Tell It To Jesus.

_____

Oh, tell it all to Jesus, when trouble doth appear,
‘Twill change your gloom to joy, your sadness into cheer.
O just confide to Jesus, whate’er thy grief may be!
A perfect friend you’ll find in him, a friend indeed is he.

If friends prove false, as many do,
Heedless of trust and honor too,
And you feel in need of friends’ advice,
Go to him the Lord and Christ.

No earthly friend is half so true,
And none can do so much for you;
He will relieve your sore distress,
His work will be a sure success.

If you are sad and in despair,
And feel your lot is hard to hear,
Just come to him with all your grief,
And you will find a sure relief.

When you are sick and racked with pain,
With burning fever and aching brain,
O then with faith make thine appeal,
And trust in him, and he will heal.

False Prophets.

_____

“BEWARE of false prophets which come to you in sheeps’ clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” — Matt. 7:15. Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves; be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. — Matt. 10:16. God’s children are represented as sheep; wolves, false teachers and wicked men. Christ, the good shepherd. I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. — John 10:11. When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory and before him shall be gathered all nations; and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats. And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. — Matt. 25:31-33. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. — Matt. 25:34. Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels. — Matt. 25:41. And these [the wicked] shall go away into everlasting punishment; but the righteous into life eternal. — Matt. 25:46.

So we see here Christ is the shepherd; his children, the sheep, and the wicked people, goats. Now 2 Peter 2:1 says, But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you. So we see that there has always been false teachers, and are at the present time. May God help his people to be wise, for the word says, Let no man deceive you by any means. This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. When many will have a form of godliness, but deny the power thereof; lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God. 2 Tim. 3:1-5.

Now we see the last clause of the 5th verse says, “from such turn away.” 2 Tim. 4:3 and 4 says, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers having itching ears. And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned into fables.” Now a fable is a falsehood; a falsehood is a lie. But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. Now he tells us who they are. These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. — Jude 17 to 20. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. — Rom. 8:9.

May God help his people to search the word for the devil has many false prophets sent out to deceive the people. Jer. 5:13 says, And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them. 1 John 2:4. — He that saith I know him, and keepeth not his commandments is a liar and the truth is not in him. Jer. 23:16 says, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you; they make you vain, they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord. They make the people vain, proud. Now the Bible forbids the wearing of gold and costly adornment. 1 Peter 3:3; 1 Tim. 2:9. But these prophets instead of being examples to the flock, even wear those things forbidden in the word, and by so doing the members think they can wear them also; which makes them vain. May God help them to see the evil of their way, and forsake it and repent or they will all likewise perish. Luke 13:5. Micah 3:11. — The heads [preachers] judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money; and they say, Is not the Lord among us?

God says in his word that Babylon is fallen, and calls his people to come out of her. Rev. 18:2 to 7. When they hear the call and do not obey, they become transgressors. Sin is the transgression of the law. — 1 John 3:4. So they become sinners if they do not obey. Now God says to those who will not obey the truth, For this cause God shall send them strong delusions, that they should believe a lie; that they all might be damned who believe not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. — 2 Thes. 2:11, 12. All unrighteousness is sin. — 1 John 5:17. Jesus says, Matt. 24:11, And many false prophets shall rise and shall deceive many. Well they are here, those who do not teach all the word, and shall deceive many. 2 Peter 2:2. — And many shall follow their pernicious ways [false prophets’ ways], by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. Will forsake the right way, and have gone astray, following the way of Balaam, who loved the wages of unrighteousness. 2 Peter 2:14. — Having eyes full of adultery [idolatry, false worship], and that cannot cease from sin. They claim we cannot be saved from committing sins in this life. Now we will see what John says, 1 John 3:8 — He that committeth sin is of the devil. May God help his watchmen to blow the Trumpet and warn the people for Christ’s sake before too late, and lay judgment to the line and righteousness to the plummet, and preach the word. Is not my word like a fire, saith the Lord, and like a hammer that breaketh the lock in pieces? — Jer. 23:29. For the word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart, — Heb. 4:2, when preached with the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Robbing God.

HOW can a man rob God? He cannot rob him of his power, his honor, or his glory; for God is perfectly independent of man. But there is a way in which we can rob him. We read in Malachi 3:8. — “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.” O that the brethren could understand this! We that pretend to be consecrated to God and his service, and that we are not our own, but are bought with a price, even the precious blood of Jesus, and testify that all we have and are belongs to God, and then withhold their means for the support of the gospel work, what are we to think? “Ye shall know them by their fruits.” A man’s works must correspond with his testimony, or what is his testimony worth? If a man is truly converted and has a portion of this world’s goods and withholds his hands from giving to uphold the hands of God’s servants, he will become a leaky vessel and his salvation will all leak out; and he is led to wonder what is the matter. The Lord loveth a cheerful giver. If we give grudgingly and not deny ourselves, so we can give the more, it will not benefit us spiritually. O my brethren, look into this matter and see to it that you do not lack in this respect.

