THE LORD HAS COME.

_____

Four hundred-years had slowly passed away,
Since dropped the curtain of prophetic day;
Now hushed each lip that glowed by heaven’s spark,
And men sat waiting, musing in the dark.

Will God return to this dark world no more?
Shall he not speak to men as when of yore
His Spirit came upon the ancient seers,
And spake his burning truth in human ears?

How long, O Lord our God, wilt thou forbear?
When shall the reign of him on earth appear,
In whom all nations shall indeed be blest,
And all thy Israel find eternal rest?

Where daily glowed the sacrificial fire,
And flowed the typic blood of God’s Messiah;
There faithful Anna waited night and day,
That Shiloh’s-coming earnestly to pray.

And good old Simeon’s eyes were growing dim
While looking for the mercy promised him;
And yet no answer Tent the silent heav’n,
No messenger of hope to them was given.

But even silence spake in solemn tone,
And darkness brooded hopes of David’s throne;
A deep forecast of something wonderful,
All nations of the earth now seemed to fill.

The day was spent, the setting sun had cast
His tints of crimson beauty on the West,
And once more sinking softly out of sight,
The holy land was wrapped in gloomy night.

And there were shepherds in the lonely plain,
Who, startled by a sweet celestial strain,
Arose, and lo! the angel of the Lord
Shone round about, and they were sore afraid.

He spake, and these his gracious words of love,
“Fear not, we bring good tidings from above;
Good news, good news of God’s redeeming grace,
Great joy to every soul of Adam’s race.

For unto you is born this very day,
A Savior, who is Christ, the living way;
Arise, go straightway, and behold the babe,
And ye shall find him in a manger laid.

But hark! a multitude of angels throng
The air, and chant the sweet redemption song;
All glory in the highest be to him
Who brings us peace on earth, good will to men.

Behold, ye happy mortals here below,
The wondrous gift of God we never knew;
Your lost and sad estate we saw indeed.
The curse of sin and guilt upon your head.

But until now we angels could not tell
How you’d escape the awful flames of hell:
We long desired to know, but never knew
How God would show his boundless love to you.

But O the mystery of love and grace to men
Is now revealed to all in Bethlehem;
What love, what mighty love! O can it be
That God would give his only Son for thee.

How great indeed must be that holy one,
Since angels hasten down from heaven’s throne:
And thus, with songs of rapture loud proclaim
The birth of him who comes in Jesus’ name.

But eighteen hundred years have passed away,
We stand upon the end of time to day;
Through all the age of God’s redeeming love,
Two things have been the great surprise above.

One wonder is that God so loved our race,
But greater the surprise that Heaven’s grace,
A human heart and will could e’er refuse,
And love divine so great, could e’er abuse.

Ten thousand wonders Christ on earth has wrought,
These two, the most exceed all human thought;
A soul redeemed, how changed how all renewed,
How raised from sin to heaven’s altitude.

This is a marvel in all human eyes,
And well may angels look with deep surprise;
But who can calculate the debt of woe,
The willful sinner unto God will owe.

High as Jehovah’s throne, and deep as hell,
The love of God in Christ can but foretell,
The retribution that a soul must win,
Who spurns such love and lives in open sin.

What do we with this babe of Bethlehem?
Behold the world can find no room for him;
Here Lord, be thine the chambers of my breast,
And on thy servant let thy blessing rest.

“THE unchangeable purpose of an unchangeable God.” — WEBSTER. Did God “purpose” that one should enjoy eternal happiness, and another endure eternal misery? Ans. “The Lord is * * * not willing that any should perish, but that al should come to repentance,” 2 Pet. 3:9. Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord God: and not that he should return from his ways and live? Ezek. 18:23. Some say, “What is to be will be: if am to be saved, I will be; if not there is no use trying,” basing their belief upon Rom. 9:15—18: For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. For the Scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout the earth. Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.

Now first of all, let me read Deut. 7:9, 10, and ascertain upon WHOM God will have mercy, and also WHOM God will HARDEN. “Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations. And repayeth them that hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hateth him, he will repay lim to his face.” “And shewing mercy to thousands of them that love him and keep his commandments.” Ex. 20:6. Pharaoh was disobedient and rebelled against God. Pharaoh hardened his heart. Ex. 8:15—32. God hardens the hearts of all who reject his word and refuse to walk in his commandments to day, as well as in Pharaoh’s time. That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 2 Thess. 2.

God is omniscient, and he knew rom the beginning who would repent, believe and obey him, and endure unto the end. “Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: calling a ravenous bird [Pharaoh was one] from the east, the man that executeth my counsel [the righteous] from a far country.” Isa. 46:10, 11. The names of the “elect” are “written in the book of life from the foundation of the world.” See Rev. 13:8 and 17:8. Elect, did I say? Yes: Peter says “elect according to the FOREKNOWLEDGE of God the Father.” 1 Pet. 1:2. “Pefore I formed thee in the belly I KNEW thee; and before thou earnest :orth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” Jer. 1:5. God knew that he would be true, “But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, and needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man. John 2:24, 25. For whom he did FOREKNOW, he also did PREDESTINATE. Rom. 8:29. Dear sinner, God knows before-hand whether you will accept his only begotten Son as your Savior, but if you refuse and reject him, remember that because God knew it from the beginning, will be no excuse in the great judgment day which is fast approaching, for he is calling even you. “Whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely.” Rev. 22. ‘‘Come unto me, ALL ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matt. 11. “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money, come ye; buy and eat: yea, come, buy wine and milk, without money and without price.” Isa. 55. Therefore, “Harden not your hearts as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness.” Paul said, “I have planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.” So then neither is he that planteth anything, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.” 1 Cor. 3. He said again, “So then it is not of him that willeth nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.” They might have planted and watered, yet all would have been in vain if God had not given the increase. We may will and run but all would be in vain were the Lord not very pitiful and of tender mercy. The Lord knew that Pharaoh had a rebellious heart, and he “raised him up” — “made thee to stand.” — EMPHATIC DIAGLOTT. In other words, he used him to shew his power in him, etc. If Pharaoh had repented as the Ninevites did [see Jonah 3] the Lord would have surely pardoned him.

