SPIRIT’S TEACHINGS.

_____

O Jesus, my Savior, I know thou art mine;
For thee all the pleasures of earth I resign:
Thou art my rich treasure, my joy and my love,
None richer possessed by the angels above.

Thy Spirit first taught me to know I was blind,
Then taught me the way of salvation to find:
And when I was sinking in gloom and despair,
My Jesus relieved me and bade me not fear.

In vain I attempt to describe what I feel:
The language of mortals forever must fail:
My Jesus is precious, my soul’s in a flame;
I’m raised in sweet raptures while praising his name.

I find him in singing: I find him in prayer,
In sweet meditation he always is there;’
My constant companion, O may we ne’er part!
All glory to Jesus, he dwells in my heart!

If ever I loved thee, it’s now, my dear Lord:
I love thy dear people, thy ways, and thy Word;
I love all creation, I love sinners, too.
Since Jesus has died to redeem them from woe.

When happy in Jesus I regard not the proud,
Tho’ sinners despise me for shouting so loud:
His love overwhelms me, had I wings I would fly,
And praise him in mansions of glory on high.

BUSIED WITH CHRIST IN BAPTISM.

_____

(The following thoughts wore first written for a private letter.)

D R Brown,

COTTAGEVILLE. S. C.

Dear Brother in Christ: Your letter of Feb. 11, received. Excuse our delay in answering. In the love of Jesus I wish to say to you, that if you will obey the word of God, you will be buried with Christ in baptism. I say not this as my opinion, but he that is a “doer of the Word shall know of the doctrine.” “We shall know the truth, and the truth makes us free.” No advocate of sprinkling or pouring for baptism on earth knows what he teaches is truth. Because no person can know that a lie is the truth. They may think it is so, but he that has the truth, and is in the Spirit of God, knows what he teaches is God’s truth, and teaches it with authority. Mr. Prickett, whose tract you have sent us, has never been led to his position by the Word. He saw that it was inconsistent to have more than one way to baptize; hence, was forced for the sake of consistency to throw away all but one mode: and as Methodism practices sprinkling chiefly because more convenient, he presumed to discard that which only is baptism in the sight of God. We have immersed hundreds of the most humble and conscientious children of God who had had water sprinkled or poured upon them and called baptism by the preacher, whose consciences were led by the Word and Spirit of God to ignore these Popish rites; and when buried with Christ in baptism the Spirit of God witnessed to them that then only had they been baptized; and the glory of God filled their hearts. And we can truthfully say that we have known thousands who have had that experience.

Just so long as you wish to have an open heart to conviction will the word of God disturb your mind with thoughts that you have not been baptized until you follow the plain example Christ has set before you in his own baptism.

I have several translations that render the word immerse every time, to say the least as good and faithful translations as King James, and rendered by men who were not controlled by an earthly king’s rules, as were the translators of our common version. I have also translations by two of the most profound scholars of the Presbyterian body, i. e. Geo. Campbell and James McKnight of Scotland, both of whom render the word immersion when they translate it at all. And both admit it simply means that.

John Wesley’s translation with notes admits that the “ancient manner of baptism was immersion.” See his notes on Rom. 6:4. Martin Luther admits that “every one that was baptized in the primitive apostolic church was put clear under the water to represent the burial of Christ, and raised out of the water to represent the resurrection of Christ. And that by our baptism we bear witness that we are partakers of his resurrection.”

This is just the symbolic truth that the inspired apostle associates with the ordinance in Rom. 6 and Col. 2. Any person who can read this testimony and deny that baptism is a burial has presumed to contradict the word of God. “We are buried with him by baptism.” “We are buried with him in baptism.” Thus saith God, and it does not. detract one iota from the force of these texts to say they have reference to spiritual baptism. The specific verb baptize must express the same action whether it be into a literal element, water, into the Spirit of God, or whether it is used metaphorically, as Christ did, to denote being plunged into great suffering. The burial in baptism in Rom. and Col. is literal baptism. The spiritual use of the word also proves it is always an induction. Hence it is connected with the preposition in, and into, — “were baptized into Jesus Christ.” “were baptised into his death.” Rom. 6:3.4. By one Spirit, are we all baptized into one body.” 1 Cor 12:13. “Have been baptized into Christ.” Gal. 3:27. Now it must be evident that if spiritual baptism is an act which inducts, immerses us into Christ, into his body, into his death then literal baptism employing the same verb, and prepositions, “in” and “into,” must be an immersion into water. “Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the regions round about Jordan, and were baptized of him in [Greek EN] Jordan.” Mat. 3:5, 6. “I indeed baptize you with [Greek EN, i. e., in] water.” “He shall baptize you with [EN—in] the Holy Ghost, and with [EN-in] fire.” Mat. 3:11. Any honest man who will look at the original word from which “with” is here translated, also in every other place where “WITH WATER,” is used in reference to baptism, will find that the preposition is the same that is nearly everywhere in the New Testament translated, in. Hence Geo. Campbell, the Scotch Presbyterian translator of the four Gospels, renders it “in water,” “in the Holy Spirit,” and never WITH water, and he even admits that this use of the word “with” was a perversion of the pure truth, and the result of sectish bias. Let any honest person examine the matter by means of the Greek text, and interlinear translation in the Emphatic Diaglott, and he will be forced to admit the charge. Let us just see for a moment how sectarian dishonesty stands out to view. Take the third chapter of Matthew; in the first verse the preposition, “in” occurs twice; “In those days,” “in the wilderness.” In each case in is derived from EN, Greek. Again, Ver. 3. “In the wilderness,” in is from EN. Ver. 6. “In [from EN] Jordan. Next we come, to verse 11, where we have “baptize with water,” “with Holy Ghost,” “with fire;” every time from the same Greek word, EN. Passing to the very next verse (12), “whose fan is in [Greek EN] his hand.” And again in the last verse, “In [Greek EN] whom I am well pleased.” Here we have just nine instances of the Greek preposition EN, in this chapter, and every time it is translated “in,” except when it refers to baptism, in verse 11. So the translators admit it always means in, except when in water, then it means something else.

