A Petition.

_____

O God of light and love,
We come with songs of praise to thee!
Attune our hearts, now, from above,
With Heaven’s purest melody:
Let seraphs chant the strain,
That holy saints of earth may swell,
And waft the cadence back again,
As thus their gratitude they tell.

The treasures of thy grace
In earthly temples thou hast poured,
That all our faith and trust we place
In keeping of our righteous Lord:
Then look in pity down —
Remember Thou our human frame;
Tho’ dust, we give to thee renown,
And glorify thy matchless name.

These earthen vessels, Lord,
May break beneath time’s ruthless hand;
But by thy great, eternal Word,
The life encased within, shall stand
When touched by pow’r divine.
’Tis strange and wonderful, but true,
Thou dost these issues thus combine.
And from dead natures create new.

Help us, dear Lord, aright,
Thy wondrous dying love to sing;
That streams of Joy and floods of light,
We now to sinners’ hearts may bring.
Let songs triumphant smile
Reign over souls of fallen men;
That those who’ve pined in drear exile
May find their Father’s house again.

__________

CALLED AND SENT.

_____

WE are especially led to teach in this article the call to the ministry of the word; who are called and how they may know it, and who are chosen and sent, and how they may understand it.

First, the importance of this great mission of preaching the gospel.

“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth.” Isa. 52 7.

“Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Matt. 18:18.

“He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.” Matt. 10:40.

“If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God.” They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him. Psa. 126:6.

God first CALLS, then CHOOSES, then SENDS FORTH.

CALLED: “And Jesus walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me. and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets and followed him.” Matt. 4:18, 20.

“And Paul trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city. and it shall be told thee what thou must do.” Acts. 9:6.

CHOSEN: “And when it was day. He called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles.” Luke 6:13.

“Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you and ordained you that ye should go out and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.” John 15:16. “For many are called, but few chosen.” Mat. 20:16.

But the Lord said unto Ananias, go thy way, for he is a chosen vessel unto me to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel.” Acts 9:15.

SENT. “These twelve Jesus sent forth.” Mat. 10:5. “After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place whither he himself would come. Luke 10:1. “How shall they preach except they be sent?” Rom. 10:15.

Now, who are called, and how are they called, and how do they know they are called?

All the examples of the Bible are those who have, either themselves or their parents or both, earnestly sought after God, in a marked manner, beyond others in the day in which they lived. This can be readily seen by reading the record of the early life of any of God’s chosen men in the word of God. The same is true today. God is not looking on the outward appearance, but is looking on the purposes and willingness of the heart. God calls us by speaking in unmistakable tones to our spirits. We may not at first fully comprehend, but if we continue getting down before God, the call comes clear and plain as the noonday’s sun; and if we say, Yes, to God, without reserve, we will be filled with peace and joy, and this peace will be more and more increased as we walk out in the light.

There is great danger here of not being chosen because of doubting and looking at our inability, or turning to love and look after the things of this present world, or becoming entangled with the affairs of this life, instead of walking out in the clear light and keeping free for God’s use.

When Jesus told his disciples to go preach the gospel to every creature he also told them to tarry at Jerusalem until they were endued with power from on high. So also with Paul. He was to receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost before going out. There are many men all over the land making sad havoc of the gospel of Jesus Christ, who probably have been called to preach but have run before they were sent. God says, Tarry! How long? Until ye are endued with an education of four or six years in college? Until ye bury your father, or accomplish any other worldly achievment? No! Until ye be endued with POWER FROM ON HIGH! We want to say right here, that the ENDUEMENT of power is not every manifestation of the Holy Spirit. The ENDUEMENT is not for the cleansing of our hearts from sin. It is the blood that cleanseth us through. The body is the temple for the Holy Spirit to dwell in and must be presented a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto God, and our hearts purified by faith in the blood of Jesus, before we are endued with power from on high. We will not receive this if we are consecrated to follow the creeds and doctrines of men, and to please men. “But ye have an unction from the Holy One and know all things.” “But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.” 1 John 2:20, 27. But we must tarry until we receive it. It is very seldom we are sent out as soon as we receive this. Jesus was led up into the wilderness to be tempted forty days of the devil; the apostles and the people continued steadfastly in the apostles, doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers, but afterward went every where preaching the word. Paul tarried certian days with the disciples and straightway preached Christ in the synagogue.

When the time comes for the called and chosen to be sent out, God brings on to the soul the burden and divine conviction, and a clear indication of its field of labor. God is saying to them, “Go to the work whereunto I have called you;’’ and when the soul truly yields, it is filled with peace which increases as they walk in the light. As the one now sent makes preparations and starts out, the Lord begins to open up his way, and all mountains of difficulties vanish before him like smoke before the wind, and he realizes that the God of heaven is carrying him in his bosom. As this one continues to walk humbly before his God and be led by the Holy Spirit, and fights the good fight of faith, and does not entangle himself with the affairs of this life, he will have the constant assurance in his soul that his heavenly Father is pleased with him. He is not to judge his calling by his apparent success, but by the inward evidence of the Spirit of God in his soul. God wants us neither to be puffed up nor discouraged. Remember being sent out comes not from our own desires, nor the desires of men, but comes direct from God, and he can and does make it very plain when he is ready for us to go; but we need to get down very low before him.

We must not confound a desire to save souls, or an awakened sympathy, with a call to go out to preach the word; for soon we would be defeated and find ourselves in the wrong place. But when God calls a man and sends him forth, he knows it of a truth, and he goes forth clothed with the authority of Heaven, and while he is faithful nothing can stand before him. There are many sad cases of those whom God has called and sent out, who have turned back to the things of this world, and some other man has taken their crown. The call to a foreign field and the sending forth is a distinct call. This was true of Peter, Paul and Barnabas. God knows, and we know this is not a field for a novice, and it must be men and women who are willing to endure hardness as faithful soldiers of Jesus Christ. It requires a special fitness from God. Several brethren have said to me with tears in their eyes while they have embraced me, that they believed God had called them to go with me in the Mexican work. They had a desire and a sympathy, but it was not a divine call for that field. Some have had the call, but got entangled and could not go. Those who have gone have had a deep settled conviction that has reached a certainty as clear as when justified or sanctified. There will often, no doubt, be many temptations of the devil to tell us we are not called nor sent; but having once known this clearly from the Lord, all we have to do is to give our testimony of God’s dealings with us, and the devil will leaves us. Praise God forever!

B. F. Elliott.

__________

DYING WITHOUT HOPE.

_____

THESE affecting lines tell the sad story of a young and beautiful lady who surrendered all to Christ, received pardon and was happy in his love. But she was opposed by her father. At last he induced her to give up her Savior, by giving her costly jewels and rich and fashionable attire. Not long after, she died unsaved. She wore the baubles of vanity and pride for a short time, but she lost forever the white robe and crown of heaven.

