Your Mission.

_____

Hark! the voice of Jesus crying,
“Who will go and work to day?
Fields are white and harvest waiting,
Who will bear the sheaves away”?
Loud and strong the Master calleth,
Rich reward he offers thee;
Who will answer gladly, saying,
Here am I, send me, send me?

If you cannot cross the ocean
And the heathen lands explore,
You can find the heathen nearer,
You can find them at your door.
If you cannot give your thousands
You can give the widow’s mite,
And the least you do for Jesus
Will be precious in his sight.

If you cannot speak like angels,
If you cannot preach like Paul,
You can tell the love of Jesus,
You can say he died for all.
If you cannot rouse the wicked
With the judgment’s dread alarm,
You can lead the little children
To the Savior’s waiting arms.

If you cannot be the watchmen
Standing high on Zion’s walls,
Pointing out the path to heaven,
Offering life and peace to all;
With your prayers and with your bounties,
You can do what heaven demands;
You can be like faithful Aaron,
Holding up the prophet’s hands.

If among the older people
You may not be apt to teach;
“Feed my lambs, said Christ our Shepherd,
Place the food within their reach;”
And it may be that the children
You have led with trembling hand,
Will be found among your jewels
When you reach that better land.

Let none hear you idly saying,
“There is nothing I can do,”
While the souls of men are dying,
And the Master calls for you;
Take the task he gives you gladly
Let his work your pleasure be;
Answer quickly when he calleth.
Here am I, send me, send me.

THE NEED OF WATCHING AND PRAYING.

_____

Take ye heed, watch and pray, for ye know not when the time is. Mark 13:33. There is an idea gone forth in the land, and being taught by some who are deceived of the devil, that it is impossible to fall from grace after being sanctified. Just a little common sense with reason is sufficient to show plainly that this is a deception of the enemy, and not according to the word of God; but is only gotten up by false teachers, and supposed by the devil, to deceive precious souls, and lead them down the broad way to hell. We warn all in the name of Jesus Christ, and hope that none who are honest, and desire to make sure work for heaven, will be deceived or led astray by such teaching. Also pray that God will deliver all who are honestly deceived and desire to know the right way. The very idea set forth in Heb. 6:6, — If they shall fall away, plainly shows that there is a liability of falling, if we do not the whole will of God. This one text alone is sufficient to prove that it is possible even after being partakers of the Holy Ghost: and the warnings given by Christ himself, also by the apostles, are enough to show that there is danger of falling at any time, if we fail to watch and pray. We learn in Rom. 15:16, and 2 Thess. 2:13, that the Holy Spirit is the sanctifier. Yet Paul who had received it (which guides into all truth), says, “If they shall fall away,” showing that it is possible. But say some, He hath perfected forever them that are sanctified. Heb. 10:14. That is very true, and has been since the day of pentecost, and will be till the end of time, even forever. Praise the Lord! But if they fall they are neither sanctified nor perfect. Both verses Heb. 6:6, and 10:14 are the language of Paul: and there is no question as to him having the Holy Spirit which guides into all truth, no error, consequently no contradiction, but in perfect harmony when rightly understood. Wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom, and with all thy getting get understanding. Prov. 4:7. For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. 2 Pet. 2:20, 21. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth. take heed, lest he fall. 1 Cor. 10:12. As long as there are temptations we have power to yield if we will. But thank the Lord, we have no desire to disobey him. Yet some in time of severe trials and temptations do yield and transgress the law of God, just as Ad am did, and “the soul that sinneth it shall die;” consequently they fall into condemnation and a snare of the devil.

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptations. Matt. 26:41. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, and to virtue knowledge, and to knowledge temperance, and to temperance patience, and to patience godliness, and to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness charity. * * * * Give diligence to make your calling and election sure, for if ye do these things ye shall never fall. 2 Pet. 1:5-10. By exhorting the saints to be c diligent and do these things, implies that if they do not these things they would be liable to fall. We are free moral agents and have power given us to choose whom we will serve; and that is not taken away in this world only from those who have committed the unpardonable sin, or placed themselves where they will forever have no conviction to turn to God. If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death: there is a sin unto death; I do not say that he shall pray for it. 1 Jno. 5:16. But some people say it is impossible to be renewed after falling. He says he will give life to those who sin not unto death. Paul says of a certain class, that it is impossible to renew them again unto repentance. It is very dangerous indeed to go back after being saved. If a person willingly turns from the Lord after he is saved and strives against the Holy Spirit, and hath trodden under foot the son of God and hath counted the blood of the covenant wherewith he was sanctified [had been sanctified], an unholy thing and hath done despite unto the spirit of grace, Heb. 10:29, then he is in a critical condition indeed. For the Lord said, My Spirit shall not always strive with man. Gen. 6:3. As long as God’s Spirit has not departed there is hope. Lord help dear souls to take warning and grieve not the Holy Spirit! When the sin is not unto death, the command is, Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works. Rev. 2:5. Turn, O backsliding children, saith the Lord, for I am married unto you. Jer. 3:14. I will heal their backsliding: I will love them freely. Hos. 14:4.

