MY EXPERIENCE.

Christ is now my strength, my all,
My tower in which I do retreat,
My confidence — I shall not fall,
For he in me doth reign complete.

Not ever was my life thus bright;
Once Satan strong with fiendish chain,
Had bound my soul in sinful night,
And by his power he had me slain.

Tongue cannot tell the grief alone,
That filled my soul both night and day;
When God’s bright light of heaven shone
Upon this wretched form of clay.

I saw that I a captive was,
Deprived of God’s rich grace and peace,
And lost to Heaven’s richest joys,
Lest from this power there came release.

Then lifted I my soul to him,
And asked for pardon that which I
Might rise above this life of sin,
And live where I might never die.

O praise our God I What priceless worth
The gift that then I did receive
He lifted far my heart from earth,
And from my bonds did grant reprieve.

’Twas then I saw to me was given
The gift of life eternal rare;
Yes, born of God, a child of heaven,
And raised to joy from deep despair.

Yet on my soul did God bestow
A greater grace; for in this hour
I triumph over all below,
Through his all sanctifying power.

Blest gift of God! O gracious love!
That he for sinful man should give
His Son; that we might reign above
This world, and with him ever live!

Though Satan, with his hosts around,
Is striving daily for my life,
I stand upon God’s holy grounds;
He makes me victor in the strife.

Yes, Christ is now my strength, my all,
My tower, in him I do retreat,
My confidence — I shall not fall,
For he in me doth reign complete.

THE CHURCH OF GOD.

But ye are come unto Mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn which are written in heaven. — Heb. 12:22, 23. “The word church, is taken from the Greek word Ekklesia, which signifies a religious assembly selected and called out of the world by the doctrine of the gospel, to worship the true God in Christ according to his word, also the whole family in heaven and earth. All the elect of God, of what nation soever, from the beginning to the end of the world, who make but one body whereof Jesus Christ is the head.”

BIBLE SUBJECTS.

We find in the word of God, many and various names or titles for the church of God, or the redeemed family of man, even in the text we find 4 or 5 different titles all meaning the same. Paul was very anxious that the Hebrew brethren should understand clearly and without a doubt, that they were already in the church of God, or church of the firstborn. The question is often asked by young converts, What church shall we join? This is a very importtant question. I know the general opinion of the people is that there is nothing in the name, but this is a wrong idea, there is much in the name; in the name of the Lord there is eternal salvation, and when you take upon you the name of Jesus you must depart forever from all iniquity. Also when you take upon you the name of any sect, you take sides for that, and separate yourself from all others. There is a will between you and all others that do not belong to the same sect that you do. Now if we are to join a church, let us examine by the word, the church or sect to which our mind is directed to join. The word says in 2 Cor. 6:14, Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers. So we must not join any church or sect that sinners can get into, and that does not measure up to God’s word. Before joining any man’s church, we had better take a look at the church spoken of here in the text. Let us first begin with the origin. Jesus says in Matt. 16:18, I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. So we see that it is of divine origin; that Jesus built it himself and does not let the job out to some one else, and he declares that it will stand forever, not even the counsels of hell shall be able to overcome it. He says he will build it, and in Acts 2: 47, Luke says the Lord added to the church daily. So we see that the church was already built: this was about the year 33. This is the oldest church on record. Now let us look at the building and the material of which it is composed. First examine the foundation. Some say that Christ built on Peter, using Matt. 16:18 for their text; but we find Jesus made use of a more sure foundation. Paul says we are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone. — Eph. 2:20. Some build on Peter, some on Luther, some on Wesley, Otterbein, Campbell, Roberts, and others, but Jesus intended his church to stand, so he laid a better foundation. All churches that are built on man, will sooner or later come to naught, but the church of God will stand through all eternity. Now some say we must belong to some sect for protection. They say if we simply belong to the church of God that we are like a stalk of corn, out in the commons where the beasts have all the chance in the world to destroy and devour us. What foolish reasoning! just as though joining some poor weak man made sect ready to fall down would protect us. The angel says in Rev. 18:2, that Babylon is fallen and is become the habitation of devils and the hold of every foul spirit, and cage of every unclean and hateful bird. You might just as well put a lamb in a den of wolves as to put one of God’s children in the sects of to-day for protection; one is just as consistent as the other. On the other hand we are not left out to the ravages of the devil, but we have a protection. Read Isa. 60:18. — Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders, but thou shalt call thy walls salvation and thy gates praise.

A wall is for a defence. And we read in Zech. 2:4, 5 that the Lord has promised to be a wall of fire round about us. So you see, we are in perfect safety, hedged in by a wall that nothing violent or destructive can penetrate. The devil himself with all his combined forces cannot get near us. The question might now be asked, What is the church? Paul says in Eph. 1:22, 23 that the church is the body of Christ. “Well,” you say, “of what does the body of Christ consist?” For answer to this question we will read Rom. 12:4, 5. Paul says, For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office, so we, being many, are one body in Christ. Paul was talking to saved men and women, and he meant to convey the idea that all saved children of God made up this body or church. Now as every church must have a head, let us see who is the head of the church of God. Let us read Eph. 5:23. — For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church. Now the head is that part of the body which rules all the rest of the body, and every member no matter what office he may hold, must be and is in perfect submission, and is ruled, governed and controlled by the head and can act and must act only as the head may direct. Jesus is the head of this church who is capable of ruling without the help of man, neither does he set any man as a ruler over us, but we are subject to Christ alone.

Now we come to the door, which is Christ himself. Jno. 10:9.

