“I will not Forget Thee.”

_____

Sweet is the promise, “I will not forget thee,”
Nothing can molest or turn my soul away;
E’en tho’ the night be dark within the valley,
Just beyond is shining an eternal day.

Cho.
I will not forget thee or leave thee,
In my hands I’ll hold thee, In my arms I’ll fold thee,
I will not forget thee or leave thee,
I am thy Redeemer, I will care for thee.

Trusting the promise, “I will not forget thee,”
Onward will I go with songs of joy and love,
Tho’ earth despise me, tho’ my friends forsake me,
I shall be remembered in my home above.

When at the golden portals I am standing,
All my tribulation, all my sorrow past,
How sweet to hear the blessed proclamation,
“Enter faithful servant, welcome home at last!”

Selected.

SANCTIFIED BY THE HOLY GHOST.

_____

“AND it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Luke 11:1, 2, and Matt. 6:9, 10.

We notice, first, that they were Christians whom Jesus taught to pray this prayer. For Luke calls them disciples, and God was their Father. They were not sinners; then it follows that this prayer is for justified believers to pray. 2d. “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done.” Now, God’s kingdom is joy and peace in the Holy Ghost. Rom. 14:17. So Jesus taught them to pray for joy, peace, and righteousness, to come and dwell in them.

“Thy will be done.” Now, what is God’s will concerning us? The apostle tells us to be not unwise, but to understand what the will of the Lord is. Eph. 5:17. So we do well to know what God’s will is, and what we are praying for, when we say, “Thy will be done.” We shall refer to the following scriptures. “Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Heb. 10:9, 10, and 1 Thess. 4:3. So we see that God’s will is, that we should be sanctified, and his kingdom set up in our hearts; and that our whole heart should be given him, that he may reign therein without a rival: for he is a jealous God, and will not share his throne with any.

Oh the kingdom of God is within us, and it is comfort, and peace, and pure joy, and a hope in our blessed Redeemer, which the world can never destroy. This is what Christ taught his disciples to pray for, as it was something the law could not give, (for there was no perfection under the law). Christ gave himself as a sacrifice, “For by one offering he hath perfected, forever, them that are sanctified.” Heb. 10:14. Now, it would seem foolish for Jesus to teach his disciples to pray for something they could not receive; so in order that they might be sanctified and have their hearts made pure, and be filled with the Holy Ghost, he shed his blood for them without the gate. Then we learn from the foregoing scriptures that Christ taught the disciples to pray for God to sanctify them, after they were already Christians.

We will next notice the prayer of our Savior on the night before he was crucified. He is in great agony, and is praying for his disciples; this is what he says: “Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.” John 17:17, to end of chap. So we see Jesus prayed for just what he taught his disciples to pray; that was for God to sanctify them. After he was crucified and risen from the dead, he appeared unto his disciples, and told them to tarry at Jerusalem until they were endowed with power from on high, that then they should be witnesses for him to all nations, even to the ends of the world. Now, Jesus well knew that unless they were sanctified they would soon deny him as Peter had done; and that they would turn away from the truth of the gospel of Christ, and that division and strife would follow. So he prayed for God to sanctify them and make them one; that they might be a perfect unit, and all labor together for the cause of their blessed Master, and he promised them that he would send this blessing upon them not many days hence. When the day of pentecost was come, they were all sanctified by the Holy Ghost, and were of one mind. Being filled with that perfect love of God, they began to preach with such power that three thousand souls were brought to repentance in one day.

“Oh yes!” say some, “We know that the apostles were sanctified, but it was not intended for us.” Well my friend, in order to decide this, we will go back to Christ’s prayer. “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word.” John 17:20. Oh hallelujah! That prayer reaches me, and dear soul, it reaches you if you will only accept it; for it is through their word that all Christians are made to believe. For Peter tells them on the day of pentecost, that this promise is to them and their children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. Acts 2:39. And the call is: “Come unto me, all ye ends of the earth, and be saved.” Oh! dear souls, isn’t that broad enough to reach you? Oh! may God move upon the mighty deep of your heart, and enable you to sink into his perfect love. O God, thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

But have we any other scriptures that teach sanctification as a second, definite work of grace? Oh yes, certainly, read St. John 15, commencing at first verse. Here Jesus says he is the true vine, and we are branches in him. They that bear no fruit he says he will take away. So you see that it is possible to be in Christ and not bear fruit, and be lost after all. But every branch in him that bears fruit, he says he will purge; which means to make clean or to sanctify wholly. Now, to be in Christ is to be a new creature. 2 Cor. 5:17. By saying he will purge every branch that bears fruit, we learn that we are not sanctified when we are converted; for he says if we abide in him and bring forth fruit, he will purge us; which means that he will cleanse us. So then we find that we are not cleansed from all sin when we are converted, or justified. Nay, verily, the root of all sin remaineth in us until we are sanctified wholly by the Holy Ghost.

When we are justified, our sins are all forgiven, and we stand clear before God; we have his spirit within us, and we feel great peace in our souls. But there is still an evil nature in our hearts that is called the carnal mind. Now, this carnal mind is not subject to God’s holy law, neither indeed can it be; and as we were born with this evil nature in us, it could not be forgiven when God forgave our sins, for we did not commit it; and as it was not committed, it could not be forgiven, for it was no crime of ours. And we cannot get to heaven with this evil nature in us, for it is not holy, and nothing unholy can enter heaven. So it follows then that we possess, by birth, an evil nature that we cannot take to heaven, neither can God forgive it; but while it is not to be forgiven, it can be cleansed out, which means to sanctify or purge.

Now, to show that we do possess this sinful nature, by birth, we will submit to you the following scriptures: Psa. 51:5, and 58:4; Gen. 8:21; Job 14:4, and Eph. 2:3. We inherited this evil nature in the fall of man, and it has been handed down by birth to all Adam’s race. It is called the sin of the world, because all the world possess it. Christ says, make the tree holy, and its fruit holy, or else the tree corrupt, and its fruit corrupt; for it is from the abundance of the heart, that the mouth speaketh. If the heart be evil, the conversation will be evil and the thoughts evil; but if the heart be pure, the conversation will be pure, and the life pure also. To have a pure heart is to be cleansed from this evil nature, and be made perfect in the love of God.

