FASHION, A TYRANT GODDESS.

Talk not of Juggernaut, whose murderous wheel
Crushes its rotaries with an iron heel
Talk not of Moloch, to appease whose ire
Mothers submit their darlings to the fire.
Talk not of Ganges, in whose cruel wave
The babes of India find a watery grave.
Talk not of idolatrous gods, whose evil
Has plainly shown their inception from the devil.
Behold the masterpiece of all hell’s passion,
Behold the tyrant goddess men call Fashion.
With one fell stroke Juggernaut ends his pain,
Once in the arms of Moloch, nor burn again.
Once let the Ganges smother o’er the breath,
And there’s an end to torture and to death;
But in one long, cruel process Fashion reigns,
And binds her votaries with continuous chains,
When slavery held our South in cruel woes,
From birth to death the slaves was doomed to
The system, with subordinating pain, [blows.
Lowered the height of manhood, sered the brain;
But still the soul could rise from its cruel thrall,
And find its God, and so survive it all.
But Fashion, with a more insinuous art,
Binds not the body only, but the heart;
Binds not the brain alone, but in control
Holds all the tides that thrill the inmost soul,
Degrades and dwarfs the image of God in men,
And traces life with death’s unyielding pen.
See yonder child, a creature gay and fair,
As free as some sweet bird that wings the air.
With health aglow on check, and brow, and heart
What need hath she of aught of Fashion’s art?
Flitting with tides of sunshine and of dew,
Like some pure bud, her purfume follows you.
Her very being ever seems to raise
Glory to him who made her for his praise.
But, lo! behold with fascinating mein
Cometh dread Fashion, like a witching queen.
She cannot ’dure to let the maid fulfill
The glorious dictates of her Maker,s will
But holds the bird, till, round her supple waist,
An iron corset shape is tightly laced;
The heart heats low; the lungs breathe wearily;
The bloom fades dull, and ceases all the glee;
And, lo! the doomed maiden goes to be
The slave of Fashion, and her votary.
O’er all the land, behold the withering women [ming!
Steel-bound, and corded round with chains of trim-
But, oh, good women, pray unloose your bands,
And lift to heaven your heads, and hearts, and hand!
Be free, be free, in Heaven’s strength and might
And fit yourselves to love and love aright.
For when God’s love’s instilled within the heart.
All love of pride and Fashion will depart;
And where His Spirit dwells and reigns supreme.
His love and glory is the only theme
Then let us leave the goddess of this world,
And in the heart Christ’s banner be unfurled.

THE WAY OF HOLINESS.