There are various modes of getting into the different man-made churches. Some of which arc by baptism or by six months’ probation, the right hand of fellowship, an oath, etc., etc. But Christ is the door into his church, and he declares, By me if any man enter, he shall be saved. Also he says in Rev. 3:7 that he openeth and no man shutteth; and shutteth and no man openeth. So you see he has given no man power or authority to open the door and take men in, much less to put them out; God sees to that himself. We get in by being saved: we get out by committing sin. This being the case, let us look at the spiritual condition of the church. Some say that there are good and bad in all churches. It may be so in manmade churches, but it is not so in the church of God; for Christ is the door and we cannot get into the church without being saved. Let us read Eph. 5:25-27: Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. Also Isa. 60:21: Thy people also shall be all righteous. It is impossible for hypocrites or sinners to get into the church. They may profess, but without salvation they must remain on the outside.

“Do you folks have a class book?” is often asked. “If not, how do you keep track of those that join the church?” Well, we have nothing to do with that either. We are commanded to preach the word, and God does the writing down of those that are saved. We find in the text that our names are written in heaven, so that neither man nor devils can drop or cast out our name. Read the effect of not having our names on this heavenly class book, the Lamb’s book of life. Rev. 20:15. But some say we must have an organization. Well, what is organization? Webster says, “Organize is to form in due order.” And Paul says in 1 Cor. 12:18 that God hath set the members every one of them in the body as it hath pleased him. We are organized with a heavenly organization, the Holy Spirit being the organizer, and our organization is of God. People often say, “We believe that the church of which you preach is the only one set forth in the word, but it is an invisible church, and it is necessary to belong to some man-made church, or sect, in order to be visible. Now let us quote from the M. E. catechism. No. 2, page 30, 1. In what two forms does the church of God exist? Ans. – The visible and invisible. 2. What is the visible church? Ans. — The visible church of Christ is a congregation of faithful men in which the pure word of God is preached and the sacraments (ordinances) are duly administered according to Christ’s ordinance. 3. What is the invisible church? Ans. — The whole body of God’s true people in every period of time. Thus, you see, Methodism admits that a congregation of believers is the visible church of God. Then why should they contend for a human organization? God’s church is visible, the whole plan is finished: all we have to do is to forsake all, and receive all. Paul says, Ye are complete in him. — Col. 26:10.

W. J. Henry.

The great day of God.

“THEN shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land; for great shall be the day of Jezreel.” — Hosea 1:11. As the family of God has been scattered and divided for many years with many heads ruling them besides Christ, “who is the head of the church, — Col. 1:18, the time is come that they are gathering together (not apart), and have appointed them one head. We are the offspring of God. — Acts 17:28, 29. The Father is the head of the family; so we, the offspring of God are his children. He is our Father and head, after whom we are named, for we bear our Father’s name. — Eph. 3:14, 15. “And they shall come up out of the land.” What land? “Behold I will gather them out of all countries whither 1 have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely; and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: and I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them.” — Jer. 32:37-39. “One heart and one way.” O praise God for the one way! What is the way? Answer — Is. 35:8-10. — “For great shall be the day of Jezreel.” Jezreel was a city in a small plain of the same name in Palestine, extending from the Mediterrean sea to the river Jordan and is twenty-five miles ide from east to west, and twelve miles from north to south. It is a classical battle field. There Barak and Gibeon triumphed; Deborah sang her war song; Saul and Jonathan fell near by on the mountains of Gilboa; here king Josiah was mortally wounded by the Egyptians. It is one of the most fertile plains or valleys of Palestine, and in spring time it looks like a green velvet carpet. It also furnishes John the revelator with the name for the final battle-field of God. “And he gathered them [saints of God] together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon,” — Rev. 16:16, which being intrepreted signifies the mount of the gospel. “I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations and parted my land.” — Joel 3:2. As every nation gets into the valley of Jehoshaphat which means “God judges,” and God pleads with them there, and the battle goes on between him that is clothed with a vesture dipped in blood, whose name is the Word of God, — Rev. 19:13, and the hosts of Gog and Magog, then “great shall be the day of Jezreel” or mount of the gospel. As every one is measured by the word of God, the beast (sectism) and all his followers are cast into the lake of fire. As the violent take the kingdom of heaven by force, and come out through many tribulations, take their stand on the sea of glass mingled with fire, and shout victory over the beast, it is not strange that it is called the battle of the great day of God Almighty. — Rev. 16:14. “Jerusalem which is above is free which is the mother of us all.” — Gal. 4:26: When we were in sectism we had mothers, so called, such as Baptist mothers, Methodist mothers, etc., but they were worse than stepmothers, for “we are orphans and fatherless, our mothers are as widows.” — Lam. 5:3. That is, they have no husband, for Christ is the husband of the true church only, and not of sects. But they leave the only true husband and follow after lovers. And now the time is come in this great day of God, that the children of God are returning to their first husband. — Hosea 2:7, 8. Praise the Lord! “Moreover the light of the moon [church] shall be as the light of the sun [Jesus Christ], and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold or [shall shine unto perfection] as the light of seven days, in the day that the Lord bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.” — Isa. 30:26.

He that overcometh shall inherit all things: and I will be his God and he shall be my son. Amen. Hallelujah! For just and righteous are his judgments. God bless all the saints of light and keep you ever watchful, ready for Christ’s appearing.

Yours in Christ,

W. A. Haynes.

THE WORD IS OUR GUIDE.

WE then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak and not to please ourselves. — Rom. 15:1. Bear ye one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ. — Gal. 6:2. Him that is weak in faith receive ye but not to doubtful disputations. — Rom. 14:1. Wherefore receive ye one another as Christ also received us to the glory of God. — Rom. 15. 7. Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be like minded one toward another according to Christ Jesus that ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God even the father of our Lord Jesus Christ. — Rom. 15:5, 6. Dear children of God, may we each one realize that vain will be our attempt to reach glory unless we obey the voice of Jesus and are led definitely by his Holy Spirit. O let us be sure that God gets the glory out of all we say or do! In my own experience the enemy got me overbalanced by getting me to speak at the impulse of the moment of any little mistake the saints would make without stopping to ask God’s advice; also to even think there was something wrong if there was not an immediate victory gained over any trial or affliction which they might be passing through, and to speak to others of it instead of going to God and wrestle as Jacob of old, until the victory was gained, or a definite command from God to admonish.

