SPRING

_____

She comes! she comes! the gentle
Spring, With all her princely train,
Her magic wands choice blessings bring
Back to our hearts again.

She comes, she comes! the gentle Spring!
Her swift approach we hear,
And see her bright new life begin,
Her graceful form appear.

Her silv’ry voices, low and sweet,
Enchant the heart and ear,
In ev’ry nook her charms we meet,
Her fragrant breath wafts near.

We feel the touch of her kind hand,
Her kisses pure and soft,
She spreads her em’rald robes o’er land,
Her tresses hang aloft.

O, welcome, welcome lovely Spring!
Thy tender smile we greets
Ten thousand bounties here you bring,
And lay them at our feet.

On ev’ry living shrub and tree,
You fling your verdure down,
These fondly draped yield back to thee,
Bequeathing thee a crown.

Thou’rt lithe and beautiful and fair,
The year’s glad queen, and good,
Bedeck’d with glories rich and rare,
Thy blushing maidenhood.

Thy Maker calls thee forth at will,
Away from southern haunts,
And bids thee His good pleasure fill;
His laws on thee He plants.

O, Spring-tide! — child of peace and love!
From Father’s bosom sent!
We drink thy joys, drawn from above.
And breathe thy life, thus lent

Are You Ready?

_____

“In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.” — Jno. 14:2.

Jesus tells us that he goes to prepare a place for us, but in his word requires us to prepare for the place, or in fact the place is prepared for only those who are prepared for the place. Jesus tells us in Jno. 14:3 that he will come again. Be ye therefore also ready. — Matt. 24:44. There are those who are professing to know Christ, yet teaching that no one may positively know that they will be accepted of Christ when he comes. Would it not be unreasonable even in our Savior to command us to be ready and leave us no means whereby we may know of our readiness? Paul says, “I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. — Acts. 21:13. Read also Acts 20:22—24. There are those however who profess a readiness and are deceived by the enemy of Christ and of souls. A man proclaimed to us, in loud terms, his thorough preparation to meet God, yet indulged in sins of the flesh; but this does not contaminate the soul, for Paul (the man went on to say) said that “with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh, the law of sin.” Rom. 7:25. Peter was mistaken as to his readiness when he said, “Lord I am ready to go with thee, both into prison and to death.” Luke 22:33. God help his saints to understand fully their condition before the great Judge, when they testify to their readiness and willingness to suffer the torture of the flames, if need be, for Jesus’ sake. The Master told Peter he would deny him, and he did, because the principle of the fear of man was in his heart, and some who profess their readiness to be offered up, are yet indulging in the things of the world, ostensibly with the fear of being reproved by the world. Paul was sanctified when he promulgated his readiness to die. Peter was not. Some may say that Paul says that with the flesh he serves the law of sin, after he had been delivered by the Lord Jesus Christ from the “body of this death.” Would it not be inappropriate and obscene speech to testify as he (Paul) does, in verse 23 of Romans seven, to his “captivity to the law of sin, which is in my members,” and then inverses 24, 25, proclaim his freedom from the same, and then again in the next sentence, testify to his servitude to the law of sin? Paul certainly is not given to such mutable language, but says he has the mind of Christ, and his work in the ministry was to the end that the body of Christ be edified, that men and women be brought to the state of perfection and be not carried about with every wind of doctrine. Then certainly he never taught a contrary or changeable doctrine.

May God have mercy on those whose understanding is darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart, and remain blinded for the sake of a few fleshly lusts. The devil has gotton men into the error of being sanctified in soul, but the body or flesh still subject to the law of sin. If we must serve sin with the flesh, then Paul announces the doom of all, when he says to the Galatians, “Now the works of the flesh are these, * * * * and they that do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” Gal. 5:19-21. Yet Paul testifies frequently to his preparation for the place prepared. But they that do such things are not ready. Paul says, The flesh lusteth against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh, and these are contrary the one to the other, so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. Gal. 5:17. The child of God, who is only regenerated, is possessed with those two contrary forces, leading in contrary directions, certainly a wretched state and one in which there is danger of “being tossed to and fro.” But glory to God! Jesus died to condemn sin in the flesh, that the law of righteousness might be fulfilled in those who are not led by the flesh but by the Spirit. Paul, after speaking of being led by the flesh and the Spirit, in verse 18 adds, “But if ye be led of the Spirit.” This certainly implies the possibility of getting rid of, “through Jesus Christ our Lord,” the leadings of the flesh, and being led by the Spirit, and that alone. To have a mind that is controlled continually and only by the Spirit is life and peace. Praise God! it is deliverance from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. But what means Paul by saying he served the law of sin with the flesh, after his deliverance? Mark the words “So then” at the beginning of the sentence in verse 25. He tells of the two natures in this chapter. In verse 24, and first sentence of verse 25, he speaks of his deliverance from the sin that dwelleth in him, and adds, “So then,” not now but “So then,” — when he had the experience of the two contrary natures. “So then” he served the law of sin with the flesh, but now he thanks God for freedom.

A Campbellite preacher said to me, “I use tobacco. I admit it is a sin; it shatters my nerves and diseases my body, but God does not hold me accountable for the sin the flesh commits. By suffering from nervousness and diseased body I pay the penalty of the sin here in this world.”

“The god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not.” “Here is a sort of purgatory. What! know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s — 1 Cor. 6:19, 20. For ye are the temple of the living God, as God hath said, I will dwell in them and walk in them, and I will be their God and they shall be my people. — 2 Cor. 6:16. Know ye not that ye are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy. — 1 Cor. 3:16.

Now may all the readers of Trumpet read the following scriptures and ponder carefully on every word, also use a dictionary: 1 Cor. 6:9, 10; Col. 3:4, 5; Eph. 5:1—6; 2 Tim. 3:1—5; 1 Tim. 1:9, 10; Matt. 25th chapter; Gal. 5:19—21. They that do such things are not ready. There are many scriptures describing a righteous life, or the life of one in a constant state of readiness, but time permits us to give but few now. Col.3:1—4; 1 Jno.3:1, 2; 4:17. Peter before he was sanctified testified to his readiness and was deceived. Let us hear him again after he is sanctified. We join our testimony with his. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead; to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time. — 1 Pet. 1:3—5.

