HIMSELF.

_____

“Himself hath Done it.”

_____

Once it was the blessing,
Now it is the Lord.
Once it was the feeling,
Now it is His Word.
Once his gifts I wanted,
Now Himself alone.
Once I sought for healing,
Now the Healer own.

Once ’twas painful trying,
Now ’tis perfect trust.
Once a half salvation,
Now the uttermost.
Ones ’twas ceaseless holding,
Now He holds me fast.
Once ’twas constant drifting,
Now my anchor’s cast.

Once ’twas busy planning,
Now ’tis trustful prayer.
Once ’twas anxious caring,
Now He has the care.
Once ’twas what I wanted,
Now what Jesus says.
Once ’twas constant asking,
Now ’tis ceaseless praise.

Once it was my working,
His it hence shall be.
Once I tried to use Him,
Now He uses me.
Once the power I wanted,
Now the Mighty One.
Once I worked for glory,
Now His will alone.

Once I hoped in Jesus,
Now I know he’s mine.
Once my lamps were dying,
Now they brightly shine.
Once for death I waited,
Now his coming hail;
And my hopes are anchored
Safe within the veil.

TRIALS.

_____

My brethren, count it all joy when you full into divers temptatious, knowing this that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may by perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

SOMETIMES we pray for God to increase our souls and give us a deeper experience, and the Lord answers our prayers by turning the devil loose on us, and gives us a few good trials. What is this for, and what does it accomplish? The trying of your faith worketh patience; and Paul says, Rom. 5:4. “Patience worketh experience.’’ Some are always wishing for the experience of someone else; instead of doing this, let us endure patiently a few fiery trials and tribulations and our souls will begin to increase and our experience will become more precious every day.

How should we endure these trials? By grumbling and complaining about these things the Spirit of God is grieved and we get no benefit. But James says, “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into divers temptations.” Obey this and you will find a rich increase in your experience. But one says, “I have such peculiar trials,” and, “No one knows what I suffer and what I have to endure and go through.”

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man, but God is faithful who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” 1 Cor. 10:13. Let us remember that others have trials too and instead of repining and grieving over our own surroundings and trials, let us pray for others and ask God to help us to encourage others by our pleasant smiles and kind words, remembering that he is faithful who has promised, casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you. Not only do others suffer trials as well as we, but Jesus, when he was here, suffered in all points like as we, yet without sin, and he knows how to succor those who are tempted.

But one says, “Well, I have one trial right after another and I do not understand why God should permit it to be so.” Let patience have her perfect work. Perhaps God is perfecting your patience, or it may be that he is preparing you for something in the future; so think it not strange co..ning the fiery trials which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you, out rejoice inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings.

“Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time. Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations.” 1 Pet. 1:5, 6. It is really neccessary for us to be tried and tested at times, and we do not always understand it just at the time, but if we hold still and let God work it out, we will find, as Paul says, that our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Praise the Lord! Let us read some more about these precious trials. 1 Pet. 1:7. — “That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.” Let us no longer regard trials as something to be dreaded and feared, but learn the value and benefit of them when patiently endured and appreciate them as planned or permitted by God’s own loving hand, for our own special benefit, and remember that all things work together for good to those who love God. “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation, for when he is tried he shall receive a crown of life which the Lord has promised to them that love him.” James 1:12.

THE WAGES OF SIN.

_____

Rom. 6:23. — The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life. I wonder how many there are who can realize this as being true? I do praise God for the real knowledge I have this morning of my acceptance with God, and that I know the gift of God is eternal life.

After reading Bro. Byrum’s article on the Mission Home in Chicago, and also seeing a little of such terrible life myself, I can realize more what Paul meant by Rom. 6:23. The wages of sin is death. There are many dear souls who, when taking their first step into sin, do not realize its awful wages, for the enemy of their soul is very deceiving and promises great pleasure and enjoyment; but in place of that, it is sorrow, degradation and death. In John 8:44, we read that the devil is a liar and the father of lies, so we could not expect him to do as he agrees, or to help us out of any trouble which he has succeeded in getting us into.

There are so many ways in which he works upon the hearts of the young to destroy the good which God has planted there. First, are the little neighborhood parties, socials, Christmas cantatas and New Years’ feasts, which some think to be very harmless; but certainly these create a desire in the heart for worldly amusements and society, then they become lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God. 2 Tim. 3:4. And are next led into card playing and dancing which are very hurtful and degrading to one.

Next is disobedience to parents, 2 Tim. 3:2, which will lead its victims to bring much sorrow to their parents by doing those things which are entirely contrary’ to their wishes. Continually the heart is being filled with vanity, pride of the eye, and lust of the flesh, until at last after meeting perhaps with many misfortunes in life, which they feel have brought disgrace to them, the young woman or man, as the case may be, becomes completely discouraged, and as they are not acquainted with Jesus, the one who is able to save and make happy and pure, they many times give themselves over entirely to the adversary of their soul. May God help such ones for Jesus’ sake to find the loving Savior.

If dear ones would only stop and think of the wages of sin when taking their first downward step there would not be so many in the penitentiaries and asylums, nor would there be so many in the slums of the cities to rescue. I pray that young people may take warning and give their hearts to God in their youth; for youth is the time to serve the Lord. Eccl. 12:1. — Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth.

Oh, dear young friends, you who have Christian mothers, do not treat them as though they were a servant, or some one who has no right to enquire about your affairs, for you cannot fully understand the tender feelings the mother has for you, but remember that if they are God’s children they will never advise you wrong. They are older than you and have had much more experience in life, therefore are able to give you good advice and warn you against the devil’s snares.

