Precious Thought.

_____

Of all the thoughts that cling to memory’s wall,
This is the grandest of them all:
That Jesus gave his life for you and me,
A sacrifice, from sin sets free.

Oil wondrous thought! so sweet, how can it be!
And yet by faith we all can see
How we can have salvation full and free,
Through his shed blood on Calvary.

Oh blessed God! redemption thou hast given,
The shackles of the grave are riven;
As kings, through Jesus Christ we reign supreme,
Salvation now is all our theme.

By grace the wrongs beneath our feet we’ve trod,
For now are we the sons of God;
Yes born again of Spirit all divine,
The blessed Jesus now is mine.

For by his grace he makes me what I am,
And gives my soul that peaceful calm,
Brings Heaven down to my poor soul within
And cleanses me from every sin.

It cost the precious blood of Heaven’s pride,
That we should be his only bride;
And all in all for you and me ’twas bought:
Oh wondrous, wondrous precious thought!

TRUST NOT IN FALSE GODS.

_____

“Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came.” Amos 6:1.

THIS text tells us of a class of people who are at ease, trusting in something besides God. “Mountain of Samaria.” This mountain was in the territory originally belonging to the tribe of Joseph, chosen by Omri as the situation of the capital of the kingdom of Israel. He bought the hill and built upon it. — 1 Kings 16:23, 24. The children of Israel were in possession of Samaria, and the king of Samaria was considered king indeed, for the city had been besieged several times, but always ineffectually until the time of Shalmaneser, king of Assyria, who after a siege of three years took the city and carried Israel away into Assyria. 2 Kings 18:9-11. As long as Israel kept God’s covenant they were safe, but now see them go away as captives. Why? Because they obeyed not the voice of the Lord their God but transgressed his covenant. 2 Kings 18:12, and 17:22-24. Here is where Ahab erected an altar for Baal and provoked the God of heaven to anger. 1 Kings 16:32, 33. In 2 Kings 17:24, we see the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Ava, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria, instead of the children of Israel, and they possessed Samaria and dwelt in the cities thereof. So we see the inhabitants of Samaria are all of Assyrian descent and badly mixed up, and of course were all idolaters, and a great many Israelites were mixed up with these and trusted in the abominations, such as the worship of Baal, the same as the Assyrians. After these idolaters had possessed the land a short time, the Lord sent lions among them and slew some. They now are in an awful condition, but the first thing thought of, is to hear from the God of the Israelites, that he may stay the plague. So they sent for a priest, one they had carried away, and had him tell them the ways of the Lord, but still went on making gods of their own and worshiping them. 2 Kings 17:25-29. So the nations feared the Lord and served their graven images. Verse 41. God uses this class of people as a type to represent another class that we find in the world to day, and as we try to draw a picture plain enough for all to understand, may the dear Lord bless these words to his glory and to the good of many precious souls that want light.

John was sent before Christ to prepare the way for his coming, but God’s people were not complete until he came, then Paul says, “Ye are complete in him.” — Col. 2:10. Christ gave himself for the church that he might sanctify it. — Eph. 5:25-27. But ye are come unto mount Zion * * * to the general assembly, and I church of the firstborn.” — Heb. 12:22, 23. Mount Zion is the church, and Jesus gave himself for it, more than “two talents.” Praise God! we shall endeavor to notice both mounts as we pass along, and inhabitants of same. “Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth is Mount Zion.” — Psa. 48:2. As Omri bought Samaria for the capital or “chief city,” so Jesus bought Mount Zion, of which he is king. He says, “I am the door,” “knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” When we get into the city, then we learn the way that Jesus laid down for us to follow. How do we get out? By forsaking God’s holy will. The church flourished in beauty and grandeur after Pentecost, until about 270, A. D., when man began to forsake God’s ways and set up altars of his own, yes, “altars of Baal,” as did Ahab. Baal signifies Master, Lord, or husband. Man then began to leave his first husband (Christ), and follow after lovers (sects). Hosea 2:6-9. Those Samaritans it is said, “feared God and served their graven images,” not afraid to worship other gods, but afraid God would destroy them by lions again. This was the kind of fear they had. Men to day will say, I fear God, and still cling to sectism, saying we must be organized, we must have a home, we can’t serve God and be scattered everywhere, we must be united, we must belong to the church (meaning sect). Praise God! His people do not have to forsake him to be united; “we are knit together in love.” — Col. 2:2. We are not scattered; “for we are all one in Christ Jesus.” — Gal. 3:28. Any one ought to be at home with Father and Mother. We are the offspring of God, Acts 17:28, 29, of whom we are named. Eph. 3:14, 15. We bear our Father’s name. “Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.” — Gal. 4:26. Father and Mother are not respected when they are forsaken for other homes. The wise man says, This only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions. Eccl. 7:29. Man was created upright, even “in the image of God,” but by transgression lost his purity and began seeking out inventions.

