A Spring Morning’s Hour.

_____

Awake early, ye lovers of nature,
Behold the works of thy Creator;
When all this heavenly grandeur I see,
Isn’t it wonderful that Jesus loves me?

Oh was there ever a morn more beautiful?
All nature seems to God most dutiful;
Oh was there ever soul more profound,
As I hear around me heavenly echoes resound?

The stormy winter with ice and snow
Has given place to a grander show;
All anxious care from my life has fled,
Great God, for this Thy blood was shed.

The little birds on the branches swing,
As they to the morning a carol sing;
My soul swings out on the morning rays,
And I shout my blessed Maker’s praise.

The flowers lift up their head,
And on the breeze sweet fragrance spread;
No more my soul shall droop and pine,
But speak to this world of a light divine.

Did the moon ever shine so peaceful before?
Did the waves ever lash so gently the shore?
Did man ever enjoy a more kingly seat,
Than this I have found at Jesus’ feet?

But far in the east a brightening ray
Tells to earth of a coming day;
In my soul the sweet Spirit’s call
Tells me that Jesus is Lord of all.

The darkness of night fades quickly away
Before this Monarch of the day;
The blackness of sin from my soul has fled,
And the light of heaven is there instead.

Oh was there ever a scene more grand?
Oh where, oh where is a happier land?
A voice from heaven speaks deep in ray soul,
Somewhere beyond the moon are glories untold.

Awake, idle dreamer, why sleep away
Come hear with me the glad morning lays,
And you idle dreamer, asleep in your sin,
Believe on my Jesus and help me praise Him.

My soul would love to linger longer,
But the rays of light are fast growing stronger,
And I must away to my daily task;
Praise God! I am blessed beyond what I asked.

__________

POWER IN PETITION.

_____

“AND he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray and not to faint.” — Luke 18:1. We often view the goodness and severity of God with wonder and admiration, thank him for his kindness to us, and praise his name for blessings so bountifully bestowed, and still fail to comprehend the rich provisions for spiritual development attained by a constant communion between the soul and its Maker. True confidence is gained by correspondence, and the more intimate we become with God’s will and our duty, the better we are qualified to perform it. Many fail to lightly appreciate this privilege of petition, or at least fail to profit by its offered means of grace, and thus their power with God is greatly limited, and they cannot be used as such mighty instruments in his hands, for the promotion of his cause. Christ says, “Without me ye can do nothing,” and in order to receive his help we are exhorted to “come boldly to a throne of grace.” So it is necessary for us to come often to God in prayer, receiving power to be continual overcomers, and retain a transparent experience.

There is a power in petition, that crowns the Christian’s effort with success, and it is a time noted fact, that the man of constant prayer is the man of effectual power. By petitioning the throne of grace, “men of like passion as we are” have received faith in God that enabled them to stand the severest trials without shrink or fear, and many have sealed their testimony by their life’s blood. Neglecting the duty and privilege of prayer, has thrown the professed Christian world into a dead, formal worship, and through it men have gotten their eyes on the weakness of humanity, instead of the power of divinity, and then concluded it is impossible to live without committing sin. The word says, “What fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness?” And the truth is, their “sins separate them from God,” and their prayers become cold and formal. They begin to use “vain repetitions,” and may be, pray the same old prayer year after year; and if God should suddenly answer it, it would scare them. And at the same time, in conversation, they will wonder why the apostolic religion is not practiced more to day. O, my God, keep us delivered from all formality and lip service, and aid us in offering acceptable spiritual sacrifices.

Childhood simplicity, offers many lessons of vital importance to you and I, as children of God. Its childlike confidence in its parents, exhorts us to simple trusting faith in God. When the sinner is brought under the influence of God’s convicting spirit, he goes through no ceremonial form of repentance, but cries out from the great deep of his sin burdened heart. “God save or I perish,” or “God be merciful to me a sinner,” and his prayer goes to the throne; while the boasting publican is left without God’s help to dote on his vanity. The thief on the cross petitioned acceptably, and gives us a good example. In his simple request we can view faith, hope, dependence, resignation and confidence. In Christ’s reply we see love, mercy, willingness, ability and authority. Then let us come to the Lord in childlike simplicity, asking for the things we need, when we need them, and God promises us sufficient grace, if we are obedient children. Christ was tempted in all points as we are. — Heb. 4:15. And now he is able to succor them that are tempted. — Heb. 2:18.

Thus you see, Christ’s life in the flesh proved the power of the divinity to keep the humanity, and testifies that the grace of God is sufficient to keep man free from the wiles of Satan, under every circumstance. — 1 Cor. 10:13. Salvation delivers us from the people and their opinions of us; and there is a power in petition, that keeps us delivered and walking before God in humility and meekness. God looks “not on the speech of those that are puffed up, but the power.” A pulpit that is closely connected with an altar of prayer, can never be barren; and if ministers would spend one hour before each time of preaching, in secret communion with God, all present could both feel and see its, wonderful effect. O dear brethren, there is truly a virtue in prayer, a power in petition, very necessary to effectual work, that can be obtained in no other way.

Then with reverence and perseverence, let us “come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find help in every time of need.” That we may have “power over all the power of the enemy;” that the jail house of sin may be bursted open; that strife and division may give place to Bible unity and purity; and that the works of sin and Satan will be driven before the gospel preached with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven.

MORE FROM THE COVENANT WRITER.

_____

Voris, Mo. Dec. 3, 1892.

E. E. Byrum, Grand Junction, Mich: In the Gospel Trumpet of Dec. 1, 1892, headed, Editorial Notes, you refer to the Missionary Covenant writer. I suppose this refers to me. And I will say, and repeat that there is no proof in Holy Bible to prove the doctrine of inbred sin, or sin of inheritance. Neither is there any proof of the two works of grace to complete a man’s salvation and make him a fit subject for the kingdom of heaven as you teach it. God’s grace has been my favor hundred of times, and if I am faithful to death, his grace will give me a crown of life that fades not away. Bless God for his present and final gifts of this grace.