Your humble and saved brother,

Charlie Orr.

__________

A VERT OLD LIE.

THERE is a foolish notion believed by Babylonians, especially those of the older sects, which we wish to lift up our voice against through the Lord’s paper. It is this: that nobody can be saved from all sin in this life. A worse falsehood never emanated from the enemy of souls. The Bible teaches that whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin, Jno. 8:34, and that servants of sin are free from righteousness. Rom. 6:20. Therefore, to believe that nobody can live without sinning, is to believe that all men are free from righteousness. The Bible also teaches that “he that committeth sin is of the devil.” — 1 Jno. 3:8. Hence to believe that all men commit sin, is to believe that all men are of the devil. The Bible further teaches that they who die in their sins cannot enter heaven. Jno 8:21. So if nobody could be made free from sin before they die, nobody could enter heaven. On the other hand, the Bible declares that “whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin.” 1 Jno. 3:9. We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not. — 1 Jno. 5:18. Also the Bible teaches that sins will hide God’s face from the people, so that he will not hear their prayers. Isa. 59:2. Therefore to believe that nobody lives without committing sin is to believe nobody has communion with God, nor can receive answer to their prayers. So you see to believe the anti-christ notion under consideration is to deny all hopes of heaven, and believe all men to be on the broad road to damnation, and in an unredeemable state.

To believe that men can be Christians and live in sin, is universalism; for if God will take one sinner to Heaven, he will take all of them to heaven, for he is no respecter of persons. No man can retain spiritual life in his soul and live in disobedience to God’s commands; for “sin when it is finished [committed]; bringeth forth death.” This, most professors believe to be true concerning the child when he arrives at the age of accountability, but still retain the idea that converted adults can commit sin more or less every day, and remain in favor with God. This cannot be true. A child who dies in the guilt of trespasses and sins, dies as a sinner; and an adult who gets converted, and commits a single sin afterward, becomes a dead sinner that instant. The same causes are bound to produce the same effects everywhere. But where did this wild notion that men can retain spiritual life in disobedience originate? Let us see if we can find the author of it. We will go back to the Garden of Eden. Here we find God telling our first parents if they sin against him they will die the same day. — Gen. 2:17. But soon after we hear the devil contradicting God, by telling them, “Ye shall not surely die.” — Gen. 3:4. God said they could not commit sin and retain spiritual life. The devil said they could. Now we have the origin of this stupid notion. We have traced it to the father of all lies. — Jno. 8:44. The devil introduced this false doctrine through the serpent preacher; but to day he need not stoop so low, having many thousands of human beings who are ready to carry his delusions to the ends of the earth.

God save the deceived.

Your sanctified brother,

Wm. G. Schell.

TESTIMONIES,

Dear Saints: God moves in a mysterious way. My testimony to day is I am hid away with Christ in God, living above this world and its ways. I am standing alone in this place, and know God is able to keep me as long as I put my trust in Him. Pray that I may ever be faithful to my calling.

Dear Brethren: God bless you and keep you from all sin. I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony for my dear Savior. I feel the power of God saving me just now from all sin, and I know all is well, and I am enjoying the sweet rest that all saints enjoy by the Holy Ghost. The blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanseth me from all sin, and the Holy Ghost sanctifies me. Since we moved to this town, we have not as yet been able to be in the work for God but little. We hope the work of God will prosper here, during this year. Pray that the good Lord may guide us and lead us every day by his gentle Spirit.

Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: I feel led to write my testimony. I am saved in Jesus. Oh! I cannot praise God enough for the sweet peace I enjoy in doing his will; it is something the world cannot give nor take away. I count myself naught, only to do my Master’s will. I do not seek a home in the pleasures of this world, but expect to go to the home that the dear Savior has prepared for me. I am determined to live for the one who died on the cross for you and me, that we might be saved. Pray for me.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony for his glory. O I do praise God for sending some one in this neighborhood to preach the gospel, in all its purity. And I do praise God for the healing of my body. I had been afflicted with neuralgia for twenty years, and for three years I had to keep my bed most of the time. But praise the Lord, he has healed me of all my diseases. O I praise the Lord for salvation that saves and keeps me free from all sin. It is nearly a year since I gave my heart to God. Glory be to Jesus! He has taken all the old carnal nature out of me. I ask all the dear saints to pray for me.

Your sister,

White Oaks, New Mexico.

To all the Readers of the Trumpet, Greeting: I now by the grace of God will write my testimony for the first time. I am a youth of seventeen years, and have been in the past life a very wicked and sinful boy, until this glorious salvation came to me. I first knocked at the door, Christ Jesus, in the Y. M. C. A. of Coldwater, Michigan, and there became quite active in the work. I gave my name to the M. E’s on probation. I also became active there. I went to their parties, socials, fairs and so on, but every time I did so I felt a leanness in my soul. Praise God for it. I commenced to search the cause of it, and after awhile I could see that I was swallowed up in something, I knew not what. I began to cry aloud, but one day the General Secratary of the Y. M. C. A. took Clark’s Commentary to explain the passage. I brought to my defense. I became afraid and reasoned in my heart thus, Can men so educated be mis-led? So I thought I was wrong; by the fair speech of the devil, I confessed that I was wrong, and prayed with him, but the Spirit gave me no peace. One evening as I was going home heavy- hearted and afraid and sorrowful, I prayed the Father in Jesus’ name to show me. I took the Bible on my knees, shut my eyes and opened the Bible in Jesus’ name. I put my finger on the page, opened my eyes, and this is what it was: Jer. 1:7. — “Be not afraid of their faces; for I am with you to deliver you.” Oh, how I wept with joy! After that I left Babylon alone. In three or four weeks a young man came into the store where I was working and said there was a fellow wanted to see me; they call themselves saints. Now all this time I had never in my life heard of the saints until that moment. I left my business and went to see him. We had a long talk and after a few months of fear and prowling in the darkness between fear and deep conviction, I was fully justified and then sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Glory to God and the Lamb forever! I am called to preach His everlasting salvation. Pray for me.