An article in the U. B. paper called the “RELIGIOUS TELESCOPE,” written by one G. M. Huffman, reads as follows: “There is a dangerous disorganizing element spreading over the country to day, known as comeouters. The question with many earnest workers, is to know how to successfully counteract their baneful effects. I am sometimes led to believe that in many instances ministers of the gospel make their apparent sucsess possible. The decay of spiritual life in the Mother Church not only made the reformation necessary, but the manner of the priestly opposition made it possible. Otterbein’s reformation was made possible by the deadness of the old church.” “A dangerous disorganizing element, known as comeouters.” We know not what class of people is here refered to, but sectarians call every person that comes out of Babylon, a “comeouter,” or those who do not join any sect. Notice who are the comeouters. We are adopted into the family (church) of God by being “born again” or regenerated, then our names are written in heaven; then we are in Mount Zion, “beautiful for situation.” Glory to Jesus! There God tells us we “shall lack no good thing.” We say, for instance, an evangelist in a series of meetings should report sixty souls saved at St. Joseph, Mo., and they had never heard anything about the church, only they must be saved. Regeneration put them into the church; they did not join it; they were born into it by the new birth. One man preached the gospel to them, so they all believed as one man, had “one faith,” spoke with “one mouth.” Sectarians not discerning the Lord’s body say these converts do not belong to any church (no sect of course). So Mr. A. of M. E. ism goes down to organize by preaching Methodism and not gospel; ten are induced,or seduced to join; and as such generally backslide, they come out of the church and are still in a sect. Then Rev. B., L. L. D., of the F. M. seduces ten more, which only leaves forty; then Dr. C., of the F. B. craft gets ten more; then Rev. E., of the C. P. gets ten more; and Mr. G. M. Huffman of the U. B. gets ten more; only tenleft. Here are a number of comeouters who left the true church and are in man-made isms. He believes the indolence of preachers has a great deal to do with the success in tearing down the churches (sects). Yes, God says the watchmen are blind, sleepy, lying down, loving to slumber. Isa. 56:9-11. While they are asleep, God’s true ministers are at work with their “baneful effects,” as he says. Webster says, baneful means poisonous, hurtful, etc. Glory to Jesus! The pure word is very poisonous indeed to sectism; it saps every particle of life out of them. Hallelujah! “The decay in the Mother Church, (Catholicism), made the reformation necessary.” We have been talking about Father and Mother; here Huffman recognizes Romanism as his mother, in these words, “the Mother Church,” which is true. U. B. ism is one of her daughters, so I is every other sect. Read Rev. 17. May God help every honest soul to see that as they acknowledge the “Mother of Harlots” as their mother, they undoubtedly are harlots, for she (Romanism) has no other kind of children.

Now the text. “Woe to them that trust in the mountain of Samaria,” or those that leave God and trust in creeds, sects, etc., destitute of God’s word to back them up, destitute of a husband, even Christ, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost and the saints of God. The Samaritans were a mixed people, and got some of the children of God to mix with them and even to marry among them. Neh. 13:28. This was after the captivity, and at first the Samaritans were not such great enemies to God’s people but wanted to help in building the temple. They tried to make Zerubbabel and Jeshua think they were servants of God by saying, “For we seek your God as ye do;” but listen for the answer, “Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God, but we ourselves together will build unto the Lord God of Israel.” — Ezra 4:1-5. O glory, hallelujah! No mixed idolaters have anything to do in the building of God’s house (church). How is it, to day we find more and more every day, saying, “We preach holiness,” still clinging to sectism? God’s word is so plain in this that it cannot be misunderstood by a child of God; so these priests of division, Free Methodists, etc. say, We are holiness, for the Bible teaches it. O yes, they fear God and serve their own gods and images, the little god of Methodism. They pretend to seek God as the saints do and want to help in the building of God’s church, but God says, Ye have nothing to do with us; no harlots in my building, all holy material.

All sects, isms, factions, schisms and creeds are institutions invented by man to ride upon, with all sorts of armor. Eze. 38:4. Jesus built his church upon himself, the only sure foundation. We are members of his (Christ’s) flesh and of his bones. Eph. 5:30. Christ is holy, so all who are of his flesh are holy; a holy body indeed. But man has invented hobbies to ride upon, anywhere, except to heaven. The Presbyterian can ride his hobby to the dance, the Methodist to the show, theatre, Christmas tree, festival, circus, etc., anywhere that Jesus does not go. “Now the) Egyptians are men and not God, and their horses (sects) flesh and not spirit. When the Lord shall stretch out his hand, both he that helpeth and he that is holpen shall fall down, and all shall fail together. Isa. 31:3. As the people were in bondage unto the Egyptians, so are they now bound down by laws of man and creeds, not under Christ but discipline, for the Egyptians are men and not God. Why? Because their horses (sects) are flesh. “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousnes, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulation, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies.” — Gal. 5:19, 20. Heresies which means sects, are of the flesh and not of God; so both institution and rider shall fall together. “And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her my people.” As the flaming sword devours from east to west, may all the dear people realize their condition, and fly to Jesus who only can save, and have a part in the first resurrection. Though the thunders roll as on Mount Sinai, perils befall us, men scorn us, friends forsake us, watch Jesus the Morning Star, the conductor of our salvation, the author and finisher of our faith, the only one who can save, sanctify, prepare for heaven, and give us an eternity of joy and bliss. And woe to them that trust in anything else but Jesus Christ.

Your brother, sanctified and preserved in Christ Jesus,

W. A. Haynes.

__________

BIRTH AND GROWTH.

_____

“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily I say unto thee. Except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of heaven.” Jno. 3:3.

THIS is a text that is very familiar in the orthodox world of to day. And we find that a great many people have believed that Jesus is the Christ to the saving of their souls; by so doing they have received a knowledge of salvation by the remission of sins. He that believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. 1 Jno. 5:1. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be; but we know that when he shall appear we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is: and every man that hath this hope in him, purifieth himself even as he is pure. 1 Jno. 3:2, 3.