“Go bring me,” said the dying fair.
With anguish in her tone,
“Those robes and jewels rare —
Go bring them, every one.”
They strewed them on her dying bed.
Those robes of princely cost.
“Father,” with bitterness she said,
“For these my soul is lost.”

“With glorious hopes I once was blast,
Nor feared the gaping tomb;
With heaven already in my breast,
I looked for heaven to come.
I heard a Savior’s pard’ning voice;
My soul was filled with peace;
Father, you bought me with these toys,
I bartered heaven for these.

“Take them, they are the price of blood;
For them I lost my soul;
For them must bear the wrath of God,
While ceaseless ages roll.
Remember, when you look on these,
Your daughter’s fearful doom;
That she, her pride and thine to please,
Went quaking to the tomb.

“Go bear them from my sight and touch;
Your gifts I here restore;
Keep them with care — they cost you much.
They cost your daughter more.
Look at them every rolling year
Upon my dying day,
And drop for me a burning tear,”
She said, and sunk away.

Yours, saved by the precious blood of Jesus,

Frank Weaver.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: I feel it would be to the glory of God for me to testify to what the blessed Lord has done for me. He has gloriously delivered me from Babylon, and placed me on the solid rock Christ Jesus. Blessed be his holy name! He is my all in all; he heals me when I am sick. It is such a blessed thing to live for God alone. He said. Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Oh the untold joy of serving the Lord here in this life, and to think of all eternity beside, to be in his presence! Pray for me that I may sink deeper down in his will. Your sister in the one body,

Liverpool, Eng.

Dearly Beloved Saints: I am truly praising God for the wonderful plan of salvation, a salvation that is full and free, without money and without price, that saves to the uttermost. Glory be to his holy name! And it is a salvation that is able to keep every day during the week, and every week during a month, and every month during the year; for I have tried it and found it so. Well, dear ones, I have felt impressed to write my simple testimony for some time. I have no doubt that some of the dear ones have wondered that it has not appeared before now, I being one of the first that God gleaned out here in Liverpool. The reason has been that I wanted to come to a thorough understanding of the truth, and to be rooted and grounded on the Rock Christ Jesus, and to be thoroughly established. I felt that it would bring more honor and glory to my Savior’s name.

Well, it is a little more than six years since God for Christ’s sake pardoned ail my sins, and I gave myself to him in all the light I had, and he did wonderfully save my soul. I wanted to confess him before my friends, and so I went on for a time, doing all I knew how in sects. But many, many times my heart was saddened and grieved to see the coldness and emptiness of professors. I remember in the Bible class of the school I then attended, pondering over these words — 1 Cor. 12:26, — when one member suffers they all suffer. I thought that cannot possibly mean what it says, because it was never put in practice that I had seen. And so I went on, often sad and depressed, and at times felt it was no use to try; and at other times would ask my dear mother how it was I could get no food for my soul.

Well I wandered from place To place, seeking rest but finding none. I worked in mission halls here and there, but it was all the same. Then there came a preacher to the sect I belonged to, that did not believe the word of God means what it says, misconstrued the scripture, and said there is no such a thing as everlasting punishment, but that after so long time being in hell, they will be able to get to heaven; preached what he called the larger hope, and said people did not understand the meaning of the different words. But God says in his word, The wayfaring men, though fools shall not err therein. Isa. 35:8. Also read first chapter of 1 Cor. from 26th ver. God shows us plainly there who can understand. May God open the people’s eyes that are being led away by such men. Well I could not attend there, and so was transferred to another, thinking that I must have a home somewhere. But God soon called me out of that. I did not want to join in the first place. I felt sure God did not want me to, but finally I did so, thinking it was my duty to my friends. I am not condemning all ministers, for I believe there are a few who preach as far as they have the light, until they see a greater; but then most of them are not willing to walk therein, and then their light becomes darkness. There are a few men that I thought seemed burdened for souls, and seemed to do all they knew how, but when impressed to send them tracts and TRUMPETS, or even my own simple testimony, it is too humiliating for them, and they want nothing to do with it or the people. May God have mercy on them. When I read in the 34th chapter of Eze. what God has declared against the shepherds that cause his sheep to wander, it seems to make my heart ache. I think. Oh why will they not obey the Lord, and repent and serve God insincerity and truth, and in the beauty of holiness, regardless of what man thinks or says!

Well, I truly praise God for ever seeking and finding me. I was going down a street, and it seemed I was compelled to look up, and raising my eyes I saw a mission hall. I knew nothing of it, neither had I seen it before. I made up my mind to go, and so I went; and there for the first time heard the word of God preached as though every word meant what it said. Of course I did not care much for the place, but praise God, it was not long till I began to long for meeting time. And when I began to measure up, I could understand.

And now, dear ones, if any who may read this, think it is not necessary, or fanaticism, take the Word yourselves and ask God to open your understanding, and if you are willing for him to do it, he will be far more willing to do his part. Praise his holy name! I have a dear mother in the evening light, who is blessedly saved, and has been healed several times, wonderfully healed. Also a friend who was visiting us, God has wonderfully saved. She is standing alone and needs all our prayers. I desire your prayers in her behalf, that God may keep her steadfast and unmovable. My prayer is that God will bless and keep every true child of his. Truly it seems my heart goes out to you all, although I have not seen many of you, only the dear ones whom God has sent here. But we are all one in Christ Jesus. I desire your prayers, that God may keep me faithful and humble. Your sister, washed, made white and kept,

Agnes I. Smith.

On account of the assembly meeting the TRUMPET will not be issued next week.

“The Sabbath or Which Day to Keep,” recently published is having a good sale. Nearly 200 pages, 10 cts. $1.00 per dozen.

Bro. B. F. Weikel and wife, West Point, Pa, write that they are ready to answer any call for meetings in eastern Pennsylvania or New Jersey this fall or winter.

Bro. Bradley writes that Bro. S. H. Bozeman, Meridian, Missю has met with a serious acccident by the explosion of a lamp, injuring him so that for the present at least he is not able to be in the gospel work, or provide for his family. Let each one enquire of the Lord what their duty is in such a case.

Many are writing to know whether we have any songs in ballad form. We now have the following: “All Taken Away,” “The Very Same Jesus,” “He Pardoned a Rebel Like Me,” “I Will Not Forget Thee,” “Christ is All,” “It may be the Last Time.” These we will send postage paid, 25 for 10 cents.

Sister Fink writes from New Albany, Ind., that the work there is moving on in power and souls are being saved; and that the calls for the gospel are so numerous that they are unable to supply the demand of those who are hungering for the the truth. At least four companies should come to their relief at once. A large house is open at French Creek, Jeffersonville is hungry, Louisville, Ky. is starving for the truth. They have a hall there; we are told there are about two hundred souls out of sectism, who have not the clear light.

