Biblical Trace of The Church.

_____

The light of the pure apostolical dawning,
Shone forty and two hundred years in the morning,
After the Savior ascended above;
To preach the pure word of God free from perversion,
Rejecting the schisms of man with aversion,
Preachers went forward with hearts filled with love.

Then after the age in which truth had abounded,
At noonday the great source of light was confounded,
Heavenly satellites cease to give light.
Salvation in Christ which to all sin is rival,
The holy and heaven-descended old Bible,
Popery hid from humanity’s sight.

Twelve hundred and sixty long years did the Popedom,
Prevail against Jesus Christ’s heavenly kingdom.
Autodates often lit up the skies.
While slums of the Papists were holding their rallies,
Were tortured, the saints, upon racks, wheels and galleys.
Memory’s volume recordeth their cries.

The reign of king Babel not ended in Gog,
There followed three hundred and fifty years fog;
After the gospel had wounded the beast.
A mixture of gospel and error was preached,
For the church the apostolic plane had not reached,
Magog divisions were ever increased.

The Word and the Spirit whom Gog had oppressed,
By whose dark command they in sackcloth were dressed,
Magogites killed, not obeying their voice.
And after these prophets of heaven were slain,
The human inventions could peacefully reign.
Protestants therefore did greatly rejoice.

The end of the two thousand three hundred days,
Were finally reached and the angelic rays,
Heaven poured forth as in ’postolic times.
The witnesses slain, God did suddenly quicken:
The Magogite captains with horror are stricken,
Evening, so welcomed by saints, was sublime.

Prince Michael ’rose ’gainst the dragon did fight;
Soon put ho the armies of Magog to flight,
Cast out of heaven for aye:
A union in Magog then organized Satan;
To persecute Zion and regain his station.
Michael’s army again gained the day.

The earth ope’d her mouth then to swallow the flood;
While many got under the all-cleansing blood.
Zion increased to a great multitude.
Satan who saw he was greatly defeated,
In wrath made an oath that lie would not be cheated:
Thought up a scheme to destroy all the good.

Now this is the plan which he thought would defeat God:
Ho welded a link to unite Gog with Magog;
Compassing Michael’s army about.
The kings and their armies all came to the vail,
With one voice approved of the infernal plan.
Beelzebub’s army endeavored to shout.

Thus hemmed in, the prospects of Zion looked blue:
But Michael marshaled the good and the true.
Beelzebub’s army soon wanted to quit.
His army was captured, commander and all,
Which caused his whole kingdom forever to fall:
He and his army consigned to the pit.

BE FAITHFUL.

_____

EVERY man’s work shall be made manifest; for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.

Dear brethren, remember our work shall be tried in the fire; and how careful we should be how we build, that our work may stand in the day of judgment! Oh! how important it is that we remain faithful and keep low and humble at the feet of Jesus each day of our lives. It is of much importance that we get saved, but it is of the utmost importance that we keep saved. Oh! what careful watching and praying, and what a complete consecration it requires to keep under the blood. Sometimes the way seems rough, and the conflict with the enemy is fierce, the battle against sin rages in great fury, and it seems sometimes as if we were about to be overpowered by Satan. But let us remember, Christ says he will give us power over all the power of the enemy. Satan is doing all he can, watching every opportunity to find us off our guard, to deceive us. It is his business to watch every chance to deceive souls and drag them down to ruin. There are many battles to fight and trials to endure to try the Christian on his way. But remember we are to be tried in the fire, and nothing but the gold, silver and precious stone’s will stand the fire. Sometimes it seems as if all the powers of hell were turned loose to try our faith. But remember the Word says, the trial of our faith is more precious than gold; and also, that he will not suffer us to be tempted above that we are able.

How often have we seen a soul converted to God, and for a time all seemed bright; the joys of heaven seemed to fill his soul, and there would be a continual rejoicing in the heart for days, and sometimes for weeks. Then the trials come, and alas, they would flee at the first fire of the enemy; the wood, hay or stubble was soon consumed; or like the seed sown among thorns or on stony ground, was choked out by the cares and riches of the world, or having not much root soon withered away. Not every one that saith Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Oh! my brethren, it is of all importance that we hold out faithful unto the end. There is no promise unless we run to the end of the race. If we allow ourselves to be overcome by the enemy, or get discouraged and faint ay the way, or stop in the middle of the race, we have no promise. “But he that endureth unto the end, the same shall be saved.” “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” — 2 Cor. 15:58. “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” Eph. 6:12-19.

Oh dear ones, how important it is that we stand true to Christ! The welfare of our immortal souls depends upon it, and no doubt, the eternal happiness or misery of many other precious souls who are watching our daily life. Let us be very careful and prayerful, lest by our negligence some soul may stumble and be forever lost. Are we living continually, each day ready, waiting for the appearing of our Lord and Master? Are all things ready? Is our house set in order, swept and garnished? or are we sometimes careless, and neglect to watch and pray? Oh what an awful thing it would be if the Lord were to come and find us off our guard! And yet how many thousands are going on, making a profession, whose minds are more on the things of this life than on things spiritual, and appear to be more concerned about the affairs of this life than about their souls’ welfare.

There is but one great object to be gained, and that is to make our calling and election sure. There is but one great question which is far above all others, and that is, to do the will of God. Oh! if this should only be the means of getting one careless professor to constantly watch and pray, I would be well paid for writing this article. There may be times when the way seems hard, and we appear to be tried by Satan on every side; but let us not give up, but hold out faithful unto the end. A few more days of toil and trial, a few more persecutions, then all is over and we shall go to meet our Savior and shall hear the welcome applause, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant, thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many.”

BIBLE SALVATION vs MODERN SPIRITUALISM.

The Doctrine of the Bible arrayed against the Doctrine of Devils.

_____

SPIRITUALISTS say that “the spiritualism of the present day is that which Jesus preached eighteen centuries ago.” But we can prove by the very teachings and utterances of Spiritualists, that the difference between Christianity, as taught in God’s word, and modern Spiritualism, is as wide as the gulf separating Lazarus from the rich man.

WHAT IS BIBLE SALVATION? “Salvation is the redemption of man from sin and liability to eternal death, and the conferring on him everlasting life.” Webster. “Godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation.” — 2 Cor. 7.

WHAT IS SPIRITUALISM? “Spiritualism is a synonym of all falsities and lies; a cloak for all kinds of crimes: adultery, murder and lust; it weakens man’s intellect and individuality; changes his worship of God to a worship of ghosts.”

“Spiritualism is all eye and head, no soul and heart; all intellect, no emotion; all philosophy, no religion; all spirit, no God. The anti-Bible, anti-God, anti-Christian spiritualism, I have perfectly demonstrated to be subversive, unrighteous, destructive, disorderly and irreligious: consequently to be shunned by every true follower of God and holiness.

