The Church.

_____

The temple of the living God
In beauty doth arise,
The corner-stone, laid in his blood,
Is Christ, our sacrifice.

And living stones are built thereon;
Saints of one heart and soul;
The key-stone of the arch is Christ,
His blood cements the whole.

One Lord, our head, one Savior, church,
One body of the Lord;
One vine with perfect brandies too,
Is Christ the living word.

__________

KINGDOM OF GOD.

_____

AND this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.” — Matt. 24:14.

There is a variety of opinions extant in the world to day concerning the kingdom of God. A large number of the people contend that it is yet to be set up. Among those that teach this doctrine are the Adventists and Millennialists. The latter teach that Christ will reign on earth one thousand years. That during this thousand years, those who here reject salvation, together with the heathen, will have a chance to be saved. Oh, may God help people to awaken out of such deceptions of the devil! God’s word says to those in this age (gospel age), when the gospel of the kingdom is preached in all the world for a witness to the nations, then shall the end come. The end of what? The end of time; the end of man’s probation. And the poor deluded souls, who expect the kingdom of God to be set up in another age following the present, where they will have another chance to be saved, will wake up to the fact that their priceless souls are lost in the woes of eternal hell.

We will now notice the nature of this kingdom and its location. Jesus says, My kingdom is not of this world. — Jno. 18:36. And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said; The kingdom of God cometh not with observation; neither shall they say, Lo here, or lo there! for behold the kingdom of God is within you. — Luke 17:20, 21. [For lo, the reign of God is within you. YOUNG’S TRANS.] Praise God, this kingdom is not literal, as some suppose, but it is Christ ruling and reigning in the hearts of his people. We press into the kingdom here, and find that it is righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. — Rom. 14:17.

When was it set up? In Dan. 2:1, we read that Nebuchadnezzar dreamed a dream; which was afterward made known to him by Daniel the prophet. In the dream he saw a great image. This image’s head was of fine gold, his breast and arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, his legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. — Dan. 2:31- 33. This image represented four great empires which have arisen out of the earth. The head of gold represented the Babylonian empire [Dan. 2:38], which arose 2300 years B. C. and fell 538 years B. C. The breast and arms of silver represented the Medo-Persian empire [Dan. 2:39], which conquered the Babylonian empire [Dan. 5:31], and fell 286 B. C. The belly and thighs of brass represented the Grecian empire, which arose 776 years B. C. and fell 146 years B. C. The legs of iron represented the Roman empire, which arose 754 years B. C. and fell A. D. 476. These same four empires were afterwards shown to Daniel in a vision, which is recorded in the seventh chapter of Daniel. He saw them as four beasts rising out of the sea. — Dan. 7:3-7. These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, [kingdoms, namely, Babylon, Medo-Persian, Grecian and Roman] which shall arise out of the earth. Dan. 7:17. And in the days of these kings [kingdoms] shall the God of heaven set up his kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. — Dan. 2:44. It was when Rome the fourth of the above kingdoms was in the height of her power and Augustus Caesar was monarch of the world, and ruled over three hundred million people, that Jesus Christ appeared here among men and established the kingdom of God. And before it all the power of the Caesars dwindled into insignificance. Yea before his name all others faded away. Praise God! While blind guides are teaching that the kingdom of God is yet to be set up, the word declares it already set up over eighteen hundred years ago. And we have entered in and received this kingdom, which cannot be moved. — Heb. 12:28. Now let us turn to some plain New Testament scriptures to bear this out. After that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. And saying, the time is fulfilled, the kingdom of God is at hand: repent and believe the gospel. — Mark 1:14, 15. The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. — Luke 16:16. And behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David. And he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end. — Luke 1:31-33.

All these scriptures with many others harmonize in teaching that the the kingdom of God is already set up. When Christ appeared on earth the time was fulfilled; the kingdom of God was at hand, and men pressed into it. How could men press into a kingdom that was not yet set up? Shame on such misconstruing God’s holy word to deceive souls. These modern “presence” and “kingdom come” theories advocated by Russel and others, are without foundation in the word of God. People had better “repent and believe the gospel” of Christ, than be led away with their chaffy stuff, and be lost eternally. Let us next notice the manner in which it was set up.

MORNING LIGHT. ISA. 21:11, 12.

Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out of the mountains without hands [which was not in hands. Mar. which smote the image upon his feet that were of clay, and break them to pieces. * * * And the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. — Dan. 2:34, 35. The above stone is the kingdom of God. It never came with human hands. It is a divine institution. It was built by Christ himself. Matt. 16:18. It descended from God out of heaven. Rev. 21:9, 10. Is undivided. Col. 2:2. It began with the preaching of John the Baptist, was fully set up on the day of Pentecost [1 Cor. 12:16-18], and has become a great mountain which is filling the whole earth. Isaiah the prophet says concerning it, for unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even forever.” — Isa. 9:6, 7.

