Evening Light.

_____

How blest the time of evening light,
The glorious setting of the sun!
All earth seems now sublime and bright,
And day’s hard toil is nearly done.

The burning sun its strength doth loose,
All cool and grand the evening seems!
While nature, in her brightest hues
And gayest tints, her blessings streams.

The housewife gazing in the West,
Admiring heaven’s gorgeous ‘ray,
Thinks of the one whom she loves best,
And blesses God for close of day.

Her husband from his daily care,
Turns homeward to his evening meal;
Refreshened, he returns, and there
Completes his work with heightened zeal.

Oh evening time! Blest he the Lord!
My son I breaks forth in pure delight,
That God has spoken through his word,
Of holy Gospel Evening Light.

The Christian on his journey bright,
Rejoices in the Cod of love,
That he is in the Evening Light,
And earth and sin he reigns above.

Just as the wife, the church of God,
Arrayed in linen clean and white,
Receives the glorious cleansing flood,
Of soul-refreshing Evening Light.

The Bridegroom, Christ, now at the close
Of God’s great dispensation day,
To gather his elect he goes,
To spread his gospel every way.

His saints his burning truths to tell,
Go over mount and ocean wave
To rescue precious souls from hell,
And speak of light which Jesus gave.

Behold the hand so pure and free!
One grand new song to God they raise,
That through the light of heav’n they see
The world’s Redeemer, whom they praise.

Oh who will go ere time shall cease.
And freedom preach from sin and sect?
That God’s true light may still increase
To gather in his blest elect.

__________

“LEARN OF ME.”

_____

So says the Teacher that came from heaven. “Hear ye him,” saith the Father. “They shall all be taught of God.” O that every child of God, would truly cast away the creeds of the dark ages, cast down imaginations, and be taught only by the word and Spirit of God. Above all things do not go to the creeds of Babylon for the truth. A brother writing on the church in the TRUMPET of Aug. 31, answers the question, What is the church? as follows: “A given number of Christians associated together for the worship of God, according to the scriptures.” The language is taken from J. Winebrenner’s Bible dictionary, and differs scarcely any from the definition given to the church in all the dark age creeds of confusion; but it differs very widely from the definition given to the church in the word of God. By the voice of inspiration the church is clearly defined as being the body of Christ. Eph. 1:22, 23; Col. 1:18, 24. If the qualification, “according to the scriptures,” were to be strictly observed, it would largely guard against the unsound elements in the rest of the discription. But that is very generally overlooked, and every sect readily imagines that their creed is according to the scriptures. The fact is, if the one little clause, referring to the scriptures, were omitted, the definition would exactly describe a sect and utterly miss the church of God. Though Winebrenner rose above much of the fogs of sectism, he was far from reaching the “sea of glass that is mingled with fire,” where all who have “gotten the victory over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of bis name,” now stand, in the evening light. Namely on the pure gospel basis, filled with the sanctifier, and clean escaped from all sects and sect education. Hence his definition of the church was taken from the creeds of men instead of the word of God. “A given number of Christians associated together for the worship of God,” implies that they by mutual choice, and of their own selves, associate, organize, and join themselvese together for the above object. But the church is something men cannot organize nor join. But God sets the members into the body as it pleased him, and tempers the same together by his miraculous power. The above definition leaves God out, and makes the church the result of men associating themselves together, it sees not the body of Christ, but a social compact. It also implies that men are Christians before entering the church in any locality. “A given number of Christians associated together.” As though they first became Christians, and then, by a mutual association of themselves, they became a church. That is the way sects are formed; but into the church of God men are born of the Spirit. Neither are they Christians prior to their accessions to the church. To become a Christian is to be born into the church of God, and only when thus inducted into the church is a man a Christian.

But the worst feature of the above creed definition of the church, is this, it provides for sects, and isms, as many as the devil, and foolish men may take it in their heads to invent. If “a given number of Christians, associated together for the worship of God.” constitute a church. Then twenty separate given numbers, may each associate themselves together, invent their own bond of union, formutate their own creed, and, if it be professedly to worship God, then each compact is a church, though they all be in the same town. In fact the language, “A given number,” etc., has special reference to the roll of membership in each sect. A sect is any certain number of nominal Christians joined together by their own contrived association. But the church of God is the body of Christ, not a given number of the members of the body of Christ, but the whole body of Christ. If spoken of as a whole, it includes all Christians, all the saved of God in heaven and earth. If a town, city, or locality is spoken of, the church is, not a given number, but all the members of the body of Christ in that place. Since the word of God forbids sects, forbids any given number of professed Christians forming themselves into a compact, God’s church is no such an organism, but is the entire number of believers at any one place, who have been chosen and saved out of the world, by the power of God, and baptized by one Spirit into one body. Since the church and all sectism so widely differ from each other, a definition that covers the one, will not apply to the other. And since we reject the sect principles we reject such definitions of the church that apply to human factions, and misrepresent the church.

__________

QUSTIONS.

_____

Grand Blanc, Mich., Sept. 26, 1893.

E. E. Byrum: Will you please answer the following questions through the “Trumpet?”

Fred C. Rottger.

Q.What is the difference between one who is justified and one who is sanctified?

A. A person who is justified in the sight of God, is one who has been pardoned of all actual transgressions, or sins committed, and is a child of God, and at peace with him (Rom. 5:1). One who has been born of God, and become as a little child, (Matt. 18:3) but still has the carnal mind which was inherited through the fall of man. A wholly sanctified person is one who has had the “body of this death” — the carnal mind — destroyed out of the heart, and has reached the standing grace of Rom. 5:2, having been offered, a “living sacrifice” according to Romans 12:1, 2.