Dear unsaved souls, who have wandered away from Father’s house, do as the prodigal, arise and come to the Savior, he will heal your backsliding, and restore unto you the joys of salvation. Praise his holy name forever! And to all that are saved, watch and pray. Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free: and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Gal. 5:1. Well, because of unbelief they were broken off: and thou standest by faith: be not high- minded but fear: for if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. Rom. 11:20, 21. Ye therefore beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness. 2 Pet. 3:17. The word “steadfastness,” shows plainly that they were in the standing or sanctifying grace. The next verse says, Grow in grace, etc. So they were in grace, for they could not grow in grace until they got into it. Yet they were warned to beware lest they fall. The doctrine alone, “that we cannot fall,” is enough to overthrow all who believe it. We are only redeemed when fully saved, in the image of God, just as Adam was; and all that transgress the law of God (commit sin) will fall into condemnation even as he did. When I shall say to the righteous that he shall surely live: if he trust to his own righteousness and commit iniquity, all his righteousness shall not be remembered, but for his iniquity that he hath committed he shall die for it. Ezek. 33:13. Another scripture that is used to try to prove it impossible to fall, is 1 Jno. 3:9. — Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin, for his seed remaineth in him and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. Very true; we know that no man can sin and be a child of God at the same time, not even converted, for he that committeth sin is of the devil; consequently not of God, for one is opposite to the other. No one can sin and be a child of God, no more than he can be a saint and a sinner at the same time. Ye cannot serve two masters, and he that committeth sin is the servant of sin. My little children, these things write I unto you that ye sin not; and if any man sin we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, 1 Jno. 2:1. Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth and one convert him, let him know that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. James 5:19, 20. You see, as soon as one sins or errs from the truth, James calls him a sinner, before he sins he said “brethren,” but thank the Lord for a chance to be converted again. I know this by my own experience. After I was first saved, through neglect of duty I lost my salvation. The Lord called me to preach the gospel, and I did not want to do it and hesitated to obey the Lord. Therefore to him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin. James 4:17. The result was, I became lukewarm, and before I was aware the Lord spewed me out of his mouth (his body, the church), and yet when I had opportunity, I was more than willing to repent and do the first works. The Lord received me and abundantly pardoned me, and put me in the body (church) as it pleased him. Praise his name forever! I am now in the one body and very thankful indeed for it and I am glad and rejoice to do the will of God. And if I continue to do these things I shall never fall.

I write this for the glory of God as a warning to all who are exposed to the teaching that we cannot fall, that you may take heed and watch and pray, and keep clear from such teaching. If any man teach otherwise and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ and to the doctrine which is according to godliness, he is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions, and strifes of words whereof cometh envy, strifes, railings, evil surmisings, perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness; from such withdraw thyself. 1 Tim. 4:3-5. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. Luke 21:36. And what I say unto you I say unto all. Watch. Mark 13:37. Now unto him that i; able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Savior be glory and majesty, dominion and power both now and forever. Amen. Jude 24, 25.

TO THE CHILDREN OF GOD.

_____

1 John 5:21. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. Also verse 4, For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world. We look around us and see precious souls who are in bondage to the abominable corset; souls who know that the word says whosoever Christ maketh free is free indeed and is without condemnation. I say abomniable, for I wore one, and oh the back aches, neck aches and shoulder aches that it caused me to endure, and I know what I am talking about. Yet we see those who say they are saved and sanctified and walking in the light as he is in the light, saying that they cannot leave it off. Why? For the same reason that the tobacco slave thinks he cannot leave off his tobacco. I would to God, that if he has not already, that he would convict every soul that wears a corset as he did me. It was during a meeting being held by the saints about two years ago, although there was nothing said in the meeting against such things, and the brother’s wife, while he was holding the meeting, wore one. God from some cause wonderfully convicted me and told me I had to lay it off or lose my salvation, and when I tried to excuse myself to God by telling him I was so poor, that I would look miserable without it. Also that this brother and sister who were teachers, if she could stand approved of God as a teacher, why could not I. And then the answer would come, Who art thou that repliest against God? shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Oh glory to Jesus for the Holy Spirit! I laid it off and told God to make me perfectly satisfied with my form as he created me, and he did so. I think my corset was about as hard a thing as I had to give up, and I see others who are about the same way. I know two dear souls who have made their lives miserable, and they had about given up the abominable thing. We were much grieved when during a meeting which was being held, in which a brother’s wife who is also a teacher wore one, that these dear souls lost sight of Christ on this point and put on the thing again that had caused so much misery. Oh, if dear souls would only keep their eyes on Christ and only follow their brethren and sisters as they follow Christ!

Now the word says, Love not the world, neither the things that are in world, if any man love the world the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life is not of the Father, but of the world. — 1 Jno. 2:16, 17. O be as obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to your former lusts in your ignorance. — 1 Pet. 1:14. I remember one instance where God wanted me to tell how I was saved from tea, coffee and my corset. There was a brother there whose wife wore one; he jumped up and said it was all right if God had showed this to us, but we should not lay down a rule for others to walk by. Now I had not laid down any rule. I simply told them what God had done for me and what he wanted me to tell for his glory, and there was a dear sister there that I believe laid off her corset from that day, and that man continued to get more lean in his soul, until to day he seldom meets with the children of God to worship. God does not want any golden wedges hid away. 2 Cor. 13:11. — Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you. 1 Cor. 1:10. Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

Beloved brethren and sisters, we may as well expect God’s cause to prosper as it should, if we would continue to wear our jewelry and ruffles and feathers and all the unnecessaries, when they are once brought before the minds of the people, as to expect God’s cause to prosper as it should when we will not put away this accursed thing from among us, which is very injurious to the temple, which God created for his own dwelling. It has been stated, that if all the evils were known, that the corset inflicts on humanity, it would be found to rank with those of tobacco and whiskey.

No brother who is saved in this evening light would think (as plain as the word is taught) that he could keep saved and still continue to use tobacco and whiskey. Now the word says that we should make straight paths for our feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way, but let it rather be healed. Even sinners’ eyes are not closed concerning these facts. I have known men and women who were straight for God come and teach and show us and condemn these evils in the sight of all the people, and may be the next one that came amongst us had not laid them all down. Now dear sisters, perhaps this will be strong meat for some of you, but do not let the adversary get the advantage of you and condemn me for writing this, but go before God in earnest prayer and he will soon show you what to do, and if you obey him. the freedom you can enjoy in your souls and in your lungs, when you sing God’s praises, you will say as I did that you will never again be bound to the goddess of fashion. Amen and amen.