Bro. G. B. Collins, who is now holding meeting at West Plains, Mo. writes that he has made arrangements for the purchase of a large tabernacle for the gospel work in the South, which he secures at a great bargain, and needs over $50.00 yet to pay for the same, and the necessary equipments. He says if any one feels moved of the Lord to help purchase the same, send your mites to the TRUMPET office, and it will be forwarded. He expects to labor in the South, and will probably be in Memphis a good part of the winter, and desires some brother to aid him, who is a gospel worker, and a good singer. A single man preferred.

There is a call for books, tracts, papers and holiness literature in general, for distribution in the foreign fields, and also in various parts of the United States and adjoining countries. Many thousands have already been distributed, which have only increased the demand for more, and has also led many souls to Christ. A good tract or book often preaches a sermon to many a wayward person who would not be likely to hear the message from the Lord in any other way, and thus such persons are often induced to turn from their wicked ways, while the same message in printed form goes forth in Jesus’ name to point out the way to others. Are you helping to spread the gospel in this way?

QUESTION.

“Please explain whether Jesus had any of the carnal nature.”

ANSWER. The evil bent that dwells in unsanctified fallen nature, which is called carnality and depravity, is classed as sin. “All unrighteousness is sin.” 1 John 5:17. Sin that dwells in men. Rom. 7:17. To say therefore that carnality dwelt in Christ, is to say that sin dwelt in him. But such a shocking idea the scriptures positively refute. Heb. 4:15. 1 John 3:5. Many other texts positively assert the absolute purity of Christ. And it must be a very sordid soul that will seek to justify his sins by ascribing sin to Christ.

There will be an assembly meeting held by the saints of God of South-west Tekonsha, commencing Thursday evening, Oct. 18. To all that can come, a cordial invitation is given. For further information, address

C. H. Eldridge,

Tekonsha, Calhoun Co., Mich.

GRAND JUNCTION, MICH. ASSEMBLY MEETING.

This meeeting will take place, the Lord willing, Oct. 11-18, at the camp ground one mile north of Grand Junction. Many are looking forward to this gathering together of the children of God as one of great power and glory on account of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit when his saints shall meet to worship in the beauty of holiness, and sinners yield their hearts to him, and the sick be healed of their diseases. We believe this will be a time of spiritual advancement, and a deeper settling down upon the Word for a forward move on the line of divine healing, and general salvation work, and a better qualification for the work of rescueing souls. Everybody is invited to attend. If possible bring enough bedding to keep you comfortable. Eatables and lodging can be procured on the grounds. Come praying. Those who cannot come, do not fail to send up earnest petitions for the meeting and the Lord will give you your portion also.

Grand Junction is in VanBuren County, 29 miles west of Kalamazoo, on the Michigan Central R. R., and 55 miles south of Grand Rapids on the Chicago and West Michigan R. R.

ARE YOU SANCTIFIED?

_____

THE Lord has given me a few words of encouragement for those who have lately crossed the river Jordan into the land of Canaan.

“Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples [types, margin], and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.” 1 Cor. 10:11.

First of all, when a justified soul feels the need of another work of grace, he or she presents the body a living sacrifice according to Rom. 12. This means to give ourselves and possessions over entirely and completely into the hand and care of our heavenly Father, that he may do with it as he sees best. When we do this we are not our own any more. The first thing that Father does is to sanctify us, or destroy the carnal remains completely out of our spiritual systems; because when we place ourselves on the altar, Heb. 13:10, 12, we are made holy. Ex. 29:37. The altar sanctifies the gift. Mat. 22:19 And from the very moment that our consecration is complete, the work is done. Believe it from that very moment; and let God be true, and every man (and devil) a liar. Rom. 3. Keep believing, and praise the Lord for having done the work. [I received the witness the moment my consecration met God’s conditions, but I subsequently had to walk by faith for weeks.] We have access into this second grace by faith. Rom. 5. Have faith in God, and presently the walls of Jericho will tumbledown and you will score your first victory. See Josh. 6:20.

Remember now, that you are in the land of Canaan, a country swarming with “ites,” all of whom must be conquered. The “fight of faith’’ fairly begins now, and many a battle awaits us. We had no Cannanites to combat with until we entered their territory. So here we are, and the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites are all arrayed against us. Ex. 23:23.

When ye have passed over Jordan into the land of Canaan, THIN ye shall drive out all the inhabitants from before you. * * * And ye shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land, and dwell therein, for I have given you the land to possess it. Num. 33:52, 53.

Now comes the trial of our faith which is much more precious than of gold. 1 Pet. 1. Bear in mind that you will not find smooth sailing all the way, nor that it is an easy matter to “dispossess the inhabitants.” God says, I will not drive them out from before you in one year, lest the land become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against you. By little and little I will drive them out from before thee until thou be increased and inherit the land. Ex. 23:29, 30. God knows very well that if we were permitted to go on smoothly without a trial nor a temptation, we would become “puffed up” and take the glory to ourselves and say, “I,” “the beast of the field,” “did it.” The fact is, “without me YE can do nothing.” Jno. 15. Through trials we grow in grace and knowledge best. God says, “Ye shall drive them out;” and again he saith, “I will drive them out.” Our part of the driving consists in prayer and watching and fasting, and keeping under, and bringing the body into subjection. 1 Cor. 9. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Jas. 4.

Two facts must be borne in mind; first, that the “ites” are all on the OUTSIDE. Next, they are afraid. Ex. 23:27. These “ites” are “a people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak?” Deut. 9:2. Yes; many have told me that “no one can live free from sin in this life.” Now let us find out who the “ites” of old typified. “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness. idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulation, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings. murders, drunkenness, revellings and such like.” Gal. 5:19-21. Since I was sanctified I have had a pitched battle with several of the “ires” above enumerated, but they being on the outside and myself on the inside of the wall of salvation (Isa. 26:2, and 60:18), which is “great and high” (Rev. 21:12), I can say with Paul, “Now thanks be unto God which always causeth us to triumph in Christ.”

How often has Satan sent one or more of these giant sons of Anak to tempt me to give up my testimony and say, “there is no use trying!’’ For quite a while, especially when I happened to get a late start for meeting or elsewhere, the street car would be “just gone,” and old “impatience’’ would make quite an effort to get inside. But no! “I am sanctified.” would be my answer, and away he would go. Paul does not mention this one in the list given above, but impatience is included in the “such like.” V. 21. This was one of the tallest of all the Anakims with which I have met thus far, in my case. Some are tempted to resume the tobacco habit, but remember that this is not a desire for the filthy weed, for the desire was all taken away when your consecration reached a perfect willingness to give it up. It is simply old “uncleanness,” or filthiness of the flesh, another Anakim which Satan hath sent to test you. Rebuke him in the name of Jesus, and the next time he will not be near so bold, or perhaps he’ll never return.