“Every crime in the calendar has been committed by mortals moved by viewless beings. Adultery, fornication, suicides, desertions, unjust divorces, prostitution, abortion, insanity: * * * I charge all these to scientific spiritualism. * * * It has banished peace from happy families, separated husbands and wives, and shattered the intellects of thousands. It is destructive of all we hold most dear, and cherish most sacredly.”

“I have a volume of sixty closely written pages of names of those who have been drawn down from respectibility, morality, wealth and intelligence, to the filth of freelove, poverty, and to insanity itself.”

The foregoing is the testimony of Dr. P. B. Randolph, who was “a medium about eight years,” “made 3000 speeches,” and was “in a trance state about 2500 times,” and knows what he is talking about. Dr. Randolph renounced Spiritualism at one time, but was again ensnared. Dear reader, take warning! Few, if any, of those who are caught in the awful drag-net of Spiritualism ever escape, but are forever held in its deadly embrace, and go down to hell, there to spend endless ages of eternal night among the demons that seduced them. “But God hath provided some better thing for us.” He “hath laid help upon one who is mighty.” He has “opened a fountain to the house of David, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.” “Ho, every one that thirsteth, Come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money: Come ye, buy and eat; yea, come buy wine and milk, without money and without price.” Isa. 55:1. “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow: though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” Isa. 1:18. “Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, traveling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.” Isa. 63:1. “Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” Psa. 51:7. How grand the plan of God’s salvation! Oh that all “might be able to comprehend with all saints, what is the breadth and length, and depth, and height: and to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge that they might be filled with the fulness of God.”

God made man in his own image, pure and holy. Adam through transgression fell, and plunged the whole world into misery and death. “Wherefore as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin: and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” Rom. 5:12. God devised the plan of salvation, whereby fallen man might be redeemed, ransomed or liberated from the bondage of sin, degradation and death. “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Jno. 3:16. Oh the depth of the riches, both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” He could have said, “I will go down to yonder world, I will leave the glories of my celestial surroundings, and take upon myself the form of mortal man; I will walk among them, and tell them over and over again, of Father’s love for fallen man; I will give my life for them, and purchase back the freedom they have lost.”

He came. “The people that walked in darkness saw a great light.” “That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.” Jno. 1:9-11. How sad the change since God placed man in the garden of Eden! He had become proud, arrogant and haughty. “The world by wisdom knew not God.” “He came to his own [the Jews] but his own received him not,” but they delivered him into the hands of wicked men. He was persecuted, rejected and despised; he was scorned and scoffed at; he was scourged and spit upon; he was cruelly tortured — nailed to the cross, and died that we might live. He trod the winepress alone, and of the people there were none with him. But he found a few poor fishermen and others who were awaiting his coming; “the common people received him gladly.” And throughout all ages a few have followed the lowly Nazarene. They also are despised and rejected. “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” 2 Tim. 3:12. But they know that “the sufferings of the present time are not to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in them. Let us go, therefore, unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.”

Few are willing to accept this great salvation. Preachers of all denominations deny the power and efficacy of the blood of Jesus Christ to cleanse from all sin, and teach the same pernicious doctrine. “They be blind leaders of the blind, they shall both fall into the ditch.” But those who are willing to give up all, to part with their worldly possessions, in order to obtain the pearl of salvation, do know and do testify that the precious blood of the Lamb of God, is the all cleansing fountain that washes all our sins away; and that, by a second application, it destroys the carnal mind, and sanctifies our nature. It turns sinners into saints; soothes the sorrowing soul and heals the broken heart; reforms the drunkard and makes his home a heaven; prevents the wrinkles that come from worrying, and drives away dull care; turns darkness into day, illuminates the soul with peace and joy and gladness from the glory world; it purifies the heart and makes us perfect Christians; it brings eternal life and joy, and gives us victory over death. And praise the Lord, it is free for all till Jesus comes to judge the world in righteousness. The church of God is composed of saints alone.

But what of Spiritualism? “The Spirit speaketh expressly that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.” 1 Tim. 4:1. Since about 1850, when the devil sprung the soul-destroying trap, called Spiritualism, into active work, through the Fox sisters, its baneful influence has become world-wide. And to day it stands a rival to Roman Catholicism and Protestantism as an infernal machine. Its victims are numbered by the hundreds of thousands, yea, by the millions. Adventists and Alkoranists; Baptists, Buddists and Brahmins; Confucians, Campbellites and Catholics; Dunkards, drunkards and Episcopalians; “Friends,” Greek Churchists and German Idealists; Hindooists and Hebrews; Islamites, Jainists, Lutherans, Mohammedans. Methodists, murderers: Pharisees and Presbyterians; Quakers and Shakers and all kinds of quacks; Shintoists and Scientists and Booth’s Salvation Army; Theosophists and Tendaists; Unitarians, Universalists and dis United Brethren; Polygamists and Polytheists; Pantheists and Monotheists, “all shades of thought, all creeds and conditions,” are welcome here. The “Broad Religion” takes in everything, unwashed and unforgiven.

While king Saul obeyed the God of heaven he had no need of seeking the witch of Endor. Scores of preachers have left their pulpits, and hundreds of laymen have forsaken their God and are gone after men and women “having familiar spirits,” for the same reason, — they have disobeyed God. “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.” Isa. 59:2. They have departed from the faith and “have given heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.” Many who were once devout attendants at prayer meeting, who once knelt in prayer around the family altar, and were wont to repeat to their little ones the story of Jesus and his love, have been carried away by the awful delusive tide of Spiritualism, and forever engulfed in death and despair, even denying the Lord that bought them.

Presidents, governors, kings and queens, emperors, congressmen, judges, lawyers and doctors, are among the ardent supporters of demon worship. No wonder that Babylon is fallen and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit. Since a large number of the members of all denominations are Spiritualists; few are left in them whom God can call his own. “Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins.” Rev. 18:4. The Roman Catholics claim that nearly 700,000 souls joined the Mother of Harlots during 1893 in America alone, and that most of these were Protestants, but God is calling his people out from among the heathen (sinners). “Come out from among them, and be separate,” is God’s command. 2 Cor. 6:17. Vast numbers of those who once professed the name of Jesus, and testified of his power to cleanse from every sin, now deny his very existence. Yet in the very face of the astounding facts of history, which conclusively prove the fulfillment of inspired scripture prophecies regarding the near coming of the Savior, and the resurrection day, men say, “Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep all things continue as they were from the beginning.” 2 Pet. 3:4. But the Lord is not willing that any should perish, and he uses every means known to a loving Father to induce the prodigals to return to him. Dear souls, you that have wandered away from your Father’s house, he is still calling to you, “Return ye backsliding children, and I will heal you of your backslidings.” “Turn O backsliding children, saith the Lord, for I am married unto you.” Jer. 3:14. “How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not.” Luke 13:34. “And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion that they might believe a lie, who believeth not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” 2 Thess. 2:11.

