Street Invitation.

_____

Kind friends, we are out on the streets here to night.
To tell you of Jesus and kindly invite
All those who are burdened with sin and oppressed,
To come to the Savior and find sweet rest.

CHORUS.
Oh why don’t you come, accept of the home,
That Christ has prepared and is waiting for thee;
Your trouble shall cease, and you shall have peace,
Oh come and from sin be free.

You often have heard of the salvation plan
Christ suffered and died to redeem fallen man;
Although you’re a slave under Satan’s control,
The price has been paid to redeem your soul.

It may be, you’re sad and your friends seem but few,
But Jesus your friend is still calling for you,
In him, you’ve a friend that’s a true friend indeed,
And you’ll find it so, in each time of need.

Repent, then believe and the Lord will forgive,
Oh come to this fountain, oh drink ye and live,
Your sorrows and sadness and dark gloomy ways
Will change into joy and everlasting praise.

Then come friends to Jesus before ’tis too late,
For if you reject him, hell sure is your fate
Oh miserable backslider, hear Father’s call,
Whosoever will may come, one and all.

E. G. Master.

__________

WISDOM IS JUSTIFIED OF HER CHILDREN.

_____

THE wisdom spoken of here, by our Savior in Matt. 11:19, is the wisdom of God. He has sent John the Baptist to the people saying, “Repent.” Many of them rejected this command of God, and sought to jusitfy themselves by saying, “he hath a devil.” When Jesus came eating and drinking, but preaching the same command, “Repent,” they likewise rejected him and also sought to justify themselves by saying, “Behold a man, gluttonous and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners.” The fact is, they were then as the world is to day; opposed to the counsel of God, because be demands repentance. Could they have had a religion that promised salvation to them without paying the salvation price; the messengers of God would have been, all right in their estimation. As then, so now; the wisdom of the world knew not God, and did not want to know him. The carnal mind being enmity against God, will not receive the things of God. Well might Jesus compare that ungodly generation, with children sitting in the market places, finding fault with their fellows, saying, We have piped unto you and ye have not danced. With what exact similarity and increased proportion, this principle is manifested to day. The world wants a gospel that suits the carnal mind. When the gospel of repentance is preached, it is rejected and the cry against those whom God has sent, is, “Away with him.”

The restless throng of humanity is rushing hither and thither, seeking something to gratify the carnal mind, which ever and continually remains unsatisfied with God, and the messengers of the Gospel. The great accusation against us is, we will not dance to their theological tunes and doctrines, hence we are rejected. Great salaries are paid to hireling preachers, who will preach to suit the people. What a disgusting spectacle the majority of the pulpits of the land present to us to day. Men who profess to be the servants of God and the messengers of the gospel, standing up before ungodly congregations, dancing to their tunes of superstition and unbelief. This is a true representation of worldly wisdom, but in the sight of God, it is abomination, being earthly, sensual, devilish. How ..y this prophetic language is fulfilled: “For the time will come when ..b will not endure sound doctrine, … After their own lusts shall they … to themselves teachers, having ..g ears, and they shall turn away de..ars from the truth and shall be e..d unto fables.”

..ice God has made foolish the ..om of this world, and the world by its wisdom knows not God, the wisdom of God will never be justified by the children of this world. The offence of the cross will ever be a stumbling block and foolishness to this world, but to the children of wisdom it is the power and wisdom of God. In this manner, no flesh glories in the wisdom of the world, but he that glorieth, glories in the wisdom of God. Thank God who hath made us the children of his wisdom. We have repented and met the conditions of the gospel and thereby are fools to the wisdom of the world, but wise unto God, and can truly comprehend the scripture, “Wisdom is justified of her children.”

DO THE MINISTERS OF GOD SEE EYE TO EYE?

_____

THY watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing; for they shall see eye to eye, when the Lord shall bring again Zion. — Isa. 52:8.

The expression, “see eye to eye,” evidently signifies that they are of “one heart and one way.” Jer. 32:39. In “one body, one spirit and one faith.” Eph. 4. Perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.” 1 Cor. 1:10. “Stand fast in one Spirit, with one mind, striving together for the faith of the gospel.” Phil. 1:27. “Like-minded one toward another, according to Christ Jesus.” Rom. 15:5. They all agree in faith and doctrine, being in the one “faith of the gospel.” They are of the same mind, and that is not what they have compiled in a creed and subscribed to, but, that mind, faith, doctrine and practice is “according to Christ Jesus.” This harmony of sentiment and teaching is attained, and only can be attained by having our former education and our own wisdom destroyed and purged out; and be led of the Spirit of God into all truth, according to the promise of Christ. Jno. 16:13. All being thus “taught of God,” and receiving the Word from his mouth, interpreted by his Spirit, there must be harmony; for “God is not the author of confusion.” And, upon the other hand, where there appears the slightest discrepancy or conflict in the teaching, it is because some person has not been brought perfectly under the light of the Word by the Holy Spirit; or has been carrying something along he had received and taught before wholly sanctified. But on the authority of God’s word we affirm that it is the privilege and solemn duty of all God’s messengers to understand and teach the word of God in perfect harmony. This does not however, imply that they all have the same gifts or abilities, nor yet that they have all attained unto the same degree of knowledge in sacred truth: but “whereunto we have attained we walk by the same rule,” and what we have not learned of the Lord we do not presume to teach. Hence there is harmony in all that is taught, so long as each teacher is confined within that measure of truth received by the Holy Spirit.