IN this article we will consider holiness as a way, as a line of march, and the means of progress therein.
“And a highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be ended the way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men though tools, shall not err therein. No lion shall he there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be there; but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.” — Isa. 35:8—10.
The above text seems to portray the two scriptural plains of holiness. Namely: holiness begun in regeneration, and perfected in entire sanctification. It also exactly corresponds with the words of the Apostle Paul. “And yet show I unto you a more excellent way.” — 1 Cor. 12:31. The comparative degree presupposes the positive. There cannot be a more excellent way without there first be an excellent way. The way of salvation is excellent in regeneration, but the more excellent way is the same way at the advanced point of perfect holiness, or perfect love as described in 1 Cor. 13.
So the Prophet speaks of a “high way,” which rises still higher to “a way, and it. shall be called the way of holiness.” The latter being more excellent because it is the perfecting grace of God.
This way is God’s own way. “As for God, His way is perfect.” — Psa. 18:30. “Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from Thy way.” — Psa. 44:18. “It is God that maketh my way perfect.” — Psa. 18:32. “Yea the Lord shall give that which is good, * * * Righteousness shall go before Him; and shall set us in the way of His steps.” God makes our way perfect by setting us in the way of His steps.” So on this high way of holiness, all must walk even as Christ walked. “They also do no iniquity: they walk in His ways.” — Psa. 110:3. “Tea they shall sing in the ways of the Lord: for great is the glory of the Lord.” It is called “the way of truth,” “the way of peace,” “the way of righteousness.”
It is a plain way. “The way of a slothful man is as a hedge of thorns: but the way of the righteous is made plain.” — Prov. 15:19. Therefore, “wayfaring men, though fools shall not err therein.” It is a fact that until men get some wrong element in their hearts, they are apt to err in their minds. It does not require much intellectual brilliancy to keep out of error and false doctrine, but simply an honest, pure, humble spirit, and sincere heart.
God does not lead His children into conflicting ways: for thus saith the Lord, “I will give them one heart and one way.” — Jer. 32:39. So all the multitude of conflicting sect ways God never gave the children of men. For He only gives them one way, and by His transforming grace, fashions their hearts alike,” to walk in His one way.
“The slothful man saith, there is a lion in the way.” — Prov. 26:13.
Yes, so long as men are careless, sleepy, and too wreckless to seek and serve God, they are full of excuses, great obstructions mount up before them, they see a dreadful lion in the way. But after all, no lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there.” For it “is a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the Vulture’s eye hath not seen; the lion’s whelp hath not traveled it, nor the fierce lion passed by it.” — Job. 28:7, 8.
What do these scriptures mean? What kind of lions, and vultures, and ravenous beasts cannot see nor pass over this way? Simply men and women who are of impure and ravenous dispositions. “The animal man,” the unclean vulture eye, can never see the pure path of holiness. Such will always “deny the power of God” to cleanse and keep free from sin. But the humble shall hear thereof and be glad, the sincere, who hunger and thirst after righteousness, shall be able by faith to see the high way, and enter upon it through the blood of Christ, and “the redeemed shall walk there.” “And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads.” Holiness is the only route from Babylon back to Zion, God’s Church. And no person that lives in a sect of babylon, can be wholly sanctified, and walk in holiness, and yet remain in her; because the way of holiness leads back to Zion, and out of babylon.
Holiness, we see, is a way as well as a state: a line of progress, a road to travel in, as well as a rock to stand upon. The way of holiness has reference to the advancement, or progress we must make after we are in the light. Many confessors of holiness seem not to have learned this idea of the Divine life. They talk much of an experience once received, whereas they should be praising God for more and more glorious revelations of Him in them from time to time.
WHAT ELEMENT OF HOLINESS IS UNPROGRESIVE?
In Heb. 10:14, holiness, or perfection is spoken of as not susceptable of further improvements. “For by one offering He hath perfected forever them that are sanctified.” Conybear and Howsons translation renders it thus, “For by one offering He hath perfected forever the purification of them that are sanctified.” Though this rendering is more full than the bare text expresses it, is clearly implied in the context. Perfect purity is the theme of the epistle. In 6:1, the order is, “go on unto perfection.” Perfection in the Gospel is contrasted with the inability of the law to make perfect. “If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priest-hood, what farther need was there that another priest (Christ) should rise?” 7:11. “For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope (Christ) did.” — 7:19. “Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost, that come unto God by Him 7:25. The perfection of His sacrifice are again contrasted with the imperfections of the law in 9:11—14. — “But Christ being come a high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but of His own blood He entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh; how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”
It is clearly seen here that the manner in which Christ, by the one offering of His body, and the shedding of His blood, makes us perfect, is by perfect purification of our entire being. This is clearly implied by the declaration that He perfects us by sanctification. For that is wrought through His blood, see Heb. 33:12. “And the blood of Jesus Christ God’s Son, cleanses us from all sin, 1 John 1:7, from all unrighteousness, verse 9. Then we may truly say that the one unprogressive work of holiness, sanctification, or perfection is that of entire purification. In the second work of grace that is instantaneously wrought, and that forever. Not that it cannot be forfeited, but if maintained is perfected forever. “The worshipers once purged have no more conscience of sin.” The Soul body and Spirit, is made absolutely free from all sin, filthiness and unrighteousness. — 2 Cor. 7:1; 1 Thess. 5:23, 24. Pure as the Son of God is pure. — 1 John 3:3. And being absolutely pure, and free from all sin and moral pollution, by the all sweeping application of the blood of Christ, we can never become more so in this world and through all eternity in the world to come. Hence there is no progress that can be made in the purity of the wholly sanctified. O praise God for this fact! Since purity of heart is the great condition of entering Heaven, and seeing God in peace, how thankful we are that we can have that perfectly wrought now and here, soon after pardon, and can therefore be in a perfect state all our life, without spot, and blameless, ready for the revelation of Christ at any moment. This is the finished state in which “we are kept by the power of God, through faith ready to be revealed in the last time.” Yea, not only ready, but joyfully “looking for and hastening unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Amen!
Some points in which Holiness is Progressive.
We have seen that our nature and entire being is made perfectly pure in the instant of entire sanctification, and that we can never become more pure within. But we can improve in the outward manifestation of inward purity. After the heart is perfectly pure, it usually requires some time for the outward life to cast off all the force of former habits. Hence we may improve in the outward fruits of holiness. This is an important point in the Christian life. We should watch carefully, and detect every item in our conversation and deportment, that does not flow from, and is not in harmony with the Holy Spirit, who dwells within, but is a relic of the former life, brought over by the force of habit. A boisterous unbecoming laugh, saying things you do not mean, all lightness in actions and talk, etc., and every thing contrary to the holiness of Christ, must be put away. Persons who have been much given to lightness and foolishness, find some tendency about them to do these things after they are saved. And if they are not attentive enough to the protests of the Spirit against them, but continue to indulge the same, they surely grieve Him, and ere long drive Him out of their heart This pernicious plague never wholly left the life of J. C. Fisher. Foolish talking, and downright nonsense more or less cropped out all along, hence he was not fit to represent this holy work, and necessarily had to fall, because he would not purge himself. If ever wholly sanctified, he permitted that life to smother out beneath the inconsistencies carried along from Egypt. Let every one that nameth the name of of the Lord depart from every habit acquired in sin, and in babylon, and let your conversation be as becometh holiness. We know some good men, who have not wholly purged themselves from the habit of jesting with unconverted young folks, and we are sorry to say that we have not always done our duty in admonishing them when we have been witness to the same. But in more or less, all the outward walk, and conversation of the wholly sanctified there can and should be advancement, and improvement, pruning and casting away of little inconsistencies, and thus learn more and more how to conform the outer life to the inner holiness. While therefore inward cleansing of our nature is an instantaneous, and forever finishied work of Grace, its outward manifestation is progressive.
Again, all the Christian graces are really planted in the soul by regeneration, their opposites removed in entire sanctification, and their development, and enlargement continues on through life. The new birth begets humility, meekness, kindness, charity, benevolence, sympathy, love, pity, gentleness, longsuffering, and all the rest of the beautiful clusters of graces, in our heart. But the opposites exist in the old man, or inbred evil nature, and these two classes of elements are against each other. Hence the necessity of converted people putting off the old man. Eph. 4:21. When this second work is wrought, all these inborn evil elements are destroyed and the new life is left unencumbered. Both the implanting of the new life, and the destruction of the old are instantaneous and unprogressive works. But after that comes the growth and everlasting development of the graces.
“Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And besides this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; and to knowledge, temperance; and to temperance, patience; and to patience, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, charity. For it these be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. — 2 Pet. 3:4-8.
Having faith we can “add to our faith virtue,” and having virtue, we can add “to virtue knowledge,” and so on through the whole list.
The normal state of a sanctified heart is this, “ye may be perfect entire wanting nothing.” — James 1:4. And yet the pure in heart, come to points in their march on the way of holiness, when they do experience a lack, and inward vacuum, and longing for something beyond their present attainment. At this junction satan may be ready to whisper, “you have lost sanctification,” and thus try to cause you to cast away your confidence. And some, not understanding the way of holiness nor the devices of satan draw back, instead of going forward. While there is such a tiling as gradual growth in grace, it is true that our divine elevations in the divine life are chiefly by epochs. Like the canal, we keep pretty much on one level for some distance, and then, as the boat is run into a lock, and the gates are closed behind it, and the flood gates opened before, the boat is elevated, and after a- short delay in the operation of locking up, it moves on again on a higher plain, until it reaches another place of elevation by a similar lock. So we must be run into a lock occasionly. We feel a lack of freedom, and spiritual sea room; cold dark walls seem to beset us all around, progress seems arrested, and the soul seems dissatisfied, and men wonder why thus closed in in their experience, by such an impassable wall. But the straightened place the soul has got into, moves to earnest prayers until the fllood gates of heaven open before us, and the soul moves on again on the higher plain of a new experience. So when you feel a want in your soul do not allow the devil to tempt you that you have lost salvation. No! but look diligently to God, until you find what point of advancement He wants you to make. He would add to you more love, meekness, humility, or some thing else. Or He wishes yon to grasp, and use to His glory, some one of the Spiritual gifts. And if you see wherein your soul must take a higher plain of usefulness, go to God, in secret, bow and raise your hands toward heaven, confess the wants of which you are convicted, ask God to fill the want, believe you do receive, and confess the additional gift or measure of grace. And should you not be able clearly to discern what point God would have you to lock up on, confess the want, and believe God fills the same whatever it may be, and as sure as you do believe firmly that God “supplies all your needs through His riches in glory by Christ Jesus,” you will realize the fact, and the soul will move on again in the glorious conciousness of Scriptural fulness. “Perfect entire wanting nothing.”
O let all the saints remember that holiness is a way, and in much secret prayer, and earnest supplication to God, and a life of perfect obedience in all things, press toward the mark for the price of the high calling of God. Sink deeper in humility, meekness, and gentleness, and rise higher in meditation; faith, power, and praise to God. And above all seek to abound more in the good fruits of holiness. And be sure to go forward by faith in God. “For the just shall live by faith,” and “fight the fight of faith,” charging onward, and upward, till the glorious crown of life is received.