Dear Saints of God: May the grace of God be with you all. We are praising the Lord for a present salvation, and free from all the deceptions of this world, in the one body. Praise the Lord! Garrett, Ind.

Dear Trumpet Family and all the Holy Remnant: We are praising God to day for a complete salvation through the atoning blood of Jesus, our Savior, which keeps us unspotted from the world and rejoicing in the hope and glory of God. Hallelujah! God has set up his kingdom in a few honest hearts at this place, men and women who were willing to take the reproach of the world, forsake all unrighteousness and follow the meek and lowly Lamb of God. Praise his holy name! We praise God for sending his flying angels to and fro over this land, proclaiming the everlasting truth. Some of the little ones here got their eyes off of Jesus by believing false reports on the children of God; others allowed a jealous spirit to come in and lost their peace with God. But the Lord sent Bro. Wm. H. Miller among us with the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ, which lays judgment to the line and righteousness to the plummet, and the hail swept away the refuge of lies. Yours in the one body, hid away with Christ in God,

Jno. H. and J. A. Merica.

And let all the saints of God pray for them and the good work.

About all the creeds of confusion set forth a millennium just before the second advent of Christ. But the signs of Christ’s coming appearing on earth, nearly all the sects have ceased to believe this part of their creed. But many of them have adopted instead the notion that the millennium will follow his second coming. As the signs of his coming overthrow the first delusion, so his actual coming will soon sweep out of existence the second. Prepare to meet God. “Now is the day of salvation,” and “after this the judgment.”

THE PITTSBURGH PRESS

of Jan. 27, published the following item respecting the affairs of Romanism.

CONCERNING SATOLLI.

HOSTILITY HE HAS AROUSED MAY HASTEN HIS RECALL TO ROME.

Rome, Jan. 27. — It is reported in German diplomatic circles here that Monsignor Satolli, the apostolic delegate to the United States, is to be recalled owing to the alleged failure of his mission and to his having incurred the hatred of both Catholics and Protestants.

At the vatican the circulation of this report is taken as an indication of a desire to combat the papal policy and create confusion.

About a year ago the pope sent this Satolli to N. Y. to act as his representative in the U. S., owing to the no small dissension and division between two great wings of Romanism in this country. The one powerful party headed by Cardinals Ireland and Gibbons, were for American principles, and the Common Schools, and the other radically against. The Pope having decided an issue between the two factions in favor of the Americanized side, the other wing was no little affected, and the dissension rather threatening. But it appears from this report that the Pope’s delegate did not mend matters. While we are aware that the crafty old mother of harlots has her eye on this government, and serious trouble may arise from an effort on her part to capture the same, let not your hearts be troubled, or ever believe that she will succeed. The wrath of God is hot against, and the time of her calamities has come. The judgments of God will be manifest against her anew at every attempt, to regain power. Since judgment is given to the saints, “they shall take away his dominion to consume and to destroy it unto the end.”

A PERSONAL EXHORTATION.

_____

Notwithstanding the just reproof that was administered to the Editor of the STUMBLING STONE in the TRUMPET of Jan. 18, we feel a debt of love to our enemies that leads us to personally admonish Mr. L. H. Johnson, in view of the solemn day of judgment. Some years ago you published a very false and wicked communication from Iowa. And when we met you at Rising Sun, Ohio, we solemnly and humbly admonished you for the same. We told you that no gentleman would be guilty of publishing slanderous reports against any man, at the same time not knowing whether true or false. You was not man enough to offer an apology for the rash act. And now you have given place again to the very devil through some of his most wicked agents. In this we know just what we say, being personally acquainted with all three men. Mrs. Wyrick has, since your libelous publications, published the honest facts that the only saint of God that had offered her any advice with respect to the relation between her and husband was one brother who told her she should not depart from him. And now, after the poor woman followed him up and tried to live with him, he abandons her, and seeks to cover his wickedness by charging it upon the saints.

The party in Indiana of whose dark character Bro. Byrum gave some account, when awakened to his lost condition last summer, actually confessed that he was guilty of the ungodly crime for which he lay in jail, about two years, during which time he professed to be innocent and saved. And now, a professed Christian editor opens his columns to such characters to rail on the children of God. Do you not see, Mr. Johnson, that you have acted altogether out of the principles of a gentleman? If you have any knowledge of your reporters, you know very well you were doing work for the father of lies when you gave your sheet to their use. If they are utter strangers to you, which is doubtless the case, then, alas! you evinced a strong desire to help cast calumny and persecution upon the cause of Bible holiness. O may God give you repentance of your evil doings. Just stop and think what you have done, Mr. Johnson. Honestly, would you think it a manly deed for any worldly editor, to publish communications assailing your character, if he knew nothing about their author or the facts in the case? Can you hope for the character of a Christian or even that of an honest man, when you are guilty of that which you would denounce as base and wicked in an infidel editor? You cry out with holy horror against the corruption of fallen sectism, but we honestly doubt if there is a regular sect organ on earth that would stoop low enough to publish such rank aspersions against anyone, when coming from the hand of strangers. Oh Mr. Johnson, for the love of your soul, we sincerely admonish you to repent, and become converted to God. And then having the fruits of justification, you will cease to speak evil of sanctification. But while you are thus led by a blind prejudice, and inward depravity, we can expect nothing else of you but opposition to the fire of God’s holiness. Neither can you from your low plane of observation see the highway of holiness; for it is “a way which the vulture’s eye hath not seen,” and “no ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there.” In the name of Jesus we ask, what improvement could there come to society if men were to come out of the sects, and take on your low plane of humanity? What kind of a church would that be that would follow your example? Every member taking the liberty to publish to the four winds tales of slander against others, without knowing whether there be any truth in them or not, or without first trying to find out the facts. Such indeed would make the lowest ward in the whole city of confusion blush to behold. All the devils in the pit of hell would have a free and easy lodging in her. They would all pass for good fellows as long as they proved strong anti-sect, anti-ordinance, and anti-holiness. The editor in such a babel, if possessing your utter want of spiritual discerning, and your relish for anti-holiness matter would be highly elated if the devil himself, hoofs and all, were to step into his office with a manuscript hanging on his horn; and the bad old fellow would find a ready place for the same if against holiness, as all articles from that source are sure to be. In such an institution the golden rule, “do unto others as ye would they should do unto you,” would have no place. “Speak not evil of any man” would be expunged from the Bible, and a clause substituted reading something like this, “Be ready always to publish every evil report against the cause and teachers of perfect holiness, whether false or true.”

As for us, Mr. Johnson, we are saved above all the tongue and pen of slander can publish. Instead of it hurting our enjoyment, “in that day we leap for joy,” as our Master told us. But our love to your soul leads us to humbly admonish you to get right with God. Oh flee to the blood of Christ, and get the bad elements taken out of your heart, which so loveth and publisheth falsehood. You surely know it would be an awful thing to appear before God in the day of judgment with these unholy deeds to appear against you. And the time is so short, and the doom of that day eternal. Therefore do seek mercy from God, through repentance and honest confession. We pledge you our love and prayers, and be assured we freely forgive you all, for Christ’s sake. Amen.

