BURDEN BEARING.

__________

“Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” Eph. 6:2.

It was only a teardrop, pass it by,
Not a word was spoken, ‘twas but a sigh;
Why should I linger in the busy throng,
Whore voices are hurrying me along?
“Only a teardrop,” and glistening eye;
With dark sunken traces, where shadows lie, —
Shadows of something, like fear surd dread,
Of being numbered, as with the dead.

That teardrop could a volume make,
If a willing mind the time would take
To read the shadows, just below,
Perhaps a tale of grief and woe,
Of trouble sore, on every hand,
That God alone, can understand:
But why should this disturb my way,
And bid me, just a moment stay?

Oh! let me wait, I hear the sigh;
My heart in sympathy, draws nigh;
Dear Jesus, furnish just a word,
For you, my sympathy hath stirred.
One little seed, from heaven sown,
May reach, to thine eternal throne,
And draw this careworn mind away
From the heavy burden of today.

Oh! may we ever bear in mind,
That little deeds of every kind
Are noted down in God’s own way,
To meet us, on the judgment day;
Each careless word and thoughtless look,
Is noted down in that great book,
So let us mind life’s little things
“Then take with joy. what the harvest brings.

HISTORY OF THE MILLENNIAL TRADITION.

_____

THE term, Millennium, is derived from a thousand, and is used to denote a thousand years of literal reign of Christ on earth. A tradition that arose among the many early inventions of men, and has been carried along with the rubbish of error through past ages. Millennium teachers have all along been, and are still, divided into several different, and conflicting theories. There are pre-millennium-ists, and post-millenniumists. That is, some locate it before Christ’s coming, others after. Some, teach that it began on the day of Pentecost, and others that it followed the destruction of the Jewish capital and nation, in A. D. 70, and many other theories might be gathered. But why all this disparity and confusion? If the Bible taught such a thousand years reign, it would set forth the matter clear enough to locate its time. But the whole thing is a farce, the tradition of men, and product of error.

We trace its origin in history and find that it has no place in the teachings of Christ or the apostles. “It was the universal feeling among primitive Christians that they were living in the last period of the world’s history.” — Ency. Brit., Vol. 8, page 534. Such indeed is the uniform teaching of the Old and New Testament, that the present gospel economy, and dispensation of the Holy Spirit is the last link in the chain of God’s plan with this earth, the last meeted out portion of time. And such was the universal faith of the primitive church. We read again in Ency. Brit., Vol. 16, page 315, “No wherein the discourses of Jesus is there a hint of a limited duration of the Messianic Kingdom. The Apostolic epistles are equally free from any trace of chiliasm.” — Another name for the millennium.

It is true that in Revelations a passage is found which has furnished a remote pretext for the fabrication of the false tradition, which we will not now stop to notice. The voice of history is quite uniform in giving the origin of millenniumism. The mass of the Jews stumbled over the spiritual character of Christ’s kingdom. Having more national pride than godliness, they wished Christ to set up a visible and earthly kingdom. But he blasted their hopes when he announced that his kingdom “cometh not with observation,” and “is not of this world.” Notwithstanding these plain declarations of the King of Glory, the old mania lingered in the brains of many of the Jews who had professed faith in Christ, and finally developed this idea: Christ has not really set up his kingdom yet, but will soon return and establish a visible reign upon the earth. “This idea that the Messianic Kingdom of the future on earth should have a definite duration has its roots in the Jewish apocalyptic literature, where it appears at a comparatively late period.” Ency. Brit., Vol. 16, page 315. “Wherever Christianity made its way into a mind deeply impregnated with Judaism, the moral character of the Messiah had still to maintain a strong contest with the temporal. * * * At every period of more than ordinary religious excitement, a millennial, or, at least a reign partaking of a temporal character, has been announced as on the eve of its commencement; the Christian mind has retrograded toward the state of Jewish error which prevailed about the time of Christ’s coming.” — Milman’s history of Christianity, page 172.

Here is plain truth. All notions about Christ setting up a temporal kingdom here on earth, is going back to the same lie over which the Jewish nation were blinded, stumbled and rejected Christ. This is just what Adventism, Russellism, Jesreelism, Baxterism, and a hundred other young isms of darkness are doing today. Christ has not set a kingdom that suits their earthly minds, therefore they ignore his kingdom, as the old Jews did, and look for him to set up a visible empire. They all, like the blinded Jews, cannot receive the description Christ gave of his kingdom, namely, that it “is. righteousness, joy and peace in the Holy Spirit,” but are looking for something else.

Having seen that it was the Jewish error that gave rise to the millennium tradition, let us now see when it began. We take the following from Buck’s Theological Dictionary, page 370.

“Though there has been no age of the church in which the millenium was not admitted by individual divines of the first eminence, it is yet evident, from the writings of Eusebius, Irenaeus, Origen, and others, among the ancients, as well as from the histories of Dupin, Mosheim, and all the moderns, that it was never adopted by the whole church, or made an article of the established creed in any nation.

About the middle of the fourth century the Millenarians held the following tenets:

1st. That the city of Jerusalem should be rebuilt, and that the land of Judea should be the habitation of those who were to reign on the earth a thousand years.

2dly. That the first resurrection was not to be confined to the martyrs, but that, after the fall of Antichrist, all the just were to rise, and all that were on the earth were to continue for that space of time.

3dly. That Christ shall then come down from heaven, and be seen on earth, and reign there with his servants.

