Free From Sin

“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” — Jno 8:36.

Yes glory be to Jesus now
Who by His love has set me free.
Who here the weight of sin and paid
The debt for me on Calvary.

Oh blessed Jesus, Thou hast won!
My heart for Thee, from sin set free:
My life, my all, my future all
Shall e’er be hid away in Thee.

Yea, humbly at Thy feet I wait,
The Holy Spirit bidding “go”
To teach salvation’s blessed light
The precious holy seed to sow.

May I forever prove indeed
That I with Jesus true have been,
That I His mansion surely am,
And cleansed from the Adamic sin.

Cry out and shout, praise ye the Lord:
Inhabitants of Zion free;
Great is the Holy One indeed,
Of Israel in the midst of thee.

Then some sweet day we shall be crowned
By heaven’s blessed lowly King
As we as emble round the throne.
We’ll make the mighty arches ring.

QUESTIONS.

><:0:><

I take it for a settled fact that the Apostles, or those that were with John when ne pointed out Jesus, and straightway followed Him, had been justified under the teaching of John, and had pressed into the Kingdom. “For the law and the prophets were until John, since then the Kingdom of heaven is preached, and every man presseth into it.” Hence they “were justified from all thing, from which they could not be justified by the law of Moses.” And there is no account of any of them backsliding but Peter, and he had soon repented. Jesus had sent them out to preach, and gave them power over unclean spirits, and told them their names were written in Heaven. Told the Father “they were His and not of the world, even as He was not of the world.’’ And yet in Matt. 18:2, we find Him telling them: “Except ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” Now dear Bro. please give me the light you have on the meaning of there words.

2nd. If they were converted, what did Jesus mean in Jno. 7:3?

3rd. Also, why did Jesus say of John the Baptist, he that is least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he?

Your saved Bro.

V. Roof.

Answer.

To first. The term converted, means turned, and is used in common with regem rath a and other terms, that describe the first work of grace. Each several term expressing the same portion or feature of the great change. The Apostles, and whole 120 disciples, were converted, and born of God, before the pentecost experience; as the above Scriptures and many others clearly prove.

A careful examination of what had occured among the disciples just before Jesus sat the little child among them, and gave them the talk in Matt. 18:2. will show what called it out. They were but babes, and ignorant of satan’s devices, and exposed to temptations to ambition, etc. And they had just been striving among themselves for the chief position in Christ’s Kingdom. “Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven,” verse 1. In Mark and Luke the matter is brought out. “And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way? But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest. And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all. — Mark 9:33-35. “And he took a child and set him in the midst,” etc. verse 36.

“Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest. And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him, And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me; and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great. —  Luke 9:46-48.

From these and other Scriptures, it is evident that the disciples did not know that Christ’s Kingdom was wholly spiritual, but they imagined He would set up a temporal government; and they were aspiring to the highest, and most honorable posisition in His government. They even “disputed among themselves.” By which, of coursed, they did wrong, and needed to repent. Though we would not be understood that they had entirely backsliden. But to thoroughly convict them for their yielding to the temptation of selfish ambition, He took the little child and gave them a sample of the innocence of the converted state. Neither Mark, nor Luke, speaks of conversion in connection with the lesson drawn from the little child, and in Matt, we must understand the language as simply lifting up the real standard of conversion, that they might be ashamed of, and turn (be converted) from their vain disputings among themselves. The words are therefore to be understood as simply raising the proper standard of conversion for the benefit of all disciples to the end of time, and the recovery of the then present disciples from the fault into which they had fallen.

2nd. What did Jesus mean by John 7:39. The reading is as follows: (“But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.”) The spirit of God begins the work of salvation in conviction — John 16:8, 9. Produces the new birth. —  John 3:5, 6. Witnesses to sonship — Rom. 8:16. But there are three persons in the Godhead — Matt. 28:19. 1 John 5:7. The Father, the Son, or the Word, and the Holy Spirit. So there is a personal distinction between the Spirit that emanate.. from the Father and the Son, and the Comforter, who is the bird person himself; just as there is and distinction between the person of the Father and that of the Son. Though the Trinity is all one in escence, mind, will and power. As Christ was “with the Church (Jewish) in the wilderness,” — Acts 7:38, and yet only came in these last days incarnate. So the third person, the Comforter, also come into the world in the presend dispensation as never before. And His personal coming on the day of Pentecost, was alluded to in John 7:39. Though the Spirit of the first and second persons had operated in the world, the third Person, who ushered in the dispensation of the Holy Spirit was not given until after Christ was glorified.

4nd. By reading Matt. 11:2-11, we learn John was in prison, from which he sent two disciples to ask Jesus this question: Art then He that should come, or thy we lea.. for another?” Jesus directed them to simply return, and inform John what they saw and heard, i. e., “The blind receive their sight,” etc. “The poor have the Gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever is not offended in me.” After they “departed Jesus began to say unto the multitude concerning John. What went ye out into the wilderness to see? a reed shaken with the wind?” The fact that John had received a sure evidence from God that Christ was the Messiah, see John 1:33. and being now in doubt of that fact, the hint that Christ sent back to him, that he should not become offended in Him, and the Lord comparing him to a reed shaken with the wind, all together lead to the conclusion that John had been somewhat offended in Christ. It may have been that he looked for Him to come and release him from prison. “But what went you out to see?’’ He repeated: “A prophet? yea I say unto you, and more than a prophet.” “Notwithstanding he that is least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.” The meaning is simply this, John was greater than the prophets, in the sense of occupying a position in the economy of God much in advance of them; being the dawn of a new dispensation, and having seen with his eyes, “the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world.” But his career ended before the Kingdom of Heaven was fully constituted and filled with power and glory on the day of Pentecost, therefore the very least, i. e. any common saint in the Kingdom of Heaven, after it reached its perfected glory of holiness, was greater than John the Baptist; as much so as a wholly sanctified soul occupies a higher plain of divine illumination than one in the first measure of grace. The words of Christ concerning John strikingly brings out the exalted privilege of God’s saints who stand in the glory of perfected holiness. The prophets were the most true and inspired representatives of divine grace under the law; but the humblest sanctified child or God, enjoys an advantage ground over them: yea we may say, is raised two rounds higher than the prophets, and one higher than John, the forerunner of Christ. O that men would wake to the surpassing glory of this best and last dispensation of time! Amen!

__________

TOBACCO FILTH.

