THE BLESSED GIVER.

_____

BY JOHN N. MOORE.

Whence comes the love that fills my heart
When making self-negations?
Whence comes the joy that thrills me through
When suff’ring tribulations?
And whence the peace that soothes my soul
When pressed by persecution?
Yea, whence the calm that reigns o’er me
When all else is confusion?

From Jesus Christ these blessings come;
He is the blessed Giver,
From whom all lasting blessings flow
For every trite believer.
Whatever trials may appear.
The burdens of each hour.
I cast on Him, and trust for grace,
And conquer by His power.

__________

POWER OF THE HOLY GHOST.

_____

But ye shall receive rawer after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you. Acts 1:8.

THE Emphatic Diaglott renders: But ye shall receive power by the Holy Spirit coming upon you. Judging from the above text we observe that the Lord promised his disciples something that was for the present and future benefit, or that which qualified them more fully to go forth and teach the gospel to a lost and dying world. Jesus gave the disciples power when he commissioned them, and sent them to preach the gospel, and heal the sick, cast out devils, etc. Mark 16:17, 18. Also the seventy. Luke 10:19. This power seemed to be sufficient for the time then present, which enabled them to perform many mighty works in the name of the Lord. But in course of time he commanded them to tarry in Jerusalem until they were endued with power from on high. Luke 24:49. Which was an evidence they were not fully equipped while in a mere regenerated state. Because the power which is the Holy Ghost was not yet given, for Jesus was not yet glorified. They had it in part. Bor he dwelleth with you and shall be in you. — Jno. 14:17. But in the. 16th verse Jesus said, and I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever. Therefore no man or woman is fully qualified to go forth and teach the word of God to the people until they are in possession of the abiding Comforter, for the husbandman must first be partaker of the fruit. Therefore we must be in possession of the Holy Ghost power before we can effectually teach others the same. But did the disciples receive the power that they were commanded to tarry for? Yes, and these all continued in one accord in prayer and supplication, the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty. — Acts 1:14, 15. And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost. — Acts 2:1, 2, 4. These one hundred and twenty were children of God (not sinners). Jno. 17:16. This strange experience, yet glorious as it appeared to them, was the fulfillment of Jesus’ prayer when he said, Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth. — Jno. 17:17. For the Holy Ghost is the sanctifier. — Rom. 15:16. I had the privilege or attending a meeting a Missouri held by several women evangelists who claimed to be teaching the Holy Ghost religion and put great stress upon a certain manifestation which they called the power of the Holy Ghost. As many as a dozen would fall under its influence in one meeting, which rendered them helpless physically for some time. As sinners came to the altar, instead of preaching Bible repentance, restitution, and faith in God, for the pardon of their actual transgressions, it was now saint and sinner look up for the power. Also I observed that nothing was said against the many idols of the unconverted and even those who were justified, such as filthiness of the flesh and spirit, nor did they renounce pride, that which keeps thousands from enjoying salvation which is next to intemperance, the worst evil in our land. But sinner seek the power! and they got it, but not the Holy Ghost power. God help people to act intelligently. Since the sinner has transgressed God’s law and deserves punishment, stop and reason with God. Isa. 1:18. What next, let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. — Isa. 55:7. Then my dear unconverted friend, instead of you seeking after the power that belongs to the Christian and him alone, you seek the pardon of your sins. We will admit that people are honest in their belief, yet if the blind lead the blind they shall both fall into the ditch. So dear friend, seek to obtain an experience that corresponds with the word of God. Forasmuch as Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. For this reason God has said try the spirits whether they are of God. 1 Jno. 4:1. Ezekiel propesied of the Holy Ghost and said, I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the heathen which ye have profaned in the midst of them; And the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, saith the Lord God, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes. For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land. Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: From all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. This power is a cleansing power which exterminates the carnal mind and all the works of the flesh. Rom. 6:6. Then any power that will not cleanse or purify the soul and body is not the power of the Holy Ghost and cannot be recommended as being of God. The Holy Ghost acts as a teacher and guide to the Christian. Jno. 16:13 and 14:26. It is ability to do, or endure. — WEBSTER. Therefore the power of God is of much value, and is essential to our salvation. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. — Rom. 15:13. Your humble servant separated unto the gospel.

A. M. Bixler.

__________

HOW ARE SOULS BEGOTTEN UNTO GOD?

_____

ONE of the great delusions of the devil, in these last days of deception, is the general practice in Babylon of making converts without preaching the Word. As the divinely appointed means of saving souls, Jesus commissioned his heralds to “preach the gospel to every creature.” — Mar. 16:15. For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. — 1 Cor. 1:21. Preaching what? Not preaching chaffy stuff to excite mirth, nor graveyard stories to work on the sympathies, but “preach the word,” “preach the gospel.” For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. — Rom. 1:16. The gospel, and not man’s logic, or inventions, and fables, is the power of God unto salvation.

That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost. — Rom. 15:16. How were the Gentiles sanctified by the Holy Spirit? By ministering the gospel of God. How did the apostle make converts? Ans. “In Christ Jesus, I have begotten you through the gospel.” — 1 Cor. 4: 5. So also James testifies, “Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth.” — Jas. 1:18. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also, after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise. — Eph. 1:13.