Dearly beloved, these things ought not to be. The Lord had to lay his hand upon me in order to show me what I was doing and what I lacked. O may others heed the warning voice that continually speaks in words of love. Many a time a dear one has had their spiritual life almost crushed out for the lack of charity, wisdom and proper admonishment. Wherefore be ye not unwise but understanding what the will of the Lord is. When we see that the enemy has almost devoured a brother or sister let us take God’s plan to restore such a one. Gal. 6:1. O that patience may have her perfect work in each soul that they may be entire, wanting nothing. And dear ones, before you admonish, see that you are standing approved of God in all things yourselves, otherwise your efforts to reprove will be vain. This I say then, Walk in the Spirit and and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. — Gal. 5:16. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. — Gal. 5:15. O may we know beyond a doubt that in all things God is pleased. The word says, Observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Yours, saved to the uttermost by the precious blood of Jesus, knowing I am at peace with God and my delight is in his law. My whole desire is to know and do his will. Glory to Jesus the rock of my salvation!

EDITORIAL NOTES.

Question.

Bro. W., Please explain Matt. 15:14.

Yours in Him,

C. B. Butler.

Ans. — The word reads as follows: Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind both shall fall into the ditch.”

It does not mean that they will fall into sin, for persons spiritually blind are in their sins. It does not mean that they will fall into error, because such are already in error. If we give it as rendered by the new translation, the Emphatic Diaglott and H. T. Anderson, we do not see as it needs any explanation. They all give us this translation: “If the blind lead the blind both will fall into the pit,” which doubtless means hell itself.”

THE FLOATING BETHEL.

Who is going to take hold of this matter? May God stir hearts at once. Bro. Clayton, writes as follows:

THE FLOATING BETHEL.

Many questions come to me about this boat. ‘‘What carries the boat along?” The unceasing current of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers carries the boat at a rate of from four to eight miles per hour, and it is steered by a large oar at each end of the boat. If we secure the boat we expect when widened three feet on each side it will seat nearly five hundred people besides containing bedrooms and kitchen. There will be but little expense except our living. We believe that the Lord wills to have enough workers to work back in the states that border on those rivers. We also expect to take a tabernacle with seats and all things complete to be used when it is needed. This is also the most successful way of reaching the neglected colored people of the South. The boat should be bought soon or it will be sold.

“What will be done with the boat when you get to New Orleans?” If we reach there before Christ comes, we can sell the boat and put the money to preaching the gospel in some other way, or put steam on it and go where the Lord leads. “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world, for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.” — Matt. 24:14. “Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel till the Son of man be come.” — Matt. 10:23. “Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that you may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.” — 2 Pet. 3:14.

My address is Welland, Ont.

G. T. Clayton.

Another brother writes Bro. C. as follows: I have read your convictions concerning a salvation boat. I want to say that I too feel that the Lord wants this thing. My heart leaps at the prospect of the undertaking. Well, we will have this ark if God wills, and I am ready to contribute my mite toward the consummation. The boat plan seems to have so many advantages. It will cost nothing to transport meeting house, workers and equipments one way, and we are independent of the church buildings. I will do what I can.

Yours truly,

H. M. Hawkins.

DO YOU CARRY TRACTS?

A good way to preach a sermon to anyone is, give them a good tract to read, and get them to promise to read it. Let them study it, and compare it with the word. If you have no gift of speech, can you not glorify God by giving a day’s or a week’s wages for tracts to be sent forth in this way? and by so doing many souls can be turned from the darkness of sin.

THE LORD IS OUR PHYSICIAN.

Some one writes that in the GOSPEL TRUMPET, Vol. xi, No. 23, an assertion was made, which he has failed to find in King James’ translation of the Bible. He says the assertion reads something like this: “We read in the Bible that Asa trusted in the physicians and not in the Lord and he died.” By turning to 2 Chronicles 16:12, 13, of the above named translation, you will find the following:

Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the Lord, but to the physicians. And Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the one and fortieth year of his reign.” — 2 Chron. 16:12, 13.

Asa was king of Judah, and was also a man of God, but at one time when greatly oppressed by his enemies, he relied upon the king of Syria for help, instead of relying upon the Lord, and by so doing did not receive the favor of the Lord. By not doing the will of God, either his faith had become weakened, or he was ashamed to call upon God when disease came upon him, so he called upon the physicians, and trusted himself in their hands. This ought to be a warning to the children of God to-day. We have the same God, and his hand is not shortened that he cannot heal. He is the “same yesterday, to-day and forever.” He healeth the diseases of those who put their whole trust in him. It is through the precious name of Jesus that the great work is done. How often the cause of Christ is put to shame on account of the weakness of the faith of those who claim to belong to the family of God, and in time of sickness rely upon the physicians instead of upon the Lord, even spending hundreds of dollars which ought to be used to the glory of God in the spreading of his gospel. Some even go so far as to publicly declare that they will never call upon a physician under any circumstance, and the first severe sickness that comes upon them a doctor is sent for with all haste, who is often one of the worst opposers of the truth. Even if the means used have had the blessings of the Lord implored upon them, the doctor is the one whom the people praise and give the glory, should the party get well, What is the trouble in such cases? What is the excuse for so doing? Was the case too hard for the Lord? It were better to never have so renounced the physicians, or else practice what you preach.