Dear Brethren: I feel led to write my testimony this morning. I am saved and sanctified wholly and kept by the power of God, and do realize deep down in my soul that his grace is sufficient for all things. Praise his holy name! He keeps me well and prospering both bodily and spiritually. Six years ago he wonderfully healed my body, and he has been my physician ever since. I desire the prayers of all the saints. And pray that my wife may be sanctified.

FROM THE CHILDREN’S HOME.

_____

Mar. 24, 1893.

To the Beloved Readers of the Trumpet, Greeting: I am praising God fora continuation of his love in my soul, and that he keeps me so sweetly saved, praise his dear name. Many are anxious to know what we are doing. Well we are serving God with all our soul, mind and strength. On the 11th of March we took train for Muskegon, where we met the congregation at Little Black Lake, on the 12th. The Lord blessed us in preaching his word, which resulted in much good in the salvation of precious souls and the edifying and strengthening of the church. Dear Bro. Kriebel assisted in the meeting. He still remained after our return. Well in regard to the house, we are ready to commence the building. The Lord willing, we expect to commence on the addition to the boarding house, 26×28, two stories high, to be used for camp meetings and for the children. A word of advice to all whom it may concern: remember, dearly beloved, that it takes means, labor and time to bring about such an enterprise. Do not send your children on until all things are ready, and remember this home is not for those who want to get rid of the care and responsibility of raising their children, but for orphans, whose parents loved and served God, and for children whose parents are actually called of God and sent and have proved themselves true to the ministry. This home will also admit widows who come under the scripture of Paul to Tim. 5:9, 10. Dearly beloved, I feel that God has specially called me to this work and that I devote my time and means, and seek no selfish end, and all who desire to aid in this work, remember this is not on my ground or on yours, but on the Lord’s. There is a legal lease for ninty-nine years and no individual can claim or drive off. So whatever means are put in for this purpose must be used for the Lord. God bless all in responding to this work.

Yours in Him,

S. Michels.

MY EXPERIENCE.

_____

(Continued from last issue.)

_____

In the evening I confessed in the public prayer meeting what I had been and that I was a child of God now, but wanted a real Bible experience with sweeping victory in my soul, viz: sanctification. The sacrifice was examined by God’s faithful servants, showing and instructing me on sanctification, that all may cover the ground. When I humiliated myself and went to the altar and broke down with sobbing and weeping I was shaken soul and body, and could feel all the powers of hell trying to crush me and keep me back. I knelt there, presenting myself a living sacrifice, laying all on the altar what I could think of and what I probably did not think of — all that might come up in the future; all on the altar, reputation, world, flesh, discontentment, grumbling, everything, at last my whole self with my exalted spirit and high mind. Oh what a fire was kindled there, how it did burn so mightily, burning up all the dross and my whole self! It was a hard dying and I was shaken through and through when hands were laid on me to clear up my case entirely. Oh it was a fearful death to go through but yet sweet and precious was the resurrection. All heaven rejoiced that night and all devils were mad. Oh bless the Lord! God has done a complete, a powerful, wonderful work and has swept out all carnality and cleansed his sanctuary. The Spirit got such a hold of me, and with sweeping victory and a transparent experience in my soul, that I began to jump and leap for joy as I never had done before in my life. I could not help but leap and shout all evening. All the saints of God rejoiced with me. Oh how I loved and kissed the brethren, while before this I had no desire to greet them with a holy kiss.

As I am writing this, inspired by the Holy Spirit I wish I could embrace and greet all the dear brethren who read this and show indeed the love of Christ now reigning within me. Three days after this glorious evening were sufficient for the brethren to see the entire change. One said I need not tell anybody I was saved and sanctified, they could all see it. That I am willing to make all wrongs ever done right, is but natural. Oh glory, glory, glory! It fills my whole being with glory. I am saved through the blood, sanctified and satisfied fully in Jesus. God is love indeed and his love must be in all those that are his. No more uprising, as I used to get angry at very little occurrences and things; no more fault finding, how sweet, how precious! I know that in all sects (I have been in a half dozen including Alliances) they have no such thing; how barren, how cold is even their sanctification even of their four-fold gospel, in which you have to be friends to all sects which are as they bear not the name saints of God, which is the Bible name for his people in his church, for we are either saints or sinners. Paul in writing to the children of God at the various places always wrote to the church of God and not to some so-called churches, such as Lutherans, Methodists, Baptists, Alliances. Bless his dear name! I had times before I heard the evening light when I believed that the different denominations, sect-churches with their worldly ways were not THE CHURCH OF GOD but for a while I thought the Christian Alliance was surely the very church. This Alliance is covering and filling out a want in Babylon, where and because the sect people do not feel satisfied with and in their sects, therefore they go to this Alliance to get more spirituality there. While some good people among them are doing some wonders in the line of healing, etc., yet we also know that their creed is not of God, only an intellectual and fashionable make up. They let their members at ease about the sects; you can serve God and the world there and their meetings are formal. If they would preach, Come out of the sects, shake all yokes off, belong to nothing but Christ and be at home where his children are, God would work through them, but as it is now, it is nothing but machinery. I do testify to the glory of God against all sects and against that one especially. May the Lord enlighten the dear souls that are in the Alliance and running down with her to destruction in the ways of the world and Babylon. If the children of God, they see any man err from the truth or not standing right, they fast and pray until the Lord is moved to clear his case up and bring him out. One meeting with the dear saints is worth more to me than a thousand in sectism. “Behold I make all things new. Therefore if any man be in Christ he is a new creature; old things are passed away, behold all things are become new.” Praise the Lord! If anything is true indeed it is this. The change with me is so miraculous that I cannot comprehend it. I always thought it was not right to tear down the sects and cut so sharp; well if the word does cut it is so much the better. I can say it cut me through and through and yet it was all done so quick and in such a short time. When the devil came and said, Well what are you going to do about the churches and the sects you belonged to? I rebuked him in the name of Jesus and said to the Lord I am going to do nothing. I left all so entirely in the hands of the Lord, all with him and he does it. He moves me to write against sin, the world and Babylon, and his grace is sufficient for me. Heaven’s windows are open and he is continually pouring blessings upon me. I used to know so much, now I know nothing but Christ crucified. The The greatest wonder is just this; that before this great change I always wanted to be something and now I am nothing, want nothing but to glorify my Savior. Oh the depths of the wisdom of God! I am given up to do his whole will, am wanting nothing. May no one ever see only Christ Jesus in me.

