A Voice From the Harvest Field.

_____

Saints of God, the dawn is brightening,
With the glory of the Lord;
O’er the earth the field is whitening:
Now recall the Master’s word —
Pray for reapers
In the harvest of the Lord.

Long we’ve sowed with toil and sadness,
Weeping o’er the waste around;
Now we gather grains of gladness,
Ripened wheat may now be found.
Blessed reapers!
How their joys may now abound!

Now O Lord, fulfill thy pleasure;
Use thy consecrated band,
Culling out the precious treasure
From the tares o’er all the land.
Make us reapers:
We’re awaiting thy command.

Soon will end the time of reaping,
Soon the happy day will come,
When with joy we shall be taking
God’s eternal harvest home.
Oh what rapture!
Never, never more to roam.

W. H. Morris.

“YE DOUBLEMINDED.”

_____

“Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded.” Jas. 4:8.

The saying of James, has been misunderstood and wrested throughout the dark ages of Babylon, where the wisdom of God was not heard, or the Holy Ghost allowed to do its office work, that is, to teach us all things. It has been somewhat of a task for sect professors to locate the “double- minded,” and many have stumbled over this important command of James, not being able to rightly divide the word of truth. But there were some who were able to fathom this, and to get the experience of the oneminded people of God. But it is impossible, without the Holy Spirit, to understand a spiritual book, and we all know Babylon is sadly destitute of the Spirit. But thank God, the works of darkness have passed away and the true light of God doth once more shine as it did when James uttered these words. And the Holy Spirit has temples now where he can dwell and be heard in all things. Praise the Lord!

We will now endeavor by the Holy Spirit guiding us to show by the word whom James had reference to. You see there are two classes of people referred to in the text; namely, “sinners” and “doubleminded.” Now who are the doubleminded? Webster defines it as a man having different minds at different times; unsettled; wavering; undetermined. It is evident he was not referring to the sinner, for he first speaks to them in behalf of their condition, and says, “Cleanse your hands,” that is, have your sins forgiven; and we see by the word that a sinner has only one mind. “Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of the flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.” Eph. 2:3. “And you that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled.” Col. 1:21. And Jeremiah tells us that the natural state of man’s heart is deceitful and desperately wicked. Jer. 17; 9. And Isa. says of the sinner, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.” 55:8. So we see by the above scriptures that a sinner has only one mind, and that is to do the works of his father. Jno. 8:44, and without any opposition. Well then, says one, it must be the sanctified people, as there are only the two classes. No, it is not the wholly sanctified people, for they only have one mind, so says the word. “And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul [one mind]: neither said any of them that aught of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.” — Acts 4:31-32. Now you see these people were sanctified and they only had one mind. And Paul says to the sanctified, to stand fast in one spirit, with one mind, striving together for the faith of the gospel. — Phil. 1:27. “That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” — Rom. 15:6. And as Paul was bidding farewell to the justified brethren at Corinth, he said, “Be perfect, be of one mind, and the God of peace shall be with you.” He admonished them to attain unto perfection, verse 9, and when that is attained we all become one. — Heb. 2:11.

Now we see the “doubleminded” aer not the sanctified, neither are they the sinners, but are a separate class of people between the two, called the justified, and who have not yet attained to perfection in Christ. Webster says, to justify is to pardon; to absolve. And Paul says, to be justified is to be free from our actual sins and to have peace with God, but says such an one is not free from the carnal mind. Read 1 Cor. 3:1-3. Now when a sinner comes to God, he gets pardon of all his sins and is partaker of a new and divine nature; but there still remains another nature in which so many of the brethren in Paul’s time had so much trouble with; namely, the carnal nature, which only entire sanctification will destroy.

Now for some proofs on this matter, let us examine the word of God.

First, let us notice the dual state of these two natures as marked out in Rom. 7. Many are undecided as to the meaning of this chapter. Some claim it is descriptive of Paul’s best attainment in life; and thus seek to extenuate sin in themselves. But we see by reading the context that Paul had no reference to his own personal experience at that time. In the 6th chapter and 19th verse, he says, “I speak after the manner of men, because of the infirmity of your flesh.” He accommodates his speech to their weakness. He condescends from the experience of an holy apostle and talks to them “after the manner of men,” unsanctified men. In other words he steps down and talks to them from the standpoint of their own condition, and thereby draws a picture of their own state, to make them understand their unsanctified hearts, and what they needed, and yet avoid offending them by a more direct exposure of their state. If this were the apostle’s experience it would conflict with the facts of his life. It is not true at all that the good he wished to do he did not, and the evil he would not, that he did. Did he not go about continually doing good? And was not his life pure, holy, and free from evil doing? Nay, he did not travel about wishing to do good, and indulging in evil practices and disgracing his profession. He told the Corinthian brethren to follow after him, and would not he be a bad example for a child of God to follow after if this were his life in the 7th of Romans? What Paul wished to show to them was the necessity of getting sanctified wholly and getting the one mind destroyed which wanted to do evil, and would not move in harmony with the one that wanted to do good. How true the language is to every soul that has not passed through justification and entered into sanctification, that “the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.” — Gal. 5:17. And this keeps up a continual warfare, each one wanting the pre-eminence as this chapter shows. But thank God, there has been a way prepared in which the opposing one can be destroyed and that is, by the blood of Jesus. — Heb. 13:12. People who fight two works of grace are such as have not the first, for if they had, they would want the second very soon and get rid of the warfare.