Bible readers are well aware of the fact that the Bible speaks of love and perfect love; joy and fullness of joy; holiness and perfect holiness; and babes in Christ and men in Christ; but how we obtain this perfection in Christ they understand not. A great number believe that we grow into it. Dear brother, you cannot teach a growth into sanctification, for such men have no lot nor part in the matter; they teach something they know nothing about; and Paul says that the husbandman that laboreth must be first partaker of the fruit. 2 Tim. 2:6. One great objection we find against this life of faith is, that they think that we teach a state beyond which there is no advancement. No one would be more grieved at this thought than we ourselves. Now the text that is frequently quoted is 2 Pet. 3:18. — “But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” We know there is a growth but not into sanctification. The process by which we are sanctified is a purging according to Jno. 15:2, and a cleansing according to 1 Jno. 1:7, 9. Purge, cleanse, and purify are synonymous terms and signify subtraction. We must first be in Christ before we can get the purging. And now what are we purged from? John says we are purged from all sin or unrighteousness. When all sin is cleansed out, that leaves a pure heart, and blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Matt 5:8.

We quote from “Bible Readings,” page 42, “There is a growth in grace, but not into grace. Through sanctification we receive a moral change of our nature; therefore sanctification is not effected by growth, as growth never changes the nature of anything. Growth signifies addition, while purge, cleanse, and purify signify subtraction, which is the only mode of sanctification.” It is just as impossible to grow the carnal mind or inbred sin out of our nature, as it is to grow the weeds out of the cornfields. I have heard men say that they grow into sanctification. I would ask them how long they had been growing. Some would say twenty-five or thirty years. How much nearer are you to God than when you first began? The answer would be, I fear that I am not any. I feel sorry for people that are trying to grow and haven’t any growing life in them. All the pulling and stretching the world can do will not cause a dead tree to grow, but a live tree will grow within itseif, and if we have the growing principle that God puts in the branches of the true vine, we can flourish as the palm tree, and grow like the cedar in Lebanon.

Dearly beloved, it is not the grace that does the growing, but it is we that grow, after we are planted in the field of grace by God the Divine Husbandman. We are tended by the Divine Husbandman and warmed by the Son of righteousness, and watered with the dew from heaven. Surely it is no wonder that some bring forth a hundred fold, some sixty fold, and some thirty fold. Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow, they toil not, neither do they spin, but I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. It is not our works that cause us to grow, but it is the cultivation that God gives us. He does the planting, the tending, the managing and the pruning of the branches. Who of you by taking thought can add one cubit to your stature? The efforts and strains of the body will not cause it to grow. But by God’S Spirit working in us both to will and to do of his own good pleasure, we can grow up a perfect man in Christ Jesus. I realize that I do not camp on the same ground every night, but I am growing in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and I ever expect to be on the forward march for God.

Your brother, saved and sanctified, and out battling for the Lord,

Ostis Wilson.

DIVINE HEALING
—OF—
SOUL AND BODY.

A New Book,
—by—
E. E. BYRUM.

_____

This book is just fresh from the author’s pen, and a glance at the contents is enough to convince any one of its interest and value to those seeking a more thorough khowledge of the Divine Being, and his dealings with people at the present time, as well as in days past.

The first part of the book very plainly marks out the way from sin unto full salvation, according to the teaching of the sacred word.

It presents the gospel truth in such a way as to throw a gleam of light into the pathway of the sinner, and enable him to see that there is hope beyond, through the mercies of a blessed Redeemer.

The BELIEVER is led to see the beauties of full salvation, and the joys in a life of Christian perfection.

THE HEALING OF THE BODY

constitutes the second part of the book. This consists of twenty-six chapters on doctrinal subjects, exposing and overthrowing false ideas and theories concerning the healing power in these last days, showing when, how, and under what circumstances and conditions God heals the sick and afflicted at the present time.

It gives a history and testimonies of healing from the time of Abraham, through the different ages, up to the present time.

The third part of the book consists of the

WITNESSES OF TO DAY.

These are wonderful testimonies of persons who have been healed within the last few years by divine power; such as being instantly restored to sight after having been blind for years; the lame throw away their crutches; broken bones are instantly healed; invalids who have suffered for years immediately arise and walk, after the prayer of faith is offered, etc. The author is personally acquainted, with nearly all the parties who have herein given their testimonies, and gives their names and addresses in the book, so that persons doubting the truthfulness of the same can write to the parties themselves.

It will be a precious volume to those who are afflicted in either soul or body. The chapters on faith, and also other subjects, will strengthen the faith of the reader, and aid in a closer walk with Him who is the “giver of every good and perfect gift.”

It contains 248 good-sized pages; good, plain print, on heavy paper. Neatly bound in cloth, $ .75. Library (half morocco), marble edge, $1.10. Send two cent stamp for special terms to agents. Address,

“A copy of your paper is before me. I am happy to see that God has an earnest people who are pushing the battle to the gate. There are only four or five sanctified souls here, and this place is overrun with idolatry of every description. But the most abominable antichrist spirit that exists here is sectarianism. It is the great barrier between God and the people. Satan uses the so-called churches and their hireling preachers to deceive the people. I find there are in these organizations some honest souls who wish to walk in the light of God. Wife and I held some meetings here last summer, on the street, had large crowds and good attention. And a few were willing to receive the truth.

