A Million Souls In ’92.

_____

(A MISSIONARY HYMN)

_____

“Ask largely.” “Whatsoever things ye desire when ye pray, believe that ye receive, and ye shall have.” — Mark 11:24.

_____

Come brethren, all, in phalanx strong,
And let us push the battle through;
Come save with means,and prayer, and song,
A million souls in ninety-two.

Chorus.
A mill . . . . . . . . . . ion souls In ninety-two,
Bass. A million souls in ninety-two, a million souls in ninety-two,
A mill. . . . . . . . . . ion souls in ninety-two;
Bass. A million souls, a million souls, a million souls in ninety-two,
A mill . . . . . . . . . . ion souls in ninety-two,
Bass. A million prayers, a million souls, a million souls in ninety-two;
I’ll rescue all I can; . . . . . . . . . . Will you?
Bass. I’ll rescue all I can; * Will you? Will you? Will you? Will you?

The awful giant of despair,
Doth every mortal soul pursue;
Hence we must win by faith and prayer,
A million souls in ninety-two.

Come join the holy cavalry,
And let each one their strength renew:
For Christ has won the victory, —
A million souls in ninety-two.

In Jesus’ name we’ll all agree
To rally strength, and power anew;
And press the strong and urgent plea, —
A million souls in ninety-two.

If we’d the victory all achieve,
And gather in the precious “few,”
We must invade sin’s ranks and save
A million souls in ninety-two.

Forsake the +issues of the past,
This present one is surely true;
The question of importance, vast, —
A million souls in ninety-two.

The proposition now has come,
A very urgent call for you
To go at once, and help to win
A million souls in ninety-two.

God shows your duty, lead the way;
Oh, what, my brethren, will you do?
’’I will,” a hero rise and say;
A million souls in ninety-two.

Oh, when the harvest time has come,
And we shall have a grand review,
You’ll not regret your help to cast
The seeds for souls in ninety-two.

How long, oh, God of mercy, power,
Shall sinful victims stalk below?
Thou canst requite them all this hour,
And thus rebellion overthrow.

REDEMPTION.

_____

BLESSED be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people. — Luke 7:68. REDEEM means to purchase back; to ransom. Man was first created in God’s own image. Gen. 1:27. But by transgression he fell from this state, and the devil then planted within his heart another nature or plant, even the carnal mind, which is not subject to the law of God. Rom. 8:7. Man was in a lost condition, no longer in the favor of God, but filled with unrighteousness and continually rebelling against God. The thoughts of his heart were only evil continually. Gen. 6:5. Through the love and longsuffering of God and the pity he had for poor fallen and degraded humanity, he sent Jesus as a savior, as a redeemer to save us from our sins. Matt. 1:21. He died upon the cross, yea he suffered without the gate to sanctify the people with his own blood. Heb. 13:12. Listen, “For ye are bought with a price.” — 1 Cor. 6:20. O glory hallelujah! the Redeemer has come and purchased us back, paid the price for our redemption, even the precious blood of Jesus that cleanses from all sin and brings us back to the plane or same image from which man fell. Let us notice the garden of Eden [delight], where man dwelt in his holy state: it was watered by four rivers: the first, Pison; second, Gihon; third, Hiddekel; and the fourth, Euphrates. It took these four to make the place complete.

Pison, the first, signifies a changing or doubling. When a sinner comes to God his desire is a change of life. Tired of the old life, he wants a new one, and he repents, asks for the same, and the Lord pardons the same and he receives the spirit of adoption, whereby he cries, Abba, Father. Now he has the mind of Christ, also the carnal mind, planted by Satan; so we see the doubling. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners [repent, stop sinning and have your actual transgressions blotted out by the washing of regeneration], and purify your hearts, ye double minded [you that have been born anew, or made alive and have the two minds]. — Jas. 4:8. Present your bodies a living sacrifice, Rom. 12:1, and have God to extract or cleanse out this carnal nature from your heart, and have nothing but the mind of Christ.

Gihon, the second signifies the valley of grace. God giveth grace to the humble. 1 Pet. 5:5. By humbling ourselves and calling on God for mercy he forgives our sins and places us in the grace or favor of God. Being justified by faith we have peace with God. Rom. 5:1.

Hiddekel, the third, signifies a sharp word or voice. For the word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Heb. 4:12. Hallelujah to God! The word is the discerner and the divider, and after we are forgiven and enter the valley of grace (favor or peace) there is another work yet remains to be done, and so the word comes in and sets man free: Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth. — Jno. 17:17. For he giveth more grace. — James 4:6. By whom also [by Christ] we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand. — Rom. 5:2. For the law [word] of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin [carnal mind] and death. — Rom. 8:2.

Euphrates, the fourth, signifies, that makes fruitful. Now we have them. First, a change, our sins forgiven and receive the spirit of adoption into God’s family by being born anew. Second, valley of grace, where we have peace with God. This we enter by means of the first. Third, a dividing or separation from the carnal nature or the law of sin. Fourth, fruitful: Now being made free from sin and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and in the end everlasting life. Rom. 6:22. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, against such there is no law.” Gal. 5:22, 23. Every branch that beareth fruit he purgeth [purifieth] it that it may bring forth more fruit. Jno. 15:2. To him that overcometh, will I give to eat of the tree of life which is in the midst of the paradise of God. Rev. 2:7.

