Let not Your Heart be Troubled.

_____

Let not your heart be troubled,
Nor let it be afraid;
Lo “I am with you always,
Unto the end” He said.

Let not your heart be troubled,
Behold all things are yours;
Thy bread it shall be given,
Thy water shall be sure.

Let not your heart be troubled;
Although the waves are deep,
Lo, He that watcheth Israel,
Slumbers not nor sleeps.

Let not your heart be troubled,
Though great thy trials may be,
For in His word ’tis written;
My grace is sufficient for thee.

Let not your heart be troubled;
’Tis but a little while:
Till thou shalt see forever,
The glory of His smile.

THE EVENING LIGHT.

_____

“BUT it shall be one day which shall be known to the Lord, not day nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light.” — Zech. 14:7.

“In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and uncleanness.” — Zech. 13:1.

“Awake, awake; put on thy strength O Zion, put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city; for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean.” — Isa. 52:1.

Amid all the spiritual confusion in these last days, God has a people, a “remnant,” and the time has come when he is calling them together in unity of his love. A holy people, a pure church, whose light cannot be hid, but shineth with the brightness of the morning. It was on account of their departing from the “faith once delivered unto the saints,” that the Lord permitted his children to be taken captive in mystic Babylon; but he says, “Ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart; and I will be found of you, and will turn away your captivity, and will gather you from all the nations, etc. — Jer. 29:14.

“Therefore thus saith the Lord, If thou return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them.” Jen 15:19.

The time has now come when God’s true church — the bride of Christ — shines forth with all its splendor and beauty, fair as the noonday, bright as the morning, endued with strength and power from on high, as in the morning of the Christian era; “a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any such thing;” exercising the gifts of the Spirit as God intended from the beginning; free from the babylon confusion of sectism; clothed in the glorious robes of full salvation. The Lord is sending his messengers forth to the four winds of the earth gathering together the elect — his people — teaching them the oneness of Christ, and exposing the spiritual darkness and utter ruin of Babylon. In Rev. 18:2, we read the doom of this mystic Babylon, and in verse 4 is a positive command to the children of God, saying, “Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.”

Dear reader, this command is for you, if you are a child of God, and yoked up in some religious creed. If you are not a child of God, then rest assured that the command is not for you, and it is for you to choose, as to whether or not you will be classed with what is described in Rev. 18:2. You may consider this strong language, but the salvation of your soul depends upon the obeying of the Word of God.

“My people, go ye out of the midst of her and deliver ye every man his soul from the fierce anger of the Lord.” — Jer. 51:45.

Go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the Lord.” — Isa. 52:11.

In presenting these truths, we do not wish to be misunderstood, but desire to give light to the good people who are yet in sectism. There are many good honest souls in the different religious denominations of to day, longing for the time to come when God’s people will all be “one,” and united in the one body, as Christ prayed that they should be. Jno. 17:21. The creeds of to day are seeking some plan upon which to unite, but tail, for the walls of division are still there. This holy union is found only in Christ. Behold, the time is now here for this oneness, and his children discern the real spiritual body of Christ — his church — and are bound together with love, instead of disciplines and rules of men.

This evening light is the shining forth of the true church, and Zion puts on her strength, and is no longer in obscurity, nor her people bound down with thongs of opinions; no longer to sing the songs of Zion in a strange land, but are brought into their “own land” — perfected holiness — which is the Canaan to the soul.

Sectism will continue as before, and her inhabitants go on professing godliness, deceiving and being deceived, but a line of demarkation will be drawn by the Word of God, which plainly points out the narrow way — the only way to heaven. We dare not falter, dare not refuse to walk in the light of the gospel, for Jesus says: Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you. * * * While ye have light, believe in the light.” — Jno. 12:35, 36.

MORE ABOUT THE MILLENNIUM TRADITION.

_____

WE had expected to follow what we have written, by other lines of Bible, but time has not afforded an opportunity. We have however just read with much patience a long manuscript prepared by an old brother tor whom we cherish much love and respect, and therefore feel it our duty to make a few remarks at this time. First, we wish to refer to an apparent contradiction drawn from history. In our tract on the Millennium, etc., pages 41 and 42, we quote from Rutter’s church history, how that Cerinthus, who is recognized in all the early history as one of the worst of heretics, of the first century, taught, that “Christ would reign upon earth, with his disciples a thousand years, which would be spent in the highest sensual indulgence.” This heretic rejected much of the New Testament, and even “held the epistles of Paul in great abhorrence.” So the millennium that he taught, was a reign of lust and sensuality. But having forgotten all about this passage taken from history, and finding in other historic records were in the second century, Papius, seems to have been acknowledged as the very originator of the literal thousand years reign theory. We published the same in one of our articles last winter, using the language of history.

For some time past we have thought of the apparent contradiction, for both could not have been the originator of the same thing. But a thorough investigation, if we were at home to consult the records, would perhaps reconcile the matter. It appears that Cerinthus founded a heretical sect of his own, in which he incorporated his sensual millennium plank, and in the next century, Papins was the first to introduce a similar doctrine into the church. This was doubtless the case. However in both cases we only gave the language of history.