But this is not the only evidence we have in the word of God. We will now proceed to Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. He addresses them as brother, saints, chap. 1:1, which implies they were born of God, but we see Paul calls them carnal in the 3d chapter. Now how can this be? says one. Well we see Paul treating them the same as he did the Roman brethren who were not sanctified, and showing us that the carnal nature is not destroyed in justification. These brethren were carnal; but still Paul calls them brethren. And so it is with every justified soul that is unsanctified, the nature is still in him that wants to get angry and do the works of the flesh as specified in Gal. 5:19- 21. And before we can live in this state very long, one is bound to get the pre-eminence over the other.

James also sets forth a very clear example of this duel between the two minds. Jas. 3:9, 10 says, “Therewith [spiritual mind] bless we God even the Father, and therewith [carnal mind] curse we man, which is made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursings [carnal and spiritual minds]. My brethren these things ought not so to be.” The spiritual mind wants to praise and bless God, and worship him, and do his will, while the carnal mind wants to do opposite. This is the reason why James says that a doubleminded man is unstable in all his ways.

Now we have an example of this in Peter’s case in Matt. 26:33. The Spiritual mind in Peter said to Jesus, “Peter answered and said unto him, “Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.” But Jesus answered and said, “Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. Then said the spiritual mind, “Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee.” But how did it act? Did the spiritual nature hold the pre-eminence, or did it fail? Now read 69-75 verses, and see how it resulted. Here you see the carnal nature predominated. Oh dear unsanctified ones, take a lesson from this, and don’t let the carnal nature run in your heart, but see that it is crucified, for if you do not, you are liable to deny Christ. Remember Peter was not yet sanctified, for the Holy Ghost was not yet given.

Also another evidence is clearly shown in Eph. 4:22-32, which is similiar to the ones above. I will not take the room to comment on it, but just turn and read it for yourself. And I pray God to give you light on this subject for it is one of vast importance; and unless you have become holy, or attained to entire sanctification, and crucified the carnal nature, after you are convicted that such is your duty and privilege, you are not a fit subject for heaven. And without holiness, Paul says, no man shall see the Lord. — Heb. 12:14. Yours with the one mind of Christ,

O. J. Sybert.

PARENTS’ DUTY TO CHILDREN.

_____

(Continued from June 28 issue.)

I believe it would be to the glory of God to suggest a few more thoughts in regard to parents’ duty to children. Now you know the Word says, “Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.” Col. 3:20. And again, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” Eph. 6:1. The latter quotation gives us the correct meaning of the first. Lest some unsaved parents should take advantage and try to compel their children to obey them in the wrong, God speaks through his servant and says, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord;” that is, in every thing that pleases God. But if parents should require their children to do something that God’s word condemns, according to God’s word they have no right to do it.

I have heard fathers and mothers tell their children to do such and such things, which would be all right for them to do, but the children would answer hack, “I shan’t do it,” and, “I won’t do it,” and, “You may do it yourself,” and such like; and the parents would not correct their children for being so saucy, but would go ahead and do what they had told their children to do, encouraging them in disobedience. Now parents, you know that is not right. Surely that is not bringing your children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Eph. 6:4. Children should never be allowed to answer their parents back again, for if they are allowed to do so, soon they will ignore their authority and discipline and say it doesn’t amount to anything; and soon you will hear the parents saying, “Oh I just can’t control my children.” Why? Because they have lightly esteemed their own authority and power to control by letting their children answer them back. Now parents, will you profit by this admonition?

I have also heard children call their parents irreverend names, such as, “Dad,” “ Mam,” “old boss,” “the old man,” and so on, and then get no correction for it. Now parents, you are not doing your children justice, much less yourselves, and in so doing you are teaching your children to disobey God and dishonor you. Listen to what the word of God says: “Honor thy father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise.” Eph. 6:2. Some one may ask, What is the promise? “That thy days may be long upon the land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” Ex. 20:1, 2. Paul adds, “That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long upon the earth.” Eph. 6:3. So if children want it to be well with themselves they must honor their parents, both in obeying and reverencing them, Now there is another idea handed down from the dark ages which I feel God wants corrected right here. That is, that children should not seek God while they are young. Listen to what our Savior says: “Suffer lit-children and forbid them not, to come unto me, for of such is the kingdom of heaven. And he laid his hands on them.” Matt. 19:14, 15; also Matt. 18:1-5. “And they brought young children to him that he would touch them; and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it he was much displeased, and said unto them, “Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them and blessed them.” Mar. 10:13-16. Now certainly these are very plain proofs and need no comments, to show that Jesus wants little children to come unto him. And lest some might pervert the scriptures and say that he just meant grown people that were children in experience, and that he did not mean small children at all, let us for a moment notice verse 16: “And he took them up in his arms and put his hands on them.” Now that looks like they were small children, doesn’t it? If they had been grown people he wouldn’t have taken them up in his arms. Oh how good the Lord is, to make this so plain to our understanding! The false idea that children have to grow up in the ways of the world and be educated by the enemy of their souls and be bound by bad and pernicious habits, before they are old enough to seek the Lord and live a Christian life — oh how absurd! Truly it is instruction from the evil one. Now dear ones, would it surprise any of you if I were to tell you that I saw a little girl only four years old that knew what it meant to have godly sorrow, and also to have a knowledge of sins forgiven? I have seen them even younger than that, filled with the Spirit of God. As soon as a child is old enough to know right from wrong, and feels condemned when it does wrong, it is certainly old enough to go to God and ask forgiveness, and receive the same understanding. If you want children to be obedient to their parents, let them have the fear of God before their eyes, then they will obey their parents through love, yes, love to God and love to their parents. It will truly be a service of love. When children obey their parents through fear, as soon as their back is turned they will disobey them. Young minds are like soft wax; and when they give their hearts to God while they are young, it is so much easier to mould them the right way. Look at the precious promises that cluster around a life wholly devoted to God from childhood. “For the promise is unto you and to your children.” Acts 2:39. “Those that seek me early shall find me.” Prov. 8:17. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matt. 6:33. “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth.” Eccl. 12:1. God does not give young people or children license to sin, any more than he does any one else, and we know his word positively prohibits all from sinning. 1 John 2:1. 1 Cor. 15:34. Rom. 6:1, 2, 12-15. I could give you many more scriptures on the same point, but deem it unnecessary, but will add one more, showing that God has made provisions for us living holy all our life. “That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.” Luke 1:74, 75. So you see we have no excuse for serving the devil any part of our life. I have seen those that had sought and found the Lord when they were small children, and although after they got older they lost their experience for awhile, they said the only thing that kept them from being skeptics was the knowledge they had of Christ when they were small, and that was also the means of leading them back to the dear Savior. So does not their eternal destiny depend much on the first knowledge they receive of Christ

A WONDERFUL SUFFERER.