But some will say, “Oh! I believe in heart purity, and we get a pure heart when we are converted and not afterward.” Now, my dear friend, if you have a pure heart, it makes no difference when you get it. If your heart is pure you know it. Christ says, Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. If your heart is not pure, you know it, for the apostle says, if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts. Then be not deceived, but ask God to show you your heart as it is. But we learn that God does not perfect our hearts in love when we are converted. Read 1 Cor. 3:1, 2,3, “And I brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.” We notice that the apostle calls them brethren, and says they are babes IN CHRIST, and if they are in Christ they are Christians, but only babes.

He tells them also that they are carnal, that is, they have that evil nature which they inherited. They are babes, so we see there is a babe state in Christ, and to be in this state is to be like a new-born babe. All our sins have been forgiven, and all the sin we possess is that carnal mind that was born with us, but that always has a tendency to lead us into sin every day, as long as it remains in us, and it will remain until it is cleansed out by an application of the blood of Christ to our hearts, and our hearts are made pure from all sin. The apostle tells them that this carnal mind is the cause of division among them. One saying, I am of Apollos, another saving, I am of Paul, and another, I am of Christ, and another, I am of Cephas, etc. So we find then that the carnal mind causes division. Christ prayed for God to sanctify the people that they might be one.

No wonder there is such a cry against holiness from most of the churches to day. While they stand divided one against another, are they not yet carnal? If it was so in the apostle’s day, is it not so to day? When they speak against sanctification they speak after their own carnal hearts.

But did any of the apostles teach sanctification as a second work of grace? Oh yes, certainly; they all taught it as such, and it has been taught through all ages by God’s holy people. John Wesley taught it (see Wesley’s writings on Christian perfection, also discipline of the M. E. church). But then God’s word is what we want. So we will go to Romans 12:1, 2, 3, and we find the apostle calling on the Roman brethren to offer their bodies a living sacrifice to God. Now, they are already Christians but Paul wants them sanctified, and in order for them to be sanctified, it is necessary for them to offer themselves a living sacrifice to God, which he says is their reasonable service, that they might prove God’s good and acceptable will. He tells the Thessalonian brethren in 1 Thess. 4:3, that this is God’s will even their sanctification. So then Paul wants us to consecrate ourselves to God, and be sanctified. Amen. Praise God! And again in the first chapter of 1 Thess. he tells them that they are in God, and also commends them for this faith and love. Then, in the third chapter, tenth verse, he says that himself, with the other brethren with him are praying night and day, that they might see them, and perfect that which was lacking in their faith. And the verses following read, that they might be established in holiness before God. Then in the last chapter, he says he will pray for God to sanctify and preserve them blameless, soul, spirit, and body. So then we see that the apostle Paul taught and prayed for just what his Master taught and prayed. And then he tells the Hebrews to lay aside every weight, and run the race that is set before them; to endure chastisements, that they may be made partakers of his holiness; to make straight paths for their feet, and follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which, no man shall see the Lord. Heb. 12:1-14.

So we learn from what we have read that sanctification is a Bible doctrine and that Christ taught it, and prayed for it and made provisions for it. Also, that the apostle Paul taught it and prayed for it. Now we will see if any of the rest taught it. James says, “Cleanse your hands, ye sinners, and purify your hearts, ye double minded.” There are two kinds of people spoken of here, the sinner and the double minded person. Now a sinner is a transgressor; such a one is called upon to forsake his way, and turn to God and have his sins forgiven. A double minded man is one that is forgiven, but not sanctified; he is a babe in Christ, and has a carnal mind, and such a one is called upon to consecrate himself to God, and be sanctified and made perfect in love. But is this not only a growth in grace instead of a different work of grace in the heart? O no, not at all, we may grow in grace, but we can never grow into grace, for to get into grace is a momentary work. We may be getting nearer the line for a long time, but there is a certain instant when we cross over into the promised land. A man may be a week dying, but there is a certain moment when he ceases to breathe. And so with our hearts; they are sinful until they are made pure, and when they are made pure they are not sinful. God, which knoweth the hearts of all men, made no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Acts 15:8, 9. So then it is by faith that our hearts are made pure. Then we find that we are justified by faith, sanctified by faith, and preserved and kept by faith, ready to be revealed at the last day. “And every man that hath this hope in him, purifieth himself even as he is pure.” 1 Jno. 3:3. “And herein is our love made perfect, for as he is, so are we in this world.” 1 Jno. 4:17. We find that this perfect love is to be received in this life, for as Christ is, so are we in this world. Jesus says: “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” Matt. 5:48.

Now Jesus does not mean that we can arrive at infinite perfection on earth, neither angelic nor resurrection perfection, but he does mean for us to be made perfect in love; for in connection with this passage he tells us to love our enemies, and pray for those that despitefully use us, and persecute us. For one to love an enemy, he must have a heart made free from sin and be perfect in love.

Now my Christian friend, if you know that your heart is not made perfect in love, you should seek a closer walk with Christ, and not be too ready to condemn those that may be living closer to God than you are. And why do you say there is no perfection when God’s word says “be ye perfect?” Would a just God ask more of his creatures than they can do? As God has done so much for us, should we not, at least, serve him with our whole heart, mind, and strength? Will you not admit that in the hour of death when you see that your days on earth are past, and when you see that your soul must soon stand before the judgment seat of Christ — oh, then will you not say, Farewell, I give up all for my Redeemer’s sake? Oh, do you not expect, then, to be made perfect in love? You must admit that you do. Now, while I do believe that some Christians are made perfect in or near the hour of death, there is no reason why they should wait till then. Do you not believe there is many a soul forgiven in the hour of death? Most certainly you do; still you would never advise any one to wait till death to seek salvation, but you would most earnestly say, “To day is the day of salvation. Seek ye the Lord to day.” If one in the hour of death can consecrate and give up all, and be perfected in love, can he not any time in life, and then receive this wonderful blessing which God promises to give to all that will consecrate themselves wholly to his will?