The writer of the article before us after citing the words in Rev. 20, where “the souls” — not “persons,” as Wilson the no soul translator renders, but the souls of them that had been put to death for Christ’s sake, lived and reigned with him a thousand years, the writer fills out the record with his own idea, that it was resurrected men reigning a thousand years on earth. And having it thus arranged, he adds, “Now it does appear to me that when the word of God can be understood in its literal plain common language it is best to understand it in that way.” We say, amen. But where will we allow the word of God its plain obvious interpretation? Shall we stand upon a meaning we get from a passage in the symbolic book of Revelation, when it contradicts the plain, open teaching of the New Testament in numerous places? Shall we conclude from Rev. 20, that men resurrected in the body shall reign with Christ in a literal kingdom on earth a thousand years. When no such a thing is taught any where in all the plain Bible teaching, and not even so taught in the passage cited, Rev. 26.

If we go in for the plain unequivocal scripture declarations, then we must believe that when Christ was here on earth he founded his everlasting kingdom, which will stand until he delivers up the same to the Father at his coming and the end of the world. See Dan. 2:4. And fulfilled Mark 1:14, 15. If we believe these texts, we cannot believe the doctrine we have just read that the real kingdom of prophecy is not set up yet.

Again if we believe what Christ charged the church in the present dispensation, to look for, we must believe that his coming is nigh, and with it will come the judgment and final separation, and doom of all men, and the end of time. Matthew, chapters 24 and 25. Again if we believe the positive revelation of the apostle Paul, then we know that when the righteous shall be resurrected, there will never be a later resurrection, because it will be at the “last trump;” besides “we” the saints, says the Apostle, will not only then arise, but the “dead,” that is, all the dead will be raised at the same time. And “then,” not a thousand years later, but when the righteous are resurrected, “then cometh the end.” See 1 Cor. 15:52, 23:24.

We have heard the Chilian teachers, say, and have read it again to day, that the judgment scene in Rev. 20:12-15, is only represented by the wicked, and the righteous will have been raised and judged a thousand years before. But the positive statement of the word is, “I saw the dead small and great stand before God,” — surely that must mean all the dead — “And the books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life, and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books.” according to their works. If no righteous men had a part in that general judgment, why have the book of life opened there? No sinners have their names and works recorded in that volume. “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” V. 15. Does not this positively prove that both classes stood, or will stand, before the throne of judgment at the same time and that the separation and destiny, will take place at that time. Just as Christ himself described that last great day in Matt. 25:31-46. And this will be “when the Son of man cometh,” and not a thousand years later. And so we might go on showing that the dark age notion attached to a few verses in Rev. 20, conflicts with the word of God in much of its plainest and repeated teaching. And any doctrine that is not in harmony with the whole tenor of God’s word is not of God. And in the name of Jesus we affirm that no man ever received such doctrines by the Spirit of God. If men would only empty out the pile of rubbish they gathered in the fogs of sectism, and receive the truth by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, they would be led into all truth, and out of all confusion.

__________

HOW THE LORD HAS LED ME.

_____

To the Gospel Trumpet Readers: I feel led to write my testimony to the glory of God and upbuilding of his church. I was converted nineteen years ago on my way to London, from Sweden, then nineteen years of age. The blessed Holy Spirit had called me many times before, especially when about eleven years of age, but none to lead my attention to the blessed word. I followed my nature and for eight years lived for pleasure and worldly enjoyment; but now en route for England, alone from all companions, the Holy Spirit’s call got hold of my heart and my cry was now, Can’st thou save a poor sinner like me.

The first thing was to find the Bible and begin to read, but how dark all was. Then to pray, how difficult. But what I had learned in school days began to come up in my mind and my cry was God save me. Upon first entering London, difficulty presented itself to me in the vilest form. Then my cry was raised more heartily, “God wilt thou now help me? I will be thy child if thou wilt have me.” Deliverance was sent the very moment. Alone in London not knowing any one, standing in the street, not able to speak a word, five miles to the address of my letter, God saw and heard me and sent a cab that took me to my destiny. But there amongst seven of my countrymen, with temptation on all hands, my old sins were presented before me.

Glory be to God! after two days struggle I got the victory in my soul, but still the carnal nature was there which had to be kept down by the power of God, by prayer and watching continually. In two months I was by myself, not finding a Swedish Christian in London from whom I could get counsel or advice. But glory to Jesus he did lead me and used me to testify to my companions, even to the pastor of the church because I understood by his sermons that he was unconverted. I testified to him what the Lord had done for me, he got vexed and said, I should not be cracked in my brain as some of the Christians were. In eight years I was there and testified little wherever I was led. Then I began to try to preach and started a mission for Finnish and Swedish sailors, south-east of London, that has been left over to the Finnish minister.

I left London in 1884 for Liverpool where I have been helping “Strangers Rest,” and Scandinavian church, but up to December 1892, it was a struggling life because of this carnal nature; one day very happy and another day downcast. I had the idea that I could not live without sin. A voice said: “Christ is given for wisdom sanctification and redemption.” In a moment I said, God canst thou make me holy? Do make me as holy as thou possibly can. I told the Lord to send some men to preach sanctification, and He answered my prayer in sending Bro’s. Achor and Henry. They made some of us rather startled at first. Talking rather plain and straight about the word of God, and of the second definite work of grace, but the Holy Spirit drew me to them. Bro. Achor in speaking about the carnal nature said it could be taken out. I asked God to take away this carnal mind and glory to God, from that day I have been living without sin, kept by the power of God; daily walking in his footsteps. Now I stand on the rock. The Holy Spirit is my guide into the whole truth and the Lord has wonderfully blessed my soul. Through Bro. Henry’s instrumentality I have been brought clear out of Methodist sectism and I have consecrated my whole life and all I have, business and family, praise the Lord! My dear wife has also come to the golden altar as an offering for sanctification. Last Wednesday four came out for sanctification. We have glorious times. I have left all in the Lord’s hands to use me if he sees fit. I greet all the children of God all over the world with love.