The tree of life was in the garden of Eden or paradise, there we go to eat. But says one, We do not gain this possession here, not until we die, then we get to eat of this free of life. And he showed one a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceed- out of the throne of God and out of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. Rev. 22:1, 2. On either side of the river was there the tree of life. O glory be to Jesus! the tree of life is on both sides of the river [death], not after we die but on this side of death the soul gets into the paradise of God, where the tree of life is. It bears fruit not once a year only but every month, that is continually. To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone and in the stone a new name written which no man knoweth saving him that receiveth it. Rev. 2:17. The hidden manna was in the sanctuary, in the holiest of all, or most holy place, in the ark of the covenant, which is the mercy seat [even Christ] to whom we go for redemption. Will give him a white stone, this was the custom in ancient days when two friends would part, to take a white pebble and serve it, engrave their names upon them, then exchange pieces and names. Perhaps years after they would meet, and by joining the stones to see if they would fit and by looking at the name to see if it was their name and engraving, then they could not be mistaken, even so does Christ, when we become acquainted with him we exchange names, he keeps our name with him written down in heaven, we keep his name with us written down upon the tables of our heart, we are members of his body, of his flesh and bones.

Oh dear fellow creatures, when Jesus returns will your life perfectly join and be like his? Can he say unto you, “Thou hast kept my word and hast not denied my name? Behold I come quickly; hold fast that which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. Rev. 3:11. The Lord bless the faithful. Amen.

THREE DAYS AND NIGHTS.

_____

“AS Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” — Matt. 12:40. According to the tradition of Babylon this is not true. Was Jesus three days and three nights in the grave, or did he prophesy falsely? This is an important question; as it is bothering the minds of some people. Sceptics defyingly array themselves against the holy word on the account of those supposed contradictions. By the assistance of some suggestions I gathered, which I find not exactly correct, I will endeavor to rightly divide God’s word on this matter. If according to tradition, Christ was crucified on Friday and arose on Sunday, there is a mistake in the Bible and proves Christ false. Three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. We believe he was the Son of God and cannot testify falsely. He did not mean three half days or thirty-six hours.

After he was buried, the chief priests and pharisees came together unto Pilate, saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, “After three days I will rise again,” and requesting Pilate to make the tomb secure. Matt. 27:63. If Christ was crucified on Friday and arose on Sunday, it does not give any part of the third day and night. Now let us examine. The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. Jno. 20:1.

Mark says, And when the Sabbath was past Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Jesus and Salome [had] bought [Diag. had, left out] spices that they might come and anoint him. Mark 16:1. Luke says, And they returned, and prepared spices and ointment: and rested the Sabbath day according to the commandment. And upon the first day of the week very early in the morning they came unto the sepulchre, etc. Luke 23:50. Mark says, When the sabbath was past. Luke says they prepared them and rested the sabbath; which would be a marked contradiciton. The fact is, there were two sabbaths between his crucifixion and resurrection, for this was the feast of the passover, which had two holy days of rest in which no work was to be done. And the first day there shall be a holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be a holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that may be done. Ex. 12:16. Therefore shall ye observe this day in your generation by an ordinance forever. V. 17. The first day of the feast was a holy day of rest or sabbath. The slaying of the Lamb was typical of Christ. Then Jesus, six days before the pass- over came to Bethany. Jno. 12:1. The passover was the fifteenth, and six days before would be the ninth, he came to Bethany. On the next (the tenth) Jesus rode into Jerusalem with kingly honors, when there was a great demonstration and excitement among the people; and Jesus said, The hour is come that the Son of man should be glorified. 12:23. Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven saying, I have both glorified it and will glorify it again. — 28.

What hour had come? On the tenth day of the first month the lamb was selected and kept till the fourteenth day, then they killed it in the evening. Ex. 12:3-6. And the next day, the fifteenth, was a holy day in which no work was done, a sabbath. V. 15. So the Lamb of God was set apart on the tenth day of the month, rejected by the pharisees, etc., Jno. 12., was crucified on the fourteenth day at the third hour[9 o’clock], Mar. 15:25, at the sixth hour [12 o’clock] it turned dark, at the ninth hour [or three o’clock] he cried with a loud voice and gave up the Ghost, when the vail of the temple was rent in twain from top to bottom. V. 34.

So Christ was crucified oh Wednesday, the 14th, and was buried about sunset. There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand. Jno. 19:42. And that was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on. Luke 23:54. The sabbath drew on and because this sepulchre was nigh, they had to bury so as to not violate the law of God regarding the sabbath, the sabbath being so nigh. After the sabbath was past, they brought spices and came very early on the first day of the week. It was doubtless too early to buy it on the morning of the first day of the week; but after the first sabbath was past, the passover sabbath, which was Thursday, on Friday they bought the spices, then as Luke says, rested the sabbath, the weekly sabbath or Saturday, and came early Sunday morning to anoint him. Then if Christ was crucified Wednesday he laid in the grave over Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights, which would be three nights, and all of Thursday, Friday and Saturday; which would be three days and three nights: just according to his own word, that the Son of man would be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. It is very true tradition teaches that he rose some time Sunday morning and that would tie the third day, but as the day commences at six o’clock, and the women came very early at dawn and there was [had been, Gr.] a great earthquake, so he must and did rise before daylight, and no doubt at or near the end of the Sabbath which ended at six in the evening; which was the end of the three days and nights. But it is very evident Sunday cannot be counted as one of the three days, and as Sunday or the first day of the week began at six in the evening, he rose the first day of the week. If he was crucified Friday, and buried about and very near the end, he was in the grave Friday night, Saturday, and then rose some time before daylight Sunday morning. He could be in the grave two nights and one day, falling short two days and one night; which would make Christ false and inconsistent. Let God be true but every man a liar.

