Ponder it Well.

_____

Weary sinner, just now
While the Spirit voice, low,
Is tenderly pleading with thee;
Turn away from thy sin,
Let the gentle one in,
Great gladness he’ll give unto thee.

Precious soul, do not say
To the Spirit, “Go ’way,
And some other time I will come;”
Lest the summer be gone,
And the harvest he done,
And the reapers be gone to their home.

It is needless to go
Down to misery and woe,
In sadness and pain and despair,
When the Savior says, “Come,
I will give thee a home
In that beautiful city so fair.”

Ah, yes, ponder it well,
For ’tis heaven or hell,
You’re thinking of choosing to day;
And the fate of your soul,
While the long ages roll,
May depend on the answer you say.

Then your tears and your sighs,
And your heart-rending cries,
Will never, no never prevail;
And your spirit will go
To the regions of woe,
In torment forever to wail.

__________

GOG AND MAGOG GATHERING TOGETHER.

_____

AMONG the ten thousand earthly projects that the restless inventive brains of Chicago are constantly studying out, the manufacture of new ecclesiastical babels seems to be the mania just now. Before the general parliament of Gog and Magog, Rome, Pagan, Balaam, Christ (?) and Belial, which was held in that city last September, some thoughtful liberalists saw in it a fine opportunity to build a tower unto the god of all religions. Hence side meetings were held during that idolatrous convocation, and the new project incubated. The Pittsburg Dispatch of Jan 25 makes the following annoucement:

“Another church will soon be introduced to the religious world. One more name will shortly be added to the already long list of religious organizations. The system of organization has already been formulated and the plan on which it will be promulgated is broad enough to include Christians, Pagans, Hebrews, Confucians and agnostics. It can include every member of the Parliament of Religions.”

“It will represent the union of all the most liberal religionists. And these are the ones interested in its organization:

The more liberal Universalists.

Unitarians.

Progressive Hebrews.

Hicksite Quakers.

Societies for Ethical Culture.

Independent churches.”

Is not this the worst skum of Gog and Magog. The gods of pride, lust and blind reason martialing their forces, and many small bundles or tares, thorns and briers, and being shocked up together and bound by one general rope of skepticism. Of course Christ has no place there, and the book of God is reduced to the level of heathen ethics. Thus they say:

“It is to be given out flatly that this new church is not and does not pretend to be a Christian church. It will not take all of its religion from the texts, but the Bible will not be thrown away. It will be taken from the pulpit and placed in the bookcase.”

“While it is denominated Unitarian it has no creed, and there is nothing in its ‘bond of union’ that prevents agnostics or any kind of religionists from joining it.”

“If the word ‘Unitarian’ giveth offense, we discard the word that we may cherish the thing.”

That is as good as saying, We are blind sinners, we know no truth, hence have no creed. But to show plainly that they are anti-christ they all do agree upon one thing, namely, to deny that the Divine Christ has come in the flesh. But even this Unitarian doctrine of devils, they are willing to hide, by discarding the word in order to deceive men, while they still cherish the Satanic lie.

No doubt this consolidation will be one of the three wings of Gog and Magog, gathered by the three unclean spirits that came out the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.

And now the papers announce another union of tare-bundles, another so-called church, just being organized in Chicago. The following paradox will sufficiently describe this last born daughter of the harlot family:

“Its creed will be Christ, its authority will be God’s work, its work the salvation of souls, salvation from sin and the salvation of the country. Each individual or church may move in with his or their doctrinal household goods, placing them in bond, in the federation store-house.”

We have heard as yet no name given the swaddling, perhaps when eight days old it will be christened.

“Its creed is Christ.” But surely it is another christ than that of the Bible. This modern christ says, come and welcome, everybody, and bring with you all “your doctrinal household goods.” But the Christ of the Bible demands that men forsake their ways and that his doctrine alone shall be believed and obeyed. The new christ of Chicago says, bring into my house freely every doctrine you please, and they will find house room and be protected. But he that was crucified for our sins says: “Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed.” 2 Jno. 9, 10. “But though we or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” Gal. 1:8, 9.

What an abominable farce, to say “no creed but Christ,” and then throw the door open for every creed, for men to bring in all their household gods and doctrines.

The trouble is, in Babylon no person can have authority to “lay judgment to the line and righteousness to the plummet.” Hence to them an exclusive Christ, and his exclusive doctrine would seem nothing less than bigotry. Not knowing the truth by the Holy Spirit sent down from heaven, they have no certain standard to lift up to the people; and are therefore compelled to let every one bring in his own doctrinal rags and rubbish.

Just while God is calling all people, creeds and doctrines down in the valley of Jehoshaphat, and is there sitting in judgement upon every thing that is not of God, and is thereby bringing out a pure remnant of one heart and one mouth, and of the same mind, and faith in Jesus — see Joel 3:2, 11-16 — through the preaching of the everlasting gospel by such as know the truth as it is in Christ Jesus; Satan is infusing a spirit in the age to rally all religionists together, saint or sinner, filled with all kinds of doctrines, upon a broad liberal platform, in order to confederate his forces against the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And this is the great battle that even blind guides are able to see pending in prophecy, but what their carnal minds look for as a literal carnage, a European war. Baxter of England said it would come not later than 1892, and his prophecyfailing, it was reappointed for 1893, and again proved the man a false prophet; as have also many other of his blind predictions. The great battle of Armageddon is a war between truth and error; between Christ and the great king of Babylon. God Almighty and his pure bride on one side, armed with the fire of the Holy Spirit, and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God. And on the other side are being mustered all carnal religious forces, “with all kinds of armor;” creeds, science, — falsely so-called — the traditions of men and doctrines of devils; and the conflict will be suddenly brought to a terminus by the personal coming of Christ, in flaming fire upon the wicked and the deceived army of falsehood. Amen. So come Lord Jesus.

PASSING THOUGHTS.