-:o:-

I never saw a clean person who used tobacco; like drunkards, they advertise their sins in their persons. They generally have three fashionable accomplishments, viz, they look nasty, act nasty, and smell nasty. Som of these persons realize these facts and attempt to disguise their habit, and especially its odor, by using various perfumes, but in vain: the “profane stench” will out. As many of these tobacco pickles seem to see themselves in difficulty, we annex an average picture for their contemplation:

The chewer looks old prematurely; has a sallow skin; lank, gloomy features, irritable temper and unnatural smile- the whole countenance has a stupid, heathenish expression, the butternut colored lips and mouth, its corners dripping down and staining the beard and bosom, the brindle teeth, the intermittent discharge of tobacco juice everywhere, public and private, in the kitchen, in the church, in and on the stove, on the floors, carpets, side-walks, on himself and on other people; the taking in, twisting about and unloading the quiddy grist, the sickening hawking, the harsh, nasal voice, the whole body, breath, perspiration, clothes saturated with the most abominable odor which inspires the subject and pollutes everything about him. These items, together with that fashionable refinement which ornaments his apartments, even churches the spittoon with its pestilential mouth bejeweled with cigar stubs and tobacco quids, complete the picture.

The smoker and snuffer each present a little different picture, but both are about equally filthy ami heathenish. The unseemly pipe, cigar and cigarette, the sucking and puffing, the selfish insolence of the smoker in forcing the poisonous smoke, after having been in his dirty month and diseased lungs, into the clothes food and drink, into the apartments, faces, mouths and lungs of clean persons, ladies and children especially, may be more fashionable but not more clean. The snuffer changes the seat of war to the nose, which he makes a point of great interest. On which he bestows great pains, feeling it, snuffing it, staining it, blowing it, and wiping it almost constantly. What an undesirable qualfiication in a cook must be the use of tobac-  in any form, especially smoking, snuffing, and snuff eating, everything must have a tobbacco flavor. Imagine a smoking or snuffing cook making bread or pastry, cooking meat, etc., her bead bent over her work mouth ornamented with an ancient pipe, which s..efills betimes; or if a snuffer, stopping now and then to take a pinch, or to wipe the opaque drop which oscillates on the point of her nose, or yeilding to the force of gravity falls int —.

What a prince of dirty fellows then is he who uses tobacco in two or more ways! Reader, do you use tobacco? We have given your picture as clean people see you. What does God think of your nasty idolatry? Pure boys mid girls shun tobacco, those who use it and the places where it is sold. It pollutes body, mind and soul.

CHRIST ALL AND IN ALL.

_____

Dear Trumpet Readers: — May God bless you and keep you from all appearance of evil is my prayer. I am saved and kept by the power of God, through Christ Jesus our Lord. “Blessed is the man who trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is” — Jer. 17:7. “The name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous runneth into it and are safe. — Prov. 18:10. The Holy Ghost alone can teach and convince you of the sublime truths contained in these Scriptures. It is not your feelings or your doings that can save you. Christ is all. Are you mourning oversin, and longing for assured forgiveness? Christ is all. To Him gave all the prophets witness, that through His name, whosoever believeth in Him should have remission of sins. Do you want peace with God? Christ is all. “Therefore being justified by faith we have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Do you want righteousness? Christ is all. “For He hath made Him to be sin for us who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.” Do you want to be sanctified? Christ is all. “By the which will we are sanctified, through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” Do you want to be kept from sin and satan? Christ is all. “Wherelore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him; seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.” Do you want to be certain, unworthy as you are, that you are an acceptable person with a holy God? Christ is all. “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus.” Now what can you want more? “We know when He shall appear we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.” — 1 John 3:2 If you look at your feelings and doings for salvation, it is like a person trying to climb a steep mountain of sand, every effort slides him lower. Our poor feelings and our doings are as shifting as the sand. There is nothing in either for faith to lay hold of, but when faith looking away from our feelings and doings takes fast hold of Christ, we are at once on the Rock of Ages. This is the difference between saving faith, and all mere spurious faith, which really is only unbelief. If you obtain the precious faith of God you look at Christ; if false faith you are lo king at yourself your feelings, and your doings. The departure of the servant of Christ, reminds us of the death of St. Stephen of old; a glorified Christ in Heaven the object of faith to each of them, neither of them had a single hope below. Christ rejected on earth and glorified in Heaven What a contrast! Yes, the rejection or acceptance of Christ makes this immense difference. It is quite true that all the wretchedness and misery of this world came by sin, but it is the rejecting of Christ is the cause of its continuance. You see the wretched drunkard reeling from the dram-house, led by a thin pale faced half starved child. The mother having sunk into the crave, slowly murdered by him, who called himself a father and husband. Poor drunkard, drunk or sober the cause of all thy misery is this, thou art a rejecter of Christ. Christ in thy family would have turned a hell into heaven. Look where you will on earth, it is a Christ rejecting world, for eighteen hundred years has Christ been rejected by the succeeding generations of men. The few who through grace have received Him have all been hated by the world, and many of them persscuted to deat.. You may have as much of the world’s false religion as you please, and the world will praise you, but if Christ is your all, the world will hate you even as it hated Him. When Jesus looked upon the City of the pharisees He wept. Babylon may fight, and wrangle, and stamp, and storm, but a true christian when he looks at the masses of rejecters around him will not fight, but weeping will seek to save; and it grieves him to see sect Babylon, which calls itself the church, dishonoring Christ as much is the world. What deceit, what covtousness, what selfishness, hatred, malice, cruet ty, and oppression, in sect Babylon. Oh, what a contrast in Christ’s true Church, where they are all of one mind, and all speak the same thing. Christ’s Church is not divided. When one member suffers all the members suffer with it.