4thly. That the saints, during this period, shall enjoy all the delights of a terrestrial paradise.” Papias, bishop of Hierapolis, who wrote and taught about the middle of the second century, is the father of millenniumism. Says the French historian, Dupin, Vol. 2, page 65: “Twas he (Papias) who gave rise to a common opinion in the three first centuries, that before the day of judgement Jesus Christ would reign upon earth with his elect a thousand years.”

But we go directly to Eusebius, the ancient church historian, who wrote in the third century, speaking of Papias — page 115 — he says, “The same historian also gives other accounts, which he says he adds as received by him from unwritten traditions, likewise certain strange parables of our Lord, and of his doctrine, and some other matters rather too fabulous. In these he says there, would be a certain millennium after the resurrection, and that there would be a corporeal reign of Christ on this very earth; which things he appears to have imagined, as if they were authorized by the apostolic narrations, not understanding correctly those matters which they propounded mystically in their representations. For he was very; limited in his comprehensions, as is evident from his discourses.”

Here then we have this novel reign of Christ, pronounced by an ancient and competent judge, the mere fabrication of ignoronce, and yet some modern teachers, who think themselves wise, still hold the product of Papias’ blind imagination.

This fabrication of ignorance was rejected by the intelligent. Origen, one of the most learned and influencial church fathers, of the beginning of the third century strongly opposed the new tradition. He says, “It was confined to those of the simpler sort, and that the few who held it did so in secret.” Thererroneous doctrine was overthrown by the arguments of Origen, and others, and made but little appearance again until in the utter darkness of the tenth century.

But what was to be the character of the thousand years reign of Christ on earth, as imagined by Papias?

“That the saints, during this period, shall enjoy all the delights of a terrestrial paradise.” — BUCK. It was not a reign of high spiritual bliss that was pictured to their minds, for that could have been found in Christ’s kingdom of “righteousness, joy and peace in the Holy Spirit,” but a reign of terrestrial, that is earthly pleasure, was hoped for.

As the reader will find in last issue, Barnabas spake of “one day with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” From this he draws the idea that six thousand years will finish the duration allotted to this world. But observe that the epistle of Barnabas does not say that the seventh day represents a thousand years of millennial rest; but says, Then follows the “beginning of another world,” an unlimited reign of Christ. But Papias takes the same scripture, and teaches that the seventh day represents a seventh thousand years of “a kingdom of sensuous description.” Now in the light of God we denounce the whole thing as an invention of the devil to keep men asleep in this, “the day of salvation,” with the soothing lie that another age will bring them the salvation they neglect in the present and only “acceptable time.” In Rev. 20:4, John “saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshiped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands: and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection.” — Rev. 20:4-6.

Now in all this there is not one word said about a thousand years literal reign of Christ on earth. The persons of which this thousand years reign is affirmed were disembodied spirits. They, with the rest of the dead, are called the first resurrection, which is unto a life of holiness. These same souls are seen under the altar, in the opening of the fifth seal, and they were commanded “to rest yet a little season, until their fellow servants also, and their brethren should be killed as they were.” — Rev. 6:9-11. These coming martyrs constitute the rest of the dead, and all together the first resurrection, according to John 5:24, 25. While the second is the literal resurrection of all the dead from the graves; both the good and the bad arise in the same hour, according to verse 28, and Daniel 12:2. The first resurrection include all who have arisen from spiritual death into spiritual life. They were very numerous while the pure gospel shone in the first centuries, then came a long period, a thousand years of darkness wherein but few souls found their way to Christ. The saved of the first ages, millions of whom had been put to death for their testimony, waited during the long dark age for the remnant of God’s holy saints who are being spiritually resurrected in the revival of the pure gospel in the evening of time. So while these disembodied saints were reigning with Christ in paradise, darkness instead of righteousness reigned on earth.

Hence there is not a shadow of support for the literal millennial reign of Christ on earth a thousand years, but the whole Bible is against it. Both the Old and New Testament give repeated warning that the present dispensation fills up the “last days” of earth’s allotted time. “In the last days it shall come to pass, I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh.” Acts. 2:17. “God hath in these last days spoken to us by his Son.” Heb. 1:2. “Little children, it is the last time.” 1 John 2:18. All such scriptures bear false testimony if there is another measured portion of duration beyond the present gospel dispensation. But the word of God is true, and the “end of all things is at hand.” 1 Pet. 4:7. “Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples; and are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.” 1 Cor. 10:11. If it were true that another state of things were to follow the present for a thousand years, then it were not true that the ends of the world are come upon us of the present dispensation. Christ excludes the idea of a millennial reign of righteousness just before his second advent; for then he says a Sodom state of sin shall generally prevail. — Luke 17:26-30. And immediately following his return; for then the final judgment and eternal sentence shall be given to all men. Matt. 25:19, 31-46.

The doctrines of devils are, some other way but Christ, some other time but now. The doctrine of God is, Christ “the way, the truth and the life,” “neither is there salvation in any other.” And “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” “Let God be true and every man a liar.” Amen! While no literal reign of a thousand years is taught in the word, thank God, the saints do take the kingdom of righteousness, joy and peace, and reign in life by one Christ Jesus, and are even now kings and priests unto God, and they do reign upon the earth, having victory over all the power of the adversary.

Sela-hammahlekoth.

