THE SEAL OF THE SPIRIT.

—:o:—

AND I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, &c. Rev. 7:2.

Some poor blind sectarians look for a literal, formal, or outward fulfillment of those Scriptures in the book of Revelations but they are symbols to be fulfilled in God’s spiritual Church (the Body of Christ) and spiritual babylon, (or sectism.) So this our text has a spiritual significance. The Advents claim the sealing is the keeping of the Sabbath, or rather the seventh day, or Jewish Sabbath. But praise God, it has a more blessed meaning than that, for Paul says: “Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect to an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath days: which were a shadow of things to come, but the Body is of Christ.” These all being shadows, pointed to Christ, but when Christ came He was the end of the shadows; hence deposing the Advents entirely. And they being mistaken in reference to the seal will not be among that great company with the seal of the living God. We desire to show that Christ was made our pattern. He received the seal, and as we are to be like Him, we are to have the same seal. For as He is so are we in this world. 1 John 4:17. Labor not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed — John 6:27. Now Christ was made our example; “For even hereunto wore ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow in His steps: who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth. 1 Pet. 2:21, 22. An example is to pattern after. As He is so are we in this world. — 1 John 4:17. And He was scaled, so we must be, or we are not like him; for if we are not like Him we will not see Him. When He shall appear, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself even as He is pure. — 1 John 3:2, 3. We are sealed and with the same seal that He was sealed with. Let us examine. Him hath God the Father sealed. How? And Jesus, when He was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and lo, the heavens were opened unto Him, and he saw the Spirit of God defending like a dove and lighting upon Him; and lo, a voice from Heaven, saying. This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Matt. 3:16, 17. Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will show judgment to the gentiles. — Matt. 12:18. Isa 42:1. And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from Heaven, which said: Thou art my beloved Son in thee l am well pleased. — Luke 3:22. And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. — 4:1. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He hath anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor. — Vr. 18. Isa. 61:1. For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed. — Acts 4:27. Now God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power, who went about doing good, and healing all that wore oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him. — Acts 10:38. Those numerous texts teach us how that Jesus our example was sealed by the Holy Ghost. The Word teaches us that we are to follow Him. If ye love me keep my commandments, and I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another comforter, that He may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth &c. — John 14:15-17. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. — Vr. 20. Here he promises the same Holy Spirit unto us by which he was sealed and anointed. John says, But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you; but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. — 1 John 2:27. But ye have an unction from the holy one, and ye know all things. — vr. 20. Which gives us the ability to teach the Word, and hidden things of the kingdom with authority; even as Christ taught, not as the scribes, but as one having authority. — Matt. 7:28, 29. Glory to God for the wonderful anointing of God! Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me etc. — Acts 1:8. And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from Heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. — Acts 2:1—4. Wonderful! wonderful!! Glory to God! Peter being full of the Holy Ghost stood up with the other apostles and preached Jesus and him crucified, saying. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear, vrs. 32, 33. Here, Peter says, that Jesus had received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost to those who believe on him. When the people heard the wonderful declaration of the Gospel, they cried out, What shall we do to be saved? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of your sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. When they saw the wonderful display of the Holy Ghost, they began to enquire into it; how to receive it themselves. Peter tells them how, and they should receive the promise; for the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call — vrs. 38, 39. And also upon the servants and upon the handmaidens in those days will I pour out my Spirit — Joel 2:29. And it shall come to pass that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be delivered: for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call — vr. 32.

“A garden inclosed is my sister, my spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain sealed.” Cant. 4:12. The sister or spouse is the Bride, the Lamb’s wife, the Church of God; which must have the seal upon her before she is fitted for the marriage of the blessed Son of God. Now the angel is sent forth with the seal of the living God. The angel is the holy minister with the everlasting Gospel to preach with the Holy Ghost sent down from Heaven, to seal those who will. “Now he which stablisheth us, with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit, in our hearts.” — 2 Cor. 1:21, 22. It is by the foolishness of the preaching of his ministers he saves them that believe. Having made known unto us the mystery (Greek, secret) of his will, according to his good pleasure, which he hath purposed in himself: that in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all tilings in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him — Eph. 1:9, 10. “Baptized by one Spirit into one body.” In one, when we are sealed. We cannot be sealed with the same seal when separated. We must and will be gathered in one (in Christ) when we are sealed. Glory to God! We cannot be divided and at enmity, and be in him. In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will — vr. 11. When we obtain a deed to our inheritance to our Fathers will it must receive, the stamp and seal of the office, administering the title. So we having obtained the inheritance in Christ must receive the impress of his nature, “that we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.” Paul here teaches that, if we, who first trusted in him, received, so ye do likewise. “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the Gospel of your salvation: in whom also, after that, ye believed, (after they were born of God — Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ, is born of God — 1 John 4:1) ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.” — Eph. 1:13, 14. This sealing of the Holy Spirit is the witness, title, substance or earnest of that inheritance until the restitution of all things in Christ, when our bodies as well as our souls are restored to first possession; which was purchased back, or redeemed by the offering of Christ as our ransom, when we were unable to help ourselves. This Scripture ought to forever establish the second work of grace; for we are not sealed until after we are born of God, or believe first; “after that ye believed, ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit.” Now believing is not the sealing, but we believe first, then comes the sealing after. Glory to God! “He that believeth and is baptized shall he saved.” First believe, then be baptized, then the promise is, Ye shall receive the gift or seal of the Spirit. To believe is to be born of God, as we have already shown. Then comes the promise: And ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost — Acts 2:38. Repenting and believing blend in the same work; “for godly sorrow worketh repentance unto salvation, not to be repented of.” And receiving the gift of of the Holy Ghost, and the sealing of the Holy Spirit, is the same; received by a second definite work of God’s grace in the heart. Hallelujah! This is so plain; why do people not see? It is received by faith, not by works. “By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” — Eph. 2:8. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. — Heb. 11:1. Hence we are saved by faith, receive the Holy Ghost by believing, and are sealed by believing; then this sealing is the very substance of the redemption of the purchased possession. When we can look forward to his coming, with the blessed assurance that we have a title clear, to the possession, with the King’s seal by the Holy Spirit.

And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption — Eph. 4:30. This sealing is the preserving process by which we are secure. Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called. — Jude 1. This preserving is the grace of God that keeps us sweet. “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope: and hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. — Rom. 5:1-5. In this experience is the only place where we have the promise of being kept. Peter, after speaking of the wonderful experience that they were in possession, says; Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time — 1 Pet. 1:5. Glory to God! we are hid in Christ and sealed. Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; who hath also sealed. — 2 Cor. 1:21, 22. For ye are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God. — Col. 3:3. As Noah was sealed, and preserved, so that the floods that swept over the face of the earth as a besom of destruction; let us be securely hid in God and sealed, that when the day of his wrath doth come, we will be kept from danger. How many do we see in our work that seem to enjoy a degree of spirituality; but when the wonderful evening light is preached, they reject it, and darkness ensues as certain, and they are nothing but poor formal professors. God help the dear people to open their eyes and see. Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. — Rev. 7:3. God is just withholding his indignation until he calls his own out of all the babylon confusion of this wicked world, and they are sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell. — Col. 1:19. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him — 2:9, 10. Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature. — 1:15. Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person — Heb. 1:3. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace — John 1:16. And we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image — 2 Cor. 3:18. And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him — Col. 3:10. According to his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue; whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. — 2 Pet. 1:3, 4. Glory to God! we are to be like him.