Q. By what fruit may we know one to be justified; and what are the fruits of one sanctified?

A. By “fruits of righteousness.” Phil. 1:11; “Fruit unto God.” Rom. 7:4; “Fruit unto holiness.” Rom. 6:22; “Fruit unto eternal life.” Jno. 4:36; “Good fruit.” Luke 6:43, 44; Matt. 7:17. Both are to bear the same kind of fruit, but the first is to bear fruit that it may be purged and bring forth more fruit. Jno. 15:2.

Q. Is one who is justified but not sanctified fit for heaven?

A. Yes. Such a one is a state of innocency; is “as a little child;” is a child of God, without a stain of guilt upon the soul, and has an inheritance above with Jesus Christ, and has passed from death unto life. Jno. 5:24; Gal. 4:6, 7, 22, 31. The atonement covers the whole plan of salvation, and when a child of God measures up to the word of God as far as he has had the light, that is all God requires of such a one, and in such a case the atonement covers all that had not yet been reached. The spiritual birth places a person in the light, where he will soon be made to realize the presence of the inherited nature which still remains, but is not responsible for the same until the light of the word reveals the fact that it is his privilege to have it destroyed. When a person reaches this point of experience, a refusal to move forward to obtain the perfecting grace, which is entire sanctification, would be to fail to walk in the light and would bring darkness to the soul. The Word only requires a person to walk in the light received, but a failure to do so means to go into darkness. Jno. 12:35. Read 1 Jno. 1:7, 9; 3:8, 9; Rom. 14:8; Jno. 10:9; 8:51; 5:24; 17:16.

Q. Suppose we should be called away from this life before sanctification is obtained, what will be the destination?

A. Heaven. Matt. 18:3.

Q. Suppose one should neglect to seek, or refuse sanctification, will he be lost or saved?

A. “This is the will of God even your sanctification.” 1 Thess. 4:3. Those who refuse to do the will of God will be lost. Matt. 7:21. If a person willfully neglects to do his duty on this line, and will not walk in the light as the Lord reveals unto him through his word and by His Spirit, he will go into darkness and be lost. Jno. 12:35; 11:10; Heb. 2:3.

Q. How soon after one is justified may sanctification be obtained?

A. A person must first bear the fruits of justification, he is then in a condition to make the offering for entire sanctification, and receive the purging. Jno. 15:2; Rom. 12:1, 2; 1 Thess. 4:3. He must have a knowledge of the presence of the carnal mind and see the need of having it removed.

Q. Is sanctification a gradual work or intsantaneous?

A. It is instantaneous. The preparation and coming to the proper point of consecration may be gradual, but when the conditions are fully met the work is instantly done. 1 Jno. 5:15. For instance, a person may come gradually up to the entrance of a room, then one step will take him instantly into the room, where he may roam around, or make a gradual approach to the door of the next room where another step will take him across the threshold from that room into the next. We must get INTO grace before we can grow in it.

Q. If the latter; then what is the sign by which we ourselves may know the moment it is obtained?

A. When we know that we have fully met the conditions of the Wore on our part, both in making the consecration and believing, the spirit of God witnesseth the same. Heb. 10:15.

Q. Has one who is sanctified all knowledge of right or wrong?

A.Sanctification does not make a person infallible nor infinite, but gives them knowledge of right and wrong to such an extent as to enable them to live free from sin and keep fully saved at all times if they will. And the apostle gives the admonition to “grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” 2 Pet. 3:18.

Q. Has a sanctified person a perfect understanding of all scriptures?

A. No. If that were the case they would have little use for teachers and preachers. Even preachers are also admonished to study to show themselves approved. Such a person may be enabled to understand all scripture relative to his salvation, and the sanctifier (Rom. 15:16) which is the Holy Ghost, having taken up his abode in the soul is the interpreter, and such a person who will study the Word, having access to the great Fountain of knowledge and truth, and will keep up a proper communion with the Lord, will not only “add knowledge (1 Pet. 1:5), and wisdom to his understanding of the precious Word, but will be made to “grow in grace and a knowledge” of the truth, and will abound in the riches of his glory.

HEALED OF THE LORD.

_____

Granby, Mo., Sept. 22, 1893.

Dear Saints of the Most High God, Greeting: I thank God for his wonderful salvation that frees me from all sin, even dispeptic spirituality that a brother mentions in his letter. I am not only freed from sin but I am healed from all my old chronic ailments. Praise the Lord forever and ever! At the Granby camp meeting it was revealed to me that if I would be anointed that I could be healed, so I made the request for the elders of the church to anoint and pray for my healing, and when they laid their hands upon me I felt the healing power go all through my body, and glory be to Jesus, I have been healed from that very moment. I have not been so well physically for a number of years, and my spiritual strength was then renewed, and my faith in God took deeper hold, and to day I enjoy the fulness of God’s perfect love. Glory hallelujah! Before the Granby camp meeting I thought I could not exist without medicine. But now, praise God, I do not want any medicine of any kind. I do not need any kind of worldly medicine; king Jesus is my Physician and his prescription is a certain cure.

“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.” I ask an interest in your prayers that I may be kept humble and trustful, always abounding in good works.

__________

THAT YE PARTAKE NOT OF HER PLAGUES.