Now, I will say that this doctrine of sanctification is not my doctrine, but it is the doctrine of the Bible. Christ and all the apostles taught it; and it was taught by Charles and John Wesley, and is the doctrine of the Methodist church to day, (though not preached by many of the Methodist preachers). When I was earnestly reading God’s word, with nothing else in view but the salvation of my soul, I found this doctrine of perfect love taught there, and I then gave my whole heart to God; and to day his perfect love fills my soul and let come what may, while breath remains in this mortal body I will but tell his wondrous love. Though I should stand alone, and the whole world be against me, I know that Jesus is with me; and if I suffer for his dear name, I will count it all joy. I’ll praise his dear name forever. So in conclusion will say, that we have endeavored to give you God’s word and not our doctrine.

J. W. Youngblood.

Dear Ones in Christ: My testimony to day is, both in word and manner of life that I am blessedly saved, and trusting in Jesus. As we have put on Christ, so let us walk in him, that our lives as well as words may speak and testify of the Christ that dwells in our hearts by faith; and as faith worketh by love, let us exercise perfect love and perfect faith. Oh how my heart abounds with love to God for having lifted me from the pit of sin and caused me to walk in the paths of righteousness even for his name’s sake! Surely blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection. Your brother saved and sanctified,

W. D. Lorimer.

EXPLANATION.

_____

I have always been opposed to sects, notwithstanding I have been a minister in the U. P. church for a long time, and am now in charge of the —— mission, and I find that contention and strife exists. And I want information in regard to your policy.

1st. How do you ordain ministers?

2d. Do you issue credentials to give authority to join people in marriage, and to baptize?

Yours truly, ——

ANSWER. The Lord bless you, dear brother. The first thing, get a scriptural conception of the Church, a real “discerning of the body of Christ,” and come out of all sect arrangements. Second, the only sure remedy for strife and contention, is entire sanctification. That removes the indwelling cause of all discord, and perfects all who receive it in the purity of Christ, the image of God, and the unity of the Spirit. Amen.

Answer to first question. When men are saved, called, qualified, and chosen of God to the office of elder, or deacon in the Church of the First Born; and their calling is made manifest by the Spirit, as we see in the scriptures cited above, the ministry, or two or three elders present, knowing both by the fruits of the party, and the voice of the Spirit, his calling and ordination of God (and this should be made very sure by fasting and prayer), lay hands on the person, all kneeling in the presence of God, commending him to God in prayer, and invoking upon him the heavenly gift of all needed humility, wisdom and power, and thus publicly manifesting his call of God.

2d. We do not give credentials, having no scriptural authority to do so. Nor is the same needed either to solemnize marriages, or administer the ordinances of Christ. And as for a paper license to preach, such a thing were only needed by a person unfit to preach. For whoever is filled with the power of the Holy Spirit has license, power and authority sent down from heaven, and is thereby known and read of all men. And whoever lacks this unction God has no use for. So, were we to give written credentials, should he lose the Spirit of God, the divine license, he would most likely keep on preaching for the devil, using the paper license, when no longer used of God, having not the seal of heaven.

Another brother asks, If a brother has been ordained elder or deacon, and afterward loses the real qualifications, does he still continue in office? Such should be patiently borne with, and labored with, but should they continue to be a detriment to the cause, after sufficient long-suffering should have their official relation ignored. Should the deficiency be a want of ability, rather than a defect, in Christian character, the want can sometimes be supplied by the addition of another person, chosen of God and more fully qualified.

Still another asks us if ordination received in the sect is sufficient, since we have come out of Babylon. A good answer will be found in Jer. 51:26. “They shall not take of thee a stone for a corner, nor a stone for a foundation.” Though God accepted us under the ordination received by the hands of sectarian ministers, as long as we did not discern the body of Christ, and the evil of schisms, but now he leads his ministers to ignore that ordination as a witness against her, and to receive ordination in the perfect light of God. Amen.

QUESTIONS.

_____

Is it right to lock up our corn cribs, smoke houses, store houses, etc.? or should we take off the locks, and trust the Lord to keep the thief out?

ANS. If your community abounds with thieves, common sense would teach you that it would be wisdom to lock your doors and thereby secure your property and remove the temptation from the would-be thief, and the word of God would not condemn you for so doing. Sometimes people get fanatic over such things and the Lord has to let them down a little by way of a real humiliating experience.

Is it wrong for saints to doctor their horses, cattle, and other live stock, that are sick, or should they anoint with oil and pray for their healing? I ask these questions for information, because of certain teaching here.

W. O. Williams.

ANS. The anointing of the sick as spoken of in James 5:14, has reference to people. There is no instructions in the word for us to anoint the dumb animals, however there would be no wrong committed in doing so. But there are promises which will cover the whole ground, as it were, wherein we read: “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you. ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” Jno. 15:7.

“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: and if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petition that we desired of him.” 1 Jno. 5:14, 15.

“For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass, he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.”

There may be no particular wrong committed by doctoring the dumb animals unless injurious drugs are given, or the Lord’s means which should have been used in the spread of the gospel, is unnecessarily spent for doctoring. God’s children would have far less trouble with their stock as well as with themselves under such circumstances if they would rely more upon God and move out upon his promises. Many have had their animals healed in answer to prayer. Some who are weak in faith, take medicine, for almost every little ailment, but such are not living up to their privileges in Christ Jesus, and there is great room for spiritual advancement. However “him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.” Rom. 14:13. Let the weak in faith seek to make advancement, and those who are spiritual aid them in the spirit of meekness.

Is it a sin to eat pork?

ANS. No, not unless you eat too much for the good of your health. With most people that would indeed be a very small amount. When used to any great extent it has a tendency to make a person stupid and sluggish, and often brings on dyspepsia and other diseases. Its excessive use with tea and coffee or other stimulating drinks, are the frequent causes of sick headache; it also fires the passions and encourages sensuality, and many evils may result, therefore the less pork used the better.

Under the Mosaic law it was a sin to eat the flesh of swine, as they were considered to be unclean, because they did not chew the cud. See Lev. 11:7; Deut. 14:8. As we are no longer under the Mosaic law (Gal. 3:24, 25) but under the law of Christ, and he does not specify just what we shall eat and what we shall not eat, he intends that we, at least, use a little common sense. “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Cor. 10:31.

EXPLANATION.

