To My Alienated Wife.

By Daniel.

—:o:—

Two years have fled since billows wild,
Wrecked our domestic bark,
And chilled your lore for husband, child,
Mid waters cold and dark.

How wonderful the mystery,
Astonished, men exclaim,
That hearts so knit in unity,
Could ever part in twain.

But “some of them that understand” —
In Daniel we are told ——— 11:35.
Shall fall, but rise in time of end,
Made white and tried as gold.

Thus wisdom speaks in thunder tones,
O earth behold His signs,
The end is nigh, the Savior comes,
How perilous the times.

Our precious boy, so sweet and pure,
Has lost a mother’s love:
His little heart could well endure,
Were she but gone above.

One mother only nature gives,
To every child of earth:
But others now supply the place,
Of her that gave him birth.

O happy day if ever grace,
Shall melt that heart of thine;
That Son may see within thy face,
A mother’s love Divine.

We suffered some adversities,
A portion all must find,
When compassed round by devotees,
Whose creeds we’d left behind.

When pressing to the harvest field,
Of everlasting truth,
And just before the golden yield,
Alas! you turned aloof.

O  how I wish that you could share
In these extatic days:
Enjoy the light of God so pure,
And help to sing His praise.

My soul had longed for more of God,
More glory in the cross;
But never dreamed that it must come
Through such a bitter loss.

I cannot chide His providence,
But count it all the best;
For in each storm of violence
I sink to sweeter rest.

‘Tis good to learn in furnace flame
What Christ the Lord can do:
O blessed be His holy name!
He gently leads me through …

… … … … … …
With colored  fancies rare;
But satan came in deep disguise,
And wrought the dred affair.

Thus came the fiend in Edon fair,
The woman’s heart to win,
With charming words of wisdom rare,
He plunged the earth in sin.

And so betrayed Delilah to,
The Philistines of old,
Her husband; when, yet feigning true.
His secret did unfold.

Again in hell the council sat,
Renewed the cursed plan,
That Adam saw, and Samson met,
To overthrow the man.

And instrument adroitly used,
A plot infernal, black,
To quench the burning present truth,
And turn deliv’rance back.

Loud rang a shout of babel joy,
Supposing truth had died:
But forth she came, without alloy,
The better, being tried.

We still are joined in Edon’s bond,
Of matrimony true:
While life endures yet indissolved,
It binds my heart to you.

No court of man, nor satan’s power
Can disannul the tie:
Though spirits rent, in evil hour,
“One flesh,” are you and I.

No face so fair, no heart so warm,
Upon this verdant sod,
Shall alienate with rival charm
The wife received of God.

So I will walk with God alone,
And bless His holy name,
Till He shall bring the alien home
To dwell in love again.

Here I will close my present rhyme,
But ever pray for you,
That God may give you back again,
The heart of woman true.

Then touched by sweet seraphic strains,
With all the Heav’nly throng
I’ll shout aloud my Savior’s praise.
And sing another song.

Dear Brethren: This morning finds us rejoicing in God the Rock of our salvation. We have glorious meetings and the work of the Lord moves on. Last Sunday was a day of rejoicing with the saints of Gratiot. We met at the river, and Bro. Reeves baptized 26; last March he baptized 9, making 35 the result of the labor Of Bro. Smith. May God keep every one of them. Your Bro. and sister saved in Jesus.

THE SAINTS REFUGE.

—:o:—

THE persecuted and pursued have ever sought for places of refuge from the fury of their enemies. Cities of refuge were appointed of old, whither the man-slayer might flee from the avenger of blood. A refuge should be accessible, to the pursued, and secure from assault. Praise God! there is no refuge so near, so strong, so accessible, so secure, as the refuge of the saints of God. “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” – Deut. 33:27. The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, in times of trouble. — Psa. 9:9, also 46:1. Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, a City of the great King. God is known in Her palaces for a refuge. — Psa. 48:2, 3. The only way to get into this City of refuge, is to get into Christ, for He is the way, the truth and the life. — John 14:6. “He that climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.” Praise God! there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life. — Rev. 21:27. Praise God! all the pure in heart dwell in this City of refuge, which is New Jerusalem. And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it,  — Rev. 21:24. And the City had no need of the Sun neither of the Moon, to shine in it, for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. — Rev. 21:23. Praise God! this City is accessible at all times, and the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day, for there shall be no night there. — Rev. 21:25; 22:3. Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right, to the Tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the City. For without are dogs, and socerers, and whore mungers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. — Rev. 22:14, 15. As we look priet.. of the hal.. old multitudes that pre… … … by, who have never ..ng him,         … the door; in fact they never came near the door-way, but are trusting in a refuge of lies; such as creeds and commandments of carnal men. But all such refuges will perish beneath the storm of God’s divine wrath when He cometh in flaming fire, taking vengence on them that know not God, and obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Thess. 1:5. The Lord is the hope, the trust, the refuge of His people. When other refuges fail, He faileth not. When other refuges are far away, He is nigh at hand, “a very present help in every time of need.

I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would Know me; refuge failed me, no man cared for my soul. I cried unto the Lord: I said, Thou art my refuge, my portion in the land of the living. — Psa. 142:4, 5. Earthly refuges are vain; refuges of lies will perish. They only are safe whose refuge is in God, who have made the Lord their hiding place, “and have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us; which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast and which entereth into that within the veil.”

Praise God! this City of refuge is my present and eternal abiding place. Amen!

SANCTIFICATION, NOT OBTAINED BY GROWTH.

-:o:-

ONE of the worst, and most deceptive doctrines of the devil taught by carnal ungodly preachers, who keep the people in heathen blindness, is, that entire sanctification is attained by growth. It is far easyer for carnal men and women to believe the carnal preacher than to believe the truth of the Spirit and Word. But says the Apostle, “They, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.” “But we dare not make ourselves of the number, or boast, of the things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach unto you.” Therefore if we, as the ministers of God speak, we must speak as “the oracles of God” It matters not what oar opinion may be, this will not be acceptable to the great Judge, in the dreadful “day of His wrath.” Our experience must accord with the Spiritual import of the Word of God.