_____

THE voice of God to all his true children is, “Come out from among them, — that is, such as have a name to live and are dead — and be ye separate.” To be separate, is not to mingle with Babylon meetings and worship with them. Yea, “Come out of her my people, that ye partake not of her sins and receive not of her plagues.” Here is a solemn warning. God is pouring out his plagues upon fallen Babylon, and if we go there, without being specially sent of God, her plagues may fall upon you. we have just received a letter from which we make the following extract: “He said he was out of the sect, but he worshipped among them Thursday night. The M. E. preacher was going to be absent, and he asked —— to lead the meeting. He did so, read the scriptures, then called on an ungodly, drinking man to pray; and fell on the floor and was paralyzed and never revived again, and only lived to the next night.” Now we cannot say for certain that that fatal stroke fell upon that man and removed him out of the world because he went there and by his actions, endorsed Babylon, and justified the ungodly hypocrite, by calling on him to pray. But one thing we can say, it is safe to obey God, and be separate from all sect confusion. “He that condemneth the righteous, and he that justifieth the ungodly are alike, and are an abomination unto the Lord.” To go to a sect meeting, where even devils and every unclean spirit have their habitation, and treat them as Christians, is to justify the ungodly, and this is an abomination unto the Lord.

THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL.

Post Oak Springs, Tenn.

I was converted seventeen years ago, lived a justified life the best I could, at least I lived up to the light I had. Praise the Lord! Five years ago God sent a holiness preacher here to preach. Under his preaching the light came. Conviction seized hold on me. I gave up my tobacco and pipe and went to the Lord for a clean heart and by complete consecration to God, and trusting faith in Jesus, I received a clean heart. Five years have past the same power is now in my soul. I am saved, justified and sanctified up to date.

Hallelujah to my God.

Dear Saints of God: I praise God for his wonderful goodness to me, his keeping power, saving grace ,and precious promises. I do trust God for all things. Though persecutions are many and my name be cast out as evil I do praise God for these precious words; “If God be for us who can be against us? I know at this very moment, God is with me each day and hour. Though far away from those I love so dear yet we can be together in spirit. Praise God! the way is clear, the word of God is my guide and I ever expect to lean upon the promises that God has left for me.

Poplar Bluff, Mo,

Dear Saints in God. With a joy this world knows not of I write a few words of testimony this day. Praise the Lord for ever, he saves and sanctifies me wholly. It is but a short time since I started in this way, but I know it is a glorious way. While at the Poplar Bluff C. M. conducted by Bro’s Stanbery and Haynes, God manifested his wonderful power to me by healing my little girl of a pleurisy pain and a chronic disease she had had over one year. I had tried traveling and doctors to no avail but God healed her instantly. The same night he pardoned my sins and the next, I made a complete surrender of every thing and received that peace that floweth like a river. I am in the way of holiness and God keeps me there. His blood does indeed make and keep me whiter than snow. I want the prayers of all of God’s children. For I am among Babylon as it were and have many temptations. Your sister, saved and sanctified through the precious blood of Jesus.

QUESTIONS.

_____

  1. Is it right to baptize persons living in adultery?
  2. If a person has been baptized and falls away from grace, when he gets back must he be baptized again? Your brother,

R. H. Owens.

ANS. TO 1ST. If a person is really and knowingly living in adultery, such person is a sinner, and no sinner is fit to be baptized. But if the circumstances are such that God does not condemn the man, and by his fruits you know him to be a Christian, being owned of God he should not be rejected by us.

ANS. TO 2D. If a person is simply overthrown of Satan, but never gives up Christ to live in sin, such need not be re-baptized. But if they cast away all faith and profession and go back to live in sin, they undo their baptism and everything, and on being restored should do their first works, and be baptized.

CHILDREN’S HOME.

_____

Grand Junction, Mich.

Dearly Beloved Saints, Greeting: We are praising God for victory over all sin and for the glory in my soul through Jesus who died for me and you. Praise his dear name! Many are anxious to know how the Lord is dealing with us here. The Lord is pleased with the work and is blessing it. We have now sixteen children in our home, besides others who are here for a benefit of the home and for the home, which makes a family of about twenty-five to thirty. The Lord is graciously providing for our wants, and we feel grateful in our hearts to the Lord for what he is doing. And we ask the saints to accept our thanks for the assistance sent us in way of money and provisions. God bless you all for Jesus’ sake. Amen!

Many are writing to us to know whether there is room for their children. The little school house is full and there are more than can be comfortably seated. We began to pray the Lord what to do. We are moved, we feel of the Lord, to build a new louse, which we have already begun, and the Lord willing will be ready for school in four weeks.

Those who have looked for me to hold meetings in their neighborhood this fall will have to wait until the Lord gets through with me here, or else pray the Lord to send some one else.

Yours in the love of Jesus, sanctified and contented with my lot for Jesus’ sake.

__________

CONCERNING JUDAS.

_____

The subject concerning Judas Iscariot (one of the twelve apostles chosen by our Lord), whether or not he was ever saved, or possessed eternal life, is one we feel it our duty to speak of through the TRUMPET. There has been some variance on the above subject. I formerly held the idea that Judas never had salvation, and so presented it before a congregation but not until the opposite idea was held forth, which made it an unwise move on my part to present my side of the question. But I did it honestly, supposing that all would be enabled to understand it so, and that those who opposed it would finally be brought to believe that Judas was never saved, for I surely thought that was Bible truth. But the immediate difference that it caused, I keenly felt, and have suffered much on account of it. Being honest through it all, I did not know what I could do to mend the matter, and it did not affect my experience of salvation in any way, — only the sad difference would remain.