Jesus is all and in all, and the Holy Ghost leads and guides us into all truth. And dearly beloved ones, when we reach the heavenly shore Jesus is all and in all. No rejecters there, no deceivers, no wring of sin felt here, no drunkard walks the golden streets, no liar, no slave driver, no bigoted sectarian there, no sorrow, no pain; not a sigh, a groan, nor a tear there. God is there, and in His presence there is fulness of joy, at His right hand pleasures forevermore. There is a moment fast approaching, when all who are Christ’s shall be translated both soul and body. We who are alive and remain shall be caught up. Yes, in a moment in the twinkling of an eye, our vile body shall be changed, and fashioned like unto the glorious body of Christ. Reader, this is my blessed hope. What is yours? It is not that I am better than you, therefore worthy of such a place. Oh no I was a sinner, but am now saved by grace. I was the very chief of sinners, but Christ is my all. Do you ask what can fit you for that happy holy place. My answer — nay God’s answer is, Christ alone. Yes. it is the unquestionable privilege of all believers to give thanks unto the Father, who hath made them meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light — 2 Col. 1:12-14. And ye are complete in Christ. Reader, this is all true whether you enjoy it or not. The more you walk with God in the light, the more you will enjoy. Remember it is not your feelings or your works. Christ is all and in all. The head of the Church, which is His body. Amen!

We ask the prayers of all the holy saints.

Yours in Jesus.

__________

A POINT OF DUTY.

—:0:—

Dear Saints in the Lord: — I am still saved. God is blessing me more and more, and by His grace He has brought me through strong and great trials. I thought it a duty to write a little about our duty in supporting right things, and not to support the wrongand evil things. Some think it not their duty to help the Gospel and to helps the poor just because they have found it wrong to support the sect preachers, because they throw away and ignore so much of God’s Word, and teach so much false doctrine not contained in the Scriptures, and because they set a price on the Gospel and hire out to preach by the year. Of course it is wrong to support such crooked, contradicting janglers. But it is our duty to see that the true ministers of God are not kept at home because of the lack of a little means. The Word says, Give as God prospers us. And again He says, give as of ability. Matthew 25:41—46 leads: “Then shall He say also unto them on His left hand, depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and His angels: for I was a hungered, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty and ye gave me no drink, etc.; and the 45th verse reads: Inasmuch as ye did it not to one f the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment, etc. Read now and see how God promises to bless us when we do help the righteous cause. 2 Cor. 9 and beginning at the 8th verse: “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you: that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth forever, etc. Read 1 Cor. 9 and beginning at the 7th verse: Who goeth at any time a warfare at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? 9th verse, For it is written in the law of Moses, thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn, etc. Phil. 4:15, 16, reads: — “Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity.” Christ commended the woman that threw two mites into the treasury, because He said, she hath done what she could, or what she was able to do. Yet we are not to uphold laziness. 2 Thes. 3:10-12 reads: “For even when we wore with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at as, but are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work and eat their own bread.”

A CALL TO THE WORK.

_____

Dear Readers: — Having read another earnest call for workers, from San Diego, we feel very much inclined to answer it, and if Father makes clear His will in the matter by opening the way financially as nothing else is in the way — we will go. Also Bro. Myers desires our help in Yolo Co., but we are destitute of means at present and cannot go. Souls are starving on this coast, for spiritual food, and those who would gladly break unto them the Bread of Life, are hindered for want of means to answer the worthy calls. Who will thus “consecrate himself thisday unto God.” Beloved, you who desire to do all in your power for Him who has done somuch for you, this word is spoken. “Give and it shall be given unto you again,” etc. ‘‘He that giveth to the poor lendeth to the Lord.” “Muzzle not the ox that treadeth out the corn.” “Except a man forsaketh all that he hath,” etc. “He that would come after me, let him deny himself, etc. O beloved! sacrifice is sweet for the Lord! If you have nothing to give, without practicing some severe self denial of luxury, and comfort, do it, and test that blessed promise — “I will open the windows of Heaven, and pour you out such a blessing that there shall not be room to receive it.” Amen. So let it speedily, be Lord: for thy handmaid waiteth, with hopeful anxiety to help to stop the terrible tide, going down, down to eternal death.

We have just received a letter from Mrs. N. A. Eaton, of Elizabeth, W. Va. who makes an earnst appeal to the children of God everywhere to pray for her. She says that the Lord has withdrawn His Spirit from her, and her life has been a miserable one, and unless His Spirit returns she will be ruined, wretched, and undone forever and ever. She has suffered in this seemingly hopeless condition for a long time, and is now so afflicted in body that she is scarcely able to do anything for herself. Please remember her at the throne of grace.

Mr William Duncan of this place had his eyes severely hurl by Dynamite, blasting rocks the 14th of Jan. He feels no earthly phyiscian can do him any good. He would like to have the saints all pray that if it is the Lord’s will he may be healed. He will give Him all the glory. He is wholly given up to the Lord, and feels that it was done for some good. He attended the saints, meeting this fall, and is in sympathy with the truth. He especially requests Bro. and sister J. W. Byers to pray for him.

Dear Saints: — I feel led to write a few lines to God’s dear children concerning my troubles. I earnestly ask the prayers of all God’s children. I have been cast into prison, falsely. Oh I do praise God that I have been delivered from sect babylon. That is the cause of my being in prison. There was an M. E. meeting house burned down in my neighborhood, and I am accused of the deed because I am opposed to sect babylon. But praise God I am innocent. Dear saints, pray for me that I may be filled with the Holy Ghost and will fire from on high. I love to read the testimonies of the saints. Praise the Lord … have been reading them this morning. I am only justified, but the world has people sure for me. My wife is sick with fever, and I do earnestly ask the prayers of all the dear Trumpet readers that she may be healed.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD

Meridian, Miss. Jan. 20.

Dear Saints: — We are still blessed with life, health, and the manifold mercies of God. Above ad things the love of God shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit richly given us. Out last report, we believe was from Collinsville. There was not the work done there we had hoped. A few souls made a start to serve God. But the deceiver has put it into many hearts here in the South to think that they can come out and get salvation without taking the cross of Christ, or His yoke upon them, hence ..n their unwillingness to do this, they do not gel free in their souls. Some probably believed unto righteousness if they did not wholly confess unto salvation. One sinner came out boldly the last night, and was able to praise God in a testimony that God had saved him. A few souls were sanctified wholly, and other hears were strengthened. Bro. Warren began a very promising singing school after the meeting closed, which after three-lessons was interrn..ted by cold, rainy weather, and the ill health of some of the class. In the short time they learned last. It seems to us very strange that there are not a number of vocal music teachers out in the field preparing the way for the glorious songs that God is sending down from heaven. Next to the work of the ministry, we scarcely see a more useful field. The glorious gift of song in the saints of the Most High, is doing a mighty work to knock down Jericho walls of prejudice, and enlist men and women in the ranks of salvation. We have been here in a place called Oak Grove, twelve miles from Meridian, nearly a week. A few meetings have been held under unfavorable circumstances, but God is working some on the hearts of the people, and we expect in next issue to report something for God, The weather now is beautiful, like pleasant fall weather. Thank God for the prayers of all the saints, which we often feel lifting up our souls in the great field of battle. O continue to pray much. We also remember you often in much prayer and supplication to God Yours in much love. Amen.