Who are the children of God? “He that heareth the Word of God, and does it.” Those who oppose the doctrine of entire sanctification as a distinct work of grace, wrought upon believers after justification, tells us they obtained sanctification when they were born of God. But should you examine them in reference to their consecration, they will soon begin to manifest carnality, and but few Bible questions are necessary in order to produce those manifestations to a foaming degree. Should you ask them if the Holy Scriptures did not teach that believers should go on unto perfection, they would reply in the affirm.. ..r that it did. But they will imme… … ..e the truth of … … … … … my make as many … … … … have previously declared … they obtained it in the new birth; in their confusion they say they are going to glow into it, step by step, according to their own works. Let us put the question; 1. What is entire sanctification? 2 How is it obtained? Now we shall give a Bible answer to these questions, so that they who read may understand, for the wise shall shine, when illuminated by the Sanctifier of their souls. We testily boldly in the face of all men, and the Lord Jesus Christ, that entire sanctification is entire heart purity, not relative purity, but absolute purity, “even as He is pure.”

But carnal preachers say the Bible does not teach entire sanctification. What then does it teach? does it teach “the very God of peace sanctify you (partly) or wholly?” The Scriptures use the word “wholly,” which means entirely. Yet these growling beasts are snarling and howling around, crying out, “God never does His work by halves.” No one, if they will stop to reason, can fail to discern their ungodly confusion, and the shallowness of their silly arguments, for no two points agree together, and hot one with the Scriptures. They are going to grow into it, for God does it not by halves, but by small parcels. They say first, “God does it all at once,” next they are going to grow into it, thus declaring He does it by small parcels, according to their own pharisaical works of righteousness. O shame on such shameful confusion, and insults to the God of Heaven!

Such preachers would make better ox drivers, than Shepherds. Since the Scriptures teach the purification of the soul, body and spirit, how can it he obtained by growth? “Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? Can a man make himself pure? If so, then can ye obtain it upon your own merits, and works. How readest thou? Let us appeal to the Word of God. Are we saved by growth, or by works? No.

“But after that the kindness and love of God our Savior toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which He shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior.” — Titus 3:4, 5, 6.

“Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began;” — 2 Tim. 1:9.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Eph. 2:8, 9.

“Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on Him justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.” — Rom. 4:4, 5.

“Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the faith.” — Rom. 3:27.

Growth is attained by ..rks but not salvation. Those wit.. … salvation through any other source … be blood of Christ, can never attained …. The poor blind pharisee who entered … the temple with the poor publican, sought to be justified by his works. He ren..ded the Lord of all of his good deeds as to supposed, he had fasted twice a week, and gave tithes of all that he possessed. I suppose he, like the latter day pharisee … thought the Lord ought to cause him to expand enormously, because of his ..t..cous works. But should the Lord have heard a prayer like the publicans from husband from any other poor deluded phar.. who are inflated with their own … righteousness, instead of a growth o.. ansion, there would be a sudden colla.. resembling the bursting of a bladder fi.. ..ith gass. Surely there would be nothing ..eft to grow, until the grace of God was planted within.

Old pharisees are like … old bottles which cannot hold new w.. they cannot be used unless they are made pliable by the blood. Entire sanctification, I repeat again, is entire heart purity wrought by the blood of Christ threng.. Eternal Spirit, for proof of which we refer the reader to the following Scriptures. “Every branch in me that beareth not fruit He taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, He purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.” – John l5:2. “Purge out therefore the of that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us.” – 1 Cor. 5:7.

If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the Master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.” — 2 Tim. 2:21

“For it the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh; How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God. — Heb. 9:13, 14.

“For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshipers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.” — Heb. 10:2.

“Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from, all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous, of good works.” — Titus 2:14.

“Not by works of righteousness tbat we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which He shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our savior.” — Titus 3:5, 6.

“And God which knoweth the hearts, bear them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as He did unto us; And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.” – Acts 15:8, 9.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double-minded.” – James 4:7, 8.

“Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Chrst, as of a lamb, without blemish and without spot. Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently.” — 1 Peter 1:18, 19, 22

“Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” — 2 Cor. 7:1.

“But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, cleanseth us from all sin. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” – 1 Jno 1:7, 9.

“Wherefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered without the gate. Now the God of peace, that brought again from, the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the Everlasting Covenant. Make you perfect in every good work to do His will, working in you that which is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.” – Heb. 13:12, 20, 21.

Thus the Scripture use the words, purge, cleanse, purify, to set forth the manner through which the soul is sanctified.

These words all mean the same thing, which is a subtracting, or removing of all elements contrary to the cements of the Holy Spirit. Growth is just the opposite, which can only be illustrated by addition or adding to. But it is strictly a subtracting or purging out, of the old leaven that we may be a new lump. We cannot grow out the old leaven of the malice of wickedness, but the blood and fire of the Holy Spirit will purge it out. First we are cleansed from all our sins and guilt, Second from the unrighteous nature which caused us to commit those sins. Hence the sanctifier, the Holy Spirit purges out the adamic nature, delivering us from all “fleshly lusts which war against the soul.” We are then “made partakers of the Divine nature,” brought back to man’s primeval purity, if we are not redeemed from the effect of the fall of man, we have not a full salvation, for salvation means deliverance from all sin, both committed and inherited. Some say sanctification is simply to be set apart.

Well let us see who sets us apart. We are commanded to come out from among all unbelievers and worldlings. — 2 Cor. 6th chapter; but how are we separated from all these? The first verse of the 7th chapter tells us how we are separated, or set apart. Let us cleanse ourselves from all FILTHINESS of the FLESH and SPIRIT, PERFECTING HOLINESS in the fear of the Lord.

What is the effect of the cleansing? It perfects holiness, and that sets us apart.

The apostle Paul says — 1 Thess. 5:23, 24. The very God of peace sanctify you wholly, and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is He that calleth you, who also will do it. Here again we see sanctification makes the spirit, soul, and body blameless.

The apostle St. Peter says; the Lord put no difference between them and the Gentiles, “giving them the Holy Ghost, even as He did us, Purifying their hearts by faith.” And St. Paul said, “The offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, we do h.. … the Ho1y Ghost by degrees; nor by growth, but instantaneously, as received at Pentecost. How can I be sanctified? you may ask. The only way you can be sanctified is, you must yield all up to God, quit all claim upon yourself, and this world, make a death-bed consecration, surrendering all up that you can not take into Heaven with you, die the death to sin, bid friends all farewell, willing rather that they should turn against you, than you from Christ, suffer the crucifixion of self; that soul, body, and spirit may he saved. The Holy Spirit will then cleaese, and witness to your sanctification.

“I beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service; and be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and perfect and acceptable will of God. — Rom. 12:1, 2. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification. — 1 Thess. 4:3. Sanctification is a transformation wrought, by the Spirit, which cannot in any other way be affected, only by purging out all the unholy, unrighteous elements, so that your fruit shall be unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. Thus saith the Lord, “I will save you from all your filthiness, and from all your idols will I cleanse you.”

AN APPEAL.

