the Lord! the pure love of God in my heart keeps me from worldly conformities, and from the love of all churches except Christ’s Church. Praise God! My name is written in Heaven. Whomsoever the sou maketh free is free indeed. Praise the Lord! I am not only free, but the Holy Ghost fills my soul, anointing me for all my Father has for me to do and giving me victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. I had been a cold Methodist for years; but when I began to hear holiness preached, I began to examine my heart, and finding many things therein that’ did not belong to a christain, I went humbly to God for pardon. I was baptized, and am now free in Christ; walking in all the light God gives me, willing to do any thing that is to the glory of God. God has a happy little band of His worshipers here at Deshler. Pray for me. Your sister in the Lord.

Dear Brethren: – I feel it a privilege and duty to write a few lines for the Trumpet again. I am still oil the wing for glory, for I have glory in my soul, and am filled with the fulness of God. I am more thankful to my blessed Heavenly Father every day I live, for blessings received both spiritual and temporal, and that I am coming down to my grave as a shock of corn fully ripe. O it is so blessed to have perfect victory over every thing all the time. This is what Jesus does for me and all that put their whole trust in Him. O praise His holy name!

Dear Brethren: — God bless you all abundantly. Amen! We are saved to the uttermost and sanctified and tried. Hallelujah to God! we will ever praise Him for the glorious Bangor Camp Meeting. O glory be to God! We had a blessed good time returning home, making the hills and valleys resound the praises of our God as we sang the Heavenly songs of victory. Bro. Kilpatrick stopped at Waterloo Ind. and held meeting over Sunday. One converted, with a prospect of much good being done in the future.

Dearly beloved Brethren: — May the Lord bless you all abundantly for Jesus’ sake, and your labors in the Lord, is my prayer. The work is still going on. Last night we had an ordinance meeting at Bro. C. Gordens. Twelve or thirteen took part, and were happy in following the Lord and obeying His commands. We realize, happy are ye if ye do these things. Well praise the Lord with us, and let us exalt His name together for what He is doing for us in this place. Shout the gald tidings exaltingly; sing, Jehovah has triumphed. I would also add, that Brother Nathen Barham was healed by the Elders praying for him. Last week he called for the Elders and they went and he was healed and came back with them, and was at the ordinance meeting last night. All honor and praise be to the Triune God. Your sister washed in the blood of Jesus.

Dear Brethren: — I do praise God for salvation that so sweetly saves and keeps us. I do praise God for what He has done for me. I have given all to Jesus to live and die for Him. He has justified and sanctified my soul through the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. I do praise God for the healing power. A year ago this summer I was so afflicted that I could scarcely raise my hand to my head. I did not have the privilege to call the Elders as my husband is not saved. After some time, through the mercies of God, I got able to walk to one of my neighbors, where Bro. A. J. Kilpatrick and quite a number of the saints were, and I asked them to pray for me, and I was healed, and am healed to-day. I came home the next day and went to work. In a few days I did all my work, and there are live in my family. I do praise God for what he has done for me. Praise God and the Lamb forever! Pray for me that I may ever do the whole will of God. Your sister saved and sanctified in Christ.

Dear Brethren: — God bless you all. I am impressed by the Spirit to write to the Trumpet. O may God bless your work in publishing the glad tidings of salvation to the perishing souls. Oh how my heart, goes out for sinners. The sectarians are harder to reach than sinners. They stand up for their sects, and are strangers to God. Well I bless God for the light He gave me eight years ago this spring, and how He led me. O glory to God! Oh how I was tried while I was the only one in our place that had the light to come out of babylon. But all the trials did not move me, but made me stronger in faith. I do praise God for salvation from sin and the works of the devil. Oh hellelnjah to God! I am saved by the precious blood of Jesus, and sanctified wholly. I realize that God is my all in all. Oh hallelujah to God! we l00k for some of God’s saints to come to Kansas, for God has His little ones scattared over Kansas here and there.

Your sister saved and kept by the power of God.

Dear Brethren: — My testimony is that I am fully saved and blessed of the Lord. Praise His holy name! I do enjoy the Lord and His prophetic salvation, that makes me free from all sin, and many evil habits which the devil inculcated into me; such as the use of tobacco, whiskey, tea and coffee. Those four evils were fast imparing my mind so as to prevent me from working for the Lord. But thank God He has cleansed me from them all. And now I am on the “clear sea of glass that is mingled with fire,” where all the redeemed of the Lord do stand.