“The word of truth,” the real “gospel of salvation,” was preached to the Ephesians, and faith came by hearing, and salvation by faith. This is God’s order. Salvation and genuine conversion is the result of preaching the pure word of God. And we confidently affirm that all conversions by recitation of fables, witticisms, adventures, and the trash that composes the bulk of Salvation Army and sectarian teaching, cannot bring forth real sons and daughters unto God. They only bring souls into a delusion of the devil, wherein they can ignore any portion of God’s word that does not suit their creed, without the slightest disturbance of conscience. “They conceive chaff, and bring forth stubble.” — Isa. 33:11. “Yea they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity. They hatch cockatrice’ eggs, and weave the spider’s web.” — Isa. 59:4, 5. Their preaching is lighter than vanity, and their revivals are only wind. But puffs in worldly papers waft it abroad, and behold the whole thing is a pompous empty fraud.

__________

GO THROUGH.

_____

GO through, go through the gates; prepare ye the way of the people; cast up, cast up the highway; gather out the stones; lift up a standard for the people. — Isa. 62:10.

There is a great deal of importance attached to those words, “go through.” It means decision for God, determination to push the battle to the gate, no matter what the surroundings are, or what the devil suggests; keeping your eye of faith right on Jesus, pressing toward the mark; seeing no man but Jesus only. Did you ever think of it, that it is only the decided ones that get through, that reach the portals of glory and spend eternity with God. It is only on the undecided points that the devil can bother any one, and you get fully decided for God on any point and the devil will not trouble you on that point. Let trials or tribulations come, what must you do; go through. Do not stop and reason with the devil. He is an experienced reasoner. He has been at that work for near six thousand years.

Some may ask, How can I go through? There is only one way, that is God’s way. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. — Jas. 4:7, 8. Go to God in earnest prayer; do as God tells you. Call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. — Psa. 50:15.

One says, I am so persecuted, I do not see how I can stand it; I believe I can never get through; what must I do? Obey God. When you are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven. — Matt. 5:10, 12. Christ himself pronounces a blessing on such. Let the blessing come by stirring up the thanksgiving in your soul. All things work together for good to them that love God. Count it as such, and you will be out of your trial before you know it. Count it all joy when ye fail into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. — Jas. 1:2-4.

No matter what you have to pass through for Christ’s sake, trials, persecutions, or trouble of any kind; it you count them all joy, and you have much to pass through, you will soon have more joy than you know what to do with. Joy inexpressible and full of glory. Oh praise His dear name! Happiness will take the place of murmuring, and finding fault and thinking your way is harder than anybody else’s. Oh shame! I am persuaded there are numbers professing holiness that would make poor masters; can’t endure but so little for Jesus, when he has endured so much for us.

“Go through, go through the gates; lift up a standard for the people.” Now would it not be a poor standard some would lift up. They are all the time complaining and thinking they have so much to endure. Sinners looking on would not see the grace of God exalted, or magnified very much, would they? Turn you to the stronghold, ye prisoners of hope. — Zech. 9:12. Thank God you are counted worthy to endure a little for Jesus, who gave himself a ransom for you. Listen now at what Paul says, Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the church. — Col. 1:24. What a privilege, just as though Christ was to have suffered a certain amount, and he did not suffer quite all, and you and I have the chance to step in and fill up the sufferings of Christ by suffering for his sake. It is a precious privilege indeed. Do we all estimate it as we should? And they that suffer with Him shall also reign with Him, — 2 Tim. 2:12; Rom. 8:17, 18. It is only they that endure to the end, the same shall be saved. — Matt. 24:13. Lot’s wife. Luke 17:32. God commanded Moses to speak to the children of Israel, that they go forward. — Ex. 14:15. May the dear Lord put more eternal go through in his children.

The crown lies just before us, not behind, nor to one side, but right before us. See that no man take thy crown. — Rev. 3:11. Strive for it lawfully; fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, be willing to endure hardness as good soldiers. Do you know what enduring means? Stop for a moment and study its meaning. Christ endured the cross, despising the shame. — Heb. 12:2.

Lift up a standard for the people, let your light shine in your daily walk, in your conversation, in all your actions, and in so doing, you are lifting up a standard for the people. Yea, more, you are both gathering out the stones and preparing the way of the people; and casting up the highway, yea, you are lifting it (Christ), as a perfect Savior, who is to save to the uttermost all them that will come unto God by him, remembering that we are Christ’s representatives to this world. How do we represent him? Do we lift him up as a perfect Savior, a very present help in time of need, one that fulfills all his promises, yea, ah all sufficiency, or do we lift him up as an imperfect Savior, one that cannot deliver and cannot sustain, and one that cannot keep? How about it? Do we exalt or dishonor our Christ? Oh magnify the grace of God by trusting him fully!

If you are determined to go through there will be no trial too hard, no persecution too severe, no cloud so dark but what you will go through with victory in your soul, and realize and know all things work together for good to them that love God. He makes us more than conquerors through Him that loved us, and where sin abounded grace did much more abound. And the dear Lord is able to do exceeding abundantly above all we are able to ask or think, taking God’s willingness and ability in consideration. When trials come and the way seems all hedged up, what must we do? In the strength of our God, go through in face of all opposition and all discouragements, “go through.” Remember there is more for us than can be against us. 2 Kings 6:15. Do what the Lord tells you, and he will be responsible for your getting through. Praise the dear Lord! He is all we take him for by faith.

Ye are Christ’s and Christ is God’s. Then why should any one be cast down, or feel forsaken when there is a boundless store of God’s goodness accessible to every soul that comes boldly to the throne of grace. Then why not trust Him?