We wish to make an appeal to the be loved saints of God in behalf of dear Bro. Wm. N. Smith who has had the missfortune to loose his horse, which was his only means of travel. Dear Bro. and sister Smith have been seeking out the lost ones in the dark places, and in the inland towns where there is no rail roads, and many souls have been reached and brought to God; who otherwise would doubtless have remained in sin. Bro. Smith feels that the Lord wants him to continue to travel in this way, and believes the Lord will put it in the hearts of the saints to send a little of their means to help him to get another horse. May God help you Brethren to all do your duty and come at once to the help of this Bro. who is thus left helpless, and not able to reach perishing souls. Any one desiring to help the Bro. and thus glorify God, please do so by sending your donations to the Gospel Trumpet Office. — … the same will be forwarded to him.

REVELATIONS SEVENTEENTH.

—:o:—

“AND there came one of the seven, angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will show unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters;” — Vr. 1.

The seven angels having the seven vials, are the true ministers of Christ, who now pour out the vials of God’s wrath upon the sectish, babylon cages of deception full of every unclean and hateful bird. Seven means completeness, or fulness, the flying ministry of Jesus Christ that finishes up the Gospel ministration. The seven vials are the burning rebukes, the hail, fire and blood, the “wormwood and water of gall,” upon all sect idolaters, namely the truth of God, which “roots up, pulls down, and destroys” all the sect machinery that satan has made, and run, for tlie deception and destruction of souls. These seven vials contain the “seven last plagues.” — 21: 9. As seven fills up the complete number, so these vials finish up the rebukes of God upon the workers of iniquity, and builders of the false systems of men. Their result is the complete separation of all dross from the Church, and then the Lord comes to receive His pure bride arrayed in “fine linen, clean and white, which is the righteousness of the saints.”

“The great whore” is the false, apostate and wicked, counterfeit church. “The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.” — verse 15.

“The judgment of the great whore,” is the pouring out upon her these vials of God’s wrath.” — “But truly lam full of power by the Spirit of the Lord, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin.” — Micah 3:8.

“Arise and thresh, O daughter of Zion; for I will make thy horn iron, and I will make thy hoofs brass: and thou shalt beat in pieces many people: and J will consecrate their gain unto the Lore, and their substance unto the Lord of the whole earth.” — Micah 4:13.

“For behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring the captivity of Judah and Jarusalem, ver 2. Proclai.. … … ..entiles pr.. … … … … … … … draw near; let them come up.. … … plow-shares into swords, and your pr.. hooks into spears : let the weak say, I am strong. Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.” — Joel 3:1, 2, 9, 10, 12. Isa. 41:15, 16.

“For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; The daughter of babylon is like a threshing-floor, it is time to thresh her: yet a little while and the time of her harvest shall come.” — Jer. 51:33.

“For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the Gospel of God?” — 1 Peter 4:17.

It is the preaching of the faithful Word of God which sits in judgment upon all the sectarian creeds of men, and cuts off everything not of God.

“With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drank with the wine of her fornication.” — Vr. 2.

Her fornication is her amalgamation, and compromise with the world, and her conformity thereto. As James says, “O ye adulterers, and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity against God. Therefore if any man will be a friend of the world, he is an enemy of God.” The friendship of professors of Christ with the world, is spiritual fornication. And this fornication has intoxicated and corrupted the whole earth. It has made the inhabitants of the earth drunk, spiritually stupid and devilish, and beyond the reach of the Holy Spirit.

“So he carried me away in the spirit, into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.” — Vr. 3.

The false church is found in the wilderness, which means the mixed state. Egypt represents the non-professing sinners, Canaan, the wholly sanctified, and the wilderness, all the mixed, carnal elements that lay between no profession, and perfect holiness. Sincere children of God must pass through this wilderness, but If really upright in heart, they will press through as soon as possible to perfect holiness. And all that willingly stay there are corrupted children of wilderness confusion, and are of the harlot woman.

“And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet color, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand, full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication.” — Vr.4.

The purple and scarlet colors, gold, precious stones, and pearls with which the woman was arrayed, is fulfilled in the flashy, gaudy pride, and jeweled style of the great masses of sect members.

The golden cup in her hand, may refer to the Word of God, which is present on all her pulpits, but they “corrupt the Word” so as to draw license from it for all manner of abominable works of the devil, which they practice in their filthy cages.

“And upon her fore-head was a name written, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.” — Vr. 5.

Here is the brand mark that God has put upon the great harlot, He calls things by their right names. How silly and rediculous the assertion, that babylon means the ancient city, or spiritually, the world, as some babylon defenders say.

She is a mystical, and not a literal city. She is a woman, a system, a “whore,” and a “mother of harlots.” She is not the inhabitants of the earth, but by her “the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk.” “And the woman which thou sawest is that great city which reigneth over” the kings of the earth.” — Vr. 18.

What city? Ans. Babylon. Literal babylon? No. “Mystery Babylon.” What mystery? Ans. “The mystery of iniquity.” – 2 Thess. 2; T. This woman is the. abomination of the whole earth. It is the ecclesiasticisms of Rome, and all protestantism.

“And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.” — verse 6.

All humanly formed religions have been persecuting powers. Nothing so arouses the zeal, and energy, and desperation of man, as that which touches his religion. Man was created to worship God So the element of religion is the strongest ele..hic natural and moral constitn.. ..hen his religious powers are … … … … … ..arries with if much of that ..ch inflames men to a desparation that will even take the life of fellow men. Thus it is that all the persecution and martyrdom in the world, has been wrought by the devotees of false religion. And all the creeds and religions outside of God, and the truth makes up mystery babylon.

“And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of she world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.” — Verses 7, 8.

“The beast that carried her.” The Lord Jesus carries His Church in the arms of His mighty power. But He does not carry any of the systems that men have formed. All humanly founded, so called churches must look to some other power to carry them. The beast comes forth from the bottomless pit and carries them.

This “beast was, and is not, and yet is.” These words were a great mystery to us until the Lord revealed the meaning, by His Spirit. The woman is Romanism, and Protestantism, whatever carries, supports, and gives authority to these, is the beast. What gave power and authority to Rome? Ans. civil power, force of arms. In that sense the beast was, and is not. Rome has lost her political power. “And yet is.” Namely, she still controles her subjects at will. They all bow to her rule just as perfectly as when she was backed by a large. army. So the beast that bears the unclean woman “yet is.” At first the beast was political power, and superstitious sect devotion. Now it continues in the latter form. Then it was both political and ecclesiastical government, now it is the latter only. Thus it “was, and is not, and yet is.” It is a government distinct from that of God in the hearts of His people. A standard of duty different from that of the Word and Spirit of God. But how do they secure loyalty to a government not backed by the voice of God? By influencing a superstitious, idolatrous

ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS.