“But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly; for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work. (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth forever. Now he that ministereth seed to the sower, both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;) being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness which causeth through us, thanksgiving to God. For the administration of this sendee not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God.” — 2 Cor. 9:6-12.

We see that if every one is doing his duty, we rejoice in one another and that causes a general rejoicing in the Lord. “While by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them and unto all men; and by their prayer for you, which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you.” — Verses 13, 14. Praise the Lord! If we have the grace of God in our hearts our brethren that have the same will discern it in us.

Then in the 8th chapter of 2 Cor. Paul speaking of the same thing, or grace to the Corinthian brethren brings the liberality of the- Macedonia brethren to stir up this grace in them, he says, “Therefore as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that you abound in THIS GRACE also.” — Verse 7.

Again in Phil. 4th chapter the apostle speaks of this again. He says, “Now, ye Philippians, know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity.” — Verses 15, 16. Now he says, “Not because I desire a gift; but I desire fruit that may abound to your account. — Ver. 17.

The Lord help us to see this in its true light. There are other scriptures that bear upon this point. I will give some of them: 1 Cor. 9:12-15. Please read the chapter. Titus 3:13, 14 and many other scriptures might be brought in. I know that there are brethren that are wholly consecrated to God (and their means go to the work of the gospel) who are doing all they can: and some have gone beyond their means in this respect; have let their zeal carry them beyond reason. God bless their dear souls and reward them accordingly. But there are others who make a loud profession, who lack on this point and therefore lack in other points on account of this lack. I pray God to bless them with such blessings as they need; and if I were to designate the blessing I should say repentance. I know of a man that has been in the work more or less for the last three or four years. He has spent hundreds of dollars of his money for the cause, and much time, and the people among whom he has labored are rejoicing in his labors. I have heard them repeatedly tell how they did rejoice that God sent him among them; but they have never offered him a cent for all his labor. Now I know that that man does not desire these people to give to him, but understanding this matter, he desires that they should give in some direction for the support of the gospel for their own account. As Paul says, not that he desires a gift, but he desires fruit that may abound to their account. The Lord bless all the dear saints and help us to see our duty clear in all things.

I am still saved, sanctified, and kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation, ready for His appearing. Amen.

Yours for the truth,

C. B. Butler.

Mark Your Example.

_____

“WE are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.” — Matt. 5:14.

We are either for God or against him. And if we are for him we are walking in his light: for God is light and in him is no darkness at all. — 1 Jno. 1:5.

“Do all things without murmurings and disputings; that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst, of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world.” — Phil. 2:14-15.

Dear readers, it is needless to refer to other scriptures to show that your example and walk is either leading dear souls to the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world, or else by your worldly and sinful example you are causing them to disbelieve the power of Jesus’ blood to cleanse and keep from all sin. Dear parents, let me entreat you in the name of Jesus to look well to the interest of the precious souls that God has entrusted to your care. Let it not be said of a lost soul that your example caused their destruction.

I have heard men and those that profess to be saints testify that God had cleansed them from the use of tobacco, and in a short time they would begin chewing it again, and say it was for the toothache or some other ailment. But it is because they have given place to the devil. “Thou that abhorest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?” — Rom. 2:22. Again the Bible says, “Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold or of putting on of apparel; but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.” — 1 Pet. 3:3, 4. Some may seem to be living up to this scripture, and yet be violating it by spending what ought to be used to the glory of God to adorn their children; and by so doing cause their children to become victims of pride, for which God will hold the parents responsible. Many prepare their children for the ball and allow them to attend places of revelry. This is contrary to the word of God; and in so doing your light will become darkness, and you can have but little, if any, Christain influence over your children. “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” — Prov. 22:6. “Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness. But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen.” — 2 Pet. 3:17, 18.

TESTIMONIES.

Floyds Knobs, Ind.

Dear Saints of God: This is the first testimony I have written for the Trumpet. I am young in years, but the Lord has saved me from all sin. I was saved over a month ago, and still remain saved. Pray for me.

Your brother, saved and sanctified,

Dear Saints: I do feel led to write my testimony for the first time. About eight months ago I heard this true light. I had been in the M. E. sect about two years, and was living up to all the light I had. But when I heard this true light, I saw I was nothing but a sinner. Praise the Lord for having mercy on me! He forgave my sins and healed my body. I had a broken arm. I doctored with different doctors and none seemed to help it. It pained me so bad I could hardly sleep at night. So the Lord took all pain away. It is stiff yet, and I do ask all the saints to pray for me that my arm will yet get all right.

