Walking with Jesus.

_____

How blessed the promise,
That in storm and through flood
And the raging of fire,
I can walk with my God.

The fire will not burn me,
Nor the rivers o’erflow;
For Christ will be with me
To bless every woe.

I’ll walk through the valley
Of the shadow of death;
But in the dense darkness
I’ll feel his sweet breath.

My hand is in Jesus’,
Through calm and through gale;
“My mercy,” he tells me,
“Shall ever prevail.”

I’ll laugh through the billows,
While my Savior is near,
As I hear his sweet whisper,
“Oh! be of good cheer.”

This pathway of Jesus
Is a scene of delight;
For our feet never weary,
His burden is light.

So happy, so blessed,
And so thankful am I,
To know that I’m walking
With Jesus on high.

HOW DOES GOD SEND FORTH HIS MESSENGERS?

_____

JESUS says in his prayer, As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. How was Jesus sent? For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved. Why is the world condemned? And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light. Why love darkness rather than light? Because their deeds were evil. Jesus the light. Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world, he that followeth after me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. Have we the same light? Ye are the light of the world, a city that is set on a hill can not be hid. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven. So now we plainly see, on this line we have the same commission as Christ had, to be a light to the world and as salt of the earth. As salt is a preserving element, so are we to the world. Read 1 Pet. 2:12. Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles [sinners], that, whereas they speak evil of you as evil doers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. So we see we are the salt of the earth by showing good works. He gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

I wish to speak on good works, by way as Christ sent his disciples on before his face into the cities and villages, whither he himself would come, so also I feel God inspires me to exhort dear ones that are sent of God, to go likewise and distribute tracts and papers, also to canvas the good books which God is using to bring people to know the way of salvation and light. One dear sister who is a maiden lady has felt the call of God to canvas the book on divine healing, and is taking this course, which we feel is very pleasing to God. She goes into a town, there she commences to canvas and begins to inquire of the people for a place to work for her board nights and mornings, and before long Father supplies her with a home, and in going from house to house to sell books she has the opportunity of telling the dear people what wonderful things God is doing in these last times. They are amazed and say, Why don’t some of your people come here and preach? thereby opening the way for people to be ready to go to hear the truth when God sends some of his messengers there. Also when she finds sick, she administers to their needs by way of doing for them whatever her hands find to do, showing forth good works, preparing the hearts of the people for the truth. In this way fifty books have been sold in one town. Because people cry hard times, it is quite discouraging sometimes to look at it from a worldly standpoint, but when remembering not one step is taken in vain, inasmuch us your labor is not in vain in the Lord, thereby take courage and move on. I spoke of her being a single sister, because I believe God can use a single person in this work, for they only have themselves to care for. “But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord.” I hope many have availed themselves of the $10 offer on tracts. If you could see the amount of sermons preached through them, you would greatly rejoice with me. I came in personal observation where God used one tobacco tract as the means for a call for meeting. The effect was, that a church of over thirty was established on the rock. Praise God! Dear ones, these are the days that God will have to shorten or else there will no flesh be saved. Now we, God’s children, have this commission allotted to us; for this gospel must first be preached to all nations, then shall the end be. So the sooner the nations have the gospel preached, the more flesh will be saved. Ye are the salt of the earth. O let this ring in your ears; and remember souls are at stake, my brother. Let us not make excuses, but ask the Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? Your sister, eating of the bread that comes down from heaven,

A. A. Kriebel.

CHRISTIAN DUTY.

_____

WHAT is more blessed, more joyful in this life than to have the perfect peace of God within our soul, and to feel that we are wholly sanctified to do the will of our heavenly Father! How glorious to behold a family where father, mother, children, are all rejoicing together in the Savior’s love, where one can feel the unity of the spirit of Christ binding hearts together as one, rejoicing and praising God for the glorious salvation, the love of Jesus which we feel within our soul, and having the promise of entering into his rest! In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. — John 14:2, 3. What a glorious promise! How sweet it is to feel that our peace is made with God, and that where Jesus is, there we may be also! Oh dear brethren and sisters, we that are professing children of God, can we say from the very depths of our heart (and not merely from lips) that we are wholly sanctified to the will of God, that we can look to Jesus with an eye single to his glory, and take, him as our all in all, under every circumstance of life, when we are enjoying the blessing of health, and also when we may be upon the bed of languishing and pain?

When we can feel the love of Jesus burning within our soul and see our families rejoicing in God, how we are made to look upon our unsaved friends with sorrow and love for their poor souls! When we can see the aged with silvered hair, almost ready to pass off the shores of time, and can look upon the middle-aged and the young in the bloom of life, enjoying health and strength and seemingly the promise of a long life, we can but look upon such with a prayer ascending to the throne of grace for the salvation of their dear souls. What does look more sad to a Christian than to see an aged pilgrim tottering as it were upon the brink of the grave, with no hope in Christ, but sinning and rebelling against God? And also to see some that have professed to love God for a great many years, and are now living upon borrowed time, have past the allotted time of man, threescore and ten, and testify in their last days they are not enjoying Jesus within their soul as they have in days past and gone? May God help us to live that our last days may tell that we love Jesus as well as the days of our first experience. Oh that that love may increase instead of decrease! May God help each one of us who are his children to examine our hearts, our consecrations, and see if we are doing all that we can to rescue fallen man, to snatch them in pity from sin and the grave. Are we extending an arm of love? Do we drop a kind word here and there as we should, and bid them come to Jesus? Fathers, mothers, do we realize the great necessity of living true, devoted Christian lives before our children? Do we realize the great responsibilities that are resting upon us as parents in bringing up our children in the nurture and admonition of our Lord? How sad it does seem to see fathers, mothers going the downward road, the road to ruination, to despair, to misery and woe, and their children following in their footsteps, at last to launch their souls in that awful eternity! Fathers and mothers, that know not the ways of the Lord, will you not retrace your footsteps and turn from the downward road, and climb up Zion’s hill and bring up your children in the love and fear of God? Jesus’ precious words are: “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matt. 11:28. When a person is laboring under sin he is weary, he is heavy laden, and there is no rest within; but Jesus has promised to give rest unto the weary soul. “Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” — Matt. 11:29.