In this article it becomes our duty to notice a very few points in which there has not been perfect agreement manifest among the watchmen who have returned to Zion.

One scripture which some have taken it upon themselves to explain away, through unnecessary fears that it would give sanction to the doctrine of hell redemption and purgatory, is 1 Pet. 3:18-20, which reads as follows:

“For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: by which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; which sometimes were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.”

About a year ago an article appeared in the GOSPEL TRUMPET, while we were in California, in which the brother, if we remember correctly, took the position that the spirits in prison to whom Christ preached, were sinners here on earth. When we read the same we could not approve of it. We have long ago learned to regard the word of God as all right, and there is nothing in it that we need be afraid of, or fry to get out of the way. Let us then look at the above scripture. In verse 18 the flesh and the Spirit of Christ are distinctly spoken of. He was “put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit.” And “by — according to the Greek in — his Spirit spoken of in contradiction to his flesh, “he went and preached unto the spirits in prison.” Notice the expression, “He went and preached,” etc. Had there been here an allusion to Christ preaching to sinners in this world, the proper form of expression would have been, “he came and preached.” But as the language in John 13 — “went to God,” after his resurrection, implies that he departed from this world into another realm; so the expression, “he went and preached to the spirits in prison,” would naturally imply that he then went away from this world to deliver that message. As the brother showed, it is true, that sinners in this life are represented as being in the dark prison of guilt and despair, and to them Christ does open a door of escape. All of which would, indeed, offer a solution of the words of Peter, were it not for several specifications that cannot, by any fair means, be so interpreted. First, as we have seen, the statement that Christ “went,” stands against that theory. Second, we are not left to conjecture that the spirits to whom Christ preached were sinners that dwelt on earth, in the time of Christ’s incarnation, or since that time. For, indeed, we can see no evading the fact that they were spirits of men who lived before the flood. They were “spirits in prison: which sometime were disobedient, when once the long- suffering of God waited in the days of Noah.” Christ, “being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit: in which he also went and preached unto the spirits in prison; which were once disobedient, when the longsuffering of God was waiting in the days of Noah.” Dean Alford’s translation: “Spirits in prison which aforetime were disobedient, when the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah.” New Version: Christ, “having been put to death, indeed, in flesh, but made alive in Spirit; in which, going even to the spirits in prison, he made proclamations; spirits unyielding, at one time when God’s longsuffering was holding forth a welcome in the days of Noah.” Rotherham. The direct from the Greek in the Emphatic reads, “Being made alive but in, spirit: by [Greek in] which also to those in prison spirits having gone he published.” And in that translation like in all the rest, the spirits to whom he preached are clearly defined as those, “who formerly disobeyed, when the patience of God was waiting in the days of Noah.”

Third, the idea is conveyed that Christ preached to them in a disembodied state after he was put to death in the flesh.

This very strange events is spoken of again in the next chapter, 1 Pet. 4:6, in these words: For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.” In the article referred to this passage was passed by in silence. But when taken in connection with the former, it seems to me utterly impossible to interpret them in any other but their plain obvious narration. The first text affirms that Christ, in a spirit condition, went and preached to spirits in prison who had disobeyed God before the flood. In the second statement, the fact that those spirits were disembodied souls, they are declared to have been men “that are dead.” And death cannot, by any fair interpretation, be explained as spiritual, for it is placed in direct antithesis to “men in the flesh:’’ which shows clearly that they were men who had died the natural death and were no longer in the flesh. Had the apostle Peter intended to speak of the gospel being preached to men who are dead in sins, he would have said, “for this cause is the gospel preached.” For that work was then and still is in progress. But notice the expression, “For this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead.” That publication was a past event, and not the evangelization that is going on in this world. Moreover, notice the word “also.” “The gospel was preached ALSO to them that are dead.” Showing that it was something beyond and additional to the preaching of the Word to the living. The object of that proclamation to the spirits of the anti-diluvians is clearly stated; “that they might be judged according to men in the flesh.” Read also verses 5 and 6 in connection. “Who is ready to judge the quick and the dead. For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead.”

When we remember that those spirits had in their day, neither the law nor the gospel, there is nothing strange or unreasonable in the idea, that while Christ’s spirit was in the realm of disembodied spirits, he preached to them the gospel that they be without excuse in the day of judgment. Whether any accepted or not, we are not told, nor does it concern us. In fact this whole matter is foreign to us, and therefore would not be an exception to unity in the faith once delivered to the saints if all did not understand it alike. But if we accept the plain narrative of revelation there need be no difference even on this matter.

We need not fear that the plain interpretation of these scriptures gives any countenance to the doctrine of hell redemption to men who die in sin in this dispensation; for the whole teaching of Christ and the apostles positively declare the contrary. And even the heathen who died without hearing the law or the gospel will be judged without law. Rom. 2:14-16. Therefore the assertion that the gospel was also preached to the dead, is wisely followed by this announcement: “But the end of all things is at hand; be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.” 1 Pet. 4:7. The last hope of a lost world is now published through Christ Jesus, and next will follow the end of all things here, the destiny of all men. Indeed it looks as though these words followed the disclosure of verse 6 expressly to preclude the idea that a similar chance may be extended to men who live in this dispensation.