Your saved sister,

Dear Brethren: As I love to hear from all Christian workers who are doing what they can in these last days in gathering in the sheaves into the garner of the Lord of the harvest, I concluded that a few words from myself might be acceptable to the readers of the Trumpet. I am a man over seventy years of age, laid aside from active service, except with my pen; yet as I look back over the past, I have the consolation of having done what I could. The Holy Spirit has delivered me from all selfish bonds many years since, and I have perfect peace, and joy in my heart; just as every one can have who dies out to self, and no one can have who does not. Exert yourselves, dear brethren and sisters everywhere, for great is the responsibility resting upon the holiness people in these last days. God is giving his saints the evening light, not to put under a bushel, but to bear testimony to the power of love to save from all sin and sinning; also from all isms, and schisms. Perfect love wipes out all party lines forever. It did this for me many years since; and the light shines brighter in my soul every day. Hallelujah! I believe in shouting, when I feel like it. God’s saints have a perfect right to say, Glory, when glory fills the soul.

DIVINE HEALING
—OF—
SOUL AND BODY.

A New Book,
—by—
E. E. BYRUM.

_____

This book is just fresh from the author’s pen, and a glance at the contents is enough to convince any one of its interest and value to those seeking a more thorough khowledge of the Divine Being, and his dealings with people at the present time, as well as in days past.

The first part of the book very plainly marks out the way from sin unto full salvation, according to the teaching of the sacred word.

It presents the gospel truth in such a way as to throw a gleam of light into the pathway of the sinner, and enable him to see that there is hope beyond, through the mercies of a blessed Redeemer.

The BELIEVER is led to see the beauties of full salvation, and the joys in a life of Christian perfection.

THE HEALING OF THE BODY

constitutes the second part of the book. This consists of twenty-six chapters on doctrinal subjects, exposing and overthrowing false ideas and theories concerning the healing power in these last days, showing when, how, and under what circumstances and conditions God heals the sick and afflicted at the present time.

It gives a history and testimonies of healing from the time of Abraham, through the different ages, up to the present time.

The third part of the book consists of the

WITNESSES OF TO DAY.

These are wonderful testimonies of persons who have been healed within the last few years by divine power; such as being instantly restored to sight after having been blind for years; the lame throw away their crutches; broken bones are instantly healed; invalids who have suffered for years immediately arise and walk, after the prayer of faith is offered, etc. The author is personally acquainted, with nearly all the parties who have herein given their testimonies, and gives their names and addresses in the book, so that persons doubting the truthfulness of the same can write to the parties themselves.

It will be a precious volume to those who are afflicted in either soul or body. The chapters on faith, and also other subjects, will strengthen the faith of the reader, and aid in a closer walk with Him who is the “giver of every good and perfect gift.”

It cotaines 248 good-sized pages; good, plain print, on heavy paper. Neatly bound in cloth, $ .75. Library (half morocco), marble edge, $1.10. Send two cent stamp for special terms to agents. Address,

__________

Bro C. L. Kaumeyer writes us for last issue, which having been sent us was necessarily delayed, stating that he was about to begin the publication of the MESSENGER announced in the Trumpet recently. The perfect unity of the body of Christ necessarily precludes all publishing enterprises that would appear to conflict in interest; but this brother having a printing office which he wishes to devote to the work of God, and being over in Canada, where there are it appears very favorable laws for the circulation of such literature, we see no reason why he should not put his type and presses to work preaching the glorious gospel of Christ. And we hope our readers will all send for the paper, and send means to help the brother in his earnest labors. He writes:

We trust that God will move on the hearts of his servants to send suitable articles for the paper; clear and to the point.

We would like to publish at least 10,000 copies. For the present we are not settled about putting any price on the paper. Trust the Lord will make our duty clear by the time we issue. In the meantime if any of our brethren in Canada feel like helping us push the battle, God will reward you. Pray for us much that we may have wisdom from on high, that God’s will may be done here as in heaven.

Yours in Christ, and in the whole war,

C. L. Kaumeyer.

Chippawa, Ont.

I would suggest to the brother, that if there be a law there requiring a price to be set on the paper in order to come in the regulations for cheap mail, as is the case here in the U. S., conform to the law, and fix the price. That will not prevent you giving away all the Lord wills. But should the laws of Canada require nothing of the kind it will, in our judgment be just as well free, and let all give freely as the Lord prospers them. However there is nothing wrong in fixing a price for that for which you have to pay the required price; i. e., paper, etc. The Lord bless the MESSENGER. Amen.

GRAND JUNCTION CAMP MEETING.

The time of this glorious convocation of the saints of the Most High, unless hereafter changed, will be June 14th to the 22d. 1892. The dear Lord is sending more workers on the ground, and we trust by his blessing, nothing shall be wanting to thoroughly set the ground in order, and furnish all necessary buildings. A good pavilion 40×70 will be erected, filled with comfortable seats. Also boarding and sleeping buildings.

Any one wishing a board tent put up on the ground will please notify Bro. A. B. Palmer at Bangor, Mich. and it will be built as cheap as possible. If any wish to rent tents also let him know. A very large attendance is expected, and it seems to us that the fire of the living God in our soul assures us that it will be the most glorious place, and season of divine power, grace and glory ever witnessed in these last days. Come in the name of Jesus, in the love of God, and in the Spirit of earnest prayer, and so come expecting glorious things from the press nee of the Lord. Amen.