I am saved and sanctified in Christ Jesus.”

The Lord bless you, dear brother and sister; go forth to the great battle field for Jesus. The time is short, and perishing souls are at stake.

ANOTHER EVIL WORKER.

_____

Some two years ago one, J. W Sickles made a confession in the Trumpet of some inconsistency, but the confession was not followed by reformation. Recently we were told by parties who were God’s children and knew the facts, how that he won the confidence and love of a woman, and they were taking steps toward matrimony; but his son came to the place, exposed his father as having a living wife, and spoiled the works of the flesh and the devil. And now I have received a letter from a brother in Indian Ter., enquiring about him. We take the following from this letter.

“His manner of preaching is trying to act clownish, using burlesque and slang language not fit for the pulpit He also seems to be courting a widow lady, as some of the people have noticed.”

That is the man’s record very generally. He is only fit to co-operate with Samaria (The Sword), where all manner of marriages, and every abomination is justified. Let no man of God have any thing to do with him.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

__________

Plano, Cal., Aug. 19, 1892.

Dear Saints of God: We closed meeting at Plano. Sunday the 14th. We had a good meeting, but we were compelled to close on account of sickness. Most all the saints have been sick; and the feather is very hot. My wife has been getting lower all the time since we came to this hot climate. She is not able now to stand the trip back to the East. But God knows best. Well I can not describe to you the work in Cal. But I say to any of you are anxious to know whether your consecration is to the solid rock, here is the place to find it out soon. It has done me good; I have realized St. Paul’s experience. The way is open here now for a good work this fall and winter. We ask the prayers of all God’s dear children that my wife may be restored. The Lord has permitted this no doubt for a good cause.

Your brother saved to the uttermost,

James Willis.

Dear Saints, and Readers of the Trumpet: The meeting near Antwerp, O. was a grand success. About twelve or fourteen souls were saved, some of whom had been backsliders. A few followed the Lord in the ordinance of baptism. The ordinances of feetwashing and the communion supper were observed with the blessing of God upon the work. We were assisted by Bro’s Otto Bolds and Tommy Carter. We are now at our homes in Clark Co., Ohio, assisting in the grove meeting now in progress here. Pray for the blessings of God upon our work.

Your sanctified brethren,

Wm. G. Schell & B. E. Warren.

Ridgeville, O., Aug. 27, 1892.

We are happy to report that the little camp meeting at Jerry City was a glorious success from beginning to end. O praise God for the victory we have through our Lord Jesus Christ! Many souls were saved from the powers of the enemy. The real Spirit of God was manifest during the entire meeting, and we feel confident the work accomplished during this meeting will last through eternity. On Thursday evening we followed the example of the Lord in the holy ordinances of his house; about thirty saints were present to take a part in this holy exercise. This service was accomplished amid the shouts and praises of God. Father Spray conveyed us to the next meeting. Let all the saints everywhere pray for us.

Your brethren in Christ,

Thos. Carter & H. C. Wickersham.

NORWOOD CAMP MEETING.

This glorious convocation has come and gone, and we have many things to praise God for. The meeting was good from the first service to the last; it was a glorious victory. At first there did not seem to be perfect harmony and unity among all who professed the holiness of God, but after a few services nearly all things were cleared up by the Blood; praise the Lord! The attendance was good. Truly this was a glorious feast of fat things from the hand of God. Souls were saved at almost every coming together. Quite a number of brethren from Frisco. Ark. were present, some from Carthage, some from North Mo., and a number from St. James; also some from Boliver, Mo. and other places. All were refreshed by the coming of Bro. Warner. Quite a number of ministerial brethren were present, all of whom God blessed in their work. On Saturday night we had a glorious ordinance meeting, in which the power of God was manifested. Some who have been save quite a while had never had the pri-

vilege of being in an ordinance meeting before. The word was brought very forcibly to our hearts, “If ye know these things happy are ye if ye do them.” Oh praise the dear Lord! By another year the dear ones will be pretty well fixed for C. M. on their new piece of ground that God has given them. Holy fire will go in many directions from this place.

Yours, saved in the Lord,

Geo. E. Bolds.

Payne, Ohio, Aug., 25, 1892.

Dear Brethren: We have just arrived here after about six days’ drive; and we do thank God for the privilege of greeting the church of the living God at Payne once more, and are glad to find all in a pretty good condition. Praise the Lord! We also thank God for the privilege of stopping part of a day and over night with our much beloved Samuel Grow, near Deerfield, Ind. May God bless him and Bro. Courtney for their kindness to us in helping us on our way. We were indeed sorry to leave the many precious brothers and sisters in Southern Ind., but it seemed necessary; and to the dear ones at Tampico, Crothersville, and Mooresville, Ind., we tender our hearty thanks for your kindness to us during our stay in that part, and may God bless and keep you pure. We have you in our hearts to live and die with you. Your saved brother and sister,

P.S. To all who may desire to correspond with us, I would say through the TRUMPET that my address in the future will be Payne, O.

Dear Saints of God: May the grace of our Lord and Savior abide with you forever. Amen. We are glad to report that we began meeting in the name of the Lord near Orchard Grove, Ind., Aug. 2d, which was continued with grand victory until Aug. 9th. Seven consecrations were made, the sick were healed, and one old gentleman was delivered from the appetite of tobacco after having used the noxious weed for about seventy or seventy-five years. God bless the dear people of that community who kindly opened their doors to us. Our time was limited, but as the people are eagerly yearning for more of the truth we trust God will speedily send some of his flying messengers to that locality who will “cry aloud and spare not.” For any desired information address Sister Nettie Henderson, Orchard Grove, Ind.

