Sectisms.

—‡0‡—

Hark the gospel trumpet sounding,
And it gives a CERTAIN sound;
Sects and parties are abounding,
But “The Truth” will cut them down.

Hireling Priest and proud professors,
In alliance close combine;
To contend with the possesser,
Who enjoy true light divine.

But “The Truth” of God with power,
Cuts its way, though hell oppose;
Human wisdom’s mighty tower,
Falls before it as it goes.

Churches decked with silk and scarlet,
For their festivals and fairs;
All are marks of the old harlot,
Which the wicked world admires.

For the gospel Truth condemns them,
Shows a meek and lowly way;
Travelers few, but God sustains them,
While they strive to watch and pray.

These though FEW are bound for heaven,
Self denying, humble low;
Knowing all their sins forgiven,
Persecuted here below.

Hireling priests are sore tormented,
For their craft in danger stands;
Every plot has been invented,
To uphold their popish plans.

But their plans though deep devised,
Yet ere long must all come down;
Jacob’s small, but he arises,
Light is spreading all around.

The true Light has long been hidden,
By sectarian bigotry;
Now the Lord His guests has bidden,
Come enjoy true liberty.

Come at once and claim your birth-right,
Pass the “mess of pot’age” by.
Come to Christ, and live forever,
Come to day “why will ye die”

THE OFFERING OF SACRIFICES.

—:†:o:†:—

There is much said about making sacrifices to the Lord, and for the spread of the Gospel, and yet so many earnest, zealous persons fail to make the proper sacrifices required to bring about, or obtain salvation.

If people desire the love of God in their souls, they must make their sacrifices according to the Word of God, and it will result in the salvation of the soul from all sin.

The sinner who is seeking to know the riches of God’s treasure house, first offers himself, “dead in tresspasses and sins”, to God; and He “who is just and faithful to forgive” speaks pence to the weary soul, removes the load of sin, and the poor wanderer is converted from his sinful state into a state of grace. He is made alive in Christ, born into the kingdom, a child of the King, and an heir to his riches. He is now in a justified state with God; is only a babe in Christ. But as He goes forth rejoicing in this christian warfare, he soon discovers an element within which leads him to exclaim as did Paul, “that when I would do good, evil is present with me.” By reading the Word of God he finds that this element is the “body of sin,” the evil nature inherited through the fall of Adam, and row as he is made alive in Christ, it is his privilege to offer his “body a living sacrifice.”

The offering of his body as a living sacrifice is an act of faith, and in order to take this step, a person must have been made alive in christ, which removed all actual transgressions, or sins committed, but left the “body of sin” or evil nature which causes a person to commit sin. But now since the first has been removed by the blood of Jesus Christ, through faith in Him, it gives access to enter into a deeper experience of grace “wherein we now stand,” by which we are transformed by the renewing of our minds, that we may do the perfect will of God. When this sacrifice is made according to the will of God, the heart is made pure; it is purged from all unrighteousness, and the very elements of sin are all eradicated and swept away, and the soul is enabled to soar along in the bliss of moral perfection. But in order to reach this point it takes a real consecration of ourselves and all we have. We cannot obtain this blessing and try to keep back anything for our own selfish motives, but it takes a full surrender, and submission to the will of God.

It takes a crucifixion of self and selfish desires, and giving up of all sinful pleasures, and worldly conformity; it takes a perfect sacrifice and no other will be acceptable.

The person who makes a consecration according to the Bible, will get Bible salvation, and enjoy the experience of entire santification being filled with the power of the Holy Ghost, and can again exclaim as did Paul, after he had reached the experience and was purged from this evil nature, when he said, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I but, Christ liveth in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Can sinners make this sacrifice or consecration and become sanctified?

No. Because they are not made alive in Christ, hence can not offer their “Bodies a living sacrifice.” Neither can hypocrites, for God knows their hearts and will not accept their offering no difference how many times they go through a form of consecration and claim it. Neither can backsliders make this consecration. The only persons that can make the proper sacrifice, and obtain the blessing of entire sanctification, are those who have been converted and are living in a clear justified state with God. A person may have been converted at one time and afterward committed sin, and kept on with a profession of salvation without any repentance; such ones must repent and confess their sins before they can become sanctified. Anyone can obtain this blessing by beginning at the right place, and by believing God’s Word and acting on that belief. When this experience is reached it is shown forth in a pure and holy life, bearing the fruits of righteouseess, even under the most trying circumstances.

Here is one thing to be noticed: if we expect to ever get to heaven we must make a sacrifice of the things of this world.

If we do not do this we make a greater sacrifice by giving up and forsaking Christ and all hope of heaven. If any one will not give up their filthy habits, tobacco, whisky, pride, socials, sectism, secret societies, evil associates, etc., they need not expect to be clothed with the pure white robes of righteousness, for the Lord will have no part nor lot with them, and they will only receive the rebukes of God’s Word no difference how much they profess. When professors of holiness fail to show the fruits of holiness, they have a mere profossion instead of a possession. But all who go on unto perfection are richly rewarded, both in this life and the life to come.

CHARITY, LOVE. 1 Cor. 13:1

“Beloved if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. If we love one another God dwelleth in us and His Word is perfected in us. God is love, and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God and God in him. Herein is our love made perfect that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear, because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” 1 Jno. 4:11-18.

In the above passages of scripture, we find that love is an object of possesion and not of mere profession. The world is full of profession, and if the devil can get a soul to make a profession of religion, without really possessing if, he has Won half the battle; for he knows that they have not what they profess to have and are likely to settle down with a dead empty profession which will not disturb the conscience of any one. When a soul is saved and has the love of God shed abroad in his heart by the Holy Ghost, which is given unto us, he does not trouble himself about profession; for the profession will take care of itself and be the natural outflow of what he possesses. In 1 Cor. 13 we see that Paul puts love above every thing else and makes it the essential principle of a christian.