Christ all in all.

_____

“I AM crucified with Christ; nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Gal. 2:20.

To be crucified means to be put to death. As Christ was put to death on the cross, so we are to be crucified to self and all the works of the devil. As Christ yielded himself to be put to death, so we must submit to die the death. As the death of Christ was real, so we must reckon ourselves dead indeed to all things that are not of God, every element in our nature that is contrary to the divine nature of Christ must, and can be eradicated from our entire being that Christ may be all,and in all. Now any thing short of an entire dethronement, eradication and annihilation of self is short of God’s eternal holiness. Self must be obliterated, put to death and buried that we can say with Paul, I am dead: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me. And if we are dead and nothing but Christ lives in us, then self will no more be seen, and nothing but the life of Christ will be manifested in all our mortal flesh.

It means much to be dead indeed so that in all our life, our conversation and in all our actions we will manifest nothing but Jesus. Dear ones, I do feel that there is great advancement to make on this line. If we wish to advance we must be where God can lead us; if we wish to see this world converted to God we must get where we can lift up Christ to the world more than ever, and where less — yea, nothing of self can be seen. Jesus says, If I be lifted up I will draw all men unto me. May God help us as ministers of God to lift up Jesus and keep self slain in the rear. Brethren, the time has come when we must count ourselves out, and Christ all. Too much self has been manifested; we have been doing too much, and have not let God do enough. May God help us all to cease trying to do what God must do and just let God do all; let him use us as instruments instead of us trying to use God. Dear ones, we must move forward; this world must hear of God’s salvation, and God must do the work. Oh let us one and all sink down into the perfect will of God in such a way that he can live through us, sing through us, preach through us, use us in any way he may choose, send us where he will that he alone may get the glory of all our life.

God cannot use us to any great extent until we are where he can use us at his will, and be willing to do anything however little or humiliating it may seem to us. We must be where he can send us to the ends of the earth, consecrated to stay in the darkest place of the earth all our life; any where or any thing for Jesus must be the motto of our heart. Again, we must count ourselves nothing, all we know, all we possess, all we are, nothing, utterly nothing. God help us to see that we amount to nothing and can do nothing. “Without me ye can do nothing,” says Jesus; let us remember it, dear ones, and from this time forth cease from our own labors and drop into the hands of God as a poor insignificant worm, and let him alone use in his own way to the salvation of souls. I must confess right here, that I have done altogether too much and lave not let God do his own work. I lave had such a zeal for the cause that I have undertaken too much in my own strength and thereby nearly lost my health; but glory be to God I now see that it is God that is to work in us to will and to do of his own good pleasure. I can see that my life has been nearly a failure by trying to do it all myself.

My dear brethren, we must lose all confidence in the flesh; we must not lean to our own understanding, but lean on God. If we are not careful we will be telling others what we have done, instead of what God has done; of what we have learned instead of what God has taught us; of how good we are instead of God’s holiness. Oh let us remember that all we know is what God taught us, all we are is what God. has made of us. Shame on the man or woman that would desire to be seen of men, or to receive glory of men! Let God be all, let him receive all honor and praise. Oh let us forget all that we have ever done, count it all loss, yea as dung, and as never before sink down into God that from henceforth we can lift up Christ alone to the world. Brethren, as the apostles and prophets preached and wrote as they were moved by the Holy Ghost so let us be filled, led, and used only as prompted and inspired of the Holy Ghost.

Now I have one petition to ask of every child of God who may read these lines: drop on your knees in fervent prayer to God for me that I may from henceforth be so filled with God that Christ may alone be lifted up to the world, and let every body pray for more of Christ, and less of self. Your brother,

W. J. Henry.

__________

REASONS FOR ABIDING IN CHRIST.

_____

And now little children, abide in him. 1 John 2:28. Here John tells those children of God to abide in him. Why should we abide in him? Because in him is no sin. 1 Jno. 3:5. So many people say they are children of God and claim they cannot live without sin. It is because they have not seen him, neither known him. John tells us to abide in him, and Jesus says, If a man abide not in me he is cast forth as a branch and is withered [or severed from me]. God help these poor souls to see that as long as they abide in Jesus no sin is done, but every sin that a man doeth is without the body. 1 Cor. 6:18. No one can be in the church of God and commit sin; for it has no sinners in it; it is without spot, and holy. Eph. 5:27.

But those professed Christians say we don’t want to get better than Paul was in the seventh chapter of Romans. Paul was showing the condition of those brethren who were only pardoned of their sins and who were yet carnal; and he condescends from the state of holiness and speaks after the manner of men because of the infirmity of their flesh, or the body of sin. Paul says in verse 24, “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? And in verse 25 he thanks Jesus Christ our Lord.

Now we see very clearly from the apostle’s talk in the seventh of Romans that he says he was carnal, and is trying to show them that to be carnally minded is death. “For to be carnally minded is death.” Rom. 8:6. But what are we to do to get rid of this body of death that Paul speaks about in Rom. 7:24? After we are justified by faith we have access into the standing grace, Rom. 5:2, where we can abide in him and not sin nor serve sin: knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Rom. 6:6. Here is where we get rid of all sin; when we are willing to have the old man put to death. But the false teachers of the devil say we cannot get away from the inured carnality. O what blindness! They shut up the kingdom of heaven against men and will not enter in nor suffer those who follow them to go in. They deny the power of God. Acts 1:8, and say we cannot receive the Holy Ghost in these last days. But Paul told us about them in 2 Tim. 3:5, that they would have a form of godliness, but would deny the power of God. They will not accept a full gospel which is the power of God unto salvation to all that will believe it. Rom. 1:16. They will not believe only what they can wrest, and thereby live in sin. “Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.” Jude 11. These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. Jude 19. This Scripture is fulfilled; for they say the Bible is all the Spirit there is, and all they want. But Paul says that the Lord is that Spirit. 2 Cor. 3:17. Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. Mat. 23:24. These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts. Jude 16. Having eyes full of adultery, and they cannot cease from sin. 2 Peter 2:14. But the true children of God serve him in holiness all the days of their lives. Luke 1:15.