People say: “God blesses means, and we should do all we can and ask his blessings upon the same.” To be sure there are things which can at times be given to relieve the sick. But there is no remedy so effective as the one given in the Bible for the children of God to use; none so easily applied. But instead of using this God-given remedy, which can be had without money and without price, people will dope themselves with poisonous drugs, pay doctor bills, and thus rob God of means that should be used to his glory. Here, you Christian professors, just stop a moment and estimate the amount you have paid out for medicine and doctor bills for the last five or ten years; then see how much you have paid out for the the cause of Christ, and see if God has been receiving his just dues at your hand. Take into consideration the fact that he offers his treatment free. And his prescriptions are for each member of his family; not one excluded. The only thing required is to obey his word. Now let us see if some of us have not been very slack regarding some of our privileges. There is a faithful promise in his word that will meet the case of every one, no difference where they are, or what their trouble or afflictions may be, God blesses means; but the. means he intends for his children to use are those set forth in his word. What kind is that? It is PRAYER and FAITH. James says, “Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith shall save the sick; and the Lord shall raise him up. — James 5:14, 15. Here we see that the work is done through the prayer of faith, and the Lord does the raising up.

But suppose there are no elders in the community? Then we have this promise: That if two of you shall-agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there; am I in the midst of them. — Matt. 18:19, 20. Sometimes it happens that a person become seriously ill, or in great distress, and not even one child of God can be brought to the rescue. Is there a promise in such a case? O yes; a very precious one. Jesus says, If ye abide in me and my words abide in you, ask what ye will and it shall be done unto you. — Jno. 15:7. Just emphasize the first part of that promise, and examine yourselves and see if you are abiding in him; for it is only the abiding ones to whom this promise is given. If you are a sinner you have the privilege of repenting of your sins, and then the promise will be yours.

“And this is the confidence we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his he heareth us: and if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.” — 1 Jno. 5:14, 15. James says: “Is any among you afflicted? let him pray.” The injunction of the scripture is not to flee for a doctor in time of sickness, but rather flee to the Lord, who is the great physician. Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases.” Psalms 103:3. Be assured that if in any case of sickness the doctor can do you any good, the Lord can dp much more for you, without the aid of the doctor or His medicine. If you have no faith in God, and want to take medicine, take it. But you will find what little medicine you do take will weaken the small portion of faith which you have, because you look to the medicine for results, and not unto the Lord.

One excuse is, “I have no faith.” Get it then, for faith is a gift of God, and Paul tells us to “covet earnestly the best gifts.” This great blessing is given for the asking. Why not possess it? It would seem very foolish for afflicted persons to declare that it was not the will of God to heal them, and yet keep on doctoring and pouring down medicine with a hope of being cured in that way. Yet there are many who are doing that very thing. Why not settle down and be content with your lot, if you believe it is his will for you to suffer, and use your drug money for the good of others? You will find it always more safe to trust your case in the hands of the Lord, than to trust in physicians. May God help his children to consider these things from a Bible standpoint.

A Watchman.

To All the Saints: May God bless you all for Jesus’ sake. I believe it would be to the glory of God for me to testify of his saving and keeping power. Glory to his name! The work is prospering in these parts. Bro. Stanberry from Carthage, Mo. has spent two or three months in this part of the country preaching God’s holy word. There have been a few sinners saved, and a few more have come out of confusion, and have the light on God’s true church: others want to be put in the glorious way. Some of the saints seem to be living up to all the light they have, while others do not seem to walk as orderly as they ought.

Dear saints, I want you all to pray for me that God may give me that heavenly wisdom heeded to fill the place of a pastor to God’s church, as I feel that is the place the Lord has put me into. How unworthy do I feel to fill such a place! for there is a great deal for a true pastor to contend with. O the wisdom one needs to watch over God’s little ones! The Lambs must be fed; the weak and lame must be looked after. Then the crookedness that is abroad in our land and the counterfeit must be detected and showed up.

I find in these last days the devil is making his counterfeit as ever, and we must be well equipped with God’s word and his Spirit to discern them. It seems that God has placed me as watchman. O the wisdom of God I need to keep me humble and where God can use me in helping the weak and lame and to prepare food for the precious little lambs!

I find many things to be watched. The old devil is seeking whom he may devour. People seem ready at the first to lay aside all superfluity of dress, and strip themselves of gold, flowers and worldly conformity. But if any are not dead to the world after awhile pride seems to work in them. They may not put flowers or gold on, but it may be several yards of costly ribbon on their hats, and unnecessary trimming about their persons. That shows there is yet pride in the heart, and such must be admonished to apply to the precious blood of Christ. All we do ought to be done to the honor and glory of God. But this does not include a dollar’s worth of ribbon strung around a sister’s hat. I cannot see the glory to God in such

Page 3

things. O may God’s ministers be true to use the straight edge to cut off all vain superfluities! The devil is a very cunning demon. He will say to some, especially young people, “You are young and you must put on a little more fashionable dress,” and then if we are slack as watchman, how this thing will grow! Dear saints, I have already seen enough to convince me that we must be on the watch, or some one’s blood will be required at our hand. O the godly wisdom we all need to be faithful watchmen!

There is another fault besides pride we have to guard against: that is lightness. To see saints, old or young, gather together to work for souls and see lightness in them as if a frolic was on hand is an abomination. “Oh,” say some, “you can’t make old folks out of young.” No; but our blessed Jesus can make young people sober minded if they receive his grace. It is inconsistent for young people claiming to be followers of the meek and lowly Lamb of God, and when they come together to worship God, in place of being in the Spirit of Jesus, full of giggling and laughter, even while trying to sing the sweet songs of Zion, and while the precious word of God is being given. O may God bless us all and keep us walking as his blessed Son walked!

By request of some of the saints at West Plains, Mo., we Have concluded to keep a monthly appointment at that place, if the Lord wills, the third Sunday in each month.

Your brother, saved and sanctified wholly by the Holy Ghost,

W. M. Wilson.

HEWS FROM THE FIELD.

Gresham, Neb., Jan. 9, 1892.

We closed meeting in Denver, Col. Dec. 28. We were there about ten days. The Lord gave us a glorious victory. He did wonderfully bring his people together, and gave us a refreshing time. The saints now have a little church building in which to meet and worship God. The Lord led some precious souls out of sectism. On our way home preached one evening at Kenesaw. The Lord blessed the meeting. Preached at Utica, Neb., last Sabbath. There is a great need of Holy Ghost workers in the field. I am at home, trying to arrange my temporal affairs, so I can give my time continually to the Lord.