Now let me call your attention to an awful warning God gives us in his Word. He cried also in mine ears with a loud voice, saying, Cause them that have charge over the city to draw near, even every man with his destroying weapon in his hand. And behold, six men came from the way of the higher gate, which lieth toward the north, and every man a slaughter-weapon in his hand; and one man among them was clothed with linen, with a writer’s inkhorn by his side: and they went in, and stood beside the brazen altar. And the glory of the God of Israel was gone up from the cherub, whereupon he was, to the threshold of the house. And he called to the man clothed with linen, which had the wirter’s inkhorn by his side; and the Lord said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof. And to the others he said in mine hearing. Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house. And he said, unto them. Defile the house, and fill the courts with the slain: go ye forth. And they went forth, and slew in the city. — Eze. 9:1-7. The work of setting the mark is going on now by the preaching of the awful Word of God. And those who reject the awful truth, seem to be cut off, and utter darkness seems to follow. For thus saith the Lord God: Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out. As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered: so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country. — 34:11-13. Does not God here, set it forth in plain terms. He will seek out, and gather back from where they were scattered in the dark and cloudy day. The cloudy day was during Protestantism. “And bring them to their own land,” the Church of the living God; mount Zion, &c. Then in connection with those, read carefully the whole of the chapter, and also the 39th, and then the 9th of Rev. And it was commanded them that, they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads — vr. 5. “And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. The only chance for escape, is to obtain the seal of God, which is our sure retreat. “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?” If this is God’s plan of redemption, how can we expect the favor any otherwise. If the statute law of our country required the official seal and signature, the title for the possession would not be legal without it. “After that ye believed, ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise; which is the earnest,” or substance, or possession of our inheritance. Then if we have not the seal on the title, it is of no account; so when you present, your title to the court of heaven, it will not receive recognition: but you will be turned, away without any inheritance if not sealed. “That the offering up of the gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.” If we are acceptable thus, we are not acceptable without it. When you come to enter your case before the Lord of the possession, how will it be with you? Have you got the King’s seal? It you have not, your name will be erased from the record of the King. He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life — Rev. 3:5. To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in it a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it — 2:17. This is sealed. It is the hidden manna. While no man knoweth but he that has the name, Jesus says: “They are not of the world even as I am not of the world.” “If ye were of the world then would the world love its own; but ye are not of the world.” They may judge and condemn one because they do not understand the secret, yet he is sealed; or they may applaud another as an exemplary christian, because they have fellowship with them, but God has placed the seal, Hallelujah! And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord God; Speak unto every leathered foul, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side of my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice &c — Eze. 39:17. Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord God: for the day of the Lord is at hand: for the Lord has prepared a sacrifice, he hath hid the guests, Zeph. 1:7. For thus saith the Lord: For this is the day of the Lord God of hosts, a day of vengeance that he may avenge his adversaries. — Jer. 46:10.

And he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fouls that fly in the midst of Heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshiped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his month: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh — Rev. 19:17-21. And his name is called. The Word of God. — vr. 13. KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. vr. 16. The sword that should smite those that had not the mark of the living God, but the mark of the beast, is the sword of the Spirit, or the Word of God. The white horse on which he rode, denotes purity; by which he will judge righteously, in equity, knowing nothing but purity; and all that do not measure up to the straight pure Word of God, will be slain by the sword proceeding out of his mouth. The word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day, — John 12:48. But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. — Deut. 18:20.

Beloved saints of the Most High God; let us not grieve the Holy Spirit of promise, by which we are sealed until he shall be revealed in the last day. And to those rejecting this word of our God, and the seal in their forehead, reject no longer, but submit yourselves unto his holy mandate. Your servant for Jesus’ sake.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

—:o:—

As a number of the brethren have failed to send in their news from the field, we can only report from private letters received. But we are happy to say that the work is moving on gloriously in every direction, resulting in the salvation of many precious souls. Bro. Warner and company are still at Fenwick Ontario. Bro’s Speck and Kilpatrick report a glorious work in progress in Kansas, and many souls saved. Since sending in the news of the Bangor meeting, Bro. Michels reports a wonderful work being done at that place; deep conviction settling upon the hearts of the people, and souls are being saved from their sins. The indications are that a great work will be done for the Lord at that place.

Bro. Charles Howe, from near Jackson Ohio, sends a special and very eurnest call for some of God’s messengers, filled with the Holy Ghost, to come to that place at once, or as soon as practical, to preach the Gospel in its purity. There are four school-houses near his place, also a hall can be procured in town. This is a new field opening up for the Gospel to be preached, and we think a great work can be done there, if some one, called of God, will go at once; “for the fields are white already to harvest.”

Bro. John O. Smith from Noble, Mich., also sends an earnest appeal for some one to come to his place to preach the Gospel. His little girl has been afflicted for some time, and ho believes the Lord will heal her, to His glory, and asks the special prayers of the dear saints, that the work may be speedily done. Dear ones do not forget this request, and any one feeling led of the Lord to go there, do so in the name of Jesus. We are almost daily in receipt of calls from every direction, for some one to come and preach the Gospel in its purity to perishing souls who are starving for want of spiritual food. “Truly the harvest is great, but the laborers are few.”

Bangor, Mich.

Dear Saints of the Most High God, greeting: -May peace and joy be multiplied unto you through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen!

I feel led to testify through the TRUMPET that I am saved and sanctified through the blood of the everlasting Covenant, and am kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time, I want to testify that Cod is using me to His glory and for the salvation of perishing souls. Since the report of dear Bro. Palmer, of the Cheshire meeting, we had a meeting in Lee at. Bro. Smith’s, where the Lord blessed us and saved some souls; and thence we went to Kendall Mich. where we opened up fire against the enemy. A few were saved while we were there; but leaving conviction on the people, several have been saved since we left. Praise God, the work is going on. From Kendall we came to Bangor where we have moved with our family, and dear brother Frank Smith and wife; dear Bro. Reed from Berrien Springs is here also. We opened up this holy war the 4th of Jan., in the name of Jesus Christ, and we have the victory and assurance that God will save precious souls in this place. Now dear Saints of God, pray for us that the Word of the Lord may have free course; and I am praying God to send some fire baptized help to this place. We can have the use of the hall for two months, and will use it as long as the Lord wills.

From your Bro. in the love of Jesus.

Dear and Beloved Saints of the Living God: — Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and our Savior Jesus Christ.