You will not always have your parents to advise and offer up their petitions to God for you. My only regret is that I did not take a mother’s advice and give my heart to God long before I did. And to you, dear parents, who do not seem to realize when you are allowing your little ones to partake of those innocent amusements (as some call them), which are feeding the mind with worldly things and giving place to the devil, God’s word commands us in Eph. 4:27, to give no place to the devil. This is meant for all God’s children. Is it not giving place to the devil to allow your children to go to places where you could not be justified in going. God help you to see that you will be held responsible for the way in which you govern your family; better take more time in your home to teach them the ways of salvation, and if you do it in the fear and love of God it, will be a pleasure to them and of much help to yourself, and may be the means of saving their soul. If you feel you need knowledge or wisdom, ask of God who giveth liberally to all men. Jas. 1:5. Pray earnestly that God may bless your efforts and accomplish that which you cannot do — for eternal life is the gift of God.

THERE IS PARDON FOR ALL.

What joy it brings to the soul to know that even after one has reaped the wages of sin, and lived for years in the devil’s kingdom, as it were, that still God offers you mercy; God is slow to anger and plenteous in mercy. But, dear ones, it is for you to choose life or death, which will it be? May you ask yourselves this question and decide before it be too late, for the Spirit of God will not always strive with man.

God is continually calling you to leave the rough and sinful way? Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him and sup with him, and he with me. Rev. 3:20. He also tells us that his yoke is easy and his burden is light. Mat. 11:30. Then why need we go around all pressed down with burdens when Jesus has borne them all for us once? Praise his precious name!

Grace E. Stratton.

SIN IN TWO POEMS-INBRED AND ACTUAL.

THIS inherited, inbred, or carnal sin is caused by the transgression of Adam and Eve disobeying God by eating the forbidden fruit, sowing the poisonous seed of sin in the soul. In the innocent child, it is visible, showing itself in anger, envy, etc., but not knowing good from evil, therefore not held responsible for that sin. When I was a child, I thought, understood, and spake as a child; when I became a man I put away childish things. Through the teaching of the word of God and the Spirit, we learn good from evil, therefore become responsible for obeying or disobeying him. And if disobeyed then it becomes actual sin; we become transgressors and aliens, and guilty, doomed to eternal punishment. Nothing can redeem us, but a sacrifice, and that of blood, the precious blood of Christ, the Son of God. We must comprehend our sins, feel a godly sorrow and repent. By his intercession and sacrifice of himself he atones for us; thereby through repentance our sins are washed away and we become the children of God, Christ our elder brother, and we are an heir to the kingdom.

Oh what a wondrous redemption, what a glorious transformation! No wonder Jesus said to the disciples, “Rejoice not that the devils are subject unto you, but rejoice that your names are written in the book of life.” And as we have been dead in sin, now we are alive unto God, born children of God alive and active, growing in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ; not into it, but growing therein.

And what about the carnality or inbred sin? We well know that it still exists after conversion. We can see in the Old Testament, the shadow of things to come, when God brought the children of Israel through the Red Sea, made it possible for them to go up and possess the goodly land in forty days; but through their unbelief and murmuring, they wandered forty years before they crossed Jordan to possess the promised land, where by faith in God he fought their battles and overcome their enemies. We can see it in the disciples in Christ’s time, by their unfaithfulness, fearfulness, and disputing who was to be the greatest, and lack of faith, prayer, and fasting for casting out devils, needed reproof of Christ for their unbelief and little faith. But forty days after Christ’s ascension when they were assembled in Jerusalem with one accord, waiting for the promise, there came such an outpouring of the Holy Spirit and of fire, they were cleansed and purified, and instead of carnality were filled with power. They were not to repent of carnality, but to present themselves body, soul and spirit a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable which was their reasonable service. “For ye are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God,” “Nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh is by faith in the Son of God.” They were dead to sin.

The promises of God are reliable. His arm is not shortened, his grace is sufficient to forgive our sins, cleanse us from carnality and heal our bodies. I have tested and tasted. This blessed Bible is my guide and my discipline. I belong no more to any church denomination or sect. Whereas there is among you envying, strife and divisions, are ye not carnal? While one saith, I am of Paul, and another I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed? 1 Cor 3:3-5.

“You say I am of Paul and I of Apollos. Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?” “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together.” 1 Cor. 1:10, 12, 13. But I remain and am a sister to every true child of God, while I am a child of his. “Have come to the general assembly and church of the firstborn which are written in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, and to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant.” Heb. 12:22, 24. Your sister in Christ,

Ella L. Keck.

OPEN DOOR MISSION.

_____

396, Dearborn St., Chicago, Ill.

Dear Brethren: We are praising God for victory over the flesh, world, and the devil, and for a salvation that we feel so deep in our souls. God of heaven is on our side and we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. Glory! It is only the power of God that can keep us in this wicked place. We have learned to say with the poet, “Anywhere with Jesus I can safely go.” It is a wonder that God does not rain fire and brimstone down on this terrible wicked place. Oh how we do appreciate our salvation as we look at the men and women around us dyed in the deepest kind of sin that can be imagined, and then see what the Lord has done for us!

Well, dear ones, our home is a monument of what God can do for those who put their trust in him. There was a piece in the Trumpet telling our need of furniture, and praise the Lord for answering prayer. Last week a dear brother was led here by the Spirit of God to the home, and before he left God put it into his heart to supply us with all the furniture necessary to furnish the home complete. Help us to praise God for his goodness.

The dear Lord is giving us souls each day for our hire and many are convinced of the truth. Our mission has been crowded to its utmost capacity each night with poor hungry, discouraged, foot-sore, down-hearted men who are thousands of miles from home and family, and are in Chicago through misfortune and are penniless, and compelled to stay all night in the mission. We pack men in the mission like sardine in a box. It is the most touching scene ever witnessed.

Among these men are some most remarkable cases. Men who less than a year ago was worth $80,000 now board with us at the mission for nothing and sleep on the floor. We have lately one of the most remarkable cases of conversion on record. Interest is growing in our meetings and we are becoming a wonder to the professing world. We dispose of a great many tracts and Trumpets, and will a great many more this summer. Bro. Palmer and wife have been here helping in the work about four weeks, also Bro. Radebaugh and others.