By the help of the Lord we will follow this article with others that are needed for the complete unification of all who walk in the evening light, and we sincerely ask the prayers of all the dear saints that only the wisdom that comes from above may guide our thoughts and pen, and the love of God mould our words. Amen.

__________

“WILL A MAN ROB GOD?”

_____

“YET ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. * * * Bring all the tithes into the store house, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”

The reason why some that profess to be children of God and are lean in their soul, do not receive the rich blessings of God is because they have not brought all they have into the store house. When we give ourselves to God and say that we give all we have to him, remember he holds us to our word. “When thou shalt vow a vow unto the Lord thy God, thou shalt not slack to pay it, for the Lord thy God will surely require it of thee, and it would be sin in thee.” Deut. 24:21. That which is gone out from thy lips thou shalt keep and perform, even a freewill offering according as thou has vowed unto the Lord thy God which thou hast promised with thy mouth. — Deut. 24:23.

I once heard a man pray, and he told the Lord he was willing to do anything, if He would show him what he could do, and that same day the Lord required him to deny himself a little to help a sister in Christ, and he said, No. How many there are in that same way to day, who claim they are all given up to God, ready to do his will in all things, still at the same time are robbing him. “Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have. For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.” — 2 Cor. 8:11:12.

Now the dear Lord does not ask any one to give what they do not have to give, but give as the Lord has prospered you. I fear there are a good many whom God has prospered in the things of this world who are withholding from him. “Whoso hath this world’s goods and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him how dwelleth the love of God in him?” 1 John 3:19.

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying. Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. — Matt. 25:41-45.

Dear ones, it means much to do the whole will of God. O may God awaken his children to their duty and help them to so live and obey him that it may be said of them at last, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant, thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.”

Pray with us dear ones, and if the Lord leads, fast and pray that the work may be done, all for the glory of God. QUESTION.

_____

Please explain Luke 22:32. Your brother, saved to the uttermost from all isms and schisms,

A. W. B.

ANSWER.

By reading the connection, Luke 22:31-34, you will find that this conversion of Peter, referred to in the above verse, was made necessary by his fall and denial of Christ. The tempter came like a Hood, working on his fears, and he yielded to the same. Afterwards he went out and repented, and wept bitterly. Luke. 22:62. And no doubt Jesus forgave him. Hence he could afterwards appeal to Christ three times over, saying, “Lord, thou knowest that I love thee.” John 21:15-17. So he had turned back to the Lord after having denied him. And the word convert means to turn.

A REQUEST FOR PRAYER.

Dayton, O.. Dec. 5, 1893.

Dear Bro. Byrum: I feel led of the Lord to make known to all of the true church of Christ, to have them all pray for the entire healing of my afflicted body, on Dec. 27, 1893, at seven o’clock in the evening. I have the faith to be made every whit whole at that hour of prayer offered in faith, doubting nothing. I will be forty-eight years of age on that day, and being born sick and afflicted, I have never known what ease from pain and sickness was, only as God relieves me for a short time. My hard spells are very severe, but my faith and true confidence in God and his holy promises is the very thing that has kept me from dying. My God is a covenant-keeping God and cannot go back on his word; and I know this, therefore my faith is put to the most severe test. O what numberless times have I been brought to death’s door, but each time my Deliverer did fulfill his promises in even me, for I am eating that bread of which if a man eat he shall never die. O hallelujah for the blessed privilege to eat of the hidden manna!

I had another hard spell of asmatic croup on the day and night before Thanksgiving. Oh how I longed to be anointed by some of the holy ministers of God, but it being too great a distance to send, so I just told Jesus all about it in thought, for I can not speak until I get over it. For twenty years I had to have a physician to help Jesus to deliver me. But ever since last spring when I read the book on divine healing and a few GOSPEL TRUMPETS, why my spiritual eyesight got larger. From that time on I have taken Christ for my physician; he brings me through without medicine. I have a complication of diseases that no earthly doctors ever could cure. But God will take them all out of my body, because he said so. O glory to God for a living faith! My soul is exceedingly joyful in God in the midst of all this suffering, for I always bear it tor Christ’s sake without murmuring.

On the 24th of March, 1871, in the night, God wonderfully came into my heart. Oh what a wonderful conversion! it was instantaneous, and I then offered my body a living sacrifice and he sanctified me through and through, and then he healed my body from sickness, the same time. I saw what my salvation depended on then. Oh glory! what a heaven I had when God set up his kingdom in my heart. But finally I did allow the devil to come between me and Christ in an unguarded moment. Then sickness came back again, for I was not taught these things by any man, but by the Holy Ghost; he is all the teacher I ever had; and I can get no better one. I am kept and taught by the Holy Ghost Teacher altogether. Sect preachers do not love me, for I will not bow my knee to Baal or his image. My name is written in the Lamb’s book of life, and I have no right to have it written elsewhere, so I stand alone with God. He fills my soul so full of glory that I can truly say that the well spring of everlasting life never goes dry in my soul.

I have never seen any of the saints or heard them preach. I have longed to see and hear some of them, for all God’s holy children are of one soul, and in the one body, Christ in us and we in God, being one in him, and all being taught of God. How sweet to have Jesus to dwell in our hearts, there is nothing like it, praise his holy name! I do not keep myself, but am kept of him. I dearly love the GOSPEL TRUMPET. Your humble sister before God,

Carrie McNeal.

