Call to Sinners.

_____

Sinners come to Jesus now,
At His sovereign feet do bow;
While His soft toned voice you hear
And His wondrous love is near,
Listen to the Savior’s call,
While around your friends do fall,
Bids you to the refuge flee,
For there still is mercy free.

Chorus.
Come to day while mercy calls,
Lest his judgment on you falls;
Flee to mercy from God’s ire,
’Scape the doom of endless fire.

Flee at mercy’s final voice,
Make the Savior now your choice
’Scape the dark and dismal pall
That’s now settling over all.
See the skeptic clouds arise,
Mists so dark upon the skies
O’er you who so often say,
I will wait another day.

Look, the darkness now in sight,
Looms up as a turbid night;
Sectish creeds and evils, too,
Babel fogs of hellish hue
Gathering o’er the populace,
’Sembling at the steeple place,
House of pride and high renown
Seeking for an earthly crown.

Jesus stands with smiling face,
Love and grace complete the race,
Joy and glory to attend
His true children to the end.
Come, oh come! then to Jesus,
From all bonds now he frees us;
In his image here again
Makes us kings and priests to reign.

G. R. Achor.

THE APOSTASY.

_____

THE Christian era is represented in the Word of God as a day, — a “day of the Lord,” which dawned with all the brightness of the morning. The holy prophets of old foretold this notable time when Christ would establish his church upon the earth, and to those who would fear the name of the Lord would the “Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings.” This “Sun of righteousness” was Christ, the light of the world; he who came to save the people from their sins and establish them in the ways of truth. He was a light to them that sat in darkness, and they who were willing to humble themselves and become his disciples, he gave power over devils and victory over the wickedness of this world. His disciples were of the “same mind,” and saw “eye to eye,” and through the name of Jesus they were enabled to perform miracles in the sight of men, and devils were made to “fear and tremble.” The church of God was not a human organized concern then, any more than it is at the present day. Christ placed the members in the body as it pleased him. It is a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any such thing.” — Eph. 5:27. And all the members are holy, and not one of them living in sin, because Christ is the door into this church, and nothing sinful can enter. The only way to get into God’s church is to be born into it, and we are then in his family; a son of God, a child of the king; a branch of the true vine.

Having then been born of God, and already a member of his body, would it not be presumption to think of joining anything else in order to belong to the church, when we are already in the church the very moment we get salvation?

This church was founded upon Christ the Rock of our salvation. — Matt. 16:18. It is his body. — Col. 1:24. And he is the head of it. — Col. 1:18. He purchased it with his blood, Acts 2:20. Its name is the Church of God. — 1 Cor. 10:32. The class hook is kept in heaven. — Heb. 11:24. Salvation then is the requirement which admits a person into the church. (Jno. 10:9.) And God places the members in the body as it pleases him (1 Cor. 12:13), bestowing such gifts upon them as they stand in need of, and all work in sweet harmony.

In the morning of this Christian era, the church had wonderful power; they met together “with one accord,” and the power of God was wonderfully manifested in and through them, and many were added unto the church. The sick were healed, devils cast out, and the gospel preached in all its purity.

But as the years passed by, people began to depart from the faith, and bring in false doctrines, heresies, schisms, etc., causing divisions, just as Paul said would take place. This was the starting point of sectism. There had been no human organization or creed among God’s people since the time of Christ; but now, persons, such as were fallen from grace, began to assemble together, and by the help of Satan himself, tried to devise some plan to deceive souls, and drag them down to ruin. This state of affairs continued until the enemy of souls had devised a plan to destroy souls by the wholesale. Before three centuries had passed by, the ruling power of the church was centralized in the bishop of Rome, and Roman Catholicism began to develop, and another important step was taken in the establishing of this creed, in the year 325, when the Nicene council was held. This sect, or “mother of harlots,” as the Bible terms it (Rev. 17:5), was called a church in order to better deceive souls; and the “man of sin” which Paul tells us will be made manifest, or revealed, is the papal power. People were forced, at the peril of their lives, to acknowledge the pope as the head of the church, and become submissive to the galling yoke of Catholicism, and renounce their former experience and belief. And those who would stand true to God, were martyred or had to suffer the most appalling persecution, often “resisting unto blood,” for the sake of Christ. The common people were denied the privilege of reading the Word of God. An awful time of spiritual darkness came upon the land; this was the time of which the prophets foretold, when the sun would go down at noon. The Sun of righteousness, or real church of God, seemed to be in obscurity, hid away behind the dark clouds of papacy: nevertheless God had true followers all through this time, who would not bow the knee to Baal; who preferred to obey God rather than man, and were hunted down and persecuted, and had to hide themselves in caves in order to worship God. But “truth crushed to earth shall rise again,” and thus it proved in this great and severe ordeal through which the church had to pass. Yet it took centuries for it to gain what seemed from an outward apearance, a good foothold, in order to rise above the over-hanging clouds of the spiritual darkness.

