JUNE 14, ’94.

We’ve met in holy convocation
With God’s peculiar, holy nation,
To learn of God and his salvation
More and more.
We’ve met with Father’s “new Creation”
To offer praise and adoration
To God, for perfect separation
From Satan’s power.
We’ve met to offer consolation,
To point the way to reformation
To those in sin and degradation;
“Go sin no more.”
We stand by every declaration
From Genesis to Revelation,
Without a single cancellation;
No less, no more.

JUNE 24.

O what a meeting this has been,
Of precious souls made free fron sin!
From east and west, from north and south,
One heart, one soul, one mind, one mouth.

O how they “made the welkin ring”
With songs which saints alone can sing!
With prayer and praise from morn till night,
Their harps all tuned in the “evening light.”

We learned some precious lessons there
On faith. How God does hear the prayer
Of the heart made pure and free from sin,
When simple “trust” abides within.

We learned that “God works all in all,”
That “I” am no account at all.
God grant that “I” may be dead and gone
That God may do what may be done.

We learned that the church that Jesus built
Is not all “patched” like a “crazy quilt;”
“My Love, my undefiled is one.”
“Fair as the moon, clear as the sun.”

From all the gospel truth unfurled,
To rescue souls from this sin-cursed world,
May we each one profit, brethren dear,
And scatter seeds both far and near.

And of all the “gems” on land and sea,
Seek “meekness” and “humility.”
These two are twins from heaven above,
Whence also came “joy” “peace,” and “love.”

John E. Roberts.

ARE YOU WILLING?

_____

MANY there are that seek salvation, and when God reveals to them what they have to give up, are not willing to pay the price. For example, we have the rich young man who came to Christ and offered himself, and Jesus beholding him, loved him, and said unto him. One thing thou lackest, go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven and come, take up thy cross and follow me. And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved; for he had great possessions. Oh how many in this great world are not willing to pay the price, but would rather sell their souls to the devil for a few pounds than give back unto the Lord what he has given to them and get salvation. Truly the golden idol is a great idol to break down. It opens all the doors of sinful pleasures and widens the road to the pit, and great is the number that go that way. Ah! but there comes a day when, with all the gold they have gotten, they would freely give it all up to get this salvation; but it is too late then, it cannot be bought, for you rejected the salvation of the Lord, and like the young man, you turned back sad, not willing to pay the price. Dear ones, just stop and think. You cannot boast of to morrow, for to morrow is in the hands of the Lord. Break down, break down the golden idol and get this salvation that saves to the uttermost; for the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men.

Now there is another class who cannot give up the fashion book for the gospel. Truly all they seem to think of and live for is dress, and then parade the town and public places like peacocks, and go and sit in their fancy pews of the sect houses to worship and bow down to their idol god, Pride, and offer up their sacrifices. But the sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord; for pride compasseth them about as a chain. Oh may they cry to God that he will give them repentance, and that they may recover themselves out of the space of the devil, and break the chain and get free from the idol, Pride.

There are many others the Lord has been calling, but they are not willing to part with all. I know many dear ones that are seeking the Lord, but they have an idol they cannot give up, in the shape of a dirty black pipe. They are going to try and smoke themselves into heaven, for they say there is no harm in using tabacco. But God has said that nothing unclean shall enter into heaven; and that unclean takes in tobacco. I had a small leaflet in my hand on tobacco the other day; it was called the “Little Black Devil.” Then surely there will be no little black devils in heaven. Oh my dear ones, get free from your bondage and lay apart all fithiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word which is able to save your souls.

Now there is another idol that hundreds are not willing to give up, and that idol is sectism. They seem to be led by the false prophets and false teachers to bow down to worship at the shrine of man. Look around at what you call your church of God, your fancy pews, your gilded altar, your polished pulpit, and your choir who sing for pay and not to the glory of God. Look around at the worshipers in their silks and satins and golden trinkets, and see there, sitting in one of the finest pews, the brewer and his family, and knowing that on this Lord’s day his saloons are open and selling the poison that is hastening poor lost souls down to hell. And there in another pew sits that wealthy lord who keeps a number of race horses, gives champagne suppers, and card parties, and there in another sits the unjust merchant; and they are all members of this church. But it is a church without God. And it is true, Babylon the great is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

Now God has some dear children that have been scattered among these Babylon churches, and he wants them out, for God is sending out now his own messengers, and the message they cry is, “Come out of her my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.” Oh I do thank God I heard the voice of the shepherd and came out of the darkness, and was willing for the Lord to break the chains of the Babylon idol and set me free from all other idols. And with God’s help shall not be entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Your brother, saved and sanctified,

Robert W. Croasdell.

MATT. 13.

BEHOLD, a sower went forth to sow; some seed fell by the way- side and the fowls came and devoured them up. Those by the wayside are they that hear, then cometh the evil one and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. May all who have learned to watch and pray, guard against this enemy who comes whispering, If thou wilt worship me, all shall be thine. Be not deceived, God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap; for he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption, but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap if we faint not. — Gal. 6:7-9. God is our strength. Jesus said. If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it. We must believe in the promise of God. Thy word is truth.