Since Christ has redeemed us from all sin our body is his temple. Know ye not that ye are the temple, of God and the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God him will God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. 1 Cor. 3:16, 17. What! know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own. 1 Cor. 6:19. Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For we which live [in Christ] are always delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. 2 Cor. 4:10, 11. Now we see from the Scripture we are to be holy in soul, spirit and body. 1 Cor. 7:34. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly, and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. 2 Thes. 5:23, 24. Now if we cannot see from all this gospel, it is because it is hid; and if it be hid it is hid to those who are lost, in whom the God of this world [the devil] has blinded the minds of them which believe not. 2 Cor. 4:34. Take heed, ye professor, lest God sends you strong delusions to believe a lie and be damned. As old king Herod sought to destroy the young child Jesus, just so do the ministers of hell and of the devil seek to destroy the young child Jesus out of the heart of the new-born babe by telling them they cannot live without sin. Thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy [spiritual] life. Jer. 4:30. But if we walk in the light as he is in the light we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his [God’s] Son cleanseth us from all sin. 1 John 1:7. 1 Jno. 4:17. Titus 2:11, 12.

===========

ARE you going to be true to God during the coming year?

IT is one thing to know what God wants us to do, and another thing to go ahead and do what he commands.

GOD has great love for all who are tried, tempted, persecuted or afflicted, and desires to deliver them out of all their troubles; but he does not love to see them floundering about, doubting his Word.

WHEN you call upon God earnestly for an increase of faith, humility, or any of the graces of the Spirit, you need not be surprised when he answeres in an entirely different manner from that which you were expecting. Do not think him an unjust God if he sees fit to let you get where it is exercise faith or die, or meet with misfortune or something of the kind, when he is only giving you a chance to know of a truth that he has answered your prayer, and wants you to use the faith he has given you.

PRAYERS ANSWERED.

When I wrote to you to pray for my healing, God did wonderfully heal me. Praise his holy name! I do realize it is sweet to trust in Jesus.

Mrs. M. P. Elam.

I sent in a request for the saints at the assembly last fall to pray for the healing of my stomach, and the Lord answered prayer and healed me. I had a test or trial of my faith afterward, but knowing that the saints have prevailing prayer, I resisted Satan and found God true to his word and am all right now. Bless his name!

Mrs. P. G. Elwood.

THE PUBLISHING WORK.

_____

As the old year passes away and we enter upon the labors of a new year, in the work of the Lord, our souls are filled with much gratitude to God for his wonderful goodness and blessings of love bestowed upon his children. It is beyond our power to give full expression to the abundant riches of his grace bestowed upon those who have consecrated all to follow Jesus. We truly give praise unto his name for his blessings upon the publishing work here. And perhaps it would be pleasing to God and edifying to his children to speak of a few things concerning the work.

The Lord has furnished a good company of consecrated workers for each department of the work. Seven years ago the Trumpet family consisted of seven persons, and now it numbers between thirty and forty busy workers for the Lord, who give their whole time to his service without charge or salary. We have had a continual rush of work from the beginning to the close of the year, and the Lord has enabled us to send out tracts and papers, etc., by the hundred thousand for distribution to hungry souls, and seed has been sown by all waters. Many thousand have been sent to Europe and other foreign lands. People in India, Africa, China, Japan, South America and the islands of the sea, are now beginning to read and regularly receive the Trumpet and other literature sent out from this place. From letters received from various places in foreign countries we find the people are spiritually starving for the want of hearing of the pure word of God. During the past year the Lord has enabled us to issue a number of new tracts on various subjects, and a pocket edition of “Echoes from Glory,” words only, also a word edition of German songs, and a number of German tracts and books. He has also raised up a German editor, and enabled us to now begin the publication of a German paper — “EVANGELIUMS POSAUNE,” for which we give God much praise and glory. A word edition of Spanish songs has been recently published.

The Lord has wonderfully shown his favors and approval upon the work: while croakers and wicked men have howled against it, he has only increased the volleys of truth against the strongholds of Satan, and has enabled us greatly to lessen the office indebtedness, and given us the promise that the whole indebtedness shall be removed.

Three years ago the Lord made known by his Spirit that an advance of the publishing work was near at hand. Our type was nearly worn out, and we needed about $200 to buy new type. As we were then in debt and had several large bills to pay, we were at a loss to know what to do regarding the matter. After fasting and praying over the matter for two days, and that the Lord would clear away some of these bills, we received the witness that he was moving in the matter. The next morning I met a man to whom we owed $98.00, which he had not been expecting payment for two weeks yet, but he said he had a payment to make that day and asked if we could help him with the amount due him. Having only about $15.00 in my pocket and the promise of God for the remainder, I told him I would try and pay him the full amount that afternoon. On going to the post office there was a letter from a man who lived about a thousand miles away, whom the Lord had been talking to about the spreading of the gospel work, who sent $85.00 to be used to the glory of God. The bill was paid with much thankfulness to God. The type was ordered, and the Lord showed us that the increase of the work so near upon us could not be accomplished with our old press, as it was getting worn and was too slow motion. After praying over the matter Bro. Warner and myself felt led to go to Chicago in the name of the Lord and purchase the machinery needed. Having only a few dollars in cash, and no money in the bank to rely on, we followed the directions of the Spirit of the Lord, selected the machinery to the amount of over two thousand dollars. The salesman told us their terms was half cash when the machinery was set up in our office, the remainder in ninety days, and asked if that was satisfactory with us. Having been looking earnestly to the Lord for guidance, we replied that it was all right. They offered a large discount for a cash payment of the whole amount, and wrote up the contract in that way, and if we took their sample press in Chicago they would charge us $55.00, which they had paid out for shipping and setting up of machinery, and if we had one shipped from the manufacturers the $55.00 would be deducted from the contract.

