The Holy Bride of Jesus.

—:o:—

In the Church of Jesus only,
She’s of Heavenly origin,
All that’s saved and tell the story,
Constitute His Body one.

Cho: – In Her walks the holy people,
And Her walls are glory bright,
On the arm of Her Beloved
Forth She came in dazzling light.

See the Bride in Heaven’s beauty,
With Her spotless robe of white,
She is marching on with victory,
In Jehovah’s wondrous might.

Yes the Church, the Bride of Jesus,
Born of God the Holy One,
Down from Him and out of Heaven,
She, the loving Bride has come.

Holy angels now are singing
Victory! Victory!! through the blood;
Christ the Lord is sweetly reigning,
Glory, glory be to God!

How the earth in fear is trembling,
As the ransomed hosts increase;
And Her songs like thunder rolling,
Sounds aloud Her glorious peace

THE CRYING OF THE CHILDREN.

—:o:—

MRS. Browning has written a very beautiful and touching poem, en title “The crying of the children,” in which she vividly portrays the condition of the children of the large cities in England and Scotland at that lime; and how badly they were neglected, being brought up in ignorance, without a knowledge of God; deprived of all the pleasures and comforts of home, knowing nothing outside of the noise and din of machinery in the factories where they were obliged to work (or imprisoned we might say) from early childhood. And as they toiled day after day from early morn until late at night, then as they lay weary and. moaning upon their bed, breathed the only prayer they knew, which was “Our Father;” and wondered if God could hear their prayer while the angels were always singing so. We cannot well refrain from quoting one stanza which vividly brings before our minds the deplorable situation of these little ones and their deep feelings of remorse.

“Now tell the poor young children, O my brothers,
To look up to Him, and pray;
So the blessed One who blesses all the others
Will bless them another day.
They answer, ”Who is God that He should hear us
While the rushing of the iron wheels is stirred?
When we sob aloud, the human creatures near us
Pass by, hearing not, or answer not a word;
And we hear not (for the wheels in their resounding)
Strangers speaking at the door.
Is it likely God, with angels singing round him,
Hears our weeping any more?”

So it is in this enlightened age of the world while the blessed evening light is breaking forth in all its splendor and we have the kingdom of God within us, yet we hear the “crying of the children,” for lite cloud is hovering o’er them still, and the vale of darkness is yet unmoved. We hear their moaning from the humblest cottage to the richest, mansion in the land; from the drunkards hovel to the palace of the kings. And when told “to look up to Him and pray” we hear them say: who is God that He should condescend to hear us while older ones are crowding and filling up the way. We are too young and our minds too weak to understand the words that older ones do, and thus are we thrust aside as worthies? creatures of the earth.

Thus have we been neglected, and never learned the way to God, and that is why you hear our weeping. Our grief is more than we can bear. And they ask us: Is it any wonder that we grow hard in sin as the years roll by? We have heard of the blessed Lord, but our sinful natures turn us from His ways of peace when we, are so neglected. We have no schools with holy teachers to tell the story of the cross in plain and simple words such as we can understand; for we would gladly heed the calling if we only knew the way. We know not how to pray; we know not what to say, because no one has ever taught us; and do you think that God hears our weeping and sees us in our distress? If so, why does he not send His grown up children to the way. Now could we but know the sentiments of the children, we no doubt would hear words of similar expression from them all over the land, while they go about weeping and moaning in their distress on account of spiritual poverty. The Savior saw the necessity of calling them together and He said: “Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not for such is the kingdom of Heaven.” The children of to-day are too much neglected. They are wandering in sin without the proper care and it is no wonder that our land is flooded with paupers, infidels and workers against the cause of Christ. Oh, my brothers and sisters you are held responsible before God for these things. O God forgive the people for this sad neglect, and awaken them to a sense of duty; arouse them from this morbid state that the precious little ones may be brought up in the ways of Thy truth. Some say we take our children with us to Church and see that they keep quiet no difference if the sermon is a long one, and that is all that is necessary. We have also heard ministers from the pulpit proclaim against schools for children. O may God deliver such ones from such erroneous doctrine and belief. Now if they had strong and mature minds and were capable of grasping all the ideas and thoughts, and making the application to all the figures of speech that the minister, presents during his long discourse, then your arguments might do. But their minds are too young and weak to understand such thoughts and make appliances to the figures of speech, although they may seem very plain and simple to us. They cannot comprehend these things. And now it is high time that you who are older arouse yourselves from this deep sleep of neglect, and see that the children have schools with holy teachers to instruct them, teachers full of the fire of the Spirit who are capable of presenting the ways of truth in a clear light, and in plain simple words that these little ones may see the beauties of holiness. How dear ones, see to those things at once, for fear the wrath of God corns upon you and you lose your own souls on account of this neglect. For the Word says: “If the watchman see the Sword come and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood shall I require at the watchman’s hand. So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the Word at my mouth, and warn them from me.” You have heard the voice of the “cry of the children;” you have seen them in their deplorable condition and have seen the sword coming upon them; Every one of you who are saved are God’s watchman. O may your responsibilities be so deeply felt that you will speedily fly to the post of duty that their blood will not be required at your hands in the great day of judgment. O do not pass these things by as the idle wind, for you are held responsible before God, not only for your own children, but for those around you. Send forth a pervading influence backed up by the power and Spirit of God; such as will penetrate the hearts of every child and youth in the community in which you live. Open up the batteries against the bulwarks of sin; send out the proclamation, and call for volunteers; point to Jesus as the captain and leader of the van, and the approaching troops of little ones will rally round the banner and fight the battles of the Lord. And their sorrow will be changed to gladness as they go home with a shout of victory in their souls.

THE LEAVEN IN THE MEAL.

—:o:—

Another parable spake He unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. — Matt. 13:03.

LEAVEN is generally used in the Scripture to mean something bad. Thus our Lord bade his disciples beware of the Pharisees and Sadducees, meaning their wrong teaching; and St. Paul wrote to the Corinthians that they would purge out the old leaven, and keep the feast, “not with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with “the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.”

