HEAVEN.

_____

From heav’n’s exhaustless fountains flow
The “living waters,” on this shore;
And those who drink, thenceforth shall know
Earth’s soul, e’er craving thirsts no more.

No rival temples lift their doom,
In that fair sun-lit radiant clime;
For God, — the Father — reigns alone,
And all is concord all the time.

O heaven! — dwelling-place of God!
O glorious holy land divine!
Where seraph’s feet thy streets have trod,
Shall one glad day be pressed by mine.

There one unfading summer blooms;
The tree of life unfading lives;
And its sweet fragrance ever looms.
Its fruit immortal vigor gives.

In that ethereal palace, fair,
Where countless myriads of God’s throng,
Inspired with music rich and rare.
Serve in seraphic ardor strong.

The Lamb unveils his smiling face,
To those who shine around his throne;
While they adore his bliss and grace,
With songs which are to earth unknown.

No heart is sad with burning tears,
No wasting sorrows can be found;
No foe can reach, no pain, no fears,
Those whom eternal walls surround.

O land of bliss! On faith’s keen eye,
Faint gleams of glory on us break:
And when in earth’s last sleep we lie,
’Mid heaven’s splendor, let us wake!

Then I shall join that angel band,
My faith be lost in sight;
And reach my home in that fair land,
Forever in the light.

’Tis heaven here with all the pure,
And heaven there, to gain;
Our happiness is truly sure.
With Christ we’ll ever reign.

B. E. Warren.

BIBLE SALVATION vs MODERN SPIRITUALISM.

The Doctrine of the Bible arrayed against the Doctrine of Devils.

_____

I will not attempt in this brief article, to prove the origin of the “Seducing Spirits,” which to day are deceiving souls by the thousands; but I will prove that they are not, as they claim to be, “departed friends.” Dr. “Randolph says: “For seven years I held daily intercourse with what purported to be my mother’s spirit. I am now firmly persuaded that it was nothing but an evil spirit and infernal demon, who in that guise gained my soul’s confidence and led me to the very brink of ruin.” One text will prove the truthfulness of the foregoing testimony. It is found in Luke 16. I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: for I have five brethren: that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.” This is plain; it is not possible for the spirits of departed friends to return and hold communication with those who are yet in the flesh, and even if it were possible, it is not necessary, for we have Moses and the prophets (the Old Testament) and we of this last dispensation, have also the New Testament to guide us to Abraham’s bosom, and to warn us against the “place of torment.”

We conclude, then, that the spirits that claim to be those of departed friends, are not what they claim to be, but are spirits of unclean devils, which, in order to “seduce” their victims, and to better gain their confidence, impersonate deceased friends. That our very atmosphere is pregnant with evil spirits, every Christian must admit. And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said legion; because many devils were entered into him. Luke 8:30. And devils also came out of many. Luke 4:41. God’s people of the present day are often called upon to cast out devil’s out of poor human unfortunates, in the name of Jesus Christ, through prayer and the laying on of hands. “And these signs shall follow them that believe. In my name shall they cast out devils.” Mark 16:17. False professors have not this power.

But some one may ask, How do the evil spirits communicate with human beings? Let the word of God answer: And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are ye? And the man in whom the evil spirit was, leaped on them, and overcame them. Acts 19. Any one may become a medium who is willing to give up his or her individuality, and become the property of demons. “At a Spiritualist Circle held at the office of the “Banner of Light” in Boston, the communicating spirit was asked, What is modus operandi of controling a medium?” “The spirit answered: As a free intelligence or spirit, who by nature has no right to the medium’s body. My first step is to come and hold communion with the spirit who owns the body. The result of that communion is not transmitted to the external senses of the medium, but to the internal; therefore it is quite as tangible, as real to the spirit as it could be to the external. I ask the spirit, Will you yield me up the control of your mortal form for a short time? The answer is generally, ‘I will.’ * * * The spirit is subjected to the entire control of the predominating spirit. It is, in a word, magnetized by the spirit; held in perfect subjection. It seems to sleep; and it does sleep, so far as external life is concerned.”

You see, dear reader, that in order to become a medium one must give himself over into the hands of the devil. When this done, he can use the voice to impersonate a mother’s voice, or control the hand to imitate the hand-writing of a departed brother, or sister, etc. But some one will ask, How do the devils know the voices and the hand-writings of departed friends. I will answer by asking another question: How did the spirits know that Saul and his sons would die on the morrow? I Sam. 28:19. The devil is an intelligent being. See Job 1 and 2. He is a prophet. See Gen. 3:5; Rev. 12:12. He also reads Bible. Matt. 4:6. Many wonder why “physical manifestations” are best obtained in darkened rooms. Jesus says: Every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be discovered. John 3:20. When Mrs. Cora Hatch was lecturing in Boston, in a trance state, she was asked to explain it. The spirit answered: “The action of light agitates, dissipates or in some way disturbs the fluid, gas, magnetism, or whatever the instrumentality be called, which is employed by spirits in acting upon grosser matter; that they are unable to control or employ it.”

“We see that a spirit controls his subject much as a mesmerizer controls his. Mesmerism is something which a man does while he has his clothes on: Spiritualism is a similar act of his after his clothes have been put off. [By clothes they mean body. Ed.] Suppose I magnetize you to day; and that I, the mesmerizer, speak, write, act through, you, you being unconscious, this is Mesmerism. Suppose further, that I die to night; and that, to morrow, I, a spirit, come and magnitize you, and then speak, write, act through you, this is Spiritualism.” This makes it plain; but bear in mind, dear reader, that Jesus said the “mesmerizer” never returns after death to do the “magnetizing.” Luke 16. “ I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.” 2 Sam. 12:23.

Dr.Wm. B. Potter says of Spiritualism: “We have, through our own mediumship, and that of others, had “spirit manifestations” which have shown beyond all doubt or possibility of mistake to be of spirit origin.” “Fifteen years of critical study of Spiritual Literature, an extensive acquaintance with the leading Spiritualists, and a patient, systematic and thorough investigation of the manifestations, for many years, enables us to speak from actual knowledge, definitely and positively of Spiritualism as it is. Spiritual Literature is full of the most insidious and seductive doctrines, calculated to undermine the very foundations of morality and virtue, and lead to the most unbridled licentiousness. We are told that we must have charity; that it is wrong to blame anyone; that we must not expose iniquity, as it will harden the guilty; that none should be punished; that man is a machine and not to blame for his conduct; that there is no high, no low, no good, no bad; that sin. is a lesser degree of righteousness; that nothing we can do can injure the soul or retard its progress; that those who act the worst will progress the fastest; that lying is right, slavery is right, murder is right, adultery is right; that whatever is, is right.” Such, dear reader, is the creed of the demon spirits who purport to be the spirits of “departed friends.”

