HOPE.

—:o:—

She hovers o’er the darkest cloud
That life’s sad pathway shades,
And e’en when tempests rage most loud,
Her voice the storm pervades.

She lights our gloom — she soothes our care —
She bids our fears depart,
Transforms to gems each grief-fraught tear,
And binds the broken heart.

She glances o’er us from above,
The brightest star that’s given,
And guides us still through faith and love,
To endless peace in Heaven!

__________

THE HOLY SPIRIT THE SEAL.

—:o:—

AND grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption — Eph. 4:30. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is the completion and seal of our salvation from sin; and without this baptism, no child of God has the power to retain the peace of justification; an actual state or life of a truly justified soul in this present glorious evening light is necessarily of very short duration; for when we are first born of the Spirit, and babes in Christ, we soon see our lack of power to stand. And when we hear the everlasting Gospel preached, which is now being heralded abroad, the Holy Spirit immediately leads us to the truth of Rom. 5:2. namely: This grace wherein we stand; also to 1 Thess 4:3. and 5:23. Heb. 6:1. etc., where we gladly enter into this glorious grace, else go back and lose our justification. It is impossible to retain justification, when we once receive the knowledge of entire sanctification, and refuse to enter into it. To him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. — James 4:17. The Holy Spirit is the sanctifier, which seals its into Christ: where we can securely repose in all temptations, and are continually kept free from all sin.

Without this seal upon us, we can not retain the peace of justification. No justified soul will sin; for the commission of sin destroys the peace; sin brings condemnation. To retain the peace therefore, we must have the power to overcome all sin, which we can not have until the body of sin is destroyed; and we are filled with the Holy Spirit, and sealed in Jesus, where we are continually secure. Hallelujah!

The seal of the Spirit is given only to those who have complied with the requirements of, and received justification. In whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. Eph. 1:13. Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. — Acts 8:17. These were such, that had believed, and were baptized. Those disciples at Ephesus, who were believers, had not yet received the Holy Ghost, when Paul came to them; but when they were baptized in the name of Jesus, Paul laid his hands upon them, and the Holy Ghost came on them and they spake with tongues and prophesied. — Acts 10:1-6. Doubtless these were the brethren to whom Paul was writing, when he wrote, “In whom after that ye believed ye were sealed” etc. Praise the Lord! this was the will of God, even their sanctification. And now, they were prepared to stand against the wiles of the devil, and every temptation was victoriously overcome; because they were sealed. Jesus was sealed with the Holy Spirit before His temptation in the wilderness. And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from Heaven, which said. Thou art my beloved Son: in thee I am well pleased. Luke 3:22. And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost, returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. — Luke 4:1. He was now prepared to conquer satan. He testified to this seal in — John 6:27, where He says, Labor not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you; for Him hath God the Father sealed. The child of God is not properly authorized of the Gospel, until he has God’s royal stamp and seal upon him; which is the Holy Ghost sent down from Heaven. And that repentance and remission of sins should he preached in His name, among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And behold I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. Luke 24:47-49.

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you. — Acts 1:8. This is a license which no man, or human organization can give nor take, because, no human power, except our own will can remove the seal. Not only our security, but also our authority, depends upon this seal. Daniel was sealed in the den of lions by human power; but the mouths of the lions were sealed by the power of God. The great stone at the door of the sepulchre wherein Jesus was buried, was also sealed with a power, in which the chief priests and pharisees placed great dependence; but the seal was removed by the power of God. Jesus said: “All power is given unto me;” and by this power, He seals His children. Paul says, that this seal is the earnest of the inheritance, until the redemption of the purchased possession. — Eph. 1:14. Praise God! we are securely sealed away from the devil, until the resurrection; when the purchased possession, namely: our physical bodies will be redeemed from the grave. — Rom, 8:23. — 1 Cor. 15:51-54.

Glory to Jesus, for a complete salvation of both soul and body, which saves and perfects us forever! For by one offering, he hath perfected forever, them that are sanctified. Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us. — Heb. 10:14,-15. While we remain in this blessed seal, we are as sure of eternal glory as if the resurrection were already past, for the seal can only be removed by our own will, and while our will is sweetly dead to the will of God, the seal remains. Lor I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. — Rom. 8:38, 39. Read 2 Peter 1:4-10.

As a substitute for the immortal bodies, which we shall receive in the resurrection, we receive the glorifying power of the Holy Spirit in life, in these mortal bodies, which glorifies and seals us, until the resurrection. And whom he called, them he also justified, and whom he justified, them he also glorified. — Rom. 8:30. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead, shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. — Rom. 8:11.

Sealed up till the day of redemption. — Eph. 4:30.

Secure with my Savior in God. — Col. 3:3.

Though satan still comes with temptation. — 1 Cor. 10:13.

I conquer him now with God’s Word. — Eph. 6:17.

A PLEA FOR BABYLON.

—:o:—

SOME time age we quoted, in an article, such sriptures as these,

“And hereby we do know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.

And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him.

Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is of God.

We are of God; he that knoweth. God, heareth us; he that is not of God, heareth not us. Hereby know we the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.” — 1 Jno. 2:3; 3:19; 4:2, 6.

And taking our stand on these and other words of divine truth, which are for us as well as for primitive saints, we said, to be right with God and His Word, we must know that we are of the Truth, and in the Spirit of God, and then attempt no fellowship with opposite spirits, which really have no fellowship with the Spirit of God in us. We used these words, which were reproduced by the Michigan babylon holiness record, and spoken against by its confused Editor.

“Ye know that ye are of truth, in the Church of God, the pillar and ground of the truth, and ye know therefore that all who stand aloof from the Church of God, and do not drink in the one Spirit, by which we are all baptized into one body are not of that one body. And to attend and encourage their meetings is to sanction divison and confusion, which God abhors. “A man that is an heretic (namely a sectarian) after the first and second admonition, reject; knowing that he that is such, is subverted and sinneth; being condemned of himself. — Titus 3:10, 11. Every organization, and every professed religionist in any town or neighborhood, that operates separately from, and independent of the Church of God in that place, organized by the Holy Spirit, acknowledging Christ as the only head and door, and being filled with the Spirits of God, and walking in all the commandments, every person, or persons professing Christ, and yet disintegrated from God’s true Church are heretics, or sectarians, and are ‘subverted and sinneth.” Therefore “come out from among them and be ye separate;’ lest ye ‘partake of her sins and receive of her plagues.’ The time was, when God used men in the sects, but sectism has fallen, and God has abandoned the whole thing, and commands ‘His people to come out of her.’ So if you expect to please God and keep saved, keep away from all men and parties, who separate themselves from the ‘Church of the Firstborn which is written in Heaven.’ ”

After quoting the above, the Editor makes the following comments.