The next place the Scriptures are thus “withed” is Mark 1. Let us go through that chapter in the same way. Ver.2, “in the prophets.” Greek EN. Ver. 3, “in [EN] the wilderness.” Ver. 4, “in [EN] the wilderness.” Ver. 5, “in the river.” Now we come to Ver. 8, in which we have “I indeed have baptized you with [Greek EN] water; but he shall baptize you with [Greek EN] the Holy Ghost.” Here we have the same word twice used in connection with baptism, and each time rendered with. But passing on to verse 9, we have, “In [Greek EN] those days Jesus came from Nazareth to Galilee, and was baptized of John in [Greek EN] Jordan.” A false rendering by the use of with, in this passage, could not be introduced; because “baptized with Jordan” would be too ridiculous. Hence they had to render the preposition correctly here, though it does relate to baptism. Next, Ver. 11, “in [EN] whom I am well pleased.” Ver. 13, “in [EN] the wilderness.” Ver. 14, “in [EN] prison.” Ver. 19, “in [EN] the ship.” Verse 20, “in [ENJ the ship.” Ver. 33, “in [EN] their synagogue,” “in [EN] the morning.” Ver. 45, “in [EN] the desert.”

So we find the Greek preposition, EN, sixteen times in this chapter, and always rendered in plain English, “in,” except twice in verse 8, where it relates to baptizing in water, and in the holy Spirit. To the very persons of whom it is recorded that they were baptized [immersed] in the river Jordan, Ver. 5, John is made to say, “I indeed have baptized you with water.” Ver. 8. The same word being used in both places, it must be evident to all fair minds that if John baptized them in [EN] Jordan, he also baptized them in [EN] water.

In this same way we might go through Luke 3, John 1, and Acts 1, where the translators try to keep out of the water by withing; i. e., wresting the Scripture, and in every place is seen the marks of an unscrupulous sacrifice of the truth to the interest of the party creed. The same preposition that is elsewhere rendered “in,” is made to read, “with,” when speaking of baptism, where it was possible to do so. Let any one try to render that little word, with, right through, they will reduce the word of God to nonsense. The correct rendering of a word will make sense every time, and the correct sense. A word wrongly translated will make sense part of the time, but an erroneous sense. And most of the time it will not make sense at all. Hence the translators employed by King James, were compelled to render EN in all places except in a few instances where they could twist the Word, and thus have they produced about the only argument that is resorted to by the teachers of Roman Catholic sprinkling for Protestant baptism, but no pedo-Baptist that is able to examine the Greek text on this point, and has done so, can honestly cite “with water,” as an argument. All, therefore, who do so, do it either ignorantly, or as “will worship” of their creed.

The prepositions in, and into, being used in connection with baptism, proves that baptism is an act of immersion. Jesus “was baptized of John in Jordan,” and afterwards “came up out of the water.” Mat. 1:9, 10. Now the word translated “in,” in the above passage is from EIS, which literally means into; and it is so rendered in the Greek in the Emphatic Diaglott, “was dipped of John into Jordan.” This is a correct rendering of the original words.

The German Scriptures employ the word TAUF, to translate baptize. TAUF, and UNDERTAUF mean to dip, to dip under; Martin Luther says the, word baptize means to be put deep under, and the mystery or symbolic import of the ordinance requires the same. This is true. The Apostle teaches us that baptism is a burial, a testimony of our faith in the burial and resurrection of Christ, and of the fact we also are dead to sin, and raised from the dead to walk with Christ in newness of life.

Both sprinkling and pouring are meaningless ceremonies, and neither has any resemblance to that which the sacred ordinance was designed to show forth. But we, according to the Word, “are buried with him — Christ — in baptism,” being dead to sin, and raised up together with him. Amen.

TESTIMONIES.

Dear Trumpet Readers: The blessed Lord saved me in 1884, and healed me at the same time of lung trouble and other troubles that had set in, and before I could hardly believe it was such a quick work. I got up by the help of God, and rode sixteen miles in a big wagon. I praise God for all his goodness to me! Praise God for a Bible experience, sanctified and satisfied. The Bible says all things work together for our good, and I believe it. Pray for me.

Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony. This evening finds me sweetly saved and kept by the power of God. I do praise God for a full and free salvation that keeps me from committing sin. I am trusting God for both soul and body and I am determined by the grace of God to ever live true to him. It seems that Satan wonderfully tempts me sometimes, but God says his grace is sufficient and I just believe the word of God, and whatsoever it says I am willing to measure to. I do praise God for the evening light and for the highway of holiness that keeps me freed from sin. Pray for me, dear saints, that I may not stop to reason with the devil when he brings his temptations up to overthrow me. I am sixteen years of age. Your brother in Christ,

William Cline.

Dear Saints of God: This evening finds me saved from all sin, and sanctified to do the whole will of God. I do thank God from the depth of my soul for deliverance from the very clutches of Satan. I was saved over a year ago, and I was going with an unsaved young man, and it was not long before God showed me that I must be separate from sinners, as his Word teaches. And the dear Lord did wonderfully lead me out, and enabled me to give up all worldly company. But in about three months the devil sent him back and I soon commenced going with him again, thinking, or trying to think it was all right. But from the very time I consented in my mind to go with him, I kept growing spiritually colder and colder, but still went on professing to be saved. But in a few months the Lord wakened me up to the fact that I had no salvation. But praise the Lord! he gave me a willingness to begin measuring up to his Word, and now I am standing alone for Jesus, and do feel that every shore-line is cut loose, and I am just launching out in the ocean of God’s love. There may be some poor soul on the same line I was and does not realize it, and if there is, I would just intreat you to let go of everything, and stand firm for God. For this above mentioned gives room for worldly talk, and leads you away from God. I do know what I was, and that God just took me from the jaws of hell, and begets all the glory. I want all the saints to pray earnestly for me. Your sister, saved and kept,

Maggie Cline.