Yet leaven necessarily does not mean what is what is bad; but rather any thing, whether bad or good, which is of such a nature as to spread itself through what it is mixed with. Thus evil teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees was likely to spread like leaven through the people; and in like manner the sin which the Corinthians allowed in one of their number, and which thus became mixed up with the ordinances of religion, and with their partaking of the Lord’s Supper itself, would, if not checked, spread through and corrupt the whole Church. But in this parable the same figure is used in a good sense. It means here the Gospel, for our Lord said, “The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven.” As leaven spreads through the meal into which it is put, so would the Gospel spread through the world. Such was the nature of the kingdom of heaven, the Gospel dispensation upon earth.

The general lesson, therefore, of this parable is the same as that of the parable of the grain of mustard seed, which goes just before it. But our blessed Lord never spoke needlessly. If He taught the same truth in different ways, and by different figures, it was that the truth might be set forth in all its various aspects, and thus a fuller and clearer knowledge of it might be gained. Each parable, however like it may seem to others, carries its own peculiar lesson. If it sets forth the same truth it puts it in a new light. “The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took.” The Gospel is not left to make its own way in the world, without the use of means. Human instruments are employed—preachers, teachers, writers, workers of various kinds. The woman took the leaven and mixed it in the meal; and in like manner the servants of God take the Gospel and strive to spread it through the world. Such is God’s gracious plan, such is “the kingdom of heaven.” It is like, not merely to leaven, but to “leaven which a woman took.” Perhaps a woman is mentioned rather than a man only because this woman’s work; but it may be that there is a further meaning. In the parable of the mustard seed a man was the worker, here it is a woman. Perhaps we are meant to learn (and certainly it is the case) that in spreading the Gospel there is work for women as well as for men. We have only to read St. Paul’s epistles to see how women were made use of in the early Church, and in our own time women hold a most important place in the work of the Gospel. It is a distinct place from that of man. This again is clearly to be gathered from writings of St. Paul. And on no account must women overstep the bounds which Scripture has set to her work. Man has his work, and woman has her work. The fact of the two being mentioned in different parables seems to draw special attention to this. But every man and every woman to whom the Gospel has come in power, is called to use every means and every opportunity for extending it to others. We are all to be sowers of the seed or mixers of the leaven. Not one of us should be idle, not one should be living without an influence for good..

The woman hid the leaven in three measures of meal, that is, mixed it with it. There seems no reason for giving any meaning to the number three beyond this, that the leaven was small in quantity compared with the meal. This little quantity of leaven was mixed with a much larger quantify of meal. And yet the whole three measures were leavened. So the Gospel, beginning in a small and humble way, has spread already through a great part of the world, and is to spread yet farther, even till it reaches every-where. What seemed to the eye of man very weak, has proved to be of mighty power. So again, one who is trying in any way to spread the truth may seem perhaps very weak. In ourselves we all are weak, and ought to feel ourselves so: “Who is sufficient, for these things?” But some seem even weaker than others. Their sphere is narrow; their abilities humble their opportunities few; their knowledge, boldness, and influence small. And deep humility, and perhaps also a desponding spirit, makes them perhaps take even too low a view of the means and talents which God has given them. But grant these to be as low and poor as they esteem them, yet the Gospel which they desire to spread is “the power of God unto salvation,” and the strength in which they labor is not their own, but His.

Small are the means which they employ, little is it that they can do, like the morsel of leaven which the woman took and hid in the meal; yet who can tell how great an effect may follow! A word spoken for Christ, the simple reading of a few versos to a sick person, in much fear and weakness perhaps, yet in a spirit of prayer and faith — how mighty the change which this may work! And if one heart be turned to God, and one person brought under the power of the truth, that person himself becomes a fresh instrument for spreading it to others, and those others in their turn will spread it farther; and all from that little beginning, that one humble instrument. Three measures of meal were leavened by one morsel of leaven; numbers yet unborn may be brought to God and to happiness through the humble efforts of some one man or woman.

There is something very peculiar in the nature of leaven; it goes through all that it is mixed with, and makes a complete change in the whole mass. The Gospel is like it in this. Wherever it goes, it makes a change; and that, not only in those who truly receive it, but also in society in general. In a Christian country there may be many people ignorant of God, sunk in vice, and no better than heathen in character; yet, taken as a whole, how different is a Christian land from a heathen land! The influence of the Gospel is felt throughout the country. It has not changed every heart; far from it: but the general tone and character of the people is the better for the Gospel. It is so in our own country. There is much ungodliness among us; yet how different would be our State without the leaven of the Gospel It was so in the time of the Apostles, in whatever country the Gospel was preached. It is so still in those heathen lands to which the Gospel is carried by missionaries. There are many drawbacks and many disappointments in missionary work; but the Gospel is not without its effect; and thus we are encouraged to hope and pray for a greater effect still.

But this leavening influence is yet more striking in the case of those who truly receive the Gospel into the heart. “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” When the kingdom of heaven is established in the heart the whole character is changed. For the Gospel is not a mere set of doctrines or opinions, but a lite-giving principle, “the power of God unto salvation.” When truly received it gives new thoughts and feelings, new hopes and desires, a new ground of trust, a new source of happiness, new and all-pervading principles of action. Every day, and in all his conduct, the Christian is influenced by the Gospel; there is a holy consistency in his life. Such is the influence of the Gospel when it does its full work in the heart; and such it is in a measure in every heart that has received it. But alas for human frailty and imperfection! The Gospel in itself is like leaven, but in its practical effects it is greatly hindered by man’s infirmity and inconsistency, by the sin that still cleaves even to the regenerate heart, and by the temptations and difficulties that beset us from without. The leaven pervades the meal without difficulty or hindrance by the mere force of its nature; the Gospel leaven, on the contrary, meets with much to hinder its effect even in the heart that is under its influence. We must watch and pray. We must watch diligently against all within us or around us that would hinder the Gospel; we must earnestly pray for the grace and help of God’s Holy Spirit.

