My Experience.

My soul in darkness wandered
From him, my God and king;
When on my state I pondered,
I felt sin’s awful sling.

In vain I sought for pleasure
In all the ways of sin;
I found the only treasure
Was Christ enthroned within.

I came to him, he washed me
In Calvary’s flowing stream;
Yes, washed my sins all from me,
And now my soul is clean.

He justified, then purged me,
Now I am fully whole;
And daily he doth keep me
With gladness in my soul.

I seek no more for pleasure,
For Jesus reigns within;
I’ve found the precious treasure;
My joy is all in him.

ALL CAM BE SAVED.

_____

WE often hear people ask, if it was in the great plan of salvation that Christ was to be crucified for the redemption of mankind, somebody had to do the work in order that the plan should be completed; then why should those that did it be lost? God says the wrath of man shall praise him. They need not have been lost. Christ prayed, Father, forgive them, they know not what they do. The blood they were instrumental in shedding was sufficient even for his murderers. O wondrous plan! Christ says in Matt., “All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost,” and by turning to Hebrews 6:4, 5, 6, and 10:26, you can find out what that is, which does away forever with the old Calvinistic doctrine, “once in grace always in grace.”

Paul was a zealous member of the Jewish church, who made great havoc among the Christians, even delivering some up to be murdered, thinking as he said, he was doing God’s service. He was honest and sincere, serving God as he thought in the right way; and as soon as he saw his mistake he said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? How ready he was to do Christ’s will! We all know how wonderfully he was saved. What he did against the church was just the same as if he had done it to Christ, for when Paul asked, Who art thou, Lord? the Lord answered, saying, “I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.” Christ tells us plainly in his word, what is done to one of his little ones is just the same as if it were done unto him.

Now if St. Paul could be forgiven and saved for crucifying his Master, all the other Jews could have been too, by meeting the requirements, for God is no respecter of persons. That precious blood has not lost its efficacy in all these eighteen hundred years, and it is just as able to day to save those that are crucifying Christ and putting him to open shame as it was in saving Paul hundreds of years ago, those too who have a great deal more light than those poor Jews had. And if all are not saved it will be because “ye would not.” These seem to me as I write them the saddest words that I ever heard. I see Jesus stretching out his hands toward the earthly city of his people, saying, “I would have gathered your children as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and YE WOULD NOT.” And he is saying to all to day, “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come; and let him that heareth say, Come; and let him that is athirst come; and whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely.” Whosoever — murderers ( the Word says that he that hateth his brother is a murderer), robbers, idolaters, adulterers — all can plunge beneath that crimson flood and be clean. God’s mercies are more than we can possibly think. May he give us understanding hearts, seeing eyes and hearing ears.

__________

THE INHERITED SIN.

_____

BEHOLD I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Psa. 51:5. Our Adamic father gave us inherited sin, so you can see we were shapen in iniquity, not out. Conceived in sin by our mother. For this sin we are not responsible; no more to blame for inherited sin than we are for inherited color. God created no guilt or punishment, therefore, here is the ground for infant salvation. The blood of Jesus covers all irresponsible sin in irresponsible persons, without a definite act of faith. And every adult sustains an irresponsible relation to its existence in them until they hear of a remedy for its removal, when, if they then resist and refuse to be cleansed, they become guilty. Please let me illustrate. Suppose you were imprisoned in a foreign land upon suspicion or otherwise; a ransom is demanded for your release; you have not the adequate sum to procure it. A friend hears of your case and hastens to the authority and presents the satisfactory sum. He comes to your cell door, turns the key, opens the door, stands before you and says, “The price is paid, you are free, come out.” But you reply, “I will not.” Why? “Because I am not responsible for being here. I was placed here against my will; I did not consent to it. I am not to blame and I will not stir.” Now would he not be as responsible for his confinement from that moment as though he had placed himself there in the first place? Notice the difference: not responsible for being there, but wholly responsible for staying there.

A man says, I am not responsible for being what I am morally. That is babyish, because babies are not responsible; but you great big fellows cannot crawl out of that small place. You did not put that inbred sin in your hearts in the first place. In that you say truly, it was there, but Jesus the mighty to save to the uttermost comes and says, I have paid the price, come and be free; now wash away your birth sin in my blood. But if we walk (not only up to that light but) in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 1 Jno. 1:7. Not a part, but all sin. And when you are told this and you say. No I will not have it so, are you not as responsible for retaining it from that moment as though you did by your own free will and choice place that sin in your hearts originally? Jesus says, If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin, but now they have no cloak for their sin. Jno. 15:22. Be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him [Christ] to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. 2 Cor. 5:21.

Every vestige of this sin can be cleansed from the soul in Jesus’ blood. When? Ans. Now. By an instantaneous divine act. The article of literal death has no power over it. There is no proof in the Bible that any sin can. be removed after death. The Bible declares, Purifying their hearts by faith. As it is by faith, it must be now. The Holy Ghost by its presence in the heart as a distinct active moving prompter, will guide you into all truth. Brethren, go on unto perfection, accept the price that Jesus paid and be free. May the blood of the everlasting covenant make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight through Christ Jesus, to whom be glory for ever and ever Amen.

