Something more than Gold.

_____

There was a man in Israel’s land,
His name was Zaccheus bold;
He neither cared for God nor man,
||:But he worshiped bags of gold.: ||

Chorus.
O yes . . . . . O yes . . . . .
Bass. ” O yes, “ O yes,
There’s something more than gold,
O yes! . . . . . O yes . . . . .
Bass. ” O yes, ” O yes,
||:There’s something more than gold.: ||

The Christians living in that land,
To this little man they told,
That Jesus Christ had come that way
||:With something more than gold.: ||

This little man he quickly ran
To see what he was told;
He climbed into a sycamore tree,
And there he did behold,
There’s something more than gold.

Said Jesus to this little man,
Come down in haste, behold,
Today I must abide with thee
||:With something more than gold.: ||

This little man climbed quickly down,
To answer Jesus bold:
The half of all I give to the poor:
||:For something more than gold.:||

He further said, I will restore,
To all I’ve wronged fourfold;
For truly Lord, I do believe
||:You’ve something more than gold.: ||

The wicked Jews, who stood around
Began at once to scold,
Because the Lord was guest to him,
||:With something more than gold.: ||

Let worldlings have their goods and store,
And men their wealth untold:
Since Jesus Christ within my heart,
||:Is something more than gold.: ||

__________

GOD’S HOUSE.

_____

I wish to present a few thoughts on the subject of God’s house. I will base the same upon the words of Jesus, found in St. John 14:2. — “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were hot so,I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.” My first, will be to present God’s house or his word for it; in the 2d, the mansions; and in the 3d, treat upon the prepared place.

I will say first, God’s house is a spiritual house. To the law and to the testimony. If any speak not according to his word, it is because there is no light in them. Paul said to Timothy, “That thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” — 1 Tim. 3:15. For we are laborers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building. — 1 Cor. 3:9. Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood. ..o offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. — 1 Pet. 2:5. Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; in whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto a holy temple in the Lord; in whom ye also are budded together for a habitation of God through the Spirit. — Eph. 2:19-22. The household of God is the family of God, as he has but one family. Of whom the whole family in heaven and in earth is named. — Eph. 3:15. For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? – 1 Pet. 4:17. Here we see what the house of God is, the true children of God, all such is the material of which this great house is built. For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God! And Moses verily was faithful in all this house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after; but Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. — Heb. 3:4-6. Now the prophet Ezekiel uses the term house scores of times to Israel, and as the house is built of all God’s true children, the mansions are all of the same material. Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. — 1 Cor. 3:16, 17. What! know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? — 1 Cor. 6:19. For ye are the temple of the living God; as God lath said, I will dwell in them and walk in them, I will be their God, and they shall be my people. — 2 Cor. 6:16. Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. — Jno. 14:23. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit. — Jno. 15:6.

The scriptures above show most clearly the house, and as it takes all the church to make this house, each member is a mansion, as Jesus does abide in all his children individually, which are many, as the text says, Howbeit the Most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands. — Acts 7:48. David said, I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever, Psa. 23, not saying he would stay in a meeting house; no; but live in God’s family, which are all true brothers and sisters. Jesus said, Whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother and sister and mother. — Matt. 12:50. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. — 1 Cor. 12:13. I now wish to give some scriptures upon the peculiar way they are to live. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. — 1 Pet. 2:9. And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. — Luke 9:23. If we abide in the will of God, we can pray every where, lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting. In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; but which becometh women professing godliness. — 1 Tim. 2:8-10. Whose adorning, let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel, but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands. — 1 Pet. 3:3-5. Not seeking to please men but God, for if I yet please men, I should not be the servant of Christ. — Gal. 1:10. He that hath respect of persons commits sin. It is not this class that Jesus went to prepare a place for. I will say before I take up the 3d part of my text that there is not one word in my Bible, of Jesus going to prepare a mansion for any one; but it is a place. For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. — 2 Cor. 5:1. No doubt, Paul here speaks of his final home, but no where afterwards does he call it a house. For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. — Heb. 13:14. For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly; wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. — Heb. 11:10-16. But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels. — Heb. 12:22. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city and the gates therof, and the wall thereof. And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth; and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and height of it are equal. And he measured the wall thereof, a hundred forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel. — Rev. 21:2, 15-17. Glory to God for giving us the measure so we understand it! Ours is eight furlongs for one mile; that gives a city fifteen hundred miles square. And the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass. And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. And the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of the Lord did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light therof. And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. — Rev. 21:18, 19, 21-23, 25. O how I praise God for preparing such a place! and what is better still, he is coming again to receive us unto himself; that where he is there we may be also.