I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days [Jesus Christ] did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like a fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him. — Dan. 7:9, 10. When Christ became seated on this blazing throne of fire [holiness, Psa. 47:8], all other kingdoms melted away. Satan’s kingdom trembled when Christ began to sway the scepter of his kingdom. He gave his saints who reign in this kingdom, power over all the power of the enemy. Such power that even the devils were subject unto them. This caused Satan’s kingdom to fall like lightning from heaven. See Luke 10:17-20. And the kingdom, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him. — Dan. 7:27. We now receive this kingdom and reign here. “Fear not little flock; for it is the Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” — Luke 12:32. “But the saints of the Most High shall take the kingdom and possess it forever, even forever and ever.” — Dan. 7:18. “And hast made us kings and priests: and we shall reign on earth.” — Rev. 5:10. False teachers say that in the age following the present, literally resurrected saints will reign on earth one thousand years. Nothing of the kind is hinted at. We now possess the kingdom and reign here in the present dispensation of divine grace. For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one: much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. — Rom. 5:17. Yea, he hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. — Eph. 2:3. Read also 1 Cor. 4:8. The Revelator thus describes the kingdom of God. And I saw, and behold, a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. — Rev. 6:2. In the morning of the dispensation day, the kingdom of God prevailed. But from a very early date the power of Rome under the Pagan religion waged a cruel persecution against the children of God, and martyred great numbers of them from off the face of the earth. This, the Revelator describes thus: “And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon, to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given him a great sword. — Rev. 6:4. The moon (God’s church) was then turned into blood. See Matt. 24:29. Joel 2:31. The apostasy 2 Thess. 2:3-8. 2 Peter 2:1, 2. But amidst all this persecution which continued to A. D. 260, the saints of God retained in the main their power and unity until about 270 A. D. Then began the dark night of Roman Catholicism [Amos 8:9; Micah 3:6. Rev. 13:1-8.] which extended to A. D. 1530. “And I beheld, and lo a slack horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.” — Rev. 6:5. Following this dark night came the cloudy day of Protestant sectism (Zech. 14:6, 7; Eze. 34:12. Rev. 13:11-16, 18.), extending to A. D. 1880.

EVENING LIGHT, ZECH. 14:7.

“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood, and his name is called the Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven [God’s pure church], followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen [righteousness], white and clean, and out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword [pure word being preached Eph. 6:17], that with it he should smite the nations; and he shall rule them with a rod of iron, and he treadeth the wine press of the fierceness and wrath of almighty God, and he hath on his vesture, and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS, — Rev. 19:11-16. Praise God, the kingdom of God again prevails. The same white horse that went forth in the morning light again appears, and is going forth with fury against the kingdoms of darkness. Yea, with fire, and his chariots like a whirlwind, rendering his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.” — Isa. 66:15. As this mighty army of saints all arrayed in white, with swords of destruction in their hands, advances, following the King of kings, and Lord of lords, who is seated on his throne of fire (holiness) Satan’s kingdom is put to rout and again falls like lightning. Amen! Victory! Victory! Let all the saints of God shout victory, for we triumph through Christ our Lord. And there was war in heaven [ecclesiastical]: Michael [the Lord Jesus] and his angels [messengers] fought against the dragon [devil]; and the dragon fought and his angels [messengers], and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven [God’s pure church.] And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceived the whole world: he was cast out into the earth [sinful and deceived world], and his angels were cast out with him. Rev. 12:7-9. Here we see the seperation spoken of in Matt. 13:37-43. 49, 50, and also the cleansing of the sanctuary, which is now taking place. God’s kingdom triumphs. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven [God’s pure church], Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, * * *. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony. Rev. 12:10, 11. And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark and over the number of his name, stand upon the sea of glass [pure word of God], having the harps of God. Rev. 5:2. The bride is now making herself ready. This gospel will soon have reached every nation. “Then cometh the end” of time, the end of salvation. Soon the healing thunders of eternal judgment will ring in the ears of all men, and the millions who are sleeping in carnal security, dreaming of another “age to come” when the kingdom of God will be set up, and they will be saved, will suddenly be awakened, horror struck to see the rending heavens reveal the Son of man coming to judge the world. “Then will all enemies [sinners] be put under his feet,” by their resurrection to damnation. “The last enemy destroyed will be death.” The righteous will enter into their eternal home, and the door of the kingdom will be forever closed. All who here reject salvation will be left in “outer darkness,” eternal punishment, where there will be “weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Then will Christ deliver up the kingdom to God, even the Father, “that God may be all and in all.” Even so come Lord Jesus. Amen.

H. M. Riggle.

THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL.

Psa. 119:129.

Poynor, Mo.