Dear Trumpet Readers: God bless you all. I fell impressed this evening to write you a few lines of my Christian experience in life up to the present time. When I was a very small child I was taught to love God and to read his holy word, although I did not understand the meaning of a great many things therein: yet my little heart was fond of reading it. One night, when about the age of 12 years, I was in my room to myself reading of the death and sufferings of my Savior, and that it was on account of my sins. My eyes were filled with tears; I was convicted of my sins and sought forgiveness. God forgave me and I was justified in his sight. I joined the M. E. sect, as that was the place my parents had their names enrolled. I lived from then till the summer of 1887 up to all the light I had, at which time it was my privilege to hear sanctification preached by Bro’s Creel, Bradley and others. They preached it as I had never heard it before, as a second work of grace wrought in the heart. I saw at once that I needed it. I sought the blessing, but did not obtain it then, but afterwards on the 15th of Oct. at a prayer meeting at my father’s house I received the blessing. My soul was made happy in the love of God. I then with other saints could praise God from the depth of my heart for salvation in Jesus. I have ever since lived a life in harmony with God’s word, although I have had the devil to tempt me in many ways, and many trials and troubles have I had, yet God has been with me, and says his grace is sufficient for me. Yes these fiery trials are for our good, and they will all work out for our good in the end. I ask an interest in the prayers of God’s children that I may prove faithful to the end, for he that endureth to the end shall be saved. O souls, let’s ever be true to God, and never do any thing that would bring reproach upon him or his cause.

Yours in Christ,

Annie J. Snowden.

DIVINE HEALING
—OF—
SOUL AND BODY.

A New Book,
—by—
E. E. BYRUM.

_____

This book is just fresh from the author’s pen, and a glance at the contents is enough to convince any one of its interest and value to those seeking a more thorough khowledge of the Divine Being, and his dealings with people at the present time, as well as in days past.

The first part of the book very plainly marks out the way from sin unto full salvation, according to the teaching of the sacred word.

It presents the gospel truth in such a way as to throw a gleam of light into the pathway of the sinner, and enable him to see that there is hope beyond, through the mercies of a blessed Redeemer.

The BELIEVER is led to see the beauties of full salvation, and the joys in a life of Christian perfection.

THE HEALING OF THE BODY

constitutes the second part of the book. This consists of twenty-six chapters on doctrinal subjects, exposing and overthrowing false ideas and theories concerning the healing power in these last days, showing when, how, and under what circumstances and conditions God heals the sick and afflicted at the present time.

It gives a history and testimonies of healing from the time of Abraham, through the different ages, up to the present time.

The third part of the book consists of the

WITNESSES OF TO DAY.

These are wonderful testimonies of persons who have been healed within the last few years by divine power; such as being instantly restored to sight after having been blind for years; the lame throw away their crutches; broken bones are instantly healed; invalids who have suffered for years immediately arise and walk, after the prayer of faith is offered, etc. The author is personally acquainted, with nearly all the parties who have herein given their testimonies, and gives their names and addresses in the book, so that persons doubting the truthfulness of the same can write to the parties themselves.

It will be a precious volume to those who are afflicted in either soul or body. The chapters on faith, and also other subjects, will strengthen the faith of the reader, and aid in a closer walk with Him who is the “giver of every good and perfect gift.”

It contains 248 good-sized pages; good, plain print, on heavy paper. Neatly bound in cloth, $ .75. Library (half morocco), marble edge, $1.10. Send two cent stamp for special terms to agents. Address,

We are glad to learn that only a few hundred dollars are wanting to purchase and fit out the Floating Bethel. Now, dearly beloved, you that lave the Lord’s means, do, for Jesus’ sake cut the lines and let the Lord’s work move on. Let this matter be attended to at once. __________

Be it also remembered, over one hundred dollars is lying ready to erect the home for poor preachers’ children. We humbly beseech all God’s people to move forward in this matter so that this means be not long held back from its designed mission for the want of more.

__________

For some time our soul has been increasingly burdened for the more rapid spread of God’s saving truth, for means to publish the same in German, Holland, French and other languages. And a few days ago we received a letter from Bro. Byrum expressing the same movings of the Spirit of God for the enlarging of this great work. He remarked that he would to God that some brethren who are blessed with abundance of this world’s riches could only take his seat a few days, read the flood of letters coming from hungry souls all over the world, begging for the pure gospel of God, yea, souls starving for spiritual food, and many of them likely to die and perish soon, and have the feelings that fill our hearts, minds and souls, it would surely be impossible for them to go on laying up treasures on earth while blood-bought souls are going to eternal destruction. O my dearly beloved, for Heaven’s sake do your duty! The time is short; do not heap up riches for the last days lest the rust of it witness against you in the awful day of the Lord. By the faith of the Son of God we will move forward and our God will help us as in the past. Two more workers are soon coming to the office. An additional laborer in the kitchen is much needed. We pray God to make the selection, for none but his choosing will fill the place. We pray God to move upon some one to come soon. We are thankful to God for the wonderful spreading of the holy fire; and yet when we consider how short the time is, and the vast regions yet to be reached by the true gospel, and the abundance of means that could go forth preaching Jesus, and bring a rich reward to those whom God has made stewards, but which is bringing in no glory to God, we cannot help but cry out day and night in our souls, O God, arise in thy might, break forth in sweeping victory to the North, South, East and West.