__________

FINAL PERSEVERANCE.

_____

I have before me a tract bearing the above title, and the author who signs his name C. H. M. tries to establish the false theory of once in the grace or favor of God, always there. There are several sects that adhere to the same corrupt doctrine; and as God’s true children are continually coming in contact with such spirits, I feel led to compare this with the word of God so every honest soul can see the great contrast between the two. First he says, “As to the doctrine of final perseverance, it seems exceedingly clear and simple, if only we look at it in immediate connection with Christ himself: he is the soul, center and life of all doctrine; we must make him our point of view. It then becomes a question of Christ’s final perseverance, not ours.” True, Christ is all in all, and if he be lost from the heart, all is gone. Jesus the wisdom and power of God dwells in the hearts of the saved by faith and obedience. Eph. 3:17. And his perseverance or steadfastness is ours as long as he remains in our hearts; but he dwelling there through faith, disobedience and unbelief will cause him to move out of that temple. We read in Matt. 10:22, But he that endureth to the end shall be saved. The Emphatic Diaglott renders it, persevering to end the same shall be saved. As we are steadfast in keeping God’s commandments, and walking in the light, just so is he steadfast or unchangeable toward us in keeping us from falling.

He says, ‘‘Jesus is able to save to the uttermost; surely this is final perseverance.” Indeed Jesus is able and does save to the uttermost. Some translations render it completely, which is correct; being saved completely we are saved both soul and body, and that from all sin if we walk in the light as he is in the light. Again he says, “If aught could touch the feeblest lamb of Christ’s flock, He could not be said to have all power. Jesus Christ says, My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me; and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish; neither shall any (man, devil, or any one else) pluck them out of my hand. My Father which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of his hand. This most assuredly is final perseverance.” This same passage overthrows the very theory it is taken to establish, for all are reckoned as God’s sheep who follow him, for Jesus says, “they follow me.” We get into the sheep fold (church) through Christ the door, and that by forsaking sin. We get out of the same by committing sin. Every sin a man doeth is without [outside] the body [church or fold]. 1 Cor. 6:18. No one can be in the fold of Jesus and commit sin, for his sheep follow him. Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth. 1 Pet. 2:22. Just as long as a man follows Jesus, he is in the fold and belongs to his flock: but the moment be rebels, he is not a sheep of the flock of Jesus, for they “follow him.” Then where is he? he is separate from the body and cast out of the fold; not by man, for no man is able to pluck them out; not by the devil, for God has all power; so let the word answer. I am the true vine and my Father is the husbandman; every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away. Jno. 15:1, 2. The vine and the branch in this passage are identical with the sheep and fold in the other. A man cannot be in the fold without being grafted into the vine (Christ); and if grafted into the vine he is in the fold. Jesus says, Every branch “in me.” No man can be in Christ and not be saved. If any man be in Christ Jesus he is a new creature. 2 Cor. 6:17. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not. 1 Jno. 3:6. And to say that once in the fold or vine, always there, without continuing to bear fruit, is making Christ a liar. And to say, once in grace always in grace, is the same; for the word says, looking diligently lest any man fail of [fall from] the grace of God. Heb. 12:15. But says the instigator of this fallacious tenet, “it is impossible for one who forms a part of Christ’ sbody, to perish.” “They too are written in the book of the slain Lamb, and nothingcan obliterate that writing.” Let us notice. The body of Christ is the church. Eph. 1:22, 23. And the church is the house of God. 1 Tim. 3:15. And the people of God are the house. Heb. 3:6. How long are we the body of Christ, or house of God? Just as long as we hold fast the confidence and rejoicing. Just as long as we bear fruit to the glory of God. All who are of this body have their names in the book of life; and true, nothing can obliterate the writing against God’s will, but the great Omnipotent possesses the same power he did when he said to Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me. him will I blot out of my book. Ex. 32:33. The same hand that writes the name in the book of life can and does erase it as soon as we transgress his law by committing sin, either omission or commission.

Page 4 he says, “Salvation is of the Lord; it is free, unconditional everlasting salvation. “Salvation is free, if we meet the demands that are requisite for the same. But there are conditions to meet in obtaining it, and requirements to comply with to retain it. First, conditions are to confess and forsake our sins, Prov. 28:13; 1 Jno. 1:9, that we may obtain mercy. Then he is the author of eternal salvation to all who obey him. Heb. 5:9. If this is not conditional, what is there that can be? If we obey, it is ours, but if not, we lose it. If we persevere to the end it is final perseverance, but by committing sin, failing to bear fruit we are taken away and our name blotted out because we did not meet the conditions, hence no final perseverance. Page 6 again we read, “I give unto my sheep eternal (not temporary) life, and they shall never perish.” We maintain all who belong to the sheep of Jno. 10. the “us” of Rom. 8, and the church of Matt. 16 are safe as Christ can make them; and this is the sum and substance of final perseverance. He argues that if a man has eternal life once he always has it, as any thing eternal has no end; and if he loses this life it is because it is not eternal life. The word says, And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son; he that hath the Son hath life, and he that hath not the Son hath not life. 1 Jno. 5:11, 12. Here the Lord tells us that eternal life is in the Son. Jesus is our eternal life, our all in all; and when he is gone all is gone. While we are obedient Jesus dwells in our heart. He being the eternal life while we have him, we also have eternal life. But by disobedience we are severed from the vine and Jesus forced to move out of the habitation that has become poluted; we are then left desolate. Jesus the eternal life still continues to exist, but we do not possess it.