HYGIENE FROM A BIBLE STANDPOINT.

Dear Saints: — May the Lord bless you with all wisdom and spiritual understanding in all things. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and let him that glorieth glory in this that he understandeth what the will of the Lord is. Amen! How much suffering and sickness the people of God might avoid if they only understood the Divine laws that govern our bodies. Yes I say divine laws, because our bodies are God’s workmanship, and He has instituted certain laws or forces that work the machine, that causes our bodies to live, act, and move, as He designed they should. God says, “the blood is the life,” and the blood becomes pure or impure as the digestive organs are treated lawfully, or abused. And if those organs are overworked, or abused in any way, disease is sure to follow. But “because sentence is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.” — Eccl 8:11. How can we glorify God with our bodies which are His, and at the same time transgress the physical laws that govern them? Hence the Apostle Paul’s, injunction, “whatsoever you do, whether you eat or whether yon drink do all to the glory of God.” He also speaks of some whose god is their belly.” — Phil. 3:17—19. Let their table become a snare before them, and that which should have been for their welfare let it become a trap, let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.” — Psa. 69:22-23. “Blessed art thou O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness.” — Eccl. 10:17. Yes this eating out of season (between meals) for gluttony, instead of for strength is a great source of evil. But so many people are ignorant in regard to the laws of health that they kill themselves with improper diet; they eat as it were in darkness.
“All his days also he eateth in darkness, and he hath much sorrow and wrath with his sickenness.” — Eccles. 5:17. The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly. The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward part of the belly.” — Prov. 20:27-30. So if we transgress we must suffer the stripes. But “the highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul.” — Prov. 16:17. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the holy is understanding, for by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased: but fools because of their transgressions and because of their iniquities are afflicted, their soul abhorreth all man-

CAMP MEETING, ST JAMES MO.
This meeting will be held Sept. 4—11th on the fair ground near St James, where it was held last year. St James is on the St Louis and SanFrancisco R. R. one hundred miles south west of St Louis. There will be a pavillion on the ground that will seat and shelter several hundred people The brethren write that they “will do all they can to accommodate those that come from a distance, but would advise all that can to bring tents and bedding. It is expected that there will be a boarding tent on the ground. Bro’s A. B. Palmer, and S. L. Speck are expected. And we invite all to come that can.” Amen!

Camp meeting at Norwood, Mo. comemncing Sept: 18 and continue as long as the Lord wills. It will he held on Bro Byrum’s place four miles south of Norwood. Our tabernacle was burned on the night of Aug., 10. We had just ended a three weeks meeting, and went next morning to take down the tabernacle and it had been cut and burned. But praise the Lord! The people seem more ready to help get mother one. If the saints anywhere feel led to aid us a little in procuring another one it will be very thankfully received, as we are not wealthy, but mean to have one if the Lord wills, by the time of the C. M. The saints every-where are invited to attend this meeting.

A silly old man over in Ill. who is publishing a litte paper for the glory of Mrs. Woodsworth, said; ‘John Winebrenner never claimed to be the founder of the Church but he and six other ministers claimed to be the means of reforming the Church of God. This is a ridiculous assertion. The Church of God is a perfect Church and cannot be reformed or improved. And any Church that needs reformation is not Gods Church. It is claimed by the Mormons that Joseph Smith reorganized the Church of God. Did God found a Church that was so imperfect as to need reforming by man? Or so poorly organized, that Smith had to organize it over, to keep it from tumbling down? Such assertions are an insult to God.

CONFIDENCE FORFEITED.
FOR some two years past we have deplored the out cropping of fanaticism, and some symptoms of free-love elements in Mrs. Elizabeth McCormack, of Iowa, who has been traveling about as a Gospel worker. Last winter it was made visible that her fanatical whims, under the pretense of high claim of discerning, were disastrous to the cause of Christ, wherever she went. Accordingly we labored with her for her deliverance in Cheshire, Allegan Co., Mich. But all our efforts were stubbornly disregarded. Afterward we wrote her admonishing her to get rid of her highly inflated fancies of the devil. There was just enough humility manifest in reply, to justify us in withholding public reproval, and awaiting further developments. And we are sorry to say that the developments have proved decidedly of a dark shady character, which requires all saints to reject, and have no fellowship with. She seems to have withdrawn entirely without the range of the saints, and from her parents knowledge of her whereabouts, thee vidences, and though circumstances are quite clear that she has gone away in an illegal free-love union. May God deliver them out of the snares of the devil. It is probable that, unless restored to God’s grace, she will keep in unknown parts, and therefore this exposure would not be needed, nevertheless if this rebuke is needed that others may fear. Even though it may be deemed a reproach on the cause of Christ to let such abominations come to light. By the grace of God we will uncover and rebuke all the works of the devil whereever they exist.

We expect to soon revise our subscription book, and we hope all those who are able to pay will send in their dues on subscription so as to save us trouble of informing them. By so doing yon will enable us to send out to those who are too poor to pay. We are in very much need of means to meet the present expenses. The circulation of the Trumpet is rapidly increasing, but we feel that there is a need of a much wider circulation. Let those who can, aid us by sending in new subscribers. Those that have friends send in their names and address and we will send it awhile free, in order to introduce it in their homes, that the Gospel may be spread over all parts of the United States. We also send free to the poor.