Dear Saints the World Over: That you may know that the great Shepherd has some little sheep away here in far off Georgia, I have decided, for the glory of the Master, to send my testimony for the first time. As I now write the good Lord so fills my soul with his glory, that I am made to say, Glory be to God for his goodness to me! My soul is so happy. Praise his holy name forever! I was converted in 1873, joined the M. E. sect, and soon after, while I was praying in secret asking the good Lord to show me what he would have me do, I then and there received the Master’s call to the ministry. I was only thirteen years old, but have never doubted the call. In 1883 I applied and got license to exhort, but this did not satisfy my longing soul. In 1886 I applied for license to preach, but was refused because I did not understand English Grammar. In 1887 I applied again and though opposed, barely succeeded. I went on and did about the best I could, but still there was an aching void in my soul. I could not baptize those that believed, though my commission from Jesus was to preach and baptize; but nevertheless I was doing the best I knew to do until I met dear Bro. Gay in the fall of 1893, who gave me the first ray of this blessed evening light. Oh what golden glory streaming in my soul! Glory to God in the highest! In May 1894 I bid farewell to sectism, and on Tuesday morning I quit ploughing and rode fourteen miles in order to follow the blessed Master in baptism. I have taken his yoke, it fits well. I have taken his burden, I love to carry it. I learn of him glorious truths, and praise his holy name I find rest to my soul. I love to follow Jesus; he is so good to me; he sanctifies and satisfies and makes me free indeed. The Lord has planted his church here and the Holy Ghost has made me overseer. All the saints pray for me, that I may watch and lead the little flock unerring till the good Shepherd shall call them home. He says we shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Praise his holy name! I am ready to be measured by his Word or weighed in his balances. He not only saves my soul but heals my body; he is my physician, I have no use for drugs.

He saves me from the tobacco habit of which I have been a slave for twenty years. The Lord wonderfully saves me, and has given me my wife and daughter and one of my sisters to walk with me in this blessed evening light. Brethren, help me to pray for my dear old mother who is yet unsaved. Hoping after awhile to meet you with the blessed Lord, where parting will be no more, I am yours sweetly saved in the one body,

Robert B. Wren.

Bro. Gerhard Wall, Cameron, Harper Co., Kan., who lives near there in the “Cherokee strip,” writes that he is in great need of provisions for his family and horses, and prommises to repay every dollar sent to help him in his present need. Let the Lord direct your giving.

Persons living in the states of New York and Pennsylvania, who think of coming to the Grand Junction camp meeting, should send their address at once to T. D. Sheridan, 177 Washington St., Buffalo, N. Y., stating that they desire to go, and send list of names of all you know who would be likely to go, and he will make arrangements for rates.

BIBLE READINGS.

We have now two boxes of Bible Readings, by Bro’s Speck and Kilpatrick, as they came from the bindery. Not knowing there were any more in stock, a short time ago, we put the price down from 75 cts. to 30 cts. for those on hands, and returned the money to some who sent in the last orders. We will now sell the remainder of those on hands for 30 cts. each. Six or more, 25 cts. each.

Since our first notice was inserted, about the first of last month, of special offer on books and tracts by freight, the Lord moved many to accept the offer, and we have received orders for about 173 boxes. These lave been sent to various places throughout the United States, from ocean to ocean, and one order to Europe. May God bless them to the good of many souls. We were obliged to increase the force of office workers, whom the Lord supplied, and also do considerable night work, and yet were unable to fill all orders promptly.

During this time our indebtedness was reduced to $600 00, and we paid out over $600.00 cash for paper and printing material, besides other expenses.

RATES FOR CAMP MEETING.

The railroad companies in Michigan and Central States have granted reduced rates to persons attending the Grand Junction camp meeting. The rates have been extended on a number of roads as far east as the New England Slates. Full fare is to be paid going to the meeting, taking a certificate from the R. R. agent at each place where ticket is bought, then only one-third fare will be charged for return. Further instructions will be given through the GOSPEL TRUMPET soon. Circulars giving full instructions will be sent upon application.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

_____

Grand Junction, Mich., Apr. 22, 1895.

Dear Brethren: Last week we promised to tell you something about the work in Chicago, but only a faint idea can be given by either tongue or pen, and we trust you will bear with us if it should require some length of time to tell about it. Our first evening there was one not soon to be forgotten. After asking the direction and protection of the Lord, shortly after dark wife and I in company with two other gospel workers from the “Open Door Mission,” started out to see what we could do for the rescue of souls.

AMONG THE HAUNTS OF SIN.

A few minutes walk brought us to the dens of iniquity, where sin abounded on every hand. We felt the place would have been more rightly named had it been called the street of Sodom, adjoining Gomorrah Avenue, at the brink of perdition. Here was the place for which we had started to seek out the lost and fallen. Here was the place for cur work to begin. Each of us with a number of tracts proceeded at once to

THE BARREL HOUSES.

Some may ask what kind of a place is that? Why they are called such we do not know, unless it is because there are so many barrels of liquor sold out by the drink. Some of us had never been inside such a place before. A short description of the first one entered will answer for all. The place is what we would term a “low- down” den for making drunkards. A place where men are robbed of their senses, of their reputation, honor, and every thing about them that is noble, where they are robbed of their pocket books, their love of home. It is where homes are made destitute; where the fuel is obtained for family troubles causing brokenhearted wives, mothers and children; where homes are bartered for drink; preparations are made for street brawls, police stations, and penitentiaries.

As we opened the door and entered, Alas! we saw it was a place of swift destruction to the souls of men. Our hearts almost failed us to witness such a pitiable sight. It seemed almost as if the very fumes of the pit greeted us as we entered. But we had no time to lose, no time to stand and look around; there we were in the midst of between fifty and one hundred drunken and drinking men. Some were drinking at the bar from glasses, some from bottles, others in groups were drinking from pails. There was quarreling, cursing, and awful words of blasphemy, boisterous talking, and stealing going on in there almost continually.

We hurriedly pressed our way through the crowded groups, handing out tracts that would point out to them the way of salvation, inviting them to the mission where they could near the gospel preached and also get a free breakfast next morning. Many would promise to come. After speaking a kind word to this one and that one as we passed them by, telling them of the power of Jesus to save their soul, and make free from sin, we then would go on to another den of the same kind, realizing the protection of God over us. Praise his name! Soon we turned our steps in another direction and in a few minutes were in the vicinity where almost every door was the

HOUSE OF THE HARLOT.

Truly, “Her house is the way to hell, going down to the ways of death.” Prov. 7:27. There we saw the women in abundance “with the attire of an harlot, and subtile in heart,” who were “lying in wait at every corner,” as it were, to entice such as would follow after her lewd ways. Here, as we have said, almost every door was a house of ill-fame, with from six to thirty girls and young women in each, and many of the proprietors were women; while others were governed by men. There was also a bar-room in almost every house.

Our mission there was quite a different one from that of their regular visitors and we well knew that our presence would not be welcomed, especially by the proprietors. But we placed our lives in the hands of God and asked his direction as to where we should go, and did not wait for any invitation from the inmates of those houses.