“Surely is not the most sectish sect of all the sects the no sect sect? God help us all to avoid all extreme narrow views and find a complete cure for a clannish spirit in the perfect love which characterized our blessed Saviour, whose hands were ever out-stretched in blessing toward the needy without regard to race or class, the only condition required being willingness to receive good at His hands.”

This sect blinded man thinks it is the extremest sectishness clannishness and narrowness, to simply take our stand on the Word of God. Not knowing the truth himself he is compelled to allow equal claims to every other different doctrine to that of his own. Not knowing what spirit he is of himself, he would regard it as narrowness and bigotry to resist every spirit that conflicts with the one he has, therefore he judges all others who “know the truth,” and are able to “try the Spirit,” by his own confusion of mind, imagining in his heart that every body else, is only guessing his way through the fogs of babylon like himself. To reject an evil spirit, because it has no fellowship with the Spirit of God in us, he fixes up in the form of withholding blessings from the needy who may differ with us. That is a false and subtle device of satan. To resist a false and pernicious spirit in a man, although cloked over with religon, is one thing, and to withhold good from such a person when found in need, or when any opportunity presents itself of doing him good in any way, is another thing. The first is my duty toward the man, toward God, and very necessary for the safety of my soul; the second is equally my duty toward God and toward the man, and even toward myself; “for he that watereth shall also be watered.” To not fellowship an evil hypocritical spirit, he thinks opposite to the characteristics of “Our blessed Saviour, whose hands were outstretched in blessings toward the needy, without regard to race or class.”

That is all true. No doubt had Christ found any of those hypocrite Pharisees in need, His hand would have been freely outstretched to relieve their wants, “the only conditons required would have been a willingness to receive good at His hands.” But did He, for all that, neglect His duty to tell them that they were “of their father the devil.?” Did His obligation to do good unto them, imply an obligaton to fellowship their spirits, and call them good brethren, and encourage them on in their delusions, and hypocrisy, until they dropped into hell? Would that have been “an out-stretched hand in blessing upon them?” or would it not have been a curse to their soul? O this blind silliness, that imagines we do not love a soul if we do not acknowledge his religon is all right, even if it is taking him to hell.

Now we would ask the Record Editor if he knows the truth? If not, you do not have the Spirit of God, who guides us into all truth; then also you are not fit to preach the Gospel. But if you claim to know the truth, then you also ought to “know that no lie is of the truth,” and to give a lie equal credence with the truth, is to worship the devil, the father of lies, as much as Jesus Christ the source of truth. By pronouncing us narrow and sectish because we make a distinction between the Spirit that is of God, and the spirits of devils, you show that you know not what spirit you are of, or any one else. Therefore you think it is true humility and meekness to brother every spirit of error: We invite you or any other person on earth to point to a single paragraph in God’s Word that condemns any principal in the above extract. Is it not scriptural to “know we are of the truth,” in the Church of God?” And is it not a fact that all who stand aloof from God’s true Church, and do not “drink in the one Spirit” by which all saved men are baptized into the one body of Christ, are not of the Church of God? As an honest man — would to God that sectarians could be honest — tell me if you think a man, or number of men can be separate from, and independent of the Church of God that is filled with, and organized by the Holy Spirit, holding Christ the only head, and obeying His commandments, and still be christians? If a man can be separate from the Church that is in Christ Jesus, and also be in Christ, then there is division in Christ Jesus, and you cannot deny it. But this question Paul puts to all such wranglers for division and confusion, “Is Christ divided?” By no means. “For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ” — Rom. 12:4, 5. God’s word being true, there is but “one body in Christ.” But this is too narrow for the Record editor. He would rather comfort all the Christless sects on the way to hell, than acknowledge the New Testament standard. There is “one body in Christ” says the Word, then to teach a plurality of, conflicting, separate and independent bodies all in Christ, is anti-christ teaching.

This deceived vender of babylon shoddy holiness, thinks we are very narrow, and extremely sectish, because we are not willing to acknowledge as christians, such as are separate from, and independent of the Church of God, that is filled with the Holy Spirit etc. And “who separate themselves from the Church of the Firstborn which are written in Heaven.” This is as good as saying that men are christians, and should be so acknowledged, even though not in the Church of Christ that is written in Heaven. If this is not pleading for Baal, babylon, Egypt and Sodom, then what is? By finding fault with the above, is virtually saying that, men are Christians, though separate from the Holy Spirit, the Church of God, who are written in Heaven, and drink in some other spirit beside the Spirit of Christ. To say we should be separate from such is shocking to this Editor. Surely he must be on a very broad track, and his ideal of a christian includes all the works of the flesh, the world and the devil, that is called religion, if only above gross immoralities. The Word of God says that those that “separate themselves are sensual,” and those that go out from among us are not of us. But Mr. Shaw thinks we are very clannish because we cannot countenance as christians such as separate “themselves from the Church of the Firstborn which is written in Heaven.” Truly sectarians are badly “subverted.”

Has the Record Editor forgotten his visit to the camp of the saints, where he met such a reign of love that he dropped on his knees shortly after coming on the ground and cried like a child, and thanked God for the great love he had met there? Has he forgotten how he told the M. E. priest at Ithica that he never met such love and power and unity in his life before? Has he forgotten that at a F. Methodist or association camp meeting he said in the pulpit, that he never met a people in his life that had so much love and power of the Holy Spirit, as the comeouters; and then, to please the sectites, quoted some of the language of their founder, before he sat down, saying that, “The worst sect is the sect no-sect.” May God pity such inconsistent crookedness. God knows I do feel sorry for that man, who, would doubtless be a blessed man of God if delivered from the subverting and blinding influence of sectism. The Lord give him grace and strength to come out of confusion, and be complete in Christ.

St James Mo.

Dear Brethren: — I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony. O How I do praise God for a salvation that saves to the uttermost. Bless the Lord O my soul, and all that is within me bless His Holy name! I feel the holy fire burning in my soul as I write these lines. I praise God that He ever took my feet from the mire and the clay, and placed them on the Solid Rock. O how sweet it is to know that we are saved from all sin, and made white in the blood of the Lamb. I am walking by faith, and not by sight. I believe God’s holy Word just as high as Heaven. I know that God, for Christ’s sake, pardoned all my sins, and the very God of peace sanctified me wholly. I give the Lord all the glory for what He has done for me, and my companion. We praise God for sending dear Bro. Warner and little company out here, and for_the light we received on the Word. O dear ones I feel more decided for God each day that I live. I find such sweetness to my soul in this narrow way that I have no desire to turn back, and I will by the grace of God make Heaven my home. O how my heart runs out in gratitude and love when I think of the mighty love of God to usward, that we should be called the chilren of the Most High. The Lord is my wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption. All glory honor and praise be unto His Holy name forever! and ever! Amen!

I’ll praise my loving Savior,
He doth cleanse me now within;
And I’ll rest in His kind favor,

For he saves me from all sin.