Deerfield Camp Ground, Aug., 9.
THIS morning the farewell time has come and with many holy greetings and fervent embraces the dear saints are taking their leave and one little company alter another are leaving the consecrated ground. O the deep and tender love that knits our hearts together. How much of Paradise we do find in this heavenly fellowship. O glory to the precious name of Jesus! We are oft at a loss to know how Heaven itself can excel the glory of God in the midst of His beloved city, the camp of the saints. Quite a strong force came over from Darke. Auglaize, Clarke, & Logan Co,s. Ohio where the good work is spreading well. A large load of happy saints came over from Grant Co., Bro. and sister George and daughter from Jennings Co., besides which there were not many from abroad. Three sisters came over from Winchester, the county seat and recieved the Word of God gladly, leaving all to follow Jesus. May God bless them and use them in that place. We trust the Lord will soon send the Gospel there and others may be fount “among the living in Jerusalem.” The Lord surely healed one of those sisters, if she will firmly hold the faithful promise. God help her and all others that were healed to fight the good fight of faith, and claim the victory for both soul and body. There were ministers from abroad, Bro’s. Kilpatrick, Schell, Jacobson, J. N. Howard, and G. W. Howard, B. E. Warren, and ourself. Not many meetings passed without some souls being saved. Not less than 50 or 60 souls were saved, converted, or sanctified, or both. Eight were solemnly buried with Christ in baptism. And on the last eve of the meeting nearly a hundred holy brothers and sisters followed the example and commands of the dear Redeemer in washing one anothers feet, and the Lord’s supper. O bless God! how sacred and sweet to follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth.
The work in this country is standing very solid increasing with the increase of God. May God bless all His people that were in attendance here and keep you all till we meet in Glory. Amen!

THE BEAVER DAM CAMP MEETING.

This was perhaps the most extensive and glorious assembly of the saints in this evening light. A great multitude of people came from many places in Ind, am from various surrounding states. The unity, harmony, and fellowship all glorious and heavenly, yea without the slightest jar. The Holy Spirit was in perfect control, and He so wondrously ruled that not a discordant spirit could move a tongue. Though no precautions were taken to pro..ureorder. save a united trust in God, there was unbroken order, and not the least trouble. Not less than 25 of God’s holy ministers were in attendance, and all spake and labored as the Spirit of God wrought in them and the glorious Gospel discourses all linked together in beautiful systetmatic order, as if they had been a chain of discourses, duly arranged by one person. One showed how to consecrate and obtain entire sanctification or holiness. Another how to keep saved, another how to progress in holiness, another the life of holines, etc. Never did we attend a meeting where more deep, strong and clear Gospel was preached, nor where salvation work was more solid and thorough; divine solidity was a marked characteristic of this meeting. The pure Word of God, backed by the mighty Spirit of God, wrought effectually in the hearts of the people, and as a result the altar seats were filled about three fitness a day, and scores were justified and sanctified wholly. No one kept account but the Lord, who “writeth up the people” that are “born in Zion,” but we should judge the number saved would not fall much short or 150.
One glorious epoch in this campaign of fire was reached in this meeting, in the interest taken in the children. The Lord moved mother Smith to have childrens meetings which were richly blessed of God, in the salvation of quite a number of dear little boys and girls, who could testify boldly of the grace of God. How thankful we are to God that our minds have been in some degrees awakened to our duty and responsibility toward the children. The little folks have been too long neglected: how ready we found them to give their little hearts to God, when blessed with a meeting in which they were made to feel free to take part without intruding on older people. It is a sad fact that the children too often feel that erroneous notion in older people, which led the disciples of Christ to forbid parents to bring their children to Jesus, thinking the divine Son of God, had no time to bother with children. But Jesus relinked the disciples, and ordered the children to be brought to Him freely. In each of those little innocents He saw an immortal soul for which He was to die, and which He washed should dwell with Him in glory and wear a crown of life, and He loved to have them throng Him and receive His kind words and blessings. Henceforth, we are resolved to give the children a chance to hear the Gospel in simple instruction suited to their young minds. God help all she saints to not only “bring up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord,” but also “command their children and their husbands after them to keep the ways of the Lord.” — Gen. 18:19. There is no used that holy people’s children should grow up in sin and run wild with the world. God will work with you and bless your efforts if you in faith, love and firmness, demand of them to repent, and be converted, shortly after they come to the years of accountability. And after saved see that they be guarded from sin, and if stepping aside require them to get down on their knees and ask God to forgive them. Thus by proper care, and a holy example they can be established in righteousness while they are yet subject to your control. On Tuesdy the 19, we went lo Beaverdam lake where 16, dear children of God were buried with Christ in baptism, and arose with the blessing of God upon their souls. Among the number were some of the precious little converts, including my own dear Sidney. O how thankful we feel to God, that He has changed his little heart, in his youth. Yes a real change has taken place, that fills his little heart with love.
On Monday morning many of the beloved saints had to leave for their homes. That evening the precious and holy ordinances of washing the saints feet, and the Lord’s supper, were observed by about 175 saints that were left to enjoy the heavenly feast. O how expressibly glorious, and awful the revelation of Jesus to us all, as we followed His footsteps. O how deep, how pure and how overwhelming the joy and bliss of following the Lamb whithersoever He goeth. What a heavenly inspiration seemed to carry our hearts and minds all away to the upper room where we saw Jesus girded with the towel washing His disciple’s feet, whom He loved to the end. And then we sat in awe and amazement around the cross of Calvary and heard the suffering Lamb of God exclaim, “it is finished.” Yes it is finished. O precious Redeemer, not only on the cross, but in all our hearts thy great work of salvation is finished. And shall we not forever love Thee, and keep thy commandments? O how sweet and how precious are the precepts unto our hearts.
The dear little children were ready to take the towel and follow Jesus, which was a beautiful sight.
This meeting seemed a real and wonderful epoch in the onward march of the Almighty. Never was our heart and soul so flooded with grace and glory, and so overwhelmed with gratitude to the God of all grace and peace. O it is wonderful! wonderful!! It seems to our soul as though we are carried to the celestial world. Surely the day of the Lord must be very near, for the glory of that bright morning seems already dawning upon our souls.
“Yea all the ransomed, thy bride meek and holy, joyfully heareth thy voice a the door.” Hallelujah!
One cause for our gratitude to God was the privilege of meeting no less than five preachers besides ourself who escaped out of the Winebrennarian sect, and are saved in Christ Jesus
As is very comon, at those meetings a number were healed of God, by faith and prayer.
Again, dearly beloved! we have met and parted in the bonds of holy fellowship, and as we sit writing, hundreds have gone forth from that assembly preaching and testifying to the perfect salvation of God. O how the wondrous work of God is going to the ends of the earth. May the blessed Jesus mightly work in and through all the heralds of God. O let us fill the earth with shouts of praise to God, and songs of victory, and holy joy. O my soul is full of glory.