After awhile, a daughter was born into the family of mystic Babylon; or, in other words, another sect was formed, a split from the old mother of harlots, and in a few centuries there was an abundance of daughters born into the family, each making a league with the devil to bring honest souls into bondage, and with their oath of allegiance to obey the rules of the family or creed, became “unequally yoked together with unbelievers,” which the Word of God condemns. – 2 Cor. 6:14. It was not the intention of those good old reformers to enter into any league with the enemy in order to deceive souls. They saw the corruption of Romanism, and realized the judgments of God upon her, and thus made their escape, and not having sufficient light on the Word of God, their followers soon drifted into sectism, forming creeds one after another with the hope of bettering the condition of the church, not discerning the “body of Christ,” the true church. Dear honest souls united with them, believing it to be the best thing they could do, and worshiped God with all their hearts. Notwithstanding God blessed the labors of those who faithfully trusted him, yet that was no evidence that sectism itself was right, for they were doubtless walking up to the light they had on the Word of God. But the time was not far distant when he would send forth his judgments against these schisms, and deliver his children out of them, revealing unto them the true church of the living God.

Sectism soon reached its highest point, each schism or creed claiming to be the church, a branch of the true vine. Each fighting the other, having conflicting views and doctrines of teaching, yet claiming to belong to that one body, the “church of the living God.” O what darkness! what blindness! what soul-deceiving, soul-destroying nets and snares the enemy has prepared to capture the souls of men! This is the Babylon spoken of in Revelations. Babylon means confusion, and mystic Babylon is the spiritual confusion in the so-called churches of to day, which has been the means of making more infidels than have all the infidel writers during the past ages. Honest people give their hearts to God, and are invited and urged to join some of these so-called church es, “in order to have a home among God’s people;” and read in their Bible of the unity of God’s church, and begin to look about them, and find all the creeds arrayed one against the other. The consequence is, many, when they find themselves thus duped, come to the conclusion that Christianity is a farce and a failure, and thus infidelity takes up its abode in the heart, and multitudes are led astray and lost throughout eternity. The departing from “the faith once delivered to the saints,” was the beginning of sectism; was the beginning of the apostasy. From that time the church was shorn of its strength; what real honest souls were left were mostly joined to some branch of Babylon, and were not permitted to assert their liberty in Christ according to the Word of God, because of the rigid rules of their creed. Then came an awful famine throughout the land, a starving of souls, for want of spiritual food — the true bread of life. This famine is the one spoken of by the prophet Amos: “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land; not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but a hearing of the words of the Lord.” — Amos. 8:11. Truly this time has already come, and has been realized in the last few centuries. Ministers all over the land have become false shepherds, fleecing the flock and leaving them to starve. “Blind watchmen,” according to Isa. 56:9-12. “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.” — 2 Tim. 3:5. Is it any wonder that spiritual darkness prevails throughout the land, when such doctrines are taught from the pulpit, the press, at home, and everywhere? With “fair words and smooth speeches,” people are rocked to sleep (spiritually) right on the brink of hell, and seem to be unconcerned regarding the welfare of their souls; unawakened to their awful condition; joined to their idols; and because they were at ease in Zion — if they have ever advanced enough to enter her portals, — have become “lukewarm,” and have been spewed out because they were neither ‘cold nor hot.’ O the famishing of souls! the pestilence of unbelief and deception! it is widespread, almost universal. Darkness covers the land, and the scene is too appalling to behold.

What has been termed the church, has long ago entered the bridal chamber with the world, and the devil officiating at the nuptial ceremony, sealing the service with a smile of approval and best wishes that their happiness may continue and their fellowship never be broken. The happy bridal pair long ago entered upon their honeymoon; and as they travel along, bedecked alike in gaudy dress of worldly fashions, many church socials, fairs, suppers, aristocratic parties, etc., are given in honor of the same, and there is a time of general festivity and revelry.

The all-seeing eye of God witnesses the scene, and he sends forth his messenger declaring with a strong voice saying: “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit.” etc. — Rev. 18:2.

The great literal city of Babylon was taken in a time of festivity and revelry, while king Belshazzar was having a feast, and the people were drunken with wine. How true a type of the taking of spiritual Babylon, and utter fall, while “all nations lave drunk of the wine of wrath of her ornication.” — Rev. 18:3. “Thus shall Babylon sink to rise no more.” – Jer. 51:64

__________

KNOWING YOUR PLAGE IN THE BODY.

_____

“But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body as it hath pleased him.” 1 Cor. 12:18.

_____

NOW there are diversities of gifts but the same spirit, and there are differences of administrations but the same Lord. And there are diversites of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom: to another the word of knowledge by the same spirit: to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another diverse kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: but all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will — 1 Cor. 12:4-11.

We find each one of God’s little ones has a work to do, and how necessary it is for us to know what that work is so we may keep in the will and order of the Lord. I find a great many who claim God has placed them in the body, but they don’t know what he has given them to do. Now dear ones I consider it as necessary for us to know what he has for us to do as it is to know he has placed us in the body which is the church. For if we do not know what God has for us to do, or what part of the work is for us, we are liable to get out of the order of the Lord. So we ought to seek to know our place in the body. If we try to work in his service and don’t know what God would have us to do, or what gifts he has given us, we are likely to do more harm than good, for it is like the different trades. If a farmer was to go into a blacksmith shop to do a piece of work and not know any thing about that kind of work, he would be sure to ruin the tool he was working on. It he was to undertake to work in the cabinet shop or carpenters place it would be the same, the work would be spoiled. It is the same in working for God, we must know what God would have us to do, while we find there is something for all to do.