“For now abideth faith, hope and charity, but the greatest of these is charity, or love, ver. 13. Many make charity works, and vice verca but the distinction, between love and works, is shown in verse 3. Giving of our goods to feed the poor and clothe the naked and the giving of our bodies to be burned are works. And the apostle says, though I do these things and have not charity (love) it profiteth me nothing. He may have performed these things and yet have been void of the love of God in his soul. And spiritually, he would not have been benefited, for he had works instead of love God works are the result of love, and love always goes, hand in hand, with works. Now if charity had been works, Paul would not have made the difference between the giving of his body to be burned, which is works, and having charity, which is love. We find also, in the same chapter, what love will not do and what it will do. Many sectarian professors who claim to have so much of God’s love in their souls, would do well to make this passage of scripture a careful and prayerful study; and beware how they strain at a gnat, while at the same time, it may be said that they are swallowing a camel. harity suffereth long and is kind. ver. 4. One of the fruits of the spirit is long suffering. Gal. 5:22. Many are willing to suffer when they think they see a chance for making money or gaining honor; but when money or honor ceases they flicker out and fall away. This is not love that suffereth long and is kind. It does not matter how much persecution and reproach is heaped upon a soul that is in posession of the love of which Paul speaks. For the love of Christ constraineth him. And knowing that tribulation worketh patience, and patience experience, and experience hope, and hope maketh net ashamed for the love of God is shed abroad in his heart by the Holy Ghost, he willingly suffers these things without murmuring; nor is easily removed by affronts and offences. This love will not lead us to draw a hasty conclusion in any instance, and to judge rashly where we ought not. To illustrate I will relate a little incident, that once came under my observation. A young Bro. [only in a justified state] who was naturally of a very timid nature, for some cause, reason not known, failed to testify in a meeting held by a certain evangelist. Some one was inquiring as to the reason of the failure, when the Bro. evangelist replied in a rather hasty way, “He has not got any salvation is the reason why.” The young Bro. afterward showed that he was not backslidden and that the evangelist was a little mistaken. The Word of God does not give any authority for such rash judgment. It does however command us to speak the truth in love, and in all things, “is kind.” “Charity envieth not.” That, which God has seen fit to bestow upon another, is not desired by the soul in posession of this love; for God’s will is the highest pleasure and delight. And what God sees best to with-hold or to give is joyfully submitted to; realizing that God knoweth best in all things, and will not withhold any good thing from them that walk uprightly. “Love is not puffed up,” when there is liberty in talking, singing or any other work of the Lord. Think of a minister after preaching the Word, as he supposes with a large degree of liberty, bragging and boasting what a big sermon he had preached; thus showing that he is puffed up. The best place for that person is in the closet on his knees. Jesus would not allow the disciples to rejoice because the devils were subject unto them. But if there was any rejoicing it should be because their names were written in heaven. After the Word is preached what honor, O man, is due unto thee? Thou art still an unprofitable servant and hast done no more than what thou oughtest to do, if thou art in the order of God. Wherefore, then the cause that thou art puffed up? A soul that is filled with love is always teachable; he is ready to take lessons even from the weakest child of God. Instead of finding fault and being ready to separate, when things do not go as smoothly as they think they ought, they will be patient and bear all things as becometh servants of God. While the child of God learns that charity covers a multitude of sins (or faults), there is no compromise, in any degree, with sin in any form. Some are so good and so sweet that they cannot reprove sin when they see it. Such sweetness is not of God. There is so much of this shoddy holiness, which passes in the sight of God for nothing and is drowning souls in perdition, that accepts everything in the form of worship as from God, and fellowships every body that makes a profession of religion, whether their lives measure up to God’s Word or not. And when anything is said against their sect-pens or anything written showing the abomination of desolation of sect-babylon, which the Word of God positively declares to be the habitation of devils, the cry “you need more charity”, is instantly raised, and the soul that dares, in the name of Jesus, to stand up for the right and declare the truth is looked upon with suspicion, as being a heretic; while if the true heretics were pointed out it would be those who reject the truth when it is given to them. Charity does not behave itself unseemly. ver. 5. Love does not lead us to extravagant and ridiculous actions; but every act is within the bounds of reason and according to God’s word. Because others are younger in years and more advanced in experience, the light of God does not prove that we should get angry and storm and kick around, when we can not make others bow to our whims and notions, that does not correspond to the Word God has given us to follow. Think of a minister getting angry when talked to On the subject of sanctification, and then go on with his profession and preaching, without any signs of repentance, or even a confession of the wrong he has done. Such a man needs to repent and cry to God for mercy before entering the pulpit again. But love does not create such ministers; all such men need to humble themselves. Love will make men gentle and will not cause them to behave unseemly nor to be easily provoked. Love does not even seek her own. This cannot be said of the sects, for they are constantly seeking to build themselves up even at the expense of others and the loss of precious souls. What sect is there that is not seeking to enlarge her borders or add new members, even if they have to take in unsaved people to make the show. But love has no sect pens to build; has no idols to look after and to be kept in constant fear of their being destroyed by some heretic. “For God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God and God in him.” And when God dwells in him all idols are severed, shore lines are cut, and nothing that we may hold dear is kept back, from the Lord, even to our lives. All are put aside for the Lord Jesus Christ. How inconsistent it is for any one who claims to be saved and to have given all up for the Lord, to be holding on to any of his idols whether it be his sect, tobacco, jewelry, fine clothes, money, etc., as if God did not mean just what he said. When speaking by the apostle James he says; “Wherefore, lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word which is able to save your souls.” Jas. 1:21 As peace and joy are some of the fruit which belongs to the soul that is filled with love, and “Love thinketh no evil” there is no inclination to evil surmising and thinking and imagining evil of our brethren, when they get an overflow of Gods blessing upon their souls and begin to shout, see Isa. 12:6. we do not draw down a long face and begin to cry, “Too much of lond profession here”, and endeavor to crush the dear ones down to our narrow ganged experience. If the expressive demonstration of joy and peace grates upon our feelings, it is safe to find bur way to the altar and not leave it until the Lord takes all the cross grain out of us and gives us a heavenly sweetness within; for the inner life of the soul certainly is not as God would have it. This, sweetness of love, will not lead us to put light for darkness and darkness for light; to call dry dead formal testimonies a live meeting, and a live Holy Ghost fire baptized meeting, formal and dead. Beloved let us love one another, for love is of God. 1 Jno. 4:7. Amen

THE GOSPEL.

—:o:—

WE are glad to see (hat here and there are a few of those who are endeavoring to proclaim THE GOSPEL, which we hope and pray that the living Gospel of Christ is advocated, and lived by those who are witnesses for the Truth. Christ’s Gospel is to heal the sick, cast out devils, cleanse the lepers, and raise the dead to life again. When? Now is the accepted time, and day of salvation. Christ said. The thief cometh not but to steal, destroy and kill, but I am come to give life and to give it more abundantly, and to give Eternal life. — Jno. 10:10. 28. But who preaches this living Gospel of Christ? Many preach about the truth: but who preaches the truth. Many talk about it, but who lives it? Too many say, and too few do. Not he that saith Lord, Lord shall enter but be that doeth the will of God shall be saved. If it was necessary to heal the sick and raise the dead to life, both spiritually and physically in Christ’s time, in order to save, heal and make the afflicted well that they might live and glorify God, is it not as essential now? Then why not be a true, faithful and living witness. Are we to be dead men or living epistles? Which? We are to declare the whole counsel of God, and to let our light shine before men. How can the dead obey this command? Or how can the dead occupy till Christ comes? The grave is not the Lord’s vinyard. Neither did Christ ever bid any man to go into the grave to labor. But He came to give triumph over the grave to the obedient, and to abolish death — 2nd Tim. 1:10. Did Christ fulfill His mission? He said. He finished the work God gave Him to do — Jno. 17:4. Then why is the gospel not obeyed. Where will ye stand in the great Judgement day, if ye obey not the gospel? James says. Faith without works is dead. And Christ not only believed in God; but worked also, not His work but He done the will of God. Even the words He spoke were not His but His Fathers. If then Christ is our example, why then do those who profess to be Christ’s, not do as He did? True some said of Him, who can forgive sins but God? And to day we hear more than this. People now say it is not necessary to do the works which Christ did, and that no one can do as He did. Notwithstanding Christ to the contrary. When He said. He that believeth (not about but) on me, the works I that do shall he do, also greater works — Jno. 14:12. But who does the works now? Are there no believers in Christ? It is true that in the last days perilous times shall come etc. And Christ said. When the Son of man cometh shall He find faith on the earth? According to this text; we must infer that the end is at hand, and who shall abide His coming? Reader art thou ready, and prepared to meet thy God.

GOD’S JUDGMENT MANIFEST.