The Lord has wonderfully lead Bro. C. Manning to permanently assist in running the home. We are kept busy from early morn until ten and eleven o’clock each night, but Jesus is our strength and our fortress. The Lord has given us a horse and har-

We, in the name of Jesus, earnestly invite all saints and seekers after truth and light and full salvation or healing of sickness, of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and California to attend this glorious feast, and let as many as can come prepared to take care of themselves, do so, especially in tents and bedding, and let all the saints who live near, do all you can in furnishing camp supplies of all kinds. We are greatly in need of some more means to send for the needed workers. Let all the dear saints everywhere pray for the success of this meeting. We expect this meeting to be largely attended. Bro. F. N. Jacobson and Co. of workers will be there. We also expect two or three other companies of workers. Let all who wish to rent tents to live in during the meeting, write to us in good time, so we can furnish the same. All workers will be cared for: also the poor.

GRAND JUNCTION CAMP MEETING, JUNE 11-20.

The time for this meeting is now near at hand, and many who have been anxiously awaiting the time, are already flocking in, and for some time the meetings have been held almost every night. Souls are being saved, devils cast out and quite a number have already been healed. We expect a glorious camp meeeting this year, and a great advancement in the graces of the Spirit and power of God among the believers.

Sunday, June 16, will be a day set apart for fasting and prayer, and we trust those who cannot be present will also, wherever you are, throughout the land, observe the same, and unite your prayer of faith with us for the advancement of the work, and that souls may be delivered from the powers of Satan, saved and healed. In this way, you can all get a benefit, even if you are not permitted to be in attendance. And if any cannot come, and are in need of spiritual help, put in your case before the Lord on that day for just what you need, and we will let our faith be united in your behalf. Let that be a day of sinking down into the will of God.

Those coming to the camp, should, if possible, bring bedding and be prepared to take care of themselves as much as possible, and try to help some one else, as there will, no doubt, be great numbers to care for. But no one need stay away because they are poor, for such are especially invited if they are seeking light and truth. Dead-beats and loafers, who come only for the “loaves and fishes,” to sponge their living, will find a hot place on account of the fire of the Holy Spirit.

Rates have been procured over nearly all the railroads in Michigan, also throughout the Central, Eastern and Southern states, as stated in supplement a short time ago. The Rock Island and Chicago & Alton roads have given rates in Illinois, the same as the Central Traffic Ass’n. Rates were applied for over other Western lines, but as yet we have not heard their decision.

__________

CLOSE COMMUNION.

_____

We have a letter from a dear brother in the South, stating that certain parties are disturbing the peace and unity of the Spirit by a contentious agitation of rigid close communion; forbidding any member of a sect to participate in the Lord’s supper, and also repelling brethren who do not receive their

strenuous notions. We are asked to give the Scriptural order in this matter.

First, we would say, the Lord’s supper is the “communion of the body of Christ,” hence no one outside is entitled to it. 1 Cor. 11:16.

Second, the line cannot be draw by the simple fact of membership with, or freedom from sect. Because there are honest and sincere souls yet in Babylon who have not sufficiently heard or comprehended the truth respecting the church of God and the counterfeits, to come out, and are yet loved of God, and entitled to his ordinances. Whereas on the other hand, there are hypocrites whom God hates, and who are wholly unfit to participate, whom the devil is trying to have hang on among the saints. The fine cannot, therefore, be drawn on outside stakes “Judge not from appearances, but judge righteous judgment.”

Third, the Scriptures require all persons to judge themselves as to whether they are fit to take part in the ordinances of Christ. 1 Cor, 11-28.

Fourth, but if any are unscrupulous and will attempt to impose themselves on the church, whose participation would bring reproach on the cause, the word of God intimates that such will have to be judged by some one else. “For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.” Ver. 31. That is, would not need to be judged by God’s ministers, elders, etc.

Fifth, we are not close communion in the sense that term is used in Babylon; namely, “Every one not believing as we do shall not break bread with us.” But we are close communion in the sense of having close communion with God. And so much so that hypocrites and heretics, who are such at heart, will not presume to pass themselves as children of God in our presence. In our travels and experience, it has been a very rare thing for sectarians to approach the Lord’s table, though we always invite every real child of God. In fact, we do not recollect of a single case, since we stand in the present truth. But on one occasion we knew of a party who was out of the sect, and out of the body of Christ, in whom we perceived brass enough to take the sacred elements; and the Lord made it our duty to inform her before-hand that she had no part nor lot in the matter, and if she came forward we should have to pass her by. On another occasion an ungodly, beastly spirit was seated ready to “feast himself without fear.” Whom we know, if we permitted him to do so, would be a “spot on our feast of love.” We looked to the Lord for the guidance of the Spirit, and were led to explain 1 Cor. 11:31. Which we did, showing that men should honestly examine their own hearts, but if a corrupt heart attempts to dissemble before God, it was the duty of God’s ministers to judge their case for them. The man, expecting soon to be pointed out, arose and muttering, withdrew; no one having applied the Word to his case but his own guilty conscience.

There need be no contention over the question of close or open communion. But rather “strive together for the unity of the faith,” and be so filled with the fight and power of God, that “of the rest no man durst join himself to us.” No person outside the body of Christ, whether in of out of sectism. And should any one have presumption enough to do so, we have the grace and authority of the Holy Spirit to point them out. And all evil, subverted spirits will keep their distance when this is known.

BE TRUE TO GOD.

Coldwater, Mich.

Dear Saints of God: As the time draws nigh for the coming camp meeting, my thoughts go back to those early morning meetings that we held at the Trumpet Home last spring for a week or so previous to the coming together of the saints for the general meeting. We met and

Page 3

some consecrated in those meetings for some of the special gifts of the Spirit, and for some time the Lord has seemed leading me to tell you through the GOSPEL TRUMPET something of my own experience and results from those meetings.

