Prayer and Faith.

_____

O it is prayer which opens up
To us the richest stores;
And brings to us that blessed cup
From heaven’s blissful shores,

O it is prayer that sinks the soul
Down deeper in God’s holy love;
‘Tis prayer that brings us to the goal
And moves for us the powers above.

O prayer and faith will reach the throne
Of our eternal mighty king;
Ask what ye will, it shall be done
If your request in faith you bring.

‘Tis Christ who soothes the sin-sick soul,
And he will heal your body too:
If on his promise you take hold
There’s nothing prayer will fail to do.

[move,
Christ says that faith will mountains
Or pluck up mighty trees,
(If we have faith his power to prove)
And cast them in the seas.

Can we not then his promise touch
As others did his clothes?
Is not his power to-day as much
If we to him our wants disclose?

The prayer of faith shall save the sick
And cause the lame to leap.
His word is true then to it stick;
O help us God this faith to keep.

‘Tis prayer and faith our Savior asks;
O let us then believe.
He lays on us no heavy tasks,
His blessings to receive.

Then help us Lord that we contend
For the faith to saints once given;
And may our prayers in faith ascend
Up to the King of heaven.

TO THE INHABITANTS OF ZION.

_____

“AWAKE! awake! put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city. Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing; for they shall see eye to eye, when the Lord shall bring again Zion.” Isa. 52:1, 8. Here the prophet raises the standard of evening light truth.

Go through, go through the gates; prepare ye the way of the people; Cast up, cast up the highway; gather out the stones; lift up a standard for the people. — Isa. 62:10. The command is now to lift up a standard: and see the result — holy people — the redeemed of the Lord: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A city not forsaken. — Isa. 62:12.

When the towers shall fall. — Isa. 30:25. Towers represent Babylon’s glory. Moreover the light of the moon (church) shall be as the light of the sun (Christ), and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the Lord bindeth up the breach of his people. — Isa. 30:26. God is light and in him is no darkness at all. Jno. 1:5 But it we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin — 1 Jno. 1:7.

The cry of Babylon is, “You raise the standard too high, we can’t reach it.” Very well, but God hath raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” — Eph. 2:6. And of the rest durst no man join himself to them.” Acts 5:13. Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead and Christ shall give thee light. — Eph. 5:14. This applies to all who are dead in sin, whether in, or out of the sects. But our first text applies to the children of God — the holy city. “Awake! AWAKE!

You say, “The holy people are all awake.” Very well, if they are once awake, here is twice more to awake. If they are awake from sin to salvation, (and many claim to be) have they the full measure of strength that belongs to God’s holy people, and was possessed in the Apostolic Age? Are they awake to that? Some say “we don’t need that now, as the divinity of Christ has been established and the canon of the scripture has been filled and the law is in favor of Christianity, etc., and therefore no need for these signs to follow them that believe, so the days of miracles have passed away.” Others say that we are living in a different age of the world and the apostles are no example to us at present, for they had to make martyrs’ consecrations, but we don’t,” etc. If any one has Bible for these and similar statements please come to the front and show us the chapter and verse, or honestly confess that God has more in store for true, ones, than you possess, and if so, are you earnestly coveting the best gifts and making good use of what you have?

Paul said, Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. — 1 Cor. 11:1. After telling us how he pressed toward the mark for the prize, etc., Phil. 3:14, he said, “Brethren, be ye followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.” Phil. 3:17. Examples unto you to follow us. 2 Thess. 3:9. Whose faith follow — Heb. 13:7. Christ — follow his steps. — 1 Pet. 2:21. If any man teach otherwise and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; he is proud, knowing nothing — 1 Tim. 6:4, 5. The apostles lived and taught the experience of the very same truth that Jesus taught, and taught others to do the same. To say that it is not required of us, is only an apology for the sad failure of not having the faith once delivered unto the saints. Jude 3.

You say, “I know I am saved and sanctified and have the Holy Ghost.” Very well, thank God for that, and “hold fast that which is good,” for that is absolutely necessary. But let me ask again, have you attained to all the strength that is your privilege in that blessed sanctified experience? or are you awake to the fact that God has something more in his abundant store-house for you? If so, do not let any one give you a dose of soothing-syrup and put you to sleep again, but let God’s Holy Spirit lead until your faith receives what God wants you to have and use for his glory and praise him for all things.

Do you know that God is on the move with his holy people? and that this reformation is to extend to the end of time, provided it revives the whole truth in the hearts and lives of God’s people, Till we all come in the unity of the faith. — Eph. 4:13. “The faith once delivered unto the saints.” Not only in theory, but experience, that demonstrates the truth in practice; as in the morning light. And these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name they shall cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover * * * And they went forth and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. Mark 16:17-20. Truly God has been working with his saints according to their faith, and to God be all the praise.

Sect-preachers have been preaching unbelief into the people for past ages and it was demonstrated by “these signs not following them” that did not believe. For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar. — Rom. 3:3, 4. You say, “How can this faith be got back into the people again?” Answer — First, by hewing down the towers of Babylon unbelief, by the word and Spirit of God, getting God’s people saved out of her. Second, by getting so filled with faith and the Holy Ghost, as to preach “the faith once delivered unto the saints,” so that these signs do follow them that believe, that is, “preach the Word” in demonstration of the Spirit and power: that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. — 1 Cor. 2:4, 5.

__________

A FEW POINTS ON SON-SHIP.