Yours in Him,

Burlington, Iowa, Aug. 23, 1892.

The meeting on the new camp ground at Beaver Dam, Ind. was very precious. A great host of saints were on the ground when we arrived the first evening, and many came in afterward. We thankful were to find such a pleasant ground. Two excellent wells furnished good clear water in abundance, a great advantage over the former place of meeting. The work of salvation was going on well when we left on Monday, the 15th, for the Norwood, Mo. camp. We trust some one will write us the meeting to the end.

We stopped over one day in St. Louis in order to get rates, and were kindly cared for at the house of Mr. Henry Carter, 2325, Randolph St. They formerly enjoyed salvation but have let their faith slip since going to the city. May God restore unto them the joys of salvation. Any of the saints are welcome to stop there, when passing through the city. We reached Norwood on Wednesday, Aug. 17, found many saints assembled and great was the Holy One of Israel in the midst of them. The work of salvation had been going on and continued to the end. It is thought by them that attended all through, that about fifty souls were saved. Many also were sanctified wholly, and the good Lord was present to heal the sick. In nearly all instances the work of both salvation and healing was clear and marked, and received the glorious witness of the Spirit, and overflowed in joyful praises to God. On Saturday afternoon eight souls were buried with Christ in New Testament baptism, after which eighty saints participated in a glorious sacred observance of the washing of the saints’ feet, and the Lord’s Supper. O bless the name of Jesus for that sweet privilege! There were present as workers, dear Bro. Bolds and family, Bro. Wilson and son, Bro’s Stanberry, Keeling, Wadell, Sister Julia Myers, and others who are called into the glorious work. Dear Bro. Caudle reached the camp the last day, which was Sabbath, the 21st. We were very thankful to God for the privilege of meeting all those dear saints. On Sabbath just before leaving the sacred ground, Bro. Stanberry and young Bro. Wilson were solemnly set apart and ordained to the sacred calling of the ministry. God bless those dearly beloved young men; though young, they are already through God, efficient ministers of the gospel, and if they continue low down at the Master’s feet, will be very useful. Bro. Stanberry was chosen of the Lord to accompany us to the Iowa camp, and thence to the Kansas meetings.

We are much desired to return to Carthage and Webb City, Mo. after the Wichita camp: and they think of having a camp meeting at Carthage. Though we would love greatly to visit many points in Kan. we may respond to the above call, and, if the Lord will, in remembrance of a promise made to Bro. Pine, stop at Mesa City, Ariz. about Sept. 5. However, I am not sure but that the Lord will allow us to go on to Bro. Pine’s after the Kan. meetings and take some rest, and chance to recuperate. The will of God be done. But we have learned that it is better to stop and give this poor frail body some relaxation from labor, than to keep on until overcome by affliction. From Ariz. we expect, God willing, to proceed to the Los Angeles, Cal. camp meeting Oct. 13. Let all the dear saints of God pray much for us, and for the manifestation of God’s mighty power at the Fremont, Iowa camp, which begins to day. Amen.

Pittsville, Pa., Aug. 25, 1892.

Dearly Beloved Brethren in the Gospel Work: My soul is made to rejoice because of the wonderful love and power of the Lord bestowed upon his children. Feeling led of the Lord to visit the saints in the East, I left home Aug. 16 and stopped two days at the Beaver Dam, Ind. camp-meeting, where the Lord gave his children a wonderful feast to the soul, and many were delivered out of the hands of the enemy of their soul.

From that place Bro’s Kilpatrick and Daugherty came to the Red Lion, Pa. C. M. where we are at the present time. The meeting here is well attended and the Lord has given his children sweeping victory from the beginning. God’s word was preached in its purity, and the Spirit did its office work in sending the truth in great power upon the hearts of the people. The people came flocking home to Father’s house in great numbers, and received the satisfying portion to their souls. Many were healed of various diseases by the power of God, according to Jas. 5:14, 15. Some were under the anti-christ spirit from which they were delivered. Yesterday was a day of fasting and prayer, and in the evening devils were cast out of some who were possessed, and the name of Jesus glorified. We expect to see many souls saved yet, before the meeting closes.

Dear Saints of the Living God, Greeting: May the God of all grace fill you with his Spirit and keep you by his power from all the works of darkness. The meeting here in this place has been a grand victory for God. There were about twenty-five who consecrated, and nine followed Christ in the ordinance of baptism, and it was wonderful how the Lord filled those hearts with his glory. Others were under conviction, but were not willing to give up to the call of the Spirit and be saved. The fight was hard at first, but the God in whom we trust gave us the victory.

Dear brethren, we should remember that God’s little ones must be fed, in order that they may grow, and get strong. I would say that any of God’s ministers passing by this way should stop, and you will find a home at Bro. A. Sprye’s, and I think that a hall can be had to hold meeting in. God is working wonderfully in these parts. We now have nine calls for meetings; and I believe that it would be to the glory of God to get another tabernacle to hold meeting in; and I would say that any of the saints having any of the Lord’s money, who want to help to move the work of the Lord along, by helping to purchase the tent, you may send your countributions to J. F. Howell, Nishnabotna, Mo. May God bless you all with his fullness in your souls. Meeting closed here last night, and many parting tears were shed. The people here want us to come back soon and hold another meeting, but we can not do this unless we can get another tabernacle? God bless you all.