_____

Please explain the ordination of deacons and elders. References, 1st, Acts 6:6. 2d, 1 Tim. 4:14, and 2 Tim. 1:6. 3d, Acts 13:2-6. Your saved brother,

R. A. Pearson.

ANSWER.

The first scripture is probably sufficiently answered in the above explanation.

The scriptures in the second question are as follows:

Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. 1 Tim. 4:14.

Wherefore I put thee in remembrance, that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting

Page 3

on of my hands. — 2 Tim. 1:6.

By reference to 2 Tim. 1:5, we see that Timotheus had been brought up very devout, and his mother, and grandmother were both very pious and godly women; it is highly probable that through one of them, or some one else, it had been predicted that Timothy would be a special vessel unto Lord. And now the prophecy had been fulfilled, and he was in possession of the Spirit, received through — or in fulfillment of prophecy, “with the laying on of hands of the presbytery.’’

The presbytery, simply means the presbyters, or elders. The word in Greek for elder is PRESBUTEROS. More than one would be called elders, or the eldership. The word has no reference to a sectarian organization, as a conference or synod, etc.

No one should be ordained, not filling — at least in the main — the prescribed qualifications in 1 Tim. 3:1-7, and Titus 1:5-9. — read them. They should be truly spiritual minded and holy. Second, they must first be well proved, and give real evidence and fruits of their call. And yet, we understand the Word to teach that whatever good experience they may possess, it is both the duty and privilege of the person receiving ordination to that office, to expect a special endowment of power by the Holy Spirit, and of authority to teach or preach; not communicated by man or through man, because of their ecclesiastical horn, or sacerdotal gown; but by the succession of the Holy Spirit direct from heaven. The Lord using holy hands as a medium of communicating the Spirit, as he does in the gift of healing.

In Acts 13:1-6 — turn and read it, we have a beautiful picture of the order of God in the selection and constitution of men in any important calling in the church.

  1. The churches were in condition to receive orders from heaven. They were fasting and serving God in the Spirit.
  2. God by the Spirit made the selection, as his eye is alone capable of discerning who would best honor him in any particular calling.
  3. The Lord by his Spirit, communicated his choice of workmen for their calling. “The Holy Spirit said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.”
  4. After chosen, qualified, and made manifest of God, the elders still yet with fasting and prayer laic hands upon them, acknowledging the divine call, and dedicating thereunto, so co-operating with God and removing all questioning in the church respecting their place in the body. God and the church being of one mind, it is said, “they sent them,” and yet “they being sent forth by the Holy Spirit,” etc.

Springfield, Ohio, May 27, 1894.

Dear Brethren: We enjoyed a precious feast today. After the Sabbath school we had a most precious meeting and consecration service, in which Sister Dresher consecrated for sanctification; also Bro. Xander and Sister Sairs were reclaimed. After this service we went to the water, and Sister Dresher was immersed in the name of Jesus. Oh what a precious time! The work is going on here gloriously despite of the devil and all opposition. We go from here to Dark Co. and join S. L. Speck in the work. Pray for us.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Greeting: We are glad to report victory on the Lord’s side. This morning finds us all saved. Praise the Lord! We left Rolla, May 4, and commenced meeting near this place, May 6, in the name of our king. The Lord blessed our labors. There were three converted and four sanctified; and two were baptized. Praise the Lord forever! The people are very much stirred; many are interested about their souls. We aim to work towards the west, some fifteen miles north of the Frisco R. R. Any one desiring our labors, address us at Rolla, Mo. We are saved and out for the holy war.

Auburn, Neb., May 23, 1894.

Dearly Beloved Saints of God, Greeting: May God continue to keep you all filled with the Spirit. We can truly report victory on the side of the Lord. On Saturday, before the first Sunday in May, we met with the congregation of saints near Nishnabotna, Mo. and truly the Lord was with us, and gave us three very precious services; and after the eleven o’clock service on Sunday, four dear saints followed the Lord in the ordinance of baptism. The spirit of God was upon us all, giving us victory and filling us with the joys of salvation, for which we praise his name. From the place named above we came to Auburn, Neb., and have been holding forth the word of life to the people here, and some are under conviction, while others oppose the truth. Oh dear ones, pray for us and the work of the Lord in this part of his vineyard. Your brother and sister in the one body,

McGrath, Mo., May 31, 1894.

Dear Brethren: May God bless you all with much grace and victory in your souls. Amen. Since our last report we have been in the work quite constant. The work near Ash Grove, Mo. where we were when we wrote last, was blessed of the Lord in the salvation of precious souls and a great clearing up by the truth. Seventeen dear ones, dead to the world, were buried with the Lord in baptism. We closed the meeting with a very precious ordinance meeting. We greatly rejoiced with the saints’ obedience. There is a glorious little church in that country. Praise God for the pure organization of his own church, going together without the sound of a hammer and the clashing of human machinery, and tools not heard in her. God hath set the members in the body as it hath pleased him. From that place wife and I parted with dear Bro. and Sister Bolds and daughters, and went to Norwood, where we had a few services in Jesus’ name, then to West Plains, Mo. At and near that place are a few souls who are living true to God, without having much of the real word of God preached. The Lord bless them and keep them true. On May 13, we again met with Bro. Bolds’ family and dear Bro. Bennett at Lebanon, Mo., a town where we suppose the pure light of holiness had never been taught. The tabernacle was erected for work and we began to worship the Lord on our Father’s footstool. Oh hallelujah! It looked quite encouraging to see hundreds of priceless souls come and listen attentively to the gospel; some, to be sure, came through vain curiosity but not all. The Lord captured a few souls by his love, and saved them and sanctified some. Many accepted the truth. They begin having meeting now with themselves and the Lord. We believe holiness has gone to that place to stay. Praise God! Nearly all of the saints at this place are joyful in the Lord. We pray God to keep his children true, and bring back the fallen ones. We do praise God for victory in our souls. All send holy love to you all. Your free brother in the family of God,

Ostis B. Wilson.

Augusta, Ga., May 19, 1894.