_____

BEHOLD what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. — 1 Jno. 3:1. The world does not know a real child of God, not that they do not see them in person or that their figure is not the same as other people, or the same as before their becoming sons of God, or that that they cannot become acquainted with them. But that a child of God has an experience this world cannot solve, or understand, is a great mystery to them. Neither can they understand unless they are brought under the direct influence and teaching of God’s Holy Spirit, which if they do as others have found, who have been saved, it will answer the great question and solve the great problem and the mystery will be made plain in an instant. O praise God for such an enlightenment. Many have sought in various ways by studying modern theology and consulting their leaders about this, and yet received no real experience, but have been left in the dark, veiled in carnality, because “eye hath not seen nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.”

The unregenerate cannot realize the great love wherewith God hath loved them, but when they come penitent to the mercy seat, desiring to see God as a sin-pardoning one, then the Spirit will begin to illuminate their being with the presence of our Savior and will begin to teach and lead them to a saving knowledge of the truth. The honest seeking one will understand that which all before was dark to him. Praise God! “But He hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit, for the Spirit searches all things, yea, the deep things of God. — 1 Cor. 2:10.

O that this world might begin to open their hearts to God and, become honest with themselves and with their Maker, then they could begin to see the manner of the love of God which of itself is enough to melt the hardest- hearted one and save the most guilty, to reach down the great arms of pity and mercy and get under the poorest and weakest and raise them up above this sin-cursed and blighted world and own them his children, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ our Savior. Praise his holy and excellent name! We are sons of God, first, by being adopted. Rom. 8:15: 16, — But ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. Here we see the Spirit bears the evidence that we are the children of God by being adopted into his family. Now suppose there were in your community a family of orphan children, who had no one to care for them; they being very destitute and exposed to all the cruelties and taunts of a heartless world, and a king or a rich nobleman were to kindly volunteer to take them into his family and make them equal to his own children and care for, project and provide for them, would he not be worthy of praise? And would it not be a great honor to the poor orphans to be adopted into this family? This indeed would, but it does not convey to us in the fullest sense how the poor sinner is exposed to the wrath of the enemy; is destitute of God’s grace and joy; is clothed with shame and garments of sin. When the King of glory who has riches untold comes and pleads in loving tones, begging the lost one to come to his mansion, to lay aside his garments of sin and poverty and be clothed with garments of salvation, and he will adopt him into his royal family and be made equal to the rest of the family. This God will do to all that will come though unfit for the kingdom of love, He will make them a new creature and adopt them as his own.

Second, we are the children of God by being naturalized, or by nature. Paul says Eph. 2:19, ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow- citizens, with the saints and of the household of God. This shows plainly there are some who are foreigners and strangers, that is, they are not all acquainted with God, are not accustomed to his ways, are of a different nature and of a foreign family, or one of no relation to him. Truly this would answer to a sinner as he has no family connection, or relationship with God; but is separated by wicked works and deeds.

God says, Isa. 59:1, 2, that his hand is not shortened that he cannot save neither his ear heavy, that he cannot hear, but your iniquities have separated between you and your God. Sin separates from God all who commit it. Even though under a profession; it classifies and identifies them in the one general family of sinners. Now it a person of a European nation were to leave his mother country and come to America and desire to become a citizen of our U. S. A., and comply with the requirements, he would no longer be a citizen or a subject of the foreign powers, while before this he was under the influence and control of the foreign power. He upon application for citizenship, breaks all allegiance with other nations and vows fidelity to ours, and thus becomes a son of free America. So it is with the one who is a stranger to God, while he is in sin, he is a servant of sin, he is under that influence and power. His influence is opposite to God and his ways are downward. But when he comes to God for an admittance to his kingdom, he breaks his allegiance to sin and Satan; his covenant with death is disannulled, and he vows eternal allegiance to God and passes from the powers of Satan unto God. He becomes a real citizen of this holy nation spoken of by Peter, and if a holy nation, then all of its subjects must be holy and under its direct, influence, which all are. Praise God for a holy people not in the far distant future, but now and here; and all who are of God are of this number, are of the one family of “peculiar people” who are redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus.

Now if such a person were to commit sin he breaks his vow to God, passes from his family back to the one from whence he came and is not at all a son of God or of his redeemed family, but sin breaks the family union and relation; breaks the sweet communion between God and his children. We see at the fall of Adam there was a great separation in affection and affinity. There was not that same familiarity as before when they walked and talked together, but now hid away with shame and guilt from the pure face of God. So it is with all who transgress God’s laws; they lose that sweet presence and nature of God, their companionship with Jesus is dissolved.

Paul says, Phil. 2:15. — That ye may be blameless, and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom we shine as lights in the world. O how God loves the blameless and harmless sons. Some will say to us that we cannot be thus in the world; that we always will be defiled with sin as long as we live. But Paul says we are to be thus in this world and lights in this perverse and crooked nation. Praise God, here is where he makes and keeps holy children. Here is the demand for holy people and only such are fit to represent the cause of God. It would not be so bad for unholy people to represent an unholy cause, but unholy people cannot properly and rightly represent the cause of our Savior.

Third, we become the sons of God by birth. Now as by the natural birth the son partakes of the ways and likeness of the father, so the children in this spiritual birth partake of certain atributes of the Father; such as love, for God is love; and meekness, mercy, etc. As the natural son looks, talks and acts like the father, so will the son of God partake of the ways of the heavenly parent.

It is very evident that anyone professing and not manifesting such, it is because they have not yet reached the point of deliverance from the old nature and become partakers of the divine nature. Christ said to Nicodemus, “Verily, verily I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (or born from above) And, except we become converted and become as little children we cannot enter the kingdom. To be born again and become as little children is to be: First, “Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creation. — Jas. 1:10. We are begotten by the word of truth. Then we are born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever. — 1 Pet. 1:23. Praise God! we are born by his Word, and it is spirit and life.