Dear Saints oe God: I feel led to write my testimony. I am fully saved, cleansed from all sin, and kept by the mighty power of God. Praise the dear Lord forever! I feel his holy fire running through my whole soul. Well I have been a very wicked man, I was once a professor but not a possessor; I was a great tobacco user and very often used whisky, but praise the Lord he has taken the appetite away, and I don’t desire it and more. Praise the dear Lord that he has saved my soul from an awful hell. I was praying not long ago with all my heart for a real anointing of the Holy Ghost and a mighty sinking down in the love and will of God, and the dear Lord started to answer my prayer, but I was not expecting it to come the way it did. It seemed to bring leanness to my soul, but glory be to God, I kept on trusting in the Lord, I did much praying, and bless the Lord for his tender mercy unto me, that he brought me through it all. They that trust in the Lord shall be as Mt. Zion which cannot be removed, but abideth forever. Ps. 125:1. I ask the prayers of all the saints of God that I may be true and faithful and willing and obedient to do my Master’s will. Your humble brother in Christ,

Albert Lewis.

Dear Family of God: I write to let you know how the Master’s work is progressing in this part of the vineyard. I am happy to report victory over the world, the flesh and the devil. Praise God, who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. The dear Lord has called me into the work to help rescue perishing souls, and the dear Lord wonderfully blesses my soul in delivering his blessed Word. Praise His dear name! I believe there are a few honest souls in Babylon, who are willing to come out. I have been saved about five months. The Lord showed me when I was first saved that he wanted me to preach, but it seemed that I just could not obey. I kept battling with the devil and praying until I got victory over him: and I am just moving out and getting into the harness. I praise God for a pleasure that the world cannot give nor take away. I feel that I am to get out from home and work, but owing to financial circumstances, I can’t leave just now; so I am going to do what I can around home until Father opens up the way or me to move out. I am just looking to him to clear up the way, and five me a co-laborer; because I don’t believe it is God’s will for me to work alone, for I am so young; I am only twenty years old. I would be glad if some brother would come to my assistance. Brother Ostis Wilson and wife held a meeting with us a few ago. Dear saints, pray much for me, and the work at this place. Your saved brother,

Robt. L. Farquar.

__________

Dear Saints of God: I have been reading the GOSPEL TRUMPET, the first one I ever saw. I have been a great sufferer for about six years, being confined to my bed for weeks at a time. For the last three years I have taken a great deal of medicine without effecting a cure, until about three weeks ago when I was anointed in the name of the Lord, by one of his saints. I cannot tell you her name for I have forgotten it. Since then I have taken no medicine. Am trusting entirely in Jesus. I believe the work of healing is begun. I am so much better. I desire the prayers of all the saints that I may be entirely healed. Also that my faith may be strengthened and that I may be made just what God would have me to be.

From one of your most unworthy sisters.

A company of workers are wanted to go to West Plains, Howel Co., Mo., and take charge of a tabernacle and use it in that country. The same will be furnished by Sister S. M. Johnson, West Plains, Mo. A good chance for faithful workers.

Bro. Samuel Powel writes, “The people at Hill City, Venango Co., Pa., desire a camp meeting. A pleasant grove is offered, and the people, offer to prepare the same. I think there can be a good work done there.”

Could not we have a sanctified brother to come to this distant land to preach the pure gospel to the people? We do so much desire it. We believe that God has a remnant in this land. May the dear Lord direct and send whom he will. Yours cleansed in the precious blood of the Lamb,

Mrs. Caroline Street,

Cedarville, Cal.

We would like to have some of God’s ministers stop and see us. We live eleven miles from the post office.

Mrs. Mary Meyer.

Coleridge, Cedar Co., Neb.

Brother S. Y. Greenawalt, of Brushy Prairie, Lagrange Co., Ind., desires some one to come there and hold a grove meeting, beginning about Aug. 17. Who will say, Lord send me!

May the Lord direct some of his ministers here to hold a tent meeting, as there are a few here who are real anxious to hear the gospel preached in its purity.

George W. Cole,

El Dorado, Butler Co., Kan.

A Tabernacle meeting is desired in Aug. near Sharon school-house. Who will come? For further information, address, Jacob Hall, Vandalia, Ill.

A Tabernacle meeting is desired at Wilkinsburg, Pa., about six miles from the centre of the city of Pittsburg, to begin July 18, lasting over two Sabbaths. Let any of the brethren who have a tabernacle near this place and feel the Lore calling them this way, write to me for information and particulars, let also all workers and those who are so situated that they can come, communicate with us. Further notice will be given later, the Lord willing. Your brother in Christ,

James S. McCreary.

East End Post Office, Pittsburg, Pa.

Dayton, O., 20 N. June St.

Dear Saints of God: I have been praying God to open the way for him to send some of his holy men here to preach, and I feel the time is nearing. I feel led to write and ask if there is not some one that will answer their call. There is much work to be done here. What few are here are doing all they feel led to do, in the name of the Lord. Now brethren pray over this and whomsoever God calls, answer the call, some one or more that is full of the power of God and with the Spirit and with fire. We need firebrands here in Dayton. Now I pray as many as God calls will come. God has healed myself and daughter. It is wonderful what God will do for those who will trust him. Praise his name forever! Your saved sister, kept by the power of God,

Anna Kendig.

