My Mother’s Prayers.

_____

How precious the days of my bright happy childhood,
When free from life’s burdens and care!
My mind wanders back to the old family circle,
When Father and Mother were there.
In morning’s bright rays or in evening’s dim shadows,
Ho matter how busy they were,
Dear brothers and sisters were all gathered round them
And knelt at the altar of prayer.

Chorus —
Dear Mother has gone! That sweet voice is silent;
Her face no more here will I see;
But high up in Heaven in bright golden vials,
Those prayers are all treasured for me.

The first I remember in youth’s early morning —
The thought is most precious and dear —
My brother and I by her side were both kneeling,
While Mother was pleading in prayer.
As older I grew and my feet wandered outward,
A prodigal hopeless in sin,
Those prayers stopped my progress in that sad direction
And turned my steps backward again.

When manhood was reached and I left the home circle,
My lot to fulfill in life’s call,
The gospel words came, “Go thou forth to the nations”
And “preach the glad tidings to all.”
As onward I went on my far away mission
O’er land and tempestuous sea,
Way back in that home on her knees at the altar
Dear Mother kept praying for me.

How often I felt it when battling with powers
To sink my sad soul in despair,
A heavenly glory broke through the thick darkness —
The answer to her fervent prayer!
But what a sad change has come! like the short moments
That swiftly pass over our head,
That dear loving one has now ceased her petitions, —
A telegram — “Mother is dead!”

My heart feels its sorrow, bereft of dear Mother,
The loss of those prayers that have ceased;
And if I too much upon them have depended,
God grant that my own be increased.
But as I look upward to Heaven’s bright altar,
A glorious vision I see;
Those prayers are all treasured in bright golden vials,
And offered with incense for me.

Men speak of rich pearls from the depth of the ocean,
Of diamonds and gold from the earth;
They tell of their fortunes, their wealth and great treasures,
Their honor, and high royal birth:
Thank God, l’ve a treasure of far greater value
Than earth’s gilded wealth with its cares,
Or man’s boasted honor that fades in a moment —
This treasure is dear Mother’s prayers.

USE WISDOM.

_____

BUT the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable; gentle and easy to be entreated; full of mercy and good fruits; without partiality and without hypocrisy. Jas. 3:17. He that winneth souls is wise. Prov. 11:30. Isay in beginning this, I know nothing by myself, but God gives us lessons for our own good; and when we have the benefit of it, let us give it to others as the Lord leads. As the Word says, able also to admonish one another.

We wish to speak on different lines. One is this: When we go to a place where the evening light has not been preached, that we give the Word or portion of the Word that they need, and raise up a standard for them the first thing, and show them by the Word something better than that they are in possession of. If we go to a new field and begin threshing Babylon the first thing, they won’t understand why we speak against the sects; so they will get stirred up and become prejudiced against the truth and the saints. Jas. says, If any man lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth liberally to all men, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him. Jas. 1:5. If all we had to do were to get the devil stirred, it doesn’t take long to do that. One unsaved man may get another unsaved man stirred, but it takes more than that to get the people saved. So let us show the oneness the body of Christ, and the great plan of salvation, and thresh when the Lord leads, and it will be all right. We should not go at it in self and drive the people away instead of winning them to the truth; and when we do win them let it be to the truth and not to us. Let us know that the compromise line is no more of God than the other, and that we will do the people no good by compromising with them. The enemy wants us to be on one side or the other, of the right; but there is a right line, and God is able to show us the right line.

Let us preach what the Lord gives us, and let the Lord sit in the judgement seat. Let us not get ahead of the Lord and get anxious to fire at some one or to thresh Babylon before the right time. Some people, it seems, have a great zeal or desire to thresh Babylon; but we should have zeal according to knowledge. I heard of one minister that preached against sectism one night, and after meeting he said, “I gave it to them to night, didn’t I?” So if it was he instead of the Lord, it is no wonder the people are so prejudiced there. We were there, and only a few would come out to the meetings; and most of the time the congregations were small.

Now we know sectism is not of God, and never was, and God wants his people out of there, but we can’t drive people to salvation. And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. Jude 23. Here Jude says pulling, not driving them, and as there is such a drawing power in love, let us be sure that we have a heart full of love for their souls, and that we are working for their good and for God’s glory, and not to get people to believe we are something, or a great preacher, or to get them to speak well of us; but we should work for God’s glory, for their souls are just as precious as ours. So let us get the people’s confidence by speaking the truth in love. Let us remember how we were before we were saved, and how little good it did for some one to talk to us when we had no confidence in them, and how much we would receive from one we had confidence in. So he that winneth souls is wise. There is much in the way the Word is given, and how we approach the people, even when the Lord leads us to execute the judgments that are written. We do not need to see how rough language we can use in doing it, but have the same love for their souls we would desire others to have for us if we were in sin. Of course love will not cause us to compromise and hold back the truth. Now we are sure that no person can stay in sectism or go and work with them and keep clear in his soul; that is, after he has the light. But if we find we have such a great desire to thresh Babylon that we can hardly testify or preach without firing at someone, or threshing somebody, let us get under the blood and sink down in humility, until we are willing to let the Lord lead us and have his own way in all things. We need not be afraid of him leading us into sectism or to compromise. He will lead us to expose all crookedness, if we will live close enough to him so he can. So when we go to a place to hold meeting, let us have our wills given up to God’s will, and let the Lord lead, and give what he gives us, and it will be all right. Let us be humble before the Lord, and be willing to be a little preacher. Let us remember that the whole word of God is against sectism, but God is not against the honest-hearted people that are in there, if they will come out as soon as they get the light.

Another thing: Let us avoid giving out meetings ahead and setting the time for them to begin, when we do not know the will of the Lord in the matter, and do not know when the Lord will be through with us where we are. We might be holding meeting and the people under conviction and about ready to get saved, and we feel under obligation to go somewhere else because we had promised to go. So we would go and leave the people just when they were in a good condition to work with, and maybe never find them in as good condition again. Why would it not be wisdom, when we get in a place where there are calls all around us, for us to go from one community to another. It does not take so much of the Lord’s money to travel that way, and we can remain with a work until the people get established or until the Lord raises up some one to feed them; that is, not get so far from them but what we can visit them and feed them. As newborn babes desire the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow thereby. We read of Paul’s going over all the places where he had been. And if people do not get established, and are left too long without teaching, and they do not understand the traps of the enemy, they may backslide and get in a worse condition than before. It is a bad thing for people to get in the habit of backsliding. Of course when this reformation began there were then so few to hold up the light that God sent his messengers hundreds of miles, that the light could be in different states; but now God has raised up so many that there would be no need of so many long trips. But the Lord understands how to run his business. So it is right to go wherever the Lord leads, and not let the enemy run us from one place to another, nor every time we get in a thick battle begin to think if we were off somewhere else a great work would be done. Our experience has been that where we stayed about three weeks in one place a good work was done. At the place where we were before we came here, the meeting went on over two weeks before any one got saved, and before the end of the third week about twenty had come to seek the Lord.