Much of the leavening effect of the Gospel in the world depends on the consistent Jives of Christians. A holy and consistent course may do untold good. For the most powerful preaching is that of the life; and when it is seen that the Christian’s whole character and conduct are under the rule of the Gospel, a feeling of inspect at least will be produced for religion, and perhaps much more. Let us never forget that each of us has an influence on those around us; and let us seek that our influence may be all for good, and (hat thus we may be doing our part in extending the kingdom of Heaven upon earth.

Sel.

NOTE.

The above is a subject that should interest every child of God; and the writer has given us many good thoughts, but we feel he has not gone far enough where he speaks of the sin that still cleaves to the regenerate heart. We know that there is the inbred sin that dwells in the heart after conversion, and this is the sin that Paul speaks of which doth so easily beset us; and he says that we should lay that aside that we may run the race with patience that is set before us, looking unto Jesus who is the author and finisher of our faith. And we are also persuaded that the good work that Jesus has begun in us He is able to finish and to destroy in our hearts all the evil that the devil has placed there and which we have inherited through the fall of Adam. For He says: “Every plant which my Heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up.” And in John 15:2, lie says : “Every branch that beareth not fruit He taketh away; and every branch that beareth fruit He purgeth it that it may bring forth more fruit.” When we first come to Christ we are dead in trespasses and sin, and we become alive in Christ by being born of the Spirit. Then we present our bodies a living sacrifice, wholly and acceptable unto God. And we are commanded to be not conformed to the world, but to be transformed by the renewing of your mind that ye may prove what is that good and perfect and accept table will of God. “And this is the will of God even our sanctification, that we should know how to possess our vessel in sanctification and honor.” Then will you be prepared for every good work — whatever the Lord has for you to do, and then the leaven or the good seed which is the Gospel will not be hindered from doing its work. Therefore let us strive to abide in the calling where unto we are called, and earnestly perform the work which is given us to do, that we may be pure from the blood of all men.

Dear Brethren in Christ: — May God bless and keep you. I have been sending all my GOSPEL TRUMPETS to friends and relatives and old acquaintances for the last year, or since I came into this great light and freed from sectism, although some rejecting the truth and even some sending back the TRUMPET and wrote on the wrapper not called “for — &c. Yet I did not cease from exhorting in the name of Christ and fried to point out the way so clear that any way-faring man could see it — and I feel rejoiced to hear and read letters where some of my relatives are receiving the truth. I just received one letter from Bro. Isaac Prill from Chapman, Snyder Co. Pa., stating that he loves to read the GOSPEL TRUMPET and that the Brethren speak to its praise for the truth it taught — and that a number of them cut loose from sect’s and have an independent or union prayer meeting, and that life and power is among them when they meet. He says that the U. B’s are not what they used to be years ago, that abort all they are after is money, and that the preacher confessed that they are behind the limes in teaching holiness. He says fie will do all in His power to help in this good work for God. May the Lord open the way that some one of God’s ministers may be directed to that. locality to preach the truth and teach pure holiness. May God use every reader as an instrument in sending out papers and tracts to spread the truth unto every nation and tongue. May God bless all the saints and keep them saved is my prayer. I am saved by grace, and freed from all its and isms.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

—:o:—

Beaver Dam, Ind.

I am happy to tell all the saints of God that the Grove meeting held near Melrose O, was a grand one, and a success for God and the salvation of many poor souls that the devil had bound by sin. Bro. Kilpatrick and I were met at the station by dear Bro. Ramsey who conveyed us to his home, thence to the grove, where we began meeting in the name of the Lord. Many dear saints from a distance were with us to help praise God for His salvation that has set our souls at liberty from all the works of the devil. In every meeting after the first night, souls would fall down before God for salvation. Saturday night we had meeting at Bro. D. Smith’s, where God did work mightily in saving poor souls. Two young men gave their hearts to God, and were made happy; for the Son had made them free from their sins. Some that once had the “Pearl of great price, but had lost it, came back to the Lord, and afterward testified that they had no peace in their hearts since they left the family of God.

Well, God hath said “There is no peace to the wicked.” I do pray God that their sad experience in the past will at all times help them to resist the devil when tempted of Him. In all that came to the Altar for both justification and sanctification, were about 25 souls.

We left the dear saints at that place full of the fire. Sunday, the last day, we had a mast glorious time. The meeting lasted all day, with a short intermission for lunch at noon. In the after-noon the glory of God so filled all our hearts with joy that many shouted, leaped and praised the Lord in the highest. The meeting only lasted four days, but God did make it sweet to our souls.

Monday, August 1st, 13 of us took train at Melrose for Payne, where we held meeting that night at Bro. Wm. L. Kilpatrick’s. There the dear Lord did meet with us in power. Praise His holy name forever and ever! At about the close of the meeting three came to the mercy seat, and found the desire of their hearts. And after the meeting was dismissed a dear young Bro. who was not made complete in all the will of God, knelt down and wanted us to pray for him, which we did, and God Italy sanctified his soul. One of the four that consecrated themselves to God was the father of our dear Bro. J. N. Howard. O how it did Ml our heart with holy joy, to see him get relief in his soul, for he did pray mightily to God for pardon. God bless and fully sanctify him ere long.

Aug. the 2nd, Bro’s. Kilpatrick, Ealey, and myself left Payne, Ohio, for the Camp Meeting near Beaver Dam, Ind. Were met by dear Bro. Bear, who conveyed us to his home where we stopped all night. In the morning the dear Bro. brought us to the grove, where the saints were busy getting ready for the worship of God, and to labor for the salvation of souls.

Your Bro, saved by the blood and the Spirit, and in the “Body of Christ.”

Samuel.

THE ST JAMES MO. CAMP MEETING.