Yours for the truth,

A. A. Kinzie, C. W. McDaniel & Co.

Dear Saints of God, Greeting: After the the close of the Beaver Dam C. M. in company which A. B. and A. C. Palmer, F. E. Miller and others, we moved over to the Tekonsha, Mich. C. M. which was in progress, and our much beloved Bro. Eldridge at the front of the battle laboring for souls. We found much darkness and prejudice at this point. But on the Lord’s day about 2000 people gathered on the camp ground, and the word of God was sent forth in power and demonstration, so that mountains of darkness and prejudice were removed, and much good accomplished. The crooked were made straight, and also a few lost souls found peace in the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

To those who are of like precious faith: God bless you all in the fullness of the blessings of the gospel of Christ. The battle is still the Lord’s. While there is certain and unmistakable victory in every conflict, yet the devil is by no means killed, although completely thrashed. No sooner is he defeated at one point, then he makes desperate attacks upon another; but thank God, he is driven from the field and all he can do is to skirmish along the outside. There have been a number of desperate efforts made through Advents and others to introduce many spurious doctrines, such as “conditional immortality,” “soul sleeping,” “no hell,” and various millennial theories, but their efforts have proved fruitless so far, and by the immutable and eternal word of God we expect to defeat every thing belonging to the devil and the kingdom of darkness. The truth is deepening. Some have come in among us and gone out again “because they were not of us.” There has been a shaking up of those things that can be shaken, but those things which cannot be shaken remain solid and complete. Hallelujah! The Lord is saving all who comply with his conditions, and they go on their way rejoicing. The world is flooded with multitudes of doctrines, claiming to be out of Babylon. Men’s theories will not do whether they seem to agree with the truth or not. Dear saints, we admonish you all in the name of Jesus to be sure to adhere strictly to the pure gospel and nothing else, no matter where it comes from. Read carefully 1 Tim. 1:4; 4:7; 6:4; 2 Tim. 2:16, 17, 23; Tit. 3:9, etc. and keep yourselves free from questions that will produce strife, and that do not pertain to life and godliness. The advocates of these false doctrines seem to live only upon contentions and debates. We have never met one yet who has proved the possession of the Holy Spirit. They are such that have never been saved, or else once having enjoyed the love of God became disobedient by giving heed to these doctrines of error and lost their experience, but are still going on with their profession. Oh, how necessary it is to keep our eyes upon Jesus through all these seasons of perilous times! The tendency of the age is to substitute something else for holiness. The devil is satisfied with everything else but a pure heart. It means much to keep within the limits of truth, the real sanctifying truth which alone can make men free. Thank God for the plain path of truth. We are all well and very busy. The work here becomes greater continually. Pray earnestly for us, dear ones, that we may be used only to the honor of our God.

Your brother and sister, separated unto the gospel,

J. W. & J. Byers.

Iona Baukey, daughter of Bro. Jacob Roush, near Rising Sun, Ohio, died Aug. 11, 1892; aged 20 yrs., 6mo. and 14 days. She leaves a husband, a babe, and many friends. Sister Baukey was saved in this evening light about six years ago and walked in this glorious way about four years, when she relaxed her confidence in God and gave way to the influence of Satan, lost the peace of God out of her soul; but at a very late hour in her sickness, which lasted but a few days, she returned to Father’s house, found her Savior in a late moment, and departed this life in triumphs of a living faith. She earnestly entreated and admonished her neighbors and friends to get saved, and especially her husband to meet her in heaven. Funeral services conducted by Bro. P. Spackey. May God help the dear saints everywhere to take warning and not turn back. It was only through the prayers and entreaties of the saints at that place that Sister Baukey was brought to repentance on her death bed. God bless the bereaved ones. Amen.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT.

COLDS, THEIR PREVENTION AND CURE.

_____

SOME time ago we gave a contribution to the Health Department about colds, which we have learned, are very dangerous customers. If people were to use cafe, so as not to contract them, how many diseases and what a vast amount of suffering could be avoided. Common colds are not simply the precursors, but the causes of much disease and thousands of deaths. To go back still farther, the primary cause is whatever caused the cold. How easily these causes might be avoided. If our declining race had not become so degraded in sin, bringing untold misery, and puny, sickly, weak bodies as the inheritance of so many human beings, perhaps so much care would not be necessary, as Nature herself has quite substantially fortified a healthy body against ordinary causes. As it is, these sound constitutions are not often found. Some have been blessed with vigorous bodies, but a reckless life of sin has ruined their health. These can often be restored by a proper observance of those laws which have been violated, as our bodies are provided with much latent power of restoration. Others are victims of hereditary disease, which perhaps the power or God alone can heal. We wish to say that God is able to heal any disease brought on through ignorance or other causes, but is not his willingness modified by the care we use? If it lies in our power to accumulate it, are we not expected to have a knowledge of how to avoid disease and to put forth effort to that end? God has promised to heal all our diseases, but if we are in error, we should reform if possible. Does he not require it? We will leave every reader to answer for himself, while we will now go strictly to our subject.