“And he gave some apostles and some prophets and some evangelists: and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: that we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.” — Eph. 4:11-14.

Dear ones let every one who has not found his part of this grand work for God, seek it at once, for I believe God wants us to know our place and when we find it let us be up and doing while it is day, for the night of death will soon come and then our work will be done. If God has called you to be a pastor he does not mean for you to be an evangelist. Let us find our work and then study to show ourselves workmen that need not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of God.

Oh how sweet to know we are in the will and order of the Lord. But when there are doubts as to whether you are doing what the Lord wants you to do or not, it is not so pleasant to the one who wants to be true to God. So let us keep low down at the feet of Jesus that he may teach us all the time, for all our help comes from him, and with out him we can do nothing. For I say through the grace given unto me to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; or ministry, let us wait on our ministering; or he that teacheth, on teaching; or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that showeth mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another; not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. — Rom. 12:3-16.

Paul said, woe is me if I preach not the gospel. This same woe is to every one who fills not his place. Remember the parable of the talents. There was one who just received one talent and buried it, that is he never put it to use. Now dear ones, are you putting all that God has given you to push his cause, or are you laying back as the man who buried his talent? Now while God has called some to be evangelists, and some to be teachers, some pastors, also some to give. Now if God lets me stay at home and requires me to give to the necessities of the saints while he calls another to go and preach his gospel, is that woe any more dreadful on him that is called to preach the gospel than on him that stays at home and does not give to the cause of God as he is prospered? Dear brother or sister let me exhort you to find your place in the body of Christ which is the church, and do your part of the work that it may go well with you when the Master comes to reward his servants that we can say as Paul said: “For I am now ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord the righteous Judge shall give me at that day, and not to me only but unto all them also that love his appearing.”

W. M. Wilson.

Danville, O.

Dear Saints: Brother Lytle and Brother Gibson of this place came and talked to me about the true church of God, and convinced me where I was. I heard them preach and bless God they were the very people I wanted to hear, and I accepted the truth. Praise the Lord for salvation! I was saved from all sin two years last March. Glory to Jesus! He has also saved one of my children. The Lord is my physician, he has healed me of heart trouble. Praise God for taking my feet from the miry clay of sin and placing them on the solid rock, Jesus Christ. Now I am happy both day and night. I am so thankful I have found the straight way. Praise his holy name! Pray for my unsaved children, and for their father.

From your saved and sanctified sister,

A. E. Taylor.

A brother writes from Ga., saying, “I see in a tract published by you that you say, “Christ enacted certain ordinances, namely, baptism, or in plain English, immersion,” etc. I ask where in the English New Testament I can find it.”

ANS. You will find the Greek wore baptizo translated into plain English, immersion, immerse, etc. every time the word occurs in the New Testament. In the following translations: the Emphatic Diaglott, the Bible Union, H. T. Anderson, Rotherham, and some others. It is several times translated immersion in the four gospels translated by George Campbell, and the epistles by James McNight, and these translators were Presbyterian scholars. King James forbid his translators to translate that and other words, hence you have the Greek word baptize, only changed in the last letter instead of the correct translation into immersion, which word means to us what baptizo does to Greeks.

Wife and I have made arrangements to sail for Liverpool July 1st, the Lord willing, and we do hope that the Lord will move on some one to join Bro. Daugherty in the work here in the East. Pray for wife and I, that we may be used in the hands of the Lord to the salvation of souls. Dear Saints of God: The Lord bless you all is my prayer. We are saved and sanctified and kept by the power of God. We held meeting at Hoppertown, Mich. ten days. Four were saved and are happy in Christ. Praise the Lord for his goodness to the people who will repent of their sins, “If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.” 1 Jno. 1:9. But if we cover our sins see what the Bible says about such, “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper, but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” Prov. 28:13. I pray God to help the people to repent according to the word of God. then they will be able to stand. May the Lord help us all to watch and pray.

Dearly Beloved Saints: The meetings in W. Va. were a glorious success for the Lord and closed with a sweeping victory for the cause. In all the meetings there were about twenty- three consecrations, most of whom for justification and some for entire sanctification. Eleven were baptized. Bro. L. P. Garner was ordained deacon in the church of God at Stanley. There were also some cases of divine healing by faith. The 14th we safely arrived at the Mich. C. M. were indeed thankful to meet so many of the friends and kind saints in the holy fellowship of Jesus. We received much light and precious instruction out of the word of the Lord; learned some precious lessons during and after the meeting, and wo ever expect to profit by it for the glory of God and increased usefulness in service. We arrived here the 21st, and the 23d, began meeting. The Lord is working in power. The third meeting, about eight raised there hands for prayers and more since then. Several have already consecrated themselves to the Lord, others are seeking and coming out into the light. To God only, be all the glory. We expect to be at Spokane, Wash. in Aug., the Lord willing, are also expecting a rich harvest of souls and glorious things from the Lord. All who wish to communicate with us, please address us at Grand Junction, Mich.

