The Holy Church of Cod.

__________

Church of God, thou spotless virgin,
Church of Christ, for whom he died;
Thou hast known no human founder,
Jesus bought thee for his bride.
Sanctified by God, the Father,
Built by Jesus Christ, the Son,
Tempered by the Mighty Spirit,
Like the Holy Three in One.

God himself has set the members
In his body all complete,
Organized by Jesus only,
O the union, pure and sweet!
Church of God, the angels marvel
At the music of thy song;
Earth and hell in terror tremble,
As thy army moves along.

Church of God, “Beloved City,”
Thou art of celestial mold,
Lo! from God, and out of heaven,
Came the city of pure gold.
Stones of jasper, dear as crystal,
Is the building of thy wall;
And the Lamb, thy light forever,
Jesus! Jesus! all in all.

God’s own holiness within thee,
His own beauty on thy brow;
Glorified in his own image,
This thy wondrous portion now.
In thee dwells the triune fullness,
Blessing all thy pilgrim days;
All around thee his salvation,
And before thee gates of praise.

Church of God, in heaven written,
Thine the risen life of Christ,
And the treasures to thee given,
Never, never can be priced.
Far above this world’s confusion,
Walking close by Jesus’ side;
Leaning on his loving bosom,
Is the church, his chosen bride.

__________

PUTTING AWAY SUPERFLUITIES.

_____

A superfluity is something unnecessary, useless, needless, such things as so often burden a person with crushing weights. In heathen lands are to be found persons who weight themselves down with heavy chains, fasten cumbersome wooden plugs to their lips, wear rings in their noses and ears, afflict themselves with sharp knives, or kneel upon beans, etc. in order to pray to their god. Now this is all uncalled for. But we do not have to cross the seas in order to find persons who are following in the same line, or in some ways worse superfluities. Many have the rings in their ears, weighing themselves down with the vanities of this world; some going about chewing, spewing out of their mouth a most filthy stuff called tobacco, or filling God’s pure air with a stench from the burning filthy weed,. Can any thing more nearly approach heathendom than such practices? Women murder themselves by inches as it were, by trying to form themselves into the shape of a wasp, and thus not only deform themselves but ..ause their children to inherit diseases which they would otherwise escape. Many through lust and evil practices form habits which are disgraceful to themselves and to those ground them, hurrying themselves on to ruin of both soul and body. May God help the people to turn from the sinful ways of the world and find Jesus a complete Savior from all sin.

But now concerning the followers ..f Jesus, the word of God is very plain. Paul urges them, to let their conversation be holy, their dress be plain, ..ot be conformed to the world; they ..re to walk as Jesus walked, to “lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness.” And let their religion ..e pure and undefiled before God, ..ad keep themselves “unspotted from ..e world.”

When professing Christians act like ..e world, attend church socials, fairs, ..arties, etc., talk like the world, by ..sting, joking, telling idle tales, dress ..e the world by putting on clothing, ..d other wearing apparel not in ..rmony with the Word, you may ..ark such ones as being in great need … a real Bible experience of salvation. ..ble salvation gives us the mind of ..rist, and we love to think and talk … him. There is a great difference ..tween a mere profession, and a ..al possession of salvation. A person may offer long and loud prayers, and make a great display of language, be eloquent in speech, an attentive listener, and all such, yet be without the spirit of God. One reason so many fail to live a Christian life, and make a shipwreck of faith is because they are so loose concerning little matters. They think nothing of saying “I’ll bet,” “You bet,” and other little by-words, and now and then “crack a few jokes,” dress just near enough like the world so as to miss their jeers and scoffs. With the practice of these and other little things, the mind is soon drawn away from Christ, family worship is neglected or loses its interest, secret prayer is omitted and the lean starving soul is crushed for want of spiritual food.

Dear reader, have you reached such a condition? If so, awake out of your sleepy condition, be up and doing and be not a stumbling block for others. Anyone can be an overcomer through Jesus Christ if they will obey the word of God.

__________

ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS.

_____

First. “What were the keys that were given to Peter?” Ans. The word of God.

Second. What sheep did Christ speak of when he said, “Other sheep I have which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and there shall be one fold, and one Shepherd?” John 10:16.

Ans. The other sheep are the Gentiles who would receive the word of God. “This fold,” the Jewish nation. “One fold,” the church of God. “One shepherd” — Christ.

Third. Where in the Bible does it tell about deacons praying for and anointing the sick with oil.

Ans. Nowhere that we know of. Nevertheless if God gives a deacon the gift of healing he has as good right to use it to God’s glory as any one else. That gift is not confined to the elders. Stephen was one of the first deacons, and God used him to do miracles as well as the apostles. “And Stephen full of power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.” — Acts 6:8.