Your brother, sanctified wholly,

Dear Saints: Love and peace be multiplied to you all abundantly. Since my last report we have been having very precious times in the Lord. The meeting at Fenwick continued over two Lord’s days, and the Lord blessed the people with much conviction; but no one was willing to yield and be saved. We next went to a school-house near Wellandport and continued eleven days. There we found people more willing to obey the gospel. Ten or twelve consecrated; no doubt, many more would have followed, but they closed the school- house. Last night we had meeting in the Townline Bethel. Several consecrated there. We commence meeting at Candasville to-night. The Lord is keeping us humble, filled with the holy fire, and complete in Jesus.

Your brother,

Dear Trumpet Readers: Grace and peace be with you all the time. Amen. We began meeting three and a half miles northwest of this place Jan. 3. It was a place where the rea truth had never been heard. So we preached the word in all its purity and ..ness, and by the help of the Lord ..howed them the goodness of God … the beauties of salvation, notwithstanding we met with much opposi..n when we first came. They had ..rd so many false things circulated. ..e congregations increased and on ..nday night there was a large number out. We realized real victory all the time. Conviction rested on the people. Some confessed to us that they had felt the need of being saved, while others were convicted for a clean heart. We realize that it was a seed-sowing time, and we expect to return soon. There are a few there that have not bowed the knee to Baal. We are praising the Lord for complete victory all the time.

Dear Saints of the Most High God: The Lord bless and keep you forever and ever. Amen. We are glad to report that we are well and saved to the uttermost; bless the name of the Lord! Oct. 24, we started in the work with Bro’s Michels and Daugherty, and came to Decatur, Mich., where we stayed from Saturday evening till Wednesday morning. This was a very precious time to our soul. The meeting resulted in one brother getting sanctified, and another brother and sister getting out of sectism. From there we came to Three Rivers, where we met dear Brother Burden who has been out for God a number of years and whom the Lord uses in preaching. Here we commenced meeting. This meeting resulted in about eighteen or twenty coming out for God. Here Sister Michels came to us. Sister McCormick was also with us. From there we went to Tekonsha, and thence to Batavia, in Father Keagle’s neighborhood. This was a new place and quite a number acknowledged the truth. On the last day of this meeting we parted with Brother and Sister Michels and Sister McCormick who went home. Bro. Henry Keagle took Brother Daugherty and myself to Litchfield where we held a ten days’ meeting which resulted in the salvation of two souls. This is also a new place and the people are very drunk on the wine of sectism; still we believe much good was done and the way opened up for the future. Any one of the Lord’s ministers passing through that place are requested by the saints to stop. Call on or address Mahlon Stout. From there we went to Kunkle, Ohio, visiting the saints at Pioneer on our way. Truly the Lord has some gloriously saved children in that place. God bless their dear souls for their kindness shown toward us. During our stay at Kunkle, two or three got saved. We next preached three times in Blakesley, a new place where the light had never been preached before. There is a great field in Williams Co., Ohio; would be glad to get back there the Lord willing. From there we came back to Batavia, Mich, where we found Bro. and Sister Michels in a meeting. We stayed there over Lord’s day then all came to Three Rivers. Brother and Sister Michels returned home and Brother Daugherty and myself commenced a meeting on Tuesday night, Jan. 12, but soon closed on account of sickness. We are now holding a meeting six miles south of Three Rivers. Pray for us.

Your saved brethren,

W. J. Henry & J. W. Daugherty.

Dear Saints of the Most High, Greeting: May grace, mercy and peace, from God, the Father, be continually added unto you all. I rejoice in reporting to all the dear readers of the Trumpet that I am still saved to the uttermost and by the grace of God am enabled to walk alone with him. All honor and praise be to our God! Oh, it is so blessed and sweet to continually trust God and abide in his will and order! On the 11th of Dec. Bro’s Andrew Byers, Sen., Otto Rastede and myself started from Garden Plain, Ill. for San Diego, Cal., and on account of being snowbound for fifty hours at Trinidad, Col., we did not reach San Diego until Dec. 19. Oh what a glorious meeting we had on meeting dear Bro. J. W. Byers and family, and afterwards, the dear saints, some of whom, less than a year ago, have accepted the word and are now standing on the promises, ready to do the whole will of God. Oh how our hearts burned within us and were made to flow together on the evening of Jan. 16, when about thirty souls observed the ordinances of God’s house! Some took part who had never witnessed the like before. Truly it was a feast to our souls. Of course some took part who do not clearly discern the true body of Christ, and it seems the time has come, or is near at hand, when the true body will take its true position, and our earnest prayer is for the clearing away of everything that is not in harmony with God’s word. Truly our hearts were made to rejoice to see how God has been using Bro J. W. and Sister J. Byers in the work of His vineyard. Many are anxious to hear the precious word. But we are sorry to say that though many wholly consecrated workers are needed along the coast, the way of support is very limited. For some who accept the gospel in its fullness are very poor, and we would say right here, God help some of the saints who have plenty and some to spare, to see where their help is needed. It is true that Bro. Byers has used considerable of his own means in spreading the gospel, and has lived sparingly. Of course this cannot always so continue. Who is willing to send help to the coast? We could go into detail and explain the whole matter, but space would not permit, and think it sufficient for all well meaning ones to understand. We believe that we have been much benefited by going to the coast, and the good we have been permitted to do eternity alone will reveal. We were made to feel sad when the time came to part with the dear saints and newly formed friends. We started for the East Jan. 19. We also had some good opportunities of sowing the precious seed on our journey.