Another thing I wish to speak about is, we should be careful in altar work, that we examine the consecration and see if they are willing to make wrongs right and forgive all, and give up everything that is wrong, and not try to sing them through before they are on believing ground.

And when we are in the work we should wait on ourselves as much as we can, and not make people any more work than is necessary, and not be afraid to take hold and help a little when it is necessary. Laziness and salvation do not work together. And we should not get the most comfortable place we can find and stay right there and not go anywhere else, but go all around to different places as we have opportunity, and show no partiality, and be sure we do not slight the poor and give most of our attention to the strong ones. We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Rom. 15:1. Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. Rom. 14:1. When it says weak in the faith it means one IN the faith; not some dishonest person, but the weak ones are the ones that need the care and help; the stronger ones are able to look to the Lord more. And it is not always the ones that make the most noise that are the most honest and sincere. So let us not be afraid to get out among the poor and weak ones, and encourage them and help them all we can.

Another line is this: When we read the books God has helped the brethren to write, such as the Biblical Trace of the Church, and Masonic Salvation, let us trust God to give us wisdom to know how and when to teach it to others, and not get it so on our minds that every time we get up to talk we will be exposing Masonry or firing at the Catholics. Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Col. 4:5. Milk is for babes, but meat is for them that are of full age. Jesus said to his disciples, I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Jno. 16:12.

So let us use wisdom in all things, that God in all things may be glorified; and let us work every way we can to get souls saved, for the time short. Your brother,

Edward Ellis.

THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL.

Dear Saints: As I feel that the dear Lord wants me to testify through the TRUMPET. I am glad to tell you that I am saved from all sin. Dear Saints: My testimony this evening is that I love God and keep his commandments. Bless the Lord for victory in my soul! I realize that it is only the hand of God that enables me to stand in this crooked and perverse nation. I have not been to a meeting free from error far so long. Oh how I long to attend one not only once but continually! but his will be done in all things, is my prayer. The Good Ways are holding meeting here now. We would be so glad to meet with some of the saints. There are but three or four of us here now, but the Lord is very precious unto us, and I know this evening that I do hate vain thoughts, and love the law of God; and that he is my shield and portion; in him do I trust. I am consecrated to do his will, but it seems like I am doing so little when he has done so much for me. But am trusting the Lord to open the way that I may get out and do more. There are some here who are almost persuaded to accept the truth, and I think they would if they could hear it preached. But they say, Lo here and, lo there, and people are puzzled to know which is the way. Oh I am so glad the Lord showed me the light and I walked in it. Pray for one who loves the true and holy way. Your sister in the one body,

Lucy Kirk.

Lynchburg, S. C.

Dear Saints of God: This is the first time that I have attempted to write to the TRUMPET. But praise the Lord, I feel impressed that he wants me to tell what he has done for me and is still doing. I am saved and in the one body, sanctified and kept by the divine power of God. Whereas I was once blind, I now see. About five years ago I attended an M. E. protracted meeting, was convicted of my sinful condition, sought pardon and claimed to be converted, and joined the M. E. sect. But was soon a worse sinner than before. I went on in sin and lived a wretched life until I think about the summer of 1891. I attended another M. E. meeting, and was again convicted, sought pardon, and claimed again to be converted, and by a hard struggle with the wicked one, and the many temptations and besetments which he brought before me. I lived an up and down life. My temper was the besetting sin. At times I would fly in a passion, and would say and do things that were contrary to the Lord’s will. I would then wrestle with the Lord in prayer and get what I called soul ease; and all this time, until January, ’94, I claimed to be a justified Christian. I then sought sanctification as the only means of grace to keep a person from the power of sin and the wicked one. I consecrated myself to the Lord, and my soul was filled full of the love of Jesus. It was the most glorious baptism of God’s holy love that I had ever experienced in my life, and I claimed God’s sanctifying power; and praise his holy name, he has kept me from the power of the wicked one ever since. Soon after this I began to see the evil and rottenness of sectism and the confusion and division that it brings about. I do praise the Lord that I was led to see that this was not the nature and condition of God’s true church. I do thank God and praise his holy name that he ever sent his flying messengers this way to preach the evening light. Some accepted God’s truth and stepped out on it; others rejected. But I do thank God that I ever had a heart open for the conviction of God’s truth, and to be led by his Holy Spirit. I was convicted by the truth that the power that I had when I previously accepted as the sanctifying grace, was only justification. I lingered a few days under this conviction, though not under any condemnation. Yet God’s peace and sweet presence seemingly had left me, and darkness was coming upon me fast. But I do thank God, and praise his holy name that I was led by his Spirit to reconsecrate myself to the Lord for his sanctifying power. I did, and was filled full of his holy love again. His sweet peace returned and he has kept me living sweetly under the influence of his holy Spirit ever since. The Lord gave me a spiritual discernment of his church the one body, standing out in all of its holy oneness, clear and clean from all sectish confusion and divisions. And I heard the voice of God’s word calling me out of Babylon, and praise His holy name, I stepped out into the one body, the church of God. I feel that the Lord is calling me out into his vineyard to labor and lead souls out of darkness into the light of his full and free salvation. I intend to yield to the leading of God’s Holy Spirit. Though very poor in this world’s goods, yet my Father is rich. The earth is his and the fullness thereof. If any one feels led of the Lord to have some tracts sent me I will be thankful, and by the help of the Lord I will do all I can to carefully distribute them. Would request that all the dear saints remember me, to pray for me. Pray for my dear wife that she may be saved, and come out of Babylon. Jesus sweetly saves me now. I am under the blood, in the one body, saved, sanctified and kept.

Ashford Newell.

THE FRANKLIN TYPEWRITER.

Since the typewriter is becoming a thing of such extensive use, it may benefit some one to inform you that after much examination of various kinds, we have purchased the above machine, and we can truthfully say we are very much pleased with the same. We know of no points of advantage that any machine possesses over it; unless it may be that some of the larger and much heavier machines last longer; and yet we see no reason why they should. But in all candor we can cite points of advantage in the Franklin over any machine we know.

First, the writing takes place on top the roller platen instead of underneath. This is a beautiful point, as it brings the writing immediately to view, and no part of the machine need be raised to read, and make corrections.

Second, it only costs $75, whereas other reliable machines cost $95 and $105.