And while we thus confess the earnest prayer of our heart, we have this witness, that we have a single eye, a pure, single motive to the glory of God, and that no self has any place in the matter. Occasionally some one’s tongue under evil control throws out the assertion that we are getting rich on the people’s offerings to God. But a moment’s reflection, and the use of common sense must show any one the unkind insinuation is false. Twelve years ago a newspaper man told us that no paper could run without advertisements. But God has carried on his paper these twelve years without a single paid ad. Nearly one year ago we changed the issue from a semi-monthly to a weekly and left the price the same. Now I ask how can we be getting rich in this business when we send out about two papers free to one for which we receive pay, and send many thousand free tracts during the year? We doubt very much if there is a publishing house on earth that sends out as much printed matter at as small an income as we do. We have a holy jealousy for every cent that comes into our possession to be used to the greatest good for Christ and souls he died to save. If there were a large influx of money and but a slim export of matter, men might well judge that we consume it in luxuries, or hoarded it for selfish ends; but as the facts before God are just the reverse, every tongue must be silent except it be such as are “set on fire of hell.” Surely we do not pocket any means sent in to carry on this work, for it never comes into our hands; and as to Bro. Byrum, he has mortgaged his own home to procure funds to purchase the necessary machinery. O that God would help every soul to do what you can, and be enriched from Heaven! “For there is a giving that enricheth, and a withholding more than is meet, which tendeth to poverty.” In this earnest appeal, dear readers, we are conscious of seeking only your good, the good of others, and the glory of God. In fact, our connection with the business has nothing to do with our earnest desires to see the precious saving truth of God go forth to all souls.

Beloved, remember that any produce that God has given you beyond your needs would prove a blessing in the big family at work for God at Grand Junction. Wheat and fruit are very highly appreciated, and God will bless all who thus help in the good work. Amen.

Brother W. M. Wilson of Norwood, Mo. writes: “I feel led by the Spirit of God to make my wants known. I have been broken up financially. Have two hundred dollars debt in bank bearing about 20 per cent interest. I have turned out everything I had to pay debts except I have a homestead, which I am anxious to sell so as to save the cause of Christ from all reproach, and be relieved from the burden of care on my heart so I can go forth and obey the call of God to preach the gospel. I propose to sell for about one-half the cost of improvements. It is only three miles from R. R. station, and will make a good home for some brother, a good sheep farm. There are about twenty or twenty-five acres in cultivation, about eighty acres under fence, two good living springs, a house 28×14, and an additional room for cooking. Also good stables and sheds. A good young apple orchard beginning to bear; also peaches, plumbs and cherries. Now if any one wants a cheap home write me at Norwood, Mo. or come and see me. And let the saints ask God to send a buyer for the glory of God; for I would far rather give up house and home than have the cause of Christ suffer.

__________

WHO ARE “WE?”

Some of the brethren in the ministry adopt the editorial form of expression “we” alluding to themselves in the singular number. This we do not think wise. Sometimes it misleads the mind of the reader to think that other parties were present, whereas the speaker only refers to himself in the plural form. Some use this plural with an humble endeavor to avoid the use of I; but while they seek to exhibit the fruits of meekness they may be taken by the hearer as stretching themselves beyond their measure in a vain imitation of editors. So the best way is to talk just as people talk for common. When refering to yourself individually use the nominative I and objective me. As, I am saved. He spoke to me. Both in preaching and writing talk as other people do. But it is wise to adopt such phrases as avoid the use of I as much as possible. For instance, there is a great difference in the effect produced upon the people whether you say, “I have not sinned this day,” or “God has kept me free from all sin this day.” The first begins with I, and opens a door of temptation to the hearer, that you are only a bigot. The second sets forth only what God has done, while man is only the subject upon which divine grace has been bestowed. This only magnifies God. So in all our teaching keep God prominent and man in the background.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

__________

Greenwood, S. C., Sept. 12, 1892.

Dear Saints: As you have had no report from this part of the Lord’s vineyard, I will report as best I can. We have no pure gospel preached here except my own efforts. The people are yoked up in sectism and the time has come when they won’t hear sound doctrine. I have been preaching at a school house once a month, and they have asked me to discontinue my appointment. This part of the Lord’s vineyard needs more laborers. They said they did not have any thing against my preaching, but I did not belong to any church (sect) and they did not want their children taught that way. Myself, wife and Brother Weaver are all alone. We are as sheep among wolves; but lo, the Lord is with us alway; praise his holy name! I am stronger now than I ever was before. I ask the saints to pray for us that we may hold out faithful and that the Lord may raise up a co-worker with me. God bless the world and open the eyes of the blind is my prayer. Amen.

Dear Trumpet Readers: May the dear Lord bless you all with grace to stand for his name’s sake. The North Eagle assembly meeting was a glorious feast to the souls that attended; victory and power from the first to the last. There were about five consecrations, some for pardon and one for the fullness. All professed to receive what they sought. The church much strengthened and encouraged. Bro. C. E. Reeves and Sister Walters were there, and both preached the word with power and liberty. The dear Lord did help us to speak his word, and filled our souls with glory. My future address will be Maple Rapids, Mich.

Dear Brethren and Trumpet Readers: We are saved up to this ..ate, and have every reason to trust ..od and believe he will keep us saved … the future. We just closed the Dark ..o. meeting. They seemed to take down the radical truth on oneness, etc., and said they were out of all sects. May God lead them for to please him is our prayers. The brethren from Sidney were over on Sabbath and greatly refreshed us by their presence. God bless the brethren in Dark Co., and reflect his own light through them. Dear Brethren: I am at home again, after an absence of nearly three months, traveling several hundred miles and seeing many precious souls saved. It was a precious campaign, and very prolific with glory to God. I preached at Bro. Hulls’, Sunday after grove meeting, which was a glorious day as witnessed to by all the saints, establishing them wonderfully. Being nearly worn out I concluded to rest, but preached over the following Sunday at Sweetser with good effect. God showing me that I was needed at home, I came in haste and found just as God showed me, the trouble between two parties. Now I want to say in all my labors I only received three dollars to send home to my family, nearly three months, and had just about enough money to bring me home. This looks almost like muzzling the ox. Now brethren, this is not right. Paul says, “Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things. Be not deceived; God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. Gal. 6:6, 7. May God stir up the brethren to their duty. I left the practice of medicine for the ministry, and I have nothing to depend on to support my family, only as God and his people supply. It seems I am driven to the necessity of doing something else to provide for them. God bless his people. Amen.