To the Gospel Trumpet: In the providence of God, I am at this place and have opened up the battle in the name of the living God. We are expecting victory in and through our Lord Jesus Christ. If any of God’s holy ones, filled with the flaming fire of the Holy Ghost feel led to come to the help of the Lord, we would say, Come, and your expenses will be paid; if necessary, traveling expense will be sent you. After we get through here we may go if the Lord leads to Topeka, as that place is ripe for the glorious gospel of Christ. May the dear Lord lead it all to his glory, in the saving of souls. Amen.

Bro. Michels left me on last Friday for the Children’s Home, and I am left alone so far as earthly help is concerned. But God has enabled us to keep our eye on Matt. 28:20. Now may peace and love and harmony, with the faith once delivered to the saints, abide with all God’s children everywhere. My testimony is that I am saved, that I have the Blesser, and am abounding in his love. My whole soul in His work, sanctified and kept. Amen. Saints of God, don’t forget the CHILDREN’S HOME, IT NEEDS YOUR HELP. The Lord bless and lead you. Amen.

Dear Saints: We are glad to report victory for king Jesus this morning, as it is the first time I have written about the work here. We have meeting four times a week from house to house. There have been three saved recently, two of whom were saved out of Roman Catholicism, which has caused Babylon much pain, but bless God for a few that will hear the call. “Come out of her my people.” On Thanksgiving day we had meeting all day which was a feast to our souls. At the close of the service, a woman expressed her thankfulness to God, that she had come to meeting. At nearly every coming together there are some who ask for prayers. As there are but few in number here we would like for all of God’s people to pray for us and the work, that people may be saved on the terms of the gospel. Your brother saved and sanctified,

To all the Family of the Living God everywhere, Greeting: We are glad to report that we are having glorious meetings in this place, in the name of Jesus, and a few are deeply interested in the truth. There have been two consecrations in the meetings, and two dear souls have been saved in their homes, by the sisters visiting and praying with them. The dear Lord is wonderfully blessing our souls in doing his will, and letting us down in the deep things of God, for which we give God all the glory. We are now in company with dear Brother and Sister Smith and Brother and Sister Billig, and we are very thankful to God for permitting us to be together in the work, as God is blessing our labors together, and is teaching us many precious lessons.

We expect to go from here to McClellan’s Corners, Pa. the Lord willing, and probably from there back to the Floating Bethel, where the work of God seems to be opening up very favorable. The Floating Bethel is not complete yet; it will probably take fifty dollars to finish it. The $100 that I borrowed for the same, is now all paid, but twenty-five dollars. We feel encouraged with the prospect of the work on the boat. There is no doubt if the boat is conducted in God’s order, which it must be, it will be an instrument in God’s hands, in reaching many perishing souls. I would just say to all the dear saints and the holy brethren, take courage and help finish the boat, and fully prepare it for God’s work and God will bless you in so doing. I visited the boat a few days ago and found the Bethel family all trusting and talking to God for all their needs, which the Lord is supplying. But the work is somewhat hindered on account of not having means to finish the boat and make it comfortable for winter quarters. We are sweetly saved and wholly sanctified, and rejoicing in the faith once delivered to the saints. Praise the Lord! We ask all God’s people to pray for us that we may keep humble and filled with the spirit and power of …. From your saved brother a … worker in the body of Christ,

The Household of God: We ..ell and full of glory. The Lord’s work is prospering. Our hall is located in a desirable part of the city, 208 E. Second St. The meetings are well attended. Souls are being saved almost daily at present. God is wonderfully establishing his people, and manifesting his power and presence with signs following. Our faith is expanding more and more as we pass through one lesson after another. Oh glory to his name! He is so good to us. When the battle cloud lowers upon the field and Satan’s artillery thunders upon us from every direction, we still hear the voice of our Captain loud and clear. “Follow me.” We advance, keeping in perfect obedience to his commands and directions until the cloud lifts again, and behold, the slain of the Lord lie around us, and are many. Hallelujah! This makes us eager for the fight continually, because every battle is a glorious victory. We are learning more and more how to trust God, and let him use us for his own glory. The only place, of safety in this war is right in the front ranks. Oh how glad we are that we have found this out! Oh! dear saints, keep in the front. This is where our Commander is always found, and here alone do we find continual victory. Hallelujah! Some poor cowards are standing off to see how the battle turns before they dare to take part in it, but this will never do. Such are sure to be captured by Satan. Brethren, there is no neutral ground. As sure as you are doing nothing to push the battle on, you are wounded by the devil. For this reason many poor cripples are spending their time, being nursed in God’s hospital and are a continual dead weight to the cause. You will surely be compelled to move out into the actual activity for God, or else lose your soul. Which will it be? Make your choice speedily.

May the everlasting glory rest continually upon the faithful remnant. Keep praying for your unworthy brother and sister sanctified wholly, and set for the defense of the gospel.