Third, its plan is so simple and perfect that it performs all the work of any machine, and yet only weighs 12 1/2 lbs. This item is one of great importance to any person wishing to travel and yet have the use of his writer.

For speed and beautiful writing it will compare favorably with the best.

Any one wishing to purchase a machine write us.

_____

Danville, Ill.

Dear Trumpet Readers: We have been talking of God’s goodness to care for our bodies as He does and I believe He would have me to write to some suffering one. “They that are whole have no need of a physician but they that are sick.” — Mark 2:17.

When God created man he was in perfect health (physically and spiritually) for “God saw everything that He had made and behold it was very good.” — Gen. 1:31. Therefore we must acknowledge that sickness it a remit from the fall of man.

I have only found three causes for bodily affliction in the Word. We suffer for sinning against God’s law in any way (Rom. 12:10); or like Job, the devil may think if he uses his power over our bodies we will be willing to “curse God and die,” and Father will permit us to be tried; but glory to God! our latter end shall be more prosperous than the former. Then in the case of the blind man Jesus said that neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the glory of God might be manifest. There is always a reason why we are sick, and if we wait on the Lord patiently, in earnest prayer, He will never fail to show us the reason. Let us always look for the lesson and after we have learned it let us remember.

In Deut. 28th chapter we read of wonderful blessings God promises His children if they are obedient, but in the same chapter we also read the results of disobedience. Now if we read Gal. 3:13, I am sure our hearts will overflow with thanksgiving to our blessed Redeemer, for Christ HATH redeemed us from the curse of the law. Oh, give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good and His mercy endureth forever.

We often hear people say the herbs were made for medicine, and if God created these means He certainly expected us to use them. The Word says the herbs were given FOR MEAT for either us or for food to the animal creation. — Gen. 1:29, 30. And Father says furthermore, that He will bless the bread and water of those that serve Him, and take sickness away out of the midst of them. — Ex. 23:25. Do we believe God? Do you, dear reader, believe when you ask God to bless the food as you sit at meat that He will do it? “According to your faith be it unto you.” If we should accidentally eat anything injurious God is able to deliver us from the evil effects of the same. When we ask God to bless the meal He will bless it, and if God blesses any thing to our good it could not hurt us. Too many ask God to bless their food but do not seem to believe He does. True we must not eat or drink unless we can do it for the glory of God. Nor expect Him to bless to our good what His Word condemns. Nor can we expect God to heal our bodies unless we are willing to lay aside all drinks and all manner of dress which are hurtful to this “temple of the living God.” God give us wisdom!

I have been wonderfully healed by the mighty power of our God at two different times and believe it will be to my Physician’s glory to testify to it now. At seventeen I had I hard fall which caused curvature of the spine and the accompanying internal diseases. I sought medical aid, but, like the woman who sought Christ and said she had spent all her living and was nothing bettered but rather grew worse, I was compelled to believe that medicine could not save me. For seven years I endured intense pain without any relief. I was gradually becoming helpless and my mind was also becoming affected. I realized that I was becoming insane from my suffering. But God in His mercy led me to see the 17th verse of the 8th chapter of Matthew. He gave me the understanding of it and I saw that Jesus on the cross had borne my pains and sickness. One night the pastor said at the altar service, if you want anything of the Lord just come and get it. I went to the altar expecting to get just what I asked for, and praise God I did. I prayed in a simple way that I just saw what Jesus did to carry my diseases and, if Jesus had borne them, it was not necessary or me to bear them again. I was willing to accept His healing, would Father for the Son’s sake heal me now. Instantly I felt the pains cease and I have not had them since. Glory to God! I had been converted and I thought sanctified before this time.

Again, a few weeks ago, I contracted blood poison from handling a diseased infant. I noticed it Friday evening and thought it was mosquito bites, though we had seen no mosquitoes. We prayed that God would keep them from itching. He did, but the next day they stung and burned and I saw the places on my hand were rapidly getting larger. I felt it all over my body as though caterpillars were creeping over me. In the afternoon I was convinced it was blood poison and the dear ones in the Faith Home began to lament my condition, but I raised my hand to God and said they need not worry I had a Physician who could heal it and I felt I had victory right then. But in the evening there were a great number in to our meeting and standing around the outside. I felt the Lord wanted me to make a public statement and ask the elders to anoint me for the glory of God. I did so and felt the power of God through my body, oh praise His dear name! The next exening some who were unsaved, who had seen my hand the evening before, came again and asked to see the red places on my hand; but, bless the Lord, there were none left to be seen, and they had to acknowledge I was healed.

And now, my dear sick friends, do not think God heals some but will not heal you. I used to think that, but afterwards I found out God is no respecter of persons. He will heal you if you come to Him in His way. Another word in closing: So many think it requires some wonderful amount of faith to be healed. It required the same kind of faith and the same amount to heal me that it did to accept Jesus for the pardon of my sins. It takes just the same faith in God and His glorious promises to be pardoned, healed, or sanctified, that your little two-year-old has to believe you will keep your promises to him. Do you love your little one? God loves you a great deal more. Oh, dear ones, don’t be afraid to believe God or to stand out on His promise, but be sure you measure up to all the light you have.

Your sister, healed body and soul.

Mary Houskeeper.

To the Dear Children of God: It has been some time since I have written to the TRUMPET but it has not been that we were idle. We are praising God this morning for a complete salvation.

We have been at home since the 7th of June and have been holding meetings wherever the Lord opened up the way. We are assured our labors have been much blessed of God. He alone knows the amount of good that has been done; and to His name be all the praise.

We have been holding up Jesus to the people at the Quinn S H. and people are becoming deeply interested in the Word. We expect to be in the field again before long, as coworkers with Christ. Pray for us.

Your brother, kept by the power of God,

Dear Saints: We praise the Lord for victory in our souls! The meeting at the Ewald school house closed with victory on the Lord’s side. Two weeks before there were twenty-one that came forward, and most of them seemed to be clear. The people turned out well every meeting; very good order for the size of the congregations. The meeting went on for three weeks. Just before the close we met by the lake and had meeting, and afterward twelve followed the Lord in baptism. The Lord was with us, and owned and witnessed by his Spirit, and sealed the work. At evening we gathered together again and had an ordinance meeting. About twenty-five or thirty took part. The meeting closed that night. We went to LaPaz, and came from there to this place. We are now laboring in a grove meeting. Pray for the meeting. Yours saved,

Edward and T. E. Elus.