A HOME AND SCHOOL.

St. James, Mo. April. 6, 1892.

Dear Brother Warner and Trumpet Readers: May the clear Lord bless you with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ Jesus, and give you health and strength to do his will. Amen. To day finds us all the Lords and rejoicing in God the rock of our salvation and with an eye single to his glory.

We feel led to write to you on a matter that has for a long time been burdening our souls, and especially so for the last few months. It is concerning the establishment of a home and school for the children. We feel the need of such an istitution, and we believe the Lord demands it. We have but little means outside of the farm, but have been trying to sell that for sometime; thinking that we would use the means, or at least a part of it that way, but have not yet succeeded in selling. So we thought of making an offer of $50.00, if you think that would begin the work with what others might do by making it known through the Trumpet. If the Lord permits us to sell we can give more, perhaps $1000. or all that the place brings, if the Lord leads; for we don’t call any thing that we possess our own. Praise God! If Bro. C. B. Butler’s farm of Hamilton, Mich, is still consecrated to the Lord for this purpose and that is the place for it we say, Amen. We think that the work can be done. May the Lord lead many dear souls to help in this work. We feel assured that if all would do what they can that God would be glorified in the speedy establishment of this much needed institution. And a heavy burden lifted from many dear souls that are out in the work, and many more that would be out if they only had a place for their children. Oh, dearly beloved, for the sake of the children, and the good of souls let us keep this subject before the Lord until he brings it to pass! Amen. Pray that the Lord may send us a buyer for our place if it be his will for us to sell. We are all the Lords, willing to spend and be spent for the Master. Pray for us and the work here.

Yours in holy love,

M. M. & L. E. Copeland.

NOTE.

It has been some two years since this project found expression through the Trumpet. Though little has been said since, the matter has never been dropped. Prayers have been continually sent up to God to speed on the matter. And since the new camp ground has been purchased the matter has been almost daily on our mind. We are willing to do what we

Page 3

can for this blessed consumation whenever God sees fit to locate it. But if no place more suitable opens we have intended to offer place on this new camp ground near Grand Junction. The ground may be leased to, and the buildings put into the hands of trustees in connection with the camp ground. If this offer is not accepted, and the Lord does not otherwise move, by the grace of God we expect to move as soon as possible. And have faith in God the home will be provided in the name of Jesus. Thank the Lord for the $50 pledged. The $50 laying ready for Bro. Achor’s family a home, if all parties so will, might be put into this general effort. And now the way is open for others to ask God what he will have you do. Our idea is, that unless mothers are called to be in the field with their husbands part of the time, they should be right with their children in this home. And rooms can be arranged for each family to be by themselves, and all take meals at a general table. Arrangements can be made for all to labor some with their hands, as the Lord has given each the gift. Let all pray much for this home, and each do as God directs, and he will bring it to pass.

QUESTION.

Dear Saints: In the Trumpet of April 7, I noticed an illustrated article by H. C. Wickersham, in which he takes 1260 days to mean 1260 years, and again he takes 3 1/2 days to mean 350 years. I would like to know from a Bible standpoint why Bro. W. makes days mean in one sense years, and in another centuries? Why should we not say that one day means a thousand years ,and then say 1260,000 years, and 3,500 years. For a day is as a thousand years, etc.

Yours, sincere for the truth,

J. P. McMullan.

ANSWER.