Not having heard from Bro. S. B. Heeter for a long time it seems a few nights ago the Lord woke me up and brought the dear brother at once upon my mind, and an earnest prayer in my heart to God in his behalf. I was strongly impressed that the dear brother was yet bound in the prison of affliction and suffering. Oh can it be possible that mystery of suffering is still going on? And is the grace of God sufficient? And now I open a letter from the dear man of suffering, and read, “I am still a great sufferer in great pain, and am growing weaker, and losing appetite, and feel so sick on my stomach.

I think the good Lord will soon deliver me. The Lord’s will be done, not mine. We are still saved and doing the will of our God. Oh pray much for us, for the Lord to give me patience to bear up. Oh I am so glad that I started to serve God, soon as I did.”

The dear brother further says, none of the saints have been to visit them for a long time. Though there are none near, brethren who can should not neglect to visit a brother in such extreme and prolonged suffering and distress. Brethren in your other duties of life, God help you to remember that you are in danger of hearing Christ say to you in the day of judgment, “I was in great pain, in sickness and in want, and you came not to see me.”

Now that family needs help immediately. Their cook stove has given out, so that the sister has to take her bread to the neighbors to bake it. And having the care of her husband, and the garden to tend. Brethren, this thing must not be so in Israel. Let all the saints in Pa. especially send them help at once or take them a good cook stove. Let the elders of the churches attend to this at once. Amen.

IT IS ANTI-CHRIST.

_____

To us have been sent some tracts written by W. R. Adams, entitled “Clergyman’s Looking Glass” No. 1, and No 2, with a request that we read and judge whether sound or not. A very few paragraphs are sufficient to enable us to label these vials ANTI-CHRIST POISON. Vial No. 1 denies the real divinity of Christ and the Holy Spirit. Denies that Christ was either God or man, and thereby contradicts the entire Bible description of him. The very “mystery of godliness,” 1 Tim. 3:16, which sets forth the trinity of the Godhead, this blasphemer calls the “mystery of Babylon.”

Vial No 2, starts out with this falsehood that the disciples “were called Christians by divine authority or appointment.” The facts are, as seen on the face of the scriptural record, and so recorded in history, they were so-called by outside parties. The writer applies the prophecy of Isa. 62:2 to the name of Christian, which is a perversion of the word. The prophecy above cited, announces that the church “should be named by the mouth of the Lord.” Had Acts 11:26 been the fulfillment, it would have been recorded that the disciples, by the mouth of the Lord were called Christians, that it might be definitely known that that name was given by divine authority. Again, would the Lord Jesus purchase, build and organize his church, and let it maintain an anonymous existence for ten years? The record of Acts 11:26, was A. D. 43, ten years after the church was fully organized and equipped with power. Nay, we have plain record of the fulfillment of Isa. 62:2 in John 17. Christ kept the church in the Father’s name, and prayed that their perfect unity should be preserved only in the name of God the Father, which the inspired apostles understood and called the church of God, which is the only proper church title given to the body of Christ as a whole in the New Testament.

BEAVER DAM, IND. CAMP MEETING

Will be held on Brother David Leininger’s farm three and one-half miles west of B. D., and seven east of Rochester, Ind. Aug. 14-23. Every body is invited to attend this meeting both saints and sinners with the expectation of receiving good. We expect a glorious meeting let all the saints look to God and pray to this end that souls may be saved and delivered out of the power of darkness, and for the saints, that they may advance spiritually, for God is on the forward move. We kindly invite and insist on all to bring their own bedding as we cannot furnish bedding. There will be a boarding house on the grounds; boarding at reasonble rates. Also provisions will be kept for those who wish to board themselves. Board free to all God’s ministers and workers in the field and all the Lord’s poor, but we do not think stout hearty young men with able bodies should class themselves as too poor to pay their way at camp meeting as has been the case before. Those coming on the Nickel Plate, stop at Mentone, those coming on the C. & E. and Lake Erie & Western stop at Rochester. There will be a hack run from those two stations; fare twenty-five cents, large trunks some extra charge. All wishing to be met at depot, address Abram Nye, Rochester, Ind. All camp meeting mail address to Rochester. Any information wanted address Brother David Leininger or R. N. Gast.

Good canvass tents 9×12 can be rented for use during camp meeting at Neosho Falls, Kan., Sept 6-17, by notifying me at least ten days before meeting begins. Tents will cost about $2.00. Persons attending are requested to furnish their own bedding and other things necessary for use during their stay, as it is impossible to provide for any but workers at this place. Board can be obtained at reasonable rates near the ground. Good seed was sown here last year. We think the attendence from surrounding country will be large. The presence of all saints who can come will be of great aid in the meeting. The park is situated in casy walking distance from the M. K. & T. and Santa Fe R. R’s. Pray that all that we may do, may’ be done to the glory of God. Your sister in Christ,

WOMAN’S FAITH HOME.

_____

Danville, Ill.