Your saved brother,

H. W. Hechler.

Dearly Beloved Brethren: After the Columbia City meeting we went about eight miles south and commenced meetings which closed the 20th. One sanctified and two healed. The children’s meeting there was interesting. Held two meetings near Saturn, Ind. Many were convicted. We found our beloved Bro. and Sister Henry Smith filled with the Spirit of Jesus. From there we went and held meetings about six miles south of Columbia City, with a precious victory for the Lord. We returned to Columbia City the 6th and remained until the 10th. Two sanctified and several were healed. One was a wonderful case of divine healing. Praise the Lord! Bro. A. J. Kilpatrick is desired at Columbia City. We hope the Lord will send him there soon. The 12th we arrived at Auburn, tarried with the church till the 14th and held two meetings. The Lord truly blessed us in presenting the word to the people. From here we go to Woodburn, Ind. the 26th, and begin meetings, and will then hold a meeting on Feb. 7th in the opera hall, at Antwerp, O., after which we expect to hold a week’s meeting at Deshler, O.

To all the Saints, Greeting: I am praising the Lord for what he is doing for me. He saves me just now. Oh how my soul does exalt and magnify his holy name! It has not been a year since I was serving the devil and had a profession, being a Methodist; but praise the dear Lord! deliverance has come. I found out my profession would not save me and I came to the Lord as a little child, and he saved my soul, and now I am free from all sects and human creeds. Pray for me dear ones, that I may live low and humble at the feet of Jesus.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel that it is to the glory of God to give in my testimony of what he has done or me. I can praise him for the sweet peace he gives me day by day. He is my joy and my song and saves me to the uttermost. Although I have many trials to pass through, praise God, he gives me victory over every trial. Having made known unto me the mystery of his will, I cannot thank and praise him enough for the satisfying portion he has given to me. But it is nothing good that I have done. Dear Readers of the Trumpet: I want to testify this morning that I am saved through the precious blood of Jesus; Saved from all sin and being led by His Spirit, walking in the light as he is in the light. I am praising God for the abundance of grace he gives me to stand all the fiery trials that come upon us. When I look over the busy world running to and fro around me and paying no attention to the great God who gives them even the breath they breathe, oh how often I am led to exclaim, My God, have mercy on them for they think not what they are doing! And we admit that all of the sects are more or less wresting the scriptures and are unequally yoked together, but God’s true church is not so. We bear one another’s burdens; all believe and speak the same, and all believe, teach and practice the whole word of God because we are all baptized into the one body by the same spirit and therefore we all have fellowship one with another. Praise God for the oneness among his true children! Pray for us, ye saints of the living God, that we may be useful in his cause in the salvation of precious souls.

Yours in the body of Christ,

OBITUARIES.

Died at Schofield, Mo., Nov. 22, 1891, Ettie Ethel Reed, aged eight months and eleven days. She was an adopted child of Brother and Sister Katchel. The following lines from Poems of Grace and Truth, were selected in memory of little Ethel:

Dear little Ethel,
Thou tiny bud,
‘Tis well with thee,
At home with God.

An infant sweet,
Has left us lone,
A cherub bright,
Shines at the throne.

O were the vail,
Withdrawn that we,
Our little Ethel,
On high could see.

The beauty of,
The robe she wears,
Would be enough
To dry our tears.

So while we miss,
The darling ray,
That shone with us
So brief a day,

We bow to him,
Who gave the boon,
And took again,
Alas! so soon.

Sister Mary Ann Creager departed this life at Barkeyville, Pa., Jan. 15, 1892, after a brief illness of about two weeks. This sister was born Jan. 23, 1810, and was adopted into the family of God Jan. 1, 1820. Was driven away from her home three times for Christ’s sake. She received information on entire sanctification through a cousin in Ohio, and was led into the experience through reading of God’s word. Was sanctified in 1887. She came to the Red Lion camp meeting and was partially healed of deafness of twenty-six years standing. Her testimony on her death bed was that she was trusting in the all cleansing blood of Jesus. She fell asleep in Jesus with a bright smile on her countenance. Her funeral was preached by the writer in the Barkeyville meeting-house from the text in Psalm 116:15. — “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” Her body was laid in the Barkeyville graveyard to await the resurrection of the just.

It is the Truth that makes us free.

Dear Saints of the Living God : I am led to write a little to the brethren. I find many weak and unstable. Get out into the clear light and be free for Jesus’ sake. In John 17:17, Jesus says, Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. Then in chapter 8:32, 33, Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Not part truth and part error, but the pure unadulterated truth. When I saw myself as I was, a poor deceived undone man, I confessed my sins and repented of the same, and acknowledged the truth and accepted the truth. I threw all my preconceived ideas overboard, purged out the old leaven and became a new lump. Glory to God for the work that has been done for me! Oh grace! what a wonderful gift! a free gift. How I praise God for this wonderful deliverance from the powers of darkness! And I am standing out in the pure light of heaven, walking in the light as he is in the light, having fellowship with all his dear children, and the blood of Jesus cleanses me from all sin. Jesus said to those Jews, If ye continue in my word ye are my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Those Jews could not continue in their former belief and be the disciples of Jesus. No; he said continue in my word and ye shall know the truth. They had to renounce their former views and accept the word of Jesus. They could not continue in their unbelief in Jesus as the Messiah; they had to renounce their unbelief and accept Jesus as the Messiah. I find some dear souls holding to erroneous doctrines almost as absurd as this; and many yet mixed up with error by reading the ungodly stuff that is afloat in the world.

I have been led to take some of D. L. Moody’s writings to show the blindness of the professing world. I quote from passages from a little book of Moody’s, the title of which is “HEAVEN, WHERE IT IS, ITS INHABITANTS, AND HOW TO GET THERE.” In speaking of heaven he says, “Well, we are all going to emigrate in a very little while to a country that is very far away.”

He does not seem to realize that when we have the love of God in our souls we are living in the very atmosphere of heaven, that the very elements of heaven are within us. Any one would think, to hear some talk, that heaven was more distant than the most distant planet; but where God dwells surely heaven is not far away, and when he dwells in the soul the glory of heaven is there, and round about, and the kingdom of God is within us.