DIVINE HEALING
—OF—
SOUL AND BODY.

A New Book,
—by—
E. E. BYRUM.

_____

This book is just fresh from the author’s pen, and a glance at the contents is enough to convince any one of its interest and value to those seeking a more thorough khowledge of the Divine Being, and his dealings with people at the present time, as well as in days past.

The first part of the book very plainly marks out the way from sin unto full salvation, according to the teaching of the sacred word.

It presents the gospel truth in such a way as to throw a gleam of light into the pathway of the sinner, and enable him to see that there is hope beyond, through the mercies of a blessed Redeemer.

The BELIEVER is led to see the beauties of full salvation, and the joys in a life of Christian perfection.

THE HEALING OF THE BODY

constitutes the second part of the book. This consists of twenty-six chapters on doctrinal subjects, exposing and overthrowing false ideas and theories concerning the healing power in these last days, showing when, how, and under what circumstances and conditions God heals the sick and afflicted at the present time.

It gives a history and testimonies of healing from the time of Abraham, through the different ages, up to the present time.

The third part of the book consists of the

WITNESSES OF TO DAY.

These are wonderful testimonies of persons who have been healed within the last few years by divine power; such as being instantly restored to sight after having been blind for years; the lame throw away their crutches; broken bones are instantly healed; invalids who have suffered for years immediately arise and walk, after the prayer of faith is offered, etc. The author is personally acquainted, with nearly all the parties who have herein given their testimonies, and gives their names and addresses in the book, so that persons doubting the truthfulness of the same can write to the parties themselves.

It will be a precious volume to those who are afflicted in either soul or body. The chapters on faith, and also other subjects, will strengthen the faith of the reader, and aid in a closer walk with Him who is the “giver of every good and perfect gift.”

It cotaines 248 good-sized pages; good, plain print, on heavy paper. Neatly bound in cloth, $ .75. Library (half morocco), marble edge, $1.10. Send two cent stamp for special terms to agents. Address,

GRAND JUNCTION CAMP MEETING.

The time of this glorious convocation of the saints of the Most High, unless hereafter changed, will be June 14th to the 22d, 1892. The dear Lord is sending more workers on the ground, and we trust by his blessing, nothing shall be wanting to thoroughly set the ground in order, and furnish all necessary buildings. A good pavillion 40×70 will be erected, filled with comfortable seats. Also boarding and sleeping buildings.

Any one wishing a board tent put up on the ground will please notify Bro. A. B. Palmer at Bangor, Mich, and it will be built as cheap as possible. If any wish to rent tents also let him know. A very large attendance is expected, and it seems to us that the fire of the living God in our soul assures us that it will be the most glorious place, and season of divine power, grace and glory ever witnessed in these last days. Come in the name of Jesus, in the love of God, and in the Spirit of earnest prayer, and so come expecting glorious things from the presence of the Lord. Amen.

THE NEW CAMP GROUND.

Dear Brethren: We are now at work getting the new camp ready for the June camp meeting, one mile north of Grand Junction. We are building a tabernacle 70×40 feet, also a boarding building. We have purchased the shingles and they are on the ground. A portion of the lumber from the buildings on the old camp at Bangor is on the ground. We have also purchased the lumber for the seats, which will be made with backs to them. We expect to get the material on the ground for the well some time this week. Now all this costs time and money; we have already advanced $100. Now as there is a limit to our purse strings, we appeal to you to assist in this work. Send money to me at Bangor, Mich, or to E. E. Byrum, Grand Junction, Mich. We prefer that you send it to Bro. Byrum.

As soon as we get the material on the ground we will let it be known through the Trumpet, and appoint the time to commence work on the buildings, and call for volunteer labor. The blessed Lord is with us in this work.

Yours in Christ,

A. B. Palmer.

THOUGHTS FROM DENVER.

Denver Col., Apr. 28.

Dearly Beloved Saints: God bless you all in Christ Jesus. Bro. Byrum and I arrived here April 22, and were happy to greet the beloved saints. Bro. James Willis and family came with us, with, his tabernacle. Owing to the warm weather we found here in the midst of winter, four years ago, we expected to find everything robed in green. But we were disappointed. At the skirts of the city the ground was still spotted with the remains of a snow storm a few days previous. Grass was more advanced in Michigan. But the weather is now lovely, and nature promises us her springtime beauties soon.

Through exposure in a cold rain at Kenesaw, Neb., I was taken with a bad lung trouble; was quite poorly, had lost about all appetite. But thank God, we held on by faith in him and he raised us up. I was rapidly regaining strength when we left there. But an apparently conjested state of my lungs seemed still to op press my breathing. As the onward lying train carried us higher, and the air consequently became more and more light, the difficulty of breathing increased. I also found myself under a fever; lay one day very weak. O how our poor soul cried out all the day long, for the blessing of health and strength once more to this frail temple, that had been so long crushed down with one affliction after another! But there was searching of the heart, and consecration, as well as prayer. I realized a sweet willingness to suffer on, more and more all the days of my life, and almost more than a willingness to quit the theater of this life, and of this dark world which had pressed so many bitter cups of tribulation to my lips. I did not know, indeed but that I had come here to join that dark train which moves solemnly, and almost constantly out of this city to the large city of the dead, where thousands, who come here to regain health, are furnished a grave instead of health. But these thoughts brought no gloom to my redeemed soul. Three glorious things lit all up bright. First, I knew my soul was all arrays in the pure righteousness of God without spot, and that by the gran of God we had kept the faith, obeyed our God, and done what we could to glorify his holy name on earth. Second “Whether we wake, — remain in the body, — or sleep, — leave this body, — we shall live together with the Lord.” I shall still have a conscious and joyful existence, in a more near and blissful presence of the Lord, after leaving this clay house. Third, This mortal body, also shall put on immortality, and be fashioned like Christ’s glorious body. O bless God for the beautiful hope of a child of God.