_____

THERE are two shades in life, the light and the dark; there are two roads, the narrow and the broad. What is your shade, and upon what road are you bound? I am living in the light and walking in the narrow way, kept by the power of God, and washed in the blood of Jesus who died upon the cross for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. Praise God for this salvation that saves to the uttermost! For the grace of God that bringeth salvation, hath appeared to all men.

Praise the Lord, I am on the way. And it shall be called the way of holiness, where we can live without sin; for if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son, cleanseth us from all sin. Praise God! Who is living in the dark? Who is walking in the broad way that leads to destruction? Many there be which go that road, drawn and deluded by the devil who tempts them with the pleasures of this world, and they seek their happiness in the theatre, the ball room, the gambling hell, the gilded saloon, and they call this happiness. Even in their laughter the heart is sorrowful, and the end of that mirth is heaviness. There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Oh! if only these poor deluded souls would accept Jesus and get forgiveness, and get this peace and love that Jesus gives, how willingly they would give up this world. But the blind teaching they have had and are yet having, has blinded them so that they believe they can pick up Jesus just when they want to, or they can wait, for they will have another chance later on. Oh that their eyes may see this light and may they hear the blast of the trumpet blown by God’s watchmen on the walls of Jerusalem, and wake up from the sleep of death (sin) and be saved and washed in the blood of the Lamb!

Oh! who is responsible for the lost condition of these dear souls? The shepherds that man has sent, and not God; the shepherds that feed themselves and not the flock. For thus saith the Lord God, Behold I, even I will both search my sheep and seek them out. And how is the Lord God doing this? By sending out into the field his own shepherds. How many hear the call to go and preach the gospel to all the world? A great number. But few receive God’s “go ye out.” God’s true watchmen are always in readiness, and clothed, ready for the road and the forward march onward; for there are many cities to be taken for the Lord, and where the standard must be raised and Zion be redeemed with judgment and the converts with righteousness. Praise the Lord!

Now there is another call we do not hear much about, and that is, God’s call to stop at home and work. And you will soon find out if you are in God’s order. If so, your work will become lighter, your bodily health stronger; you will lose that grasping nature that is wanting to hoard up so that you would be big in this world, and spending money foolishly on your children and on yourselves. You will at once become humble and give back to the Lord; for God’s watchmen must be fed, clothed and sheltered by those that answer God’s call to stop at home and work for the Lord. If we cannot be a prophet we can be a raven, and carry the food. Your brother in Christ, saved and sanctified,

Robert Croasdell.

Dear Saints: I feel that I am saved and washed in the blood of Jesus. I was very badly afflicted with lung pneumonia, when Bro. and Sister Orr were here. I took doctor’s medicine and got worse every dose I took; then I called on the Lord, and sent for the elders of the church and they laid on hands and prayed for me, and the Lord raised me up. Bless his name forever! The Lord saved me from the use of tobacco. I am well and able to work, and give God all the glory. Your brother saved and washed in the blood,

Dear Saints: I feel it would be to the glory of God for me to write my testimony for the TRUMPET. I was converted in the Salvation. Army two months ago, and four or five days later I sought the blessing of sanctification and testified to the blessing for six weeks; but I find upon studying the Word that I have not the blessing of sanctification. I thought I was doing God’s will when went into the Army, but when I read Jno. 8:36, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed,” I had no freedom there, for I had to take an oath to be a true soldier to the Salvation Army and always obey the lawful orders of my captain until I died. I was almost ensnared by that Army sect, but glory to our God, he showed me that it was wrong. Praise God, I am free from sectism. I feel the need of a deeper work of grace, and I want all the dear saints to pray earnestly for me that I may be baptized with the Holy Ghost and with fire. Your humble brother in Christ,

H. H. Alexander.

Dear Saints of God, Greeting: May the richest blessings of God rest upon and abide with you all. I feel led of God to write my testimony to the Trumpet, that you may all know how the dear Lord is wonderfully keeping me saved in him, free from all sin each day and hour. Praise his holy name forever! He is teaching me blessed lessons and sinking me deeper down into him and his glorious truth. Some of them come through fiery trials, but I can only thank and praise him for them all, remembering that “all things work together for good to them that love God.” And the hotter and fiercer the battle, the more glorious is the victory, and the more it strengthens and increases my faith in him who has all power both in heaven and in earth. He keeps my soul and heals my body when afflicted, and praise his dear name, he has shown me that I may not only take him for my own physician, but also for my family physician; and has wonderfully healed my two sons this winter. All glory and praise be to Jesus! He is still keeping a few of us here firm upon the solid rock, and of the same mind and in the same spirit. Please pray for us that we may always be kept true and humble in all things. There has no one yet come here to hold a meeting, but we are still praying and believing the Lord will send some one in his own good time. Your sister fully saved in Jesus,

Nettie Henderson.

Dear Brethren and Sisters: I do love you all. May our heavenly Father keep you hid safe in Jesus. I feel led of the dear Lord to write my testimony to the TRUMPET for the first time. Through the kindness of Sister Mattie Barnes, I have been permitted to read the TRUMPET some this winter, which has been a great help to me. It has taught me many things I wished to know. I was converted eight years ago. I belonged to the Methodist sect till last spring. I wrote for my letter; was living in Illinois at the time, thinking I ought to belong to some Christian church (you see how the prince of this world can blind us). Some how I never believed in earthly organizations or churches gotten up by men. It was the good Lord, I know now, that was impressing it upon my mind, that they were no good, since I have learned better. But thank God, I have never joined any sect since I received the letter. My name is in the Lamb’s book of life now. Bless the Lord! I do know I love the Lord and all his little ones. I have lived in the light the last two years (I had no light before). I was nothing more than a vile sinner, although a Methodist; but thank God, the scales fell from my eyes. I am saved, sanctified, and kept by Jesus’ power. I am happy all the day, and I desire the prayers of the dear Christians that I may continue to the end, hid in Christ, and dead to the world and sin. I have some very dear relations here that are groping in darkness; a dear brother that is unsaved, R. A. Johnston. I want all the saints to pray for him. Your sister, saved, under the blood,

Sarah M. Clark.