After our return home we concluded to have them send us one direct from the factory, thus saving considerable freight. It was almost one month before the machinery arrived and was ready for work. In the mean time God was moving many hearts to send in their mites to help along the work; subscriptions for the paper and sale of books increased wonderfully, and the Lord enabled us to borrow seven hundred dollars, which arrived a day or two before the time of payment, as we felt God wanted us to borrow enough to pay the whole amount. We were yet lacking considerable money of having the whole amount. Finally the day of settlement came and we hardly dared count the money, but was positive that we had almost enough if the firm had deducted the fifty-five dollars as they had agreed.

That morning on my way to the bank, instead of counting the money, I said, “O Lord, increase it.” Upon arrival at the bank and making inquiry the banker stated that he had received no notice to deduct anything from the account, and the papers had been in his possession for several days, and asked what we would do about it. Knowing that God was directing the business, I told the banker that we would go ahead and transact the business and perhaps he would yet receive the notice. After looking over the papers a few minutes and at the same time reminding God of his promises and considering them true in this case, we were just about ready to begin counting out the money when a letter was handed the banker, stating, “Deduct $55.00 from the GOSPEL TRUMPET account,” Although it was a test of faith, yet God did not fail us, and to him we give all the glory. We had enough to pay the bill and a few dollars left.

We speak of this only for the glory of God and the strengthening of the faith of others, although this is only one of the multitude of tests of faith which we have had. A faith work cannot be carried on without an abundance of chances to have tests of faith. Many times has our faith been tested almost to the utmost, but the Lord always got glory out of it in some way.

The press has been at work for the Lord, now almost three years, and yet there is a debt of five hundred dollars unpaid of the money borrowed, which will be due in a few weeks. Besides this there are several hundred dollars due on paper, etc. Some may say, If you have faith why do you not ask God to get you out of debt? Well, we received the promise of that long ago, but in praying over the matter the Lord showed us that the responsibility of furnishing the means for paying these debts and spreading the gospel literature from this place does not all rest upon us alone, but upon the members of the body of Christ, the church, and that it was our duty to lay the matter before them so they could realize their responsibility, and see that God holds each one of his children to help in preaching the gospel according to their ability as he has prospered them. There is a call for gospel literature everywhere, and for want of means to buy paper, machinery, pay postage, etc., the demand is far more than we can supply. Could the readers of the Trumpet only shoulder the responsibilities with a feeling for hungry and perishing souls, and feel the weight and necessities of the work here as it really is, for only five minutes time, within twenty-four hours the office would be out of debt and arrangements made for the advance of the work a hundred fold.

OUR PRESENT NEEDS.

We are just at the present time in need of more stereotype machinery to the amount of about two hundred dollars, and especially do we need a paper folder, which will cost over $800. As we now publish three papers and do a great amount of book and tract work, this would be a grand missionary worker in the office, and take the place of other workers who could give their time to setting type and making tracts and books, and would be a great move towards a book-bindery outfit.

Now a few words concerning the property, and who has the ownership of the same. Money, etc., sent in here is put to preaching the gospel immediately. The increase of the office does not go into the hands of any member of the firm to be used for themselves, and should there be any change made in the firm it does not affect what others have invested by way of donations, as a member of the firm from any cause leaving can only withdraw the amount invested by themselves as stock, and even what they themselves have donated cannot be withdrawn, nor anything collected for wages. Here we give some of the articles of agreement of the firm:

1st. We all freely give our entire labor in the publishing work without charge or salary, save our food and raiment.

2d. All income by the publishing business shall be used in published and sending out other matter, and no part thereof shall be placed to the stock of any member of the firm.

3d. All donations made to this office by which the vaination of the same is increased, either by the addition of machinery or office improvements, shall be held only in trust by the firm, and no part of the same shall be placed to the individual stock of any member, or in any way become personal property.

4th. In case of the withdrawal, or removal by death of any member of this publishing company, neither he (nor she), his (nor her) heirs, nor assignees shall be allowed to draw out of the same anything over and above the amount put into the business by himself (or herself). And no interest shall be allowed upon the summit he (or she) may have invested.

5th. Anyone desiring to deed, will or bequeath property to be used in spreading the pure gospel can have the business transacted in the name of the Gospel Trumpet Publishing Company. Grand Junction. Mich., in trust of the business manager, or the publishers and their successors.

This ought to stop the mouths of croakers and such as have been trying to hinder the prosperity of the work by crying out, “Some one is getting rich at the Trumpet office.” It leaves without excuse those who have felt God moving them to aid in the rescue of souls and have been trying to hide behind the same cry or excuse. It ought to make every brother and sister, whether at home or in the gospel field, feel the same interest in this work as those who are in the work here.

Many have been moved by the Spirit of the Lord to help along the gospel work and have backslidden because they would not obey. Some expect a portion of their property to be used for God after their death. Better then than never, but the Lord may come and declare the end of time, and find such with their property, as it were, wrapped up in a napkin, and they be numbered among the “unprofitable servants,” when they might have been instrumental in saving many souls. We know of a man who was anxious that some of his money should be used in saving souls after he was dead and gone, and willed one thousand dollars for that purpose, to be held in trust and used by certain brethren in that way. Shortly afterward he died, his unsaved children broke the will and used the money, and no souls were saved by the use of it. Had he even given his note made payable at his death it would have been better.