In the past I have listened to one of God’s ministers preach, and thought. If I could only preach as he did, I would go and preach. But I remembered that he that had received two talents, and used them, received the same reward as he that had received live. Mat. 25. And while pondering over these things I discovered that old “emulation” had been around.

One time we lived next door to a very quarrelsome and disagreeable family who used to get drunk; and no matter how kindly we treated them, they treated us mean in return. When the “ECHOES FROM GLORY” first came out, we used to have singing meeting at our house, and they would come to our window and beat tin cans. etc. Sometimes the man would come to the window and curse and swear. One night something said. “Jump over the fence and whip the whole family.” But I remembered how Jesus had said, “Love your enemies; bless them that curse you; do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you.” And so we did, and “heaped coals of fire upon their heads;” and they are very friendly now. I found out since that my old enemy, “hatred” was the one who told me to jump over the fence. Sometimes “Pride” comes and suggests that you put an extra ribbon or a necktie on. Don’t!

And so we meet them when we least expect them, and when we are least prepared for them. But I have learned one secret from my hard experience, for on account of my ignorance, they used to handle me very roughly. And I can say with Paul that “we are not ignorant of his [Satan’s] devices.” They never get the best of me; in fact they never trouble me when I am on my knees in prayer, and watching, and I find that prayer is a formidable weapon, and one which always puts the Anakims to flight. “Trust” is another weapon. Trust is faith, and faith is trust. Remember that “They that trust in the Lord shall be as Mount Zion which cannot be removed.” Psa. 125. “This is the victory overcometh the world, even our faith.” 1 Jno. 5.

How many dear souls who were sanctified wholly have been overthrown because Satan prevailed in making them believe that the tempta-

Page 3

tion on the outside was carnality inside. God help deaf souls to assert their authority over all the powers of darkness, and “overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony.” Rev. 12. Always bear in mind that the “accuser of the brethren is cast down.” “The Son of God was manifest that he might destroy the works of the devil;” and if you have touched the altar, you are holy. This means an absolute eradication of all carnality. “Quit you like men, be strong” is a command. If you know that your consecration is complete, then believe all the suggestions and assertions and accusations of the enemy to the contrary, notwithstanding. Stand your ground, “fight a good fight.” “Our weapons are not carnal, but mighty through God.” If you have done all, stand. “Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.” Ex. 14. “Every place that the sole of your feet shall tread upon, that have I given unto you.” Josh. 1:3 Only be thou strong and very courageous. V. 7. Have no fear. “Fear” is another “ite;” one of the “such like.” John says that “perfect love casteth out fear.” 1 Jno. 4 Fast and pray until this enemy is also destroyed. “Let patience have her perfect work,” Remember, God says, “By little and little I will drive them out from before thee. Why fear? “No lion shall be there; nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon; it shall not be found there. But the redeemed of the Lord shall walk there. Isa. 35. And we need not fear the redeemed.

I expect to have many a fight yet, for I am still in the land of Canaan; but the more I trust in the Lord, the easier the conflict becomes. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. Mat. 24 Whose house are we if we hold fast the confidence and rejoicing firm unto the end. Heb. 3. Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God. and he shall go no more out; and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God. Rev. 3. I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me. Phil. 4. I am better equipped now than in the past, and I am getting used to the armor. See Eph. 6 ‘Blessed be the Lord my strength which teacheth my hands to war and my fingers to fight.” Psa. 144. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life. 2 Tim. 2.

Yours for victory in the name of Jesus,

John E. Roberts

Blue Springs, Neb., Sept. 27. ’94.

Dearlv Beloved Brethren: Feeling the hand of God upon me to preach the everlasting gospel, I feel impressed that I should have a co-laborer, some one who is all given up to the will of God, as I feel that our labor will be mostly in new fields.

Any one feeling led of the Lord can address me as above. Yours in Christ,

S. S. Van Buskirk.

We wish to inform the dear saints and’ all those in Linn and Benton counties. Ore, who are expecting us to hold meeting in your parts, that we cannot possibly do so at present; but will just as soon as the dear Lord will permit. We were called to Woodburn shortly before the death of Bro. Clark, and do not know how much longer the Lord will keep us here. Address us at Woodburn, Ore. Your brother in Christ,

J. L. Green.

Dear Trumpet Readers: To day finds me saved, for which I give God all of the praise. After I lost my companion I was directed by the Spirit of the Lord to come to this place to make it my future home, when I am not in the work. I expect to stay here until after the assembly meeting and then I am ready to go into the field. Would love to travel with some of the brethren, but we are willing that God should have his way. Any one wanting us to hold or help in meetings, our address will be Grand Junction, Mich. Your humble brother in the love of Jesus,

Leroy Sheldon.

Dear Readers of the Trumpet: May the Lord bless you all. I am glad to report victory over all the powers of darkness. Have been holding meeting in different places in La., with good results. Since coming to this place we have baptized eighteen; more to follow soon. The Lord is moving the people here. They are poor, but Jesus said, “Blessed be ye poor, for yours is the kingdom of heaven. Pray much for me and the work here. Will remain here till the first of Dec., the Lord willing. Your humble brother,

Floating Bethel.

Shippingport, Pa., Oct. 8, 1894.

Dear Saints: We are still saved and rejoicing in the Lord. The Bethel is again on the water and the blessed work is moving on. Six consecrations last week. Three baptized yesterday. The boat being left without workers this summer, meetings were not kept daily, but the little ones held services three times a week. The church seems well established. Bro. Harry Rogers, who was sanctified at the Venango C. M., is called to the ministry. I trust the Lord will give him great humility, to trust the Lord for ability, as he is gifted, and a graduate of Beaver College. His father and mother are also saved, and have done much for the cause. The people have shown us much kindness here. The congregation was large last night, and several held up their hands for prayers.

Dayton, O., Oct. 1, 1894.

Dear Brethren: We arrived here Sept. 25. and found the way almost closed for having meeting, but held a few services in dwelling houses, and also at the Soldier’s Home where the truth was received with great acclamations of joy. We visited the mission work here, and a number of holiness societies. Many among them are really unbelievers. Quite a number have seen the evil of sectism, but do not fully discern the body — (the church), and think that the time has not come to completely separate from sectism. There are a few here who are out clear for God. The work has also been hindered somewhat here by a man professing to be a saint of God. who anointed the sick and charged for it, this being contrary to the teaching of the Bible. It causes the people to look upon the true ministers of God with suspicion, and are slow to receive the truth. It will probably take a few weeks to get the work properly started here. Pray much for us; we need your help.

Arapahoe, Okla., Sept. 24, 1894.