_____

THE night following our last report, which was from St Louis Mo., we landed at St James, at 12 30. The Lord directed us to a friendly inn, where we rested until the morning. As we sat around the breakfast table our grateful hearts flowed out in our sweet little table thanksgiving song. The Lord wonderfully blessed that sweet offering of praise. It rang out and greeted the ears of all in hearing as the music of Heaven. After meal, requests soon came in for songs. The Holy Spirit gloriously inspired our voices to sing His praises. Many people soon collected in front of the room, and soon came in. After a few hymns we had family worship. We invited all that would to come in and bow with us in prayer. Some did so. The Lord blessed our souls. Praise His name! Soon Bro. J. H. Morrison came into town, and seeing the throng in front of the hotel asked the cause, and was told, that “your people have come to town.” He came into the waiting room and introduced himself, and the Spirit of God gave us a joyful greeting. Sinners looked on with wonder and amazement, and were led to say, “These are truly the real children of God, and this is the right way,” according to the words of our Savior; “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples if ye have love one for another.” Many seemed quite serious. Had we tried to respond to the requests of the people we should have kept singing all day without cessation. The people desired Bro. Morrison to keep us right there, and have a meeting that night in town, saying they would see that all our expenses then should be paid. The Landlady and family were also very anxious we should stay, and treated us with much kindness. The Lord reward them. The M. E. preacher also came to see what this pentecost fire was that had come to town. When asked if we could have their meeting house that night, he replied that he was going to “begin a protracted meeting to-night.” Suddenly the preacher concludes, a protracted meeting was needed in his charge. Who ever heard of a fat lazy M. E. priest commencing protracted meeting in the mouth of July, in the longitude or central Mo? Especially since that sect has gone, spiritually, to the Frigid Zone, where, as their oldest living Bishop says, “Spirituality is frozen to death.” Quite a capacious hall was procured and well filled, and we enjoyed preaching the precious Gospel of God to the people. About all received the Word. The M. E. meeting consisted in three or four women, and was not further protracted.

The day of our arrival here came, also dear Bro. C. C. Night from Fulton Ill, with tent and equipment’s to accompany us on our western campaign. Praise the Lord, he is full of faith and the Holy Ghost, and is a good help in the work.

The next day we moved out to the camp ground, which is about ten miles from St James, and near the Merrimac River. Hers we met our dearly beloved Bro. Cole, who spent a year with us in Mich, a few years ago. Also his Sister Mary a chosen and anointed instrument of God to preach and testify the Gospel of the grace of God. Also dear Bro. J. P. Baily and companion who we ad much love in the Spirit, but never saw before in the flesh. Also, Bro’s Lewis, Rhodes, and others whose names are in the hook of life, and who are placed in the Body as messengers of the Gospel. Dear Brother Taytor, an evangelist of the Lord, who has been much used in spreading holiness in this State, came to the meeting, having been for some time much afflicted in. body with apparent consumption. He seemed to enjoy the Lord in his affliction. The evening before he loft the camp, hands were laid upon him, also the anointing oil was applied, and prayer offered for his healing, and we do most earnestly hope God will show His power in his restoration of health.

We met also a much larger host of saints than we had expected to find in this country. Praise God for this! But oh how soon we saw and felt that satan, the deceiver had cast a dread fill network of deception over them, or nearly all of them. “Unseemly,” and even hideous operations and contortions were carried on, and called the manifestations of the Spirit and power of God. We began at once to rebuke it in the name of the Lord Jesus. God gloriously blessed our souls in preaching His Word, and assured us that He had much people there who were honest and sincere at heart, and who would he delivered by the presentation of His Word. The supposed gift of tongues was alarmingly increasing, indian war dancing, etc, had turned the Church of God into something quite different, a disgusting maze of confusion. We were helped of God in teaching them “How they ought to behave themselves in the house of God, which is, the Church of the Living God.”

A terrible nervous jerking had seized upon many in the meetings, which in some cases resembled much the St Vitis dance. We speak of these things in order give the saints of God everywhere the benefit of what these dear souls have learned in the dear school of experience. We had never seen such manifestation except in persons possessed with devils, and yet the Spirit of God showed us these were not so possessed, but were still owned of the Lord. We read 1 Cor. 12: 13, 14, showed the beautiful harmony of the Church under the control of the Spirit of God, that. “Love does not behave itself unseemly.” That the gift of tongues was not of general usefulness, was a sign to the Jews, not edifying to the Church, other gifts were in be sought in preference, and that, unless he, or some out else interpret, the person having the gift should keep silent, or speak to himself; that “five words with the understanding is better than ten thousand in an unknown tongue.” That spasmodic jerking was not mentioned in the Bible as a manifestation of God’s Spirit, but is ascribed to a malignant spirit. We renounced that working as of the devil. It seems that one brother who had been powerfully charged by the Holy Spirit, became puffed up, which gave place to this satanic working. Then satan made it the standard of being fillet! with the Spirit, and power of God; so many earnestly prayed for it. They forgot that the Holy Spirit only makes intercession for us according to the will of God,” and whatsoever you pray for outside the will of God must be suggested by some other spirit. And as God has not promised to answer it, the devil steps in and answers if. And now, since delivered the dear souls see and confess that the incoming of this power dimmed their faith, joy, and peace. If was nothing less than satan touching, and playing upon their nerves, and upon their imaginations. But their motives having been good, namely to seek the real power of God, their consciences were not defiled, at least with most of them. But some were much blinded, and puffed up of the devil. Satan had free access to their minds tinder the cloak of the Spirit, of God. Those who were not crippled by the foolish jerking of the devil, were judged by the devil, and made believe they did not have the Spirit of God because they did not jerk. Thus all were under depression, and more or less bewildered. O how our souls were saddened at the sight. O dear saints of God everywhere, do not ascribe to the Spirit of God, ludicrous and unbecoming conduct. Such as chattering like a coon, or harking like a dog, and all hideous looks.

Well, praise God, the Word of God was received, some at first resented, but God soon convicted them, and they became teachable. And nearly all the foolish stuff was rid out of the camp, after one discourse explaining and renouncing it. Intelligent sinners respected the truth of God that exposed the devil’s counterfeit and some who loved the true Church wept for joy to see the abomination put away. From that time God led one after another to confess that Spiritual joy, and true faith

Our little company is all well, saved and filled with power, and ready to work for God, fearless of men and devils. Glory to Jesus!