O reader, are you ready for his coming? If not just accept the offer he has made you. Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matt. 11:28, 29. While Jesus says Come, the Spirit and the bride say Come, and let him that heareth say Come, and let him that is athirst come, and whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. Rev. 22:17. Reader, just think how he died for you, and while you have resisted so long hear him now saying, Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any man hear my voice and open the door I will come in to him and sup with him and he with me. Rev. 3:20. Dear hungry soul, if money could buy a home in this city, how men would strive to get it! But glory be to God, it is without money or price. Christ says, If any man serve me, him will my Father honor. Yes, glory, honor, and peace to every one that doeth good, but tribulation and anguish to every one that doeth evil.

Dear Christians, friends, one and all, I have written this for the purpose of doing the will of God, and I pray that light may shine unto all the dark minds where this truth may go; as God hath said, My word shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that whereunto I send it.

Charles Wheeler.

__________

UNION OR UNITY?

_____

IN these days when the cry of nearly every one is for “Union” of some form or other, especially in church and state, it is well for us to inquire into the matter and find out exactly what it means and what it does not mean, that we may know what is required of us so that we may do our duty in a manner becoming saints.

NOW WHAT IS UNION?

Webster says it is the act of joining two or more things into one, thus forming a compound body.

Now, being a compound boby, the conditions being removed that hold it together, it will naturally return to its original elements; that is, it holds within itself the elements of its own dissolution. (We are examining this in the light of nature and revelation.)

Now our bodies are made of different elements compounded into one, and a very casual examination will show us that the constant tendency is to return to its original elements to the destruction of the body. So also if we look at the body politic, we find the elements of death working and we will not have to go back many years to find a great eating ulcer that had to be burned out by the caustic of war, and any reader of the newspapers of the day will surely be blind that cannot see the elements of death working vigorously to undermine the powerful constitution of the state, and sooner or later it will give way and the whole structure will die.

Again, we look at the church as at present organized into different semi- hostile bodies. We not only find it made up of the different elements of a compound body, but we find in each body elements hostile to each other; one the element of death; the other of life. Now as “a house divided against itself cannot stand,” it will fall sooner or later into decay. See Matt. 12:24.

But, says some one, what are the elements of which you say the church (sect) is composed?

A very casual observer will very easily see that while a few have salvation — (life) John 5:24, 25 — a great many lack the vital element, are even outbreaking sinners. Paul says “Dead in trespasses and sins,” — Eph. 2:1 — two qualifies diametrically opposite — Rom. 3:13, 18, and 8:1, 2. — yet are members in good standing in the church (sect) to which they belong and no chance to get rid of them so long as they pay their dues.

But, says another, how do you propose to better it, and where will you find the pure church?

God’s church is such a one — Isaiah 35:8, 10. — and this brings us to the second part of our proposition “Unity.”

WHAT IS UNITY?

“Unity is undivided of itself yet separate from all other bodies — Webster. God is one, and all those that come to him must be one with him.

How can you make one out of so many?

God is love and whosoever abideth in love abideth in God and God in him, and as Christ is one with the Father and cannot be divided, and as he is all things to the church which is his body — Eph. 1:22, 23. — there is only one, for the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, and the Bride of Christ, and as God is separate from all things evil, so the church to be one, must be separated “unto every good work!”

Our Lord prays, in John 17, that they (the disciples who are the church) may be one as he and the Father are one, that they, the Father, Christ and the church may all be one — John 17:21.

Note also the reason, “That the world may believe that thou hast sent me.”

Would the UNION of all the so-called churches prove that?

May God open the people’s eyes to see the truth that nothing but unity with God and his Christ can save, and to leave all men-made unions to go where they belong.

Your saved brother in the one body with the one and only God and his anointed. Amen.

ECCLESIASTICAL MACHINERY.

_____

IN the U. B. TELESCOPE, not long ago was an article in which the writer, arrived at the conclusion that they were overloaded with sect machinery. That it cost too much to keep it all running. He thought they could get along without their bishops, and made a calculation of how many thousand dollars they would save by knocking off that part of their sect gearing. It occurred to our mind that if so many thousand dollars of the Lord’s money were saved by casting off one big wheel, what a blessing to the cause of God, if the whole machine were broken to pieces and cast out of the way. In the name of Jesus Christ we confidently assert, and have sounded this blast of truth for the last twelve years that God’s work of salvation does not need one single wheel, strap, shaft, lever, weight, crank, committee, preamble, resolution, license, or official action, of the entire running gears of sect organisms. That the whole thing is an endless round of systemized confusion, oppression, and death. That all, any man or woman, or any multiplied thousands of men need to live together in perfect peace and harmony, labor together effectually for the salvation of souls, and the permanent upbuilding of God’s church and cause on earth, is for each one to get wholly saved and sanctified to God, filled with the word and Spirit of God, and let “God work all things in all.” And whatsoever is more than this cometh of evil. Every sect invention is in the way of the work of God. The following is from a book entitled “Our Bishops,” [M. E.] by H. A. Thompson, D. D. L. L. D. Page 387.