Some fell upon stony places where they had not much earth, and forthwith they sprung up because they had no deepness of earth. And when the sun was up, they were scorched, and because they had no root, they withered away. He hath not root in himself, but endureth for a while. When tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. Jesus said, In the world ye have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. — John 16:33. I pray not that thou shouldst take them out of the world, but that thou shouldst keep them from the evil. — 17:15. Blessed Savior! He will keep us if we love him and obey his command. Then come, sinner, come, the summer will be ended, the harvest will be past, and your soul lost at last. Why do you delay?

And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them. He that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word and he becomes unfruitful. Je- said unto them, Children, how hard it is for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God. — Mark 10:24. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt and theives break through and steal.

But others fell upon good ground, and brought forth fruit. He that receiveth seed into good ground is he that heareth the word and understandeth it, which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some a hundred fold. If ye walk in my statutes and keep my commandments and do them, then will I give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. Your threshing shall reach unto the vintage and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time. — Lev. 26:3-5. Thou visitest the earth and waterest it with the river of God, which is full of water. Thou preparest them corn. The pastures are clothed with flocks; the valleys are covered with corn. They shout for joy; they also sing. — Psa. 65:9, 13. Let the people praise thee O God; let all the people praise thee. Then shall the earth yield her increase, and God even our God shall bless us. — Psa. 67:5. He that goeth forth, weeping, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him. — Psa. 126:6. He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity.

Good seed is sown every day. Some among thorns; some on good ground. If the heart is pure, broken, softened with tears of repentance, good seed will grow and bring forth a hundred fold. Thus saith the Lord, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns. — Jer. 4:3. May ministers of the gospel be baptized with the Holy Ghost and with fire, sowing the seed, word of God. And to God be all the glory and praise forever! M any pastors have destroyed my vineyard; they have trodden my portion under foot; they have made my pleasant portion a desolate wilderness. They have sown wheat but shall reap thorns; they have put themselves to pain but shall not profit; they shall be ashamed of your revenues because of the fierce anger of the Lord. — Jer. 12:10, 13. Ye have sown much and bring in little; ye eat but ye have not enough; ye drink but ye are not filled; ye are clothed but there is none warm. He that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes. — Hag. 1:6. Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew. and the earth is stayed from her fruit. I called for a drought upon the land, upon the corn, upon the cattle, and upon all the labor of the hands. — 1:10, 11. The silver is mine, the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts. — 2:8. May all Christian farmers and laborers in the Master’s field break up the fallow ground and pray God to give the increase. Some think my farm is all clear, all mine. Dear ones, God has a claim. The merchant, the banker, the fisherman, no matter what your business is; remember your time, your life, all you have is in God’s hands. He can take it from you. Make him your counsellor; ask him if you are in debt to Jesus, who has bought your soul and body. Money and the farm belong to Father. Think of his goodness and mercy. You can never pay the debt of love.

He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness. — 2 Cor. 9:6, 10. To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life which is in the midst of the paradise of God. — Rev. 2:7. Behold I come quickly, and my reward is with me to give every man according as his works shall be. Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. — Rev. 22:12. Amen.

Mary E. Allaway.

A WORLD WITHOUT GOD.

_____

How Monotonous This Life Would Be if God Were Not in the Hearts or the People.

He who does not connect God with his every-day affairs knows nothing of the true meaning of life. What a senseless, useless round of monotonous toil this human existence is, if it stands apart from the endless life, separated from God and from his eternal purpose for us. What a difference it makes in our ways of thinking, our interest in humanity, our power to bear pain and disappointment, when we realize that these days we are living in the body are really a part of and enter into the character of those eternal years beyond, just as really as childhood enters into the character of maturer age. In all his intercourse with men the Lord Jesus sought to bring the immanence of their spiritual world to their consciousness. He affirmed that the Heavenly Father knew all their temporal needs. He said he would not leave them orphans even though he left their mortal sight for a time. He taught us to say: “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” In heaven they “do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word,” and that is the grand ideal of our daily living upon earth. Not an impossible ideal, for our Lord never would have taught us to pray for anything which could not be realized.

It is quite possible to do earthly business just “as it is in heaven” — that is, in the same spirit — “doing his commandments and hearkening unto the voice of his word.” Quite possible? It ought to be quite impossible for a Christian to do business ni any other way. A man said recently in prayer-meeting: “I am thoroughly devoted to business; I love it, and I love it not because of what I may accumulate from it, but that I may use what I accumulate in the service of Christ.” Everybody believed him, for his life showed the sincerity of his words. That is living with a sense of the presence of God. Such living is ennobled. Nothing in it is commonplace. The details of business have a dignity and purpose; the soul does not grow narrow and sordid, even though the mind is intensely bent upon what we call secular pursuits.