A camp meeting is desired at Kensington, Smith Co., Kan. Crops have failed and times hard, but it is believed that men will learn righteousness when God’s judgments are in the earth, It is desired that the congregations of God in the surrounding country co-operate in bearing expenses. Let the elder call attention to the matter and all work together. Let some self sacrificing minister set the time as the Lord may lead and let the work go forward. Amen. Address Bro. D. J. C. Thayer.

Devil’s Lake, Ramsey Co., N. D.

Dear Beloved Saints of the Living God: I feel led to write and ask if some ministers of God could not come here and preach full salvation and divine healing. We have had divine healing preached here, but there has never been any one to preach the second work of grace or sanctification. There are a few Christians here in the vicinity of Devil’s Lake, who speak the Norwegian language, but some of them can talk and understand English. We have been going together to pray and read the Word of God, but some think it is not sin to use tobacco, some think it is right to baptize small children, others, that we should join a sect, and some again do not believe in divine healing, and some want to keep the seventh day, etc. Near the first of July would be the best time to come. Yours in Christ,

George Miller.

We would say to the many who have been urgently calling for our labors, east, west, north and south, that we have found it necessary, and the will of God to discontinue constant labors in the field. It has been very hard for us to keep from running everywhere to feed the hungry. But for nearly three years we have been warned of God, that we must cease to tax so heavily this frail body. The care and labor of meetings, along with efforts to do the writing the Lord has called us to do, has proved too much. Therefore, at least for a year or more, we feel it the will of God that we remain at home most of our time. We expect to attend camp meeting at St. Louis, Mich., Beaver Dam and Floyds Knobs, Ind. We ask an interest in the prayers of all the dear saints.

__________

Since the close of the camp meeting Bro. and Sister Michels have gone to Barron, Wis. to work for the Lord in a camp meeting, and during their absence the Lord has chosen Sister Georgia Cook and Sister Nora Siens to take charge of the children and give them the necessary training and spiritual instruction, and do general missionary work on the camp ground. We truly feel that God has called them to this work and will use them to his glory in the training of the children. For over two years Sister Cook has had charge of the kitchen work at the Trumpet office, and while we miss her in that capacity we pray God to bless her in her new line of work and responsibilities. Their work will relieve Bro. and Sister Michels of quite a responsibility and enable them to be out in the gospel work much of the time.

QUESTION.

A brother asks, “If persons draw off from the body of Christ and attend meeting with a sect, if they should return, should we receive them as saints, or should we look upon them as sinners?” Should they be held to make confession; and renounce the sect before we receive them

Ans. Receive everybody in all circumstances under which God receives them. Fellowship everybody with whom fellowship exists in the Spirit of God. If a person has the fruits of a real Christian, treat him as such. If he is not in Christ, let him be unto thee as a heathen man and a sinner. No person who discerns the body of Christ can go off and worship and fellowship with any sect, and not lose salvation. Almost invariably the grace of God has been lost out of the heart before they took such steps. But there are sincere hearts who see the way of truth to some extent, but do not discriminate clearly between God’s church and men’s folds of confusion, and such may, under some circumstances, join in with sectism, and not utterly backslide. Hence we should know and deal with all men according to their real condition, and not so much by what they have done. All who lose salvation must repent and confess, no matter how they lost it.

OUT OF SECT BUT IN THE CHURCH.

_____

To God’s Saints Everywhere, Greeting: It is said, “Wise men change their minds; fools never change.” Pharaoh was a fool and went under, Jonah changed his mind and got out of the whale’s stomach. This is an age of intense religious thought. What is it to be a Christian? is the question of to day. To one. it is to believe in God and have some religious principles. To another it is to be unreservedly given up and lost in God. Between these two extremes, there is every form of belief. The writer has been a loyal Methodist from boyhood. The Wesleys said, “God then thrust us out to spread scriptural holiness over these lands.” The mission of these godly men was eminently successful. Humble honest men in Methodism have been a power for good, and since the days of the reformation, no denomination has achieved more for God and humanity. The writer owes much to that organization. Whatever I am, and whatever I have been saved from, I owe largely, under God, to early religious instructions received in the Methodist denomination. It is therefore with feelings of sadness, that a sense of duty compels me to leave her forever.