During the year many have visited our home and the Home at the camp ground, some for spiritual help, others for the healing of their bodies and light on the word of God, and the Lord has saved and healed many by his power through faith and prayer.

We are receiving from 500 to 800 letters a week, and now have about 500 questions in our question box that remain unanswered for want of time.

Our postage last month was over $158.00

Many have written in for prayers,

Page 3

which requests were remembered at the throne of grace, but we are often unable to answer the letters, yet we are always glad to hear from the dear ones. The requests for prayer sent by telegram are always promptly attended to.

Dear ones, we need your prayers at all times, that God may give us the needed grace and wisdom for the work to which he has called us. Also remember Bro. Hahn, the German editor. We wish you all a glad New Year with the rich blessings of God in your souls. Yours in Him,

E. E. Byrum.

Dear Saints: We just closed a five week’s meeting near McKinley with victory. Twenty-one consecrations for pardon and sanctification; nearly all received what they came for. Many others won to the truth, and hope will give up all to Jesus soon. On Monday, the 17th, eight were buried with Christ in baptism. Meeting closed with a glorious ordinance meeting in which twenty-seven took part. Truly, God did witness the obeying of his commandments. We start on Monday next for Burns, Okla., the Lord willing, to pitch battle in the name of King Jesus. Dear saints, pray much for us. Yours, sanctified wholly, all given up to Jesus,

Denver, Ark., Dec. 20, 1894. To all the Saints, Greeting: May God’s richest blessings be with you all. Amen. We are praising the dear Lord for salvation that keeps us ever sweet in our souls and ever willing to do his blessed will. We left the Territory one month ago and came by way of Sulphur Springs, Ark. Had a glorious meeting there for the Lord and a real seed-sowing time. From there we went to Nebo, Ark. and spent a few days with the saints there. Visited dear Sister M. Setzer, who was lately healed after going on crutches most all her life. But praise God, she has thrown them away and is going without them. The people say it is wonderful. The true light was never preached there in its fulness till Bro. Murphy preached there this fall, during which time Bro. Wickson, who was formerly a Methodist preacher, was completely settled down on a straight Bibleline for God. Will commence meeting here to night and stay as long as the Lord wills.

North Platte, Neb., Dec. 21, 1894.

Dear Saints: Since our last report there has been several saved and some baptized, and there are more to follow. The Lord has used us in sowing the precious seed in different places in the country round about here. We held a meeting thirty miles north of here about one week and there were several consecrations, and others raised their hands for prayer. And seventeen miles south of here the Lord has a few that are out of sectism. The devil has tried almost every conceivable plan to get us away from North Platte and destroy the work of God here; but praise the Lord, the truth has come to stay, and the Lord has a blessed church here. The devil finally resorted to the law of the land and swore a lie against us, thinking that would defeat the work of God here; but, thank God! it was all to no avail, and we have many more friends now than we had before. Bro. Masters and wife will return to Fairbury. Neb. to day. Wife and I will remain here. Your brother and sister and companions in tribulation in the kingdom and patience of Jesus,

Rising Sun. O., Dec. 21, 1894.

To all the Dear Saints of God, Greeting in the Name of Jesus: We are glad to report to you all that Jesus saves, keeps and satisfies us just now, and our souls are abounding in his love. Praise his dear name! After leaving the Grand Junction assembly, we went to Walkerton, Ind. Commenced meeting in the saints’ meeting house near Teegarden. This meeting was truly a glorious feast to our souls. There were several consecrations, quite a number healed, and the church was much strengthened and edified. To God be all the glory. Closed this meeting Sunday night, Nov. 5th. Started to Weston, O. Nov. 6th. Stopped at Garrett, Ind and held a few meetings, which were much blessed of God. Arrived at Weston Nov. 8th, commenced meeting the same night, continued almost two weeks. There was much opposition at this place, not many came out on account of bad weather; nevertheless, there was a good work done, and God wonderfully blessed our souls in holding up the real truth to the people. Several consecrated for pardon, and a few for sanctification. The church was much strengthened and built up in the “faith once delivered unto the saints.” Praise the Lord! Commenced meeting in Rising Sun, O. Wednesday, Nov. 28th, continued two weeks. The Lord wonderfully blessed his word and much prejudice was removed. We had very precious children’s meetings in this place. The children were much interested and several were really saved. Praises be to our God! We have just closed a few day’s meeting in the Roush neighborhood. We are on our way East. Any one desiring us to hold meetings in Pennsylvania, New York, or anywhere in the East please write to us. We thank all the dear ones who so kindly ministered to our wants. We remain your brother and sisters in the Lord, saved to the uttermost. Address us at Grand Junction, Mich.

Dear Brethren: This morning finds us rejoicing and praising God for full and complete salvation. It has been along time since I wrote to the Trumpet; but glory to Jesus he has kept us by his mighty power each day, and we have been laboring for King Jesus all the time. After the tabernacle meeting at Kirwin, wife and I went in the country about seven miles north-west and held two week’s meeting in a school house; had a good attendance and interest; two consecrations for sanctification. Then from there went to Agra and held nine days meeting; had large congregations and the people were interested, and a great many acknowledged the truth. One justified, and two sanctified and others under conviction. At the close of the meeting we went to the Solamon River and there were four buried with Christ in baptism. From there went two miles north of Kensington in Bro. Swail’s neighborhood and held nine day’s meeting in a school house. The saints from Cedar Forks school house came up and helped us, and we had some glorious meetings. Praise the Lord! there were four consecrations, two justified and two sanctified, and the saints strengthened. On Sunday the 16th the saints met at Bro. Swail’s house to have an ordinance meeting. Nineteen were present that took part in washing the saint’s feet, and the Lord’s supper, seven of which were new-born babes. Sunday night the meeting closed with conviction on the people, but the school board would not let us have the house any longer. On Monday we went to the river again about fourteen miles, and three more were baptized. And this morning we came here to visit the church. The Lord has a little congregation established west of Agra, and if any of God’s messengers go through there, stop and feed the flock, and you will be gladly received. To morrow morning we start for Missouri. Direct us at Agra, Kan., or Nishnabotna, Mo. Pray for us. Yours, saved and sanctified,

Michael Stover, Jr. and Wife.