“In this work of organization no one took a more important part than Bishop Edwards,” page 383. “The following were among his last utterances:” “If it might be the Lord’s will, I would like to live to preach awhile yet. I would preach as never before, salvation by faith alone. Oh, the church [his sect] has so much machinery, and there is such a disposition to interpose so many things between inquiring souls and Christ. On, I would tell them salvation is by faith in Christ alone. I see this now as never before, and would like to live and preach it.”

What an awful thing it is to spend a lifetime building up a structure that must fall to ruin in the end, and then wake up at the close of life to see the sad failure. O that men and women would get on the solid rock and build thereon, that which will abide forever and bring a reward. And moreover every ecclesiastical system on earth invented by men was called into existence because its formulators, did not discern the body of Christ, and were ignorant of the divine nature, and God — management of his own church. O how the devil has laughed to see the ecclesiastical wisdom of this world, down through the past centuries, busily engaged in constructing endless machinations which he could run to grind to death the souls of men, and supplant the work of real salvation! Some of the more pious and thoughtful have waked up to the fact that the devil only operated their dead work factories.

DIVINE HEALING
—OF—
SOUL AND BODY.

A New Book,
—by—
E. E. BYRUM.

_____

This book is just fresh from the author’s pen, and a glance at the contents is enough to convince any one of its interest and value to those seeking a more thorough khowledge of the Divine Being, and his dealings with people at the present time, as well as in days past.

The first part of the book very plainly marks out the way from sin unto full salvation, according to the teaching of the sacred word.

It presents the gospel truth in such a way as to throw a gleam of light into the pathway of the sinner, and enable him to see that there is hope beyond, through the mercies of a blessed Redeemer.

The BELIEVER is led to see the beauties of full salvation, and the joys in a life of Christian perfection.

THE HEALING OF THE BODY

constitutes the second part of the book. This consists of twenty-six chapters on doctrinal subjects, exposing and overthrowing false ideas and theories concerning the healing power in these last days, showing when, how, and under what circumstances and conditions God heals the sick and afflicted at the present time.

It gives a history and testimonies of healing from the time of Abraham, through the different ages, up to the present time.

The third part of the book consists of the

WITNESSES OF TO DAY.

These are wonderful testimonies of persons who have been healed within the last few years by divine power; such as being instantly restored to sight after having been blind for years; the lame throw away their crutches; broken bones are instantly healed; invalids who have suffered for years immediately arise and walk, after the prayer of faith is offered, etc. The author is personally acquainted, with nearly all the parties who have herein given their testimonies, and gives their names and addresses in the book, so that persons doubting the truthfulness of the same can write to the parties themselves.

It will be a precious volume to those who are afflicted in either soul or body. The chapters on faith, and also other subjects, will strengthen the faith of the reader, and aid in a closer walk with Him who is the “giver of every good and perfect gift.”

It contains 248 good-sized pages; good, plain print, on heavy paper. Neatly bound in cloth, $ .75. Library (half morocco), marble edge, $1.10. Send two cent stamp for special terms to agents. Address,

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

__________

Three Rivers, Mich., Sept. 7, 1892. Dear Saints of God: We are having good meetings here. God is adding to the church those being saved. There were six dear souls buried with Christ in baptism last Sabbath, the fourth of Sept. We are saved and sanctified, kept by power divine Praise God forever!

Dear Trumpet Readers: I am sanctified now; Praise the Lord. I got to the Norwood C. M. just at its close; found the power of God very great, I met Bro. Warner, Bro. Bolds and others, and was much refreshed. We started next morning for Vichy C. M. with Bro Bolds and Co. We engaged a wagon ride of about three days over the rough roads. On reaching the place found Bro. Thornton suffering intensely; so we laid on hands and the Holy Ghost witnessed the healing of his body. Praise God forever! The word was given straight in the name of Jesus. The power of God was wonderful in saving. The crooked was made straight, the crippled made whole, the wounded healed and sinners saved. To God be all the glory. Amen. May God keep all the dear ones at that place for Jesus’ sake.

Dubuque, Ia., Sept. 7, 1892.