Dear Brethren: — We are happy to report to you that we still find a complete salvation in Jesus. The way we keep it is by watching and praying and trusting Him. Well the church at Hamilton. Gratiot Co. met at their tense of worship on Christains morning to spend the day in prayer, and me Lord so blessed our efforts that prayer meetings continued almost every day and night until Sunday nigh Jan. 18 with great access to the Lord Several were convicted for and attained to a deeper work and experience than ever before. Several souls were saved. Also much prejudice broken up and cleared away, while the best of order prevailed during the entire meeting. May the Lord continue to follow after others who were almost persuaded, until they shall yield to Him and be saved.

St. Petersburg, Pa. Jan. 24, 1891.

Dear Saints: — After our last report from St. Petersburg, we commenced the great battle at Red Lyon, Jesus giving us the victory. Four souls consecrated for pardon and also sanctification. We left them to be immersed in the watery grave by Bro. Mattren as we had not time to remein, We came on out way to Mechanicsville, where we started to hold up Jesus (Jno. 12:32) with complete victory in our souls. Our Father wonderfully enabled us to send forth the words of eternal truth, which broke down much prejudice and took out the corner stone of the M. E. sect. God bless Bro. Lee and keep him faithful His companion was saved no the last night of the meeting. We commo..or..ted the death and sufferings of our Lord by washing the saints feet, and partaking of the Lord’s supper with seventeen dear saints. God bless them for their kindness to us and administering to our wants. Bro. Isaac Gadsby was acknowledged as an elder in the church of God by the laying on of hands. God bless him and use him to His glory. D. V., we commence a meeting Jan. 30 at this place, and would love to have Bro. A. B. Palmer come here and help us in this state. It he can come he can let us know what it will cost him to come.

To All the Dear Saints of God: — I want to say to all that I am saved and sanctified by a second work of grace, and am sweetly kept in Jesus. The last year has been the happiest year of my life. Truly with the poet I can say, it is better on before. The 11th of Dec. we went to Burbank in Wayne Co. O. We had meetings in that neighborhood for six weeks. A few souls were saved, some sanctified and a few healed. Truly the Lord was with His people at that place. The stumbling blocks were moved out of the way by them getting saved. The has Saturday Bro. Spackey came. O praise the Lord! It did cheer our souls to see his face. On the Thursday following in the evening the saints met to obey the Lord’s commands. Sixteen dear saints were present and all were filled with new wine. At that meeting one dear soul was sanctified. She was converted about ten days before, having been a member of the Disciple sect. The meeting closed and all learned to be one with one another. I ask all the dear saints to remember me in your prayers. We will commence a meeting near Pioneer, Williams Co. O. Feb. 5th.

Dear Brethren: — I commenced meeting the 30th of Dec., and continued until the night of the 10th of Jan., and there were 13 or 14 conversions. Seven consecrated for sanctification, and received the desire of their heart. We closed with a glorious ordinance meeting in which 16 dear children of God participated, for the the first time, and was made to realize what Jesus said: “If ye know these things, happy are ye if you do them.” We look our leave of the brethren, and went about 30 mile east to Short Creek, where we held meeting Saturday night, Sunday and Sunday night. One soul saved, and in the future there can be a great work done for the Lord.

Uhrichville, Jan. 20, 1891.

Dear Brethren: — Wife and I are glad to give our testimony to the Trumpet readers. We are sweetly saved in Jesus this evening. All glory to His most precious name! We have been endeavoring to hold up the banner of holiness in this sin cursed and sect ridden place for nearly five years, with much sect opposition, but always with victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. But I know the work was much hindered by our staying in sect babylon; but glory to our God, Bro. R. Gooding of Shipshewana, Ind. came here and held some meetings which closed last Thursday night, with grand results. The church which consisted of but a few names was much strengthened. We are now out of sect confusion and pulling from the shore, where there is clear sailing and no sect or creed snags to bother us. The sword of the Spirit wielded by brother Gooding has cut all the shorelines, and set us adrift upon the great ocean of God’s infinite love, with the Lord Jesus Christ as our hemlsman; and we are not afraid but that we will reach the other shore in perfect safety. Glory to His name! May the Lord help you in your work and make the Trumpet a weekly soon. You will hear from us often, the Lord willing.

Yours in Christ.

Bellefontaine, O. Jan. 16, 1891.

Dear Saints: — God bless you all. Amen In company with brother J. N. Howard, we commenced a meeting in Indiana not far from Willshire, O , and as the meeting progressed the brethren hired a hall.. in Willshire, and we moved the meeting to the town and continued it a short time with good effect. There were several professed pardon, and a few claimed sanctification. There had been difficulty among the saints which was about all cleared away, and we trust the dear ones will he wise enough to keep clear from strife. There were several acknowledged the truth, which we hope will come to the Lord in the near future and be saved. At the close of the Willshire meeting Bros. Howard and Basore went to Bro. Hessongs about five miles southeast of Willshire, and I took Bros. Welch and Cross and went to Bro. Youngs about five miles west of Willshire, where we commenced a meeting in the name of Jesus Christ. At this meeting during our stay at this place there were about forty nine consecrations in all; twenty seven for pardon, and twenty two for sanctification, and we hope others will yet get saved before the meeting closes; for the brethren continued the meeting after we left to come here. Praise God! and to Him be all the glory forever and ever. Now when we arrived in Log in Co. O.. we found Bro Howard had arrived the day before, and that Bro. To all the Saints Greeting: — We held a meeting at the Centennial school house at Cedar Vale, Kan., which lasted sixteen days with glorious victory. There were about twenty seven consecrations in all; five persons baptized; and nine at the altar the last night of the meeting. Some very wicked men were saved and threw away their tobacco, and quite a number came out of babylon. People came from 15 miles to the meeting. There was one case of healing, and the saints were strengthened and settled in the Lord.

Dear Saints: — The Lord bless you all. We are having real victory in our souls. We are in a place where there has been no meeting for many years. The Word is convicting the people of their lost condition, and one soul has been saved since we came here, and many more are almost persuaded to yield to Jesus who is able to save their souls. The peoples hearts are hardened through the deception of false preachers who come in sheep’s clothins, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. I praise God that the Word of God does expose the works of the devil.