Previous to this time I had often felt that God could be pleased to give me the gift of wisdom, as many, many times I had been hours on my face before God, to instruct me in righteousness, so that I might be able to rightly teach the perishing souls around me. And in one of those meetings I consecrated for this gift, and that my present gift of faith should be increased. While the brethren were examining my consecration, Bro. Byrum asked me if God should desire me to teach his Word before any of the brethren as well, would I do it? I replied, I would; but the thought, that surely he would never ask that of me, was in my heart, I thought he would only want me in the place where there was no better instrument present that he could use for their good, and I fear there was not a real willingness in my heart to be used under those circumstances.

I returned home from those precious feasts, strengthened in the Lord, but when God’s Spirit did move upon me for any public service, the enemy came against me so powerfully, it seemed as if a weight that I could not resist was holding me back and causing me to shrink from those duties. I was willing to be used all for the Lord, but such a hesitancy and drawing back from personal public work, I would feel bad and grieved over it, and it did seem as if sometimes that I should never be an overcomer. In earnestness I asked God one day to show me just my condition and standing as he saw me.

The next morning he answered my request by this little simple vision. As I opened one door and had passed into the next room. I saw just before me a bright jewel, glittering so that I could scarcely look upon it; then I saw a dean brush pile and the jewel sparkling underneath. I put out my hand to take it, and the brush would rattle down and hide it away. I never thought of what I had asked of God the day before, but I said, “Lord, show’ me what this is!” He reminded me of how I had asked him to show me myself, and said, “The jewel is your heart, pure and clean through the blood of Christ, but when I go to put my hand upon you for service you draw back like the jewel hidden under the brush pile.” Still again, I asked Father to be patient with me, and bear with me a little longer, and believed I had victory over it. But my next failure was in not obeying in the reading of God’s word in a meeting soon after this, and then every time as the testings came they seemed harder and harder; and finally, a very dear friend told me one day as we were talking about the gifts of the Spirit (and she professes a sanctified life) that she believed me out of the order of God, to believe for these gifts for myself, as God would not honor me with any, on account of my companion being alive, I not being “a widow indeed.” So altogether the enemy got me still more inactive on these lines of advancement, until I saw so clearly that unless I held on “to that whereunto I had already attained,” and pressed forward, against every opposition, that my soul should soon be starving for the bread of life.

Now by the grace of God, it is settled forever in my heart, and in heaven, to do anything that the Lord makes known to me as his will. He can hide me away better than I could hide myself, and yet Jesus will not through it, be hid by not being able to manifest his life through this body, which is the temple of the living God.

I know of no words that can praise God sufficiently for his patience with me; and as I follow on with the Master, I count the service of Jesus as the truest freedom. Through the grace … ..d by faith, by courage, by watchfulness, and earnest importuning, I have the victory over all the temptations and works of the evil one with which he has tried mightily to get me to dishonor God, and to lose my own salvation. To God be all the glory. Amen. Your humble sister,

Nina Smith.

CROTHERSVILLE ASSEMBLY MEETING.

_____

Hayden, Ind., May 30, 1895.

Dear Brethren: We are glad to say that the Lord Jehovah was in our midst, and our souls were made happy as we served him in Spirit and in truth. We were much strengthened and built up as the Word went forth. We believe the saints were much strengthened. There were several consecrations during the meeting. Several saints came from the different localities. Sunday afternoon, our souls were made happy while we partook of the ordinances of the Lord’s house. “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” The ministers present were A. J. Kilpatrick, J. N. Howard, Wm. Schrieber and T. E. Ellis. Yours in Him,

Dearly Beloved: We are still in the service of the Master, and the Lord is using us to his glory in spreading the glad tidings of salvation. A little over two weeks ago, we began meetings in the Hillegas school- house, and they were well attended; but on account of the short evenings, there was not much chance for anything but seed-sowing. We gave them the truth on the evening light. They had never heard much on that line. The truth was well received, and some that had in time past been somewhat mixed up, got clear for the Lord. The meeting closed Sunday last with an ordinance meeting. Nine were buried with Christ in baptism. Twenty-nine took part in commemorating the death of our Lord by the ordinances of the Lord’s supper, and washing the saint’s feet. We had a very blessed meeting. Quite a number testified that it was their first opportunity of partaking of the ordinances of God’s house. Bro. Sheldon was with us over Sunday, and was used of the Lord in preaching the Word and baptizing. We began meeting here, three miles from Charlevoix in the town hall, Monday evening. Will continue as long as the Lord wills.

Dear Saints of God: We have been here a few weeks gleaning souls for God. When Bro. Sam Alexander and I came, we did not know one here who accepts the truth. We came in the name of the Lord expecting to open the work by supporting it ourselves, but our precious heavenly Father opened the way before us, which he told us before we came. Praise God! The first week we spent going to mission and other meetings, especially the Free Methodists, only to find opposition to the truth. Finally we found a few who were meeting as saints, but the preacher was using tobacco, etc. Of course, he could not stand the truth. Some honest souls who were mixed up found themselves away from God and accepted the admonition, and moved out for God and cleared up their experience; but some who were making the loudest profession rejected the straight way, being exalted in themselves. God pity them. Bro. A. M. Bixler and wife and Eva have been here two weeks helping, and the work has been moving on gloriously and some souls saved. Praise God! We have a hall 604, Ottowa St., and one in north Grand Rapids near the D. and M. Junction. Some calls are coming in from the country for meetings. We have rented rooms 498, Ottowa St. and the saints have helped furnish us with things for housekeeping and we are happily situated for the work; only we could do with other neccessaries in the way of furniture, bedding and provisions if the Lord leads any one that way. Any going to camp meeting can spend a few days for God, if the Lord leads. The street car line runs from all the depots to our house for five cents. We have the powers of darkness to meet and are asking God to supply neccessaries to carry on the work here.