Dear Saints: I testified at the Grand Junction camp meeting to having been called of God to preach the gospel, also that I was called to go to a foreign land. This was several months ago and I am still at home. I am aware that the Lord called his disciples and sent them afterward. I am only awaiting the “send.” I am consecrated to go whenever it comes. I am perfectly free from the cares of this world, and know that the Lord will open the way and provide the means when his time comes. I made up my mind after I was called, to save my money to go on, and at one time wife and I had about $250, but it seems impossible for us to hoard money while it is so much needed: many of God’s people are destitute on account of lack of faith, and millions are going down to death for want of the gospel, papers, tracts, etc. But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? — 1 Jno. 3:17.

If dear brethren, we know that a brother or sister be naked and destitute of daily food (and Jesus said: “The poor ye have always with you,”) and say unto him, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled, notwithstanding ye give him not those things which are needful for the body, what doth it profit? If we are in this condition, if we can behold one of God’s little ones in destitute circumstances, with indifference, while we have an idle dollar in our possession it is high time to examine our consecration. Yea, I fear that such a one would discover himself to be in a worse condition than his poof brother or sister — naked and destitute — void of salvation. Dear brethren, I am better satisfied to day without a dollar than any one dare be who withholds from God’s work or his faithful poor. Now I am not begging in an underhanded way, God’s people are not beggars; they are kings and priests. Praise the Lord! Be careful for nothing: but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God,” not unto man. I started out to report the Lord’s work at Denver. Bro. T. A. Phillips and wife and Bro. Ed Masters and wife have been here ever since the camp meeting, and “have not shunned to declare all the counsel of God.” The result is that precious souls are being born into the kingdom; Baptists, Methodists and Presbyterians are being saved, and the church is aggressive and victorious; for the Lord of hosts is fighting the battle and his church is bound to win.

Dear saints; it is necessary that the church shine forth as the sun, in order that souls be saved. The devil succeeded in casting a stupor, or stolid indifference over his people at this place, for a time. The result was that God could not work, but we all got together, exposed the devil and his trick, which resulted in the complete routing of Satan and victory in the Lord’s favor. One word more to those who are called to preach. If you have a longing to go to distant parts, or to foreign lands to work for God, and the way is not open, pitch the battle where you are and leave the rest with God.

Dear Ones in the Lord: I am praising the Lord for full salvation, and the wonderful keeping power of God. The Lord is very precious to my soul. About three weeks ago, the Lord sent me to Battle Creek, to help to care for dear Sister Emma Miller, who was very sick and not expected to live. Her sister, Sister Courtney, who had been taking care of her, was summoned very suddenly to the death bed of her only child, “Little Belle.” After the funeral she returned to Battle Creek. The Lord had been stirring our heart from the moment we arrived at her house, and looked upon her wasted form, to see her again restored to health. After Sister Courtney’s return, we took the matter to the Lord and appointed a day of fasting and prayer; we had a very precious time with the Lord all day; we felt his wonderful presence and his voice continually assuring us it would be done. Well the Lord was as good as his word and has done the work. This was on Thursday and on Friday Sister Courtney returned to her home at Bay View.

On Saturday I went to Johnstown, and met with the dear saints at that place. I had the privilege of delivering the word in the morning to the church, and in the evening to a well filled house, of which a greater part were sinners. On Wednesday Bro. Swanson took his team and a load of saints to Tekonsha. It rained during the whole journey, but the Lord suffered no harm to come upon us. Blessed be his name! And while the rain was pouring down on the outside, the Lord was raining showers of blessings in our souls. On Thanks giving morning there was quite a large assembly of saints gathered in the new meeting house, which the saints have just finished (in the neighborhood of Bro. Charley Eldridge’s, it is a very nice little house and well finished.) While some others were feasting on turkey and other nick- nacks, we had a glorious feast of fat things of a divine nature. We enjoyed the precious privilege of dealing out the word to others and at the same time feasting upon it ourself. We had a glorious meeting, several at the altar and the Lord witnessed to the consecrations. After meeting we had an intermission for dinner, after which the saints brought together such things as the Lord had prospered them with and packed a barrel to send to the Children’s Home on the camp ground, and realized the fulfilling of the words of the Lord, which says, It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

The meeting continued over Sunday with good results; several consecrations. Bro. Will Merrit and wife were present, whom the Lord also used in delivering the word and in singing. Also Bro. Wm. Randolph came on Sunday and in the evening the Lord used him in breaking the bread of life to the people. On Monday we returned to Battle Creek, and found Sister Emma still on the gain and very much improved, so she walks out four or five times a day for air and exercise, and with a good appetite for her meals. Continue to pray for her that her faith fail not and that the Lord may glorify himself in her. Your sister in Jesus, under the blood and kept by his power,

Allie R. Fisher.

13 Joliffe St., Liverpool, England, Nov. 25. 1893.

To the Dear Saints Scattered Abroad,: Greeting: We left New York City, Nov. 4,on the S. S. Umbria of the Cunard line. It began to storm soon after leaving the city and stormed nearly all the way to Ireland. We had so much running to do in New York, and so short a time to do it, that I was completely exhausted when on the ship; so with that and the motion of the vessel, I was prostrated near all the trip; also I saw the devil was mad, because he knew there was going to be a great work done in England. On Wednesday, after it had been storming most of the way, they came around screwing down the port holes, and the sailors said, “We are going to have a gale to night.” Soon the vessel was rolling, pitching and tossing. The others were sick in other rooms except my dear wife, who came into my room and staid with me. The water would frequently pour into the cabin and run through the rooms so they had to carry the water out and take up the carpets; which made us examine our consecration, and found it complete. Hallelujah! After the storm had raged awhile, I spoke to wife about the promise; we agreed on it and asked our heavenly Father to still the tempest. Soon a toss of the ship and a dash of water into the ship; I would say. It shall be done; we demanded it on the promise. In about an hour one of the passengers said, It is calming down. Glory to Jesus! It was about the calmest night we had.