“Once a child always a child,” is another part of this scheme, propagated by the devil to appease the concience of those who are trying to facilitate the gospel plan of salvation. From a literal view it is correct to say that a son born of his father is always a son; he has been born and nothing can undo the act; but to resort to such sophism and apply it to God’s spiritual kingdom, is perverting the truth, and is intended to deceive the credulous mind. In God’s word we are called sons of God, by the act of adoption. Gal. 3:5. Rom. 8:15. The Romans had a custom of adoption, by which a person might adopt as his son one born of other parents. The effect was that the son received his new father’s name and enjoyed all the privileges that his own son would; in fact he ranked as his heir at law, while the father on his part was entitled to the property of the son. We are by nature strangers to God, but through forgiveness of sins we are adopted into his family, become heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. Rom. 8:17. Jesus then becomes our elder brother. He tell us in Matt. 12:59 who are of this family; it is all who obey or do the will of his Father. The Father must have free access to all our property, our life, time, yea all we have, and be allowed to use it to his glory. If we fail in this we are disowned, for that is one of the conditions in God’s law. We are then no longer heirs; we have failed to bear the fruit pleasing to the Father; the branch is taken away; the name is blotted out of God’s book; Jesus the eternal life is gone; and we are desolate without God and without hope of future happiness.

God bless all his elect, and may we watch and pray to the God of Israel who is able to preserve us from all fiendish spirits, if willing to be led by him. He will keep his saints joyful in glory, preserved blameless unto the coming of Jesus Christ. When the trumpet shall sound, and we have triumphed over the grave, wrapped in immortality, we shall ascend to our happy home, through the merits of Jesus. Amen.

When the final blast of the trumpet is blown,
Jesus descends in glory to receive his own;
To those who have presevered, shall he say,
Well done,
The fight of faith is fought, the crown of  victory won.

W. A. Haynes.

Grand Island, Neb.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: It is to the honor and glory of our God that I let you know how the dear Lord is still blessing me and keeping me by his mighty power. Bless his holy name forever! My tongue cannot express the sweet joy and peace there is in the Holy Ghost. I knew I had indeed passed from death unto life Jno. 3:14, because truly I do love the brothers and sisters. Bless the Lord O my soul, and all that is within me bless his holy name! I am ready once more to go forth in the name of our blessed Jesus to scatter the good seed by the wav, hoping, trusting, believing alone in Jesus who is the author and finisher of our faith, that some may fall upon good ground. O praise the Lord for deliverance from the yoke and bondage of sin!

IT IS BETTER TO TRUST IN GOD,

than to put confidence in man. This Bible statement always proves out true. Here is another demonstration of the fact.

Oh how many deceptive ways there are in this world to ensnare souls! Though I feel unworthy I would like to ask the privilege to confess my waywardness through the Trumpet. I had been drifting downward spiritually ever since I had my life insured, although I tried to justify myself on these grounds, that “he that provideth not for his own house is worse than an infidel.” But my mind from that time became blurred, and I also lost financially from that time. I ask the saints to pray for me that I might sell out and get outof debt. The Lord heard my prayer in this matter, but I confess with shame, that instead of going to work for God as I agreed to do, I went and bought again. I soon became troubled in my soul, and saw that I moved wrong. Now I write to ask the saints everywhere to forgive me for disobeying the call of God. I am thankful to God I can report to you that the Lord has forgiven and freely justified me and wholey sanctified my soul. And I can truly say his blessings upon my soul, and his great love toward me, are beyond all human conception. Your unworthy brother,

Philip Spacky

Dear Trumpet Readers: We believe it will be to the glory of God to give you a brief account of a series of meetings recently held in Berlin, Ont. We remained in that town five weeks holding up the truth to the people, which met with much opposition from the sectarian world. But in spite of all their efforts to crush the truth, a few souls made their escape from sect confusion and received full salvation in their souls. At the close of the series of meetings the ordinances of feet washing and the Lord’s supper were observed. Eighteen holy ones participated. God bless the little church at Berlin, and add unto it daily such as are being saved. Your sanctified brother,

Tiller’s Ferry, S. C., July 1, 1894.

Beloved in the Lord: We are still under the blood, sanctified and kept by the power of God. Praise the Lord! We have been holding a meeting here ten days, preaching every day twice. The power of the Holy Spirit was with us in preaching the word. Congregations good. People came for miles to the meeting. One sanctified and another one converted. Three followed the Savior down into the water yesterday and were baptized by Bro. Campbell, who is now with us and did most of the preaching. Bro. Campbell will go to Darlington, S. C. to morrow, the Lord willing, and we will join him the last of the week. The Lord is opening up the way, but there are many adversaries. Pray for us, dear brethren.