… ..ey of God that I am still … joying salvation that saves me from all sin. Bless his holy name! I have just returned from east Mississippi, where we had some good meetings. We found the saints on the onward move for God. Lord bless them. We were at Zion and also at Rights Chapel where we met with dear Bro. W. W. Bradley. Lord bless him is our prayer, and give him victory over all the powers of the devil. Dear ones pray much for me, and the work here in the south. We would be glad if some brother would come down and stay with us through the winter, who is filled with the Holy Ghost. Would be glad if Bro. B. E. Warren and wife could come if the Lord wills. We would be so glad to have some more help in the work. Your brother in Christ,

Floyd’s Knobs, Ind., Aug 25, 1894.

Dear Trumpet Readers: May God’s richest blessings rest upon you all. Well I can report complete victory overall the powers of the enemy. Bless the Lord forever! I realize that I am sinking deeper in God every day, and he keeps me filled with his glory day and night, and puts a vehemence in my soul against the devil and all his works. The South Boston grove meeting was a complete victory for God, even far beyond what we asked or thought. There were some thirty or more saved, and twenty-six baptized. Babylon in that place is left an utter desolation, and the Zion of the living God is established in the top of the mountain, where the whole limit thereof round about is most holy. Hallelujah to God! Sister Della Fry of Michigan, and D. B. Moore of Floyd’s Knobs, Ind. helped in the meeting. Brother Will Schreiber of Floyd’s Knobs was there two or three nights. They were all used of God to the good of souls. We are now at Floyd’s Knobs. The meeting began last night, and we feel there is going to be a grand work done here also. We expect, the Lord willing, to be at the Vichy. Mo. camp meeting. Yours hid away in Jesus,

G. P. Keeling.

Auburn. Neb., Aug. 20, 1894.

To all the Saints of God: We can report a success in the General Western camp. Twenty tents and a number of wagons wore occupied by a large number of hungry saints from Mo. Kan. and Neb. Practical salvation and real spirituality was the theme of the meeting. Advancement was made by many. Attendance was good, considering the hot weather and deep dust. Conviction rested upon the anxious listeners who were compelled to acknowledge the present truth. Many that were possessed or oppressed of the devil were delivered, and several clear cases of healing of the body by the power of God.

The work was deeper and more thorough than any previous meeting in the west that I have attended.

A host of ministers and workers were present, among whom were Bro. and Sister Kinzie, J. Willis, M. M. Stover and son, M. A. Fly, C. W. McDaniels, D. H. Carlton, Geo. Veilguth, A. A. Kriebel, our Co. of six and others, all of whom were greatly benefited and built up in the Lord and will go from this place beter prepared to spread the fire of Bible holiness. Had a glorious ordinance service on Saturday eve. in which more than one hundred took part. On Sabbath morning, fifteen followed the Lord in the ordinance of baptism, which was a very precious scene. Keep on praying for the work in the west. Amen. Your humble brother and co-laborers in this great battle against sin.

North Eagle, Mich., Sept. 3, 1894.

Dear Trumpet Readers: May the dear Lord bless you all. We are happy to report victory in Jesus’ name. We had a blessed meeting at Hopkins. A few precious souls were saved. Four were buried with Christ in baptism; and about forty participated in the ordinances of God’s house. After the ordinance meeting three precious souls were reclaimed and brought back to Father’s house. May the Lord bless and keep them trusting him. We were assisted at this meeting by Bro. Radabaugh whom the Lord used in delivering the Word, also Bro. Lammers and others.

The meeting at North Eagle was one of victory from beginning to end. A few precious souls were saved, and some who had been wavering got a settling down in Jesus. We also closed this meeting with the observance of the ordinances. Dear Sister Myers was with us in these meetings whom the Lord used in delivering the truth. The next Sunday after we closed this meeting we went about ten miles south of here and had meeting over Sunday. The Adventists were holding meeting in the house, but kindly consented to give us the use of the house for three meetings. We had a full house the first two meetings, and on Sunday evening the house was packed and a great many could not get in. We gave them the Word and they were very much interested. All are desirous for our return. I believe there will be a grand opening here for a meeting. Sister Gardner and myself start for the North this evening. We ask your prayers that the Lord may use us to his glory. Our address for a short time will be Pellston, Mich. Sister Myers went to Holt after the Eagle meeting, and expects to stay there some time.

Fenwick, Ont., Sept. 5, 1894.

Dearly Beloved Saints: We greet you all with a triumphant victory in our souls. The Canada camp meeting was a glorious sweeping victory. Souls came flocking to the altar Christ Jesus, service after service, until sixty found their way into the one fold by the new birth. Many entered the second vail, and by so doing were made perfect. Saturday afternoon, Sept. 1. we gathered at the banks of the Chippewa river before a large concourse of people, and immersed eighteen dear souls. This was a scene long to be remembered. Leaving the water, we came back into the camp, and obeyed the ordinance of washing the saints’ feet, and the breaking of the one loaf, (broad) and drinking of the fruit of the vine. Conviction still was upon the people. The last night of service we put out the altar, and three came out and claimed the promise. After meeting, dear souls came to us and said, “Pray for us; we ought to have come out.” Oh! it is wonderful to see the many poor lost souls hungering for the bread of life. Our prayer to God is, raise up more holy men and women, and send them out into the great harvest field after the lost, and stay the progress of those who are not sent. We have many calls in Canada, and feel that it will be to the glory of God to remain a month or so before returning to the states, and would say to the dear ones who are looking for our return to come to your place, Don’t be disappointed by waiting a little longer; We will come as soon as Father will let us go. The Lord willing, on or our return we will stop off a few days with the little ones at McLallens Corners, and from there will visit our father and mother in law at Reimer, Pa. On Sunday evening, we will again open up the battle in Fenwick, in Dr. Bird sail’s hall. Ministers present on the camp ground were Bro’s David Moyer, J no. Smith, S. E. Birdsall, and our company.

Yours in much holy love, all under the blood,

Jno. A. and A. J. Dillon & Co.

Merrill, Mich., Aug. 30, 1894.

Dear Readers of the Gospel Trumpet: May grace and peace abound unto you. The grove meeting near Tekonsha was a success. The first three days, many of the dear saints who saw they had need of more grace, came down before God, and in most every case they received just what they sought for. Praise God! Then there were elements arose that had a tendency to bind some of the little ones, but we were able to rebuke the devil and claim the victory in the name of Jesus. The meeting closed with a glorious victory for God. and there are many souls praising God for victories gained. There were present in the meeting as workers, Bro. Wm. N. and Sister Jennie Smith, Bro. and Sister C. H. Eldridge, Sister Bollinger, Sister Viola Cox and others whose names are in the book of life. There was a general coming together of the saints from the surrounding neighborhoods; from Johnstown, Cold Water, Union City, and Litchfield, and all were generally benefited. Children’s meetings, conducted mostly by Sister Smith were successful. Several very clear conversions, and the little ones much instructed in the way of the Lord. On Monday, the 20th, we went to the lake about three and one-half miles away, and there were five dear saints buried with Christ; and again on the 25th, five others followed Christ in the holy ordinance of baptism. On Saturday evening the ordinance of washing the saints’ feet and partaking of the bread and wine were observed with the rich blessing of God. Truly God did own his people in their humble obedience of his will. There were a few came from near Sherwood, Branch Co. in search of light, and they found him who said, “I am the light of the world,” and he sent them home shouting the praises of God for his saving grace. Bless his holy name! On Lord’s day the Word went forth in searching power, “and we feel that good impressions were made, and we look for fruits in the future. Amen. I am your brother, saved, sanctified and kept,

Grand Junction, Mich., Sept. 4, 1894.