Yours in perfect love,

Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: The Lord bless you all. I am here in this place in the order of the Lord and in the name of Jesus, battling against the powers of darkness for the glory of God. And while I am in very feeble health, scarcely able to go at all and but for the grace of God would not be able to go, yet the Lord is blessing the truth and clothing it in power in La., as in other parts of the world. Bro. Chandler and I left Hickory Grove last evening and came to this place, and secured the old Presbyterian meeting house, which has been used of late for a school house. Last night the house was full and the Lord gave strength and helped us to preach his blessed truth. Praise his holy name! Quite a number of the holiness people from different parts of the country came to the meeting. Pray for us. Pray the Master to send more laborers here into this part of his vineyard, (Miss., La. and Ala.), we miss Bro. Cole so much. Well this place is an old town on the east of La. R. R. and on the banks of the Bongfalia and Bonchitta rivers and near Lake Poncha train and is the Parish site of St. Tamony parish, La., which is one of the Fla. parishes. Boats, schooners and cars all run up here. Many of the people are Catholics, some few Protestants, several saloons and a great deal of sectarian darkness and sin prevails here, although the people seem very kind and clever. Oh may the Lord give us victory over all the power of the enemy. Well we are praising God for victory so far, glory to God! who giveth us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. We will soon leave La. again to spend a few weeks with the saints in Leake and Madison Co’s., if the Lord wills, where we expect to hold an assembly meeting in the near future, during which time we hope to write and give you more concerning the work in the South and our travels and result of the meetings. Pray much for me, that the Lord may give all the needed grace and strength and victory every day.

Your brother in Christ,

W. W. Bradley.

THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of God to write my testimony. This evening finds me saved and trusting in Jesus. I do praise God for what he is doing for me and my family. Our little boy Tommy, was greatly afflicted for most two months, could neither talk nor walk. Had hands laid on, but seemed not to be the Lord’s will to heal him immediately, but he has healed him in his own good time, for which we give him all the glory. Praise his name forever. He can talk and walk and play.

Dear Saints: I am praising God that I have been led in this blessed evening light by hearing the true gospel preached. I never heard holiness preached until last fall and I did not believe what they preached, but I went to reading God’s word and soon became convinced that they were right, and I was wrong. So I began praying for God to lead me into the light and he did so. Now I can praise his holy name for showing me there is a true salvation for all who are willing to put their trust in him. Bless the Lord, I know he is worthy of all the praise. I am not sanctified, but I want all the saints to pray that I may be.

Grand Junction, Mich.

Dearly Beloved in Christ: For the first time in life, I attempt to write my experience. I was converted about eighteen years ago. I knelt at mother’s grave in Saline Co., Ill. when the dear Lord saved me from my sins. I was a drunkard and horse racer, but glory to the dear Lord, he gloriously saved me. The people began to persuade me to join the church, and I joined the protestant Methodist sect, and I felt that God wanted me to preach his Gospel. I went in to the evangelistic work, and in 1879 joined the Missionary Babtist sect, and was sanctified in 1892 and began to preach the blessed doctrine of full salvation, for which I was excluded from the sect. Glory to Jesus! I had received by the Spirit of the Lord, light in regard to the true church, and went to meeting the night that the charge was brought against me for preaching the doctrine of holiness. I went the same night to withdraw from them. I am free from all sin, glory be to God, ready to do his will, and I will say now, any of God’s dear children wanting revival work, write me at Carmi, Ill.

Yours in Christ,

Dear Saints: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony. The evening light came to this place last winter. I saw that I was not walking in the light and saw that I had to cleansed myself from all uncleanness. I stopped chewing tobacco and had peace, but not such peace as others claimed to have. Carnality kept rising up in me and I went to smoking again and sinned, but went to the altar for pardon and was blessed for a few days, then gave way to the wiles of the devil again and went to smoking. Then I felt God had cast me off. I prayed to God to save my soul and the Lord led me to go to camp meeting. A Sister asked me to go to the altar. I went, but told her there was nothing for me and I received nothing. I went to bed that night still praying God to save my soul. O the awful night I spent. I could not sleep. I got up and walked the grounds, asking God to save me, a sinner, and God shewed me what I must do to be saved. The next night God forgave me my sins, and the night following I laid myself a living sacrifice on the altar and the next day was baptized. The Lord led us to visit a sister, living in Cheshire, on our way home. We read some of the Word and prayed with her. There the Holy Ghost fell upon me and my heart was filled with overflowing joy. When God gets us where he wants us, he will send the Comforter to abide in our hearts. Praise the Lord for full salvation that saves us from all sin. I am saved, sanctified and ready to do the whole will of God as far as he lets the light shine on my pathway. Pray for me.

MY EXPERIENCE.

_____

Eubanks, Ky.