Dear Brethren: — We are happy to report another glorious victory for Jesus. O how we do praise and magnify the name of Jesus for what He is doing for the people in this country. O wonderful, wonderful counsellor. King of kings and Lord of lords. Hallelujah to His name! The meeting near Cora, Smith Co., Kan., was a wonderful meeting. Many dear precious souls were set free and made happy in Jesus. The meeting continued a little over 2 weeks in the name of Jesus resulting in the salvation of a score of

souls. During the meeting there were about 30 professions to justification and sanctification, and three or four cases of healing. O the wonderful power of God. He has taken our infirmities and borne our sicknesses. 17 persons were buried with Christ in baptism. One of that number was dear Bro. Caldwell (the F. M. preacher) who for a great many-years had been bound in babylon, saw the light and escaped out of mystic babylon. His family and Bro. Marquiss and wife took a firm stand for God. Bro. J. A. Caldwell was ordained elder in the church of God. Bro. White and Bro. Marquiss were chosen and ordained deacons. May the Lord wonderfully bless them and give them much wisdom and wonderfully use them in that country. Our hearts were made to rejoice to see the young seeking the kingdom of God, forsaking the world, its vanity and pride. There were 6 or 7 young ladies sought and found the Lord and laid aside their worldly conformity and came out clear for the Lord. The meeting closed with a glorious ordinance meeting. O how the Lord did manifest Himself to the little ones as they moved forward in obedience to the command of God in St. John 13. 15—17. We are here in the name of Jesus and commence meeting to-night to continue as long as the Lord wills.

Dear Ones in Jesus: — May the Lord bless you all with the riches of His grace. I feel led to testify through the Trumpet that I am saved and sanctified and wholly engaged in the work of the Lord.
After the Bangor camp meeting, I with my wife and family and Bro. June went to Olsego where we pitched a tent in the name of Jesus, and began to preach the Word which was listened to by many famishing souls, and conviction settled upon them. After we had begun the work, the Lord sent dear Bro. Stover from Nebraska to assist in the work, and also sister Fisher whom the Lord used in teaching the Word. Dear Bro. Warner and Co. also was with us a few days. The Lord blessed in preaching and in song. Bro. and sister Pike came and stayed over each Sunday and administered to temporal wants. Also dear Bro. F. Schoolcraft and wife with others of the dear saints from Kendall refreshing us both spiritually and with temporal needs. God bless them for their kindness. This is in a new field and during 4 weeks, 6 or 7 were gloriously saved and many others asked our prayers, and I pray God that they may yet yield to Jesus and be saved. Good interest and good order prevailed throughout the meeting and increased unto the end. Sun. July 27th, 4 dear souls obeyed the ordinance of God’s house and were buried with Him by baptism into His death, that they might arise to walk in newness of life. May God ever bless and keep them faithful unto the end. From this place Bro. Pike moved the tent to Cheshire and pitched it again in the name of the Lord. Again we poured out God’s wonderful truth on the people, and many who were in bondage were made free. Others were saved from their sins and made to rejoice in a Saviour’s love. The Church at Cheshire was gloriously melted in the ladle of God’s love. Many of the dear saints from different places came together filled with the Spirit and all enjoyed a glorious time in the presence of the Lord.

Dear Trumpet Readers: — I want to testify to the glory of God of the healing of my baby. She is four months old, and had been sick the most of her life. We tried medical aid but it failed. I felt led at different times to write to the Trumpet Office for the prayers of the saints. I spoke to sister Faris about it, and she wrote the letter for me. We obeyed God and sent for the elders of the church; They anointed her in the name of our Lord and Master, and praise His holy name, my baby is recovering. Pray for me that in the future I may trust God for my physician. I feel that I have not given God the glory as I should, for His goodness and mercy to me. The dear Lord healed me about two years ago this fall of a long standing disease. I felt that the work was done instantly. Last winter my daughter had whooping cough, and the elders laid hands on her, and she was healed. I do praise God to-night for victory in my soul, and I do love to do God’s will. I am saved and sanctified. When the dear Lord saved me, He cleansed all sectism out of my soul, and all worldly things. We have a glorious little Church in this place. Pray for us that we may ever hold up the banner of salvation.

Darr Saints: — I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony for the Trumpet. I am saved this afternoon and sanctified, and have a sweet peace in my soul which nothing can disturb. It truly is a well of water springing up in my soul continually. I feel that the Lord leads me to tell you a little of my experience. Four years ago the Lord saved my soul. About one year from that time I consecrated for sanctification. I was a member of the F. M. sect, but was walking in all the light I had at that time. I never heard the true light preached in all its purity until a year ago last spring when Bro. Grover came to our neighborhood. I then began searching the scriptures until I was convinced that babylon meant the sects, and God was calling His people out of her. I then forsook her and stepped out into this blessed evening light I do praise God for the freedom I have in my soul, and I want to tell to the glory of God, that He has healed my body. For four years I was afflicted with rheumatism, and my lungs pained me almost constantly. I had several physicians, and they pronounced it consumption. I also had heart disease very bad; the pain was so severe, that for weeks at a time I could get no relief only as I used morphine. Two years ago last spring I felt impressed to look to the Lord for healing. I then stopped the use of morphine and all medicine, and put my whole trust in God, and He did relieve me wonderfully. One year ago last spring I had the commands fulfilled in James 5:14, and the Lord has restored me to health again. Blessed be His name!