For some time past, the light has been gradually dawning on my mind that she was departing from the „faith once delivered to the saints,” and also, from the doctrines of the Wesleys, the founders of that sect. For instance, the doctrine of holiness or sanctification is a Bible doctrine, taught and enjoyed by the early Methodists and embodied in their discipline, as one of its cardinal doctrines, and yet, how few Methodist preachers make a point of preaching this doctrine at stated times to their congregations. How very few of the millions of methodists believe this doctrine or enjoy its blessings. Then again, the “church frolics,” “Martha Washington tea parties,” “lots of fun, everybody invited, admission fifteen cents,” the “grab bag” scheme, the “Post Office dodge,” the “auction swindle,” the “church progression Eucher Club,” the “Whittier Society,” on Sunday for the young people, the “Parliamentary Society, Cushing’s Manual” on Sunday, Pastor presiding, the “Oyster Soup Social,” (minus the oysters), “for the support of the gospel as it is preached among you.” These and other things of like character practiced in the church have caused me to think, Did Jesus, either by precept or example, teach any of these methods of raising money for the support of the gospel? Imagine if you can, the apostle Paul in Rome, in white cap and apron, dishing out oyster soup to the heathen Romans at fifteen cents a dish “for the support of the gospel as preached among you.” Then the doctrine of divine healing is ignored, and the people are taught that the days of miracles are past, and yet God is every day performing miracles of healing when all human help has failed. As did the Pharisees, when Christ was among them in person, so do the modern sects deny the miracles which God is performing among them to day. If the age of miracles is past, it is because the faith of miracles is past. Then I have learned that when a soul is born again, that soul is already in the church. He came in through the only door, which is Christ. Yet the young convert is exhorted to unite with the church “on probation,” give the minister his hand and give his assent to the creed, which is to him not understood, have his name on the class-book, and then he is in the church. It is a lie. Christ is the door and not the sect preacher. The writer has resigned his position as a class-leader in the Methodist sect, and requested the Pastor to drop his name from the church record, and yet he firmly believes he is in the church. Knows it. Out of sectism, but in Christ, abiding in him. Your brother in Christ,

Charles Ellison.

Fresno, Cal., June 21, 1894.

Greeting to all the Beloved of God: May God bless you all with an abundance of grace. I am truly happy to report salvation through the blood of Jesus, and victory over all the power of the enemy. Oh how it does rejoice my soul to know that I am one of God’s children. I began meeting at the Elder school house in the foot hills in Tulare Co., on the 3d of this month, in the name of the Lord. Almost every day souls were born into the kingdom of our God. The meeting closed on Thursday night, June 14, with some gloriously saved and sanctified. To God the Father be all the glory. There were several brought out of the Campbellite sect, who had been members for a number of years, and had never tasted of the sweetness of redeeming grace. Oh, the darkness of sect confusion! Beloved saints, let us do all we can by the help of almighty God, to obliterate the darkness of Babylonian confusion, and so hold up the light of God’s eternal truth, that blinded, benighted souls may see the danger of sectism, and be drawn to the cross of Christ. Oh, may God help all his little ones to stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. I earnestly ask an interest in all your prayers, that I may ever be kept by the power of God, and that God may ever use me to his glory. The Lord willing, I will begin another meeting at the Townsend school house, about three miles from where I held the last meeting, on Sunday, June 24, to continue as long as the Lord wills. Anyone wishing to correspond with me, will please address me at Fresno City, Cal. Your brother, in the one body, separated unto the pure” gospel of God,

E. B. Elam.

Hollenberg, Kan., June 27, 1894.

Dear Trumpet Readers: It has been some time since we reported the work of the Lord in these parts of the vineyard. We received a call from Edgar, Neb., the first of May, and we began the battle on the 10th, in the name of the Lord Jesus. God wonderfully witnessing to his Word and sending it forth in its purity, and with power. It was a wonderful seed sowing time. After holding about two weeks at the Randall school- house, with two conversions, we went about six miles north east, to the Illinois school-house where we laid down the truth in the name of Jesus. Although the devil tried to get us to compromise and promise not to say anything about the churches we stood firm on the Word, and gave them the assurance that we would let the Lord lead, and preach nothing but the Word. But they could not measure up to Bible repentance, and as the word was laid down they saw their condition, but none ventured out. After holding here for about ten days we went to Grove Chapel and held over Sunday and then came back to Brother Smith’s and held meeting Tuesday night, when four more precious souls found the Lord and were saved, making seven saved in all, and three or four consecrations for sanctification. The next day we drove twelve miles to the river and five dear souls were buried with Christ by baptism. We assembled again at night and observered the ordinances of God’s house. We felt impressed to go west with Brother and Sister Randolph, and after inquiring of the Lord, we all felt that the Lord wanted us to go by wagon, whereupon we returned to Hollenberg and the Lord has thus far furnished us with team and harness and various other things that are necessary for the journey, for which we give him the glory, and still trust him for the rest, which we believe will soon be supplied. The Lord willing we will write again in regard to this trip. The Lord wonderfully blessed us last Sabbath evening in an ordinance meeting at the the Moorehead school-house, where there were about thirty-one saints that took part. Brother and Sister Philips were with us and other saints from Reynolds and several other places. Five souls were saved and the work is moving on with victory on the Lord’s side. The Lord has also wonderfully manifested his healing power here. Pray much for us and the work here. Yours saved and all consecrated for the salvation of souls.

Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: The Lord bless you all. We have just closed a meeting near Independence, La. The Lord was with us in great power. Dear Brother Jake Hoover and wife were with us through the meeting. He is indeed an earnest child of God, he has been for years a Baptist preacher but feeling that the time had come when he must step out. He obeyed his Master’s call to escape from them who live in error. 2 Peter 2:18, and follow them who call upon God out of a pure heart. 2 Tim. 2:22. May God ever bless him and help him to deliver many precious souls. Well we met some opposition at first around Independence, but the Lord gave us victory and fourteen precious souls were delivered from Babylon, among whom was a Campbellite preacher, and we feel sure the Lord did wonderfully deliver him, for we found him a real honest soul, hungering after righteousness, and seeking the whole truth. May God ever use him to his glory, as he says he feels that the Lord demands his service. Pray for him. We had the pleasure of meeting dear Brother J. J. Goss, of Amite City, who has been one of the leading physicians of our country and for several years a preacher in the Missionary Baptist. He was delivered from his sect, and embraced the whole truth during our meeting in his city, in early spring. Pray for us.