Dear Trumpet Reader: — May the richest of God’s blessings be multiplied abundantly unto you, and may the love of Christ always constrain you to harder work for the Master. We are still holding up the standard for the people and telling sinners of God’s wonderful love Glory to God! About five weeks ago I felt impressed to commence a work among the Scandinavians in this place. But to be sure that it was from God, I waited on the Lord, when one day a little over two weeks ago a Sweedish man came up to me on the street with a request from many for me to start meetings in their language. So I commenced meeting Sunday the 11th We had a real good meeting The Lord hiessed us in feeding the flock. Sunday ..e 18th, we had another meeting. The Lord is convicting hearts for the fulness. The Scandinavian people here have been starved; they are hungering and thirsting for spiritual food. Pray, dear saints, for the success in this work, and that God will raise up messengers to spread the Evening Light to this people who have been kept in darkness by shepherds who feed themselves off the flock and feed not the flock.

This morning God wonderfully blesses my soul with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places. I arrived here Saturday, preached in the Church of God (?) house (Winebrenarian) yesterday (Sunday) morning and evening; have the promise of the Presbyterian house in Gardner this week in which we expect to battle for the Lord. Where we will hold meeting next Sunday it doth not yet appear, for we expect by that time, doors will closed against us: but we know God is with us in mighty power, and a door effectual will be opened some where for the people are hungering for light and they must have it. God has promised to be with us even unto the end of the world, and I believe He will do it. Hallelujah! I expert to be with the Cheshire church Saturday evening and Sunday morning Feb. 7 and 8. Expect to start home from here Monday 2nd of Feb. May the Lord bless and keep you all in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Dear Trumpet Readers: — Dec. 27th, we came to this place in the name of the Lord: and held some meetings in brother Hevel’s house near Waterloo, Ind, where the Lord met with us in mighty power with showers of blessings upon the saints. We next commenced meeting 3 1/2 miles east of Auburn where we found the church in quite a good condition. The Lord is at work with His people. Some have found the Lord to the joy of their souls. Hallelujah! The church here was very axnious to have us make it our home at Auburn. The Lord moved gloriously in the matter. Feeling it to be His perfect will, we accordingly on Jan. 12th moved here to Auburn from Deshler, O., and have a pleasant home. Bless the Lord! Pray for us.

Dear Saints: — I can say to the glory of God that He gives peace and victory to my soul; saves and keeps me each day by His power. I am 19 years old, lived nearly three years with the sects, where I tried earnestly to servo Christ, but did not know what it was to be saved from sin.

In the latter part of last March, I went to the northern part of this state, and for the first ..ime heard the true Gospel preached by Bro’s. Sheldon and Grover. There the Lord showed me my undone condition, led me to forsake my earthly idols and walk in this evening light. What a contrast between my past and present experience! Once where earthly cares, pride, and passions ruled, now patience, joy and peace prevail, and though the world may look upon me as a “poor saint” I have a “treasure that fadeth not away.” Glory in the name of Jesus! I have lived here nearly four months, most of which time I have been absent from any of the saints, but the Lord is with me, and wonderfully blesses my soul in spite of all the powers of the adversary. We expect Bro. Grover and others will visit this place soon, and look for a great salvation work to be done here in Jesus’ name. God bless you all.

Dear Saints: — I thought I would write my testimony to the Trumpet. I am not saved. I was saved once, but did not hold out. I am a girl 13 years of age. I would like to have all the dear saints pray for me that I may get back in my place. I have started to read the Bible through, but have not got very far yet. I love to read that dear book. I go to school and am in the 6th grade. My teachers are trying to serve the Lord in a sect. We have reading from the Bible every morning, and repeat the Lord’s prayer together and sing. Mamma takes the Gospel Trumpet, and I love to read it. I ask all the dear saints to pray for me.

Elyria, O.

Dear Saints: — I am so glad that I am saved, and willing to walk in the light as He is in the light; and have sweet fellowship with all the saints of God. I love to read the Gospel Trumpet; it is a very welcome visitor to me, for I am alone here, and get very homesick to meet with the saints to worship God. But I can trust our dear Father for all things, and know all things work together for good to them that love Him. I want to give you a little of my experience. Last summer I received a paper published by T. H. Low. I had read about the man in the Trumpet, but I thought I must read it, and find out for myself, whether he was right or not. I cannot tell all that was in it, but he talked against the ordinances, and called them dead works. After reading the paper I felt very bad, and said can these things be so. And I thought I need not be in doubt, for God has promised to give wisdom to all those who ask of Him. So I knelt down and asked the Lord to guide me in the right way, and not let me be deceived, and keep me in the light that I might know the truth. I rose up and went to my work, and presently I was led to read the disciples commission, that Christ gave then when He left this world. I went and found the place. Matt. 28:19, 20, and read: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Praise God I had peace after that. Low said that the Holy Ghost baptism was to take the place of water baptism. He is mistaken for the disciples were not commanded to baptize with the Holy Ghost, or in it, but only in the name. I sent; a card telling him not to send me any more of his papers, for I did not want them. Pray for me that I may be kept humble, and do the will of God in all things.

Your sister in Christ.

Dearly Beloved Saints: — May grace mercy, and peace be multiplied. I do to much thank God for His Holy Spirit, that enables His children to discern between the clean and the unclean. Every true child of God is willing to take the whole Word of God. There are some professing holiness in this part of the country, claiming they have been called of God to preach the Gospel, and they are doing the work of the devil; telling the people that the holiness people are just as much of a sect as any other. I do praise God that He gives His children wisdom, that they can discern between the true and the false. He that is of God heareth God’s Word. Amen!