“But how,” says one, “is it possible to seduce the Christian who has been taught from childhood the very opposite to the doctrines of Spiritualism?” In a little work, entitled “Spiritualism Unveiled,” is tire following: “We will give an example of their work. Many such might be given. We were acquainted with a devoted Christian woman in South Boston, who was persuaded to attend a Spiritualist’s circle in company with several other professors of religion. The spirit requested them to read in the scriptures which they did. This led them to believe that a good spirit had come. They were then desired to pray. They had no further doubts but that the spirit of a Christian was visiting them, and giving good instruction. Accordingly they went again and again. When the seducing spirit had fully gained their confidence, so that they believed all he said, he then endeavored to convince them that some portions of the Bible were not reliable. He continued his infidel objections till she, who was a devoted disciple, of Jesus when she first visited the circle, became a medium, and laid the Bible away as of little or no value. But suppose the seducing spirit should begin with a company of deists instead of Christians. Would he say to them, “Read the Bible and pray?” Nay, verily. But he would lead them further on in unbelief, till he got them into practical atheism. The spirits never lead their followers to Jesus as a Savior, when they are allowed to finish their work.” The word of God teaches that “man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife; and they shall be one flesh.” “Husbands love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it.” “So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.” “Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands.” “But I say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery.” But Paul, by the Holy Ghost, prophesies that “in the latter time some would depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. Speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry.” I can prove by their own testimonies that the Spiritualists as well as the Romanists are fulfilling the above prophetic words, at this very time, which also proves that we are living in the “latter times.” Dr. B. F. Hatch, husband of Mrs. Cora V. Hatch, later, Mrs. Daniels, the trance-speaking medium, and who accompanied his wife on her lecturing tours, says: “The extensive opportunity which I have had, and that too, among the first class of the Spiritualists, of learning its nature and results, 1 think will enable me to lay just claims to being a competent witness in the matter.” “Iniquities which have justly received the condemnation of centuries are openly upheld; vices which would destroy every wholesome regulation of society are crowned as virtues; prostitution is believed to be fidelity to self; marriage an outrage on freedom; love evanescent, and like the bee, should sip the sweets wherever found; bastards are claimed to be spiritually begotten. * * * the most damning iniquities are everywhere perpetrated in Spiritual circles. * * * The abrogation of marriage, bigamy, accompanied by robbery, theft, rapes, are all chargeable to Spiritualism.* * * For a long time I was swallowed upin its whirlpool of excitement, * * * but during the past eight months I have devoted my attention to a critical investigation of its moral, social and religious bearing, and I stand appalled before the revelations of its awful and damning realities. * * * With but little inquiry I have been able to count up over seventy mediums, most of whom have wholly abandoned their conjugal relations, others living with their paramours called “affinities,” others in promiscuous adultery, and still others exchanged partners.” At a Spiritual convention held in Rutland, Vt., the following resolution was presented: “Resolved, that the only true and natural marriage is an exclusive conjugal love between one man and one woman; and the only true home is the isolated home based upon this exclusive love.” This seems at first, a very innocent resolution; but read it again. To make it plain, I quote the language of another Spiritualist, spoken “in defence of a medium known as the Rev. John Spear, who became the father of an illegitimate child by the direction of the spirits:’’ “It is reserved for this our day, under the inspiration of the spirit world, for a quiet, equable, retiring woman to rise up in the dignity of her womanhood, and declare in the face of her oppressors and a scowling world, I will be free. * * * And no man, or set of men, no church, no state, shall withhold from me the realization of that purest of all aspirations inherent in every true woman, the right to rebeget myself when, and by whom, and under such circumstances as to me seems fit and best.” “Mrs. Lewis, in a speech delivered at Ravenna, Ohio, said: To confine her to love one man was an abridgment of her rights. * * * Although she had one husband in Cleveland, she considered herself married to the whole human race. All men were her husbands, and she had an undying love for them. What business is it to the world, whether one man is the father of my children, or ten men are! I have a right to say who shall be the father of my offspring.” Now we can better understand the Rutland, Vt. resolution: one man or woman at a time, but should he or she fail to love that one exclusively, discard him or her, and find another “affinity.” Such is the “Divine Law of Marriage” instituted by Spiritualists under the direction of seducing spirits; and of course, this constitutes one of the many “doctrines of devils.” “But evil men and seducers will wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.” 2 Tim. 3:13.

Here are some “doctrines of devils,” as communicated through their mediums, and accepted by Spiritualists; together with a few inspired scripture texts, refuting the same: [“D. D.” is used simply as an abbreviation, and casts no reflection whatever upon the title of the self constituted “reverends” of the sects, provided they can prove that they do not teach “doctrines of devils.”]

Doctrine of devils. “You are your own saviors.”

Isa. 43:11. — “I, even I, am the Lord; and beside me there is no Savior.”

D. D. “Christ’s death has nothing to do with the remission of sins.”

Matt. 26:28. — “For this is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for the remission of sins.”

D. D. “Each and every one of you is a judge, a God.”

Heb. 12:23. “God the judge of all.” Isa. 45:21. “There is no God else beside me.”

D. D. “ There is no God anywhere to forgive sin’s. There is no such thing as forgiveness of sins.”

Dan. 2:28. — “There is a God in heaven.” Psa. 103:3. — “Who forgiveth thine iniquities.” Eph. 1:7. — “In whom we have forgiveness of sins.”

D. D. “If Jesus Christ was the Son of the Most High God, so are you, every one of you.”

1 Jno. 3:8. — “He that committeth sin is of the devil.” Jno. 8:44. — “Ye are of your father, the devil.” Rev. 21:7. — “He that overcometh shall inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.” D. D. “I do not believe that the person who is called Jesus Christ was, or is, God’s only Son,” says a Spiritualist.

Jno. 3:19, — “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son.”

D. D. “Jesus of Nazareth was a good man, but by no means infallible; no more divine than you are.”

1 Jno. 2:22. — “Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ?” 1 Pet. 2:22. — “Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth.”

D. D. “We behold in the advent of Spiritualism, the second coming of the Spirit of Jesus of Nazareth.” — A Spiritualist.

1 Thess. 4:16. — “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.” Rev. 1:7 — “Behold, he cometh with clouds, and every eye shall see him.”

D. D. “Jesus never did raise the dead, never could.”

Jno. 11:43. “And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth.” Mark 5:39. — “And he tool; the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, I say unto thee, Arise. And straightway the damsel rose.” Jno. 11:23. — “I am the resurrection and the life.”

D. D. So then we will say the natural body of Jesus Christ was never re-animated after the crucifixion. All nature, our God tells us so.

Luke 24:5, 6. — “Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen.” Luke 24:39. — “Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I, myself: handle me and see, for a spirit hath not flesh and bones as ye see me have.”

D. D. “Man is to be judged by himself as a spirit; he is to come before no other tribunal.”

Acts 10:42. — “And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the judge of quick and dead.”