Your brother in Christ,

Dear Beloved Saints: I have felt like writing my testimony for the Trumpet. I want to say to the glory of God, I am saved and sanctified as a second definite work of grace that is wrought by the Holy Ghost in my soul. It is a salvation that saves from all sin and keeps me all the time, walking in the narrow way. Praise God! I am trusting God all the time. I find it is so safe to take God at his word. It is so sweet to know that God is pleased with us. Praise God for salvation full and complete! He keeps me in perfect health all the time. He is my physician. I give him all the glory.

Dear Saints of God: My testimony is that I am saved from all sin, with victory in my soul. I am satisfied with Jesus who is so precious to me. Truly, I find Him my all in all. Though weak in body, yet I can say with Paul: “Though the outward man perish the inward man is renewed day by day.” Praise the Lord! Dear ones remember me in your prayers, and let us be faithful unto death. This mortal life will soon be o’er, and it matters not what our trials and conflicts are; all that we can endure here in this life for Jesus’ sake, will seem like nothing when we get to the end of the way. Love to all God’s little ones. Yours in Jesus,

SOWING PRECIOUS SEED.

_____

“HE that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” — Psa. 126:6.

To every soul who has found that the Lord is gracious; who has been translated from the kingdom of darkness into the glorious kingdom of God’s dear Son, comes a fervent desire to bear precious seed for God; a desire to be a profitable servant unto him who so gently and lovingly wrought upon the heart of stone until it becomes a heart of flesh, and who bestows constantly a “sweet river of peace” to the soul that was once destitute of peace. Oh! the wondrous power of the great God who turns darkness into light, and giveth the “oil of joy for mourning, and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.” Glory and honor, majesty and power, be unto his excellent name forever and ever! As we look around us on every side and behold the barrenness and desolation, and hear the cry, “Come and help us,” from poor souls who are suffering from the famine that is in the land, we are made to wish for a “thousand tongues to sing our great Redeemer’s praise,” a thousand lives to devote to the blessed cause of Christ. Yea, we have a fervent desire to suffer, sacrifice, and endure hardness for his sake. How blessed to be called “trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified;” to “take root downward and bear fruit upward,” being planted by the rivers of water, receiving strength and nourishment from the Rock, living, growing, thriving and increasing with the increase of God. Thus God prepares us to be watchmen upon the walls of Zion “which shall never hold their peace day nor night, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth.” Praise our God!

Our dear Father does not leave us alone to labor and toil amid the heat of the day, but “we are laborers together with God.” His presence encourages and strengthens us for every conflict and makes us to be “neither barren nor unfruitful” in his love. He waters our souls with the dews of heaven, maketh “peace in our borders” and fills us with the “finest of the wheat,” thus preparing us to “sow beside all waters.” As we go forth into the field to sow seed and labor for him whom we so dearly love, our souls are often burdened to behold encouraging results of our labor, as though we are responsible for the results of the good seed sown. God’s word says: “He that planteth is nothing, neither he that watereth, but God that giveth the increase.”

Let us not be disheartened, but sow bountifully, even though some seed falls by the wayside where the fowls of the air devour them; or upon stony ground where they have no depth of earth and are withered by the scorching rays of the sun; or others are choked by thorns. God has promised to give the increase, and some seed will fall upon good ground and bring forth thirty, sixty and an hundred fold. Let none think, whether at home or abroad, “There is naught that I can do by way of sowing seed for God.” All should remember that

“Serving is but simply living
Through each day as it may run,
Watching, praying, always doing
Each SMALL duty to be done.

’Tis not serving to be grumbling
At your simple, common lot;
Be content where God has placed you,
Serve him THERE and question not.

For what service you should give him
Surely HE can better tell,
And the place to you best suited
Is the place where you must dwell.”

“For he that observeth the wind shall not sow, and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap.” “To him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.” Then let all be of good courage, “fighting manfully the battles of the Lord,” not looking at discouraging circumstances, but looking alone to him who has promised to be with us, even unto the end of the world. “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

“Then go forth, go forth with weeping,
Bearing precious seed;
Time is flying, souls are dying,
He’ll supply thy every need.”

IS THERE ANYTHING IN THE NAME?

_____

“THE name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous runneth into it and is safe.” Prov. 18:10.