The effect of a birth by the Word will be a life in harmony with the Word and known will of God. We cannot put any confidence in a professed Christian birth, that does not accept all of God’s commands and obey the same. Any wrong cause will produce a like effect, a right cause will produce a right effect. So to get the life right, is to get the heart made anew. Be partakers of God’s Holy Spirit and it will lead to a life of obedience in all things whatever God has commanded us. As obedient children not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance. 1 Pet. 1:14. Obedience brings happiness, “the willing and obedient shall eat the good of the land.

Anyone writing to the brethren, in England should be sure and put postage on the letter to the amount of 5 cts. for each half ounce or fraction thereof, as it costs them double the amount to get the letters where there is a deficiency in postage.

Bro. Daugherty writes that a man by the name of Charles Alexander, greatly opposed and withstood them in the gospel work at West Brewster, Mass. He claims to be free from sects, and at the same time is in fellowship with all of them. He refuses to square up to the Word or receive instruction and admonition from the brethren, and is still trying to deceive all he can.

__________

Some one has asked why the children of God do not put forth a greater effort to spread holy literature, the writer stating that he intended to devote one whole month in distributing tracts, papers, and selling books, etc. for the glory of God and rescue of souls. Truly a great advancement can be made on that line. Some are already being awakened to the fact. Many who feel a call to the work of the Lord and not feeling called to the ministry, can use what money they earn and buy tracts, etc., to distribute from house to house, and wherever people are assembled together and thus with a few dollars, and a portion of the time spent in this way, many souls will be reached that would not otherwise get the light. God’s children should see to it that every home in the land is supplied with holiness tracts, papers, books, etc. Have you been doing all you can on this line?

Some one must sacrifice time and means in order to clear themselves of the blood of souls.

There are more than a score of busy workers here who are busy from morning until night, from the beginning to the end of the year, printing and making books and tracts and sending the glad news of salvation in every direction, and none charge a cent for wages, but do all as unto the Lord. Thousands of tracts are being made and sent out daily. Since camp meeting we have made over one hundred-thousand tracts, from one to fifty pages, mostly for free distribution. During last month we paid cash for postage for mailing, over $113.00, yet we feel the work ought to increase a hundred fold.

Dear Gospel Trumpet, and to all the Saints of God, Greeting: I am now holding from five to six meetings a week at different houses in this city, and we are opposed on every side. There are some here who are contending for the faith once delivered to the saints. There is a colored assembly here that meets every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. And our assembly the whites-meets whenever a place is opened by the Lord. We do need the prayers of all the saints of the Most High God to pray for the establishment of the true church of God and that more may be added in this place and surrounding country.

Dear Saints everywhere, Greeting: May great grace be upon you all. Shortly after the June campmeeting it pleased the Lord to have us unite in company with Sister Darr and Bro. H. and Sister Julia Myers to labor in Mo. We began meeting at DeSoto July 11, much good was done and we found a few who were sincere and accepted the truth. The powers of darkness were arrayed against us, but by power divine we claimed the victory. Praise the Lord. From thence we came to this place and began meeting in the G. A. R. hall after which the Methodists opened their house of worship and we have had good attendance and the best of order. The Lord is blessing his word and it is being dealt out without mixture. We expect to be at the Vichy camp-meeting, the Lord willing. Pray for us.

Your saved brother,

Dear Saints of the Living God: I greet you all in the name of Jesus through the GOSPEL TRUMPET. I am saved and sanctified and enjoying perfect peace in my soul. Praise God forever! I have just arrived home from ten days meeting held at Rising Star school-house near Foraker, Harden Co.. O. The blessed Lord was with us in wonderful saving power. Praise his holy name for his blessings to the children of men. We found the people in that place starving for the word of God which is truth, and the blessed Lord just helped us wonderfully in presenting the truth. Praise God it accomplished the end where unto God has sent it, in the salvation of ten precious souls. Praise his holy name! On Lord’s day, which was the close of the meeting, ten followed the blessed Master in baptism. The following evening we honored the blessed Master in washing one another’s feet and taking the Lord’s supper in remembrance of his death and sufferings to redeem man from his fallen state. We left others in deep conviction. If any of the dear brethren are led of the Lord to stop with the dear saints at that place they will find open doors and saved souls who will receive them in the name of Jesus. Pray for me.

Your brother saved in Christ,

Dearly Beloved in Jesus, Everywhere: Praise God with me for salvation full and complete. We arrived at Little York Ind., July 17. The driver that drove us over to York, in turning around upset the wagon, throwing us out under the horses’ heels; tied up in the wreck, it seemed like we were going to be dashed to pieces, but we were perfectly calm in our soul and came out without a scratch. Glory to God! We felt his presence. We commenced the battle next evening in the name of king Jesus. We did not labor but a few days till we saw some very crooked spirits. We left the church in good condition with live justified, nine sanctified and two or three who had lost their experience got hack in line with God again. Several under conviction. Would have remained longer but we received a telegram, of our mother lying at the point of death, and who is now dead. We expect to return to Tampico and Crothersville, after visiting some points in Knox and Daviess counties, the Lord willing. There were six clear souls followed Jesus in baptism yesterday.