Battle Creek, Mich. Dear Brethren: — I praise the Lord this morning for the victory I have in my soul. This glorious Gospel shines brighter and brighter in my soul every day. The Lord has not only saved my soul, but He has healed my body of all disease. He has given me sufficient strength to clean house all day long; and when my labor is finished for the day I am as strong as when I began, so that I am ready for another days work. When the work is unusually hard for the day, and I am somewhat fatigued on my return home, I just, go to our Heavenly Father with perfect, confidence and ask Him to refresh me with His strengthening power, and He gives it to me for the next day. Praise His name forever! When the straw-berry season came on this year, I prayed to the Lord to send the buyers for I had a large quantity to dispose of; and He sent, the buyers faster than we could pick them. Praise the Lord for answering prayer: I feel the fire in my soul as I write it. All I have is on the altar. The debts which I accumulated in my sinful state hung heavily on my shoulders: but, since He saved and sanctified my soul, He has been wonderfully helping me to pay my debts. Praise His name for ever! And now my dear brethren and sisters, amidst it, all I have not forgotten to give to God to help support His Gospel. And I intend to give more as he increases my wealth. The TRUMPET OFFICE is greatly in need of money to pay off the debts, which have long been standing. Also to carry on the work of spreading the glorious Gospel truth through the TRUMPET to perishing souls who cannot be reached in any other way. When I see how little I have given and how little a great many give, it fills my heart, with a desire to write about giving. And when you pray dear ones far the Lord to send laborers into the field to work, pray that, He may open your hearts to give freely to them that they may be enabled to travel and spread the Gospel. For I know that there are those who are ready to go, but they have not means to go with. Oh this great important work which is so neglected among the saints. I feel the necessity of giving as I never have before. Dear brethren and sisters, is not all you have on the altar? Have you not promised Cod to use every thing to His glory? God says in His Word: “Freely ye have received freely give.” Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measure to you again. — Luke 6:38. He that gives let Him do it with simplicity. Rom. 12: 8. Every man according as he purposes in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly as of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. — 2 Cor. 9:7. Let all the saints take this subject to God in earnest prayer, that every one may act according to the teaching of His divine Word. For in the day of judgment we all will give an account of how we have used the Lord’s money.

Your sister saved by the blood of Jesus.

Hear Bro. Warner the Lord be with you, and bless you with all Spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus. Glory to God! I am fully saved. The meeting in La Grange Co. Ind. was a success. There were about 18 saved. Bless the Lord! Bro. J. Williams came through straight, but had an awful death to die. God gave us the victory at the little grove meeting in Darke Co., O, in spite of the devil and sectarians, who did they could to counteract the work of God. There were two converted and one sanctified. The Lord also gave us a glorious meeting South of Melrose, Ohio. Dear Bro. Speck was with us at that meeting. There were a goodly number saved, and the way opened to spread the glorious evening light. Glory to God in the highest! Peace on earth, good will to men.

Praise God! I am here to do what I can for God’s glory, and the good of my fellow beings in the Beaver Dam Camp-meeting, which commences to-day. We expect a glorious out-pouring of God’s Spirit, and an ingathering of souls into the garner of the Lord. Give our love to your dear little company of workers, and remember us and the Camp-meeting in your prayers. Amen! Yours in the patience and labor of the Lord,

Dear Saints of God: — I am saved and rejoicing in the Savior who has so graciously and tenderly dealt with my soul. I am not able to express the thankfulness I feel in my heart to God for what He has done for me. Praise His holy name! O how sweet to know that I have a friend in Jesus, and that lie provides all my needs, both spiritual and temporal. Glory to Jesus! The Lord is my strength and my redeemer, my all and in all. It is God that girds me with strength, and makes my way perfect — Psa. 18:32. “God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.” “Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.” Praise God! Truly “the Lord is the strength of my life;” and I feel determined to press forward in this holy war and win the prize that awaits all true Christians. O God help us to be valiant soldiers of the cross, and be found at our post continually. I am so glad that I have found salvation that satisfies my soul, and causes me to rise above this world and all trials. I praise God that have chosen the way of truth,” and by the grace of God I mean to continue in His way all the days of my life. I have given my life to Jesus and it is glorious to live for Him every day. O if all from the least to the greatest knew the Lord, how glorious it would be. I entreat all poor sinners to seek the Savior while He may be found. Oh flee to Jesus or destruction will be your awful doom.

Dear saints pray for me that I may keep hid away with Christ in God. Your sister sanctified wholly.

Dear Saints of the Living God – I feel it is the will of God that I should testify of His goodness to me. O I do praise the Lord with all my heart for ever saving me out of tins wicked world — for redeeming me from the powers of satan unto God, and translating me into the kingdom of His dear Son. And now I am a happy child of God, with a pure heart filled with the love of Jesus, and garments made white in His precious blood. O praise God! How I thank Him for the knowledge of the indwelling Spirit, the Comforter which He promised to send unto all who love and serve Him: and I feel that holy Comforter in my heart this morning, filling my soul with love and joy, and with gratitude to God who always causes us to triumph over all the works of the enemy. Thanks be unto God for the “unspeakable gift” of His Divine love which reigns in my heart. I am entirely given up to the will of God, ready and willing to do anything He may require of me. O how sweet it is to obey the loving voice of our Heavenly Father, and do His will from the heart. Truly “Obedience is better than sacrifice.”

“Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord. Blessed are they that keep His testimonies, and that seek Him with the whole heart. They also do no iniquity: they walk in His ways. Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently.” — Psalm 119:1-4.

Praise God for the privilege His true children have of meeting together in the name of Jesus, and worshiping Him in the Spirit. And what holy joy fills the hearts of the redeemed ones, when assembled in that One name, to pray, testify for Jesus, and sing the sweet songs of praise unto our God, even as He hath commanded. “I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.” — 1 Tim. 2:8.

“Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the Lord.” — Psalm 134:2.

“Sing unto the Lord, O ye saints of His, and give thanks at the remembrance of His Holiness.” — Psalm 30:4.

O what a happy company are the saints, purified by the cleansing blood of Christ, who died to redeem fallen man. O poor sinner, why will you not come to this loving, and compassionate Savior, and let Him raise you up out of the depths of sin, and make you one of His pure children, and give you a clean heart, filled with praises to God, who hath given His only begotten Son that you might have eternal life. O do not continue to reject the Savior; come to Him and accept His mercy which is ever extended unto you, or awful will be your doom through all eternity.