Dear Saints of God: We have had the tabernacle pitched in seven different places, in midst of which we were compelled to be in perils of robbers, infidels and skeptics, unbelieving professors, false religions, etc. Although the Lord was with us in mighty power in presenting the word in its purity, yet it was a seed-sowing time, which reached many precious souls. Some were justified and others sanctified wholly. The Lord has provided a team for us. Bro. Joseph Rowe, of Neb. expects to take team and travel with us with the tent, and the Lord willing, we will go south and hold a meeting at Horbin and Dublin, Texas, where J. H. Norman will join us in the work. We will probably go south through Texas, New Mexico, and work around toward Lower California. Any one in these parts or near by, write us at Horbin or Dublin, Tex., as we expect to be there about Nov. 1. There will be three if not more of us in company. Your brother in Christ,

Chas. Bowers.

Ewing, Pa., Oet. 8, 1894.

Dear Saints of God: We are glad to report victory. Since we last reported through the TRUMPET, the hand of God has truly been good upon us in blessing with all spiritual and temporal blessings. Praise our God! From the Smithport C. M. we went to Panesville with a tabernacle and held one week’s meeting, which resulted in the salvation of a few souls, and the removing of much prejudice from the hearts of the people. Later on we opened a meeting in Starburg, which continued over two weeks and resulted in several being justified and a goodly number sanctified. Seven were buried with Christ in baptism. The meeting closed with a precious ordinance service, Dear Bro. Bennie Roe has been laboring with us in the above meeting, and has been a great help in the work, being much used of the Lord in preaching his word, and singing. He has now returned to the Floating Bethel. We miss him very much, but we humbly say, Lord send whom you will. We are now holding a tabernacle meeting in this place. May all the dear ones pray for us and the work. Our permanent address is North Point, Indiana Co., Pa.

Kensington, Kan., Sept. 23, 1894.

Dear Saints of God: The camp meeting at this place closed to day. It was a glorious feast never to be forgotten by the saints of God. It was victory from beginning to end. There were present seventy saints, and most of them worked faithfully for God and souls. The people were stirred mightily; many turned to the truth. Quite a number were saved; backsliders reclaimed; and all were benefited. Eight baptized, and others will yet be. God manifested his power in healing many souls. Meeting closed with a glorious ordinance service. Bro. Vielguth of Auburn, Neb. was ordained, with God’s witness to the same.

Ministers present were W. A. Haynes, and Bro’s Randolph, Vielguth, and Stover. Bro’s Stover and Vielguth begin tabernacle meeting at Kirwin, Kan., and Bro. Randolph, Bro. Haynes and myself are now holding meeting at Smith Center, Kan. Address us at this place.

Craig, Mo., Oct. 3, 1894.

Dear Saints of God: We are glad that we can again report victory on the side of the Lord. We have just closed a very precious meeting at Milton. Mo. which resulted in eleven consecrations; nine for pardon and three for heart purity, and about all came out clear for God; and on the last day of the meeting four precious souls were buried with Christ in baptism by our dear Bro. D. H. Carlton, who assisted us in the meeting. On Sept. 28 we met with the saints at Nishnabotna, Mo. The meeting lasted over Sunday and was very precious from first to last. On Sunday morning quite a number were healed in answer to prayer; and among the number was a little boy who was screaming with untold pain in his head, and through the laying on of hands and prayer he was instantly healed. And another brother who was partially deaf was healed so that he could hear, he said, as well as ever. Another brother who was troubled with a lameness in one of his limbs was healed and made to praise God. In the afternoon we went to the creek, and seven more followed the Lord in the ordinance of baptism. Truly the Lord is working with the people here, for which we praise him. Oh we do praise the Lord with all our hearts for a present salvation, and victory over all the enemy. And we do pray the good Lord to bless all the dear saints at Milton and reward them for their kindness to us. May He ever keep them blameless in his will, walking in the light. We remain your humble brother and sisters in the one body,

A. A. & Janet Kinzie and Rena Carmichael.

Cochran,’s Mills, Pa., Sept. 27, 1894.

Dear Saints Scattered Abroad: God bless you all. We are again happy to report victory in our souls. From the Venango camp meeting we went in company with Bro. S. B. Gilger to the Eastern meeting held at Chalfont, Pa. Chalfont is about twenty miles north of Philadelphia. We arrived there on the 14th and found Bro’s Jas. Kriebel and Weikel busily engaged in a lively little meeting. This meeting was a real victory clear through. Much seed was sown, which we trust in the future will bring forth a harvest of souls. A few consecrated and seemed to get clear experiences. Bro. Snow from Mass. attended this meeting. On Sat. evening, the 22d we held a very precious ordinance meeting. Truly God verified his word, “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” God bless the little church in the East. On the 25th we took leave of the saints at West Point and returned home, where we will remain for a short time. We soon expect to open the work in different parts of Indiana and Jefferson counties, where, the Lord willing, we will labor the coming winter. Remember us in your prayers. Your saved brother,

H. M. Riggle.

_____

Bostonia, Cal., Sept. 26, 1894.

To the Dear Saints of God: We are thankful to report once more that we are still in the battle field. This is the seventh place where the tent has been, placed since last May. The borders are enlarging. We do love to gain new territory for the gospel. At our last meeting, Chula Vista, there were a few souls added to the Lord, and a regular appointment established. There is a very important field opened by means, of the tent work this summer. These different places are open for regular meetings, and they must be attended to or souls will be left to the merciless greed of Satan. While we feel desirous of pushing out into new fields and opening new cities, yet we are persuaded that many who have but dimly comprehended the gospel light must be taught more perfectly and established, or else they cannot stand. This requires time and labor, and we are just now inquiring of the Lord for the mind of the Spirit, whether we remain in this portion of Cal. for the coming winter, or go farther on. The Lord has some faithful teachers here, but more are needed. The church here is being sifted; some souls are going with the chaff, but the pure wheat looks encouraging. Pray much, dear saints, for the work here. We are well and happy, and among the tried ones. Yours separated unto the gospel. Address 1021, 15th St., San Diego, Cal.

Danville, Ill., Sept. 30, 1894.

To all the Dear Saints, Greeting: I think it will be to the glory of God to write my testimony to the TRUMPET readers once more, since the Lord has called me as one of his little ones to take up the cross and follow him. Father has shown me since I last wrote to the TRUMPET, that I was to do missionary work to rescue fallen women; so I left my home in Michigan, Aug. 11, and came to Danville, Ill., where I expect to remain until Father says “move on.” There are now three missionaries in the home: Sister Mary Houskeeper, Sister Mary Metter, and myself. But there is truly need of more workers here who are filled with the Holy Ghost, and I believe the dear Lord has his hand upon some one already for this work. Let every child of God search her heart and see if it is not you whom the Lord would use. The harvest truly is great and laborers are few; but in Mat. 9:38 we are told to pray the Lord to send forth laborers into his harvest.

This is a wonderful work, and we need the prayers of all God’s true people, that we may have grace and wisdom to carry it on. We can do nothing of ourselves, but we can be used as instruments in God’s hands to do whatever work he assigns us. We have had some severe trials of our faith since I came here, but through it all we have been wonderfully blessed. The trial of our faith is more precious than gold. I find it very sweet to trust the Lord for all things.