Now I live alone for Jesus,
He who did my soul release;
And I’ll give Him all the glory
For I’m kept in perfect peace,

Yes, now I trust my Savior,
And in Him I am blest;
I’m leaning on His bosom,
And O how sweet my rest,

O now I’m filled with glory,
I have Jesus in my soul;
I’ll tell the wondrous story,
I am ev’ry whit made whole.

Sinner, harken to the Gospel,
So loving and so true;
The gentle loving holy Spirit
Just now is calling you.

The Lord is coming quickly,
According to His Word;
Be ready brother, sister
To meet the blessed Lord.

Oh glory! hallelujah!
Oh blessed Jesus come,
I’m saved by Thy great mercy,
And ready for my home.

Your sister saved and sanctified by the all cleansing blood of the Lamb.

Alice Salter.

Dear Beloved Saints of the Most High God: — I do feel led by the Spirit of God to write my testimony this evening. After going through persecution for some time the Lord has delivered me and given me complete victory in my soul. I do praise God for his cleaning power. He has cleansed me from all sin. After using tobacco about twenty seven years the Lord cleansed me from the appetite three years ago last September. Praise God! I have not wanted it since. I am free from tobacco, coffee and tea, and the the of medicine. Christ is my complete Savior, and Physician: He healed my body last spring of rheumatism, when I could not walk from my chair to the bed without help. I felt the power of God through my limbs, and I have not felt a pain since Praise God for this healing, power!

Your brother saved by the blood of Jesus, Sanctified, ready to do His will.

THE NEW BOOK, ANTHEMS FROM THE THRONE.

—:o:—

Is just printed, and a few hundred made up. It contains 148 songs. 90 with music. About all new. We had hoped to have about 100, with music, but could not get them electrotyped in time. The pages are some larger than Songs of Victory. When sang in the Spirit of God, these songs will be found glorious. They hymn the precious present truth, and the Gospel standard of salvation.

An important field of usefulness is open for those saints who can teach the Churches these songs, and the saints and their children to sing by note. It will be a great help to the cause of salvation, and give interest to Sabbath Schools. Bro. C. C. Kennedy of St. James Mo., is doing a good work for the Churches in that country, teaching singing. Bro. John U. Bryant of Beaver Dam, Ind., and others could be useful in the same way, and should be encouraged by the Churches. Bryant and they will be met and conveyed to camp.

This Camp Meeting is located in the midst of a host of very blessedly served saints; and a glorious time is expected, in refreshings from the presence of the Lord. A good pavilion was erected last year, with comfortable seats with backs to them. The grove is a beautiful one; many of the saints are in good circumstances, with large hearts, and every body is invited.

Such as come from a distance, will be cared for, if without the comforts of life with them. Let as many bring tents as can or order one built by addressing Bro. Jacob Petty Beaver Dam, and it will be furnished as cheap as possible. This meeting is becoming a general meeting, saints are coming from afar. Come all who can.

Brethren coming by R. R. will please ask for reduced rates to the Beaver Dam Camp Meeting.

JERRY CITY OHIO CAMP MEETING

Will be held near Jerry City Wood Co. Ohio. August 10—16. Bro. A. B. Palmer, our company and others in the ministry, expect to be there. Come whosoever will. God has a few pure saints in that place, and we hope there will be a good turn out of all the holy people in that, and surrounding counties. Come in the name of the Lord. Bring along tents, or at least bedding and provisions. It is not expected that the saints living near a camp meeting should, feed the people and furnish a resting, and unless dear saints take this matter in consideration; those near are often deprived of all the benifits of the meeting, except the blessedness of giving. God’s saints are always willing to do all they can for others, nevertheless, let all seek not to impose unnecessary burdens. Any that are not able to provide themselves; will be cheerfully supplied. We hope to have a glorious meeting at Jerry City Ohio. Wood Co. Come all who wish to get good. Amen!

—:o:—

Bro. Miller writes the following.

Jerry City, Ohio.,

To ALL the Dear Saints Greeting: — We invite all the saints of God, and ail that want to be saints, to the Camp-meeting here. We expect a glorious time, and many souls saved.

All that come on the Toledo, Columbus & Southern R. R., will get off at Trumbly. All coming on this road, let me know at Jerry City, O., and I will meet you at the train, and take you to the camp.

Any coming on the Ohio Central R. R., will let Philip Spackey of Jerry City, know and he will see you to the camp. All saints pray for a perfect victory, and a clean sweep of sin. From your saved and sanctified brother.

Wm. H. Miller.

CAMP AND GROVE MEETINGS IN PA.,

No preventing providence our company will hold meetings in Pa., as follows.

A Camp Meeting

Near Rockland Station, Venango Co., Aug. 23-30. Rockland is a flag station on the Alleghenny Valley R. R. Reduced rates have been procured on that line. A good grove and all necessary comforts will be provided. Any one wishing tents built on the ground can order them by addressing Bro. David Farren, Pittsville, Pa., and they will be put up according to order, as cheap as possible.

A general rally of the saints is earnestly desired at this meeting. Bring tents, or come prepared for camping all that possibly can. Accommodations will doubtless be on the ground, for such as cannot come prepared. We are praying the Lord to give us a glorious meeting there; of course all the ministerial brethren are invited and expected as far as possible; everybody wishing to do good and get good are invited. We advise the brethren to allow no regular sale stand on the ground, and no huxstering. But let one brother keep in connection with his tent, an eating table and a store of provision, and furnish nothing but the actual necessaries of life; such as bread, crackers, cheese, meats and fruits. We have settled this forever, never to give consent to any stand simply to make money. We felt that God was greatly pleased with the way this matter was managed at the Bangor Camp. Bro. Michels kept such a supply for the people; took in a good deal of money, but boarded most of the preachers, and many others free; came out about clear, and all was holiness to the Lord. Let the saints put notices in the secular papers to that effect, and carry out the plan for the glory of God. If parties disregard your rights given by law, and can not be kindly persuaded to stop, put a warrant, upon them, have witnesses who can testify to what was sold, and that money was actually taken. If the parties continue to violate the law, issue a second warrant, and so on; for some will pay one fine, in order to take money in all day on Sabbath. Dear brethren see to this; God wants no trafficing institution on His camp for filthy lucre.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

—:o:—

Bangor, Mich.