A few days ago, after fasting and prayer, in the presence of three in whom I placed perfect confidence, doubting not that they had the Holy Spirit, I asked for advice as to what I should do, promising to follow the same. One of the brethren told me his experience of how he in times past held ideas which he supposed to be correct, but when found to differ with those more experienced, took sides against himself, and afterwards was enabled to see his previous error. I was advised to do the same, and did so; that is, I dropped the idea that Judas was never saved, and determined to believe that he was, because others who are children of God and have the Holy Spirit, understand the scriptures to teach that he was. Right here I saw an important point and learned a good lesson, — that of simply submitting to those older and more experienced, which is also according to the Word. Notice the following scriptures. Eph. 5:21. Phil. 2:1-4. Heb. 13:7, 17. 1 Pet. 5:5. I should have known this before, but was unwisely taking a stand too independently of others, and I ask their forgiveness. I know not why God did not show me differently, unless it was to teach me the above lesson in the above mentioned way, after considerable suffering on account of the result of the same.

Now it is a fact that God’s people are all of one mind. If there is any difference whatever on any point of scripture, it will be clear to all as soon as the Holy Spirit is allowed to be the sole teacher. Let us all be filled with the real Spirit of God, and the result will be, we will all be one. Thank God for the oneness! Jesus prayed for this. John 17:20, 21.

Oh the evils of division! To bring in division has been the devil’s plan to destroy God’s church, but has failed. Praise God! So let us beware how we differ one with another, have learned a lesson which I ever mean to profit by. By obedience to the Word, we are made to be of one mind.

I mean by this confession that the stand I took was an erroneous one, and that I believe Judas to have been in a saved condition at one time. The blood of Jesus saves and sanctifies me wholly,

Dear Saints, Greeting: May God bless and keep you all. I am glad that I can say from the depths of my heart that I am saved and sanctified to the whole will of God. I will say that the meeting at Spencer School House near Sand Point closed Sunday night, with three consecrations the last night, fifteen in all. We staid there one week. Six dear souls were buried with Christ in baptism. We also had a grand and glorious ordinance meeting in which twenty-four took part in feet washing, while the saints were made to rejoice and the unsaved were made to mourn. Satan is doing his best. He has his agents at work here, but God has some holy fire brands that know no defeat. We will go from here to Oak Grove School House to begin meeting. We are sanctified just now. Our address will be Winslow, Ark.

Dearly Beloved Saints of God, Greeting: We are glad to report with complete victory in our souls over all the powers of darkness, sin and Satan. Amen. The St. Petersburg meeting is still on the move with Jesus at the head, and conviction is upon the people. Large congregations attend; Thus far two have consecrated their all to God. Others when invited to come to Christ, will weep, but. will not yield to him that bought them with his own precious blood. Lord willing we expect to labor a few weeks more in these parts; then go to Mc Callens’ Corners, Erie Co., and open the truth there, commencing evening of Nov. 7, to continue as long as the Lord wills, and from there to our home in Indiana. Lord willing we will stop off a few days with the little ones at Beaver Dam. Pray for us. Yours under the blood,

Dear Trumpet Readers: God bless you all is my prayer. We are saved to-day and have the victory over the devil in the name of the Lord. The meeting at Kalamazoo was a glorious success. God met with us in mighty power, and some saw that this is the right way. Praise the Lord for the few honest souls in this city. I pray that the Lord will help them to get clear out of sectism for their souls’ sake. From Kalamazoo we came to Mt. Pisgah where we held meeting two weeks in a school house with good attention, and the house was full about every night. God blessed in the preaching of his word, and the people said it was the truth, and they could not find any fault with it. This is the first time the evening light was ever preached at that place. From here we expect to go eight miles north-west of LaGrange. We ask the dear saints to pray for us and the success of this meeting.

Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: May the Lord bless you all for Jesus’ sake is my prayer. Amen. This morning I am still praising God for salvation and victory over all the powers of hell and for the sweet peace that is flowing in my soul all the time. Praise his holy name! This morning I would like to say, that the dear Lord has not opened up the way for me yet to go to the foreign field, but believe that whenever his time comes to send me there he will open the way and I am only sweetly resting in him. And now I would like to say to those brethren that spoke to me about having German meeting at the Hollenberg camp meeting, if they will write to me, I will come as soon as the Lord wills. Or anyone else that wants to

Dear Saints of God, Greeting: Grace, peace and mercy be multiplied unto you. We are sweetly saved and trusting the Lord for all things. We can report victory on the Lord’s side. Praise his dear name! God is wonderfully keeping us both soul and body. God has led us here to labor for the salvation of souls. We expect to labor in Denver this winter, as it is bad to travel with a family in the winter time. The Lord has blessed us in providing us a house, and furnished the things we needed. Praise his dear name! We feel it to the glory of God to do a great deal of visiting from house to house in this city. We expect to set up the tabernacle and begin another meeting in north Denver, to begin tomorrow evening, Lord willing. Brother and Sister E. G. Masters is with us.

To the Saints of God: This morning I am enjoying salvation. Praise God! We came to this place on the night of the 13th, found the saints engaged in prayer meeting in the little new church on the top of Boston Mountain. We began meeting in the name of Jesus and truly the Lord has done great a work here in saving souls and straightening up crooked professors, yet there are some that will not straighten up. In all there were thirty-seven professions to salvation in two weeks. Some received two experiences. Some came out of the Good Way delusion, were saved and sanctified and followed Christ in all the ordinances. Twenty- one were buried with Christ in baptism. Some others will follow soon. We had a precious ordinance meeting. Thirty-seven took part in washing each other’s feet. All the saints were not present on account of rainfall. Truly, “The mountain of the Lord’s house is established in the top of the mountain.” here on top of Boston Mountain. The church at this place is in a prosperous condition. May God bless the saints here with their leader, dear Bro. C. C. Lane. We go from here to Spencer school house to begin meeting in the name of Jesus. Pray for us.