They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth forever. For as the hills are around about Jerusalem, so is the Lord around about his people forever. Christ is a foundation that men nor devils have never shook. Then look well to it, that you are firmly established on that foundation, and all is well. For greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world. Therefore you have no excuse for not going through. Be of good cheer, then, and trust in the Lord at all times. Amen.

Mary Cole.

West Point, Pa.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I praise God this morning for a salvation full and free wrought in my soul. I am saved, sanctified, and by the power of God, ready to do his will, for his yoke is easy, and his burden is light. It is little over one year that the Lord found me a sinner, and a professor at that. But I thank God that he had mercy on me and showed me my condition. And above all I am so thankful that he made me willing to forsake all and follow him only. And ever since I have sweet peace in my souk Oh! bless the Lord for the sweet peace in my soul. I love to read the Trumpet, and especially the testimonies of the saved ones and how the Lord is blessing them. I take the Lord for my all in all. He saved my soul, and I trust him with my body. But some professors say they trust the Lord for the soul, but their bodies in the hands of the doctor. “How inconsistent.” Just ike trusting a man with a million dollars of gold, but would not trust the same man with a copper cent. Oh bless the Lord, my last bottle of medicine lies in the bottom of Lester Lake, and was buried there, when I was buried with Christ, June 1892, and by the help of God I will walk out on his promises. Your saved brother in Chsist,

W. S. Kriebel.

CAMP MEETING A SUCCESS.

I feel led of God to give some advice and exhortation to the saints in the west and south who will be in reach of the Arkansas City C. M. Dearly beloved ones, if you have not made up your mind to go to the above meeting, pray over it, and decide at once to go if God wills. Make preparation to that end, and persuade as many honest souls to come as possible, and if you cannot get them there any other way, pay their way. The more pure saints that can be collected in one-place will only increase the flames of holy fire. All come with willing hearts to work as well as hear, and hear while you work. Do not shift the responsibility on any one else. Come with the expectations of bearing one another’s burdens, spiritually and financially. Bring plenty of bedding, provisions, and every possible convenience for taking care of yourself and others that cannot afford such things. Freely give and freely receive. Come in mighty faith for perfect success. Be there if possible the first day and stay until the last. Most all the workers are poor, being constantly in the work with no opportunity to earn money to pay their way there, and crops are not very good near the city, and surely saints from a distance that are blest with good crops, etc., will send in their freewill offering as quick as possible to the glory of God. Address Wm. Gates, Arkansas City, and means will be properly appropriated to carry on the work. For Jesus’ sake please do not lay down this paper without saying “Lord, and what shall this man (I) do?” God moved this way on the hearts of the saints last fall for the Wichita C. M. and made it the most glorious of all the western camp meetings. And we pray God to do the same for Arkansas City. Many of God’s holy ministers and workers will be there, the Lord willing. A mighty victory is expected. Our God will be there in power to save, heal, and settle down in the present truth. Saints from most all over the state and Okla. are expected, and from as far as God’s Spirit will draw them. All correspondence will be directed to Bro. Wm. Gates, Arkansas City, Kan. Dear saints, come and feast on the heavenly manna.

One who loves your souls’ wellfare,

G. L. Cole.

NOTICE.

Bro. Willis will have his tabernacle there, but it is small and a large one is needed. Who has one to send or bring? Correspond with Brother Wm. Gates.

Dear Saints: I am in a meeting in Christian Co., Missouri. God is blessing his Word and think that in the near future I will see a harvest. Bless the Lord! O how cold the world is when there is no blood-washed saints to help one, but praise God we can stand by the help of God. May the Lord bless you all. Pray for me. I have lost all sect spirits out of me, I am as free as heaven. Glory, glory! Amen. I can now answer calls at anytime.

The meeting at Hopkins was a grand success. On account of not getting a suitable place at Bradley we did not have any there, but continued at Hopkins until last evening. There were twenty-eight in all at the altar during the meeting, the most of whom received a good experience. Seed was sown that will doubtless bring forth hereafter. Brother and Sister Michels were with us over the first Lord’s day. Brother and Sister Lammers were with us all through. Sister Bollinger of Kalamazoo delivered one discourse with telling effect. There were large crowds with splendid attention and order. Five were buried with Christ by baptism on the first Sunday. Yours in Christ,

Dear Saints of the Living God: May heaven’s richest blessings rest on all that love the truth. Amen. We are glad to report perfect victory over all the powers of darkness. Bless the Lord! We have been holding in Newton Co., this state. We held meeting in Spring Valley school house, Sunday morning till Tuesday night. The people were attentive, but did not come out much because of rain. We then went to Spring Dale, and held meeting from Wednesday night, till the next week closing on Thursday night. Three souls were reclaimed and others were more settled on the Word, declaring their freedom from all Good Way and anti-ordinance contusion. Glory to Jesus! The way is open for a good meeting there in the future. The people had had so much crooked stuff preached to them that they were slow to accept, because they wanted to be sure. We are ready to go wherever the Lord leads.