Glory to God! The greatest achievment of a full salvation through the entire cleansing, sanctification is the constant victory through the blood of Jesus — a victory overcoming the world, for he causeth us to triumph in his name, and while we keep looking unto Jesus, while he is our only thought and the salvation of other souls our only care, the devil has no more power over us. Praise the Lord! Before I had to keep very quiet about salvation, but now we have something to talk about. We want to expose the devil wherever we can and to make wrongs right. Before I was fully saved I had all the light about the true church of God for a while, but by and by the old enemy darkened my mind so much that I even wrote against the saints of God as being nothing but a sect too like all the others. Oh how shameful! But thanks to God, the things I loved to do I hate now and what I hated I love now. Amen. I do pity the poor deceived souls that the devil makes to enlist in the sect army, often for lifetime and oh, how do they know that God does want any such thing? Indeed God wants no one to be bound with chains of iron to sectism and egotism and other isms. I remember how I adored Dr. Talmage and other D. D’s. Now I see clearly that they are nothing but worldly gods, idols, fashionable preachers with a dead religion, keeping dear souls away from Christ, the real Bible Christ, giving them a modeled and fashioned idol, a code instead of the genuine Bible religion. Praise God that I can keep the light by the Holy Spirit now, and I rejoice about the sign of our time, that people are becoming more and more disgusted with the sects and tired of them just like God made me disgusted. The world shall know by the help of God that we have salvation. Yet I feel more than ever dependent on Jesus alone, because my haughty seif has been destroyed, for he said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further and here shall thy proud waves be stayed. It was fulfilled in my case.

Something wonderful was I permitted to go through last Sunday to suffer persecution for Christ’s sake, the first time in my life. Our dear brother Ebel and myself went out in the afternoon and talked about salvation. Soon we entered a little shed and prayed for our brethren. When we got through the proprietor came running and asked us what we were doing; he thought we were either crazy or murdering some one, and said we should pray on the road if we wanted to. I said I was willing to, and we wished him God’s blessing. Over this little trial I got so happy and filled with the Spirit of God I made a joyful noise, yea, I could not help but leap and shout. This stirred up some of the people who came running after us, and a constable wanted to arrest me for praising God on the Sabbath day. We tried to show him God’s love but he kept scolding and scoffing, and another one came with his horses ready to take us to the jail, but by the help of God he could not do it nor in any way hurt us. Finally he went back to his house, saying to us that we had devils in us. God have mercy on him, for the devil spoke out of him. This I relate to the honor of God, for it is just a start the devil made and no doubt some more will follow, but his grace is sufficient for us all.

Finally I wish to ask all the dear children of God to pray united in faith for the German work. The Lord showed us, that it is high time to bring to them the full gospel of the evening light in their own tongue, and if the Lord wills sooner or later also to the French, which are almost as numerously represented in this country as the Germans and in a far more pitiable condition. The precious book of Divine Healing, which the good Lord permitted me to translate into German, shall also be translated into French in the near future. As the Lord wants me here, which he showed plainer than before, and as I have fully disposed of my own will which was just contrary to the Lord’s I shall by divine help continue to translate gospel truth in this evening light, and write whatever the Holy Spirit may inspire me to his glory, and the salvation of dear souls. Oh may God abundantly bless his truth and grant the whole work a wider spread than ever before in English, German, and even French if possible, as it is surely his work and his will. Amen, it shall be done. Amen.

I remain your brother fully saved and wholly sanctified,

M. Dederer.

Willshire, O., March 25, 1893.

Dear Brethren: Great grace and peace be yours evermore. Amen. Perhaps the dear saints would like to hear from us here at Willshire again. I will just say that we are all abounding in the grace of God, realizing that the blessings of God flow here like a mighty river. Streams of glory, one after another, coming down from the glory world, making our hearts rejoice in God. Within the past two months some have been saved, and backsliders still returning to Father’s house. We have been visiting the little church at Decatur, Ind. Sorry to say that the devil had gotten the advantage of some and we found that the unity of the Spirit was broken; but glad to state that all were willing to measure themselves by the word, and square up wherein they lacked, and the sweet fellowship of the Spirit was again brought back. Last Lord’s day we met there for an ordinance meeting. Oh how blessed to obey the commands of Jesus! Truly God did verify his promises to us. Shouts and praises went up to God, and some had to cry out for joy, saying they never were so free before. Oh! it was wonderful, and indeed my soul did magnify the Lord and rejoice to see them drinking so freely. Oh I

did feel that surely salvation had come, for the accuser of those dear saints is cast down. And they have overcome him by the blood of the Lamb, and the word of their testimony, and now we have a right to rejoice, all heaven and all that dwell therein. Glory be to Jesus! During those two short meetings several were saved and two sanctified. Oh how I would love to be out more for Jesus! but on account of necessities at home I cannot go very much, only on Lord’s day. But bless the dear Lord, my soul is satisfied if God wants me to labor at the carpet loom all week, then sends me only on Saturdays and Sundays. I will say Amen to that, Lord. But will just say to those who have been sending for me to come to their place, I would be glad to come in the near future, but cannot come without means to come on. I would freely furnish my own means if I could. As for other expenses such as clothes, God gives me strength to work for.