Is not the earth the Lord’s? Is not this his domain just as much as the spiritual world? Are not the gold and the silver and the cattle upon the hills his? Does he not intend to make all these material things tributary to his glorious kingdom which he will set up in the earth, never to be removed? What folly, then, for us to live a single hour separating our religious life, as we call it, from our secular life. God is in one as much as in the other. Happy is the man that findeth this wisdom, and the man that getteth this understanding.

THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL.

Verna, Ill.

I am saved this morning. I have stepped out on the promises of God and am praising him every day for sweet peace in soul. I rejoice that Jesus saves me and keeps me. He says if we abide in him, and he is us, whatsoever we ask, it shall be granted us. I praise the Lord for the Bible. I am not sanctified. I want you to pray for me. Your sister, saved in Jesus,

Dear Trumpet Readers: I will try to write my testimony. We are still saved in Christ, and God sanctifies our souls. Praise his name forever! The dear Lord is still working in his church here. He has given us some wonderful witnesses of his healing power. We have been called to pray for the sick several times this summer, and God always heard our prayers. Praise his holy name! He saves both soul and body. Pray for us that we may be kept low at the feet of Jesus.

Dear Saints ok God: I feel led to write my testimony for the first time. I am praising God for the sweet peace I am enjoying and His wonderful healing power. I was an invalid ten years and I was healed completely when I met the conditions that are set forth in the word of God, and to God be all the glory forever. I take the Lord for our physician, for myself and children. Our little girl twelve years old had poor health this spring and had chills, and we took it to the Lord and she was healed; but the chills came back. There must be some cause for this delay of healing. I ask all of God’s children to pray that all cause and whatsoever may be in the way may be removed, so that she may be healed. There are none of God’s saints here and the evening light has never been preached here. I stand alone. My husband is not saved. Pray for him. The Lord is answering our prayers in different ways. He saved two of our children, our little boy eight years and girl twelve. Praise our blessed Lord! I ask all of God’s saints to pray as soon as you read this for the healing of our daughter. I pray that God will send some of His holy ministers anointed of God and able to defend the truth. We are all poor here, but need the pure gospel. Your sister saved and sanctified by second work of grace,

M. A. Davis.

Some desiring to send books to the school doubtless would like to know what kinds are most needed. Others having old books perhaps do not feel like sending them, thinking they will not be the kind used in the school. We give the following named books that are really needed at present: 20 Bibles, 10 Harper’s First, 10 Second, and 5 Third readers. A number of Ray’s Practical Arithmetics. New Series; also Harper’s second book. We have at present a good supply of histories, physiologies and Harvey’s grammars. We thank the Lord and the contributors for their kindness in sending the books we have. Nearly all have been made use of, especially the advanced readers. School begins again Sept. 3. We are looking for the coming term to be one of great victory and advancement for God, souls saved and instructed in Jesus’ name. Our soul is deeply moved for the school work and we feel keenly the great responsibility of the work before us. We believe that others feel it as well, and look for much earnest prayer for the school. The Lord gives us victory, saves and cleanses from all sin. Your brother and servant in Jesus,

Clerance H. Dewey,
Teacher.

AN OPEN LETTER.

_____

Meriden, Kan., July 30, 1894.

To God’s Dear Suffering Children: May God bless each of you and help you to “rejoice evermore,” even amid your distresses.

My mind has been directed to a certain theme in the subject of healing, and as I believe the Lord wants to bring it before your minds for your spiritual and physical good, I thought a little letter to you would be pleasing to God.

How the blessed Lord within my heart does sympathize with those whose bodies are racked with pains, aches and weakness, or with those who have no use of some parts of the body! The dear loving Lord is more willing to give us good things than we are to give to our dear children. Oh dear ones, so few do really believe this precious promise in its fullness.

How wonderful and strange ofttimes are God’s ways with individuals! sometimes not understood by us until long after the object is attained for which God has been working in his own blessed way.

I have never been an extreme sufferer, but the dear Lord has many times healed me of different afflictions, sometimes instantly and at other times gradually.

When afflictions come upon myself or children, I firmly believe God has permitted them for a purpose. Then I go to God in humble prayer to show me just what that purpose is, if it will be for his glory and my good. So a firm trust brings some very necessary lessons to be learned. So by God’s help they are learned, and then can ask God to remove the affliction, and he never fails to do so. We may be saved and walking up to all the light we have, yet God has some very important lessons for us to learn to prepare us for the work he desires us to be fitted for to glorify himself.