Yours saved and sanctified through faith in Jesus,

Carl Alexius Hasselstrom.

Dear Saints of the Most High God: I feel led to write my testimony. I do thank the Lord that he has called me out of the darkness of this sinful world into the light of the gospel. Praise the Lord! Pray for me that I might be healed of the ague.

_____

Leech’s Corners, Pa.

To all the Dear Saints, Greeting: My testimony this lovely morning is, I am saved from all sin and evil and the very appearance of evil, and the God of peace does sanctify my soul just now, and will forever if I always trust him. He says he will never leave nor forsake those that put their trust in him. O bless and praise his holy name forever and ever. Dear ones, I cannot tell with pen nor tongue what God has done for me. I did have such a desire to go to the Grand Junction camp meeting this year, but did not get to go, but Jesus knows all about it, so I just leave it all with him, but I never did feel such deep interest in any meeting before and I hope many precious souls were born into the kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. For this end I truly prayed.

Let us watch and be sober for truly the end is near. I do feel so unable to do much, but I do want to so live every day of my life, that it may be said of me as was said of one of old, She hath done what she could. O I do bless and praise God this day for a Bible salvation, that saves me just now.

From your sister abiding in the true vine, of which my Father is the husbandman,

Melissa Donnell.

Dear Saints: I ask you all to pray for me on Sunday, July 16th that I may be healed of all my bodily infirmities and deformities, that I may be every whit whole, both in body and soul. I have been unable to walk for fourteen years. My afflictions were caused by spinal meningitis, which settled in my limbs causing them to be useless. Many of you will remember me as the cripple who went about in a wheel chair at the camp-meeting last month. I believe my healing will be to the honor and glory of God. In my present condition I feel that I cannot serve God to the extent I should, and I have a deep consciousness that I am a detriment to his cause while in my present condition.

The German Work.

_____

The German paper has not been started for want of sufficient means and a chosen man of God to edit it. Bro. DeDerer feeling that the Lord has not called him to edit the paper, has taken his departure to take up another line of work in another place. A number of the tracts have been translated and printed, also the book on Divine Healing has been translated and we hope to have it published this fall. Bro. Ebel is busy setting the type. As soon as the Lord moves on his chosen one to come and edit the paper, and the necessary type etc. are provided, that department of the work will be started. We believe the Lord has one whom he has anointed for the place. Let all the children of God pray for this work.

__________

THE CHILDRENS HOME.

_____

In the past we have frequently made mention of the “home,’’ and some of the needs, — which as yet have not all been supplied — but a few applications have just been made which prompts us to ask each one of you to aid in this great work by your faithful prayers. The Word says; The prayer of a righteous man availeth much: so we know something will be done if all go to praying the prayer of faith. The schoolroom, will not accommodate over twenty-five scholars, and that number probably is all that can find suitable apartments for staying on the grounds with the present facilities. Perhaps the Lord will move on some one to get the size of certain rooms, and furnish a full outfit, which would greatly help along the work, as but few of the rooms are furnished.

The principle aim of the school and home, is to furnish a place for the children of ministers who are called of God to go forth and preach the gospel, and have no home provided for them.

All the laborers there, have been giving there services free. A number of whom have faithfully labored for months in that way and trusted God to provide for their temporal needs. And in the same way Bro. Orr, has labored in teaching the school, and instructing the children in the way of holiness. As a result of his labors, among those saved during the term of school, two of them are now giving their whole time, and working with all their might for the salvation of souls, by helping to spread the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ.

We have before us a letter from a dear minister of God who has been almost constantly traveling as an evangelist, and been instrumental in the salvation of many souls, who has three motherless children that he desires to place in the “Home” here; and says until he can find a place for them he will be hindered from going out into the work of the Lord as he should.

There are many just such cases. The demands at present are greater than the ability to supply. It is a very humble beginning, and seemingly but a small affair, but the Lord is in it, and in his own way will receive glory. We feel greatly interested in the work there and would ask you to pray earnestly for all who are working on the grounds, and especially for Bro. and Sister Michels, whom the Lord has given the responsibilities of the work at present; also for Bro. Orr, and family, who expect to continue the school in a few weeks, unless the Lord has some one else chosen for the place. Also pray for the advancement of the work at the Trumpet office. Who will make this a subject of daily prayer?

UNCLEAN SPIRITS.

_____

When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be unto this wicked generation. — Matt. 12:43-45.

THIS scripture has reference to a man possessed of the devil, and as some people in these days are really possessed of evil spirits the same as in the days of the apostles, it is well to fully understand the Word in such cases. A person in such a condition is not where they can make a Bible consecration; not where they can believe for salvation, although many are making a very high profession of religion. The evil spirits must first be “cast out by the Word” but this does not place such an one in a saved state, but only leaves him in a condition where he can repent and get saved. Here is the point that all ministers and gospel workers should remember, and see to it that when devils have been cast out of anyone, that the next important step be taken immediately, and that is to get the soul saved lest the unclean spirit which is cast out should wander around and return and find the place empty — without the spirit of God — without a ray of heaven’s light, “swept and garnished,” with but little if any opposing power to prevent an entrance. And being recruited with other evil spirits an entrance is soon made and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

Whom the Lord sends forth to preach his gospel he gives power over all the power of the enemy,” and clothes them with authority over unclean spirits.