—§o§—

A man, by the name of Jenkins, living in the vicinity of the Church of God in Gratiot Co. Mich., who was a spiritualist and heretic, hearing the saints talk about the power of God, raised his hand up and defied God to paralize the same. In about one week two of his children died and, in about two weeks that man began to be paralized and then to wither, and the self invoked corse extended all over his body. His flesh withered away until he was little more than a skeleton. This began about three years ago, and during the recent Gratiot camp meeting, the wretched man died, he having chosen a spiritualistic sinner to deliver an oration, on his funeral occasion. So it is fulfilled that is written, “The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God.”, and so they must learn to acknowledge Him beneath the rod of His judgments.

TAKE THIS TO THE LORD.

During the Beaverdam C. M. there came a burden on our heart, an apparent inspiration by the Spirit of the Lord, that there should be a home prepared for children of the ministers of the Gospel, who are poor, and some of whose companions are called to the Gospel field with their husbands, and such other destitute children as it might please God to take in and care for. Twenty or forty acres of good fruit land should be purchased, containing a suitable camp ground, buildings erected and enlarged as needed, and the Lord furnishes means. The children’s time should be wisely divided between healthful labor and useful study. Special attention should be given to the spiritual culture and development along with the intellectual The young minds should be stored with the Word of God, and their hearts with the love of Jesus. And as soon is possible a school should be annexed for young people to get an education, to the extent the Lord may provide and lead. It is a pitiful sight to see dear humble consecrated parents going forth, to rescue perishing souls, with the burden upon them of caring for three or four children, upon whose hearts there is a responsibility so weighty that they know of no place to leave them, and yet cannot do them justice in the field. A few days ago we spoke of this matter at St. Louis Mich. when a minister’s wife present, was led to weep and praise God. She remarked, that God had for a few years past burdened her soul for such an institution, and that she had talked it to many, but having met with no encouragement had nearly become discouraged. Her tears and expressed gratitude stirred our heart afresh, and we resolved to keep silent no longer. There are beautiful lakes within one and one half miles from here, where such a site could be located, or let it be any place the Lord may choose. For our own child’s sake, and those of the many dear brothers and sisters who are called into the work, we ask all men and women of faith in God, to join us in prayer that God may move some of His consecrated children, who are blessed with the means, to establish this benign institution. O what mighty results would evidently arise, from such a home. First, many workers could be out preaching the Gospel, and turning men to righteousness, who are kept at home much of the time to earn bread for their children; second, children kept under the control of such holy influences, associations, and instructions, would grow up mighty men and women for God. It should be a faith institution, where all the inmates should be taught to pray much to God to move hearts to send the necessaries of life. Who is ready, in the name of Jesus, to take hold of this matter? O take it to God in prayer. Perhaps God may move some one to sell out and devote all he has to the comfort of his and other children of the the saints. Amen!

A NEW TABERNACLE.

Kendall, Mich. Sep. 21, 1890.

Dear Ones in Jesus: — The Lord bless you all and keep you holy for Jesus sake.

For some time the Spirit of God has been moving upon my heart concerning the purchase of a new tabernacle here in west Mich. and I feel now like moving in the matter. The tabernacle is much needed in spreading the Gospel of Christ, in camp and grove meetings and in town and city work. And as one can doubtless be purchased cheaper now than in the spring and the means are more plenty, let us proceed at once to raise the money. Now let each one get on our knees before God and ask just what He will have us to give and obey His voice. Send the means to Bro. E. E. Byrum, Grand Junction Mich. and should there be more than is needed, the rest may be used in the Trumpet. Let it be attended to at once for Christ’s sake. I propose to do what I can in the name of Jesus.

Your humble saved Bro.

F. W. Schoolcraft.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

After the Gratiot Camp-meeting and a few days rest and writing, we began in the Saint’s meeting house near Merrill Mich. and continued meeting from Sep. 6th to the 10. The Lord did quite a good work in those few meetings in restoring some who had lost salvation, and edifying the Church. Bro. Wm. N. Smith and Co., and many of the brethren from various parts were with us. The Lord bless His people in that place.

From there we went to Wheeler and preached the glorious Gospel of God, two nights in the Wesleyan meeting house. The house was crowded, and many people heard the Word of God with much interest Some of the citizens wished we could remain longer. May the Lord save them. In this place lives our dearly beloved Bro. T. J. Cox with whose kind family we stayed during our short but precious sojourn in Wheeler. I pray God to visit that place with the Gospel and fire of God.

Next we came to St. Louis, which is quite a pleasant place of about 2800 population, about two thirds surrounded by a bend of Pine River. At this place Bro. and Sister Walters, Bro. and Sister Mitchel, and others from Lindsly Ohio, have located. They have been laboring with the people, and quite a number had come to the knowledge of the truth. But satan who is always ready to despoil the cause of Christ if possible, or set the professed children of God to devouring each other, had gained inroads. Some had been ensnared by a spirit of opposition to women preaching, which with other matters, had greatly hindered the Gospel of Christ. Such were convinced by the Spirit of God that they had been overthrown by the adversary, confessed, repented and after pardon went on to perfection, and nearly all got most gloriously free in their souls, and baptized and knit together in the pure love of God The meetings continued from Friday evening Sept. 12 to Sabbath eve, Sept. 21 The power of God was upon the meetings and souls came to the altar at about every invitation, as high as 12 at one time bowed down to seek God, in either pardon of entire sanctification; and the Lord was present to bless and save them all. Sinners were converted to God, and sanctified wholly, who previously had been filled with prejudice against this way, and now they are happy in Jesus and praising God that the truth they once opposed has set them free in Christ Jesus. O praise God for His wonderful works to the children of men! On the first Sabbath there were two buried with Christ in baptism, and on the last, Bro. Cox immersed ten more in the symbolic grave. All came up with the glory of God resting upon their souls, and the joy of the Lord moving their hearts and lips to praise the Lord. O how signally God does put His seal of approbation upon His willing and obedient children who love to follow the steps, and obey the commands of their Redeemer in these sacred things. How extremely blind and hard hearted a quakerized semi-skeptic must be who persists in his antichrist doctrine against the endorsement of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit at Jordan, and the outpouring of the Spirit to this day upon the true child of God who obeys the Word of God, in declaring his death to sin and all this world. From the clear river’s brink we re-assembled in the hall, and after a few moments devoted to testimony an invitation was given and several came to the altar and sought salvation. Then we had the great pleasure of obeying the precious commands of washing the saints feet, and the Lord’s supper with about 40 saints. Glory to Jesus! how our hearts were melted with love divine. During this solemn sevice, a young lady who had gone all through the meeting, and also the camp meeting without salvation, was melted down by the Spirit of God, an invitation was given, and she with two more came to the altar and soon found salvation After these testified boldly to the new found joys of the Lord, another woman came down with a penitent heart and also soon found peace to her troubled soul. She arose and testified that she was only at the meeting one night before, which was at the beginning, and she felt the power of God there so greatly that she knew she could not stand it in her sins. So she kept away until this ordinance occasion and behold she had now found Jesus and could go down to her house justified. Thus the meeting closed with salvation work to the last moment. Truly a great and marvelous work was done by the Lord, for which we, with all the angels in Heaven, praise Him. God bless His happy children in St. Louis! We expect to hear of the Lord adding frequently to His Church in St Louis such as shall be saved.