Before sundown, I awoke from a short sleep, instantly felt heavenly sweetness in my soul and comfort in body. Behold the Lord had taken away all the fever. Bless his holy name! That night some of the beloved came together and anointed me for complete healing. We believe the Lord granted the petition, and after much trial of my faith, I am now feeling well in body once more, and rapidly gaining strength.

Thank God! the church he planted here four years ago is still here. Though much tried, the gates of hell have not prevailed against it. Recently the Lord has found out quite a German settlement in the city, a number of whom are very hungry for the precious truth, and are walking in the same. Several of them have escaped out of Romanism, and are very grateful to God for their deliverance. We expect to pitch the tabernacle in their part of the city. We will doubtless remain a few weeks in this city.

Question.

NOW, brother, do you think as much of me, being a Free Methodist and a child of God, and a member of the church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven? “All the walls are broken down between me and God’s people. Don’t you try to get joiners when you hold meetings?”

Your brother,

G. W. Skinner.

ANSWER.

Since God has set our own soul free from all the traps, straps, and abominable machinery of Babylon, he is our witness that we have neither asked nor encouraged any person to join anything on earth. But we have continually warned all men to escape out of all these snares, and be joined to the Lord Jesus Christ only, according to the New Testament, i. e., “Believers were the more added to the Lord.” — Acts. “We are complete in him,” and everything else that men can join is a humbug.

The brother is mistaken when he says every wall is broken down between him and God’s people. He is a Free Methodist, is in that sect, that party, that schism, organized separate from every other sect, and from God’s people out of all schisms, who only abide in Christ, and are complete in him. We hope indeed that the brother is not as intensely sectish in spirit and bigoted as F. M’s are generally. But if even quite free from the sect spirit, he is nevertheless enclosed in a sect wall; he is a Free Methodist. All Christians are not F. M’s; hence by his sect membership he puts a wall between himself and all Christians not in his pen.

But the question, do I think as much of the brother, being a Free Methodist? Now this thing of liking and loving, which is the same thing as above expressed, has different features. God loves sinners, and we love all the ungodly, and the deluded and men in error, in the sense of pity and concern for their souls, and solicitude for their future salvation. But love, like, “think of,” has another feature besides that of sympathy and well wishing; namely, that of respect for, admiration of, and fellowship with. And this love, fellowship and admiration are proportionate to the degree of the enduement of the Spirit and truth of God. So to say that I think as much of, or admire a Free Methodist as much as I do a free man in Christ Jesus, is the same as saying I admire error as much as I do truth. I cannot do this. While a true child of God who stands in the light of heaven, loves about equally the souls of all men, so far as relates to sympathy and well-wishes, when love moves on the plane of fellowship, and delighting in, it is only when all walk in the light as God is in the light, that these can exist. It is just as impossible for me to have the same fellowship for a Free Methodist as for a man who is pure in heart and clear in the truth, as it is for truth to fellowship error as readily as truth itself. Truth and error are natural antipodes, and cannot like each other, or be in fellowship. And when I know that Free Methodism is a structure of error, the truth of God in my soul cannot fellowship the thing; and he that lives in it necessarily destroys in measure, fellowship between him and all who stand free from all those creeds and crafts of error and confusion.

This brother says he is a child of God, and a member of the “church of the firstborn which are written in heaven.” This brings us into one family, one church, and would produce perfect fellowship. But in addition to this, he is also in the F. M. sect. Now because I love truth and hate error, I fellowship him in the former, but am disgusted with him in the latter. I admire him in the former but am ashamed of him in the latter. As I love God and all his truth, I am compelled to abhor that which dishonors Him. And the F. M. sect, with all others, casts the lie in the face of Christ, that the church he built, the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven, is not sufficient, not perfect, not complete, but we must make and join something else written in earth. — Jer. 17:13. Ye that love God hate evil. Amen.

Word From the South.

_____

Hyde Park, Ala., April 19, 1892.

Dear Trumpet Readers: We have received some letters from some of the saints in the North. Now we will write a few words in regard to homes here in the South. Land is very cheap, from $1.25 to about $15.00 per acre, with as good water as we ever found any where; must dig from 15 to 40 feet. Wells need no walling, and there are a great many fine springs. Health as a general thing is very good. Have had but little sickness in our family. School privileges are not very good, but getting better. There are a great many of the Southern folks leaving, and going to Texas, and they are bound to sell at some price, so land can be bought very cheap. We can raise any kind of grain here that can be raised in the North. Fruit is very plentiful where it is taken care of. A man coming here with a few hundred dollars, willing to work and manage, can do well. Crops never fail altogether. Any body thinking of coming South to make it their home will do well to come and see the country before moving. Do not take any body’s word for it, but come and see. A great many move here before coming to see the country, and do not find everything as expected, and in the course of five or six months will be for returning north with a great deal less than they brought here. So I think it best to come and see, at least before buying. Now if their are any of the dear saints that have a desire to come to this place, please write to me and I will gladly answer. We are much in need of a minister here that is not afraid to preach the gospel. We will gladly welcome any such here. We are poor but will gladly help what we can when here. With this I will close, asking all of God’s dear ones to pray for us, that we may do his whole will.

OUT OF BABYLON!