About 20 years ago Christ found me lost in sin and washed me in His blood. Glory to His name! I have always according to the light I had, tried to live for the Lord, although I often stumbled I must say to my shame. I lived in the Dutch Reform sect until 1 year ago last winter, a friend of mine gave me a Gospel Trumpet, and I read it until it was almost worn out; and asked God for light. All the 20 years I was unsettled; I knew the sect was not right, but did not know any better way. I often went to another sect, because I liked to hear them pray and testify. But was always dissatisfied, for it was revival in the winter, and in the summer no time to serve the Lord. But now I have found salvation; and oh how happy I was when I saw Jesus in all His beauty in the evening light. Praise the Lord oh my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Now I stand in the liberty of the children of God, and have the sweet union with all the saints on earth. Jesus is all and in all to me. I have been trying to heal babylon, but she is not healed: neither can she be, because Jesus is the Church and no sect babylon. I pray God to enable me to help call the people home and point poor sinners to Christ.
Pray for us, myself and family that we may continue to fight in this glorious battle against satan and his host.

Dear Readers: — I am led of God to write a few lines and let all know what God has done for me. The Lord justified and sanctified me about four years ago and I have been kept by His mighty power from all sin ever since. O I praise God continually for all His wondrous works and ways and for the oneness the children of God have with one another in Christ Jesus. On July 6, we met in the name of Jesus at mother Dotters house and after a few words of explanation on baptism we proceeded to the Allegheny river where two precious souls were buried with Him by Baptism into death. And rose to walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection. The one was an aged mother of 75 years. The Lord witnessed unto them by the baptism of the Holy Spirit with humbleness and praises of God in their souls by following in the footsteps of Christ. After which we proceeded to the house and followed Christ in the ordinance of washing the saints feet, and the Lord’s supper. O praise God! “If ye know these things happy are ye if ye do them.” We had a glorious meeting leaping and, shouting praising God with our whole soul mind and spirit. Your saved brother in Christ.

Dear Saints: — We do praise God for full salvation. We attended grove meeting in Mother Water’s grove, and on Monday July, 28, God saved our souls. Praise God our sins were forgiven, but still bad a thought on our minds and on Wednesday, 30, He sanctified us and gave us full salvation, and recieved baptism and now the work is done and we live sweetly in Jesus. We could not see into second grace but God opened our eyes and gave us light now we see it as plain as the heavens before us. O glory to God for the saved brothers and sisters that He sent to that grove to teach and bring us poor doubting sinners to Christ. O praise His holy name! now comes persecution but thanks be to God. On this Rock we have built our faith and nothing can separate us from the love of God. We promisee Him that we would forsake everything for His sake and then He sanctified our soul. Now dearly beloved we want the prayers of all the truly wholly sanctified, those that belong to the Church of Christ, that we may stand firm, just and holy, unto the end; he that endureth unto the end shall be saved. May the dear Lord send some person to this section to lead poor souls to Christ. The tobacco habit is one engaged in here by church members. A man asked me if it was a sin to use tobacco. I said it would be for me. If a man can glorify God by he use of tobacco then amen. “Cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh perfecting Holiness in the fear of the Lord.” Does such scripture favor the use of tobacco? No. Jesus saves me just now. Praise the Lord!

Dear Saints: — My testimony is that I am saved to the uttermost. I am at home again after a five weeks trip in Arkansas where I met Bro. Kilman and we held a meeting near where Bro. Reed lives, and found a few saints there who were on the Bible line and others who claimed to be sanctified, but when the Word was preached they began to find fault and oppose us. Bro. Smith came and helped us in the work. The meeting lasted twelve days. The opposition was so very great that rocks were thrown into the house, but the Lord enabled the saints to be calm, and gave us victory, while we proclaimed the whole council of God. We went next to Oak Grove, about 8 miles north and held a meeting for about two weeks, where ten souls were converted and four sanctified. Here we found some true saints of God and also found the Gospel Trumpet in their house. I expect to go south again soon. Pray for me that I may be able to preach the Gospel straight, regardless of men or what the people may say or think. O that God’s ministers would see the folly of only preaching a part of the Word and failing to declare the whole council of God for fear of the people.

On Thursday August the 1, 1890. Little Albert Daniel Beaudette, son of Bro and sister A. C. & Bessie Beaudette of Marine City, Mich, passed away to be with Jesus. He was 11 months and 9 days old. May God bless and sustain the parents who so dearly loved their child, and ever enable them to do His will in all things.
Our darling child, oh can it be
Thy Spirit’s fled from earth away?
Oh is it true, thy form we see
Is now as lifeless as the clay?
Our hearts bowed down in deepest grief,
Are yet submissive to thy will
Who gave to us the tender leaf,
Whose mission did so soon fulfill.
Those lips so sweet to press to ours
Now takes a pallid form in death;
Thy sweetness was as many flowers,
Thy love was seen in every breath.
An angel came and whispered near,
And did the summons gently bear;
Thou gentle bud, to parents dear,
Art called to lands more bright and fair.
Thou canst not come to us again
Nor can we ever go to thee
Until our work on earth began
Shall end in sweet eternity.
We’ll praise the Lord who gave to us
Thy bright and shining life to bless;
We praise His name for blessings thus,
Which filled our home with righteousness.
And now again we bless Thy name,
That Thou didst see, ’twas best to call
Our darling little church home
To dwell with Thee who ’ rt Lord of all.

Died at Scammon, Mich., July 17, 1890, Isabella G. Cole, Aged 17 years, 11 months, and 22 days. She met with an accident 5 Yrs. ago, and after 5 years of suffering, fell asleep in Jesus in whom she put all her trust.

Died in Gratiot Co. Mich., July 25, 1890, Elizabeth W. Gardner, Wife of Dennis Gardner. Aged 66 years, 3 months, and 8 days. Her death was caused by paralysis. Three of her children have gone on before to dwell with Jesus, and three are left to mourn the loss of a good mother. As the time of her departue drew near, she often spoke of the blessed assurance she had of the heavenly land, and there was not a shadow of doubt. She is now with Jesus. and we, her husband and children, deeply feel our loss, but do not as those who have no hope, for our loss is her eternal gain, By her request her funeral sermon was preached by A. J. Shelly, from Rev. 14:13.
Asleep in Jesus, O how precious,
Her work is done, her conflict o’er;
Jesus’ Blood, to her propitious,
Now anchored on the other shore.
Sleeping, O so sweetly sleeping,
Her joys complete within the fold.
Why do our hearts break in weeping
While her joys cannot be told?

God bless the bereaved parents and friends who mourn their loss, for “Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord.” And we can say as Job of old, the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord.