Dear Ones in Jesus — May God bless you all and the dear saints of the Lord, and all the Trumpet readers, and keep you all filled with His glory and power unto the end. It does my soul much good to read the testimonies of those who are saved, and to hear from you all. It certianly is a glorious medium, through which we can testify to thousands what the Lord has done for us. Glory to His name forever and ever! I am one of the most unworthy of all God’s children, but through His abundant mercy I am saved this present moment, by faith which is in Jesus Christ our Lord. The Lord says, “Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you, and this is His commandment that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ; and love one another as He gave us commandment.” I am so ..lad I find all I need in Jesus, that name so precious. I at one time loved “mother name even the M. E., but that has nothing in it for me since I have Jesus. They do not keep the commandments of Him I love. They do not keep themselves unspotted from the world. They love the friendship of the world, which the Word of God says is enmity with God. Now how can a man be a child of God and enemy of God at the same time? They conform to the world in their names, and maxims, and fashions, when the Word says, be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Dear Trumpet Readers: — I feel led of the Lord to send my testimony, for the first time, to the Trumpet. I was convicted of my sins twenty years ago, and went to the M. E. pastor, a very learned man, for advice about my soul. He told me all I lacked was to join the M. E. church. But I afterward found out differently, and two years ago I gave my heart to God and He forgave my sins; then there was hungering and thirsting in my soul to be sanctified, and I put all on the Altar and the Altar sanctified the gift. Glory to God!

Bro. Warner and Co. were here and held meeting two weeks, and the Lord was with them in much power, and it was a glorious meeting. I want all the saints to pray for me, for the harvest is ripe and the dear Lord has bid me go and work for the salvation of souls, and preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

Your Bro. in Christ.

OBITUARIES.

DIED — in Greenbush township, Clinton Co, Mich., Dec. 12, 1890, sister Margaret Cogswell, aged 61 years 2 mo’s, and 21 days. She has had poor health for about four years, but God, through prayer and by the laying on of hands, has wonderfully relieved and strengthened her time after time, and she would be enabled to attend meeting even when we were bolding some nine miles away. But this last summer and fall we have had meeting at their house every Sunday, and she would always give in her testimony. The last Sunday before her death she gave in a glorious testimony, and said she expected that would be the last meeting she would ever be in on earth, and said that she expected before another Sunday to be in a greater one. She was filled with the Spirit and exhorted sinners and all to make sure work of Heaven. She died in the triumph of a living faith. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” — Psa. 116:15. But He says He takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked. We read in Matt. 25:46. “They shall go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into life eternal.” She leaves seven children to mourn their loss.

In memory of Della Horrington drowned July 14, 1887, aged 19 years and 10 mo’s.

Dearest Della, thou hast left us,
Thou hast found a watery grave;
And perhaps God heard your pleading
And with Jesus thou art saved.

Mother, you will miss your darling
As you took around the room
At the little household comforts,
And will whisper, he is gone.

He is gone, yet Jesus called thee
As the waters o’er the rolled,
Called thee home, to dwell forever
Safe within the Shepherd’s fold.

But your boy has crossed the river
Just a little while before;
And perhaps n mother’s pleading
Opened wide the portal door.

Hark! Me thinks I hear the echo
Coming from the other shore:
Dearest Mother, weep no longer,
You will meet your boy once more.

Mary K., wife of A. B. Cavenee, daugh for G. G. & N. J. Montgomery, was born June 23rd 1871; was married April 16th 1890. Died Dec. 29th 1890.

About three years ago she made a profession of religion, and was sanctified and lived a pure and holy life for some time. She said that she felt it her duty to work for the Master, but getting into the association of unholy young people, she was led astray into the world; but by the goodness and mercy of God, she was happily converted before her death. Oh how happy she was although very weak in body. By the power of the Holy Spirit she was enabled to shout the praises of God, and sing the beautiful hymns, “Savior More Than Life To Me,” “and Jesus Lover of My Soul.” When her friends would inquire you she felt, her answer was, “My soul is full of the love of God.” With a request to her husband and brother to meet her in that better land, she passed away. Dear saints, pray for us in our sad bereavment, that we may all meet her in that better loud. Pray for her husband who is unconverted that he may meet her in glory.

Died — in Fenwick, Out. Jan 10, 1891, Clara Viola Straun, agen 3 years 1 mo. and 13 days.

This little son and daughter of our Bro. and sister Straun were taken down with the Measles, Roy the day after Christmas, and Clara the day before New Years, after the Measles had disappeared the children were both attacked with Inflamation of the Lungs, and though every thing was done that could be done to save their lives, they passed within a day or two of each other. Both little coffins were earned to the grave at the same time. Funeral services were held at the North Petham Presbyterian church, conducted by Bro. G. T. Clayton. Several neighbors of Bro. Straun who are much opposed to the truth attended the services, also some of the North Pelham people. Let us pray that the truth they heard may bear much fruit. This is the first time death has entered this family, and it has taken two lovely children. Bro and sister Straun have the deepest sympathy of all in this bereavment, and we are glad we can say they are resting upon the Savior and that He is comforting them as none of us could possibly do.

Lines written upon the death of Roy and Clara Straun.

Our darlings are gone on before us
T..h.. beautiful mansions above;
A shadow of sadness comes o’er us,
As we pure with the children we love.

And yet if a word would recall them —
Would bring them back into our home,
We could not tell what might befall h..m
We would not dare bid them to come.

We are sure that all sorrows and sadness
Are past for there dear ones of ours;
We know they ha..e nothing but gladness,
As they wonder ..id heaven’s bright flowers.

And because our way is more lonely,
As we miss their bright faces each day,
Would we think of our own sadness only
And call them from Heaven away?

Oh no, ’tis the Lord who has taken
Our beautiful daughter and son;
And today with our faith all unshaker,
We can say, Father, thy will be done.

Not long shall we miss their bright faces,
Not long will they wait for us there;
We too soon shall dwell in the places
Prepared in the mansions so fair.

For the day even now is dawning,
When Jesus will come for His own;
And we’ll sing our glad songs, in the morning
With our loved ones around the bright throne

She had been a servant of the Lord a number of years, and like Simeon, lived to see the evening light, salvation. — Luke 2:30, and was sanctified while sister Mary and I were holding meeting near Covert. She met with the saints before her departure, and rejoiced for the happy privilege of testifying to the saving and keeping power of her dear Savior, etc. Let others take warning, and be also ready.

PARENTS, MISTAKE.