Dearly Beloved Saints: God bless you all and keep you saved from all sin and preserved faithful unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. We are happy to report glorious victory in the name of Jesus. God is keeping us sweetly saved and rich in our souls with his grace. Praise his name! The meeting at Benton Harbor was a successful one. Praise God! Though there was no great stir, and the attendance was small, we feel that a good work was done. There were some six or eight consecrations mostly for sanctification. Some seemed to get really established in the evening light, some others that seemed to have a clear experience in sanctfication, saw the light on the church, accepted the same and renounced sectism and are now rejoicing in their freedom in the one body of Christ. The saints at Benton Harbor commenced their prayer-meeting at private houses but expect to procure a hall soon and so have a permanent place for meeting. God bless them and keep them in the unity of the Spirit for Jesus’ sake. Amen. The above report was our first meeting with the new tabernacle. It is a grand summer meeting-house. Will comfortably seat about five- hundred or more by crowding a little. We came here Thursday the 20th, pitched the tent and commenced meeting Saturday night 22nd. The meeting commenced with good interest; on Sunday the 2nd day of the meeting there were three souls at the altar. We expect to continue over Aug. 6th, and longer if necessary.

Dear Bro. Byrum and all the Saints and Dear Friends: The dear Lord has pressed it on us to write you our testimony, of God’s power to save and to keep from all sin. Also to communicate to the many friends that requested to hear from us through the Trumpet. We have praised God every day since we had the privilege of attending the Grand Junction camp-meeting, and for the light and blessing there received, which has strengthened and settled us to come out of Babylon and all her darkness. Praise God! Since then God has greatly blessed and enabled us to preach the evening light with great joy and power. But the state of the finances are such that unless the Lord opens some closed pocket-book, we will be compelled to close this work by Aug. 1st, and walk out into the world with no home, but heaven. Praise the Lord! And without a dollar, but our Father’s bank. Please pray that we may be led and used, as we believe we will, by the Lord. We wish to return thanks for the many papers and tracts sent from Trumpet office which have all been carefully and prayerfully distributed. We would be so glad to hear from any of the dear workers that may be led to write us any counsel or encouragement.

Dearly Beloved Brethren: The meeting at Cadott, was a sweeping victory and success for the Lord and his cause. God wrought gloriously in that meeting and Bible truth and holiness have been planted there to stay till his appearing again. Twenty or more professed to be justified and nearly all went on unto perfection and were sanctified by the Holy Spirit. One of these was the president another the chaplain of the Women’s Relief Corps. Another who consecrated, had been a Free-will Baptist minister, but the Lord had led him out of that sect some years ago and was seeking for his resting place in sectism but found it not, nor would the Lord suffer him to preach the sect doctrines but held the brother to His word. Step by step the Lord was bringing him to Zion and out into the evening light, he made a complete consecration, was fully cleansed and sanctified. He is now praising God for holy freedom. Thirteen were buried with Christ by immersion and a few more will be baptized in the near future. There were several cases of divine healing by the power of Jesus, some of these had been much afflicted for years and baffled the skill of medicines and doctors, but the Lord our God healed them. Hallelujah! The church of God will hold her tri-weekly meetings in His name. We had a happy ordinance-service. We arrived here the 22nd accompanied by Father and Mother Greely and Bro. Grant of this place, who are happy in Jesus. God is indeed working here. At the first service, three raised their hands for prayer and in the evening the Lord gave us a precious meeting, when four raised their hands for prayers. A good interest already started. We are expecting the Lord to do a glorious work here. We stay about three weeks and about the third week in Aug., or perhaps the last week, we start for Spokane, Wash. The way is opening Up nicely before us to go to that state. Let all pray for us and the work.

Yours in perfect love,

No. 13 Jolliffe St., Liverpool, Eng., July 20, 1893.

Dear Brethren in Christ: We rejoice this morning in the salvation of our God for keeping us saved and giving us victory over all the darkness and deceptions of this Gentile-age; for we find we are living in the time when the devil would deceive the very elect if it were possible. We closed the meeting at West Point, Pa. on the 18th of June with victory for our God although there is quite a prejudice in that country against the truth, agitated by ungodly professors, some pretending to be preachers of the gospel. May God show them the error of their way before it is too late. Several were saved and many won to the truth.

After bidding the dear ones farewell we took train for West Bruster, Mass., where we begun meeting in the name of our God on June 20, and continued until June 30. At this place we found many professing holiness, yet without the Spirit of God, and as the judgments of God went forth there were a few who were willing to walk in the light and truly the word of God was fulfilled. — Jer. 66:16 “For by fire and by his sword will the Lord plead with all flesh, and the slain of the Lord shall be many.” Yet we thank God for the remnant that made their escape by renouncing the anti-christ spirit they were under, and accepting the truth which made them free.

We left the above place for Liverpool, England where we are now holding forth the everlasting truth that makes us all free and one in Christ. We have rented a large house in the city in the name of Jesus, which is open for all God’s children, and all lovers of the truth. We have all things common, and trusting God for all things. There is much to do in this city. Oh that we had some of the money that is spent every day foolishly to buy bread and clothing for the poor in this city, and then we could talk salvation to them with much better success, for we find that a hungry man wants bread, but as we have not things as we some times think we would like and perhaps for our good. Then we say as Peter: “Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have I give thee.” Acts 3:6. Now dear ones pray for us and the work of the Lord in this country, and that we may never fail to declare the whole word of God regardless of our bread and what the people may say about us. This leaves us saved and encouraged to press forward until the end, realizing that only they who endure to the end shall be saved.

Yours in the body of Christ. Amen.

Center Point, Ia., July 29, 1893.