We realized that we were now truly on the enemy’s territory, but wherever God led, it was safe to go, even to the den of lions if need be, and the lion must be bearded in his den, as it were, even so must these haunts of sin be entered to find those who are Pound down in sin. There was not a policeman to be found in this part of the city. They have no use for the police, and the police have but little desire to enter such quarters. As we passed along the street we were shown house after house, which was said to be occupied by blood-thirsty highway robbers. In fact, almost all the houses in that quarter of the city was occupied by wicked and dangerous characters.

As we visited one after another of these places we finally came to one where one of our number had been told by the proprietor, that he would be instantly shot if he ever entered the door again. He felt it wisdom to remain on the outside while the remainder of us went in to point the poor souls to Jesus. Here we found drunken girls, scantily dressed, cursing and carousing. Yet we had a chance to tell some of them of Jesus and his power to save. In some of these places we went two, three and four rooms back from the front entrance, often finding noble looking and beautiful young ladies who desired salvation, desired to make their escape, but were held almost as with bonds of slavery by the keepers of such places; in fact, they are slaves. Some of them have been kidnapped, and brought there, others have been bought, or hired, or deceived by being told that they were being taken to a pleasant home or boarding house, only to find the nature of the place when too late to make their escape. They cannot get away unless rescued by some one. If space would permit we would tell you some of the ways in which girls are entrapped.

Upon leaving those places of vice and sin, as we turned the corner and passed on down the street a woman was standing in the doorway at the foot of the stairs, near where we were passing, and upon approaching her with the tidings of salvation, she remarked that she once know the ways of the Lord and was happy, but had fallen, and drawing a revolver from her pocket, she said. “My heart is stone to night. I am now waiting to shoot a men when he comes along. He has wronged me, and I will have revenge.” She was urged to give up such an idea, and come to the mission and give her heart to the Lord. A few minutes walk brought us to

THE OPEN DOOR MISSION.

Here we found the evening service still in progress, and the gospel being preached in all its purity, and souls saved at almost every meeting each day. It being near the Polk St. depot, and widely known throughout the city, travellers from all parts of the United Stated find their way there, as well as many of the preachers, gospel workers, and students from the Moody Institute of the city, and the pure word of God is reaching many, and its fulness will speedily reach all nations of the earth.

We heard a middle aged man from a wealthy family in Germany, testify to the wonderful saving power of God. About three weeks previous to this he was on his way to throw himself into the lake to end his life. He had meet with adverse circumstances, became penniless, homeless, degraded, and leaving one of the “barrel houses,” his shirt torn from his back, his other clothes torn, no hat, shoes without soles, his way to the lake led him by the. mission, where he was attracted by the music; entered the house, and was saved before he left, and started life anew, and the next day obtained a permanent job of work, and is stiff rejoicing in the love of Jesus.

Another well-to-do man from Denver, Colo., was on his way home having to change cars at Chicago, while sauntering down the sinful street, he came into the mission to see what was going on and God saved his soul before he left. Many interesting cases and scenes could be noted, but this is sufficient to show you all the great necessity of praying much and earnestly for Bro. Tufts and co-workers, whom God has called to the work there. They have rented the mission room and fourteen rooms in the two stories or flats above the mission for $125 00 a month.

Page 3

Having to sign a lease for one year for $1500 00 rent. That may seem to some like an enormous sum, especially where those in charge have nothing with which to make the payment but the promises of God. Well it is quite an amount, and besides that the rooms are nearly all to furnish with furniture, etc. But when we consider the value of souls, we feel that amount of money should not stagger our faith when we know God is moving in the matter.

Sunday our second day there was a busy day in the work of the Lord. Three services were held, besides a number of street meetings, and between meetings a number came for prayers for their spiritual benefit, others for the healing of their bodies.

THE DEAF EARS UNSTOPPED, AND DUME SPEAK.

A lady who had been deaf and dumb for a number of years came to the mission a few weeks ago, and in answer to prayer God touched her with his healing power, insomuch that she can now hear and speak so as to carry on a conversation to some extent, and is rapidly learning to speak as she hears the words. This so encouraged some of her friends, insomuch that three or four others who were deaf and dumb came on Sunday eve to learn the ways of the Lord. One sister who had been deaf and dumb for thirty years, ever since she was three years of age, had her leg injured below the knee by a cable car, making her lame, and was suffering great pain, having doctored to no avail. She desired to be anointed according to James 5:15. Her limb was anointed and as prayer was being offered the pain was instantly removed. To God be all the praise! Her ears were, then anointed and prayer offered for the restoration of her hearing, and speech. Immediately she opened her month and spoke aloud and said she was happy, and repeatedly answered questions, and praised God aloud. Her friends said it was the first words she had spoken for thirty years. The next morning after prayer, her power of speech and hearing seemed to be increased. We realized the fulfillment of the prophey in Isa. 35:5, 6. and that “Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, to day, and forever.’’

On Monday I was called to Milwaukee for a few hours, and while there met dear Bro, Hahn, and Bro. Radebaugh, who are pushing the work there amid much opposition and financial burden, but God is working and many precious souls are being searched out. Praise his name! We arrived safely home Wednesday morning.

Dear Saints: To day finds us saved in Jesus. Since our last writing to the Trumpet, we went to Stockton and held meeting in a house near there. The people seemed to be very ignorant of salvation, but there was seed sown, and we hope it will bring forth fruit unto God. Since then I have been laboring with my hands, but am ready to go into the field again. If any one wishes meetings in these parts write me at Slate, Kan. Yours in him.

Clam Lake, Mich,, Apr. 16, 1895.

Dear Saints of God: In our last report we were in Bro. Sutherland’s neighborhood, nine miles south of Marshall. We had a very precious meeting. Many there are won to the truth but would not yield to God, although God did gather out a few who are willing to follow him. There were twelve or fourteen consecrations. To God be all the glory. From there the Lord sent us up here, where they have been calling for us for some time. So we begun meeting in the Clam Lake school house with good results. God saved some, and some pushed their way through to Canaan and were made happy in their possessions. From here we go over to Bro. Koffman’s neighborhood, and will hold as long as the Lord wills. After that we expect to

go to Browntown, on the west side of Torch lake. We will stay in these parts and labor till camp meeting time. We ask all the saints to pray that God may use us much to his glory. Amen.