Dear Saints in the Lord: I need your prayers, and as the Spirit leads I will write concerning the work the Master has laid at my door. I felt led to day to write this letter and state facts plainly. Glory to God for persecutions and trials! But better still I praise him for his wonderful keeping power! When I was at the camp meeting the dear Lord showed me what his work for me is. I can not do it with out human help and I am sure Father will choose the helpers from among the saints. Thank God! I am one, though I did not like to say so at first. This is God’s plan as I now see his leading: I am to remain here a short while longer and then with a company of (possibly four others) go from city to city, establishing rescue homes for lost women. We will stay in each city as long as the Lord may require, but on an average of two months, and do house to house visitation, preaching every where, to the respectable as well as fallen, and thus interest the people in the work as well as carry the true light. Then two or three chosen of the Lord would carry that work on while we would go some place else as God would lead.

When I was about ten years old God laid his hand on me for future work, and told me “to go into all the world and preach the gospel.” A year ago I received the message, “To do the work of an evangelist,” 2 Tim. 4:5, and was led out on the faith line according to Matt. 10th. The burden of fallen women was laid on my heart, and I could not reconcile the two, until at the camp meeting God showed me evangelist work and establishment of rescue homes could be one work, and was my work. Bless his dear name! It is truly the hardest work in the whole warfare, but “my grace is sufficient,” and “in him we stand complete,” are my helps. I know I am weak and incompetent, but God is to do the work and I am a vessel through which he can work. My life is God’s, for I have made a complete consecration. “Who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the Lord?” I have, glory to God! Who will help me? Without help this work in Danville will fail and none other could be taken up.

The following is a plan, as God has led me to see, of the right way to carry on these homes.

They should not be institutions, but homes in ever sense of the word. Nothing but love and a sweet atmosphere of holy living can win these precious souls. How tenderly Jesus dealt with them! How he loved them! They are a class that will not go to religious services and consequently are the class most neglected. Who will help carry the gospel to them?

We would pray, as the first step toward opening a home after Father led us to a city, concerning the location, neighborhood best suited for the home. The Eye would search it out for us. The Spirit would lead us to it. We would receive the money from him who says “The silver and gold are mine,” rent the house and furnish it in answer to prayer and faith, and then one, an elderly sister preferred because they can more easily command respect, would stay in the house and act as matron. The younger women would then begin to visit from door to door and tell of Jesus’ mighty saving power and of the work he led us to undertake. The dear Lord would warm their hearts to the work, and as soon as possible we would begin to visit the houses of ill-fame, and soon the work would be established. Thank God! He can save even the vilest.

There are a few simple rules which seem to be necessary. No rough language allowed. All letters written or received must be read by the sister in charge. She must also be present if company calls (either male or female), because if other girls call on the inmates, messages could be carried. “They that win souls are wise.” Oh pray for me that our Father may get me and keep me very low before him and cause me to be as wise as a serpent and harmless as a dove. When the girls get disorderly, prayer is the whip usee and proves effectual.

While I was at camp meeting the devil had full sway in the home. The people said it was outrageous that I went away and they said they would do no more for us. The preacher told the agent that the work was dead and the citizens of Danville (they meant the sects) were not going to help any more and he might as well rent the house to them for the protestant hospital. He did, and told me five days before the month was up that I should vacate. We are behind thirty-seven dollars with the rent (this was a trial of my faith) or else he would not have told us to leave. I shall just rent a house elsewhere and go on obeying the Lord. But the work can not stand unless the Lord raises up missionaries or a matron. One other thing I wish to add: If there is a mother in Israel who can perform the the duties of a midwife, and who is willing to consecrate her service to the Lord and be one of the company, we know it would wonderfully help the work and she would be richly blessed for her service. There were no doctors in Israel but there were mid wives.

Any one being led of the Lord to correspond with me concerning the work or desiring to help in any way. should address me at once, for now is the time the Lord is ready to answer the prayer I have so earnestly made for five months, and help will come. Praise the Lord! Your sister in the one body,

Mary Houskeeper.

__________

TO THE MINISTERS.

_____

To all the beloved brethren in the ministry, greeting: “We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers; remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labor of love.” “Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God,” and your calling and anointing for the rescue of perishing souls, we are constrained to write you this short letter to stir you up, if possible, to more decided action in this good work wherein ye are engaged. Our very soul within us has oft been stirred, upon a remembrance of the great financial burdens under which many of you are held ont of the work of the ministry. But thank God we can now tell you that you need not be held at home to care for your families any longer. God has provided a home upon the Camp Ground at Grand Junction, Mich., especially for the preachers’ children; and Bro. Michels is being held out of the field much of the time, especially to care for the ministers’ children. And now my beloved brethren, why should we be held at home to do the work that Bro. Michels is held at home to do? The dear brother sends a cordial invitation to all the holy ministers approved of God in the work of saving souls, to bring your children to the home, and go forth free from the care and burden of your families into the Lord’s work. Now can we beloved brethren, if we are held at home to care for our families refuse to let this kind brother rear our children for us and be found clear before God in the great day to come? To do so is to reject the very plan and institution of almighty God. And does not the very love of Christ constrain us to accept this wise plan of our heavenly Father to free ourselves for the gospel work? True, the sacrifice of the society of our sweet little ones is a great one, but remember Jesus hath said: “He that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” Matt. 10:37. If you feel that God holds you to look after the maintenance of your children, you can from time to time send to the home what the Lord provides along the way and you will thus help to trust the Lord for the maintenance of your families. The home is provided with a good comfortable school-house and a good teacher, and your children will be educated and cared for better than you can possibly care for them yourself while engaged in the gospel work. We are therefore without a single excuse if we are not constantly engaged in the work of the Lord; and God will hold us responsible for all the souls who might have been saved under our labors had we been constantly in the field; and in the day of judgment our hands will not be found clean in his sight, and our garments will be stained with the blood of lost souls. Oh dear brethren! awake to the fact that God holds us responsible for the souls of this lost world until we have done all in our power to save them. Your brother filled with the Holy Spirit,

Wm. G. Schell.