I was at one time conversing with an individual upon the glorious gospel and talking with her in regard to her soul; and tears flowed down her cheeks as she felt the need of salvation, and she spoke of her parents in this way: “I never heard my father and mother pray.” She carried the idea that if she had had a Christian influence around her when she was living with her parents, she might have enjoyed the love of God within her heart when she was young. Dear parents, let it not be said by your children after they have grown to manhood or womanhood that they have never heard their parents pray. How many people, that are making a profession, do not think it necessary to have family prayer! Some do not like to take time enough in the morning to take their precious Bible, and gather their family around them and read out of the precious Word and explain unto them God’s truths. And also at night the duty is neglected on account of the weariness of the body, and thinking it not necessary to have family worship. If there are any in this condition, in the name of Jesus let the blood of Christ be applied unto your hearts, and may you realize the time belongs to God and not to man. Oh how much we should thank our heavenly Father at night for his bountiful love, for his many blessings, his mercies that he has bestowed upon us during the past day, for his grace that has proved sufficient under the deepest trials and severe temptations of life! Dear ones, neglect not the duty that we owe unto our God, by lifting up our voice in prayer with true devotion and thanksgiving unto him who holds our lives in his hands. Praise our God for this wonderful salvation! I do praise God that I am saved just now, and basking in the sunlight of glory, giving God all the praise, the glory, the honor, for the wonderful peace of God that I feel within my soul.

“Joyfully, joyfully onward I move.
Bound for the land of bright spirits above;
Angelic choristers sing as I come,
Joyfully, joyfully, haste to thy home.
Soon with my pilgrimage ended below,
Home to the land of bright spirits I go;
Pilgrim and stranger no more shall I roam,
Joyfully, joyfully, resting at home.”

Your sister in Christ,

Cora Pierce,

BEHOLD HER DECEPTION.

_____

Dear Saints of God: I felt led to send you a few lines which may perhaps stir you up to the dangers of the teachings of the present day. It was said in olden times, that “Saul had slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” It was because David trusted in the mighty power of God. In days gone by I believe it was the same in the work of the Lord. It was also said, that “in olden times holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” But in these latter days, men and women have to speak as they are moved by the hired evangelist, or else do one of two things, keep silent or leave the meeting. I have been attending meetings this winter where they have counted their converts by the hundred, and the query has arisen in my mind, how is it that those who proclaim the whole truth of God’s power to save, appear to have fewer converts than those who deal with the precious gospel slightly, and these are a few of the facts I have learned. I attended the “The Hammond” revival. I do not remember hearing anything said of God’s power to save from sin. and the leaders claimed so far three hundred conversions, in other words, they signed the “Covenant Card.” I have attended the Methodist meeting where they had two noted evangelists and they claimed two hundred conversions. Their system was to get all they possibly could to the altar, by strategem or otherwise, and after a few formal prayers the hired evangelist would pray aloud and call on all at the altar to repeat the prayer, said prayer being so worded that all who repeated had to say they were now trusting in the Savior and he accepted them; and as they arose they were all pronounced converted. It does seem to me that this teaching is not only wrong and misleading but is clearly identical with the priest and confessional.

I am very thankful that Jesus saves me, not by any form or ceremony that I have performed, but through separation from sin and the world, and trusting in the mighty power of God. If we seek God with all the heart we will find him. And while others say we had better join this or we had better join that, I am glad to say I am satisfied with Jesus, and I don’t wish to join anything else. Your brother in the Lord,

John Kneale.

Dear Saints of God: I am praising God for a free and full salvation that keeps me every day of my life. The dear Lord has wonderfully changed my heart; he has taken away all desire for the pleasures of the world, also destroyed the old carnal nature. Praise his holy name forever! Wife and I were saved some eighteen months ago, from all sin and out of Babylon. To day I stand free from all human organizations and I am now all alone in the one body of Christ, wife having just recently passed over the river. I feel more determined now than ever. Pray for me.

Dear Saints: My testimony is, I am still praising God for a full and complete salvation and for perfect victory in my soul. Oh the sweetness and completeness there is in Christ! He has saved me from all sin, and the peace and the joy that comes from the Father above is more than my tongue can express. And by the loving grace of God I intend to keep myself unspotted from the world, and be in readiness for the coming of Christ. Praise the blessed Jesus that has liberated me from all sects, and placed me in his body to suit himself. All honor and glory to him forever! Your saved and sanctified brother,

Dear Trumpet Readers: I do praise God for a full and free salvation, that he keeps me from sin and from the power of the devil. Since I was sanctified I have been through some hard trials of my faith, but I do praise God for constant victory over the devil. I do thank God to day that I am saved, sanctified, made pure and white in my Savior’s blood. We have a little band of fifteen. We do have such good meetings twice a week at our homes. We all praise God for the evening light. Pray for us all. Yours in Christ,

Dear Trumpet Readers: feel led of God to write my testimony, for the first time. Praise the Lord! I have perfect victory in my soul, through the cleansing blood of Jesus, which keeps me free from sll sin. Was converted and joined the U. B. sect when near eighteen years of age. My experience of twenty years in the sect was unfruitful in the vineyard of the Lord, sinning and repenting, doubting my salvation. How could I make any advancement in the grace and love of Jesus? The last few years of my life in the sect my doubts were removed and I tried earnestly to do a work for God, and live a true Christain life. But there seemed a spiritual coldness in the sect that was contagious, and in spite of all my efforts to do good my soul was not satisfied. When Bro. and Sister Riggle first came to this place in November, I knew nothing of the evening light. After hearing a few sermons, especially one on sanctification, I knew why my soul was not satisfied. I saw the light and stepped into it. I was wholly sanctified and the Lord wonderfully strengthened my soul in his love. Since then, I’m all laid on the altar, which is Jesus Christ, determined to do his will in all things. Oh I do praise God to day for the sweet peace I enjoy in my soul. Pray for me. Your sister, saved and sanctified through the blood of Jesus,

Anna Reits.