We do not adopt the latter interpretation of prophetic time, because the Holy Spirit enables us to “rightly divide the word of truth.” Peter says, it is true, that a day with the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. This has its proper sphere and applications. The early church fathers understood it in this way. That as there are six work days and then follows the rest day, so there will be six thousand years of probation, toil and warfare, in this world, and then comes the everlasting lest in heaven. But to apply the thousand year theory to the 42 months — 1260 — of Daniel and Rev. does not prove out true, and is contrary to all facts in the case. But we have in Eze. 4:4-6 and Numbers 14:34 the use of one day to represent a year in prophetic calculations, and this scriptual rule applied to the 1260 days corresponds with historic facts in a very striking manner, and therefore proves to be the correct application of the word of God. And the same is revealed to God’s holy people by the Spirit as the correct exposition of prophecy. For said the Lord, “when be the comforter is come, he will guide us into all truth.” And it was by his clear and positive illumination and voice, that several of God’s teachers were shown that the 3 1/2 days in Rev. 11 represents three and a half centuries. And this was shown us by the Spirit, according to the promise of Christ, before we knew anything about how the annals of history would agree with it, or disagree. But investigating over twenty volumes of history since, we were filled with admiration and wonder at the perfect harmony of the voice of God by his Spirit, and facts as recorded in history. All history shows us that the apostasy arose ..n the latter part of the third century, and some show us the causes which developed the same about A. D. 270. Of course it was fully developed into the papacy at a later period; but the false man-organized and man-ruled church, distinct from the God-founded, and spiritual body of Christ, actually came into existence about that time, as the uniform testimony of history proves. And 1260 years added to A. D. 270 bring us to A. D. 1530, just when the first body of Protestantism came into organic existence in the adoption of the Augsbury confession of faith by the Lutherans. In Rev. 13:5, we see the time of the first beast, first form of the apostasy, Romanism, covered 42 months — 1260 days; i. e., years. Then follows the second beast, with no time given of his duration. But in Rev. 11:2, 3 we have the same 42 months “one thousand two hundred and three score days,” — 1260 days — years, as the time the holy city — God’s church — was to be trodden under foot, which Daniel says was to be done by the little horn, power, — the apostasy. Also the same 42 months cover the time of the testimony of the two witnesses in sackcloth, which was immediately followed by 3 1/2 days that these two witnesses, the word and the Spirit, lay dead in the streets of the great city, spiritually called Sodom and Egypt, the city of false religion. Now observe that in Rev. 13 the second beast, Protestantism, came immediately after the 42 months of the first beast, and in Rev. 11 the 3 1/2 days came immediatly after the same 42 months; therefore the second beast — Protestantism — and the 3 1/2 days both following immediately after the 42 months, must cover the same time, and denote the same thing. The two horned beast denotes the institution of Protestantism, the second form of false churchism; the 3 1/2 days measure the time from his rise until the pure church again appears in the evening light in 1880. Now this was not three and a half literal years, nor three and a half thousand years, but exactly three and a half centuries as you see by adding 350 years to 1530 brings us to A. D. 1880. Thus the facts of history perfectly coincide with, and confirm the communication of God to his people by the Spirit. If you wish proofs of this calculation in the Bible, we cite you to the promises of God through Jesus Christ, that the Holy Spirit would guide us into all truth. If you ask why the Bible does not mention a day for a hundred years as it does one day for a year, and one day a thousand years, we simply answer that the 1260 years gives us a basis so clear for the calculation of the 3 1/2 days that follow that it was wholly unnecessary for the word to give us any direct example of a day for a century, and the Lord never gives what is not needed. Only his Spirit to exclude all doubt has witnessed to the hearts of God’s children that which is true in fact, and in history is true in God. Since a day is used to a year, and again a thousand years, how reasonable to believe that it would also be used to represent a hundred years, an intermediate period. But these deep things of prophecy is only known by the light of God’s Spirit. Amen.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

Grand Junction, May 9, 1892.

Dear Readers: After meeting with the church at Denver, while the brethren continued the meeting I went on to Colorado Springs, Colo., where the Lord opened the way for gospel work; one soul was saved just before my departure. At Canon City about one hundred miles further on, it was our privilege to meet a number of precious souls who were hungry for the pure word. There is a glorious opening for the gospel. After meeting with the church at Denver, where Bro’s Warner and Willis are still holding meeting, I returned home, and found the Trumpet family rejoicing in the love of God. The work in Denver is still moving on in the name of Jesus and souls are being saved. Bro. Warner reports that he is being blessed with strength to preach the word.

Yours in Him,

Dear Brethren: We report sweeping victory all along the line for King Jesus and his glorious kingdom. The gospel of God is taking great effect in this country, and the salvation of Jesus is making a wonderful inroad into the ranks of the enemy. Souls are coming to God out of sin and sectism unto Mount Zion. Thank God for the mighty workings of the Holy Spirit and the truth. The Lord is giving us pentecostal times in the meetings. Saturday we met at the water’s edge and eight dear saints were buried with Christ in baptism by Bro. S. Gilger, and the dear ones came up out of the water shouting and praising God. Others were healed of their infirmities and afflictions. We expect to baptize again next Saturday and Sabbath eve. The 8th hold an ordinance meeting the Lord willing. Yesterday was truly a glorious day in Zion, showers of blessings with glory and power fell and rested upon the assembly. One M. E. lady was gloriously saved and set free in Jesus by the Spirit while sitting in the congregation, and she was made to praise God and shout aloud for joy. Also the wife of a Dunkard preacher was gloriously sanctified and set free in Jesus. We are trusting God to save the preacher also. A dear brother who had been to religious meeting only twice in seven years was gloriously saved and blessed of God in his boiler house. He was also saved from tobacco which he had used for about thirty- three years. One sister who had been poorly and sickly all her life has been gloriously healed and made well. Hallelujah! The Fertigs meeting will be postponed from the 5th to the 11th inst., which will last one week, the Lord willing, and the 20th begin meeting in St. Petersburg, Pa. Our love to all the holy family and friends, and pray much for us and our success in the gospel of God. Address us at St. Petersburg, Pa., in care of Bro. Jno. Morgan.