Dear Editor of Gospel Trumpet: I received a copy of the Trumpet, a few days ago which some one had sent to my brother. It is the first pure gospel outside of the Bible, I have ever read. Five years ago I was wonderfully saved, in Evangelist Maria B. Woodworth’s meetings, in the state of Indiana. I immediately came to Ohio. God showed me that I was weak, although washed in the blood of the Lamb; and while praying in the woods and hollows for God to come to me as he was with Sister Woodworth, all heaven seemed to be let down, and all the tops of the trees were hid from my sight, and the Lord said unto me thus — Unless I give you greater power and cleanse you with the fire of holiness, you cannot see the kingdom of God. Then I began to understand such scriptures as these: “Be ye perfect, even as your father which is in heaven is perfect,” Matt. 5:48; and “as He which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation,” etc., 1 Pet. 1:15, 16; and “this is the will of God, even your sanctification.” 1 Thess. 4:3. “Without holiness no man shall see the Lord.” After this I feasted day and night on the heavenly manna. I succeeded in getting Sister Woodworth to come here. She did not like any one to profess a higher life. She told me that “these sanctified people were the worst enemies to the truth in the world.” She held a glorious meeting here at Shawnee, Ohio. Cried out mightily against the sin of the churches, and God was with her in the salvation of many souls, but as soon as the work was done, she organized them into “the Church of God” sect, which in reality is only a sister to the other daughters of “the bond woman.” Now began the test. I knew not what to do. I knew very well God called me to work for Him. I gave my name in along with the rest, but before they were fellowshiped I withdrew. I have stood outside ever since, although I have worshiped under their yoke and helped them in revival meetings, knowing all the time that I like Jonah was fighting against God. It has caused me much darkness, and when I got the GOSPEL TRUMPET, it struck me like a clap of thunder that “these are the people.” Paul says, “Christ loved the church and gave himself for it, that he might sanctify and cleanse it.” Eph. 5:25, 26. “And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as He is pure.” Glory to God! I am washed in the blood of the Lamb, and intend to keep out of Babylon. Amen.

A. Dennis.

Corning, O.

NOTE.

The above letter was not sent in for publication, but it contains much truth which will doubtless be of benefit to others. We have received letters from different persons regarding the “trance” religion of Mrs. Woodworth, and have read some of her writings, which correspond pretty well with what the brother has written.

Her worldly attire, sect-building, rejecting holiness, etc., does not give much evidence that her wonderful power is the power of the Holy Ghost.

May the people learn to do the whole will of God in all things and it will take them out of sectism. And they will not lack power with God, and will live on a holy plane with God.

LETTER FROM MASSACHUSETTS.

Editor of the Gospel Trumpet: I have been reading the Trumpet with a deep interest, and I find it is one of the so-called “cranks” of the nineteenth century. It is so out of line with the so-called religious periodicals of the present day, and this is why I like to read it. It is not muddled up with the world, the flesh and the devil. I am aware of the fact that if a person dare step out of these sectarian ruts, he or she is at once set down as a “crank” or a fool; but it matters not to me, call me by what name you please, I would rather be a fool for Christ’s sake, enjoy his approving smiles, be filled with the Holy Spirit, than to be called wise by a wicked church member, and be damned at last. The popular church member disdains the idea of being led by God’s Holy Spirit; and anything that tends to spiritual life they are ready to condemn, and what the worldling loves, they love; what the worldling does they do; and I don’t wonder the profligate unconverted man or woman is often led to exclaim, “They are no better than I am.” It is hard work for one that has never known the all cleansing power of God, to love the society of the pure and holy. One professing to be a Christian said to me a short time ago, “I will not give up my worldly pleasures for the sake of religion;” and as a matter of course they are often found in the party room and at the dance: and a social game of cards, with wine interspersed is among their favorite pastimes. God pity and save such deluded and God-forsaken professors. It is no wonder there is a spiritual dearth in Zion, with her membership in such a spiritual condition, — “blind leaders of the blind,” and they must eventually fall into the ditch together. Yet step out of this routine of topic religion and fashionable churchianity, and you are sure to meet with a hearty rebuff wherever you go, and then comes up the cry, “Cranks,” “Old Fogies,” and you can see by every move they make that they wish to impress upon the mind that they are the only persons of importance on the earth, and a wag of their head shows the disposition of the serpent that is in them. My prayer is that the seven thousand and upwards that have not bowed the knee to Baal may be increased to a mighty host, and that Satan’s bulwarks may be torn down; and that every soul that to day is fighting in the army of the Lord may have a fresh baptism of the Holy Spirit, and go out to do battle for the Lord, and not yield to this man-fearing and pleasing spirit that is so common to day among professing Christians. The time is speedily coming when sectarian walls are going to take a mighty fall, and when those who really are the children of God will take a decided stand for God and salvation. No doubt the powers of hell will rage, and perhaps threaten with a “rack of torture,” or a fiery fagot, but the true and tried will stand despite the legions of hell. God help every true soldier to stand firm for God and his cause, blow the Trumpet faithfully and warn the people; then their skirts will be clear, and a victor’s crown will be theirs when God comes to make up his jewels.

Yours for a full and free salvation,

Mrs. L. M. Hoyt.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

St. Anns, Ont., April 26, 1892.

Dear Saints: We are in the field of cattle and on the side of victory with the glory of God in our souls. We have just arrived here from Jordan, Ont. where we have closed a ten days’ meeting. We met an unusual amount of prejudice and from rather an unsuspected source, mostly from the New Mennonites, who claim they are all right but the name. But we found the sect wall and sect spirit just as high as any. They had just turned Bro. David Moyer and Sister Church out for holding the standard too high; Sister Church for disturbing their meetings by shouting, as it is out of date in sectism. God help us to let the people know more about heaven in this world. There were but two consecrations, yet a good number held up their hands for prayers.

Your brother with the whole armor, fighting for souls,

G. T. Clayton & Co.

Denver, Colo., April 23, 1892.