Custards, Pa., Sept. 24, 1892.

Dearly Beloved Brethren: May the Lord abundantly bless you all. We desire to testify that we are still saved to the uttermost. Hallelujah! After the Red Lion C. M. we went and held a grove meeting at Ten Mile Bottom, near Hill City. This place was entirely new, for the gospel of the kingdom had never been preached there. The people took a good interest in selecting and preparing a very beautiful grove, and all things were ready at the appointed time. It was the most precious gospel seed-sowing time we had experienced for a long time. The power and presence of God was glorious in the midst, from first to last, and about all acknowledged the truth. A few were justified and one sanctified wholly and received the witness of the Spirit. Saints from other points attended the feast, which closed with a glorious victory for the cause of Bible truth and holiness. The Lord abundantly bless and reward the dear people who treated us with such kindness and cheerful hospitality.

Next we commenced meeting the 20th at Fertigs. In this as in other meetings, many were indeed deeply convicted, but would not then yield, pay the price and be saved in God, but we believe that at least some of them will be saved in the near future. One backslider was joyfully and fully restored in the favor and family of God. All the saints were much edified and more established and settled in God. One was baptized by dear Bro. Cox. A few yet remain to be baptized at Ten Mile Bottom in the near future. This meeting was also a glorious feast on the Sabbath with a very precious ordinance service, in which twenty-one saints participated. Bro. Samuel Powell was ordained elder of the church at Fertigs. May the Lord ever be his sufficiency and qualify and make him faithful in his office. Also, dear Bro E. Cox was ordained elder in the church of the living God, and to the work of the ministry. The Lord ever anoint and make him very useful in the gospel. Monday, the 26th, Bro. Cox leaves for the Webb City C. M. in Mo., and for his home. The meeting here is fruitful; the Lord is present in power. Hallelujah! Amen. Pray for us.

Yours in perfect love and humility,

Hartsells, Ala., Sept. 15, 1892.

To all the Saints, Greeting: We are praising God this morning for what he is doing in this place. Since our last report at Somerville we have been busily engaged in the work of the Lord. We held an eight days’ meeting at Blue Spring. This was a seed-sowing time. There were only three professions. After this we returned to Somerville and baptized two. From here we went to Mt. Zion, where Bro. Achor and I held meeting when we first came to Ala., and held meetings from Friday till Sunday night with eleven professions. On Sunday fourteen followed Jesus in the ordinance of baptism. The church in this place is in good working order; the enemy also is at work. O that all the dear ones will be eternally true to God. “As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself except it abide in the vine, no more can ye except ye ABIDE in me.” So it is by ABIDING in him that we continue to bear fruit. Jesus says, Matt. 24:31, “But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” In Rev. 2:10, “Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.” In Mark 14:38, Jesus said, “Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.” Also in Mark 13:35-38, “Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cock-crowing, or in the morning: lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.” Peter admonishes us in his second epistle, 3d chap., 14th V. to be diligent that we may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. O that the saints will heed the warnings of Jesus Christ and his holy apostles, and “As ye received Christ Jesus the Lord so walk ye in him.” Col. 2:6. The idea has prevailed to some extent in this place, that when a soul is sanctified he can never fall. But this is one of the stones of Babylon; one off the devil’s poisonous arrows, by which he destroys souls. Paul says in 1 Tim. 6:11-14, after speaking of the deceitfulness of riches,” But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; that thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. “We see how the apostle admonishes us to keep this commandment without spot. In 2 Tim. 4: 6, 7 he declares, “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” Peter tells us again in 1 Pet. 5:8, Be sober, be vigilant: [watchful] because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist steadfast in the faith. Now why all this faithful warning if we could not fall? God help all the dear saints to be vigilant and keep their covenant with God. James says, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” It is by perfect obedience that we retain salvation. “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” Let all the saints pray for us and the work in this place.

Your brother, saved and sanctified to day,

J. F. Lundy.

Sidney, Ohio, Sept. 22, 1892.

Dear Saints of the Most High God: May the peace of God abide in you all. Amen.

We are truly happy to report all well, perfect victory in our soul just now over all sin. The tabernacle meeting near New Hampshire, Ohio, was one of perfect victory from beginning to end. Souls were made free who were bound by sin and Satan. When we first came into the place we felt much opposition in the people to the truth, but by the eternal working in us this to a great extent moved away. We felt that much good was effected in the way of sowing the good seed in many hearts. God wonderfully helped Bro’s R. N. Gast and Otto Bolds in preaching his word. Some dear souls from the neighborhood of the Beech Dale meeting which will begin to day arose for prayers. I hope I shall learn of them giving their hearts unto the Lord. A Quaker brother who had heard one sermon at West Liberty camp meeting, followed us to New Hampshire grove meeting, the distance of about twenty-five miles, to hear a sermon on the church. We did not know this before, and even after he had come, God most wonderfully led us to preach the church of the Bible the night he came. The brother praised God through the whole discourse, and thanked God for the same. He returned home determined to forsake all sectism and stand upon the truth, a free man in Christ. God is moving him to preach the word. Bro. Bolds and I are at this place with West Liberty tabernacle to commence meeting to night. Bro. and Sister Gast returned home until the time of the Markleville tabernacle meeting. At the close of this meeting I go to help Bro. B. E. Warren in meeting at La Rue, Ohio. Pray for me that I may keep in God’s order and win souls to him.