The saints in this place are joyful in glory, and anticipate a glorious refreshing from the presence of the Lord during the coming grove meeting, which is to be held in brother Ballenger’s grove, Aug. the 5th.

Dear Brethren: — Praise God forever and ever! Glory to Jesus! We have such glorious meetings. The Lord is with us, and souls are being added to the Church. The Lord is wonderfully blessing me, in preaching the Word of God. My soul is full and running over. I do give glory to God and the Lamb forever, for salvation.

All the saints at this place and No. 11, went to Saratoga, (a town about 8 miles South of here) last Sabbath, in the barn of a good old woman, who has become disgusted with the U. B. sect. She says there is no good there any more. We had meeting at 10 and 3, and the Lord poured out His Spirit upon us, and it filled all the barn where we were sitting. The place was shaken where we were assembled together; and we were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and spake the Word of God with boldness. Glory to Jesus forever!

Dear Brethren: — My wife and I are saved, and trusting in the Lord. Oh how the devil did try to carry me off when we were out to the camp meeting: he tried his best to get ns to go home and leave the meeting, but Bro. Fisher came to me, and asked me to stay to one more meeting, and then he said I could go home. So I stayed and praise God! when the meeting was over, I was dead to the world, and it was a glorious time to my soul in the after-noon, I was rejoicing and did not want to go home, for I felt at home among the dear saints. Praise the Lord for a salvation that we can feel! O I never can praise the Lord enough. I have nothing, it all belongs to the Lord. Praise God! Pray for me. Your Brother in Christ Jesus.

To the workers for the Gospel of truth, in the union and Spirit of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ I write you.

I heard you but a few times while you were working in the town of Williamston, and while sitting under the preaching of the pure Gospel of Christ, I felt this to be a pentecostal time; and I rejoice that a people has been raised up to work for the salvation of souls. May the Lord bless you, that you may be the instruments of saving an innumerable number of souls, who shall be witnesses for the testimony of the great truth which is being revealed through you, as laborers and followers of our Lord Jesus Christ. I am thankful that you have taken the ground of perfect freedom, from all the creeds and sects and isms. Since my conversion to to the Gospel of truth and light, many years ago, I have waited anxiously for the coming of the Lord, that I might join the great and mighty army, going forth conquering and to conquer, in the Spirit of Him who liveth forever and ever. I thank God for His keeping power. I have sailed through many rough seas, when I have felt the breakers must roll over me, and submerge my tiny bark, but glory to God! I have been marvelously preserved and kept by the great and strong arm of our clear Redeemer, who is able to save to the uttermost. I am happy to give in my testimony, as a lover of the truth, and of the great work of the Lord. I hope you will pray for me, that I may be fulfy saved, and be one of the great army in the glorious work of salvation. Your Sister in Christ.

THE GREAT PAPAL PEAST.

-:o:-

After our recent article on Rev., a brother wrote us very highly recommending a small work entitled “The Image of the Beast,” and said if we would send for it, and read it, and did not say it was a grand exposition of prophesy, he would pay for it. “Well we sent for the book, and what we now have to say, will be sufficient to inform that brother what we think of the work.

The author of the book labors extensively to prove that the image of the beast is Masonry. He finds some good points of analogy, upon which he bases some strong arguments. But the writer makes no pretention, to interpretation by the Spirit of God, and the very foundation of his superstructure is a fatal error.

In Rev. 13, we see a beast coming up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns. A second beast arises out of the earth, having two horns. And lastly, by order of the second beast an image of the first beast was made.

There are symbols of religious powers that make up the great apostasy. Different developments, that followed each-other in the order of time, and still exist contemporaneously with each-other. No sectarian is prepared to receive the true light on these powers, and properly apply the symbols; from the fact he is not willing to classify his own sect under the head of beast religion.

Mr. Horton, the author of the work referred to, says, “The ten-horned beast is the Roman Empire. *** Catholic, as well as Protestant commentators are agreed on this. This opinion, based as it is on so much evidence, must be allowed to settle for the time being, the fact that the tenhorned beast is the symbol and representation of, and therefore is, in prophesy, the Roman Empire.”

So those educated commentators confess they do not “know the truth” in these prophetic symbols, but only guess, or opinionate about them. It is also true, that prophesy is sealed until the time arrives to which it applies. And it is not reasonable that men should see the symbols, and prophetic truth pertaining to Romanism, and Protestantism, until clean escaped from all those forms of beast religion. Therefore, as Mr. Horton claims an advantage over past commentators, we claim a still greater advantage over him, and all by gone writers. Not only because we now see those systems in a later and more perfect stage of their development., but more especially, because we see them from a standpoint without. Have clean escaped these beast systems, we occupy a much more commanding view of them from the holy mount of God, than anyone can while walking in their ranks. As a spectator can take in a scene much better than one included in the scene.