Dear Trumpet Family: I praise the Lord for salvation this morning. I believe it will please God for me to tell you what he has done for my boy that was hurt. You saw his request for prayer in the Trumpet. We had lands laid on him Sunday, and Monday he walked for the first time in six months without, his crutches, and Tuesday he walked eight blocks. Praise the dear Lord forever! Will you please send some SHINING LIGHTS so we can have them by next Sabbath? I am praying the Lord to furnish the means. From your sister in Christ,

Dear Saints: The Lord saves and keeps me from all sin, and sanctifies me wholly. Praise his name forever! “He that committeth sin is of the devil. Whosoever is born of God, doth not commit sin.” I praise God for a free salvation. The Lord keeps me free from all sinful ways of the world. He has taken away the appetite for tobacco, tea and coffee, and more than that, he took the liquor habit away. He gives me power over all the works of Satan. Praise the Lord! Dear Trumpet Readers: By the help of the Lord I will write my testimony to the Trumpet for the first time. Oh I thank God that he has kept me so wonderfully saved! I am so glad that salvation is free for every body. It is such a simple way if we just believe and repent, and the Lord will hear us. Over one year ago I was saved, but afterward fell into sin till about four weeks ago I was willing to give up all for Jesus. I found rest to my soul, and since I have been happy in the Lord. I ask all the children of God to pray for me.

Woodburn, Ore.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I feel it would be glory to God for me to write some of my past experience of when the Lord our God called me into his vineyard to preach his word. Hope it may be a help to some precious souls who have had similar calls. About two years ago the eighth of last January, while deep in sin, the dear Lord picked me up and gloriously saved my soul. Glory be to his precious name! Soon after I was led to plunge into the fountain and be made perfectly whole, which still increased the glory in my soul. I then had not the light upon the oneness of God’s children and was captured in W. B. ism with many others. But God had mercy on us for our trueness to him and on the following October sent our dearly beloved Bro. Jacobson and Co. to us with the everlasting, gospel in all its fullness, and present truth, and we accepted it and come home to Zion. Glory to God! I love my home.

Well I often felt that sometime the dear Lord would call on me to “blow the trumpet in Zion,” but I did not want it to come upon me for I felt too weak, and often in meeting I would be really afraid to trust God, for fear he would put it upon me. But finally I got entirely rid of it. Then the Lord led me out to “seek earnestly the best gifts,” for which I would to God all the dear saints everywhere would seek more earnestly, as they are so needed in the church in these last days. Well I began to double my time of secret prayer and would so earnestly plead to God for a more complete settling down and increasing of faith and every grace in my soul. I felt they must come by trueness to God, and as he says, “By prayer and thanksgiving let your requests be made, known unto God. Phil. 4:6. And oh! I could realize day by day the sweet rays of glory streaming in my soul. Glory be to God! how he did multiply every grace until the twelfth day of last August, when we were all assembled together praising God in one accord, I felt all at once, as it were, a mighty voice speak to my soul that I must go out to preach the Word. Indeed it was a shock to me; so that I spoke right out, “My Lord, I cannot do that,” as I felt my weakness and slowness of speech, and being hard to understand. Besides, I had a good fruit farm which I felt I could not leave. I had just consecrated to give all above a living to the Lord, and in my eyes I thought it was enough. So I commenced pleading to the Lord to let me off, and it was about two long hours before I would give up. Dear readers, no one but our God knows what I suffered in replying against him. I fell twice under the power of God, while pleading to him to relieve me of the solemn charge. I realized twice he closed my mouth, but the last time it was a painful experience to me. The power of God came down so upon me that I thought I could not stand it. Every joint in me seemed to pain me, so I got alarmed and plead for relief, and it seemed for a few moments I went away to the dear Lord. Oh how I could feel his presence around me! And I whispered to him, “My Lord, I cannot go, I am too weak.” And oh! I heard him say so plain to me, “But you must go.” Then glory to God I got victory and got up and Confessed to the dear saints. Oh what a relief it was to my poor soul.

But then, the next day the enemy got to tempting me, trying to make me believe the Lord would let me off yet; for I did not feel any different from what I did the week before. (Just the way the devil always comes around on our feelings.) Yet, I was most willing to yield the least impression that the Lord would relieve me. So I had to suffer through another bitter experience nearly a week; until finally I was made to realize if I did not obey, I would lose my soul. So I said, “With all my heart, Lord, I will go.” Praise the Lord! How sweet his will is when we are obedient children!

I am young, and need your prayers that I may keep humble and true. You whom the Lord is calling out to preach his Word, first, be sure that the LORD has called you; then dear ones, be sure to obey. Move right out for him. He will qualify you; for all his promises are for you. I find him a present help in every time of need. And you, dear ones, who are not called out, the Lord has more for you to do than just keep the victory at home. Keep looking down into your hearts and consecrations continually and see if the dear Lord does not want you to do more for the spread of the pure gospel, especially in the West. So many here are so earnestly calling for the pure gospel, that are going down in sectish night, and we cannot fill all the calls. While others feel moved of God to the West, but the Lord’s means are withheld somewhere. Oh dear ones, everywhere, search deep in your consecrations and see if you cannot do more to spread the gospel in the West. We are the only company in Oregon. Now if any one feels led at any time this summer to help get laborers to the coast, send your freewill offering to Bro. Wm. Snaveley, at Woodburn, Ore., and he will send it to some company the Lord is calling to the West. I know the Lord will bless you in this, no matter how little you are able to do. We also need your constant prayers for the work, that our God may make us more useful in wielding the mighty sceptre of truth, and doing a thorough work for our God. Yours in company with Bro. J. L. Green, fully saved and sanctified and kept,

Jas. B. Peterman.