We are saved and well, being kept by the power of God unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Praise God for ever! Blessed be the name of the Lord! It is little over one year since the good Lord permitted us to come to this place to work with our hands, and preach His divine Word wherever there was an opening; but it appears at present, the way the Lord is leading ns and has been for some time, that we must go elsewhere: for the fields are already white to harvest, and the laborers are so few. We are fully in the hands of the Lord to be used in any way or any where; filled with fire and a burning desire to see poor perishing souls brought to the foot of the cross; and by repentance, Jesus the Lamb of God will wash their sins all away. Any of the dear saints in this state or elsewhere, wanting us to come, we will come in the name of Jesus, holding up Christ and Him crucified, in this wilderness of sin. Dear ones, pray for us. Your Bro. and sisters, saved, sanctified and kept by the mighty power of God through faith unto salvation.

St James, Mo.

My Dearly Beloved Brethren: — May God wonderfully bless you, one and all. Amen!

We are again engaged in a battle here in St James. Glory to Jesus who is captain, and never lost a battle. Hallelujah! In our last report we were going to Bunker Hill Ill. We went in the name of Jesus with the everlasting Gospel to preach to the people of Bunker Hill. God was with us in power. Bro’s Otta Bolds and Thos. Carter were with me: they are blessed young men, good soldiers for Jesus. God bless these brethren.

God done a blessed work, and enabled us to pour out the vials of God’s wrath on the beast. Hallelujah! some rejected while others received it. Glory to Jesus! Among those who accepted the truth was dear Bro. Frank Patterson, a minister of the F. M. sect. He heard the voice from Heaven, Come out of her (babylon) my people. — Rev. 18:4. He obeyed, came out free; was baptized and ordained an elder in the Church of God. Hallelujah! One was sanctified wholly, four were baptized, two elders ordained; had a blessed ordinance meeting. Praise the Lord! The F. M. meeting house belonged to Patterson, he built it with his own money, on his own land; it was built for the M. E. sect, but now it belongs to God: for the worship of God only. Hallelujah! Bro. Patterson took down the name of blasphemy (The F. M. Church.) O praise the Lord for this grand victory. God bless the dear ones in Bunker Hill, Ill. Bro. Thos. Carter stayed in Ill. with Bro. Otta Bolds, while I returned to St James Mo. There have been five saved and added to the Church here since my last report. To God be all the glory. O hallelujah to our God for ever and ever! Amen!

We will continue the meeting, the Lord willing, until over Sabbath, then go about ten miles Southeast to hold meeting in the name of Jesus. Pray for us and the work. Glory to God! we are on the forward move with eternal victory, fire, power and glory in our souls. My soul is hound for heaven and immortal glory at the right hand of God. O how I praise the Lord for the way He has led me in the past year; and I pray I may be more useful the coming year. Pray for me dear saints. I wish all the saints a happy successful New Year. Your free Bro. sanctified wholly. Hallelujah!

Dwight, Mich.

Dear Saints of God everywhere, greeting: — We are saved and kept, and God is with us in mighty power, and our souls are kept in constant peace and love, hid away in the secret place of His pavilion.

O bless the holy name of Jesus! We triumph over all this world of sin, and we reign in this life by one man Jesus Christ. Bless His name!

We held a few meetings in East Jordan, and a few came to the cross seeking Jesus, and found Him precious. But as the building was a store building, and a family lived overhead, and the lady was taken sick, we closed in Jesus’ name. While we were there we had a severe battle with beast power. Mormonism, or more commonly known as the Latter Day Saints doctrine, which withstood us greatly; but thanks be unto our God who gives us the victory through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The beast power was completely subdued, and left the field to Zion’s sons. Hallelujah to God and the Lamb. This Morman power is certainly the worst horn of the beast that we ever came in contact with. God deliver the people from it for Jesus’ sake.

On Christmas day all the saints of God from different points convened at the school-house in Wilson, near dear brother Haley’s; and as they commenced to arrive, the power of the great Triune God commenced to descend and fill both the house and our souls until it seemed as though we were sitting in the midst of Heaven. O hallelujah! how our own soul was filled until it flowed out in praises unto Him who hath washed us in his own blood and made ns whiter than the snow. Amen!

And as the saints kept coining and joining the assembly of God, it was like adding fuel to the fire, until you could not discern the noise of shouting for the noise of weeping. Truly we did realize that God giveth good measure, pressed down and shaken together. There were about fifteen or twenty who came forward to the altar; some for pardon and some for sanctification, all of which claimed the witness of the Spirit to their souls. In the evening we all were conveyed to Bro. Haley’s, and there we followed the footsteps and example of our leader Jesus Christ, in washing the saints feet and breaking bread. O how it did fill our hearts to see God’s chosen ones so willing to follow this command: for indeed we do this not by constraint, but of a willing mind and a glad heart. Bless His name! O how the melting love did make our hearts run together; truly they that are joined to the Lord are of one Spirit. There were twenty-seven who took part in the ordinance service, after which they all separated and went their several ways, praising the holy one of Israel.

We expect to hold a few meetings here at Dwight, and then go to Ironton and commence battle with sin and for King Jesus, as a house has been prepared and they are waiting for us to come.

Dearly beloved Brethren, pray for us that we may be kept low and humble at the feet off Jesus. Your blood-washed brother and companion in tribulation, in patience, waiting for Jesus.

Kittannino Pa., Jan. 4, ’89.

Dear Brethren: — God bless you all abundantly. Amen! After enjoying a precious season with the saints at Hazzard, and seeing several converted and sanctified, we had a very good ordinance meeting. Bro. Peter Greggs, and some of the saints from Henderson are to continue the meeting and attend to the baptizing of those who desire it.

On the 17th of Dec. Bro. Latshaw sent his team for us; we went to his place and commenced meeting in the school-house the 18th. We enjoyed a glorious meeting with the little ones at that place. Although they have had many trials to endure, the Lord gave them victory and saved three souls. On the 25th we had a very precious ordinance meeting. All the little ones were present, notwithstanding bad weather. We left several under conviction that we believe will yet be saved.

We stopped one night with the saints at Pittsville, then commenced meeting at Dotterers. We were there nearly a week; one saved. We then went to St. Petersburg and met with the saints one night. They have their meetings every Sunday, and Thursday evening in a large Hall. It would be well if some of the brethren could go there and hold a meeting. We expect to go to Blanco tomorrow, where we expect to meet Bro Koonce who is on his way from Fayette Co., where he has been laboring this winter.

Yours in Jesus, saved to the uttermost.

Praise the Lord! The Church at LaFayette, also at Hamilton are both on standing ground and in a flourishing condition. Had meeting Christmas at LaFayette, and at Hamilton Saturday and Sunday last, with good success. It seems like old times. Praise the Lord! The prospect looks favorable for a revival in the work this winter.

Albany Ill., Jan. 2, 1889.