I will say to the glory of God and for the benefit of some who may be hesitating about leaving home and friends and all to follow Jesus, that I had a very pleasant home where I hardly wanted for anything, and never knew what it was to live by faith, only of course I used to always ask God to supply every need. But God did not see fit to always let me live in that way while others were starving for the word of God; so he laid his hand upon me and gave me Mat. 10, and especially verses 37, 38 were impressed upon my mind. And true, dear ones, if we will follow Jesus we must give up everything, even the things which we count most dear. We must not have any idols before God. The Lord is a good paymaster, and he will richly reward us for all we do for him. He has provided my mother with help to do the housework since I left home, and has also increased her strength both spiritually and physically, for which I give him all the glory. As for myself I can say that I am consecrated to follow wherever he leads me. Bless his name forever! I desire you all to pray for me and especially the work here in Danville. Your sister saved and sanctified, and kept by the power of God,

Grace E. Stratton.

Dear Saints: God bless you! As it has been some time since I testified through the TRUMPET I feel led of the blessed Lord, this morning, to send in my testimony, to the honor and glory of God. I know of a truth this moring that the Lord saves me, sanctifies wholly, and keeps me from all sin and sect-confusion. Praise his holy name! and he is my physician in all manner of sickness. I have had no other help in sickness save the blessed Lord in about four years. I have been wonderfully, instantly and blessedly healed in answer to prayer.

We earnestly ask the prayers of the saints everywhere for the work in the South. We know of a truth that God is moving here, and some precious souls are being saved and delivered out of Babylon. Now may the Lord bless and guide us in all truth. Make me a special object of prayer.

From your unprofitable servant in Christ Jesus,

Social and Sexual Purity.

_____

THERE has been for ages past, through the power of Satan, a darkness that has held sway over the nations repudiating the holy love of God, and casting away the perfect law of liberty until the human race has been wandering in the fogs, yea, the night of despair, sensuality and every vice and crime that the arch-fiend could bring forth from the regions of death and place upon the records of dark deeds over which the paths of nations lie. The propensity of man is only toward a plane of licentiousness, sinking multitudes of souls far beneath the sphere of true love, morality and genial happiness; although there has been at every period of time some conscientious physician who desired the welfare of his fellow beings, or some man of God of other vocation who was impressed with the responsibility resting upon him to warn his fellow creatures of the great misery into which they are hastening themselves and their innocent propagation.

But the nations being blinded by the prince of darkness, satisfying their sensual and carnal-created passions have lost to a great degree, if not entirely, every aspiration for heavenly virtues. Rejecting the law of purity they have turned their course into that way that takes hold unto death, the consummation of which lands the victim into that hell prepared for the filthy, sin-loving soul. As the deaf adder they will not hear, though the warning comes plain and never so wisely: the result of which we see the creatures once pure and in the image of God our Creator plunged into the depths of sin to such an extent that on every side, in our very midst, yea, on our own person is seen the tarnish left by the flying venom of iniquity, hurled broadcast over this footstool of the Almighty. And if increasing with the velocity of the past century, ere long the strong bands of Satan that have encircled the inhabitants of earth will be drawn in by this Apollyon till all freedom will be something of the past. Bound by the iron grasp of this ruler of darkness we will be doomed to watch the young of every generation coming into existence not only born in sin, but deformed both soul and body, every one beginning their career of a few days and ending them in untold misery, having nothing but a depraved nature to portray the effects produced by the debauchery of those who beget them.

To those who doubt the trueness of these words, a moment’s reflection upon your past, and perhaps present life, will convince you that it is not merely a whim of some fanatical brain, but in dreadful reality we see that it cannot be exaggerated. The foolish modesty that has overcome the majority of the people of our land, that persuades them to say nothing of the evil they see, either to their companions or children, is but a delusion from the devil, brought forth to enable him to more fully accomplish his purpose of destroying souls. The great reason for the silence during the past is because of the universal depravity raging among all classes. The man in whose nature lurked the dreadful foe, sensuality in its many forms, could not because of a feeling of shame and guilt, warn his neighbor against the very thing that he carries in his bosom. Hence down, down into the abyss of despair are dragged multitudes of souls because there failed to be the proper attention given and warning against the great sin of social and sexual corruption.

Now truth has turned in the form of the pure uncompromising gospel of Jesus Christ; the church emerges from beneath the darkness of sectish superstition and ignorance. Arrayed in the beautiful garment of salvation, being free in Jesus, animated by the Holy Spirit, she is brought as in the apostolic morning, to the realization that religion pure and undefiled is the only remedy for sin, the only thing that can place that emanation from God — the soul — on a plane where power is received to conquer every animal passion and depraved nature. Having power over all the powers of the enemy we can cry against all manner of sin. And in Jesus’ name I appeal to every pure heart for an amen; as I say, from the church of God must go forth not only the warning against sin, but the example also of purity.

To every true soul I say, Awake! throw off that sham modesty that keeps you from doing your duty! Step out before the world and set an example of purity before all men. Your soul and conscience clear before God, you can thunder the warnings of God Almighty among your fellow men until there will many of them see their awful end, and escape the vengeance of an awful, but just reward of eternal death.

To all, and especially to the saints of God in the conjugal state, I would say, God is the author of every good thing; his all-seeing eye since the creation of man has sought out those things that pertain to man’s enioyment, and that extend his happiness. Marriage is a divine institution ordained by the God of heaven; and there is incorporated in the being of every man and woman (if not entirely depraved) a nature that longs for the sweet joys of companionship, and that aspires to a nobler life than that of a solitary and dreary existence. The Lord well knew of this in the beginning when he said “it is not good for man to be alone.”

To those who have entered the matrimonial state, you are — or should be — joined unto each other for life; nothing can undo the act; you cannot be placed in the position, by any means, you were in before you took upon yourselves that obligation to love and cherish each other until death. What was your aim in this union? Did you ever stop to think? Was it to satisfy some carnal desire? or was it to glorify God, and show his wonderful wisdom in union and purity, and to produce offspring, train them in the fear of God, so they will bless you, and continue to speak forth the glorious knowledge of purity and freedom after you pass into the unseen? Let us talk plain and to the point. Listen, all ye saints: What e’er your aim might have been in the past, some questions arise before us with all of their magnitude and importance. What is your aim at present, and what are you doing to elevate mankind? How are you living? Does your whole life correspond to that of Christ’s? Does every action glorify God? Are all lusts cleansed away? Does the animal passion of your nature domineer over the faculties of your soul? Do you bring your body into subjection to the perfect law of liberty in Christ Jesus? Is your life an epistle known and read of all men — nothing hid — and a safe guide for all men to follow? Are you temperate in all things? Or do you defile the temple of God? Answer these questions carefully and honestly before God with whom we have to do.