Dear Brethren: As it seemed pleasing to the Lord for me to have a change from the pressing labors and responsibilities of office work for a few days to visit the brethren in Indiana, it was a great source of pleasure and enjoyment to attend the last three days of the Beaver Dam camp meeting which was truly a very precious meeting as reported last week, by Bro. Palmer. The work seems to be rapidly increasing and many of the workers as well as others making spiritual advancement, and being better qualified to rescue souls. God raised up a number at this meeting who feel his hand upon them to go forth and preach the everlasting gospel in all its purity, and will doubtless be much used in saving the lost if they keep humble before God and walk in the light of his word.

Bro. Michels was much used of the Lord, during this meeting and should it in the gospel field the greater part of the time, since the Lord has raised up others to take the direct control of the children at the Home. But he expects to return this week to make arrangements to earn money to pay a number of debts now due at the Children’s Home. We trust the dear Lord will in some way relieve the dear brother of the indebtedness, and soon send him forth again. Dear brethren, send up an earnest prayer not only in his behalf, but also in behalf of the Children’s Home and school; truly we feel God’s approval is upon the work there.

From Beaver Dam, in company with Bro. and Sister Orr, we went to southern Indiana, to the assembly meeting, where we found some precious children of God, and notwithstanding the abundance of rain, and the powers of darkness arrayed against the truth, the word of God had its effect upon the hearts of the people; and the third day of the meeting there were fourteen persons consecrated themselves to the Lord, and the outlook was good for a great gathering of souls into the garner of the Lord.

The next day I visited a brother in Louisville, Ky., then took train for eastern Indania, and met the saints in the vicinity of Praise Chapel, while on my way home. Sisters Fry, and Fink, Bro. Keeling and others were at the Floyd’s Knobs meeting and were used in preaching the word. The Lord has also laid his hand upon Sister Lenora Luther of that place to take charge of the kitchen work at the Trumpet Office. May the Lord abundantly bless his children everywhere.

Wiseman, O.

Dear Saints of God: May the grace of God sustain and keep you. My testimony to day is I am fully saved and trusting the Lord for all things. Our little girl has been very sick. I took her case to the Lord and felt that the Lord would heal her, but my wife being fearful she would not get well, I felt I should comply with James 5:14 and call for the elders. But there being no elders that I knew of under twenty-five miles, I hired a rig and went to West Liberty camp ground, twenty-five miles, distant. When I arrived there the elders were all called away on account of sickness, so we called upon the church at that place and held special prayer for the child. This was about three o’clock in the afternoon, and I left the camp about five o’clock having the confidence that the work was done. Arrived home about midnight, and found the child better, and has been on the mend ever since, and today is quite well. Oh glory to God for this great salvation that keeps us free from sin! and if we do his commands he abideth in us and we in him, and if we ask any thing of him he heareth us, we know we have the petition we desired of him. Oh bless the Lord forever and forever! Your brother in Christ,

E. H. Stratton.

Meriden, Kan.

Dear Sister Bertha Hague entered eternal rest Sept. 1, 1884 in her 36th year. She leaves a dear husband and five little children, a brother and sister to mourn her loss. She was a kind and loving wife and mother, filling her place in life faithfully.

She strove for many years to obey her God without being satified, though see was indeed a child of God by divine birth. Her great afflictions for the past year made her decide to seek the Lord as a Savior from all sin. It fell to me in the providence of God to instruct her in the way of life, and on Aug 3 she yielded herself to God and he graciously forgave her sins, and gave her the joy of knowing her name was written in heaven in the Lamb’s book of life. In a little over a week afterward she yielded herself a living sacrifice, and accepted by faith, the blessed gift of the Holy Ghost as her sanctifier, teacher and Comforter.

She also gave her body into the great Physician’s care according to Jas. 5:13-16, and continued to trust him to do for her what would be for her good and his glory, knowing he abideth faithful; and he kindly relieved her suffering in the times of great need as we called upon him for “present help.” Her earnest prayers ascended to God in behalf of her dear ones and friends that they might be willing to take the narrow way and bear the cross of Christ, and finally win the crown of life. May they also live a life of prayer, and find the blessings thereof as sweet as she did in her short Christian life. May those who have only a form of godliness take warning from her experience, and never be satisfied till they know they have the abiding Christ within their hearts. Your sister in the love of God,

Jennie C. Rutty.

Died, near Hammond, La. in Tangipahoa Parish, Sister N. J. Bradley, wife of Bro. W. W. Bradley. She was the daughter of H. and Martha Franklin, and was born near Cuba, Ala. Jan. 9, 1858. She was converted to God at the early age of twelve years. She was united in marriage to W. W. Bradley on March 13, 1873. She united with the Baptists soon after she was married, and remained with them until 1886, when she had become fully convinced that she was in a Babylon of confusion and sin. About this time the glorious evening light began to dawn on the people of Ala. where she lived. She with her husband had looked and prayed for years for what they now began to realize, — the dawn of a religious reformation of the whole truth. They were fully prepared to receive and walk in every ray of light. She and her husband were soon gloriously sanctified. When the Lord called her young husbaned to preach the everlasting gospel in this blessed evening light, they moved out on a Bible line of holiness for the whole truth.

The Lord moved them to the state of Miss. near Meridian, where she began an active life with her husband in the great struggle for the truth against the spirit of sin and the powers of darkness, until at last her family increased in numbers and age so as to demand her attention at home. But while it seemed to be her lot to remain at home, her pure life seemed to be in the work with her husband, ever encouraging him to be faithful, to go forward, to be true to God, always praying for him. Through her upright walk and godly life and conversation, she won the respect, esteem and admiration of all who knew her.

Thus she has left all who knew her to mourn her loss, and those who knew her best loved her most. Early in Jan. 1894, she located with her husband at Ponchatoula, La., and remained in Tangipahoa Parish until her death, Aug 26, 1824. She died suddenly of heart trouble. She fell asleep in Jesus perfectly resigned to his will. Wires and mails were used to bring her husband in time, but he reached home too late to see the mortal body handed to the dust from whence it came. The object of his affections in this vale, was buried from his sight in the presence of at least two hundred and fifty or three hundred friends that came to pay the last tribute of respect to one they loved.