We have taught the people, by the light of the Spirit, that this first beast represents Romanism. Tin’s we did without stopping to consult any theologian. As we always depend upon the Spirit of God, to show us the import of the Scriptures. But by reading Mr. Horton’s book, we find ourself in collision with the learned commentators, Clark, Scott, Barnes, and others are represented as teaching that this beast symbolizes the Roman Empire. So says theologians generally, both Catholic and Protestant, in all the past.” So let us examine the Word thoroughly on this point. A correct application of the first beast, is all important clue to the interpretation of the second, and the image. The Romish priests are very willing to apply the character of the persecuting first beast to the Roman Empire, or something beside themselves. And Protestants wish to shove the second beast back upon the papacy, to avoid an application of either to themselves.

But we shall show by the Word of God that the first, or ten-horned beast, is the Roman Catholic hierarchy, or her symbol: and that the second beast is Protestantism.

“And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea. having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and Ins seat, and great authority. And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed, and all the world wondered after the beast. And they worshiped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was. given unto him to continue forty and two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, and His tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. If any man have an ear, let him hear.” — Rev. 13:1-9.

How any one can make this symbol apply to the Roman civil government is astonishing to us. It would appear that such interpreters have not stopped to read its description. In the first verse, the beast as described as having seven heads and ten horns. This identifies it with the beast of chapter 17, having the same number of heads and horns. In chapter 13, the beast represents all that pertains to the Catholic hierarchy, in chapter 17 the woman and the beast are combined to symbolize that institution. The “great whore” is brought to view, as riding on the beast, to identify the beast with the apostate, and counterfeit church. Because the true Church of Christ is often characterized as the Bride, the Lambs Wife. A false church would naturally be represented by a treacherous unvirtuous woman.

The blunder the wise commentaries have committed is this. Seeing the great whore and the ten-horned beast on which she rode, represent the papal power in Rev. 17. They have failed to see that that beast itself represents the same power in chapter 13. When the woman and beast appear combined the former whore particularly represents the Romish sect, as a degeneration from the Bride of Christ, and the latter, the power that sustained her. As such it included the Roman Empire, when that government gave its support to the woman, but the ten-horned beast is not confined to that government; but includes all powers that Rome has ever leaned on, even the ecclesiastical authority she still rides on. Hence it is a “beast that was, and is not, and yet is.” — 17:8. Namely, was, and is not—in the form of political power—and yet is, in the form of her ecclesiastical and party power and authority. Hence we see the ten- horned beast is not confined to any one government that gave support to Rome, but to any, and every form of power she ever has used, and still continues to use. It represents varied sources of strength, down through all her history, and in all her different surcomstances. It strikingly shows that the great mother sect is not, nor ever has been born by the band of God, but by devilish, earthly, beastly power, whether it be the subversion of civil government, or the infusion ..d party idolatry. In the picture of the woman riding upon the beast, both are combined into one system, one power and represents Romanism, the mother of harlots, and abomination of the whole earth. And the same corrupt system is symbolized by the beast alone in chapter 13.

Returning to verse 1, we read, “And upon his head the name of blasphemy.”

This shows that the beast was not a civil government, but an institution which blasphemously assumes the name of the Divine Church. Its very name is blasphemy. This is not true of the Roman Empire, but is awfully true of that filthy, drunken, murderous institution, which impiously assumes the name of “The holy Catholic (universal) Church.” Upon its head, the Pope, the name of blasphemy. Is it not the vilest blasphemy to identify such a hellish institution of satan, with the heavenly Jerusalem, the City of God? And announce, its head the infallible vicegerent of Christ.

Terse second. “And the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.”

To apply this to the Roman Empire were a direct contradiction of the Word of the Lord. Speaking directly of civil governments, the inspired Apostle says, “For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

Whosoever therefore resists the power, resists the ordinance of God. *** For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil.” — Rom. 13:1, 2. There is then no civil government power but what is of God. But this beast received his power from the dragon, therefore he does not symbolize apolitical government, but an institution created, and equipped by the devil.