The dear Lord moves me to write my experience. Seven years ago this month God saved me and sanctified me, and called me to preach his word. But I was very poor, having a large family to support. I said, Lord if you will furnish me a home for my family I will go. So instead of moving out upon his promises by faith, I began to exert every nerve and would labor hard, and one speculation after another came before me until I was involved at least to the amount of twenty-four hundred dollars, but during the time, the dear Lord in answer to my earnest cry, did provide me with this home here and showed me plainly I should move my family to it. We then lived in southern Indiana, but my wife not being willing, I began to obey her voice rather than God; so he permitted the devil to trap me so completely that all I had was in the lawyer’s hands. Then wife and I began to see ourselves as we never did before. The Lord even showed me a little over a year ago by a dream that I had just one more year to live and I had it caused myself. Now the Lord said, if you go where I tell you to and obey my voice you shall live, if not, you shall die as I have warned you, and shall lose all you have, leaving your family destitute, and your soul in hell. Now came the test. I asked the brethren what to do, they said, ask the Lord, I asked the lawyers, they said, leave it all with us. The dear Lord would say, trust me and obey me. I‘ saw death and poverty just before me all the time. I said, I will obey God. So I began to pack up. I said Lord I can but trust you though you slay me.

We met with the dear saints the night we arrived here and while meeting was going on some enemy set fire to our house burning it to the ground, supposing he would drive us off. Praise God, it is wonderful how the Lord has delivered us and ours out of the hands of the devil, and he has been wonderfully blessing our souls and our labors in saving others, and has raised up over 30 here who are standing out in the clear light of full salvation, meeting together four and five times a week, and they are now faithfully laboring to get buildings up for a camp-meeting this fall, and we are here at Summerset 18 miles from Eubanks holding up Jesus and souls are getting saved. Five justified, three sanctified, and others under conviction. One dear soul, Sabbath morning, stripped her ear rings and tobacco, and a poor man at night was prostrated on the floor. We expect to go from here to Jackson Co., Ind. near Crothersville, the Lord willing. Any one wishing our labors will correspond with us at that place.

Yours, saved and sanctified,

R. Cloe.

OBITUARIES.

_____

Died, Near Dysart, Ia., June 13, 1893, sister Annie M. Gnagy, aged 23 years, 11 months and 11 days.

Sister Annie has lived in the enjoyment of this uttermost salvation about five years. She died firm in the faith. The greatest desire of her life seemed to be a life of sacrifice and self denial for the benefit and happiness of those around her. Her death was very sudden, she having been sick only about two weeks. Indeed it hardly seems possible yet that she has gone, no more to be seen among us. Her loving spirit and life of heavenly sunshine is sadly missed in this world of sin and sorrow. She has left a sad vacancy in our hearts that can never be filled in this world. We could never be reconciled to her sudden departure from our midst, were it not that we know she has only been translated to fairer realms of bliss and eternal sunshine. God knows best what is most for our good and his glory. While it seems to us that her dear precious and useful life could not have been spared from the Master’s vineyard, yet he knows how to get the most good from this sad event. We all can say with resigned and submissive hearts, Father thou knowest best, Thy precious will be done. She leaves father, mother, four brothers and three sisters who all realize their sad loss. Some of the family are unsaved and we pray that this bereavement may cause them all to seek salvation and life in Sister Annie’s Redeemer.

Funeral services were held by H. L. Shirk.

J. W. Byers.

_____

The following is an extract from a letter written May 10, to Sister Luella Byers, which is Sister Annie’s last testimony for this life.

Dear Sister in Jesus: May grace, mercy and peace be multiplied unto you, and may you ever be filled with the knowledge of God’s will. Amen. Your letter was received; how glad I am to hear from you again. It does my soul good to hear of those of like precious faith. I am glad to know that you are still fighting the good fight of faith, and working for the blessed Master. Blessed vocation. I would sooner have the honor of dragging a lost soul out of the very mouth of hell and leading it to the fount of blood that washes guilt away, than sit on the highest throne on earth. My only aim in this life is to live for God, and win perishing souls to the cross of Christ. Truly God’s service is a reasonable service. My prayer is that we may ever have a heart full of the love of God, and our mouths full of the words of God, and a life full of the works of God. Hands, feet and mind and affections ever busy seeking and winning the lost. How sad to see perishing souls going heedless down to woe each day. Truly the harvest is great and the laborers few. Pray ye the Lord of the harvest to send forth more laborers, that the salvation of Jesus may yet reach the hearts of many who have never heard of the Savior’s love, and that many who are yet under the galling yoke of sectism may hear and obey the command: “Come out of her my people”. Praise God for the blessed Evening Light, that drives away all darkness and confusion and makes us of one heart and mind. It lights our pathway all along the journey of life and we need not walk in darkness. Amen. I suppose you are all enjoying yourselves very much since Bro. Jake’s are there. I often wish I were there too, especially when Sabbath comes. Here I have none of the saints to meet with and worship God. But I am glad we can serve God if there is no one else around us that does. “Alone with Jesus, Oh how sweet to worship at his lovely feet.” Last Tuesday, John and I were at the grave-yard to fix little Jessie’s grave. They have just had a tombstone put up, I never saw little Jessie or did any thing for her but fix her little grave. I planted some flower seeds on it. As far as I know now I shall go back to Dysart in about three weeks. Of course I would like very much to be there with you where I could see all your dear faces once in a while, but I am perfectly satisfied to be where I feel God wants me. You know Lula, we are not our own. If God leads me back to Ill. or across the sea, I can say amen, any where for Jesus. I do not think I shall get to the June camp-meeting, may be not to any of them this summer. I did intend to go, but at present the way is closed. I do hope Bro. J’s can come to Dysart during the summer. May God send them. Sadie says she wishes they could come out here and hold meeting. My prayer is, God will send some of his fire brands here to show people their sins. I believe there are honest souls here who would accept the truth. Sadie is very much in favor of the truth. I pray she may yield her heart to Jesus. Pray for her, also for John. How I long to see them saved. Well Jesus keeps my heart and mind pure and in perfect peace because it is stayed on him. Now I have a question to ask you, why is the heart of man fully set to do evil? There is a Bible answer for it. May God bless you and ever keep you abiding under the shadow of the Almighty, where no harm can betide. Much love to you and all the saints. Write soon. I am your humble, trusting, blood washed sister.