Dear Ones in Jesus: We do praise the Lord for the peace of God that passeth all understanding, which is in our hearts to day, and for keeping us midst recent severe trials and persecutions. We closed up our meeting at Louisville, Ga., the 10th inst. One young lady claimed entire sanctification, midst bitter persecution, from her own family and others. Pray for her. The whole town proper, white and colored, rejected the truth. Good congregations at first, and a number seemed to be taking a deep interest in the meeting, but their sect preacher began to hold meeting so that the people would be drawn away from rearing the truth; and the plan, thus gotten up by the devil worked very well, to keep the people from coming to the meeting. However, praise the Lord, good seed was sown in many hearts, and much good fruit may yet result therefrom. From the town we went out in the country and held a few meetings at two different places. There were no consecrations, but the people at both places were attentive and kind; congregations good. Yesterday we came to Augusta, Ga. met with the church here last night. It was a joy and benediction to our souls to fellowship and worship with such a clean, clear saved people. It will be remembered that Bro’s Kilpatrick and Thomas Carter came here last winter and held meetings, at which time the church of God was established. Praise the Lord! There doesn’t seem to have been any daubing with untempered mortar. After a short stay here, the Lord willing, we go over into middle South Carolina, to hold meetings, where we had organized “holiness bands” before we got out into the clear light and discerned the Lord’s body. We do bless and praise the Lord from the heart in a way we cannot express, for leading us out into the sweet, bright, glorious evening light. Freely have we received, and thank the Lord, freely are we willing to give. Pray for us, dear ones. There is so little done towards establishing the church of God in the South. The Lord bless all his children everywhere, and every one whose eyes may fall on these lines. Your saved brother and sister,

J. E. and Rivie Lee Shaw.

_____

Markleville, Ind., May 17, 1894.

Dear Saints: We are praising God for salvation from sin. Meeting just closed at Hadley, Ind., with a glorious victory, and a little church established on the solid rock. Praise God! to him be all the glory. There were about thirteen at the altar, nearly all of whom gave evidence of God’s power to justify or sanctify. A number reclaimed, and they seeing the wickedness of the world, and the delusive powers of Satan, went on unto perfection. Hadley first heard the true light about a year and a half ago, and God began at that time to gather out a remnant from the Quakers, and others of the babel family there. But as God called out his children, the devil also called out a few and attempted to deceive the people by them. One in particular, a man who wished to be a Quaker preacher but falling put with them he could not obtain a license. On hearing the saints, he saw at once what he thought was a chance to distinguish himself and so came out. The devil got him to profess to be sanctified, and when we came he laid out the work and surveyed the route for us, but was told that God would be allowed to lead as he saw fit. He began growling and was told that he had no salvation, and rebuked privately and at last publicly. Finding he could not run the meeting he attempted to break it up, taking a large number of people with him. He then had us turned out of the school house, and God opened up private houses and the work of salvation commenced. The day after being shut out of the school house, God began in most wonderful way to save souls.

May God bless the brethren in the field and keep them from compromising with sectism. But praise God, the line has been drawn here, and a most effectual separation has taken place. May the saints ever keep it drawn and rebuke the devil. When saints close meetings because Babylon round the corner has a meeting, and attend that and the sect preacher sets them up in the stand and pats them on the back, look out. Meeting closed with a grand victory.

Bro. Melvis Stuart was ordained as elder and Bro. Levi Stuart as deacon. Four buried with Christ in baptism. Sister Bray of Markleville joined us the second day, and was wonderfully used of God. God did truly send her to us. We commenced meeting at Columbus last night.

Dear Trumpet Readers: God bless and keep you all. Meeting closed in the vicinity of Markleville. Two of the formerly disobedient ones reclaimed, and others strengthened in the work. Meeting commenced here Saturday night, in company with Bro’s and Sisters High and Palmer, and Bro. Land. Good interest. Wife and I expect to be with the saints at campmeeting. We are saved by two works, all on the altar to do God’s will. Pray for us. Your’s saved.

Milton, Ore., May 17, 1894.

Dear Family of God Everywhere, Greeting: May great peace, everlasting joy and victory be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen. Praise God! The ordinance meeting near Pullman, Wash. was a glorious and sweeping victory for king Jesus and his precious church. Truly the Lord has a precious remnant, filled with grace, holy zeal and fire for his work in his precious cause in these parts. This was, certainly, one of the sweetest, most glorious and pentecostal ordinance services which we have been in for some time. When this meeting began there seemed to be a degree of spiritual depression and cloud over Zion’s sky, by a smudge of the antichrist spirit which had tainted some. But the glorious refiner searched all hearts, the fire of holiness quickly swept it all away, when the mighty spirit of God fell upon the assembly in power and great glory, and the fire of God ran high and deep as a mighty bursting flame. It was a time of victory, shouting, and glory in Zion. Hallelujah! O let all the redeemed praise the Lord! Three dear prodigals who had been overcome by sectish, antichrist and worldly spirits returned home to God, and we believe they got a deeper and clearer experience than ever. May God ever bless and keep them all, free in the Lord and clear in their souls. Another sister, who had gotten under a cloud by the anti-christ spirit was set gloriously free. All were more deeply settled into God than ever. Sixteen happy saints were immersed into the symbolic grave. This was a glorious and spiritual baptismal service. A few of the saints from Colfax were over, but the rest were detained from coming. The saints from Spokane Co., Wash, and Idaho desired to meet with us in this feast of the Lord, but they could not come. Several were convicted for, sought and obtained the various gifts of the Spirit. There were also several cases of divine healing in his name. Several others were deeply convicted, who, we believe, will soon be saved out in this glorious evening light. The Lord has a number of gloriously saved and consecrated young people there, who feel called to the work of the Master. Sabbath, we all met at the home of dear Bro. E. C. Moys, for the communion service, which commenced at about four o’ clock and closed at eleven P. M. It was a time, better felt and experienced in the Lord than told. Jno. 13:17. The holy one of Israel was glorious in the midst of his saints. Fifty-one dear happy children of God followed Jesus in this glorious solemn and sublime ordinance of the New Testament. Dear Bro. J. M. Cochran was ordained elder of the church of God at Colfax, which was witnessed to by the spirit of Jesus. May the Lord ever abundantly bless, keep, qualify and use him, to the glory of God and make him a real blessing to the cause of Jesus. The brethren decided to have a camp meeting north of Colfax, Wash, to begin about June 22, and last till July 15. Let all the saints in Idaho, Wash, and Ore. make preparations to come and attend this feast of the Lord, which we believe will be with showers of blessings. We hope the dear Forker brethren and others will come; yea all seekers after light and truth and healing of soul and body, come in his neme. We hope it will please the Lord to send Bro. and Sister Randolph and other ministerial workers to that meeting. May God richly bless and reward the dear brethren who so kindly provided and cared for us.