I am your brother all sold out to Jesus, sanctified wholly,

Dear Ones in the Lord: I am all the Lord’s and he is mine. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He cares for me. He keeps me cleansed and sanctified wholly, free from all sin, and pure in his sight. Glory to his name! How my soul doth magnify the Lord this morning! I have the real living witness down deep in my soul. After leaving Tekonsha, took train Kalamazoo where I rested the body a few days and held a few meetings with the dear ones at that place; found them still fighting the good fight of faith, having laid hold on eternal life. One dear soul came to the altar for pardon; one for the second grace. From there, came to Kendall where I met with the brethren and sisters in the evenings. Bro’s Roe and Bixler were also with us. From there I came to Lacota, where I am at present, but expect soon to be ready to go out again wherever the Lord wants me.

Jesus said, Let not my Father’s house become a house of merchandise; and he took a whip of small cords and drove them out. Candy, peanuts and other unnecessary things have been sold at meetings. God grant it may not be named among us as becometh saints. Beware also lest some of you are not found straining at little gnats, and at the same time swallowing great camels. And see to it that you do not act, think, talk and wear things before the world which you would be ashamed of before the saints. God forbid that any should become fanatical or go to extremes either way. But let us be modest in demeanor, plain and clean in dress, also with some taste, temperate in all things and that includes food and drink. And now may the God of peace make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working In you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, and preserve you blameless in holiness, body, soul and spirit, unto his coming and heavenly kingdom; to whom be glory and honor now and forever. Amen.

Yours saved through Jesus’ blood, and kept by his mighty power,

Elsie L. Robinson.

Dear Saints of God: My testimony is this morning, I am saved in Christ Jesus and am rejoicing in this blessed rock of my salvation. I feel led of my Master to write some on the subject of a good and a corrupt tree. We have to be either a good tree bringing forth good fruit, or a corrupt tree bringing forth evil fruit; because a tree is known by its fruit. Matt. 12:33. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Matt. 7:18. A good tree is one who follows the Spirit. “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit and ye shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.” — Gal. 5:16. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatary, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, [or sects] envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like. They which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. How many there are who are claiming to be children of God and are doing some of these ungodly things, and are lovers of the world, the pride and fashions thereof, when John says, If any man love the world the love of the Father is not in him. 1 John 2:15. But as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Praise God forever and ever for His wonderful Spirit! The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long- suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, against such there is no law. Gal. 5:19-24. Amen.

I do feel in my soul that God has wonderfully blest and strengthened me. Praise his holy name! I have been saved almost seven months, and am sanctified to do my Master’s will, walking up to all the light God lets shine on my pathway. Pray much for the little church at this place.

Your sister under the precious blood,

Bessie Moore.

Died, Sept. 12, 1892, at his residence near Advance. Marion Co., Miss., Bro. T. E. Galliway, aged 23 years, and some months. He bore his sufferinfis with Christian fortitude, and died as a Christian only can die, — in the arms of Jesus. Bro Galliway was born into the family of God two years ago last Aug. Since that time up to the date of his death, held the testimony of Jesus. He leaves a wife and three little children to mourn his death. But the dear companion mourns not as those that have no hope. She too is sweetly saved in Jesus.

Near Rising Sun, Ohio, our dear Bro. Jacob Gries departed this life Aug. 29, 1892; aged 26 years, 11 mo., and 10 days. Bro. Gries had been afflicted for the last few years; was greatly loved and respected by all who knew him. Last winter when Bro. and Sister Walters were here at this place holding meetings, be became greatly concerned about his soul and began seeking the Lord, and some weeks before he died was gloriously saved. It pleased the Lord to wonderfully use him to his glory by exhorting and admonishing all who came to see him in his last hours; and he requested all to meet him in heaven. Our prayer is, God bless Father and Mother Gries and all surviving friends in their bereavements, and all be prepared to meet the loved one in heaven.

This lovely bud, so young, so fair,
Called hence by early doom;
Just came to show how sweet a flower
In paradise would bloom.

Ere sin could harm, or sorrow fade
Death came with friendly care;
The opening bud to heaven conveyed,
And bade it blossom there.

_____

The Lord has promised to be with his children in six troubles, and will not forsake in the seventh. Yea, he is “a very present help in the time of trouble.” Then why worry and trouble yourself about the things of life, when doing so only makes matters worse.

_____

There are many people who envy the happiness of others and bewail their own condition, who seem to forget that God is not a respecter of persons, but offers the same salvation and happiness to all. To one man who was trying so hard and had failed to reach the experience desired, Christ told him to go and sell his property and give to the poor. Many people of to day would have a healthier soul if they would go and do likewise.

_____

It is better to have a diseased body than to have a diseased soul, yet the masses of the people have both, while God in his infinite mercy and goodness offers to heal both soul and body. In his word he sets forth the remedy for both. The principal things required are faith and works. Too many people try to make a one-sided affair of it and either do the whole thing by their good works, or on the other hand do it all by faith alone. The good Book says, ‘‘Faith without works is dead,” and works without faith is just as bad. Faith and works go together. For the healing of the soul one must not only perform the works of confessing, forsaking, and repenting of all sins committed, but must also exercise faith and believe that God is true and answers his prayers to the saving of his soul. For the healing of the body, a child of God must not only use the means set forth in the word, namely, send for the elders of the church, and be anointed according to James 5:14, 15, but the prayer of faith must be offered and then the Lord does the work.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS.