Undoubtedly among those miracles was that of healing the sick, for that was the most common manner of displaying the supernatural power of God. And we read of no one finding fault with Stephen doing these miracles because he was not an elder.

Mahaska, Kan.

Dear Brother: I wish to ask the following questions:

First. “The carnal mind being put to death in entire sanctification, is it resurrected when one falls from that experience? If Adam, being perfectly holy (Gen. 1:27), by committing sin received the carnal nature which he transmitted to all the race (Gen. 5:3), would not the same cause produce the same effect in a perfectly holy person now?

Second. Some have taught that persons who have thus fallen from grace, that if they return to God and repent, pardon restores them entirely back to the place from which they had fallen, and therefore there is no need of them offering themselves a living sacrifice according to Rom. 12:1. It seems to me that one who has been saved and commits sin is thereby transferred from Christ to the world, and to the kingdom of Satan (1 John 3:6-9; John 15:6), and will therefore have to be first justified before he will be in condition to receive the Sanctifier according to John 14:16, 17.

Your humble brother in the body of Christ,

R. M. Haynes.

To both the above questions you have answered correctly. If in any instance, the devil does not put his works again in a person who has been overthrown by his wiles, it is because he prefers to take the place himself. Sometimes that seems to be the case. Men backslide, become deluded, and perhaps actually possessed with the devil, and yet remain very religious, and even non-resistant, so that no evil tempers are manifest under any ill treatment, and yet such are the devil’s chief instruments. These cases, coming so often under our observation, we have been led to remark that there are plenty of religious devils, yea outwardly pious devils, nowadays. But this only demonstrates the facts of prophecy, that we are living in an age of deception, in which both Satan and his ministers are transformed into angels of light. But all those false spirits will be seen to deny Christ in some form.

We pronounce Bro. Haynes’ reasoning and scriptural applications, sound on both the above questions.

_____

Turkey City, Pa.

First. Please explain 1 John 5:17.

Second. 1 Cor. 14:34, 35.

Your saved brother,

S. B. Heeter.

Ans. In the first scripture should be included the preceeding verse. Both read as follows: “If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.” — 1 John 5:16, 17. Unto death, in this scripture evidently means unto a state of spiritual death and wicked apostasy from God and the truth, from which there is no recovery. It must be that fearful and endless death into which a soul is precipitated by the sin against the Holy Spirit, which hath never forgiveness. This we think is implied by the words, “I do not say that he shall pray for it.” A case that God does not hold us to pray for, is certainly a hopeless one. All sin surely tends to death, but death in the above case must be a deeper death than the result of ordinary transgressions.

Ans. to second. In the same chapter, verses 23, 24, 31 it is said the “whole church,” yea all may prophesy,” which certainly includes the sisters as well as the brethren. And “he that prophesieth, speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.” Verse 3. Then all the members of the church, when they “came together, in one place,” had liberty to prophesy, to speak unto men to edification, etc. In. verse 30 the apostle says, “If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.” That is, let the party sitting by, interrupt the speaker, if he be led to ask a question or interpose something that may come to his mind. And changing from prophesy, which is speaking in religious worship, to speaking in the church for some other object, he says the woman should not violate their own modesty in using such liberty. “Let your women keep silent in the churches, for it is not permitted unto them to speak.” They may all prophesy, but to speak is something else, something outside of prophesying, or speaking in religious worship, to edification, etc. Most likely they are forbidden to speak out and interrupt the speaker, to ask a question or some explanation. This is evident from what has gone before in the chapter, and from what immediately follows. “If they will learn anything let them ask their husbands at home.” This explanation of the restriction proves positively that it does not refer to taking a part in divine worship, by testimony, etc., but that it is to seek some information, which her husband could impart to her at home. Surely it would be a shame for a woman to interrupt the speaker for such purposes as this, especially in that age and eastern country, where women were held in superstitious subjection and regarded as inferior to man. Long existing customs and sentiments fix, to some extent, the rules of proper dress deportment, in different countries, and to abruptly depart from what respectable society there deem decent, would be a shame.

Another asks, Does the Bible make any distinction between male and female in regard to washing the saints’ feet, and the holy kiss?

Second. Please explain Rom. 16.

Ans. to first. Yes, it demands that all “things be done decently and in order.” — 1 Cor. 14:40. And any person with ordinary intelligence and prudence knows that the above things practiced indiscriminately would be a scandalous, and reproachful affair. The Bible does not lay down rules of discrimination in those things, because its Author well knew that holy people have sufficient ideality and sense of propriety, to abstain from such a course. Another that forbids such a thing is this. “Abstain from all appearance of evil.”