I am now sixty miles west of ElRena, sixty miles from R. R. This is a new country, very thinly settled yet. Three souls blessedly saved, to God be all the glory. The tent was set up at Arapahoe last night and had a congregation of about one hundred. They listened attentively, and I believe souls are going to be saved. This is a hard place. The Lord wiling we may hold a meeting at ElRena. I would like to have some tracts for free distribution. I believe good can be done by them. Pray mightily for me. I am ready to do, or go anywhere for Jesus. Any one desiring meeting address me here.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Greeting: This lovely morning we are praising God for his goodness to the children of men. We have just closed a twelve days meeting in the Bell neighborhood, where Bro. and Sister Cole held a meeting some years ago. It was a profitable meeting. The saints were very busy wheat harvesting, nevertheless they attended the meeting, and were blessed and enouraged to press on for the prize set before us. On Sunday quite a crowd gathered after the morning service at the beautiful Gasconade river, to witness the baptism of three precious souls. Praise our God forever! Oh how sweet to follow Jesus!

Yours in the work of the Master,

Dearly Beloved Saints, Greeting: We are praising the dear Lord for victory over the devil and all his work, and for the joy of the Lord in our souls. We left our home on the 28th of June for the Northwest. Arrived at Barron, Wis. the 30th in the evening; were met by some of the dear children of God, ready to convey us to the camp ground. The meeting lasted over two Sundays, and closed with great success in the conversion of many sinners and the sanctifying of believers. On the last Sunday afternoon we observed the ordinances of the Lord’s house, in washing the saints’ feet and in breaking bread. The Lord did witness this sacred ordinance to many newly born babes in Christ. On Monday five dear souls followed the Lord in baptism. After a day’s rest we came to this place. Have rented a hall and expect to begin services to night the Lord willing. Last night we had a glorious service on the streets. Dearly beloved, pray for us that the Lord may use us to his glory in the salvation of precious souls. Yours in Christ, saved to the uttermost,

S. Michels & Co.

FLOATING BETHEL.

Shippingport, Pa. July 11, 1894.

Dear Saints, and Trumpet Readers: God bless you all. We are glad to report to you that we are saved ond kept by the power of God, still fighting the fight of faith. Praise God forever and ever! After the Grand Junction camp meeting we came with Bro. Riggle & Co. to this place; have been here on the Floating Bethel with Bro. Clayton. We are holding a meeting here that is being blessed of God; the people are very attentive, and seem anxious for the truth; thank God for honest souls. Several raised their hands for prayer last night, and we believe a good work will be accomplisned here, and to God be all the glory. To night we commence a meeting at Industry, a town about one mile above this place. Expect to keep both meetings going. Bro. Riggle and I will stay here until July 18, then we go to Pittsburgh. Now there is need of some more good consecrated, God-sent laborers here on the boat at once. Who is being called? Any one feeling led to come, please write to Bro. G. T. Clayton at once. Also the boat is without an anchor, and one is needed very much in moving from place to place. Bro. Clayton thinks one can be had for about twenty dollars. Who can help in this matter? God is surely in the work and we verily believe this boat will be the means in God’s hands of the salvation of many precious souls, and to open the work in many places. Let all pray for the success of this work; and while you pray, remember it takes means as well as prayers, and any one being led of God to send money to Bro. Clayton, will surely get their reward. We are glad to say that our health is improving, and I believe God will keep us in perfect health, so we can be in constant labor in the future. We expect to remain here in Pa. till after the camp meetings, and then prepare for the eastern work where we will go with a company of workers this winter, Lord willing. Any one wishing to write us can address us at Grand Junction, Mich., and it will be forwarded to us. Pray for us dear ones, and for the success of the work intrusted in our care. Your brother fully saved in Jesus.

_____

Grand Junction, Mich., July 17, 1894

Dear Saints of God: Being moved by the Spirit of the Lord to attend the grove meeting near Clam Lake in northern Michigan, I started for that place July 6. being delayed in Grand Rapids one day, the time was improved by distributing tracts and making visits for the benefit of souls. Among the places visited was the “Beulah Faith Home” of which Mrs Dudley is proprietress. Her work is carried on in league with sectism, which she upholds as zealously as she does the Lord Jesus. While she teaches many Bible truths, yet her chief point of doctrine is one of error, and she is anxiously awaiting the coming of the Lord to set up a literal kingdom here on earth and reign a thousand years, during which the children of God who are not yet sanctified will have a chance to complete their salvation. Christ said: “The kingdom of God cometh not with observation . . . Behold the kingdom of God is within you.” — Luke 17:20, 21. If it comes “not with observation,” — that is, cannot be seen — and Jesus has told us so, why need people so blindly look for a literal reign. “Behold now is the eay of salvation: behold now is the accepted time.”

Another man held for his pet doctrine, the idea that the millennium was yet to come and would be a time of spiritual reign here on earth, when Zion shall return from the captivity, and that no one is wholly sanctified yet. He holds that people are at the present time only sanctified by faith like Abraham, looking forward for something to come. Thank God! We live in a time when the prophecy is being fulfilled, that Babylon is fallen and God is calling his children out of captivity (Rev. 18:2-4.) and many have obeyed the voice and come out. and are separate, (1 Cor. 6:14-17,) and are happy in the midst of Zion, clothed with robes of righteousness, in the beauty of holiness.