Dear Saints of God, Greeting: While here waiting for the train thought to improve the time in writing the news of the work in Iowa. We started from Ill. Aug. 18, for the grove meeting at Dysart, and commenced meeting the 19th and continued to the 28th. The meeting would have resulted much better had we not been hinderd by the Soldiers’ Union, which hindered us from using the park two days, right in the middle of the meeting. But nevertheless good precious seed was sown. On the last night of our meeting was the best interest manifested. We feel that the little church ought to be more active in the future. Many were disappointed in some one not coming to help in the work. It seems that one extreme follows another, that is, in some meetings there are as high as six to eight

preachers, and at other times only one, to carry on meetings. Lord, teach us wisdom.

From this place we went to Manchester, and commenced meeting Sept. 1st, and continued to the 7th. We feel that this meeting was a glorious feast to our souls. Some errors and misunderstandings were swept away and the real unity again established. The Lord blessed our soul in presenting the truth, and many acknowledged it, but were not willing to pay the price. One dear soul consecrated her all to God. Some conviction rested upon the people, but we felt led of God to close, as the people were very busy with the work which is about two weeks later than usual. We are on our way to Fair Haven, Ill., where we will remain for some time, and will soon be ready for the field again.

Your brother down under the blood,

H. W. Hechler.

We are depending on the Lord and our hands to support us in this great work. The hall is located at 6410 South Halstead St., Englewood, Ill. Our present address is 6810. Sangamon St. We hope that all that are in reach will help both with means and presence to get the pure gospel in this wicked city where thousands of souls are rushing down to woe. WEST LIBERTY CAMP MEETING.

We are happy to report to all the saints that the Clark Co., O. grove meeting was one of real power and victory from beginning to end. Souls were made free indeed through the blood of Jesus, and the church much refreshed. Some who had backslid were reclaimed. Saturday, Aug. 28, we commemorated the death of the Son of God in breaking bread and drinking wine, also washed the saints’ feet.

We had the Logan Co. tabernacle which is 40×46. God of a truth is letting the people see the vast difference between his people and sect Babylon. Bro. Wm. Schell, B. E. Warren and Bro. Tubbs from Henry Co., O. assisted in the meeting with God’s eternal truth, which had deep effect. Two dear souls whom the dear Lord convicted in the meeting, followed us to this camp meeting, and were made free indeed in their souls. Indeed it is food to the soul to see poor souls made free. All who wish that we should come unto them with the word of God may address me at Burket, Ind. I am cut loose for God and full of his eternal love.

I remain your brother, all the Lord’s, fully sanctified,

S. L. Speck.

Summitville, Ind., Sept. 5, 1892.

Dear Saints: We came to this place with Bro. Gast and Co. to attend the grove meeting, and found prejudice very great and things not in a condition to work. God gave me the witness in the beginning that there would be a good work done. Toward the close from outward appearance it seemed it would be a failure, but things straightened up and then the work began to move out. Bro. Gast and Co. left on Wednesday for Ohio, but we continued the meeting till Sunday night with increasing interest, and several precious souls saved, some as bright experiences in both graces as I ever witnessed. Some dear ones escaped from the meshes of Babylon and rejoiced in their freedom. One dear brother and sister and daughter, most excellent singers, from the Wesleyan sect who are doubtless called to the work of gleaning in harvest field. May God speed them on. Sunday eve after meeting we had a most precious ordinance meeting. Some dear ones from Fairmount whom God has led out of the dark confusions, was present and partook joyfully with us. Prejudice was largely overcome and there is a precious church of the living God at this place, and a good meeting house, formerly M. E., to hold meeting in. Any one coming this way can find a good place to work. We begin to night in a new place about six miles east of Summitville. Also we are expecting to go to Anderson, Ind., the Lord willing, where several are out but have not much knowledge of the pure evening light.

Yours in Christ,

G. R. Achor & daughters.

Ridgeville Corners, O., Sept. 5, 1892.

After the Jerry City camp meeting closed we came to this place and commenced meeting Aug. 27, in the name of the Lord, and he sent forth judgment unto victory. Glory to his name forever and ever! “O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm hath gotten him the victory.” Meeting closed Sabbath evening, Sept. 4, with glorious success through the entire meeting. There were several consecrated themselves and all unto the Lord. The power of God was manifested in converting, sanctifying and healing; for which we give him all the glory. On the last day of the meeting eleven followed Christ down into the water, fulfilling the command of baptism. May God bless the dear ones and keep them in his love is my prayer. Amen.

We were happy to meet Bro. Willie Cole who is a minister of the gospel in the evening light. He gave us some assistance in preaching the word. May God bless him and lead him out into the field of the Lord, for the harvest is great and the laborers are few. Bro. Carter leaves here for West Liberty, O. camp meeting, and I for my home at New Pittsburg, Ind. After I get my seeding done I will be ready for any calls for the gospel that the Lord will open up.