—:o:—

Dear Readers: — I thought I would write a few lines for the Lord. Exod. 20:12 —  “Honor thy father and mother: that thy days may belong upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” This is all very true. All children should obey and honor their parents. But in the second place, parents should not provoke their children to anger. Paul says in Eph. 6:4. “And ye fathers provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” In the first place parents are the fruit for disobedient children; for parents have a way of commanding their children. For instance, we will say there are three boys, and the father will say. John, go and do so and so. Another will say, Why cannot Samuel do it? Then the father will say, Samuel, you go and do it. Now just because John whined, he made Samuel do it. So the father showed partiality, and ruined that boy of obeying him. Then parents will wonder why their children do not obey them. This is the reason. Also parents will wonder why their children will swear and take the name of God in vain. Rom. 3:15. It is because they are full of cursing and bitterness. It is also wondered why boys are quick to use the knife. Ver. 13. It because of parents quick to she blood. Verse 13. Their threat is an open sepulcher. With their tongues they have used deceit.. the poison of asps is under their lips. If you learn a dog to kill sheep, be is going to kill them. So it it with a boy or girl. If you teach them to curse or use profane language, they are going to use it. Also parents teach their children to lie. And wonder why it is they lie to them. I will tell you. Matt. 7:3-5. How can parents take the mote out of their children’s eye, and behold the beam is in their own eye? First take t.. beam out of your eye, and then you can take it out of other’s eyes. To look back and see the darkness, that I have come through, it makes me think of childhood days that have past, for I did know God. In speaking of parents teaching their children to lie, I was taught in this way. My parents told me that if I would tell the truth they would not whip me, that is when I did something wrong. And if it was something that raised my father’s temper, he would whip me. So you see he lied to me.

“The truth itself is not believed
From one who often has deceived.”

So you see I was deceived and did not believe him, and told a lie to get out of a whipping. Thus he taught me to he. I did not fear to toll another, because I knew by so doing I would get out of a whipping. Parents should correct their children, and whatever they tell them to do make them do it, and they will always be obedient to them, honor them, and love them. If parents will honor their children, their children will honor them in Spirit and in truth. Very often parents are so crabbed and cross with their children that they make their lives miserable. They cuff and slap them, and think they ought to stand it and never say a word. They make no allowance for what they do or their wrongs.

“Anger and pride are both unwise,
Vinegar never catches flies.”

Is this pure holiness? Does God’s Book teach that? See Gal. 5:21-23. We find that the Spirit is love, charity, and charity covers all peace and joy. Now I will close hoping that all parents who read this will be more loving, and kind to their children.

Your brother in the light.

Dear Saints, — I am saved and sanctified, and kept by the power of God, and my soul is filled with His love continually. I want to tell the whole world how good the Lord is to me, and to all that obey Him. May He keep them all from the evils of this world. There is so much need of more firmness, and faith in God. Well I do love the Word of God, and know it is true, and my soul is made to feast upon the riches it contains. It means so much to live in the presence of the Lord. I am trusting in the Lord for all things, ready to be revealed in the last times.

Dear Readers: — When the dear brethren came through this part of the country preaching holiness, I presented my body unto the Lord, a living sacrifice, and O what a blessing I did receive. I am fully saved just now, sanctified wholly, and consecrated to do the whole will of God. Oh I do praise God for this glorious freedom. It is a well of living water springing up in our souls.

Dear Brethren: — I was afflicted with Rheumatism, which was so painful that I was unable to walk straight, but I trusted it to the Lord, and last April wrote to the Trumpet family for them to pray for my healing, and the prayers of the righteous were heard, and the Lord healed me I also had running sores, above my ankles, for over two years, from which I have suffered much, but am now almost healed. Blessed be the name of the Lord, who is able to heal both soul and body. I praise His name for His love in my soul and ask you all to pray for the conversion of my husband, and my family.

Dear Saints: — May the richest of God’s blessings rest upon you all. Amen. On the first Sunday of this month the Saints at Grand Junction, Mich. prayed for me, as I had requested, while at the same hour the saints at this place met and prayed in our house for the salvation of my soul and the healing of my body from Consumption. I had been taking medicine for months, but seemed to get no better, but was rather getting worse as I thought. The next day after the saints prayed for me I stopped taking the Dr’s, medicine, and at 4. 35 P. M., my father and I kneeled and prayed. God wonderfully blessed my soul and I believe I am healed. There is a great change in my body which I felt that evening after we prayed. Yet I am very weak and poor in flesh, but I am trusting in God for all things, and He will do what is best for me, I was seeking and trying to trust God before, but did not feel justified. Now I can say I am saved. Pray for me.

Kenesaw, Neb.

Dear Saints: — We praise God that we are all standing firm in the Lord, and are kept by the mighty power of God. And He keeps us in the unity of the Spirit, so we can say the Lord is our helper. We have three meetings a week and the promised Comforter is with us. I am trusting the Lord for all things. “They that trust the Lord shall be as mount Zion which cannot be moved, but abideth forever.” I lived a member of the M. E. sect for twenty years and never heard a sermon preached on sanctification. I praise the Lord that He directed holy ministers to Kenesaw, Neb who taught the people full and complete Bible salvation. Near one year ago, I laid myself upon the Altar and the Altar sanctified the gift. The Lord then taught me what He would have me to do and I obeyed the Divine direction. I am out of all sects and sect confusion. I have belonged to four different secret societies I am out of them all. Praise the Lord! I am redeemed from all worldly socials, concerts, sect festivals, or any other trick the devil may invent. I am free from all sin, eating of that heavenly manna and drinking from that spiritual Rock which makes glad the city of God.

Your brother saved and wholly sanctified.

To all the Saints Greeting: — I am praising God to day that I am still saved, and trusting in Him. I have no other desire out to do His will. I know we can go to Him at all times of affliction, if we have faith to believe He will grant what we ask. I was somwhat afflicted Sunday morning. I thought God wanted me to obey His Word — Jas. 5:13, 14. I did so, and went to meeting, when I could not stand on my feet before. Oh bless the Lord! I know He keeps me from all sin every day. Pray for me that I may ever be kept low and humble at Jesus’ feet.