We have received letters from England and are glad to know that the work there is still spreading although there is much opposition to the truth, as almost everywhere else. Some of the workers are at London, Liverpool, Warrington and in the country. Let us pray much for the work there. Bro. Rupert writes that they have found some very precious brethren and sisters in Christ. He says, “Though poor in this world’s goods, yet they have seen to our temporal wants even more than we could ask, for which we are very thankful to God and to them, and we will ever hold them in the highest Christian love.” But for opening up the work in new places there is much need of help. GENERAL WESTERN CAMP MEETING.

Bro. M. H. Long of Auburn, Neb. writes, he has leased five acres timber land one mile from that town, a beautiful situation for a general camp meeting for the west, which is desired to begin about Aug. 10. No doubt this is of the Lord. Auburn is the county seat of Nemeha Co., and being near the corner of the state, will be convenient for saints to assemble from Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and Kansas. And is on a R. R. line running from St. Louis to Omaha via. of Kansas City and the B. and M. R. R. line east and west through the place. The Lord also has a good little church in that place. So that everything is favorable, and no doubt a glorious harvest of souls will be gathered. The time will, however, have to be adjusted at the June camp meeting, to the best advantage.

Springfield, O., Feb. 24, 1894.

Dear Brethren: We are glad to report victory through Christ. We were engaged in a revival meeting at Tidioute, Pa., in a Union meeting house. Commenced Feb. 17 and held to the 20th when we got word from home that our little boy was very sick. We came yesterday, found him better. I think I shall go back soon to Pennsylvania. The people gladly heard the Word and the salvation of a number of souls from sin and sectism is anticipated in. that place. Also a number of others are to be baptized. On our way home we enjoyed the privilege of meeting Bro. Warner and Co. in Oil City, Pa., who expect to hold meeting-in that new place.

He is the healer of my body and the keeper of my soul. Praise God for evermore! We are holding meeting in the town hall here in town. Have good crowds and very good interest, and some are very much convicted, but only one has been willing to yield to God and receive pardon. But we trust the promises of his word that it shall not return unto him void, but accomplish that which he pleaseth. Praise God! Oh I love the work of God. His yoke is easy and burden is light. I am dead to the world, lost to all but Jesus. Praise his name forever! Pray for us and the work here. Yours saved and sanctified,

Dear Saints of God: Jesus sweetly saves and keeps us by his power. Bless his name forever! We feel led to day to write you of God’s work in this place since we commenced to labor here. We came the 21st of Jan. and precious souls have been saved. Sixteen souls in this community and three from other places who came into the meetings here. Jesus sweetly dwells, in dear homes where Satan reigned entirely before. Praise the name of Jesus! Some of the hardest sinners who opposed God’s work are now shouting God’s praise. Sister Fisher and Sister Gardner came and helped us during the latter part of our work, and the dear saints from Hopkins came and greatly encouraged the dear young converts. Most of these are heads of families or whole families. To God be all the glory. Don’t forget to pray for these dear souls, and we too want your prayers. Your sisters, saved in the one fold,

Mary Clark and Luella Todd.

Dear Brethren: As it may be of interest let me tell something of the work God gives me. Long before I became a believer in divine healing of the body, I was deeply interested in the class of people known as “shut ins.” I endeavored to cheer and comfort them by Christian letters and became acquainted with a large number. Since God opened my eyes to his power and willingness to heal, I have been telling the glorious news to others, and praise God, some are believing. I desire the saints to pray for me that I may be given heavenly wisdom and power. In addition to this I am, as opportunities come, preaching the pure gospel. I find friends willing to listen, but the chains of sectism are too firmly riveted to be shaken off. One sister in Salem has partly received the evening light, but some of the old prejudices still remain. If the Lord opens the way, I expect to open a hall in that city where the children of God will be invited to hear the pure gospel. Dear brethren and sisters, pray for me and for precious souls here in this part of New England. The devil is blinding nearly all so that they are satisfied with the narrow limits of sects, firmly bound to creeds and rules. Pray that the Holy Spirit may rest upon this section of the country, and that souls may be saved and brought into the light. I am praising God for a perfect, glorious salvation. My heart is full to overflowing with heaven’s melodies. Hallelujah! Yours in the faith,

W. H. Willcomb.

To the Dear Saints of the Living God: May the grace of God rest upon you all. After commending our dear children to God we left them at home with Sister Lentz, one week ago last Tuesday morning and took train for this city. Found the dear saints happy in God. Since we were last here, about ten months ago, there have been a number of precious souls added to the Lord. Some who were then professing to be in the evening light have gone back into sectism but others have come out. The church has been on the aggressive in spite of all the opposing powers of darkness. The enemy has made desperate efforts to scatter the flock, but the work of God is indestructible. We are enjoying the blessed privilege of sitting together in heavenly places and ministering the word of God to his elect. The mission is well located in the city. The Lord has some consecrated singers here. They have learned most of the songs from heaven, the Echoes, which are effectual in reaching sinners and also convicting believers for the fullness of the gospel. The white fields all around us are waiting for the reapers. Who will go? There should be at least five or six tents started out for God in southern California this summer. We shall probably return home to Los Angeles for a short time, and then go forth more earnestly if possible than ever, to help rescue the dying. Much holy love to all the dear ones in Christ. Pray for us. Your brother and sister set for the defense of the gospel,

J. W. and J. Byers.

Banister, Mich., Feb. 20, 1894.