Your brother saved and sanctified,

This glorious meeting is now in the past, but the precious work done in this ten days of devotion, eternity will tell. Souls were being saved at almost any hour in the day. Quite a number were saved between services, so we cannot get just the number; some over forty, perhaps fifty. Some were healed. The work in almost every case was clear and complete. There was a great work done among the children, in which work the Lord used dear Sister Myers, who is a willing worker for God. About thirteen children were clearly saved. Truly the testimony meetings of the children were wonderful. This is no doubt the fruits of keeping up children’s meeting every week for the past year. We want to recommend this every where. Quite a number of the dear workers were present for which we do praise God. The Lord blessed the work of dear Bro’s Caudell, and Ostis Wilson. Seventeen dear souls were buried with Christ in baptism. On Saturday evening fifty- nine saints participated in a glorious observance of washing the saints’ feet. Praise the Lord for the sacred privilege! We leave the church at this place in good condition. May God keep the fire burning; the fire is already beginning to scatter in many directions. We will have a few night’s, meeting in the hall in St. James, then in Cuba, Mo. Then we go to Ill. to carry glad tidings to some points there.

Ten Mile Bottom, Pa., Sept. 8, ’92.

Dear Brethren: May eternal joy and victory be ever yours. Amen. The East Hickory grove meeting was held in the viliage M. E. grove which the trustees kindly gave us to hold the meeting in, which commenced Aug. 15th, and closed the 24th. A good and glorious work would have been accomplished in the meeting but for a certain pernicious spirit and element exisiting and resident there under the garb and profession of holiness and saintliness, which was a drawback to the meeting; but thank God, some precious gospel seed was sown in some hearers, which we believe will yet bring forth fruit in salvation with the blessing of God. One sister made her escape out of the M. E. sect and was saved out in the evening light. Hallelujah! The Lord abundantly bless and reward the friends who treated us with such kindness and hospitality. We pray God to keep the children of God in those parts clear and free from all heresy, deceptive and party spirits and elements. Ever stay on God in truth, walking in all the light of God, and pure in his sight.

From there we went to the Red Lion C. M. and we were so thankful indeed to meet with and form the acquaintance of many saints and friends with whom we had not yet met and also to meet with and enjoy the pure fellowship and communion with our beloved brethren in the ministry. How sweet the fellowship and unison between the church and her beloved head, Jesus, and among her members and new born children! The C. M. was the best yet held Pa. and truly a rich and glorious feast to us all. Many precious and valuable lessons and rich instructions were received and enjoyed by us all. Thank the Lord! Great and lasting good was done which will truly tell in eternity. Our calls and engagements in Pa. will yet keep us busy in the gospel till the last of Dec. or possibly longer. His will be done. We are now holding a grove meeting here which will last till the 11th or longer, the Lord willing, and the Lord is working here in power. This is a new place where the precious and perfect gospel of Christ has never been preached. We earnestly desire the fervent prayers of the holy remnant in our behalf, and for constant success in the gospel of Christ for the salvation of many souls, that we may be kept perfectly humble and anointed for the work of God at all times. Please address us at St. Petersburg, Pa., in care of Bro. Jno. Morgan. Love to all.

Yours in him, sanctified wholly and kept,

E. Cox & F. N. & S. A. Jacobson.

Dear Saints: I feel led this evening to write and let you all know that I am still standing fast in the liberty wherewith Christ has made me free from the world and all its pleasures, even tobacco in every form, and Babylon, for which I give God all the glory. He has brought me through bereavements and the severest of trials in the past nineteen months, but I find his grace sufficient for me. Praise his holy name! He only designs the dross to consume and the gold to refine. Finally all ye saints, pray for me that I may be fervent in Spirit, and ever ready to follow when the Spirit leads.

Dearly Beloved Saints of God: The Lord bless you all for Jesus’ sake. Amen. Dear ones, I feel led to write my testimony in the GOSPEL TRUMPET to all the saints and to all the world, of the mighty healing power of God. Bless the Lord, O my soul! For about forty long years I have been afflicted with a rupture, and for many days unable to do much or any work at all. But glory to our God for his kindness to us in sending his dear Son into the world that we might be healed soul and body. Praise the Lord, I, am healed of the rupture. It has not appeared for almost a year, and I do know that the good Lord has done the work. I can now do a full hard day’s work, and am no more troubled with that bad cough and sore lungs. Oh, bless the Lord, he has been so good to me. I am all on the altar and am sinking deeper and deeper down and proving all his holy will. Dear ones, pray for me that I may more fully know what the dear Lord wants me to do. I am sure he is calling me to some kind of work in his vineyard. I am willing to do anything.