KENNEDY. — Bro. John Kennedy was born Nov. 23, 1872; died March 1, 1895. He was taken sick the last of June with consumption. Soon after his affliction came upon him he gave his heart to the Lord, and as he believed the word of God, he laid aside his medicine, for he felt it was making him worse; he called for the elders to anoint him according to James 5:14. The Spirit of the Lord showed them that his life was short in, this world. Many prayers went up to God that he might bear his sufferings with patience. He would tell those that came to see him, he was ready to go when the Lord would call, and said he was going to a better world than this. He leaves a father, mother, one sister and three brothers. May the dear Lord keep those that are saved faithful till death, and save those that are lost, that they may be an unbroken family in heaven. Funeral services by

HILLEGAS. — Died in Eveline township, Charlevoix Co., Mich., George Hillegas, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Hillegas. He was born March 22, 1876; died May 26, 1895; aged nineteen years, two months and four days. A little over two weeks ago we commenced meeting in the neighborhood where this young man lived, and he came to the meeting several nights, until he was taken sick with Typhoid Pneumonia. He was very seriously sick and lost his mind right away; but through earnest prayer to God his mind was restored, and the first rational thing he said was to ask for a preacher to pray with him. They sent for us and we went and prayed for him and had the glorious satisfaction of seeing him soundly converted to God. We were there once after and prayed with him, and he told us that whether he lived or died he was the Lord’s. Sunday morning Sister Gardener went over and sang several pieces for him, and when she sang “My sins are all taken away,” he joined in the chorus, and told his brother that sat by him, he wished he could say that. The deceased leaves a father and mother, several brothers and two sisters, and many friends to mourn their loss. And truly their grief would have been almost unbearable, had it not been for the consolation that he was saved. May the Lord bless the dear bereaved ones and draw their hearts to himself, that they may be an unbroken family around the throne of God in heaven, is our earnest prayer. Startling News to Mothers!

_____

MOTHERS, if you had your suspicions aroused that your sons were tampering with the wine cup, and thus taking the first steps in the course which at the last “biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder,” you would have cause to shudder; but it is the mission of this little tract to open unsuspecting eyes to even a more alarming danger than the drunkard’s doom, by which your darling boy may be ensnared by Satan. Its danger lies in the subtle and secret character, as well, as its fearful consequences to both body and soul.

Please read patiently, and with forbearance the sad, but true narrative of the writer’s own early life, which you may well judge is written from no other motive than an honest desire to be a danger signal to other, new crafts just launching out, and if he can thereby be the means of saving one such, it will make repair for the waste of so much of his life.

Why I address this, to mothers is due, perhaps, to the remembrance of something that occured when I could not have been more than six years old. I had been playing with bad boys older than myself, who taught me my first lesson in secret vice; affirming that I would die if I did not learn. My child-like innocence may be seen in the fact that I went to my mother and told her what I had seen and heard. Instead of a few warning words being spoken then and there by the one I believed in above all others, I was only put off by silence. And so by a little further contact with evil companions, the chords began to wind around its young and tender victim, and afterwards the chains of this fearful habit of vainly seeking to gratify carnal lusts by an improper use of the hands.

Then began an awful struggle which had to be carried on unknown and unsympathized with for many weary years until the age of twenty-one was reached, when, instead of being one of the “strong young men” spoken of in John’s epistle, this unfortunate one cast himself helpless and forlorn into the arms of the Savior, who came “to heal the brokenhearted, and to preach deliverance to the captives; to set at liberty them that are bruised.” Did I not seek the help of Christ before? Yes, many times, but although the divine Helper was faithful, I did not do my part in being firm, and so like a poor ship-wrecked mariner, trying to climb some wet and slippery wall of rock, getting a little length above, would be caught and dashed down again by an angry wave, and this being repeated until all strength being spent, he would sink beneath the dark waters, never to rise more.

A HIDDEN FOE.

I was truly converted when about fourteen years of age, and did well for a year or so, but this habit still got the mastery at times, and finally was the means of my downfall from grace. Oh those years of struggling which followed! How many, many resolves were made, only to be broken, and to Indulge still deeper in the practice that was draining the life blood of its votary! Loss of vitality created a craving for stimulants, and the tobacco habit was formed, and later on, strong drink was added to the category of sin. My physical state being so run down, and my will power so weakened, I soon became almost a confirmed drunkard, disgracing my dear old parents, and causing their gray hairs to increase with sorrow, who bore it all so patiently, never speaking any but gentle words to me through it all. Just here may I suggest that possibly in many cases besides my own, has the bottle had to stand the brunt of all the blame for sorrow, misery and wreck of life, when perhaps, were it known, another hidden foe has been the real destroyer.

OTHER BINDING CHAINS.

At the age of nineteen, I was entrusted with a responsible position in business, and during six months continued, fairly steeping myself in liquor, being under the foolish delusion that by binding myself with this chain I would escape from the other. While thus debauching, of course it must lead to the neglect of duty, and I was discharged for drunkenness.

Upon returning home from such a cause, the shame of it spurred me to a desperate and final resolve, and I then determined to renounce forever all bad habits and be a man. For two months that fall I did nobly, taking long rambles in the country, and was gaining rapidly in body, and began to cherish the thought that I had now thrown off the yoke. But alas! just when I thought I was strong, the crash came, and I was again nearly in despair from my old enemy.

STILL DEEPER IN SIN.