In verses 3 and 4, we are told that “all the world wondered after the beast. And they worshipped the dragon that gave power to the beast, and, they worshipped the beast.” It is true that men. through heated patriotism, may be said to worship their government. But here is a universal devotion paid to this beast, and the dragon who gave him his power. This certainly invests the beast with the character of a religious institution. And nothing ever existed on earth that answers this description, but Roman Catholicism.

Was not that wicked beast feared, revered, and worshipped throughout the entire world?

While the Roman Empire is recognized in history as the last of the four universal Empires, and in a sense did sway its sceptre over the civilized world, it were a contradiction of facts to say it was worshipped by all the world.

“And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things, and blasphemies,” verse 5.

“And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, and His tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.” — Vr. 6.

This description positively points to the papacy as its fulfillment. Not the Roman Empire distinct from papacy, but the Roman Catholic hierarchy itself, and especially by the mouth of the Pope, its head are great things, and impious blasphemies spoken. His assumed head-ship of the Church, is vile blasphemy, and his announced claim of infallibility, is certainly “great swelling words of blasphemy.”

This beast is the identical “man of sin” foretold by the Apostle Paul, whose coming is the “falling away,” or apostasy of the Church. He is the very “son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that lie as God, sits in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” — 2 Thess. 2:3, 4.

The Roman Empire was not a development of the apostasy, but this blasphemous beast is, and so is Catholicism, therefore the latter is the fulfillment of the prophetic symbol of the former. The papasy is the very power that sits in the place of God, the pope claiming to be the vicegerent (acting in the place) of Christ Jesus.

The institution symbolized by the beast under consideration, is clearly seen to be the papal sect, by reference to the prophesy of Daniel. In the seventh chapter is described a vision, in which Daniel saw four great beasts, which are interpreted as four universal Empires which were to rise, and upon the earth, the last of which is thus described.

“After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful, and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured, and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.” — Daniel 7:7, 8.

This beast is a symbol of the Roman Empire. Out of it came ten horns, which denote ten different governments, into which that Empire became divided, about all appearing in the fourth and beginning of the fifth century. And there sprang up another little horn, before whim there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots. And behold! in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.” This is exactly what is said of the first beast of Rev. 13. And of the apostasy, the son of perdition, in 2 Thess. 2. Therefore it is positively proved that the first beast of Rev. 13, is not the Roman Empire, but a power that came into existance about the time that great Empire became divided into ten separate governments. Which agrees with the time the papal power emerged from the bottomless pit, and began to subjugate the nations beneath her vile sceptre. Hence the beast under consideration is the symbol of the papal power.

Returning to Rev. 13, let us read on verses 7 and 8. — “And it was given unto him to make, war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

It was given him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. Now let us turn back to Daniel 7, and look for the same power here described in verses 19, 20, and 21. We have set forth the Roman Empire — fourth beast — the ten horns — later kingdoms — and then the little peculiar horn that rose among them. And to this latter power is ascribed just what Rev. 13:7, 8, ascribes to the ten-horned beast. “I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints and prevailed against them.” — Daniel 7:21. In verses 23, 24, 25, these same kingdoms are again set forth.

“Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be diverse from all kingdoms upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it clown, and break it in nieces. And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings. And he shall speak great words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time, times, and the dividing of time.” — Daniel 7:23, 24, 25.

Here again the mind of inspiration passes over the fourth beast, (Roman Empire) the ten later kingdoms, and ascribes to the little horn power, the very character, and works, that answer to the ten- horned beast. So we find an exact agreement between the ten horned beast of Rev. 13, the apostasy of 2 Thess. 2, and the little persecuting horn, of Daniel 7. They are therefore all one and the same thing. And as that power was to appear in the falling away of the Church, after Paul’s day, it could not refer to the Roman Empire which had already been in existence nearly two hundred years.

Again, since that power is represented as arising during the time of the ten horns, (kingdoms) which came up after the Roman Empire, it is impossible to identify it with that Empire. Can any child, old enough to read, fail to see that since, this power which persecuted the saints, and wore them out, and spake great words of blasphemy, came up among the ten kingdoms that followed the Roman Empire, that it could not possibly mean the Roman Empire itself, which had been founded several hundred years before ?

It is said of this beast, in Rev. 13:5, that “power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.” “To continue,” is rendered in the margin, “to make war,” in other translations it is to “work forty-two months.” In chapter 11:2, we have the same period of time spoken of again, as follows.

“And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth.” — Rev. 11:2.

Here we see that the 42 mouths that the ten-horned beast made war, was the time the “Holy City” — which means the Church of the First born — was trodden under foot.