To the Saints of God, Greeting: While we have not lately written to the TRUMPET, the Lord has been blessing in a wondrous way. A goodly number have been added to the church of the living God, and believers sanctified. To God be all the glory. Have just closed a very precious meeting at Pineville, Mo. It was a hard battle, but the Lord gave the victory. Nineteen professed either pardon or sanctification, some of them cleansed from tobacco and snuff dipping, whilst others made their escape from Babylon, coming out clear in the beautiful light of God. The last Sabbath was a day that will long be remembered in the little village. Two old sisters, one somewhere in seventy, and the other seventy-five years of age come to the altar for sanctification. A shower of heavenly blessings fell upon them and they gave God praise. In the afternoon we went to the water and Bro. Harmon attended to the ordinance of baptism. At night we partook of the Lord’s supper and feet washing. It was the first time for some (though advanced in years) that they ever had the privilege of participating in the last named ordinance. One dear sister said she had been waiting for twenty years to see this, and had always believed it was right. Thus God’s children have been deprived of this ordinance which brings such a blessing to the soul. Labor in the Lord is not in vain, and where the word is preached in its purity, it has its designed effect. A few workers came in and helped us and did good service for the Lord. In bidding farewell to the saints we commended them to God who is able to keep them from falling, and to present them faultless before the throne. Also left many warm friends. Some who are seekers for the salvation of Jesus. We are now engaged in another meeting three miles east of Indian Springs, Mo., which will probably be the last tent meeting we will hold this season, as the nights are getting quite cool. Pray for us.

Yours for the truth,

Dear Saints: We came from Akron and stopped at this place and felt that we could not hurry away from here. We have been here ten days and the Lord has saved ten souls. There are many calls. Bro. Stover is holding meeting about twelve miles from here. God is blessing his labors and souls are being saved, in our last report I did not speak about Bro. Caldwell of Arkansas City. He was ordained to the work and is ready to go where the Lord leads.

I would say to all the saints that this year has been the most trying period of all my life. Also I have made some mistakes, which I have no one to blame for but myself. They were not done with any wrong intention, but God was displeased and he let me. know it. Some of the brethren with keen discernment saw my trouble, and they talked to me about it, and if they had not dealt faithfully with me I do not know but I would be suffering yet. So I do heartily thank them for the admonition. Oh I am so happy; tongue cannot express. I would like to tell it all, what I have passed through this summer, and how God has made all things work together for my good.

Brethren in the ministry, is your experience as good as it was once? In your silent hours do you wonder that if God has such power, why he doesn’t impart more of it to you? When you get down to pray for sinners does God melt your hearts? Oh I appeal to your honest hearts, examine yourselves through and through. This year of severe trial has done me more good than years of past experience. Oh such glory fills my soul! David, the Psalmist, said he was in distress and the Lord enlarged him and let him in a large room. Now I have just told you in few words, and I would like if there was room in the columns of the TRUMPET to publish what I passed through in the last year. But will just say that what I have passed through has been for my perfection. Your brother fully saved and sanctified,

James Willis.

Dear Saints of God: I have been reading the Gospel Trumpets for nearly a year, and they have done me more good than anything I have ever read yet. I am aged fifteen years and two months; I am not sanctified yet but want to be. I have a praying father and mother, one brother and two sisters, but I have a wicked husband. O, I pray to God to show him the light and happiness of salvation. I get the Gospel Trumpet and read it to him, and pray for him, but oh, I am afraid the devil has too great a hold on him. I was converted when I was ten years old, and thank God I have not strayed out of that good road yet. I want all the saints of God to pray for me that I may receive what I am looking after, that is sanctification, and pray for my husband.

Dear Brethren and Sisters in Christ: To night I am impressed to write and tell what the Lord has done for me. I was professing to be sanctified wholly and God showed me that I was not; showed me that my justified life was not as perfect as it should have been when I made a consecration before. I praise God that he did give me a willing heart to obey him. I presented my body a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto the Lord last month; and now he saves and sanctifies me wholly to do his will. He says, every branch that beareth fruit he purgeth that it may bring forth more fruit, and I know I had borne fruit for God. I am now praising God for complete victory over the devil; although he brings up trials and accusations, God says “he is a liar.” God has destroyed the works of the devil in my heart. Pray for me that I may obey God at all times rather than man. I am your sister in Christ,

Dear Editor of the Gospel Trumpet. God miraculously sent me one of your grand papers last eve and it indeed has been food for my soul. It was what my heart was longing for. I have always thought there was a place that we could attain to where Christ would be our all and in all. But have always been where it was not taught. About two months ago I came to Dodge City, and there is a band of holiness teachers here that got me to know that I was not right, or rather that I could test more fully God’s love. So I went to praying for God to lead and two weeks ago today, God came and slew me. I was at home with my little children, Oh how I did plead for my soul! I got all on the altar, and oh what a blessing. And to day I am free, praise God. I have full salvation. I am perfectly simple in my self, but bless God! I have the anointing, and Christ is my teacher, and oh how sweetly he does lead me! I wish some of you people could come here and preach the word in its purity. From your sister,

May the God of all grace richly bless you and all the dear saints. I have long felt like writing my testimony for the TRUMPET, but have not done so because I have not much education and have always been afraid it would not be fit to print, but I want to make use of the talents I have to the glory of God. I am all the Lord’s, trusting in Jesus for all things. The Lord has wonderfully delivered me from sin. I have read the GOSPEL TRUMPET over a year. The time was, when I was afraid of it like a great many are now. I used to get it out of my way as soon as I could but I love to read it now. I was a sectarian once, but the Lord has saved me and made me free. I have passed through fiery trials for the last two years, but the grace of God has been sufficient for me. Praise God for the Bible! In it we find what God has in store for us. O hallelujah: my heart is burning within me while I write. Though we are persecuted and our names cast out as evil, and this way is evil spoken of among all sects, yet God blesses us. We are praying the Lord to send some Holy Ghost baptized saints to this place. We need reinforcements. The battle is hot. Our sister has left her sect, and her children and friends all turned against her except one. There are 14 or 15 different denominations in this town and those we thought the nearest right, oppose us the most.