A CONFESSION.

_____

Ducthland, Ind., Jan. 22, 1894.

Dearly Beloved Saints of God, Greeting: And to whom may read the following lines penned from the one who feels under obligation to God to confess to all with the humility and meekness of Christ in my soul, that I am dead to self and all selfishness, and the meek Lamb of God sits upon the throne of my heart with full control of us for once, and the work which he has commissioned us to perform in this lost and ruined world. And beloved ones, if there ever was a time, as we run over the annals of the human race, that the humility and meekness of Christ is needed, it is now. Yet no doubt many of us may think we have had the same, but I must confess with all humility and a careful investigation of myself, and the kindly admonition of those who love me, I have not had the meekness in my soul for months, and God alone only knows what I have suffered while having a frail body. But whom can I blame? God? No! no! But the selfishness in my own heart which was covered up by the comforting dictates of the enemy of my soul, saying, you are all right and others are wrong, and by this I tried to stem the tide independent of all others, and it was not long till I found myself without God and almost a shipwreck, and like a mariner about to be lost. But when in the greatest danger Christ came to my rescue and said, “Set your affections [mind] on things above, not on things on the earth; mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, [unlawful desire] and covetousness, which is idolatry:” and “When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.” “Put on therefore as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercy, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering.” And beloved ones, as I have said before, by an examination of myself and the blessed truth, I found that perfect mortification had not set in on my case, and I did not have the meekness of Christ, and Christ was not fully manifest in all of my deportment. We may have some of Christ’s ways in our deportment, but to have the whole Christ, the meek Lamb of God set up in our hearts, means the killing out of all self, and selfishness; to suffer anything with Christ without a complaint or murmur. This I found I was void of in my soul, for if things did not go as I thought, I would complain and murmur; and wherein I have complained or murmured or talked against anyone before any of the brethren and sisters, or any other outcroppings in my life, I humbly ask your forgiveness, and to those who have kindly admonished us. God bless you and receive our hearts full of thanks for the same; and what we have said against you in any way we ask your forgiveness. But we feel like warning others who profess sanctification, and claim to be all on the altar. Dear ones, look into your hearts and see if the meek and humble Lamb of God, has full possession of you. If so, your life will be the life of Christ, exemplified to this world in all things pertaining to Godliness. This means much, and we pray God that all who may read these few lines may not throw this over on some one else, but turn an eye inward and see if Christ is dwelling there. And keep me before Christ, to whom I belong, in much prayer, that the meekness and humility of Christ may always be manifest in my life to this lost world, and my usefulness as a minister of God may be greater in winning souls to God and God alone. For the wise man says, “He that winneth souls is wise.” This means to win souls to Christ, and to him be all the glory. It is not for self aggrandizement. The meek and humble Lamb of God had no selfish motives in view, but the desire of his heart was to redeem souls and glorify his Father that sent him. He suffered much for the same without a murmur or a complaint. Oh may this example hereafter be found in the one that pens these few lines. And in conclusion to all those who are acquainted with us and know from whence we have been delivered, bear us up in much prayer, and we ask you to forgive us of all of what we have said and done against you. God has, and I know I feel the fire of the Holy Ghost in my soul this moment, permeating my whole entire being, and by God’s grace we intend to make heaven our home, cost what it may. And what we have confessed, it is to please the God we love and keep ourselves clear before God and man. Many may wonder at this, but honest confession is necessary before God. Yours in much holy love. From one who has come through a great trial, and by this confession the burden is gone and we stand clear before God with complete victory and the meekness of the Lord Jesus in our soul. Amen.

A HUMBLE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT.

New Hope, Ind., Jan. 24, 1894.

To all the Dear Saints Scattered Abroad, Greeting: We feel that the dear Lord would be pleased with us writing a few lines this morning, in the name of Jesus. First of all we want to say, we are dead and our life is hid with Christ in God. To him be all the glory. Amen and amen.

Over seven years ago the Lord saved my soul and wonderfully filled my soul with the meekness and gentleness of Jesus, and most every body far and near, knew that I was of a truth born of God; it was just perfectly natural and easy for me to

Page 3

live the life of Christ. And even now as I write, it fills my soul with glory to think of it, and from that time on my heart has been honest in every respect, always having a godly fear of displeasing the blessed Lamb of God.

But some time ago through neglect on my part; neglecting to watch and pray, the enemy saw his chance and thoughtlessly I would talk and make remarks about othesr that were very unbecoming to a child of God. Oh my God, how it grieves my heart when I think of it! And one thing or another began to make me watch others, and of course as is usually the case, when we are not just right in our soul we can see so much to find fault with. Then when taken to task for it, and our deficiency shown us, the enemy of our soul said, Now you have always been honest, and those who are accusing you are not right. So in this way I went along for some time, and as my natural disposition is to worry myself almost to death over trouble of any kind, I worried myself almost to death. My eyes were hardly ever dry, till finally I found the grace of God had completely left me. Then Satan did work as never before. He told me that I was just as well without God as with him, for I had no peace while I was professing among such a class of people, and I had better have a little peace while on earth and go to hell at last, than to have some one picking at us and finding fault all the time, but oh my God, what awful suffering and misery I would feel coming over me when I would think of such a thing, until finally the blessed Lord unveiled the enemy of my soul to me and just let me see what would be my doom if I did not cease to listen to Satan. Then I would think of my sister who had just started, and whose heart was almost broke over my suffering. And I really believe had it not been for her sake at times, I would have decided to never be saved again, but do all I could to oppose the work. I told husband I did not care whether he ever preached another sermon or not, and he had begun to feel just about the same way, and he had about decided to get a position somewhere and live as we used to do, independent of anyone. Then the enemy attacked my physical frame, and what I have suffered in my body this winter is wonderful. But deliverance has come. Hallelujah! Now I firmly believe this crash had to come, and I do not begrudge the suffering, although it was terrible. We have learned things by it that we could have learned no other way. Now I want to tell you we are dead of a truth to day and our life is hid with Christ in God, and I would just say when we got down for crucifixion of all self, suffering took place in awful pangs again which lasted for almost a week. When finally the last cord was severed, then the wonderful cleansing, comforting influence of the Holy Ghost was again felt in our soul. Hallelujah! hallelujah! Now one thing more I wish to speak of to all the saints: no matter how well pleased you are with a minister’s preaching, no matter how good you feel over it, never go to him and tell him it is the best you ever heard, or he does better than anyone else you ever heard. God bless you, this is not wisdom; it gives the enemy a chance to puff the man up and he may finally lose his or her soul over it. I have been grieved many times over such things. Now I want to say, for all mistakes and errors I have made in the past, I humbly ask pardon of all in the name of Jesus. The enemy has tried to tell me if I wrote through the Trumpet no one would ever have confidence in me again, but I know and am fully satisfied that any true child of God will never feel that way. God bless and ever keep those who profess his name true to him. Your sister, dead to sin, and alive in Christ,

Alice J. Dillon.