A kind Bro. Daniel Hansberger, who is a brotherinlaw to Bro. and Sister Walters, lives about 2 miles from town, who, though not yet made fully free in Christ, is a friend, to God’s saints, and a great lover of camp meetings: this Bro. has a very beautiful camp ground right on the bank of a spring run, and but a few rods from Pine River with excellent springs near by. We visited the same, and praised God for the beautiful shade and well watered spot, and that God had put it in the heart of the kind Bro. to offer this for the use of God’s holy people. Bro. Walters and ourself have a verbal agreement for the ground for ten years, and we hope to praise God on that ground next year the Lord willing. But the Gratiot C. M. should hereafter follow closely after the Bangor C. M. in order to make it practical for workers from the South to attend. This camp is right between St. Louis, and Alma, which together contain about 5000 population. St. Louis is crossed by the Toledo Ann Arbor and North Mich. R. R. and the Grand Rapids, St Louis and Saginaw branch of the Detroit Lansing and Northern. The camp is only one mile from the former Depot, and less than two from the other. So all things considered, this is a very practical and delightful location, and we expect it will be the future battle ground for the saints in central Mich. It is in fact very central for the saints, in Gratiot, Isabella and other Go’s, and we hope to see the glory of God rest upon the same. Amen!

Manchester, Iowa., Sept 23, 1890.

Dear Saints: — This morning find me well and saved with victory in my soul praise the Lord. We came here from the Hedrick C. M. In company, with mother Daniels, and sister Jessie Daniels, to assist in the work. We found the little Church here in good condition, and ready for the work. The next day, Bro. J. W. Byers and family came from their home in Ill. and we began meeting Sept. 4 that evening in the U. B. meeting house. The next day Bro’s C. Z. Lindley and M. V. Alderman came from Hedrick bringing the tabernacle with them, and it was pitched in the name of Jesus; then the battle was set in array against the enemy’s ranks. The work was hindered at first by the extreme prejudice against this way, but as the people began to read and enquire, they saw it was the truth. And many were convinced that God is in us of a truth. The Gospel was given to the people with power through the Holy Ghost, and found its way to their hearts. On Sunday the 14th there were 6 dear Saints followed Jesus in baptism and as they arose from the sacred ordinance, they were made happy in their obedience. The next evening we observed the ordinances of the Lord’s supper and washing of the Saint’s feet. O how blessed to obey our dear Savior, and how vividly the words were brought to our mind as our hearts were made to overflow with love and gratitude, “if ye know these things happy are ye if ye do them.” At the same meeting there were 7 healed of various diseases. One little boy who was nearly deaf and dumb was healed so that his father who was not saved then, but is now, took him before the congregation and testified that his little boy had talked more in the last two hours than He ever had heard him before in all his life. The other children, as their little brother came home, asked what is the matter with Max for he hears and talks? The mother is gloriously saved. During the meeting there were 13 cases of healing. 15 consecrations for either justification or sanctification all of which received the desire of their hearts. The Church was greatly built up and established in the deep things of God. O glory to God for His keeping power! Since last winter when Bros. Byers and Daniels, were here the dear Saints have been standing firm and were all ready and anxious for the work in the meeting, and now, since the number has been increased, we pray that their meetings which they hold twice a week may prove the means of spreading the light more and more in this wicked place. Some of the dear ones have extreme trials, but God is carrying them gently through them all. Last evening, according to appointment, some of the saints went to a place called Sand Creek, and the Lord used Bro. Byers in teaching the Word After which 2 came to the altar, one for justification the other for sanctification and each received the desire of their hearts. This morning one dear sister feeling it her duty followed the Lord down into the watery grave was buried by baptism to arise in newness of life. Then we met at the house of Bro. Haynes where the dear Lord healed 4 more of His children. Blessed be His dear name for He does not withh old anything from those who walk uprightly.

Your saved Bro. under the blood.

To all the Saints Greeting: — The Red Lyon camp meeting closed with a glorious victory on the Lord’s side. It was a heavenly feast from beginning to end. Souls were saved in nearly every meeting, and in some meetings the altar was crowded with seekers. There were, also, a great many healed of bodily afflictions by the power of God. We had, generally, a large attendance, especially on Lord’s day, and good order prevailed except on one division, when a few men, inspired of Satan and intoxicating drink, came and raised a disturbance, but were soon silenced, by the officers, and the work went on with sweeping victory. At the close of the meeting the ordinances of feet washing and Lord’s Supper were observed; about seventy saints particiapted. There were also el even saints who followed the Saviour, in the ordinance of baptism. The following workers were present: Bro. G. T, Clayton and wife from Canada, Bro. and sister Dillon, Bro’s. A. J. Kilpatrick and G. W. Howard and myself

Yours and Christ’s.

THE ASSEMBLY AT GENEVA.

was a joyful concourse of saints. Many clear ones gathered in the name of the Lord, and Jesus was in the midst. The Spirit of the Lord wrought His good work in quite a number of hearts; some were restored, believers sanctified, and many dear brothers and sisters advanced to new experiences in the way of holiness, the possession of gifts, etc. We had a few children’s meetings which were blessed in the salvation of some dear little ones, and they were much enjoyed by about all the little folks. Thank God for these means of grace to the children, yea, and they prove a sweet means of grace to all the saints. On Sabbath evening, we had a glorious ordinance meeting. O how blessed and happy are those who know and do the will of God. The dear little children were ready to take part in the memorials, and the joy that shone upon their faces, clearly manifested the blessing of God upon their little hearts. Bro, Wm. N. Smith and Co., Bro. Michels and Go., Bro. Grover and Co., Bro. J. Cole, and other ministerial servants and handmaidens, with our Co. were present and a glorious host of saints. On Sabbath afternoon, seventy two saints rapidly testified in the Spirit of God. We regretted much that the different services of the day cut the time so short, that only a part had time to speak for God. The Lord bless His holy saints. Amen!

Cedarvale, Kan. Sept 25, 1890.

After leaving St. James, brother Bolds and sister Mattie Bolds remained and held meeting a day or two with good success, there being a number of souls saved. The meeting at Carthage was a grand success. A number of souls consecrated some for I pardon others for sanctification; we had a precious ordinance meeting, and two followed the Lord in baptism. Friday evening the 19th, we left Carthage, in Co. with Bro. Lundy & sister Lena Shoffner, and are now doing battle for the Lord six miles south of Cedar Vale.

Turkey City, Pa.

Dear Saints: — From the Red Lyon C. M., with Bro’s. Wm. G. Schell and Howard we came to St. Petersburg, where we preached to quite a number of people from the porch of Bro. Jno. Morgan’s house, Saturday evening and over the Lords day. Monday morning we started for Fertigs, Venango Co. to hold a grove meeting; Arrived the same evening, but the rain fell so it was impossible for us to hold an out door meeting. A Bro. rented a Lutheran meeteng house in Centerville, which had been closed for seven years, without any preaching of any kind in it, (Babylon is fallen). Thursday evening we commenced to send the Word forth in the name of King Jesus. Many turned out with their hearts full of prejudice to hear the Truth. God wonderfully broke away the prejudice which was caused by men preaching, who never were sent. But we thank God there were a few souls edified, and many recieved the word. Amen!

Yours in Him.