Dearly Beloved Saints: We pray the dear Father to give you victory in your souls continually. We do rejoice in the love and fellowship with all God’s children. The dear Lord is working in the hearts of some, and souls are coming to the cross and being saved, even at or near Albany. Oh, how iniquity doth abound! Pray much that the people may hear the truth and be saved in this wicked city. We are so happy to know that it is God’s hand that leadeth us; the people seem glad to hear the truth, and we hope ere long the church of the living God will be established here in this sin-cursed, and blighted with infidelity, city of confusion. We are living in perilous times; they will deceive the very elect if possible. So many teaching false doctrine; we hate their pernicious ways. Pray much for us at Albany. We send greeting to all the dear saints of God. Oh praise God for this wonderful salvation so full and free! Hallelujah to the Lamb! We are sitting low down at the feet of Jesus and being taught of him, waiting his orders, saved and sanctified by a second work of grace, and kept by the mighty power of God.

My Testimony.

Lambert, N. J.

Dearly Beloved: I gave my heart to God the 22d of January, 1890. I am enjoying a full and a free salvation: a full salvation because Jesus said, just before giving up the ghost, It is finished. Free, because the word says, Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money, come ye, buy and eat; yea, come buy wine and milk without money and without price. And Jesus said, He that cometh unto me I will in no wise cast out. Yes, and glory to his name, he came to earth to fully save and fully free us from all sin. I am saved by a Savior that is mighty to save and strong to deliver. He gives me that peace that the world cannot give, neither can it take it away. In Christ I find a satisfying portion, yes, thank God, I do not have to turn to the world for pleasure, do not need to turn to the tobacco store for pleasure, but it is pleasure to my soul and body to walk with Jesus and be fed with that bread that shall never perish. Oh glory and praise to him who keeps me high and happy above the sin of the world! Sometimes I am told that I am too bold in my experience. Now the book that God gave us for our law book says, “If we walk in the light as he is in the light we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” Well if it cleanses us from all sin that is in us, why, glory to Jesus, we are made free from all sin and become new creatures in Christ Jesus. Dear readers, let us be holy for the Lord our God is holy. Let us have the mind that was in Christ Jesus our Lord, and he will bring us off more than conquerors.

Your brother in Christ, saved to the uttermost,

Edgar H. Yuncker.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT,

WARM FEET.

_____

“THE proper regimen for these convenient articles of service is very important. And the more so, because whatever injury they sustain is speedily diffused throughout the system. Cold or wet feet are much more prolific of colds and their consequences than almost any other cause; while keeping them warm and healthy generally protects the system from disease. That old saw — Keep the head cool and feet warm, is full of practical wisdom. In fact, cold feet induce headache by a partial congestion of the brain, nor is there a greater cure for headache than rubbing, washing, soaking, or toasting the feet, because they draw off that extra rush of blood to the head which caused it to ache.

“To secure due warmth in the feet, WASH AND RUB THEM OFTEN. Few things are more promotive of health than the daily ablution of the feet. It will nearly double the health of every reader who will practice it, as well as unspeakably enhance his serenity of mind. Jefferson attributed his uniform health, even in advanced life, more to this one practice than to any other. Nor does running in the water in summer do children the damage apprehended. Let every child be brought up to wash the feet, every night on retiring, in cold water. Than the prevailing idea that cold water applied to the feet is injurious, nothing is more erroneous or foolish. Is it poisonous? Nor are wet feet, if WARM, the precursors of the winding sheet, though cold wet feet often breed disease. Keep up the circulation in them, and they may be wet half the time without injury! The great evil is not in wet, but COLD feet, of which the judicious application of cold water is the greatest known preventive.

“The proper dressing of the feet so as to secure the required warmth, then, becomes a matter of great importance. Nor should reliance for keeping them warm be placed on shoes, stockings, and fires. The principles of fires and dress already applied to the body apply equally to the feet. Almost exclusive reliance should be placed on vigorous CIRCULATION, as secured by exercise and washing, not on stockings, boots, and over-shoes. In fact, the latter generally IMPAIR circulation, and thus induce coldness of the feet instead of warmth. In general, the lighter dressed the warmer, provided they have sufficient EXERCISE.

“GOING BAREFOOT in summer is not, then, so very injurious to children. All love it dearly, and this is nature’s warrant for its utility. The soles of their feet are furnished from birth with a thick epidermis, which going barefoot renders very thick and tough, and abundantly protects them from injury, of which all poor and barefoot subjects are examples. Nor will it give them cold, but it will prevent sickness by promoting health and circulation in the feet.”

— Fowler.

__________

A TRIUMPHANT CHURCH.

_____

“Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savor of his knowledge by us in every place.” — 2 Cor. 2:14.