NEWS FROM NEW YORK.

_____

Hillburn, N. Y., Dec. 12, 1894.

Gospel Trumpet Pub. Co.

Dear Friends of Jesus: I received your tracts and sample of your paper for which, thanks. They proved to be just what I wanted. I praise God that he is raising up a holy people.

I would like to tell you of the work husband and I are doing for the Master. About five years ago we were called into the work. We left home, money and friends to go out after souls. We were ignorant, as far as religious work was concerned, and had not the knowledge of sanctification; but God used us and we had many calls in different churches.

After a while we became very hungry for righteousness, sought and obtained sanctification through Christ. At the same time we took Christ for our healer, although not sick; still we decided we would have a whole Christ and would never take medicines. Of course, away went tobacco, tea, coffee, rich food, and all regard for the fashions of the world. Our attention was brought to the study of the coming of Christ, and we were led to believe by the Holy Ghost that we were now living in the latter days, and Christ’s speedy coming was made precious to us. We also felt it our duty to cry out against vice and sin in the churches (sects). As you may suppose, our calls among them dropped off. Then we felt God wanted us in a different work. We were led to Patterson, N. J., a large and wicked city, and my husband and I engaged in rescue mission work, and a glorious work was accomplished. We fed and lodged as many as two hundred men at a time. We saw drunkards reclaimed and gloriously saved. After two years, Mr. Frey saw the need of a mission where he could preach healing, sanctification and the coming of the Lord, also rescue young men before they sank to degradation. God soon opened the way for another mission in that city, and men with consecrated money placed the means in his hands to go forth. The result is that now he has another mission where just the pure holy gospel is preached, no sleeping or eating department. People are leaving their cold, dead churches (sects) and coming to the mission, no sects acknowledged, free to all.

Husband and I had never been parted in the work, we were side by side. Soon, however, there came a cry from hungry souls in Hillburn, N. Y., sixteen miles from our home in Patterson. People could not worship in the cold churches (sects), would we come and have charge of an undenominational work. Husband had his hands full, so he said, Wife, you must go. I felt God was calling me, and I went. Oh, brethren, how I do praise God for the mighty work he is doing here. Men and women are giving up all for Christ, and the whole valley is awakened. The people lay their money and all on the altar, and God is wonderfully blessing us. I go home once a week. Husband and I are willing to be apart for Jesus’ sake. He comes up often and speaks for us, and I, likewise, speak at his mission. Oh it is a blessed life to live! Glory to Jesus!

After I took Christ as my healer, I was taken terribly sick, never was so sick. We called a doctor to see what the trouble was, and I was told I would be an invalid for a long time. But I called for the elders, was anointed with oil according to James 5:14, 15, got up at once and went down to my meeting and testified to God’s healing power, and have been working on ever since. Before I was healed I could not walk across the floor. Glory to God! I am all for Jesus, and I want him to have all the glory, bless his name! Oh how my heart aches for those who through the Trumpet plead for some one to come and preach the pure gospel to them. I hope God will raise up men and women from our missions who will go out and help them. Yours till Jesus comes,

May E. Frey.

I feel led of the Lord to write a testimony to the Trumpet. Praise the Lord for a full and free salvation that is able to save us and keep us saved from sin and sinning. John 15:4. Abide in me, and I in you. Praise the Lord for the abiding in Christ. Bless his holy name for abiding in his saints. I can truly say I am abiding in my blessed Savior, and he reigns in my soul. Whosoever is born of God sinneth not. But he that is begotten of God keepeth himself (yes, he keepeth himself by ever trusting his blessed Master), and that wicked one toucheth him not. We are living under the blood of Jesus that can make whiter than snow.

Abel and Ann. Sumner.

Dear Saints of God: May the blessings of God abide with you. Amen. This morning finds us saved, sanctified and standing on the promises of God. It is now about three years since we first heard the true gospel preached, and it found me an ungodly professor, and husband a sinner. But praise God, we were, willing to walk out into the light when it came to us. We have tasted of both the joys and the chastenings of the Lord, and found both to be profitable. There is a large field for work here. Should any of God’s anointed ones be led to come here and labor with us, we believe a good work could be done. Pray that we may be kept humble and doing the whole will of God. Your brother and sister, saved and kept,

Chas. and B. Hatch.

Dear Saints: I feel that it would be to the glory of God to write my testimony. I am praising the Lord for the victory he has given me in my soul. I was brought up by Lutheran parents. I was comfirmed when sixteen years old and taken in as a full member of that sect, and not realizing my lost condition I continued there four years, living in sin, and yet was a member of good standing. While attending some meetings I became convicted, for which I praise God. I was truly converted to God and received the evidence of my sins pardoned by the witness of the Spirit of God. And by walking in the light and studying the Word I soon felt the need of cleansing from all sin. I received some light but did not know how to consecrate.

I continued in an up and down condition until last summer when I heard the evening light preached by a brother. I did not get the experience of the truth then but received it in theory. I felt the Lord wanted me out working for souls, but I failed to get the proper anointing. But glory be to Jesus! his promises are sure. The Lord said that the “yokes should be destroyed because of the anointing.” It is true I feel free in my soul, although I need more anointing yet. But praise God! I mean to do God’s will as he reveals it to me. The Lord blesses me in doing duty. There is a great need of consecrated service here. I would be glad if some one of God’s holy ministers would come to hold meetings, both in Sioux City and out in the country. I will help all I can: if some one needs help to sing and hold meetings I am consecrated to do God’s will. I would like to be with some older worker for awhile. Any one wishing to write to me address 1003 Court St., Sioux City, Iowa. Pray for me that God will anoint my soul and make me useful in his service. Your brother out of sect and in the one body,

Emil Kreutz.