Ans. to second. In Rom. 16, the apostle commends unto that congregation of the Lord, Phebe, a deaconess of the church which is at Cenchrea, by whom he sent that epistle. See closing words. Then he calls on the church at Rome to greet Priscilla, and Aquilla, and the church in their house, then follow a whole list of names, both brothers and sisters whom the Roman saints are asked to “greet,” or “salute,” and in verse 16, he says, “Salute one another with a holy kiss, the churches of Christ salute you.” It would appear that the whole company of saints were going with Phebe, and that on their arrival the church at Rome would salute them. If it were the case no promiscuous greeting is implied, as the brothers and sisters in Rome, and the brothers and sisters in the company would each greet with a holy kiss those of their own sex. But the apostle having said, “churches of Christ salute you,” it is very evident that he here meant a brotherly greeting by the bare mention of them. For surely the “churches of Christ,” when the apostle had been traveling were not all going up to Rome. Several things in the chapter indicate, that Paul was speaking of salutations from saints abroad, and not by personal contact. But when he says, “the churches of Asia salute you. Aquilla and Priscilla, [who were traveling with Paul] salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house,” – 1 Cor. 16:19, it is clearly not all salutations by the holy kiss. We have no example or teaching in the word for promiscuous greeting by the holy kiss, and to practice it were to disgrace the cause of Christ.

__________

WHAT SANCTIFICATION DID FOR ME.

_____

I was about seventeen years old when I sought the Lord for the pardon of my sins and found him to the joy and satisfaction of my heart. I did not join any sect then, but after I was married my wife belonged to the German Reformed sect, and I thought that I could make that my home although I never felt at home in that sect. After I had been converted, my father was sanctified, and you may know what an intense desire it puts in a man for the salvation of others. He and I would talk for hours, and the longer I studied the farther I got away from believing it.

But there came a time that God had let me trifle long enough, and I became so confused that I did not know what to believe. And so I just took my case to the Lord in prayer. I lay and prayed (it was night) I suppose a half an hour, and I besought the Lord earnestly that if there was such a thing as sanctification as the people were teaching it, he should show me some sign, that I could believe it. And so I gave up, for I knew that as earnestly as I had been beseeching him he would surely lave heard me. I turned around in bed to go to sleep, and with my mind made up to oppose a second work of grace harder than ever before. But the thought just came into my mind, now you have been praying a good deal, now just repeat the prayer that Christ taught his disciples to pray. And I began, “Our Father which art in heaven,” and just there I stopped to meditate what a wonderful blessing this was. And just then I was surrounded by a light brighter than the sun and this frightened me so I just looked up, and I saw a road that reached from earth to heaven and Christ standing on this road. I said, Lord now I believe, and now I want the experience. Oh I was so ignorant, I did not know how to make the consecration. But the Lord showed me that I must put myself on the altar first, then my earthly possessions, and last but not least, my dear family. This seemed to be almost more than I could do, for it seemed to me that this was going to be a real transaction. But I just looked at that blessed Jesus and said, Lord you are better able to take care of them than I am. Then it seemed to me that I must be baptized with the Holy Ghost and fire and it appeared that I had to be blessed altogether by signs, as I was such an unbeliever. As I prayed earnestly there was an extreme bright light passed over me. It seemed that I was dying.

This was seven years ago last winter, and this sanctified us clear out of the German Reformed sect, but we got into another just as bad. I thought at that time that if I was not a “church member,” I was no Christian. So we joined the United Brethren, and they elected me for class leader. I went against all kinds of sin, such as fairs and festivals, and Christmas trees, and. all such grab bag games that are of the devil. And pretty soon I had the preacher and a good many of the members against me, and oh how I did wish for something pure. Oh blessed be God! he has led me straight out of Babylon, and now I can discern what is the true body of Christ. Oh hallelujah to the cleansing blood of the Lamb!

Yours in Christ,

D. J. Lytle.

DIVINE HEALING
—OF—
SOUL AND BODY.

A New Book,
—by—
E. E. BYRUM.

_____

This book is just fresh from the author’s pen, and a glance at the contents is enough to convince any one of its interest and value to those seeking a more thorough khowledge of the Divine Being, and his dealings with people at the present time, as well as in days past.

The first part of the book very plainly marks out the way from sin unto full salvation, according to the teaching of the sacred word.