Dear Trumpet Readers: — We commenced meeting in the name of the Lord, in a school house two miles west of Pleasant Hill, Sept. 9 and closed the 17th. On account of unpleasant weather the attendance was small for several evenings, but during the latter part of the meeting a large number came to hear the Word in its purity. Two were sanctified and we believe others will be saved in the future. we are gloriously saved just now. Hallelujah to God and the Lamb forever.

Bailey, Miss.

Dear Saints: — We have just closed a meeting at Rock Springs, Miss., which began Sept. 12 and lasted until the 21st. Bro’s A. Creal and W. W. Bradley were with us, also other zealous workers in the work of the Lord. The convicting and converting power of God was there, and His sanctifying grace poured out upon the people. The Lord added 28 more to the church here. Twenty eight were converted and twenty two recieved entire sanctification. Believers were greatly built up in the faith. Both old and young were made to shout, and praise God for His goodness. Twenty four followed the example of Jesus in baptism.

Your brother saved and wholly sanctified.

J. J. Jones.

Wymore, Neb. Sept. 12 1890.

Dear Saints: — May the dear Lord wonderfully bless you, in all spiritual blessings. May you be kept pure and free in your souls. Hallelujah! Well dear brethren we are glad to report another glorious victory, for God, in the name of Jesus. Meeting closed the 8th at Kenesaw, Neb. Many hearts and homes were made happy in Jesus love, filled with His glory made perfect in His love. O! Hallelujah! Our souls do rejoice with them. The meeting continued over two weeks with wonderful good order and interest. Many were deeply convicted who would not yield to the blessed Spirit. During the meeting more than a score consecrated for entire santification. Quite a number were justified from all their sins and 24 were buried with Christ in baptism. One of the number baptized and sanctified was dear Bro. Schleehauf, a young minister in the Evangelical sect He came out clear for God on the straight Bible line. Bro. Scheehauf was ordained elder of the Church and Bro. Whitmore and sister Kribel were ordained deacons. God has a glorious church in Kenesaw of about 20 who enjoy the experience of holiness. The last night was glorious. O the mighty power of God was upon us as we followed the Lord in washing the Saints’ feet. We are here in the name of Jesus, expect to open battle on the ranks of sin.

Dear brethren, pray for us.

We remain your humble servants of the Lord Jesus Christ, Saved from all sin, kept by the mighty power of God Amen!

SPIRITS AND DOCTRINES OF DEVILS.

—‡0‡—

IN the August No. of J. C. Fisher’s sheet, he tells the people that he was once an humble man, but became proud and puffed up, and then accuses some one with having been the cause of his downfall. Whoever that person was we think he or she did a good thing; because when men become proud and puffed up, they ought to fall: having already become a sinner, abasement is the only hope of their salvation. But the apostate is very careful not to confess his ungodly deeds, prefering to keep such of his subscribers as know not his character in ignorance. Anciently when men repented they “confessed and showed their deeds”, but this confesson is nothing else but a satanic device to deceive the ignorant. The same article in which appears the confession, is spotted with Ties and satanic deceptions. Under the blinding pretence of elevating the standard of “the sanctity of marriage” he teaches the loose and pernicious doctrine of freeloveism. He says “love is the Bible standard of unify”. The “bond of unity between husband and wife”. Where this love bond does not exist God has not done the joining. But “parties so united into a compound body are inseparable until death”. But for parties not so joined, he says, “the proper remedy is to get saved and live on the bible plain”. This last is goad advice, and it would have been well had he practised it. But in opposition to this good advice’ he says. “Might not parties contracting the first unscriptural marriage, if it he dissolved, legitimately enter into another scriptural union”. Quoting 1 Cor, 7:27. Art thou bound unto a wife? seek not to be loosed, art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife”. He adds, “Now this scripture applies to parties who have been scripturally joined; (namely with the bond of love) not to those who are unscripturally or unlawfully joined”.

These sayings all taken together contain about as wily compound of truth and falsehood, as the mess the Devil served up to Eve in the garden of Eden. He tells us that love is the Scriptural bond. And thus cautiously asks the question, “might not the parties contracting the first unscriptural marriage, enter into another, scriptural one.” That simply means this, whenever the devil puts it into a man’s heart to love some other man’s wife more than his own, then he is more scripturally joined to her than his own, and so he can ignore the former relation, and take the latter woman. And seek not to be loosed from a wife, he says only applies to such as are “scripturally joined,” that is to such as feel themselves united by the bond of love. That is opening just as broad a door of freeloveism as the devil wants. For satan knows very well that all who tenderly and devotedly love one another do not wish to be loosed; but his business is to destroy the pure bond of love out of the heart, and then men and women naturally wish to be loosed, and Fisher virtually says you may seek to be loosed, and join to some one else. Again he tells us, such as have been joined of God “are inseparable until death.” That is another positive falsehood. The devil himself knows very well that he has insinuated himself into many domestic circles where pure holy love has knit together man and wife, and where peace and conjugal happiness have reigned, and by his hellish seeds of discord he has destroyed the bond of union that God had entwined about their hearts, and blest with happy years. All the devil’s preachers are instructed of their father to keep him out of sight, to cover and hide away his evil works, and make the people believe he has become a right good kind of a fellow, and of course he would not break up a union that God has constituted. Suppose that society generally, the Church, and civil courts were to adopt the standard that this priest of confusion, who boasts that others have not the moral courage to lift the standard of marriage as high as he does. Suppose we adopt his standard, what then? Why every abominable hypocrite and sensual sinner who, after lulling what love he had for his wife by sexual sin, and then lasting after some other woman, has but to leave his lawful wife, which would furnish sufficient evidence that they had not been joined of God, for “such are inseparable till death.” Would not that be a pleasing law for all who are “neighing after their neighbor’s wife?” In fact the doctrine promulgated in that article, though cloaked, and disguised , is nothing but freeloveism. It virtually advocates the right to change wives whenever you are led by satan to conclude you love some one else better than your present wife, or to use his own words to me, when satan “transfers his love to some one else.” Yes J. C. Fisher’s own case well illustrates the fruits of his doctrine. When he had a degree of humility and grace, of which he speaks in his confession, he was frequently heard to say, and that before the congregation, that he “loved his wife as much as any man ever did.” Then according to his present teaching they were scripturally joined. But when plotting to get a bill, he told me that his “love had been transfered to another.” So he having lost love for his wife, by satan working in him procures an illegal divorce and married another man’s divorced wife. So he raises the standard so high? that men can change wives as often as the devil changes their love.

About one year ago, the apostate at Geneva Center meeting house, said how he would straighten cut the saints, have them put away judgment etc., if he got back to God. Confessed that he and his illegal wife were living in adultery and that he had no salvation; but they were going to separate. A brother told me he heard him make a similar confession at Willamstown Mich. and said they were going home to pack up and separate. This has proved to be a mere scheme to draw God’s children into his fellowship. Since that he writes a brother complaining that saints want him to leave his wife. O the subtile deception of the devil. If satan cannot decieve God’s elect any other way, he will have his transformed angels pretend to consecrate, confess, put away sin, etc., all an abominable sham to decieve unwary souls. O let every child of God keep their eyes on God and escape all these destructive snares of hell. We warn you in the name of Jesus to resist the devil in every form.