Dearly Beloved Saints: — On the evening of June 6th meeting commenced at Hamilton, Mich. and closed Sunday evening, following. Our joy was great because of salvation, and meeting dear Bro. Speck and others. On Saturday Bro’s D. S. Warner and Barney Warren and others from the Trumpet office, and companion arrived, which gave us great courage at such reinforcements from God’s Household; but the greatest cause for rejoicing was, that a number of souls were saved, and the work of sanctification of believers and the establishing of the body, going on at the same time. O praise the everlasting God for the double everlasting joy it gives us to work for the salvation of precious souls. On Monday the 11, went to our home; on Wednesday went to the Bangor Camp Meeting, which commenced on the 13th and dosed the 21st.; this meeting was the best ever held on those grounds; Many souls were saved, many sanctified, devils cast out and some hypocrisy brought to light. Better order that ever before prevailed. The meeting from beginning to end was a success. Friday 22, went to Cheshire and held meeting at Bro. Geo. Wilsons in the evening. The next day being the day appointed for meeting to commence in the evening, we again met with Bro. Speck, Mother Smith, Bro’s Jacobson and Smith, and many brethren and sisters from Hamilton, Diamond Springs, Cheshire, Trowbridge and Lee. Bro. Speck preached in the evening with the Holy fire in his soul as usual. Three sermons were preached to the people in Allegan. Sunday afternoon one of the brethren went out to the poor house, (about four miles,) at the request of the overseer and inmates and preached the Word to the poor unfortunates who received it with gladness, and begged them to come back again: a number expressed a desire to be saved.

The Lord gave us wonderful victory and liberty; we believe seed was sown that will bring forth fruit in God’s own good time. Monday went back to Cheshire in company with other workers, and held meeting in the Marble-School-house in the evening, where we routed the enemy; this afternoon (Tuesday) we expect to meet again, and to-morrow expect to go to Morley and from thence to White Cloud, Mich.

LATER.

July 5th. Tuesday p. m., we met at Bro. Guard Austins where one soul who had been led away from God, consecrated for the pardon of his sins, thus showing what the trouble was in that Church; (Cheshire) therefore our predictions as slated above came to pass; but the devil is foaming out his shame in others. Some are losing confidence in the saints, because God’s ministers insist upon straight work. No matter how much confidence the people may have in a person who professes salvation, if he does not walk straight, we must put on the rod and by God’s help we will do it.

Wednesday we started for Morley; at Grand Rapids met Bro’s Warren, Warner and Grover. Bro. Speck, Bro. Warner and band went on to Gratiot meeting; the rest of us to Morley, where we met some of the dear saints in the evening; also Bro. and Sister Wm. Smith. Thursday morning went in company with Bro. Smith to Howard City, to visit a sick lady who expressed a desire to see us and get saved; well praise the Lord, she gave herself to God who saved her and gave her a glorious witness by His Spirit, which gave her joy unspeakable and lull of glory. In the afternoon we met in the grove two miles south of Morley, where the Lord wonderfully poured out His Spirit upon us. The same evening Bro. Smith brought me over to White Cloud. Friday evening met the people at the School-house four miles west of White Cloud; we met with some opposition at first; the devil had some of them deceived in their experience; but praise the Lord they got saved. We preached Friday and Saturday evenings and three times on Sunday. The Lord, during our stay there, sanctified two and pardoned four others. Sister Elsie Robinson who had been an Advent preacher, but some time ago renounced her Adventism and turned to the Lord, consecrated for sanctification; the Lord received her offering and blessed her greatly. May the Lord use her wonderfully in the salvation of many souls is our prayer. Amen! Sister Robinson formerly lived in Geneva township, Van Buren Co.

Piedmont, Kan.,

Dear Saints: — May God wonderfully bless and keep all of His true children. I want to say to the glory of God, that I am still on the uncompromising, fire baptized Bible line for God. I am sweetly saved, sanctified and kept by the power of God unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time, with complete victory in my soul, over all the works of the devil.

I have been preaching the Word to a crowded house for the last five days; the meeting still goes on. Yesterday afternoon the opposition ran in a Mormon preacher by the name of Bays; I warn all holiness people, especially Evangelists to beware of this man, and all others of like satanic craft, who in the guise of righteousness, endeavors to get inside the camp to destroy the work.

I am on my western campaign, in the name of Jesus, endeavoring to scatter the power and light of God’s truth; claiming the victory in the name of the blessed Jesus. I expect from here to go south west to Atlanta, Kan., This is an entirely new field of labor; the pure Word having only been preached in a few places. There is a great need of more workers in this country.

Mt. Pleasant, Ia.,

Dear Brethren: — May grace, mercy and love fill your hearts and keep you in harmony with God and His Word, that you may abound in love and good works toward all men, especially the household of faith. Our dear Lord gave us a prosperous journey, so that we arrived home last Thursday night, having been absent from home live weeks and two days.

We left Grand Junction June 25, and according to appointment arrived at Walkerton, Ind., the same evening. Owing to a change of time on the I. P. & C. R. R., we did not get there in time for the meeting Saturday evening. Arrangements had been made for meeting on Sabbath, at Bro. Myers at 10:30. There were quite a number of the saints gathered in, as were also others who were unsaved. The Spirit having revealed to us the state of the Church, we were enabled to hold up the golden reed for their measurement; after which, we had an altar exercise; and all the saints feeling their need, humbly knelt at the altar and were pretty thoroughly cemented by the blood again. Much, if not all the trouble came from over exaltation of otherwise holiest hearts, who in ther zeal for the cause of God, had failed to exercise “the wisdom of serpents and harmlessness of doves.” O that God would so melt the saints by the fire of the Holy Ghost, that they may keep sweet, and have nothing but the mind of Jesus to guide them in all their exhortations, admonitions, reprovings and rebukings; thereby the enemy will not be able to bring in his evil surmisings, and thus destroy the unity of the Spirit.

One poor soul who was a member of a sect came to the altar, but was so filled with self righteousness that she seemed to have no interest, but soon got up and went away. In the afternoon the Lord enabled us to show her the need of a Savior, she then got down, while a few of God’s little ones held on by faith, until she was delivered from her sect spirit, and the wearing of the gaudy tinselry of the world.

Sabbath night we held meeting at Bro. Morehead’s in the town of Walkerton; the house was filled to overflowing, and the dear Lord helped us to hold up to the people a Savior who was able and willing to save to the uttermost, both in justifying and sanctifying the soul. Even those who belonged to the sects, had to acknowledge the truthfulness of the position upon which the free saints of God stand. After we had dismissed the congregation, we felt that God wanted to save some souls before we left; so we were led to speak personally to some and urge them to return to Jesus. Praise God! four dear souls gave themselves to Jesus; may they ever remain true and never wander away from Him.

From Walkerton, we went south through Ind., stopping at various places to visit old acquaintances, or rather to call on them; for we hastened in order to be at Oden, by July 8th., according to promise; had it not been so, we certainly would have remained a few days with those we had worshipped with in former days, and who we felt needed to be taught the way of God more perfectly. But we shall return to those parts at some future time, if the Lord wills. O, how our heart was moved with compassion when we saw the dark veil of sectarianism shutting out the true light of God. How we longed to tell the blessed story of Jesus and His power to save, so long and loud that the whole world might bear. For indeed it does seem as though the world was asleep, and had gone far away from God. Having received a card from Bro. Allen of Oden, stating that they would expect me there on the 7th., and to come to Elnora their nearest R. R. station; we made our visits short in order to be there in time for the hack for Oden, where we arrived on the afternoon of the 7th.