Yours in Jesus,

Dear Saints ok God, Greeting: Today finds us saved for which we give God all the glory. When we left the Grand Junction camp meeting we went to Adrian in company with Brother and Sister Grover and Sister Fisher. When we arrived there we had no place to set the tent. It took us two days to find a place. We staid there two weeks and the dear Lord wonderfully helped us to deliver his word and many accepted it and said it was truth. From there there we came here and began working for the Lord. The congregations were small at first, but they are increasing. The tabernacle is nearly full every night. This is a very rough place. But God is moving on the hearts of the people, and many are under conviction. There have been nine consecrations since we have been here. Four for pardon and two of them received a glorious experience; and many more manifest a desire to get right before God. We pray the Lord to save many more precious souls in the place. We do not know how much longer meetings will continue here, but just as long as the Lord wills. Yours in the love of Jesus,

W. B. Grover and A. L. Sheldon.

Dear Saints ok the Living God: To day we are praising God for victory, in our souls and in the work of the Lord. About May 1st God moved us to go over into Midland Co., in a new place and held some meetings in a school house called the Wright school house. We obeyed and found many very anxious hearers and many very generous hearts. After a short time we were joined by Bro. and Sister Walter, of St. Louis, Mich. and the latter preached the word backed up by the Holy Ghost and after a short time Bro. Cox came to our help, who rendered great assistance in delivering the word of truth, and won many warm friends to the truth. Then the Lord led us to appoint a grove meeting across the road opposite the school house for July 22d and 23. Praise our God! three at the altar and claimed sanctification in the satisfying grace. Others raised their hands tor prayer, and conviction rested on many others. A number of ministers were present. Bro’s Reeves, Cox and Drawley, and Sisters Walter, Gould and Drawley. The word was preached not with man’s wisdom but with the power of the Holy Ghost. Hallelujah to our God for perfect victory through the whole meeting! Other calls are handed in for meeting in new places where the blessed evening light had never been preached. Oh may God fit and quality more workers for the field! Your brother in the service of God,

To all the Trumpet Readers: I am praising God this morning for perfect salvation in my soul. Praise God forever and ever! Amen. Since the Grand Junction meeting, I have been working in the vineyard of the Lord in company with Bro. J. N. Worden and wife and sister Mary Metter. When our last report was written we were holding meeting at the Bell school house. We went from there to the Beech Wood school house where we had meeting one Sabbath, where the Lord met with us in real power. There were four consecrated to the Lord and three baptized. Sunday evening we had ordinance meeting in which seventeen took part. The Lord blessed our souls and we were happy in obeying him. From there we went to Gobleville, and held meeting five nights on the streets with very good attendance. We then returned to the Bell school house where we held meeting a few nights. There were three saved at that place, making five in all. Pray that the Lord keep them true and add to their number. We then went to Pawpaw, where we had the privilege of holding a meeting in the court yard, a large crowd of people gathered around and listened to the singing and preaching and we distributed tracts and papers. We expect the Lord willing, to go to Kendall to day and begin meeting there. Pray for the work at that place. My address will be box 96, Bloomingdale, Mich, until Oct. 1st. Yours saved and kept by power divine,

Dear Saints of God: With heart felt gratitude we are again able to report victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Last reported from Center Point, Ia. where I had just arrived. Spent a few days there with the precious little church, in which many were settled deeper into the eternal truth. Two were converted, fifteen baptized, and many friends won to the truth. Here we found a few souls who had never heard the teaching of the gospel, outside of sectism, but had been led of God to salvation and baptism. They had made previous arrangements to be baptized upon the same day of our appointment, by a brother who is quite clear in the discernment of the body of Christ. We went to visit these brethren and arranged for baptism at the same place and hour. The services were solemn and impressive and witnesses by more than five hundred people. These dear souls referred to, being three in number were glad to hear of a people who are out upon the word of God, free from all sect bondage. How wonderfully God is calling out a people all over the land. Oh the urgent calls for the gospel everywhere. Many precious souls are led out of sectism but need the way of God taught them more perfectly. There is an open door and a grand field at Center Point. May God send the proper laborers, who could spend an unlimited length of time there. From there I went to Dysart, Ia. where I spent two days with the saints. Arrived Aug. 3, at Clinton, Ia., where I met my dear family well and happy. Held a prayer meeting there with the church and next day went to Albany, Ill. God met with us in power Aug. 6, at Cedar Creek, Ill. in an assembly meeting. Came to this place last Monday where we are holding meetings this week. God willing we will be at the Vichy, Mo., and Arkansas City, Kan. camp meetings on our way to Cal. Your humble brother and sister separated unto the gospel,

Dear Saints of the Living God: May the dear Lord bless you all in soul and body, and keep you all steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord. I praise God today, for full salvation in Jesus. The Lord has been blessing me today in such a way, that my heart is very soft, and my eyes moisten quite often with tears of love and joy. Oh praise the Lord! My life flows on in endless song, above earth’s lamentation, I have the new creation. I will now report how God is blessing his people in this wicked, and financially panic stricken city. While the great firms and banks of this place are closing up and suspending business, the bank of heaven is still open and doing business on the same old basis, — full salvation for all who apply with the genuine check — prayer and faith. Ask, believe, receive. Mercy is boundless and free. The Lord is with us indeed. Praise his name! We are engaged now in building a house in which to worship the God of heaven. It will be brick, twenty-three by thirty feet outside measure, with a stone foundation. The board tent that old father Bowland gave to us before he died, is in a very poor location, so we began to ask God to know what he would have us do, and to give us a better location. So he put it into the heart of a brother, David Miller, who has just accepted the evening light, and consecrated himself to God to let the Lord have a lot for ten years for the above purpose, we paying the taxes thereon. Is not that something for which to praise God? Amen! Well let all the saints praise the Lord with us. It is a fine shady place for the camp meeting. Praise the Lord for that too! Since we returned from the Grand Junction camp meeting, three consecrated for pardon. On the ninth of this month, five were buried with Christ by baptism, and all came forth rejoicing, having the victory and the witness that God was well pleased with them. Praise our God, all ye his saints! We invite and urge all saints who can to come to the camp meeting. We expect if possible to have the time set to an earlier date the Lord willing. We will be glad to have any of the brethren and sisters who are going west, or east, if this place is on your way, to stop with us over night, or a few days, as the Lord may lead. I would love to hear from Bro. and Sister R. M. and Lizzie Haynes. God bless them. Your humble brother under the blood, that cleanseth me from all sin. Amen.