Forty-two Jewish months, just make 1260 days, and this is clearly seen in the Scripture, to signify 1260 years. Each day representing one year. And these 1260 years just cover the length of time that Catholicism held the mighty sway of political power upon the earth, which continued long alter the Roman Empire had been supplanted by the ten kingdoms that rose in its stead. And since it was by this beast that the holy City was trodden under foot those 1260 years, here is an infallible proof that the beast was Catholicism, and not the Roman Empire, which ended about the time the 1260 years began. Turn again to Daniel 7:25, and you see that it was the “little horn,” —papacy — which rose, among the ten horns-— kingdoms — which followed the Roman Empire, that “wore out the saints of the Most High, and thought lo change times and laws: and they (the saints) were given into his hand until a time, and times, and the dividing of time.” A time is understood as one year, times two years, and the dividing of time, one Half year. Making three years and an half, which, reduced to months, figure out the same 42 months of Rev. 13:5. In Rev. his power continued 42 months: In Daniel he exerted that power in wearing out the saint of the Most High. All of which is true of Catholicism, and it is also true that the mother of harlots, presumed to chang times and laws. She made the first cres.. that rivals the New Testament of our Lord and Savior, and all her harlot Protestant daughters have imitated the mother, in doing the same thing. We think (thine) that all must see that the seven header beast of Rev. 13, is nothing else but the Roman Catholic Mother of Harlots.

Let us call your attention to one more point connected with these wonderful symbols. The Kingdom of Heaven never having been set up in the hearts of the soul-sleeper-ists, they hold and teach the that kingdom has never yet been set us and will not be until Christ’s seconder coming. This is false doctrine.

In Daniel, chapter 2, we are told the Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, had very remarkable dream, which trouble him very much, though his memory we not permitted to retain the portention scene. After all the wise men of the kingdom had failed to relate the dream and its interpretation, Daniel was inspired of God to do so. A great image of man had been seen by the king. The “he was of fine gold, his breast and arms, silver, his body and thighs of brass, he legs of iron, his feet, part of iron and pa.. of clay.”

These four parts of the statue correspond with the four beasts of chapter 7, and represent the four great universal Empire. The legs and feet symbolize the Son Empire.

“Thou sawest till that a stone was on out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and cla.. and brake them to pieces. Then was iron, the clay, the brass, the silver and the gold, broken to pieces together, and I came like the chaff of the summer threing floors, and the wind carried them as that no place was found for them: and … stone that smote the image became a gr.. mountain, and filled the whole earth.” Daniel 2:34, 35.

This stone is a glorious figure of … kingdom of Christ, see verse 44. … shaped and formed by the hands of m.. small and despised at its beginning, … becoming so great as to fill the whole ear.

Now in order to advocate the law-verist theory that the kingdom is not yea up, U, Smith, In his work on Daniel fa..ly teaches that the stone struck the im.. on the toes; but the Word of God does … say so. But “which smote the images up his feet.” All along there is a distinct made between the feet and toes, in … description of this image. We know … toes fire a part of the feet, and so are ..legs a part of the body, but when the f.. are spoken of, it no more means the to than the legs are meant, when the body spoken of. Common sense, and comu.. practice in the use of language should tea.. Mr. Smith, that when the feet, are spoke of it does not refer specially to the to.. . The stone striking the image in the fe.. signifies the setting up of the kingdom Christ during the Roman empire, who truth in figure, became truth in fact, a over 1800 years that glorious kingdom … been filling the earth, though Advent dampness comprehends it not.

As the legs and feet, the fourth part the image correspond with the fourth beast both symbolizing the fourth Universal Empire, i.e., the Roman, so the ten toes up the feet naturally correspond with the a horns that came up after the fourth beast namely, the ten kingdoms that follows the Roman Empire. And now behold … wonderful accuracy in the fulfillment … these Divine, prophetic symbols. The stone cut out without hands, the kingdom … Christ, struck the image on the feet; the is, it was set up in the time of the Roma Empire, and before its division into to kingdoms. But the “little horn,” the papal kingdom came up among the to horns. Namely, was brought forth of the dragon, after the Roman Empire had passed away, its original territory was divided under ten different kingdoms. This was exactly the case. Praise God for His precious truth that endures forever. All glory to the King eternal, and captain of out salvation.

“I beheld till the thrones were cast down and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair on his head like the pure wool His throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheel as burning fire. And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness, of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey Him.” — Daniel 7:9, 27.

Daniel.