That night we had meeting in the town hall, but the people were so filled with prejudice that there were but few out; it seemed to us that the spirit of the demons of hell filled the room. The Lord gave us liberty in proclaiming the Word; especially to those who were professing to be free. After the preaching we had an altar service, and a few who had backslidden came forward and consecrated. Next day we had meeting at Bro. Alshouse; only a few were there; Bro. Cloe walked ten miles in order to meet with us in worship, and the Lord blessed him in making the sacrifice. We had a very good meeting, and some who had been ensnared by the devil, claimed their liberty in Christ. At night we held meeting at Bro. Allens: the dear Lord permitted a much needed rain to come, and thus many were kept from the meeting. We think that good was done by way of sowing seed and in strengthening those who were making a profession. May the Lord help them to be very careful to maintain good works, that the Word of God be not reproached, and that prejudice be broken down and honest souls searched out and saved. We feel that the wants of our family call us home for a short time. Our testimony is that we are saved to the uttermost, and sanctified by the blood of Jesus. Yours and Christ’s.

Grand Junction, Mich.,

Dearly Beloved Fellow Citizens of the Holy City of God: — Great peace, love and joy be with you all. Amen!

After returning from the North where much good was done in the name of the Lord, I met with the Church near Morly, June 13, where we had a precious spiritual meeting in the evening. Next day started for Bangor, near which place, the precious convocation of the saints was in session. This proved to be the best camp meeting that I ever attended. O, the sweet unity of the Spirit of God and His love which pervaded the place. Bless the Lord, oh my soul!

After this meeting we spent a short time with the dear saints at the TRUMPET OFFICE, and enjoyed their hospitality and fellowship. O may the Lord richly reward their labors of love. We next went to Allegan where we had a precious time in laboring for the Lord. And from there went to labor with the Church in Cheshire, where we found some contention; but through the faithful labors of Bro. Speck and others during their short stay, much good was done and the Church greatly strengthened. After which Bro’s Palmer, Speck, and other workers left for other fields of labor.

Friday evening June 29, we met at the house of dear Bro. Morly; four came forward and sought for and received the blessing of sanctification. One being a sister who had formerly thought she was wholly sanctified because she had a good experience and had many happy seasons in the Lord; being only in a justified state, she realized her condition and received the sanctifier in her soul. On the evening of July 4th we met at the house of dear sister Coleman where we had a pentecostal shower, and there was leaping and shouting on account of the mighty power of God which filled the room, making perfect unity among God’s children. This was the best meeting I ever attended on the 4th. of July.

During my labors, after the departure of the brethren, there were five wholly sanctified and six healed by the Spirit and power of God. The Church was well established and built up in the faith of Jesus. Bless the Lord who doeth all things well. Pray for me. Your brother in Christ, saved to the uttermost.

Dear Brethren in Christ Jesus: — May joy, love and peace be multiplied unto you; may the very God of peace flood your soul with glory divine, and may you keep down at the feet of Jesus, washed in His precious blood. O, my dear brethren measure to the Word of God; be sure you have an experience that will stand the test of the Word of truth. Many have a form of holiness but no power. O, beloved do not be deceived; do not be satisfied with any thing less than to be filled with the Spirit; be filled with the real sweet melting love of Jesus; be filled with faith, grace, mercy, truth, righteousness, goodness, meekness, gentleness, clothed with humility and power, walking and basking in the blessed rays of this sweet evening light of the truth of Jesus. O it is a wonderful thing to have the evening light shining in your soul. Bless the Lord! it shines away all the misty fogs of babylon. From Altamont, we came with the tabernacle and began meeting on Bro. Newbern’s farm, three miles North of Urbana, Kan., continuing over the 4, of July. God was with us in mighty saving power; souls were converted and sanctified; to God be all the glory. The saints were greatly strengthed. On the 4th there were five converted and six consecrated for the baptism of the Holy Ghost; nine were buried with Christ in baptism and filled with the glory of God. Hallelujah to our God! this was wonderful meeting; two were ordained to the work of the Lord. Meeting closed the night of the 4, and we made ready for our journey to come to Cedarvale; we drove through in wagon, six of us filled with the Holy Ghost., We stopped over Sunday seven miles South West of Thayer, where Bro’s Sickles, Wyrick, Houghton and others were holding a grove meeting one was converted. May the Lord bless them; they remained, while our company of sixcame on to camp meeting. We are here in Jesus’ name, and God is with us in mighty power. Souls are under conviction, and three have desired our prayers. I remain your free brother in Christ, full of the Holy Ghost.

Balm, Mo.,

Dear Trumpet Readers: — Grace, mercy, and peace be multiplied; we are still saved to the uttermost, with real victory and glory in our souls. Our three weeks meeting at Flat Rock, Cedar Co. Mo., closed with a general shout of hallelujahs to God. This meeting was one of victory on the Lord’s side from the beginning, although there was some crooked teaching brought in that gave it a backset for a few days, until it was straightened up, and the crooked teacher rebuked, and then it went on with victory again. O, praise the Lord forever! when we began the meeting there was some straightening up to be done on the ordinance question; but the most of them soon accepted all the ordinances, except they would hold on to their sprinkling, and some of them are about to give that up too. The good Lord does always bless the troth; there were forty four converted; twenty two professed sanctification, and twenty eight were baptized. The Lord wonderfully owned and blessed our services at the river while attending to the ordinance of baptism; many of them came out of the water shouting praises to God. We had ordinance meeting, and I believe about all the sanctified ones present took part, and we had a blessed time; the good Lord poured down His power on the dear saints, and oh it was glorious. This was the first ordinance meeting that had been held at that point, and the Lord showed His approval of it, by sending the Holy Spirit down on us while thus engaged; we had three baptismal services; there were nine baptized the first time, and we thought to close the meeting, but that night the meeting continued with singing, praise and shouting, until near eleven o’clock. We had no sermon that night; it was all shouting and praising God; there were five converted that night, two the next day, and nine the next night.

There seemed to be perfect harmony throughout all the meeting, except two or three who stood of from the rest. Praise the Lord forever and ever! He is enabling us by His Holy Spirit, to break down this anti-ordinance spirit. T. W. Brown came to see us this week and stayed two days; he has been off on that side track for more than a year; but praise the Lord, he has returned to the old land marks again, and is a real firebrand for God now. This anti-ordinance spirit has put the light out of many precious souls in south west Mo., and since we came in here, and the true light has begun to shine, we can not fill half the calls we have for meetings; the harvest truly is great, but the laborers are are few.

We fell in with some of the Christian order, (Cambellites) and when they found that we believed in baptism, their young people came out and listened to us preach the pure Word, came to the altar, got converted, and wanted to be baptized. We took them to the river, taught them consecration right there, prayed with them, and they made the complete consecration, went under the water, and came up all covered with glory; that night they testified boldly in the Spirit. Oh praise the Lord forever and ever, amen! Your Bro. saved and sanctified, and full of the Holy Ghost.