For the benefit of some, who have written to us under a misunderstanding, again we report, as we ever have taught, that we condemn no persons for what they may see fit to eat. The questions of meats, in the light of the New Testament, is not a question of legality, or of any ceremonial distinction, or of direct religious scruples. But it is wholly a question of good health, or sickly bodies. If you violate natural laws, you suffer the penalty. If you inform yourself as to what will cause suffering, and impair physical energies, and also what line of foods, and other natural causes will reward you with the blessing of good health, and conform to the latter, with a single eye to the glory of him who is the Author of natural laws as well as spiritual, you are just as sure of your reward, as the laws of God are immutable. And thereby you will be a happier and more useful man. But if you disregard the conditions of health, and entail suffering upon yourself, it is your own business and not mine. Nevertheless for the good of all, we are willing to teach the path of health, but claim no scripture authority to do more than advise men.

A DAY FOR FASTING AND PRAYER.

SUNDAY, APRIL 15.

For some time we have felt led to appoint a day for fasting and prayer, and ask the dear TRUMPET readers to join with us in supplication to God in behalf of the publishing work here and general advancement of the work of the Lord everywhere, and especially for the removal of the indebtedness of the Office. As we have been in debt almost ever since the publishing work was first started, we feel moved of the Holy Spirit to proclaim a fast for the removal of these debts, that we may owe no man anything, and be better able to push the work of the Lord more abundantly by way of spreading holy literature, and pay as we go. Pray also for the Children’s Home at the camp ground near here.

__________

As we have announced a day for fasting and prayer, doubtless it would be well to speak a few words concerning the work. First we would say that we have no complaints to make, for the Lord has abundantly helped us in the work of spreading the gospel for the rescue of souls, and has kept our souls joyful in glory, filled with praises to his holy name.

Since Jan. 1, 1894, we have sent out about two million pages of holiness literature to various parts of the world, and especially throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe; and we have almost that amount on hands, which will soon be ready to send out. Most of what has been sent out was for free distribution. In about ten weeks time the Lord enabled us to send out over 250,000 tracts from one to fifty pages each, for distribution.

For several months our postage alone has averaged over $100 a month, while the money spent for paper during the year will amount to thousands of dollars a year instead of hundreds; paper being ordered each week in lots from a few hundred pounds up to five tons at a time. Our last order, a few days ago, for paper for free tracts, amounted to over a ton and a half.

We do not speak of any of these things boastingly, for the success of the work is only through the Lord. To him be all the praise! And we only mention these things for the glory of God, the encouragement of the workers in the gospel vineyard, and that you may all know better how to pray for the advancement of the work, for we do feel that it ought to be multiplied a hundred fold. Our present paper bills which are unpaid amount to a little over $1,000. Paper dealers allow from thirty to sixty days time to their customers. The Lord has always enabled us to make satisfactory payments on our paper bills in the past, and we believe that he wilt even do better by us in the future and help us to pay as we go and not even wait for the allotted time given. But aside from the paper bills are scores of other bills to be constantly met in order to push the work of the Lord along which he has abundantly supplied. Praise his name! Many times our faith has been tested almost to the utmost, but we have found the Lord true to his word. And it has often occurred that when we seemed to be the most closely pressed financially, that the Lord would order an advance of the work by way of purchasing more machinery, etc., to the amount of several hundred dollars.

Two years ago the Lord moved upon us while in such trying circumstances to purchase a new press and other machinery. After fasting and prayer to be sure that it was the Lord moving regarding the matter, with only a few dollars in our pocket we went to Chicago and purchased machinery for the work of the Lord, to the amount of over $2,000 to be paid for in thirty days. Having no money in the bank, nor none at home with which to pay for the same, yet knowing of a certainty that the Lord had directed, we were confident he would in some way supply the means. When the day of settlement came, by borrowing $900 we were enabled to pay off the whole amount. For $700 of the money borrowed we mortgaged our dwelling house, which is the home of the Trumpet family. Since that time the mortgage has been released and the whole amount borrowed, reduced to $600. These are the debts we have been led to ask God to remove, and we are confident that the time is near at hand, although we do not know where it will come from or in what way he will bring it about.

This we know, that the Lord is moved to answer when his true children come to him in fasting and prayer. A few months ago we had several hundred dollars to raise more than our usual expenses, and after much prayer to God we were led to have the machinery stopped, and all the workers and members of the family to gather together at the busiest hour of the day on Tuesday and have a prayer meeting to ask God to supply the means. One week passed by with only about the usual amount of means sent in, so we held another prayer meeting at the same hour on Tuesday. Another week passed by with about the same success as far as money was concerned, so as we gathered together the third time for prayer, we realized that over thirty workers sacrificing an hour in the busy part of the day, and meeting with one accord would surely move God to answer, and we announced that we would spend the hour in a praise meeting, thanking God for hearing and answering prayer. The enemy of souls knowing the effect of such, tried to throw a pressure over the meeting to keep us from feeling thankful when we had yet seen no fruits in answer to prayer, but we all thanked God with grateful hearts, in faith believing. A few minutes later the mail train came in and soon a letter was brought in which read as follows: “Enclosed find a bank draft for $100 to be used to the glory of God.” This was soon followed by other donations, and orders for books, etc., for which we were truly thankful to God.

Within the last few months we have added a new engine and boiler room, a ten-horse-power engine and a fifteen- horse-power boiler, and other machinery, and steam heating which has all been paid for. The Lord has supplied us with a large force of good consecrated workers, who willingly give their services free, as unto the Lord.

The constant financial pressure in which we were obliged to daily trust God for means to carry on the work, also for daily food and raiment for a family of nearly forty persons, has been a real drill of faith, which has only more fully fitted us for other lines of gospel work. Let us each one make the day of prayer a real heart-searching time, and one of sinking down into God, to be better qualified for future work. The Trumpet family sends much holy love to all the Trumpet readers, and humbly asks an interest in your prayers.