It presents the gospel truth in such a way as to throw a gleam of light into the pathway of the sinner, and enable him to see that there is hope beyond, through the mercies of a blessed Redeemer.

The BELIEVER is led to see the beauties of full salvation, and the joys in a life of Christian perfection.

THE HEALING OF THE BODY

constitutes the second part of the book. This consists of twenty-six chapters on doctrinal subjects, exposing and overthrowing false ideas and theories concerning the healing power in these last days, showing when, how, and under what circumstances and conditions God heals the sick and afflicted at the present time.

It gives a history and testimonies of healing from the time of Abraham, through the different ages, up to the present time.

The third part of the book consists of the

WITNESSES OF TO DAY.

These are wonderful testimonies of persons who have been healed within the last few years by divine power; such as being instantly restored to sight after having been blind for years; the lame throw away their crutches; broken bones are instantly healed; invalids who have suffered for years immediately arise and walk, after the prayer of faith is offered, etc. The author is personally acquainted, with nearly all the parties who have herein given their testimonies, and gives their names and addresses in the book, so that persons doubting the truthfulness of the same can write to the parties themselves.

It will be a precious volume to those who are afflicted in either soul or body. The chapters on faith, and also other subjects, will strengthen the faith of the reader, and aid in a closer walk with Him who is the “giver of every good and perfect gift.”

It contains 248 good-sized pages; good, plain print, on heavy paper. Neatly bound in cloth, $ .75. Library (half morocco), marble edge, $1.10. Send two cent stamp for special terms to agents. Address,

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

Welland, Ont., Aug. 4, 1892.

Dear Brethren: We are still trusting in God who keeps us saved to the uttermost. And still here in Canada holding meetings, the Lord blessing our labors, and waiting the command to march. The Lord has already, supplied the means to go to Eastern Pa. and have several very urgent calls from that country. Have no calls yet from N. Y. except from Binghamton and that not very urgent. And have felt that it might be to the glory of God, and in fact have felt led to go to the Red Lion camp meeting, and then go to Dow, Pa. and commence the Eastern work. But may stop in Franklin Co., Pa. and hold that grove meeting called for some time ago. Also I am looking for God to send some one with me. Please pray that the Lord may have his way and his leadings be made known at all times.

Yours in Him, ready to go anywhere for Jesus,

W. J. Henry.

Denver, Col., July 31, 1892.

Dearly Beloved Saints: The Lord bless you all abundantly in all of the graces of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our testimony this morning is, we are still trusting in the Mighty to save and keep, which saves me just now. Praise the Lord! We have had good meetings here and a number of souls have been saved, some out of Babylon and secret societies, from tea, coffee, tobacco and all sin. Praise the Lord! We go from here soon to Oklahoma, I. T. (Sheriden), and will be pleased to see Bro. S. H. Landrum, also Bro’s Moore and Alen. God bless them all for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

We closed meeting last night at West Denver with good success. A few souls saved. Five were buried with Christ in baptism yesterday afternoon in the Platte River, witnessing a good profession. May the dear Lord bless them and keep them true to God, is our prayer. We hold a few meetings at Bro. and Sister Speckles’ and then expect to go to Sheriden, Oklahoma. Pray for us and the work in Ok.

Yours in Christ,

Dear Brethren in Christ: May you all be kept through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Meeting closed at the above named place last night. The meeting was very fruitful to some of the saints; also some salvation work accomplished. We are confident there has been seed sown here that the enemy will not be able to pluck up. May the dear ones have courage to say No, to every temptation, and come boldly to the throne of grace that they may find help in every time of need. We had a beautiful place for the tabernacle, beautiful weather, good congregations, good order and good interest, for which we feel thankful. We would also thank the dear brethren for their willing remembrance of our temporal needs, which was liberal.

We expect to go from here to Norwood, Mo., to begin preparations for the camp meeting. Dear ones, be constant in prayer, active in service, settled in faith and passive in the hands of the Lord and then you will hear salvation echoes, roll. It will take all to make effectual workers.

Yours saved.

Dear Trumpet Readers: Praise God for salvation! This morning finds us saved to the uttermost. We have just returned from Bath. Had a meeting at Park Lake, one and a half miles south of Bath, Clinton Co., Mich. Park Lake is a pleasure resort. The proprietor gave us the grove with seats and lamps free. God did wonderfully bless our souls as we preached this glorious evening light and testified to God’s power to save from all sin. We had five meetings, Friday and Saturday evening, and three meetings on Lord’s day. In the last meeting we preached from Ezekiel 43:7, 8. As the Lord helped us to show the people how God was dishonored in the practices of Babylon, some of the sect people said that it is truth, and as usual some cried for their Diana, but we feel that seed was sown that will produce fruit in the future. The people treated us very kindly and wished us to return, which we will do if the Lord wills. We gave out a goodly number of Trumpets which will preach mighty sermons for God. We start this week for Gratiot Co. to hold meetings. Expect to have a meeting at Banister which we will notice in the Trumpet when the time is fixed. I remain your brother saved and sanctified, and kept by the mighty power of God. Amen.