DIED near Akron, Ind. Aug 7 1890, Leinis Roy Bryant, infant son of George and Mary Bryant. Aged, 9 months and 14 days. Little Roy was a most precious child. All who became acquainted with him, learned to love him. May God bless the bereft parents and friends in their grief, all not saved in Jesus now and prepared to meet their God, may they get ready and meet both God and the little gem whom God has taken home to be with Him through all eternity.
A gentle hand unseen by us,
Has plucked our sweetest bud;
By this alone our grief is blessed,
It was the hand of God.
In all our hearts He planted deep
This precious little one;
As forth He takes His own we weep,
But say: “Thy will be done.”
No care was lavished here in vain,
Upon this plant of love;
Though soon removed, he’ll bloom again
In sweeter form above.
O gentle one, we miss thee here,
Sweet form we love so well;
But in our Father’s better care,
We know the child is well.

ner of meat, and they draw near to the gates of death. Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.” — Psa. 107:17-19.
I know God says, “let no man judge you in meats or drinks. But this simply means we are not under the old cermonial law. But if people would judge themselves by the Word, and abstain from gluttonous habits and substitute bread and water, graham and oatmeal, beef, vegetables and fruit, and such things as God can bless, instead of bolted bread, pie, cake, and all manner of condiments, and swines flesh, which is a curse to any one that eats thereof, and be temperate in all things, using this world as not abusing it, then we might almost defy disease. “Surely He shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand, but it shall not come nigh thee.” Glory to God forever! Wherever we see the bill of fare given for God’s people, it is very plain fare. When the angels of the Lord visited Abraham, he set before his royal guests bread, butter, milk and veal. Gen. 18:5-8. A simple stew of venison was a favorate food for Isaac.. David says, “let me not eat of the dainties of them that work iniquity.” – Psa. 141:4. Solomon says when thou sittest to eat with a ruler consider diligently what is before thee: and put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite: be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.” Prov 23:1-5. Daniel refused to eat of the King’s fare but chose a simple dish called “pulse,” (which was a cereal, or grain.) And at the end of ten days was much fatter and fairer in face than those that ate the kings meat.” — Dan. 1:12-15. When Christ appeared to the twelve, He said, have you any meat? and they gave him a fish and a honeycomb. When Christ prepared a breakfast for His disciples is was only bread and fish. When He fed the twelve thousand, it was bread and fish. When the prodigal returned to his father’s house, he did not prepare a roast pig, but the fatted calf. Now this is sufficient to show that God’s people in all ages have been plain livers. Peter says the part of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries.” — 1 Peter 4:3. Webster gives the definition of reveilings as feasting of banqueting; as feasting, entertaining with rich fare. Partaking of rich fare, so you see whether we entertain others with rich dainty fare, or partake ourselves we break the commandment. Paul says they that do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. — Gal. 5:12. Peter and Paul both place gluttony with the works of the flesh. “If we live after the flesh we shall die.” — Rom. 8:13. A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on and are punished. But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat. – Dan. 1:8. The Word says, our bodies are the temple of God. Paul says, “he that defileth the temple, him shall God destroy.” So then let us who profess to be the children of God, see to it that holiness to the Lord is written in all our pots, and vessels as Zech. prophesies it shall be. Zech. 11:20, 21. Yes dear saints of the Living God, there must be a great health reform brought about before Isaiah’s prophecy can be fulfilled. “For behold I create new heavens, and a new earth? and the former shall not be remembered nor come into mind; but be ye glad and rejoice forever in that which I create: for behold I create Jerusalem a rejoicing and her people a joy. And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people; and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying. There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not fulfilled his days, for the child shall die an hundred years old: but the sinner being a hundred years old shall be accursed.” — Isa. 65:17- 21. “And the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick: The people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquities.” — Isa. 33:24.
It is not in the order of God that His redeemed ones should be sick, for Christ came to redeem us from the curse of the law, (of which sickness was a prominent feature) for He made a complete atonement for both soul and body. For “him self took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses.” Matt. 8:17, and “He hath given us all things that pertain to life and Godliness. 2 Pet 1:3. Now while I believe in honoring God and His Word by taking Christ for our healer, I believe in honoring Him still farther by eating and drinking to the glory of God and adopting that manner of living that will keep us from getting sick. Let us therefore obey the divine laws that govern our body, and crucify the affections and lusts that war against the soul; then we shall be fit subjects to inherit the new earth and not an inhabitant shall say I am sick. He that overcometh shall inherit all things. That includes the tree of life, “blessed is he that doeth my commandments that he may have a right to the tree of life,” Rev. 22:14. to him that ovecometh will I give to eat of the tree of life; which is in the midst of the paradise of God.” Amen! All scriptures are given by inspiration of God, and are profitable for doctrine, for reprof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works,” 2 Tim. 3:16- 17. “And He gave some apostles; and some prophets: and some evangelists: and some pastors and teachers for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.” Eph. 4:11-12. I believe I have my place in the body of Christ, and I have long felt the spirit prompting me to write on this subject, and lay before God’s people this portion of scripture which others have neglected to present, hoping and praying that the Lord will bless it to the good of His people. LOVE NOT THE WORLD.