Dear Trumpet Readers: God bless you all. We are saved, and kept by the power of God. Since our last report we came home to Payne, where Bro. Wickersham and wife and Mother Smith held meeting. God was there in power and several souls saved. Friday, 23d, we came over to the Fisher school house, three miles northwest of Scott and began meeting, where God blessed us in preaching the word, and several saved. We believe others will be saved before the meeting closes. We ask the prayers of God’s people. We expect, the Lord willing, to go home to attend to some business, then be ready to go again wherever the Lord leads, far or near. Your brother in the one body,

Dear Saints of God: We are well and full of joy in the God of our salvation. Hallelujah! We just closed a three weeks meeting ten miles west of this place, the 13th of this month, which was owned and blest of God. Some dear souls made their escape from the soul-sleeper sect. Some left the M. E. sect. The holy Spirit witnessed to the blessed word as it was ministered to the people. At the close the meeting six dear souls followed the dear Lord in baptism, after which there was an ordinance meeting; fourteen took part. Two were healed of their infirmities. This country is ripe for the gospel. The harvest is truly great, but the laborers are few. Many calls for meeting. Oh where are the reapers? We ask the prayers of the saints.

Your sanctified brother,

M. A. Fly.

Gospel Trumpet: As we have not written for some time, we feel impressed to make a brief statement of how and what God is doing for me. He is keeping me each moment by his power and is greatly helping along in this high and holy way. Since my last report I held a three weeks meeting in Cowley Co., Kan. and had some very precious times. Two converted and one sanctified, after which we spent a season at home, and came to Missouri. Had about four weeks work in Vernon Co. The Lord helped us to preach a full and free salvation. Some work was done for God. We met with dear Bro’s Caldwell and Rapp, who are both preachers of the Lord. Bro. Caldwell, formerly of Kansas, is doing what he can to hold up the right way. Bro. Rapp is with us in this work, which is in a new field. Interest good and congregations quite large. Some opposition. Will be here for a short time. Pray for us and the work of salvation. Yours saved and kept.

Dear Saints of God: On Lord’s day, March 18, in Jesus’ name, I commenced a meeting at the Hopeville school house. Had good congregations, very good order. No consecrations here yet, but the dear people acknowledge it to be the gospel. Will very likely close the meeting on to morrow evening, as they are very anxious to have a meeting at Mt. Carmel, M. E. meeting house. Expect to get back over this same ground again in the near future. It seems that I can’t do more than sow the seed of the kingdom. The evening light or present salvation has never been preached in this country before. It seems like a new doctrine to the people, and they appear to be afraid to accept, and still declare it is the word of God. I will go on doing my duty,

leaving the result in God’s hand. I preach in the evening, and through the day do all the visiting I can, talk salvation and sing and pray with the dear people. These hills are hard to climb, but Father gives me strength. I am fully saved sanctified, and satisfied with Gods arrangements.

Your all sold out to Jesus,

Dear Trumpet Readers: I can report victory in the name of Jesus over all the powers of the enemy. Praise the dear Lord! In our last letter we spoke in regard to the meeting we were then holding. The meeting lasted four weeks with grand success and great victory on the Lord’s side. There were between twenty-five and thirty consecrations. Quite a number saw the light and came out of the Babtist sect and declared their freedom in Christ Jesus. Much conviction was resting on many hearts. After the close of the meeting we came to our home at Guy’s Mills to see to our things and close our house, which the dear Lord showed us that we must do, and work for him. In a few days we expect to return to Erie Co., and begin meeting a few miles from McLallen’s Corners. The people in that country are very anxious for the truth, and quite a number have started out in the good way. There are a good many to be baptized. During the meeting there were three cases of divine healing, for which we give God all the glory. Oh praise the dear Lord forever! Your brother and sister in Christ,

E. J. and W. G. Billig.

Gospel Trumpet: The Lord gave us a precious little meeting in a school house, about five miles east of the Eubanks meeting. Interest good. Six claimed justification and four of them afterward consecrated for and testified to sanctification, and were baptized, and others were left seeking. We then returned to the Eubanks meeting and continued with them for more than a week; while God wonderfully increased the faith of the dear willing ones, yet some failed to get settled down in the word of God so as to have complete victory over the devil at all points, but want to walk by feeling, instead of faith, like little children crying for candy, and refusing good healthy food — “desire the sincere milk of the Word, that ye may grow thereby.” — 1 Peter 2:2. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” Matt. 4:4. Let all the dear saints pray for them, and especially for Bro. Cloe, that God may fit and use him to his own glory. When I got back to this point I learned that meeting was just starting at Galena, near this place. I found Bro. Keeling here and ready for the battle. May God bless all the dear saints everywhere. Amen. Continue to remember us in your prayers. Your free and happy brother in Christ,

Dear Saints of God, Greeting: I am happy to report salvation from all sin. Wife and I arrived at Weston, Wood Co., O., Feb. 24, and commenced meeting in the neighborhood of Bro. Wm. Long’s in the name of the Lord Jesus. Mother Smith also came over and labored with us during the meeting. The meeting continued over three Sabbaths and was a success in the way of preaching the word, edifying the church and restoring backsliders. We were all made to rejoice on the account of the restoration and salvation of Brother and Sister Spackey. May God bless them and keep them in his love and make Bro. Spackey a flame of fire. May God bless the little church near Weston and give them victory at all times over all the powers of darkness. March 12, in company with wife and Mother Smith we met the dear saints at Payne, O. which was joyous indeed. The results of the meeting were good. The devil tried to stupefy the saints in the beginning of the meeting by a drowsy, sleepy spirit which we could not account for; but by prayer and supplication to God the powers of hell were dispersed and souls were saved and believers sanctified, also some were healed by the power of God, for which we give him all the glory. We were happy to meet in this meeting our co-workers in the ministry, Bro. Worden, the two Bro’s Howard and their wives, also Bro. Moore and Sister Metter. May the Lord ever bless them in the work of the Lord. Amen. Your brother saved in Jesus,