On Monday, we were conveyed to the R. R. station by the dear brethren, and took train for this place. We commenced meeting in the Freewater hall Sat. evening to continue as long as the Lord wills. From here we hope to meet with the dear brethren in Boise City, Idaho, as we feel thus led of the Lord. Since we left the June C. M. at Grand Junction, Mich., truly the Lord has been with us on our line of march for his own glory. About 150 saints have thus far been brought out in this glorious evening light by the power of his Spirit, through the precious gospel of his beloved Son. To God only wise be eternal praise through Jesus Christ our great Redeemer. Amen. Thus this glorious campaign of flaming light, truth and perfect holiness is spreading over the face of the whole earth. Hallelujah to the glorious captain of our salvation! Love to all. Pray on, dear ones, for us all and the work of God on the coast, that it may spread and prosper more and more. From your unworthy servants, washed in the blood of the Lamb and kept. Amen.

THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL.

Milan, Mo.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I believe it would be to the glory of God to write my testimony this morning, as I have never written to the TRUMPET before. I am praising God for his keeping power, praising him for victory over the devil. I was saved in Aug. 1892, and am determined to stand on the solid rock Christ Jesus. Oh how my heart rejoices when I read the TRUMPET, to know that such a gospel is preached to the world. There are six sect churches in this town; not many holiness people here. I wish all God’s saints to pray for me. Your sister in Christ,

Urbana, Mo,

Dear Ones in Christ: I wish to testify to the glory of God, for what he has done for me. I can say deep down in my heart that I am fully justified. I can’t thank the dear Lord enough for what he has done and is still doing for me. Last fall I was out in Pennsylvania visiting my dear sister, and while there I had the pleasure of attending some of the saints, meetings. I enjoyed their meeting very much, and the dear Lord saved my soul while there and I have been happy ever since. I have had many temptations and the devil tries awful hard to lead me astray, but by the help of God he can’t do it. Oh pray for me, dear ones; that I may be kept from the evil one. I am not sanctified, but would like to be. Pray that I may ever live low at His feet. Your sister in Christ,

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of God to write my testimony for the first time. I can truly say my trust is all in the Lord. He has fully saved my soul and sanctified my nature. Hallelujah! Praise his dear name! I thank God for sending Bro. G. B. Collins to this place, and through him the Lord has brought me into the light of. his word and delivered me from all isms of men, and I can say my soul doth magnify the Lord. There are but a few true saints in this place, but thank God, we have some glorious seasons, waiting upon God. The Lord is wonderfully leading us into his holy word, and giving us an understanding of his will, and we are always glad to follow where he leads. If any of God’s holy ministers feel led of the Lord to come and hold meetings any time this summer, fall, or winter, they will find a hearty welcome by us. Pray for us here, that God will keep us in love and unity of the Spirit, also that the way may be opened for us to attend the camp meeting. Your brother in Christ,

A WARNING AGAINST ADVENTISM.

_____

Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: May the dear Lord bless you all. When I wrote last I promised to give a word of warning in my next letter to you, against the fearful antichrist spirit of Adventism, or no-soul- ism that is darkening counsel, perverting the truth, confusing, misleading, deceiving, and destroying souls. It seems as if the old Jewish Sabbath or law is the Christ of this little sect.

Their first object is to confuse the weak and unstabled about the Sabbath day, lead them to believe that they are keeping the wrong day, and that they must keep the old Jewish Sabbath or be lost. This old dead law they make the very hub of their lifeless machinery. Christ and his doctrine is only a secondary or non- essential personage or theory in their rotten doctrine. When their victims are thoroughly duped into their Sabbath lie, the next step is to teach them to believe that they have no immortal soul. Just here I am often made to wonder how the devil ever succeeded in making any man, even a heathen, believe such an unreasonable, ungodly, unscriptural, inhuman lie as that. And I want to say to the credit(?) of those antichrist teachers, that if they have led any one in any country to believe that no-soul lie, they have succeeded in palming off a lie on enlightened men in a civilized land and in an enlightened age, that the devil has failed to fool the most benighted heathen with, in the darkest continent or in the darkest age of the world. It seems to me that any man in heathendom with half sense, would know that he had an immortal soul, if he had never seen a Bible, or met a man of’God. Poor brutish creatures! The devil ought surely to be proud of them and their dirty work.

Then after their victim is duped into that abominable lie, the next step is to convert him to the devil’s doctrine that there is no eternal hell, or place of punishment. By this time they have beat or cheated him out of his soul, and destroyed his knowledge of truth in regard to a future punishment for his wickedness; dragged him down on a level with the brute creation; torn him away from Jesus Christ and his perfect law of liberty; and shut up in bondage under a dead law. Then they are ready to receive any delusion their false teachers may impose upon them, such as commandments to abstain from meats, and following the lying sorcerers of false prophets and prophetesses, and almost any other delusion of the devil. For it is reasonable to suppose that a man who can be so deceived as to believe that he has not an immortal soul, is capable of believing any other lie that false teachers or devils may teach him.

In these poor deceived souls the following scriptures are wonderfully fulfilled. Read the scriptures according to these references, then consider these poor dupes, and see how plainly God describes them and how faithfully he warns us of them. 2 Pet. 2d ch.; second epistle of John; Titus 1:10-16; 1 Tim. 4; 2 Tim. 3; 1 Tim. 1:5-11; Col. 2d ch.; Phil. 3:2-4; Gal. 3d, 4th and 5th ch.; 2 Cor. 3d ch. By searching those and many other scriptures, these false teachers and their doctrines of devils and dead laws, will clearly appear to any child of God.