Your sister in Christ,

Dear Brethren, Greeting: Since our last report we have held a successful series of meetings at Yellow Lake Bethel, about three miles south of Burket, Ind. The meetings were not very largely attended, owing to the great prejudice existing in the j hearts of the people; but of the few who attended, about fifteen souls gave their hearts to God and received salvation. Near the close of the meeting which lasted nearly three weeks the ordinances of feet washing and the Lord’s supper were observed. Thirty-eight saints participated. Five redeemed ones were buried with Christ by baptism. Bro. J. N. Howard, of Payne, Ohio was with us one week and mightily used of the Lord. On our way home we stopped with our sister Mrs. D. E. Ford, of Burkettsville, Ohio, a few days, during which time she gave her heart to God, and was anointed for the healing of her body of a serious ailment. Let all the saints engage with us in prayer to God for her, that her faith fail not. Pray for me.

Dear Saints of God: The meeting closed in Indiana with victory on the Lord’s side. A few more saved, some sanctified. We do pray for God to keep the little company pure, so they will walk in all the light, then they will have fellowship one with another. I got home on the 7th, left home the 11th for Burbank; commenced meeting the 14th. A few attended the first week; now we have a crowded house. We are holding on to God for souls; a few have acknowledged it is the truth. We do ask the prayers of all the saints that we be kept low at Jesus’ feet. I want to do the little things and get down in the deep things in his word. The Lord does bless his word. Bro. Ezra Smith met with a severe accident; he fell and broke his right leg about four inches above the knee. Truly when one member suffers, all the members suffer with him. We report perfect victory over every foe. The dear Lord be with all the saints and especially with the workers in the field. Amen.

Dear Saints of God: We are glad to report victory in the Lord in this part of the vineyard. The meeting at Pierce’s Chapel was very fruitful. The M. E. house was closed the third day of the meeting, but a way for meeting was opened in the same neighborhood. Many were freed from the great tobacco sin and seven dear ones made their escape out of Babylon. From there we went to Warm Springs, Ark. where the Lord blessed in holding forth the true gospel in the evening light for thirteen days and nights with good effect. The seed sown will doubtless result in a rich harvest. We closed, a ten days meeting at this place to day with good results. There were about ten consecrations and five baptized. There will be a camp meeting in this part if the Lord wills. The saints expect to build a meeting house soon. Pray for the work in this part.

Yours in the Lord,

To all the Saints of the Living God: This morning finds us saved with the love of God shed abroad in our hearts, and all on the altar for Jesus. We closed meetings at Broughton, O. last Sunday night; left a good impression upon the people. More came forward for pardon and some for the second work. Three followed the Lord in baptism on the Lord’s day. We left Broughton Monday and started on our way northward again. Expect to return to our place of former residence in Mich., and if the Lord will, we expect to still preach the word as we go. He has just been leading us all the way and has wonderfully blessed our labors this winter, and we give him all the glory. Praise the name of the Lord forever! Amen.

Your brother and sister all on the altar,

Dear Saints: The Lord bless you all. I praise God for the way he leads me and teaches me, and for this blessed evening light. My present experience is, I am saved. I feel like going through for Jesus on the Bible line. The devil may rage and roar on every side, but God’s grace is sufficient to carry us through. It seems I never realized as much as at present the need of standing straight for God in these last days. I thank God for a people that dealt honestly with my soul; and through them he let the light shine and I mean to walk in it. I desire the prayers of all the dear saints. I feel I need the blood of cleansing applied to my heart that the old carnal nature may be destroyed by a second work of grace.

Dear Saints: I want to say I am praising God for a present salvation, being saved and sanctified wholly. Amen. And now I feel to say with the Psalmist David 125:1, They that trust in the Lord shall be as Mt. Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth forever. Praise the Lord for the abiding I have deep down in my soul. It is now two years and past since wife and I came to this place; and during all this time we have labored hard for the salvation of precious souls in this very wicked city. Glad to know that a few honest ones have found the pearl of great price. Hallelujah! And yet there are many others that are rejecting this full and free salvation that is offered them with out money or price, only the price that Jesus demands — your whole heart unreserved. Now I do believe that if we had some one or two more of God’s fire baptized little ones here this spring, much might be done to bring others into this evening light holiness unto the Lord.

Yours in Christ, the body, saved to the uttermost,

Dear Saints: I praise the good Lord this evening for the salvation of my soul. It is just one year this evening since the dear Lord saved me, and I can say with an honest heart it has been the most joyful and peaceful time in my whole life. Oh glory to God for such a wonderful and complete salvation which sets men free from their sins and keeps them free. Once I was a faithful servant of the devil, but the dear Lord got hold of me and set my captive soul at liberty. Praise his name! Some time after my conversion, the question came to me, What church are you going to join? You better get a church home, and if you leave there, a letter will be given you which will open the way for you to any place in the church, and make you at home. After praying over the matter I left it in the Lord’s hands, and had no desire to join any thing but a lodge in which I was a member. But I had to leave it. The Lord (not man) showed me that I could not belong any longer to it. God’s spirit will guide us into all truth, and surely he did in my case. After I heard dear Brother Warner preaching at Los Angeles the dear Lord showed me that I have been already added to the church of God by the Lord himself. Oh how wonderfully the dear Lord has filled my soul ever since this time with peace and glory! Praise his name forever and ever! Nearly five weeks ago I came to this place, but had no letter written with ink or paper, but one in my heart with the precious blood of Jesus. The fellowship one with another gives them, the dear saints, a better testimony than letters can do. Some said after I was saved that if I would go on that way I would lose my mind; and glory to God, I did. I have now the mind of Jesus, which is so much better, and with the help of God I am going to keep it. I rejoice in this salvation, and my prayer is that many more would lose their minds and get the mind of Jesus.