In pleading for an earthly record, I know that as our names are written in heaven, in the Lamb’s book of life (in this I rejoice) that God does so require in earth, and if you do not understand this you had better go to him and secure a batch of his wisdom on this, and several other erroneous ideas that you are setting forth Before the world. I am not questioning your honesty in these things, but the legality. You have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. Now in conclusion let me say I am fully able to sustain my views on Christian union. And unless you can let me set them forth in your paper so your readers can sec and judge for themselves, you will do me a great favor not to cast any more reflections on my positions. I shall set them forth in the Good Way or some other impartial reliable newspaper.

Fraternally yours,

Wm. R. Adams.

ANSWER.

In replying to the above letter we do not do so for the sake of argument or contention, nor with the least feeling of ill-will toward the writer, but do so with a heart full of love toward him and others who are in the same blinded condition regarding the teachings of the word of God.

Let us notice a few of his assertions in comparison with the word of God. First, he claims that there is nothing in the Bible to prove the doctrine of inbred or inherited sin. Open the Bible and read Gen. 1:27, and 5:1. There we read that man was made in the “likeness of God,” in “his own image.” Then man was on the plane of holiness with God, free from all sin, where he could walk and talk with God. But we also read that by doing that which God commanded him not to do, he fell from that holy plane, and was driven from the garden of Eden. Adam realized his sin after he had disobeyed the command, and wanted to hide himself from the presence of the Lord. And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil. — Gen. 5:22.

The command was given Adam not to eat of a certain kind of fruit, and if he did eat of it, death would be the result. However, Adam disobeyed the Lord and ate of the forbidden fruit, and died. But what kind of death was it? It was a spiritual death, because he lived several hundred years after this, but because of his sin and spiritual death he was cast out of the presence of the Lord.

Now, let us find out something about the effects of this sin of Adam, and whether anyone else was in any way affected by it or not, then we can better understand regarding the “inbred sin.” INBRED SIN, means that which is bred within; natural; a sin by nature.

When Adam, by transgression fell he lost the divine nature, and now in this fallen condition he begat children “in his own likeness, after his OWN IMAGE,” instead of in the image of God as he was made. — Gen. 5:1- 3. Not only was this sin visited upon the children of Adam, but we read in Rom. 5:12-19, that, “as by one man sin entered into the world, and death, by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” “Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation.” “For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one [Jesus Christ] shall many be made righteous.” Is this not plain enough language to show that there is such a thing as inbred sin; a sin of inheritance? We could give many other scriptures, but surely this is sufficient even if there were no other to be given.

David knew something about this sin, when he said, Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. — Psa. 51:5.

This evil or sinful nature being an inheritance to us through the fall of Adam, we are brought into this world in possession of it, but it coming through inheritance, we are not responsible for it until we reach the point in our lives wherein we learn that it is our privilege to have it eradicated, or taken away. Paul describes this evil nature as the “old man;” the “carnal mind;” the “body of death,” etc., the fruits of which are carnality, anger, strife, envy, etc., which things you do not find in a person who is purged from the Adamic nature.

Have you ever seen a little babe when tried and worried that did not show forth the fruits of that inbred nature? The little one will become angry at times, and exhibit a very unpleasant temper and disposition, and yet it is perfectly innocent as far as transgression is concerned, and God does not hold it accountable for something of which it is not responsible, for it has not yet reached the age where it knows right from wrong. But as the little one grows older there comes a time when it learns to know what is right and what is wrong, then, it has reached the age of accountability. It is then, that the child can commit sin which this evil nature being bred within is sure to cause it to do. Then is when people become sinners in the sight of God. Before the little one has reached this point in life it is in a state of innocency, free from actual transgressions.

But now how about the two works of grace? Some say there is but one work of grace and the whole thing is received at one time; that God with his infinite power never makes two jobs out of anything, etc. He probably could have made the world in one day but did not do so; or could have brought the children of Israel directly from Egypt into Canaan, but that was not the divine plan. Neither did he heal the blind man with one application because he had a design in so doing by which he wished to teach a lesson.

‘The way of salvation is very plainly set forth in the word of God and is very easily understood by anyone who has a willingness tp obey the Lord and follow wherever he leads. Every one who seeks deliverance from sin must take this Bible way for it or the result will be a failure every time.

Through repentance and believing on the Lord Jesus Christ the pardoning words are spoken and all committed sins forgiven; a spiritual birth takes place, and the new-born babe in Christ, now a branch of the true vine, is made to rejoice because of the great change from a state of guilt to one of innocency. The vine is to bear fruit that it may be purged that it may bring forth more fruit. — Jno. 15:2. Here is shown the grafting into the vine, then the purging. The spiritual birth places a person into the vine, — the body of Christ, the church — and sanctification is the “purging” process wherein they can reckon themselves dead unto the world and crucified with Christ.

By reading Rom. 5:1, 21; 2:1, 2, it is very plain to be seen that there is an advanced state of grace to reach, and that the sinner cannot with one step reach it. As the forgiveness of sins places a person in a justified relation with God, we find that this opens the way into the standing grace of sanctification. Therefore being justified by faith we have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. — Rom. 5:1, 2. Then in Rom. 12:1, 2, Paul in speaking to those who were children of God, calling them brethren, urged them to offer their bodies a “living sacrifice.” The sinner cannot make this living sacrifice because he is yet dead in trespasses and sins, and a dead person cannot offer himself as a “living sacrifice,” but he must take the Bible way, and be made alive in Christ through repentance and believing, and after bearing fruits of justification, can make the acceptable offering of a living sacrifice, and be “crucified with Christ” to the things of this world. The sinner being dead in his sins cannot be crucified with Christ, because it is impossible to crucify a dead man. But when the proper point is reached, the crucifying, purging process sweeps away the inbred evil, or inherited nature, and leaves the divine nature implanted, with no opposing element within. While this divine power destroys the carnal nature, it does not destroy the human nature. We do not become infallible, but remain human beings — free moral agents. We being human, even this high stale of grace does not put us where it is impossible for us to sin, but it places us where we have no desire to sin, and where we can abound in the love of Jesus and live a pure and holy life each day. There is a place where the impossibility comes in, and that is, it is impossibile for a child of God to commit sin and still remain a child of God. For the word says that “he that committeth sin is of the devil.” Yea, they must give up the Lord before the deed is committed. Those who are conscious of this inbred foe within are often made to exclaim with Paul when he was describing his condition while in such a state: “When I would do good, evil is present with me.”