LOVE not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in Him. — 1 John. 2:15. This is a subject that is worthy of our attention and deserves our deepest thought. Many get over zealous, and become fanatic on this subject: even manifesting hatred toward sinners, which causes persecution that is not for righteousness sake. Jesus said: “Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” — Matt. 5:10. We have no promise of the blessing if we prove by our action that we hate men; and by so doing cause them to hate and persecute us. “Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee.” — Prov. 9:8. It is a mistaken idea among the saints that we manifest a spirit of fight or hatred toward sinners. Jesus said also in this fifth chapter of Matt. 44 verse. “But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” “Well” says one, “the text says” “love not the world neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world the love of the Father is not in him. Let us see what the love of the Father is. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life.” — John. 3:16. “But God commandeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” — Rom. 5:8. “Hereby perceive we the love of God, because He laid down His life for us.” — 1 John. 3’ 16.
“He that loveth not, knoweth not God: for God is love.” In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because, that God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.” 4:9. We see by these scriptures that the love of the Father toward the world was great; and as the Father and Son are one, the Son’s love also is great. Jesus when upon the earth manifested His love to the world in different ways. At one time He was seen at a publicans table feasting with sinners: then came the old grumbling Pharisees saying. “Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners”? We hear the same pharisaical sound to-day among those that have a zeal not according to knowledge, saying “you must not patronize sinners.” You must not visit sinners nor be found in their company. Jesus said: “they that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.” I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. — Luke 5:27—32.
The Word teaches us that there is a class of persons we should not company. Is it sinners that make no profession? Let us see what the Apostles say about it.
“I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators: yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then ye must need go out of the world. But now I have written unto you, not to keep company, if any man that is CALLED A BROTHER be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer or a drunkard, or an extortioner: with such an one no not to eat. — 1 Cor. 5:9— 11.
“A man that is an heretic, after the first and second admonition, reject; knowing that he that is such, is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.” — Titus. 3:10, 11. “Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every BROTHER that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.” 2 Thess. 3:6. “If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God’s speed.” — 2 John. 10. By these scriptures we learn that it is the heady, high- minded, ungodly professer that we must abstain from their company; and not the poor sinner that never knows God. The Word says: “Serve not the world.” Now this cannot signify that we love not men: that would make a contradiction in the Word of God, which is impossible. Where there is a contradiction there is a lie. “God cannot lie.” What then? Must we make the Word untrue? God forbid. “Let God be true and every man a liar.” The Apostle means that we love not the carnal nature of man, or the sin that is in man. Not meaning that we should hate the man or that we should not be a friend to sinners. James says 4:4. Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever, therefore, will be a friend of the world, is the enemy of God.” Having reference to the lust of the flesh: being a friend to the world to lust with them. As we see in the verses before this. “Ye lust, and have not: ye kill and desire to have and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” Therefore He says: “The friendship of the world is enmity with God.” Not that we should be distant toward sinners or refrain their company. But we should love them and do them all the good we can, admonishing and teaching them the ways of life and salvation. Not partaking of their sins or following after their fleshly ways. For they that are after the flesh, do mind the things of the flesh: but they that are after the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spirtually minded is life and peace. — Rom. 8:5—6.
Now let us notice, “the things in the world.” “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eye, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. Now this world as spoken here, signifies, all that is contained in the fleshly mind. It constitutes a world of lust and sin, in the same sense that Jesus spoke of the tongue. “And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity.” — James. 3:6. Paul classifies the works of the flesh, which are the same that John spoke of as being the things of the world. “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” — Gal. 5:19-21. These are the THINGS we should hate, we should fight, we should not fellowship. These are things the Apostle meant when he said: “Love not the world nor the things in the world.” Jesus says: “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitfully use you, and persecute you.” — Matt. 5:44. As we have, therefore, opportunity, let us do good unto all men especially unto them who are of the household of faith. — Gal. 6:10. “And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient.” 2 Tim. 2:24. “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.” – Heb. 12:14. “Charity suffereth long, and is kind.” Oh praise God for salvation! We know the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Gal. 5:22, 23.

Dear Trumpet Readers: — I do praise God this afternoon for His sanctifying and keeping power. The Word says, we must come up through much tribulation, and he that would live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecutions; but He has promised to be a present help in time of need. I praise God for His healing power. I was taken violently sick last April, and complied with the Word and was healed instantly. Also last camp-meeting, Bro. Warner and sister Smith laid hands on me for the healing of bodily infirmities of long standing, and was healed for which I give God all glory. I do praise God for His saving and keeping power. He has saved me from the use of tobacco, tea, and coffee seven years ago after an excessive use for thirty two years. Paul says, cleanse yourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. I found all these to be filthy and idol habits, and I praise God there is no more desire to be at the flesh pots of Egypt. My trust is all in the Lord. Your Bro. saved in Jesus’ blood.

Dear Saints: — God bless you all It has been some time since I last wrote for the Trumpet. But I can say that Jesus still abides in my soul, and keeps me sweetly saved all the time. Glory to His name.! O how precious He is, and what glorious promises He has given to His children. O bless the Lord O my soul, and all that is within me praise His holy name. O dear saints it is so safe to trust the Lord. For He says I will never leave thee nor forsake thee. But He has promised to be with us even unto the end of the world. And He says though Heaven and Earth pass away my Word’s shall not pass away. O what a firm foundation; which cannot be shaken. O how many times He has verified His promises unto me in healing my body, and preserving my soul. Truly it is good to trust the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. The Lord keeps the saints sweetly saved here in this place. O what precious meetings we have, though few in number yet He makes us rejoice that our names are written in Heaven. O what glory fills our souls as wo leap, and shout His praises on the hilltops, and tell of His wonderful works to the children of men. They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion which cannot be removed; but abideth forever. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem so the Lord is around about His people, from henceforth even forever. Amen and amen!

Dear Saints: — It is with much love in my heart for God, and all God’s obedient children that I write again. I am at this moment rejoicing in that blessed hope of the eternal salvation. Oh! how I do want to see the Gospel cause prosper, and see lost souls saved and redeemed from the deception of men. I hardly know how to thank God enough that He through the all cleansing blood of Jesus Christ; has demised me from all sin, and that He ever keeps me able to serve Him and to stand against the fiery trials; that the enemy brings against me. But praise the Lord He will forsake none, who will commit the keeping of their souls unto Him. I do realize just now that I am nothing in His sight, save through His great tender mercies, and the wonderful love of the Father, Lord of Heaven and Earth, and through the cross of a meek and lowly Savior. And if it is His will to give me no more than the crumbs that fall from His table I shall be satisfied. Your Bro. all for Christ.

Dear Saints: The Lord wonderfully saves me and is keeping me by His mighty power. He sent one of His ministers here, who told us that the Bible was a safe guide, and that all creeds and so called churches were not of God. I had been a sectarian for 10 or 11 years and it put me to thinking, for I could see the strife and confusion there was between the denominations, and was no fellowship there. I prayed God to deliver me, and guide me into all truth, and I prayed to the Lord if this man’s words be true wherein he taught, that it was my privilege to have the second work of grace wrought in my soul and be filled with the Holly Ghost that it might be so unto me. And He showed me by His Spirit and power that it was true. O I praise the Lord for this wonderful peace that He has given to my weary soul, and I still contiune to bless the Lord for His mighty saving and keeping power. He has washed me and made me white in the blood of the Lamb, and gives me victory in my soul over all sin, and all works of the devil.

Glory be to His holy name forever and ever! Dear saints pray for me that my faith fail not.