There are various conditions, and experiences regarding the power of the devil over mankind, of which we have not the space here to present. Some are possessed of legions of devils; others who are not really possessed seem to be led at will by the devil at times. Some having a stubborn will seem to let the devil have full benefit of their stubbornness until they are in his clutches to a certain extent. Others have their nerves touched; still others get under the influence of anti-christ spirits of various kinds, and become an easy prey to the delusions and deceptions of the devil.

Often people who have considerable trouble in getting a settled experience come to the conclusion that the devil has taken possession of them, when it is only a trick of Satan to try to get them to believe such a lie, so they will quit trying to serve the Lord. When the devil is in a person he generally denies being there, but manifests himself some other way, besides speaking of it himself.

Besides taking possession of a person by really entering in, Satan has many ways of deceiving souls by making them “believe a lie that they might be damned.” He goes about “as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.”

I once met a man who had once been saved, but having since lost the grace of God out of his soul, he was in a bad condition, yet earnestly desiring salvation. But when a few of God’s children gathered together to pray for him, it seemed as if Satan was determined to deceive the man if possible, and use his stubborn will to destroy his soul. The man declared there was no salvation for him, and not a ray of hope; saying the Spirit of the Lord did not draw him any more. He even refused to make an effort to get saved, and would not kneel down when we prayed. Having inquired of the Lord we found there was hope for him and kneeling down we rebuked all the powers of the devil, in the name of Jesus, and called upon God to bring him to repentance and save him.

Upon rising from our knees, we found him sitting, apparently in the same sulky, defiant mood, he claiming the devil had control of him yet. But we told him by the authority of God that the devil had been rebuked and had no more power over him in keeping him from getting saved, and only his will was in the way, and as soon as his will was put in line with God’s will, he could get saved. He soon saw the point, and as we again knelt in prayer he knelt also, and as he yielded his stubborn will, the Lord soon began to melt him down, and in a few minutes the man arose praising God for the real joys of salvation.

If we would believe the whispers of Satan, many souls would go down to perdition, just because Satan said there was no hope. Thank God! He reveals by his Spirit the real condition of the souls of men, and brings to light the hidden things of darkness. As long as a person walks in all the light they have received on the word of God they are hedged about by walls of salvation and have a safe guard against all unclean spirits.

GOOD COUNSEL.

_____

A wise man is always ready to hear counsel. The fool takes no advice. We are judged by our words. Hence “The mouth of the righteous shall deliver them.” Here is a wonderful incentive to testimony. The words are the exponent of the heart. You know every thing by its voice, from the grunt of the swine to the roar of the lion. A man is known by his doctrine. Reader, be sure your mouth has the right ring. True doctrine will lead you into true experience and up to heaven, while false doctrine will lead you into a false, or no experience, and down to hell. Be sure your doctrine is correct. The sects abound in skepticism, infidelity and heathenism. Be sure you believe in the new birth and entire sanctification. Nothing is so important as bread. Bread for the soul is infinitely more important than bread for the body. A man may have boundless wealth and yet starve to death. Just so, you may belong to the finest church, and have the most pompous religion, and starve to death for lack of the bread of life, and make your bed in hell.

We cannot serve God and Satan. Jesus is the believer’s master, he is almighty, good, kind, truthful, a Savior and teacher and exemplifier of true holiness. His servants are the angels, the saved and the holy. (Are you holy?) They love him, serve him, and will reign with him forever. His free gift is Eternal Life! But now, being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, etc. Rom. 6:22.

Satan is the sinner’s master. He is carnal, a deceiver, a destroyer and the great opposer of true holiness. His servants are devils and the impenitent. They are deceived by him, serve him, will suffer with him forever. His wages, Eternal Death! “Know ye not that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?’’ — Rom. 6:16. Jesus commands his people to be holy and to live in holiness and righteousness all the days of their lives. Read Luke first chapter. Be ye, therefore, perfect even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. Jesus promised to save from sin. Holiness is an experience, blessed, sweet with relative duties. As we received Christ, so we must walk in him. We get the experience at the end of a thorough Bible consecration and an abiding faith in the merits of the cleansing blood. Hence, such expressions as Be ye steadfast, etc. always abounding in the work of the Lord. — 1 Cor. 15:58, or that which is altogether just shalt thou follow that thou mayest live. — Deut. 16:20. It is the sweetest life to live this side of heaven. But remember the life and the reward of holiness depend on our fidelity to God in the duties of the life of holiness. Then comes the question, Why should not we be holy? Can you have anything better, or as good? can anything make us as happy, or as useful? can anything make us as safe, or take us out of hell, or take us to heaven? God says, “Be ye holy, for I am holy.” Is it not a very good reason to be holy, because God asks us to be holy? Is it the best of reasons to be holy because it will make us like God? Is it not better to be like God than not to be like him?

Again I ask, will you be holy? If not, why not? Have you any reason for not being holy? Do you say you will have to give up your church which you do not want to give up? But is it not better to willingly give it up now, to be holy and like God than to be compelled to give it up after a while, and forever remain unholy? You are asked only to renounce unholiness. But you say your church is not unholy, then why is it you have to give up your church to be holy, if it is not unholy? Your church does not even claim to be holy. If the members of a church are unholy, then the church is unholy for the members make the church. Who ever heard of a church that did not have any members. But do you say it is boasting to claim to be holy? Is it boasting to say you have simply obeyed God, seeing it is impossible to see him without holiness? Heb. 12:14, 2 Tim. 2:22, 1 Tim. 6:11.