O dear saints, I am so glad that I came to Jesus when He called me. and gave my heart to Him. I know I am a child of God, fully given to His control, and He keeps me sweetly saved and trusting in Him continually. I am wholly sanctified to God by the Holy Spirit, and kept by His power. I desire an interest in the prayers of God’s little ones, that I may ever abide at the feet of Jesus, and be led by His Spirit. Your humble sister, in the love and faith of Jesus Christ.

Woodstock, Ont.

Dear Brethren: — I feel greatly impressed by the Holy Spirit to testify for Jesus, who has turned me from darkness to light, and from the power of satan unto God. Praise God, though the devil is going about as a roaring lion seeking to destroy God’s little ones, glory to God! I have continual victory through the Lord Jesus. I am free from sect babylon, and all her confusion. Praise God! About ten months ago, while under the doctor’s care, I became convicted of sin, and the good Lord showed me that I was traveling to eternity with an unsaved soul. The doctors gave me no hope, and I knew that I had been in open rebellion against God. I knew in the state I was in, that hell would be my doom. But praise God, this glorious passage of Scripture was for me “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1.

When I obeyed God the glory came, God also healed me of that awful disease, Consumption. Praise the Lord! “Who forgiveth all thine iniquities, who healeth all thy diseases.” — Psa. 103:3

“Himself took our infirmities, and bear our sicknesses.” — Matt. 8:17. “Who His own self bear our sins in His own body on the tree; that we being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness. By whose stripes ye were healed.” — 1 Peter 2:21.

Praise God for His healing and saving power! He also keeps His saints each day from all sin. Sect professors say we can not live without sin; but God says “He that sinneth is of the devil.” “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son cleanseth us from all sin.” — 1 John 1:7. That we should be holy, and without blame before Him in love. — Eph. 1:4. Be ye therefore perfect even as your Father which is in Heaven is perfect. —Matt. 5:42.

“Every one that is perfect shall be as his Master.” — Luke 6:40. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly: and I pray God your whole spirit, and soul, and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. — 1 Thess. 5:23. That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished Unto every good work. — 2 Tim. 3:17. But let patience have her perfect work; that ye may he perfect and entire, wanting nothing. – James 1:4.

Praise God for the truth, for the truth makes me free. Hallelujah! Amen!

Your free Bro., saved, sanctified, and under the blood.

Charlie Smith.

GRAND JUNCTION MICH.. AUG. 1ST.

Dear Brethren: — I praise the Lard for full salvation, and victory over all the works of the devil.

Dear Bro. Palmer and I have just returned from the grove meeting near Hamilton, Allegan Co. Mich. O how the Lord did bless us in coming together in this meeting. It lasted five days during which time the Lord did wonderfully help us to preach the everlasting Gospel. Souls were saved and sanctified at nearly every meeting. Oh praise the Lord for His mighty saving power. Services commenced on Wednesday, and during the meeting there were thirty-five persons presented themselves at the altar of whom eighteen were converted and thirteen sanctified, and a number of persons healed by the laying on of hands in the name of the Holy Child Jesus. Bro. Lamas was ordained ruling Elder of the Church at, Hamilton. The meeting in the grove closed on Sunday morning, after which we went to the water where Bro. Palmer baptized nine of God’s little ones. In the evening we held services in the hall. Daring the entire meeting there was a good attendance and a deep interest expressed by Use people in hearing the truth Oh praise the Lord! Verily He does all things well. We left the Church at Hamilton in good condition, also the Church at Diamond Springs. May the Lord ever Keep them faithful. Amen!

Brethren pray for us that we be found faithful and humble, doing all the will of God. Your Brother saved, sanctified and kept by His power.

Henry O. Sharpnack.

Grand Junction, Mich.

Dear Brethren: — I praise God to-day that I am completely saved in Jesus Christ. I bless God at all limes, for this glorious light and salvation, which ennobles the thought, elevates the mind, and gives clear conception in duty. I thank God for the power and glory a humble, trusting, and believing soul may find in Christ. As to the power of God, we can have it according to our faith. “For I am the Lord, I change not.” It is to the glory of God, we can command the Son to stand still, Jordan’s waters to divide, enter the fiery furnace, change water In wine, or heal the sick and blind. Now if you say that the day of healing or miracles is past, you are void of the true knowledge and light set forth in the Scripture. Jesus says, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. — John 14:12—14. Let us see what some of the leading literary men say concerning this Scripture. One says; “It would be tempting the Lord, if we refused medical counsel and aid in the hour of sickness, and then besought purely a miraculous cure.” If the Father is glorified in the Son in herding a sin sick soul, will it not be to the glory of God to heal a sick body? Another says, while in the Holy Land and mulling of Jesus healing the sick; “The day of miracles is past”. I am sorry some people have much a small estimate of a God who gives us life, supplies all our needs, and keeps the world moving harmoniously in its ceaseless orbit. O! I praise God that the miraculous days of healing the body and saving the soul, are not past, but in our midst. Yea more, they are known in my own experience, and I see it, taught, very plainly in the Word. O praise God, for the glorious light, He has revealed to His humble children. I bless God for the direct communication the Spirit hath with me, that I can know God’s will and have grace to follow his commands. I praise Jesus that he has sent “the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost and shall teach you all things.” Now if ye abide in Me, and my words in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. —John 15:7. I praise God just now that I am fully saved and filled with His glory in my soul. O magnify the Lord for all His works. Praise him ye people for the glorious evening light. Let us sing aloud His glorious praises. Let us exalt Him in Zion. Let all that is within me, sing on the highest mountain, of the wonderful and sublime love of Jesus, that now fills my soul. Your Bro. saved and kept by the mighty power of God. Amen.

John C. Mayne.