Page 35, he says, “It seems highly probable, indeed I think it is clearly taught by scripture that a great many careless Christians will get into heaven. There will be a great many who will get in by the skin of their teeth.” Page 84, he says, “A friend of mine says he was in Liverpool a few years ago, and he saw a vessel that had to be towed into the harbor with great care; it was clear down to the water’s edge and he wondered why it did not sink. Pretty soon there came another vessel without any help at all; it did not need any tug to tow it in, but it steamed right up the Mersey past the other vessel. And he made inquiry and he found that the vessel that had to be towed in was what they call water-logged; that is, it was loaded with lumber and material of that kind, and having sprung a leak it had partially sunk, and it was very hard work to get it into the harbor.”

Mr. Moody says, “I believe there are a great many professed Christians, a great many perhaps who really are Christians, who have become ‘water-logged.’ They have too many earthly treasures, and it takes nearly the whole church — the whole spiritual power of the church to look offer these worldly Christians to kee.. them from going entirely back into the world. If the whole church were as John Wesley said, hard at it, and always at it, what a power there would be, and how soon we would reach the world and the masses! But we are not reaching the world because the church itself has become conformed to the worldly minded, and so many are wondering why they do not grow in grace while they have more of the earth in their thoughts than God.” On page 29 he says, “It has been said that there are three things that will surprise us when we get to heaven; one is, to find many whom we did not expect to find there; another, to find some not there whom we had expected; and third, and perhaps the greatest wonder to find ourselves there. Among the good whom we hope to meet in heaven we are told there will be every variety of character, taste and disposition. There is not one mansion there, but many. There is not one gate to heaven, but many. There are not only three gates on the north, but on the east three gates, on the west three gates, and on the south three gates.”

Now hear the blind man talk. He says, “From opposite divisions of the theological compass, from opposing standpoints of the religious world, from different quarters of human life and characters, through various expressions of their common faith and hope, through divers modes of conversion, through different portions of the holy Scripture, will the weary travelers enter the heavenly city and meet each other — not without surprise — on the shore of the same river.” Those who have been at variance here and did not enjoy each other’s company, I should think would be surprised to meet in heaven. But you see Mr. Moody has it all fixed up in fine shape. Many mansions and many gates to accommodate the variety of characters, the opposing standpoints, differences of life and for diverse modes of conversion, he is going to have them all get in. If one comes up to one gate and does not find admittance he can go to another: they will all get in somewhere, and all find a mansion there. Yes, and there is a tree growing there, the fruit of which is for all these different turns of mind. Hear the blindness! He says, “And on those shores they will find a tree bearing, not the same kind of fruit always, and at all times, but twelve names of fruits for every different turn of mind, for the patient sufferer, for the active servant, for the holy and humble philosopher, for the spirits of just men now, at last, made perfect, and the leaves of the trees shall be for the healing, not of one single church only, not for the Scotchman or the Englishman only, but for the healing of the nation, the Frenchman, the German, the Italian, the Russian, for all those from whom it may be in this world its fruit has been farthest removed, but who have nevertheless hungered and thirsted after righteousness, and who therefore shall be filled.” Then again on page 96 he takes the same scripture that we take to show the Christian’s rest here, to show that that there is nothing here in this world but want, misery and sorrow; nothing until after death. He says, “We are to rest by and by. There is no rest here. There remaineth a rest therefore to the people of God, jut it does not tell that there is rest here. The Lord will call us home to enjoy that rest.”

According to his teaching he puts everything after death. There are many more errors in the book but this is enough to bring out what I desired. There are many good sayings in the book, but would it be good reading for those who have not much discernment? No, indeed; such reading is what gets so many people confused and led astray, who soon get into a condition where they will not heed sound doctrine, and can never get clear in their souls until they lay aside such teaching.

C. B. Butler.

Prayer.

AS we go through life’s journey and learn many of God’s ways, we see many dear souls seeking more light and at the same time are walking in all the light they have. I wish to call to your remembrance the great necessity of prayer. Paul says in Rom. 8:26, “For we know not what we should pray for as we ought.” And in 2 Tim. 2:2, “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”

After learning something of importance we ought to teach others also. Some pray for God to teach them how to pray and what to pray for, which is all right; but they should believe. Mark 11:24. — Therefore I say unto, Whatsoever things ye desire when ye pray, believe that ye receive them and ye shall have them. Jesus says, Verily, verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name he will give it you. Rom. 8:26. — Likewise the Spirit helpeth our infirmities, for we know not what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27. — And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

The only way to please God is to forsake everything and do his will, praying much as the Spirit makes intercession.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

New Pittsburg, Ind.

In our last report we were at this place at work for God with eternal peace in our souls. Bless the dear Lord! We are so glad that he has so blessedly redeemed our souls from sin. This has been one of the most blessed meetings we ever realized at this place. Much good has been accomplished at this place through the gospel. Souls are set at liberty, and the church is settled deeper in the love of God. Of a truth the church at this place are of one heart and one soul. God bless them and keep them faithful till the day of Christ. The meeting continued two weeks. The nights of the 25th and 26th of Jan. we held at Pleasant Grove, five miles southwest of here, near the Deerfield camp ground. God did bless us and the dear saints, also the people. I hope to see many of that place made real happy in the near future, through the blood of Jesus. Jan. 27th, we returned to New Pittsburg, Ind., and held ordinance meeting in the house of Bro. and Sister H. C. and B. Wickersham. O bless God! he met with us, and we had a real good meeting in the name of Jesus. There were nineteen of the saints that took part. All were not present. May all the dear saints stand fast, and God bless them for their care for us. Some during the meeting applied for healing and were healed in the name of Jesus. We commence meeting at Willow Chapel, Sat., Jan. 30th. Anyone wanting meeting, near by, address us at Portland, Ind. We remain your brother and sisters, all sold out to Jesus and full of the Holy Spirit, sanctified wholly,