Look at the lies in that article, he says, “Two professed holiness, preachers discoursing on the marriage question at Stafford, Kan., taught that parties were joined of God in marriage by sexual intercourse without any amount of love.” This is a falsehood. We conversed with The two preachers alluded to, and they, being men of God, simply read the Word of God to the people, in Matt. 19:5, 6, Eph. 5:31 and elsewhere, where it is declared that when a man shall leave his father and mother and shall cleave to his wife, they twain shall be one flesh, let no man put asunder. Not One word is said about how much love they have for each other, or any love at all, but simply if they leave their parents and cleave together as man and wife, God pronounces them one flesh and forbids separation. It is all very true that God commands husbands to love their wives, and that love is the essential elemant of happiness in matrimony. But He nowhere says, their union is not valid or may be dissolved when love leaks out. Even “he that is joined to a harlot is one flesh.” These facts cannot be denied. The marriage vow cannot be set aside whenever the caprice of hell turns the heart to some other man or woman-

Concerning his allusions to cur tract and an article in the Trumpet, we would simply say that he has subverted and deceitfully misrepresented us, as only a man possessed with devils is capable of doing. No man of God can take his devilish sheet without offending God. If any child of God has helped the devils work by supporting any of those satanic sheets, may God help you to repent and stop them. Some think because they know they are of the devil, and can read their productions without any danger, they, through curiosity to read, can send them a little money to take the paper. As well might a man justify himself in going into a saloon and taking a few drinks of whiskey, because he can do so without getting drunk. The fact is, every spiritual child of God knows that such sheets as Low’s, Johnson’s, Fisher’s and others, are the devils organs, and by countenancing them you are serving the devil, and helping on his works. You can not suffer your name on their books as accepting their papers, even though you may burn them as fast as they come. You can not do it to the glory of God. Have no fellowship wish the unfruitful works of darkness, and stand far off from danger.

KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS.

Dearly Beloved Saints op Jesus: — I praise God for salvation in Jesus. Jesus has become my salvation. Praise His holy name. And I am glad that I am numbered with a people that keep His commandments. Glory be to Jesus. Christ said, John 15:10. “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Fathers commandments, and abide in His love.” As I understand God’s Word we cannot abide in Christ, and not keep His commandments; for He says, John 14:21, “He that hath my- commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him and will manifest myself to him.” There are so many to-day, who claim to be God’s children, and are fighting the truth. O how blind they are; they will acknowledge the commandments and say, where will I go to wash feet? My advice to all such is, get salvation and be adopted into the family of God, and then you will know where you ore. You will not be a stranger to God and His people. John says, 1 John 2:4, “He that sayeth I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is altar, and the truth is not in him.” O praise God forever! “Hereby we the (the saints of God) do know that we love Him. because we keep His commandments.” 1 John 5:3. “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments: and His commandments are not grievous.” So there is no excuse for the poor blind sectarians: if they will get salvation they will know their place, in the body of Christ, and can keep the ordinances, as God delivered them unto us. Praise His holy name. I am saved by the blood of Jesus and wonderfully kept from all of the snares of the Devil.

Your sister in Christ.

Lucy Cobb.

Correspondence

16 Maine st. Asheville; N. C. Sept. 15 ’90

Dearly Beloved Saints: — And may the love of our Lord Jesus Christ abound more and more in you all Amen. We are here to fight the battles of King Jesus and ask an interest in the prayers of everyone of God’s saints, for the advancement of His cause through us. None but God can provide a way of successfully approaching the people on the subject of salvation. We are but two here, and therefore ask a special interest in your prayers, that we may do a good work. Indeed we are thankful to know that the promise is, “Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Also to know that, “The prayers of a righteous man availeth much.” Yes we are here alone, and while the sectarians go to the respective places of confused worship, we read God’s Word and look to Jesus for His blessings, and they never fail to come. And now God has put it into our hearts to ask the Trumpet office for a number of papers of each issue; say, twenty or twenty five for which we will pay, God willing. These papers are to be distributed among the poor and other classes as God may lead. We have tried this method for two Sabbaths, and today we received two new subscribers as a result of our labor. We gladly receive and read the Trumpet. It does our souls good to read the testimonies of the saved ones.

Yours of the brotherhood of Jesus Christ, saved and sanctified and kept by the power of God.

Dear Saints: — Today finds me sweetly saved in Jesus, with complete victory in my soul. I am so glad that I have been made alive in Christ I am dead to this world and all its pleasures, and my life is hid with Christ in God. This way is so narrow that none but the redeemed can walk therein. The enemy does what he can to throw his fiery darts at me, but I have found a hiding place in Christ where the wicked one toucheth me not. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

Dear Saints: — I feel that it would be to the glory of God for me to write my testimony. I am saved and kept by the power of God ready to be revealed at the last time. Dear Trumpet Readers: — We feel it would be to the glory of God to give in our testimony. We can say to the glory of God that we are walking in the glorious evening light, saved from sin and uncleanness, ready to do the will of God in in things, God has wonderfully saved us, soul and body, and we give Him all the honor. Satan is wonderfully arrayed against us here. We can see plainly that God has withdrawn His Spirit from many of the most prominent members of the sect here because of rejecting the true Gospel. We feel we need the prayers of all the saints, that we may be kept humble and entirely in the Lord’s hands, that much good may yet be done in the name of the Lord. We would be glad if some of God’s holy ministers could stop here at some time, and preach to the people.

Dear Brethren: — I do praise God this evening for a full and free salvation that saves me from all sin, and sanctifies us and makes us fit subjects for Heaven. I was a member of the U. B. sect for about 30 years. About two years ago I began to see that all was not right. I came out from among them, and during the meeting held at Mahaska, Kans. I was led out into the true light of God. There I made a full consecration to God, who is able to keep me daily from all sin. Pray for me that I may ever be faithful in the work of the Lord.

OBITUARY.

Beaver Dam, Ind.

Sister Cora Vianna Widner; Daughter of John & Hitha Widner; Died Aug. 3 1890. She was born May the 23 1875 aged 15 years 2 months and 10 days She bore her long suffering very patiently, the morning before her death, she called her parents and friends to her bed side and told them she was going to go, and that they should meet her in heaven. She also made choice of her burial place, and then prayed that Jesus would quickly come, and take her to that heavenly home.

She raised her hand and passed away —
To that bright home of endless day;
The angels bore her spirit there,
To rest forever free from care.

A lingering smile was on her face —
An emblem true of God’s embrace;
And victory o’er the grave is won
When all the “sting” of sin is gone.

Immortal vision meets the eye,
And heaven’s shining host draws nigh:
The soul from mortal ties is riven
And soars away from earth to heaven.

She bore her time of suffering here,
With joyful heart, and free from fear:
She told her friends the time had come,
For her to see that brighter home.

Funeral services by Bro. David Leininger. God blessed greatly in the administration of His Word, in this appointment of His providence. May it be a means of grace to her dear friends May her tender admonitions linger ever in their hearts as a warning for them to be saved.

TRUST IN GOD.