Springfield, Ill., Aug. 9.

Dearly Beloved Saints: God be with you in all places for Christ’s sake. Amen. Returned to Springfield, Ill., Aug. 5, and joined our company, Bro. Dillon having gone to Ind. the day before, found the word of the Lord was drawing souls to Him. We held forth the words of eternal life to the people in the tabernacle until Wednesday night, Aug. 8, when we closed with many dear friends won to the word of God. In this place we found some good honest souls in the Free Methodist sect, who felt as Paul expressed the Christian’s sentiment, when he said, “We can do nothing against the truth but for it.” That, indeed is the spirit of every child of God. A true Christian will always accept and obey the word of God, at the sacrifice of all past education, traditions, creeds, sects, even time honored, and rendered sacred by the devotion of ancestors.

There are also several good brothers and sisters, who have been taught of God to stand free outside of all sects. These received the word with all readiness. And all together there are left there quite a little company of souls who have pledged obedience to the whole word of God. Some of them are not clear in their souls, but love the truth, and have promised the Lord they would seek his salvation and be faithful in all the will of God. We took a number of subscribers for the Trumpet, and left the people very desirous for our return, or that of some one else who will preach the pure gospel. They will hold weekly prayer meetings. Surely the Lord will send a company of workers there before many months to carry on the work of the Lord, also Clinton and Monticello should be worked up. We believe it is God’s will for the dear messengers of Christ to go, in company, into the cities, procure a cheap place of abode, board yourselves, and trust God to supply all needs, go to work in hall or tabernacle, on the streets, visiting from house to house, and in every way possible bring men and women to God. Get a glorious fire kindled, and then, it will go right on, and burn its way out in the country in every direction. And thus, if the messengers will plant the church of the living God in the cities, the country round about will also hear the word of God sounded out to them.

For our part we feel very clearly called to this line of work. We are just as imperatively called of God to teach the gospel by the pen as by our voice. But while shifting and flying about, we do not have opportunity to obey this order of God. Whereas, by stopping a month or three months in a place, have our regular room and place to wait upon God in prayer, and write between meetings, we can do our share of work in the congregations, and at the same time do more writing than we could in our office at home. This has proved so in our past experience. This being so, of late we begin to feel very much drawn to settle down for a good long siege, shortly after the Pa. camp meeting. Perhaps Butler, Pa. will be the first city campaign. There are calls for meetings in eastern Pa., that we had hoped to respond to, but we now think God will send some one else, some one that has not the duty of writing upon you that we have. Brethren, pray over this and see who the Lord will send.

Now we go to Beaver Dam, Ind. to the glorious camp of the saints, and the beloved city, where we expect the Lord to do great things, in the salvation of souls. Amen.

Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: The Lord bless you all. Since our last report we have been engaged in the Master’s service almost day and night, and through his wonderful power and divine grace, we are able to report a wonderful victory for Jesus over all the power of the enemy. Glory to Jesus! The meeting at the school house near Watkinsville, was a real salvation season. That is, the Lord was with us. Bro’s A. L. Creel, R. Owens, Wm. Mills and others were there, and the Lord clothed his word in mighty power in almost every service. The congregations were large, good behavior, and the saints were wonderfully strengthened. Sinners convicted and mourners were anxiously seeking the Lord. It was a real victory. The meeting near Watkinsville on this side was also a glorious success. The congregations were very large and interest great, sinners convicted and converted, backsliders reclaimed and believers sanctified, and all together deeper settled in the truth, and Satan routed. Glory to Jesus! and from all appearances the work in that part of the country is in a better condition than ever before. The people about Watkinsville had once been tossed by the so-called straight holiness, heresies, and some of that anti-christ heresy known as anti-ordinanceism had been sown among the people in that portion of Miss. But glory to Jesus, the people are deciding to let God be true and all men liars. Who dare differ from Christ and the apostles? I do thank God that through all this holy war he has had some true and tried heroes of faith in this southern field who would never endorse or support any of Satan’s anti-christ ideas. And while our souls have been so tried that it seems wonderful now how we have stood, yet Jesus has been with us and is now giving us the real victory over all the power of the enemy. Glory to His name!

Well we went from Watkinsville to Carthage, stopped and preached one night and arranged for a meeting at that place. From there we went to Renfroe where the assembly meeting is to be held. Preached to a very large congregation and from thence we went on in company with dear Bro’s Mills, Owens and others to Forest school house, nine miles beyond Kosciusco. Here we divided into two companies, Bro. Smith and company commenced meeting five miles this side of Forest school house. Here we have seen God’s power again, wonderfully carrying home his truth home to the hearts of the people. The congregations were very large. Interest good day and night. The last day, Brothers Owens, Mills, and others joined us, then Brothers Smith and Mills started with me to Carthage to hold a meeting in that town. Pray for us. Brother Owens has gone to Ethel. Yours in Christ, under the blood.