A person in a justified relation with God who walks in all the light received, will soon have a hungering and thirsting after the: “hidden manna;” for the satisfying portion to the soul.

When you see persons fighting the second work of grace, which is entire sanctification, note such ones and you will find that they have not even the first work, no difference what kind of an experience they may have had in the past, or what kind of a profession they are making now, and such ones cannot fully discern the body of Christ, and thus sectism received it formation and growth. Just like the writer of the letter given at the head of this letter, he read in his Bible that sectism is wrong and that God only has one church — the body of Christ — and not being in a condition where he could discern the body of Christ, he struck upon a new plan which we will here give, although we plainly answered him by the word of God, some time ago, in an article entitled “Discerning the Body,” so it is unnecessary to rehearse the same.

He read in the Bible that it was the will of God that all believers be united into the one body, and considering Christ’s plan of unity by the love and Spirit of God to be insufficient, and also thought the same regarding the record which is kept in heaven (Heb. 12:23; Luke 10:20) and not knowing what else to do, wrote out a covenant of his own composition, which he wanted all Christian people to sign, and thus be united into the one body. In a letter before us, dated Oct. 8, 1892, he requested us to print one hundred thousand of them in circular form, at once, and circulate them, and as he says “start the ball rolling.” We are not rolling that kind of balls, and do not bid any one God-speed in any such movements. Who cannot see the inconsistency? The worst hypocrites and false professers on earth would be the first ones to sign such a covenant if they thought by so doing they could be identified with the children of God. Now God’s plan is “whosoever will” may meet the conditions of his word, make a covenant with him, and have their names written in heaven, where none but the names of saved people are recorded, and they are kept in his name by continually doing his whole will.

Bro. Lundy writes of a good work of God’s salvation in Tenn. Many are receiving the truth, and being set free, He says, “Among those have come out of sectism is a preacher who testifies that he is free from all sin for the first time in his life. Now his creed has no confidence in him. When he sinned every day, in their estimation he was all right.” Surely the ways of Babylon are very preverse. “Yea they have chosen their own ways — sin — and their soul delighteth in their abominations.” Isa. 66:3. “A rebellious people, which walketh in a way that is not good, after their thoughts. Isa. 65:2. “For they know not the way of the Lord.” Jer. 5:4. Wherefore their way shall be unto them as slippery ways in the darkness; they shall be driven on and fall therein.” Jer. 23:12. But will not God bless every sect in their own way, because the preachers have so taught them? Ans. “And there shall be, like people, like priests: and f will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings.” — Hosea 4:9.

__________

The writer of Proverbs informs us that, “These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.” — Prov. 6:16-19.

Surely these are all hateful abominations, but Solomon did not say they were the only hateful things in his day, and in our day abominations have multiplied ad infinitum. One of which we would mention and denounce in the name of Jesus: Our heart has been disgusted by the receipt of verses taken from song books, etc., to which the sender has subscribed as follows: “Words by,” etc. affixing his name as author of that which another has written. This sin covers the two first abominations, it involves both pride and lying. Pride that seeks honor even by stealing it. It is practicing deception, dishonesty, hypocrisy and theft. A sin that is denominated plagiarism. And, sadest of all, it would seem plainly to indicate that the party is without the saving grace of God. We admonish all such to repent and renounce such base vanity. We are very far from possessing a knowledge of every thing that has been written, of which foolish men might covet the authorship; but we believe the good Lord will lead to a detection of all such efforts to purloin the credit due another person; and we humbly admonish every child of God to resist the devil if he ever tempts you to that sin.

CAMP GROUND WORK.

There is a great amount of work to do on the camp ground before the camp meeting, and the brethren there need help and have set Tuesday, May 9, as a time to set out shade trees, clear the ground and work on buildings, etc. A few loads of shade trees should be brought. There will be plenty of work for as many as can come. Brethren, you who live near enough, do not forget to lend a helping hand, and if convenient, see that their table is well provided. If you cannot come on Tuesday, come Thursday.

__________

CAMP AND GROVE MEETINGS.

_____

Let the saints every where send in notices and applications for meetings. Especially all early meetings should soon be published. In the June camp meeting here the work will be planned for the balance of the summer for all meetings called up to that time. By having the many places where meetings are called all brought together, they can be arranged in lines for different companies to fill at much less traveling expense than otherwise.

When brethren in the ministry say, in reply to an invitation, “If the Lord will, I will hold the meeting at your place,” they should regard themselves under positive obligations to do so, unless by special providence hindered, or by very positive and clear leadings of the Spirit, sent in some other direction. Last year some grove meetings were not held and the people were greatly disappointed, and the cause suffered.

__________

THE MASTER’S CALL.

_____

Once when Jesus sent some laborers out to rescue perishing souls, he said unto them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth more laborers into the harvest.” He commissioned them to go forth and preach his gospel, heal the sick, cast out devils, etc., and said “He that heareth you, heareth me, and he that despiseth you, despiseth me, and he that despiseth me, despiseth him that sent me. Yea he even said, “I give unto you power over ail the power of the enemy.” What a wonderful commission! A license issued from heaven, with words of authority spoken by the Master himself.

He did not send forth his messengers with a diploma of sheep-skin parchment from some biblical seminary, licensing them to go on a charge or a circuit wherever some conference might see fit to send them, but told them to go and preach the gospel. They were at liberty to go any place in the world where the spirit of the Lord would lead them to go. He did not promise them six hundred or a thousand dollars a year for working along highways and hedges; nor ten thousand dollars for city work, and a fine parsonage in connection with the same. Nay, but after promising them a number of good things providing they were willing to make the sacrifice, he told them they would receive such things together “with persecutions,” and that they would be cast out of the synagogues, reviled, hated, and have all manner of evil said against them for his sake, but if they were faultless, great would be their reward in heaven.