_____

TH IS word is found in 1st Sam. 23:28. It signifies ROCK OF DIVISIONS. It is a type of the flesh or carnal mind. Saul had sinned and fallen from the favor of God, and was persecuting ‘God’s anointed King.’ This is explained in Gal. 4:29, and Paul says it was so in his day, and so it is now. The carnal mind is the rock of divisions. Were this destroyed there would be no divisions in the religious world. The fact that God’s people differ in qualifications, knowledge, understanding, power, gifts, etc., is no reason whatever that there should be any divisions. Paul in the great mysteries of the Spirit, according to the wisdom given unto him, spake some things hard to be understood, which they that were unstable and unlearned, took advantage of and wrested them according to their carnal minds, but Peter did not feel out of fellowship with Paul on this account, and even when Paul gave him a sharp rebuke at Antioch and withstood him to the face, we have no record that he became indignant and began to defend himself and try to influence the saints against Paul, and persuade them to formulate a creed of their own differing from the gospel which was for both Jews and Gentiles alike. Because we cannot understand so much as some other brother or sister, this cannot separate us, so long as the carnal mind is destroyed. All divisions are carnal whether doctrinal, or upon any other religious subject. Even the preferences shown by the church at Corinth were carnal and were disapproved by the apostle. “For while one saith, I am of Paul and another I am of Apollos, are ye not carnal.” These led to envying and strife. Every thing that tends to divisions among the saints is a sure indication of this SELA-HAMMAHLEKOTH. Every human creed showed that this fatal rock lies beneath the surface, and has wrecked the craft that promised safety to those onboard. Just as soon as man begins to legislate upon God’s word, he shows that he is not satisfied with it as God gave it, and hence indicates his carnal mind which is enmity against God. No human creed contains all the Bible, if it did then there would be no use for it, for no carnal mind would be satisfied with it, and every obedient sanctified soul has no earthly use for it any way, because such a person is satisfied with the Bible. If all were satisfied with the Bible just as it is, then human creeds would be more than useless. A creed is what we believe. If we believe the Bible, then we have the divine creed. If we substitute a human creed, we declare that we do not believe all the Bible. If we say we believe the Bible-and then add a human creed to it, we add to the Bible. Every human creed either adds to, or takes from, or omits some of the Bible. If we say we believe the Bible, and have no other creed but the Bible, and then do not live up to the Bible, we are hypocrites. If we say we believe a human creed because it agrees with our belief, we give every body else the same privilege to believe as they please, and that just suits the carnal mind. This has filled the world with human creeds, which all claim to believe the Bible.

DIVINE HEALING
—OF—
SOUL AND BODY.

A New Book,
—by—
E. E. BYRUM.

_____

This book is just fresh from the author’s pen, and a glance at the contents is enough to convince any one of its interest and value to those seeking a more thorough khowledge of the Divine Being, and his dealings with people at the present time, as well as in days past.

The first part of the book very plainly marks out the way from sin unto full salvation, according to the teaching of the sacred word.

It presents the gospel truth in such a way as to throw a gleam of light into the pathway of the sinner, and enable him to see that there is hope beyond, through the mercies of a blessed Redeemer.

The BELIEVER is led to see the beauties of full salvation, and the joys in a life of Christian perfection.

THE HEALING OF THE BODY

constitutes the second part of the book. This consists of twenty-six chapters on doctrinal subjects, exposing and overthrowing false ideas and theories concerning the healing power in these last days, showing when, how, and under what circumstances and conditions God heals the sick and afflicted at the present time.

It gives a history and testimonies of healing from the time of Abraham, through the different ages, up to the present time.

The third part of the book consists of the

WITNESSES OF TO DAY.

These are wonderful testimonies of persons who have been healed within the last few years by divine power; such as being instantly restored to sight after having been blind for years; the lame throw away their crutches; broken bones are instantly healed; invalids who have suffered for years immediately arise and walk, after the prayer of faith is offered, etc. The author is personally acquainted, with nearly all the parties who have herein given their testimonies, and gives their names and addresses in the book, so that persons doubting the truthfulness of the same can write to the parties themselves.

It will be a precious volume to those who are afflicted in either soul or body. The chapters on faith, and also other subjects, will strengthen the faith of the reader, and aid in a closer walk with Him who is the “giver of every good and perfect gift.”

It contains 248 good-sized pages; good, plain print, on heavy paper. Neatly bound in cloth, $ .75. Library (half morocco), marble edge, $1.10. Send two cent stamp for special terms to agents. Address,

Cranks are usually found in the shape of the letter S. That letter stands for Salvation, and it is often the case that men are called cranks, simply because they have salvation, and act just as saved people should act; they are full of praises to God as men redeemed from sin and hell should be. Amen! “Let the saints be joyful in glory,” though they turn the world right side up.

We had the privilege of attending the meeting held in Cheshire, by Bro’s Kilpatrick, Dillon and Co. over Saturday night and Sabbath. The rain kept the meetings out of the grove, except Sabbath P. M. A good work, we learned, had been accomplished in the church during the week. Many got an advanced experience and all were profited by the word. At the Sabbath service in the grove the Lord wrought powerfully, and several souls were saved. Some who had been unhappy wanderers from Father’s house, were graciously received home again, and made to taste his great love. Others were wholly sanctified. Praise the Lord!

HOW IT WENT WITH THE PRINCE.