Fairbury, Neb., Aug. 11, 1893.

Dearly Beloved of the Most High God: I do praise the dear Lord this morning for his goodness and mercies that he has bestowed upon me, a poor worm of the dust. I am not worthy of all that the Lord has done for me. Praise his name! He has saved me from all sin, and sanctified me wholly. Glory be to God for leading me out of the darkness of this world! And he saw fit to send me out to tell all nations of this wonderful salvation. And that he has made me a watchman that is set upon the wails of Zion. “Which shall never hold their peace day nor night.” Hallelujah to our God! “And give him no rest, till he establish, and make Jerusalem a praise in the earth.” — Isa. 62:6, 7. For Zion’s sake I will not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest. Until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth. Praise ye the Lord! His praises shall be continually be in my mouth. I expect to stand on the walls of Zion all the rest of my days, and cry aloud, spare not, lift up my voice like a trumpet, and show his people their transgressions and the house of Jacob their sins. — Isa. 58:1. Let the high praises of God be in their mouth and a two-edged sword in their hand to execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people. To execute upon them the judgment written. This honor have all his saints. Praise the Lord! Psa. 149:6, 7, 9. I expect to go the Hollenberg camp meeting and from there expect to go west with dear Brother Green, if the Lord wills, and furnishes me with the means. If the way is not open then, I expect to go as soon as the way opens. I have a debt of $15.50 I wish to pay if possible before going west. It was money I received of parties in Kan., that wanted me to order them some Bibles. It was in my trunk at the time our house burned; and I have not been able to repay it yet. Although I told the Lord I would quit the field and work to get it, if he wanted me to, but he hasn’t told me to yet; for the harvest is great and the laborers are few. Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. St. John 4:35. I ask all of God’s little ones to have special prayer for my eye August 27th at 6 o’clock in the evening. While at Kansas City holding meeting in a tent, one of the devil’s agents threw an egg, which struck my right eye, and almost put it out. I can’t see to read with that eye; the sight is fractured somewhat, but I believe the Lord is able to restore the sight. I don’t believe it is to the glory of God to be blind. If God would be glorified I would be willing for the devil to put both of my eyes out, but it is not to his glory. Praise the Lord! Please remember me in your prayers.

Your humble brother, saved and sanctified wholly, all on the altar.

QUESTIONS.

_____

  1. Explain Prov. 26:4, 5.
  2. Eph, 4:27 and 31.
  3. Is it in accordance with the word of God for saved girls to company with unsaved young men?

Answer to first. The text reads as follows: “Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.’’ Answer not a fool according to his folly. The tool that asks a question that is only folly and employs only language that is silly, do not let the devil put spots on your garments by a retort of wit and vanity, lest thou also be like him. Second. “Answer a fool according to his folly.” That is, if you are led to answer a fool at all, give him the answer he needs for the good of his soul. In that way answer him according to his folly, namely, according to what his soul in folly needs.

Answer to second. Eph. 4, 26 reads as follows: “Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath.” This is very important advice to all who have the old want- to-get-angry nature yet in them. If something has stirred that bad inborn nature, be very watchful that it does not carry you away like a flood to commit some act of sin, some outward violence. “Let not the sun go down upon your wrath. Shame on the professor of Christ who allows that inherited bent-to-wrath to fan up and hold its sway of wrath for days. Such sin in so doing, but the sin is not so great if they hasten to subdue the same ere the sun of that day goes down.

But the counsel of verse 31 is much more thorough. “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.” The first verse admonishes you to keep the bad nature in subjection, from bringing outward sin, while it remains in you. The second demands of you to get rid of all bitterness, wrath, anger, etc. Put it away from you, cleanse yourselves from all such inward foes. That is entire sanctification, the second work of grace, which destroys the “old man,” the body of sin, the works of the devil. He that is born of God and lives faithful doth not commit sin, because he keeps the inbred evil in subjection. He that is wholly sanctified does not sin, because he has all the inward bent to sin taken out, and has grace to bruise Satan without, under his feet.

Answer to third. No. “For what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living god; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

No child of God can keep salvation and make the unsaved his or her associates, much less to keep company with such. Yea, more, unless in case where God has united two in real bonds of matrimonial love, even saved children of God will backslide and go into the world if they habitually pair off and walk together and keep company for mere pleasure. Such always get their eyes off Christ and lose the grace of God out of their souls. In the name of Jesus we testify that we have seen. Therefore it is the duty of God’s ministers and elders, and all whom the Lord leads to exhort and admonish God’s children to abstain from such practices that cause the soul to drift from God. This fact also makes it proper and right for any two saints that have been united of God to inform the elders and the saints of God that would be observers of their attentions, that they had been chosen of God for companions in life. Persons feeling a peculiar attraction should pray to God, and never seek special company until they feel assured by the Spirit of God that it is of Him. When this is understood and agreed by both parties and the elder has been notified of the fact, there is no harm, nor anything unreasonable in them enjoying occasional visits, but these should be by day time. Amen.

__________

FAITH DEFINED.

(Continued from last issue.)

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. — Heb. 11:1.