—‡@‡—

Now we find many, who seem to be all given up to do God’s will, but when severe trials come, they fail to trust God. Oh, dear ones it means so much to trust God in all things. We find that when our old forefathers obeyed God and kept in His order, they never failed to win a battle, when the Lord commanded them to go forth; but if they disobeyed the voice of God, we find they met with a failure. So unless we obey God’s word and keep His commandments, we must not expect to receive the promises laid down therein; for they are for them that prove faithful; And to prove faithful we must love and trust Him in all things; for He says in Jno. 14:23 “If a man love me he will keep my words.” And in ver. 24, “He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings.” Now may God help each one, that claims to be a saint of the living God, prove to the world that they love and trust Him. To do this we must have faith to believe that he will fulfill every promise if we do our part. “With out faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is and is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.” Heb. 11:6.

Let us notice a few things that have been accomplished by trusting God. First let us turn to first Sam. 17 and see what was accomplished by David when the armies of Israel and the Philistines were set in array at Shochob, how God delivered the champion of the Philistines unto David, so that he slew him, when all the armies of Israel fled before him, though David was but a youth. We find, in the 37th ver., as he was conversing with Saul, his trust was in God; for be says, “The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the Lion and out of the paw of the Bear, He will deliver me out of the hand of the Philistine.”

Now we will turn to Joshua 6th. chap. and there we find Jericho was a city shut up because of the children of Israel, so that none went out and none came in; but God promised to give the city and all the mighty men to Joshua. But we find that God told him just how he must take the city because he says, “And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days. And seven preists shall bear before the Ark seven trumpets of rams horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets. And it shall come to pass, that when they make along blast with the rams’ horns, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout: and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.” By doing as God commanded them, when the people gave the shout the wall fell flat to the ground, and they took the city. It was not the shouting or blowing of the trumpets, that caused the wall to fall, no more than washing in the pool of Siloam gave sight to the blind man only, as both obeyed the command of the Lord: for if the people of Israel had refused on the seventh day to go around the city seven times, and only went six times, no doubt, they would not have taken the city; neither do we think, if the blind man had refused to go and wash in in the pool, that he would have received his sight; but we find that both were accomplished by trusting and obeying the voice of God. Read John 9:7.

And again we find in Daniel chap. 3, that when Shadrach Meshach and Abednego were cast into the fiery furnace, because they would not obey the voice of man but put their trust in the God of Heaven and Earth, that they received no harm; neither did Daniel when thrust into the den of lions, for his trust still remained in God, who provideth for all who love and trust Him. Praise His holy name.

Turn to 1 Kings 18th. chap., and see what was accomplished when there remained but one prophet of the Lord. “And EIijah came unto all the people and said, how long halt ye between two opinions? If the Lord be God follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the Lord; but baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men. Let them therefore give us two bullocks: and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under And call ye on the name of your gods: and I will call on the name of the Lord: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.” but we find that by all their cries, and even though they cut themselves with knives and lancets, they got no answer, for their trust was not in the living God. But when Elijah, who put his trust in the God of Heaven, took twelve ston6es, according to the number of tribes of the sons of Jacob, and laid the offering thereon, and even allowed them to pour water upon it and on the wood, and dig a trench about it and fill that with water, that when Elijah called upon God that the people might be convinced who they should serve, fire came down from Heaven and comsumed the burnt sacrifice, the wood, the stone and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. And when the people saw how that God answered Elijah they fell on their faces and acknowledged the Lord, as the true God. So now we find that by one man trusting and obeying God, many were brought from the error of Baal unto God. So we find all down through the new Testament that when poor frail men put their whole trust in God and obeyed Him in all things, that many miracles were wrought; the prison doors were opened; the lame walked; the blind received sight; the deaf were made to hear the sick, restored to health; and even the dead were raised to life through the name of Jesus Christ. But still we find many, who claim to believe on God and claim to to be God’s children, that say all these miracles were only given to the apostles and stopped when they died. But let us turn to Mark l6:15-18, and see what Christ said to the apostles, “And he (Christ) said unto them, Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name they shall cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” So we see that these promises are only to those who believe and trust God. If we love God we will not be afraid to trust and obey Him And we find that Christ’s Word takes in all the New Testament. Scriptures. Now let us notice some of the Word in James 5:13-15, “Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.” Still we find some, who claim to be Gods holy people, who when oppressed by sickness, fail to obey this commandment and trust on the promise; but rush for the physician and trust in the art of man instead of God, who healeth all our diseases, and cares for all our wants. But let us turn to 2nd Chron. 16:12-13, and see what become of one who, when diseased, sought not the Lord as physician; and Asa, in the thirty and ninth year of his reign, was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great; yet in his disease he sought not the Lord, but physicians: and Asa slept with his fathers and died in the one and fortieth year of his reign. Now may God help all His saints to obey and trust Him, and not go into the wilderness, and wander about as did the children of Israel, when they refused to obey Moses, the servant of God; but worshipped the golden calf made by the art of man. Now may each one realize where they stand, and know that the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart” 1 Sam. 1:6- 7, and cannot be deceived.

Brothers and sisters let each of us live so as to exemplify the life of Christ; that sinners may be compelled to say, of a truth our trust is in God, and we are living for God and Him alone.

From your saved Bro. ever trusting in God who will bring all, who trust and obey Him, out more than conqueror. Praise His name.

THE CHRIST

THE INTERESTING RELIC OF A ST. LOUIS LADY, CONTAINING A DESCRIPTION OF CHRIST.

—:o:—

There is in possession of Mrs. M. F. Fife, a long resident of St. Louis, formerly of Harrodsburg, Ky., a very old family relic, brought from England by an ancestor on her mother’s side, Col. Robert Davis, in the early colonial times, when Virginia was settled by the English. It is a description of the personal appearance of our Saviour, and is the one from which the most of the copies in the city were taken. It was printed on satin, once white now yellow and discolored with age and falling to pieces in some places. The glass over it, unfortunately broken some weeks ago, notwithstanding the care taken to preserve it, showed the early time in which it was made, as also does the primitive wooden frame, stained black. All test the antiquity of the relic. The following is the inscription: “A description of the person of Jesus Christ as it was found in an acient manuscript sent by Publius Lutulns, President of Judea, to the senate of Rome.

“There lives at this time in Judea a man of singular character, whose name is Jesus Christ. The barbarians esteem him a prophet, but his followers adore him as the immediate offspring of the immortal God. He is endowed with such unparalleled virtue as to call back the dead from their graves, and to heal every kind of disease with a word or touch. His person is tall and elegantly shaped. His aspect amiable and reverend. His hair flows in those beautiful shades which no united colors can match, falling into graceful curls below his ears, agreeably couching on his shoulders and parting on the crown of his head like the head-dress of the sect of the Nazarites. His forehead is smooth and large, his cheeks without spot save that of a lovely red; his nose and month are of an exquisite symmetry; his beard is thick and suitable to the hair of his head, reaching below his chin and parted in the middle like a fork; his eyes are bright, clear and serene; he rebukes with majesty, councils with mildness and invites with the most tender and persuasive language. His whole address, whether in words or deed, being elegant, gravely and strictly characteristic of so exalted a being. No man has seen him laugh, but the whole world behold him weep frequently, and so persuasive are his tears that the multitude cannot withhold their tears from joining in sympathy with him. He is very modest temperate and wise. It short, whatever this phenomenon may turn out in the end, he seems at present a man for excellent beauty and divine perfections every way surpassing the children of men.”

NOTE.