The funeral services will be conducted by Bro. A. L. Creal, first Sunday in Oct. 1894, at Zion Grove meeting house, during the assembly meeting. Your brother in Christ,

W. W. Bankston.

Three Hundred Scriptures on the Church.

FOR YOUNG CONVERTS AND OTHERS.

_____

THE New Testament was originally written in the Greek tongue. The word “church” in the Common or King James Version, is from the Greek word “ekklesia which denotes an assembly or congregation. It is translated “congregation” in the Emphatic Diaglott.

Rev. 1:11, properly translated reads thus: “What thou seest, write it in a book, and send it unto the seven congregations which are in Asia.” This rendering proves that but one congregation existed at each of the seven cities. There was but one at Corinth, 1 Cor. 1:2. But one at Jerusalem. Acts 2:44, and 4:31, 32.

The church is referred to in God’s word as “mount Zion,” “the new Jerusalem,” “the city of God,” “the house of God,” “the bride of Christ,” “the Lamb’s wife,” “the kingdom of God,” “the kingdom of heaven,” “the body of Christ,” “the church of God,” etc.

Let us search the scriptures in regard to the only church that ever existed, that we may be enabled to give you an answer to all who may ask the question: “To what church do you belong?”

MOUNT ZION.

But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; * * * for the law shall go forth of Zion. Micah 4:1, 2. The “mountains” here represent the big sects; the “hills,” little sects, also called “islands.” Where the “evening light” (Zech. 14:7) or holiness is preached, the “mountains” and “islands” are removed out of their places, Rev. 6:14; that is, the truth preached exposes their wickedness, so that all can see that sects are not of God, not his church.

In vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains. Jer. 3:23.

Turn and I will bring you to Zion. Verse 14.

God’s people have gone “from mountain to hill, and have forgotten their resting place.” Jer. 50:6. „

They wandered from sea to sea * * * to seek for the word of the Lord, but did not find it. Amos 8:12. (They only “prophesy deceits” in Babylon. Isa. 30:10.)

As the children of Israel were held captive in literal Babylon, so God’s people of to day have been held captive in “mystic Babylon” or sect confusion (Babylon means confusion). “Yea, we wept when we remembered Zion.” They could not sing the songs of Zion in a strange land. Psa. 137. But God is calling, “Come out of her, my people.” Rev. 18:4. And the ransomed of the Lord are returning and coming to Zion, with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads. Isa. 35:10. Ye are come unto Mt. Zion, and unto the city of the living God. Heb. 12:22. This and that man was born in Zion. Psa. 87:5.

To day many are “asking the way to Zion.” Jer. 50:5. For in mount Zion shall be deliverance. Joel 2:32. Deliver thyself, O Zion, that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon. Zech. 2:7. Mount Zion can not be removed. Psa. 125:1.

The time is come when the sinners in Zion are afraid, and fearfulness hath overtaken the hypocrite. Isa. 33:14. Because sinners cannot stand in the congregation of the righteous, nor the ungodly in the judgment. Psa. 1:5.

Zion is being “redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.” Isa. 1:27. Let the children of Zion be joyful in their King. Psa. 149:2.

All who are on mount Zion have their Father’s name written in their foreheads. Rev. 14:1. They have obtained joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing have flown away. See Isa. 35:10.

The distinguishing characteristic of Zion is found in Isa. 60:21.

Among the peculiarities of mount Zion are the “echoes.” Out here in the Rocky Mountain, if one shouts, “Praise the Lord!” the echo will respond with “praise the Lord!” In the “mountains” and “hills” of Babylon it is different. I went to a Baptist meeting once, to listen to a new preacher who, I had been told, was “a very spiritual man.” After meeting he stationed himself at the door to ask us to “come again.” When it came my turn he asked me, “How do you do?” I said, “Praise the Lord! I am saved,” and the college bred “echo” said, “Thank you, thank you.” This was in the First Baptist “church” of Denver, Colo. Sometimes the “echoes” say, “How are you?” “nice morning,” etc. in response to a hearty “Praise the Lord!” The “peculiarity” in point is this: when you shout “praise the Lord!” in mount Zion, the “echo” answers, “Amen!”

NEW JERUSALEM.

John saw her coming down from heaven. Rev. 21:2. Some deluded people think her coming is yet in the future; that it will be a literal city. Some affirm that she will be let down some where in the United States; but she was already in Palestine in Paul’s time, and some of the Hebrews were in her. Heb 12:22. And while the Adventists and others are waiting for a literal city, the saints are enjoying themselves in the spiritual or heavenly Jerusalem.

There is a fountain opened to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness. Zech. 13:1. And in her there is deliverance from sin. Joel 2:32.

The heavenly Jerusalem is free. Gal. 4:26. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. Jno. 8:36. The inhabitants of the heavenly Jerusalem are free, while they of the literal are in bondage (under the law). Gal. 4:25.

The Lord is washing away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and purging the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and the spirit of burning, and all that remain in Jerusalem are holy. See Isa. 4:3. 4. He shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Mat. 3:11. But who may abide the day of his coming? And who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire. Mal. 3:2. And I will bring the third part through the fire. Zech. 13:9.

Every pot in Jerusalem shall be holiness unto the Lord of hosts, * * * and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the Lord of hosts. Zech. 14:21.

THE CITY OF GOD.

This city descended from God out of heaven. Rev. 21:2. It is a spiritual city and composed of spiritual people, and is therefore holy. Rev. 21:10.

Her wall has twelve foundations. Rev. 21:14. Abraham looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. Heb. 11:10. Jesus Christ is the cornerstone. 1 Pet. 2:7, 8. Eph. 2:20.

It is a strong city, and her walls are called salvation. Isa. 26:1. Isa. 60:18. The wall is 12000 furlongs long, and 144 cubits thick. Rev. 21:16, 17. It is four square and has three gates on either side. Rev. 21:13. So that you may enter from any part of Satan’s kingdom that you happen to occupy, whether you are a moral sinner or a professing sinner, or a murderer, provided that you repent and leave all sins behind.

The gates are called “praise.” Isa. 60:18. All who enter go in praising God. See also Isa. 12:4.

This city is visible. Mat. 5:14. It is lighted with the glory of God and the Lamb. Rev. 21:23. The glory which thou gavest me I have given unto them. Jno. 17:22.

There is a river, the streams whereof make glad the inhabitants of this city. See Psa. 46:4. This river is peace. Isa. 66:12. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you. Jno. 14:27.