Annie M Gnagy.

PURITY.

_____

“And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.” 1 Jno. 3; 3,

_____

THERE are many professors of religion in the world who deny that we can live pure lives here below. Whenever we hear anyone express such an opinion, we may know that they have never been to the fountain of purity and been cleansed from all inbred sin. Thank God, there is a fountain open in the house of David where the vilest of sinners may go and be made pure. O, the wonderful love that God manifested to a lost and dying race when he sent his Son into the world that we might live through him. And how blessed to know that we have tasted the pure water of life, and our sin-sick souls have plunged into the fountain and been made pure. Hallelujah! And now we have covenanted with God to obey him, and he has said, “Go and sin no more.” Now that the great gift of salvation has been so freely bestowed upon us, it behooves us to watch and pray without ceasing lest we neglect this gift by allowing Satan to sow tares in the field of our hearts. God’s pure word is a “lamp to our feet, and light to our pathway,” and the Holy Spirit is our teacher. Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Only the pure in heart shall dwell with Christ. God requires purity of heart and action; a life wholly devoid of sinful manifestations. We are commanded in 1 Tim. 5:22 to “keep thyself pure.” And in Rom. 6:19 — For as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity, unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness, unto holiness. We are to be blameless and harmless the sons of God, so that we will be true lights in this sin- cursed world. Dearly beloved ones, it is not what we profess to be, but what we are, and what our lives manifest to those around us. If our meat and drink is to do the will of God, and we are living in the land that flows with milk and honey, having our souls watered with the dews from heaven, surely our lives can manifest nothing but the love of God. If we walk in the Spirit, we shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. Satan is very wily, and uses all manner of cunning craftiness to deceive us. But as long as we abide under the shadow of the Almighty, we are safe. Oh. how careful we should be not to grieve the Holy Spirit of God by allowing one sinful thought to harbor in our mind. The Word says that the “carnal mind is enmity against God, for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.” Indeed, many profess to be cleansed from all carnality who if they would consult Webster, and find what carnality means, no doubt some would see the need of tarrying longer at the fountain, until the cleansing is complete. Oh may God send a deluge of holy fire that will burn out all dross, and purify the hearts of many who profess to be pure, but by their works deny it. How can the Holy Spirit reign supreme in hearts not utterly devoid of carnality and sensuality? The Word says: “To be carnally (or sensually) minded is death.” None should be forgetful of the fact that the all-scrutinizing eye of God searches out all that is hidden away in the secret chambers of the heart. And he surely does not overlook or make allowance for these things. Oh beloved ones, let us again remember that it is not what we profess to be, but what we are. The awful sin of sensuality has lain hidden in the hearts of some who profess to be wholly the children of God, and has been indulged in under the cloke of marriage until it is a wonder that God can longer look upon such a world of hypocrisy. Oh may God open blinded eyes and the holy fire burn until all who take upon them the name of saints, may depart from iniquity. Have these bodies of ours been cleansed and sanctified by God? Are these physical bodies indeed temples of the Holy Spirit? Then they should be regarded as such. God’s word says: “If any man defile the temple of God, him will God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” There is more than one way to defile these earthen temples. “Whatsoever is not of faith is sin.” Let every weight be lain aside, that we may run with patience the race that is set before us, and that we may be able to glorify God in our spirits and bodies which are his. The holy members of our bodies are not to be used as instruments of unrighteousness to the gratifying of carnality, but as instruments of righteousness to the glory of God. The way is straight and narrow. In Col. 3:17, and 1 Cor. 10:31 we learn just how to keep in the way, “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” “Whether therefore ye eat or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” Beloved, let us consider our high calling in Christ Jesus, and keep our garments unspotted from sin.