Brooklyn, N. Y.

Dear Saints and all who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit: — Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God the Father, and of Jesus our Lord. “Behold! The Lord reigneth, let the earth rejoice, let the multitude of the Isles be glad thereof.”

“For my beloved spake and said unto me, Rise up my love my fair one, and come away. For lo the Winter is past, the rain is over and gone, the flowers appear on earth, the time of the singing of birds is come, the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.”

“Oh ye daughter of Zion, weep no more; for behold the Lion of the tribe of Judea the root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and loose the seven seals thereof. Therefore the Lambs wife hath made herself ready, and He hath brought Her into His chamber, and the nuptials are being served, while we sit with Him at His table in His throne; even as He is sit down with His Father in His throne. And now He hath given unto us the new song to sing, saying, Great and marvelous are thy works Lord God Almighty; and just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints: for thou art worthy to take the hook and to open the seals thereof; for thou wast slain and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred and tongue and people and nation. And hast made us unto our God kings and priests, and we shall reign on the earth.” It is done. Hallelujah! The strange act is come to pass, and we are witnesses, and our Cod commandeth us to say unto the daughter of Zion everywhere, “Behold thy Savior cometh; His reward is with Him, and His word before Him.”

“Therefore lift up your heads O ye gates and be ye lifted up ye everlasting doors, and the King of glory shall come in.”

This morning we have been reading some of the testimonies recorded in the GOSPEL TRUMPET, and our hearts have been made glad. Now we will give our personal experience in addition to what has been written. We this day stand not only so, but walk on the Sea of Glass mingled with fire, having the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, with the harps of God in our hands. Yours in Him.

Dear Saints: — I believe it will please my heavenly Father, for me to speak for Him. I am still kept by His mighty power, knowing that my life is hid in Christ, and Christ in God, therefore l am safe. O Bro. Warner I pray the Lord to send yourself and company, to this wicked city. The Lord has a few of His blood washed ones here, and we long to see your faces in the flesh, so you could more fully establish the little Church of God at this place, in the true faith of the Gospel. Glory to His holy name for salvation full and free! I am happy to say that the Lord is using me for His own glory. I believe He has given me the healing power, and I feel it will be made known.

We read of your glorious victories for the Lord, and long to be with you to help shout aloud the battle cry. My path grows brighter day by day. Glory to His name! From your sister all for Jesus, and under the blood.

Dear Brethren: — My testimony is, that I am saved from all babylon confusion and strife. Oh praise our God for such a free ond complete salvation! I never felt the freedom until I came out of the River Brethren sect. God commands us to come out. That is just as much of a command as any other; now if I had not come out, but waited for them to put me out, I would not be out at all. I feel now as though I had obeyed God’s command. Some say they feel this freedom and are still in the sect. God says: “Come out and be ye separate; come out that ye be not partakers of their sins.” And unless we obey the command and do the getting out ourselves, we are not out at all; even if we were put out, we would not be out in heart, unless we come out from among the unholy.

O praise God for freedom in the Church of the living God! Christ says: “I am the door; by me if any man enter, he shall go in and out, and find pasture.” Praise God for the pasture! By uniting with any sect, we have to furnish the pasture ourselves, to fatten the lazy priests, who care but very little if we do starve. I thank God that He tells His children where and how much to give. Well I feel like praising God all the time. Your Bro. in Christ, saved by His own precious blood.

Dear Saints of God: — Peace and mercy be multiplied unto all. Amen! I feel led by the Spirit to tell you that the Lord is very good to me. He has saved my soul, and has delivered me out of the hands of the enemy; He has wonderfully healed me and cleansed me from all unrighteousness. I do thank and praise Him for the glorious privilege of attending the Bangor Camp meeting; my soul was much edified, and I was healed by the mighty power of God, and the laying on of hands. O, I do praise God so much that we have an all wise Physician who can heal both soul and body, and who is a help in all time of need.

Dear ones we need not fear, if we love God and if we have His love perfected in our hearts, for the powers of hell can not prevail against us. For whatsoever is born of God, overcometh the world; and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. — John 5:4. Let us have faith. For unto Him that over- cometh will I give to eat of the tree of life which is in the midst of the paradise of God. — Rev. 2:7. I will trust and not be afraid; for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; He has also become my salvation. — Isa. 12:20. They which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one Christ Jesus. — Rom. 2:17. I praise God that I am reigning over this world of sin and strife, by Christ Jesus my Savior, my all and in all. The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. — Gal. 5:22, 23. I praise God that Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death; and he whom the Son makes free is free indeed. It makes me rejoice exceedingly to see so many whom the Son has made free. In his love and in his pity, He has redeemed them. — Isa. 63:9. Praise our God! I will fear nothing for thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. — Psa. 32:7. I praise God for this everlasting salvation; this holy fire burning within our hearts, and the hidden manna spoken of in John 6th chapter.

For we which have believed do enter into rest. — Heb. 4:3. I beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service; and be ye not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that ye may; prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. — Rom. 12:2, 3. Praise God for victory over the world, the flesh, and the devil; By God’s assisting grace, I will serve Him as long as I live. The Lord sanctifies me wholly to do His will and leads me by His Spirit into the ways or all truth. Your redeemed sister.

Bellarney, Mo.,

To God’s People: — I was justified in a meeting held in Southern Kan., by Bro’s R. F. Rapp, A. Markwell and Geo. Houghten. I had never heard of the second work, but after I was justified by faith, having peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, I consecrated, also that I might have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. I presented my body a lying sacrifice, holy acceptable unto God, which was my reasonable service; and God so graciously keeps me that I am a wonder to myself.

While this meeting was in progress, an M. E. preacher told me, “If I never committed any great sin, I was safe.” But our Lord said, it was not the big fox that destroyed the vine, but the little ones; and we are commanded to awake to righteousness and sin not; so through the Word, God showed me that this man was inconsistent toward God; and that he thought more of the M. E. beast and Mason devil, than of the pure and undefiled walk of Jesus. I am praising God that He ever brought me up out of the mire and clay, and built me as a lively stone into a spiritual house, where I have the blessed experience of entire sanctification, and victory in my soul over all evil works.

I expect by the help of God, to live and so let my light shine, that my conscience will be clear; I also, (in acknowledgement to the call of God, through Christ Jesus,) expect to teach His holy way, although I am but young in the cause; but God says: “My grace is sufficient for thee;” and I know what God says, is so. Glory to God! Bro. Rapp and I will work together for the glory of God, in the salvation of souls, for a short time here in Mo., and then part. I am going to N. C. to where my parents live, and want all the dear saints to pray God that I take nothing but the straight Word with me. These are indeed perilous times, and we must pray one for another. God bless the TRUMPET and keep it in His order. Amen! Saved to the uttermost right now.

SUFFER PERSECUTIONS FOR CHRIST.