I then burned to get away from home restraint where I would be free to plunge into the full indulgence of all my passions. This opportunity was soon afforded me, and I took employment in a city, and there my feet at once commenced to go in that dark way, against the warning of the wise man who said in the book of Proverbs, “Go not astray in her paths, for she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her. Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.” Here again, my reason for resorting to the house of the harlot was with the hope of finding in this resort a means of aid in breaking from my slavery. I can sincerely thank God that I felt his restraining hand so far that I never attempted to drag down the unsullied; although it was bad enough to push further those poor, unfortunate ones who had fallen, and were fast sinking down beyond hope. But different to my expectation of help from this quarter, was I rewarded. After running a short course in this way, I was taken hold of by the loathsome disease which: attends such a course, and then I was indeed in trouble. Who would be my help in such a plight? “Then called I upon the Lord.” “This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.” felt fully that I was hopeless and helpless of myself, and was ready then to forego every subterfuge, and to look only fo the “Lamb of God,” and if he would save me, to be his forever. The one who said, “Him that cometh unto me, I will in no wise cast out,” was faithful even to ray desperate case, and from that moment commenced my restoration by the seal of the blessed Spirit being set upon me, witnessing that I was a child of God.

DIVINE HELP SOUGHT.

Was my struggling all over now? Oh no! I had to struggle on for years, and gain my own victories, until I had finally conquered; my Savior being ready to supply help whenever I was at the point of failing at any time. He would not suffer me to be tempted above that I was able, but with the temptation also made a way to escape, that I might be able to bear it. Sometimes I even fell, but always to rise immediately by applying to the blood of cleansing, and to rely more fully upon his strength, which is “made perfect in weakness.” It would have stood me good service had I understood the blessed truth of entire sanctification then as I do now; that the God of peace “sanctifies wholly,” “Spirit and soul and body,” and that thus the power of any evil habit in the flesh is broken, which may be striving to regain its sway in our bodies. I can now thankfully say, through the grace of God, that the viper has surely been slain, and I am set free; but Oh, to look at the ruin of years! While fighting with this enemy, what might I have accomplished with the strength thus worse than wasted! Now, at my present point of life, I might have been issuing forth as a strong man equipped for his life work, instead of what I am, if I had escaped the sting of sin.

There is still another dark passage in my history. Having become engaged to a beautiful and highly talented woman, and having bright anticipations with regard to our future, it afterwards bore upon my mind that constitutionally I was not fitted for the responsibilities of a husband and father, and so I was moved to bring about a break, and thus another tender heart was crushed and made to bleed.

A LESSON TO THOSE WHO NEED IT.

And now my story is ended, and it only remains for me to meet the charge that the pure minded who take up my tract to read, will by such a perusal be nothing benefited, if not the contrary by my pains. What useful end is gained by the reherasing of such a round of sin? In reply, let me remind my readers of the point of my mission which I desire to have burnt into every mother’s heart: — A mother’s word at the proper time might have saved all the sin, sorrow and shame which has here been recounted. And the suggestion is, that parents will not fail to inform themselves with regard to this vice, and putting aside all false modesty, warn their sons while they are yet young and confidential. In this day of wickedness, boys can scarcely escape contact with such evil companions as will entice them into this vice, and being ignorant of the terrible danger, may easily fall a prey before its awful power. Christian people should awake to the rescue with all the energy that would be put forth, could these fiery serpents be openly seen doing their deadly work. During my whole career, there were only two who warned me of my danger; one being an elderly gentleman who merely hinted about it, and that in the presence of others; and the other a young man who took a walk with me for the purpose of introducing the subject by confessing that the habit had nearly overthrown him, but that he got the check on just in time, and he felt deeply for others whom he saw in danger. His brotherly words were as a cordial to my troubled heart, for I had then begun to feel the slavery, and if I had had strength sufficient, I would then have broken the yoke, so much was I impressed by the information imparted.

THE SIGNS FOLLOW THE PRACTICE.

Those addicted to this habit may be detected by any who make the matter a little study. This, in itself, ought to be enough to induce a boy to quit it — to be aware that doctors and some others can tell by certain signs what he has been doing in secret. Let all who love the youth of our land, (and especially does the call come to God’s people,) rally to a great onslaught against this awful form of sin. Let the land be flooded with such literature as will meet the case on all sides — information to the parents, and also to the boys themselves. The light will banish darkness, and this private kingdom of the arch fiend will soon be torn down.

And now, a word to another class who may chance to turn over these leaves. From my personal experience, I am sure there must be many young men going about amongst us, who do not outwardly appear to have any trouble, but who are really carrying an aching heart, feeling that they are in slavery, and knowing not wherein it will end. To any such that may be reading my story, let me say, there is certain deliverance in an immediate flight to the Lord Jesus. He will “bring you up out of

the horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set your feet upon a rock, and establish your goings, and put a new song in your mouth, even praises unto our God.” I know of no other escape. You must turn, brother, from your sins with full purpose of heart, never to dally with it for a moment. When you are tempted, remember Joseph’s severe temptation, and his words. Gen. 39. “How can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?” Bear in mind that you are really sinning against God every time you give way, and that you will have to get down and bitterly repent of the sin. “Thou, God, seest me.” Shun every sight and every thought that would have a tendency to ensnare you. “Avoid it; pass not by it; turn from it, and pass away.” Prov. 4:15.

THE LORD IS ABLE TO HEAL.

Now see God’s promise of healing, which is so clear. Psa. 107:17-21. It is often questioned, “But will God heal those who have abused themselves? will they not be required to suffer the consequences of their folly?” Well, See what God says, “Fools, because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted. Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat, and they draw near unto the gates of death. Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses. He sent his Word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. O that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and his wonderful works to the children of men!”

Yes, the Lord has made provisions in his atonement to heal, to-day, the bodies of all who will submit fully in obedient service. The medicine is his Word, and you need no other, if you learn the way of faith. Just here let me say, Beware of quack medicines, advertised under such headings as “Lost Manhood Restored,” etc. All such are frauds, and injurious. Now may the Lord Jesus, “that great Shepherd of the sheep,” use the foregoing as seemeth him good, is the sincere prayer of the writer, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

A friend.

ness, and now we would like you dear brethren to help us pray for a gospel wagon so that at each dinner hour several workers may drive to the large factories and there preach the pure gospel to hundreds of men as they eat their dinner. Then we can use it in the street meetings at night, also on the street on Sunday.