Dear Brethren’: — Glory be to God, for what I feel in my soul just now. It is like a well of water springing up unto everlasting life. Praise God for salvation that saves from all sin. The closer I live to God the brighter the light shines. I praise God for a willing heart to follow Him,

Praise Jesus for ever and ever. I am sanctified by a second work of grace, and made free in Christ Jesus. ”But now being made free from sin and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness and the end everlasting life.” I am trusting in God this morning for every thing. He has promised to be with us even to the end. Praise the Lord O my soul; glory, glory to his name. O the blessed Holy Spirit, how He leads me in the straight and narrow pathway in the light of perfect day. I am the Lord’s, soul and body. I am so thankful the Lord ever called me to serve Him as my Savior. I am determined to “press my way onward and upward toward the mark of the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” I have given myself to the Lord for time and eternity, and ever intend to stand firm for the Lord. Dear brethren pray for me that I may stand firm to the end. Your Bro. in Christ.

Dear Brethren: – In much love, joy and peace in the Holy Ghost I greet you. May the God of all grace strengthen you and build you up in the most holy faith. “The very God of peace sanctify and keep you blameless unto the coming of the Lord Jesus.” I have already told you that I had organized a Wesleyan Methodist work here. One class at Lone Star. After I got into the light I was desirous to communicate the light to them also. After a few weeks in God’s time I went over to see them, but they were very cold toward me. The second visit, at night, they tried to fire me out with fire crackers, but God was wonderfully with me to support and the power of God prevailed. At the close sister McQuain requested me to give the reasons for leaving them as I did after doing such a work. I appointed two weeks at 11 o’clock to give them. Bro. and sister Defore accompanied me, full of the Holy Ghost and fire, ready to suffer for Christ’s sake. There had been threats made and brought a considerable crowd of lookers on. We commenced services soon after Sabbath school closed, but several of the Wesleyans would not slay in the house, but sat back of the house. I let the light on by showing the Word of God that the Church was the Body of Christ and is holy, and those organizations were unclean having many unholy, unclean and ungodly sinners in them. Consequently cannot be the Church. God organizes His own Church, but when I organized there I was walking in all the light I had with a good conscience toward God. One, Brad- field disturbed some in the beginning, but to no hurt. I closed by showing up old babylon in the light of prophecy. Toward the close when I struck their idol those outside began to rant pacing too and fro and talking to one another. I seeing the devil was raging with great fury the Holy Ghost moved me to a more holy zeal and poured out the vials of God’s eternal wrath upon babylon, showing that according to prophecy she must and will fall, for God’s Word cannot fail, and the time was soon coming when God’s people would come out of her and not one left, but she would become the habitation of devils etc. Bless God! How they did rant. I never felt more bold for the cause in my life. I had no tear, glory to God forever! When I got through a professor accused me of many things. Mr. Bradfield, Quaker, ranted terribly, and said we were tile beast that was spoken of that should persecute the saints of God. Both of them holiness fighters. After I explained a little, Mrs. Griffin, Wesley an, jumped up crying out, let’s get out of here, let’s go home. I’m insulted, I’m insulted now etc. From that it was utter confusion for some time. Bro. Defore spoke with great power till the confusion compelled him to stop. Mrs. Griffin went out of doors and gave her babe to some one and after about all were out of the house came in at me breathing out bitter things against me saying, “If my boys go to hell I’ll hold you responsible for they had more confidence in you than any body.” I said they ought to have had more in Jesus than me, at which she flew at me striking me in the back two or three times and knocked me against the desk. I praised God and was happy through it all. Glory to God for salvation that will endure for Jesus’ sake. Hallelujah! Amen! We held the grounds and gained victory through Jesus. Hallelujah! Sister McQuain a sanctified Wesleyan stood the grounds with us through it all and would not leave the house till we did, although some insisted. She accepted the truth and said it was plain, and I think will walk in the fight. Glory to Jesus for victory. They would not ask me to dinner, but Bro. Defore prepared dinner and we ale it, in the shade. Praise God from whom ail blessings flow. I think if the constable had not been there they probably would have committed violence. We went from there seven or eight miles to meeting about 4 o’clock, where we had blessed liberty. At this place we found a sister Young that has been standing alone for a few years for the cause of holiness. She gave a warm testimony. The dear ones at home prayed for me for trouble was anticipated. God is working in this country. May He send a cyclone of His eternal power to sweep over this country in the way of salvation. Your Bro. saved, cleansed and anointed by the blood which takes all the shrink out. Glory to God forever! Pray for us all and the work of God here Hallelujah! Amen!

Dear. Brethren: — I will try and writs a little of my experience air! my testimony for Jesus. I am only a child in years, and have been instructed faithfully by my mother. On the 13th of July ’87, Brother Warner and band came to us full of the Spirit and glory of God; and when I beheld with wonder their smiling happy faces, ray heart was touched and I began to ask God to show me the way to this happiness and joy. The time was so short I only had the opportunity of attending one meeting while they were here, but praise the Lord He is always near to hear when a penitent sinner calls. I kept on asking for salvation, and on the fourth day after their departure the Lord appeared to me, fairest among ten-thousand and the one altogether lovely. Glory to Jesus! Then I asked my mother how to get sanctification, and she explained to me how to consecrate all to God to lay all on the altar and claim it by faith; and I made haste and was soon consecrated, and accepted. Glory! Glory be to our God who gives us the victory through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Hallelujah! The light of God streamed into my soul and I was led by the Spirit to Rev. 14:5, and then 1 Cor. 6:15. I have no need to join one of the harlots. I belong to Jesus Christ, the true Church that the gates of hell cannot prevail against. Glory to God! Pray for me dear saints that I may be taught of God; that I may understand His blessed Word. Amen!

Morley, Mich.

Dear Brethren: — I feel it my duty to testify to the goodness of God through the Gospel Trumpet that the blessing that I have enjoyed may be sent abroad.