We came to this place yesterday from the Crippen school house, where the Lord wonderfully blessed our labors; held ordinance meeting on Sunday, it being our last day with them. Eighteen participated. Bro. Stephen Cook was ordained elder, and Bro. Isaac Crippen, deacon. This place is quite given over to Adventism. We shall preach the Word, be instant in season and out of season, not contending about the law, Tit. 3:9, but knowing nothing but Christ and him crucified. God has already given us the victory through the preaching of his word. Out of the fourteen that compose the congregation at the Crippen school house, eight were called out of Babylon, and six others converted by the preaching of the Word. All consecrated for sanctification. There are many more in this vicinity that we feel that God will bring out soon. Banister, where we now are, is only three and a half miles from the Crippen school house, and we expect much from the Lord yet. Let the dear saints of God every where pray that God may have mercy upon these poor deluded creatures, and bring them out of Babylon. The Methodist preacher at this place has forbidden the members of his sect coming to hear us. Could the Papacy, the Mother of harlots do more? could we expect anything else? are not they her children? But Satan is raging. Pray that God may keep us humble, low down, hid away with Christ in God. We are saved and sanctified, subject to him in everything, praising his name.

Dear Saints: God bless you all abundantly. We are glad to report victory in our souls. The Lord is wonderfully blessing the work at this place. The people have been getting saved and the sick are being healed, and the Lord is working on the hearts of others. On New Year’s day five dear souls were buried with Christ in baptism. All came out shouting the high praises of God. Glory to our King! At night the saints assembled and the other ordinances of God’s church, washing the saints’ feet and the Lord’s supper, were obeyed according to the commands of Jesus. Fourteen saints partook, and truly the Lord was glorious in the midst. “If you know these things, happy are ye if ye do them,” was realized by all that were willing and humble enough to obey God. Bro’s Will Slate and R. L. Berry held a five nights meeting in Rockwall, Rockwall Co., and the seed was sown. The Free Methodists had been there and had set up their sect, but the Lord let the truth on some of them and if they walk in the light they will get clear for God. Some already have so much light that they cannot get any experience in the sect. The Word was talked from house to house in town, and also in the adjoining country, and some were found who were favorable to God’s way on holiness. This is a new field and the work is large. Many workers are needed. The Lord is wonderfully blessing us, soul and body, temporal and spiritual, and by God’s help we will do all we can to spread the truth. Pray for us and the work here. If any feels led to come, obey God. Yours, saved and sanctified,

G. W. Brake, L. C. Slate and Co.

Dear Beloved Family: We wish to report again the work of the Father in and through us his humble children. We are sanctified in the Lord Jesus Christ, contented with the way He leadeth us, and giving him the praise. Our last report was from this place. A few souls were saved after we wrote to you. Our next place of meeting was Montague, Mich, where two souls consecrated to God. From there we went to Coral, Mich. Here dear Bro. E. Soules has the second story of his chair factory nicely fitted up for meeting. All we could see as the direct result of this meeting was the removing of some prejudice and one brother escaping

from the Free Methodist sect. From there went to Muskegon and held meeting for a few evenings which were precious to our soul. Some six or seven consecrations, and the church more fully filled with Jesus. The meeting closed with the observance of the sacred ordinances in which Jesus seemed so near and the saints so dear. In all the above meetings we were treated with much kindness by all the dear ones, and some unsaved friends were also very good and kind. We shall hold them all in grateful remembrance. We feel so unworthy of the love of God and the kindness of his people. Please pray for us. We have come again to this place to stay for a short time; out look good for a precious meeting. From here wife and I expect to go to Allerton, Wayne Co., Ia. Address us there. Yours saved,

Chas. and Minnie Orr and A. Radebaugh.

Dear Trumpet Readers and Saints: I can report the Lord’s work at this place gradually advancing. The church is being more and more established, and precious souls added to, and established in the unity of the body of Christ, which is the church. Bro. Byers and wife are with us, and we have been receiving some precious teachings, that we needed so much. And, an interest is being awakened to sinners that I pray will redound to the glory of God. The evening light is spreading steadily but sure. God is opening up a couple of good fields for preaching his gospel in the surrounding country. One is already established, and a nice little body of people gather at La Presa school house, and have preaching every other Sunday. Praise God! I am praying God to send out more of his Holy Ghost preachers to preach the Word in the villages and towns in the community where they (preachers) live. There are so many that are waiting for some great thing to open up, some expecting to go off a great distance to some appointment, etc., when souls are perishing all around them, and yet they are saying, Lord send me. God wants to see whether you are willing to do the little things first, before he gives you some great thing to do. God help us, dear ones, to get out and do something. The time is short. If God would give you all you think you ought to have, before you go to preach his gospel, you would not (the probabilities are) go at all. If you did you would go with a compromising spirit and land in Babylon, just where many others are to day. Let God try you dear ones, and prove yourselves. We are determined by the grace of God, to go through on this line, and proclaim the truth over hills and through the valleys. Repent and be baptized or you shall perish. Yours, all for Jesus,

To all the Dear Saints: To day finds me saved and happy in the Savior’s love, continually under the blood, ready to do His will and go wherever he sends and do his bidding at all times. Dear Bro. Lundy and I started for the south from Grand Junction, Oct. 31, and arrived at Tullahoma, Tenn., Nov. 3. We found dear Bro. Jellis anxiously awaiting our arrival and ready to take us to the place of meeting. We found all the dear ones very anxious to have us come, for they were looking for a harvest of souls, which they saw, and for which we give God all the glory. Oh we do thank God for the many precious souls that received the cleansing. We had many, many precious meetings at the Cross Roads. In our travels in the South this winter there were four sect ministers accepted the truth and are ready for the Master’s work. From Cross Roads we went to Millville, Tenn. and held about one month. The people took the truth with a good attendance, and we did the Lord’s will in presenting the truth and scattering many tracts, and scores of people saw the evils of tobacco and would stop the evil habit even if they did not get out clear for the Lord, and many saw the evils of sectism and acknowledged the same and some dear ones got out straight for the Lord. Oh the many places that are anxiously waiting for meeting! And when we would feel the Lord wanted us to go to new fields they would cry for us to stay. But we had to bid them farewell, for the gospel must be preached in other countries also and in other places. From Millville we took our departure to a new field; namely Fayetteville. We went the journey by wagon. Our dear friend Mr. Hambrick provided the conveyance and took us to the above named place. May God bless his soul with salvation, for all the kindness that he and his dear wife showed to us. The people gave good attendance, and good order prevailed. The people were very anxious to hear the truth. From Fayetteville I felt it my duty to go to Michigan and dear Bro. Lundy felt led to Alabama. So we bade each other good by, until it is the Lord’s will to put us together again. I came back by the way of Tullahoma and found dear Bro. Curl anxiously waiting on the depot platform at Estal Springs for me. We went on horse back six or seven miles and there found the little ones assembled, ready waiting to have meeting. The Lord did not permit us to have but a very few nights rest without meeting during all the winter, and we were glad to let him have his way. Our short stay at this place resulted in much good. Thirteen consecrations in all, and all seemed to get what their heart had so long craved. May God bless them for all their kindness to me and keep them in the unity of the Spirit, and the bonds of peace. Your brother saved to the uttermost and out for the Lord,