How often we hear this expression used, in trying to evade the truth of God’s word on the true church; people will say, “Oh! there isn’t any thing in a name.” But the above quotation shows us that there is protection and salvation in the name of the Lord. We find in Eph. 1:17-23, that the name of Christ is exalted “far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world but also in that which is to come.” And he is the head of the church. And in Acts 4:10-12, we find there is healing in the name of Jesus Christ, and in no other name is there salvation. Now dear friends, we see that we have all in the name of Jesus, and if you are bearing a name in which there isn’t anything, in the name of Jesus renounce it and take upon you the name in which we have salvation, healing and protection, yea, and all things which we need. Oh praise God forever and ever!

Who names God’s people, and what are they named? Read Isa. 62:2. Here we see that the mouth of the Lord shall name them. Now a great many people wonder what the new name is. Some say that it is Christian, because the disciples were first called Christians at Antioch; but they were not called so by God, only by the people. But we can prove by the word of God that it was the name of the Lord. In Rev. 3:12 we read, “Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out; and I will write upon him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.”

Now we wish to show that new Jerusalem is the church of God which is the bride of Christ. Read Rev. 21:1, 2, 9, 10. In Gal. 4:26, “But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.” Now a great many people will say they understand the spiritual church of God, but say, “we must have a home somewhere.” Well we see by the word that Jerusalem which is the church is our mother, and God is the Father of all the faithful; so when we are born of God we come into the family of God and take the family name, just as the little babe that is born immediately takes the father’s name, and it is at home with Father and Mother and is contented. What better home can be found for the young babe than the one provided by the kind father and loving affectionate mother? Yet God says that he is more willing to give good gifts unto us than a father is to his children. Sectarian preachers will try to snatch the newborn babe from the tender embrace of its spiritual mother and put it under the care of a stepmother who has never known a real mother’s love for her children, and indulge them in all sorts of ungodly pleasure, until the burning zeal of the first love has all died out and they are content to nestle on the bosom of their supposed mother, having been lulled to sleep by her ungodly song of “Oh it will be all right in the end!” Oh may God awake those poor blind souls and help them to return to their own home where they will be tenderly cared for by their right parents. We read in Eph. 3:14, 15, that the whole family in heaven and earth are named of God. In Rev. 14:1, John saw an hundred forty and four thousand, having their Father’s name written in their forehead. Read Jer. 14:8, 9. Chapter 33:16, says “In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely; and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The Lord our Righteousness.”

Do God’s true people bear his name? Zech. 10, 12, says “And I will strengthen them in the Lord and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the Lord.” Read Deut. 28:10. Jno. 17:11-13, 20. But they say, “Of course we bear his name, we worship in his name, but that doesn’t make any difference about the name of the church, we don’ t worship the church.” Let us see what the church was called in Paul’s time. 1 Cor. 1:1, 2. Here Paul says, “Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints with all that in every place call upon the name of the Lord, both theirs and ours.” So dear readers, you may see that the church of God includes all of the children of God in every place. Oh what sweet harmony exists where every one is striving to exalt and glorify the one name! No confusion can be had where each one is clinging earnestly to the name of our God for support and protection. Oh praise his name! In Heb. 12:18-23, Paul declares that “we are come unto Mt. Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven.” In 1 Tim. 3:15 Paul speaks of the house of God which is the church of the living God, the pillar and the ground of the truth. Acts 20:28, Feed the church of God which he hath purchased with his own blood. Paul says that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.

Now we have proven by four definite quotations that the church is called by the name of God. Now can we prove that God is displeased when his people are called by different names. Let us see what Paul thought about division and different names. Read 1 Cor. 1:10-13. Here we find Paul reproving the brethren for division and contention, telling them to be of one mind and of the same judgment and all speak the same thing. Verse 12, says “Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.” Verse 13, “Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were you baptized in the name of Paul?” So might we say to day, Was John Wesley crucified for you? or were you baptized in the name of John Wesley? or even John the Baptist? he is not a savior, and God’s true church is not named after any man. Read 1 Cor. 3:1-9. Here Paul declares that they are carnal, “For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, so then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. He that planteth and he that watereth are one; for we are laborers together with God. “Ye are God’s husbandry; ye are God’s building. John 5: 43, says I am come in my Father’s name and ye receive me not. If another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.” So it is to day, when we come to them in the name of God only they will not receive us, but when the false prophets come in bringing some name of blasphemy they will receive them and cry for the god of sectism. Isa. 26:13, says Oh Lord our God, other lords beside thee have had dominion over us; but by thee only will we make mention of thy name. Chapter 63:19, “we are thine; thou never barest rule over them; they were not called by thy name.” Micah 4:5, “For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, but we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever.” Oh bless the name of God! Now what do sectarians think of this scripture? it surely cuts off every name but the name of God. ”he says, thou shalt have no other gods before me.” We see this scripture fulfilled many times where the truth of God’s word reveals their foundation; they begin to tremble and cry out for their god. Truly the world is in darkness. With all their boasted knowledge they cannot discern the right ways of the Lord. Now perhaps you dear readers may know of a kind loving father with enough of this world’s goods to provide plentifully for his children, and who is a respectful God-fearing man which any son might be proud to call father. But suppose one of his sons would change his name and would not be called by his father’s name and would teach his children to bear another name. Would not that father’s heart be grieved? He would surely say “my son is ashamed of his father.” By so doing that son would forfeit all claim upon his father’s property, and all inheritance with him. Do you not think that the great tender heart of God is grieved when his children persist in bearing other names? Let us read Mal. 1:6. “A son honoreth his father, and a servant his master; if I then be a father, where is mine honor? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the Lord of hosts unto you. O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name? So say the priests of to day, Wherein have we displeased the Lord? with the Bible in their hand that condemns them. But they are deceived, for Christ says, Matt. 7:22, “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? Then will I profess unto them, I never knew you; depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” Now our Father in heaven is rich and abundantly able to provide for us at home if we will stay with him and work for him like good obedient children. He has promised to be with us always, even unto the end of the world. Praise God for his blessed promises! we are not afraid to trust him. Oh let us be faithful standard bearers, and never falter until he says, “It is enough, come up higher,” and with all the faithful we will join in that grand family reunion where the family will no longer be separate, but live forever with our Father and our elder brother Christ Jesus, and mingle our voices in praise to the one who hath redeemed us from sin. Your sister in the one family,