Brother, sister, are you conscious of any evil within, such as pride, anger unholy lust, worldliness, etc? Then you are not holy in the full sense in which God requires you to be. Perfect consecration and full trust will bring entire holiness to you. To-day is God’s time for salvation. 2 Tim. 2:21, 1 Thess. 36:13,

J. L. Speed.

Hoppertown, Mich., July 6, 1893.

Dear Brethren: I feel like reporting the work of the Lord in this place. It seems that the work is only just begun. Sister Bush had her name taken from the sect class book last Saturday her husband, a sectarian preacher, announced his intention of walking in all the. light, at prayer meeting last night. Others under conviction. Praise the Lord! Meeting Saturday night and Sunday. Well this leaves me saved with victory in my soul.

Your sister saved just now,

Reynolds, Neb., July 3, 1893.

Dear Saints of God: I praise the dear Lord tor salvation this morning, that saves and keeps me free from all sin. My school is out and I feel led of the Lord to tell the dear saints my determinations. I am all on the altar for Christ and the salvation of souls. Praise his dear name! My wife and I have consecrated all to the Lord’s work. He has wonderfully blessed me in preaching and understanding his Word, for which I give him all the glory. We feel that the dear Lord wants us to go to the coast with Bro. Green, which we will gladly do if he furnishes the means. But praise the dear Lord we expect to keep in the front ranks and push the battle until we get an honorable discharge and go home to glory. Whether we are in California, or Nebraska, or wherever we are, we belong to Jesus.

Your saved and sanctified brother in the work for all time and eternity,

E. G. Masters.

Dear Saints of God: I am glad to say that we are still saved and walking in the light of God and laboring for the salvation of perishing souls. I also wish to say that I did expect to be ready to start for the western coast by this time, but it seems as if the Lord wants me to stay and attend the Hollenberg, Kan. camp meeting and then start from there. The dear Lord is also moving upon the hearts of some blessedly saved and consecrated young workers to accompany us. We are trusting God for the means to go with and will just say to those who have written to us, if you still feel led to send us the money to come on we will use it in bringing the company. Those feeling led to go are Bro. Stover, Jr. and Bro. E. G. Masters, who has consecrated all and has started out in the work of God for life. We all expect to remain in the west just as long as the Lord wants us to. Anyone between here and there, wishing us to stop off for a short time with them can write to us and when we are settled on the route we will take, we can let you know.

Your brother and sister separated unto the Gospel,

Dear Saints: God bless you all and while we all rejoice to day, because of a free country, may you all rejoice more in the freedom wherewith Christ hath made you free. We just closed a very successful meeting here to-day. For the past three weeks God has been saving precious souls in this place. So far as we can learn this is the first time the pure gospel has ever been preached here. There have been large crowds of earnest listeners every service, quite a number of whom got saved. Eight dear souls were buried with Christ by baptism last Sabbath. After returning from the water we engaged in a very precious little ordinance meeting, in which sixteen took a part. Some who were privileged to come to this meeting who had not been clear on the ordinances were made happy through obedience. Praise the dear Lord! And while we knew no people here and it was a new place, we are made to say, Oh what a glorious meeting it has been! Truth will prevail. We thank the kind friends here for their thoughtfulness about the needs of the workers. There are many friends to the truth here.

Dear Bro’s and Sisters, Greeting: Since I wrote last to the TRUMPET I have been wonderfully blessed in preaching the Word. Many souls have received the truth. I went to Silome Springs, where at first they objected to me unless I would not say anything about ordinances. But I told them I could not compromise. I asked them to open their house or I would preach on the street. One “Goodway” Bro. said he was afraid it would cause their band to “bust up,” but said they would open the house awhile anyway. So I commenced meeting on Saturday night in the name of Jesus and did not shun to preach the Word till Thursday following. Although by myself as far as human aid is concerned, the Lord manifested a wonderful power. One dear soul came out in the full light and was buried with Christ in baptism. Five or six others of the Good Way professors accepted the truth and began to strive for the experience. I had to return home, where I had meeting at Pea school house, three services with good interest. Last Saturday Bro. and Sister Harmon, myself and wife visited Bro. Armstrong. Had a glorious meeting over Sabbath. Results, Bro. Armstrong was sanctified on the 4th of June and greatly strengthened in body. Monday morning he and his wife were buried with Christ in baptism and God witnessed by the power of his Spirit. Praise his dear name!

Your brother sanctified now,

Atlanta, Kan., June 26, 1893.