How can people who profess godliness expect to deliver their fellow beings out of the bondage of sin, and they themselves captives to sensual lusts? Physician, heal thyself.

It is a common belief that men and women because they are legally united in marriage are privileged to the unbridled exercise of amativeness. This is a very great mistake. Nature in the exercise of her just laws is as prompt to punish any infringement of her laws in those who are legally married, as in those out of the bonds. Excessive indulgence between the married produces as great and lasting evil effects as in the single man or woman, and is nothing but legalized prostitution. If masturbation or self abuse leads to such wretched results, no less does the promiscuous indulgence by those who are married. In the being that God created, and called man, there is a perfect workmanship showing the omniscience of our Creator. In man there has been placed a brain, “one of the products of which is a nervous fluid intended for the supply of the vital power inherent in the living body; when any special organ is greatly employed this fluid is diverted from its ordinary channels to the organ exercised. From this is clearly seen why insanity or loss of mind is produced by self abuse, etc. If amativeness is greatly exercised it is only done at the expense of all the other organs. This being so, it uses up the very life power of the individual, and the life force of the system is weakened, laying the body open to all manner of diseases, the very cause of so much misery, imbecility and premature deaths.

It is a widely spread opinion that through the gratification of the lust of the flesh the greatest enjoyments are obtained; and this excessive cohabitation in man and woman, has led to untold misery. Besides the inherent nature that only tends to lead the soul downward to a plane beneath that of the brute creation, there is everything conceivable brought forth by the enemy of our souls to bear upon the weakness of our frame. Reading sensational novels, indulging in thoughts that are strange to the law of purity, and many other such things will bring on a burning desire to satisfy the animal passion, and result in an abnormal exercise of amativeness which ends in remorse and woe — a wreck morally, mentally, socially, physically and spiritually. And the horrible enormity of this crying sin stands out in fearful distinctness in the present age; and to judge by the great wreck of lives and heedlessness paid to the laws of nature, we are compelled to say, it seems that the soul is of so little significance, and has become so small that it is located or housed up within the limits of the amative propensities of the inhabitants of this earth. The wife who thinks it her duty to accede to the wishes of a husband, blinded by the ignorance of his animal passion, and allows him passively to exercise daily, yea, month in and month out, the low and beastly of his nature, will find that it will eventually, though slowly, surely kill her. This murderer now rid of his victim, lures to his net another wife, to repeat the same program of legalized prostitution. And as the husband demands his rights from the wife, who only accedes through dread of consequences, the effect produced upon his brain and nervous system is as great as that produced by masturbation.

To the reflecting man and woman who through ignorance of the laws divinely ordained, have indulged in these things mentioned, and wasted themselves for naught — but despair — I would say, you know the time allotted for the preparation for your appearance before the great throne of God is very short, even as a vapor that passeth away. It is gone! Where? Into the presence of that great Judge of the quick and dead, who renders to man a reward according to the deeds done in the body. Do you not see the need of adopting a purer way of living? Through no other way can mankind so effectually fall from the plane of pure love and spirituality, as through perverted animal desires. Through the perverted use of amativeness the soul is soiled, fouled and debased and sunk into the abyss of dissipation in this life, and in the world to come, into the lowest hell. A pure, clean lovable soul cannot dwell in a foul, filthy, body. And such a soul is essentially requisite to complete a Christian. Therefore, O man in your youth, hopeful of the future, aspiring to nobler attainments; and woman fair and trusting, in Jesus’ name shun these legalized abominations of so- called modern civilization. If you have been overtaken already, Christ will deliver you. Flee everything but that which tends to elevate, spiritualize and fill your soul with holy aspirations. Man has through sinfulness of every description so blotted and blurred the pure and spiritual that is within him, as to continually be breaking these laws of God; and redemption through Jesus Christ and the restoration of that holy image lost by sin, alone will give us power to overcome all this, and give us a triumphant victory over all the power of the enemy, and cause us to bring our whole body into subjection, yea, every thought to the obedience of Christ.

Another great sin is that of abortion or ante-natal infanticide, practiced by many women to deliver themselves from the trouble of an ever-increasing family, more especially among those of the higher ranks of society, so-called. This sin is ever increasing; shall we keep still? No; the warning must come now before too late. The person who commits such a hideous crime ruins her constitution, hardens her heart, pollutes her soul and sheds innocent blood. And the little soul thus delivered from its home of clay flies from the family where it was not wanted, to the arms of Jesus who loved all such; and at the judgment of that last great day it will be a witness against perpetrators of such crimes. As it goes on in its existence of joy in the Savior’s arms, the shedder of innocent blood takes her ever everlasting abode in the lake of fire where all murderers go. We will ask all such, Why do you not wait and let nature take her course, and when your offspring makes its appearance, then by some poison, strangling or other means, put an end to its existence? You cry, “Horrible!” and well you may; but it is no more murder than depriving it of life before it enters upon its post-natal existence. True, you would before a jury be found guilty of murder and receive punishment for same, but this would be a trifling affair compared to the trial awaiting you at the judgment bar of the Almighty, assembled before earth’s multitudes, witnessed against by those little souls willingly and knowingly sent into eternity before their time. O God! awake people from their dreadful slumber of death, and help thy people to perform their duty in both precept and example!

To the fallen, let me speak a word. You have made a misstep, it is true; transgressed the law of God; brought upon yourself disgrace; but remember you are not beneath the notice of him who came to save the lost. Why is it that when a woman steps aside from the path of right, and sinks beneath the standard of true womanhood, that society points at her in scorn, trampling her deeper into despair; and her very traducer will from the same ones, many times, be looked upon with favor? Solve this mystery; can you? It is beyond my comprehension. Woman, listen! If you desire to elevate your own sex, be delivered from slavery, and raised to a position equal to that of other creatures, you must refuse to acknowlege any acquaintance with a man who has a reputation for licentiousness, except he repent and obtain salvation that will make him a new man. And instead of shunning that fallen sister, in the name of Jesus take her by the hand and lift her to a higher standard of life. Oh what an awful sin is being done in this very thing! When one is overcome by the tempter she then truly realizes the beginning of hell; and instead of trying to rescue her from this awful state you trample her, and by force shove her farther into the flames of despair and everlasting shame, farther on the way that ends in the regions of the damned from whence there is no returning mercy; forever gone, and you guilty for hastening info this misery, a soul which you might have saved and started on the way to glory and everlasting joy. A reformation on your part is necessary, to accomplish a right adjustment of one of the greatest wrongs of our social life. Do you believe me? For the cause of Christ and for the sake of perishing souls, I reiterate this again, LIFT UP THE FALLEN!