Greenwood, S. C., Feb. 13, 1894.

Dear Brethren and Readers of the Gospel Trumpet: God abundantly bless you all and keep you preserved unto his heavenly kingdom. Praise our God for his loving kindness and tender mercy to usward! We are glad that we can report that we are fully saved through the blood of Jesus our dear Lord, and have a reasonable degree of health for which we give God all the glory. After Bro. Carter departed from us at Augusta, Ga. to go Anderson, S. C., I took Bro. Oglesby and went to Hawthorne, and held services a few days. The Lord blessed the word and some received it which proved a savor of life unto life. Among the small number that consecrated was a Baptist preacher, a brother to sister Jane Williams of Augusta, Ga. I hope the brother will remain faithful and that God will make him an instrument of good to the people with whom he associates. I dismissed the meeting near Hawthorne on account of some difficulty that arose in an adjoining neighborhood, between the white and colored people which reached the meeting and agitated the minds of the people and stopped the progress of the work. So I returned to Augusta, Ga. and commenced a meeting in the vicinity of the Augusta factory. The Lord enabled us to present the Word to the people so that a few accepted of the offer of mercy and got saved. There were about twenty-five, consecrations in all, but we are certain that all of them did not get an experience of salvation. May the Lord bless and keep all who found him, for his name’s sake. I understand that May and Pendergrass have united after they were blown overboard by the word of God, and hold their meetings in the old Bronner meeting honse. I suppose Pendergrass will play bishop and May presiding elder. Well it may do for this life but when they face the truth which was preached to them when time is no more, it will not be so pleasant to remember the reason why they rejected it, and to give an account of the same. May God have mercy on them and get them saved if possible before they pass from time into eternity. We expect to commence meeting to morrow night here in Greenwood and desire the prayers of the saints in our behalf. Pray for us and the work in the south. Your saved and sanctified brother in Christ,

A. J. Kilpatrick.

Cedarville, Va., Feb. 22, 1894. Dear Saints of God: I am glad to report that I am fully saved in Jesus, reigning in this life, preaching a perfect salvation to the people among the Pine Hills, a salvation that does save men and women from their sins in this life. While holding up this real Bible salvation to the people, it seems to be a strange doctrine to some, as they never have heard it in that way. Truly the Word declares there is a famine in the land, not a famine of bread nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. Amos 8:11. The people in this country are very anxious to hear the Word. But while the people are anxious to hear, they are very loth to accept the Word. Only three up to this time have consecrated for pardon. They acknowledge we preach the Word. Their slowness to accept is attributed to the false teaching they have had in the past. Also through the crooked living of cold professors some people here have turned infidels. Oh that dear souls would be honest and straight for God! Dear saints, live up to the profession you make, as we are in perilous times. Likewise reckon ye yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Rom. 6:11. While you are dead indeed, obey the Word and keep dead for Jesus’ sake.

Dear Bro. W. H. Miller left for home. Some years ago he received an injury, the effects of which does disable him in climbing those Pine Hills. He had been for a few days realizing the effects of the injury. The night of the 20th he suffered very much, and also on yesterday. He then concluded he had better get to a different locality. God bless the dear brother. While he was my yoke-fellow, now we are separated and I am alone with Jesus, out preaching his Word. I do need your prayers that God may give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may so speak that multitudes may be saved. Our night and day meetings were well attended. To morrow will cross the Shenandoah river if the Lord wills; will commence the battle in Howlsville and surrounding country. My P. O. address will be Cedarville for a short time. I am determined by the grace of God to work for him till he is through with me here, and go wherever he may lead, as I am sold out to God entirely. Pray earnestly for me. Yours all on the altar, and under the blood,

F. Rosenberry.

Dear Saints of God: We are glad to report through the TRUMPET once more to the saving of our souls. God has been keeping us since we have come to Colorado. As it has been some time since our last report, we feel that God wants us to tell something of the work in Colorado. We have spent most of the winter so far, in Denver, and God has been adding a few to the church, such as would be saved. Those who came out with a determination to go through for God, got a good experience. Others who started found the way so straight and narrow they were not willing to walk in it. But we have seen the Word fulfilled in Mark 4:16-19. The Word was sown; they received the Word, but some had no root in themselves, others let the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches, and pride and worldly conformity choke the Word, and they became unfruitful. May God help all such to realize their true condition. Some have gone back into Babylon and become teachers in Sunday schools, and have confessed to others that they know they ought not to be there. God has a separate people, and except ye forsake all, ye cannot be his disciples.