—:o:—

MR. Berry, whose questions we recently answered in the Trumpet, tries again to make a defence of babylon confusion, by offering the following questions.

1st. “Is it right or wrong to entertain opinions, principles, or doctrines on religious subjects?” Ans, Sinners who know not God nor His truth, have plenty speculations, and opinions about religion. But Christians “know the truth.”

“Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.” — 1 Cor. 1:10.

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” — John 8:32.

“Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come.” — John 16:13.

The whole Christian system is represented by the truth, “For the law came by Moses, but grace and truth by the Lord Jesus Christ.” And “ye shall know the truth.” So opinions about the doctrine of Christ, only belong to sinners, and blind creed-bound formalists, but the saved in Jesus know the truth.

2nd. “If right, are we anywhere in the Bible required to hold exactly the same opinions or principles of any body else?”

Ans. No, we are not commanded to have the same opinions; for opinions amount to nothing. It is only a man’s blind guess. But Christians know the truth. If, however, we give sentiment, as the definition of opinion, Christians hold sentiments, but the Word of God forbids differences in sentiment or judgment. “That ye all speak the same things, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and the same judgment.” — 1 Cor. 1:10. The Emphatic Diaglott renders the last word sentiment. So differences of sentiment and doctrine among professed Christians are an abomination in the sight of God. They are proofs of carnality. Holiness sweeps away all differences, contentions, wrangling, jangling and bones of contentio.. … ..en shall lift up the voice, with the voice togather shall they sing; for they shall see eye to eye, when the Lord shall bring again Zion” — namely, back again from babylon to the Church of the First-born, which is written in Heaven. — Isa. 52:8. See the whole chapter. Now it is evident that when the watchmen see eye to eye, i,e., have the same mind, the same judgment and the same doctrine, then the people taught by them will be equally uniform. For “so we preach, and so ye believe,” saith the Apostle. So when preachers preach the same things, the people believe the same things. But how can all preachers see alike? All preachers cannot see alike, but all of God’s preachers can; because they are all “filled with the Holy Spirit and speak as the Spirit gives them utterance.” They “preach the Gospel with the Holy Spirit sent down from Heaven;” and there is no discord in the Spirit of God. He is the same treasure in every earthen vessel, and speaks the same thing through every mouth-piece that He uses. So a plea for different doctrines is simply an apology for a profession of Christ without the Spirit of Christ. In other words, to take on the name of Christ and remain carnal. For when men want to clan off under different names, creeds, doctrines and opinions, if is evidence that they “are yet carnal, and walk as men.”

We pass questions 3 and 4, as sufficiently answered in our above remarks, and what follows on other questions.

5th. “If a number of these Christians happen to believe alike, is it wrong for them to worship in a body according to their honest views?”

This same argument for the jargon babylon confusion of the devil was demolished in our other article, but here it is served up again. We answer, the whole world happens to be involved in sin, “each one gone astray in his own way;” but can they worship God therein? No, “God is a Spirit, and they that worship Him, must worship Him in Spirit and in truth.” In “one body and one Spirit.” — Eph. 4. But our babel defendor talks about Christians happening to have a great variety of views, and pleads their right to form themselves into numerous bodies, bounded by these doctrinal differences. This is utter ignorance of what a Christian is, and what the Bible teaches. A Christian is a Christ man. One who has received Christ, “the way, the life, and the truth.” Christ is only one way, and all Christians are in one way. Christians live by the life of Christ, think by the mind of Christ. “For we have the mind of Christ.” They walk by God walking in them, “As God hath said, I will live in you and walk in you.” Christians have all forsaken their ways, and are in God’s one way, knowing the truth by the Holy Spirit; for the Spirit of God guides us into all truth. So a man is not a Christian, nor a worshiper of God, simply because he holds some opinions respecting the doctrine of Christ. Again he claims a right for each class of opinionists to form a distinct body, and therein worship God, and all these disintegrated bodies of men, he calls Christians. Well Paul says that “our bodies are the members of Christ,” i.e., our physical bodies.

Again, “we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones,” and “we are the body of Christ and members in in particular.” “For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.” — Eph. 5: 30. 1 Cor. 12:12. These Scriptures identify Christians with Christ Himself. Then it follows that if Christians are divided info different bodies, so is Christ divided. You cannot have divisions among Christians, without the rediculous representation of a divided Christ. So when divisions began to develop at Corinth, the Apostle showed their abomination, and absurdity by asking the question, “Is Christ divided?” Again, it is evident that Christians are all in Christ, and our sect apologist claims the right for every different class of professed christian, opinion holders, to constitute a separate body. Then there would be many bodies in Christ Jesus. But what saith the Word of God?

“For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members, one of another.” — Rom. 12:4, 5.

How many bodies are there in Christ? “One body in Christ.” There being but one body in Christ, there is but one body of Christians. So Mr. Berry’s marry bodies of worshipers, based on dogmatical creeds must all take their place outside of Christ. You may make as many opinion-bound bodies as you please outside of Christ, but if you will enter Christ, you must be of one body, for there is only one body in Christ. So all bodies formed on a mere adoption of the same doctrine, are rivals of Christ, and confuse and confound the minds of men. When Mr. Berry, or any one else, pleads for the right of men to form themselves “together in different bodies, based on honest differences,” he virtually says that honest, sincere men cannot see the Word of God in the same light: which is equivalent to saying that the Bible is an obscure and unknowable volume. A vague, mystical book, which men can only guess at, and which every body is at liberty to enter, as men enter a dry-goods store, and select such articles as suit their fancy, make them up in a parsel, and carry them away to use as they may see fit, leaving the rest for others to pick out their budget full of such things as they like. It says you can not know the truth, the whole truth as it is in Christ Jesus, and have to guess at a part of it, and make it your creed, and others guess out another part and make it their creed. This is an insult and abomination to God, a lie and slander upon His Word. The devil himself could not put the Bible in a more false and disgusting light. The Bible is not something for men to guess at, nor is it designed for people to take each a part, and therefrom tinker up a creed with such additions as each shall choose. No, the Bible is a revelation from God to man. Not from God to a point just above our comprehension, so that each must reach up with a pole of theological speculation, and punch down a part, and then guess at its meaning, and worship God according to your class of opinions. No, all holy men know the truth, and the truth makes them free. The Spirit of God “guides them into all truth.” Therefore we admonish Mr. Berry and all other opinion mongrels to “Be hot unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” Not a part of it, but all. “For man shall not like by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” 6th. If their views are Scriptural, is it wrong in them to join in their worship according to their views.”