Dearly Beloved Saints: Our short visit with the saints at Kenesaw, Neb. was a very precious time to our souls, and the little church was wonderfully strengthened. Nine services were held and several persons consecrated themselves unto the Lord, and were filled with the power of God. Bro. Achor who had been sick for several days was able to attend the last meeting. Two of his daughters came from Kansas the day before we left. The Lord heard and answered the prayers of the saints in behalf of Bro. Warner, and completely healed him of rheumatism, but while at Kenesaw, lad an attack of lung trouble, but the Lord is having his way with him, enabling him to rejoice in affliction and at present is improving, and by your prayers and the blessing of God we feel that he will soon be strong again.

In company with Bro. Willis and family we arrived at this place last evening and have already met some of the dear saints, and expect to begin meeting to night. Continue to pray for us.

Yours in him,

E. E. Byrum.

Freeman, Mo., Apr. 25, 1892.

Dear Trumpet Readers: Our last report was from Carthage, Mo. We went from there to Webb City, but found things in a bad condition. The saints’ chapel was in the hands of the Free Methodist sect, and they were holding a meeting; they held four weeks there, and then moved into another meeting-house belonging to one of the sects, and continued for about two weeks longer, without a single move among the people. Surely there is not any salvation in Babylon any more. We went out into the country about three miles and held three or four meetings. But on the account of a very bad cold we had to close, as we could hardly speak out loud. We then came back to Webb City, the house being vacated, and after three or four days’ rest our voice got stronger, and we spoke three times to the people there, which was received by those who were honest, but was rejected by the crooked professors, as might be expected. As the church had no elder or deacon, the Lord chose one, and when we all knelt before God he showed us that it was dear Bro. Geo. Brake, whom we ordained as the same. Dear saints, pray for the church at Webb City. We are now here at Freeman, in company with Bro. Otto Bolds and his wife, and are in a place of much crookedness, as there are a good many of the Good Way and Anti-ordinance people here. Some of them have said that none of the saints dare come here and teach the ordinances. Well, we are here in the name of Jesus and will teach all of the word, because he that is for us is more than all that can be against us. Praise his dear name! Now we ask all of the saints to pray for us that we may have much heavenly wisdom to use here among the people.

Your saved brother in Christ,

J. L. June.

TESTIMONIES.

Thy Testimonies are Wonderful.
Psa. 119:129.

Union Grove, Ill.

Dear Saints: I felt that I ought to write my testimony to the Trumpet. I was at the Bangor camp meeting last June, but the devil sent me home before I got free in Jesus. But now I am saved and can praise God from the very depths of my soul. I am free from all of my filthy habits, such as tobacco, and all other foolishness. Praise God! I am living in all the light God lets me have, and I hope you will all pray for me that I may always measure up to the whole word of God.

I remain your brother in Christ,

Dear Saints: God bless you all. I am still saved and sanctified, and trusting in the merits of Jesus’ blood. I want to tell all the dear ones everywhere that the last year of my life has been the most victorious of all my years. O hallelujah to our God and King for victory! Let us exalt his name together. I live in a very wicked little town, with no place to meet with God’s children; but the dear Lord takes good care of me, and gives me good health and strength, so I can do what my hands find to do, with my might. O how I love to work for Jesus! He has done so much for my soul and for my body, which is the temple of the Holy Ghost.

Your ever true sister, saved and sanctified,

Sidney, O

Dear Saints of God: I feel like praising the dear Lord for salvation full and complete, that keeps me free from all sin and gives me victory over the flesh, the world and the devil. Glory to God for that blessed peace that I do enjoy in my soul continually! I pray God to send us a holy minister, filled with the holy fire that it may burn up all that is of a chaffy nature. Dear saints, I realize it means something to walk in the narrow way. I do praise God this morning that when I saw that I was deceived of the devil, and had been into sin, I got down before God and repented of my sins, and God received me as his child, and the next day I was sanctified wholly. How my soul was blessed when I knew I was back into the kingdom of God! But while I rejoice in my own salvation, I feel sad for other souls; but may God help them to see their condition and come and be saved before it is too late. Pray for me.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT.

__________

THE SKIN.

_____

SOME one has said that “cleanliness is next to godliness,” and so it may be in a certain sense. Dirt or filth comes from many sources, so we have not only to contend with particles of an earthy nature, but also that which is given off by our own bodies. The skin is really a second edition of the lungs and some have gone so far as to call it the third lung. Much of the refuse of the body passes out through the pores in the form of perspiration or sweat. This sweat contains, water, salts, and an animal substance that, if not allowed to pass away freely, mingles with the worn out scales of the scarf skin or epidermis, and forms a coat over the surface of the body; stops the sweating process, poisoning the blood and leaving one subject to the diseases peculiar to his climate or the season of the year. Malaria is the prevalent trouble in the spring season in nearly all sections, especially in countries where bodies of standing water abound. Fever and ague, chills, neuralgia and many other spring complaints too numerous to mention, are aided and abetted by a clogged skin. Impure water, such as we find near the surface in many places may truly have been the cause from which this state of affairs sprang; yet the effects of the latter encouraged by the sluggish state of our bodies, (the result of the former) invite these springtime epidemics to make their home in our systems, just as certain as though it were a matter of choice.

Let us look for a moment at the very common complaint, “spring fever,” otherwise named “laziness.” Some it is true are more or less affected all their lives; but it is not our wish to treat of that at present. We speak of that lassitude of body and mind that affects many at this season of the year; even numbers of those to whom the charge of laziness could not be imputed. That there is such an epidemic as spring fever, every one who will take a second thought will admit. Now when it takes hold of you is the time to act, if you have neglected to do so before. What causes it? That question answered and we have the key to the cure and the preventive. The blood, the servant and scavenger of our earthly house, has been obstructed in the performance of some of its duties. In this case the oxygen it carried to all parts of the body, contained impurities. The water used in the body contained germs, which, if allowed to breed and grow, insured disease. These two emenies must be met by the cleansing stream of the blood and washed out of the body by its various thoroughfares. Each portion or organ of the body is expected to do its work; do it thoroughly. The patient in this case had neglected cleanliness. Nature had done her part faithfully: the refuse had been deposited on the outside of the body, and had there been an outlet for more, it would have been there also. Some several millions of pores were stopped up almost completely; exhausted nature entered complaint and our patient is sick. In other words his system is filled with organic matter foreign to its needs, and his sensations of fullness indicate exactly, the state of the body. The body is so constructed that one organ can to a certain extent aid another in the performance of its functions, but can never take its place.