H. C. Wickersham.

Dear Trumpet Readers: We are glad to report to you victory on the Lord’s side and victory in our souls over all the works of darkness. We came to this place one week ago to day, but have been having very bad weather for meeting, or at least to start a meeting. We expect to begin meeting this week at Harbor Springs, the Lord willing. In our last report we stated we were going to Dorr to have a few meetings. We did go, and enjoyed a very good meeting, but just at that time the mud was so deep the people could scarcely get out, but those that could get out were greatly strengthened, and some precious souls who are Catholics were greatly interested and expect to come to the camp meeting in June. They have been very kind to us and I pray God to save their souls. We had some very precious meetings with the dear ones in Hopkins at the Page school house, and the night before we left we had the privilege of enjoying one of the most blessed ordinance meetings I ever attended. Truly the Lord was with us. We did greatly rejoice in the Lord and our hearts were melted together. Five precious souls came to the altar and all received the witness to their pardon and testified to the same; and others received a settling down in the Lord. There are many doors open for meetings in these parts, and I pray the Lord may give us success in delivering his word, and precious souls be made free. Yours in Jesus,

Dear Brethren in Christ: It has been some time since we have written. We have been silent with the pen, but have not been silent in the work of the dear Lord. Truly we have enjoyed many precious seasons with the dear Lord. In the fore part of the winter we visited the saints in a number of places in Adams Co., Ind. Some who had backslidden were restored to the faith, and the saints greatly strengthened and knit together in love and established in the present truth. Also held meeting in some new places with victory. People generally received it as the truth, but were not willing to separate from the world, but we feel that there was much good seed sown. Wife and I went to Bunker Hill school house in Adams Co. and held meeting one week, which resulted in the salvation of one dear soul. They desire a meeting there again the latter part of May or first of June. We will just say that we are free and ready to go whithersoever the Lord leads, as we feel the hand of God upon us for the work. Though as yet our health is poor, we feel that we are slowly gaining and our eyes have been to some degree restored, but as we see that the work is great and laborers few, and precious souls starving for the bread of life, and but a short time to spread the good tidings, my soul is greatly stirred within me for dear souls that are fast sinking to despair. Oh let us work, my brethren, as never before. Address us at Portland, Ind. From your saved brother and sister in the Lord,

Dear Saints of the Living God: We are all quite well and joyful in glory. He is also our only physician; our all and in all, and our souls are truly on the forward move with God. Hallelujah! The cause of God is truly prospering, increasing and spreading on the coast. The church of God in Washington is increasing with the increase of God. Oh how much is yet to be done for the Lord! May he send many more true, consecrated workers out here. Dear Bro. and Sister Orr, does not the Lord want you out in Washington? Dearly beloved, take it to God in prayer and see if he is not sending you out here. We hope it will please the Lord to send Bro. and Sister Merritt out here soon. The Lord has need of a single and fully consecrated minister or two, to come out here in the work. Those who come, should come fully prepared and consecrated to stay and labor on the coast for years, if the Lord so leads. Who is God stirring up by his Spirit to come and labor in these parts? Some ought to come soon, or immediately after the Michigan, June camp meeting. On the coast is the place to find out how deep and complete your consecration is, for it requires a real rock-bed and solid faith and consecration to labor in the gospel here.

The meeting at the Hickman’s school house begun the 2d, and closed the 18th, with a glorious victory for the cause. We praise God for the deliverance and salvation of our beloved Bro. and Sister Davis in that meeting. The sister had been a member of the M. E. sect for nine years, but now they are praising God for real salvation. Dear Bro. Martin of Colfax, was present some in the meeting, whom the Lord also used to his glory. Bro. and Sister Tubbs have been a precious help and comfort to us in the gospel since we left the camp meeting last June. Pray for us. Yours in Jesus,

Dear Loved Ones in Jesus: Salvation work is moving on gloriously in southern Kansas this winter. God is leading out young workers and is blessing them with a fruitful harvest of souls. Truly “the stone cut out of the mountain without hands’’ is filling the whole earth. Hallelujah to our God! The Lord blessed our labors near Anthony and brought back several prodigals, and put the best robe on them and there was rejoicing among the redeemed. Notwithstanding snowdrift and sickness, about twenty-five dear saints met at Bro Shrawyer’s house and were happy in washing one- another’s feet, and in the communion of the loaf and cup. Bless the Lord!

Parting with the loved ones there we came to Bro. J. F. Prouse’s home five miles north of Anthony and remained over Sabbath. One dear old grandma was reclaimed, one sanctified also one converted. We next came to Stafford, but held the meeting at Bedford six miles north-west of Stafford. The saints attended and were refreshed; over twenty were converted most of which had never tasted of the grace of God before. Fourteen were baptized and a few crossed over into the Canaan rest of holiness. Bless the Lord! Meeting lasted three weeks. We then went twenty miles south, near Inca in Pratt Co., and continued two weeks in a school house where the seed had been sown about two months ago by Bro’s Helm and Bennett. Several obtained a clear experience of regeneration, a few of that number with others obtained the Sanctifier and their hearts were purified by faith. About twelve entered the second grace, four were baptized, others will follow soon.

On the evening of the twenty-seventh, a good congregation assembled at Bro. Davis’s house and twenty-six observed the ordinances of the Lord’s house and all were exceedingly blest Praise the Lord for his presence and approval! The following day we returned to Stafford and on Tuesday evening the twenty-ninth we met with the saints at the home of Bro. Isherwood, and only about twenty- seven were present to observe feet washing and communion service, and four dear souls came to the altar, three of whom testified to the cleansing. We start this evening for Prosser, Neb. Pray for us and the work in the west, as many places are open for the gospel and the laborers are few.