Dearly Beloved Saints: May the God of love and peace abide with you forever. Amen. Having been laboring for the salvation of souls not far from this vicinity, we are happy to report some of the glorious workings of the Spirit of the Lord in our meetings. On the 17th of April in company with Sister Fry we drove across the country to attend the meetings which were in progress at a school-house in Bro. Michels’ neighborhood, where he and Bro. Daugherty were laboring, about six miles distant from South Haven. We sang the songs of Zion on our way, and on reaching our destination, rejoiced to meet the dear ones, with whom we spent a profitable time in labors of love for the salvation of precious souls. Sister Fry returned home on Monday, the 18th, while by the help of the Lord we continued to assist in the meetings. We do praise God for the glorious manifestations of his power among us. With few exceptions there were some at the altar at every service. Six or seven consecrated their lives to the dear Redeemer. The meetings were reasonably well attended. There was an excellent interest, and the people were wonderfully convicted. Bro’s Haley and Dewey, and other dear saints from a distance were present on Sunday. On Saturday morning following, we went with Brother and Sister Michels a distance of about thirty-four miles to a school-house near Benton Harbor, where according to previous appointment, we held one meeting, which was well attended. On Sabbath morning our services were held in the Winebrennarian sect house. This meeting was especially glorious and blessed of God. One soul was saved, whom God immediately used to openly expose and rebuke the crookedness of the teaching he had received from sectarian preaching. He had been saved in former days, but testified in the presence of a large congregation of sectarians, that it was “their ungodly preaching” that caused him to turn away from God. In the evening we had an opportunity of giving in our testimonies at a sect meeting, God was with us in power. Praise his dear name! A man called “Achan” (Aiken) preached; and his sermon manifested the fact that his “Babylonish garments” were not hidden, but nakedly exposed to the public. We returned on Monday morning, and held two meetings in Bro. Michels’ house, where we closed Tuesday evening, April 26. We are now here with the dear ones of the Trumpet family, awaiting the sweet bidding of our Master to gather precious sheaves for him wherever he leads.

Dear Saints: My early teaching was that of a universal salvation to all men; and that we received our punishment in this life and then passed into glory. I tried to believe it because my father did, but the Holy Spirit came to me in such convicting power that I realized that I had been falsely taught, and I fell upon the Rock and was broken, and was made whole through the blood of the Lamb.

I was then induced to join the M. E. sect and after six months probation was taken in full membership. Not feeling satisfied I joined the Free Methodists, but soon found that they were drifting away from God and were not living up to the Bible standard. Some of God’s true children came to this place and taught the word of God in its purity; and as I saw the plain teaching of the word of God I made my escape out of sectism and am now free in Christ, and have complete victory in my soul.

Your brother in Christ,

Dear Readers: I realize that I am a child of God, I am walking in the light as I receive it. Jesus says in his blessed word, But if we walk in the light as he is in the light we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. — 2 John 1:7. I have been walking in this blessed evening light for about eighteen months, and I am not tired of the way yet; the way grows brighter and brighter every day, although I have a great many severe temptations and persecutions in this life; but I have grace to overcome evil with good, for the Lord says in his blessed word, Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you and persecute you and say all manner of evil against you falsely for my sake. Rejoice and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven; for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. — Matt. 5:11, 12. Pray for me and family that they all may be saved and at last obtain a crown in heaven.

Dear Saints: I love to read the testimonies of the saved ones. I lave been converted about six years, but in that time have not joined any sect. Not long ago there was handed to me a GOSPEL TRUMPET, which after perusal, I found had the ring of the true metal; and I bless the day I ever found a people who loved to do the will of God better than the will of men. Sectism is Babylon confusion, and it is high time for God’s saints to come out from her, lest they be partakers of her sins, and receive of her plagues. There are a few saints in this place, who have manifested a determination to follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. Oh, that we could have a company of saints come here and wake up the people to the realization of the impending crisis and its nearness. Surely the “falling away” spoken of by St. Paul has come; and men, even church members and professing Christians, are lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God.

To all the Saints, Greeting: I do praise God this morning for a free salvation. I have been a reader of this valuable paper for some time. It has been handed me by a brother, and I have been profited by this glorious evening light. O praise God for this marvelous light! This light was given unto me about six years ago, and I was born into the kingdom of God, and he added me to the church, and my name is in the Lamb’s look of life. Praise the Lord! for he has set me free. I have often been ed out to pray for different ones that have requested prayers through the Trumpet. I do not see any account of those brothers and sisters whether they were healed or not. I should like to hear through the Trumpet of that brother that had the broken leg, and the two doctors had given up not to get well. I feel that God is able to make him every whit whole. I do believe in the word of God. He has promised to heal all our diseases. Praise his name! he is true. The promises are to them that believe and do the things that are pleasing in his sight. I am free in Christ. I have seen standing in this liberty ever since accepted him. I do feel called of God to help spread this everlasting gospel. May God bless all the dear ones.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT.

Health.