[Bro. Myers of California sent us the following letter having obtained the consent of the writer to have it published in the GOSPEL TRUMPET, however, when written was not intended for publication.]

Visalia, Cal., Sept. 4, 1893.

Dear Brother and Sister: I am praising God this afternoon for his wonderful love and goodness to me in the full pardon of all my sins, and because he now gives me the witness that I am truly his child. It is now clearer to me than ever before. Dear brother and sister, this language coming from me at this time, may seem strange to you, but I will explain so that it will be made plain to you, and possibly be the means of encouraging other professors of Christianity who might have been taken captive by the devil.

For a number of years, in fact most of the time since I joined what is called the Christian Church, I have been living in sin, and taken as a whole, they have been years of extreme wretchedness. Of course it is not necessary to state in what it consisted, except to say that it was sins that chiefly concerned myself and God only. And oh, I never so fully realized before how much Jesus is concerned about his children. I have now made restitution as far as possible in all matters that demand the same (and that is always necessary).

Now brother, I would not have you think that I did not try to keep from sinning, because I did strive always to avoid it, but the reason, I am now sure, is because I was not soundly converted to God, did not know the boundless love of Jesus toward me as I now see it, and had not presented my body a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is my reasonable service. Rom. 12:1. Oh, if we could all comprehend the full meaning of this scripture, it would make a great change in the lives of the professed followers of Christ, would it not? Or at least, if we would obey it. Remember that the above scripture means as I understand it, (and I have prayerfully considered it) to consecrate one’s life, time, talents, and this world’s goods if he has any, to the service of God: and remember Paul says it is but our reasonable service. Of course we would still be stewards over these things, but use them according to the will of the Lord and for his glory, and when we are in Christ and his words abide in us as he desires they should, we will better understand how we could do this. Independent of Christ our blessed Savior, it is impossible for us to do these things, but by submitting everything to him, and placing all on Christ, the Altar, as indicated in the above scripture, he gives us the grace to accomplish it; not only so, but when we are sanctified and made holy through perfect obedience to God, we are glad for all our possessions to be used of him and in his cause, which means the salvation of precious souls. Brother, does it seem strange to you that I should advocate the doctrine of sanctification and holiness of life upon earth? Paul taught it and why not we? Please read 1 Thess. 5:22-24 also the context; also the 3d chapter and 13th verse: then look up the definitions of holiness and sanctification. You will meet with a great deal of opposition and possibly if you even suggest that such a thing (blessed as it is) is even taught in God’s holy word. But should such a course by any one deter us from believing or leaching the truth as it is in Jesus?

I am exceedingly poor in this world’s goods, in fact we have nothing and I have no health at present; but if every man I meet should tell me that if I believed and taught the truth he would not give me anything to do for the support of my family, it would not affect me in the least, with the grace of God in my heart, as he has made us wonderful promises along this line. Please read Matt. 6th chapter, but especially 33d verse; also Mark 10:28- 30; Luke 12:29-32; and 1 Tim. 4:8-10. Now I am aware of the fact that most people are unwilling to accept these scriptures as they read, very many, because they have not experienced the same in their individual case. But they forget that the Lord’s order is first obedience, then we receive the promise. I know that it takes a strong faith in God and a great deal of grace in the heart, but it is our privilege to prove it by obedience to his will. Praise his name! A great many contend there is no benefit derived by teaching holiness of life, or that we can and should lead a life of freedom from sin; but whatever God’s word teaches us, brother, is certainly profitable to us. Please read 2 Tim. 3:15-17. Brother, I have a great many scriptures in my mind that I would like to present along this line of study, but I believe this is enough for the present. Now what I am impressed to say, is that God always means what he says, and my prayer is that we may all get so far out into Christ that we may enjoy the fulness of the blessings of the gospel of Christ ourselves, and always labor for the salvation of precious souls.

A tent meeting is in progress now in Visalia and God’s word is being preached in its purity. We are not able to attend much, but the Lord is wonderfully blessing me and others. I am very anxious to have you write to us, and if you feel an interest in these things you will feel perfect freedom in saying what you think about, what I have written. If you find it impossible to write at once, please give me father’s full address by return mail on a postal, and you can write us more fully at your leisure. Your brother separated unto the gospel,

Henry Jeans.

Gospel Trumpet: May God bless his true ones. Amen. Meeting closed north of Borden last week with good results. Two claimed sanctification and others justification, much prejudice removed, and a good interest awakened, etc. The M. E. preacher came out from Borden and tried to help the good work on, and said he and others were benefited, but that he never could agree with us on all points, and that he admired the position of doubting Thomas, etc., and in two weeks he would tell them what the Methodists believe about sanctification and divine healing from a Wesleyan standpoint. He don’t claim to have the experience and don’t want it if it does as much for people as we say it does. That is just why we like it so well, — because it does so much for us. Praise the Lord!

Dear Saints of God: We are all on the altar and at the disposal of him whose we are and whom we serve. The work is moving on. Our faith is expanding and consequently we see more and more of God. Whenever he wants to entrust us with anything valuable, he first puts us through the necessary test. The greater the trust the greater the test. We are learning the lesson. Hallelujah! Instead of becoming discouraged any time, we rejoice in tribulation, knowing that with it comes something valuable. In this manner we are becoming rich in faith and all its consequent blessings.

Souls are coming to God and receiving his benefits for both soul and body. The church is shining amid the confused babel of the city. We are well and happy in the glorious battle. All saints in different parts of Cal. who want meetings the coming summer will do well to let us hear from them and we will make arrangements to get the gospel to them if possible. A number of workers will be ready for the tent work. Your brother and sister set for the defense of the gospel,

Dearly Beloved Ones, Greeting: Our souls are joyful in glory. Truly we have a satisfying portion and precious victory over the world, the flesh and the devil. Amen. Our last report was from Windsor, Mo. The dear Lord blessed our labors there. Two consecrated for cleansing and one dear soul was born into the family of God, which caused much rejoicing, and the saints were encouraged and strengthened. We went from there to Galesburg, Kan. and held a meeting two miles from town. Bro. S. G. Bryant had already pitched the battle before we came. Some that had lost their experience got back to God and were quickened into spiritual life again, and the church was strengthened and edified. Brother George started from there for Anthony, Kan. but I went by way of Chanute and stopped over a few days and had one meeting while there, at a private house. One dear soul got back to the Lord that had lost her experience. Two others came for pardon. I trust they will not stop till they receive the fullness in their souls. We are now one mile south of Anthony, holding meeting, and God is working. Pray much for us and God’s work in these parts.