This is the came babylon confusion over again. To the question we answer emphatically, Yes. It is wrong to pretend to worship God on a line of mere views or opinions. “They that worship God, must worship Him in Spirit and in truth.” Until men receive the Spirit of God, they cannot worship Him. But when He comes to the heart He lifts men above the plain of “views,” to the knowledge of the truth.

7th. “If so, how are they to worship?” But God says not so, that ends that matter.

8th. “Have not you and your associates different views of what is Scriptural. And do you not assemble together, and worship in accordance with such views?”

No. We do not stand on views and opinions, we are saved by the blood of Jesus, ..sess the Spirit of God, and know the truth, and therefore worship God in Spirit and in truth.

9th.  ..so, how do you differ from other sects?”

But it is not so, and herein God’s Church differs from all sects.

Then follows quibblings and questions, about sects etc., which our former article very plainly answered, and we have not space to go over again, nor think it proper to do so.

Mr. Berry also informs us that he is not a member of any sect, and thinks he is therefore able to view this matter impartialy. But he might as well be in a sect, as drunk on the wine of sectism. He exhibits the same blindness other sect devotees do, and is no better for not being in any one of the opinionated pens.

He blindly accuses us of sectarianism because we “cry babylon loudest,” and are “intolerant.” We would just call his attention to the Word of God. “Saying with aloud I voice, fear God, and give glory to Him; for the honor of His judgment is come * * *. And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen.” — Rev. 14:7, 8.

“And after these things I saw another angel come down from Heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of ..vils, and the hold of every foul spirit, … a tage of every … and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have waxen rich through the abundance of her delicacies. And I heard another voice from Heaven saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.” — Rev. 18: 1-4.

If our loud cry against babylon proves us sectarian, it equally proves Heaven sectarian, for from heaven there thunders, a loud voice against her, and calls to all God’s people to come out of her. Thank God!

We have heard the angel’s call, And escaped the sure destruction That is written on the wall.

He says we are intolerant. So is God intolerant. A whirlwind is gone forth from the presence of the Lord. Just now Jesus is riding on a white horse at the head of His white horse cavalry, smiting the nations with a rod of iron, and from His eyes proceed a flame of fire which sweeps away the works of night. Intolerant persecution for the protection of old babylon creeds, is the spirit of the devil. But Holy Spirit fire, intolerance is the order of God, Paul said — Gal. 2:18, “If I build again the things I destroyed I make myself a transgressor.” So Paul was a destroyer or everything before him that was opposite to the truth of God in Christ Jesus. Neither the Father, Son, nor Holy Spirit, nor any holy man of God, will tolerate anything that is of the devil, and that dishonors God. Christ commended the Church at Ephesus because they “hated the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which He also hated.” But rebuked the Church of God at Tiryatira because they “suffered — tolerated — that woman Jezebel to teach and seduce.” Thus Christ reproves tolerance, and commands intolerance. “Let the saints be joyful in glory. Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged Sword in their hand.” — Psa. 149.

“And he that overcometh and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers.” — Rev. 2:26, 27.

Sectarians have no authority by the Holy Spirit, therefore think it intolerance when men are “filled with power by the Spirit, of the Lord, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgressions, and unto Israel his sins.” — Micah 3:8.

Daniel.

OTHER CONFESSORS; ALSO VALENTINA AND PAULUS.

-:o:-

WHEN the storm had incessantly raged rgainst us into the sixth year, there had been before this a vast number of confessors of true religion in what is called the Prophyry quarry, from the name of the stone which is found in Thebais. Of these, one hundred, wanting three, men, women, and young infants, were sent to the governor of Palestine, who, for confessing the Supreme God and Christ, had the ancles and sinews of their left legs seared off with a red hot iron. Besides this they had their right eyes first cut out, together with the lids and pupils, and then seared with red hot iron, so as to destroy the eye to the very roots. All this was done by the order of Firmilianus, who was sent thither as successor to Urbanus, and acted in obedience to the imperial command. After this he committed them to the mines in Palestine, to drag out a miserable existance in constant toil and oppressive labor.

Nor was it enough that those who endured such miseries were deprived of their eyes, but those natives of Palestine, also, whom we have already mentioned as condemned to pugilistic combats, as they neither would suffer themselves to be supported from the imperial treasury, nor undergo the exercises preparatory to the combat, hence they were now brought, not only before the governors, but before Maximinus himself, where, displaying the noblest firmness in their confessions, by enduring hunger and stripes, they suffered finally the same that the former did, with the addition of other confessors from the same city. Immediately after these others were seized, who had assembled in the city of Gaza to hear the Holy scriptures read, some of whom suffered the same mutilations in their eyes and fea.. … … ..iged to endure … … … ing.. .y having their sides … … scraped in the most dreadi…

Of these, one who was a female in sex, but a man in reason, not enduring the threat of violation, and having used a certain expression against the tyrant, for committing the government to such cruel judges, she was first scourged, then raised on high on the rack, was lacerated and galled in the sides. But as those who were appointed for this, incessantly and vehemently applied the tortures according to the orders of the judge, another woman who like the former, had contemplated a life of perpetual virginity, though ordinary in bodily form, and common in appearance, yet possessing a mind otherwise firm, and an understanding superior to her sex, was unable to bear the merciless, cruel, and inhuman scene before her, and with a courage exceeding all the far-famed combatants among the Greeks for their liberty, she exclaimed against the judge, from the midst of the crowd, “And how long, then, will you thus cruelly torture my sister?” He, the more bitterly incensed by this, ordered the woman immediately to be seized. She was then dragged into the midst, and after she had called herself by the august name of our Savior, attempts were first, made to bring her over to sacrifice by persuasion. But when she refused, she was dragged to the altar by force. But her sister remaining the same, and still adhering to her purpose, with a resolute, intrepid step, she kicked the altar, and overturned all on it, together with the fire. Upon this, the judge exasperated, like a savage beast, applied tortures beyond all that he had done before, all but glutting himself with her very flesh, by the wounds and lacerations of her body. But when his madness was gratified to satiety, he bound her and the former, whom she called sister, tegether, and condemned them to the flames.

The former of these was said to be of Gaza, but the other, Valentina by name, was a native of Cesarea, and well known to many.

But how could I sufficiently describe the martyrdom that followed this, and with which the most blessed Paulus was crowned? Who, indeed, was condemned at the same time with these, under one and the same sentence of death.