To the Saints of the Living God: We report a glorious victory from the Walkerton grove meeting. Bro’s Achor and Lundy failing to reach this point, the Lord sent Bro. Dillon and Co. Every thing was in order and meeting commenced according to the appointment. Conviction was on the people from the beginning. God gave liberty and power in preaching the word. Attendance and attention was good. Interest of the day meetings increased until Friday, the 29th, when seven were buried by baptism, while perhaps more than one-hundred witnessed the scene; after which the ordinance service was held in Bro. Jno. Forsythe’s house. Thirty-seven in all took part. God was there to verify his promise and we axe happy in our obedience. Immediately meeting began in the school house near by and the congregation listened eagerly to the pure word. Bro. Dillon and Co. left on the morning train for the Melrose, Ohio grove meeting. Meeting continued and Sunday was a high day in Zion. About twenty consecrations were made at the altar during the day. Among the rest Dr. Neville returned to Father’s house. The last service was held in the grove Tuesday night, Aug. 3. Lord willing, baptizing will again be attended to Sunday, Aug. 7.

Yours, “joyful in glory,”

The Saints of the Most High: The meetings are yet in progress in this wicked city. We have daily meetings at 2:30 P. M. Street meetings at 7:30 and then return to the tent at 8 P. M. Good interest and order generally. Many drunkards come to the tent from the street meetings and some get saved. O how wonderfully God can save a wretched soul! The Lord is adding to the church, believers are being sanctified and some healed of their bodily infirmities. Fourteen were baptized since our last report. The truth is rooting down into many hearts. Among those who are accepting the evening light, there are three or four preachers who have renounced Babylon and are hand and heart in the work. Sect holiness in the city has run its course and there are a number of dear honest hearts looking upon this movement with much interest and will be ready to accept the light as soon as they are thoroughly convinced that we have no sectish yoke to impose upon them. How true the words of the prophet: “The yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.” Many of the dear ones have truly had the anointing but unconsciously permitted themselves to be yoked up in the holiness sect, but when they hear the pure gospel there is an amen in their hearts and they like poor hungry children, relish the unadulterated food, and loose themselves from the bands of their necks. Bro’s Annis and Gates from Arkansas City Kan. spent a few days with us recently on their way to Oregon. May they be used mightily for God, they expect to be back to Kan. in time for the Wichita C. M. O the great field! who is ready for the sacrifice? who will say, “Send me”? Make haste! make haste! the judgment is coming! it will soon be too late!.

Hayden, Ind., Aug. 2, 1892.

Dearly Beloved: We are rejoicing in God this day for complete victory in our souls. Since our last writing we have been engaged in the work of the Lord as follows: July 9, I left home in company with Bro. Geo. W. Howard and wife, who had recently come from Ohio to these parts to labor in the vineyard of the Master, for Moorsville, Floyd Co., Ind. to hold the grove meeting at that place. The meeting was a glorious one. The general attendance was not large, but some of the most intelligent and influential citizens came and their hearts were won to the truth. Thursday the 14th we were made to rejoice by the coming of my wife and children, this being the first meeting she has had opportunity to attend since the holidays, except at home. Two professed pardon and the church was greatly strengthened. Bio. W. B. Schreiber was ordained as elder and Bro. R. Z. Moor, deacon of the church of the living God at Mooresville. Next day we took train, Bro Geo. and Sister Anna Howard and my wife for Crothersville, Ind where they began a meeting about five miles southwest of town in a school house Thursday night, 21st, and I came home and spent the time in hay harvest and other manual labor. Returned July 24, and found them in the midst of a glorious revival; the people could not all get in the school house, so the seats were removed to the shade in the grove, in the school lot where the meeting was continued with increased interest. It was a very busy time with farmers in the midst of hay harvest, yet much wearied with labor they would come to the little grove to near the word of God and some were more than a thousand times repaid by bowing at the altar, confessing their sins and getting salvation, the number being about fourteen converted, one or two sanctified up to the date of my departure the 31st. May God bless that dear people for their kindness to us. Bro. Geo. and his wife remained to carry on the meeting as long as the Lord wills. We expect to be at the Beaver Dam camp meeting the Lord willing. Pray for us.