Dear Saints of the Most High: — May joy peace and mercy be with you all through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Having received from God the Father the Divine assurance that Isa. 45:2, 3 (“I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of iron: and I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the Lord, which callest thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.”) was ours for the special work that was impressed on our hearts, we left home on the morning of the loth of Dec. for this place; and were met at the Garden Plains Depot by Bro. Jacob Byers and coveyed to his home the same day. We commenced meeting the next day in the Slocum Street School-house, in the name of the Lord. The Lord was with us in much power from the very commencement of the meeting. On Monday the dear Lord most graciously commenced the work of saving souls. The main part of the Church here was in good working order, under the very efficient labors of our dear Bro. J. W. Byers and his co-laborers in the Gospel; for which we render all the glory and praise to God. Hallelujah to His name! We held meeting nearly two weeks in the School-house, nearly every night. The day meetings were at private houses, at which time we had altar services which were very precious in saving souls and strengthening believers. On the 18th sister McCormack from Keokuk Co. Iowa, and on the 21st sister Fisher from the TRUMPET OFFICE, both of which have been very efficient laborers in the work of the Lord: came to assist us in the work. Bro. and sister Gray, who were on a visit to sister G’s. parents, (father and mother Byers) were most gloriously saved and delivered from babylon. They live in Benton Co. Iowa, thus the glorious evening light is spreading in every part. May the dear Lord keep them sweetly saved and hid away in the Rock, free from all sin and isms of night. During the whole time the day meetings were very precious, but we would mention one especially, held at Bro Byers’, and also one at Bro. Hurd’s, where God came down upon us, settling all (ho saints down into all the will God, casting out unclean spirits and setting captive souls at liberty. Our hearts cry out: Praise the Lord for all His wondrous works and love to the children of men and for the mighty power of God made manifest in these last days. We have kept no account of the consecrations made, but feel safe in saying there have been twenty or more, for which we give God all the glory. We have now commenced meeting in the town of Albany. The saints have rented a hall for one year; it is quite well filled every night by anxious listeners, and we feel that the prejudice against this way is being removed, and that many will be saved. We had a glorious meeting last night with three souls at the altar, all of which claimed a satisfying portion in Jesus Christ. Hallelujah to His name for victory over the powers of darkness. JAN. 4. Since writing the above, there have been several consecrations in our day meetings, and good congregation in the hall every evening. The glorious power of God is resting upon us, and fills our hearts with praises to our dear Redeemer for His wonderful works to the children of men. Our testimony is that we are saved and sanctified just now. Praise God and the Lamb forever. Amen!

these parts. In Schuylkill Co., the Lord has a number of children who have not bowed their knee to Baal, and who rejoiced at the sound of the pure, unmixed Gospel, and sinners also who expected to hear some errors advanced were ashamed; having no evil thing to say of us, and admitted it was the truth of God. There were none converted. They wish a Grove Meeting next summer at Auburn, Schuylkill Co. Pa. From there we went to Philadelphia, on our way to Union Town, Maryland, where sister M. A. Creager lives. We stopped a few days in Philadelphia and attended a meeting held by the “Heavenly recruits” in that city. They have come out of the Methodist sect and Salvation Army. How far short it comes of the glorious assemblies of God’s free saints, whose voice as the loud thunder roll along.

We love dear Bro. Haas much in the Lord, and believe him beloved of God. This Bro. is pastor of the congregation in Phila. and also President of the Association. ‘‘Thou shall not take a stone for a corner from Babylon any more at all” the Word says, but here is one; another Association with man as head, a president.

God’s people appreciate freedom. God is moving on, and everything that does not keep up with God will surely be found among the stragglers and mixed multitudes of the wilderness.

From there we went to Union Town Md., where the curse of Winebrennerianism has made God’s heritage a withered and blasted wilderness. I never saw more benighted people: cursed children who have forsaken the right way; children in whom there is no faith; utterly darkened. I never saw a people more given up of God than they, and what good spears of grass there might be are so kept down by thick chois that it is impossible for anything to grow. We are now in the most extreme County of Pensylvania, next to New Jersey. laboring with a brother who has three meeting-houses and congregations. They put him out of the Dutch ..arm sect because he held revival meetings and got people saved. The people are hungering for full salvation. May the dear Lord sanctity their souls. The blood cleanses me from all sin.

Your saved Bro.

Walkerton Ind., 4, 1889.

Dear Saints: — We are praising the Lord for complete victory over the devil and all his satanic influences. We have the never failing glory in our souls. The Lord is with us in power, and we are doing all for Him we are able to do. Wo go in the Eternal strength of Jehovah. We have preached a good part of the time: commenced a meeting in the Advent meeting house south of La Paz. The Lord helped us to give much light. From there we went to Grovertown and held meeting in the school-house close to Bro. Alien’s. The little Church there was much strengthened. We stayed there only a few days. There was great excitement in babylon over Chritmas-trees and sect carousals.

We came here to Walkerton in the name of Jesus and Lord is with us in power. Quite a number have been saved. Sister Wolfenberger, formerly of this place but now residing near Garret Ind., was here on a visit, and through her exhortation and prayers some of her friends were saved. The little Church here have become a unit for God. Some, we believe, have received great wisdom in the line of relinking. Those satan sends out to rebuke, as Matt. 7:3 says, have a beam in their own eye, therefore are not able to pull the mote out of their brother’s eye.

They having a harsh spirit, and not obeying the Scripture have done much harm. May the Lord bless them and ever keep them humble.

Jan. 11. Meeting closed for the present unless the Lord opens some more convenient place. There were several consecrations, and the saints have been settling deeper into the will of God.

Last Thursday eve we met in an ordininance meeting in the name of Jesus, O what a melting time! We are truly blessed who know these things and do them. Yesterday was a blessed day to us; several consecrations were made. The Lord is wonderfully healing and strengthening me; praise His name! Many thanks to the dear saints for their prayers in my behalf. Keep praying for God to make us very useful in His vineyard in bringing precious souls to Jesus.

Your Bro. and Sister saved and sanctified.

Dear Brethren, Beloved of the Lord: — In the name of Jesus I feel led to write to the TRUMPET. We are saved to the uttermost, glory to Jesus, and kept by the power of God through faith, ready to be reveal in in the last time. Praise Jesus!