The Lord gives the same commission to his ministers whom he calls in these last days. Here we find one who has heard the Master’s call “Go work in my vineyard,” and he leaves all and hastens to join some conference in order to get his commission, but there he finds he lacks a two or three years’ course of reading, studying church history, etc., and even then, if successful, he must “run his chances” in getting a circuit. To such God says, “Come out from among them.”

Another one hears the call of the Master, and begins to try to muster up some excuse. “O Lord, I’m too ignorant, I am not a public speaker; the people would not listen to me; I am slow of speech. I would rather stay at home and earn money to send some one else who is more talented.” The Lord answers: “I will be mouth and wisdom unto you. Open your mouth wide and I will fill it. Be not dismayed, I will go with thee; I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.” It was my privilege a few years ago to have a little experience on this line, but had no better success in offering such excuses than Moses did.

Some one else says: Now Lord, you just wait until I get my farm paid for, or get out of debt and things in good shape, and free from the entanglements of life. But the Lord says, There are not yet four months and then cometh harvest, but “Lift up your eyes and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.” Souls are perishing all around us, and such a person may not be ready to thrust in the sickle until the harvest is over, unless he speedily submits to the will of God and goes forth.

Another one has a father, or mother and friends, and a good home they do not like to leave. Jesus gives us to understand that if we are not willing to forsake all for his sake and the gospel’s, that we are not worthy of him. But those who are willing, and do so, he will reward an hundred fold.

These are only a few of the many excuses brought up before the Lord. But he has a passage of scripture for every one of them. The servant of the Lord who is bound down with debts, a hundred acres of land to farm, a lot of stock to attend and a large family to keep, is truly in a critical condition if all depends upon him for keeping. Perhaps if the Lord had his way, some real estate and other hindrances would be turned into cash, to remove the debts, and a more fervent trust and moving out upon his promises would be made manifest. But there are some whom the Lord could use to his glory, who seem to be really bound down with one thing and another until their way seems completely hedged. Such are in a pitiable condition, it the Lord is really moving them to go forth. Perhaps someone else may be held responsible for lost souls, by not helping to set some minister free from some of his home duties. The Lord will never call a person to go and preach the gospel when it is impossible for such an one to go, when the time comes. The way, at the time when the call is made, may seem to be hedged, looking at it from a human standpoint; so it was with the children of Israel when they came to the Red sea. But a trust in God and a readiness to do his will soon opens the way which seems to have been paved mountain high.

When the Lord once lays his hand upon a person for his service it does not pay very well to try to shirk or move to some other part of the country to try to get away from the Lord or wear off the conviction. Jonah tried that once and made a failure of it. The one who has felt the burden of souls, and is staying around home or fooling away the precious moments, soon begins to feel a different kind of a burden — similar to that of a guilty conscience — and as the voice of the Lord is heard, “Where art thou (Adam)?” he feels more like saying, “Lord, I’m naked, I am destitute, and have not enough spiritual life for myself, without helping others, I guess you will have to let me off for awhile.” Would it not be sad for such a person to hear the Lord say, “I will take your talents and give to someone else who is more worthy?”

When the Lord drafts a person, simply buying or renting a farm, purchasing a yoke of oxen, marrying a wife, and such like does not remove the responsibilities of the call, unless such things are held in preference to the crown. Let the oxen go unproven, and he who has a wife, “be as though he had none.” By this we do not mean that such shall separate, but go and do the will of God even though the wife be unable to go along.

Then there is another class of people, who have taken their gripsack and gone forth, whom the Lord has never called. They hear that the Lord has made a call for some one to to go forth into his vineyard, and they think surely there is now a chance for me, and come to the Lord on this wise: “Now Lord, I have pretty good talents, I can preach, pray, exhort and sing, rebuke and reprove; all I ask is plenty to eat and wear and a good place to sleep, and I would even be willing to suffer sometimes for the sake of getting to go.” There are

Page 3

plenty of such ones out now who for the sake of souls ought to be at home where they could earn their living by the sweat of their brow, and get and keep an experience of salvation.

There are men and women though who are true soldiers for Jesus, ready for the conflict, consecrated to endure hardness as good soldiers, and go forth and battle against sin and Satan. Truly the true minister of God has many privations to endure, and needs the assistance and prayers of all the brethren. They not only have the promise of protection and help of the Lord, but have the glory of God in their souls and can abound in his love, with a hope of eternal life when their work on earth is done.

You whom the Lord has called, make a free-will offerring of yourselves, and as one of old say; “Here am I, send me,” And as you go forth doing his bidding, gathering sheaves into the garner of the Lord, the heavenly voice will be heard to say, in the fiercest battle; “Have I not sent thee?” Though your family may be poor, and you the least in your father’s house. Judges 6:15. Heaven has an abundance for those who are loyal to God and true to souls.

A FERVENT TRUST.

_____

O fear the Lord ye his saints; for there is no want to them that fear him. — Psa. 34:9. The true child of God is never in want. They that fear him and do his will are the people who have God’s promises; that the time shall never come when there shall not be meal in the barrel and oil in the cruse. Praise his name! By humility and fear of the Lord, are riches, and honor, and life, — Prov. 22:4. Look up, straight up, you will understand the end of man, and trace the way of God. Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. — Isa. 41:10.

No man is ever a loser, by fearing the Lord toomuch. For he keepeth all his bones; and not one of them is broken. — Isa. 34:20. If we fear the Lord he will not suffer us to be tried in such a way that we will lose it. The bones of a Christian are his faith and trust in God; destroy them and he falls to the ground. It is because he believes God that the righteous man can lie down and sleep under circumstances where a worldling would have to walk the floor and wring his hands in torment. I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep, for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety. — Psa. 4:8.