D. D. “There is no devil either. Seems to me as though man must be devoid of good sense to believe anything of the kind.”

1 Jno. 3:8. — “The devil sinneth from the beginning.” “The devil as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” — 1 Pet. 5:8. “The devil is a liar and the father of it.” — Jno. 8:44.

D. D. “Spiritually and divinely speaking, there is no sin. Full well we know the book you call the Bible teaches of sin. Full well we know the whole Christian world recognizes such a condition. But to us there is no sin.” “Jesus of Nazareth, if he were here to day, would tell you as we tell you.” “All men and women are equally righteous, because all are good. No matter where we find them, or under what conditions they exist, they are all good.” “If there is sin anywhere, God made that sin.”

Rom. 5:12. — “Wherefore as by one man, sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” Jno. 1:10. — “If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and the truth is not in us.” Hab. 1:13. — “Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil.”

D. D. A spirit claiming to be the Rev. John Moore, says: “My friend asks, Do you believe the Bible? I answer, No; I do not. I cannot believe one word of it as the word of God.” Another, says, “I can assure my friend that God has no more to do with writing that book than he had, and do not expect to create any light in the mental world, if you cling to your Bible.”

2 Tim. 3:16, 17. — “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. — 2 Cor. 10:4, 5. “Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. — Ps. 119:105.

Dear reader, I believe that by the help of God, I have proved by his holy and immutable word, that the difference between Bible salvation and Spiritualism is as wide as that between heaven and hell, between Christ and Belial, between the kingdom of God and the bottomless pit. You will notice that the devils often contradict one another upon different points of doctrines. For instance: One says, “Christianity and Spiritualism stand upon the same foundation * * * * * Spiritualism has given it (Christianity) a vitality which it had not possessed before since the time of the apostles.” While another says, “Spiritualism meets, neutralizes and destroys Christianity.” Spiritualists claim that the Bible teaches and encourages Spiritualism, quoting the account of Saul’s visit to the witch of Endor, as an example. 1 Sam. 28. But the Bible does not teach Spiritualism by narrating this incident, any more than it encourages sinning, by narrating David’s downfall in 2 Sam. 11 chap. On the contrary, the word of God every where discountenances the works of the devil. The works of the devil are idolatry witchcraft * * * they that do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. — Gal. 5:19-21. Christ suffered not the evil spirits to speak, but rebuked them. — Luke 4:41. Paul commanded the spirit of divination to come out of one possessed. And he came out the same hour. — Acts 16:18.

But there is salvation for spiritualists if they will only believe. See Acts 8:9. God in Moses’ time, suffered not a witch to live. Ex. 22:18. They are called Mediums, etc., now, and God says, “whosoever will may come and partake of the water of life freely.”

One more warning. ”Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against wicked spirits [margin] in heavenly places. Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.” — Eph. 6:11-16. Those who depart from the faith, expose themselves, and are deceived. “Have the faith of God.”

John E. Roberts.

Dear Saints of God: I am saved and sanctified. One year ago I heard the saints preach, and the Lord led me in a new way that shineth brighter than the sun. I do praise God for this evening light. Bro. Simon A. Yoder came to our house and preached to a few last winter, and the result was God opened a door and we were blest with a tabernacle meeting. Praise God! Bro’s Schell and Warren came here and we were blest with the truth in all its fullness. We have much to contend with, but God is able to bring glory to his name through his saints. Praise God!

Vevay, Ind.

To all the Beloved Saints, Greeting: I feel grateful to God to tell you I am still enjoying the blessings from our loving Father’s hand and the joy which his salvation brings. How I thank him for his abundant mercies bestowed in the past year, the sweet communion with his Holy Spirit, the blessed light and revelation of his truth, and the sweet experiences of my heart as it is kept hid away in the rock. In reading God’s word, my soul is fed and satisfied. What perfect rest and peace to those who put their whole trust in him! The Word says, “They shall walk safely and thy foot shall not stumble.” “When thou best down thou shalt not be afraid; thy sleep shall be sweet.” My prayer is that I may be led in the paths of righteousness, where I may be kept by power divine for God’s use and glory. In Christ is my sufficiency for soul and body. Yours in the faith of the gospel,

Mary R. Malcomson.

A SELECTION OF SCRIPTURES.

BY MOTHER SMITH.

_____

AFTER this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. — Rev. 4:1. This proves very plain that these things had not come to pass in John’s time.

I know thy works, that thou art neither cold not hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of my mouth. — Rev. 3:15, 16. What an awful condition to be spewed out by God! These know not that they are wretched and miserable, and poor, and blind and naked. They think they are rich in goods.

And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. — Rev. 28:1, 2. Well, truly, Babylon is in a bad condition. I don’t wonder that Jeremiah said, Pray not for this people.

And when thou art spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life. — Jer. 4:30.

The voice of the Bridegroom and of the Bride shall not be heard in her.

I have seen a horrible thing in the house of Israel. “I have smitten you with blasting and mildew.” I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies. — Amos 5:21. Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. — Amos 8:11. A day of alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers.

Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? — Haggai 2:3. Well, we see it in an awful condition indeed. Her sins and her abominations have reached clear up to heaven, and God has cast them down to the earth, so low, that they can never rise again.

Thou shalt fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them. — Isaiah 41:16.

Awake, awake, put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean. — Isa. 52:1.

Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off. — Nahum 1:15.

The people of thy holiness have possessed it but a little while: our adversaries have trodden down thy sanctuary. We are thine: thou never barest rule over them; they were not called by thy name. — Isa. 63:18, 19.

Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee. — Jer. 7:16.

Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return. — Jer. 8:5.

Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver. — Isa. 50:2.

In that day shall the branch of the Lord be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel. — Isa. 4:2. Now the prophet says, “In that day.” Now, what day? In the day of his preparation, when he shall bring his people out of Babylon.

The prophet says, In the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow into it. Any many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the louse of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths. — Micah 4:1, 2.

__________

FILTHINESS.

_____

To the Dear Readers of the Gospel Trumpet: I now take my pen in hand, asking God to direct. My heart has been caused to leap for joy when I think what God has done for me. As I have seen people claiming to be followers of Jesus, gather in different places and discuss the subject of salvation and spit their nasty tobacco juice about them and then some tell some filthy story and the rest join in with a hearty laugh; then comes to my mind, truly, Babylon is fallen and become the habitation of devils and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. — Rev. 18:2. For the scripture says, “Having these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” — 2 Cor. 7:1. Now what promises? Let us turn to 2 Cor. 6:17, 18, and there we read, “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.” Now if we expect the promise we must obey the command; for he says the obedient shall eat the good of the land. He has not called us unto uncleanness but unto holiness. — 1 Thes. 4:7. And again, “But fornication and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints, neither filthiness nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient, but rather giving of thanks.” — Eph. 5:3, 4 Now we are all saints or sinners, by the word of God, for it gives the two classes only. Still some will claim they do not believe they will have to go to hell for using their tobacco, and some will hang to one thing and some another. Now let us see why they do this. Turn to 2 Pet. 2:10, “But chiefly them that walk after the flesh, in the lust of uncleanness and despise government. Presumptuous are they, self- willed, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.” Why are they self- willed? Because they have the carnal mind that Paul says is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. — Rom. 8:7, and again in Prov. 30:12, we find that it speaks of a generation that are pure in their own eyes and yet are not washed from their filthiness. Oh may God show the people by his blessed word that their way will not stand in the day of judgment, but we must have “thus saith the Lord,” for his ways are not our ways, neither his thoughts out thoughts. — Isa. 55:8.