Dear Saints in Christ: Something more than a year has now passed since the Lord led me into the blessed evening light, and I feel that through my testimony, I would like to give God the glory for all that he has done for me during this time. Truly I can say it has been to me the very crowning year of all my life. The dear Lord has so deepened my Christian experience, and matured the gleanings of the past year, that I have very wonderfully felt the growth in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be all the glory, for it is nothing of myself, but it has all come through the goodness of God. And O that I could praise him and glorify his name as my soul longeth to do! But words come so far short of expressing my gratitude. But I have so much to praise him for, because he has wonderfully manifested himself unto me, and he has saved and sanctified my soul, and keeps me reigning above all the powers of darkness. Oh the peace of God just flows in my soul in such heavenly sweetness that my happy heart yearns to reach out and to share it with every one, that they may know the boundless love of God, and become partakers of the riches of his glory through Christ Jesus. Truly it means something in these last days to be loyal to Christ, to be rooted and grounded in the full assurance of faith that none of the things of the world, nor cunning devices of Satan move us from a determined purpose to serve God at any cost. And another cause for gratitude to him, is the many rich lessons which he has taught me more perfectly. Never has he failed me or left me to be confounded or ashamed. O glory be to his name forever and ever! He has also been our physician for nearly three years. Dear saints, how truly beautiful the Christ life, and how much there is to live for! I am not often privileged to meet with many of God’s dear children, but I do love those who belong to the household of faith, and I ask your earnest prayers that I may live and walk worthy of his love. Yours in him,

Nina Smith.

Dear Readers of the Trumpet: For the first time since being saved in the evening light will write my testimony. At the time of hearing the full counsel of God I was a professing Christian in the Quaker faith, but praise God, I now have the faith of Christ. Oh how ignorant I was of the plan of salvation! but I thank God that his sheep hear his sheep hear his voice and a stranger they will not follow. I find that God is able to keep that which we have intrusted to his care. I have been saved now nearly four years and have always found his grace sufficient. All glory be to the Captain of our salvation! Besides saving my soul and sanctifying my nature he has cleansed me from all filthiness of the flesh in the use of tobacco, tea and coffee, which I found after being set free, were agents of the devil to destroy my body as well as my soul. Bless God, he delivered me from all of these and more, and I am growing in

the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Your brother in Christ,

WITNESSES.

_____

IN Hebrews 12:1, we read, Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.

A witness is one who bears testimony, and if a true witness, testifies to positive facts. In 1 Thess. 2:5, Paul calls God to witness that he had taught them only the pure Gospel. Again in Rom. 1:9 he calls God to witness to his testimony. But when we call God to witness to our testimony, we want to know that we are stating facts. Remembering Annanias and Saphira Acts 5:1-11. The cloud of witnesses in Heb. 12:1, is the company of those, who testify to to what they know. In Jno. 3:11, Jesus said to Nicodemus. We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen. In 1 Jno. 1:1, 3, That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and our hands have handled, of the Word of life, that which we have seen and heard, declare we unto you.

But what do they testify to? In Luke 24:48, Jesus said to his disciples; And ye are witnesses of these things. What things? Verse 47 tells us: that through repentance they received remission of sins. Not hoped to, but actually had received the pardon of their sins. These witnessed to the new birth [regeneration] which made them new creatures in Christ. 2 Cor. 5:17. Old things are passed away and behold all things are become new. Again in Acts 1:8, we read, but ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost has come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Again we ask, witness to what? We read in Acts 2:1-4. And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place * * * and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

And Peter in his sermon immediately after declared Ver. 32, 33. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we are all witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. Now Paul says, Rom. 15:16, that the Holy Ghost is the sanctifier, and Acts 15:9, declares that it purifies the heart. Hence they testify to heart purity, entire sanctification, which made them one. Acts 4:31, 32, Eph. 4:13. Not only perfect unity among themselves, but with God. Heb. 2:11. Wherefore, says the apostle, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, etc., the word ALSO refers us to the 11th, chapter, by reference to which he directs their minds to the witnesses then existing, viz., In Acts 1:15 is mentioned one hundred and twenty who were present on the day of Pentecost, and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:1-4. And in chapter 2:41, three thousand were added and verse 47 speaks of a daily addition, and in chapter 4:4, five thousand more are mentioned who were all filled with the Holy Ghost. Verse 31. These with the many elsewhere who were saved up to the time when the Apostle wrote to the Hebrews, truly formed as great a cloud of witnesses. Hence the ALSO witnesses were the New Testament saints. Therefore the Apostle exhorts, let us lay aside every weight [actual transgressions] and the sin, not sins, but the sin [inherited sin] which doth so easily beset us. Hence these witnesses testified not only to pardon of actual trangressions, but to cleansing from carnality, inbred sin. But this text comes to us with double force if possible; because we have not only the same cloud of witnesses that they had, but the testimony of millions who sealed their testimony with their blood; beside unmistakable witnesses who are now living. But when we testify to the grace of entire sanctification we want to know that we are. living a pure and holy life before God, that we may be able to bear testimony like Hezekiah of old, Isa. 38:3, lest God should say as he did to some at Philadelphia. Rev. 3:9. False witnesses make skeptics and infidels. Rom. 10:10 says, with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Now a man must be saved before he can truly testify that it is so. And to be saved we must be keeping God’s commandments; for John says, Jno. 2:4. He that saith I know him and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar and the truth is not in him. And the same inspired apostle says in Rev. 21:8, that all lairs shall have their part in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. — Matt. 7:21.