On New Year’s day we had an ordinance meeting, in which twenty took part, and God was with us in great power. Shortly after, this meeting our dear Bro. Sticksel was ordained by the laying on of hands to the work of the ministry, we believing it to be in the order of the Lord, realizing Paul’s admonition, “Lay hands suddenly on no man,” but through much prayer, the elders had felt for some time that the Lord was leading in that way. And when we obeyed the Lord, God did witness to our souls. Bro. Sticksel feels led to work among the German people, and there is much need of workers who are consecrated to work among all classes in Colorado but only those who are consecrated to do anything or go anywhere, and endure hardness, are all God has any use for. But praise God, those who are willing to submit themselves entirely into the hands of the Lord, lave the blessed promise, “I am with you always.” On Jan. 13, feeling the Lord was done with us at Denver for the present, we took train and came to this place, where we found the people anxious for the truth. We held a three week’s meeting in a “dug out” with good results. There have been eleven at the altar. Most all received a bright experience in justification, and some have consecrated and got a clear experience in the second work. But it appears as though the people are so steeped in sin, it is almost impossible for them to escape. Dear ones, we need your prayers for the work out here. We are holding meeting at present at the Wyatt school louse and conviction is resting upon the people. We began Feb. 4, and will continue as long as the Lord wills. There are other calls waiting for us There is much need of consecrated workers in this western country, for there is a large scope of country here where the evening light has not been preached. Any one writing to us, address us at Eaton, Colo., as this will be our permanent address while in Colo. Your brother and sister all on the altar, clothed with the garments of salvation,

T. A. and E. E. Phillips.

Woodburn, Ore., Feb. 8, 1894.

Dear Saints of God: We are happy to report that we are saved and doing all that we can for the furtherance of the gospel in the evening light, along this part of the Pacific coast, and God is blessing our labors. I have not had the privilege of being engaged in the gospel work near all the time, but we expect to soon be perfectly free again to go forth to tell the people of the wonderful works of God, and to hasten his coming by preaching this gospel of the kingdom. I know that the way is opening up for a glorious harvest of souls for God in in the near future. I have been permitted to hold forth the word of life to the people in several different places since we came here, but not long in a place; only long enough to sow some seed. Among the different places one was in the neighborhood around Waterloo, Ore., about sixty miles south of here. The people there want us to return in the spring and hold three or four protracted meetings around Waterloo, and then as soon as the weather is warm enough, to hold out door meetings, pitch the battle in the beautiful grove for most all summer if the Lord so leads, as that is a noted summer and health resort. It is said by those living near there that there is constantly masses of people coming and going, some seeking pleasure, some health, and many are located in tents. They say there is never a Sunday passes but what there are from one to five thousand people on the grounds from all parts of the world: Besides this, the way is opening up for the Word in many other places, but it does seem as if every avenue of approach has been closed against us in Woodburn. But the Lord has opened the way for me to preach Sunday evenings out in the country. I would also say that if anyone feels that you would like to do something for the Lord in the way of scattering TRUMPETS and tracts, and have done your duty in your own neighborhood you can send your order in to the office and have them sent to me, and I will place them where I believe they will be most to the glory of God. I could use thousands of them out here. Now I have been in great need of holy literature since coming west, but not feeling free to ask the dear brethren at the office who have so much to pay out and so little to do with, I have done the best I could, and have kept silent about them until now. But dear ones, I feel that God wants a mighty forward move by the inhabitants of Zion in this place, and I for one want to be fully prepared in every respect. If any feel led to aid in the work in this way, please order principally TRUMPETS, and tracts on the Church and “Must we Sin” and as many others as the Lord may lead. My very soul is burning with holy love to night to see a holy remnant gathered out for God in this western country, that will follow the King of saints through the hottest of the battle to rescue poor souls that are drunk on the wine of sectism. I was out to the Episcopalian sect meeting to night, and oh, the soul destroying place! Truly it is a court for owls, and the habitation of devils, and yet those lovers of darkness are deceiving both old and young, and stretching out upon them the lines of confusion. Let me ask, are you all doing your whole duty, or are you getting weak? For Jesus’ sake and the sake of precious souls, let us do our duty.

I would just say to the dear brethren that have written to us, that your letters have done us good and we would love to answer all if we had time, but it is almost impossible for to do so at present, but will as soon as I can, so keep on writing as the Lord may lead. And to those feeling led to come west to labor with us in the gospel, I would say, keep on praying for God to make duty plain and then open the way for you to come, for the weather will soon be so we can hold out door meetings, and there is great need of more holy ministers out here. Pray for us. From your brother justified freely and sanctified wholly,

J. L. Green.

THE NATURE OF FAITH.

_____

I trust there are many of you, my dear friends, who clinging closely to the word of God instead of the traditions of men, are already beginning to realize the blessed privilege which may be yours — that of accepting your Savior as the great physician of your soul and body. — You may have long ago accepted him as the physician of your soul, but do you really feel satisfied that you have experienced a complete spiritual healing? Are you fully assured that your sins are forgiven, and that your soul is, or has been born anew? Do you feel that you have been brought to the full salvation which Christ meant should be ours when he suffered on Calvary? I doubt not there are many hearts that will give sad answers to these questions, knowing as they do that they have not been filled with the joy and with the holy Ghost, Acts 13:52. I beg of you to trust God for a more complete healing of soul than you have ever known before, and trust him also for the healing of your weak, suffering body. I think I can tell from my experience one of the first temptations which you will encounter in your attempt to do this. You are probably saying that other people may claim the promise in Jas. 5:14, 15, but I am not good enough; God would not thus favor any but those who have led very pious lives.

We are so apt to lose sight of the all important fact that we have no righteousness of our own in the first place, that there is none righteous, no not one, but we may and must put on Christ as our righteousness. We all know this, but do we realize it? Considering our own unworthiness, we have none of us a right to present a single petition to God, for their is no difference, for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. — Rom. 3:22, 23. We must look entirely away from self to our Savior and thus realize what we may receive through his merits. We may come boldly to the throne of grace, through the righteousness of God, which is by the faith of Jesus Christ, unto all, and upon all that believe. Clad in the robe of His righteousness, we may then claim all the wonderful blessings extended to the righteous. We read, Thou Lord, wilt bless the righteous; with favor wilt thou compass him as with a shield. The Lord loveth the righteous. His secret is with the righteous. The desire of the righteous shall be granted. The righteous is delivered out of trouble. The way of the righteous is made plain. And many more such precious texts; which, when we realize that they may be ours through Christ, make our hearts sing with joy.