Since we came to this place, about two and a half months ago, we have had some sore afflictions. The dear Lord seeing fit to suffer wife to bo sorely afflicted, and for nearly three weeks she was most of the time compelled to keep her bed; but praise the dear Lord for ever, He was a present help in every time of need, from the first of her afflictions. We having been here and labored through the meeting reported by Bro. Jacobson, in which meeting there was some good done; a few consecrated and renewed their covenant and obtained a good experience. Two went down into the water and were buried by immersion into death. Glory be to Jesus! this was a glorious baptismal service to our souls, and the dear Lord wonderfully manifested Himself to us on this occasion. We remained a few weeks, laboring with our hands as we had opportunity in day time, and meeting with the little Church Wednesday nights and on the Lord’s day, where the dear Lord wonderfully manifested Himself to us; and some have been converted and others have been brought to a closer examination of their consecration, and found they were not dead to all sin, and were willing to confess the same and go down before God and die, and pray God to keep them dead so there can be no resurrection of self. O God help the dear ones every where to get “dead INDEED unto sin and alive to God.” O that all would get the right conception of God’s holiness and GET it and KEEP it; and get out of the old rut of babylon of having to go to the altar every few meetings to consecrate. Die once for all; “dead indeed.” Anion! But if you find you have not reached the point, keep on going till you are dead. But I am fully persuaded that the dead indeed point can be readied by every one at the first time consecrating for sanctification if they go at it right: putting all on the altar, and faith on the side of consecration. “For without faith it is impossible to please God.” Be sure you are justified, free from condemnation.(Rom. 8:1) abiding in Christ (John 15:10.) You must be abiding in Christ if you are in a condition for the purging. See 1 John 8:6. And not only does God demand this of you before you are in a condition to consecrate for sanctification, but let us see 1 Thess. 22. We find in this text that God demands of all, a state or experience in which they must be abstaining from all APPEARANCE of evil. And then “the very God of peace sanctify you wholly.” Dear ones, for Christ’s sake be sure and make no mistake in this matter.

During our stay here we went to Waynes Field, Auglaize Co. and held a few days meeting, and a few souls were saved. Let all the saints pray for these dear souls at Waynes Field.

From there we returned to this place, and expected to start for our home on Christmas morning, but my wife was taken violently ill, and about two o’clock in the morning we thought perhaps the dear Lord was going to take her to be with Hint; but the Lord soon assured us of his willingness to help us in this time of need, and we called on Him and He immediately gave relief; and by exposure she became worse again, but the Lord has raised her up. We thank God for it all. For the glory of God I want to say that the dear Lord has healed my lungs, and I enjoy unlimited health. O glory to Jesus, I do appreciate His goodness to me. When the brethren prayed and layed on hands, it appeared that the cavities of my lungs were filled with the mighty power of God. Hallelujah! Bray for your Bro. and sister.

REPENT YE FALSE REVERENDS.

—:o:—

THE custom of babylon papers, and even the sect holiness sheets, of calling preachers Reverend, is an abomination in the sight of God. The word Reverend only occurs once in the Bible, Psa. 111:9. “He sent redemption unto His people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and Reverend is his name.” All can see that this is ascribed to God Himself, and not to any man. The real root meaning of Reverend is: “Entitled to respect mingled with fear” — Webster. God has no lords on earth to be worshiped. Since the Bible only ascribes Reverend to God, to call men Reverend is to deify them, and rob God. That such pompous titles as “Grand Master,” “Worshipful Master,” “Lord,” “Reverend,” “Right Reverend” and “Most Reverend,” should be used in secret orders, Romanism and sect babylon generally, is nothing to be wondered at, because she is all a “habitation of devils, and a hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of unclean birds,” and every thing that impiously insults God may be expected; but to see professed holiness editors still following the abominations of Egypt, and Sodom, is astonishing to us. The Mich. Holiness Record and about all others, thus ascribes worship to men. Thus the Highway disgustingly sets before his readers every preacher named as one to be feared, trembled at and worshiped. And still more extremely bigoted and disgusting does homage to himself, and sets himself up before all who see his paper, as a god in the land, and courts their worship by calling himself “Rev. Isaiah Reed.” Shame on such bigotry, and abominable inconsistency. A reed shaken in the wind, joined the M. E. dancing and harlot daughters of babylon, thus partaking of her sins, and receiving of her plagues, and being exceedingly drunk on her wine, puts himself in the place of God Himself, and blows his own horn in self worship. Let all the earth stand in awe of me, for I am the “REV. Isaiah Reed.” Let these two editors named, repent, and put away the evil of your idolatrous doings, and we shall be happy to give you credit for the same; and let all others who follow their pernicious ways speedily reform, lest ye also be made ashamed by the blast of a godly rebuke.

__________

The Mich. Holiness Record says, “Denominational pride, and a spirit of bigotry seems to creep into every church” — Evidently he means every denomination or sect. And yet he justifies the existence of all these evil prone sects, calls them the Church, and thinks it necessary to live in one of them. The Lord help Bro. Shaw to get done with all these last day apostatizing concerns of men, and learn that we are complete in Christ alone. No pride, or bigotry, or any other works of the devil can creep into Christ. Therefore, to have a pure Church join and preach only Christ. Just as sure as men join any thing else but Christ, whether it be a sect, association, hand or religious army the thing they join, as they think to better serve Christ, becomes a rival of Christ, attracts attention from Him and salvation, and rallies around the thing, and its adherents drift off to “worship the creature more than the Creator.” The soul that adheres to Christ only, can not by that position become bigoted. For we cannot to highly adore and magnify the Lord Jesus.

The Editor adds, “Nothing but pure Christlike love, that makes God’s children one as He and the Father are one, can prevent this.” Sects are divisions and breed pride and bigotry; but the love of God makes us one. So put away the sect idols, and be filled with Christ and the love of God, and the curse of sectism with all its progeny of evils will disappear.

__________

A NEW RIVAL COMMANDER.

—:o:—

WE see in an exchange that a holiness man in Calafornia by the name of Newton, has organized another branch of bahylon, de nominated “THE ARMY OF THE LORD.” The founder “is in general command.” He says; “It is simply to cover a long felt necessity, a simple system by which the work and workers can be cared for mid all the pressing conflicting elements in the churches and out of them in the holiness work. Stations are being opened just as fast as we can get fully consecrated workers to fill them, and when known, we fill a long felt want in the great work of saving men from sin.”

NOTE.

Surely the folly and ignorance of men furnish sport for the devil. Blind sect-educated babylon holiness priests imagine they can organize a system that will save souls, and when they have framed up the new god, the devil sets them to worship the thing, and rally around not beholding the Head, (Christ) from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God:” — Col. 2:19. What utter folly to hold anything else but Jesus only, and to expect men’s tinkered systems will save souls, when God’s Church only increases with the increase of God. Therefore, “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the traditions of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in Him dwelleth all the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in Him, which is the head of all principality and power.” — Col. 2:8-10. “And gave Him to be the head over all things to the Church which is His body, the fulness of Him filleth all in all.” — Eph 1:22, 23. Christ here asserts His sole headship over all things to the Church But Mr. Newton. Booth, and other founders doubt the ability of Christ to govern His whole Kingdom and Church, or presume themselves more capable, and hence usurp the commandment themselves. How does the self-commissioned Newton’s command compare with these words of Christ? “One is your master, and all ye are brethren.” “Behold I have given him for a witness to the people, a Leader and Commander to the people.” — Isa. 55:4. Does this prediction refer to Gen. Booth, Gen. Newton, or is it Jesus Christ? This is ascribed to Him, (vr. 3,) who is the “Sure mercies of David.” Namely Christ, the root and offspring of David. Then all other Lords and Commanders of God’s people are rivals of Christ, and are sitting in the temple and place of God, showing himself to be God.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon His kingdom to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from hence forth even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel.” — Isa. 9:6-8.