Dearly Beloved of the Lord, Greeting: We are much thankful to God for his loving kindness to usward, in blessing with another precious meeting in the salvation of precious souls. The Lord was with us in much power from the commencement to closing. The saints rented the M. E. meeting house for two weeks, which time we occupied with the exception of two days. From there we went to the Evergreen school house. God’s word was wonderfully fulfilled in making the crooked ways straight and the rough ways smooth. Praise his holy name. The church was wonderfully strengthened. All divisions disappearing by the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Ghost. Praise the Lord! Some nineteen or twenty souls found their way to the altar, where the Lord met them in tender mercy, forgiving their many sins. Nearly all consecrated for entire sanctification. The Lord is stirring up the elders here for a getting out into the field to rescue perishing souls from an eternal destruction. May the dear Lord open up the way and remove every hinderance out of the way. Fourteen followed the example of Jesus in the ordinance of baptism. The Lord poured out his Spirit upon us as a token of his love to them that obey him. At night we met at dear Bro. and Sister Reynolds for an ordinance meeting which was a very precious waiting on the Lord. Thirty-seven souls enjoyed the blessedness of washing the saints feet and partaking of the loaf and wine in commemoration of our crucified Lord. O how precious and sweet his presence while in love and meekness we bowed at his feet and obeyed his loving command. We would have loved very much to have had the pleasure of meeting the dear saints at the Grand Junction camp meeting and enjoyed the heavenly feast, but the dear Lord saw fit to keep us here and give us a a real camp meeting in our souls, while rescuing the lost in these parts. We are thanking God and the dear saints for their many prayers in our behalf.

Yours in the faith of Jesus, with eternal victory in our souls,

OBITUARIES.

_____

Sister Emma Reece departed this life May 30, 1893, at Wade, Mo.; age 20 yrs., 1 mo. and 15 days. Was converted in a holiness meeting over five years ago, sanctfied in the same meeting, or shortly afterward. Married to Bro. W. Reece in Sept. 1890. She was a faithful, conscientious Christian and when the disease, consumption, fastened upon her she was resigned to the will of the Lord. Through the prayers of the saints she would be relieved at times of much suffering and not confined to her bed. As she neared the city of gold her experience was glorious and she was permitted to behold it even before her spirit took its flight. Said she saw the good people and they were singing the “Golden Gates,” and tried to help them sing it. She talked of death as only those can who have made preparation for it; gave instruction for her burial; requested a white dress, but said, “put no ribbons on me.” How different from the many fashionable funerals of to-day. She exhorted the unsaved to come to Christ and when the end was near, closed her eyes and said, “Praise the Lord!” Thus passed away ope of earth’s bright jewels and we too can say, “Praise the Lord that another one we saw converted, is now not only saved, but safe.” Hallelujah! She leaves a husband, a little boy, a sister and many will miss her, but their loss is her eternal gain. God bless the husband, keep him true and faithful as was his departed wife. Funeral services by the writer.

Your sister in Christ,

C. A. Sunderland.

Huldah Wickersham, of New Pittsburg, Ind., departed this life June 27, 1893; aged 64 years and 22 days. Mother Wickersham was a faithful wife and mother. Her aged husband and children, (three in number), are all living to mourn the loss. She also had the care of rearing two other children, who are also still living. She had been for many years a professor of religion. Seven years ago she received the light of holiness under the preaching of the gospel in the evening light. Though her faith was never strong enough to grasp all the fullness; her desires have been to serve God in this life. Since her illness she renewed her covenant with God, and testified to the saving power in Jesus’ blood. Funeral services were held by the writer in Praise Chapel, and were largely attended. God help the bereaved ones to prepare to meet mother in the sweet by and by.

CLEANLINESS.

_____

THE Word teaches us that we should cleanse ourselves from all the filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 2 Cor. 7:1. Some seem to think this reaches only to tobacco users and such like, but dear ones, it reaches farther still, for God further says, let all things be done in decency and in order and therefore, whether we eat or drink or whatsoever we do, do all to the glory of God. All things, not only part. So this will take us right down to our homes. We must comply with the word of God in 2 Cor. 3:2. He says for us to be living epistles, read and known of all men. We are the salt of the earth, the light of the world. Cleanliness is godliness. Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord. Order has been one of the ruling elements from the beginning of creation to the present time in all God’s work. The work of the Lord is a perfect work and he teaches us to be clean, so may our lives be in perfect harmony with the Word, that the gospel of Christ be not hindered and souls stumble over us.

__________

A QUESTION ON BAPTISM.

_____

If a person has boon truly converted, and baptized by immersion, while yet in sectism, and has walked up to all the light received on the Word of God, is it necessary for that person to be baptized again after having been led of the Lord, out of sectism and wholly sanctified in the evening light?

S. M.

ANSWER. There are very few people now in sectism who have a real clear experience of salvation or have had scriptural baptism. There are many who think they have had but are mistaken. My advice to all whose baptism has not been according to the Word, is to attend to the matter at once. There are doubtless exceptional cases and such as the above I do not consider that such a person would be under any obligations, according to the Word of God, to be rebaptized, because only backsliders are commanded to “Repent, and do the first works.” And the person just described is one who has been living up to all the light given and that is all God requires of anyone. But if a person has only been converted to his sect instead of to the Lord, and baptized in that way; or has been living an ungodly or backslidden life, and when the Word of God is preached in its purity, such a person is found with only a profession and the Word brings condemnation to the soul, then it would he necessary to be baptized again.

In speaking of Babylon the Word says: “They shall not take of thee a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations.” Some get the idea that this includes the renouncing of all baptism of any kind received while in sectism. Let us consider the matter. We find that immersion is the only mode of baptism set forth in the word of God, hence, all other modes, such as sprinkling, pouring, etc., would belong to Babylon. To baptize a sinner, a lunatic, or an infant, even by immersion would be unscriptural and would come under the same class. It would be Babylon baptism for any child of God to be baptized by immersion simply because the sect to which he or she belongs teaches that mode. But to one who has not had the light on sectism and has a real experience of salvation constantly living up to all the light God has given, and has been convinced by reading the Word, that immersion is the true and only mode and is baptized by a true man of God, in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, such a baptism is scriptural. And such persons, when the light of full salvation is preached, and they gladly step out into the glorious evening light, do not take a stone from Babylon, because their baptism was scriptural, and I know of nothing in the Word teaching that such persons should be baptized again.