__________

A brother asks the question, How can any one fall from grace who has been born of God; when the word says, He that is born of God cannot commit sin?

Ans. This question has been answered before, but we answer again. Take notice, John speaks in the present tense. Whosoever is [just now] born of God doth not commit sin: for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is [present tense] born of God. 1 Jno. 3:9. A person might be born of God to-day, but in a week from to-day get out of Christ, then he can sin, but as long as he is in Him it is impossible to sin. The question then arises, How can he get out of Christ? James tells us, 1:15. Then when lust is conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Now when we conceive lust in our hearts, of any kind, it bringeth forth, or produces death. And when we are dead we are out of Christ. If a Christian conceives in his heart to even retaliate some offence the conception produces death.

Peter says, 2 Pet. 1:10, tells us of things which if we do we “shall never fall.” Read Heb. 6:4-6; Eze 3:20. and many others showing the possibilty of falling.

Another asks: Does the Bible forbid going in or joining an order to protect labor, that is, a secret order with signs, grips and pass words?

Ans. The Bible does forbid it. Paul says, Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? etc. 2 Cor. 6:14. In those secret orders they are joined or yoked together by their oaths and obligations into a brotherhood. A saint and a sinner? No. A saint cannot go there and remain a saint. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. Eph. 5:11, 12. He commands us to reprove them. We cannot reprove them, and not fellowship them, and remain in them. Let every body who wants to retain salvation, and stand in favor with God, stay out of places of iniquity. We often meet poor souls who seem to desire to be saved, but are bound in chains of everlasting darkness, by those oath-bound societies. The echo is, Stay out.

Another asks, Can a man be ordained a minister in the church of God and use tobacco?

Ans. A man cannot be ordained in the church of God to preach the gospel, because it is in violation to the word of God. 2 Cor. 7:1. Eph. 5:3, 4. All uncleanness and filthiness is forbidden in the word of God. Paul says, Preach the word. 2 Tim. 4:2. Then 2:6, the husbandman that laboreth must be first partaker of the fruits.

LOVE.

“The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying. Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with loving kindness have I drawn thee.” Jer. 31:8.

LOVE is a mighty propelling arm which reaches out in sympathy for the poor lost sinner, and leads him to the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. [It was love that found out me.]

“Let love be without dissimulation, abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.” Rom. 12:9. Notice the love of God. “He gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life. Jno. 3:16. God has given the richest jewel that heaven ever knew for you poor sinner. Why respect offered mercies, life is uncertain, death is sure. The Lord has life for you, the devil has death. You alone are, making your everlasting abode either in heaven or hell, your salvation depends upon your own will. Time is short, you must decide at once.

We get the love of God planted in our hearts in regeneration, and get the love of God perfected in our hearts by entire sanctification. Paul makes this very plain. See Titus 3:4,5. — “But after the kindness and love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration and the renewing [or renovating] of the Holy Ghost. Regeneration produces peace, while sanctification keeps in peace. Isa. 26:3. “Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also; knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience experience; and experience hope; and hope maketh not ashamed; why? because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which he has given unto us. Rom. 5:1-5. “Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as he is so are we in this world.” 1 Jno. 4:17. “There is no fear in love: but perfect love casteth out fear, because fear hath torment, he that feareth is not made perfect in love, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love, and of a sound mind.” 2 Tim. 1:7. Why is it some are being drawn away after the giddy things of the world, stay away from prayer meetings, have such dry prayers and testimonies, and many other things which ought not be? Let the word of God answer. “Nevertheless I have something against thee, because thou hast lost thy first love.” Rev. 2:4. May all such heed the admonition in the proceeding verse before too late. May God help all to know that the friendship of the world is emnity against God, and to love this world proves that the love of God is not in us.

Oh dear beloved saints, let us be careful what we do, or where we go, the devil knows his time is short, and he is setting snares to catch souls. See Matt. 24:12-18. Keep the love of God burning in your hearts and all will be well.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I am praising God to day for the sweet peace I have in my soul. I can truly say, God has wonderfully saved me, although I have been afflicted ever since I was seven years old, being blind, but God has given me spiritual eyes so I can understand his word. I was saved last June at the Grand Junction camp meeting. I have a great desire to have a home among the children of God. Pray for me that I may be obedient to the whole will of God.

Your saved sister,

Libbie Sweetland.

Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: I feel led to write my experience to the Trumpet. I trust you will bear with me. I am enjoying a free and full salvation, which the world cannot give nor take away. Blessed be the name of the Lord! I gave my body a living sacrifice to the Lord, and he sanctified my soul, to do his will. Praise his name forever! May God help all honest ones to flee out of Babylon, and all the dishonest ones to get saved. I am so glad God has opened my eyes and enabled me to discern between good and evil.

Dear Saints: I am praising God for what he has done for me. He has saved me from all sin, and he has been so wonderfully blessing me since I gave my all to Jesus. Praise the Lord! I was converted when I was very young; but I was taken down into Babylon, where I lived about four years before I heard the doctrine of holiness preached. But I did not come out of Babylon, and I went back into the world. Praise the Lord! He spared me to turn unto him, for which I give him all the praise. I am just praising God for salvation that saves people from their sins.