The meeting at Clam Lake, was a very precious one. A few souls consecrated themselves to the Lord, and the church was wonderfully strengthened and built up in the Lord. Monday and Tuesday were spent with the brethren at East Jordan where the Lord has a few children, and a profitable meeting was held in his name.

Feeling much impressed by the Spirit of the Lord to go to Bay View, on Wednesday the directions of the Lord were followed concerning that place. Arriving there and the Lord not yet having made known why he had given directions to go to that place, while walking down the street he put this prayer in my heart, “Oh Lord stretch forth thy hand to heal.” Not knowing of any over there who was sick, yet the Lord directed to a house where two sisters were sorely afflicted, one of whom was in a critical condition and was beyond earthly help, awaiting the summons of the Lord, or to receive a touch from his healing hand. After a prolonged season of prayer and communion with the Lord she was anointed according to James 5:14, 15. And the prayer of faith prevailed, and both of them walked the floor praising God for his wonderful healing power. To him be all the praise.

Roane, Tex., July 9, 1894.

Dear Saints Everywhere: God bless each and every one with complete victory in your soul. Amen. We are glad to report once more that we are saved and kept by the power of God. Praise our God! The work in these parts is advancing for the Lord. The first meeting we held in Navarro Co. was at Bro. C. Tramel’s house. We were refused the scholl house on the feigned reason that we had no credentials, but really because they had heard the truth some time before and did not want it preached again. Bro. Joe Norman and I carried on the meeting in Jesus’ name, for over a week, when we were reinforced by Bro’s Slate and Brake and families. We then moved to Bro. Womack’s, and while there several souls were saved, some were sanctified, and four children of God buried in baptism; and the Lord’s name was glorified on earth. Then Bro. Lon Slate and myself with two other saints went about twelve miles from there and commenced meeting in the new Methodist house. One dear soul was saved, and others love the truth, and we trust will soon get the experience the truth teaches. While we were holding this meeting. Bro. Joe Norman and Bro. Brake & Co. started a meeting at Marvin Chapel, about four miles from Bro. Tramel’s. In this meeting one dear soul was saved and the truth seemed to be accepted by a good many. We closed meeting and worked with our hands for a while, and then commenced another meeting in Jesus’ name at Marvin. During this meeting two souls were saved, and one baptized. Hallelujah to Jesus! Some accepted the truth, others did not. God bless and keep the little ones true, and save the unsaved there is my prayer. We believe God could use some more advanced workers in this country in establishing the saints. From here we go south to Conroe, to hold up Jesus. Now dear ones remember us in prayer before God, that he may fully equip us with all the love, humility and faith and gifts that we need in God’s work. When I realize the responsibility that rests on us, I am made to cry out, Oh Lord sink us deeper and deeper in the sweet will of God. Bro. Brake & Co. are Richardson, Dallas Co., and we received word from them telling us of the death of his oldest son, Eddie S. Brake. God bless the bereaved parents and friends. Bro. Lon Slate expects, the Lord willing, to go soon to Henderson Co. to work for souls. Our address is Conroe, Montgomery Co., Tex. Your brethren saved and in the one body.

while they are yet small children? Many times older ones have no idea how God’s Spirit impresses young minds. And it seems to be natural for a little child to believe God. They do not know how to doubt him like older people.

Now parents, just look at. the responsibility that God has put upon you in behalf of your children’s eternal welfare. Oh for Jesus’ sake train your children for God. First get filled with the Spirit of God yourselves, then teach your children the good and the right way. Bring them to Jesus in your prayers and trust them with the Lord, and you have got the promise. “But thus saith the Lord, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered. For I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will SAVE THY CHILDREN.” Oh what a precious promise! How full of consolation! Now parents, grasp it by faith; take it as yours, and hold right on to God for the fulfillment of the same; wrestle like Jacob, and don’t let go of his precious promises till be saves your children. Do you realize what it means for your children to be eternally lost, even if you are saved? Did you ever consider it as you should? God help you to see both your privilege and duty on that line, and do what you can while you can. Oh let it be said of each of you, dear fathers and mothers, that you have done what you could. And may all of us as God’s dear children, do all we can for perishing souls around us, and by so doing hasten the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Your sister under the blood, at the feet of Jesus, striving together with you for the faith of the gospel.

Mary Cole.

__________

SANCTIFICATION.

_____

(Continued from last issue.)

SUBTRACTION OF SANCTIFICATION.

Sanctification is an addition to our Christian experience; but the preparatory process to this blessed experience is necessarily a subtraction, and to such an extent as to imply the loss of all things. Instead of being filled with the Spirit there must first be a thorough emptying of every thing. An entire abandonment of all this world and self, as will be seen by the following scriptures.

Crucifixion. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. — Gal. 5:24. But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me and I unto the world. — Gal. 6:14. I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me, and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me. — Gal. 2:20. Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. — Rom. 6:6.

Mortification. For if ye live after the flesh ye shall die, but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body ye shall live. — Rom. 8:13. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth, fornication, uncleanness, inordinate Affection, evil concupiscence and covetousness, which is idolatry. — Col. 3:5.

Destruction. Know this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, etc. — Rom. 6:6. Lord, thou wilt ordain peace for us, for thou also hast wrought all our works in us. O Lord our God, other lords beside thee have had dominion over us, but by thee only will we make mention of thy name. They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish. — Isa. 26:12-14.

Rooted up. But he answered and said, Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up. — Mat. 15:13.

Put off. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: in whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ. — Col. 2:10, 11. But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds.— Col. 3:8, 9. That ye put off concerning the former conversation, the old man which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts. — Eph. 4:22.

Put away. For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world, but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. — Heb. 9:26.