We were eight days on the ship, arriving at Liverpool Sunday the 12th, about two P. M., and found Brother and Sister Rupert and Brother and Sister Croasdell waiting for us. It was very late when we got through the custom house; which was very wearisome to me, being so weak; for I did not eat but little food while cm the ship. When we arrived at the home, one and one-half miles from landing, we found Sister Lena preaching to the dear ones. I went into the room and the first thing I knew some one grabbed me behind, then some one the other hand, till three or four had hold of me at once. The dear ones were so rejoiced at my return, till I was afraid it would disturb the preaching. I fell into a chair and wept for joy, for I could not refrain. Oh! I felt so rewarded for leaving home and friends, to preach the gospel. Seven were at the altar, one who had opposed us when here before, asked forgiveness and God justified him freely, with all that were at the altar. Praise our God!

In two or three days a letter came from dear Brother Daugherty, of the work God was doing. I took the train running south through Cheshire to Malpus, and found Brother Daugherty waiting. What a happy greeting! We went about three miles in a cart to his rooms and found a warm welcome in a dear sister’s house, who has accepted the truth and is saved and full of the fire.

I found Brother Daugherty doing exploits for God. Several had accepted salvation. An old man who had seen, and become disgusted with the evils of sectism, had left them and planned for about seven or eight preachers to go to certain places on certain days to preach. He was troubled, but hanging on his little plan and was in the way of others receiving the light; so the work stopped, and we agreed and took it to God and asked him to get the old man out of the way, and believed it. In about two days we could see he was yielding, and got up and confessed the truth and declared himself free from all sectism. Afterward some others accepted the truth freely. Praise God for complete victory! There were six preachers accepted the truth and renounced all sectism and consecrated for the second work of grace. Let all the dear saints join with us in praising God! One of the preachers, Brother Brereton, full of the Holy Ghost and fire went to his appointment last Sunday and gave the truth to the people, which they received gladly and talked of having us come and hold meeting in the Chapel soon. The country is stirred for several miles around, and not much opposition. One of the greatest hindrances is, we have to hold meeting in private houses. School houses are not open for us. I came home to Liverpool yesterday, as God led definitely. I feel God wants us to go to London this winter and open the work there; and we are praying God to open the work and furnish the means. We arrived here with about five dollars, and trusting God and he is proving his word. Hallelujah! Pray for us and the work. We hope to go to Germany in the Spring. Yours saved,

G. R. Achor, Wife and Co.

Dear Saints of God: I am praising God every day for what he has done for me. Praise his holy name! He has healed me of a dreadful cough, asthma or bronchitis. It seemed that I surely would smother. MUST WE SIN?

_____

MANY people are against holiness and sanctification. Please read 1 Thess. 4:7, 8. — For God has not called us to uncleanness, but unto holiness. He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God. Also read 1 Pet. 1:15, 16. — But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. Also read Heb. 12:14. — Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, that he would grant unto us, that we, being delivered out of the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. — Luke 1:73-75.

We know that the word of God teaches two works of grace: first justification, second sanctification. The word justification includes forgiveness of sins — our real transgressions — that we have committed. A child of God that is justified and not yet sanctified is free from their actual transgressions, but not free from the carnal mind; but should they die in their justified state, the word of God teaches us that they are saved. Also the word of God teaches that a justified child of God, cannot commit sin and still remain justified.

Please read 1 Jno. 3:6-9. — Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. Little children let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

Now is not this plain that we cannot commit sin and still remain a child of God? We do not say that it is impossible for us to commit sin, but we do say that we cannot commit sin and he a child of God at the same time.

Jesus says, “Verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. — Jno. 8:34. And Paul says, “When ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.” — Rom. 6:20. Therefore to believe that all men are bound to commit sin, is to believe that all men are free from righteousness. The Bible also teaches that he that committeth sin is of the devil. 1 Jno. 3:8. Hence to believe that all men commit sin, is to believe all men are of the devil.

The Bible further teaches, that they who die in their sins cannot enter heaven. See John 8:21. So if no one can be made free from sin before they die, no one can enter heaven.

Again we read, “Whosoever is born of God, doth not commit sin.” — 1 Jno. 3:9. The word says, “We know, whosoever is born of God sinneth not.” The apostle thinks he is not mistaken, for he says he knows whosoever is born of God sinneth not. Read 1 Jno. 5:18. Then to say that no one lives without committing sin, is to say that no one is born of God.

Sins hide God’s face from the people that he will not hear their prayers. — Isa. 59:2. Then to believe that every body is living in sin, is to believe that nobody has communion with God; or does not receive answers to their prayers.

Dear reader, to believe such an anti-christ doctrine as that would be, to believe that all men are on the broad road to perdition, and in an unredeemable state, and to believe that men can spend all their days committing sin, and still be children of God and go to heaven in the end, is to believe the lie of universalism; for if God will take one sinner to heaven he will take them all, for he has no respect of persons.