In the examples of great faith given us in the gospels, we see how persistently and fearlessly the most humble sinners approached their holy Lord, when losing sight of themselves in him. Please notice the difference between the conduct of the ten lepers who stood afar off, and that of the other poor lepers we read of, who came to Jesus beseeching him and kneeling down to him. The former dared not approach Christ because of the law respecting their terrible disease; but the latter had, it seems, in his opportunity and faith, dared to approach so near the Savior that he could touch him by putting forth his hand. So we, viewing ourselves in the light of the law, see our souls so vile and loathsome that we dare not approach the Holy One; but with the eye of faith, we are ready to approach him and receive according to our faith. When we begin to realize that God is no respecter of persons and that all who go to him in the name of Jesus Christ are accepted alike; when we have given up the idea that any one can have righteousness of his own; then a very great barrier is broken down between God’s gifts and ourselves. But Satan is always ready to put up new barriers, and he comes to us with difficulties concerning our faith.

We are apt to regard faith as something high and mysterious, which no one can contain, or attain to, unless born with an unusual degree of it. Some are deceived by thinking that great and repeated struggles of mind are necessary in order to secure it, and this idea is pretty strongly rooted, until we really understand the nature of faith. I could not express this erroneous notion better than by repeating the very remark which I heard a person speak about at one time, after questioning me about my cure. She exclaimed, “Well I am sure I could not have mustered up enough faith.” Faith is belief. And the question is, not how much we must believe God’s word, but whether we accept it as true or not true; whether we deem it reliable or not reliable. There is no neutral ground between faith and unbelief. Of all Satan’s delusions, perhaps none are more delusive than the errors he puts into our minds regarding our faith.

Let us take the Bible definition of the word. “Faith is the substance [margin, confidence] of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” — Heb. 11:1. We know in human transactions, if we have the confidence that we shall have what we are hoping for, we make the same calculations mentally, at least, that we should if we already had it; and when we place that confidence in one who can not fail, we really have the substance itself of our hopes. Again, if we commission a reliable friend to perform some errand for us, we believe he will do it, and therefore that belief (our faith) is the evidence in our mind of things as yet unseen, before we have the evidence of our senses in regard to the matter. We accept the evidence of faith. Having faith in God is believing his word without looking at probabilities or possibilities as humanly viewed, without regarding natural circumstances, without considering any apparent obstacles in the way of keeping his promises. If every avenue of hope seems closed to our human vision, God can open new ones, and we must trust his word through everything. It is not faith simply to believe when we can see all of the workings of providence; it is faith not to be staggered at any complication of adverse circumstances. And this is the confidence that we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us: and if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. — 1 John 5:14, 15. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. — St. John 14:13, 14.

We get some valuable knowlege of faith from the teaching and recital of the healing of the poor woman in St. Mark 5:25-34. She had been afflicted with her disease for twelve years, and had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse. How exactly the language of the verse describes the experience of many poor sufferers in these days, who having sought relief by every means possible, find themselves in a worse condition then they were in the start, who are left without money to pay more doctor bills. Just at the time of her utter discouragements, this woman heard of Jesus. Probably she had heard of his wonderful works before this, but until she had tried every means and they had failed, she was probably not willing or ready to hear of him with faith, and this is the great trouble with some to day. This poor woman came in the press behind and touched his garments; for she said, If I can only get to touch his clothes, I shall be made whole. Oh, that we might thus press through the crowd of doubts and fears and let nothing stay us until we have touched the hem of Christ’s garments.

Dear Saints: I will send my testimony in for the first time. The Lord is doing a wonderful work in this place. He has saved about thirty souls. We just praise his name for it. I am saved from all sins; am justified and sanctified. I praise God for his great saving power. And as he gives me light I intend to walk in it. Pray for me all ye saints. Your sister in Christ,

Dear Saints of God: We are praising God for victory in our souls, for a salvation that saves from all sin. I chewed tobacco for about thirty years. By the grace of God I am free from tobacco and everything that is contrary to God’s holy will. I am trusting God for all things. My health is better than it has been for years. Praise the name of the Lord for this wonderful salvation! Your brother in Christ,

Thomas Clifton.

Dear Saints of the Living God: I do praise God this morning for salvation which saves and keeps me each day of my life. I have been a member of the Evangelical sect for about twelve years; but praise the Lord, about one year ago the Lord called me out into this evening light, free from all sects and Babylon. Oh I praise God that there is a fulness in Jesus Christ, and whosoever will may come and drink of the water of life freely. Your saved sister,

Hannah Burkett.

Dear Ones in Christ: I want to glorify God by giving my testimony. God for Christ’s sake did forgive my sins. In the year 1868 I joined the Methodist sect. I did not know I was already in the only true church when I was converted. I lived the best I knew for eighteen years; then glory be to God, I heard the evening light, though I had a hard time, owing to my prejudice, to get the blessed experience. I kept praying, reading and trusting until the blood was applied and I was sanctified, and the best of it is, I am still sanctified. Praise the Lord!