Now I would ask the reader if you think Jesus Christ ever indulged in any filthy habit; if not, listen to the word in 1 Pet. 2:21, 22, “For even hereunto were ye called; because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example that ye should follow his steps, who did no sin neither was guile found in his mouth.” Now if God has called any soul and the devil has them bound down with any habit, hear the promise in Eze. 36:25 — 27, “Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you and ye shall he clean. From all your filthiness, and from all your idols will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh; and I will give you an heart of flesh; and I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments and do them.” Oh praise our God, that he is so willing to do so much more than we can ask or think. But be careful and do not defile yourself in any way; for he that defileth the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. 1 Cor. 3:17. “Wherefore lay apart all filthiness, and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.” — Jas. 1:21. “Saved and kept by the power of God.

Dear Brethren: May God bless you all. Amen. To the beloved brethren and friends in Ore. who are looking for and expecting us to come and labor among you, I would say that in our last report in the GOSPEL TRUMPET of the 4th, we spoke of going to labor in Umatilla Co., the Lord willing, in Feb. We received word from some of the dear ones there, saying, it was thought best and more expedient for us to come to them next spring instead of in Feb. under the then existing circumstances, to which we freely say, amen. So that we will not visit Ore. till next April, the Lord willing. But let all of the saints or friends for the whole truth in those parts, please correspond with us between now and next March who wish our services and a meeting in your vicinity.

Beaver Dam, Ind., Feb. 5. 1894.

Dear Brethren: Grace, mercy and peace be with you all, amen. Last night was our last meeting with the church at Olive Bethel. The brethren expect to continue there for a while; a good interest still exists there, and no doubt more will be saved in the near future. The meetings at Claypool, Beaver Dam, Father Plantz’s and Olive Bethel were very profitable. Samuel Plantz was ordained elder, and John Plantz deacon, for the church in their neighborhood. We expect to commence meeting at Yellow Lake Bethel to-morrow evening. The Lord is with us in power in presenting the Word, and wonderfully blessing our labors, and settling us down deeper and deeper in the Word and in cur experience. Our address for the present is Burket, Ind. From Yellow Lake we expect to go to Bro. Crall’s, four miles west of Warsaw. Yours in the holy war and out for souls.

Knox, Ind., Feb. 3, 1894.

Dear Saints of God: As I have not written for some time, I feel led of the Lord to write a few lines to let you know how the work of the Lord is prospering in these parts. First, I want to say to the glory of God that we are saved, and have complete victory in our souls. On Dec. 29, 1893, in company with my daughter, Pearl Strang and Sisters Lodema and Cora Kaser went about ten miles southwest of our home in Marshal Co., Ind. and commenced meeting in the name of Jesus, at the Stringer school house. Held one week and four days, which resulted in five souls getting out for God. There was a great deal of prejudice removed, and the people acknowlege the truth, for which we give God all the glory. Praise his dear name! After closing the meeting at

Page 3

that place we went to our home for a week, then came to this place, Coffin school house, which is six miles northeast of Knox, Ind. Up to this time, four have come to the Lord for pardon, and one of the four consecrated for the second work. There is quite a large attendance and deep conviction upon the people. The evening light has never been preached at this place before. Pray much, dear saints, that God may save many souls before this meeting closes. Pray much for us that God may keep us in his order, very humble, and use us much to his glory in preaching his Word. When the Lord is through with us here we expect to go about six miles south to begin battle against sin and Satan. There are many calls for the gospel in these parts. We are praying much that God will establish his glorious church in this place. The people are very kind to us here, in providing us homes and also in supplying our needs. May God reward them with salvation is our prayer. God bless all his children and help all to stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Your saved brother,

S. P. Strang and Co.

La Paz, Ind., Feb 9, 1894.

Dear Saints of God, Greeting: The New Hope meeting was a grand success for God. People came for ten miles around. While the meeting house was quite large, on the Lord’s day many had to turn back who could not get in on the account of the house being packed to the utmost. We continued the meeting for about three weeks. Eighteen came to the altar, Christ, about all for the pardoning of their sins. On the 3d inst. we went to South Bend, and held over the 4th, which was also another feast to our soul. Sunday morning four came to to the altar. One was delivered out of the Lutheran sect, and dear old Bro. J. O. Swanger, was delivered out Campbelliteism, who had been a deacon in said sect, but is now made free in Christ. After he got up from his knees, he took the Grand Army button (or badge), off his breast and threw it away, and said he now belonged to the army of God. The Lord willing we expect to open up meeting in the W. M. meeting house, La Paz, the 14th, and hold as long as the Lord wills. Then the Lord willing we will return to South Bend, and labor in that wicked city, and also Mishawaka, till the June camp meeting. Pray for us. Yours in the humility and meekness of Christ.

Ottokee, Q., Feb. 3, 1894.

Dear Trumpet Readers: We are glad to report we are all gloriously saved and have the evidence we are doing the will of God. Since our last report we held meeting three weeks at Ridgeville Corners, where truly God sent forth his judgments. When we went to that place we asked for the use of the M. E. house. The trustees said everything was quiet and peaceable and they did not want to be disturbed. The Word says, When they shall cry peace and safety, then sudden destruction shall come upon them. So we held meetings at private houses. There were only a few consecrations; others saw their condition but would not pay the price. From there we had a call to come to Ottokee. A brother had the promise of an Evangelical house, but where he went to get the house he left a TRUMPET. When they read that, and we got there, they said they had enough. But we believed God sent us there, so we found a private house, and asked permission to stay all night and hold one meeting. It was at Sister Lederer’s brother’s. So we invited in the neighbors and had meeting and the Lord wonderfully blessed our souls. The next morning the Disciple sect opened their house for us, and we began meeting in the name of the Lord. This is a new place, as they had never heard of the evening light. But the Lord opened more homes for us than we could fill. Already there have been five saved. Two have heard the call, “Come out of her,” and obeyed, and many others are in the valley of decision, and deep conviction rests on the people. One day after we had dismissed meeting, one man was so deeply convicted he fell to the floor and cried for mercy, and God forgave. We have been here two weeks; expect to continue the meeting as long as the Lord leads, then go to Fayette. We ask an interest in the prayers of all the saints, that God may give us much wisdom to deal with souls. Yours in the one body,

J. N. Worden and Co.

Waynesfield, O., Jan. 28, 1894.