To the Family of God: We have just dosed a meeting with victory through Jesus. Praise his name forever! About fifteen consecrations, and a few justified, and reclaimed back to God. A few received the Holy Spirit, witnessing that they were sanctified. Heb. 10:14, 15. Eleven followed the Lord in baptism. Among this number were three preachers, one Methodist, a Baptist, and one of the so-called Christian denomination. All these are out of all divisions, and we pray that they may keep clear for God. There is great opposition from sect Babylon, but if God be for us, who can be against us? Rom. 8:31.

As the saints have no place to hold meetings except in private houses, we thought it to the glory of God to hold a special meeting in the interest of those that desired to make certain contributions for the erection of a meeting house; which we did, and the result was a donation of one acre of land, and money to buy a great portion of the material for the building. Any one especially led to contribute to this work will please send contributions to Bro. Mat Ford, Jeffersonville, Ky. This house will be begun in August, the Lord willing. We believe the Lord is moving on the hearts of this dear people to have a school also in the near future. May the Lord prosper them in all their labor of love. Yours in him,

E. R. Baber and Co.

Lagrange, Ind., Apr. 18, 1895.

Dear Readers of the Trumpet: God bless you all. After the meeting at the Woodard school house I went to Mt. Pisgah, held meeting over Sunday; went from that part to Marshall Co. Was in meeting at Lapaz; went from there to Stark Co., where my brother was holding meeting. Was with him there until the meeting closed. A good work was done. There were a few consecrations. We then returned to Marshall Co., where we had some glorious meetings in the name of the Lord. I returned to Brushy Prairie to the assembly meeting; the Lord blessed in the meetings there. After the close of the meeting we went to Michigan, and held a three weeks’ meeting in the neighborhood of Bro. Shanks. Bro. Husted, Bro. Yoder and others helped in the meeting. There were six consecrations in all. At the close we had an ordinance meeting. About twenty-one took part.

I came from there to this place. Will begin meeting at the Horner school house Saturday night, the Lord willing. I would say to the brethren about Auburn and Garrett, and also in Lagrange and Marshall Co’s, the Lord willing we will hold meetings through this country after the June camp meeting, and if we had a tabernacle we could reach points that we could not reach very well otherwise. And as one brother has offered to furnish almost half enough money to buy one, if the brethren in the parts mentioned desire meeting at your place and feel the Lord would have you help to purchase the tabernacle, let me know. We will visit all the points where the brethren send help from if the Lord wills. Address me at Lagrange, Ind.

Dear Saints: The Lord has just closed a glorious meeting here held by Bro’s J. B. Peterman and J. L. Green and Co., in which many were convinced of the truth, others were convicted of their sins. Some confessed their sins and accepted the Savior, and were sweetly saved in Jesus. To God be all the glory!

Baptism was administered on two occasions; six were baptized in all. The meeting closed the 8th with an ordinance service, in which ten took part.

We expect, the Lord willing, to hold the first C. M. ever held by the saints of the most high God in Oregon this summer, commencing about about Aug. 15, or 20, and to be held at Woodburn, in Marion Co., or in Linn Co. (Further notice will be given in the Trumpet, and the exact time and place given.) It will last as long as the Lord wills. We are looking to the Lord to send more laborers into the fields of Oregon, and we expect them in time for the C. M. Many saints and laborers are expected to attend this great soul-feast. All the saints of Oregon, California, Washington and Idaho, are especially invited to attend. We are looking to the Lord to send laborers from the East, Bro. and Sister Randolph among them. We expect this meeting to be most spiritual and largely attended. All saints and Trumpet readers everywhere are invited to attend. All who can conveniently, bring tents, bedding, etc. with you, and those who cannot do so, come in the name of the Lord, and you will will be cared for by the help of the Lord. Let all the saints everywhere pray much for the success of this meeting, that many souls may be saved, and much good done in the name of Jesus. Your saved brother, in the one body,

Nishnabotna, Mo., Apr. 14, 1895.

Dear Brethren: I commenced a meeting on the 23d of Feb. at Grand Island, Neb., at the Soldiers’ Home. It lasted about a week, then we had to close on account of coal, so I held a few meetings in the city. Then I returned, and finished up the meeting at the Soldiers Home. The Lord sent Bro. and Sister Kriebel and Co. to help me the last week of the meeting. Two souls got blessedly saved from sin and sectism. Others were following slowly, which we hope wilt get clear in their souls Others were in favor of the truth, but would not walk in the light. From there we went to Kenesaw, met with the dear ones there; had a few meetings which were precious to our souls. On Monday night, Mar. 25, we had an ordinance meeting, which was a glorious feast. The Lord also manifested his power in our midst by two cases of healing, by the laying on of hands and the prayer of faith. Then I came on to Steinauer, Neb., and held meeting in the school house about a week. This is a new place; the evening light has never been preached here. Had large congregations, and the best of order. The Catholic people got interested, and they increased every night. The last night the congregagation was nearly all Catholics. I believe there could be a good work done if a company of workers could go there and hold meetings. I had to close and come home. I expect to stay here a couple of weeks, and then I will be ready to go wherever the Lord leads and opens the way. Pray for me, that the Lord may sink me down deeper in his will, also for my wife that she may be healed and soon be up and about her Master’s business. Your brother saved and sanctified wholly and kept by power divine. My address for the present is Nishnabotna, Mo.

Dear Holy Brethren: We have not reported through the GOSPEL TRUMPET for some time, but we have by no means been idle. We have been laboring in the country near North Platte; held three meetings with good success. We returned to the Platte and held a few meetings. While we were there during cur last few meetings a brother and sister made their escape from Babylon, and came home to Zion with songs and everlasting joy. Dear Bro. Willerton was ordained elder of the church of the living God at North Platte, which was witnessed to by the Holy Ghost.

On the nth of April we started across the country by wagon for this place. Last Saturday evening we stopped to camp, about thirty miles from this place. After taking my horses from the wagon, I set our little sheet-iron stove by the side of the wagon and made a fire, and we began to cook our supper. The prairie caught fire from the stove, and before we could put out the fire, the wagon caught fire and burned up with the most that we had; a part of our clothing, and the bed (except a small part of it) and the tent; and my black-board and charts, which I need so much, were all burned, and a number of things which space will not permit to mention. I only saved the trunk and a few small articles. The loss amounted to about $65 0o; but praise God we have learned to say, “The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away; blessed be the name of the Lord!” This is only one of the many and deep trials through which the dear Lord has brought wife and I since we have come to this drouth- stricken country, but I can say of a truth that we have learned many precious lessons, and we are settling down deeper into God and his humility and power, and rising higher in his image. We are receiving the eternal weight of glory. We arrived at this place last night, and found a large field open and ripe for the pure gospel. We will remain in this country as long as the Lord wills, and from here we will go west, Lord willing. The work is established in this western part of Nebraska, and God is raising up a host for himself. We have several calls for meeting. We remain your saved brother and sister in the holy family of God,

Wm. A. and Nellie Randolph.