Blessed is the man that maketh the Lord his trust. The Christian is the only one who can make such a declaration; for none but the child of God knows that he will not suddenly be overtaken with calamity. Though we pass the valley of the shadow of death, we shall not fear; for he is with us; yea, he will guide us across the dark stream, for he is a lamp to our feet. And when we have crossed the stream our soul will take its flight through the region of light where we can live with him forever. Praise his holy name! Watch and pray, for the end is near.

HIS HEALING POWER.

_____

Dear Saints of God: Feeling that I owe all things to the dear Lord who hath so wonderfully delivered my captive soul from the dread power of sin and darkness; and desiring only that his dear name be glorified, I testify joyfully of the healing power of Him, “who forgiveth all our iniquities, who healeth all our diseases.” Bless the Lord O my soul, and forget not all of his benefits! Even since the Lord in his great mercy sent the light of full salvation to shine into my soul, I have felt to appeal to him in case of sickness. And several times the power of God was manifested in the healing of myself and other members of my family. But after our removal to where we could not call upon the elders, and comply with the word as laid down in James 5:14. I failed to take hold of his precious promises. “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you,” and looked to earthly help more than I should have done; as we were much afflicted, but praise God I know in mercy he afflicted me.

Finally our little daughter became very ill, her disease was pronounced spinal meningitis, and I felt that God alone could heal her. So we sent a message to the Trumpet family requesting their prayers in her behalf. And praise the dear Lord the work was done, and her recovery was wonderful. Some time afterward, she was greatly troubled with a weak digestion and other disorders arising therefrom. The Lord impressed me that I should look to him alone for help. And following the clear leadings of the Spirit, sent for an anointed hankerchief, and upon receiving it I felt the power of God upon me, and looking earnestly to him in prayer. I applied it in the name of Jesus. Instantly my soul was filled with the heavenly witness, and kneeling down, I poured out my heart in grateful praise to God, for his great mercy and loving kindness. Since then our little one enjoys perfect health and to God be all the glory.

I cannot say enough in praise of the dear Redeemer, who is daily leading me into a closer union with himself. My soul is filled with holy love and gratitude to God, whose gentle voice woke within my sinful heart, hungering after righteousness, which he has satisfied. Glory be to Jesus! My only desire is to be more like him, and glorify him in my daily walk and conversation. Your sister saved and sanctified,

__________

LIGHT vs SECRETISM.

_____

“Arise, shine: for thy light is come.” Isa. 60:1. For a great while I have been pondering over some little thoughts about the word “light.” What a blessed thought that light is universal! Like many of the gifts of God, it is given without respect to persons and without respect to character. Let us inquire what is here meant by “light.”

We must each of us realize an illumination of God in our individual soul. There must be a new revealing! We may have known as it were, the presence of God as the early Christians did; but what we want in our everyday life is a “personal illumination.” All through the Bible “light” means “a revelation of God’s divine will.” It is a “marvelous light.” But I want you who read this for a moment or two to consider the conditions upon which this light is given.

I. YOU MUST BE WILLING TO RECEIVE IT. Are you? Do you want to know God’s will concerning secret societies? Are you anxious to receive the light on this thing? Or are you like a man who has in his pocket a doubtful five-dollar piece, and who feels he would rather not tender it at the railway or post office because he is afraid it will not stand the test of the light? Do you want to know God’s will — the light? If so, if you say you are willing to receive it, do not shut your eyes and turn your backs and refuse light because you are afraid your actions will not bear the light upon them.

Now what is God’s will concerning secret societies? I will give it from his book — the Bible. “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works oа darkness.” Eph. 5:11. “Wherefore come out from, among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord,” etc. 2 Cor. 6:17. These two passages, and there are many more, reveal to us God’s will. Do you ask why you should not join a secret society? or why you should “come out from among them?”

  1. Because they are of the world and in their very nature are worldly, and he that would be in friendship with the world voluntarily renounces his friendship with God, and is therefore at enmity with God. And he says, “He that is not with me is against me.” Luke 11:23.
  2. Because they deliberately violate and request the candidate for initiation, to violate the commandments of the Lord.
  3. Because secret societies are a curse to our commonwealth, church and homes.
  4. Because they destroy man’s freewill agency and private judgment, making him a slave to the opinions, rules, laws and tyranny of others, in defiance to laws of God and morality.
  5. Because the very object of deriving benefit financial and otherwise in futurity is an evidence of a serious lack of faith in God. The blessed Word says. “Without faith it is impossible to please God.”
  6. Because to join or remain with an organization founded on secret- ism is a direct violation of God’s divine will. Now can you say honestly you are glad to receive the light? Are you glad to know God’s will?

II. The second condition is a WILLINGNESS TO WALK IN THE LIGHT, or in other words a WILLINGNESS TO REGULATE YOUR CONDUCT BY THE LIGHT THAT IS GIVEN. Now I want you to understand this one thing: God will not give you more light unless you act up to what has already been given you. It is unreasonable to suppose that God will give us more light when we are unwilling to act up to that we already have.

Now dear fellow-travellers to eternity, God has given you a revelation of his divine will. He has given you the “light.” He speaks even now to your heart and reveals the fact that you must renounce secret societies once and for all. You have the light. You know his will concerning you. Are you willing to obey him? Are you willing to walk in the light? Are you willing now to let God’s will be your aim and object to obey? Remember after you have received the light and refuse to walk in it, you voluntarily sin against God and are in danger of being cast into “outer darkness,” for sin shall not go unpunished. But walk in the light, obey the will of God. Let God have His own way with you now, and do whatsoever He commands you. “Come out from among them and be be separate.” Have no fellowship with the- unfruitful works of darkness.

News from the Field.

Portland, Ind., April 25, 1893.