—:o:—

To all the beloved saints in the holy war, may the blessings of Almighty God rest and abide with you continually, fill you with zeal and fire, “that He would grant unto you according to the riches of His glory to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith, being rooted and grounded in love, that ye may be able to comprehend more and more the breadths, lengths, depths, and heights, and to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God, is my prayer.”

As many of you to-day are mingling your hearts and voices in sweet communion and melody to God on the Old Camp Ground, I too (though absent in body) am with you, and just now can feel the sweet fellowship of the Spirit. As I write my heart is full of thankfulness to my blessed Lord for His goodness and mercy to me. I shall never forget one year ago today on the Camp Ground, how wonderfully God did pour out His Spirit upon me. Shower after shower was poured down till my whole soul was flooded with heavenly light and love. Praise God! my soul is filled with praises just now. O that I may join my voice with you all in loud hosannas to our King. And how I do rejoice to be able to tell you all, though absent many months, I am still saved, saved to the uttermost, and rejoicing in the fullness of Christ. Notwithstanding all the trials and persecutions which roll mountain high in this cold dead formal town, I have, by God’s grace triumphed gloriously. Bless God! nothing moves me. Truly as His promise He has established me in righteousness, and to-day victory, victory, victory, is painted upon my banner. It is wonderful, God’s dealings with His child. No language can describe the deep peace and joy I feel. His love and life is spreading in my soul like living waters from a deep spring. Truly God did open a fountain of praise in my soul, and is sinking the well deeper. Three weeks ago last sabbath, feeling within my soul I was starving to hear something sweet about the Lord, I felt led to go and listen to a minister, earnestly asking God that my soul might be refreshed and fed. No sooner had I sat down before my whole soul and flesh felt permeated with glory, and I begun to feel that I could not live unless I could be on some high mountain praising God. All through the service the praises would come notwithstanding the crowd of dead professers around me. And just before the crowd was dismissed the gates of Heaven seemed to open upon my soul, and for a half hour I shouted and praised God with all my soul. O such floods of joy! It was glory right from the throne. Some of the crowd seemed awe-stricken, some wept and others thanked God for His refreshing shower. I was led there for some purpose. He knows I am His servant, and can say Lord thy will in all things be done. O the persecution that followed! But how sweetly I did rest. These words were given me, which were the prayer of my heart “Uphold me according to thy Word that I may live and let me not he ashamed of my hope. Hold thou me up and I shall be safe.” What glory God’s Word reveals to His children. I can say like David, “O how love I thy law.” Instructed by its teachings, sustained by its promises, I am kept in perfect peace. How I thank God for the true light, and how I love to hold up the standard of truth in this dark place. I am called a fanatic and all such, but glory be to God! it only brings more joy to my soul, and instead of a cross it is sweet to suffer persecutions for His dear name. Yes we are more then conquerors—. O Lord fill us and help us realize that no man liveth to himself. Truly God has imparted eternal life within, and it is more than my meat and drink to do His will. I seek only to please Him. Often do I ask myself what am I,? and whence this grace to me that I should be permitted such sweet and exalted relation with Christ? O blessed relattion! Jesus the way, Angels are familiar with the heavenly route, and praise God, His children are too. How encouraging the Christian’s hope. Stop for a moment and consider the prayer in John 17 — That those whom the Father hath given Him might be with Him, that they might behold His glory.” What that glory will be’ far exceeds our present conceptions. O think of an eternity with Christ. We read of the glory and brightness which followed Him while on earth, but how transcendantly glorious will be His appearance in Heaven. And the promise is we shall be like Him. Take courage then dear trembling soul, one look from Christ will make thee whole. Lean hard on Jesus, on the arm that never tires. Let your consecration be complete. Fight the good fight of faith. How I love to proclaim aloud His mighty healing power in my body and soul, which has brought tears to many eyes as I repeat the story. Dear Jesus keep us where thou cans’t glorify thy self through us. Blessed Savior thou knowest all things. Thou knowest that I love thee.

Yours, sanctified by the blood.

Mary Malcomson.

TO the Saints in general, and Readers of the TRUMPET Greeting: — May the Lord bless and keep you. Amen! My testimony is, that I am saved and my soul is resurrected. “On such the second death hath no power.” Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? — John 11:25, 26.

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. — Gal. 2:20. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they that hear shall live. — John 5:24, 25.

I was one that heard the Son of God calling me to come forth out of the valley of dry bones; “And we shall know when he has opened our graves.” Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.

And ye shall know that I am the Lord, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves. — Eze. 37:12, 13. I realized that I was dead and in my spiritual grave.

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses. — Rom. 5:12-14.

O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. — 1 Cor. 15:55-57. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power. — Rev. 20; 6.

The thousand years that people imagine is going to be millennial glory upon earth is past and gone. And I saw an angel come down from Heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil, and satan, and bound him a thousand years, and cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. — Rev. 20:1-3. What was the bottomless pit, where satan was during that thousand years? It was even in the black pit of Roman Catholocism. There is where the devil had his seat and authority. — Rev. 13:2. The Church was hid from human sight beneath the rubbish of sect creeds and doctrines of devils. About 270 the apostasy began, in 325 at the Nicine council, the Bishop of Rome was made head over the whole ecclesiastic organization which had taken the place of the true Church. In 530 he was made Pope and invested with civil power. Then followed one thousand years of utter darkness, when there were scarcely any souls being resurrected from the tomb of spiritual death. In 1530 the reformation, just a thousand years later, the “rest of the dead” began to he raised. But real salvation work was constantly weakened by protestant sectism; and as the evening light breaks out satan gathers the sect nations together to fight the truth. And when the thousand years are expired, satan shall be loosed out of prison,

And shall go forth to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. — Rev. 20:7, 8. Notwithstanding the resurrection, power began to work again on earth in the protestant reformation when the thousand years were expired, satan was loosed out of his prison, and he deceived the nations i. e. denominations, and put them to making creeds, and there was fulfilled, the second beast of Rev. 13:11.

Jesus said to Mary. “I am the resurrection and the life. — John 11:25. When Christ is preached, souls receive resurrection from the dead. The first death is when our soul is dead in trespass and sin. In this condition men fear to let the flesh die, for fear of that hell that is awaiting them. They have fear over them, and they dread to pass out of this world. But it is not so with the sanctified soul. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. — Rev. 20:6.

May God bless all the dear saints, and open the eyes of the blind, so they can see that the way to the lake of fire and brimstone, lies through the bottomless pit of Catholocism, and sectism, and the works of the devil all combined. Praise God! my sins have gone on to judgment, and my soul is resurrected to life, and the blood sanctifies me just now. Praise God forever more!

THE SIN OF SECT DIVISIONS.

—:o:—

WE take the following extract from a book entitled, “The Bible not of man,” written over forty years ago by Gardiner Spring. Pages 193-195. After having made a strong argument in defence of the Divinity of the Bible, based on its harmony, the writer proceeds to meet the infidels objection, so well furnished by the existence of the multitudes of sects, as follows.