Another word to parents. Remember, upon you rests a great responsibility. Knowing the evils of this life, be careful to see that your boys and girls are taught in the right way; and that will be to escape the debasing practice of self abuse, and all things that are intended to ruin a life of usefulness. I have been asked by parents to talk to their boys of these things and tell them the evil of such practices, because the parents did not think they could talk to them about it. This is a shame, whatever the cause may be. Let parents live holy lives and keep clear of these things themselves, and they will find a joy in warning the innocent child to escape the devil’s snares. It is not modesty, but Satan that keeps you from doing what you should do. if you yourselves have been addicted to evil habits, remember the effects will be seen on your children; so watch them closely; tell them the result of such a life and they will — if only through fear — forsake such a course. All around we see people, young and old, subject to all manner of diseases. One after another is taken to the asylum, till these institutions are filled to overflowing. There is a cause; and the solution of the whole affair is self abuse. I will quote from a work I have.

“Insane asylums, whether the keepers allow it to be so or not, are more than half filled by the victims of this degrading vice.” Again Dr. Workman in his annual report of the Toronto Lunatic Asylum, said, “There is one cause of a physical form, which I fear is very widely extended, but which I almost dread to mention, which all over this continent appears to be peopling our asylums with a loathsome, abject, and hopeless multitude of inmates. * * * I have recently made a careful scrutiny of the character of the cases of insane men, on behalf of whom applications have been, and from whose friends and physicians details in our circular form have

been received. The result has been frightful. I hesitate to state the proportion in which — I feel fully assured or morally certain — secret vice is present.” Speaking of insanity he says, “I have in strong remembrance a case apparently chargeable to religion. The patient before entering here, did hardly anything but attend prayer meetings and preachings; he was away from one church and off to another, as fast as open doors permitted him. In the climax of this fervor he was sent to the asylum. We know how much religion had to do with his insanity; not more than smoke has in kindling the fire from which it proceeds.”

Oh the magnitude of this evil! Can you treat it lightly, or pass it over unnoticed? Remember there is a pending judgment. Can it be right, that through a fastidious delicacy on the part of those who realize the enormity of this ever increasing vice, the youth of our land should be permitted to plunge headlong into this horrible chasm of dissipation, with all of its life- destroying and soul-polluting elements? No! no! they must be saved; will you do your part to lead the lost to the Son of God and the power of an endless life, so they may escape the pits of Satan and the pangs of a never-ending death?

Dear ones, all of you who know the value of souls, and who know the truth and have received a freedom from all sin, leave no stone unturned in the line of doing your duty. If every one does their part — parents I mean — before long we will notice that a great portion of the drugs for suicidal purposes will remain in their vials. The penitentiaries will not be so crowded, and the asylums will have a great vacancy. Do not think this evil can be entirely eradicated; but see to it that you do your part to cast out this dreadful foe. I have followed a plan for some time which I am confident the Lord is author of; that is, to call an assembly for the purpose of teaching on this line; and those who are seemingly too delicate to listen may remain at home. Brothers and sisters everywhere, increase your teaching in regard to social and sexual purity, until this dreadful timidity is forever gone; and then reason and sound judgment may reign supreme in our purified souls. God bless you all in Jesus name. Amen.

ONE MIND.

_____

BECAUSE the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Rom. 8:7. It says again in Rom. 12:16, “Be of the same mind one toward another; mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceit. Does not this tell plainly that God’s children must be of the same mind one toward another? How many you see that profess to be God’s true children sometimes have their minds drawn away to the foolish things of this world! And again you will see some that are at variance with one another, and will not speak. Now just stop and think, Is that the right way to do? that is not loving one another as you should. Dear brothers and sisters, let us do what is right in the sight of God, with fear and trembling. We will read again in 2 Cor. 13:11, “Finally, brethren, farewell; be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace: and the God of love and peace shall be with you.” You see it tells plainly we must live in peace, and if we do that there will be no disagreeing; that must not be among God’s true children. Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory: but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than themselves. And the second verse of the same chapter says we must have the same love. Chap. 4:7, “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Jesus Christ.” Praise God! that is a great comfort to know that God has promised to keep his children if they will only trust in him. “Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feeble minded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.” 1 Thess. 5:14. We must comfort the feeble minded, those that are weak in the faith, and warn them that are unruly. We must remember to always warn them with love in our hearts for them.

Dear brothers and sisters, let us be true to God in every respect, and that we may always ask God for knowledge and wisdom, so that we may understand what God would have us do at all times, and that our hearts are entirely given up to God, willing to do always what God requires of us. I write this in love; so wherein we are making mistakes, pray God to lead us aright, and that we may always live in peace, and have perfect love for one another in our hearts. I do thank God that he has really forgiven my sins, and that he has placed me on that sure foundation that never fails. Oh what a merciful Father we havel and how much he has suffered for us, to save our souls from hell; and he knows the very inmost thoughts of our hearts, whether it be evil or good. Let us remember the judgment day, how God shall judge us according to the deeds done in the body. Oh I am afraid there will be a great many that will have a very sorrowful reckoning at that last great day. I truly ask all of God’s true children’s prayers, that I may be faithful until the end. All of my hope is built up in Christ. Your sister,

Lizzie Smith.

Dear Saints of God: I am saved from all sin, walking in all the light God gives me. I praise God for salvation that keeps me in this sinful world every day, justified freely and sanctified wholly. Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel led this morning to write my testimony. I can say I am sweetly saved in Jesus. Praise his holy name! I was a member of a sect for about eighteen yean, yet I was a sinner professor, until a year ago I left the sect and became a professional sinner. But praise His holy name! about two months ago I found Jesus. I found the way into the true church, where there are no sinners, where there is not a spot or wrinkle. I am standing on that solid Rock, Christ Jesus. Pray for me that I may sink deeper in his love. Your brother, saved in the one body,

Gospel Trumpet: There are a few of the saints in this town, and we are glad for the privileges that God gives us. We stand clear from all sects and sin, following the divine leading of God’s Holy Spirit, taking him for our only guide, trusting both body and soul into his divine healing and saving power. I thank God for that healing power. I will tell just one instance. About a year ago I drank at a spring that was full of arsenic. It was strong enough to kill a horse. It made me a little sick at first, but as soon as I found what was the matter, I took it to the Lord and he healed me. Glory to his name! We are praying that there will be a break here shortly, and already we see encouraging signs.

Yours truly in Jesus,

Dear Saints of God: I feel led to write my testimony for the first time. I am saved, sanctified and kept by power divine, and all on the altar to do God’s will as he makes it known unto me For the past twenty years my eyes have been afflicted and failing me; so during the camp meeting at West Liberty, I was anointed for the restoration of my eyes. At first they seemed quite well, but the devil has been trying me wonderfully to day; so I felt led to write and ask you all to pray for the entire healing of my eyes, as I cannot do the necessary reading that I should to the glory of God. I am standing on his promises, knowing that God is able to do all things. I firmly believe my eyes will be restored to perfect health again. I am praising God for his goodness to me in sparing my life to enjoy this blessed evening light that shines upon us in this day. Your sister, washed in the precious blood of Jesus,

Rachel G. Moon.