“Substance,” is defined as something real, not imaginary. Faith then makes God’s word real, or true in us, as it is in Him. 2 Cor. 1:20. A sure foundation to live on. Matt. 4:4. That is, we get the things hoped for in our faith and live on them. Hallelujah! The experience thus obtained is the real “evidence,” proof, witness or demonstration of the truth (1 Jno. 5:10), of things not seen. We have not seen Jesus, the Holy Spirit, nor heaven; but by faith we sit in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Eph. 2:6), and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come. — Heb. 6:4, 5. Praise God for such evidence!

Abraham believed God, and his faith is counted for righteousness. Rom. 4:3, 4. Believing God, is faith in action. One says, “How am I to believe God?” I ask, how am I to believe you? You say, “Just believe my word, and you believe me.” Very well, just believe God’s word aright, and you believe God. “But how can I know when I believe it aright?” Ans. First, obey the conditions required in the Word. Second, believe God’s word through to him, by his help, until you get an answer from Him, and then you will know for yourself.

In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of Him. — Eph. 3:12 and 2:18. Faith is access to God through his word, and from him it is access to what he has promised. Rom. 5:2. The word of God is the highway to heaven and by faith we travel it. The word of God is also the wire that reaches from the great heart of God to our hearts, and faith travels it with messages each way, with more than lightning speed. The man who only sends up a few such messages is carrying on a very small business with the Lord. God is much better pleased with us doing a large and useful business with Him, sending and receiving dispatches, thick and fast. Without faith it is impossible to please Him. Heb. 11:6.

Faith without works is dead — Jas. 2:20. Faith works by love (Gal. 5:6), and with power (2 Thess. 1:11 and 3), and when rightly used it groweth exceedingly. Faith, being a fruit of the Spirit, is found among the fruits of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22), and as a gift of the Spirit, we find it among the spiritual gifts. 1 Cor. 12:9.

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. — Rom. 10:17. Not literal hearing alone, but spiritual hearing, or the deaf could not obtain faith.

The faith of Jesus (Rev. 14:12), then comes to us through His word as we receive the truth as it is in Jesus. Faith always operates through God’s truth; and by his Spirit on God’s part, and by the will in obedience on man’s part, using this God-given ability to the glory of God.

As we have defined natural faith to be the natural ability to receive testimony, either true or false, we may also define “the faith once delivered unto the saints,” as the God- given ability to receive his testimony, which is always true. Jno. 17:17. To receive the truth as it is in fact, includes both the experience and practice of the truth, and the benefits that follow.

Dear Saints: I feel led of the Lord to write my experience. They that are led by the spirit of God they are the sons of God. Glory to God for his precious promises to his children. I am by the help of the Lord telling the people here about Jesus and his power to save and to keep. The Lord is leading me on from victory to victory. Praise His dear name! There is an opening here for a great work. People seem to be anxious to hear the truth. But I need a helper. Pray that I may keep humble and low at the feet of Jesus and not shun to declare the whole truth. Saved and sanctified,

H. Slaughter.

Dear Saints and Readers of the Trumpet: I feel led to write my testimony. God is wonderfully helping me. I have taken Jesus for my healer of both my soul and body. I used to be always leaning on the profession of some one else, but I have learned to lean on Jesus. Sister Mary Cole & Co. have been preaching here in these parts for awhile, and there has been many souls saved. Dear saints pray for the people in this place. I am praising God for ever bringing me out in this blessed evening light. I ask you to earnestly pray for me that I may know my place in Father’s vineyard.

Your sister saved and sanctified by a second work of grace.

Dear Saints: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony to the TRUMPET. O praise the Lord for salvation that saves from all sin and sanctifies me wholly. The Lord showed me I was a sinner and 1 would be lost if I did not come to him. For a week before I came to Jesus, I was so convicted that I could have no peace anywhere until I came to Him and got salvation. I can not praise the Lord enough for saving me from this world. When I look around and see how the world is in sin it makes me praise the Lord with all my heart that I ever found Jesus. Your sister in Christ,

Minnie B. Defore.

Dear Saints of the Living God: I am praising God this morning for a full and free salvation that keeps me from all sin. Oh! praise his dear name forever! I do realize that I have been made to sink deeper and deeper into the will of God, for which I give Him all the glory. July 4, I went to Cornell, Nebraska and met dear Brother Achor and the saints at that place, where we did realize that God received great glory. Dear ones, when you read this, let a solemn prayer ascend in our behalf that we may ever be found walking in that strait and narrow path that leads to eternal life. Your sister in Christ,

Carrie Morland.

To the Saints and Faithful ones in Christ Jesus: I feel led of God this afternoon to write my testimony of His wonderful love to me. I can say to the glory of God that I am saved just now, and sanctified wholly. Praise God forever and ever. I do give Him all the glory for what He has done for poor unworthy me. Three years ago this last spring I was adopted in the holy family of God, and what a rejoicing there was in heaven over one sinner that repented, and the dear Lord has kept me sweetly saved ever since. Glory be to His name. Oh what love He puts in my heart for the true children of God. Truly the saints are my companions, and how much I love to read the GOSPEL TRUMPET. It is next to my Bible; it is such food to my soul and help to my spiritual life that I don’t want to go without it. I do praise the Lord for sending Bro. Michels to Otsego three years ago. There I heard the evening light preached. Pray for me, dear ones, that I may be kept humble at Jesus’ feet. Your sister in Christ,