We learn by reading the word of God that God does not take sinners to heaven, for he says in 1 Pet. 4:17, 18, For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? and if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?” We will have to appeal to the word of God for an answer. Read Jno. 8:21.

Some one says God does not uphold people in living without sin, and for a proof quotes Eccl. 7:20. — For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good and sinneth not. We read in the Bible that Solomon made this expression when his heart had been turned away from God, after strange women, and he was backslidden from God, and like most all backsliders judged every body by his own spiritual condition. Then they quote 1 Kings 8:46. — “If they sin against thee, for there is no man that sinneth not.” Yes we know that all men have sinned and come short of the glory of God. But Jesus came to save his people from their sins. Read Rom. 3:23. And again if we say that we have not sinned we make him a liar and his word is not in us; which is in 1 Jno. 1:10.

Now please read 1 Jno. 1:7. — “if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”

The Old Testament as well as the New, teaches that men should and did live free from sin, perfect before God, and did even walk with God; therefore the above scriptures that people quote must be understood as simply teaching the universal fall, and depravity of the human family because of transgression, and that all men have more or less been sinners in their past life. Opposers of the truth only show us where the fall has left us: but make no allusion to the grace of God that lifts and preserves the humble trusting soul above this low plane. Any other interpretation would ignore salvation and conflict with the rest of the Bible.

The above scriptures evidently refer to what people all have been, for we see in 1 Tim. 1:15, that Paul speaks of himself as the chief of sinners. Read 1 Tim. 1:15. “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.” Which can only be understood as referring to what he had been; for we know that Paul was not the chief of sinners at the time that he wrote the above. Had this been the case he could never have said, “Be ye followers of me, even as I am of Christ.” — 1 Cor. 11:1.

But Paul’s holy life is on record, for he says, For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. — Phil. 1:21.

So you see his life was not spotted with the flesh, but he lived the life of Christ.

Some refer us to Prov. 20:9, Who can say I have made my heart clean? I am pure from my sin? Certainly no person can say that he has made his own heart clean, for it takes the blood of Christ to cleanse our heart by the sanctifying power of the Spirit. Only Christ can save from sin. That was Christ’s mission in the world; he came to save his people from their sins. Matt. 1:21. — “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.”

And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; and put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. — Acts 15:8, 9. So you see that through the blood of Christ we can have a pure heart. Read Matt. 5:8. — “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. Also, 1 Pet. 1:22. — Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently.

We are commanded to love one another with a pure heart, which we could not do without we had a pure heart. May the dear Lord help you to lay aside your prejudice, and receive with meekness the engrafted word which is able to save your soul. — Jas. 1:21.

Now let us see from whence this false notion or doctrine proceeds: that men can retain spiritual life in disobedience. In the garden of Eden here we find God telling our first parents, if they sin against him they will die the same day. Gen. 2:17. Soon after we hear the devil contradicting the words of God, by telling them they shall not surely die. Gen. 3:4. God said they could not commit sin and remain spiritual: the devil said they could.

Now we have found the author of this false doctrine; we have traced it to the father of ail lies. See Jno. 8:44. The serpent who is the devil, introduced this false doctrine through the serpent. But to day he does not need to stoop so low; he has many thousand human beings who are ready to carry his delusions to the ends of the earth.

W. S. Bennet.

Dear Brethren and Sisters: I am glad I am saved to the uttermost. Glory to God! I have had some hard trials since I was at the camp meeting, but I can say, the dear Lord has brought me through, and I feel more determined to stand for the Lord. Dear Saints of God: I am glad to testify to day that I am saved and sanctified through the precious blood of Jesus. I do praise God for full and free salvation. God says without holiness no man shall see the Lord. I intend by the grace of God to live for him alone, while life shall last. I have sweet peace in my soul every day. All the dear saints pray for me, that I may be firm and not yield to temptations. Your saved sister,

Mary Renegar.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I am led of the Lord to write a few lines. It is with joy I testify that I am kept from sin each day by the mighty power of God. I thank God that he has given me the victory over the flesh and the devil. And I can say that I am dead to the world and all its pleasures, and alive to God. Praise his holy name! I want the prayers of all the dear saints, that I may always stand firm in the love of Christ and in obedience to his will. Yours sister in Christ,

Kate Nelson.

Dear Brethren: I have been greatly blessed by the reading of the TRUMPET. I am so glad that God has a people, not only in our land but in other lands, that believe that we can be saved from sin and out for the Lord from the world, and have the indwelling Spirit in their hearts. I am blessedly saved and trusting alone in Jesus. May he give me grace, that I always may be found down at his feet. May the dear Lord bless and keep us true to him. The world said many evil things about our blessed Lord, because the world is at enmity against God, and they will say many evil things against those that love his appearing. But let us press forward and look to Jesus, the captain of our salvation; for we shall shout victory through that precious blood, that was shed for us. Oh that the world might taste and see the riches of his grace! Yours in the faith, saved and kept by his divine power. Praise his name forever!