“The government shall be upon His shoulder.” Mr. Newton and other self-imposed Lords over God’s heritage are not needed to shoulder the government, nor to assist Christ in bearing the same.

What is the new thing just hatched in Cal.? “The Army of the Lord.” “A long felt necessity.” “A long felt want in the great work of saving souls from sin.” Then Peter made a mistake when he said that, already in his day. God had “given us all things pertaining to life and godliness.” How could men be saved from sin before this California invention, which is a necesity in the work? “The Army of the Lord.” Now that little word “of” indicates the origin, possession, or both. Did the Lord Jesus Christ create that new thing on the Pacific coast in the Nineteenth Century? If so, why did He not in the beginning give us the needed thing, instead of His Church and means of salvation which were so defective as to leave a “long felt want in the great work of saving men from sin.” Shall we not more truthfully conclude that the new plan of salvation so long needed, was devised by Newton, and “The Army of the Lord” is really “The Army of Lord Newton:” because created by him and coadjutors, and he is in “general command” of the same. So he is Lord, and the army is his.

“Stations are being opened as last as we can get fully consecrated workers to till them.” Fully consecrated to whom, may I ask? To God, or to the human Lord! If to God, does He not know enough to find work for them? Can He not station His men as well as to tell Philip tojoin himself to the Eunich’s chariot, separate Paul and Barnabus to the Gentiles, and Peter and John to the Jews? Can He not by the leading of the Spirit, the guiding of judgment, and the means of visions etc., station His ministers as well as show Paul to go to Macedonia, and direct the course of all the holy ministers anciently? Yea, we thank God that no human Lords are needed to-day. All God’s pure, Spiritually illuminated workers who are out of babylon, and discern the body of Christ, and the voice of its Head, are stationed, employed, and used by the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, through the operation of the Spirit. This Scripture, thank God, is just as time in His Church to-day as ever. i. e., “It is the same God that worketh all in all.” — 1 Cor. 12:4. God directs and works in all the members of the body of Christ, all His own will and good pleasure. He finds plenty to do for all who are consecrated to Him. He knows just where He can use each instrument to the best advantage, far better than any human Lord, babylon, Bishop, or stationing committee. All the creeds, system and organisms on the face of God’s earth, save the body of Christ, whether sects, hands, associations, or man-Lord ruled armies, either spring from ignorance of God, the body of Christ, and the all operating Spirit of God; or else from an ambitious thirst for lordship, honor and prominence. Jesus Christ and His free saints have no need of any of the “lords many, and gods many,” to rule for them, and to rule over them. If any person disputes this, and would assert that we cannot get along without a man devised system, thank God! we are prepared to tell you otherwise. For the last eight years the work of salvation deep and thorough, has been spreading steadily without any system or man-manipulation. Every local Church gets preaching whenever God sends it. Every preacher goes as freely as the birds that fly through the green forests, just as the Spirit of God leads them, and pays all of life’s needs by the means that Cod puts into the hearts of the people to give. Praise God for freedom from all the yokes of the devil, of babylon priestcraft, and human Lordism. Facts demonstrate the practical perfection of the Church that Christ founded. For two hundred years the Gospel was rapidly promulgated, and salvation work effectually carried on without any other system than each child of God abiding in Christ, “the way, the life and the truth, and being led by the Spirit. And the same Jesus by His Word and Spirit, since the long apostasy into men’s creeds and systems is rejected by the holy saints of God, now leads them in harmonious and successful operations, a d bring forth more clear and deep fruits of salvation in His Church than ever have appeared under the crafts of men on earth. When will relgious bigots cease to insult Jesus Christ by their rival works of the devil, winch accuse Christ and His Church of insufficiency?

AN AWFUL WARNING.

—:o:—

O! BEWARE how you promise God and do not. A lady in Michigan who was once saved, let go her hold on Christ and fell into sin. She promised God she would serve Him after getting married and settled in life. She married and months passed on but she still lived in sin. She went to a dance, and from that time she had an afflicted limb, greatly swollen. She suffered greatly for months, and still unsaved. Finally an artery bursted and she rose up in bed and tried to stop the blood. She that instant turned blind; she cried out. “My God! My God!! have mercy on my poor soul,” and bled to death very soon, leaving no evidence of deliverance. O pay your vows to the most high God, lest darkness, death and damnation suddenly seize upon your soul, and ye sink in the night of despair.

Dear Saints: — May the everlasting God fill you with all the fulness of His love and keep you standing in the liberty wherewith Christ has made you free.

I would love to see some of the true saints of God at this place to preach the straight. Word of God to the people, for the Word of God has never been preached in its purity in this place. I hope it will not be long before God will send some of His dear children here to hold meetings. I continually pray that many souls may be saved before it shall be too late.

If any true saint of God, filled with the Holy Ghost, feels led of God to come here to preach the Word and need the money to come with, let me know by letter, stating how much the fare will be and I will try by the help of God to raise the money. You will also be met at the train.

BAD TO WORSE.

A Methodist Missionary’s Appeal to the Home Church,

ON CHURCH SPREEING.

C. B. Ward.

—:o:—

LAST week brought to our table an official “Advocate” containing on account of “corn husking” in * * * * M. E. Church in which pretty girls amuse a large party for an hour or so “corn husking” in the Church. Recently, another “Advocate” told of the auctioneering “the prettiest young lady” as an entertainment and means of raising money for Church-work. This to, was performed in the Church, the pastor presiding. Two weeks ago a local paper received gave an account of a Methodist dancing school, recognized by the pastor, and taught by a Methodist on religious principles, to keep the young people of the Church from going off to the world for amusement not under religious auspices. Not long since a Methodist paper brought us the news of a Methodist raffle for a big cake with a gold ring in it. Still another Methodist Church had a gathering in the house of God where men were blind-folded and made to pay heavy forfeits if they made mistakes in identifying young ladies by feeling only, and we could quote a score more as shocking events in Methodist Churches, for the most part in the cities of the United States, in the last 12 months, all for the ostensible object of getting money. I have found myself over and over asking myself way out here in India, Can it be so, that these things do occur in M. E. Churches? We can no longer doubt they do, and they are becoming very common in many city churches, and meet with much favor among many Methodist preachers and people, can not much longer be questioned. A heavy tide is setting in among a certain class of Methodists in worldliness. Just as all over the land there has been a wonderful revival of holiness among Methodists; so satan has set one of his afloat.