The Lord wonderfully healed our sister during the meeting here. She was much afflicted and had been for several days. The morning she sent for the elders in accordance with James 5:14, she was not able to stand up but a few moments at a time. We prayed over her and anointed her in the name of the Lord, and she was immediately healed. Praise the Lord! We would like to have more tracts than we have been able to get. We believe that we could use them to glory of God and the salvation of the people. That has been a work that we have always delighted in — distributing tracts. If any one feels led by the Spirit to have some sent to us, we will make a careful and prayerful use of them where we go preaching the word. Yours in Jesus,

J. E. Shaw and Wife.

To all of God’s dear Children, Greeting: Our souls are joyful in glory. Truly we are feasting upon the fat pastures of Israel. We have been a little negligent about sending in reports for some time, not because God was not dealing graciously with us and blessing our labors, but other duties and responsibilities occupied our time. I believe our last word was from Cornell, Neb. The Lord gave us a precious meeting there and a few dear souls were saved, and God’s children strengthened and edified. A few that never had discerned the body of Christ acknowledged the truth, and promised perfect obedience to God’s will. We observed the ordinances of washing the saints’ feet, and breaking bread and drinking of the cup, and were blessed in so doing. From there we started on our march eastward; came by the way of Robinson, Kan. and stayed two or three days. Had five services while there, and a few of God’s little ones got a real benefit. We next held forth at Kingston, Mo. The Lord gave us a precious meeting there. Three or four consecrated for sanctification, and they all seemed to get what they came for; and the church was strengthened and much encouraged. But sectarians mostly held themselves aloof. But prejudice gave way a little; and we trust good seed was sown. We also had a precious ordinance meeting there. From there we went to camp meeting at Grand Junction, and truly that was a precious feast to our souls. We will not try to describe it here. We came to this place June 28, and commenced meeting next eve in the Christian meeting house and continued until last night, as our tabernacle had not yet come, but it is here now and is being put up. We will have

services in it from now on, the Lord willing. Good attendance thus far. Now dear saints, please unite your prayers with ours for real victory on the Lord’s side and the deliverance of many precious souls. Amen.

Dear Saints of God, Greeting:

May the Lord abundantly bless you all. Amen. It has been some time since we reported through the Trumpet, but God has been with us in power, both in the salvation of souls, and in healing the afflicted. The meeting at Freedom, Pa. was one of seed sowing. We believe the seed fell on some good ground, and will in the future bring forth a harvest. After holding a short meeting there we moved on to Rochester. Here the people seemed hungering after more light and truth, The congregations were large, and good order prevailed generally. Babylon made a general rally among her shattered forces to crush the truth. But God’s word prevailed, and the work of the Lord moved on. There were several consecrations. The convicting Spirit of God was so manifest in this meeting that poor souls would tremble in their seats and cry out for mercy. Yet when we would invite them to the altar to be saved they would cry out: “Oh I belong to the church. What would our preacher say? Our parents won’t let us.” My God, awaken this world! Here we were made to realize more than ever before the awful sin of heresy. These poor souls with whom God’s Spirit was so pleading would work off their convictions, and go rushing down to eternal hell, just because of their idolized preacher, damnable sect, and ungodly parents. Truly these are perilous times, and darkness is settling down on the Gentile world. But the Lord raised up a few souls at that place, who were willing to pay the whole price, and who we believe will stand firm on the word of God. During this meeting Sister Clayton was miraculously healed and raised up as it were faom deaths door. Also during this meeting Bro. Clayton went and opened up the work in Uniontown, Pa. The boat arrived at this place July 3. The prospects here are good. The congregations are large, and we trust a good work will be done. Bro. Henry, myself and company will begin a tabernacle meeting at Pittsburg, July 18. Bro. Clayton & Co. will continue the work on the boat at this place as long as the Lord leads. Pray for us that God may keep us humble and in his order at all times.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus: May the God of all grace, continue to bless you all and keep you in all His ways. We can truly thank God to day for victory over all the power of the enemy. Praise God in the highest! Since our last report the good Lord blessed us with the privilege of meeting with the saints near Hiawatha, Kan. Sorry to say we found them about all crushed down by the power of the devil, and some we fear will never be able to rise again unless they get to see themselves. We did all that we could while we were there to show them the way out, and some were willing to take the whole truth and live by it, and others were so discouraged that they said that it was no use for them to try any more. But we trust that God in his goodness will lead them out into the narrow way. There were also two sinners consecrated for pardon and we believe that they got the desire of their hearts. Oh may God bless all the dear ones at the above named place. Amen. We also met with the saints near Nishnabotna, Mo. on June 3, and the good Lord met with us and gave us a feast of fat things. On the fourth of July there were six consecrations, and three of the party were for the first time made to taste that the Lord was good, and after the afternoon service on the fourth day of July our dear Bro. Backus from Mound City, Mo. followed the Master in the ordinance of baptism. We pray the Lord to bless and keep him in all His ways. Lord willing our next meeting will be at Rulo, Neb. to begin on the night of July 10, to continue as long as the Lord directs. The meeting named above will be a tent meeting. Dear ones pray for us. We remain your humble brother and sister all on the gospel altar,