To give an illustration: Several years ago I was taken with La Grippe and would be in great distress, then would call mightily on God and soon be graciously relieved and trust I was healed. In a few days another attack in some different way would again prostrate me. But when courage would come to go to him again he would deliver me out of my distresses. Finally after six weeks of suffering, one Sunday morning, while the family were at meeting, I was violently attacked with extreme suffering, but it seemed to me that a kind and loving Father was whipping me, and I cried to God to teach me, to show me why it was permitted; and as I waited before him, the Lord said, “Because ye call evil good” by not discerning “between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.” Mal. 2:17, and 3:18. Then I looked to him to show me how I had done this, and my mind was directed to two sisters who had quarreled over their children. When they were reproved one absented herself from meeting and made no profession. The other came and was more earnest in prayer, testimony, etc., and gradually, though I could not understand it, I had come to receive her as a child of God. But God showed me there could be no quarreling between two without both are guilty, and this one was covering it up. Then I promised to do what God showed me and He gave me strength to rise from my bed, after a day of fasting and prayer, and go to meeting; and in testifying I quietly said that God had shown me that we could not receive the testimony of those who quarreled, as being children of God. As soon as the testimony was ended she arose, danced up the aisle, and threw a great letter in my lap, — behaved so unseemly that the evil spirit was easily understood. On reading the letter it was found to be full of abuse of God’s little ones. God wanted me to learn a lesson of discernment between good and evil spirits. From that time I was healed, the disease never returning. Now the first thing is to learn my lesson and then I can trust.

One other point is to be so exercised by our sickness as to be more spiritual, to draw nearer to God in prayer and deep devotion, resisting all worldliness or the excusing ourselves from the exertion of spiritual understanding.

Sometimes we may be afflicted for the good of our friends, but he will also make this clear, and will heal us to exalt himself before the unsaved to lead them to repentance. Oh bless the Lord! how good! how merciful! Truly our souls should be filled with deeper gratitude and greater love. May this be blessed to some one’s temporal and spiritual good. Amen. Yours in Jesus,

Jennie C. Rutty.

Little York, Ind., July 23, 1894.

To all God’s People Greeting: We are glad to report for the Lord, perfect victory, in the deliverance of precious souls from sin and sectism, also, for giving me strength to labor night and day for the salvation of the people. The Little York meeting was a success for God, despite the devil’s snares set before the meeting to make it a failure. At this place about all of God’s dear people had fallen a prey to the enemy. Quite a number of sinners, sectarians and backsliders were gloriously justified and sanctified. Eight or nine of them were baptized and several others would have been had they been ready. We enjoyed a precious ordinance meeting with about thirty-one happy victorious saints. The people looked on the sacred scene tor the first time with wonder, but conviction was depicted in their faces. May the dear brethren have learned by past lessons how to stay in the Lord, in spite of the devil. Rebelious hearts to this way, were changed in favor of the truth before the meeting closed. We all were disapointed because Bro. Speck could not come and help us, but God was glorified to let us tight the battle alone in his name and strength. In this meeting we learned many precious and practical lessons. Praise God for the glorious advancment our soul is making in the onward move of this last reformation. I go from here by way of home to the LaRue, Ohio meeting, where I expect to meet Bro’s Speck and Schell. Having been alone in singing, preaching, praying altar work we shall appreciate help. Pray much for me, that I may be kept humble, in sowing seed and gathering sheaves for Jesus.

Dearly Beloved Saints: Great grace and peace be yours continually through Christ. Amen. Since the camp meeting Bro. Hunter and I have been visiting the saints at St. James, Mo., and in the country near there. Found the work moving very slow. Sorry to say that a great many who were once saved are now in their sins. And of course, a continual complaining about hard times only makes matter worse. If people would get saved and live for God, In the days of famine, they shall be satisfi-

ed. Ps. 37:19. We had a few good meeting in the name of Jesus and a few souls got saved. Praise the Lord! Sorry, we could not fill all the calls that we received, before we had to leave. Hope the Lord will send some good workers in that part to spend the winter. God bless all the dear saints and people generally, for their kindness to us.

Dear Bro. Hunter left me to day on his way westward to join his brother and sister in the work. May God bless them with constant victory. Since Bro. Hunter has gone I have no one but Jesus to accompany me to Kentuckey where I expect to be in one week, the Lord willing. We hope that dear Bro. Warner will not fail to come to the Dodge meeting, Sept. 5-11, and I pray God to send dear Bro. Lundy to join me in the work, in the south, if it be his will. However I shall not allow myself to feel disappointed if I have to go alone with Jesus. Praise his name forever! Please remember me in your prayers, that God direct in all things and use me to his own glory. Amen. My address till Sept. 10 will be Dodge, Clark Co., Ky. Yours in the one body, contending for the faith.

To all the Dear Saints: Praise the Lord! O my soul. May the riches of divine love fill our very being; and keep us clear above the cloud of adversity, that now overshadows our land and nation. Glory to God! This evening light is far above the cloud of sin and darkness, that so engenders, and harrasses the minds of the people of this age. Oh I am so glad I have salvation. Truly too many passes by, this city is likened unto a Sodom and Gomorrah; but peradventure God finds one or two of his own in it he will take care of his own. Wife and I are yet going from house to house, carrying the glad tidings to the few that are disposed to accept the light, and we are having meetings along the line of work that our God gives us to do, and we know that we are blessed every day. Wife is now able to travel some with me. Bro. Davis and workers held meetings at the Long Valley school house in the foot hills for some time. I went unto him alone; spent three days in the work there. I had to return about the 9th of July to this place. I am not able to report the number saved. We are now asking the Lord for a meeting here in September. July and August are the hot months here; the trade winds are very favorable to us that have to stay in the valley. Love to all the saints. Pray for us. I have not been to Porterville since May 12. Expect to go soon. Yours in the one body, saved and kept by power divine,