Your sanctified brother and sister,

Geo. L. and Mary Cole.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I am still rejoicing with freedom in the love and power of Jesus. Praise his dear name! For our God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind. Oh how I love this blessed holy rest! The way grows brighter day by day. This is a wicked, sinful country. My prayer to God is that he will soon send heavenly anointed heralds through here. I know God has a people here. So do pray mightily with me, that truth may yet prevail here in this land of darkness, and for me that I may continue to walk worthy for the Lord, unto all pleasing, and be faithful in every good work. I wish to testify to the glory of God through the TRUMPET to what God had done. I do know that I am justified and sanctified wholly. It seems like I cannot render enough thanks to God. Oh! it is wonderful what he has done for me and my dear husband, and other dear souls. I give God all the glory. For he makes me whole and I am underneath his precious blood. I read the book on Divine Healing that a dear sister loaned me and I saw they had great faith, and I felt like writing to them to pray for my dear husband. So I sent a letter to the Trumpet Office, and before I heard from them, I felt within my soul that they had prayer for my dear husband. I feel like I was stronger in faith, believing firmly that God was going to save dear husband; and also a dear sister and I agreed to pray, and so many faithful prayers were offered at a throne of grace for his soul, and I knew God could not lie. Sister and Brother Cole held a meeting here at Bedford, and he came to the mercy seat and God did abundantly pardon his sins. I thank God from the depths of my heart for all of this. Glory to God! Your sister saved,

Dear Brethren in Christ: I am saved and sanctified through the blood of Christ. I was converted while in the M. E. church, but I was not satisfied with their understanding of the Word. I believed the Word taught holiness, and I knew they did not observe all things God commanded. And God speaking in his word, and also through the teaching of some of God’s dear saints I was led to present my body a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which was my reasonable service. How wonderfully he opened the eyes of my understanding. A few weeks ago, I heard the word, “Come ye out and be separate.” I complied, knowing from past experience that God means perfect obedience. The enemy of the soul says, “Ask for a letter, it will cause such a sensation, they will think you have backslidden.” God does not desire a letter of recommendation. He also knows whether I am his child or not. Oh I do thank God for the sweet communion of his holy Spirit, the blessed light and revelation of his truth! I am so glad for the rest and peace he has promised to those that trust him. In the deepest clouds of sorrow we can rejoice with joy unspeakable. Let us pray much for the many dear honest hearts, that they may see the blessed light. The world is wrapped in spiritual slumber, millions of dear souls for whom Christ died and shed his own life’s blood, are soothed and lulled into an appalling state of careless indifference. Oh that they may be awakened from their deplorable condition and be delivered from the thralldom of eternal woe. I do praise his holy name for what he has done for me. I do feel so free in Christ Jesus, realizing that I am a child of God, not saved through any other name but Jesus. Your sister in the bonds of Christian love,

Libbie Reese.

BABYLON HAS FALLEN.

_____

I have copied an article from the so-called Christian Advocate, written by a blind leader who signs his name, Wilber F. Steele, S. T. D. of Denver. In this article he tries to make sport of divine healing, counting it as a thing of the past. He begins with Jas 5:14, and says, “Scripture translation means more than mere exchange of words. Ancient words, idiom and thought must be entirely recast; and minted into the currency of to day. The Biblical oracles must think their thoughts afresh in phrase and figure and circumstances of A. D. 1894. In fact the Bible is to be worked out by the rule of three; thus. As the ancient state and thought : the words of Jesus in his time : : present state and thought : ? a problem in which? equals what Jesus would say now concerning the matter under consideration.” “The slightest degree of attention bestowed however upon these passages will satisfy the candid student that the word in the epistle of James, now in view had no religious signification, but that, it had regard simply to the employment of oil as medicine. After Aaron had donned the high priestly robes, miter, and crown, a quantity of oil was poured over him, until it ran down upon the beard and his costly robes. While we pray for the unction of the Holy Spirit in ordination, what consternation and offense would be the pouring of half a pint of oil upon episcopal and presbyterial head and broadcloth! there would soon be a demand for loanable ordination garments, as our immersionist friends have baptismal trousers. Oil dropped on a hundred dollar suit, or a spray of perfume from an atomizer would be deemed among us as highly inhospitable. In James’s time the medicine men used oil and any means within their knowledge, usually adding charms and mummeries, and the use of some great name. And rather than that indisposed Christians should countenance such quacks, James advises that the elders be called, that the patient be rubbed with oil, not however with appeal to imaginary healers, but in the great name, and that faithful prayer be made for the efficacy of the medicaments applied. The lesson from James translated in our times is this: To the wisest use of the best remedies known, ever add trustful Christian prayer, the oil of to day comes in the vials of the clearheaded, God-fearing physician.”

Who but those destitute of. God’s love, and are bound by sectish chains to some fallen creed, cannot see a great contrast between such sophistry and God’s holy word? How dark this picture, to think that intelligent beings and those pretending to preach God’s word, will tell us that the everlasting word of Jesus is to be recast, or manufactured over and twisted to suit the depraved hearts of heretics in these days of sectish night! His problem would be this, what would Jesus say about divine healing, anointing with oil, etc. in these times when men worship the creature more than the Creator? Let us learn from God’s word what he would do. Eighteen hundred years ago Jesus commanded the apostles to teach the people what he taught them; and they preached that men should repent, and anointed the sick with oil and they were healed. Mark 6:12, 13; 16:18. He says, “teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and lo I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” Matt. 28:20. Praise the Lord! These commands and promises belong to us, even till time shall end. “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and forever.” Heb. 13:8. His word being forever settled in heaven, Psa. 119:89, he says the same thing to day that he did over eighteen centuries ago. James got his teaching from Christ, so he positively says the prayer of faith shall save the sick. And all who have the spirit of God agree with the teachings of his divine word. This false teacher says it had regards simply to the employment of oil as medicine.