Yours in Christ,

J. N. & Geo. W. Howard & Co.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT.

CARE.

_____

Text. — Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” — 1 Pet. 5:7.

As our bodies are the temples of God to be inhabited by the indwelling trinity, and as the functions of our bodies are the mediums through which God brings knowledge to our intellectual or rational being, thereby preparing us for the greatest possible degree of usefulness; and as the functions of our physical being depend upon physical soundness, we can readily see the vast import of strict obedience to the commands of God, respecting health laws. Because not only our present but our eternal welfare is at stake, not the physical alone, but also the spiritual, as they are closely allied. Hence we see the manifold wisdom of God in providing the divine healing for soul and body, through Jesus Christ. Though our bodies are invested with a repairing system through imprudence, negligence, willful disobedience, ignorance, etc., the system is overtaxed. So the breaches are more than the system can repair.

Care, trouble, and sorrow, — the former being the foundation for the latter two, — work more disaster in the physical and mental being of the human family than many are aware of. Cares — keep people away from the feet of Jesus where they can hear his word, as was the case with Martha. Martha received him [Jesus] into her house, and she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? Bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things; but one thing is needful. Ah! dear reader, is this not your experience? Is this your need? “Casting all your care upon him for he careth for you,” and then sit at Jesus’ feet and hear his word. Just think of it, the son of God, the King of glory there, a chance to sit at his feet and hear his word, and “learn of him who was meek and lowly in spirit,” whose yoke is easy and his burden light. And care kept her away, denied her the glorious privilege, and more than that, this care caused her to want her sister deprived of this soul feast of hearing Jesus’ words. How true you that are bowed down with care, are not only depriving yourselves of happiness, but others around you. Instead of a blessing you are a curse to those with whom you associate. Now listen to what Jesus says of Mary. “Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” — Luke 10:38-42. He would not deny her of the wonderful privilege she was then enjoying, by bidding her to shoulder up some of Martha’s cares.

Cares also choke out the good seed of the kingdom. — Mark 4:19. The care here spoken of and that which is so destructive in its nature is that great anxiety to accomplish certain ends, setting our stakes and hazzarding our lives to make every thing bend to them. I can speak from experience and by observation as to how cares act upon the physical and mental being. Instead of the mind being stayed on God, a great load rests on the mind. A great amount of blood is sent to the brain, causing headache, a tired feeling about the brain, and not sufficient blood left to carry on digestion. Hence indigestion, a morbid liver, followed by a whole catalogue of diseases. One of the most frequent diseases caused by care is nervous debility, and doctors can scarcely do anything for it. Oh the victims of disease caused by care! It is appalling. The whole world with but few exceptions are under its iron grasp. And many who profess to serve God are its slaves. You can see it upon their faces. The show of their countenances doth witness against them. How marked it is upon many mothers! How much they need to cast all their care upon him! Some mothers may say, Who will look after the wants of my children if I cast all my care upon Christ? You can, and have the Lord to help you, and you will be a great deal better qualified than ever before; so instead of a burden it will be a pleasure to do what you have been doing for your family. And you will be happy and joyful instead of gloomy and sad. I cannot describe the blessing there is in casting all my care on Christ. It is such a benefit spiritually, mentally and physically. Dear reader, I exhort you to try it.

Many people accumulate so much work around them, they, think it must be done, and so they pitch into it with all their might until ambition runs away with their judgment. They are soon broken down, yea, in middle age, and sometimes in youth. What is the cause? Ans. Care. have seen people work sixteen to eighteen hours a day and when they would come to family prayer half of the family would go to sleep on their knees. Two or three hours hard work are put in before breakfast, and they are too tired again to pray an acceptable prayer unto God. How God dishonoring! They ask God to teach them his ways, and what a stupid thing he would have to teach, the whole being worn threadbare the whole year round. Already too stupid to hear the Lord say, “One thing yet is needful,” rich in this world’s goods, but poor and blind and naked, and loaded down with cares. Paul says, “Let your moderation be known unto all men.” There is none in the above to be known. “Be careful for nothing.” — Phil. 4:6. You poor careworn professor, come to God and let him save you from all your load of care. Yea, thy health shall spring forth speedily. And poor sinner, repent of your sins and give your heart to God and let him take away thy burden of guilt and care, and bring-health and’ cure to your body and soul. Oh that I could cause this careworn world to hear, “Cast all your care upon him, for he careth for you.” Amen.

SAVED AS BY FIRE.

_____

If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s works shall be burned he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. — 1 Cor. 3:14, 15.