Your brother in Christ, saved, sanctified and satisfied,

Wm. Ebel.

_____

To all the Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel led of God to add my testimony for the glory of God and and for some that are far away from the dear Savior, that there is saving power in Jesus. It is four years this month that I started out in the battle field for God, fighting against sin and the devil. I will tell you I am enjoying it gloriously. Praise his holy name! Although the devil has been trying to run me home. But as I know the tricks of Satan, I will lift my voice while I have breath, for I realize the wheat is ripe to harvest and the laborers are few. My prayer is, Lord send out more to rescue poor perishing souls from that awful place of torment.

This winter while we were amongst the Ozarks, my body became afflicted with heart disease. I had been healed a year before, but as that awful disease took hold on me I began to wonder why the dear Lord permitted it to come back on me. And I began to resist the devil and began to think it was his will for me to suffer; then the enemy told me I was not able to do my duty, and singing became a hard task. But yet I was willing to work for the Master, but I could do so little for him, and so I saw the trick of the enemy although I was brought down on my bed. Then I began to want to go home, for when I would try to do my duty I could not, so I began to see the devil was backing me down. I began to take the promises of God and believe him, so I called to have hands laid on for the healing of my body. So the Lord wonderfully touched my body with the mighty healing power and it went through my soul and my heart just like electricity, and for about an hour I felt the mighty power of God, and God showed me to write my testimony. I did not write it, so the enemy came to me and told me I was not healed. We had some severe battles to fight but Jesus helped us.

But since that time I had another attack of heart disease; it lasted for about three hours. It seemed I could not live, but the Lord showed me my work was not done yet, and the dear saints laid on hands and rebuked the affliction, and God raised me up. To him be all the glory. I will testify to the glory of God; and if I had obeyed the Lord in the winter the enemy would have had no chance to try me in the least. Disobedience will give the devil a chance to tantalize you as he did me. I promised God if he would heal me I would honor him and give him the glory. So all the children of God, if he shows us his will and we are careless, we may have to suffer. I write these lines hoping this will help you to keep out on the promises and under the blood, and willing to do all God wants you to. I am determined to profit by this lesson I learned, and I am determined to follow the leadings of his holy Spirit. I ain cut loose from all so-called worldly pleasures. I am in the narrow way, with complete victory in my soul over all the powers of darkness and am triumphant. I realize the enemy of our soul is trying to drag us down. Now all the dear saints pray earnestly for me that my body may keep in perfect health, and that I may be in the hands of God in winning many souls from darkness into this glorious light and liberty of the true gospel. I realize I am out on the sea of glass, with complete victory in my soul. I can say this morning to the glory of God, I am all sold out to Jesus. I realize I have a heaven in my soul to go to heaven in. My time is the Lord’s; what my hands find to do shall be done for God. Free! free! free! I am from sin set free! This world has now no charms for me, for Christ hath set me free.

I remain your little sister, saved and sanctified wholly, and ready for the coming of the Lord. Amen.

Dear Saints of God: May grace and truth abide with you all. I have felt impressed for a long time to write my testimony. I do praise God for salvation this afternoon, and for his blessed keeping power. O! it is wonderful how he has kept, and is keeping me, through trials and oppositions all the way. Truly the word is fulfilled in my case, that a man’s foes are those of his own household. I have a very wicked family to contend with, and it is strange that they are so wicked, and the hand of God laid so heavily upon some of them. My two oldest sons are afflicted with consumption, and two years ago I buried my third son with the same dreadful disease, but thanks be to God, he was saved before he died. The other two are not saved. I ask the prayers of all the saints that they may be saved, for O it is an awful thing to fall into the hands of the living God, and be ushered into eternity unprepared. They were at the Red Lion camp meeting last fall but did not yield to the many warnings of the Lord they heard there. My prayer is that they may be saved yet, for I fear their time is not long in this world. I have seven living children; my baby a boy three years old with a lame knee and cannot walk. I have a great many things to endure in this life, but out of all the Lord has promised to deliver me; and I mean to overcome by the grace of God, and the word of my testimony, for it is only those that endure unto the end that will be saved. Pray for me that I may be faithful unto the end, and for my afflicted family that they may be saved.

Dear Saints of the Most High: I feel it would be to the glory of God to tell of his wondrous love and power that Jesus has shown to me. While I have not in times past been true to God, he has been true to me, and I am praising God for salvation full and free just now, with the victory in my soul over the flesh and the devil. I have been afflicted for about seven years with the catarrh in my head, and the last two years I have suffered almost constantly with a dull, heavy headache, and the last three or four weeks at times my hearing was affected. Now Jesus says in Jno. 15:7 — If ye abide in me and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will and it shall be done unto you. Again we read in Mark 16:17, 18 — And these signs shall follow them that believe: in my name shall cast out devils, they shall speak with new tongues, they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. On Mar. 15, 1893 at the meeting I complied with Jas. 5:14, 15. Glory to Jesus! the work was done. I vas completely healed and I cannot praise him enough for his love to me. “Oh the sweetness and completeness of perfected holiness!” How grand it is to serve God with our whole heart! Oh the joy and sweet peace it brings! Truly I feel sorry when I look over the past and see how crooked I was and how miserable, and when trials came I did not endure as a good soldier. But I have learned a lesson, though it cost dearly, that shall not soon be forgotten. I want all of the saints to pray for me, for I need the prayers of God’s people, that I may keep humble and sit at Jesus’ feet and learn from him, who has saved me from all sin and heals my body.