Colds can be prevented and cured. A few explanatory facts are necessary, which we will first mention. The skin is a very active and important organ of the body. It contains about two and one-half millions of pores, through which much of the waste matter of the body escapes. This is accomplished by the medium of water. The pores are constantly giving off vapor. We call it perspiration. To prove this, draw your finger slowly across a pane of glass, and notice the accumulation on the glass. When we exercise freely, or get very warm, the perspiration becomes so profuse that it forms in drops, which we call sweat. Now when the surface of the body becomes chilly, the skin contracts and these little avenues are closed. Perspiration is checked, and this corruption is carried to the lungs, converted into phlegm, and we have a cold.

The primary means to prevent a cold is to keep the skin active. This brings up the subjects of bathing, clothing, diet, exercise, etc. These should be treated more fully than our space will allow this time. Our bodies should be accustomed to fresh air as Nature intended, and not have a hot-house sensitiveness to it. We should rely more on animal heat than artificial heat. Then on going out into the air we will not be so liable to chill. Remember that to get chilly is to take cold to a certain degree. Our clothing should not be heavier than necessary; should be changed often, that the perspiration be not suppressed; and we should not sleep in the same garments worn during the day. Eat no more than is necessary. This will prevent an extra amount of waste matter to be thrown off, principally by the skin.

The most effectual means of keeping the skin active is habitual daily bathing, using soap and pure water. Bathing can be made harmful, not so well by its excessive use as by its wrong use. This subject should be treated on particularly, but we cannot do so now. Let all use the bath as it benefits you the most. If frequent bathing is any departure from your past way of living, lay aside all prejudice if you have any, and be not afraid of water, which is God’s appointed means of cleansing, and is even a symbol of the spiritual. If your body is too weak to endure the powerful tonic effect of the cold bath, use tepid or warm water. Some people seem to have a kind of prejudice against frequent bathing; but such prejudices are the friends to these cold customers, and they like to dwell together. Be willing to care for your bodies, and the colds must go.

The means to cure a cold are similar to those of prevention, but they are more thorough. What we have to do is to open the pores, or induce perspiration, which can be done in different ways. Any means which will bring the blood to the surface and produce active circulation will have the effect. We can perspire by taking a hot bath and retiring to bed, covering with plenty of clothes, or we can open the pores by active exercise, and keep them open. Drinking much water in connection with the above will assist in opening the pores. Whatever will burst open the pores and keep up perspiration will drive a cold out of the system. Finally, the body should be cleansed after sweating so profusely, and kept warm, as, in this condition the body is susceptible to a chill on being exposed to cold; but if possible, use active exercise as a means to keep warm. When one has a cold, he should eat sparingly, or what is better, he should fast, if possible. The old proverb, “Stuff a cold and starve a fever,” proves up false as far as the cold is concerned, for we learn that a cold is also a fever.

When people once become tired of colds; when they will do the things which are necessary to the health of the body; and when they have the enjoyable experience of doing them, we are sure they can then understand what blessings attend a compliance with the laws of Nature and God, which he has placed in the power of us all to obey.

Yours in Christ,

A. L. Byers.

==========

ONENESS AND UNITY.

__________

THE great cry nowa-days is, “We cannot see alike in this world.” Now before going any farther, let me ask you, Do you believe the word of God; and are you willing to abide by it? If so, then just lay aside preconceived notions and ideas, and let us consult the word of God for a few moments on this subject.

First we shall notice the oneness of the watchmen; viz., His ministers, and if they are one, then of course the people will be one. But if the watchmen are divided the people will be divided also. Anciently the watchmen were placed on the wall just far enough apart so they could see eye to eye, that is, so the enemy could not come between them. Now the prophet Isaiah says, “I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the Lord keep not silence.” — Isa. 62:6. Again, they are to “cry aloud and spare not, lift thy voice like a trumpet and shew my people their transgressions, and the house of Jacob their sins.” Isa. 58:1. When is this oneness to take place? Turn to Isa. 52:7, 8. “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth. Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice: with the voice together shall they sing; for they shall see eye to eye, when the Lord shall bring again Zion.” When was this accomplished? It is accomplished now in the coming of the evening light. The word of God now goes forth in all its purity. Read Songs of Solomon 6:10, and 8:5; Isa. 58:8. The question may be asked, What is Zion? We say it is the church; viz., all of the redeemed ones. See Heb. 12:22, 23. See also Isa. 51:11.

Second, Oneness of all saints. “There is neither Jew nor Greek; there is neither bond nor free; there is neither male nor female, for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” — Gal. 3:28. Who are one? “For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one, for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren.” — Heb. 2:11. Well, says one, how do I know who my brethren are? Dear reader, let me give you a sure test. Matt. 7:20, also Luke 8:19-21. “Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press. And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee. And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God and do it.” Question. Are these brethren all one? If we say No, then we virtually say that God did not hear his Son when he prayed for his disciples. John 17:20-22. Now listen to how he prayed: “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; [what for?] that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me and I in thee; that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.” What else proves his oneness? Verse 22. “And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them, that they may be one even as we are one.”

Again, He is our peace. Eph. 2:14-16. — “He is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; and that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby.” We say that there is no enmity in a sanctified heart. Paul says, “And he gave some apostles, and some prophets, and some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, [what for?] for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ; till we all come in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” – Eph. 4:11-13. “That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, by faith being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints, what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height,” etc. Eph. 3:17, 18. “There is one body and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism.” 4:4, 5. But says one, What holds you folks together? Answer. “One God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in you all.” — Eph. 4:6. If that is not enough to keep us together then no creed of poor finite man can do so. Paul says in Rom. 8:35, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?” Answer in verses 38, 39 “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Question. What is this one body? See Col. 1:24. — “Who now rejoice in my suffering for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the church.” Can we tell who are in the church? See Rom. 8:9. — “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ he is none of his.”