I can say this day that I am saved and do believe the truth, and it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. I have been thinking for sometime past to write my testimony, and while reading sister Cole’s article on parents’ duty to children, my very soul was stirred within me to write and tell the dear ones professing holiness to profit by it or it will surely stand against you in the great day of judgment. I well remember some ten or twelve years ago, I got light on those things and I do praise the dear Lord that I was willing to walk in the light. We are living in the days of wonderful deception, the devil is deceiving may souls. O dear ones, harken to the voice of Cod when he speaks through his people, oh do not be deceived, for God will not be mocked, for whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap, and the reaping time is so near. Many perhaps will read those lines whom I will never see on earth, but dear ones, take warning from one who loves your souls. My heart is full of the love of God this day. Pray for your aged mother and sister, that I may always be a true follower of the lowly Son of God.

Dear Saints: I feel it would be to the glory of God to write my testimony. I can say of a truth that I feel a sweet peace in my soul. Oh I am so glad that I accepted the truth. I have been converted, and lived in the M. E. church about fifteen years; and thought that I had realized all there was in a Christian experience until about six months ago when the evening light was preached in this neighborhood by Bro’s Keeling and Cole. I went to hear them preach and I found that I fell short of the Bible truth. I immediately went to seeking sanctification for about five months, but could not receive the blessing. I had been sprinkled and was a great persecutor of immersion. Every time that I was about to receive the blessing this would rise up before me, until I received baptism at South Boston about two weeks ago. When I came out of the water I received the glorious blessing, the fullness of God’s love, and praise the Lord, I am still rejoicing and praising God for his great blessings. I ask an interest in all your prayers that I may live faithful and meet you all in heaven.

Dear Saints: I feel led of the Lord this morning to write my first testimony. I know this morning I am saved. I am so glad I heard the evening light preached; it has brought me out of all Babylon confusion. I was in the Methodist sect for over twenty years, but when the Lord called me out I opeyed the call, and I just praise the Lord I am free; and whom the Son maketh free is free indeed. I can praise the Lord for his healing power; he has so wonderfully healed me. I was afflicted with neuralgia in my back. I would be for weeks at a time so I could not walk across the house, and a part of the time I was confined to my bed, and I spent a great deal of money in doctering. But I just praise God I have found a Physician that has healed me; and I am able to ride eight and ten miles to meeting, and go night and day, too, and I give God all the glory. I do praise God for his goodness to me! He has saved me out of every thing that is not of God. And I can praise God for persecutions; I have had to endure a great deal of late, but I have victory over all. Pray for me, that I may always stand on God’s promises and obey him at all times. Your sister saved and sanctified,

To all the Saints of the Living God: I write my testimony. I was a professer and a member of the Southern Methodists for several years, but had scarcely any light on God’s word or of a real Christian life, until a little over five years ago, the Lord sent Bro. J. and Sister Mary Cole to our house. I was willing to receive light on every thing but baptism. But the Lord told me to pray over this, and while praying he showed me to read his word, and whatever he revealed to roe while searching his word would be right. I did so and to my surprise, immersion was all I could see taught in the Bible as baptism, and I said amen to it. So as soon as I was wholly given up to God he sanctified me and showed me I had a duty to do to improve my talents. He showed I must hold family worship in the evening as well as morning; and I did so for a while until I gave way to persecutions and other things and failed to do my duty. A few months ago I began to see my condition and I told the Lord in spite of the devil and his wicked works I would do my duty and work for Him if my nearest ones would turn against me. There are a few honest souls in this place. I wish it might be the Lord’s will to send some of his holy ministers this way. Pray for me that I may be settled down on the solid rock as never before. Your sister in Jesus,

Dear Saints: I am all alone in my room this evening, and no one to speak to, but I have sweet communion with Jesus, for he keeps me saved. I am settling down deeper and deeper on the everlasting rock, which to day is the occasion of as much stumbling with unlightened sect members, as it was with the Jews when Christ was on the earth. We had a precious little meeting at the house of Bro. McCreary at Wilkinsburg. Bro. Pennywell the colored evengelist of Pittsburg was with us, and told some of his experience and of the wonderful dealings of God with him. The smallpox got into his family of eleven, and the doctors told them they would have to stay in all summer. But they fasted and prayed; and God stopped the plague so that no more of the family took it after that, and they were all able to go out by May. Praise God! He can and does do such things. The saints here are very much scattered all over the city, and I would like so much to hear from them all. We are looking forward to the 19th of July when we expect to have a tabernacle meeting here, or in the suburbs of the city, likely at Wilkinsburg. May God keep the saints from all the snares and delusions of the city and its sects. To be out of Christ, destitute of the real indwelling of the Holy Ghost, dead in trespasses and sin, and yet at ease, contended and unconcerned, soothed by a mere sect membership, which like an opiate, deadens conscience till they sleep the sleep that knows no waking, the sleep of death and the death that never dies, is a most appalling deplorable state. Dear saints beware ofthe “charnal house.” Your brother in Christ,