Respiration is of two classes; the visible (sweat), and the invisible; and is a process that is going on freely a the time when unobstructed. Close up a man’s pores entirely in any weather, no matter how cool and he would be a corpse in from twenty- four to forty-eight hours. History gives a case of a young child, being closely covered with gold leaf to act the part of an angel in (I think) a Roman festival, and as its body was completely shut in, the pores were prevented from acting and it died soon afterward. Take a small animal and give its body a coat of varnish and it will die within ten or twelve hours.

Now for the cure, as well as the preventive. Water, warm or cold, as your system is able to stand, a flesh brush and a turkish towel. (If you use soap, be sure it is rinsed thoroughly from your skin.) After an application of plenty of water, get some one to take a coarse towel and rub your skin thoroughly till it turns red, from increased circulation. Your blood has now been assisted to restore you to nature’s order. You may not feel just right yet, so keep up the rubbing. Friction is a valuable agent, and its benefits are fully shown in the increase of animal electricity, and the flow of blood to the surface.

There are times when baths should not be taken; for instance, just after or before a meal. The best time for bathing is on rising in the morning. Use hot, cold or lukewarm water according to your strength. A strong, vigorous person may use cold water; a weak person should avoid cold water as a bath. There are many rules aid down for bathing, but space does not permit their setting forth. Bathe every morning if convenient, if not, as often as you can; at least twice a week. Exercise works off the loose scales from the skin, and keeps the flood circulating freely. Frequent rubbing of the body is the next best thing to bathing, and should not be neglected. Persons subject to spring complaints should eat regularly, avoid salt and fat meats, and confine themselves as much as possible to a vegetable diet. Quit eating before your appetite is satisfied; drink nothing during the meal; eat slowly, and rest at least half an hour after eating. If you have no appetite, dyspeptics excepted, it is because you need none. Allow nature to do her work without the so-called aid of any nostrum, blood purifier, pills or anything of the sort, and your attack of malaria will soon be a thing of the past.

Your Spring and Summer Hats.

_____

Dear Sisters of the Household of God: Since the time has come for the purchase of new hats and bonnets for spring and summer use, will you please suffer the admonition of the plain word of God, and that of ourself, your humble servant and saved brother. I, the servant of Jesus, in his name, admonish you in the love of God, and for the good of his cause, that you consult not the new fashion plates for the season. But read the good old book that is from heaven, and as near as possible conform to its teaching. I call your mind to the following texts:

In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls or costly array; but (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. — 1 Tim. 2:9, 10.

Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives: while they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. Whose adorning, let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands. — 1 Pet. 3:1-5.

And be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. — Rom. 12:2.

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. — Jas. 1:27.

You perceive, dearly beloved, no one cut, shape or style is pointed out. The costume of no particular nation is held up as a standard for us. Only the imperative demand of “plainness,” modest apparel, with shamefacedness, which latter doubtless refers to the veil, then thought an indispensable article of female modesty. Shamefacedness evidently relates to the then custom of veiling the face; but as we lave recently shown, other costumes now mark the distinction, and subordination of the female sex.

Not with broidered hair, or gold, or pearls or costly array. Costly array sought because fine and showy is condemned, but a good substantial article may be purchased as a matter of economy, and no wrong.

This plain and modest apparel with nothing superadded for show or pride, the word says, “Becometh women professing godliness.” O Lord, how true! How beautiful the agreement between holiness of heart and perfect plainness, cleanness, neatness, tidiness, and modesty of apparel. But O Lord! thou knowest that a professor of holiness with a display of plumes, or rag flowers, or their substitutes, bunched up ribbons or velvet, is like a “jewel of gold in a swine’s snout,” is inconsistent disobedience to the plain commands of God, and a stumbling block to souls for whom Jesus died. The holy command is repeated in 1 Pet. 3:3, “Whose adorning let it not be the outward adorning.” Here is a positive prohibition; and if you bunch up and criss-cross ribbons on your hats and bonnets, or suffer the world’s bustle shoulders on you, or any other vain superfluities, you know now, if you never have before, that you are a transgressor of the word of God, and may every minister of God “execute His word.”

“Keep himself unspotted from the world,” and of course women likewise. Every trinket on your body, and every workmanship in cutting and sewing that is not essential to proper fit, comfort and wear, is from the spirit of the world, and is the outward sign of a spot on your soul. “Be not conformed to this world.” But whatever you buy, make or wear, see that it is so consistent with the word of the Lord that you can do it in his name. O beloved, let me admonish you all to seek a large portion of those beautiful inward adornments so rare in God’s eye.

Finally, beloved, plainness involves not only the absence of all jewelry, trimmings, etc., but it implies that the garment, hat or bonnet should have a proper and natural shape. A hat without superfluous trimmings, and yet having some of this world’s ridiculous twists, hills and hollows, cocked on one side and flopped on the other, etc., is still an abomination in the sight of God. A plain bonnet has nothing added beyond that of a practical, decent, properly fitted covering for the head. A plain hat is one free from all non-essentials to its usefulness, a plain crown and rim, with a modest band. And whatsoever is more than that cometh of evil. This is as true as God’s word is true. O ye daughters of Zion, will you obey the word? O let the glorious camp of the saints everywhere present this beautiful scene, and there shall be showers of blessings and mighty saving power. O beloved, do not think that we wish to put a yoke on your neck, other than that easy one of Christ. We only lift you the standard of his word, and know that great good to your soul and others depends upon all obeying, And our soul is so deeply moved and our heart burdened that we pen these lines in the presence of God, when scarcely able to sit upon our seat, and not even having undertaken to write at all for days.