Dearly Beloved Saints of the Living God, Greeting: We can report to the glory of God once more, that victory is on the Lord’s side. On the 12th inst. we opened up the battle three and one-half miles northeast of Bremen, in the New Hope meeting house, which belongs to the reformed Mennonites. We found much prejudice and opposition and some professing to be saved, yet serving their god, (tobacco) and the false teaching of Stumbling Stone Johnson and others fighting the second work of grace and the ordinances. The whole community was in a deplorable condition, which made our hearts go out to God in much prayer and sympathy for the dear people, many having honest hearts. The ears of the prayer-hearing God were opened to our cry, and he answered by fire as he did for Elijah, before Ahab. The truth of God went forth and false religion removed, and God has established his own church in this place. During the two weeks meetings eight came to the altar. The false god was thrown away, and all the false teaching and the Holy Spirit took control. God bless them and may they ever be found true and loyal to their Redeemer. And we feel it would be to the glory of God for some one, who can talk and preach German and filled with the fire of the Holy Spirit, to come to these parts. You will find a welcome from good honest hearts, poor in this world’s goods, but what they have is the Lord’s. Any one feeling led to come can address Bro. M. Heminger, Bremen, Ind. The Lord willing we expect to be in South Bend Feb. 3, and remain as long as the Lord wills. Yours in much holy love. Address us at La Paz, Ind., Box 47.

Dear Saints of the Living God: We are praising God this morning for full and free salvation, which gives us an everlasting joy that the world cannot give nor take away. It has been some time since we have reported through the TRUMPET, but praise God he has kept us sweet in our souls and has taught us some precious lessons, for which we give him the glory. The Lord sent us to Denver last fall and it has been a winter’s schooling which we needed. We have wonderfully settled down in the will of God. Some of our lessons were dear, nevertheless they were precious and in answer to our prayers, for we prayed that God might settle us down. So we will not murmur though it takes some hard shaking and jolting to do it.

Bro. Phillips and myself felt led of God to go to Eaton, Colo, and went up there the 13th, and found that the Lord had preceeded and the people were anxious for salvation. It being a new country, the people are poor in this world’s goods, but praise the Lord, some of them are being enriched Wonderfully. We learn from Mark 8:36, that a man who has lost his soul, has lost more than this world. So it follows that he who saves his soul has saved more than this world. So one who passes from sin to salvation, has suddenly passed from poverty to great wealth. And praise God, we know it by a blessed experience; for we have a check on Heaven’s bank, which is unlimited and payable at sight. — John 15:7; Phil. 4:19. We began meeting in a “dug out” and private house, Sunday morning, and Tuesday night seven were down before God calling for mercy; others have been coming out since. Some have been sanctified and many are under conviction and have asked for prayer. God witnessed and approved the work by the signs following. In answer to prayer he broke up a dance which Satan had hoped would detract from the meeting, and in a few nights after, the leader was down at the altar for pardon. God also showed his healng power by raising Bro. Phillips’ father from his bed, where he had been lying for several hours in the agony of death. When every thing else applied failed to give relief, and all medicine was discarded, God’s children agreed on the promises, and glory to Jesus, the work was immediately done. He arose, dressed himself and and went about his work praising God. The immediate effect was, one soul sanctified and the faith of all wonderfully increased. We felt the Lord leading us back to Denver, and one of the brethren brought us as far as Greely, where we held meetings Saturday and Sunday, God giving us wonderful liberty in sowing the seed. The work is opening up there as well as elsewhere in the state, and we feel that God is going to keep us in these parts for the summer. We arrived at home and found the saints holding meeting at our house and all joyful in glory. Wife who had remained at home was praising God for salvation and for the healing of her hands, which had been so bad with salt-rheum for the last two years that she could not do her work. Every thing applied has failed to heal them but Jesus; and if our faith is in him he cannot fail. Praise his dear name!

We believe that God is going to open up the work so he can use two or three good consecrated companies in Colo, this summer. Let us live humble, dear ones, that we may be ready for whatever God wants us to do. Any one wishing meetings in Colo. or near, address us at the above place. We are ready and consecrated to go wherever God wants us. Your brother and sister in Christ, saved and kept,

E. G. and Mary B. Masters.

Dear Saints of God: I want to give you the obituary of my little one. Our darling Gay Harris was born Nov. 3, 1892, and died Aug. 28, 1893; aged 9 months and 28 days. She departed this life after five days suffering and went home to God who gave her.

By the death of our little one I can say husband and I have been saved to the uttermost, with complete victory in our souls, and are still advancing in God’s will. We ask all the saints of God to pray for us that we may be submissive to the voice of his Spirit, and stand firm for God. Your saved brother and sister in Christ,

J. C. and Adda Harris.

Died Jan. 28, 1894, George Kimble, of consumption. This dear brother had been groping in darkness for quite a while, yet God was striving with him, trying lead him into the light for about two years. But on account of his sectish friends and relatives telling him he would be talked about and made light of, he refused to. obey the Spirit’s call. Yet in his last illness a few weeks before his death, he called for the saints to council with him, which we did and read the word of God to him, and showed him the way of holiness. He gladly accepted the truth and walked out into the cleansing stream, confessed his sins to God, also confessed to his fellow men, wherein he had done wrong, and made restitution to the same as far as he had power. Although it being the eleventh hour, we had the evidence that God accepted and saved his soul.

QUESTION.

_____

Grand Blanc, Mich.

E. E. Byrum: Will you please publish and answer the following questions in the Trumpet?

  1. What is the state of a man’s heart who is justified but not sanctified?

  2. What is the change produced by sanctification?

  3. After one is sanctified has he all knowledge of right and wrong?

  4. Give scripture authority for Christian ordinances.

  5. Give principal scripture authority for a definite second work of grace.

Fred C. Rottger.

ANSWERS. These have been answered in the Trumpet in the past, but we will again briefly answer.

  1. It is in a state of innocency, as the new-born babe.
  2. John 15:2.
  3. The sanctified person has the Holy Ghost as a leader, who leads into all truth. Those who have and follow such a leader will be led into the truth. A sanctified person does not become infallible, omniscient nor omnipresent, but has a pure heart.
  4. There are scores of passages, but it is unnecessary to give but few.

BAPTISM. Matt. 28:19; Mark. 16:16; Acts 2:38, 41; 8:12, etc.

FEET WASHING. Jno. 13:8-14; 1 Tim. 5:9, 10.

THE LORD’S SUPPER. Luke22:17-20; 1 Cor. 11:23-27. Read Jno. 13:15; 14:15; 15:14; 1 Jno. 5:3; 2:4; Matt. 28:20.

THE HOLY KISS. Rom. 16:16; 1 Cor. 16:20; 2 Cor. 13:12; 1 Thess. 5:26; 1 Pet. 5:14; Heb. 13:24.