A. B. Gildersleeve.

She had been saved over ten years, had been true to God as far as she understood God’s will. She died happy, was calm and peaceful until the last. Sister Rhoda Ervin fell asleep in Jesus, Wednesday morning at half past three o’clock, June 7, 1894. She was born in the year 1793. She lived to the good old age of over a hundred years. She could neither read nor write, but God in his infinite wisdom imparted knowledge to her soul, and some of the precious words which she uttered, we write from memory, word for word, as spoken on her death bed. “He will not put more upon me than I am able to bear, for his grace is sufficient.” From time to time after spells of very great suffering she would quote the scriptures: “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil.” “No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.” “Love one another as I have loved you.” One of the first scriptures which she uttered on the Tuesday before her death, was, “When the great day of his wrath shall come, who shall be able to stand?” Many other things which she said during her illness were convincing of her steadfast faith in her Savior. She was thoroughly convinced that sectism was not right, and came out from the Methodist sect, which was a great trial to her at first, but she was an overcomer through grace divine. Praise God! She was a slave in her early days, which was doubtless the cause of her ignorance, and what knowledge she gathered was from those who read and talked with her about Jesus. She departed this life in perfect peace, to meet her God.

SANCTIFICATION.

_____

  1. Sanctification, is the act of God’s grace by which the affections of men are purified or alienated from sin and the world, and exalted to a supreme love of God: also the state of being thus purified or sanctified.
  2. The act of consecrating or setting apart for a sacred purpose.

Sanctifier. One who sanctifies or makes holy, specifically the Holy Ghost.

Sanctify, 1. To set apart to a holy or religious use. 2. To make holy or free from sin; to cleanse from moral corruption or pollution; to make holy by detaching the affections from the world and its defilements and exalting them to a supreme love of God. — Webster. To distinguish sanctification from justification let us now compare the definitions of the two terms.

Justification. The treating of sinful man as though he were just. Justify. To pronounce free from guilt or blame; to absolve; to clear; to pardon. — Webster.

By these definitions we can plainly comprehend that these experiences are both received by divine favor, and are distinctly separated from each other. The first — justification — is offered to sinful man upon the conditions of repentance and faith. God bestows the abundant pardon, and removes every guilt from the sinner’s heart, who feels the sweet consciousness of peace and heavenly approval; where before there was guilt and remorse. The second — sanctification — is offered to justified believers upon the conditions of consecration and faith. The Sanctifier purifies the heart from the moral depravity of Adam’s race, which brings his entire being into the glorious harmony and liberty of the sons of God. Scripturally considered, the terms sanctification, holiness, purity, and perfection are synonymous.

Holiness, separation, setting apart, sacredness.

Purity, cleanness, chastity.

Perfection, completeness, wholeness. This is all comprehended in the one word sanctification.

GOOD’S WILL TO HIS PEOPLE.

Every provision on his part has been made for the sanctification of his people. Wherefore Jesus also that he might sanctify the people with his own blood suffered without the gate. — Heb. 13:12. His part is complete, and for us to receive the full benefit of what he has done is but to fully meet the conditions. No one can remain willfully ignorant in this respect. Some may think they can remain in a justified experience and refuse to walk in the light when they obtain knowledge of God’s will for their sanctification, but this is a sad mistake. Every truly justified soul delights to know and do the will of God. What he knows already of this blessed will is so precious and brings such holy joy to the heart that he is anxiously seeking to know more and more of it, and to do this will constantly, is the supreme object of his life. This will must be done, therefore, in order to maintain the experience of justification.

How long a person may hesitate in this matter, and keep his justified experience God only knows, but a willful refusal certainly becomes a sin. Therefore to him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin. — Jas. 4:17. Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. — Mat. 7:21. For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. — Mat. 12:50.

RESULT OF OBEDIENCE.

If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. — Jno. 7:17. Cast not away therefore your confidence which hath great recompence of reward. For ye have need of patience, that after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. — Heb. 10:35, 36. He that doeth the will of God abideth forever. — 1 Jno. 2:17.

Sanctification is his will. For this is the will God, even your sanctification. — 1 Thes. 4:3. But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation, through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth. — 2 Thes. 2:13. Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth. — Jno. 17:17. That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that it should be holy and without blemish. — Eph. 5:26, 27. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. — 1 Thes. 5:23.

WE ARE CALLED UNTO HOLINESS.

For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. — 1 Thes. 4:7. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. Heb. 12:14. But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, Be ye holy for I am holy. — 1 Pet. 1:15, 16. Who hath saved us and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace which was given us in Christ Jesus, before the world began. — 2 Tim. 1:9. That he would grant unto us that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. — Luke 1:74, 75. To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints. — 1 Thes. 3:13.

Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to inquity unto inquity, even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. — Rom. 6:18-22.

WE ARE COMMANDED TO BE PERFECT.

Be ye therefore perfect even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. — Mat. 5:48. For we are glad when we are weak and ye are strong, and this also we wish, even your perfection. Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace, and the God of love and peace shall be with you. — 2 Cor. 13:9, 11. Therefore, leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection, etc. — Heb. 6:1.

WHAT IS CHRISTIAN PERFECTION?