THE low standard of sect preaching and living, has led theologians to try to divide God’s church into two parts, which they are pleased to call “Church Militant” and “Church Triumphant.” Now comes the difficulty as to how to locate them. “Church Triumphant;” where could they find it? They ramble throughout the multiplicity of sects with diligent search, but ah, then report it is not there. What is the final conclusion? It must be in heaven. What forced them to this conclusion? They did not know where to look. They searched the wrong record. Had they searched the scriptures they would have found a “triumphant church” this side of heaven. “Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph.”

Not prior to the tempest’s rage alone,
Nor after the storms of life are gone;
But in the thickest of the fight, the same,
‘Tis triumph! triumph! in my Savior’s name.

“Church Militant;” what is that? asks an inquirer. Oh! replies the theologian, that is the church of God in this world.

Inq. Where can I find it then? You have gotten info close quarters by limiting it to this world. If you could have only put it in the next world, you would have had it out of sight; then you would have had the wool over our eyes; so you would not lave been called upon to present it to our view. I know there are many sects in the world to day, but which one is the Church Militant?

Theo. I think I can explain that satisfactorily. God’s “church militant” is invisible; also it is organized into many visible structures which are branch churches of the one invisible church.

Inq. There you are trying to pull the wool over my eyes again, by saying that the church of God is invisible in this world. Well if it is invisible, nobody ever saw it, and to look for such a thing would remind me of the trick the carpenter played on the green boy, when he sent him to his tool chest to look for a circle-square. Now Mr. Theologian, I am at loss to know how you discovered there is any invisible church. The Bible nowhere tells us of such an institution. That must be an old wives’ fable, hatched among the fairies. The wore “Church” is from EKLESIA in Greek, and means congregation; hence an invisible church would be an invisible congregation, or a congregation of invisible beings. It is certain that not one visible saint of God has ever visited such a congregation of worshipers in all the history of the Bible. And Christ says to his disciples, Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.

I would like to test your theology a little further. You say the invisible church has many visible branch churches. Now if God’s church were invisible, its branches would be invisible, for branches are of the same substance as that from which they branch or proceed, and all living branches on one tree are of the same substance, and bear the same kind of fruit. And if one branch is walnut, all are walnut; if one is maple, all are maple, etc. If God’s church were composed of many branches, and one branch were God’s church, every branch would be God’s church; and if one branch were a Methodist church, every branch would be a Methodist church, etc. And as God’s church has a doctrine, so every sect has a doctrine, and if these sects were God’S church they would only have one doctrine. What denominates these sects? It is their doctrines.

God’s church always has been visible ever since built by Jesus Christ. See. Matt. 16:18; 1 Pet. 2:5; 1 Tim. 3:15. Our present Protestant sects have only existed since the year 1500, A. D., and if Christ depended on these institutions to make his church visible, it could not have been visible previous to the above date, hence he never built his church until since 1500. But if his church was built, organized, and visible before 1500, A. D., then it did not depend on these institutions (modern sects) to make it visible; so if it could exist without them then, could it not exist without them now? And if these sects had no part in the church of God when built by Christ through the Holy Ghost, how could they have a part in it now? Sect means a cut off part; that explains it. When a vineyard is dressed, what part of the vineyard is the cuttings? When a body of men and women are cut off from the church, and become a sect, what part of the church are they? And when they are cut off, they lose the triumphs of the living church. Then theologians call them militant; but their militancy is beautifully described in James 4:1-3 — “From whence come wars and fightings among you [each one fighting for his sect]? Come they not hence, even of you lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not; ye kill and desire to have, and cannot obtain; ye fight and war [sect against sect, membe against member], yet ye have not because ye ask not. Ye ask and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” So it is all right to call the sects militant, and God’s church militant triumphant, but its fightings are different from that of the sects. It is at war against sin of every kind. “The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” — 2 Cor. 10:4, 5. There is a complete armor for every member of God’s church; therefore he says, “Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” — Eph. 6:11, 12. But thanks be unto God which giveth us the victory through the Lord Jesus Christ. — 1 Cor. 15:57. And this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith — 1 Jno. 5:4. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh. Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecutions, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in al these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. — Rom. 8:35-37. As he spake by the mouth of the holy prophets which have been since the world began, that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all that hate us. * * * That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. — Luke 1:70-75. No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgement thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord. — Isa. 54:17. The Lord shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face; they shall come out against thee one way and flee before thee seven ways. — Deut. 28:7. This was fulfilled literally in the old dispensation, and fulfilled spiritually in the gospel dispensation; for the prophet says, “One thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one; at the rebuke of five shall ye flee; till ye be left as a beacon upon the top of a mountain, and as an ensign on a hill. — Isa. 30:17. And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem [God’s church]: their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. — Zech. 14:12. Let the saints be joyful in glory; let them sing aloud upon their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hands; to execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishment upon the people; to bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; to execute upon them the judgement written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the Lord. — Ps. 149:5-9. And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces, and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. — Dan. 2:44. The sons of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee and all them that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet, and they shall call thee, The city of the Lord, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel. — Isa. 60:14. I saw and behold a white horse, and he that sat on him had a bow, and a crown was given unto him, and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. — Rev. 6:2. A bruised reed shall ie not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, until he send forth judgment – to victory. — Matt. 12:20. For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, * * * of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. — Isa. 9:5- 7. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions; and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall by any means hurt you. — Luke 10:18, 19. Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you. — Acts 1:8. Much more they which receive abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. — Rom. 5:17. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work. — 2 Cor. 9:8. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also. — Rom. 5:3. Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the church. — Col. 1:24. Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, Rejoice. — Phil. 4:4. Rejoice evermore. — 1 Thess. 5:16. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations. — Jas. 1:2. But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings, that when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you. — 1 Pet. 4:13, 14.