“Arise and shine, for thy light is come, and the glory of God is risen upon thee.” Paul said to Timothy: “Let no man despise thy youth, but be thou an example of the believers in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in PURITY.” Oh souls be up and doing, we have no time to lose.” The evening light has dawned upon us; we profess to be holy saints of God; the world is watching our every step; time is fast fleeting away; eternity is dawning nigh!

“Oh joyful day to the faithful soul,
Who walks with Christ in his purity,
Life’s battles fought, and our victory won,
We shout from time to eternity.”

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are PURE, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on these things.” Amen.

Your humble sister, washed in the blood of the Lamb,

Luella E. Byers.

__________

SEXUAL PURITY.

_____

SINCE the article by Sister Byers, on purity, touches on the above subject, it would be well and safe for us to say more on this subject. Indeed tor a long time we have felt the responsibility.

First, then we would lift up our voice as a trumpet, and warn every body in the name of Jesus to escape the Sodom sin of sexual intemperance. “Be temperate in all things,” is the law of the Lord.

Full salvation does not destroy natural affections nor any God created power, but it does destroy all the works of the devil, and brings all the divinely created functions and powers of the body, mind and soul under subjection to the law of holiness. Hence, says the apostle, “I keep under my body.” Not the body of sin; for that was destroyed, but he means the members and passions of the physical body. Not only is this scriptural, but it is the true philosophical life. The physical, to be subject to the mental and moral. And not the mind prostrated under the control of enflamed lusts of the flesh. Again we say to the young, flee youthful lusts, and to the married, live pure and temperate. Sexual intemperance is a crying sin in the sight of God. It breaks down the health, dwarfs the mind, and kills pure conjugal love. Hence it leads to coldness, domestic broils, discontent, dissolution and perdition.

But while this is true celibacy is not enjoined in the word of God as the means of escaping the evils that follow in the wake of the above abuses. Nor yet does the New Testament command abstinence save for the single object of procreation. Such a law would bind all under the same yoke, regardless of different physical conditions. But in this respect, the apostle says, “Every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.” — 1 Cor. 7:7. Abstinence is recom-

mended in this chapter for a time, in order to devote ourselves to fasting and prayer. But the desire for offspring is not refered to as the only lawful occasion of breaking the season of separation. See verse 3-5. While we believe that many can, and to the glory of God should stand fast in self denial, “having no occasion,” and especially when physical, conditions are such that perceptible harm follows. At the same time we must believe the wisdom of the inspired apostle is not to be ignored, and all men held to the rule that certain individuals find best for themselves.

But we cannot here fully expound this subject, and give the evil effects that have followed sexual excesses, and also the other extreme of a legal yoke of bondage taken upon persons by themselves, and not placed on them by the word of God. In the name of Jesus, we assure you that we have knowledge of the things concerning which we here write, and we warn all men and women to keep out of the traps of the devil on either side the narrow way. Abide in the word of God and you shall do well. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable, etc., that the man of God may be perfect.” In the name of Jesus, we say no person need go beyond the word of God in order to attain unto perfection.

We will simply add, “live in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.” The degree of abstinence required in the word of God, is not the result of putting yourself under an iron jacket vow, but it follows from a holy life in the Spirit. We used to vow many things in our ignorant zeal. But we have found out that these vows only bind the soul under legality, and expose the soul to snares of the devil. Vow, and covenant eternal loyalty to God, and leave all side vows out. Live holy every moment as it comes, and take no thought for the morrow. Amen.

THE PRAYER OF FAITH.

_____

Dear sufferers, get yourselves in the order of God, so you can touch the hem of his garment and believe he will heal you with his mighty power. Believe with an unwavering faith, without a doubt and the work will be done, for God cannot lie. He has it for the believer. If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established. — Isaiah 7:9. Be not afraid only believe. Jesus said unto him: If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. — Mark 9:23, 24. Lord I believe, help thou mine unbelief. Therefore I say unto you, what things soever ye desire when ye pray believe that ye receive them and ye shall have them. — Mark 11:24. But when Jesus heard he answered him saying: Fear not, believe only and she shall be made whole. Luke 8:50. May the Lord help the poor sick, weak ones; weak in the flesh, and weak in the Spirit, and weak in the faith. May He pour out a blessing from his unwasted fulness upon those poor afflicted bodies that they may be healed. May they hear the Spirit’s wooing after their freedom from being bound down with disease; set the captives free, give them health and strength to serve the true God in spirit and in truth.

As your faith is, so be it unto you who are calling for the prayers of the saints. The Lord has the power to fulfill all his holy will with the heavenly blessings.

Now the healing waters are being troubled, and the dark and cloudy day has past and the true light now shines, and ministering angels with the river of water of life, pouring out with such mighty power, as to awaken the slumbering. The great mercy of God is still over us, and yet we are in the world where their is pestilence, famine and war, earthquakes and fearful sights and disease, pain and sorrowing, drunkenness and all manner of sin, to break down His cause and kingdom.

James 5:16, “Confess your faults one to another and pray one for another that ye may be healed.” It may be there is a fault, that is a hindrance, if so confess the fault. Some who ask the prayers of the saints are not healed because they do not obey this scripture. I thank the Lord for healing me. And I give Him all the honor and glory and praise.