HEALTH, or a state of being healed is natural; diseases, unnatural, accidental, so far as we retain our original condition, as we were created. While disease and physical suffering result only from violations of God’s laws — which he established to promote the happiness and welfare of his creatures, — obedience to all of these laws, the physical, mental and spiritual, will insure the highest state of manhood and womanhood. To the extent that these laws are observed, we are perfect, true to the design of our creation. It is fair to infer that the true Christian, while endeavoring to observe the laws of the Creator, if not the healthiest, wisest and happiest of mortals, will make progress in these particulars, to the extent that he is controled by the principles of the Christian religion. Indeed, these principles are admirably calculated to enlarge the scope of mental and spiritual vision, and favorably develop all of the powers of our being. If our physical condition depends on our regard for the laws of our whole being, it follows that we can have the same control over our health that we have over any branch of our business, or over our mental and spiritual conditions, since it is the necessary product of obedience to organic laws. We are, then, as responsible for our condition of health as we are for our spiritual state. I am well aware that there are those who look upon disease as an accidental affair, perhaps mysteriously sent upon us, regardless of our customs, our manner of living, our daily conduct; perhaps believing that a fever, for example, is the result of a “mysterious dispensation of divine providence,” for the removal of which we should pray, doing nothing for the removal of the causes which have produced it, — having “faith without works,” which “is dead.” While I would not undervalue the importance and the legitimate effects of true prayer, I would combine the influences of both “faith and works.” I would as soon encourage the confirmed drunkard to pray for a relief from his servile and degrading habit while still continuing his daily drinks, as to continue outraging the physical system by constant violations of the organic laws, the health conditions, in the attempt to remove physical ailments. If we would have our prayers answered, it is safe to do all in our power to answer them ourselves, co-operating with our heavenly Father, thus indicating our harmony with him. We have no more right to expect an exemption from disease and physical sufferings while we continue a course well calculated to produce and perpetuate them, than we have to be free from the degredation and sufferings of intemperance, or those produced by the tobacco habit, while we persist in the use of these virulent poisons.

I insist, therefore, that, as free moral agents, we determine and control our physical conditions by our conduct, in accordance with our constitution and the laws which our kind heavenly Father has constituted; health being secured, and that only to the extent that we observe its conditions, live in accordance with the natural order of things. Perfect health, then is the natural fruitage of conformity to natural laws. To promote our physical welfare to the greatest extent, securing the highest state of health, we have simply to observe the due relations between labor, rest and sleep in abundance; select an appropriate diet, which should be very plain and simple, taken under proper circumstances; purify the system by the free use of air and sunlight, avoiding intemperance in all of its forms, so preserving the harmony of our whole natures that the mind and soul may aid in sustaining the highest condition of the body, keeping it in a condition as best to secure divine aid.

Dr. J. H. Hanford.

NOTE.

For fear some one may from reading the foregoing article, get the wrong idea regarding the use of means, or “faith and works,” we wish to add that in case of sickness, if we are aware of the cause, and if caused by disobeying some of the laws of nature, then we are to stop breaking the laws of nature at once, and then use the means set forth in his word. But what are the means which God desires us to use? Drugs and medicines? No; James says, “Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him anointing him “With oil in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. — Jas. 5:13- 16. Read Jno. 15:7; 1 Jno. 5:14, 15.

And I am trusting in his grace each day and hour of my life. I have been in this evening light about one year, and I am not tired of the way yet. It only grows brighter each day. I would not give the peace that I now enjoy for all the pleasures of this world. The yoke is easy and the burden is light. Pray for me, dear ones.

Yours in the bonds of Christian love,

Dear Saints: I feel that the Lord wants me to send my testimony to the Trumpet. I thank God that I am living for him. I will follow my Savior wheresoever he leadeth. Let come what will, I will follow my Savior. Although I am not sanctified, I know that the Father will sanctify me when all is on the altar. For we know that no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. Praise his name forever! I praise God that I am free from sectism. I sincerely ask the prayers of the saints that the God of peace may sanctify me wholly.

Your sister in Christ, justified and praying to be sanctified.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I was saved in a meeting held hereby Bro. Bolds. I am saved and sanctified and can say I am happy in Jesus. I do love to read the testimonies of the brothers and sisters. I had been a slave to coffee ever since I was a baby, but when I was saved it took the coffee taste away, and I crave it no more. Blessed be the holy name of Jesus! I can tell to sinners all around what a dear Savior I have found. I find that he is a shelter in the time of storm, and a rock in a weary land. I have touched the hem of his garment, and I am made perfectly whole. Pray for me.

I remain your saved and sanctified sister in the body of Christ,

Barbara E. Nichelson.

Dear Saints: I do praise God for saving and keeping me from all sin, and for healing my body. What I did suffer no tongue can tell; but the dear Lord has how said, It is enough. I had hands laid on me and the dear Lord witnessed to me, and I began to amend from that very hour. I was not healed instantly, but I told the dear Lord I just wanted his own way about it. I was willing to do anything he wanted me to do, that he might be glorified. Pray for me and my family that they may be saved; and do not forget to pray for my unsaved husband that he may yet give up all and be saved. The dear Lord bless and keep you all, is the earnest prayer of your sister in Christ.