What will the harvest be of all this worldliness? Heresies, divisions, independents, death, blight and a withering curse. In these days a strong desire is everywhere met with to keep Methodism a unit. But without a holy reformation, puting out all their worldliness and lustful, sensual, devilish money getting, sinner-pleasing sprees, Methodism can not stand a unit. If we mistake not, the drift in the line of the intellectual and popular and non-spiritual is so strong, that legislation can not turn the tide. Nothing but a holy reformation can save Methodism to holy conquest in the future, as in her early history. Doubly has holiness become the only hope of methodism? A generation of Methodists are upon us, who don’t read our history and biography, and deny our standards boldly, in print and life, on the point of entire sanctification. Hundreds of Methodists can now be found who hold Calvinistic and Zinzendorfian theories on the subject of holiness. We wish we were mistaken about all this, but our eyes and ears will not let us doubt longer, that perilous times are come! Had Methodist preachers and people been true to God and their standards and experience, the “Holiness Factions” that sadden so many holy hearts and furnish a text many call “come; out-ism,” would never have been.

Oh, that our bishops could see this and leave the Congregationalist and Presbyterians to do the lecturing, and begin, by example and preaching and exhortation, to call Metoodists to their knees everywhere. We have more of everything than spiritual energy. Machinery, education, money and new fangled methods get far the biggest share of attention now, with little of the prayers and faith that made method- ism an irresistable soul-saving energy without the blemishments. Bishop Foster gets sharp criticism when the worldly tide of things gets his lash. Oh that he would once more set things in a blaze under the lire of holiness as he did in 1849 and a few years after.

Out in India, some of us mourn over some things that come out hero in Methodist print. We wish the people of India might never hear of these “church sprees” and money grabbing enterprises. The thing is catching. We want holy fire, not fun, frolic, and popularity. If you think this sad sigh from an old-fashioned Methodist soul in India will awaken any sympathy for us here, and holy zeal to stem the tide at home, any praying for the Holy Ghost to work, give it your readers. May God make you and Bro. McDonald and Bro. Hughs hotter and hotter for the truth and the whole truth. We pray for you as we do for all the holiness editors of America. Remember us here. We are trying to cry “holiness” over India as we have ability. Pray much for us. Your brother sanctified wholly.

BABYLON WE KNOW IS FALLEN

—:o:—

HENCE we have very little space to give to an exhibition of her ungodly deeds; they not being needed to convince men who have their eyes open occasionally as they pass along life’s journey, much less those who are illumined of the Holy Spirit. But the above, published by the Standard, a leading Methodist paper, and reprinted by the Fireb land, of September 6, 1888, a paper published at Shenandoah Iowa, so strikingly shows the utter depravity of Methodism, and the horrible perplexity of poor souls that live in her bonds, and yet have some sense of shame, and at least a love of good morals, that it deserves publication in the TRUMPET. What must be the confusion of face that befalls the poor missionary in the far off heathen lands, lo see the literature of his own sect bring to him the programs of frolics and sprees held in his own sect, more corrupting and disgraceful than the practices of the benighted heathen. And what untold mischief ensues when such records of immorality and shame falls into the hands of his heathen converts. Would it not be well for Bro. Ward and others in the same perplexity to set on foot some civil policy to raise money to send some heathen missionaries over here to refine the morals of Methodist socialism? The pastor that auctionered off the pretty ladies of his sect, in his idol-temple, to raise money, may have thought there was no profanation in the act, from the fact that himself, the house, and the sect generally have no just claims of sacredness left, they having been sold out at wholesale to the devil long ago. The poor missionary thinks there have been two revivals in the M. E. sect. One is holiness, which is of God, and the other bad spreeing of the devil. But we have no doubt if the poor man were to get a Bible Standard of holiness, it would open his eyes to see that God and the devil are not in partnership, using the same institution to promote their respective revivals. We speak in the fear of God the truth when we aver that a holiness that will find shelter in the M. E. sect is not of God. The fact of the matter is, both the revivals alluded to in the M. E. sect are of the devil. Satan knows very well that he can destroy some souls through the super-heathen sprees of fallen babylon; he also knows that he can hold more souls in fellowship with the abominable works by having a shoddy holiness revival in progress. So some of the better disposed, who do not wish to have fellowship with the ungodly works of the sect, still remain in her because of the display of galvanized holiness. Doubtless some get a better experience by means of the show of something like holiness in these sects, and God does the best he can to save them. But this the devil cannot avoid, but still keeps up an appearance of holiness to deceive and hold sincere ones in her cage of unclean birds, and slay them. “Doubly has holiness become the only hope of Methodism.” — How can holiness be the hope of any ism, when a Methodist Editor admits that “Thorough holiness destroys sects (isms) and denominations.” There is no hope for any ism. Sin curses and blasts them, and thorough holiness destroys them, so nothing but fear and the pit awaits them whichever course they take.

“A generation of Methodists are upon us,” etc. “O generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell.

The poor missionary thinks that if the sects had not become so extremely rotten, there would have been no occasion for what he calls “come-outism.” Well, come-outism is no better than all isms. All isms alike are of the devil. But there is no possible chance for the missionary’s “if;” her rottenness, fall, habitation of devils, is all foretold in the Bible, and had to come. So is also the fact that Christ would, and now does call His people out of her. Not to a come-outism, but to perfection in Himself who is not divided, and in whom there is no ism, schism, sect or division.

“O that he (Bishop Foster) would once more set things in a blaze under the fire of holiness.

But “in vain is salvation hoped for from the moutains (big sects) and from the hills,” (little sects). Bishop Foster is a poor source to look to for a holiness fire, who is more prone to suck the smoke from the lire of a fine cigar. O ye poor wretched Methodist ye are in a sinking boat, and down it must go. God help you to leave the poor old stranded wreck and pull for the shore.

“Woe to her that is polluted, to the oppressing city! She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the Lord; she drew not near to her God. Her princes are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones until the morrow. Her prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law.

I have cut off the nations: their towers are desolate; I made their streets waste, that none passeth by: their cities are destroyed, so that there is no man, that there is none inhabitant.” — Zeph. 3:1-4, 6.

“For both prophet and priest are profane; yea, in my house have I found their wickedness, saith the Lord.

I have seen also in the prophets an horrible thing; they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.” — Jer. 23:11, 14.

Dear Saints: — I feel led of the Lord to give my testimony through the TRUMPET. Oh how I praise God for calling me out of babylon and completely delivering me from the sect beast. Praise God for salvation! Just now I am saved and sanctified and kept by the power of God, ready to be revealed in the last time.

“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” — Mark 16:17, 18.

Praise God! these signs are verified among the saints of the living God. Last Sabbath, Jan 6th, in our meeting God manifested His mighty power in the healing of Sister Lusk. She desired to obey the Word and receive the holy anointing and laying on of hands, which we did in the name of Jesus; she was healed, and testified to the same. Praise the Lord! These signs do not follow sect members, for they have a form of Godliness, but deny the power, and their creeds are not of God, and His Word declares them fallen.

“And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying: Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of of devils and the hold of every foul spirit, and cage of every unclean and hateful bird.” — Rev. 18:2.

The blessed Word teaches us to abstain from all appearance of evil. “Be ye holy for I am holy.” “Either make the tree good and the fruit good, or else the tree corrupt and the fruit corrupt; for the tree is known by his fruit.” — Matt. 12:33. “Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”

Praise God! I have obtained my freedom through the blood of Jesus, and am able by the power of God to live a righteous life and keep all the commands of God. Your Bro. under the blood.