To the Saints of the Most High God: May the blessings of heaven rest upon you all according to God’s riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Not having reported in the columns of the Trumpet for some time I will give a brief sketch of Father’s dealing toward his unworthy child. Having a great desire to visit the churches in Iowa before returning west I left my dear family with our friends in Ill. and started for Manchester, Ia., July 7. According to previous arrangements with Bro. W. A. Haynes, who had been holding meetings at Hayesville in the tent, I met with that brother upon reaching Manchester. We thought that while visiting the church there and holding meetings for a while for the edifying and strengthening of the body of Christ, we could also give the city a thorough shaking up at the same time. We put up the tent in the center of the business part of the city. A few days after our arrival, Sister Luella Byers of Albany, Ill. joined our number. Also Sister Della Gardner and Sister Harrington of Masonville, Ia. were present to help in the battle. Bro. Harrington, Bro. and Sister Gardner and family also attended the meetings occasionally. We began the siege in the name of Jesus. The enemy soon began his defense. We had the disadvantage of bad weather the first week during which time the tent was blown down by a storm, but we had the faith that no storm could blow away, and put up the tent again in the name of Jesus. Held street-meetings and had large crowds. God wonderfully helped his servants to warn the people of their great danger. The inside meetings were also well attended.

We lost no time in visiting from house to house, distributing papers and tracts and teaching people individually whenever possible, sect- preachers not excepted. Were blessed with wonderful victory over all the powers of the enemy. A few sinners were awakened to repentance and received salvation. A number consecrated for entire sanctification. The church was greatly settled and established upon the immutable Word. Deep conviction attended the preaching of the gospel. Prejudice melted away before the consuming fire of holiness. Five obedient souls were baptized. Twenty-eight participated in the ordinance-meeting. The meeting closed July 27 with eternal results. Bro. Haynes has gone to Flag Springs, Mo. Sister Luella returned home yesterday. I left Manchester and came to this place. Met with the precious church last eve. Found all steadfast in the faith. A number are ready for baptism and also anxious to press into the standing grace. Expect to remain here a few days. This is where Sisters Fink and Shoffner and others labored a few weeks ago. From here I expect to visit the church at Dysart a few days, then after a short farewell to the church at Albany, Ill. we will begin to move westward as fast as God permits. Pray for the work in Iowa. Many faithful laborers are needed all through this state. God bless you all.

Your humble brother separated unto the gospel,

J. W. Byers.

Dear Trumpet Readers: God bless you all for Jesus’ sake. The camp-meeting closed the 23rd, with glorious results. The saints had thought they could not be ready by that time and announced a meeting at Poynor Mo., for Aug. 18. But they concluded to have it on the first announced time, so that meeting will be dropped from the list. Bro. Warner was expected, and some were disappointed, but God sent Bro. Wm. Wilson to aid and all were satisfied. There were over one-hundred consecrations and between fifty and sixty baptized. God’s wonderful power was present in converting and sanctifying and healing power confirming the word with signs following.

Among the cases of healing, two are wonderful. Sister Dismang’s little two-year old daughter was instantly healed of the third congestive chill after she was cold to her elbows and knees. In a few moments the mother carried it through the crowd whose countenances betrayed a mixture of amazement and gratitude. Hardhearted sinners wept and believed and received remission of their sins. Also one little girl about thirteen years old possessed of devils was delivered by God’s almighty power. She would not allow the elders to come near and even their voices in talk disturbed her; and when they began to rebuke the devil they had to seize her and command the devil to release her. After which she calmly arose and walked from her tent to the pavillion and testified to her deliverance. Many others received help and one young man was sanctified and healed in the last stage of consumption. He was very weak, but he received witness and strength enough to make him leap and praise God. O glory to God! The Lord was with us in convincing and convicting power all through the meeting. Bro. Barker, from Poplar Bluff, was used of the Lord in anointing the sick. God bless all the holy brethren and keep them true.

Yours in the Lord,

A. B. Stanberry.

Dear Saints of the Lord: I feel led to write my testimony. I am praising God for a free and perfect salvation that keeps me every moment of my life. The dear Lord has wonderfully changed my heart; he has taken away all desire for worldly pleasures. I can truly say, This world has no charms for me: my whole desire is to do the will of my blessed Master and ever live low and humble at his feet. I like the GOSPEL TRUMPET very much and love to read the many testimonies I receive through it. I desire the prayers of all the saints that I may ever be kept by the power of God and at last receive a crown of righteousness, which is promised to all those who endure unto the end.

MY TESTIMONY.

_____

Grand Junction, Mich.

Dear Saints and Trumpet-Readers: May much peace and grace be added unto the servants of the Most High. I am praising God for a full and a complete salvation which enables me to live without sin. Oh I do rejoice in the love of God! Some years ago the Lord saved my soul, but my life was not wholly devoted to Him as it should have been, so I did not grow in grace as it was my privilege. A little over two years ago the Lord wonderfully led me in this glorious evening light, and now I realize I am doing the whole will of God, and growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ each day.

After God had forgiven me of my sins, I presented my body a living sacrifice according to Rom. 12; 1, 2, and the Lord wonderfully sanctified my soul, taking out the “root of bitterness;” the evil nature which caused me to sin against God in the first place. Many say we cannot get rid of that evil nature and be sanctified wholly until death, but in the word of God we read, “Every plant that my heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up:” Matt. 15:13, and it must be done here, that we may be able to obey the teaching spoken of in Titus 2:12. — We should live soberly, righteously and godly in this present world. Well truly I enjoy the service of God better than the pleasures of the world which are but for a moment. For indeed, “His yoke is easy, his burden is light.”