This is the city of the living God. Heb. 12:22. Sects are called “cities,” “fenced cities” (pales of the church). Hosea 8:14. Sectarian “union meetings” are described in Amos 4:8. Sectarian “cities” are fallen now, Rev. 16:19, and in them are found people possessed of devils. Rev. 18:2.

While sects hold “revivals” in winter, God’s people hold them in summer and winter. Zech. 14:8.

THE HOUSE OF GOD.

The house of God, which is the church of God. 1 Tim. 3:15. It is a spiritual house, 1 Pet. 2:5, whose house are we. Heb. 3:6. Ye are God’s building. 1 Cor. 3:9.

It is built of lively stones. 1 Pet. 2:5. We are of the household of God, and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; * * * in whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. Eph. 2:19, 20, 22. Other foundation can no man lay. 1 Cor. 3:11.

In my Father’s house are many mansions. Jno. 14:2. Jesus is gone to prepare a place for us, the mansions. See Jno. 14:3. Ye are the temple of the living God. 2 Cor. 6:16.

This house has ordinances. Ezek. 43:11. Baptism (immersion) Mat. 28:19. The Lord’s supper. Luke 22:19. 1 Cor. 11:23.

In it is also commanded washing the saints’ feet. John 13th chapter. The holy kiss. 1 Cor. 16:20. Lifting up holy hands. Psa. 134:2, and I Tim. 2:8. See 1 Jno. 2:4, 5.

God has filled this house with glory. Hag. 2:7.

If judgment shall begin at the house of God, where shall the ungodly (professors) and sinners appear? 1 Pet. 4:17.

Sectarians have forgotten their Maker, and build temples. Hos. 8:14. They shall build, but I will throw down. Mal. 1:4. Human founders are confounded. Jer. 51:17. Sectarians run every man unto his own house (my church). Hag. 1:9. But they are all dried up. Hag. 1:10, 11. Their walls are builded with untempered mortar. Ezek. 13:10, 14.

Poor sectarian, return to Father’s house where there is bread enough and to spare.

THE BRIDE OF CHRIST.

John saw her coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. Rev. 21:2. The Corinthians were a part of her. 2 Cor. 11:2. He that hath the bride is the Bridegroom. Jno. 3:29. Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning on her beloved? Songs of Solomon 8:5.

The woman (church) went into the wilderness about A. D. 270, and remained there 1260 years. Rev. 12:6. This wilderness was Roman Catholicism. Then she went into another wilderness where she remained for a time, times, and half a time (one hundred, two hundred, and half a hundred years). Rev. 12:14. This wilderness was Protestantism. 1530 to 1880 A. D.

But now God’s people are returning from all the countries (sects) where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day (Protestantism). Ezek. 34:12. The bride of Christ is made up of virgins, such as have not defiled themselves with women (sects). Rev. 14:4. Those who return from the sects almost invariably have to change garments. Dear sinner, the Spirit and the bride say, Come. Rev. 22:17.

The wise virgins have oil in their lamps and are prepared for the coming of the Bridegroom, the foolish virgins are formal professors. Mat. 25:4.

His wife hath made herself ready. Rev. 19:7. My dove, my undefiled is one; she is the only one of her mother. Songs 6:9. God saith that the voice (word of God) of the Bridegroom (Jesus) and of the bride (the church) shall be heard no more at all in Babylon. Rev. 18:23. Because God is calling his people out. Rev. 18:4. Babylon is not a virgin. Rev. 17:5. Rev. 18:3, 9.

THE LAMB’S WIFE.

Thou shaft no more be termed forsaken, neither shall thy land be termed desolate; but thou shalt be called Hephzibah (my delight is in her), and thy land Beulah (married), for the Lord delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married. Isa. 62:4. The bride the Lamb’s wife. Rev. 21:10. Read also Eph. 5:25-32.

The marriage of the Lamb is come and his wife hath made herself ready. Rev. 19:7. Blessed are they which are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb. Rev. 19:9. That ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead. Rom. 7:4. The desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband. Gal. 4:27.

Sectarians say, “We will eat our own bread — “fine flour,” Rev. 18:13, and wear our own apparel (strange apparel. Zeph. 1:8.). only let us be called by thy name. Isa. 4:1. They would like to be recognized by the Savior and be called “Christians,” yet live in their sins. Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 2 Tim. 2:19. Jesus says, “I am the bread of life.” “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life. Jno. 6:63. The Lamb’s wife is arrayed in fine linen which is the righteousness of the saints. Rev. 19:8. Christ is not a polygamist; he has but one wife.

THE KINGDOM.

Daniel prophesied that in the days of the Roman empire the God of heaven should set up a kingdom that should stand forever. Dan. 2:44. An everlasting kingdom. Dan. 4:3.

John the Baptist preached, “Repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Mat. 3:2. Jesus said, “Except ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Mat. 18:3. Except a man be born of the water (word) and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Jno. 3:5.

It is Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Luke 12:32. It cometh not with observation. Luke 17:20. “My kingdom is not of this world.” John 18:36. The kingdom of God is righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Rom. 14:17. The reason that the apostles were taught to pray “thy kingdom come,” was because the Holy Spirit was not yet given. See Jno. 7:39.

The saints fully possessed the kingdom after they received the Holy Spirit. They are translated into it. Col. 1:13. They received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. Acts 2:1-4. Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you. 1 Cor. 6:19. The kingdom is in the midst of you. (Emphatic Diaglott) Luke 17:20.

The kingdom of God was to come with power. Mark 9:1. Ye shall receive power after the Holy Spirit is come upon you! Acts 1:8. For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power. 1 Cor. 4:20.

The violent take, it by force. Mat 11:12. Have you taken it yet? Strive to enter in. Luke 13:24. Repent and be baptized, every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38.

The apostles did not need to pray “thy kingdom come” in their own behalf, after the day of Pentecost, because they possessed the kingdom. The Holy Spirit is the Sanctifier. Rom. 15:16. Having the Sanctifier is to possess the kingdom.

The unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Cor. 6:9. To preach the kingdom is to preach holiness. God is now gathering out of his kingdom all that do iniquity. Mat. 13:41. And the righteous shine as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Verse 43. The harvest time is here. See verse 39. Millions will soon have to say, “The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and I am not saved.” Jer. 8:20. Behold, now is the day of salvation. 2 Cor. 6:2.

BEING SANCTIFIED.