Ans. Perfect love. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind, and thy neighbor as thyself. — Luke 10:27. And above all these things put on charity which is the bond of perfectness. — Col. 3:14. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected, hereby know we that we are in him. — 1 Jno. 2:5. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another God dwelleth in us and his love is perfected in us. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is so are we in this world. — 1 Jno. 4:12, 17.

Perfect in Unity. For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one, for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren. — Heb. 2:11. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. — Jno. 17:19-23.

Perfect in Christ. Whom we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power. Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always laboring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. — Col. 1:28; 2:10 and 4:12.

Perfect in Purity. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him, purifieth himself, even as he is pure. — 1 Jno. 3:2, 3. Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. — 2 Cor. 7:1.

A perfect Heart. For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. — 2 Chron. 16:9.

THIS IS ATTAINABLE.

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ. — Eph. 4:13. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you. — Phil. 3:15. For by one offering he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified. — Heb. 10:14. For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which will we draw nigh unto God. — Heb. 7:19. Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices that could not make him that did the service perfect as pertaining to the conscience. — Heb. 9:9. For the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. — Heb. 10:1. God having provided some better thing for us that they without us should not be made perfect. — Heb. 11:40.

A PERFECTION NOT ATTAINABLE IN THIS LIFE.

Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. — Phil. 3:12. The apostle here speaks of the resurrection of the body which is plainly mentioned in verses 10 and 11. This cannot be attained until God’s appointed time, when this mortal shall put on immortality. Then we shall attain to resurrected or absolute perfection, which the apostle declares he has not yet attained, but in verse 15 he speaks of this perfection which is here and now attainable, and of which he and those to whom he was writing, were already in possession.

On this side of the resurrection we are not perfect in knowledge, wisdom, judgment, nor understanding, for in these things we are to increase and grow more and more. Sanctification does not imply a state of maturity beyond growth; but in this blessed grace we are simply inducted into our normal condition for growth. While the carnal mind was within us our growth was constantly hindered by that which is enmity against God, but now since this inward enemy is destroyed, our entire being responds to God and his holy laws. Our growth is now perfectly natural, whereas before it was not. Like an insect in the heart of a plant which constantly subsists upon its life, the growth in such a condition is not perfect, and if permitted to remain in this state the plant could not mature, and even if it had sufficient vitality to reach the state of maturity, its fruit would be very imperfect, and in many cases worthless. So in our Christain growth, the enemy must be purged out before the perfect fruits of the Spirit can be realized, as well as a perfect growth.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel led of God to write my testimony. I am saved by the power of God, and sanctified wholly. I was saved last August, and on the night of the 19th, I was sanctified wholly. He cleansed me from the use of tobacco and coffee, and I have no desire for the filthy habits. The Word says, Cleanse yourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Your brother in Christ,

Dear Saints of God: I feel it my duty to confess my wrongs and make everything right as far as lieth in my power, regardless of what may be thought of me hereafter. Now I have said things in the past about things published in the Trumpet which I had no room to say whatever, and about the workers and against true saints, which I ask forgiveness for. I mean to keep a deaf ear to everything that is not right, and to hold my tongue after this and not speak only to the glory of God; and I ask you all to pray for me that I may keep humble, low down at Jesus’ feet, and that I may always have a teachable spirit. Oh! I have learned a good lesson out of it and a dear one too. May God help us to bridle our tongues and be found doing God’s will in all things. Would like to have some one to work with me. Lord send whom he will. Amen. Address me here.

Yours in Christ,

Chas. Bowers.

Dear Saints, Greeting: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony, and also my request to the Trumpet. I was converted twenty-five years ago last January; united with the Baptist sect, as there was no such thing as unsectarian holiness taught at that time, and only once in a while one who professed holiness in any form. I was in that sect a part of the time, and a part of the time out, as my family was moving about. I lived in this state, a sort of an up and down life, until about six years ago the early part of last fall, I came out free. Praire the Lord! Not quite eleven years ago, I heard holiness defined in its true light. I at once began seeking. I knew no person who had experienced holiness, or that could enlighten me on the subject; and for nearly three years I groped in darkness, sometimes almost in dispair, still clinging to the promise, that they that seek shall find. Then a dear brother and his wife started a prayer meeting near me. I attended, then I got on the right line, and came out on the Lord’s side. Praise his name! I enjoyed the experience for three years, then I lost it. I began seeking at once, but have not regained the experience as yet, although I know the Lord has not forsaken me, for 1 feel his presence at all times. I was called to preach the gospel a short time after I experienced holiness; and did preach for several months, until the door was closed against me. My greatest desire was to be ordained, I felt it was of God, and still believe it was. Shortly after this, I spoke to a holiness evangelist, who was preaching in this vicinity on the subject; as he had no power to ordain, he referred me to the fifth chapter of Tim. also first chapter of Titus. I considered the matter, and gave up the idea, my husband was and is still unconverted, and I could not rear my children as I would, on account of his influence. I did not realize then as I have since that it was a temptation of Satan. I believe that then and there I began to lose my experience. The Lord has healed me, and also my children several times of different diseases. My oldest daughter was very sick with grippe. To please my husband I gave her an herb drink. The Holy Spirit kept saying, “the Lord is able to heal.” I began praying for healing, at the same time I desired to have a dear brother, who lived five miles away, come join in prayer with me. In about an hour, the Lord sent him and his sister, to lay hands on her with prayer, and she was healed. All glory be to God, who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. I have been afflicted with catarrh, in different parts of my body for twenty-four years. I have prayed much to be healed of this, but feel that I must be anointed, with the laying on of hands by the elders, and prayer to accomplish this. Pray that I may be healed. For several years I have been asking God to send a true genuine unsectarian person into this neighborhood to preach the pure holiness doctrine. At length he said, Ask and ye shall receive; so now I ask that some one whom the Lord shall direct, come here with a tent. Come soon and stay until all about here are aroused and saved, or as many as well receive a full salvation. I wish them them to bring a tent so as to hold meetings near me, that if possible my husband will attend and get saved, if he will. When it is stormy I consecrate three of my best rooms to the service of the blessed Lord. Thoere is also a school house four and one-half miles from here which will be at your service. There are five dear ones living near there who have professed holiness; four are in the M. E. sect, and they can’t see that they must come out. Three are in one family; they don’t enjoy themselves as they would were they free. Now whoever the Lord sees fit to send, write me soon. Address