Dear Trumpet Readers: Praise God for so great a salvation! He keeps me sweetly saved in Jesus. I lived in sect Babylon ten years, and believed that I had to sin, as they would tell me. I began to read the word of God, and praise God, I was not long in finding that I was a sinner in his sight. I began to pray to God, and asked him to show me what I must do. Praise his name! He always directs us in the right way, when we will let him. I longed to be free from sin and was willing to give up all for Christ. I fully believed that I would find the true church. The Lord showed me that to get into Christ’s church was to get salvation. Glory to Jesus! He also showed me that I was a slave to tobacco, and other intemperate habits, and that I must give up all. And by the help of God did so, and when I had done all that the Lord required me to do, I was made free by the blood of Jesus, which cleanseth us from all sin. Praise the Lord! I now live with Christ in God, and he keeps me sweetly saved each day. I am praising God for his wonderful love to me.

Dear Saints of the Living God: Grace and peace be multiplied unto you. Amen. We are saved and rejoicing in the Lord, being able by the abundant grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, to rejoice even in tribulation. Praise the Lord! We have proved indeed that the name of the Lord is a strong tower into which the righteous run and are safe. The Lord is surely a very present help in time of need, able to heal and keep both soul and body. Our little girl was very low, having a very high fever for several days, accompanied by spasms. She could not take any food and became very weak and poor in flesh. We took her case to the Lord, asking also the prayers of the saints for her healing. The Lord rebuked the fever and the spasms have disappeared at the divine touch, and she is getting quite strong again. To God be all the glory. We have left all — home included — and are out to spend our time in salvation work for Jesus. We had to sell our household goods to pay debts and are cut loose from earth and earthly things completely. But we are joyful, trusting the Lord. We would be glad to hear from the saints in the West, especially in Kan. and Neb. Any one desiring us to hold meetings can address us at Stockton. Rooks Co., Kan.

Dear Saints: May God bless you all, and keep you continually sinking down more and more, and launching out farther and farther in the sweet will of our God. I love to testify to the world that my Savior can save from all sin, and I love to mingle my voice with the saints in sweet fellowship divine, repeating o’er and o’er the sweet story of the cross, seeing new beauties each time. Bless the Lord! Since the first of the year 1891 I have been constantly engaged in the holy war, until farming time this spring. Thinking a change of work might prove beneficial to my general health, and it might be the will of God for me to work through the week and preach on Sundays, I began work. To let me see whether I valued my work more than God’s or not, I was allowed to continue work till planting time; then God gave me the following warning in a vision which I was not slow to understand and heed. I will relate it in the name of the Lord, and to the glory of God.

On last Friday morning I awoke about three o’clock feeling very uneasy, but I knew not why. I soon began to sleep lightly and dreamed that I started from the meeting-house to travel. I looked back and saw the lights in the meeting-house, but I thought there was plenty there to carry the work on and there was no use of my returning. There was a brilliant light all around me, and I traveled on with no thought on fear. As I journeyed I saw a large circus of animals of different kinds traveling two by two. All seemed to be working very hard, yet I could see no load. At first I paid no attention to them; but finally stopped to look. Presently the train passed and I thought they were all hitched to a little plow. I then began to wonder where I was. While watching the plow I seemed to lose the brightness of my light. I thought I was surrounded by all kinds of worldly amusements, and near me stood a man selling tickets to any part of the large building; a lady came up and purchased a ticket to enter one of the side rooms and turned to me and told me I had better get my ticket and go on, or get out of there. I had entered that place without inquiring but I did not know how to get out. I learned I must go down a large flight of stairs, and I made my way down, making a mighty racket, tearing part of the banisters down as I went. I made my way out and it was yet dark; and I had no light to travel in excepting an old lantern which was burning dimly. I thought it would not be muck trouble to me as I could just swing it on my arm and go on. As I went I thought I fell in company with some of the young converts of the Ripley Co. meetings; one of them ran against the old ruins of a sect meeeting-house and called for me to hold my light higher; as I went to lift it up it went out. The brother says, “Your old lantern has gone out.” I told him I could not light it again for I had no match; he says: “The old thing would not burn any way, for there is no oil in it.” Just then a man came along with a light and a large crowd followed him; as he made his way before the show they were those that had a profession but loved the world. Those that were with me began to look after and long to follow him.

Here I suddenly aroused to consciousness, and as soon as I could comprehend it was only a vision and not a reality, I was on my knees thanking God for the timely warning. Though I have no special interpretation yet, the face of it caused me to promise God (before the morning sun arose) to follow where he leads. I am back to the meeting-house I left in my dream and God is wonderfully blessing and leading. My soul is a holy flame of fire for God and immortal souls.

Yours and Christs forever,

A. B. Stanberry.