Deceived.

_____

I AM praising God for a full salvation, saved and under the blood. Praise his dear name! While we look out upon the vast professing multitudes our hearts are stirred within us: we are pained within our souls to see or think what will be the final destiny of the deceived and deceivers, who cannot stand at the judgment. John says, 2d Epistle 1:19, Whosoever transgresseth and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ he hath both the Father and the Son. Praise his holy name forever! My soul doth magnify the Lord.

Now, dear ones, you that have heard the pure Word of God in all its purity, how can you stand in Babylon and claim an experience of salvation? Mockers, as Jude calls them, come around and make the simple believe that they held a conference at Jerusalem and sent ministers forth to preach the gospel, and Paul went to conference to receive his commission to preach. Truly such must be deficient of the Spirit for he leads into all truth. Praise God for the Word and the Spirit to interpret the same! Paul asserts in the 1st chap, of Galations that he went up to Jerusalem by revelation to communicate that gospel which he preached among the Gentiles. These were those of reputation, not to a board of bishops. For there were some that seemed to be somewhat in conference, but Paul said that added nothing to us.

Ungodly prophets are boasting throughout this country of the great things God has done for them literally; such as, built literal fires for them in times of need, sent down rain from heaven, etc. “Be not deceived. God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. We will let Jude speak against such ungodliness and deceivers. Jude 16— 18. These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts and their mouth speaking great swelling words, having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage. But, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, how that they told you there should be mockers in the last time who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. Read 19th verse. My God, what do these Scriptures mean? Are we in the end of time? Have mercy, Lord, that the deceived may see what their final doom will be. We feel sorrow in our hearts when those that would enter we see are deceived. After hearing the truth then running from one sect to another. If these lines come to the notice of those once free in Christ and the light you once endorsed is now darkness, what is the trouble? Deceived! deceived!!

One sister said the way she had the witness that the saints were wrong, was that when the F. M. preacher preached against the saints, God would come in power and bless the preacher and the congregation. Such deception! such corruption!! Where shall it end? John says in Rev. 20:15, And whosoever was not found in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Praise God for Bible victory! Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor to him, for the marriage of the Lamb is come and his wife hath made herself ready. Our hearts feel far more than we can possibly speak by pen, and we are continually holding on to God who answers prayer. Our earnest desire is to see our own dear ones saved from sin and deception and have the mind of Christ. May the grace of God which bringeth salvation rest and abide with the household of God. Yours saved and under the blood, in the one body,

C. F. Wright.

__________

QUESTION.

_____

What does Paul mean in 1 Cor. 15:29? “Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead raise not at all; why are they then baptized for the dead.” Please explain in the TRUMPET. Your sister,

Susan H. Carter.

There is but one explanation of this text. That is this: First, Baptism means immersion, and nothing else was practiced in the primitive church. As clearly seen in Rom. 6:4, and Col. 2:12, it was a burial. The doctrinal import of the ordinance is this: First, in its observance the child of God confesses his faith in the burial and resurrection of Christ, and in our literal resurrection through him. Second, he testifies by that burial of his body beneath the water, that he too is dead with Christ, that his “old man is crucified.” and the “body of sin” put off. And as he merges from the symbolic grave he testifies to all that he is not only “dead indeed to sin,” but also has risen from spiritual death, into the life of Christ. But as the apostle reasons, if there be no literal resurrection from the dead, there were nothing corresponding with the symbolic lesson contained in the ordinance. “Why are they then baptized for the dead?” namely, why perform a rite which expresses our faith in the resurrection from the dead, if there be no such resurrection?” Baptized for the dead,” simply means in reference to the dead; namely, baptized because of our coming resurrection from the dead.

After saying that this is the most difficult passage in the New Testament, and quoting Matt. 20:22. 25: Mark 10:38; Luke 12:50, where suffering and martyrdom are represented by immersion, he sums up the apostle’s meaning as follows: If there be no resurrection of the dead, those who in becoming Christians, expose themselves to all manner of privations, crosses, severe sufferings, and a violent death, can have no reward, nor any motive sufficient to induce them to expose themselves to such miseries. But as they received baptism as an emblem of death in voluntarily going under the water, so they received it as an emblem of the resurrection unto eternal life, in coming up out of the water: thus they are baptized for the dead, in perfect faith of the resurrection. The three following verses seem to confirm this sense.” (See note in Emphatic Diaglott.)

Let it be remembered that Clark endeavors to sustain sprinkling and pouring for baptism in other places, but after all that catering to the creed of Methodism, he here confesses that in the faith once delivered to the saints, baptism was an immersion, a symbolic burial. In the light of the Scriptures throughout, and the leadings of the Spirit of God, we are well assured that the above explanation of the difficult text is correct.

Dear Saints of God: I will write my testimony for the first time. I was born of God about twenty-eight years ago. and never heard the evening light preached, but got a few tracts from a friend, which gave me some light on the sin of tobacco, which I put away by the help of God. I do feel like praising his holy name that he is able to remove our bad appetites and keep us saved in him. Oh I do praise God for the gift of his Son. that we through him might live. Pray for me that I too may be wholly sanctified. Your brother, freely justified, and kept free from all sects.