Dear Saints: I feel it would be to the glory of God to write my testimony. I can say of a truth that I feel a sweet peace in my soul. Oh I am so glad that I accepted the truth when I did. While I see so many going on in their sin, I can say that I am dead to this world and its pleasures. I thank God for the benefit I received during the short meeting that Bro. Speck and Co. held at this place, and the victory I have over the spirits of the devil. I give God all the glory. Bless his holy name for salvation! From your saved and sanctified brother,

S. L. Yoder.

Dear Saints of the Most High God: It is with pleasure that I write my testimony and tell how the dear Lord has blessed me, and family. He keeps me in perfect peace, while I in his fulness dwell. O glory to his name forever and ever! My wife was very sick in June, and was very near death’s door; but we asked the dear saints to pray for her and she was healed of typhoid pneumonia, and she has better health than she has had for about six years. He has also healed our baby that was almost at the point of death. Bless God from whom all blessings flow; who forgiveth all our sins and healeth all our diseases.

Dear Saints: May the blessings of God rest on you entirely. I am rejoicing in a free and a full salvation: we are standing alone in this place. We do not have the privilege of meeting with God’s people very often, but we have the sweet peace in our souls that passeth all understanding. Glory to God! Some of the people have wondered why we don’t attend the meetings of the sects. There is no food there for a real child of God. We are saved out of Babylon and are in the church of the living God, and saved from all sin and and confusion. Glory to God! We do not have many meetings, but God’s love is sufficient to keep us. We just live by the word of God and prayer. Oh dear ones, pray for us. Your brother, saved, and sanctified by a distinct second work of grace,

Ira Kepford.

Dear Saints of God: I want to write my testimony for the glory of God. I have stepped out upon the promises of God and am praising him every day for sweet peace in my soul. I rejoice that Jesus saves me from my sins. To enter heaven we must be pure. Bro’s Lundy and Pike have been holding meetings here and we are rejoicing in seeing souls coming home to God. I pray God to keep my feet upon the corner stone, and help me to let my light shine, so as to lead souls from the way of sin to peace in Christ. May God help the dear people to awake to their condition before too late. Jesus says, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” But the people here say they cannot do this, but are obliged to sin more or less. I know that Jesus keeps me from all sin every day. Praise his name! Saved to day,

Annie Renegar.

To the Gospel Trumpet: Dear Friends, having been a reader of your paper for some time I have been convinced that I am not living as I should, although I have been professing to be a Christian for some three years. I am not satisfied with the experience I have had, and write you this letter in all sincerity, asking you to pray for me and my wife that the Lord may lead us into the full light and give us of his Spirit, and that we may be sanctified and made every whit whole. We earnestly request some one to come here and preach the pure Word in this place. Our house is small, and such as we have we will gladly share with any one that will come in the name of Jesus and teach us the way of life. We are both members of a sect, but not satisfied. Some one please answer this soon. We can secure a house to hold meetings in, and will give the best accommodations we can to the one that comes. I remain yours, seeking for light,

B. R. Wolf.

Dear Saints: May our dear Father in heaven abundantly bless and sweetly keep you all, and may you all become thoroughly established, which enables us to rise triumphantly far above all sin and iniquity. Amen. Well, praise our God, we are happy to report victory in our souls. It is just wonderful what the dear Lord is doing for us, and his church at this place. We meet from three to eight times a week now, and many have acknowledged this to be the true way. There are seventeen of us now, with a good prospect for more. Praise God for it! We have blessed meetings. The dear Lord meets with us, and we just let the Spirit have full sway, and we all are growing in grace. Truly God is good to his children. We praise God for calling us out of Babylon, and to night find us free in our blessed Redeemer, and happy in his pure love. Oh praise his dear name forever and ever! Amen. Your brother and sister in Christ Jesus,

O. A. and S. E. Marquiss.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel it would be to the glory of God, for me to write my testimony. This beautiful Sabbath morning finds me praising God for a full and complete salvation in Jesus. Oh! it is wonderful how God will follow after a backslider, and strive with him. About two months ago, the dear Lord convicted me so, that I concluded there was no mercy for me, and I felt that way; but praise the Lord, he can work and none can hinder. About this time my little boy took down with the fever, and the Lord showed me if I did not make a full and complete, and unconditional surrender to God, that the child would not be permitted to stay with me, for I was not fit to raise it in the condition I was in, so I just gave up completely into the Lord’s hands, and oh such blessings I received! I wrote to the TRUMPET for the prayers of the saints at that place, for the healing of the little child, and the Lord raised him up speedily. Praise his dear name! And this morning I am all given up to the Lord, to do his whole will at all times. Pray for me dear ones, that I may live low and humble at his feet, and that I may be steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the love of God. Your humble brother in Christ.

To all God’s Dear Children, Greeting: I praise God for his kind care over us. When I look back over my life, I cannot praise God enough for the way he has led me. I have just been reading some testimonies in the TRUMPET, and it so stirred my soul to hear how the work is going on in some places. I am so glad there are people in the world that preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And we would like to have some Holy Ghost saints to come to this place to preach. There are a few here, that are out in the evening light; but I fear sometimes, if they do not get help soon, those that are not established might give way. The tide of opposition is so strong. If any one who reads this should feel a drawing to come this way, let us know and we will do what we can. We are trusting God for all things, soul and body. Let all who read this pray for us; we are passing through a severe trial at present. A niece of mine came to our hou.. … with typhoid fever. Pray that y.. … be kept from the disease.