S. L. & A. L. Speck, & S. Kriebel.

The meeting we have just closed near West Liberty, O., began Jan. 1st. During its progress we had very attentive congregations, and very large ones at the close, also good order. Praise the Lord! Much of the presence and power of God was manifest during the meeting in “laying judgment to the line and righteousness to the plummet,” and in convicting the people of their sins and obligations to him. Many never heard the real truth of God before, and the majority dared not to deny it. Some who live in this vicinity are eager fighters for the way, and yet by some crafty means of Satan they are still bound in the servitude of sin. The more light they see, the many more severe stripes they inflict upon themselves by not walking in it. Deep conviction rested upon them during the meeting, but they would not yield. Truly Gentile grace is closing out. We know the word has done much good. One consecration was made during the meeting. Bro. Geo. Howard and other saints from Springfield, Sidney, and other places were present. We go Jan. 21 to a place four miles west of Springfield, to commence a meeting. Pray for us. Our address is Payne, Ohio.

Your brother and sister saved, kept, and wholly on the gospel altar,

B. E. & N. M. Warren.

TESTIMONIES.

Thy Testimonies are Wonderful.” —
Psa. 119:129.

Sandy Lake, Pa.

Dear Beloved Ones in the Lord: I feel it would be to the honor and glory of God for me to write my testimony for the Lord. I do praise him for saving my soul, for calling after me when I was going the downward road to ruin. Oh he is so precious to me! He gives me sweet joy and peace in trusting him. Praise his holy name forever and ever! How I do praise him for keeping me in the straight and narrow way that leads to joys above. I am trusting in Jesus for my healing. I feel that I am ready and willing to go at his call. I feel like praising him more and more every day for what he does for me. How I do rejoice to know that I am saved and on the road to that beautiful home prepared for me! If poor sinners only knew what peace and joy there is in Jesus! I advise them to speedily turn to God and find peace and joy to their souls. Well, I do thank him for the peace I have in my soul, and I intend by the grace of God to ever keep trusting in the Lord, and then I know I will gain a home above.

Your sister in Jesus,

Dear Saints: I feel led to tell what Jesus has done for me. He saves me from all sin just now and from all the fashions of the world. Glory to God for salvation that brings joy and peace to our souls! Without holiness no man can see the Lord. I am so glad that Jesus can save and none can hinder. There are so many that doubt that the Lord can save. He keeps me sweetly resting on his strong arm of protection. I can serve him day by day and never get tired. The very God of peace sanctifies me wholly just now.

Dear Saints: I feel that it would glorify God to write my testimony. I am praising God for salvation that keeps me from submitting to the works of the devil. O praise God for light on the word! By the help of the Lord I am enabled to make Satan’s works manifest. I praise God that I see the light.

Your brother, kept by the power of God,

Dear Saints: I am thankful that I can testify to the world through the Trumpet of this dear Jesus that God sent into the world to redeem poor fallen man. He found me about four years ago, lost and without God and hope in the world. He showed me my lost condition in a dream or vision.

From your brother in Christ, saved, sanctified and kept,

Henry H. Keagle.

Dear Brethren: I thought I would add my testimony with yours. I can say I live by faith in the Son of God. I was converted, in August, 1866, but was not satisfied, without wittness of the seal of God’s love written on my heart. I prayed and wrestled with God until about the first of January, 1867, when I received the longed for answer to my prayer, the witness of my acceptance, and my peace flowed as a river. Praise. God for full salvation! But I had none to help me on in that way. At present I am surrounded with opposition, most of which is from members of so called churches. Some are professing to be saved and yet they say they know they sin every day; and the minister says Amen to such testimonies. May God enable them to see their situation before it is too late. They have rejected ministers that upheld holiness to them, and they still object to any one that advocates holiness as a special work or blessing. They will not stand spiritual fire or gospel shot. They are spiritually dead, plucked up by the roots, and will not obey God; the minister told them so, yet he is in the same rut, at least he said he was, but he does not attempt to get out himself or help the members out. By the help of God I have stood this for twenty-five years and am glad that I can live every day with Christ Jesus as my companion. He has been my stay in affliction and bereavements of the past, and is around me at present. While I suffer in the flesh, I rejoice in the spirit. I have Rheumatism and Neuralgia; I have done but little work for over a year, and have a family of five to support. Temporally the way looks dark but spiritually it is bright. I am determined to take God at his word, believing that he will provide for me in his way, not mine. Glory to his name! Amen.

Yours in Christ,

S. T. Thatcher.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel led by the Spirit of the Lord to write my testimony. It is about one year since the Lord took away my companion, whose life was dearer to me than my own. Oh how very dark and cold the world looks to me! But thank God he has let his precious light shine through this great darkness, sorrow and gloom. It is now twenty-eight years since the Lord showed me the true and living way. I never have joined a sect, and never shall. Remember what the Lord has said to us concerning the coming of Christ, Be ye also ready; for the Son of man cometh when ye think not. He says he will come as a thief in the night. Dear saints, I want you to pray earnestly that I may live nearer to God, and also that he will be with me continually in my loneliness, and take away this fear of the world. My health has been very poor for the last fifteen years; but I hope to reach that blessed home where there is no sickness and death.

Your sister in Christ,

Lavinna Coblentz.

Dear Saints: I am led to write my testimony this morning. Praise the Lord forever! for salvation that keeps us free in our souls to do our Master’s will in all things. I left the U. B. sect which I belonged to about twelve years. The last three years I was with them I did all I could to build up the sect, but it was sorrow to me. When prayer meeting night would come about one-fifth of the members would come out. I thought there was something lacking; it was the true spirit of God, and the true light on the word of God that was lacking. It was confusion and division in the sect. About two years ago there were some of God’s ministers sent into our neighborhood to preach the straight word. Some of my friends accepted the word and got saved, but I could not accept it, like so many are to-day rejecting the straight way. But I d.. have to accept it or give up what I d.. have. I am still saved and all on th.. altar to do the will of God.