Dear Saints: I am sweetly saved and kept by God’s power, both soul and body, I believe it will be f.. God’s glory for me to give my testimony, what God did for my body. In 1893, June 20. God healed my body after being afflicted 12 years, and having thirty-three different doctors work on me. I had a tumor that had 46 pounds of matter taken from it at once. I became a morphine eater, could-use 25 cents worth a day, and God in answer to prayer healed me, and I got right up. I weighed just ninety pounds when I got up: now I weigh one hundred and fifty pounds, and do my house work and work in the shop with my husband every day, and am fifty years old. Praise his holy name! I want you all to pray for me. Your sister saved to the uttermost,

Dear Saints: I have been thinking some time about writing to the Trumpet. I thank God for a present salvation that keeps me saved continually by abiding in his Word. Bless his holy name! There are just two kingdoms, and we belong to the one or the other, and just one sin takes us out of God’s kingdom. If we have this old carnal nature removed that we inherited by Adam’s transgression, it is very easy to live in God’s kingdom. I praise God for the Holy Ghost to lead and direct me into all truth. I was afflicted a long time with heart disease and the good Lord showed me I should obey the Word. Two years ago last May I was anointed and the prayer of faith went up and God instantly healed me. Praise his holy name! My home is welcome for the children of God when they pass by this way. I would like preaching when we can have the school house. They need the pure gospel here. Your sister, first pure and then tried,

Dear Saints: I am rejoicing with a peace that passeth understanding a peace the world cannot give; it is only received in and through my crucified Redeemer. Glory to his name! He has pardoned all of my sins (transgressions) and sanctifies and makes me meet for his use. He has healed my poor body as well as my soul. I have been in this way for thirteen years; I am nearly sixty; I am very feeble. I ask the prayers of Gods people. Though I be poor in this world’s goods, my Father in heaven is rich. I was a tobacco slave and drank whiskey. I was a child of the devil. After I was saved I joined the Baptist sect, but after two years I left it. God let me know I was born of his Spirit and my name was written in the Lamb’s book of life. I find abundance of soul-food in the GOSPEL TRUMPET. May trod bless and keep it clean and radical in holiness. I can but bid it God speed. Your brother saved and washed in the blood.

Dear Brother Byrum: I thank God for all his dealings with me. Bless his name! I now wish to tell you how wonderfully good God has been to me since I last saw you. I came home feeling as though there was a cloud over me. I did not know why and I prayed God to show me; then one day it came to mind I should look at your book. “Divine Healing of Soul and Body,” and I commenced to read about sanctification, and I sent up a short prayer to the Lord to sanctify me, and it came like a flood in an instant. Glory to his name for ever! Oh I praise God for his wonderful blessings; he has truly beer good to me, his unworthy child, and may I ever live true to him ami serve him as he gives me strength. I had been seeking and praying for it a long time, but did not attain it till then, but he does it all in his own good time. Bless his name!

But I still have a blessing to ask and I think he will grant it all. I am not well yet. I wish I could have hands laid on me for my healing, but there is no one here to do it. The Lord has given me strength each day to do my necessary work, as I live it a little house by myself. I have … constant trouble in my stomach. The nerve on the left side of my body is so badly affected that noise or anything will set me in severe pain. The Lord knows all about it and is just as able to remove one thing as the other. Please pray for me that the Lord will touch me with his divine power and remove it all, as he in his wisdom sees best, not all for my sake, but for the glory of God. Your sister in Jesus.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of God to write my testimony for the first time and for the glory of the Lord. I do praise God for a salvation that saves from all sin and gives me victory in my soul, and a peace that the world cannot give or take away. Praise the Lord!

Dear ones ever since I have been saved. I have had such a hungering and thirsting after righteousness. I went from place to place, but could not find what I was seeking for, until about eight years ago, I was led to the Salvation Army, and went down for a clean heart as they call it, and I got real Bible salvation, and lived no to all th…ght that I had. I accepted the Lord as the healer of my body. I thought I was sanctified. I went on for live six years, and then the Lord began to call me out of that great sect. I could not understand then, but since God has called me into this evening light. I can see so plain that God in his great love wanted me to come out of Babylon. But I thought. It I leave this place where shall I go? I had begun to feel there was something lacking in the meetings. I did not know what to do, thinking that was the most spiritual place that I could go to. But the Lord knew all about me, ..st what I thought, so he brought me out his own way. Truly he brought me by a way that I knew not. Praise his body name forever!

I or some time before that, I had been to some meetings called the Second Advent, and I thought that was … what I wanted to draw me ..ater to God, and by going to them meetings, I should live nearer to God. So I scarcely ever missed a meetings, rain or sunshine, I would go. But instead of growing in grace as I thought, I found I began to love ground, I could not make it out. So I began to pray the Lord to send holy men along; I did not know where they would come from, but the Lord knew my heart, and my longing to be right, and praise his holy same, he dear Lord heard my prayer and sent the dear brothers and sisters from America. And I heard them, and from the first I knew they were dear men and women of God, although I could not understand at first. I was so mixed up in the Second Advent preaching I thought they would preach about the second coming of Christ, and because they did not. I thought they did not believe in it. And when I asked them above it they told me I was wrong, I could not see it, then the judgments had to be laid to the line, and righteousness to the plummet, and the hail sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters overflow the hiding places, and I could see. Read Isaiah 38:16.

Praise God! the dear Lord gave me several more texts. One was Deut. 18:22, and I could see where I had done wrong. I had gone into the Second Advent without trying the spirits whether they were of God. 1 John 4. Oh, dear ones, I had to let it all go before the Lord could do anything with me. If this comes into the hands of any one that is ..d up with this Second Advent teaching you will have to let all go, and began at the bottom. I had to, and when I was willing to let all go, thee the dear Lord saved my soul, after..ard sanctified my nature: and heats my body continually. Praise his holy nature? I am clear, out in the evening light. Praise the Lord! I ask the prayers of all the saints of God, that I may be kept faithful to the end, and that my dear husband with the rest of my family may be stand. Your sister kept by the mighty power of God.

Isabella Smith.