Dearly Beloved Brethren: We are well and saved, and to God be all the glory. Meeting at this place of which we spoke in our last has been a glorious success and many hearts have been won to the truth and several were reclaimed, some justified and sanctified, subsequently. Others were at the altar who we feel have not yet reached the summit. May God help these precious souls to dig deep and build on the rock. — 1 Cor. 10:4. At the beginning of the meeting one dear saint was immersed in water. And although the devil had caused division by the works of one M. Welch, whom the Lord had not sent, thank God, the cause was removed and most all who” were ensnared made their escape under the blood, and the breach was repaired and the unity of the Spirit restored, and victory is on the Lord’s side. Some poor souls who so willfully and unlawfully disturbed the worship of God were made to feel the strong arm of the law, which we have reason to believe God has already blessed to their good, and since that, good order generally has prevailed. Yesterday four happy saints followed Jesus into the watery grave and were joyful in glory and blest and owned of the Lord. Among the above number was our much beloved Bro. Lorenzo Cook, whom God has delivered from the Baptist sect where he had been preaching. I feel he is a chosen vessel of the Lord. God has come here to stay. I go to Foraker, O. to morrow, the Lord willing. Meeting closed with a glorious ordinance service, in which thirty saints participated, and all were happy in doing so. Your free brother,

LATER.

Foraker, O., Feb. 5, 1894.

Dearly Beloved: May great grace be upon you all. Amen. I began meeting at this place Jan. 31, in Bro. C. E. Ford’s dwelling. Attendance not very large for want of a more capacious building to hold service in; but those who came were attentive listeners and some of the good seed fell in good ground, and has sprung up and is bearing fruit. We found some poor souls here that are under the power of the devil and have been trying to impose themselves upon the saints as leaders. The Lord smote them down by his word and power, but they did not get to the bottom as yet. May God bless and help them to dig deep and build on the sure foundation. In the meeting at this place a few souls were at the altar for pardon and one dear sister who came over from Waynesfield, O., knelt at the altar and consecrated for sanctification. The enemy had sowed the seed of discord here, but the precious word of God proved a fire and hammer. And although a few dear souls had been bothered some because of some fanatical ideas in regard to using the law, I believe by the word they got the true understanding. To day I go home. Father has healed my body; to him be the praise. Expect to go to New Pittsburg, Ind., Feb. 14, and from there to West Liberty, O., the Lord willing. Pray for me, all ye redeemed ones. I am your free and humble brother all on the altar,

J. N. Howard.

Cape Girardeau, Mo., Feb. 5, 1894.

Dear Saints of God, Greeting: We have been for more than three weeks in the battle for God Here. We found this to be a settlement composed mainly of German people. Most of them are Lutherans with a few Catholics. We begun in the name of our King to give the word of life, and from the first deep conviction was upon the people. Many who had been long bound in the awful darkness of sect teaching listened to the Word in astonishment, and expressed wonder that they had so long been kept in ignorance. The Spirit made the truth so powerfully manifest that very few indeed dare to deny it. And though it is exceeding difficult to get the Lutherans to move out of their dead formal ruts and get saved, yet the truth has indeed caused an earthquake among them, and many are those who are saying that they never saw it after this manner before. About twenty-five came to the altar for pardon, and we believe most of them received a real experience. A few other souls declared their freedom from sectism. Praise our God! He has a glorious little church here, and though they are most of them new in the way of God, we believe that it will be a fire that will light the darkness around them with the glory of God. Twenty- two were buried with Christ in baptism in the bosom of the mighty Mississippi river. This baptismal scene was one of the most sublime we ever witnessed. How sweet to see the newborn babes of God firmly stepping into the icy waters without the slightest hesitation. We had a glorious ordinance meeting in which nineteen took part, though it was storming, this preventing several from being present. Doubtless several more will soon be saved. We moved four miles down the river and are now holding meeting in a Methodist settlement. Our address for a time will still be Cape Girardeau. Dear saints, pray God’s blessings on us that that we may live humble and keep filled with the mighty power of God. Oh how much there is to be done, and how few there are to. do the work! We are continually receiving calls that we cannot fill. How our hearts are stirred as we hear calls coming up from benighted starving souls who are pleading for some one sent of God to give them the light. May the dear Lord send forth many more to bear this glorious “evening light.” Yours in the love and fellowship of the gospel.

346 River View St., Wichita, Kan., Feb. 7, 1894.

Dear Saints of God: I believe it would be to the glory of God for me to write a few lines this morning. I will just say over two months ago the dear Lord led me to go to Meriden, Kan., to hold forth the wonderful words of life to the people. While I had not made any pre-arrangement to go there, yet the call came in answer to prayer. But to go alone without some other one to go, it tried me very much. I wrote letters to different ones to come, also wrote to the Trumpet for help, yet none came. But thanks be to God, while he held me there for over five weeks, he gave us victory in rescuing a few that had fallen, and in sowing the seed to a few that came to hear the word. That place is one of the dark corners of this world; with a population of 450 inhabitants, there are five synagogue houses, and about four persons in the town that could be said that they are truly saved. Sister J. C. Rutty who lives some two miles from town, rendered good service in preaching the word of truth. I pray that God will cut her loose and open the way for her to go wherever the Lord has need of her. If she keeps true, God will most assuredly do so. After we closed the meeting at this place, I was pressed in spirit to go to Bushong, Lyon Co., Kan., as I had previously received an earnest call by the saints of that place to come there. While on my way I stopped at Topeka over night and met a few of the saints, and as they have no place to meet to worship, went to what is called the Church of God (Winebrennarian), as they were carrying on a series. We had a good congregation, God blessed his own word, insomuch the people said amen, but the preacher did so apart of the time, but he was so displeased when I got through, he suddenly dismissed the meeting. If some of the fire-baptized servants of God could go there in the spring with a tabernacle, and stay there for some time, I believe much good could be done. I went to Bushong, where I found God had a few true saints ready to go forth to battle for the Lord. We only held a few meetings in the town, but the most of the time went to a school house some five miles south-east where we had good attendance, with good order, and God blessed his own precious word at this place and the homes of the saints in the conversion of some eight souls; and ten or twelve were reclaimed that had backslidden. Out of this number some twelve consecrated for sanctification, and the most of them seem very clear in their experience. Seven followed the Lord in baptism; others yet to follow as soon as the weather gets warm. At night some thirty of the saints met at Bro. Jas. Hazzard’s where God met with us in mighty power, where we attended to the ordinance of the Lord’s supper and feet washing, according to his blessed word. Some souls got gloriously sanctified, and nearly all were filled with the Holy Ghost. All honor and glory be to God and our Savior Jesus Christ, for victory. At the first meeting the anti-ordinance sect attempted to make a disturbance; but God through his Spirit and word hindered their work and they did not make any other attempt. May the dear Lord keep all the dear ones true at these places mentioned. After a few days, the Lord willing, wife and I will go to Arkansas City to renew the battle. Yours kept by the power of God,

A. Markwell.

St. Louis, Mich., Feb. 9, 1894.