All these scriptures and exhortations, with many other similar texts, clearly prove that God’s church in this world is visible, militant and triumphant, which overthrows the stupid notions of modern theologians, respecting an invisible church in this world, and the confinement of a triumphant church to heaven only. But this is the secret of modern theology, to put practical truths and this practical salvation either in heaven or back with the apostles. God pity modern theologians and save them and others out of their errors. Amen.

Dear Brethren: Bro. Williamson has just closed a meeting with us here and I feel like writing and telling you how the Lord has blessed us in showing the true light. He baptized two and I think there are more that will follow soon. The evening light is breaking in on the people as never before. Oh pray for us that our faith may be strong in the Lord and our will buried in his. Bro. Williamson laid hands on a child sick with fever, and Jesus rebuked the fever and it left the child without use of medicine.

Yours in Christ,

Dear Saints and all the Reader of the Trumpet: God bless you all with grace and glory. Amen. I do praise the Lord that he ever led me out into the blessed evening light, Glory to his dear name! I believe it is the doctrine of the Bible, and which will lead all honest and unprejudiced hearts into that glorious oneness, which Jesus said should be to the world an evidence that God had sent him into this world, to seek and to save that which was lost. Praise God forever! Thank God, I am out of all the mists and fogs of all sect confusion, glory to God, knowing no other name but the name of Jesus, willing to follow wheresoever he goeth. My heart feels sad for the dear people of this place, as well as other places. I have been praying that God might send some real Holy Ghost man or company of workers here to get the fire burning. The Lord grant it: we are willing to fall right in line, and take the front rank. Hallelujah! Our house is open. We are having meetings every Thursday evening. Pray for us.

Dear Saints of God: I feel that it is my duty to write my testimony. I can say this morning I am saved from all sin, sanctified by a second work of grace. I do praise God that I ever saw this evening light. It is just glory in my soul. I do pray that the people may see their true condition before it is too late. We had a meeting down here lasting about two weeks, but I didn’t care but little for the preaching. Then the brethren left for a place above here where I went. I didn’t go for any good or to try to do right, but one Monday morning as we were on our way to meeting there was a young man with us who was struck down, and it just came to me that it is a warning. I said, From this day I will do better. I do thank the Lord for a salvation full and free. The world may forsake me; I will do the will of the Lord in all things. I am out at work in his vineyard. Praise the Lord all ye saints! My heart is full of the love of God. I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. Pray for me.

Dear Saints of the Living God; We are glad to report victory on the Lord’s side. Since we last testified through the Trumpet, God has wonderfully kept us soul and body. Praise the Lord! And while traveling in the gospel field we have learned some very precious lessons for which God deserves the praise. Among them was the lesson of humility, which we have found to be the source of all success in the gospel work. May God enable the watchmen that are upon Zion’s walls that are commanded to not hold their peace day nor night, to keep very low down at the feet of Jesus, that their lives may be hid with Christ in God. May humility be stamped upon the heart so forcibly that the smallest whisper of the gentle Spirit may be heard, which will guide us into all truth. Jesus our leader “humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Phil. 2. 8. So let us as obedient children walk even as he walked. My prayer is daily that I may be kept low at the feet of Jesus who has said by the mouth of Peter that “God resisteth the proud and giveth grace to the humble.” “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.” 1 Pet. 4:5, 6. Brethren, pray that we may be useful in the hands of God in tearing down the strongholds of Satan, and building up the kingdom of Christ.

Your saved brother and sister, first justified, afterwards sanctified by a second definite and distinct work of grace.