In order to understand the above scripture we must know something about the nature of the fire, works, etc. of which the apostle was speaking.

Fire is a symbol of the holiness and justice of God. “The Lord thy God is a consuming fire.” “Is not my word like a fire?” Jer. 23:29. The word of God teaches that he will have a peculiar people, purified, made white and tried. As gold is put into the crucible and purified, then tried, or tested to see that it is free from dross, so it is with the children of God; the trying, testing, etc. takes place after they are saved.

We read in the 11th verse that Christ is the foundation upon which to build. And when his messengers go forth and present the word in its purity, often many persons are led to accept the truth and follow Jesus. But how comes the trying process, the testing time, which reveals the quality of the metal, as it were. For “the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.” Persons may accept the truth, get along well for a time, then backslide when persecution or trials come. Such are as wood, hay and stubble, and the fire of his word consumes or cuts them off. Will such ones if they continue in sin be saved? No. But the one who faithfully labored to have them enter the kingdom of Christ, if he continues faithful, will be saved even though all with whom he has labored may backslide and be lost, being tried by the fire of the Spirit and found to be as wood, hay, and stubble. On the other hand, were they to prove faithful, the works of that faithful laborer would be as gold tried by fire.

FRIEND AND TRAVELER.

_____

Friend. Fellow Traveler, may ask you one plain question? Do you believe in the Son of God?

Traveler. Of course I do; does not every body in this Christian land believe in him? You might put that question to the heathen, and the black, but surely should not put it to me.

F. Well now, don’t be offended, but in a calm and quiet spirit listen to me. If you believe on the Son of God, then you have everlasting life, for the word of God says, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” And again, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life.” — 1 John 3:36. He “is passed from death unto life.” He is “born of God. 1 John 2:9. “The spirit of God” dwells in him, Rom. 8:9, for his body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, 1 Cor. 6:19. He is partaker of the Divine Nature. 2 Pet. 1:4. He has peace with God by faith in the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Rom. 5:1; 8:1. Old things are passed away, and all things are become new. — 2 Cor. 5:17. In fact he is made a new creature, being one with Jesus Christ in the resurrection.

T. Well, all I can say, my Friend, to what you have said, is this: If this is to be a believer, I am not one, and who is one? Where can you find them? I don’t know.

F. Listen! Christ says his flock is a little flock. Luke 12:32. And his road a narrow road. Matt. 7:13. And, Satan’s servants are a great company, and their road is a broad one; but the narrow road leads to heaven, and the broad one to hell; and forgive the plainness of the question, it is love for your soul that urges it; which road are you traveling on?

T. Well that is a home question, but you do really seem to be my friend. If belief is what you say it is, then I know that I am not a believer at all, and if not a believer, must be on the broad road. To be sure there are many others worse than I am, for I do not swear or drink, I go to my church regularly, and intend when I am prepared, to go to the sacrament. I read my Bible on Sundays, and on week days if I am sick, but as to any happiness in religion or delight in God’s service, I have none. And as to being at peace with God, I have thought that a man could never know that in this world, and so I have rather dreaded God, than loved him; indeed if salvation is what you say, I know this, I have seen deceiving myself.

F. That is very candid, and I do indeed feel deeply for you, and I tremble for you, for whilst it is said, “He that believeth on the Son, hath everlasting life,” it no less is said, “He that believeth not the Son, shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.” John 3:36.

T. Oh! my heart sinks down at that word, and the thoughts of eternity make me tremble. My conscience tells me, and often tells me, all is not right. Oh! tell me what shall I do to be saved. Acts 16:30.

F. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved,” and live forever; for he hath said, “Him that cometh unto me, I will in no wise cast out.” John 6:37. And, oh! remember when that poor wretched woman came to the Lord Jesus, and the pharisee murmured at the blessed and merciful One for receiving her. Oh, remember the parable he spoke: A certain creditor had two debtors, the one owed him five hundred pence, and the other fifty, and when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both.” Luke 7:36-50. Thus manifesting that God’s character to man was the merciful creditor; and in virtue of the death of Jesus, who died, the just for the unjust. God’s golden scepter of mercy is stretched out, and whosoever, the most vile, the most wretched, the most abandoned, the most profligate, that flees to him will be accepted; aye, and their very coming shall cause joy in the presence of the angels of God. For God himself, as the parable of the prodigal shows us, rejoices thereat. Luke 15:20. The most vile shall there find mercy; and be assured the virtuous are also debtors, and they need mercy. Believe then on the Son of God, and thou shalt live forever.