Dear Children of God: May grace and peace be multiplied unto you all. We are glad to report once more through the columns of the TRUMPET that we are kept by the power of God in the midst of all confusion and deception, with songs of praises to the living God in our hearts, and a two-edged sword in our hands, and complete victory in our souls. Amen. We are glad to report victory for the Lord in this part of his vineyard. Dec. 24, we commenced meeting 12 miles west of St. Louis in a school house. Companion and I held up the truth one week, then the Lord led Bro. C. E. Reeves to come to our help, The Lord gave us complete liberty and utterance to speak boldly and in love the truth in Christ, through much opposition from sectarian professors, The truth had its effect on the sinner. The young, the middle-aged, and the aged acknowledged that we preached the gospel of Christ. The meeting had just begun with great interest when we had to close on account of school. We felt like weeping, but were made to rejoice when at the close of the meeting before we left the school house a friendly sinner came to us and said this meeting ought to continue in this community, and that he would get us a meeting house if we would stay. The next morning we called on this friend and family and had prayer. The Spirit of conviction took hold on him and he was crushed by the melting power of God, and began to seek and wrestle with God until he got the victory and witness in his soul; and now he rejoices in the Savior’s love.

On the 11th of January, we, in company with Bro. C. E. Reeves, commenced meeting in the name of Jesus in a Radical U. B. meeting house, six miles west of St Louis. Here we truly found some of God’s children who were yoked up in Babylon, but had a grand experience of God’s salvation wrought in their hearts. These dear people never had heard the gospel preached in the evening light, but had been praying for something but did not know what this “something” would be when the Lord would send it. But as the word went forth in all its power and simplicity it had its designed effect on the hearts of the people. Both saints and sinners, some of the hardest sinners in that community, were melted by the gospel, sought and found the Savior. Many shouts and praises went up to God from the hearts of these people the first two weeks of this meeting; then the testing time came, when two of the devil’s agents came into the neighborhood, one a Free Methodist preacher, and one a Radical U. B. preacher. These two men went through the community peddling lies by the wholesale against the saints of God and truth. This had its effect upon a few dear souls who first drank in the truth and shouted praises to God for sending us there to preach the gospel that makes God’s people all one. Through these agents these dear souls were captured by the spirit of error and went into darkness. We pray that they may be delivered. A good number accepted the whole truth all the way through. Some declared their freedom from sect babylon, others are weighing the matter closely and without a doubt will obey the call. Among those who declared their freedom in Christ, was Brother Charley Wright, who was a minister in the U. B. sect. This dear brother was somewhat prejudiced at first, but had an honest heart and when the truth was spoken by the Holy Ghost the spirit in his heart said amen. The last night of the meeting the Lord used this dear brother to preach the gospel with the right ring to it. O praise God! our hearts were made to shout aloud while we listened to the truth. The meeting closed with victory on the Lord’s side. Some desired to have us stay longer, but feeling the Lord was through with us there we closed. Brother Reeves feels led of God to work in Gratiot and Saginaw counties. From here companion and I will go to Holt, Mich. where we expect to meet Brother and Sister Grover. Pray for us. Yours in Christ,

Elizabeth and J. R. Walter.

Dear Saints: I am glad to say I am still saved and resting on the promises of God, which are very precious to me. Have had some severe trials of my faith, but the Word says that the trial of our faith is more precious than gold, tried in the fire. I have been healed of severe pain about the heart. To God be all the glory. Amen.

My husband has been quite sick, took a severe pain in the left shoulder and continued several days, but by the help of the Lord, is better now. He requests the prayers of God’s dear children; says he is trusting in Jesus.

William M. Brooks was born in Hagerstown, Md., died in Springfield, Ohio, Jan 27, 1894. Aged 73 years. Although Mr Brooks lived 3 years over his alotted time given to man on earth, he made no preparations to meet his God in peace as far as I can learn. It is indeed sad to behold the lifeless form of one who died without hope in Christ.

Please explain Matt. 6:19; 19:21. Luke 3:11; 12:24-33; Acts 2:45; 4-34. 35; 1 Tim. 4:8 and 67, 8.

H. Ross.

Foraker, O.

To save precious time and space, we will ask the reader to take your testament and read those scriptures. Since they all bear on one general subject, we need not explain each one separate. The selling of property and turning of the proceeds over to the church recorded in Acts, was all done without any command of Christ or the apostles. It was their own voluntary act, as will be seen by what Peter said to Ananias. — Acts 5:4. Perhaps one reason the Spirit led so many to distribute their goods to the needs of all, was the fact the church was soon to be scattered abroad from Jerusalem, and all having property there lost the same. Though the Bible does not demand a perfect community of goods, full salvation destroys all greed and selfishness, so that whatever is in the hands of a holy child of God, is in God’s hands to use as he will, and to bless whoever most needs it in the household of faith, and even to relieve suffering among such as are without divine grace.

The young man who came to Christ being wealthy and covetous, it is probable that Christ saw no other way could he be saved but by an utter sell-out of his property and distribution to the poor. But just as really in heart every body who has earthly possessions must deliver the last mite over into God’s hands, himself to be no more the owner and controller, but only as a steward hold every cent subject to God’s orders, as his cause and his poor may need. And without such a transfer of all over into God’s hands, let no man presume to testify that you are wholly consecrated and sanctified.

The prohibition, “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth,” is not designed to forbid the accumulation of such property as will make you and family comfortable, and supply all your needs. Nor yet does it prohibit the enlarging of your possessions at all, if so be all is held by you as a mere steward, and God is really recognized as owner, and all is indeed held subject to his orders to whom it belongs. It is no sin to lay up treasures on earth to use for God’s glory, to consecrate to him the gain thereof, beyond the needs of such as depend upon you, and even to give portions of the principle whenever and wherever God shall make calls for the same. But the thing that is positively forbidden, is to lay up treasures to gratify your own greed or covetousness. “LAY NOT UP FOR YOURSELVES TREASURES ON EARTH.” That is to gratify selfish desires to be rich. Such are covetous, and covetousness is idolatry, and will curse the soul just as sure as the Bible is God’s book. If a person is laboring to accumulate means for the purpose of using to the glory of God, he will see many worthy places to lay it out in his cause. But if men seldom see any place to invest their money except in worldly projects, it proves that they are making money as an end, and not as a means to a righteous end. They labor to accumulate through the “love of money, which is the root of all evil,” and which is sure to drown men’s souls in perdition and destruction. A dear brother who recently was about destitute of daily food for himself and family, has been helped quite well by such as remember the poor, and this morning the brother sent us two dollars to send to the Lord’s foreign missionaries, who are in great need. How many professing to love God and are surrounded by more than they need, have thought to send to those dear self-sacrificing saints some of the Lord’s means? Ah, dear ones, take warning from the word of God and shun the “deceitfulness of riches.” Be it then understood that it is no sin to have lands, houses, herds of stock in abundance, or merchandise if all is handled to advance the cause of Christ. But if lavished upon self, there is the sin, this idolatry that damns the soul.