Dear Trumpet Family: For the first time, as the dear Lord leads, I will write what he has done for me. He saves and keeps me each day. About two years ago, through the preaching of one of God’s holy ministers, he showed me where I stood I belonged to the sect for twenty-five years, and the dear Lord called me out. I was a great tobacco user for about thirty-five years, and I called upon the dear Lord to cleanse me from all filthiness of the flesh. Praise his holy name! He took the tobacco appetite away. And I had the stomach trouble; He cleansed me all out clean, and made me well. Glory be to Jesus! I have not wanted tobacco from that day to this, and I ask the dear saints to pray for me. Dear Trumpet Reapers: My heart is running over with praise and love for my Master, King and Redeemer. Oh the joy of salvation is wonderful. How this perfect love to

God and the brethren helps one over the rough places in life. I have had such a yearning to help bring in souls to Christ since my own soul was saved that I want to deny myself of every luxury. Once while praying that I might know the Lord’s will and what he would have me do, this text came so forcibly to my mind that I feel it is the answer to my request. Ezek. 38:7. “Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.” Oh what a blessed work! Still how much there is to do the future will only reveal. I write this, that perhaps some one may read, who is pining for some great work to do for the Lord, that they do not despise the day of small things, remembering that only a cup of cold water given in the name of Christ will receive a reward. I have taken the Lord as my physician for both soul and body, and in both he has been true to his promises. It pays to trust the Lord. Your sister kept by the power of God,

For some years I have not testified through the GOSPEL TRUMPET because time and space was too much needed for something else. I promised the Lord last winter if he would heal our little boy of the lung fever I would publish it as far as possible. Thus far I have neglected, but he reminds me of the duty I owe to him. During our stay at Antwerp, O. last winter Jerry was severly afflicted with this terrible disease; our faith was greatly tried. Part of the time he was unsconcious. We had given up about all hope of his recovery until special encouragement came from the Lord. We then annointed him with oil, and laid hands on him, burning up with fever, and the Lord truly healed him. To the King of kings and Lord of lords be everlasting praise. I am glad to say we are saved in Jesus. He is teaching us precious lessons every day. I have made many mistakes and blunders in the past, but my intentions were all for the best. To God be all the glory for teaching and bringing me out of all not pleasing to him, and setting me in his grace and truth. I owe, not only my thanks to God, but also to brethren which have been helpers for my spiritual good and advancement. Let all pray that I may be more efficient and useful for the Lord in every way possible, and that I may never become puffed up. but be filled with the meekness of Christ, our most precious example. I am learning. Truly advancement is indispensible to maintain salvation and keep in pace with the onward move of God in these last and perilous times. Pray for us. Your brother in defence of the gospel,

OBITUARIES.

Akin. — Fayette Eugene Akin was born in Marshall Co.. Ind., March 5, 1852, died March 29, 1895; aged 43 years and 14 days. His death was very unexpected. He went to his work on the morning of the 28th well, bade his family good bye, as was his custom on going to his labor. About four o’clock in the afternoon he was struck on the head by a fourteen-pound sledge hammer, which flew off from the handle. In a short time after he was struck he became unconscious and never rallied, but died about noon the next day. He leaves a wife and eight children, and a large number of friends and relatives to mourn his loss. He was beloved by all who knew him. He had once been an elder in the church of the living God, but after he went to South Chicago had become discouraged and backslidden in heart, but still had a desire to be saved. They had requested meeting to he at their house the night he was hurt, and that day there was prayer and fasting for them. The men that worked with him that day said they had never seen him so cheerful as he was that day. His wife said from the time she looked upon him after he was hurt, she would serve God from that time on. Others of the family promised to seek the Lord. May the dear Lord bless even this sad event to the good of their souls. The funeral was held in the U. B. house at Grovertown, Ind. It was a very large gathering of people, who listened attentively to the Word. Text Mat. 24:44, with other scriptures as the Lord directed.

THE HOLY SPIRIT OF PROMISE.

_____

PROMISED THROUGH THE PROPHETS.

Isa. 44:3 — For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my Spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring.

Ezek. 36:25-29 — Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I pint within you: and will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God. And I will also save you from all your uncleannesses; and I will call for the corn, and will increase it, and lay no famine upon you.

Joel 2:28, 29 — And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions: and also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my Spirit.

PROMISE THROUGH CHRIST.

Luke 24:49 — And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

John 4:14 — But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

7:37-39 — In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

14:16, 17 — And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 26 — But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

15:26 — But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me.

16:7-13 — Nevertheless I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they believe not on me; of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Luke 11:13 — If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children; how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him.

Acts 1:4 — And being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

FULFILLED.

Acts 2:1-4 — And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

TESTIFIED TO.

Acts 2:16 — But this is that which was spoken of by the prophet Joel. 33 —

Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.

TO WHOM PROMISED?

Acts 2:38 — Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

3:25 — Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.

5:32 — And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

Gal. 3:14 — That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. 29 — And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

THIS IS THE WITNESS.

1 Jno. 5:9, 10 — If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself; he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

Rom. 8:16 — The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.

Eph. 1:13 — In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also, after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise.

Jno. 14:20 — At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

1 Jno. 2:3 — And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 5, 6 — But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also to walk, even as he walked.

3:24 — And hereby we know that he abideth in us by the Spirit which he hath given us.

4:13 — Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

EVERLASTING LIFE.

Jno. 5:24. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation: but is passed from death unto life.” Some take, this text and try to prove that if they only believe (with the head) and be baptized, they will be saved; it matters not how much sin they do, they cannot lose the life: if they could, it would not be everlasting, and thereby take license to sin as much as they please. The worst is, most of such people never stop sinning long enough to get the life: and, of course, there is no danger of them losing that which they never have been in possession of. Being already low down in sin, they cannot fall.