Dear Saints: Since our last report we have held meeting in a number of places. Have truly had many precious seasons in the Lord. Began meeting July 14 near Ceylon, Ind. Had some precious meetings for a few days which resulted in the salvation of one soul; also baptized one while there. From there went to Puena Vista, Ind. and held a few days meeting in a grove where we were called sometime before to pray with a sister that was afflicted with a cancer and the physicians had pronounced incurable. She having heard of the saints of the living God, sent for us, with whom we prayed, and at the present time the cancer to all appearance is removed. She is gaining rapidly. In this meeting, the people generally acknowledged the truth, as we found quite a spiritual people, especially among the Germans, though none stepped out into the full light of truth except one dear brother who had backslidden. But we believe there are quite a number there to be gathered into the fold.

Your saved brother and sister,

Dear Trumpet Readers: God bless you all. We are glad once more to report a glorious victory for Jesus. God is keeping us sweetly saved from all sin, and the precious blood does sanctify us wholly. Praise his name!

Our last report was from Blount Co., Ala. There was much bitter opposition to the work in that part, but the Lord saved a few souls who were willing to give up all sin, including sectism. We held meetings at two different places in that county. Five were baptized at one place, and one professed pardon at the other place. Many seemed to endorse the truth, and we hope much fruit will be gathered in the near future. We also went to Coal Burgh, Jefferson Co., Ala. and preached two nights in the’ village, and circulated some Trumpets and tracts in the name of the Lord, hoping that good fruit in the salvation of souls may result. We returned to Blount Co. and held a few meetings in the name of the Lord. The country had become so stirred, that a company of- about twenty men gathered and told us that it was the general voice of the community that we leave and not preach any more there, that we were sowing the seed of discord, etc. The crowd was headed by two sect preachers, one of which had not been to hear us preach at all; the other but a time or two. We were just ready to leave when this occurred, and we invoked the blessing of God upon them and told them we would return at God’s command. We returned to Arab, Marshall Co. and held a few meetings to the encouragement of the few who had given their hearts to the Lord. We then went back to Getup, Morgan Co. and held a few meetings. A few crossed over into, the Canaan land of perfect holiness. One who had fallen into the snare of the devil was delivered. Four who had been saved out of sectism since the last meeting held at that place, were baptized, and there seemed to be a general advance for God. We then visited the church at different points in Morgan Co., exhorting them to dig deep and make sure work, for only such as can stand the test by fire, can stand in the great day. We were sorry to find some backslidden, but generally they are standing true to God, but I fear not all advancing as fast as they should. Another who had fallen into the snare of Satan was set free. We are glad to say that the work in Ala. is steadily advancing. To God be all the glory. We are now at the camp meeting near Tullahoma, Tenn., and God is giving us a glorious meeting, though congregations are small, except on Sunday. Pray for us. Your sanctified brother and sister,

Otto Bolds and Wife.

Lauderdale, Miss. July 29, 1894.

Dear Saints of God: After a long silence I take up my pen to witness for Jesus, and can say to all the holy brethren that I have victory in my soul over all of the power of the enemy, through faith in Christ. I have been travelling over the old fields in east Mississippi and west Alabama, and am sorry to say that where the Lord has once done a good work in establishing his church, the people have gone into spiritual darkness for want of a teacher. I think the preachers of the holiness ranks do very wrong when the Lord leads them to go to a place and build up a work, to go off and leave them to dwindle away and die. For I notice wherever they have a preacher that will stand firm and declare the whole word, the church is in good working order and we find few such places. But we do thank God that we do find a few firm at every place, and now dear saints, this shows the need of more earnest laborers for Christ; at least more Holy Ghost ministers, and God has promised them. I closed a six days meeting with the saints at Quilby, Kemper Co. Miss, on last Friday. The Lord was with us in victory, enabling us to bury eight happy souls in the water, with Christ. May the power and love of God keep them saved, I begin another meeting with the Saints on Saterday, 4th of August, to last as long as the Lord leads. Also will begin one near Binnville on the 15th of August. Any holiness minister who feels led of the Lord to come to my aid will be thankfully received. The Lord is bearing me up, or I would surely fail preaching continually both day and night. Now dear saints, I need your prayers; I am poor in this world’s goods, but happy to know that I am laboring for the King of the earth, with peace. Yours saved and sanctified now,

Robt. A. Charlton.