Dear Brethren in Christ and beloved Saints every where: We thank God that we can again report victory through Jesus’ name. Our last report was from Berne, Ind. which was more of a seed-sowing, though several declared themselves free and acknowledged the truth, having received the light on sectism and were ready to step out of the sect. Some had already made their escape but had again become entangled with the Christian Alliance and Millennium doctrine. Praise the Lord, one dear soul made good her escape whom we left greatly rejoicing in Jesus. We believe the Lord has many people there. If some German brother could go there filled with the fire, a good work could be done. May God bless the dear people there for their kindness towards us. From there we went six miles east to Brother Isaiah Hockenberry’s. In this place we held meeting two weeks which resulted in the salvation of three dear souls, one of them being from the Progressive Dunkard sect. The first Sunday of the meeting, being April 2, four were buried with Christ in baptism. Sister Stetler came to the meeting the 8th and a number of the saints from Willshire, the next evening, which made us to rejoice in the Lord. Truly precious and sweet is the fellowship of God’s children. Truly God helped the dear sister send forth the awful words of truth which had a good effect. We left many convicted, but were not willing to yield. Returned to Bunker Hill and held a few meetings with the saints at that place that had been saved recently while we were in that place. On the 15th we returned home and are now ready to go whithersoever the Lord leads.

Your saved brother, washed in the blood of the Lamb,

Norfolk, Neb., April 28, 1893.

Dear Saints of the Living God: This morning I am praising God for his saving and keeping power, that keeps me from all sin. Glory be to his holy name! On April 15 I left home, South Auburn, Neb., for this place, and commenced German meeting in the Baptist meeting house. There were only a few that came out to the meetings, but glory be to God, the victory was ours in the name of Jesus. The Lord truly helped me in preaching his blessed word. Some were under conviction, but were not willing to yield to the call of God. May God help them to break Satan’s straps before it is too late. God also has a few of his children here who walked in all the light they had, I believe, but were praising God when they heard about this evening Light. May the Lord help them to walk in it. May the dear Lord bless also Brother Letto who is very much afflicted, and strengthen his faith. To morrow if the Lord willing I will leave for home, and go wherever he leads. I ask the prayers of the children of God that the Lord keep me faithful unto the end, and may the Lord send forth more German workers, for Satan has so bound the people down that the most of them believe if they belong to the sect they are all right, and take in all the pleasures of the devil. May God help them to get their eyes open before it is too late, is my prayer.

Yours in the one body, and washed by the blood of the Lamb,

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel led of the Lord to write our feelings this evening. We do praise the dear Lord for salvation full and free, and for faith and patience to endure all things. It has been twelve weeks since husband was burned, and he cannot turn himself yet, nor feed himself, nor sit up. It takes three men and myself to dress his bed and handle him. We have good neighbors to help us, but they do not know how to take hold by faith. They are kind hearted. The people have helped us some, for which we are sincerely thankful; and we have received $4.50 from the dear saints, for which we give God all the glory.

Dear Saints: I am glad to tell you that God is leading me in a wonderful manner at present. Such waves of glory and peace come over me and make me shout his praises. Glory be to our God! Last fall God led the saints at Greendoor to begin Sunday School, and the Lord chose me to teach the children, and by his grace I have been faithful to it all winter. Although sometimes I would be so tempted and tried to give it up and confess that I was not qualified for the work, but God never allowed me to do it. And now I can see his blessed will in it all. The piece of poetry in the Trumpet, March 30, “Your Mission,” seemed like it was meant just for me, especially the third and fifth verses. I believe God has been sinking me down deeper ever since. And now I am consecrated to teach the older people whenever the Lord wills. God is helping me to stand very firm on his word, it alone is my counsel. Truly I am standing on the sea of glass mingled with fire, and have perfect victory in my soul. Pray for me that I may ever do the will of God as he shall lead me. I am submissive to his will. I realize that God’s spirit is leading me. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. — Eph. 1:3.

Near Lawrenceville, Clark Co., Ohio, on the 21st day of April, Sister Emily Michaels, departed from this world of suffering and went to be with Jesus, her Savior; aged 24 years, 11 months, and 17 days.

She with her parents, came out of dead formality and received salvation last winter. Emily was very poorly with the consumption. Prayer was offered to God for her healing, with the laying on of hands, and anointing according to the scriptures. The power of God wonderfully came upon her and she seemed to be healed. Was able to attend meeting in the severe winter weather, testified boldly for her Lord. Was able to assist some at work. She had been poorly for about eight years. But in the providence of God, other forms, of affliction were permitted to come upon her body, and the Lord saw fit to take her home, to her “house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” She was very happy to the last. God gave her strength to rise, walk the floor, and praise him but four hours before her peaceful departure. She could truly say, O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin, but the blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, had cleansed her from all sin. Hence she could exclaim, “Thanks be to God who giveth us the victory.” She exhorted all her friends to meet her in heaven. With a sweet smile she wiped the tears from her mother’s face, and wished that she could see her smile. About her last words were, “PRAISE THE LORD; THE GATES ARE OPEN!” May the Lord bless and comfort her dear saved parents and save her brothers and friends who are yet out of Christ. Funeral services on Sabbath April 23, before a very large congregation of people in Lawrenceville. By the writer, assisted by Bro’s Schell and Warren.

LITTLE THINGS.

_____

Under this heading a good many matters were treated about and we would also like to direct the attention of the readers to some little things, which we are assured will surely be to the glory of God in some way. Our eyes have been, led to see the excessive use of candy, which is in no country of the whole world, as great as in that of our own. This desire for delicacies, this daintiness has also crept in among the children of God. It is to be considered as a very bad habit. God has surely not delivered us from one evil, in order to lead us into another one. Many whom God has delivered from the use of tobacco have become so accustomed to this other habit of chewing candy that they carry always a lot of it around with them in their pockets, and are scarcely able to abstain from the use of it during the time of public worship, and without paying close attention you can see some putting it in a kind of a sly way into their mouths. What benefit do they derive from it? Certainly none at all. To glorify God with it is absolutely impossible. To sweeten the stomach continually with this candy has a bad effect, as so much sweetness causes a sour stomach, spoils the appetite and ruins the teeth, and does not satisfy the hungry craving of the stomach, just as tobacco cannot do that.

The expenses of candy and like stuff are also to be considered and are not very small; they are not much less than those for tobacco, if they do not even exceed the tobacco cost. Just compare the statistics of the U. S. A. tobacco expenses with those of candy. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? — Isa. 55:2. Another thing we wish to notice is the use of perfumery. This habit of perfuming clothes and dresses and making a perfume factory of the temple of God, is also to be found among professing children of God.