I am seeking and praying for light, will you explain

1. Gal. 2:7-9.

2. 1 Cor. 1:17. First clause.

3. Romans 15:16.

4. Gal. 2:14.

Your brother in Christ,

H. A. Long.

Ans. to first. “The gospel of the uncircumcision,” simply means, the good news of salvation to the Gentiles or uncircumcised nations. See Rom. 15:16. “The gospel of the circumcision unto Peter,” namely, Peter’s call of God was to labor among the Jews. The apostles, whose calling was to the Jews, recognized the other calling in Paul and Barnabas, and bid them God-speed by giving them the right hand of fellowship.

ANS. TO SECOND. Paul being a man of physical infirmities-see Gal. 4:13 – did not feel it was his calling to administer the ordinance of baptism in person as a rule, for while others more able in body could perform that duty, they could not fill his place in preaching the Word. Hence he only occasionally baptized the converts himself, not only because it was his custom and calling to devote his energies to preaching the gospel, and leave others the work of baptizing, but also at this place, lest any should say he baptized in his own name, or gloried in men. — 1 Cor. 1:14-16. Nevertheless he took pains to fulfill the commission of Christ at Corinth by having every person who professed faith in Christ receive the ordinance of baptism. Hence we read, And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized. — Acts 18:8. As many in that place as believed the gospel testified their faith by the ordinance of baptism.

ANS TO THIRD. This needs but little if any explanation. Being especially separated to the gospel of Christ to the Gentiles, he faithfully labored to bring them into an accepted condition before God, that is, “being sanctified by the Holy Spirit.”

ANS. TO FOURTH. The law was a “wall of partition between Jews and Gentiles.” The traditions of the elders had given it such an interpretation that forbade an Israelite to sit down to a table to eat with a Gentile. But Christ broke down this wall of partition and “made of twain one new man, so making peace.” — Eph. 2:14. But some of the converts from Judaism had not comprehended the true character of the Christian faith, and thought it necessary to still keep separated from even Christian Gentiles. It appears that Peter knew better than this, and ate with Gentiles until certain of these law keeping, semi- christians came, then to please them, he refused to eat with Gentiles. For this, Paul reproved him and Barnabas who had also been carried by their dissentions. These Judaizing professors also taught that Gentile converts should be circumcised, and this Paul reasons against in the latter part of the verse.

THE CHURCH.

_____

THE CLASS BOOK AND WHAT IT IS CALLED.

“Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven. Luke 10:20. “But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect.” Heb. 12:22, 23.

What is the class book called? A. “And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him [the sect beast — anti-christ] whose names are not in the BOOK OF LIFE [not a book filled with the names of dead professors] of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the woild.” Rev. 13:8. “And I intreat thee also, true yoke-fellow, help those women which labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlaborers, whose names are in the book of life.” Phil. 4:3. “He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.” Rev. 3:5. More sinners than real children of God have their names enrolled upon Babylon class books. See 1 Jno. 3:8-10; Jer. 17:13; 2:13. The class book of God’s church is kept in heaven by a Divine Being, while sect class books are kept on earth by some human being.

WHO KEEPS THIS CLASS BOOK?

A. “And of Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her: and the highest himself shall establish her. The Lord shall count, when he writeth up the people, that this man was born there. Selah.” Psa. 87:5, 6.

The divine Bookkeeper does not write the names of sinners on the book of life, “For the Lord counteth when he writeth up his people.” This saves us (who are the New Testament church) a great deal of trouble. And no human being is capable of doing such responsible work, but the almighty and infallible God. All other bookkeepers make mistakes.

WHO IS CLASS LEADER?

A. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” Rom. 8:14.

When people have salvation they have no use for a human class-leader or prayer book. The necessity for such things prove the heart to be void of the spirit of God. “For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.” Matt. 10:20. Suppose a child of God is in a sect and is moved to testify in meeting, he must not, for the class leader has not authorized him to do so yet; the Spirit says testify, but he is afraid to; but soon the leader comes around (perhaps when the spirit of testimony has left him) and says, “Brother speak a word for Jesus.” Now he gets up and delivers a dry story. Such is machine worship and no voluntary service to God in it. See Jno. 4:24; Acts 2:14; Rom. 8:26; Rom. 12:11.

WHAT IS THE DISCIPLINE?

A. Jesus said in his prayer unto the Father: “I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me.” Jno. 17:8.

For what purpose did Jesus give us his Father’s words? Let Paul answer. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” 2 Tim. 3:16, 17. What do men make creeds and disciplines for? Are they not made for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness? The disciplines of men sustain the same relalation to sects that the Bible does to God’s church. “All scripture, divinely inspired, is indeed profitable for teaching, for conviction, for correction, for that discipline which is in righteousness; so that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly fitted for every good work.” 2 Tim. 3:16, 17, [from EMPHATIC.]

We must obey the whole Bible. See James 2:10.

A caution. — “Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.” Prov. 30:6. “What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.” Deut. 12:32. “Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.” Deut. 4:2. “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” Rev. 22:18, 19.

In the above texts we see that nothing but the word of God is enjoined on the church, as articles of faith or practice. Men cannot make disciplines in harmony with the Bible; without adding to or taking away from the Bible, unless they reprint it. But people who adhere to creeds of men, tell us that theirs is founded on the Bible and is therefore like it. We say they are not like the Bible, and will give here a chance to prove the contrary. I will reward anyone with “YOUNG’S ANALYTICAL CONCORDANCE,” (retail price $5.50) who will bring me a discipline that is in perfect concord with the Bible. I quote below some of the creeds of men which acknowledge our stand on the above texts to be right, and then they teach to the contrary. We believe and teach that the Bible is the only infallible rule of faith and practice. Now let us see what creed-writers say. “The scriptures contain all things necessary to salvation; so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor can be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man, that it should be believed as an article of faith, or be thought requisite or necessary to salvation.” M. E. Discipline.

The Wesleyan and F. M. disciplines are like the M. E. on this point.