Dear Saints of God: May heaven’s richest blessings rest upon you all. I am still saved in Jesus, and have complete victory. Praise the Lord! Oh how glad I am that my soul is saved! When I see the awful darkness on the people, and the awful prejudice against the Bible and the cause of holiness, it makes my heart rejoice that He delivers me from all the darkness and confusion of this world. My last report was from Colby. We left Colby and went near Quickville and held a meeting ten days in a sod school-house. There were two consecrations, and one followed the Lord in baptism, From there we came to Wheeler, Cheyenne Co. Kan., and the way being not clear for meeting, we went west near Jaqua. Here we found quite a large congregation that claimed to be out of Babylon, but Babylon was not out of all of them. Some accepted the truth and are walking in the light. Three came to the altar, and three were baptized. May God bless them and keep them saved. From there we came to Goodland. While here I received a letter from Dresden; so we went there and held meeting in a sod school-house. Here we met a number of our Quaker friends. This was a hew place. A few accepted the truth but would not yield. We were expecting to go to Denver so we visited the church at Colby and held meeting over Sunday; and from there the Spirit led us east instead of west. We next went to Norton. Here we found Brother and Sister Conley standing firm on the rock. We had a profitable visit and then went onto Almena. Here we found the dear ones in a backslidden condition. We held meeting in town in the U. B. house. The elder and deacon got back to the Lord. There were some new ones consecrated. We held a few meetings in the country. We next came to Smith Centre, and held one service and then came here, and commenced meeting in the Advent house on the 24th. We have fair congregations, good order, and good attention. We expect to stay here until Aug 4th, then go to Smith Centre and hold meeting over Sunday, and then go on to Table Rock, Neb. a few days, then to the Auburn camp meeting. Your brother in Christ, all on the gospel altar,

M. M. Stover.

Garrett, Ind., July 20, 1894.

Dearly Beloved Saints of the Living God, Greeting: We can report with victory in our souls, that the God of Israel is on our side. Hallelujah! After the June camp meeting we started for Phcenix, Ind. Stopped over night with the church at Kalamazoo. Father blessed our souls in presenting the word to a house full of attentive listeners. Afcer preaching the word we were moved by the Spirit to put out the altar, and three bowed before God. One for sanctification, two for pardon of their sins.

Next morning we took train for Geneva, where Brother Pronty met us and brought us eight miles in the country to his home. We commenced meeting in a beautiful grove all lighted up with natural gas. Opposition was great, but in a few evenings by the sending forth of God’s truth in love, the clouds began to move, and while in a very busy time of the year hundreds of souls came out, night after night to hear the gospel. Some came the distance of fifteen miles, and on the Lord’s day about one thousand assembled on the ground and the best of order prevailed. The time appointed for this meeting was ten days, but God shut up the way at Geneva, our next appointment, and in place of ten days, we were held over three weeks. A few souls were brought into the fold, and much seed planted on good ground. The last night of the meeting Father blessed us in commemorating the death of his dear Son before about three hundred, by the washing of the saints’ feet and breaking of the bread, and taking of the cup. God bless the little flock at that place and keep them true. One of the brethren that was saved was a dear soul who lived in the Baptist and so-called Christian sects for about twenty-four years, living up to all the light he had, but when the pure light of the gospel came to his ears, he readily accepted it.

We are now at Garrett, and in the name of king Immanuel will next go to the Deerfield camp meeting. Pray for us,

J. A. and A. J. Dillon & Co.

Blystone, Pa., July 21, 1894.

Dear Saints of God: This morning finds us saved, with victory in our souls over all the powers of darkness. About one month ago the dear Lord brought us to Blystone. We began meeting in the school house in the name of Jesus, which lasted almost two weeks. Brother S. Martz came and joined us in the work of the Lord; was with us three days at the close of the meeting. The Lord was in the meeting in power from the beginning to the close. It was a new place; the evening light had never been preached there. There were eight souls saved during that meeting, and two sisters that had been converted and raised up from their beds of affliction were sanctified. One had been confined to her bed for two years and the other one six years. At the close of this meeting they told us we could not have the school house any longer. There was a Seventh Day Baptist meeting house stood across the way, and the brethren felt that they could get that house, so we started a Sabbath School the last day we were with them, and they went on and had their meeting in this house and finally bought the house for thirty dollars. One hundred dollars will do all the repairing, and then the saints in this place will have a good place to worship. Then we went to McLellen’s Cor., and had a week’s meeting there. Brother Martz baptized four here and five at McLellen’s Cor., then he returned to his home. We came back to Blystone, and are holding meeting in the house here that they bought. There is great interest in the meeting, and the Lord is working. Four souls have been saved, and six have left the U. B. sect and are walking in the light as it comes to them Praise the dear Lord! There will be quite a number here to be baptized. We trust that the dear Lord will send some brother here to do this work. We have a Sabbath School here numbering about seventy-six. And the meeting is going on with good interest. Good congregations; some nights the house does not hold all the people. I think the house would hold about two hundred and fifty people. We ask the dear saints to remember us in their prayers, and the work here. Yours in Christ,

E. J. and W. G. Billig.

THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL.

Psa. 119:129.

Eastville, Miss.