_____

IT is one thing to profess sanctification, and quite another thing to have the real experience. Not all who leap and shout and say, Praise the Lord, etc., and make a loud profession, are by any means in possession of a sanctified experience. It is the will of God that his children reach this blessed experience, (2 Thess. 4:3; 5:18-23.) but, oh how many fail to meet the conditions of the Word on that point, and “claim it by faith,” then go on professing to have it, and are “holding on by faith,” only to conclude, in a short time that there is no such thing as heart purity, or else hold it at a very low standard, measuring it by their own experience. There are men and women going forth to day with just such an experience, who have never tasted the “fruit of the land” of spiritual Canaan, and are trying to preach holiness. No wonder there is so much shoddy holiness throughout the land, when the preachers have their heads, instead of their hearts sanctified, and can present it only from a theoretical standpoint, hoping it will sometime reach the heart.

Not long ago, at what was considered a holiness meeting, one of the most noted preachers taught that a person must be converted, and afterwards wholly sanctified by receiving the Holy Spirit as an abiding Comforter, which was all right, but without informing the people how to go about it to get the experience, or upon what conditions it was to be obtained, he said, “Now all in the audience who desire to have the Holy Spirit as an abiding Comforter, raise your hands.” A number of hands went up, and the preacher said, “Let us pray, and while we pray you receive the Holy Spirit.” A short prayer was offered, and all arose claiming the promise, “Whatsoever ye ask when ye pray, believe that ye do receive, and ye shall have.” God never promised to give on any such terms. The scripture quoted was all right, but the conditions had not been met, and God’s promises are for us only upon conditions that we meet the requirements of his Word. In the above case there was no consecration made, no covenant entered into, no crucifixion of the “old man,” no disposition to give up worldly conformity or lay aside hindering weights, nor willingness to cease bearing the fruits of the carnal mind, as was very soon tested after the close of the meeting. The very same persons still contended for their jewelry, worldly fashions of dress, worldly religious creeds, etc., and we would be safe in saying that not one of them, after the prayer, had a particle more of the Holy Spirit than they had before.

The word of God teaches that the willing and obedient shall eat of the good of the land. When Paul taught that the one that was “dead in trespasses and sins” was to be made alive through the birth of the Spirit, then after having been made alive, to offer himself a living sacrifice, and. “be not conformed to this world” (Rom. 12 1, 2.), he meant just what he said. He did not mean that they could obtain the desired experience and still follow after the world in their fashions of stylish dress, picnics, socials, jesting, joking and foolish talking, quarreling, scolding, envying, covetousness and such like. There was to be a change, and in order to make the change, certain conditions had to be met. When the heart is cleansed by the sanctifying power of the Holy Ghost, (Rom. 15:16.) making the soul pure and clean, the outward appearance will show forth fruits of the same.

A person may just as well try to raise a crop of corn without tilling the soil as to try to get wholly sanctified to God without meeting the proper conditions of the Word. There are two parts to this covenant. It takes more than one party to make and fulfill it. God promises to do “so and so,” if we will do “so and so.” And he is under no obligations only as far as we do our part, and just as soon as our part is completed then his part of the covenant stands already fulfilled. All must be laid on the altar Christ Jesus. A man may give up unreservedly to the Lord all but one thing and give that up in his own way, and thereby miss the great treasure of having the abiding Comforter. It may be his farm that he wishes to have his own way about, or his goods, family, wife, or something else. But God requires an unconditional surrender. He does not always require a person to leave his farm or earthly goods, but requires a consecration that will cover the same, providing such a demand should be made of him. Many a person has plead with God for a sanctified experience and desired to be allowed to remain in the sect to which he belonged, not willing to break loose, claiming not to be sectarian, and yet not willing to be “complete in him.”

Here is a fact which by observance you will readily notice, that since the time has come that prophecy is being fulfilled wherein God is calling his children out of the Babel confusion of religious creeds, (Rev. 18:14) that very few people can get sanctified wholly while in the sect or religious creed to which they belong, and should they be so fortunate as to get the experience while in there, they will soon get the light on the true church, the body of Christ, and come out, or will very soon lose their experience.

Many lose their experience because they do not let their light shine. A young man once came to me who had recently completed a two years course in the Christian Alliance holiness school at New York and stated that shortly before going there he received light on sectism and also obtained the blessing of entire sanctification, but he had not felt satisfied with his experience since shortly after entering the school, and was unable to account for it, although he did not cease to profess sanctification. A little investigation by the Spirit of the Lord revealed the fact that shortly after entering school he began to let his light shine concerning the true church, but the instructors of the school being mixed up in sectism themselves, opposed him and tried to explain it away, but not to the satisfaction of the young brother who, in order to avoid opposition, concluded to say nothing about it, but go ahead and learn whatever else was to be learned; and from that time forth he had a wavering and unsatisfactory experience. If you desire to be sanctified, first get justified, bear fruits of righteousness, meet the conditions of a complete consecration and you can have the experience. If you desire to keep the experience you must keep consecrated, and let your light shine.

==========

Dekalb. Miss.

Dear Saints of God: It is to the glory of God I write my testimony. I never heard the pure gospel preached until about one year ago. I have been a member of the M. E. sect twenty years, but praise God, he has freed me from all sins. The Lord has sanctified me; he has also delivered me from the use of tobacco, to which I had been a slave for twenty-two years, praise his holy name! There were seven of us burned with Christ in baptism, and more to follow soon. We have much opposition here. Pray that the Lord may send us more workers here in this part of his vineyard, and, pray or me, that I may ever be found doing the whole will of God. I never knew what it was to enjoy pure religion until I heard the saints of God preach the word in all its purity, as the sect never taught us that we could live above sin. Oh, praise the Lord for a salvation that we know when we have it. I am in the one body, which is Christ. Love to all the saints,

Bettie Waddell.

Coonville, Miss.

Dear Saints of God: I feel that it will be to the glory of God to tell how he so wonderfully saves me and keeps me from all sin by his mighly power. Praise his holy name forever! In the year 1878 the Lord pardoned my sins, and for a time I was quite happy in his love. I thought it was my duty to join some church and be baptized, and also thought that it was the duty of God’s children to follow the example of the Saviour in washing the saint’s feet. So united with the Primitive Baptists, as they were the only denomination I knew of that practiced immersion and feet washing I thought I was doing my duty, but God has shown me of late that his children are not required to join anything, but are already in his church when they are born of his Spirit. So I am free from sectism at last, for which I thank God. I never knew what it was to enjoy religion until God led me into the light of full salvation. On the nth day of Aug. I made a complete consecration, and by faith, received the blessing of sanctification, and can now say, truly, that the precious blood of Jesus cleanses me from all sin, and I have such a calm, sweet peace in my soul, a peace that passeth understanding. I know he will keep me sweetly saved as long as I fully trust him. I want all the dear saints to pray for me that I may continue to walk in all the light God gives me. Your sister saved, sanctified and kept,

Mary A. Nunnery.