__________

USURY.

_____

He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent, he that doeth these things shall never be moved. Psa. 15:5. With the real inspiration of God in our soul, we feel impresssed it would be to his glory to consider this matter in the likeness of God’s word. Eph. 2:10, for we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Isa. 29:21-24. That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nought. Therefore thus saith the Lord, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob, Jacob shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now wax pale. But when he seeth his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel. They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine.

God has called us unto holiness The question now before us is one of the most important ones for us to consider, for verily “the love of money is the root of all evil.” While some do not love money better than the law of God, never-the-less they had not come to the knowledge of God’s law concerning the matter of usury. By usury is generally understood the gain of anything above the principal or that which was lent and exacted only in consideration of the loan. The law of God prohibits rigorous imposing of condition of the borrower, whether he gain or lose, whether poverty occasioned his borrowing or a visible prospect of gain by employing the borrowed goods. And if thy brother be waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt relieve him: yea, though he be a stranger, or a sojourner; that he may live with thee. Take thou no usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee. Thou shalt not give him thy money upon usury, nor lend him thy victuals for increase. I am the Lord your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God. — Lev. 25:35-38. Thou shalt not lend upon usury to thy brother; usury of money, usury of victuals, usury of anything that is lent upon usury: Unto a stranger thou mayest lend upon usury; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon usury: that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all that thou settest thine hand to in the land whither thou goest to posess it. — Deut. 23:19-20.

Notice the words of the Lord upon those who take usury. Their prayers are an abomination unto him according to Prov. 28:8, 9 — He that by usury and unjust gain increaseth his substance, he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor. He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayers shall be abomination. Read Ezek. 18:10-13; 22:12. The prophets reckon it as one of the curses in which was evil in the sight of God. Read Jer. 15:10. The prophet exclaims, “He that puteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent; he that doeth these things shall never be moved.” — Psa. 15:5. The Hebrews were plainly commanded in Ex. 22:25, etc., not to receive usury for money from any that borrowed for necessity, as in that case in Neh. 5:5, 7 and such provisions the law made for preserving of estates to their families by the year of Jubilee, for a people that had little concern in trade, could not be supposed to borrow money, but out of necessity. But they were allowed to lend upon usury to strangers, whom yet they must not oppress. This law, therefore, in the strictness of it seems to have been peculiar to the Jewish state, but in the equity of it it obliges us to shew mercy to those we have advantage against. Be ye therefore merciful as your Father also is merciful. — Luke 6:36. The disciple is not above his Master, but everyone that is perfect shall be as his master. O dear ones, it does mean so much to have no other gods before the Lord. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter,” Fear God and keep his commandments for this is the whole duty of man.”

S. S. VanBuskirk.

__________

A PURE CHURCH.

_____

THAT he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. — Eph. 5:26, 27. So the church is to be without blemish.

Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. — Matt. 5:48. Perfect in living a Christian life in every respect. “If ye love me keep my commandments.” — Jno. 14:15. To the law and to the testimony. We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain. — 2 Cor. 6:1. Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers. — Verse 14. Wherefore, come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. — Verse 17. Here is the promise if we do what he has commanded us to do.

Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh, and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 2 Cor. 7:1. Here is something that we must do ourselves. Oh yes, says one. If I had light on certain things I would quit them. Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. — Jno. 8:12.

We may not understand at once, but “as ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him.” As we get the light we must walk in it. If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 1 Jno. 1:7.

Here in this country there are all kinds of crookedness and crooked teaching so much that there is trouble even in families that need not be. Why is it so? Because they do not all see “eye to eye.” Read Isa. 52:8. — Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice, with the voice together shall they sing, for they shall see eye to eye when the Lord shall bring again Zion, (the church). Read Isa. 28:17. — “Judgment also will I lay to the line”: also songs of Solomon 2:15. — “The little foxes spoil the vine.” God help us to keep ourselves unspotted from the world. We have some among us that drink coffee, tea and cider and feed their children the same, and say they are not convicted of doing wrong. Hezekiah wanted a sign, but Isaiah said, The thing the Lord hath spoken. The word is sufficient. If we will listen to the Spirit, the Spirit and the word agrees. Praise the Lord! Paul says, Thess. 5:22, Abstain from all appearance of evil. May God bless all of his true children and reveal his light to them continually.

Hugh Caudel.

Dear Trumpet Readers: It is with pleasure that I write my testimony this evening. We are saved and sanctified through the truth, standing upon the Rock. I want all the saints to pray for us, that we may be strong in the Lord.

Dear Saints of God: I am glad that I can still testify that I am saved and sanctified and kept by the mighty power of God. Have a real knowledge of an indwelling Christ. Am kept in perfect peace, for my mind is stayed on God. O bless the name of Jesus! my soul is joyful in glory. I do praise the dear Lord for real victory in my soul and my faith lays hold upon God. I am so glad that I am saved during these perilous times, for it is dangerous to be out of Christ. The enemy has so many devices planned for the destruction of souls, that it is hard for people to get out of his clutches. Pray for me.