Viola Cox.

Dear Saints of God: I want to testify through the TRUMPET of the great mercy and love of God to me. He has been so longsuffering, and has shown such tender compassion towards me. When I was so wayward and had forsaken him, yet he has drawn one back to him by the gentle wooings of his Spirit. Glory to his name! I am now walking after the Spirit, and by his exceeding great and precious promises, I am made a partaker of the divine nature. And to day I have an amen in my soul to all the will of God. On May 20, the blessed Lord healed our boy, age ten years, of neuralgia and other diseases. He has suffered much with neuralgia and has so much pain in his limbs, a doctor was employed in the early part of the spring, but the boy did not receive much benefit. All praises to our Savior and physician who was willing to take all diseases away as soon as I was willing to submit myself and mine entirely into his hands. Glory to his name, he is increasing my faith and settling me down more firm on the rock. Oh I want to understand more of the deep things of God, that I may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height, and to know the love of Christ. I am now justified, and sanctified by faith in the precious blood of Jesus. Your sister in Christ,

Dear Saints of God: I am still praising God for a full and free salvation that saves me from all sin. I do praise the dear Lord that he gave me a true and honest heart that I could see the true light and did accept it. And now I am free from all bands and straps of man, that I can serve the only true and living God. I do know that I have been washed in the blood of the Lamb and made whiter than the snow. Tongue cannot express the joy I have in my soul. I am all sold out for the Lord, and do know that I am on the solid rock Jesus Christ. O hallelujah to the Lamb! I know the dear Lord has fulfilled all his promise to me; he has healed me both soul and body. I have suffered with my head all my life, and I went to the Lord in true and sincere prayer in faith and he healed me instantly. I was converted when I was twelve years old in the M. E. sect. And I lived up to all the light that I had, but very often there was something whispered to me that there was more for me to do. I lived on that way till last fall, I consecrated my all all to the dear Lord. I died to this world and all its fashions. Now I am singing and shouting the praises of my dear Lord that sets my captive soul free. I know I am in the only true church. We would love for some dear brother filled with the Holy Ghost to come here and help us present the truth to the people if it is the Lord’s will. I do love to read the TRUMPET; it is good for my soul. I ask all of the dear saints to pray for me. Also pray for my husband that he may be saved. He has been under conviction several times. Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: I believe it would be to the glory of God for me to write my testimony. I was converted when quite young, lived for God the best I knew how, not knowing that I could live without committing sin, until last winter it pleased the Lord to send Bro’s Kilpatrick and Carter here to preach the word in its purity. I knew I never heard it preached that way before. I knew God answered my prayer by sending them here. I had been praying for wisdom, and when they came and preached the word I got it. Praise his name forever! I am so glad to know I can live without committing sin. I joined the Methodist church; they told me I ought to have a home, but I can truthfully say the Methodist church was no home for me. I never knew what it was to love the brethren until I got saved in this straight way. The reason of that was, I had been professing without any salvation. Pray for me that I may be strong in the Lord. I want to do his will in all things. I have had so much false teaching; pray that it may all be taken out, that I may receive with meekness the engrafted word which is able to save our souls. I found pride to be my most besetting sin. I know the devil hates to hear me say I am saved from it, but I know it is so, and I love to tell it. The Lord hateth a proud look. When I think of that, I do not wonder at the coldness in the sects. I thank God I am saved from sectism, and I know it. I heard a sister say she thought she would have to backslide if she ever joined the Methodist sect again. I told her that I thought that would be about the last place I would slide into. The time past is sufficient for me. Pray for Mamma that she may be strengthened and built up in the most holy faith; also pray for Papa and my brothers and sisters. Pray for the church at Tharp’s Chapel, that the gates of hell may not prevail against it. If Bro. Kilpatrick sees this I would have him know we would like very much to have him visit us again, but the dear Lord knows best whom to send. Yours saved and desiring to be sanctified,

Victoria L. Mooney.