Dear Trumpet Rfaders: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony for the first time. I am saved and sanctified through the blood of Jesus, for which I give God the glory. I was sanctified last winter, and oh what a blessing I have found in trusting in his word. I can realize his promises fulfilling in my soul, and a well of … … … … my heart. Oh, ..we.. … … … … blessed is every one that ..es the will of God. I have found it to be a true blessing indeed. There is none that knows what a deep blessing is until they get into that blessed fountain that is flowing for the soul. I stood on the banks of this fountain a good while before I plunged in. I wanted more faith and feelings; but at last the word of God came so plain to me, with his dear promises to me if I only would believe, that I just fell on them and sank down into his will, and I give my feelings up to Father’s control if it takes my life; for I had rather die in the favor of God than to live in this world without salvation. Glory to Jesus! there is a sheltered place in Jesus, from all the snares and temptations of Satan. Oh how it pains my heart to see so many around me going on in their sins, heedless of the danger they are in, hardening their heart against the truth. May God help the young to accept it, if the older ones won’t. Pray for me that I may sink deeper and deeper in the love of God and my faith be stronger. Your saved sister in Christ,

Martha Hill.

Sister Margaret E. Adair, who was formerly known among the saints as Sister Burgess, fell asleep in Jesus at her home near St James, Mo., July 23, 1894; age forty-one years. She was saved a few years ago, but afterwards fell into sin, and lived in a backslidden condition, till during her affliction, through much suffering the Lord brought her to himself; and she was sweetly saved in Jesus. Though her suffering was very great for about three months, she bore it with patience, and praised the Lord to the last, and said it was just. God bless her children, and all who feel the loss; and may this be a warning to all to get saved while in health, and live for God; lest the hand of affliction be laid upon them in like manner. Funeral services by C. E. Hunter, in the presence of a large congregation.

Our Mother dear has gone to rest,
Her suffering now is o’er;
The Savior always knows the best;
He’s trod the way before.

E’en though we miss her here below,
And feel so very sad;
We’ll meet again, in heaven we know,
If we have peace with God.

Then let us live for God alone,
Dive right, “and sin no more;”
And we shall meet around His throne,
Where parting will he o’er.

HOW TO OBTAIN PEACE.

_____

To Acquire Repose in God Means Unconditional Surrender.

Perfect submission to the will of God is the only condition necessary to the attainment of “the peace that passeth all understanding.” We can not possibly enjoy perfect peace so long as we allow our own will to stand between us and God in any matter. If we cherish the feeling that this or that gratification or the accomplishment of some particular wish is necessary to our happiness, we cannot possibly be at peace as long as that wish is ungratified. And we cannot possibly enjoy intimate communion with God while in such a condition of mind, because we cannot know whether the demand which our heart makes is in harmony with the will of God or not. But when we learn to believe that God knows best and to trust him unconditionally, then peace like a river will flow in upon our hearts; because then we know that nothing but good can happen to us. For it is written that “all things work together for good to them that love God,” and that God’s thoughts toward us are “thoughts of peace and not of evil.” It may not be God’s will to grant us the things which our hearts most earnestly crave, but if he does not grant our desire he will certainly make his refusal of it a means of very much greater happiness to us than the granting of it would have been — if only, we will trust him implicitly, and say from the bottom of our hearts: “Nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.”

TRUST OF GOD FOR SHELTER.

_____

Dearly Beloved Children of God: Once more we feel led of the dear Lord to let our voice be heard through the dear TRUMPET. We are happy to report to you that we are still saved in Jesus, and rejoicing in a Father’s love, with a calm sweet peace in our soul that flows like a river. O praise his dear name forever! Truly he has been teaching us precious lessons of faith, and trust, and sinking us deeper into him; and he is teaching us more the use of our wings to soar above the trying scenes of this life. Oh I find, dear ones, it means so much to trust our heavenly Father to protect, to guide, and lead us, in this present evil world; and to realize Father’s loving arms around us and his sheltering wings are hovering over us, while his loving eyes are watching the enemy to keep him from destroying and devouring our souls. I feel led to tell you about the vision the Lord gave me a few nights ago, and warn you of the danger that I feel is coming and is nigh at hand. And may God help his dear children to watch and pray that you may be worthy to escape all these things that are coming on the earth.

The Lord gave me a vision of a very large mother bird with a large brood of young ones which were not full fledged, only had down on them. While the mother went to get her food which consisted of ground wheat, I saw that a large bird something in form like the mother, went to cover the young ones. I heard a cry of alarm from the father bird, which came and chased the one away that was trying to shelter the little ones. Then he spread his wings with another bird nearly as large, and all of the little ones ran for refuge under the father and the other one (elder brother). While they both together sheltered the young ones perfectly, I saw the father bird casting his eyes upward; and I looked, and there in the distance was a very large black hawk sailing westward.

And when I awoke I felt impressed that this vision was of God, and was given for a warning to his little ones to take heed to God’s warning voice, and not take refuge in any thing else but God and his dear Son. As the two birds together looked like the Father and Son, and sheltered the young ones, just so we want to be hid away with Christ in God, and not look to any thing else for refuge. The devil is transformed into an angel of light, and would deceive the very elect if it were possible, So only in God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in every time of need. And while we are hid away with Christ in God under Father’s protecting wings of love, nothing shall molest nor make us afraid; and while Father is watching the enemy, to keep him away, we are perfectly secure and free from all danger.