About the time of his execution, he … quested of the executioner, who was … the point of cutting off his head, to all.. him a short space of time, which being granted, with a loud and clear voice, … first interceeded with God in his prayer … imploring pardon for his fellow-christia.. and earnestly entreating that peace an.. liberty might be soon granted them.

Then he prayed for the conversion … the Jews to God through Christ. The … he proceeded, in order, imploring th.. same things for the Samaritans, and those Gentiles who were in error and ignorance of God, that they might come to His knowledge, and be led to adopt the true religion, not omitting, or neglecting to include the mixed multitude that stood around. After all these, Oh, the great and inexpressible forbearance! he prayer for the judge that condemned him to death, for the imperial rulers themselves and for him too, that was about to seve.. his head from his body, in the hearing o.. him and all present, supplicating the Supreme God, not to impute to them their sin against Him.

Praying thus, with a loud voice, and moving almost all to compassion and tears as one unjustly slain, yet composing himself, and submitting his bare neck to the stroke of the sword, he was crowned with a divine martyrdom on the twenty-fifth of the month Panemus, which would be the eighth of the calends of August.

And such was the end of these. But after the lapse of no long time, one hundred and thirty other noble wrestlers of the Christian faith, undergoing the same mutilations of eyes and feet with the former in Egypt; some by the order of Maximinus, were condemned and sent away to the mines of Palestine, others to those of Cilicia.

Dear Brethren: — Praise God for His love that I have in my heart, and the sweet trust that I have in Jesus. He is a present help in every time of need. I was reading this morning the 15th and 16th chapters of St John. O how it filled my soul with joy. There we find that Jesus is the Vine, and we are the branches, and … ..s that if we abide in Him, and His … ..ble in us, we shall ask what we … … … done unto us. O praise … ..r the many precious promises … we have in His Word. Again He says that whatsoever we ask the Father in His name He will give it to us. Dear saints let us be dilligent and careful to do the whole will of God and be led by His Spirit. Last Sabbath we attended the ordinance of baptism. It was a grand and glorious day for the saints in this place. There were 25 baptized, and I was one among that number. O praise the Lord for His Holy Spirit to lead us into the ways of all truth. I had been baptized about thirteen years ago by a sect minister in the Christian sect, supposing that to be the Church. I was baptized in good faith, but I have not always walked in the light since that time, and so the Lord showed me that I must be buried with Him in baptism, and show to the world that I renounced all sects. Now I am taking the straight Word of God, and being led by His Spirit. Praise the Lord O my soul, and all that is within me praise His holy name! I am saved and sanctified, doing the will of God as He makes it known to me. Your sister in Christ.

Dearly Beloved Saints of the Most High. Grace be unto you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, “To whom be glory forever and ever!” Amen! As you have not heard from me through the Gospel Trumpet for a long time, I feel it my duty to testify once more to the goodness of God to me. Praise His holy name! I can say He saves my soul just now, and the blood cleanseth me from all unrighteousness. O praise God for the cleansing power that I feel in my soul! Glory to Jesus! I feel the well of living water springing up in my soul while I write. Praise God for a living salvation! I praise God that He keeps me continually. Although I have many trials to pass through, the Lord keeps me in perfect peace, for my mind is “stayed on Him.” And although satan pursues my every step he cannot harm me, for I am hid in a sure refuge which is Christ. I can with the Psalmist say, the Lord is my defence, and my God is my refuge. — Psa. 94:22. O I do praise God for this blessed refuge, in it my soul doth rest secure from all the assaults of the enemy. Amen!

devotion to the sect name and interest. thus the thousands of poor, allow themselves to be taxed and gulled, to support ..n idleness, and affluence, an army of dead, ..roud priests, who give them no value received for the hard earned money they ..avish upon them. The sect name is the principle inspiration, that calls out the ..mmense sums of money, and other sacrifices necessary to carry forward the pondrous machinery of human ecclesiasticisms. When money is wanted, the sect builders have but to cry “great is the Diana of Methodism,” or whatever ism it may be, and at once the purse strings fly open. All other interests are secondary to the devotion to party religion, “Our church,” our name, creed, and order.

What then carries the great apostate whore? Ans, the power of her names. Then the beast upon which she rides, is identical with her names. So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. — Vr. 3.

The impression had been on our mind that it Was the woman that was full of names of blasphemy. But a more careful reading shows that it was the beast that bore the many names. Now when the Spirit wished to show us that the twelve foundations of the City, the Church, were the twelve Apostles, He did so by showing the name of one of the apostles upon each of the foundation.” — Rev. 21:14. So likewise, the Spirit of Revelation informs us that the beast is the sect names, by writing those names upon him. We have seen that the sect name is what carries the sect, therefore is the beast upon which she rides. Well there are hundreds of those names, all of which, make up the beast, and so we see him “full of names of blasphemy.” All the sects, Romish and Protestant make up the woman, i.e., the great city of babylon. For on “her forehead is a name written, mystery babylon.” “And the woman which thou sawest is that great city.” — 17:18. So all the sect names make up the beast upon which the woman rode. The woman and the beast are joined in one power. There was one woman borne by one beast; but the beast had numerous names; as the … the beast included all the sect a.. … woman must include all t.. ..izations that ride on those … … contradistinction to the many name … that carries the harlot, sects, we see the pure remnant and bride of Christ, riding upon white horses, in Rev. 19, which denotes holiness. White represents purity, the horse strength and speed. Holiness is perfect purity, speed and power.

Will any one doubt that the names upon the beast are the sect names? All through the New Testament God’s Church is represented as the Wife of Jesus. Therefore all that profess Christ, and are yet in friendship with the world, are charged with spiritual adultery. According to Bible language they have “gone a whoring” after the world. Now does not this exactly agree with the names of the sects of these last days? Do they not conform to the world, please the world, entertain the world, and draw their support from the world? Do they not then exactly answer the description of the vile woman of this chapter? And is she not divided under several hundred names? Where under the Heavens is there a system that could be a beast full of names, but the multiplicity of sects, of corrupt Romanism and Protestantism. They call themselves denominations. The word denomination, means to name. So they are just a mass of confused names, names to live, while yet dead.

Upon the woman’s forhead is a name written, mystery babylon, the mother of harlots.” Now here is a mother and a host of daughters, all included in one woman, one false church. Rome has but one name, but the beast upon which this woman sat, was “full of names,” includes all the sects. They themselves call each-other “sister denominations,” showing that they have a common mother, and fulfilling the Word of God. The mother of sects is not simply Rome, but sect. It takes sect to breed sects. All these daughters have brought forth other daughters, as soon as they became old enough; and these in turn have brought forth still others. Thus the whole system may be called the mother, or breeder of harlots. And the devil is the father of the whole generation of harlots, and of the mother of harlots.