Dear Friends In Christ: I can say I am sanctified and living to do God’s holy will. I know I have been made a new creature in Christ. The things I once loved I now hate. I have the sweet peace and perfect love that casteth out fear. Oh how I am made to praise our Lord every day for such a salvation! I praise him for the healing of my body. When about fourteen I was convicted; I went to the Lord in faith, with a heavy heart asking him to forgive me. It was done; I was free from the heavy load and made happy in the Lord. I joined the M. E. sect; I lived in it about ten years. If I knew I did wrong I would ask the Lord to forgive me. I can say I have found a better way. The Lord did answer my prayers. My husband was a sinner, trying to live moral; I prayed God to convert him. The Lord did work mightily with him. He now is sanctified, and we are praising our God every day, living wholly for Jesus. Pray for us.

Your humble sister,

Ica North.

Dear Saints of the Living God: I praise the Lord this morning for full and complete salvation that enables me to stand steadfast, unmovable in the Lord. Bless his holy name! I find that the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ is sufficient for me to stand in these last days. We realize that perilous times have come, in which it takes the whole armor of God to stand. Only them that endure until the end shall be saved, and I expect by the grace of God to serve my blessed Master in the beauty of holiness. Pray for me.

Dear Saints of the Most High: I wish to add my testimony to the many wonderful testimonies of the dear ones of the Trumpet once more Praise the Lord, I can say to the honor and glory of God that by believing with the heart that I am set free from all sin and sectism or creeds and organization of men, glory to God. We want some of God’s holy fire brand ministers to come to this place quickly to preach the gospel, baptize and ordain elders for the church in these parts, I have engaged a very large hall that they can use, whoever can come. The dear Lord has pressed upon my mind that he has a work in the vineyard for me to do for him. Dear brethren and sisters everywhere pray the Lord to heal my body, I have a touch of lung trouble.

Your humble brother,

W. H. Morris.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led to write my testimony this morning. I am praising God for salvation that saves me from all sin. And I am kept by the power of God through faith. I was converted about six years ago and joined the Baptist sect. After I heard holiness preached I saw it was right and didn’t accept it and I went back, into the world. I attended the meeting here about two weeks but did not take any interest in it. They left here and went to another neighborhood where I attended the meeting on Sunday, and had started back again on Monday, but was not going for any good. The Lord struck me down on the way, I was carried to a neighbor’s, where I stayed three days, scarcely knowing anything during that time. Called an earthly physician, but the Lord showed me that he was the only Physician that could heal me. When I put every thing in his hands he healed me both soul and body.

Dear Saints: I am led of the Spirit to write my testimony. The Lord has justified my soul, for which I give him all the praise. I want to go on till I am sanctified, spirit, soul and body. I ask all the dear saints to pray for my hungry soul that it may be filled full to overflowing with the Holy Ghost. It has been about two months since I first heard the evening light. Oh I do praise the good Lord every day for sending one of his true ministers along this way, Bro. Bolds and wife. May the Lord bless them wherever they go. About ten years ago I joined the M. E. sect. I never felt so happy as I do now. Bless the Lord! I know I am on the right road; I can’t go sectarianism any more. I am so happy trusting in Jesus. When fiery trials come I do say they make me still happier, for I trust in Jesus the more. I ask the dear saints to pray for my husband who is unsaved. My hardest trial is on his account. May the Lord send conviction to Him so strong that he will have to give up to the Lord. I often think it would take the same conviction that Paul had to convince him to repent of his sins. It is my prayer to see him converted. May the good Lord send some one this way again to preach to us the true doctrine. Sister Sillers is wanted if it is so she can come.

From your saved sister,

Marilda A. Smith.

Dear Brethren in Christ Jesus: Though I have had to pass through many severe trials of late, and my dear companion was suddenly taken from me, god is still the widow’s God and a father to the fatherless. Had it not been for him I could never have endured all those fiery trials. Oh how he did support and comfort me! I am still trusting in him, and in him I can rejoice continually, although this is only the beginning of sorrow. Since my companion was called away I have found much comfort in going to meeting. God has so wonderfully blessed me in prayer and testimony, and singing his praises, but Satan is wonderfully stirred, he is trying to bind me down so I can never have that blessed privilege, and would like to destroy that blessed Christ out of my soul, threatening to put a guardian over me to care for my children. Well I am not afraid, for God is my defence. “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver me from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.” I am dwelling on the mountain where the golden sunlight gleams, and the wild beasts of the forest can not reach me, although I can hear them roar and howl, but I am far above in this beautiful city of Zion whose builder and maker is God, and nothing can, enter only through the precious blood of Jesus, who is the door. Praise God!

I am on my way rejoicing,
With the glory in my soul,
And I love my blessed Master,
Who hath cleansed and mode me whole.

Praise God, there is no want to them that fear him. The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy. He says, I will instruct thee, and teach thee in the way which thou shall go. I will guide thee with mine eye. Psalm32:8.

O this blessed Holy Spirit,
How he leads me in the way;
In the straight and narrow pathway
In the light of perfect day.

Cho: — Shout his praises on the hill-tops,
Tell it to the world around;
Glory I glory! hallelujah!
What a Savior I have found.

Jesus is my only refuge,
I will trust him every day;
For I know he’ll never leave me,
He will guide me in the way.

Let us praise him, blessed Jesus,
O his glory fills my soul!
Oh, his love! no tongue can tell it,
I am every whit made whole.

O I know he’ll never leave me,
For I have him in my heart;
Blessed Jesus, precious Savior,
I will never from thee part.

And when all the loved ones gather
In that blessed home above,
We will praise him there forever,
Dwelling in the realms of love.

Your sister, saved and sanctified,

Lodema A. Lyon.