Brethren, the King’s business demands haste, so we must not let our time, talents, or money go to waste; but whatsoever our hands find to do, do it with our might. I realize there is no time to waste setting around all day waiting for meeting at night, while perishing souls are going to hell. Do we realize the value of a soul, and the awfulness of hell? Now our expenses will sum not over $200 per month, which is very little when you see the work that is being done. Remember the thousands of souls that are in Chicago hungering for the truth. Pray also for our physical and spiritual strength.

The object of the home is for fallen women and friendless girls, of which it is estimated there are 45,000 in this city. Also for the sick to come and be healed, and for preachers and workers to stop and make it their headquarters. We have no place for any who may come to see the sights of the city, or to rest up, or pleasure seekers; but any Holy Ghost worker who is not afraid of the devil and not afraid of hard gospel work will find a hallelujah welcome. We would ask all the true children, who are on praying terms with the Lord, to offer up the prayer of faith for the financial needs. Your brother in Christ saved and sanctified,

Gorham Tufts Jr.,

TESTIMONIES.

“Thy Testimonies are Wonderful.” – Psa. 119:129.

Montague, Mich.

Dear Saints of God: I believe it is to the glory of God to write my testimony as to the way God called me into the evening light. I was under medical treatment from a Grand Rapids doctor, had taken the medicine for six weeks with no improvement. God showed me by a vision to abandon the medicine and take him for my physician. Praise God! I obeyed the call and am enjoying good health without any medicine, and by a firm grasp on God’s word and his promises, he keeps my soul saved. Praise his name! 1 give God all the glory for it. I ask an interest in your prayers. Your brother in the one body,

F. V. Stevenson.

Dear Children of the King: Our testimony is, we are saved and trusting in the Lord to keep us faithful until death. We find this a glorious way to live, although we recieve persecutions from some poor deluded sect worshippers. Praise God even for persecution, and may he open the eyes of those who persecute us that they may see the light and be constrained to walk in it. They seem to think it strange that we run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of us. We would be glad to hear from the saints at Fairport, Pine Mills, or Wilton, Iowa; also when and where they hold their meetings. We are alone here so far as church privileges are concerned. Pray for us.

Dear Brethern and Sisters in Christ. I am saved, sanctified and kept by the power of God. I praise God this morning for victory over the powers of darkness. I just trust God for soul and body. When any of my family gets sick I take them to the Lord and he heals them. Praise his dear name! Oh what glory runs through my mind to think of what a great physician we have! God is at work here, leading his children out into the light of Christ. The Lord has saved twelve little children here. The world said they were too young. Christ said, “Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” Dear mothers and fathers, let us train our children for heaven. Pray for my unsaved husband, that God may send deep conviction to his heart. Your sister saved,

Lizzie Dean.

Dubois, Pa.

Dear Brethren and Sisters: I feel led by the Spirit of truth to write my testimony, I was saved three years ago, but I joined the M. E sect, did the will of God as best I could, according to the freedom I bad there, which was not very much. God was showing me all the time I was in there that he was not pleased with the pride, and worldly conformity. But I thought it was the devil trying to get me to backslide; but I found as I went on following them, that I was losing my experience. So I went to God and asked him for help. He directed me to the 51st chapter of Isaiah and the 7th verse. The Free Methodists were having meetings, so I went there; but praise the dear Lord, I never joined them. I became discouraged and dropped my profession and backslid. But I never put in such a time; the Word says it is not his will that any should perish. I found that to be true in my case. I praise God for the stripes I received, for it led me to ask God to help me in some way to get back to him. In answer he sent some dear saints of God here to this place to hold meetings. God led me there; that was what my heart longed for. So I saw my condition; I came to Jesus and gave up all ists and isms for his sake and he has wonderfully saved my soul. I am saved and sanctified through his blood, for which I give him all the praise. Your sister in Christ,

Mrs. M. J. Curry.

Elwood, Ind,

Dear Saints ok God: I feel the love of God so rich in my soul that I want to send my praise abroad. I feel all the time to say, Praise God from whom all blessings flow! A little over one year ago the Lord sweetly saved my soul and permitted his Spirit to enter this temple; and in a few days he taught me he was able to heal my body, which he did. I had been a great sufferer from stomach trouble, and at that time was scarcely able to be up, but the Lord instantly healed me. Shortly after, I was telling some of my friends about it; they made light of such belief, advised me not to trust the Lord with my affliction. I thought over the matter for awhile, why they did not understand the Scripture to teach faith healing, as they were all claiming to be children of God. And it was not many days until I opened my Bible to the 2d chapter of 1 Cor., and the Spirit of God revealed it to me that they had not the Spirit of God dwelling in them or they would know the things that are freely given of God. Well, I do praise God for faith to trust him and to know that all his promises are true; for he says, Though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away; and he has promised to heal those who believe, I was on the same line with them once; were all members of the Campbellite church (so called), had head belief, but not the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. They have the form of godliness, but deny the power thereof.

We have had two or three severe trials, trusting God for the healing of our little ones. Only last week our youngest child was very sick; her sufferings were so great; and you who are mothers know how it effects one to see their little ones suffer. And the devil kept suggesting for me to do for her, but the voice of Jesus kept saying, He that loveth father, mother, son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. So it was soon settled that I must trust God, rebuke the devil in the name of Jesus, claim the promise and it was done. Husband and I do praise God for the evening light. We are saved from the delusion of sectism. Having escaped therefrom, we are able to comprehend the darkness existing in them. Pray for us, that we may continue stead fast, unmovable, abounding in the work of the Lord; also that our faith may be increased for the more severe trials, as we know that the Lord will have a trie.. ..le.