Many of our readers have doubtless been curious to know how it went with Prince Michael, the Detroit impostor who was arrested, some time ago and brought before the court under the charge of adultery. For some reason his trial was deferred, and has been recently executed. The man was found guilty and sentenced for five years. From what the papers state it was well for him that he was placed in such safe lodging, as he was exposed to the fury of an indignant mob. One man who, through devotion to his false religion, and false prophet, testified against his own daughter who had been ruined by the devil’s prince, was taken in hands by the mob, conducted to a barber shop where he quickly shed his long shaggy mark of the beast, and from there he was taken to the depot and put on the first train with orders never to return to Detroit. False religion is a bad thing in this world, and will prove worse in the next.

__________

UNSAVED EDITORS AND PUBLISHERS.

They are plenty, yea we mean venders of religion. In reading one of Satan’s blind sheets by the name of the Prophetic Age, we were forcibly struck with the evidence of an unsaved state in the case of its writers. One single sentence, was sufficient to show this, as follows: “It requires a full compliance with all the ordinances that Christ instituted in order to get into Christ.” These are the exact words of J. B. Lair, one of its editors. Now we remark that God has but one way of saving souls. That is, “By grace are ye saved through faith.” “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, — such as doing the ordinances of Christ — but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration ant the renewing of the Holy Spirit, which he shed on us abundantly through Christ Jesus” — Titus 3:5, 6. Such is the uniform teaching of the Word. When the jailor asked Paul what to do in order to be saved, the apostle did not say, “You must comply with all the ordinances that Christ institutes in order to get into Christ,” — i. e. to be saved. But, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved,” yea, “and thy house,” on the same conditions. Now since God has the same way to save all, all who get salvation get it in the same way, and know just how they get it, and can speak that which they do know. It follows therefore that all who teach some other way of salvation, show that they have not obtained the experience of divine grace, and are only guessing at it. For instance, when persons say salvation is by a catechetical course, by good works, by first observing the ordinances of Christ, or by any other unscriptural plan, they clearly publish, to all who are saved in God, that they themselves are yet unsaved.

To observe all — yea all — the ordinances is a Christian’s duty and delight, but any person outside of Christ and his saving grace, is unfit to perform these holy institutions of the church of God.

THE BEAVER DAM IND. CAMP MEETING.

We received a notice of this meeting some time ago, and supposed it was running in the paper, but we fine it has not been published; it has been an oversight. It is to begin Aug. 10. Will Bro. Gast please excuse us, and send another notice immediately, giving directions as to where the people shall come, etc.

The Beaver Dam Ind. camp, like the one here, is of a general character. Many come from surrounding states to the glorious feast, and we hope to meet a glorious host there this year. It is a blessed place to go.

__________

The report from Wichita, Kan. is favorable for a glorious camp meeting there. Praise the Lord! I think we can regard it as settled that it is God’s will the meeting should be held; we expect to be there. But as we go to Kansas from Iowa, the Robinson camp would naturally come next in order after the Hedrick, Ia. meeting, being right on a line from Hedrick to Wichita. So we change the time of the Robinson meeting, with their permission, to September 2-11 and the Wichita will begin Sep. 15, and perhaps run over Sabbath 25.

The Robinson meeting has been announced as a general meeting for the West. Hope all the workers and saints that possibly can will attend, especially from Kan., Mo. and Neb., as Robinson is near the corner of these states.

The Red Lion, Pa., camp meeting is also a general convocation for the last.

OPEN FOR TRUTH.

I am seeking for the whole, truth. I was converted in 186o, was sanctified in 1889, and since this state have been in the enjoyment of perfect love that casteth out fear. I have for many years been made spiritually sick at the fact that all the churches receive sinners of nearly all classes into their fold, and then keep them there. But what am I to do? If I leave mine I will stand alone, no ordinance privilege. So far as I can judge of you by reading your paper I can see that you are scriptural except in baptism in water. Do you make it obligatory upon all the saints to be immersed? as I suppose you use this mode. I have been drawn to the above conclusion by seeing that some saint in writing, spoke of going down into the water and being buried with Christ. I am open for conviction and want the whole truth as it is in Jesus. Oh for more light!

Your brother in love with Jesus,

R. I. Arrington.

Wrens, Ga.

ANSWER TO THE ABOVE QUESTIONS.

First, as to whether you should come out of sectism, even though you must stand alone, we can only give you God’s word. “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive ..ou.” — 2 Cor. 6:14—17. There are ..nners you say, dear brother, taken ..to the sect, and retained there: having your name on the class book with them, you are yoked together with unbelievers and hypocrites. Wherefore God says, Come out from among them and be ye separate. As for taking the ordinances with them, by so doing you are recognizing them as God’s children, and so helping to keep them asleep in their lost condition. Better obey God, be separate, and thereby some may be awakened and saved. “And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her my people that ye be not partakers of her sins; and that ye receive not of her plagues.” — Rev. 18:4.

Do we make it obligatory upon all the saints to be immersed?

Ans. No, it is not in our place to make any thing obligatory upon God’s children. “Christ is the head of the body,” and he only is our “commander and leader.” “The government is upon his shoulders.” But we further observe that Christ set our example on baptism, when he came and was baptized in Jordan, and straightway went up out of the water, and to all he says, “Follow me.” You read in the Trumpet about men “going down into the water and being buried with Christ.” So you read in your New Testament. See Acts. 8:36, 38, 39, Rom. 6:4, Col. 2:12. Now God, through his own word, makes this obligatory upon his saints, and the Holy Spirit, “who guides us into all truth” convicts of the same, and so these are they that “follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth.” They obey all the ordinances of Christ, not because it is enjoined by any man, but because commanded in the word of God, they do it as unto God.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

Burbank, O., July 6, 1892.

Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: God bless and keep you all for his dear name’s sake. The meeting at this place, closed last night with victory on the Lord’s side. On account of the rain and cool weather the meeting was held in Bro. Ezra Smith’s barn. Quite a number of the saints came in from different places. The Lord helped much in delivering the truth, and the mighty power of God was manifested during all the meeting. There were about twelve consecrations. Several were healed by the power of God, one sister wonderfully healed of consumption, and one delivered of devils, and all much edified and strengthened in the Lord. We go from here to Wooster, Ohio, to hold a meeting over next Lord’s day. Start for Chippewa, Ont., July 14, the Lord willing. We feel led of the Lord to go to Georgia, but feel it would be better to work in the East till fall. Now any of saints in the East desiring meetings please let us hear from you at once, also the brethren in the South. Address us at Grand Junction, Mich. Pray for us that we may have many souls for our hire. God bless all. Amen.

Your saved brethren,

W. J. Henry & Wm. H. Miller.

Dearly Beloved Readers of the Trumpet: Our souls are filled with joy and gladness because of the glorious salvation of our souls. The meeting in Gratiot Co. was a grand success, a complete victory from beginning to end; many precious souls were saved, and many wrongs made right. To be sure there are some things left yet that are not as satisfactory as we would desire, but we praise the good Lord for the glorious outpouring of his Holy Spirit. Bro’s Michels and Heckler went to Merrill on Friday before the meeting closed and held meeting there over Sunday. We (Bro. Michels and myself) took the train at Wheeler, Monday morning, the 4th of July for Clam Lake, Antrim Co. at which place we commenced meeting Tuesday evening. There were a few consecrations and one healed, and one baptized. Bro. Michels returned home on Saturday the 9th and I returned to day (Monday the 11th) There were quite a number of the dear ones from East Jordan in attendance. God blessed our souls, and we trust some seed was sown that will spring up in the future. God grant it for his name’s sake. Amen.

Fern, Pa., July 2, 1892.

Dear Trumpet Readers: We report perfect victory in his name. On the 11th ult. Bro. Martz and I went to West Monterey and held meetings over the Sabbath which were blessed of God. One backslider who had become tainted with and almost captured by spiritualism was restored to the grace of God. The church advanced out into the clear light and glory of God. Tuesday eve we met and had a most precious meeting at Mariasville. On Wednesday Bro. Wingert conveyed us to this place where in a day or two we begun meeting in a grove about a mile from here which lasted ten days; but rains falling about every day hindered in the fore part of the meeting. When we called on God who also stayed the rains, so from the middle the meeting went on with increased increased interest. One sinner saved, others deeply convicted. A great deal of prejudice was removed and the truth was planted in scores of hearts which will yet bring forth fruit for God. There were about six cases of divine healing of catarrh, etc. We are now holding a few meetings in Fern, one sister has been gloriously sanctified. Meetings will close here Monday, and the 5th we go to East Hickory to labor in that vicinity and at other points in Forest Co., and perhaps at Titusville also, the Lord willing. Any one desiring our services in that county let us hear from you at once.

Willshire, O., July 4, 1892.

Dear Trumpet Readers: May the Lord’s richest blessings rest upon you all. Amen. We are saved with victory in our souls. Praise the dear Lord! We are glad to report to you another glorious victory in King Jesus’ name. We just closed another three days meeting in the hall at Willshire.

Six more souls were added to the church. Four presented their bodies a living sacrifice and received the desire of their hearts. Five were buried with Christ in baptism, among which was old mother Strickler, who has passed the ad vance age of eighty- seven; was converted but a few weeks ago and has been healed of disease. Some of her unsaved children fought against her being baptized and said it would kill her, but praise the Lord, God gave her the grace to set the example before her children and the world, there being a great many people to witness the scene. She came up out of the water clapping her hands and praising the Lord.

There seems to be a great interest taken by the people. We would be glad to have some of God’s holy anointed ones to come over and help us. Pray for us.

Grand Junction, Mich., June 30, 1892.

To all the Saints of God: Our testimony this morning is that we are saved through the precious blood of Jesus. The camp-meeting was a glorious season of victory to our soul. The mighty power of God was present to heal both soul and body. Many found Jesus precious in delivering them from all sin. The sick were healed and devils cast out. All glory to our king. We came to C. M. expecting to enjoy a feast with the saints, and then return to the West again to battle for the Lord Jesus; but it seems to be the will of God that we should remain in this locality until after the Beaver Dam C. M. After which we will go west, the Lord willing, probably with dear Bro. Warner to Iowa and thence to the C. M. at Robinson, Brown Co., Kan. in Sept. After which, if the Lord directs we expect to spend the remainder of the fall and winter in Kan. Those desiring meetings after that time can make arrangements at Robinson or address me at Reeds, Mo. However we can but say, in all things, the will of the Lord be done. Wherever God sends there will we go, either at home or abroad. Our soul is all on fire for God. O hallelujah to his name! “If we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his son cleanseth us from all sin.” It is only those who walk in the light as he [Christ] is in the light, that have fellowship one with another. Those who are not in fellowship with Jesus Christ are not in fellowship with God’s children. Christian fellowship comes from heaven only. Nor can the elect be deceived in this matter. Jesus says, “If it were possible the very elect would be deceived.” But Isaiah says, “As birds flying, so will the Lord of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it.” — Isa. 31:5. Jude tells us in verse 24 that he is able to keep us from falling. In Rev. 3:20 we read, Because thou last kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. Praise God we need not be deceived and led astray by false spirits. Out consecration should cover the whole ground, under all circumstances. Service, sacrifice or suffering. We should consider our covenant with God more sacred than life itself. If it should be prison or death, count the cost, pay the price, and trust the results with God. “Charity never faileth.” Not even amidst the temptations, trials, besetments, bufferings and false accusations of the devil. Nor is it influenced by flattery. Glory be to God! Some compare themselves with other saints and do as they do instead of measuring by the word, trimming to the pattern. Jesus Christ is the pattern. Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all for the glory of God. If we are all sold out for God and Christ dwells in our hearts, then we are not our own; we are God’s property. Therefore whatever men or devils do to us, or say about us, it is about God’s property, and we have nothing to do with it. Vengeance is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord. Paul says, “For I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” Praise the Lord! The fields are white to harvest; and God has work for all who are willing. The labor’s light, the wages fair, satisfaction is guaranteed to all who labor here; indeed the Psalmist says they shall be abundantly satisfied. O hallelujah! God will do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think. Amen. David tells us that the man whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates therein day and night, shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. Jesus says to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you and, lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the of the world. Lord help us to abide in thee and thy words abide in us. “But if any man teach otherwise and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the doctrine which is according to godliness, he is proud, knowing nothing, and destitute of the truth.” O glory be to God, he is a wall of fire around his children. We are safe within the fold. Pray for me that I may be kept in perfect humility.