“It has been and still is the belief of the Society of Friends that the holy scriptures of the Old and New Testament were given by inspiration of God; that, therefore, the declarations contained in them rest on the authority of God himself, and that there can be no appeal from these to any authority whatsoever. * * * The scriptures are the only divinely authorized record of the doctrines which we bound, as Christians to accept, and of the moral principles which are to regulate our actions. No one can be required to believe, as an article of faith, any doctrine which is not contained in them; and whatsoever anyone says or does contrary to the scriptures, though under profession of immediate guidance of the Holy Spirit, must be reckoned and accounted a delusion of the devil.” Quaker Discipline.

We could quote many others which are the same in word and substance. If the Bible contains (as they say) all things essential to l.. and godliness, and nothing else is to be enjoined upon anybody, what use have Christians for the creeds of men? We answer, No use. See Col. 2:10. Why is it then that men make and enjoin them upon the people, and yet say in them, “The Bible is all we need.” I answer, the Bible is given for the government of God’s church only, and is therefore not intended to govern sects. When men departed from the true church and built sects, then came the necessity for new creeds and disciplines to govern them. Some people find fault with us for practicing what they preach in their disciplines, which say the Bible is all we need and then make another book and bind it on the people. They also require their members to live to both Bible and discipline, which is impossible. We say also that we do not need them, and then prove it by life and teaching. And on these grounds (God’s word) we ignore all the creeds and disciplines of men. God’s word forbids them and hence has no affinity with them. I believe what Peter says to be practically true. “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue.” 2 Pet. 1:3. — spoken A. D. 66.

There is no virtue in all the systems of men for Bible Christians. Many good humble children of God have been chilled through and frozen to death in the icy regions of sectism, but salvation and a good look at the church from a Bible- standpoint, will forever cure this fatal disease, and banish the traditions of men in the fogs of night so far that the shining light of heaven’s truth will totally eclipse them. People must become honest and willing before the Bible can instruct them.

B. E. Warren.

THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL.

Psa. 119:129.

_____

Trombley, Ohio.

I will write a little testimony. God bless you all, is my prayer. I am still praising God for an uttermost salvation, and for perfect victory in my soul. Oh, the sweetness and completeness there is in Christ Jesus, my blessed Lord! Hallelujah! The peace and the joy that comes from the Father above is more then my tongue can express. By the grace of God I keep myself unspotted from the world and keep in readiness for the coming of Christ.

Dear Saints: I feel that it is to the glory of God that I write my testimony this morning, for it is through him that I have the victory. My soul is filled with glory, and kept by his mighty power. We are able to have continual victory over the world, the flesh and the devil, by one Christ Jesus. Praise his name forever! By his grace I can testify that I am justified freely, and everything being on the altar, I have the blessed evidence that I am sanctified wholly. Your brother in the one church,

Dear Saints of God: I praise God for a full and free salvation that cleanses from all sin. I am saved and sanctified just now. I am so glad that God ever sent Bro. and Sister Bolds here to preach the true gospel, and I am so glad that I accepted the light when God gave it to me. My soul was hungering and thirsting after righteousness and now it is full. Praise the Lord! There are but few of us here, but we meet in the name of the Lord every Thursday night and have a good prayer meeting, for the Lord is always present. Praise his holy name! I am so glad that there is such a paper printed as the TRUMPET, for it is a feast to my soul to read it. It helps me along so much. I have felt for some time impressed to request the Trumpet family and all of God’s people to pray for me that my body may be healed of the rheumatism and neuralgia. Pray also that my husband may be saved. Your sister in Christ,

Dear Saints: I can say of a truth this morning that the blood of Jesus cleanses, me from all sin, and I know I am all bn the altar and the altar sanctifies the gift. Praise the Lord! Oh the Lord is so good to me. I feel that he is sinking me deeper into his holy will every day. He says in his holy word the willing and the obedient shall eat of the good of the land; and I have truly found it so. And I am so glad I can take Jesus for my physician. When I first heard holiness three years next spring I was confined to my bed about half of my time under the doctor’s care, and he not doing me any good. And said my case is hopeless, so far as human aid is concerned. Now the Lord is doing wonders for me, for he gives me strength to do my household duties, which I could not do before I learned to trust him. I have female trouble in one of the worst forms. I lave obeyed the word and done all I know to do, and I don’t think it is to God’s glory for me to be in this condition. I know he can heal me, and is ready and willing to do it for me; and now I am going to ask all the saints that read this to pray earnestly for my healing. I know the Lord has a work for me to do, for I hear his voice every day saying, Cry aloud and spare not; lift up thy voice like a trumpet and show my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins. Oh I don’t want to be a stumbling block in any one’s way, in regard to the healing of the body. I also wish to ask you to pray for a very dear sister who is sick. She was a Baptist missionary in Mexico for two years and a half, but for the last six months she has been confined to her bed and they think she will never be able to walk again. Pray that she may take Jesus for her physician, and that she might discern the true body of Christ, and be fully sanctified. Oh that she might believe! She has fought holiness all the time. Please pray for my husband that he might be willing to square up by the word God, and quit chewing tobacco. From a sister in the Lord,

Mrs. Etta Chenoweth.

Porterville, Cal.

Dear Readers of the Gospel Trumpet: As I have never written my testimony, that it might be published to the world, I feel the Spirit of God leads me to do so. About two years and a half ago, I was truly saved and sanctified; and anointed by the Holy Spirit to preach the gospel. I joined the Holiness sect, that I might have a home, not haying the light on the true church of God. I stayed with them for about three months, when the rottenness of some of the members showed up, and the leading members were in favor and did cover it up in the sect, and I demanded my name to be taken off of the sect list. I did not have any light on the church of God yet, but realized my calling and anointing for the work for the salvation of souls: so I left all to follow Jesus and see souls born into the kingdom. God wonderfully blessed my labor and I saw much fruit.

For six months I was proving the Lord on the line of faith, and preaching the everlasting gospel in my ignorant and unlearned way, after which I went into mission work in the city of Los Angeles, where I got the light on the church and settled it forever about joining to anything but God. I also met Bro. D. S. Warner soon after that time, and was ordained or recognized as a minister of the gospel in this evening light work. Since that time the Lord has not ceased to bless my soul and in every meeting let me see much fruit of my labor and has most wonderfully supplied all our needs. We have always had plenty for to day and some to spare. We left Los Angeles on the last day of August with my family and others, a little band for God, workers all new. But we were lit up with the Holy Spirit, and it is still burning and the flame is getting brighter and larger. Blessed be the name of our God! It is meat and drink to serve him.

We are at present in Porterville, and have rented one of the best halls in the town. God is with us in power to save, sanctify, and heal. I have not been able to touch on our experience, even since we left the city; not saying anything about deliverance when we were at death’s door, and the straightening out and healing of crooked, and paralyzed limbs; also a notable healing of a cancer in this place, about which we expect to have a testimony in a short time. A number have been saved and sanctified in this place. The Lord has the names of all that are truly saved. Pray much for us.

A. B. Davis.