Free from Sin. Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son, therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. — Jno. 8:34-36. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. But now being made free from sin and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. — Rom. 6:18, 22. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. — Rom. 8:2. This subtraction implies

Purity and Cleansing. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. — Mat. 5:8. Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing, go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord. Isa. 52:11. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself even as he is pure. — Jno. 3:3. Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, etc. — 1 Tim. 1:5. Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. — 1 Tim. 3:9. Let no man despise thy youth, but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. — 1 Tim. 4:12. Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure. — 1 Tim. 5:22. Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. — 2 Tim. 2:22. And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness. — Mal. 3:3. And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. — Acts 15:9.

HOW TO BECOME SANCTIFIED.

We must first be sure that we are freely justified, having perfect peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. No one is a proper candidate for sanctification who has the slightest consciousness of present guilt. The experience of pardon in any time past does not insure a present justification. Just now you must know that you are living in perfect obedience to God in all the light he has given, and you stand approved in his sight. You must also fully comprehend your need of the inward cleansing, and the simple conditions to obtain it. The doctrine is often reproached by individuals who feel a great need of a better experience, but instead of being in a justified state which is the first and requisite need, they endeavor to consecrate for sanctification. They think they have met the conditions and claim the experience. They go on with this profession but their fruits at once show that they are professing what they do not possess. The mistake is such cases is, they were not justified before they made the attempt to consecrate for sanctification, and the need they felt was justification.

Another class of unjustified people hear the doctrine of sanctification and are favorably impressed with its benefits, and come to the altar for it. When the Holy Spirit convicts them they repent instead of consecrate, and receive the blessing of pardon, but they call this the experience of sanctification. Soon they discover the existence of carnality in their hearts and manifest it in their lives. They soon become discouraged and Satan tells them there is no such experience to be attained as holiness, or else on the other hand some may go on professing it without the possession.

Another class see the need of a clean heart, and may be in possession of justification, but when they see what an absolute consecration means, they become unwilling to make it. They may hesitate for some time, but God holds them to obedience. They finally make a consecration, but not a complete one, thus grieving the Holy Spirit. By their withholding they forfeit their justification, but will even dare to profess sanctification and thus reproach the doctrine.

Still another class consists of young converts who hear the teaching of sanctification but do not yet fully comprehend their individual need of it. They are frequently urged by zealous teachers to consecrate for a clean heart. They at once consent and make the attempt to consecrate without understanding what a perfect consecration is. They claim the experience, but soon wake up to the fact that they do not possess it. Many people accept the doctrine theoretically, but are far from the possession of it. No one should consecrate for the experience until they understand the meaning of an absolute consecration. The Holy Spirit will illuminate the heart and mind of every honest justified person through the agency of the word of God and the ministry of his people.

CONSECRATION,

Consecrate. To cause a separation; to set apart, to dedicate, Consecrated. A thing devoted to God; separated; hallowed. This implies much more than the sinner is able to comprehend when he comes to God for pardon. Therefore no sinner can make a scriptural consecration. All that the sinner can do is to forsake his way, and thus with a penitent heart surrender himself to God. This brings him to the place where he can believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and receive pardon. All sinful things have been forsaken and he now finds himself in a new spiritual life. He rejoices in this heavenly peace with unspeakable joy. He delights to obey God, but sooner or later finds within him an opposing element that tends to hinder him in his purposes. By much watching and prayer he keeps it within bounds, but like a running vine it continually reaches out its tendrils to fasten itself to this object or that, dividing the affections of the heart between God and the things of this world. This may take place at times in such a manner that the believer is wholly unconscious of the fact until he finds himself much hindered and his heart unable to perfectly respond to the mind of the Spirit. He now begins to yearn for a deeper experience. By the testimony of others, the word of God, and his own experience he finds that this inward enemy is the carnal mind. He cannot perfectly set his affections on things above because they are continually inclined toward the things of this world. He even sees the continual tendency of this inward nature to twine around the God-given blessings of earth, which often brings him into captivity, so that he cannot love God with all his heart, soul, strength and mind. He now calls upon God for assistance, and soon finds that ample provision has been made in Christ for the destruction of this inborn depravity, which he may receive through a perfect consecration of spirit, soul and body to God, and faith in the cleansing blood of Christ.

Now comes the crucifying ordeal — separation. Every affection of the heart to ward this world and all that is in it must be crucified in order that God may remove the depraved and sanctify the created propensities of our entire being. This indeed means a separation. All that has been near and dear to us, whether it be father or mother, brother or sister, companion or child, this world’s goods or reputation, all that we know or can think of at present, and all that we do not know or cannot think of for all future, is now consecrated to God. A death-bed farewell, an eternal separation from earth and dedication to God. There is no medium. Soul, body and substance are his. No creature can share with him. Nothing must be allowed to come between us and the object of our love.

The Covenant. This is the everlasting covenant promised in God’s word. And I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. — Isa. 55:3. Now the God of peace that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. — Heb. 13:20, 21.

The Sacrifice and Blood of this Covenant. All that could have been done in God’s provision in this covenant has been completed, and now he simply demands us to meet the full conditions.

God’s part. Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we being dead to sin should live unto righteousness, by whose stripes ye were healed. — 1 Pet. 2:24. Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first that he may establish the second. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. For by one offering he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified. Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us. — Heb. 10:9, 10, 14, 15. Wherefore Jesus also that he might sanctify the people with his. own blood suffered without the gate. — Heb. 13:12.

Man’s part. Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. — Heb. 13:13. Gather my saints together unto me, those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice. — Psa. 50:5. I beseech you therefore brethren by the mercies of God that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service, and be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. — Rom. 12:1, 2.