We find according to God’s word, that this life is only promised on certain conditions. Jesus says, “If a man keep [obey] my sayings, he shall never see death.” Jno. 8:51. “Nevertheless if thou warn the righteous man, that the righteous sin not, and he doth not sin, he shall surely live.” Eze. 3:21. “He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” 1 Jno. 5:12. As long as we keep, or obey the sayings of Jesus, we can keep him: hence we have the (spiritual) life: but as soon as a person turns from his righteousness, and commits sin, he dies (spiritually), loses, the life. Christ is the life (14:6), and it is all right; and will last forever, because Christ is the same yesterday, and to day, and forever. Heb. 13:8. But the man simply loses Christ, by violating his law, which is sin (1 Jno. 3:4), and where sin is, Christ will not stay. 1 Cor. 3:17.

“NO MAN IS ABLE TO PLUCK THEM OUT OF MY FATHER’S HAND.”

Jno. 10:28, 29. “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father which gave them me, is greater than all, and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”

“Shall never perish.” We find a great many “shalls” in God’s word. Take your Bibles, and read the following texts: Deut. 28th chapter. Psa. 22:25-31. Matt. 5:1-9. 18:19. Mark 17:24. Jno. 14:12-14. 15:7. All these and hundreds of other precious (shalls) promises are in the Bible, but they are all given on conditions, that we meet the conditions demanded of God: and when we do what he requires of us, he will never fail on his part. Praise his name! It is very true, no man can pluck them out of the hand of God: if it were possible, there are many who would take pleasure in doing so. But thank God he has the book, and keeps the names out of reach of men; and God himself will only blot out the names of those who sin: and no man is able to make us sin; not even the devil can do that. “For I am persuaded that neither [physical] death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, northings present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature [devil included] shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Rom. 8:38, 39. And as long as we have the love of God in us we will keep his commandments. 1 Jno. 5:3. St. Jno. 14:21, 23. 15:10.

The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and are safe. Prov. 18:10. The devil cannot touch us so long as we stay in Christ. 1 Jno. 5:18. But each individual has power to turn away from God, and commit sin. Our free moral agency will never be taken from us as long as we are in the world. We are kept by the power of God, through faith unto salvation. 1 Pet. 1:5. As long as we trust in God, he will keep us from evil. 2 Thess. 3:3. But if we fail to trust in him, to keep us from falling, and enter into the temptation of the devil, we would be sure to fall. For by faith ye stand. 2 Cor. 1:24. Every branch in me [Christ] that beareth not fruit [Eph. 5:9,10] he [God] taketh away. Jno. 15:2. No man can do it, but God does it himself, on account of disobedience.

WHAT? SAY SOME, GOD PUNISH HIS OWN SON? SEND HIM TO HELL?

“Whosoever shall say, Thou fool [or in other words commit sin] shall be in danger of hell fire.” Matt. 5:22. God has no pleasure in the people doing so. Eze. 18:32. He willeth not the death of any. [2 Pet. 3:9.] But for the sin, which he hath done, he shall die for it. Eze. 33:12, 13, 18. May God help the people to see that they must live right, or suffer the vengeance of eternal fire. [1 Cor. 6:9, 10.] And he that sinneth is not a child of God, but is of the devil. [1 Jno. 3:8, 9].

But we hear some say,

“GOD WILL ALWAYS BRING THEM BACK.”

“Although they may wander away, God will never suffer them to be lost eternally; but will finally bring them back, before too late.” It is very true, that God will receive all who will put away their abominations, and return to him; and live “soberly, righteously, and godly; but he will not compel them to return. It is a matter of choice left to them as when they were first saved. To prove that they can be eternally lost after being made free from sin, we will notice a few texts of scripture.

Heb. 6:4-6. “For it is impossible for those who have been made partakers of the Holy Ghost, etc., if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance.

“For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth; there remaineth no more sacrifice for sin, but a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.” Heb. 10:26, 27. Now the just shall live by faith; but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him,” How far back can a man draw? Ans. Unto perdition. “But we are not of them that draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul [eternally], Heb.. 5:9. Heb. 10:3, 39. Who will dare to stand up in defiance of the word of God, — who has arranged the whole plan of salvation, and has power to execute the same, — and say that a man cannot be lost eternally, even after receiving the Holy Ghost? All who will venture to do so, must reap their sad reward in eternal punishment. Either adding too, or taking away from God’s Word is dangerous business. Rev. 22:18, 19.

“Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; let him know that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way, shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.” Jas. 5:19, 20. All sin produces spiritual death. Eze. 18:4. Jas. 1:15. But after losing their life, if they will even meet the requirements of God, he will receive them back again, and restore their spiritual life (1 Jno. 5:16, 17), and thereby save them from eternal death, the second death. Rev. 20:14.

PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS.

Read Matt.25:1-12. They all had their lamps trimmed and burning when they started out. (They were converted.) But the foolish took no oil with them (did not get sanctified). But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps (this signifying the Holy Spirit); and at midnight there was a cry made. Behold the bridegroom cometh, go ye out to meet him. They all arose, and began to trim their lamps: and the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out. They lost what they had, by not going on to perfection. And the worst was, it was too late for them to get ready in time to go in; but when they knocked; he answered and said, “Verily I say unto you, I know you not.” A great many people at this present age (as this is the time Jesus referred to) get converted, and start alright in the service of God; but after while they hear holiness preached, and see their privilege, and duty to get sanctified, which only prepares us to meet Christ the bridegroom, and like the five foolish virgins, they neglect their duty, and finally reject sanctification; and the result is they lose what they have, go in-

to darkness, and will not be ready when Jesus comes. “Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man shall come. Matt. 25:13. Many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved.” Matt. 24:11-15.

This alone is enough to convince any reasonable, honest person, that there is a liability of being lost after converted and on the way, unless we hold out faithful and live right to the end. Now let us see if it is possible to fall away

AFTER BEING SANCTIFIED.