From your humble brother, sanctified wholly,

J. W. Newkirk.

MEDICINE, Continued.

_____

There are some agents which are not poison; Capsicum, Asclepias, L, Nepeta, Lobelia and many that would not poison a person and would be beneficial in many troubles if one has not faith in our Lord to take their case to him, but if any of the saints have not such faith I would advise them to look over their consecration; yet possibly one might take one of those harmless medicines and do them much good and not commit sin in doing so; because it is not injurious physically, yet it might possibly weaken their faith in God. I am confident many have taken treatment and died when if they had left it alone they might have been living yet to day, notwithstanding the M. D’s to the contrary. Let all the dear saints of God be wise in all those things, but first of all provide by obtaining faith in Jesus who is able. Let me sound aloud with trumpet thunder tones to the poople of God, avoid all poisons as far as it is your power to do so, for they are deadly enemies to your physical existence. Many a poor being has been physically depraved by them and had to suffer untold suffering, and incapacitated for usefulness either for God or themselves. As Prof. Chapman of the University of Pennsylvania said a number of years ago, “If you could only see what I see and witness what I almost daily witness, persons coming from the south with rheumatism, in the last stages of consumption, with neuralgia, dyspepsia, liver disease, and their jaws nearly eaten away by the use of the horrible and indiscriminate use of calomel, you would be made to cry as I often have, Oh what horrible, unwarnable, murderous quackery!”

Now if any of you get sick and you have not faith to grasp the divine promise of God, do not take poison if you can avoid it; it will sap the life from your vitals and bring you to a miserable existence here and a premature end. If you want to kill yourself you can do it with poison. Take a warm drink and then get in bed and take a good sweat will soon break a severe cold, but a good bath afterwards is a great advantage to cleanse the surface of the impurities perspired. For diphtheria a tea of golden rod leaves and top; wash the throat good and then drink pretty freely with a good stimulating liniment to outside of throat will be efficacious. There are other harmless ingredients can be given for different diseases, but to those who have the Lord as their physician none are needed.

I now humbly, commit these brief criticisms on this most important subject of temperance to the blessed will of God that he may sanctify them to his own glory, and the advancement of his holy cause here on this sin-cursed earth, to elevate the great creation of our Father and God to nearer the plane on which he made them in the beginning, when “he made them in his own likeness and after his own image,” to glorify the hand that formed them, and honor and exalt the great supreme mind which conceived his formation who is so “wonderfully and fearfully made.” Also I submit the several lessons and instructions to the careful perusal and prayerful consideration of all who may be so fortunate as to scan those hasty scribbled thoughts of memory after an absence of several years from the professional field, while engaged in the immediate evangelistic labors for my blessed Redeemer and Savior. I have written those few thoughts almost entirely from memory, without referring to books, except once before I left home I referred to Dr. Trail’s Encyclopedia of Hydropathy. I felt for some time before I commenced that God was inspiring me to this all important privilege of trying to inform my brethren, and communicate of that which God has granted to your unworthy servant through years of study, research and observation, that it might be, that those years of study might not be in vain, but treasured and brought forth to the glory of Him who ordained them to serve us, his creatures, for our physical and spiritual as well as temporal good, that we thereby may glorify him, the the author, by obeying those immutable laws, ordained to our happiness in this life, and which cannot be violated without suffering the fearful penalty of our disobedience. So in consideration of those wonderful facts, let me entreat every lover of human happiness, of good health, of moral purity and of heaven’s blissful life enjoyed in earthly tabernacles, to observe those suggestions; for I feel indeed that I was inspired by the Holy Spirit of God to write as I never did before on such subjects. Let all remember that “TEMPERANCE is the moderate use of the necessaries of life [not what we may desire or crave but, the necessaries] and the abstinence of all things that are injurious;” which God teaches us in his word, which is the doctrine of the gospel. “Let your moderation be known to all men.” “Be temperate in all things.” In submitting this, I feel the witness of God’s heavenly approval in my soul to the wonderful simple truths set forth, and that he has ordered it, and it will be blessed of Him in the great object of his love to poor fallen humanity. It has already accomplished much to the good of many to our knowledge, both in America and here in England. A dear Bro. McNuff of the Jubilee mission on St. James St., Liverpool, who feeds several little destitute, ragged children, to whom I gave of the papers containing the portion on coffee and tea, when he read it God showed him the evil and he said “My sheep hear my voice and follow me.” He announced at once they would have no more coffee, but he would give them their bread as common. He has requested me to give an address on temperance in his hall and to include coffee, tea and tobacco. So you can see the labor is not in vain in the Lord. Praise God! Praying God’s blessings on it and hoping it may go forth to many who are suffering by over indulgence in unnecessaries and extravagance, I bid you adieu, and if God shall inspire me I may add more in the future, but for the present I feel to close, for I do not feel inspired to write more. All glory to God who leadeth me! Let all pray for me. Amen.

SUFFERING FOR CHRIST.