I wish now to speak of some of their evil work and its effects. I know of some people who were honest, but not established in the whole truth, who have become confused by them, and are trying to keep the old Jewish Sabbath; and some reading in Genesis that the evening and the morning was the seventh day, try to keep Saturday evening and Sunday morning till noon, working on Saturday till noon and Sunday afternoon, thus desecrating both days and keeping no Sabbath at all. Others pretending to keep the Jewish Sabbath uncircumcised, hitch up their stock and drive four or five miles on their much idolized Sabbath, build fires in their houses, and break their lorded Sabbath in twenty different ways, and in their soul-deceiving hypocrisies abuse others for not keeping it. Then tell them that according to the word of God they have no right to keep it unless they are circumcised, they will say, “Oh we have the circumcision of the heart, and that gives us a right to the covenant.” The idea that any man of sense could read the Bible and then say that the circumcision of the heart through Jesus Christ gave him a right to the old covenant, in the face of the very fact that it belongs to a far different institution, covenant, law, and testament, altogether, that the circumcision of the flesh was alone for the old law or covenant! Now it is real hypocrisy for an uncircumcised Jew or Gentile to pretend to keep that old law or covenant, or its Sabbath, when we show them how they desecrate their idolized Sabbath by working their teams, making fires, and traveling. They say, “Oh Jesus modified it.” Still they cry out that Jesus did not, could not, nor would not, destroy, change, or remove, his Father’s law. Thus they do not and cannot keep the old Jewish Sabbath, and will not keep the Christian Sabbath. Thus they are real Sabbath-desecrating hypocrites.

Another old brother of my acquaintance became confused by those perverters of truth and for awhile lost his mind and wanted to destroy or kill his friends and loved ones. Sometimes they will hunt and fire off their guns around meeting houses where Christians are holding meeting on the Lord’s day. I passed by the home of one of those lawists one Lord’s day. When Christians were going to church he was ditching on the roadside (letting his light shine). I could praise God that I was not cursed with his religion.

Another lawist hypocrite preaching the Jewish Sabbath stopped on the road on his much loved Sabbath day (Saturday), and after preaching his Sabbath to the man where he stopped (who was a merchant), he then bought some crackers and sardines for his dinner, ate them, then excused himself and hurried on, as he had a long journey before him. All this done on his Sabbath and he going about teaching others to observe it, and abusing them for not doing it, and he himself an uncircumcised Gentile.

Oh brother, sister, the Lord help you to beware of false teachers. Beware of law teachers, who have turned aside unto vain jangling, desiring to be teachers of the law, neither understanding what they say nor whereof they affirm. The Lord save you-from their soul-destroying influence. The time is come to cry aloud and spare not; to lift up our voices like a trumpet, and warn the people, and meet every false doctrine as Jesus met them. Souls are at stake. May the Lord help me to do my part. Your brother in the holy war,

W. W. Bradley.

ABIDING IN THE TRUTH.

_____

1 Jno. 2:21. — “I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth; but, because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.” “Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth.” God’s children are all begotten of his own will, with his own word of truth, and are thus brought to a saving knowledge of God’s truth as it is in Christ Jesus. Oh how blessed is the knowledge of freedom of the truth! “For ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” Jno. 8:32. To know the truth is to become savingly acquainted with Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life. In the midst of the great confusion of tongues or the presumed manner of introducing sinners to the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world, many who are unlearned in the way of truth and life are led into greater darkness and delusion than before, their latter end becoming worse than the first; and it is to the end that such may be benefited, that we feel inspired to offer a few words on the truth.

God conceives his children by the power of the Holy Ghost, as by the word of truth he speaks unto the sinner concerning his lost condition; and as the glass of God’s word reflects his image, he is led to realize God’s conception of his spiritual condition, and to see himself as God sees him — lost. And as the word of truth further reveals unto him Jesus, ready, willing and able to save, and God ready willing and able to receive him as a son, and as it is the day of God’s power unto him, he is made to lay hold upon eternal life. He is begotten of the will of God by the word of truth, and born of the Spirit of truth, laying hold upon the promises of God contained in the truth. He is made a partaker of the divine nature of God, whereby he is given divine conception of the truth, divine faith, love, joy and peace in the Holy Ghost. Yea, heaven and earth hath been shaken, and he has received a kingdom that cannot be moved. Glory to God! And oh what sweet communion and fellowship has the new-born babe in Christ, with the Father and with Christ who is now his elder brother! Oh the royal family of God, who would not be a member of it! It is unto these new born babes in Christ (believers) that the apostle now addresses himself, admonishing them to abide in the truth, knowing that no lie is of the truth, but is of its father the devil, and that the truth is of God and is his word. And as his word is incomplete without his Spirit of truth, let us see to it, dear ones, that we are constantly drawing from the fountain head, and thus kept filled with the Spirit and the word. And having received his word, let us keep it. “But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.” 1 Jno. 2:5.

Dear ones in the one body, let us abide in the truth (Christ); “for as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself except it abide in the vine, no more can ye except ye abide in me.” “For herein is our Father [God] glorified, that we bear much fruit.” Unto those of you who have been engrafted into Christ, the promise is, that if ye bear fruit he (the Father) purgeth it, cleanses, sanctifies, that it may bring forth more fruit. And it is you (not sinners) that he beseeches to present your bodies a living sacrifice, for the crucifixion of the carnal nature. “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” 1 Jno. 2:16.

Much might be said upon the different lines of truth; but as God has spoken in his truth, we say to all, Eat the little book. Oh the truth, the blessed utterances of the Holy One of Israel! How I love to walk in all the truth! For we know that no lie is of the truth; for thy word oh God, is truth. Your brother in God’s triumphant, visible body, abiding in the truth.

THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL.

Psa. 119:129.

Dear Trumpet Readers: I have never written my testimony to the GOSPEL TRUMPET. I do praise God for a salvation that keeps me from all sin. I am so glad we do not have to call on earthly doctors when we are afflicted. A few weeks ago my tooth began to ache and my face to swell, so my husband and sister-in-law anointed me in the name of the Lord, and the tooth stopped aching. But by going out in the cold wind I took cold in it, and my face again began to swell, but my tooth did not ache. My face swelled till I could not get my mouth open to eat any thing but soup or something very thin. Again on Monday night we had the saints to come in and have prayer, and again anointed, and my face got better at once, but as soon as the saints were gone it got worse, and instead of holding on by faith I again turned to feeling and began to think I had the mumps. My face continued to get worse till I could not rest at night, and I became so weak that I could hardly take care of the baby who was then but a few weeks old. But on Wednesday morning I again claimed the victory and held on by faith, and in less than an hour the swelling broke, and now it has all gone. But for some reason the Lord has not seen fit to let me open my mouth much yet; but the Lord’s will be done. Pray for me that it may be a complete work.