More oneness. First, One heart and soul. “And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness, and the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and one soul.” — Acts 4:31, 32.

Now, One mind and mouth. See Rom. 15:5, 6. — “Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be like minded one toward another according to Christ Jesus; that ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God.” We have one mind. What mind is it? Phil. 2:5. — “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” Says one, “Haven’t I aright to my opinion?” We say No; unless it harmonizes with the word. Jesus says, “I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.” — Luke 21:15. Oh, praise God for the oneness that there is in Christ! This mouth always speaks the same things. “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same I mind, and in the same judgement.” 1 Cor. 1:10. Why? “For we are I members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery; but I speak concerning Christ and the church.” — Eph. 5:30-32-

MY EXPERIENCE.

__________

Grand Junction, Mich.

Dear Saints: I am praising God this evening for a full and complete salvation that keeps me saved each day and moment of my life, free from all sin. O bless God! how much I have to thank the dear Lord for! I lived twenty-six years of my life a sinner; I had a dear Christian mother and she taught all her children to pray when we were small, and she would tell us about Jesus, how he suffered on the cross for us, that we might go to heaven when we die if we were good and would love and serve him. She also told us about hell, and if we were wicked we would be banished from the presence of the Lord forever. She impressed on my mind a perfect horror of swearing; and I can say I never took an oath in my life, but for all that I knew I was not a Christian. My mother died when I was but ten years old, and I was put out into a Christian family until I was of age; then came the trying time of my life; our country was plunged into civil war, and calls for volunteers to save our country co me from time to time, and what to do I did not know. I knew that if I should get killed, my poor soul would be lost. In 1862 my youngest brother enlisted and I went in the same Co., but I never was drawn up in line of battle, or went on picket, but I would think, if I should die my poor soul would be lost. In those times I would have given all the world if I had it, if I could only have been a Christian. At the battle of Cold Harbor my brother was killed and I was taken prisoner and sent to Andersonville. I was stopped outside of the gate, and could look into the pen and see such a dirty mass of half naked human beings, almost skeletons. My heart sunk within, and I felt that my doom was sealed, that I never would come out alive, and my soul would be lost. I never can tell how much I suffered in both soul and body, but God in his mercy spared my life. I made a promise to God if he would spare my life to get out I would love and serve him. In six months deliverance came and I was sent to our lines. Oh! if there is any one that ought to thank the dear Lord it is I, and I do thank him with all my heart, a poor unworthy worm of the dust. In the spring of ’66 there was a revival where I lived, and I made my promise good. God forgave all my sins, and oh, I was so happy. I felt that I was translated into a new world. My name was written in heaven. It was not long until I was yoked up into one of the devil’s sect pens; (they called it the Presbyterian Church.) Well, my companion and I lived an up and down life, sinning and repenting for 18 years, until about 8 years ago we got the light of holiness, and we stepped into the pool and were made every whit whole. Glory to God! I am free, out of Babylon, and Babylon out of me. O, it is just wonderful, wonderful, what the Lord has done, for me! The dear Lord has taken my dear companion home to glory before me, and I am ready, willing, waiting. Whenever he sees fit to call me, I am ready to go. My robes are washed in Jesus’ blood; he has made me white as snow. I am nothing of myself but just what he has made me. I was a sinner, but I am saved by grace through faith in the Son of God. Pray for me that I do his will in all tilings. Your saved brother,

William Stowell.

Dear Saints: I feel it would be to the glory of God for me to write my testimony. I know that the good Lord sweetly saves and sanctities mu wholly. I take the good Lord for my physician. I have been healed by the Lord and my husband has been healed. And I know I can trust Him for all things. I want the saints to pray that my husband may be sanctified.

To all the Saints: It has been some thirty years since I first found my Savior in the forgiveness of my sins, and have never lost sight of the cross, but for the last seven years have learned more of Got! than all the rest of the time. For when the truth was preached I accepted it and treasured it up in an honest heart, and can say that to day I am walking in all the light of the gospel, willing to be anything or nothing for Jesus.

I can say I am saved, sanctified and satisfied. Your sister in the holy war.

Dear Saints: I am so glad that God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life. I was once dead in trespasses and in sins, but about 13 years ago like the prodigal son I came to myself, turned to Father’s house, confessed my sins, believed on the Lord Jesus Christ with all my heart, and he was faithful and just to forgive my sins. Then about seven years later, when I heard holiness taught, again I believed and saw by the word that it was a second definite work, and I also knew by my experience that the old man of sin was not dead, but would stir up sometimes, and it was a continual fight to keep him down, so I presented my body a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which was my reasonable service, then he sent the Holy Ghost, the sanctifier, to my soul, and I was admitted into “this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.” So I am cleansed from all unrighteousness. I am walking in the light as he in the light and have fellowship with the dear saints of God, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son, cleanseth me from all sin. Praise God, for the sinless life, and O how I realize to day that after we have done all we can do we are only unprofitable servants, and as Paul has said, “By the grace of God I am what I am; not by works which we have done, but by his mercy, he has saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.” Praise God for the blessed renewing; praise God for full, free, and complete salvation! The grove meeting was a glorious victory for God, quite a number of souls saved. Pray for me, dear ones, that I be kept humble.

Your brother saved in Jesus,

S. P. Strang.