O ye priests of Baal! from whence cometh such erroneous and perverse teachings? Not from God’s word, and not from the Holy Spirit, for it agrees with the Word. Then it comes from some other source, yea from the abyss of darkness, from whence cometh all corrupt doctrines. The anointing of Aaron has nothing to do with the word in Jas. 5:14. For we are ministers of the New Testament and it nowhere commands the use of oil in ordination, nor do God’s ministers have to use a half a pint of oil to anoint a sick person, for the efficacy is not in the oil but the obedience to and faith in God’s holy word. God’s people do not wear hundred dollar suits, but dress in modest apparel; nor do they smear the oil over the garments, but anoint the afflicted parts of the body as far as practicable. The Word nowhere tells us that God commands this just to keep from being imposed upon by quacks nor do God’s people pray to some imaginary healer, but to the living God who is touched with the feeling of our infirmities; who forgiveth all our iniquities; who healeth all our diseases. Psa. 103:3. The omnipotent God does not tell us to give medicine and pray for the efficacy of that, but to anoint with oil in obedience to his word. Jesus says, If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Jno. 15.7. All who have the words of God abiding in them do just as the Word teaches; being obedient, they eat the good of the land. To comply with God’s word is all that is obligatory on our part; faith and obedience brings the fulfillment of the promise, and all the efficacy is in the power of God to heal. Praise his holy name!

Notice the last clause, “The oil of to day comes in the vials of the clearheaded, God-fearing physician.” O ye blind guides! when will you cease to pervert the ways of the Lord? you are preparing human souls for fuel to kindle the flames of dark despair, remorse and woe. You will not enter the kingdom of God nor allow those that would to enter. This writer agrees with the discipline of the fallen creed to which he is married. We will compare it with the word of God and see if they harmonize. In the M. E. discipline, second article we read that “Christ was crucified, dead and buried to reconcile his Father to us.” The Word says, “And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ.” 2 Cor. 5:18. O what a contrast! M. E. ism teaches that God must be reconciled or brought down to suit the sectish doctrines that have emanated from corrupt hearts; and God says we are to be reconciled to him, his ways and his word. Art. 27, in speaking of her societies, Methodism says, “Such a society is no other than a company of men having the form and seeking the power of godliness.” Here they acknowledge they have nothing but a form, and are seeking the power. Jesus says, “Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you.” Acts 1:8. The Holy Spirit is the sanctifier. Rom. 15:16. And it makes all one. Heb. 2:11. So if people would lay aside the form and get the spirit of God, they would have the power, and that would lead them out of all sects and formalism into the one body of Christ.

Page 80, “The chief reason that the people under our care are not better, is because we are not more knowing and more holy, and we are not more knowing because we are idle.” How true! The Lord says “the watchmen [preachers] are blind and ignorant, as dumb dogs that cannot bark, sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber [idle]; they cannot understand,” Isa. 56:10, 11, because they are not knowing and holy. Pages 83-4, “Personal religion, both toward God and man, is too superficial among us. How little faith is there among us! How little communion with God! How little living in heaven, walking in eternity, deadness to every creature! How much love of the world, desire of pleasure, of ease, of getting money! How little brotherly love! * * * What gossiping, evil speaking, tale bearing! What want of moral honesty! * * * Our religion is not sufficiently deep, universal, uniform: but superficial, partial [sectish], uneven.” What mine is there, though instigated by some diabolical friend, could portray a darker picture than the one we have before us? How little love of God, faith, communion with God! So much love of the world! Read 1 Jno. 2:15. What want of moral honesty! Read 1 Tim. 2:2. We are commanded to live in all godliness and honesty; this is acceptable in the sight of God, and he will not accept anything else.

Again we read, “In ourselves there is much dullness and laziness.” 2 Pet. 3:14. We must be diIigent, industrious, that we be found of him in peace. “We have a base, man-pleasing temper, so that we let people perish rather than lose their love; we let them go quietly to hell, lest we should offend them. We know not how to begin, and blush to contradict the devil. O brethren! if we could but set this work on foot in all our societies, and prosecute it zealously, what glory would redound to God! If the common lukewarmness were banished, and every shop and every house busied in speaking of the word and works of God, surely God would dwell in our habitations and make us his delight. And this is absolutely necessary to the welfare of our people, some of whom neither repent nor believe to this day. Look around and see how many of them are still in apparent danger of damnation.”

So much for the acknowledgement from the daughter of Babylon. It is high time that poor deluded souls that have been bound down by such an anti-christ power were waking up to the realization of their awful doom, that they may shake off the shackles of Satan, the stupor and laziness of sectism and get saved by power divine and receive a place in the building of God as lively (not lazy) stones. How true that the sectarian preachers do sacrifice to their ungodly creed, and burn incense unto their dragnet of deception, speaking lies in hypocrisy, not telling the truth, and seeing millions of souls going quietly to hell without warning, for they are dumb and cannot bark. O ye sectish priest! a horrible doom awaits you at the consummation of time, when you are arraigned before the throne of almighty God, and the piercing screams of the damned and lost meet your ears; then you must acknowledge, as you do here, that they have been cast into the infernal regions because you were ignorant, unholy and lazy, and did not give them warning, and their blood rests upon your head. Eze. 3:18-21.

Hear the lamentation going up for Babylon: “O brethren! if we could but set this work on foot in our societies.” In Rev. 18:21, As the angel cast the great millstone into the sea, so God has cast Babylon down, and says she shall no more be found, she will no more get on her feet, and those who labor for the purpose of setting her up, labor in vain. Jer. 51:58. She has fallen, and will not be healed, and God’s people are coming out of her. Rev. 18:1-5. The merchants [preachers, sect builders] shall weep and mourn over her, for no man buyeth their merchandise any more; God’s people cease joining dead creeds. O ye Babylonians! why will you clamor for and defend an ungodly institution that is a harlot, has no husband, is no bride, and yet she has many children (joiners)? And ye yourselves tell us that many of these children have never repented or believed the gospel. Not being born of God, they then are bastards, children of an harlot. You say look around and see how many of your members are in apparent danger of damnation. God’s people are aware of these facts, and when we preach the Word that calls people out of such institutions and from such preachers, that are sending souls to destruction and to the regions of the damned, why do ye howl and fight against the truth, against God’s church that has no sinners in it? It is not indolent, but diligent, increasing with the increase of God. Nor is it ashamed to contradict the devil and expose all his works. Praise the Lord!