We simply add that the standard we have raised does not require absolute uniformity. There will be vanity in color, size, depth of crown, etc. Just each one may be able to find that which nearest fills, the demand of the word. O for Jesus’ sake let all crookedness and spots be put away! Amen.

Dear Saints: I praise God for the knowledge that I am saved and kept by the power of God. We are but few here, but in the name of Jesus we are reigning in this life, though the enemy as a roaring lion is abroad doing all he can to overthrow. Pray or us here.

Your sister,

P. M. Price.

I can say this evening “I know that my Redeemer liveth,” and I am praising him for his wonderful goodness to me. He led me out into this beautiful evening light, over two years ago. Since that time I have had more peace and joy than in all my life before. Nor do I grow weary of this precious service; I am now more determined than ever to spend and be spent for the Master. Pray for me.

Yours, saved by the precious blood of Christ,

E. C. Smith.

Dear Saints: I feel led this morning to testify through the Trumpet to the goodness of God to me. I know that I have passed from death unto ife,for I have the witness of the Spirit that I am a child of God. Oh praise his name for ever for a salvation that saves from all sin! I have enjoyed this peace for over two years; nor do I grow weary in well doing, but I feel much encouraged to go on in the service of the Lord. Pray for me that I may lead a life hid away with Christ in God.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel it would be to the glory of God to tell what the Lord has done for me. Praise his holy name! He has saved me from sectism and all the snares and pitfalls of Satan. It has been over three years since I heard holiness preached; and I am so glad I ever accepted it. I do praise his name that this morning finds me saved and sanctified to do the whole will of God. He has saved me from tobacco and coffee, to both of which I was a slave. Yes, God is able to save us from all idols and fleshly lusts if we only come to him in the right manner.

Dear Children of God: I am praising the Lord for a full and free salvation, although it has not been but a few months since I gave my heart to him. I have had enough happiness already to pay me for turning to God, but I expect by his grace to live all my life to do his will. Oh, what a blessed way to live, free from all condemnation! I am satisfied with Jesus here, he’s everthing to me. Hallelujah! I love to read the Trumpet, and I am so thankful that there are a few who are willing to take the Bible for their guide, and walk in the pure light of the gospel.

Your brother, saved through the blood of Jesus,

Dear Trumpet Readers: We fee led to give in our testimony for the first time in the columns of the Trumpet. This evening finds us saved. We bless God’s holy name for the wonderful blessings both spiritual and temporal that he bestows upon us. He has been so good to us the past winter, in healing these bodies of ours, and our children also. We were taken with what we thought was La Grippe, and some of us very bad; but we have taken God for our physician at other times of trouble and sickness, and he had raised us up, and we just believed he would again if we would trust him. So there being no elders near enough to call at the time, we just took our children to the Lord ourselves and anointed them in the name of the Lord Jesus, believing and feeling assured that his promises were sure, and he raised them up, two of them instantly. And they testify that the Lord healed them, for which we do praise his name and give him all the glory. We do praise his name that he is a very present help in time of need. Pray much for us.

Your brother and sister saved in Jesus’ blood,

J. I. & L. H. Berlocher.

Dear Trumpet Readers: Believing that it is to the glory of God, I will write my testimony. I have never written to the Trumpet, before or publication. But this morning finds me enjoying full and complete salvation. I am preaching the gospel whereunto I am called, and glorifying God in my body and spirit which are his. Glory to Jesus! I am filled with sweet joy and peace in believing in the fullness of faith. I opened meeting here last night. Some prospect of good being done, at least to the saints here, who are hungry for the word. There are some who have not defiled their garments, but are walking in the light with Christ Bless his holy name! May the blessing of our God rest upon the Trumpet and all of its readers. Amen.

Yours in the faith of Christ, and sanctification of the Spirit,

Edward Townsend.

Dear Saints: I feel led of the Lord to write my first testimony. Glory be to God! I feel while I am alone to day that God is with me. Bless his name forever! He is very good, and is a help to me indeed. I find that we may trust him for all things. I am so glad that I listened to that pleading voice. What peace of mind and body it does give me. Glory be to God forevermore! I love to read the dear Trumpet, and it cheers me so wonderfully. I often think of the dear saints I met while in Mo. Dear children of God, let us be faithful to the end. Oh, I mean to go on praising Jesus all the days of my life, whether it be short or long. I have sisters and brothers that are not saved, but I pray that they may come to our blessed Jesus before it is too late. I feel as I write that I am very near to Jesus. And I am so glad my dear husband is a believer in Christ. Dear saints, pray for him that he may be made wholly clean in God’s eyes.

Your saved sister in Christ,

Mrs. Lizzie C. Clark.

To all the Saints, Greeting: May God bless and keep you for Jesus’ sake. My testimony is that I am saved and Jesus is reigning in my soul complete. Oh praise his name! I do know that he saves and keeps me in that narrow way, and the way grows brighter and brighter. I praise him for his healing power which has healed my body. He has the same power he had when he was here on earth. He’s just the same dear loving Jesus, healing those who come unto him, and saving souls along the way. I have found it sweet to follow in the footsteps of our blessed Lord who did no sin. The blood of Jesus has cleansed me from all sin. The way is so narrow there are but few that are willing to follow Jesus when it comes to give up the world and suffer the persecutions which we read of in his word. “But if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye.” Oh how true it is! When persecution comes, it only fills my soul with glory, I am willing to suffer anything for Jesus’ sake. He keeps me in such sweet peace and contentment while my husband is out working for him, and supplies my every need. Oh! I never can praise his name enough for his goodness. I know if I continue faithful to the end I will enjoy that place that Jesus has gone to prepare for me, and where he is there I may be also. Pray that I may be true to the end.

Your sister in Jesus,

Minnie Orr.