L. A. Smith.

Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: May God’s richest blessings rest upon you all now and forever. I feel to glorify God by telling what he has done tor my soul. This beautiful morning finds me sweetly saved in Jesus and sanctified to do his whole will. The Son of righteousness is still shining in my soul. Oh hallelujah! I feel more determined than ever to go on in this holy way. Truly the way grows brighter and brighter every day. My cup is filled to the brim, pressed down and running over. Oh praise the Lord! I cannot begin to tell you dear reader how good the dear Lord is to me, and my heart goes out in sympathy for the unsaved and those that are walking in darkness. Dear brothers and sisters, I ask you to remember my unsaved daughter and son. The Lord could use them in his vineyard. And oh dear ones make my husband a special subject of prayer that he may be led out of all sect confusion. I need your prayers that I stand true to God. I am just willing to sit at the feet of Jesus and be used in any way. I do believe there is going to be a great reformation in this town. The Lord is working on the hearts of the people, and the harvest is truly ripe. I am willing to do with all my might what my hands find to do. Yours, saved and separated from every thing that is not of God. May God bless you all.

Dear Trumpet Family and all the Household of God: My testimony this morning is I am rejoicing in his great love which has brought me out of all the doctrines of men, and standing on his precious promises and do feel thankful in my very soul for this glorious light of the everlasting gospel, for truly it is a light to lighten the Gentiles, and I have accepted this gteat salvation through faith and am walking in the light as he is in the light. O pray for me dear saints that my feet may never slip or fail to tread the narrow way that was cast up for the redeemed, but steadfastly go on to eternal victory. O praise his name forever more. Our hearts leaped with joy when we read of the glorious victory at the Grand Junction camp meeting, and again when we read the announcement of the camp meeting to be held here in September. Already the park has been secured by Bro’s Colwell and Gates and we are just asking the dear Lord to send us enough of his dear ones to shake this wicked city from center to circumference, for truly they are a people who are wise in their own conceit. “And O how lofty are their eyes, and their eyelids are lifted up” — Prov 30:13. But we are trusting and praying for precious souls even here for God wills that all men should be saved, and it is His will. Let us buckle on the whole armor of God that the battle be led on to victory and much good be done, and God be glorified for his mighty saving power.

Your saved sister and worker in the vineyard,

Mrs. H. E. Annis.

Dear Saints of God: May God’s richest blessings be and abide with you all, both now and forever. Amen. Today finds me fully saved in Jesus. Praise His name! I can say that the way grows brighter every day, and I am learning to trust in God more and more. O dear ones, we can do more to glorify God by living pure and holy lives than we often can by talking it. May God help each one of us to know His will and do it. God says in his word, If ye be willing and obedient ye shall eat the good of the land. — Isa. 1:19. Praise God for ever and ever! He has made the way so plain that “the wayfaring man, though a fool, shall not err therein.” So dear ones if we do not eat the good of the land it is because we are not in the order of the Lord. May God help us one and all to live every day so that we may know just where we stand in the sight of God. O how my heart goes out for poor perishing souls. It is so sad to see such a vast number standing in their way, professing to know God, but their hearts are far from Him. For by fire and by His sword will the Lord plead with all flesh, and the slain of the Lord shall be many. — Isa. 66:16. Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision. — Joel 3:14.

May God help the people to see that he is calling his children together, for the coming of the Lord is near at hand. It shall be as when a hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude, yea all the nations be that fight against mount Zion. — Isa. 29:8. The devil is giving them soothing syrup to keep them asleep. Wherefore he saith, “Awake thou that sleepeth, arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.” May God bless the people and help them to see, is my prayer. Your sister saved,

Rose Wilcox.

To all the Saints Greeting: May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony once more to the glory of God. I am still saved with an everlasting salvation, and have victory over all the works of the devil, and kept by the power of God from day to day, ready to be revealed in the last time, and am as much determined to stand true to God as I ever was. I am more settled and established than I ever was. God is wonderfully leading me from victory to victory. Glory to God, it does seem to me that my heart is expanding more and more with the joys of salvation. Oh, how wonderful to behold the real joys of salvation. Oh, how blessed it is to live low down at His feet and see no one save Jesus. I am living each day as though it were my last, so when Jesus comes I shall be ready.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee because he trusteth in Thee. Trust ye in the Lord for ever, for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength. — Isa. 26:3, 4.

The dear Lord saw fit to call my dear parents home years ago. I have no one to look to but Jesus. He is a father to me; He does wonderfully care for me; provides for me in ways I would hardly think of. Bless His holy name! I have had homes with the dear saints around Beaver Dam for over four years, and God has wonderfully provided for all my needs. May the richest of heaven’s blessings ever rest upon all the dear saints at Beaver Dam, and reward them for their kindness is my prayer. The Lord wonderfully led me out in these parts last March at the home of dear Bro. and Sister Henry Smith, near Saturn, Whittey county, Ind. Do not know how long I shall remain here, but so long as the Lord leads. I have visited with some of the saints near here and had some precious times together; also had some precious little meetings. The Lord wonderfully blesses our souls every time we meet together. Praise the Lord! The devil is also hard at work seeking whom he may devour, through some crooked one coming in among the true children of God hear in these parts. My earnest desire and prayer to God is that every one may prove true to God.

Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life whereunto thou art also called and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. — 1 Tim. 6:12.

Your humble sister saved and sanctified, and satisfied with Jesus. Pray for me.

Sarah N. Wells.