We will first notice one text, used by some as an objection. Heb. 10:14. “For by one offering he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified.” By this we learn that sanctification is the perfecting grace. The blood cleanseth (sanctifies) us from all sin. 1 Jno. 1:7. The blood sanctifies. 1 Pet 1:2. Heb. 13:12. Makes us pure even as he (Christ) is pure. 1 Jno. 3:3. Therefore perfect even as the Father which is in heaven is perfect. Matt. 5:48. As long as a person keeps sanctified, he will be perfect. God has so arranged the plan of salvation and it will always remain so, even forever: because the word of God, through which we are saved will stand forever. Psa. 119:89. Matt. 24:35. But should a person turn from his righteousness, and commit sin, he shall even die thereby (Eze.34:18), lose the spiritual life; hence dead in sins (Eph. 2:5), a servant of sin (Jno. 8:34), and of the devil (1 Jno. 3:8). Consequently, he would be neither sanctified, nor perfect, as perfection is only true of the sanctified.

Now to prove that we can fall, after being sanctified, read Heb. 6:4-6. “Wore made partakers of the Holy Ghost, and have tasted the good word of God, and the power of the world to come, if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance. We can see that there is a liability of falling, after receiving the Holy Ghost, which is the sanctifier. Rom. 15:16. “Of how much sorer punishment suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God. and hath counted the blood of the covenant wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the spirit of grace?” Heb. 10:29.

Again we read in 2 Pet. 3:17. “Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your [sanctification] own steadfastness.” The word “steadfastness” signifies the standing, or establishing grace, Rom. 5:2, 1 Thess. 3:13, which is sanctification.

Here we have three positive texts, showing plainly that it is possible, and that people are liable to fall, even after being sanctified. And anyone that is not blinded by the deception that “a person cannot fall,” can see, that there is a possibility of falling as long as we are in the reach of temptation. Salvation only redeems us: places us back on the same plane of holiness, on which man was created, and from which he fell.

We will be tempted of the devil as long as we live in this world: and if we should yield to temptation, enter into it, and commit sin, we would fall just like Adam did, and be lost eternally unless reclaimed and received back again.

But some people, after learning that they cannot establish the idea, that “we cannot fall:” they then say,” If we do fall (yes, if we do)

WE CANNOT BE RECLAIMED.”

It seems that some are determined to twist the word of God, if possible, and try to make it mean something besides what it says. If they fail to get people to believe that it is impossible, to fall, and get them to sleep, and lulled down under that delusion, then they must invent some other scheme of the devil, and by so doing, try to discourage those who know that they were once saved from sin, and are now in the fallen, or backslidden condition. We will see what the Word says about it.

Command. Rev. 2:5. “Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works.”

Instructions. Jas. 5:19, 20. “Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him [get him to return], let him know that he which converteth the sinner [backslider] from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.” If any [saved] man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death [eternal], he shall [pray] ask, and he [God] shall give him life for them that sin not [blaspheme the Holy Ghost] unto death. 1 Jno. 5:16.

Backslider’s hope. Hosea 14:1, 4. “Return unto the Lord thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity. I [the Lord] will heal their backslidings [restore them], I will love them freely. Turn [and come back] O backsliding children, saith the Lord; for I am married unto you.” Jer. 3:14. Praise God! he will receive all who will return, and come to him; unless they have blasphemed against the Holy Ghost, which is the sin unto eternal death.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BACKLSLIDING, AND FALLING AWAY.

To backslide or to fall from grace is to simply neglect duty, or err from the truth. (Gal. 6:1. Jas 5:19), or by sinning a sin which is not unto eternal death. I Jno. 5:16, 17. “He that knoweth to do good and [neglecteth] doeth it not, to him it is sin.” Jas. 4:17. “And sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth [spiritual] death. Jas. 1:15. But God has promised to reclaim or restore in such cases, yet it is very dangerous, also dishonoring to God, and we warn all the righteous, in the name of Jesus, that they sin not. Ezek. 3:21.

To fall away, as stated in Heb. 6:4-6, means to wilfully turn from the Lord, and deny the realities of his salvation; as those described in Heb. 6:4-6 and 10: 26-29. They believed in Christ, and were saved; and some of them were sanctified; and afterwards some of them turned away from Christ: and “trampled tinder I foot the Son of God, and counted the blood of the covenant wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing; and hath done despite unto the [Holy Ghost] spirit of grace.” Heb. 10:29. This is what is meant by “falling away.” It is to deny the power of the Holy Ghost, after having once received it. Jesus calls it the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost: hence it hath no forgiveness in this world, neither in the world to come. Matt. 12:32.

HEALED OF FALLING FITS.

_____

Marseilles, O.

Dear Saints of God: May God bless you all. I want to testify through the GOSPEL TRUMPET that Je- has sus sweetly saved me from all sin and keeps me with peace in my soul, which nothing can disturb. I can say through persecution and trials his grace has been sufficient to keep me from sin. He has not only healed my soul, but has gloriously healed my body of falling fits, with which I had been afflicted for twenty years. I have not had one since I have been saved. I was saved last October, whom I first heard the evening light preached. My family are all saved and out of sectism, walking on the highway of holiness, redeemed from all sin. Pray for us. Your sister under the blood,

Ellen Riggle.

INSTANTLY HEALED.

Cortland, Jackson Co. Ind.

April 16, 1895.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of the Spirit to write my request. I know that God has answered my prayers time and again, and I believe in his healing power. I had female weakness for twenty-five years, and for twenty-two years of that time I had to wear a bandage for a support; and after I read one of your tracts titled “Nine Years an Invalid.” I threw my supporter away and put my trust in God to heal me; and I was healed immediately, and have felt no symptoms of the disease since. And I write this to the Glory of God. Praise his name for ever and ever!

I want all you dear saints to pray for my sinful husband, that he may be converted and sanctified; and pray for my son, that he may be saved and healed; he has been sick for some time,

I believe the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous person availeth much. Your sister in Christ,

Jennie Wilkerson.

Dear Saints of the Living God;

I am saved to the uttermost and kept each day from all sin. I have often proved him true to his promises both for soul and body. He has healed me of many afflictions including heart disease and choking, with which I had been afflicted for fifteen years. To God be all the glory. I am truly glad the pure gospel has been preached at this place and that I had a willing heart to accept it. I was saved last October and have been kept by his power ready to be revealed in the last time. Your sister,

Dear Saints: I do feel led of God to give in my testimony. I am praising God for salvation from sin with a constant victory in my soul. Surely we have much to praise God for. The Word says in everything give thanks. Truly we cannot praise God enough for what he has been doing for us. Surely God is a patient God for sparing my life while I was allowing the devil to whip me around. But praise God for the determination to serve him whatever it may cost. I want my every word and action to be to the glory of God. Pray for me. From your brother saved now,

F. J. Bixler.