_____

“DID not our heart burn within us while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?” — Luke 24:32. Well, we do know, dear ones, that Jesus talked in our soul this morning in the beautiful narrow way of holiness. We read in 1 Tim. 2:1, 2. — “Thou therefore my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men.” And the dear Lord has so plainly showed me he would have a tried people. We read in Dan. 12:10 — “Many shall be purified, made white and tried.” The fact that we are tried is a proof of our being white, and yet the devil will whisper that something is wrong and you may at once begin to examine yourself. But when you find that you have not broken your covenant with the Lord, do not judge by your feelings. Have you ever rode on an electric street car, which went so smoothly you could not feel that you were going? Likewise we cannot be governed by our feelings. We read in 1 Pet. 4:12 — “Think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you,” and here you are wondering what the trouble is. “Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind.” “But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.” 1 Pet. 4:1, 13. And James tells us to count it all joy when we fall into divers temptations. And so we have learned that when we are pressed beyond measure, when counted right, it is joy beyond measure; and when we feel exceedingly sorrowful, then when counted, it is exceeding joyful. “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises, that by these we might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” — 2 Pet. 1:4. “And unto you therefore which believe, he is precious.” So many want more faith in healing, and pray for the same, and call on God to increase their faith; and God begins to answer prayer by permitting some affliction to come upon them, and increases their faith by healing them. So it is in many other things. The apostle Peter tells us that if need be ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations. “If need be.” So we see that right with salvation we are tested, tempted and tried. Let me intreat you as the apostle Paul to count it a light affliction, for you have not resisted unto blood, striving against sin. And now dear ones, take God at his word; give your feelings up to Father and just know it is so because God said so. Some may say, stand on naked faith; but we should have our faith clothed with the word of God. We must not cast away our confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. How many when sick will call for the elders and have them obey the word believing before they send, that God will do the work, and yet because they do not feel that they are healed, they doubt it! Have your feelings consecrated, and rest on the word of God, knowing that God cannot lie. And forever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven.

Yours in the faith of the gospel,

Lena L. Shoffner.

PATIENCE is a glorious attribute of holiness, which every saint of God must be in possession of, for it is the very thing we must have in order to endure unto the end. First of all, the apostle begins the exhortation, to lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race set before us. Heb. 12:1. Again the apostle Peter exhorts to give all diligence, to add to faith, virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; and to knowledge, temperance; and to temperance, patience, etc. 2 Pet. 1:5. And in the 10th verse says, If ye do these things ye shall never fall. So we find it a very essential element. Again Paul says, Ye have need of patience after ye have done the will of God, that ye might receive the promises. Heb. 10:36. Another promise is, “Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I will also keep thee from the hour of temptation.” Rev. 3:10. I Again, “To them who by patient continuance in well doing, seek for glory, and honor, and immortality, eternal life.” Rom. 2:7.

So then since eternal life is a result of patient continuance in well doing, surely patience is glorious and essential. Then let us have it. How can we get it? First, let us add according to 2 Pet. 1:5, next lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset, and let us run with patience the race set before us. Now Paul says, “Run.” Brethren, one thing that is detrimental to us in this race, is disobedience. For, says the apostle, Ye did run well, who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? Gal. 5:7. So we find what hindered the Galatians, as it is in every case. Now what does the word say to us? My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations, knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. Jas. 1:3. Thank God for the knowledge that is first added; then we can count it joy; praise the Lord! Paul says we can glory in tribulation, knowing that tribulation worketh patience, and patience experience. Who could not glory in tribulation and count it joy when in divers temptations, when we know it gives us patience, experience, hope, and hope maketh not ashamed, because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost, which he hath given unto us? Rom. 5:7. But remember, dearly beloved, he only gives the Holy Ghost to them that obey him. Acts 5:32. Therefore, in order to enjoy the fullness of God in our souls constantly, we must obey all the above exhortations. But if any man lack wisdom, that is, to know how to make use of the knowledge already added, let him ask of God, who giveth liberally and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him. Jas. 1:5. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. Jas. 1:4.

Truly Paul did not exhaust the idea of patience working experience. What a glorious one! Perfect, entire, wanting nothing, says James. But we need divine assistance, strengthened with all might according to his glorious power unto all patience, and longsuffering, with joyfulness. Col. 1:11. But God is faithful who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. 1 Cor. 10:13. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation, for when he is tried he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Jas. 1:12. But we must prove our love by keeping his commands, for this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments, and his commandments are not grievous. 1 Jno. 5:3. By so doing God will prove his faithfulness to keep us. Take, my brethren, the prophets who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. Jas. 5:10. Be ye also patient, stablish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord. Jas. 5:8. Here is the patience and faith of the saints. Rev. 13:10. Patient toward all men. 1 Thess. 5:14. Patient in tribulation, continuing instant in prayer. Rom. 12:12. Rest in the Lord and wait patiently. Psa. 37:7. So after, he had patiently endured he obtained the promise. Heb. 6:15. In your patience possess ye your souls. Luke 21:19.

Nishnabotna, Mo.

Dear Readers: I feel led to write a short testimony. I am saved and sanctified, to do the whole will of God. I am praising the dear Lord for his saving and keeping power. I find it blessed to be a follower of the Lamb, and I desire the prayers of all God’s little ones that I may still grow in grace and sink deeper in his blessed will.

Yours in perfect love,

Juliett A. Murphy.

Nishnabotna, Mo.

Dear Saints: May God bless and keep you is my prayer. I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony. I cannot get to see enough of people to tell them that I am saved. I thought I would send it through the Trumpet. I am dead to this world and alive unto God. Glory to God in the highest! I praise him for his keeping power. I am so glad the Lord is more than a match for the devil. Thank God that when I was a sinner the dear Lord had mercy on me. I tried the ways of sin but did not find any peace. But my soul is free. I am afflicted, but all things work together for good to them that love the Lord.

Your brother,

John M. Harrington.