Dear Saints: — I believe it will be to the glory of God for me to write my testimony. His Word says, “Ye are my witnesses.” And I am praising God for His wonderful love to me I am saved by the precious blood of Jesus, and sanctified by the power of the Holy Ghost, and I am resting on Christ Jesus my sure foundation; and upon which no other can stand, though waves of tribulation are cast against me, and temptest of storm approach, I am not overthrown, for my feet are founded upon the Rock, which will never give way. Praise the holy name of the Lord forever! I know that the Almighty power of God, is keeping me from the power of the enemy. Although he comes up in many ways to try my faith and to overthrow me, yet I fear not. For the Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid? Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear. 27th Psalm. For in the time of trouble He will hide me in His pavilion, and in His pavilion I am hiding now. O, I do praise the blessed name of Jesus, for the perfect peace which I have, that floods my soul with deep joy, inexpressable the joy that comes from obedience to His will, which yields the peaceable fruits of righteousness. I am walking in the light, as God gives me light, I obey Him by walking in it. And as He points out duty, by His help I am ready to do it. I do praise God, that it is His own dear hand; that leads me, and that I am not led by the delusive spirit; but I feel the firm clasp of my Heavenly Father’s hand, which will never release my own, if I prove faithful. His precious Word says: “Wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart.” And as the flowers, which He hath made, takes in the refreshing dew, so my soul drinks of the blessings from these precious truths. And I know the deep meaning of waiting on the Lord and what it is to feel the blessed assurance of His guiding power; as I go to Him and ask to be guided through the duties of each day, and wait before Him to be shown what that duty is, how clearly He points out each duty, and gives me strength and courage to perform them. My life is hid away in the sweet will of God who saves, and keeps me from all sin. Praise His holy name! His Word says: “Behold we count them happy which endure.” — James 5:2. Dear saints of God, pray for me, that I may endure, and keep the faith unto the end of life, that I may be ready to be reve ded at the last day. Your sister in the love of Jesus.

Dear Saints: — I feel led of the Spirit a send in my testimony. I love Jesus today, and I love the narrow way with all my heart. Oh I do bless God for what I feel in my soul. I know He saves and sanctifies me just now. We have no Holy Ghost meetings to attend, but are daily praying to God to send workers here. They will find a home with us. I am trusting God for complete healing. Dear saints, pray for me that I may be kept humble.

Dear Saints: — I can testify this morning that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses me from all sin. Bless the Lord! A long time we lived in sin and tried to do the will of God, but failed. About eighteen months ago A. A. Kinzie preached the true light of the Gospel at this place, and a few have been awakened and have accepted the truth, and are walking in the light of God. For in Him is light and in Him is no darkness at all — 1 John 1:5. Glory be to His holy name. We have prayer meetings twice a wee: and the Lord is with us in mighty power.

I remain your free brother in Christ sanctified to do the whole will of God. Pray for me.

Dearly Beloved Saints: — I have many trials but trust it all with the Lord knowing His grace is sufficient for us, and all things are working together for my good; for my kind Father will not permit one trial that is not for my spiritual welfare. Oh I do thank God for the peace that fills my soul. I am so glad He opened my eyes and gave me the willingness to walk in the light. When I was in the M. E. sect I loved it as my life, and grieved over its short coinings and longed for a reformation: but as soon as the Lord showed me the evils of sectism and that we belong to the Church as soon as we are converted, I left them and have never had the least desire to join them since. I long to see other come into the light and have this peace which Christ alone can give. May God bless all the dear saints and keep them in perfect fellowship, free from all divisions and works of the evil one is, my fervent prayer.

Dear Saints: — I want to speak for Jesus because He does so much for me day by day, and has delivered me from sect babylon and placed My feet upon the Rook Christ Jesus, and does so sweetly save me just now from all sin, and sanctifies me wholly. I do praise God for what He has done for us here in Wymore. We are a happy band of God’s little ones. King Jens is the Shepherd of the flock, and the sheep hear and know His voice. O I do feel to praise God for the Evening Light which shines in my pathway, life of holiness unto the Lord. Bro. Geo. and sister Mary Cole stopped one night with us, and gave us a good Bible lesson. Dear Readers of the Trumpet: — God bless you all for Jesus’ sake. Amen. This morning finds me saved and rejoicing in God the Rock of my salvation. O praise the dear Lord for all His goodness to me in saving my soul and leading me out of natures darkness into His marvelous light. O I do thank God that He gave me a willing heart to accept His Word and to follow Him. I do love to do His will in all things. Though many the trials I meet, praise God He will have a fried people. He says, many shall be purified made while and tried; but the trial of our faith worketh patience, and patience experience, and experience hope, and hope maketh not ashamed because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. Praise God! I am determined to stand firm for Him by His assisting grace. May the dear Lord help His children to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might, and to put on the whole armor of Lord that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Praise God He will never forsake His saints that put their trust in Him.

East Jordan, Mich.

Dear Saints: — I am still saved in Jesus. Praise His name! I was brought up in the Roman Catholic church; my parents were Catholics, and so was I for twenty five years. I was a very strong Catholic, and thought it was the only true church of Christ because I knew no better. I knew no church but Roman and Lutheran until I came up here. I never saw a Bible while I was in the Roman church. I was in Richville, Tuscola Co. when I first saw the Bible. It was a strange book to me. I read some in it, and some one told me I would get crazy if I lead that book, so I left it then and went on in my old ways. I thought it would not honor my parents if I left their religion, still I used to read it sometimes. I kept in the race with the devil about three years, then I came to East Jordan and stopped with Bro. M. Haley; he was not saved then. There was a revival in the M. E. church by two ministers by the name of Robinson. Bro. Haley and I attended two or three weeks. I thought I was converted in those meetings; I joined the church on probation and was a member about two years. The Lord blessed me wonderfully for about two or three months, then I began to go back to the world. I heard Bro. Grover preach at this time many times, I thought he was a false teacher. I listened to him and the Truth hurt me so that I would run away from the meetings. I used to talk with brother Grover sometimes, and he said we could live without sin; so did the saints in their testimonies. It was so different from what I had been taught I did not think it possible. Last winter I was hungering and thirsting for righteousness, and so I thought I would go to East Jordan and get a good square meal. I attended Bro. Grover’s meetings for about three weeks and they were a feast to my soul. I was saved in the meeting attended at that time. I came to the altar determined not to leave without the blessing, and the Lord saved me from all sin. Two or three days afterward I was wholly sanctified. Praise the Lord for it. I was a very wicked m.. drunken and profane, played cards, and smoked and chewed tobacco, and today I am free from it all. I rejoice that, though was once lost in sin, today I am alive in Christ Jesus. Pray for me that I may ever be faithful and that we may meet around God’s throne.

Dear Saints: — I feel it would be to the glory of God for me to testify through the Gospel Trumpet. I stand a living witness for God, and dead to the world, and all the vain and trifling things of the same. I am justified, sanctified and satisfied, and I know I will not fall as long as my life is hid with Christ in God. I love God and I love all His people. Pray for me that I may ever stand firm to the end.