Now with this cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin, etc. But how shall we do this? Samuel says, 2 Sam. 22:33, God is my strength and power; and he maketh my way perfect. In Heb. 13:12 we read, Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. But John says Jno. 3:1-3. Every man that hath this hope in him, purifieth himself even as he is pure. Now for cleansing, like pardon we have something to do. In order to obtain pardon we must forsake our way [sin] grant a full and free pardon to every offending party, make all wrongs right as far as in our power lies, and covenant a life of obedience to God; then God promises to pardon and set us free. Not pardon first, and then cease to sin, but cease to sin first, then pardon. See Isa. 55:7. Prov. 28:13, Eze. 18:21. Jesus says, Matt. 11:28. Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. 2 Cor. 7:10 says, Godly sorrow worketh repentance unto salvation, and Luke 13:3, 5, except ye repent ye shall all likewise perish.

Repentance, then, means to quit the business of sin, straighten up your life as far as you can possibly do, and live for God alone. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. — 1 Jno. 1:9. So the laying aside of the weights and sin must be a separation from every thing that does not measure to the word of God. See Prov. 30:5. Not only separate from all iniquity. 2 Tim. 2:19, but covenant and consecrate to God soul, body, time, talent, possessions and will, forevermore to be the Lord’s without a single reserve; for service, sacrifice, or suffering. Covenant and consecrate to bear, endure, suffer meekly patiently, without a murmur or complaint. Yea though it lead to imprisonment or the burning stake. Covenant with God that whether therefore ye eat or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Cor. 10:31. Not any longer to please self but God.

Ask the question in every step we take, would we do so if Jesus stood by? This is purifying ourselves, putting it upon the altar, then comes the promise. Matt. 23:19. That the altar sanctifieth the gift. Ex. 29:37. — Whatsoever toucheth the altar shall be holy. This includes the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eye. — Jno. 2:15-17; Matt. 5:28. Now when we have made an absolute unconditional surrender of all to God, and plant ourselves firmly upon the word, then we are where we can believe according to Rom. 10:10.

Fow then we can run with patience the race that is set before us. Jesus says in Luke 8:15, But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. Even though ye shall be betrayed both by parents and brethren, and kinfolk, and friends, and some of you shall they cause to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake, but there shall not a hair of your head perish. In your patience possess ye your souls. Luke 21:16-19. Yea, even glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation worketh patience. Rom. 5:3. Jesus left us an example of patience as Paul tells us in Rom. 15:5. Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus. The margin says “after the example of,” (Christ) His examble of humility is referred to, in Acts 8:32, 33. “That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” — Rom. 15:6. Christ made himself of no reputation, — Phil. 2:7. James says, Jas. 1:2-4, My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. Running the race in Heb. 12:1 is equivolent to Peter’s addition, 2 Peter 2:4-10 and Paul’s forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded. Phil. 3:14, 15.

SO FORWARD.

_____

Mid hill and vale in Canaan’s land,
There are riches full many a store;
Come let us go forward, dear Israel band.
Why linger longer on the shore?

BUT they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imaginations of their evil heart, and went backward and not forward. Jer. 7:24. It has often been remarked that in the Christian life there is no remaining in one place, but that each day a more advanced position must be taken or else a falling back. We conclude from the above scripture that this remark is in harmony with the word of truth.

Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? Song 8. It was only a few years since that Zion on the arm of her beloved, started forth from the wilderness. “Awake, awake, put on thy strength, O Zion.” Isa. 62:1. Zion is composed of righteous people, and Job says, “The righteous also shall hold on his way, and he that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger. Chapter 17. Here we see that the inhabitants of Zion become stronger and stronger; then certainly Zion renews her strength. Thus Zion, year by year through the increase of strength of her inhabitants, is returning to the strength, and glory and power of the morning. We are persuaded that the near future years will reveal such an increase of strength that now even the strongest are scarcely able to receive. But God is leading his people on and preparing them for the power and glory which is soon to come.

’Twas only a few years ago (and perhaps yet) when God directly by his word and Spirit, here and there in various and remote parts of the land, showed people the true church. This was when she started forth from the wilderness, and ’twas indeed great light.

Now God, by his word and Spirit here and there throughout Zion, is stirring in the souls of his people a general forward move. The cry is coming up from all quarters of the land of Zion’s swift returning.

Now we are all aware that when the church of the Bible is disclosed to the people there are some, though they be spiritual, will hold to their former ways and as a result are sacrificed and become food for “unclean and hateful birds.” We wonder, that now while the Captain of our salvation is sounding an advance all along the line, if there be not some who have become so weary and exhausted that they will refuse to join in the onward move. God is moving on and if we “walk in the light of the Lord” we need not fear the enemy. It is impossible for Satan and his host to overtake Zion in her rapid march for strength. It is only those who become careless and weary, and fall far to the rear that will be taken captive. Stay in Zion and increase with her and shout defiance at the enemy.