When Paul writes to the Philippians, 4:18, that those things which he received of Epaphroditus, were an odor of a sweet smell to him, he surely did not mean any perfumery or any other kind of smelling stuff on the things or on the disciples’ clothes. If we have any money to do away with, let us do good with it; support the poor and the needy, for the poor are many which receive even the smallest gift with gratitude.

May the dear Lord help us to be free from all things contrary to his will, and may we earnestly covet after the best gifts only to be found in Christ Jesus. Amen.

HEALING OF THE BODY AND A TEST OF FAITH.

_____

Dear Saints: I feel it a duty as well as a pleasure to write my testimony concerning God’s healing power and how the devil tries to overpower us. I have been healed three different times, but never had my faith so tested as the last time which was two weeks ago to day. I had been suffering for about a week with a very severe cough, but it did not seem right to take medicine, so I did not take any, although the devil suggested several times that there was cough medicine in the house and that I had better take some or I might have consumption, but it seemed so wrong that I dared not do it, so I asked the Lord what I must do. Just before going to bed on Monday night I asked him,if it was not right to take medicine for him to take the desire all away, and I believed he would and went to bed, but could not go to sleep for coughing, but suddenly and instantly the coughing stopped and I felt the power of God sweeping over me. What a sweetness no one can know only those that have had a like experience, for tongue cannot tell. I touched my husband and told him I was healed, and praised the Lord. Oh I wish I could tell you how I felt! I could breathe so free and easy and every sign of disease was gone-. Even a sore spot that was on my stomach, that had troubled me for a long time; I thought it was a cancer, but it was all gone and I was so free and well. Praise the Lord! But now came the. trial. Next morning I wanted to go and tell my sick friend about being healed. She is a Swedish lady and I had been reading the Divine Healing book to her and trying to help her as the Lord led me. But when I began to get ready to go, I began to cough and my head began to ache. In an instant I knew it was of the devil and I knew the Lord healed me, so kept saying so and went on, but just as I got almost to the. house I was coughing so I did not know what to do. I stopped and thought, if I go on coughing this way, she cannot believe that the Lord has healed me, although I knew it so well myself, yet I could not see how she would believe it. So while I was trying to think what to do, the devil brought on such a fit of coughing that I thought I surely would choke to death. I never coughed so in my life. I shook so I could not sit still, and I could not control myself. I was on the street and passers by stopped to look at me. So I thought I would stop awhile and wait until afternoon and then go, so the coughing stopped too. Then I could see so much plainer that it was the devil, that I dared not go back home without going on as I had started, but wait until afternoon, but when I would think or say anything about going, I would cough a little. Finally I said, Lord, I know I am healed and I know that this is the devil trying to make me doubt it, and went on and the cough stopped altogether, until I had told her all about it, then suddenly and without any warning another spell took hold of me. I could not speak. I shook and choked for quite a while, but just as soon as I could speak I told my friend it was the devil trying to get me to doubt my healing, that he had tried it before and the more I talked and exposed the devil, the faster the cough left me and soon it was all gone and that is the last spell I have had. There was a little tickling in my throat, once in a while, for a day or so afterward, and that was all his work, for I know I was healed. Praise the Lord! You see it made the devil so mad because I was going to tell my sick friend about my healing, and try to help her to have faith to be healed. Oh he does try to take advantage of everything where he can, to keep us from testifying to the healing power of God, for he knows that is something to be desired and will expose him so. He does not interfere so much with people who do not expose him, but when he sees one healed by the Lord, he gets to work to try to stop it if possible from going any farther, for people have been asleep to that so long that he does not want them awakened. Oh how? good the Lord has been to us! I cannot tell it. Praise him forever!

Your sister,

Olive A. Edwards.

Dear Saints: I feel led by the Spirit to give my testimony and testify what the power of God has done for me, both soul and body. I received salvation in full six weeks ago. I was pronounced in first stage of consumption two years ago. I had the dear saints to lay hands on me and pray, and now can do a good days work, for which I am praising God and giving him all the glory. Praise his holy name! I want all of God’s people to pray for me.

Your brother saved and sanctified,

I have been in this blessed way of holiness over two years. Oh I am so glad that the dear Lord has saved me from all sin and sectism. Praise his holy name forever! I ask the prayers of all the saints for the work at this place, and pray for me that I may ever be ready to do my Master’s will.

Dear Trumpet Readers: For the first time in life, I will by the help of God write my testimony. Praise his holy name forever! He has saved me from all filthy habits, such as tobacco and coffee; and praise God, he gives me victory in my soul. I can never praise God enough for what he is doing for me continually. O how blessed to have Jesus dwelling within! O glory to his name!

Dear Saints: I feel this morning that it will be to the glory of God, to write my testimony, although for the first time. Praises to his holy name! I am sweetly trusting in my Savior. My prayer is, that God in his own time will make me complete in him, nothing wanting. There are no saints near this place, but when I go to Jesus at my own home he feeds my soul with living food. Praise the Lord! I ask an interest in the prayers of all the saints that I may obtain all that God has in store for me, through obedience to his will.

Your sister,

Dear Saints: I feel led to write my testimony. I am praising God this evening for salvation. I know that he is able and does keep me from all sin. I was sanctified wholly last August at the Norwood Mo., camp meeting. I thank my blessed Savior that I have found the true way of holiness. Pray for me that I may stand firm and that my husband may receive this blessed evening light. I haven’t been in a holiness meeting since we left Mo. I do not think there are any holiness people here except myself. I pray that God will send some of his holy ministers in this part of his vineyard. O praise the Lord for what he has done for me.

Your sister in Christ,

Mrs. Alice M. Fuller.