LIFTING UP HOLY HANDS. Psa. 63; 4; 134:2; 1 Tim. 2:8; Heb. 12:12.

  1. In Jno. 17:16, 17 Jesus prayed that his disciples be sanctified. The Holy Ghost is the sanctifier. Rom. 15:16. The disciples were sanctified on the day of Pentecost. Acts 2:1-4. In the 15th chapter of John Jesus taught that when a person is converted he becomes a “branch” of the true vine, and that the branch must first bear fruit, then be PURGED that it may bear MORE

Paul teaches in Rom. 5:1, 2 that a justified relation with God places a person where he has ACCESS into the standing grace. In Rom. 12:1, 2 he urges the brethren — not sinners — to offer their bodies a “living sacrifice,” etc. Paul in talking to the Ephesian brethren, Eph. 1:13, said, “After that ye believed, ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.” There are many more scriptures that could be given but it seems this is sufficient. God and his word have not changed, and if the same does not apply to us, let us lay aside our Bibles as useless, as we would a last year’s almanac.

What is the difference between the members of the visible church and the members of the invisible church?

ANSWER. The church of God consists of all God’s children, whether they are upon earth or whether in heaven. We who are here upon earth and can be seen by mortal eye make up the visible part of the church, yet our names are enrolled in heaven among that innumerable company of angels, (Heb. 12:23) upon the same book with the invisible members. We are all of one family and the Lord is the Father of all. “And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church.” Eph. 1:22. “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the Savior of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.” Eph. 5:23, 24. “And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the pre-eminence.” Col. 1:18. The Holy Spirit, the organizer of the church, is invisible, but the church which he organizes here on earth consists of visible members. A person becomes a member of the church by getting saved, or being born into it by a spiritual birth. While he thus becomes a member of the invisible body of Christ, yet it does not make him invisible, and if he keeps saved, he remains a member of the visible church until he ceases to be numbered among the living here upon earth. This change which takes place in his mortal body at death, while it makes him invisible so far as human vision is concerned, yet it does not change his name upon the heavenly record. He still remains a member of the church, though invisible.

For an illustration let us consider the family relation. My father had seven sons whose names were placed on the family record. One of them died, but his name remained on the family record, and while he is yet spoken of as one of father’s children, he is among the invisible. When a person is born of God, his name is written in the book of life, and Christ has placed him in the body as pleaseth him, it does not take a human organization or creed to make him visible. Then as God only has one church, all his children are members of the same, whether visible or invisible.

What are your views on baptism? Is it necessary to have it administered as soon as converted? and what form or mode?

W. H. K.

ANSWER: We believe in obeying the word of God on this subject, and follow the steps of Jesus. — 1 Pet. 2:21; Matt. 3:13-17; Matt. 28:19, 20. A person may be baptized as soon as he is Converted, or wait until he is wholly sanctified. It is well to fulfill the Word regarding baptism as soon as convenient. We read that some were baptized after they were converted, but before they received the Holy Ghost. “But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.” — Acts 8:12-17.

Some who have been led by false teachers into strange doctrines, or of themselves have willfully tried to wrest the scriptures, try to present the idea that water baptism belongs to the “carnal ordinances” which were nailed to the cross at the crucifixion of Christ. If such were the case, then Peter and John and the other disciples must have been sadly out of God’s order when they went about teaching and doing those things after the scene on the cross. But we find at such times they seemed to have the favor and approval of God. But some yet really have the idea that since the “carnal ordinances” were nailed to the cross, the only baptism given afterwards was the baptism of the Holy Ghost. For the Word says, “One Lord, one faith, one baptism.” Now the carnal ordinances spoken of were the Jewish ordinances, but those which Christ gave and established were not “carnal” ordinances, and what he gave were for his people to observe. He did not establish the Jewish passover, neither did he command his followers to observe the same after his death; but he did instruct them to wash each other’s feet as an act of humility and love, and break the bread and partake of the wine in remembrance of his death and suffering. The Jewish ordinances and those given by Christ, are widely different. The first was to be observed under the dispensation of the law, which period closed at the death of Christ. The latter was to be observed under the Christian, or Holy Ghost dispensation. Then as we find by reading the word of God that water baptism is one of the ordinances which Christ established, it is a duty according to the Word for every child of God to obey the instructions of Jesus and be baptized. This baptism does not set aside the baptism of the Holy Ghost, neither does the Holy Ghost baptism set aside water baptism. The one is a gift from God or reception of the Holy Ghost as an abiding Comforter. The other is a fulfillment of the Word, in the name of the Holy Ghost (Matt. 28:19.) and witnessed by the Holy Ghost, and the harmony is such that it does not cause a contradiction of the Word.

Jesus did not command his disciples to go forth and preach to the people and baptize them with the Holy Ghost, but they were to baptize them with water, and the baptism of the Holy Ghost comes when the requirements of the word are met. Sometimes it is received by the laying on of hands. Water baptism is sometimes administered before the baptism of the Holy Ghost. See Acts. 8:12, 16. And sometimes it is administered after the baptism of the Holy Ghost. Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? — Acts 10:47. Can any one read the verse just quoted, and then say that water baptism was one of the “carnal ordinances” nailed to the cross, to be observed no longer after the death of Christ? This was several years after the crucifixion. Now, either Peter was out of God’s order in teaching and commanding the people to be baptized with water, or ordinance fighters of to day are out of God’s order in teaching that people should not be baptized with water, for we fail to find any command since the time Peter spoke those words, that such should be done away. The instructions even to us is to follow the steps and example of Jesus. Even in the mode or performance of the same.

But what about the mode? The only mode of baptism the Bible teaches, is immersion. Immerse means “to plunge into.” “To be buried out of sight.” Eph. 4:5, says, “One Lord, one faith, one baptism;” the Greek renders it, “one immersion,” “one dipping.” Jesus went down into the water when he was baptized. — Matt. 3:16. Philip and the eunuch went down into the water. — Acts 8:38. 39. Now, hear the words of Paul. — Col. 2:6-12. “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him; * * * buried with him in baptism.” Bible baptism then means a “burial.” It means something more than merely pouring or sprinkling a little water upon the head. Such is not Bible baptism at all. If you were called to take some man and bury him, would you set him up in a chair and sprinkle a little dust upon his head, or take him and have him stand or kneel in a hole while you pour a few handfuls of dirt upon him? No, indeed! If you knew what it meant to bury anyone, you would put him into the ground and completely cover him with earth, neither would you dig him up and cover him up three times in order to be sure that he was buried. The only Bible mode of baptism is immersion, — a burial.

__________

THE CHURCH.

_____

WHAT IS HER NAME, AND ITS ORIGIN?

A. “And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name.” Isa. 62:2. Through the mouth of the prophet God said “He” would name his church. Now let us find out what the Lord’s mouth called it.

“And I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through [in Greek] thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.” While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.” Jno. 17:11, 12.