Dear Saints of God: — I feel led to testify through the TRUMPET. About four years ago I started with a determination to find salvation. I came to the Lord and confessed my sins, and He forgave me; I realized the work of justification, but was soon led away into babylon, the land of desolation. There I soon began to get lean in my soul, fell into sin and condemnation. I prayed to God and He forgave me again. Praise God! I have heard the angel proclaiming the word, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and cage of every unclean and hate ful bird. I also heard another angel say: Come out of her my people. Bless the dear Lord! I came out of her and presented my body a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which was my reasonable service, and He sanctified me wholly. He cleansed me from all inbred sin which is a plant of the devil. Bless the Lord! I am standing on the sea of glass mingled with fire. Pray for me.

Dear Trumpet Readers: — I am led by the Spirit to give my testimony for Christ and His power to save even me from self, sin, the world and the flesh; almost alone, no meetings except at a distance, and they are cold and formal; the minister stands up to pray.

O praise the Lord for He is good and true. He took me when wrapped in self- conceit, self-righteousness and morality, and a slave to tobacco, and has cleansed me from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit. Praise the Lord! He is mighty to save. We can do nothing of ourselves; neither can our dearest earthly friends save us; but I find that the devil uses those who are the dearest to us to tempt us. I am cast down, but not in despair, for God is with me, and He cannot fail. I am here almost alone for God among those who are either cold or luke warm, but principally non-professors. May the Lord establish and use me to His glory here. Pray for me as I am deprived of the blessed privilege of meeting with any the true fire baptized saints.

From one of the least of the Lord’s despised ones, saved and under the blood that cleanses from all sin.

Greeting to all the Saints: — We want to say to the glory of God, that the precious blood of Jesus has cleansed us from all sin, and the God of all grace sanctifies us wholly just now. Praise God! We have been praying a long time for the Lord to send dear Bro. J. P. Haner to preach the Gospel to us, and He has answered our prayer. Bro. Haner was here one week, and the Lord has added three souls to His Church at this place. Glory to His name! We humbly ask all the dear saints to pray for us, that we may work together, so the Lord will add to our number here. We are your free brother and sister built in the true Church of Jesus Christ. Amen!

Dear Saints: — Praise the Lord, we are saved, sanctified and kept by the power of God. Glory to Jesus for ever and ever! Through the grace of God we are still standing on the Rock, Christ Jesus, sweetly kept by the power of God. Glory to His name! We are not without trials or persecutions; but while the enemy rages, we realize God is with us in his saving and keeping power. We have meeting twice a week, but feel that we need more of the straight Word taught here. I praise God for sending Bro. Michels when He did. Satan has become wonderfully stirred, for which we feel to praise God, as it only drives us nearer to God, and makes us search the Word more. We know in whom we trust, and we ask the prayers of all the dear saints that we may ever be kept humble at the feet ef Jesus. O I do praise God for this wonderful salvation, and this glorious evening light that now shines on us. And while God was pleased to lead us out, after traveling in sect bondage for over twenty long years, I now want lo do all the Lord has for us to do to bring others out in this light; and as the Lord leads we will follow. Glory to his name! And as the Lord had me to prepare a house for worship, I also feel that be sent brother Michels to hold meeting. We pray God to send some more of his chosen ones here to declare his Word to the people; and I still ask the Lord to send dear Bro. Warner and his company, if it is his will. The Lord’s will be done and not mine, is my prayer, but I feel assured that the Lord will send some one. Bless his name for ever and ever! I praise God for a salvation that saves from all sin; and I do praise my blessed Jesus for his healing, sanctifying and keeping power. Glory be to his name for ever! Your Bro. and sister.

Dear Brethren: — I feel it to be the will of God that I write my testimony. Praise the Lord! I am saved and sanctified. I am determined to run and faint not. I am willing to do the will of God, whatever it may be; I am all given up to the Lord, willing to work for Him at any time. I want the saints to pray for me that I may keep low at the feet of Jesus, busy every day in the vineyard of the Lord.

Your sister in Christ, saved, sanctified, and dwelling continually under the blood.

Dear Brethren: — I am saved and low down at the feet of Jesus. Praise His name! He called me out of darkness into His marvelous light. I was in the M. E. sect 14 years, but now, praise God! I am out of babylon, and babylon out of me. I am one of them that stands alar off for fear of her torment. Oh! how I do rejoice to know that I am free, for he whom Christ maketh free is free indeed. We have reason to rejoice.

Well, I am living with Jesus every moment of my life, knowing nothing but Christ and Him crucified. I am living here all alone with Christ; not one to talk with that knows anything about this true evening light. I ask all the saints to pray for my family; they are all out of babylon, but not saved.

Your sister saved and sanctified.

Dear Trumpet Readers: — I praise my blessed Jesus that He has taken me back into His fold again. Glory to His holy name! O I feel so happy in Jesus for He has saved my poor soul. O how blessed it is to be a true child of God, ready to do His will in all things. The Lord says that that none but the pure in heart can dwell with Him in glory. I have been very sick, but I called for the elders of the Church, and they anointed me with oil in the name of the Lord and laid on hands and I was healed. O praise the Lord for His goodness to me. My soul is filled with the glory of God when I read the testimonies of the dear saints of God. I was a terrible sinner when the Lord found me, but He has saved me and taken me out of the sect, and best of all He has taken the sect spirit out of me. Praise the Lord!

When first I saw Thee crucified,
He spake: thy sins forgiven;
Then in His blood He sanctified,
And made me pure as heaven.

Your sister saved in Christ.

Dear Saints: — I feel like writing my testimony to the Trumpet. I do praise God for a Savior that keeps me continually in the straight and narrow path that leads to glory. I have the fountain springing up in my soul; glory be to God! Though the tempest rages, still our faith is strong in the Lord; He is more to ns than all that are against us. He feeds my soul with the bread of life. The Lord has a few saints here who are walking in the light. Pray for the little Church at this place.

To the Dear Saints Scattered Abroad: May the grace of God abound in you more and more. Amen! Praise the Lord for savation full and free.

Three years ago the Lord sanctified my soul, and now instead of the carnal nature rising up in the time of provocation, it is the Lion of the tribe of Judah arising with mighty power to deliver. Praise the Lord forever and ever!

Last spring I had a paraletic stroke, leaving my left side almost helpless, so I was not able to do my work. This fall at the Rockland Camp Meeting I was healed by prayer and the laying on of hands by the elders in the name of the Lord. Since then I have been able to do my own work and the Lord is abundantly blessing my soul. Your Bro. saved and sanctified.

The devil is trying hard to overcome me, but praise the Lord, I am settled in the love of God so that the devil can not touch me. I do praise God for giving me power to overcome the evil one, Pray for me that I may ever be found low at the feet of Jesus. Your sister sanctified wholly.