“Such is the argument for the divine origin of the Scriptures from their perfect harmony and agreement.

There is but one objection to it which we feel called upon to answer. The infidel demands, “If the Bible is thus harmonious, whence is it that there is so much discordancy among those who profess to make it the only standard of their faith and practice? If the Bible is one, if there is an honest faith in it, whence this discrepancy?” We acknowledge the force of the object, so far as it regards men; but we do not perceive its stringency as it regards the Bible. We say, let God be true, though every man be a liar. As to the discordances among men, we cannot open our mouth. It is as true in moral, as in mathematical science, “that two things which are equal to another and the same thing, are themselves equal.” Human systems which agree with the Bible, agree with each other. The Bible is right, but men are wrong; they are sincerely wrong, because they are sincere in their differences. In requiring men to adopt the Bible as their standard, its Author requires them not to disagree among themselves. Men alone are chargeable with the sin of putting this objection into the mouth of infidelity, and of bringing this reproach upon the Word of God.

It is a mournful, but undeniable truth, that the church of God has apostatized from her primeval unity. Time was when “the multitude of believers were of one heart and one soul.” But these days have passed away; and infidelity has for ages triumphed in a divided church. There is great sin in these discordancies; nor is it the less because they may, peradvenfure, have become venerable for their age; nor because the guilt of them has been so long in contracting, and they have become so closely inwoven, and so deeply imbedded in the habits of human thought. We may not depart from the great and obvious principle, that what the Bible teaches, no man, and no set of men, has a right to disbelieve; nor can we resist the irrefragable conclusion, that where this beautfully harmonious system of truth is received, men themselves will be as harmonious as the Bible.

But while we give utterance to thoughts like these, we would not have infidels unmindful of the fact, that there is much more extended, substantial agreement in all true Christians than their objection implies. There is such a thing as the “communion of saints,” and essential harmony, with unessential differences. Already are there significant movements in the church of God pointing towards greater harmony of views and affection. It will be indeed a new era, when such a day is fully ushered in — a dawning, such as has not brightened our spiritual horizon since the early dawn of the Sun of righteousness, when he rose with “healing in his beams.” It will be a waxing, and not a waning light. “The light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the Lord bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.” His church will put on her garments of strength and salvation; her adornment will be the simplicity of truth and the beauty holiness; and she will look forth fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as a bannered army. It will be eminently the Lord’s work, and marvelous in the eyes of them who behold it. It will require so much free and unembarrassed interchange of thought, so much candor and fairness; so much that is amiable and conciliating; so much humility and prayer, such a strong and practical acknowledgement of God’s word as the only infallible standard; such oblivion of men, and such a remembrance of the great God; that his own condescending goodness and mercy will be most visibly honored in effecting it. This was the prophet’s hope when he said, “Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice, with the voice together shal they sing; for the shall see eye to eye, when the Lord shall bring again Zion.” This was the Savior’s prayer, in view of the wants and woes of a ruined world and a scoffing age: “I pray that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me!”

NOTE.

This man dared “not open his mouth” in defence of the wicked schisms of these last days. Surely none but badly subverted and sinning heretics can.

Each sect claim to be like the Bible, but, as the writer says, Two things which are equal to one and the same thing, must be equal to each other. Therefore if each sect were like the Bible they would all be like each other. But they all widely differ, hence cannot be, and indeed are not like the Bible. And as the Bible is the mind of Christ, they are not after the mind of Christ, and necessarily must be of the devil. Surely by conforming to the Bible, men cannot disagree with each other. Sect builders and sect adherents stand charged before God with the sin of furnishing infidels with this deplorable means of bringing reproach and contempt upon the Christian religion. This sin, the writer says men have committed in sincerity. That was largely true in his day, but to-day where ever the evening light has flashed around, sectarians have no cloak for their sin. “It is a mournful, but undeniable truth that the Church of God (more correctly the masses who profess to be of the Church) has apostatized from her primitive unity.” This could only be the result of apostatizing from the Spirit of God, for all who have the Spirit of God are thereby baptized into one body. And if any man has not the Spirit, he is none of His.

Truly “there is great sin in these discordances.”

The writer certainly had a glimpse of the prophetic, promises of a remnant to be brought back from the sin of sectism, and confusion; also of the glory that would rest upon this remnant brought back from babylon captivity. Thank God, his predictions are beginning to be realized. These Scriptures, describing the glory of God upon His restored Church, must be fulfilled.

“And out of them shall proceed thanksgiving and the voice of them that make merry: and I will multiply them, and they shall not be few; I will also glorify them and they shall not be small. Their children also shall be as aforetime, and their congregation shall be established before me, and I will punish all that oppress them. And their nobles shall be of themselves, and their governor shall proceed from the midst of them; and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto me: for who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto me? saith the Lord. And ye shall be my people, and I will be your God. — Jer. 30:19-22.

Behold, I will gather them out all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safety: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and their children after them: Amd I will make an everlasting covenant with them, and I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me. Yea I rejoice over them to do them good, and I plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my soul. — Jer. 32:37—41. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God. — Isa. 16:20-23.

For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decree shall overflow with righteousness. For the Lord God of hosts shall make a consumption, even determined, in the midst of all the land. — Isa. 10:20-23.

The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid. Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem. The Lord hath taken away thy judgments, He hath cast out thine enemy; the King of Israel, even the Lord, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more. In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not: and to Zion. Let not thine hands be slack. The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. — Zeph. 3:13-17.

Dear Saints: — I feel impressed to write a few lines to the TRUMPET readers. God has wrought a mighty work here; sinners read the Bible more now than ever before, and they know that God wants to save their souls; but they can’t break loose from the world. May God help them. Praise the Lord! we are putting in the whole Sabbath for the Lord. The average number of Sabbath School schoolars in our two Schools is about forty and fifty. The number of Bible verses committed to memory by both Schools, is about two- hundred and thirtythree since the 22 ed of April. The verse each Sabbath containing some one good word, such as Love, Faith, Charity, Sanctification etc. May God continue to do a mighty work here Praise the Lord! From your Brother in Christ, Amen!

Dear Saints: — I feel it would be to the glory of God to add my testimony. I have the sure witness this morning that the blood of my Saviour atones for me, and that I stand redeemed. Praise the Lord forever! He is the Great Physician of both soul and body. My soul has been delivered from the sickness of sin and death, and my body from a tumor that had baffled the skill of one of our best physicians, for almost two years. Glory be to God, for His wonderful power! Since healed by Him I have been able to do any thing that my hands find to do, without the slightest inconvenience. Oh! how my soul longs to see the light shine in the awful darkness that prevails all over the world. Were it not that duty leads otherwise, I would be one to run to and fro; but by the grace of God my light shall shine at home. I can truly say I am saved, and sanctified, and kept pure in the secret of His presence. Your sister in Christ