T. But must not I wait until I get better, ere I go to him?

F. No; go now, salvation is an act of free sovereign grace. It is not of works, lest any man should boast. Eph. 2:6-9. “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ.” Rom. 6:23. Death is wages, but life is a gift.

T. But has the believer any thing to do with good words?

F. Yes, the believer has, but the thing for you is pardon, and that is for Christ’s sake. It is to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Rom. 4:5, 6. But being thus accepted, then, by the power of God who wrought in his heart this blessed faith, he does good works. Love, joy, peace, meekness, temperance, long- suffering, — Gal. 5:22, spring forth thirty, sixty, and an hundred fold. He delights in good works, he seeks to abound in them, but you see they are not the cause of salvation, but the effects of it. He does not do good works to be pardoned; but being pardoned he does them. He does not work for life, but from life; so instead of living to the world, or to please himself, he lives unto God, and seeks to glorify him in his body, and his spirit, which are God’s.

T. Well all this is very new to me, but yet somehow it seems so true, and so right, and indeed so good, that I cannot deny it, nay, I seem to long to believe it.

F. I rejoice to hear you say so; and when we meet again, I believe I shall find you at his feet, whom to know is LIFE ETERNAL.

TRUE TO HIS WORD.

_____

I have just read Bro. Byrum’s book on “Divine Healing,” which is from the throne of God, and has been the means of enabling me to exercise the faith to be healed. One day I had seven miles to ride, and it being very warm I came near receiving a sun-stroke from which I suffered very much for several hours.

The people came to visit me and were much interested in my trouble, some giving one thing, and some another for my relief, but nothing seemed to relieve me. Once when all had left the room and I was alone with the Lord, this text came to me, “Is any afflicted among you let him pray.” I then just told the Lord what he had promised to do for those who would ask, and I asked him to take away the headache and all the sickness from me. Then came the words, “Will you believe it?” I arose singing, “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine.” And the people thought I was crazy. I was well in one minute. It is the truth; do you believe me? I sang and praised God all afternoon. O bless his name forever!

What would tempt me to forget such a loving Savior of soul and body? His was is the only true way. And to all who would learn of the true way of healing I know of no book that points out the way so plainly and helps a person to understand the scriptures on the subject as does the book on “Divine Healing of Soul and Body.”

Pray for me that I may have more faith. I do thank him for his goodness. Praise his name! O how wonderful is his love! My life is hid away in him and he will keep me unto the end.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel led to give a few word of testimony. Oh I do praise God for this wonderful plan of salvation. Oh it is blessed to be all given up to God. As the poet says, Oh wondrous bliss, Oh joy sublime, I’ve Jesus with me all the time. So many are preaching that we cannot live in this present evil world without sin. I will admit we can’t ourselves, but having Christ in us he can live this life for us. Bless his holy name! I believe the holy word of God.

I remain your brother, washed in the blood of the Lamb,

Wm. Brinegar.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel that I can glorify the Lord by testifying of his wonderful power to save our souls and heal our bodies. I am so thankful that the Lord is no respecter of persons, but will save all that will come unto him. We once belonged to the man-made church, but never felt satisfied. We were sick for three years, and when our money run out we did not feel free to attend their meeting, because we didn’t have fees paid up. But thank God he has given me a ticket to heaven without money and price. It is wonderful how the Lord will reveal his will to us when we are humble. All things are possible with God. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Pray for us.

Yours in Christ,

Franky Nichols.

Dearly Beloved in the Lord: May the richest of Heaven’s blessings rest upon you all. I feel that it would be to the honor and glory of God for me to write my testimony, as I never have before. Praise the dear Lord for his tender mercies toward me. He watched me as I was straying away from my sweet home, and when he saw what I was doing, he used his chastening rod on me, for which I give him all the praise. I praise his holy name for saving such an unworthy being. He is such a mighty physician, he cleanses us from all unrighteousness, and healeth us of all our diseases. It has been three years since the dear Lord spoke peace to my soul. About two years ago our little girl was taken down with the rheumatism, and we obeyed the word. We called in the elders of the church and by the laying on of hands in the name of the Lord Jesus she was healed. Shortly after that I was taken down in bed and was very sick for three days and three nights. I thought I would die. The Lord led us to call in the elders of the church and they got down in the name of the dear Lord, and the Lord was in our midst. They laid hands on me and anointed me with oil in the name of the holy child Jesus, and immediately I was healed. I arose from my bed and helped them shout praises to God. But I have seen weakly for some time and have been led of the Lord to ask the prayers of the saints that I might be fully healed and made strong in the power of the Lord.

Your humble sister at the foot of the cross,

Lucy Stephenson.