Yours in the love of Jesus,

J. F. Lundy.

HEALED OF PARALYSIS.

Dear Gospel Trumpet: About twenty-one years ago I was paralyzed and made unable to walk. Had not walked for twenty-one years. On April 19, 1892, I got up and began to walk, and to day I can walk as good as any one. God did it. I prayed and God heard and answered my prayers, and on April 19, 1892, which I had not done in twenty-one years, I walked out of my house and walked up town. It was a faith cure and nothing else, and I live to praise God and tell others what they can do by prayer. In a few days I will have my physician make a statement and have it published in the paper and send you a copy. It was publisded in the paper here a few days ago, and I received many letters congratulating me and enquiring about the truth of my recovery. My age is sixty-nine years.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT.

__________

IS IT TO THE GLORY OF GOD?

_____

THE pure and heavenly law of the Lord requires that, “whether, therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” — 1 Cor. 10:31.

In the name of the Lord, dearly beloved readers, we would ask a few questions touching the above rule, and over habits, and maxims. First we would ask, is it to the glory of God that we slight opportunities to inform ourselves as to what we should eat and drink in order to promote health and energy? Is willful ignorance to the glory of God? Does it honor the Great Maker of heaven and earth that we pay no attention to the organic laws which he has established in this physical world? “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof,” but in it he has allowed us an existence. If you were taken into some kind man’s house and there graciously fed and clothed and supplied with all needed comforts, would it not be your duty, and a proper expression of your gratitude, to inform yourself with regard to the laws your benefactor has seen fit to enact for the good order and welfare of all that are in his house? Yea, would it not be a brutish stupidity that would make no effort to acquire a knowledge of the wholesome laws governing that house, and if actually understood and yet disregarded, would not this be intolerable impudence? Well here we are bred, fed, and clothed in our Creator’s house, and depending on the owner for every breath we draw, and shall we choose to remain ignorant of his will, as indicated in his fixed laws in the realm of nature? Or wherein the knowledge of those laws have been forced upon our apprehension by past experiences and observation, do we yet honor God in their reckless disregard? The almighty God, by his Spirit, twenty years ago, very forcibly impressed us, as we have in the past informed you, of the duty of learning and conforming to the natural laws of health. To a great extent we did so and reaped much physical improvement, which was all to the glory of God, enabling us to do much more in his vineyard. But last winter the Lord convicted me with the duty of still more closely adhering to health and life promoting and preserving habits. We announced the same. But not long ago a brother writes that the Spirit had showed him that our afflictions resulted from our precautions to preserve our health, which led to our speaking of the kind of food we should furnish our stomach. Now we testify that the Spirit of God requires us to know and apply, so far as it is possible, the natural laws for our physical good. Did the same Spirit teach our brother that this is wrong, and had offended God, and had entailed suffering upon our body as a mark of his displeasure? Nay, these opposite conclusions were not the dictation of the same Spirit. One therefore must have been a wrong counselor. Which was it? One taught we should know and obey the laws of our physical constitution, the other that we should not discriminate between food that is nourishing, and that which is a clog to life’s forces; but only trust God. Which leading is to the glory of God? That which would appropriate the best food in our reach, and then trust God for all; or that which either ignorantly or knowingly neglects to provide these bodies with the proper diet, and we either suffer, or requires God to work a miracle three times a day in removing deleterious elements out of the contents of the stomach, and instead supply it with the nutritive elements it does not naturally contain, and which the system needs? We know that God can do all that. Through the word of God and prayer, he can sanctify naturally bad food and make it nourishing. But is it to the glory of God that we should neglect the good and eat the bad, that we may thus have occasion to invoke daily miracles? Shall we sin physically, that miracle grace may abound? God forbid. God deliver people from fanaticism. Neither ignorance, nor stupid disregard for what we may know in matters of health and strength promotion is to the glory of God.

“Whether therefore ye eat or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”

Is it to the glory of God that men and women sin against their bodies, and shorten their life? No.