I also wish to testify to the healing of my body. My blood was badly out of order and as a result erysipelas and other diseases had started upon me. Bro. Cole was with us at the time holding meetings, and teaching on the line of faith. Consequently my faith was greatly strengthened. I was glad the affliction had come upon me, that my faith might be exercised as the Lord had already increased my faith and healed my face which was broken out with sores a few days previous. So I called for the elders [Jas. 5:14], and had them pray for me, anointing me with oil and laying on hands in the name of the Lord Jesus, and he healed me that very hour. Oh praise the Lord! For we have not a high priest (mediator) which cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities. — Heb. 4:15. The day of miracles will not pass away while God has a people upon the earth and God’s mercy lasts, for he says, These signs shall follow them that believe, etc. — Mar. 16:17, 18. To God be all the glory.

Your brother in the body of Christ,

A WONDERFUL DELIVERANCE.

_____

FOR the benefit of suffering humanity, I will give my experience in regard to divine healing of the body, in connection with my experience of salvation, hoping to point others to Jesus, our life and our saving health among all nations.

I was born Aug. 23, 1853, in the state of Iowa, Three years later my parents settled in the state of Missouri, in the county, of Pettis, two miles north-east of Windsor, where I remained nutill I was twenty-seven years of age. My years were almost an unbroken chain of suffering. Myself and God alone knew the extent of my afflictions which began in my childhood.

I had spasms from the time I six years of age, also dyspepsia set in near the same time, and in all my travels I have not witnessed a more severe case. In a few years spinal affection added much pain to my afflicted body, and with many other diseases and weaknesses, was confined to my bed for months, at different times. All this combined with a stammering tongue, made my life miserable.

I was never able to do any hard work, not even washing for myself, and the physicians gave me no promise of future health. Many times I would weep and lament, and wonder why God had ever permitted me to live. My dear, good Christian mother would try to cheer me, and tell me that we should not question the ways of the Almighty, and that God had a bright design in all this. But that was a mystery which God alone could solve, and it failed to remove the sadness or the pain.

All was dark, so dark to me, for I could not look out in the future with one bright hope. But in my nineteenth year, May 3, 1872, having repented of my sins, received Jesus as my Savior, and his Spirit bore witness with my spirit, that I was a child of God. On the fourth day of the following month, I made a complete consecration for time and eternity, and was sanctified wholly. Since then I have been “perfected in holiness,’’ “growing in grace.”

Having been taught that the time of healing was past, I did not seek for it, but came to the conclusion that I was to be made perfect through suffering, as I knew of no one who had ever been healed, until the spring of 1880. My oldest brother being greatly afflicted with chronic diseases was healed in answer to prayer, without medicine, just by faith in the promises of the Word of God. I could not doubt it, but thought it was not for me. After some months God showed me that I had faith to be healed, and that I was responsible, and if I put in the rest of my life suffering, I did it by choice, and at the risk of my soul. I pondered over this matter for some days. On waking one morning I said to myself, “I am going to let the Lord heal me to-day if he will.” Then the enemy whispered, You should put it off a week or two, as you have not enough faith yet to be healed, and by that time your faith will be strong.

Next came the voice of Jesus, saying, “Oh! thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?” Then dropping on my knees, I cried: Lord if it is unbelief, take it out, root and branch; and I knew he did. Then I said, Lord, what next? And he showed me that I should pour out my medicine. I did not know why. Then God revealed to me that I was going to be severely tempted, and if I had the medicine, I would be sure to take it, and lose faith for healing. So I poured out the medicine. God showed me that if I were to doubt his word that says, “Who healeth all thy diseases.” “The prayer of faith shall save the sick,” etc., I would not stop until I would reject it all; would die an infidel; be lost in hell, and be the means of scores of others being lost. I said to mother, “If you ever prayed earnestly for me, pray for me now.” So we bowed together in prayer. After she prayed, I began praying, and claimed the promise in Matt. 18:19. I said, Lord, thou hast said: That if two shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done unto them of my Father which is in heaven. Now Lord we are agreed that thou heal me, soul, body, and mind, as complete as is most to thy glory. And as I said it I laid hold on the healing power, and the witness came from heaven that the work was done. I arose from my knees, saying, mother it is done; I am healed. I felt the virtue go through my body, and oh, the showers of heavenly grace that filled my soul! I began to praise the Lord, and shouted, giving God the glory. Oh it was so heavenly. “My soul was joyful in glory,” for glory filled my soul. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, saying: “Then shall the lame man leap as a hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.” — Isa. 35:6.

This was the beginning of a new era in my life. And I remarked that it was the beginning of months to me, as it was the first time in my recollection that I could say I was well. It was the first bright hope of health that I ever had in this world. The same day I could eat and drink anything that was. fit for a sound stomach, without the slightest injury, which I could never do before.

That night the trial came. It seemed that all hell was let loose to try to beat me out of my healing faith, and bring back all my old chronic diseases. Had I not poured out my medicine, surely I would have yielded; but I clung to the promises of God, and rebuked the devil until nearly morning; so God fulfilled this promise, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you,” Then there was a great calm. It seemed almost that angels came and ministered unto me. “My joy was full; my cup ran over.” My faith was strong and steady; my appetite good. I walked the floor for several days, with almost ceaseless praises going up to God.

It was circulated through the neighborhood that “Mary Cole was having a whole camp-meeting by herself. She claimed that God had healed her, but it was only excitement, and as soon as the excitement was over she would be as bad off as ever.”