For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of [“from” Greek] whom the whole family [church] in heaven and earth is named.” Eph. 3:14, 15. The prophet said the Lord would name his church, and Paul says it is named after the Father of Christ. We learn in the above scriptures that the name of God’s church originated with him, — by the “mouth of the Lord.” Here are four references in the Bible where the name of the church is found.

“Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.” Acts 20:28.

“Paul an apostle of’ Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia.” 2 Cor. 1:1.

“(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” 1 Tim. 3:5, 15.

“Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God.” 1 Cor. 10:32.

There are a number other places in the New Testament where the name of his church occurs, but the above is sufficient. The church derives her name from God just the same, as our wives and. children derive theirs from us. Now, my name is Warren, and when I married my wife, her name became Warren, also. When our child was born his name was Warren. It would be a foolish question to ask how he came by it. We did not give him that name, he inherited it.

It is very reasonable that God’s church should have his name: — “Church of God.” The church is the wife of Christ, and it is right that the wife have her husband’s name.

“And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared, as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And Re carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal,” Rev. 21:2, 3, 10, 11.

What Jerusalem? A. Heb. 12:22-24.

In these texts we learn that Jerusalem came from heaven, and that she is the church. “And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.” Rev. 21:9. Here it is said she [the church] is the “bride, the Lamb’s wife.”

Who is the Lamb? A. “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” Jno. 1:29. “ And Simon Peter * * * said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living. God.” Matt. 16:16. “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort.” 1 Cor. 1:3. Here Paul calls God the Father of Christ. Therefore the Father’s name is God.

What does God call his Son? A. “But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever: a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom.” Heb. 1:8.

Here God the Father calls his Son, God. Whose children are Christians? A. “For ye are all children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.” Gal. 3:26.

In St. John 3:3, 5, 7, he tells us how we become his children, viz., “Born again,” or “Born from above.” [EMPHATIC.] The Christian has two births: one literal, and the other spiritual. 1. Born into our father’s family. 2. Born into God’s family.

Who is our Father?

A. “Wherefore, come out from among [sinner professors] them and be ye [Christains] separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.” 2 Cor. 6:17, 18.

Who is our mother?

A. “But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.” Gal. 4:26. The term Jerusalem is a metaphor signifying God’s church — the bride of Christ. If God is the Father of Christ, and all Christians are sons and daughters of God, are we not brothers and sisters to His Son? “There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him. And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee. And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren? And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.” Mark. 3:31-35. “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” 1 Jno. 3:2. A preacher in talking to a brother, said to him: “I must call you a half brother to Jesus,” Said the brother to the preacher, ” I do not accept your compliment, I am a full brother to Jesus;” and then read the above text which proves the fact. If we were half brothers and half sisters to Christ, that would make him out a polygamist, which would be an insult to God, and a scandal on the Bible. Half brothers and sisters can only exist with a step-father or a stepmother. We will not have the devil for step-father, nor party names for step-mothers. People tell us there is nothing in a name. Let us see. Suppose, after you and your wife are married, she dislikes your name and wants to be called after some other man, would that suit you? Methinks you would very soon see there is something in a name. Suppose a child leaves home and wants his name changed, does it not look as though there were something wrong? Just as soon as you take up with some other name, or church, than “church of God,” you displease the Lord, and have no license in the Bible to do so; and in substance you ignore the name of Christ’s church. How can you say there is nothing in a name? Read Prov. 18:10. I know there is no virtue in sect names; and this is why the Lord forbids and condemns them in the Bible. Instead of professors adhering strictly to the Bible name, they have substituted these other names. It you ask them whether they are saved or not, they will reply: “I am a Methodist,” “I am a United (now dis-united) Brethren,” ”I am a Baptist,” etc. Don’t you know that you can be a Methodist, U. B., Baptist, or be in good standing in any one, or all of the sects and still not be a Christian? Sinners and hypocrites can and do get into doors that men open, but not one can get into the door of God’s church without being saved, for Christ opens it and not man.

THE GENEALOGY OF SECT NAMES.

“Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred threescore and six.” Rev. 13:18. This number (666) has a twofold signification. It is the “number of a beast” (see Rev. 13:11, 12), also the “number of a man” (see 2 Thess. 2:3.). We will explain the number of the man first, after which we will show you the number of the second beast. It is said that the pope at Rome wears in jeweled letters upon his mitre, the following inscription: Vicarius Filii Dei. By taking the letters out of this title which the Latins used as numerals, giving each its numerical value, we have exactly 666. Both u and v were formerly used for five as you will observe in the diagram below.

Total 666

The above is conclusive proof that the pope is the man referred to in the above text. The number 666 doubtless designates about the number of Protestant denominations. We have examples of similar calculation elsewhere in the Bible. See Rom. 11:4; Ex. 12:40; Ex: 38:26.

Every human organism has been founded by some man, and they usually bear the name of their founders. Lutheran sect by Martin Luther; Mennonites by Menno Simon; the Campbellites (Disciples) by A. Campbell, etc. All the different names help to fill the measure of human ecclesiasticism. But some tell us they have a Bible name for their church: Baptist Church, Christian Church, Friends Church, etc. You can find Baptist (the name of an individual) in the Bible, but not “Baptist Church;” Christian is in the Bible, but not “Christian Church;” friend is in the Bible, but not “Friend’s Church.” Some people say “Saints Church ” is not in the Bible. True, but the church of holy people (saints) is in the Bible. As individuals, every child of God is a saint, but as a collective body of saved people we are “the church” People sometimes call us “Saint Church,” but we never accept the name. We are Christians as individuals, but as a church, the church of God. We are friends as individuals, but as a church, the church of of God. We do not adhere to party names, and sectarians do, and when we correct them by the Bible they get mad, this proves them wrong. The way sects are made is by taking some Bible term (applied to individuals) or principle and call a faction after it. There is no danger of running into a sect so long as we teach and practice the Bible and require people to live by it alone, discarding all the traditions of men. See Matt. 4:4; Rom. 3:3,4; 1 Cor. 1:10-13.

==========

Andersontown, Md,

Dear Trumpet Readers: I will write my testimony for the first time. I do know that I am saved and sanctified by a second work of grace, and I am out of sectism, cut loose from everything like sin, free indeed. Praise the Lord! Oh how I do praise the Lord for ever showing me the right way! And I realize the way is very narrow, and we have to lay aside the things of this world, for we are commanded to love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If we love the world, the love of the Father is not in us. I do know this world has no charms for me. I once belonged to the Methodist sect, but since I have learned God’s command to come out from among them, that ye be not partakers of their sins, I must obey and not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. There are people in the so-called churches to day that will say it is impossible to live without sin; so they are unbelievers, do not believe God’s word. It teaches if we sin we are servants of the devil. I praise the Lord that we can live here without sin. Glory to God for such a salvation!

S. E. Melvin.