Dear Brothers in Christ: May God bless and keep you all forevermore. I am a new-born babe in Christ. I came out of a Campbellite sect four weeks ago, and am praising God with a salvation that saves to the uttermost. The evening light was first taught here by Sister Anna Kriebel and Bro. Green, and I with many others were cut off from God, by the truth, and I went forth for some time trying to justify myself in my ungodly- position, but finally gave up that I was in the dark and came out straight for God. Oh I am so glad that I was ever permitted to live to enjoy this blessed salvation, that saves us from all sin and keeps us pure, right here on earth. Oh praise the dear Lord for his tender care and keeping of the dear little ones at Cornell. Neb., while howling, raving wolves are on all sides, but thanks be to God. he is keeping us on the solid Rock, and the howling wolves cannot mar or move our faith. Praise the Lord for his powerful keeping of his children. Pray for us.

Your brother in Christ,

J. A. Taylor.

Dear Saints: To day finds me saved with an everlasting salvation, fully trusting in Him who is able to save us to the uttermost. I am rejoicing to day, with joy? unspeakable and that fadeth not away, because my name is written in heaven; and because the Holy Ghost has led and guided me into all truth. Oh how I do love the Father, Son and Holy Ghost and all the dear saints of the Living God! How it would do my soul good to have some of them come to this dark and benighted place and preach the gospel with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven. The only one of the dear saints I ever heard preach was dear Bro. Warner. God bless him and prosper the mighty work he is doing is my prayer. If any of God’s people are led to come to this place we would love so have them come and stop with us, and if any are passing through Colorado Springs please stop off and see us.

Your sister in the one faith,

Florence Shore.

Dear Saints: I believe it is God’s will that I should write this morning what the dear Lord has done for me. I was lost in sectism and drunk on Babylon wine, but the dear Lord redeemed me through the precious blood of Jesus. I had been hanging on to a dry profession without any grace of God in my heart. How I did call upon God to save my soul! To him be all the praise for calling me and giving me a heart of prayer to be saved. When I got real sin- sick then did God very unexpectedly send some of his true messengers’ to preach the true word to us. After a hard struggle under the load of sin for about two weeks, God spoke peace to my soul by taking away all my actual transgressions. Then I presented my body a living sacrifice. Rom. 12:1, and he sanctified me wholly, soul, body and spirit. 1 Thes. 5:23. Now he is wonderfully keeping me. To him be all the glory. Amen. Let all the saints of God pray for me that I may keep humble at the feet of Jesus, ready to do his blessed will in all things.

Your brother,

Jno. H. Merica.

Dear Gospel Trumpet Readers: I desire to tell you all that eight years ago my soul was lost in sin, but “God who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,” granted pardon of all my sins that I had committed against him. Praise his holy name for salvation so free! Four years after I was born again, I found out by? reading his word, Heb. 13:14. without holiness no man shall see the Lord. I began seeking this pearl of great price and found my Redeemer more precious to my soul than ever before. Last August I heard the saints at Dodge, Ky. testify of being delivered from sectarianism. So was I when God took inbred sin out of my soul, but I was like the man that was delivered from the use of tobacco, but just chewed on. I was delivered from, but by staying in sect Babylon, I was a sectarian all the same. At first I would not accept the light on the subject. But as I began reading, Eph. 1:22, 23, I saw clearly the church. Also, Col. 1:18, 24. My testimony is found in Eph. 2:18-22. This is why I write this morning. Praise the Lord for full and free salvation! Hallelujah! Amen.

Dear Saints: I praise God that I have this privilege of giving in my testimony? with the rest of the dear saints, and to tell of the perfect love of God that is shed abroad in my soul. Praise the Lord! I am saved from all sin, and sanctified wholly by a second definite work of grace.

Glory be to our God! I am walking in the light each day. Oh how wonderful it is! When we are willing and obedient to God, how he reveals his word unto his children! I am sinking, sinking deeper down, and proving all his holy will. I am dead to sin and alive unto God. I have been made a new creatute; old things that I once loved are passed away; behold all things are become new. I have made a complete concecration of everything, time, talent, and my life also. And I expect to spend all to his glory, in bringing poor perishing souls to Christ. God has called me to work in his vineyard. I have been working in God’s vineyard for over a year, and expect to continue all the rest of my days. Praise the Lord! I can go forth as Jesus commanded his disciples; for I have nothing but what I have on my body, for everything was burned up. I am trusting God to provide all that I need, for all these things were the Lord’s because I consecrated them all to him, and he saw fit to take them. It means something to be consecrated right to the bottom. If we are not we can never stand the test. It is easy to consecrate all to God while you have it in your possession. But when the Lord takes it away then is when the test comes. Many shall be purified, made white and tried. Dan. 12:10. Praise God for this wonderful salvation that keeps us through every trial and temptation! Pray for us. From your humble brother, saved and sanctified wholly,

Michael Stover, Jr.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led to write my testimony and tell what the dear Lord has done for me, how he saves me from all sin and confusion. I know I am kept by his mighty power each moment of my life. Oh I do praise his name this morning for this wonderful salvation that gives me perfect peace and happiness. I thank the Lord for sending his ministers to this place to preach the word in its purity, for I had never heard holiness preached before. I saw at once that this was the right way, and the Lord convicted me of my sins and gave me an honest heart, so that I humbled myself and gave up the world and all its sinful pleasures, and he wonderfully blessed and saved my soul. I am all on the altar, sanctified to do his will in all things, and mean to stand firm and true to the end, for the word says that only them that endure to the end shall be saved. Pray for my husband that he may be saved. I have been a member of the German Reformed denomination for thirty-twoyears, and I never knew what it was to have a change of heart. I was going along, making a profession and sinning all the time more or less, and God never knew me. I find we must be born again before we can please the Lord. Oh praise his name for the change! Our preacher would tell us. “Do the best you can, we all sin more or less every day, we can’t live in this world without sin.” Oh God help the people to get their eyes open to the truth and throw away their form of godliness, and get a Bible salvation and then they can live without sin. Oh I do praise God this morning that I am with my feet on the solid rock Christ Jesus, saved, sanctified and kept free from all sin, ready to do my Master’s will at all times. I ask an interest in your, prayers that I ever be kept humble at Jesus’ feet. Your sister in Christ,

Mrs. G. B. McCleary.