We lake this note from a secular paper. This description of Jesus, purporting to have been written in the time when the holy man walked with men on the earth in the body, must inspire devout readers with admirations of the Christ of the Bible. But it only portrays to us the Christ of Galilee, the humble Christ of the first century. Too many only know a historic Christ who once lived incarnate on earth. Some speak of Christ as they would of any other character of the past who has left his name on the pages of history for us to see and admire. It is true that Christ is a historic character, His history does not close at the tomb as that of other great men, nor was its last page written when the cloud received Him out of sight, but the history of the mighty to save continues down through the ages, yea, record of His doings on earth, if it were all written would surpass the biography of all men that have been written put together. Truly the world would not contain the book as John has said.

But passing from the Christ incarnate, and the same Christ whose mighty sceptre has shaken the nations and touched with comfort the heart of millions who wept their sins and called upon his name in the past centuries, we would ask you dear reader, do you know the Christ of the nineteenth century? The Almighty Redeemer who has passed down the centuries to our own day, and who, in all His past march of triumph and mercy, and who, notwithstanding His holy name and character suffered the wicked jeers and insults of nearly 1900 years of our presumptous and ungodly race, still appears among men the embodiment of love, the friend of humanity, and the savior of all men that come to God by Him. Having lost nothing of all that tenderness and compassion that moved His eyes to tears for the suffering, and His great heart to pity and pardon the guilty penitent. Do you know the christ that has come down to our remote end of time with the same unbounded power to sanctify and heal us soul and body, and preserve us blameless in His sight? Would you like to behold the above described ancient portrait of the lovely Son of God? Behold you can have His picture taken afresh right in your own heart. His own image adorned with al the beautiful gems of His moral attributes.

The first diciples know Christ in the flesh and walked with Him here or earth; but after the day of pentecost they fully knew Him in the spirit, and this they found much more precious and profitable. “Wherefore,” said the apostle Paul, “henceforth know we no man after the flesh, yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we Him no more,” namely, after the flesh. 2 Cor. 5:16.

Praise God! We need not be desirous of the privilege of walking with Christ as His disciples did in Judea, for we have the more exalted privilege of sitting with Christ in heavenly places, and walking with Him in the glory of His spirit If His personal presence was beautiful and majestic as the above describes, His holy and spiritual presence is yet more precious. O let us see to it that, we “all come in the unity of the faith, of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” Eph. 4:13.

O let us serve and glorify the Christ of the present truth. Seek not to behold His physical image, but with open face, beholding in a glass the glory of the Lord, be changed into the same image, and then show forth the holy life and character on earth. Amen!

Correspondence.

—:o:—

Elmore, O. Sept. 7, 1890.

Dear Readers of the Trumpet: — I feel it would be to the glory of God to write what He has done for my soul. Nearly eight years ago I was made to see my lost condition as a sinner. The Spirit of the Lord strove with me until I was willing to repent: how willing and how just he was lo forgive my sins. Oh! I never can forget that day when Jesus washed my sins away. Since that time the Lord has wonderfully led me. Glory to His name! After I was converted I joined the M. E. denomination and am sorry to say, that I never heard true holiness preached, in all the time I was in there. But God always had a people, and always will; and it was my privilege to meet the real children of God; and in meeting with these people, I was convicted for holiness, and began seeking for it. I saw these people had a better experience than I had; I also saw that they were a plain people; their bodies were not adorned with the foolish fashions as mine was. I thought, God looks at the heart and not what we put on; and then I consecrated to God as best I could, and gave up all that I knew God wanted me to give up. Well I received more from God, and the Lord wonderfully blessed me, and I am safe to say used me as an instrument in His hands. And in this time I laid ofl a great many things, which I saw were not pleasing to God. And the more I was willing to lay off the more I enjoyed the presence of our blessed Lord and Master. What peace and joy fills the hearts of these who are obedient unto God. The Spirit of God will lead us into all truth, and I know the Spirit of God has led me. Praise His holy name. It will soon be two years since the Lord led me out of the M. E. sect. I saw the people, professing to be the children of God, indulging in things that were ungodly, and those who claimed to be the ministers of God, taking part in, and upholding those things which the Spirit of God revealed to me were not right. And hearing the Evening Light preached, I obeyed the Word of God and today I am standing alone with Christ, having complete victory in my soul over all that is not of God. Glory to His name forever and forever. I can say, to the glory of God, since the 19 th day of Aug. 1890, I have had perfect peace in my soul. The Lord opened the way for me to attend camp meeting at Portage, O. The Spirit and the Word of God showed me just where I was: there was pride in my heart; and four years ago I consented to have my life insured in the Masonic association, and the Lord wanted me. out of that Glory to God! He, who doeth all things well, has delivered me. I have sold out my right and title to the world; and I just feel as though I had nothing I can call my own. And while settling up accounts with God, I saw the lend’ Jeremiah, 11:5, speaks of this land flowing with milk and honey; I not only saw it, but praise the name of Jesus,

I entered this land. I found it to be a glorious way. I can say, I am dead to this world and alive unto God. With Paul I can say, “Not I that live but Christ that liveth in me.” What the people should know, first is the forgivness of sins and then be sanctified. They will then see the evil in sectism as it is, and not until then. How thank God for His people who to-day are out in this world preaching the everlasting Gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, fearless of what men may say or do. O I pray God He may keep each of His little ones hid away with Christ. O as I look around and see the wickedness, that does abound, I feel like sitting continually at the feet of Jesus and learning more and more, so that I may be a real light to this world. Oh I praise God to-day that I am standing upon the Word of God; His Spirit as my teacher; the Word as my guide. I am sanctified,made pure and holy by the blood of the Lamb.

Amen and amen.

Your saved sister.

Dear Saints: — As I have been reading the testimonies of the saved people, my soul rejoices to hear so many testifying for Jesus, and giving God glory for what He has done for them. Praise His holy name for ever!

Three years ago I presented my body a living sacrifice unto God, and received the gift of the Holy Ghost which is the sanctifying power. And also I had the Heart disease for several years and was growing worse, until I give myself up to Jesus and He healed me soul and body. He is my physician in time of sickness and my counsellor in time if trouble. “Just a little talk with Jesus makes it all right.” It is a blessing to trust God for every thing. This morning I can testily that there is not a cloud be tween me and the glory world. “All things work together for good to them that love God.” It has been but a few week’s since the Trumpet found its way to me; I had heard of the paper but was warned against it as a false paper but when I read it I found the report was false.

Dear Trumpet Readers: — I am praising God for salvation full and complete, and am reigning in one Christ Jesus, and kept by the power of God, rejoicing evermore; in all things giving thanks. God is with ns at all times, and we love to do His will as He makes it known unto ns. Last winter while Bro. Smith and Co. were holding meetings here, the Lord saved me out of babylon confusion, and from all the filth of the flesh, and cleansed me from the use of tobacco. I had used tobacco ever since I was 8 years of age. The Lord keeps us by His power.

Yours in the love of Jesus.

Dear Saints: — I praise Him to day for the blessed Evening Light, and for the great deliverance that He has wrought in my soul. He has delivered me from the mingled night of sin, and I am living in the light of God’s truth. God is helping me by His Spirit to preach His word in its purity; and is blessing His word in the salvation of precious souls. We just closed a meeting at Corning Mo. where thirty five souls were saved. I want all the saints to pray for the work in this part of the vineyard. I find it pays to be true to God and walk in the light of His word.

Yours in Jesus.