Yours, saved and under the blood.

Dear Saints of God: It is with much love to all the church of God to write my testimony. I am out on all of God’s promises, trusting Him for all things. I have victory in my soul over the beast, over his mark, and over his name, and am out on the sea of glass mingled with fire. I am separated unto the gospel of Christ to do the will of God.

Your brother saved to the utter most,

J. B. Strickland.

Dear Children of the Most High God. There is an old man and his wife here who want me to write to you and tell you that they have a little boy that is deaf and dumb. His name is Archie Downing. He is ten years old and is a bright little boy. Now they want you to pray earnestly that the Lord may loose his tongue and open his ears. Now I lay the case before you and I know that you know how to take it to God.

I know that God saves me now and I want you to pray for me. I am all given up and want to stand free for Christ. Now beloved, please pray for this boy.

Dear Saints of God and Trumpet Readers: I am praising God for full salvation. Am free from all sectism, vanities and pleasures of this world. He cleanses me from all sin and am sanctified to do his will. I do praise the Lord for bringing me out of darkness into this glorious evening light. I am old in years, but a babe in Christ. We have prayer meetings three times a week. We look for some of God’s messengers soon. I ask the prayers of all the saints, that we may ever live faithful.

Your sister in Christ,

Mrs. Eliza Hay.

To all the Dear Saints, of the Living God: I can say this morning that I am saved and sanctified to do the whole will of God, just as he makes it known to me. I can say that a few weeks ago it was made known unto me, through the blessed Spirit of our heavenly Father, that I should go and teach his ways to the people here. Glory and praise be to my heavenly Father, that he has seen fit to sanctify me through faith in our blessed Redeemer to do his holy will This is a place where there has been much prejudice against this way, but by the help of my blessed Redeemer the prejudice is breaking away and I think there will be many souls saved here yet. Now I want all who read this to pray for me that I may hold out in doing the Lord’s will for he says, He that standeth take heed, lest he fall. Now as I am weak and in a wicked place I want the prayers of all that I may hold out faithful. I praise the Lord for his goodness to me in bringing me out in this evenig light. Praise the Lord!

Dear Brethren: Some time ago I sent for a book on Divine Healing. I think it a wonderful book. It has wonderfully increased my faith in God and not mine only but many others, as I have some one reading it all the time. It is doing much good in this part of the country, and the people are coming out in the evening light. There is a faithful little band of God’s children here in our neighborhood. Most all are in the blessing of perfect love. God is wonderfully pouring out his Spirit on us and giving us victory over the works of the devil for he is at work. But praise the dear Lord, Jesus is our captain and is leading this little band from victory to victory. God is leading his children to see the effects of sectism and calling them out. We have written to one of God’s ministers to come out and preach for us and if he does not come we will send money to the Gospel Trumpet Office, for anyone led of the Spirit to come out here. God’s servants will be cared for and good homes will be opened for him. God bless you all. Amen.

Yours in Christ,

A. B. Peterman.

Dear Friends of Jesus: I believe it is the will of God that I ask you to pray for me, that I may be healed of trouble with my lungs. Last fall I was sick with malarial fever and did not call a doctor, but I have coughed all winter and still am far from well as I was before I was sick. I believe my sickness was caused from overwork and was the works of the devil. I am alone, with no one to pray with me, except my little children. Pray that I may have grace to stand firm and wisdom to discern the works of the devil. Dear ones, my heart yearns for your society. I love the Lord and all his own. Twelve years I have stood alone here in Millbank, with few to sympathize with me and none to believe as I do. The light shone clearly on my heart when I was saved thirteen years ago and there can be no changing my belief. I know my name is written in heaven, and I am a member of the church, the body of Christ. I never tire of my Master, for I have found it good to serve God and the way grows better and brighter. Truly I have found his ways are ways of pleasantness and all his paths are paths of peace. There is no place of worship here. I am praying constantly that the saints may come here and the way opened to have meetings. I am in hopes Bro. Jacobson will be led to come. As the dear Lord leads, so let us follow and glorify him.

I remain yours and Christ’s faithful and true witness,

Hattie A. Douglas.

Dear Ones in Jesus: May grace, love and joy fill your souls just now. I have felt for some time that God would be glorified in my giving in my testimony, but there are so many each week that I thought it unnecessary. But the Word says, “They overcame by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony.” Well I am so glad I can tell you Jesus sweetly saves me just now and gives me a real experience in my soul. It is some over two years since God saved me in this, beautiful evening light and I have stood firm ever since. Shortly after God saved me I was taken very sick with LaGrippe. I wrote to the TRUMPET for prayers, but constantly grew worse until all despaired of my life. I was perfectly resigned to go, but it seemed not to be Father’s time to take roe home. All through my sickness the words were ringing in my ears, If you are healed, will you leave all and preach. It was so hard to say “Lord I will do whatever you want me to,” but when I did, He did the rest. I left my bed perfectly well and was well for about four months, I when I began to gradually lose I strength, until I could not do any work to speak of. I asked God what the trouble was and soon found he want- me at the Trumpet Office. O praise the Lord forever! Well I came as soon as possible and it was wonderful what strength he gave me and has given me ever since to work for him. I cannot preach with my mouth, but praise the Lord! he gives me strength to preach with my fingers. O I find it so sweet to work for Jesus and to do all for his glory. My life is truly hid with Christ in God and I find him all sufficient for every time of need.

Your humble sister,

Belle Coston.