My strength increased steadily and I soon went to a protracted-meeting held by the M. E’s., as I was then a member of that sect. When opportunity was given for testimonies, I arose and told of God’s wonderful dealings with me; how he had pardoned all my sins; made me his child, and afterwards sanctified me wholly; and had so recently healed my poor, afflicted body. And I exhorted the people to get rid of their unbelief, and to move out for God on the Bible line. But the preacher came to talk with me about the matter, and said he did not doubt my being healed, but I must not testify to it, for it was too much light for the people, and I must keep still about it, etc.

I then concluded that I would not testify any more to my healing. From that moment the flood-gate of hell was open. Gross darkness was upon me. The powers of hell were fast gathering to destroy both soul and body; my mind was almost reeling; intense suffering began in my body. O it was indescribable! God showed me that I had broken my contract to please the blinded sect-preacher; and that I must renew my contract with God, and resist the devil, obey God in all things and all would be well. So I did, and my soul was at liberty. My faith was again unwavering, and my strength increasing. A large scrofulous ulcer on my face was soon gone; my blood pure, and such warmth in my system, I had never felt before. It did not require one-half as much cover as usual to keep me warm.

I stammer some yet, but nothing to what I did before I was healed. God made me understand a few years before, that in the future I must go and preach his gospel. This was again made plain to me when I was healed on the fifteenth day of November, 1880.

He did not show me that I was to go yet; but to search and study the Bible.

It was wonderful how the Holy Spirit did teach me, and open my understanding to comprehend the Word of God.

In the spring of 1882 the way was open for me to go out in the vineyard of the Lord, and he showed me that I must go. I could go and be saved, or stay and be lost. I was still a Methodist. They did not license a woman to preach. But the sect-preachers found that God could use me in the salvation of souls, and that I was not specially interested in building up any certain sect; so I had an abundance of calls. Sometimes I would preach twice a day during the week, and three times on Sunday, and also attend the altar services. God always gave me sufficient strength. After a few years all sectarian scales fell from my eyes. I asserted my liberty and have been preaching the pure Gospel on the New Testament line.

I have had a few sick brashes since I was first healed. But God has healed me every time without resorting to doctors or medicine. I am well, soul and body, and can do washings, or hard work of any kind that God requires of me. I recommend my Savior as a Physician for soul and body.

WHY JESUS CHRIST SUFFERED.

_____

IT appears to me plain, when Jesus thus endured the cross, despising the shame, that he surely had some grand object in view; that there was some end which he hoped to attain by his suffering, some reward, which he proposed to himself, as a full compensation for all this pain and shame. If we read Heb. 13:..2, it will tell us that it was for the joy which was set before him. And what was this joy? The question may be readily answered. It was the joy of saving sinners, the joy of delivering innumerable souls from the bondage of sin and Satan, and of bringing them to everlasting happiness. He saw the miserable state into which sin had plunged the race of Adam, and was touched with pity for them. He saw that they had no power of delivering themselves out of their lost condition, that they could do nothing to atone for their guilt, and to make their peace with God; and that if left to themselves they must forever suffer the dreadful punishment which their sins deserved. He saw these things; but at the same time he knew that what they could not do for themselves, he could do for them. He knew that by his suffering and obedience unto death, the death of the cross, he could make a full and perfect sacrifice and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world. He knew that the Father would graciously accept this sacrifice, and for the sake of this satisfaction would pardon sinners and would receive them to his favor. Here then we see why Jesus suffered thus. We discover the object which he had in view. He looked forward to the consequences of his suffering. He foresaw the blessed effects which would follow it. He foresaw that by his stripes we should be healed: that by the pain which He endured we should be saved from eternal pain, that by the shame to which he submitted we should be saved from everlasting shame and raised to high and endless glory. He looked forward to that day when the ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with songs, when that great multitude, whom no man can number having washed their garments in the blood of the Lamb, shall be presented by him faultless, before the presence of his Father with exceeding joy. This was the reward which He proposed to himself. This was the end. for the attainment of which he bled and suffered and died. This was the joy set before Him, for which he endured the cross despising the shame.

HIS CHOSEN ONES.

_____

I am the true vine and my Father is the husbandman. — Jno. 15:1. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you and ordained you, etc. Here we see that when God calls one to the ministry, God himself gives the increase. The great work of preaching Christ’s gospel is not of man’s own choice, for it is contrary to the carnal nature, but Jesus knows whom to call. He knows where to find a will that he can bring into subjection to his own divine will, that he can work in and through his chosen vessel to bring forth much fruit to his own glory.

It is not the man that preaches Christ and him crucified to a perishing world of lost humanity, but one that dwelleth within the house of clay, over which the great potter has perfect control, bringing every thought into subjection to his holy will. Such a preacher has power with God to prevail in behalf of lost sinners. To influence all that will believe in Christ to bring them to the foot of the cross, while Jesus will in no wise cast anyone away. Many will turn to Christ and find out for themselves that there is reality in the religion of Christ and the preaching of the gospel of Christ is the power of God to all that believe. God is the power, not the man. The strength and substance and life is rom the true vine. The branch only brings forth the good fruit, and God declares it shall remain. This chosen vessel has the right to ask of the Lord anything according to his divine will, and it shall be done unto him. This is his privilege, for he is a coworker with God. What a blessing such a one is to suffering humanity, both for soul and body, for even the very devils must be cast out at his bidding, only in the name of Jesus. For Christ left his gospel and its works with such men of God, not hirelings. I pray that God will endue with power from on high all of his Saints to work while it is day.

THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL.

Dear Trumpet Readers: our testimony is this morning that we are saved and sanctified and kept by the power of God. Praise the Lord! He has been so good to me, it seems that the very dews of heaven fall upon us. Our little band consists of about eighteen. We have glorious prayer- meetings every Friday night. Sunday morning at ten o’clock, we have meeting at the school-house. The sects are still persecuting the saints of God. We only praise God for help, in time of need. He is able to help and none can hinder. Glory to God! We will trust him day by day.

Dear Saints of God: I am praising God for a full and free salvation that keeps me saved. It will be one year next Oct. since I was saved, and sanctified a few days afterward, and now I am living free from sin and it takes away every desire for the world. I used to think and say before I got saved that it was no use to get saved for I could not keep saved. But I do praise God so much that I have a salvation that just keeps me. I read the Bible a good deal before, but did not understand it, and would have my mind on the things of this world while reading, but now it seems so plain to me and I do have so much love for the Bible. I make it my study. I could not understand before how we could live without sin, but I do now, praise the Lord. Father has been saved for several years and we have had the Trumpet in our family for about six years, but I never read it until after I was saved. I do just love the Trumpet now, cannot hardly wait until it comes. Bro. Henry and Bro. and Sister Rupert came to our place just about the time I was going to join the Mennonite sect. They explained to me the wrong of it, and I kept out of it. I have three unsaved brothers. I do ask all the saints to pray for them. We lost our dear mother last winter. She was saved and ready to go. I do pray the Lord to send some of his dear saints here to preach the true gospel. I think there could be a good work done here.

Dear Brethren: Since I have been corresponding with you for some time you would probably like to know whether I am a Christian or not. I can say to the glory of God that I am a child of God, saved, and a believer in full salvation, in divine healing of soul and body, in justification and sanctification. It was two years ago the 5th of April since I was converted. I was then sick soul and body. I had been sick with the dropsy for over three years and sought some of the best docters of U. S. A. and taken many different kinds of medicine, all in vain, until I sought the great Physician, Jesus Christ, who heals all our diseases. Dear Bro. Peterson laid his hands on my head and anointed me according to the scripture, in the name of Jesus. I was not made strong at once, but after four months I was able to do light work. Six months from the time I was anointed I was as strong as I had ever been. Praise God! I have since that time been permitted to be sick and I asked God why it was. The answer came that it was to draw me nearer to God, to understand and do his will. I have not read anything on the subject of divine healing that could so correspond with my experience as that of Bro. E. E. Byrum. His experience and mine have been just the same. Now a few words on the church here. There is a small body of saints here who do not belong to any sect. We have no hired preacher, but work according as the Holy Spirit leads. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Yours in Christ.

“We overcome by the blood of the Lamb, and the word of our testimony.” Five years ago the twenty- second of last April, the Lord forgave all of my sins, and rolled the burden of guilt and condemnation away. Truly I could say that up to that time, it was the happiest day I had spent in all my life. Now I could look up to God and call him my Father. How sweet to be God’s child. This experience God gave me while in sectism. At that time I knew nothing about the evening light, or that there were such a people as the saints of God. But as I was willing to be anything or nothing for Jesus, walking up to all the light I had, God kept me with peace in my soul. In just about a year from the time I was justified, the glorious evening light dawned in upon us. A company of happy saints came to our home, where they held meeting. And to my happy surprise, they came preaching just what I had been praying for, and just what my soul was longing after. God was answering prayer. The second sermon I heard preached in the evening light was on sanctification. By the time the sermon was delivered 1 was ready to consecrate all to God, which T did and obtained the glorious experience of sanctification in my soul. Oh the light that now flooded my soul! it was more glorious than the first. Now came a separation from all the world. I know not how to tell you to make it any plainer than this: if there had not been a living soul around me, I could have been no more cut loose from the world: it seemed I was all alone with Jesus. In this God showed me how I should live for him. Live for him though all the world forsake me, live all alone for Jesus. Praise his dear name! When the cause of sin was taken out of my heart, then the practices of such things as pertain to the carnal nature were taken out of my life. Such as pride, division, or the sin of sectism. I now became plain, a meek, humble child of God as far as I had received the light. Since that time many lessons, dear and precious, have I learned. God is such a wonderful teacher.

As I lived on for God, asking and inquiring of him: Lord what could I do that would be the means of saving other souls? How could I be useful in your hands, Lord? Not quite two years ago the Lord opened up the way that I might spend all my time in his service. And it was in this way: I took my Bible and went to my room, and began to read and meditate upon His word, and he laid his hand upon me and said, I have taken you captive for the GOSPEL TRUMPET office. What could I do now, but ask him of what use I would be there, and he showed me several things that I could do and when I reached the office, I found it just as he had showed me. I am now busy setting type for the Lord day after day. Now God may not call every one just as he did me, but obey God at the smallest whisper of his voice. It pays to obey God.

I feel like it would glorify God by testifying to the healing of the body as well as the soul. Last Sabbath I was taken with a severe headache and nervous prostration and it kept getting worse until I felt that some kind of fever was fastening upon me. When I would lie down for awhile and then raise to my feet, such a dizzy sensation would come over me that I could not stand up for awhile. But last night I obeyed God’s word, and his mighty hand swept the disease all away and to-night I am well, healed soul and body. My experience in the service of the Lord is getting brighter, shining more and more. God’s word says, The path of the just is as a shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. — Prov. 4:18.

Your sister saved just now,

Melissa Carpenter.