FINAL DOOM OF THE BEAST.

_____

GOG and Magog united will constitute the devil’s army in the last battle of the present ecclesiastical conflict. We are now just fighting the first battle. It shall end with victory on God’s side. Rev. 12:7-11.

This defeat will cause the devil to he very wrathful, and to wreak his vengeance upon the church, in a great flood of persecutions. V. 12:13-15. These persecutions, will, perhaps, come chiefly from the “image of the beast.” But the earth will help the woman, by swallowing up the flood of persecution. V. 16. Earth signifies the world or sinners. Satan’s defeat in this first battle will but increase his wrath, and he will make preparations for another battle. Rev. 12:17. He will then unite the two wings of his army, Gog and Magog, and besiege the camp of the saints. Rev. 20:8, 9. In another place we read that, “He gathered them together into a place, called in the Hebrew tongue, Armageddon.” Rev. 16:16. Some have supposed this term to signify some particular locality, which is not the case, forasmuch as the devil’s army shall at the same time encompass the camp of the saints, which extends over “the breadth of the earth,” Rev. 20:9.

Armageddon is a Hebrew word, from Megiddo, the name of a valley which was the scene of one of the greatest victories Israel ever won. Judges 4:1-24; 5:19. Israel was a type of the church. Hence it appears that Armageddon signifies a great triumph of the church. So the words, “He gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon,” seems to signify that the devil mustered his forces only to be defeated. This battle is called “the battle of that great day of God Almighty.” Rev. 16:14. These words signify that it will be the decisive battle of the war, and will end with the ushering in of the final judgment.

The church will receive no protection from the outside world at that time, for all the kings of the earth, and their armies, will be united with the beast against her. Rev. 16:14; 19:19. It seems that at that time all the powers of earth and hell will be united to exterminate the holy seed. But the gates of hell shall not prevail against Christ’s church. Matt. 16:18. The armies of heaven will be marshalled against them (Rev. 19:11-19), and the beast will be taken. V. 20. When the devil shall have the city of Zion besieged, ready to strike the fatal blow, fire will come from heaven to our rescue. Rev. 20:9. The fall of fire mentioned in this text signifies the coming of Christ. See 2 Thess. 1:7, 8; 2:8; Heb. 10:27.

The words, “Behold I come as a thief,” in connection with the prophecy of the gathering of the nations (Rev. 16:14-16), also signify that the battle with Gog and Magog will end with the Savior’s coming; when the beast, the false prophet, the devil and all his hosts, will be “cast into the lake of fire and brimstone.” Rev. 19:20; 20:10. “Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.” 2 Thess. 1:9.

Dear Brethren: I am grateful to have the privilege of testifying to the glory of God that he is my physician of soul and body. I am delighted to learn that some of the saints reside in or near Round Head, Hardin Co., O., and that there probably are hopes of having a grove meeting in that vicinity. I trust they will secure a meeting at that place soon, if the Lord wills,

Dear Saints: May our Father in heaven bless and keep you all filled with his Holy Spirit. I am saved thro’ Jesus blood. He has redeemed me and justified me; and then I was not satisfied and I went on to perfection, and through prayer and the laying on of hands I was wholly sanctified to the Lord, to do what the Lord has for me to do. I have perfect victory over sin, and give God the glory. I do praise God that he opened my eyes and heart to see the straight and narrow way and got me out of Babylon, and in the pure light of God’s word where God can use me to his glory. God bless you all. Amen.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I do praise God for full salvation and for sanctifying power in my soul. Oh praise his dear name. If the Lord wills, we will have a camp meeting again the 2d of Sept., near Spring Run. All who can, bring a tent, come and there will also be a boarding house on or near the grounds. We are praying the Lord to send Bro. Clayton, or whoever he wills. We expect a good meeting. The saints are few in number, but we have good attendance at our prayer meetings. Everybody invited. Address J. H. Ritter, Spring Run, Franklin Co., Pa.

Well, I am still saved and all on the altar, ready to do his will at all times. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I beg an interest in your prayers, that I may be kept saved, also pray that we may have a good meeting.

Dear Saints: I feel led to write my testimony. I have been receiving the testimonies of others through your welcome paper (the GOSPEL TRUMPET). I love to read it for it has put me on the track to pure holiness. I do not hear any preaching that does me so much good as reading the GOSPEL TRUMPET. When I go to prayer meetings I do not hear the true testimony of such saints as God requires us to have. It is pride and sect here, but bless the Lord,I am becoming dead to sectism. I thought I was right, but when I began getting your paper last spring I found I had only started. I found I needed to crucify the old man in the flesh. Oh it is so hard to get rid of this inbred foe, but praise the name of Jesus, I want to enjoy the fullness of his cleansing power. I am still holding this inward foe to the cross until Jesus will loose the bonds and set me free. The dear Lord has forgiven the sins that are past and I feel strengthened each day I live. I feel that I am all the Lord’s and he is mine, yet I am not satisfied to stop here. I want to go on to perfection. There are no holiness people here.

Your brother in Christ Jesus,

M. L. K. Smith.