The word babylon, means confusion. If the several hundred sects, with their confused creeds, rival altars, rival steeples, separate interests, jealous spirits, and clamoring proselyte-ism; and yet claiming all to represent the one Christ, one body, one Spirit, one Bible, and one cause. If the jargon of these sect tongues, do not constitute confusion, then the pandemoniums of hell, never devised anything that deserves the name of confusion.

But let us come right to the point. Are the names of the different sects, “Names of blasphemy?” If so, then it is settled that they are the very names upon this beast, for such they are called. To blaspheme is to speak impiously; to ascribe to the creature that which is the atribute of the Creator only. When the council of Rome proclaimed the dogma of the Pope’s infallibility, they uttered an impious blasphemy, because they ascribed to man, a vile sinner at that, the prerogative and exclusive attribute of God. Well we open the Volume of Inspiration, and read about an institution called the Church.

Whence came it? Its full title indicates its origin. “The Church of God.” It is then of God, and not the product of any creature. The history of its formation uniformly ascribe its origin to God. “He that buildeth all things (in this Church) is God.” “It hath foundations, and whose builder and maker is God.” “Upon this foundation I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

Again we are surrounded by a multitude of organized bodies, which also call themselves churches. We open the pages of history and each one is traced to some man as its founder. So the assumption that these bodies are also churches, is blasphemy in the sight of God; ascribing to man, the creature, the founding of the Church, which the Bible ascribes only to God. So every sect name, being the name of a man-made church, falsely, so called, is a name of blasphemy.

Of course it did not make the Pope infallible to so announce him, yet the announcement was blasphemy, ascribing to man, that which belongs only to God. So the calling the sects churches, does not make them the Church, but is only another act of blasphemy, making sect founders equal with God, who only hath found… built the Church. Nothing else, … … the descripti.. the … … ..ay on life beast, … the … … of the sect, … … ….

We cannot take space to notice other verses.

THE FALL OF BABYLON.

—:o:—

THE following article written over two years ago by Bishop R. S. Rosher, and published in the Methodist Exchange, and republished in the Banner of Holiness and other papers, clearly shows the fulfillment of the prophetic fall of babylon … Nearly every body knows that such a ..ll has taken place in Methodism, and other sects, where you live, but many imagine he fall of babylon only local, and not so had elsewhere. This will show you that … is general. Forster is the oldest Bishop of the M. E. sect, and the author of ..ook on holiness. A year later he w..s from England back to the American Express, an article in which he said, “Th.. ..pous empty fraud cannot last … ..ding to the sects in general, and his own … particular. The following article speaks for itself.

“THE STATE OF THE CHURCH.

-:o:-

BY BISHOP R. S. FOSTER.

The (professed) church of God is to day courting the world. Its members are trying to bring it down to the fever of the ungodly. The ball, the the theater, nude and lewd art, social luxuries, with their loose moralities, are making inroads into the sacred inclosure of the church, and as a satisfaction for all this worldliness Christians are making a great deal of Lent, and Easter, and Good Friday, and church ornamentations. It is the old tricl of satan.

The Jewish church struck o.. that rock, the Romish church was wrecked on the same, and the Protestant ..o.. ..cl.. is fast reaching the same doom. Our great dangers, as we see them, are assimilation to the world, neglect of the po..bstitution of the form for the fact of godliness, abandonment of discipline, a hi..g. ministry, an impure gospel, which summed up are a fashionable church. That Methodists should be liable to such an ..u..come, and that there should be signs of it in a hundred years from the “sail loft, seems almost, the miracle of history; but who that looks about him to-day can fail to see the fact?

Do not Methodists, in vioi..on of God’s Word and their disipline … ..s extravagantly and as fashiont … any other …. Do not the ladies, and often the wives and daughters of the ministry, put on “gold, pearls and co..rly ..ray?” Would not the plain dress insisted upon by John Wesley, Bishop Asbury, and worn by Hester Ann Rogers, Lady Huntington, and many others equally distinguished, be now regarded in Methodist circles as fanaticism? Can any one going into a Methodist church in any of our chief cities, distinguish the attire of the communicants from that of the theater and ball goers? Is not worldiness seen in the music? Elaborately dressed and ornamented choirs who in many cases make no profession of religion, and are often sneering skeptics, go through a cold, artistic, or operatic performance, which is as much in harmony with spiritual worship as an opera or theater. Under such worldly performances spirituality is frozen to death.

Formerly every Methodist attended class, and gave testimony of experimental religion. Now, the class-meeting is attended by a few, and in many churches abandoned. Seldom the stewards, trustees, and leaders of the church attend class. Formerly nearly every Methodist prayed, testified, or exhorted in prayer-meeting. Now, but very few are heard. Formerly shouts and praises were heard; now such demonstrations of holy enthusiasm and joy are regarded as fanaticism. Worldly socials, fairs, festivals, conce.., and such like have taken the place of religious gatherings, revival meeting class and prayer meetings of earlier days. How true that the Methodist discipline is a dead letter. Its rules forbid the wearing of gold, or pearls, or costly array. Yet no one ever thinks of disciplining its members for violating them. They forbid the reading of such books and taking of such diversions as do not minister to godliness, yet the church itself goes into shows and frolics and festivals and fair.. which destroy the spiritual life of the young as well as the old. The extent to which this is now carried on is appalling. The spiritual death it carries in its train will only be known when the millions is it has swept into hell stand before the judgement.

The early Methodist ministers went forth to sacrifice and suffer for Christ. They sought not the place of ease and affluence, but of privation and suffering. They gloried not in their big salaries, fine parsonages, and refined congregations, but in the souls that had been won for Jesus. O, how changed! A hireling ministry will be a feeble, a timid, a truckling, a time-serving ministry without faith, endurance, and holy power. Methodism formerly dealt in the great central truth. Now the pulpits deal largely in generalities and in popular lectures. The glorious doctrine of entire sanctification is rarely heard and seldom witnessed to in the pulpits.”

Methodist Exchange.

It is well the Bishop qualified his first sentence by saying, “The (professed) church of God.” For what he says would not apply to the actual Church of God at all. She never has courted the world She is a Heavenly Jerusalem, and can have no affinity with the world at all. The Church of God can no more court the world, than Christ and the devil can court each-other, with a view to a matrimonial bond. The devil is the god of this world, and the church is the body of Christ. So the Church and the world are just as far apart as Christ and the devil are. Is it possible that two can court each-other, where there is not the slightest affinity?