We believe it would be to the glory of God for some more workers to come out here to help in the gospel work. Would be pleased to have Bro. and Sister Randolph to come if the Lord so leads. From your sister saved and sanctified,

Lydia Green.

Dear Saints: I feel led of God this morning to write my testimony for the first time, and for the glory of the Lord. I feel that I am saved, and living for the Lord. I am so thankful to my Savior for the blessed light I do receive each day. I lived in darkness so many years, I was a Methodist about forty years; was led by the preacher, and he was blind, so the blind was leading the blind. But thank God I have my eyes open now. I have light to walk in; praise his holy name! I came out of the sect about ten years ago. I was in darkness; lad no light. I was converted in that church, but was without a shepherd. When I left the sect I did not know what to do. I felt sometimes that there was no hope for me; was afflicted and did not know how to trust the Lord for his healing power, but took the doctor’s medicine for my healing; consequently I was not healed. I went to Phoenix, A. T. there I heard the true gospel preached. Thank the Lord, at the first sermon I heard preached, my eyes were open. The blessed light shone from me, but had that sect teaching so deep in me, it was hard to get out. But think the Lord, it is all gone; the galling yoke is off. Praise the Lord! I take him for my physician for my body. I want the prayers of all the dear saints. We want a preacher here to preach the pure gospel. There are so many poor souls going down to ruin. I ask the prayers of all the saints for a preacher here. Pray for my unsaved children. Pray for me, dear ones, that I may do the will of God. I am sixty-two years old. Your sister in the faith, saved and kept.

Dearly Beloved Saints: May heaven’s peace abide with you all. Feeling led to let the dear saints hear from me again, I will just say I am still saved in Jesus, with a constant peace in my soul. Have been busy working for Jesus, and a part of the time with my hands. I am now at Decatur, weaving carpet, to help my family in the necessaries of this life. Will be here about a month, the Lord willing, then I desire greatly to get out again for the Lord. And as there have been many places where the dear ones have desired me to come, I will just say that when I am through here laboring with my hands, I shall then be able to respond to some of the calls. On last evening while reading in the TRUMPET of the June camp meeting it seemed that surely I ought to be there and learn more about the deep things of God; and when I stop for a moment to think of so many perishing souls, and many calls for the real bread of life, it seems I cannot content myself at the carpet loom. I feel just like dropping every thing else and running to the rescue of poor lost souls; and when we look around and see so many poor souls deceived and crying peace when there is none, deceived and deceiving others, it makes us feel like crying aloud and lifting up our voices like a trumpet. And again I realize it means much to go out in these last days among so many different spirits, to preach God’s holy word. Indeed, brethren, let every one that is called out into this work, be sure to know nothing but Jesus. Be like the apostle Paul, know not the speech but the power. Ask God to give you discernment enough to know the precious from the vile, and him that serveth God from them that serve him not. Preach the word in all its purity, with love and meekness, but not so meek as to plaster them over and cry peace when there is none. Also I find it behooves us as Christians to do much preaching in our daily walk, such as being very quiet and humble, not to indulge in light and frivolous talk, but be sober, just, and holy, as an example in all we say and do, let us be sure Jesus is in it. Well, at another time, I will tell of the wonderful healing of my body, the Lord willing. Yours in the Lord,

Belle Stetler.

To all the Trumpet Readers: I feel led to send my first testimony to the TRUMPET. I heard the full gospel preached the last day of last December at Marquand, Mo. by dear Bro. R. M. Haynes, and gladly accepted the whole truth. And since that time have been traveling with him and Sister Haynes in the gospel work. I have been saved over five years, and during most all that time I was preaching in the F. W. B. sect, and succeeded in keeping real salvation, and contended earnestly for the glorious doctrine of sanctification as a second definite work of grace. And like many other poor deluded souls in sectism, though I was contending earnestly for the faith once delivered unto the saints; and while I knew the Bible taught the unity of the saints, did not know how to get at it. I tried the Holiness Union line a while, but found it like all the other sectish lines in Babylon, not going in the right direction. I was disgusted with hellish pride, bigotry, and other corruptions, but did not see how to remedy the thing, as I had no light on the sin of division. And while I did seem to discern the body of Christ, I did not see row to get out. But oh how I praise God for sending one of his anointed ones to teach me! and oh, what joy and freedom it brings to my soul, when I think that the dear Lord has permitted (even a poor deluded soul that I was) to get into the full light of the glorious gospel of Christ where I can stand, realizing there is not a single sectish tie or band separating me from God’s little ones, on earth or in heaven, except what they themselves here put between us! Praise the dear Lord, and oh what joy to be identified with a people who all speak the same thing and thereby glorify God with one mouth and one mind! But it has not made me popular among the people of Babylon and (specially the priests). But no real saint is wanting popularity only just such as comes through doing God’s will.

And now I want to say for the glory of God, that while accepting the evening light has brought reproach and persecution upon me, along with this, my dear Savior has don great things for myself and family; and when the Lord showed me he had sent a real man of God to teach us the way, I called Bro. H. and wife to come and lay hands on my little nine-year-old daughter, and ask God to heal her of an eye trouble of three years standing, which gave her much pain. Doctors could not cure it, but praises be to the great Physician, he heard the prayer of faith and healed her ear. And I want further to say for his glory that he has healed others of my family. He healed my wife of a pain in her back and also healed our little ones of colds and other ailments. He also healed me at different times while out in the work for God. He has taught me that I need no doctor or medicines for myself and family. Bless his name forever! and now dear saints one and all, I ask your special prayers for me, and my dear wife and little ones, that God may keep us very meek and humble, and use us for his glory.

Bro. and Sister Haynes and myself began meeting here last night, with a fair congregation and good attention. The truth has never been preached here. Dear ones, pray God’s blessings on the work. Also pray God’s special guidance on us, as I have been feeling as though God’s will is that we should separate ere long and I go alone in the work. Your brother saved, and sanctified, and kept by his power.

R. B. Hicks.