These conditions now being met we are brought into glorious fulfillment of the covenant expressed in the following scriptures: That we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of them that hate us. To perform the mercy promised to pur fathers, and to remember his holy covenant. The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, that he would grant unto us that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. — Luke 1:71-75. And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them and rose again. — 2 Cor. 5:15. Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid. What! know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one Spirit. — 1 Cor. 6:15-17. Wherefore my brethren ye also are become dead to the law, by the body of Christ, that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. — Rom. 7:4.

This brings us into the matrimonial state with Christ. We are no more our own, but his, perfectly and eternally joined through this holy covenant. He has made his sacrifice, we have made ours, and now he bestows upon us

The Seal of the Covenant. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, in whom also after that ye believed ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise. — Eph. 1:13. And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. — Eph. 4:30. Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God, who hath also scaled us and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts. — 2 Cor. 1:21, 22.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led to write my testimony. I am saved, and was baptized June 20, 1894. I am not sanctified yet but want to be. There are a few of God’s people here in this place that hold up the truth. Praise God! Oh dear ones I want you to pray that the people in this community may be roused out of sleep, and get their eyes open to the truth. It pays to live for God. May the Lord keep us faithful unto the end. I pray God to send some of his firebrands to this place to preach. Your saved sister,

Minne L. Davis.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel it my duty to write my testimony. I was saved a little over a year ago, when Brother Jacobson and company were here. Praise the Lord! My two children were saved also, and a few others. We are still trusting in Jesus to keep us saved. We have not reached the grace of entire sanctification yet. Pray for us that we may be able by the grace of God to make a full consecration and obtain full salvation. This is a very wicked place, and much room for reformation. May the Lord continue to thunder his word to them through his true ministers. Yours in the love and fellowship of the Spirit.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel ed of God to day to write my testimony. I praise the good Lord for his keeping power. I praise the Lord that I am free from all sects, and for his marvelous light, and for bringing me out of sin and setting my feet on the rock of Christ Jesus. I used to be a great slave to coffee drinking. One year ago this last February the Lord plainly showed me that I had to quit it, by bringing me down on my bed of afflictions. My suffering was very great, I kept asking for relief but got no relief. I asked the Lord what was in the way he plainly showed me it was coffee. Every time I would ask, coffee would ring in my ears. As I was getting very weak and my breath getting short, I knew my time was not long on this earth. The Lord answered my prayer and I told him I would quit coffee. I do praise the Lord so much for his precious healing power. We have been trusting the Lord for the last two years. Your humble sister, saved and sanctified by the blood of Jesus,

Juda Bunch.

Dear Saints of God: May the peace that comes from God be with you. I thank the Lord for this blessed privilege I have of testifying to God’s saving power, and being free in my soul. While I was at work I began thinking, how can I keep free in Christ? Then the chorus of No. 198 in Echoes, came to me, “Gently buried with my Savior, let me sink beneath the wave; crucified to earth forever, hence alone to God I live.” What! crucified forever? then it is not for a few weeks, and then go backward, but dead forever. Oh I just realize what that means. Well, how is a person to keep dead to the world? I have heard so many say, “I consecrated my all on the altar and I keep it there,” but I have never heard them say how they keep it there. I realize it is by keeping my mind on Christ; and when we have our mind on Christ the devil has to move. Glory to God for his unspeakable gift! God help all the weak ones to cast all your care upon him, for he careth for you. 1 Pet. 5:7. I praise the dear Lord for the privilege of going to camp meeting. I am strengthened in him. Pray for me that God will keep me humble and where he can use me. Your brother in Christ.

Dear Children of God: I want to testify through the Trumpet, to the glory of God, that I am saved and sanctified, and kept by the power of God. I am out on the Bible line for God to work for the salvation of precious souls. It brings sweet peace to my soul to do God’s will in all things. His yoke is easy and his burden is light. His grace is sufficient; and this is the victory that over-cometh the world, even our faith. Now I will admonish all in the name of Jesus, keep close to the Lord, in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge; for in him dwelleth all the fulness of the godhead bodily. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. We are commanded to run the race with patience. No matter where the Lord has placed us in the body, he expects us to run in the race. May the dear Lord help all the dear ones to redouble their diligence in the service of our Master, and trust him for our all sufficiency in all things. For God can make us abound in every good word and work. I am determined by the grace of God to go through on the Bible line, though God requires me to leave our home and our dear loved ones whom we always loved and cherished. I earnestly request the prayers of all God’s children, that I may fill my place in the body of Christ. Yours in the gospel,

Geo. Dansberger.

Dear Saints of the Living God: believe it would be to the glory of God to tell the dear saints how God has led a faithful few in this place, and of the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free. About eight years ago some holiness evangelists came here preaching salvation from all sin. Myself with several others saw our lost and undone condition, sought and obtained forgiveness from our sins. Shortly after was led into the experience of sanctification. We afterwards joined the M. E. sect, but the confusion it caused drove a few of us together, to searching our bibles and praying diligently to know God’s will toward us. After waiting on the Lord patiently for some time, He showed us the evil of sectism. It almost staggered us at first, having never been taught any thing of the kind before, and not until he had showed us individually, did we act upon what we almost felt were false convictions. But as the light came more clearly to us, we obediently left sectism knowing, it was the blessed Lord that was calling us to the seperation. Since then we have had a freedom that no one knows until they are free indeed. Hallelujah! Seeing Jesus as our head, his body as the church, and having a yoke of love that binds us more closely together than family ties ever can. Praise His dear name! Governed by the word, the spirit, the life of Jesus, with a conscience wrought according to his word and not some tradition, we have heard all our lives. Realizing nothing but sin can ever separate us from this blessed relatiosnhip, let them call us church tramps, come offers, any thing. But to have His divine approval and his presence (for his presence is salvation — margin — Psa 42:5) is worth more than all else resides, “I reckon that the suffering of the present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which is to be revealed in us.” Your brother in the one body,

A. W. Blackmer.