Dear Saints: I praise God this evening for salvation. I am free from all sectism. I never heard holiness preached till last March. I had been taught that we had to sin, and I began to fight holiness. But I began to read my Bible to condemn it, and when I would read it, would condemn me, and I came out on the Lord’s side in the evening light, and I am holding the true light. I want you all to pray for me that I may ever be faithful, and pray for the work here. The evening light has never been preached here, and there is much opposition here. We would be glad if some Holy Ghost preachers would come this way if the Lord leads. Your brother in the one faith,

S. M. Rich.

Dear Saints of God: Prase God for the work he has done in my heart! He brought me up out of an horrible pit, out of the mire and clay and set my feet on a rock, and that rock is Christ Jesus. I can say that the Lord Jesus Christ saves me from all sin and cleanses my heart from all unrighteousness, and heals me. Praise his holy name! I was one of the many that done all they can against the cause of Christ, yet in his abundant mercy he brought me out of darkness into light. I am walking in that light, and I am a free man in Christ Jesus. He that is faithful to the end, the same shall be saved. I want to be one of faithful, and by God’s grace I will. Your brother in Christ,

J. Claud Clemence.

Dear Trumpet Readers: My wife and I live in the Sac and Fox Co., and we truly desire some of God’s saints to come here and tell the people that there is a God in Israel. The evening light has never been preached here. I feel there are some here that God wants to save, but how can they except they hear the word. There has been but little preaching in this country since I have lived here. Now if any of you feel this call is to you, come and we will share with you of such things as we have. I have written to Bro. Houghten to come here, but he failed to give me his address, and requested me to write again. I live three miles north west of Cushing. We have just finished a school house that will be a good place to held meeting. I remain your true brother in Jesus,

Wm. M. Smith.

Dear Saints: I feel it would be to the glory of God for me to write what great things the Lord is doing for me. I have been afflicted about fourteen years; was treated by seven doctors, but grew worse. But since I have heard the gospel in its purity I have found the great physician of both soul and body. I have put my case into his hands, and have not taken any medicine since. My health is greatly improved and I am trusting the Lord for a complete recovery from even the weakness produced by my long illness. I lived a Missionary Baptist for twenty years; but praise the Lord, I have found the truth on the church question and am in the true church of God, the one body of Christ, and am praising the Lord for a full and free salvation. Glory to Jesus! Amen. Your sister in Christ,

Susan Lester.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I thought it would be to the praise of God that I write my testimony for the first time. I want to say that I am praising God for salvation that does keep me. I do enjoy the presence of God. It is a blessing to me to know that I do please my dear Savior that suffered and died for me. When holiness came in here I didn’t know the joy in living it. I thought to give up all my worldly enjoyment was more than I could bear, but I can say of a truth that I do enjoy this much more, although young folks may not think so. But I often think when I see how careless they are, that I am glad the Lord was very mindful of me; and it makes me sink deeper down in the will of God when I see what a few there are that will live soberly, righteously and godly in this world. We should be sober and pray much that God can get more true workers and more that he can trust. Jesus says, if a man abide not in him he is cast forth as a branch and is withered. And John says, Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not. Pray for me? Your sister in Christ,

Amanda C. Hall.

Dear Editor and Trumpet Readers: I have been saved for four years washed and made clean in His precious blood. I was converted when I was eighteen, but not understanding sanctification and God’s power to keep from sin, I was a backslider from God’s grace until four years ago the Lord showed me where I was and brought me back into his fold. Praise his name forever! I am washed and made clean by his precious blood. He is keeping me moment by moment. I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ that liveth in me, and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God who loveth me and gave himself for me. The joy of the Lord is my strength. I am waiting with joy and longing for the coming of the Lord. We go out on the street every night and sing God’s praises until a crowd gathers, then we plead with them for their souls and invite them to the hall. A great many come and find the Lord. Praise his name! Your in Christ,

Julia N. Torrance.

Dear Saints: I feel like adding my testimony with the redeemed of the Lord. I do praise God for this river of peace that ishues from the throne of God and reaches even me, and causes me to rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory. I praise God for a salvation that is able to keep us even in these trying times. I realize more every day what perilous times we are living in. Sin and iniquity abounds on every hand. Truly we are living in the last days. But can we look for anything different? no; for “evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.” Oh how sad! The people of to day seem ready and willing to believe and accept anything but Jesus, and his pure unadulterated Word. They cannot endure the whole word of God. None are safe without areal settled experience upon the solid rock. We must close our eyes, and stop our ears to everything but God. God’s word gives us warning of what shall come; and let us have on the whole armor of God, that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the delil. When I see the great deception and darkness that to day covers the land, I feel to praise God that my heart is established and that I have made my escape from this world. Praise the Lord! We are not of this world, but are chosen out of this world, and are come unto mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. Oh bless the Lord forever! Let us continue in the faith, grounded and settled in the hope of the gospel. I do praise God for this evening light. But it means much to live this light. I feel like doubling my vigilance for God, to press on and do all I can for the Master. Your sister, saved and in the one body,

Lucy M. Lewis.

Dear Trumpet Readers: This is my first testimony to the Trumpet. I am kept by the grace and power of God from day to day. My daughter and myself are entirely alone here, and yet not alone, for Jesus is with us all the time. I stepped out of the sect into the glorious evening light five years ago the last of this month, the 14th of March the same year the Lord healed me of a severe affliction. Since that time the Lord has been my physician for soul and body. I have been instantly healed of the Lord many times since then, once of a catarrh in the joint of my left wrist, once of a sprained ankle, once of a badly scalded hand. My hand slipped and went into a smoking hot vessel of tallow. The Lord healed it; in a moment the fire was out and the pain was gone. I went on with my work the same as if it had not been burned Then this winter I was severely afflicted with, as I suppose, LaGrippe. It affected my head and spine until I thought I would lose my mind. There were no elders near, and I became almost discouraged, but right there and then God came to my help. While I slept a moment I heard those words: “It there no balm in Gilead? is there no physician there?” I awoke and asked the Lord what it meant. He said there was no need of my suffering; he was near to heal me. I simply took him at his word and I was healed. Hallelujah to the Lamb forever! Amen and amen! I have been quite well ever since. Praise the Lord! Purified, made white and tried, dwelling in the secret place of the Most High, and abiding under the shadow of the Almighty. Your sister saved and sanctified, and now being kept moment by moment.

Zilpha Waterbury.