May God bless every honest soul that may read these few words; and if still in sectism, come out at once, before you perish in her doom. Repent, believe the gospel, be born of God, then you will be in his family, or church. For he says, And of Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her: and the Highest himself shall establish her; the Lord shall count when he writeth up the people, that this man was born there. Psa. 87:5, 6. O hallelujah to the Lamb now and evermore! Amen.

Dear Beloved Trumpet Readers: I feel that it is my duty to write my testimony. Glory to God for a complete victory in my soul! I had been a member in the M. E. sect for five or six years; but a brother held a meeting here last September and I got more light, and was glad to accept it. Glory to God for his mercy on me! Father and mother are on this highway of holiness. I have four brothers who have reached the age of accountability; I want the prayers of all the saints for them that they may turn to the Lord. I do pray that God will lead some true minister here to proclaim his truth. Pray for me. Your sister in Christ,

Elva Jarvis.

Dear Saints: I do praise God for salvation and the healing of my body. On the 22d of Jan. I was at Bro. Frank Fleenor’s at a meeting that was being held at that place. On Sunday night I testified to the healing power of God, how at different times I had called on God when the children were sick and God had healed them; that we had never had a doctor or gone for medicine since I had been saved. Praise God! He is our doctor. It seemed as though the devil did not like tor me to testify this way. On Monday morning I wanted to go into the parlor, but made a mistake and opened the cellar door, never looked, but stepped into the cellar. I fell some eight or nine feet and was badly hurt. As soon as I struck the brick floor I saw it was a trick of the devil. I praised God, got up, walked up out of the cellar. I felt I was hurt inwardly, the corner of the step striking me in the side; also my foot was badly hurt in the ankle joint. Soon I felt very sick, and began to chill; the little ones prayed for me and I soon felt as though I could go to meeting. So I went; I did not suffer any pain during services. When meeting closed I testified God had healed me, but after meeting my foot began to pain. I went to bed and the pain was so severe I could not sleep. I prayed for relief, and rebuked the devil. Sometimes the pain would leave and I would sleep. I felt the powers of darkness were great, but I knew God’s word was true, that I could claim his promise. Told the devil he could not move me, I would trust God. So on Tuesday I went in a buggy to Crothersville, five miles, where Bro. Edgar Fleenor and Sister Fink were going to hold meeting. My foot was swollen so I could not wear my shoe; was black on the bottom of my foot and around the joint where the blood lad settled. I could not walk; I had to be carried to the buggy. So the brethren made me some crutches; just after they made them Sister Fink came in and said she did not think it would be to the glory of God for me to walk on crutches, that they would anoint the foot and have prayer; they did so, and as soon as my foot was anointed I felt the healing power go through my foot. I got up, began to walk the floor and praise God. That night I walked three squares to meeting. I praise God for this; I do praise him that I can use my foot as well as ever. Yours saved,

Emma George.

To all the Beloved Family of God, Greeting: I am glad and thankful in my soul for a complete salvation which does just lead me out of every crooked and false way the enemy of God and our souls has raised up in this world, and telling the people is religion. Praise our God! Our God has but one shepherd, that good shepherd, bless his dear name! He just moves on before and the blessed and redeemed just follow, for we know whom we serve. Oh! it often makes me so sad to see so many dear precious souls that think they are God’s children and have let Satan deceive them. Oh! I pray God that they may wake up out of this deep sleep of Satan. God has but one church, and we are all one body in Christ Jesus, both in heaven and on earth. And the dear Recorder keeps the record up at home, for he is pure and his people are pure and holy, for they are partakers of his divine nature. Oh! may our God show the people that sin cannot get into the church of the living God; for it is without spot and blameless. Oh dear ones, don’t forget that God has a few of his own down in sectism he is calling for. When I was first saved I stood right on the word of God, and oh how blessed and sweet! No tongue can tell my joy and comfort. But in about one and one-half months the tempter came in so many ways, even through some of my own kin folks, professors of holiness and sanctification, but in the M. E. sect. And I would reason but did not know Satan had a trap set for my soul. So finally the trial came. For about three or four days something like a dark cloud came over me. I would just pray to God, poor creature I was! Thought Jesus wanted me to do something and would not make it plain to me. Well after I thought of everything else, finally the sect and the sect Sunday school came up before me, which I had quit attending after I got saved. But when it came up I felt the cloud passing away, so I supposed it to be the Lord. I just praised the Lord from the bottom of my heart, and said, Lord I thank you for I thought it was your will for me to stay away, but I am glad you have shown me, and I will go back to them again. Then a bright light shown around me. Oh how happy I was!

Now dear saints, you see the devil transfigured himself into an angel of light and deceived my soul. So dear ones, let us have love and longsuffering for them. Oh I just do know from the way I feel that Jesus wants this for some poor hungry soul down in Babylon and sectism. But now glory, honor and peace fills my soul to think that the Lord is so good to them who are honestly deceived, who think they are God’s children, and sends his flying messengers to tell of the true church which is of heavenly origin. I tell you it pays to live for God and be true to souls. When the dear Lord sent Bro. Geo. Cole and Sister Mary Cole and Sister Lodema Kaser here about one year ago, my wife and I went every night to hear them. I listened close. After a few sermons I told my neighbors and my wife I believed I could see a light around their heads, and I just believed there was more of God in them than any body I ever saw. So the blessed Lord used them in laying on hands on me to drive out the antichrist spirit which had taken possession of my poor soul, and fit me to be able to believe God’s word. Praise his name! Now you whom God has called to preach the everlasting gospel, always remember there are some honest, but deceived. It does me so much good to read of the dear ones from so many places telling of the salvation of precious souls. But Satan is raging too, and let all of us live with a perfect trust and confidence in Jesus. I am truly glad and thankful for a satisfying portion in Jesus. Bless the Lord! We are both trusting God to all we know. The blessed Savior gives us faith in him for our sickness and our children’s. He always comes to our help, for we love him and keep his commandments, and we claim the promises. May God bless and keep you all sweet within. Pray for us. Saved and sanctified for God’s use,

W. C. Bonine.