Is it to the glory of God that they never look into the real wants of the physical frame, nor study the analysis of the food they eat, but keep on in the rut their father, and. mother, and grandparents happened to follow, and consequently be a weak and puny race, diseased in body, stupid in mind and dwarfed in spiritual energy, and unable to go forth in the worship and service of God? No.

Is it to the glory of God that you let perverted appetite govern instead of reason and intelligence? No.

Is it to the glory of God that you drift into, and continue in the abominable habit of piling salt, pepper, spices, vinegar and pepper sauce upon your victuals, and that of your children, making them indigestible, creating fever, and restlessness in the system, inviting dyspepsia, and giving a powerful impetus toward something stronger in the line of tobacco, beer and whiskey, and drunkenness? No.

Is it to the glory of God that our boasted civilization enslaves our women to cook, stew, fry, roast, toast, and bake a dozen different kinds of victuals to gratify an ungodly perverted appetite, derange the stomach, and engender disease, much of it not being suited to the human system, and also because so many kinds induce over eating? No. This is another abomination in the sight of God. The apostle says, “I keep under my body.” This is the true life of man, not only of the Christian, but of the human kind. It means that all our tastes, likes and dislikes, are brought under the control of our enlightened minds, that we inform ourselves as to what kind of food the human system needs, and then like and eat it, because reason is on the throne and so orders it. But when the body keeps under the man, the rampant and subverted appetites govern the intellect; and clamor for their indulgence regardless of their own health and the labor of the cooks, then one man wants this, another that, a third still another dish, and each must have four or five kinds to suit the mind of the flesh and the devil, and so the poor cook must mix and bake her lard and dough, and fix up as many dishes as can find place on the table, and more too, so that when the fashion-eaters run through one line of stomach groaners, the plates are removed to make place for another; so when all is prepared and brought out to feed — not nature’s demands, for they are few and simple — but feed a blind, grumbling, restless fashionable appetite devil, that should be cast out, then we say the next task is to gather up about ten pieces for each eater, wash, wipe and replace them, and when this is through, it will be time to begin devising, preparing, mixing and stewing for the next laborious round of feeding appetites instead of men. And thus it is that life is drudged away, and the enslaved female has no time to refresh her mind with good reading, nor even to serve God. O may the Lord work a reform, that will emancipate this damnable slavery! Let it begin with the saints. You women help it along. Cook up one good healthy article of food, and plenty of it, and set on the table with bread, we mean real bread, with all the parts of the wheat, butter and water, and some fruit if you have it. Do not have meat, potatoes, rice and oatmeal, when the latter is far better than the four, and requires less than one fourth the labor. Of course change off from one meal to another. If you are cooking for God’s children, they will relish one dish, and feel so much better that they will soon learn to thank God and you, that you did not keep on in the devilish ruts we got into while in the devil’s kingdom. It is often the case that the eaters would cheerfully reform, but the poor cook is a little nervous, and imagines she must serve up all the usual line of digestibles and indigestibles, that was necessary to keep peace when the devil reigned and there was no peace; and so she makes herself a slave. O that I knew where there was one table on earth that is spread to meet sanctified nature’s wants, and no more! Where the wise and happy people cook and eat and drink, and whatsoever they do, do all to the glory of God. We stop here, but are not through yet, more anon.

(Continued from first page.)

and believes that Christ was a Scientist. Spiritualism believes Christ was a Spiritualist. Unitarianism believes he was a Unitarian and so does every faction and sect from the Nicene creed down to the youngest born religious prostitute. All of them claim Christ for their standard and bring him down to a level with their belief. Every professor who sanctions a human creed whether written or verbal, expressed or understood, dares not say any thing against the evils of divisions, for in judging others they are guilty themselves and shall not escape the judgments of God. — Rom. 2:3. If we say we have nothing but Christ for our creed, as the Christian Alliance does, then we are under obligations to obey all that Christ commanded which means obedience to the entire word. This the Alliance, nor any other human creed, does not do. We cannot take Christ without obedience to him and the Bible. If we take all of the Bible we must cry aloud against all human creeds and religions. To keep still about those abominations virtually sanctions them. This is very pleasing to the carnal mind, but not to God. If we sanction one of them, we say they are all right and only differ in the non-essentials. This again is very pleasing to the carnal mind, for the more non-essentials it could find the easier would be the cross of Christ. But the Bible has no non-essentials. The carnal mind has many of them in the various human creeds, but God has none in the Divine Creed. A very plausible plea for the creeds is that they are suited to all classes. If one does not suit some, then they can make their choice from some other. Just as different families have different rules, so different denominations have different creeds. Well that is a truth beyond all question that every family has different rules, but how many families has God. If we believe the Bible, we must believe that he has but one family. — Eph. 3:15. 1 Jno. 3:10. There are two families of children mentioned in the Bible; namely, the children of God, and the children of the devil. The devil has many different creeds to suit his different children of different dispositions, but God has only one glorious Divine Creed for his one divine family of one divine nature. Every child of this family is born into the family and name by the new birth, and it is just as natural for that child to desire the Divine Creed, and nothing else, as it is natural for a new born babe to desire the milk from its mother’s breast.

Some poor souls say they were born of something else than being born of God. One man said that the M. E. church was his mother. Well of course then he could not be born of God, and therefore he could relish the M. E. creed milk better than the sincere milk of the word. There are thousands of such sickly sham conversions all over the land, who seem to flourish upon sectarian food because that is adopted to their nature, being carnal. But when the pure milk of the word is offered them they have no relish for it. Others who have once been born of God have been denied the pure milk, and fed upon milk drawn from sour, diseased, polluted sectarian bottles, and their digestive organs so weakened that they cannot assimilate the pure word, and sure death is their doom.