No. Bishop Forster’s (“professed) church of God,” is not the Church of God at all. But that “pompous empty fraud,” If she did not assume the name of the Church, she would not be a “fraud,” an impious counterfeit, and soul deceiving spare. But there is still a mistake in his language. The sects are not courting the world today. The Bishop’s article clearly shows the courtship has passed by long ago, and the marriage has already taken place. And “the ball, the theater, nude and lewd art, social luxuries,” “worldly socials, fairs, festivals, concerts,” and “shows and frolics,” of which the Bishop speaks, as characteristic of present day Methodism, are the nuptail feasts, of the marriage of the world, the flesh, and the devil, to the M. E. sect and babylon in general.

The Bishop is confounded and amazed that Methodism should become such a corrupt brothel in one hundred years. This fulfills the words of Rev. 17:6, “And when I saw her, I wondered with great wonder.” But considering that rotten, murderous Rome, is the root from which this, and all other sect branches, have shot, forth, what else could be expected. If the root be unholy, so are also the branches.

“The Protestant church is fast reaching the same doom.” Yes, all babylon is doomed to destruction; but nothing but purity, triumph, and eternal glory awaits the Church of God.

The M. E. “discipline is a dead letter.” Yes and even the Word and Spirit of God are but corpse lying in the streets of the great city called Sodom and Egypt, where our Lord was crucified. The city of all sects, where spirituality is frozen to death.” Bishop Foster puts the religion of Methodism on a plain with the “opera or theater.” And says her “shows and frolics festivals and fairs” have “swept millions into hell.” Surely this is a very grave matter. Millions of souls gone to hell to gratify the M. E. sect in her pride and frolic. Then Methodism is simply one of the devil’s biggest concealed pitfalls into hell. Should not every honest man and woman raise a shout of alarm, and warn all men to flee out of such a hellish dead fall? And shall not all who see the dreadful whirlpool of destruction cry aloud, and warn all men to stand afar off from the same? Millions of souls in hell to-day, the fruits of this corrupt frolicing harlot, and her “hireling,” “truckling, time-serving ministry.” No wonder God is feeding these abominable priests of the devil, “wormwood and the water of gall.” O Lord help us to deal it out in large doses, and pull souls out of the fire of her perdition. Amen!

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

—:o:—

THE siege at Walker ton continued. We found the place black with prejudice and sect wine. Over forty souls in that place are joined in a holiness band, professing sanctification, most of whom are connected with sects. We went to their meeting on Tuesday night, before we began operations in the hall. Being held in the U. B. sect house, pastor Snyder of that sect, led the meeting. God powerfully baptized our soul, and we praised Him in prayer and testimony, which made the sect priest grow black in his face. He afterward tried to make out that we had come there and interrupted their meeting, and actually caused a report of that kind to go out. This priest spared no pains to fill the place with all manner of evil against us. Like Alexander the copper-smith, his craft was in danger. The poor dead sepulchre professes holiness, as a proselyting policy, and is so dead that he reads a paper to his people, in stead of preaching the Gospel. He was the instigation of closing the meeting house against the saints near LaPaz, of which we spake in our last. He says he thinks more of the devil than of us, Which we do not doubt in the least, the pharisees of old thought more of there father than they did of Christ. He came to meeting a few times, and took a far back seat; the last time, the Word of God was such “wormwood and water of gall” to him that he took his position standing back among sinners to whom he freequently talked, making confusion about him, as if not sufficiently moralized to properly conduct himself in the house of worship.

But in spite of all the combined powers of hell the work went on; a few souls were converted, others consecrated for entire sanctification. Prejudice was being removed from some hearts, congregations quite large at night. The hall was a choice place to sing, and God wonderfully blessed the holy songs to draw the people. Three sisters received the anointing and laying on of hands for healing. They, with ourselves, claimed the answer of prayer. Sister Moorehead received strength to go to the hall and testify to the healing of her body, shortly after prayer for her at her house.

The M. E. priest delivered a lecture on Monday night, in favor of secret societies, labored especially to make a good character for the Odd Fellows. The Holy Spirit put it upon us to rebuke such agents of the devil, which the class-leader of that sect said made his blood boil.

So he went about the town breathing out his venom against us, and enlisting as many as possible in an effort to induce the pro.. … … ..l to break his contract … … …. They succeeded in so influencing … but the power of God turned his mind right around, and he not only gave the hall cheerfully to the extent of the time, but offered it as much longer as we wanted it, or at any time we might return. So this M. E. class leader being defeated in his plot against the Gospel of Christ, and being full of the “wine of the wrath of her fornication,” tried to gratify his wretched malice in other ways. Base assaults were instigated, against the witnesses of our Lord Jesus. Vile cowards were employed by viler baalits to make an assult on us in the dark. But the hand of the Lord protected His children from all harm. O how the glory of God filled our souls. Hallelujah! If satan but knew how his wicked threats, and assaults, but occasion the richer blessings of God on our soul, he would not so freely volunteer to bring “the Spirit of glory and of God” upon our souls. Oh the sweet love and glory of God that filled our hearts amidst satan’s malicious assaults. Glory to Jesus! Well praise God! the effect of the babylon abuse, was, it raised up many friends for the truth. Thus God “makes the wrath of men praise Him, and the remainder of wrath He restrains.” O glory to His holy name! We left the place after two weeks preaching, with much truth sown in many hearts. A few are clear out on the Bible line, and many have rec.. light they will have to walk in, or be..os… Regular meetings have been started for Friday night and Sabbath. And we ask all God’s dear saints to pray for the glorious blessings of God upon these little ones, and others whom He is calling, to take their stand on the “sea of glass, mingled with fire, having the harps of God.”

Thursday, May 6th we went to Rochester, Fulton Co. Ind. Where we were met by our dear little Sidney, and some of the kind family where God has prepared the dear child a good home. Praise God for the privilege of seeing him once more. Praise God for His blessing of health upon him. The Lord reward Bro. and Sister Ballinger and their kind family, for their labor of love bestowed upon him.

We had some glorious meetings with the saints. The Lord poured His Spirit upon our souls, and we shouted His praise aloud, and rejoiced exceedingly for His great salvation in our souls. Saturday, at 2 o’clock P.m., as the Church has been accustomed, over 30 of the saints met in the school house, and we had a glorious meeting. Thank God for the fire of God’s love that brings together so many worshipers of the true God, even in the midst of cornplanting.

Sabbath we had a glorious meeting again. During these meetings, two of God’s little ones consecrated, and received a glorioug settling in God.

Daniel.