My right arm is numb and partially useless; but the Lord told me to write, so I do the best I can.

To all the Dear Afflicted Ones who may chance to read these few lines: I feel it would be to the glory of God for me to write my testimony. It was ten years the ninth of June since God for Christ’s sake first healed my poor afflicted body. I had been troubled with bronchitis in my throat and it has gone to my lungs, and I did not dare to sit in the least draft of wind but what my throat would be sore that I could hardly move my tongue in my mouth. I had been very poorly for about twelve years, and all that spring before the Lord healed me I had to cough so hard that I got the pleurisy in my side, so that I could hardly straighten myself up or down or take a long breath. I had been doctoring and taking of all most every kind of patent medicine, but none of it did me any good, and kept getting worse all the time. I told my family that if the Lord did not heal me, I would not be with them very long. I never had any teaching on faith healing, only what God showed me by his Spirit, and what I could read in the word of God. But God and his word is the best teacher that we can get, so I began to call on God instead of doctors and medicine, and praise God, I found him the best physician that I ever had. The day that I was healed I was in the bed room lying on my bed, and the girls got dinner and they came in the room and wanted me to come out and eat something. I told them I did not feel like eating anything; but they insisted so hard that I finally got up and started for the kitchen, and the smell of victuals was enough for me, and I went back to my room to try to sleep a while and see if I wouldn’t feel better. But I could not sleep, and something said. “Pray for the Lord to heal you; and I said, “Lord, I have often prayed and I am not healed.” It seemed I had not come to the point where I could believe it would be done right now. So I began to pray to God to heal me if it was his will, but it seemed that I could not get the faith to be healed right then. And I began to call on God if it was his will to heal me, that he would give me faith to believe it was done then, and not some other time; and while I was praying, praise God. I felt the mighty waves of his healing power begin to go all through my body, and I said to myself. This is God’s healing power. I thought that I would get up and see how I would feel; and as I moved out by faith the power of God came stronger and stronger. I started for the kitchen, and when I got to the door I said “Side (for that was my oldest girl at home), the Lord is healing me.” And she began to cry, and laugh, and said. “Ma I hope it is so;” and when I said. “The Lord is healing me,” the mighty healing power came so strong that I had to sit down on the first chair I came to, and the wonderful waves went over and through my body for about five minutes, and then there was a great calm, and oh I was so happy I could have praised the Lord loud enough for my neighbors to hear me. Praise the Lord I am wonderfully healed! Yet the devil tried to tempt me two or three times on my healing right away after I was healed. He would never bother me at home, but when I would go to meeting, while on the way the devil would make my throat appear so sore that I could hardly move my tongue, but I soon knew where that came from; for the devil knew that I would testify to my healing, and he thought he would make me doubt my healing so that I would not testify to it. I told the devil to get behind me, for I knew I was healed, and if the Lord God let me get to meeting and gave me the use of my tongue, I was going to tell what the Lord had done for me; and immediately the devil would take his flight, and in one minute’s time my throat would not be sore in the least. The word of God says, Resist the devil and he will flee from you. But after being healed so long the devil tried to tempt me on my lungs and throat this winter. But praise God, I know it wasn’t any thing but a temptation, and I am still healed and I know that the one that is able to heal is able to keep us healed, if we only trust God and resist the devil as we should. I have never taken one drop of medicine, or teas, or used poultices or liniments since I was healed the first time, and we have never had a doctor in our house since that time. We have a family of six children, and two of them are married, and we all take the Lord for our physician. I have been healed a great many times; so have all of my family often been healed of things that no earthly doctor could ever have reached. Praise the name of Jesus! Some people seem to think that a person ought to never get sick again if they are healed once; but the word of God says, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous but the Lord delivereth them out of them all.” And now dear ones, I am still saved with an everlasting salvation that saves from all sin. I write this only to glorify God for the many wonderful things he has done for me and my family. From your saved sister in the one body of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,

Mary and Wm. Shaw.