Now every honest person must acknowledge that no human creed can save a soul. Well, if it cannot save and is no other use according to the Bible then what good does it do? If it does no good then does it do harm? The answer must be yes. Creeds divide professors, and make them believe they are safe. While they say that the creed cannot save them, yet they risk their safety upon it because their forefathers believed it. They say they cannot take time to investigate the truth for themselves and therefore are willing to depend upon the judgment of those of other ages, who have the truth all parcelled and packaged off into logical propositions and for convenience all bound up into a book. This will not do. No one can afford to risk such an important matter upon the judgment of others. We are individually responsible and cannot throw this responsibility off upon some one else. Whether it is our forefathers or the theologians of the nineteenth century. The creed cursed world is inducing souls to do so, and thousands will wake up in eternity deceived by having placed their hopes upon the Thirty-nine Articles of Faith, or the Westminster Confession, or some later systematized formulary which promised safety to all who would adopt them. No wonder, and yet it is a wonder, that revision of creeds is among the current news of the age. Men should have known better centuries ago than blindly accept such foolishness, and yet it is a wonder that there is spirituality enough left in those dead institutions to even feel the need of something else. Possibly the need will be gratified by propositions and amendments still more agreeable to the carnal mind thus stupifying the consciences and making them feel more secure in the fact of having a revised creed. So long as men and women have the carnal mind they will not be satisfied to take the Bible and obey it. Some who have been sanctified, have suffered themselves to be bound by creeds afterwards, and thus have lost their liberty. One has said that we must have something else to agree upon, for people will not all agree upon the Bible. No wonder they will not, so long as this Sela- hammahlekoth is in the way. If they would agree with God, they would agree with all his people, and then there would be perfect fellowship one with another upon the Bible, the whole Bible and nothing but the Bible. Thank God for the Bible, the Divine Creed.

TESTIMONIES.

To all the Saints and others that may read this: Some eighteen years ago I was converted in the Albright sect; went from there to the M. E. sect, and remained with them until six years ago last March. I was ordained by a band of holiness people working in Central Illinois. In the mean time I had been in various official positions in the sects, but always realizing that there was a shortage in my soul. Just prior to the date mentioned above, it pleased the Lord to give me a wonderful experience in sanctifying my soul, body and spirit, and calling me to the ministry, and giving me a gift of faith to pray for the sick. For six months I traveled independent of every thing save the power of God in my soul. Then came the trial that drove me from the field. This trial came through false brethren professing holiness and from other sources not to be mentioned just now. All in all, they were sufficient to accomplish the desire of the enemy of all good. Directly I took a position as class leader in the U. B. sect, from that into the conference to preaching. The dignitaries thought repentance, justification, adoption, sanctification and faith healing, with a smart sprinkling of the present truth and direct revelation from the Lord was just a little too much for these people. So I modified down just a little, and from that day to this present moment I have not had the spirit of the Lord on me in such power as before. I have seen in a vision in the last two years the condition of the lost in eternity with all the honor the mind is able to conceive, with the addition of the spiritual insight into the future. And in this vision some one seemed to say. Do you see any injustice in your being sent here if you continue holding the truth and hiding the light you have got? And I answered in all the candor of my soul. No, thy righteous laws approve it well. Previous to this vision for about ten days I had been engaged in a protracted meeting that continued one day after the night of the vision, I was sleeping with a sect preacher that was in charge of the meeting. The Lord had shown me that there could be nothing done unless the whole truth was given. That the preacher would not allow, and I was too cowardly to face the storm that would follow the truth. But this was not to stop here. The Lord put it on me to give my experience in the day meeting the following day, and tell them of the vision, but I fought against the Spirit until my body was all of a quiver with the power of God. Then came the torments of the lost in all of its hidiousness, with the knowledge that this was the time for me to settle my doom for eternity. Glory to God! I had strength enough to get on my feet, and I obeyed the dictates of the Spirit. The people said I was crazy, demented, etc., but the Spirit had the right of way. The meeting broke up immediately after.

About the time the above was taking place the Trumpet fell in my possession and through its influence I am to day out of all sect bonds. But there is a leanness in my soul that is not pleasant. Just why this should be written I do not know, but probably some other poor soul is situated on the sam ..roate that I have traveled for the past six years. If this should be read by any one that the Lord has called to the ministry and you are shirking duty, take warning in time and escape the punishment that follows in the wake of lack in duty. Now may the spirit of Elijah’s God get hold of every diligent minister that reads these lines.

I remain your most unworthy brother.

DEAR READERS OF THE TRUMPET: Once more through the goodness of God, I have the privilige of writing my testimony to the Trumpet. I just want to say a few words in regard to what the Lord has done for me. I do know that I love the Lord. I have his Holy Spirit within bearing witness to me that I do love the Lord. I know that I have passed from death unto life because I love all of God’s people. I know that I have been transformed out of darkness into his marvelous light. I am willing to let God be true and every man a liar. I am not of the world because the world is in sin and darkness, and I am not in sin and wickedness because I follow the footprints of Jesus who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth. God has said. Be ye holy, so to do what he says to do we must be holy. I thank God that I am living in obedience to this command. By the grace of God I am going to live right in this world and then when the Lord the righteous judge shall appear I will appear with him in glory. Dear brethren, I need your prayers.

Your brother saved now,

Albert M. Johnson.