About eight years ago I became a true believer in God, and was convinced that I was a sinner, and I repented and was baptized by a Christian minister: and during this time I was looking around and the different sects for the true Gospel and true worshipers of God, but could not find any. But a few of us prayed continually that God would send some of His people in this neighborhood. Praise the Lord, He did send them. Glory to God in the highest for free salvation. At the beginning of last winter the Lord sent Bro. Jacobson and Bro. and sister Slowell from Fields Mich, in our neighborhood, and by the help of God they have done a glorious work here. I received the truth and glory to God I am saved, sanctified and washed in the blood of the Lamb, and have been healed of the dyspepsia of which I was troubled very much for about a year, but I have been perfectly healed by Bro. Jacobson and sister Stowell laying on bunds and calling on the Lord to do the work. Praise the Lord for His loving kindness. More than twenty persons gave their hearts to God; but as our Savior has said: Some seed fail upon stony places where they had not much earth, and forthwith they sprang up because they had no deepness of earth; and some fell among thorns and the thorns sprang up and choked them. But others fell into good ground and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixty fold, some thirtyfold. Even so it was here, as the Lord’s servant sowed the Word of God. But praise the Lord, some are holding fast to the blessed truth, and by the help of God we will still continue holding meetings and praising the. Lord. The Lord has chosen me deacon over His little flock at this place, and by the grace of God we are bound to hold the fort until reinforcements come; then glory to God the victory is won. Pray for me brethren that I may continue faithful to God. Your Brother in the Lord, sanctified by the blood of the Lamb.

Windefield Jail, Kan.

Dear Brethren: — I am in jail for the truth’s sake. The meeting at our house disturbed some of our babylonian neighbors, and they had me thrust in jail. “At the noise of the taking of babylon the earth is moved.” Bro. John P. Haner held a tabernacle meeting at this place, and we had ordinance meeting at our house. The devil was wonderfully stirred up and did not rest until he was revenged. The holy people are wonderfully persecuted here. They have had Bro. Kinney in jail twice and now they have taken me. We ask the prayers of all the holy people that God may show His displeasure in some public manner of this treatment of His servants. We have said the tower should fall from their city building. I am purified, made white and tried.

BANGOR MICH.

Dear Brethren: — My I simony is that I am filled with all joy arid peace in the Holy Ghost. Praise the Lord for ever and ever! I have the witness of God continually in my soul. Since God has sanctified my soul I have had many trials, but He has brought me through with constant victory and complete salvation. O hallelujah to our God for His wonderful works to the children of men. He is all and in all to me. When we live to please God we cannot please men: for God is not pleased with men pleasers; so let us all be careful and not try to please man when it; does not please God. Not with eye service as men pleasers: but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. We must live according to God’s Word and so fulfill the law of Christ. O I am so glad that I am d live d from all the powers of hell and I am reg..ig in the by one Christ Jesus. I am ..ai..n..on the ocean of God’s eternal love; doing the will of God in all things. My God bless all the dear saints and keep then for Jesus sake. Amen!

Dear Brethren and all the saints greeting: — I feel led to write my testimony. Praise the lord I am well and saved and filled with all the fullness of God. Kilpatrick was here and the Lord gave us a powerful meeting, there were souls save I and brought out of babylon and the saints were greatly strengthened! Oh Hallelujah to our God! The Lord God omnipotent reigns and all other lords have been put to death. Praise our God for the death of all human lords. Babylon trembles for fear of her loss; truly she is fallen. Well the little ones are fall of fire and willing to obey God’s orders. There will be some baptized next Sunday if the Lord wills, oh I do thank God that He has a people that, are willing to follow the footsteps of Jesus. Oh I never can praise enough for what He has done for me, He has saved me from ail my sins and given me an inheritance among them that are sanctified. He has also healed me of heart disease when doctors said I could not be cared. I took my case to God and He instantly healed me praise His name forever

O now I see my Jesus
And reign with Him on earth;
I drink the flowing fountain.
That flows from heaven to earth.
Come all ye weak and sinful,
Come to this fount and live;
For Jesus wants to save you.
He’ll free forgiveness give.

I once was vale and sinful,
I heard my Savior call,
And when I came unto Him,
He did forgive me all.
I saw my Savior bleeding
Upon Mount Calvary,
I Cried: My God have mercy,
O save me ere I die.

Then He smiled upon me.
And sweetly bade me live.
Thy sins which are so many,
I freely all forgive:
My heart was filled with glory.
As I heard those blessed words
And now I tell the story,
Of His redeeming love.

Now come my friendly sinner,
And do not stay a-way,
Their Jesus waits to save you,
O come then while you may:
The feast is now made ready,
And Jesus bills you came,
And take salvation freely,
And march with us for home.

O Glory Hallelujah.
I’ve Jesus in my heart,
I know he’ll never leave me,
Now never from me part:
My title clear for heaven,
I’ve victory in my soul,
I know if I prove faithful,
I too shall reach the goal.

From your sister saved and sanctified washed and redeemed through the blast of Christ.

Dear Brethren: – My testimony thus far is that my soul is feeding on the bread of eternal life. I realize that God is with me and with us as a family. I know that God is with me and is ever loading me in the way of His love. I am looking for ward for the time when God will poor out His spirit in more wonderful power that will make the walls of Jerico tremble at the far distant sound. We are asking God to send some of His chosen anointed ones here at once, if it is His will. We are growing in grace and in the knowledge of God day by day; saved from sin and kept by the power of in peace and harmony without fear or doubt of the mercy of God and of His justice to us; for we have placed ourselves and all we have in His hands for time and eternity. We expect to obey Him in all things. Your sister saved in Jesus for ever more. Amen!

Weston, O.

Dear Saints of the Most High: — My soul says, Hallelujah to God and the Lamb for salvation full and tree. Oh, my joy is full. Praise His holy name! Wife and I, Bro. and sister Guyer went to Jerry City July 10 to hold meeting with the dear saints there; and the Church at Roush’s was there. The Lord met with us, and O how He did fill our souls with His holy fire. Sabbath morn at half past ten o’clock we met at the Caris school house and the Holy Spirit come on us and we preached the awful Word of God from 1 John 3:6. The Holy Spirit brought conviction to the hearts of many. At night there was an altar erected and five came forward and was saved. Praise the Lord! We observed the ordinances of washing the saints feet and partaking of the Lord’s supper, and the Lord filled the house with His glory. There was twenty-nine that partook of the ordinances. Praise God for the evening light. O ye ordinance fighters, get salvation then you will see that the Lord means what He says, and the Holy Spirit lead you into all truth. O what a time we had with the Lord. Praise His holy name! Your Bro. saved and under the blood.