In a letter recently written by Bro. D. S. Warner, he said that “holy brethren and sisters * * * should sink deeper into God, and more perfectly know his will: to be more fully filled with his Spirit, endued with his power, melted into his love, conformed to his image and illuminated with his glory.” May be some one is ready to say that they received power when they received the Holy Ghost, the sanctifier. So did I, but to receive the power is one thing, and to use it is quite another. A locomotive may be in the station with the mighty power of steam hissing and throbbing in every valve, but it is, only when the power is directed to the engine and strikes against the piston head that the heavy train moves on along the line. It is necessary for all who have Holy Ghost power to lay hold of God and his word, and through the valve of faith, move out along the whole line of his truth. The word does say that “Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you.” But I know of no scripture that declares the impossibility of increasing the power.

Some of God’s messengers are very cautious to keep up clearly the distinction between the two divine works of justification and sanctification. We would ask why this caution? Because you know the sad result of the justified believing that they had received all that is possible. Therefore the higher experience of entire sanctification is taught that the justified may move on and attain thereunto. Now for the sanctified to believe that there is nothing more attainable for them and there’s nothing more to do, is to bring the same sad result as for the justified to believe he has attained to all in justification. Therefore to avert this trouble it is necessary to prompt the people on in the Christian race by teaching them a wonderful development of all the graces of the Spirit, and the increase of God in our soul, “pressing toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” God help all his people to awaken to the fact that in this reformation there is a mighty forward move on hand. Let us rush to the front and “push the battle through the gates.” The question may be asked. Is it possible to be more fully filled with the Spirit of God after we are sanctified? As the soul grows and expands it is necessary to “walk in the light of the Lord.” and keep all additional space filled with the Spirit of God, else there will be a shrinkage. The trouble is that some refuse to walk in the light to fill up the space, and by “faith and strong endeavor” increase in all the way of truth, and as it is a law of God and nature to not permit a thing to exist that is not used or exercised, the soul soon shrinks back to its former dimension, and this shrinkage once begun it will crowd hard upon the experience you already have. And if you do not awaken to renewed effort in much prayer and watchfulness, all the joy and peace of salvation will be expelled from your soul, and you become a hollow sound. For Jesus’ sake press forward, rest not anywhere, walk in all the light, watch and pray; ask, believe, and receive; keep up a strong determination, filling every particle of space with the Spirit of God, “giving no place to the devil.”

Can we after we are wholly sanctified be more nearly conformed to his image? It is an undeniable fact that we can become more like Jesus in meekness, gentleness, humility, courtesy, etc. It is also true that we can live so near the gates of heaven as to hear and understand his will. Many are lamenting because they do not know the will of God concerning them. Some are going here and there, doing the work of an evangelist with but little knowledge of God’s will. Some may go to try the will of the Lord, and at the close of a meeting they believe it was or was not the order of God. To such we would say to crucify your own will, live nearer to Jesus, and be not “unwise but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” Paul in writing to Timothy said, “Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.” Can the sanctified have a greater illumination of the glory of God? It is true some have run but such short distances up and down the Canaan bank of Jordan, shouting glory until they have almost shouted all the glory out of themselves instead of moving boldly forth by faith and trust into the land to greater and more brilliant glories. Not long since I heard a brother ask why it was that he and some others a few years ago while preaching would be so leaping and bounding that a pulpit could scarcely contain them, but now could preach a whole sermon without a leap? God help them to push out from the shore into new fields, get away down into the valley of humility, get hold of some of the good measures of faith, and they will find such an illumination of God’s glory in their soul as will set them leaping again. It is the experience of those who are on the increase for God to find an increase of glory and also of demonstration in preaching the word.

Yours in the race,

C. Orr.

==========

Easton, Mo

Dear Saints: This morning the dear Lord leads me to write my testimony and tell you how wonderfully he has healed me; and the precious lessons I learned at the meeting. Praise the Lord! the Lord increased my faith, filled me with his love and healed my body. Praise the Lord! before I went to the meeting I thought I had to have a blessing all the time. The Lord would gave me a blessing and when the blessing was gone I thought it might be I was not just right because I did not have a blessing all the time: at the camp meeting a brother in his sermon said “There are some who just want a bleseing all the time. They are not willing to suffer:” that was giving my experience exactly: but I have become willing to suffer. Let us rejoice evermore, pray without ceasing, in every thing give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning us. When I came home from camp meeting I took a severe cold which settled in my nose, throat and longs. I suffered much, could hardly speak at times, could not sing or read aloud. Sister and I took my case to the Lord twice. While we prayed I would feel better but would feel as bad in a short time: so I wrote to the Trumpet family asking them to pray for me: and the hoarseness left me but I still coughed and my lungs still pained me terribly. One in our family said it would take something powerful to take that trouble out of my lungs. I said I had something powerful; I had the Lord, and he had all power. But I was told I must take some lung medicine. Well, I had been trusting the Lord with all my heart, and still I felt so badly. I was tempted badly to get the medicine. I sent for it, but I could not take it, for I had taken the Lord for my physician. I told the Lord if he would heal my lungs, take all the cough, pain and hoarseness away, I would not take the medicine and I would give him all the praise, and glory to Jesus! he wonderfully healed my lungs, nose and throat. All the pain, cough and hoarseness is gone. My lungs are strong and well, praise the Lord! I never took a drop of the medicine, and I can give God all the glory. The Lord says he will not let us be tempted above that we are able to bear, but will, with the temptation make a way to escape. The Lord knew when the medicine came into the house, it was about as much as I could bear, and he did with the temptation, make a way for my escape. To day I can say I am wonderfully healed by the mighty power of God. Saved, sanctified, satisfied trusting in Jesus and filled with all the fullness of God. Pray for me that I may do God’s will at all times. Your sister, all on the altar,

Emma Switzer.