You all, I presume, know the nature of the hawk, how he sails above, watching for his prey, and when he sees his victim, then with a downward sweep he lights on his prey, tears its flesh in pieces, kills and devours it. So dear ones, you who are young in experience, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not with flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the, rulers of the darkness of this world against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. See that you are perfectly hid away. He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say (says the Psalmist] of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings thou shalt trust. His truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Yes dear ones, God’s word is a shield, and while we are living and obeying God’s word, we have a precious shelter from all the stormy blasts, and nothing shall molest nor make us afraid; for he says, Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night, nor for the arrow that flieth by day, nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand, but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the Most High, thy habitation. So you see how safe it is to trust our dear Father. Oh what a strong habitation! Surely it is so safe to trust in him, whose all-seeing eyes are over the righteous and his ears are open unto our prayer, who knows our every need, and says he will supply all our needs according to his riches in glory. And Christ says, If ye abide in me and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done of my Father which is in heaven. For he is more willing to give good gifts to his children than an earthly parent is to his children. God’s word says they that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion which can not be removed but abideth forever. Trust in the Lord and do good, so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself in the Lord, and he shall give thee the desire of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday. Ps. 37. So dear ones, our judgment shall be very clear, discerning good and evil, and we shall know how to walk and talk, and be bright and shining lights in this world, and perfectly know how to trust God, and to teach others how to walk; and we shall know who are our brothers and sisters, and who are strangers. Oh bless his dear name forever and ever! But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice; let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them. Let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. For thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous; with favor wilt thou compass him as with a shield. O bless the Lord! I am determined to trust him for all things more than I ever have in the past realizing that Father will keep us all that put our trust in him, for he knows our every need. I am completely swallowed up in his will, and as one who has come up through great tribulation, having washed my robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb willing to rest beneath Father’s sheltering wings of love. May the dear Lord bless you all and keep you trusting in Jesus. Amen.

To the the dear ones that I have written to in the past, and would like to know of my whereabouts: I am now living on the camp ground at the Children’s Home with my children. I do not know how long I will remain here. Expect soon to go out in the field to work for Jesus. My address will be Grand Junction, Mich. Your sister saved in Jesus,

Lodema Lyon.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led by the will of God to write my testimony, as I have never written before. I am praising God for his keeping power, and for victory in my soul. How I rejoice that the true gospel has been preached in our midst. Praise God’s holy name! I was saved last February and my darkness turned to light, by the will of God. I am praising God for a Bible salvation that keeps me sweetly saved in Jesus. Pray for me that I may ever be faithful, and doing the will of my Master. From your saved sister,

Mrs. Ella Holtsbery.

I believe it would be to the glory of God for me to write through the columns of the TRUMPET and tell what the Lord has done for my little grand daughter, Nora Armstrong, thirteen years old. She is fully saved and sanctified and a great lover of God’s word. On Sunday evening of July 15 she was taken very had with a disease of the brain, and spinal affection and we all though she could not live till day light. But as soon as the saints come from Carmel, Neb., they anointed and prayed. God did fulfill his promise, and within five or ten minutes she was out of bed and went to the barn and had a good time with one of her school-mates that God had used her in saving. Some unbelieving neighbors said she was dying. They were surprised when she arose from her bed. To God be all the glory.

Dear Saints of God: I feel led to write my testimony. I am standing on God’s true promises, and he heals me and saves me in the name of Jesus. There are few of us in number, but the Lord manifests his power. We are praising God for the glorious evening light that he has brought here. It lights up my soul with joy, and leads me in all the ways of truth. Glory to God! Bro. and Sister Orr anointed and prayed for our little child which had the brain fever, and the Lord healed the child, for which I give God all the glory. We have been praying to God to send some of his holy ministers here, as we feel the need of instruction. The Lord is so precious to me. I love to talk of his goodness; he is all in all to me. I am glad that I am at the fountain of God’s love where I can ever abide. Oh how it melts my heart when I think how much the dear Savior bore for me! Oh how true to him we should live, for we know according to his wore he will soon appear. I ask an interest in the prayers of all God’s true children. Your brother, separated from all sects, and standing on God’s holy truth,

Dear Brethren in Christ: I write this testimony for the glory of God, that you all may know what wonderful things the Lord has done for me and mine. I can not thank and praise his dear and holy name enough for his great love and mercy, I have a dear little boy four and one half months old: and while in His infinite wisdom the precious Savior saw fit to take my beloved companion, yet in his love and mercy he has thus far left me this sweet treasure in an earthen vessel. The dear little one lad a bad breach in his navel, which, after taking to the Lord in earnest prayer, he did perfectly heal it, and it is just as sound as though it had never been ruptured. And now Jesus our great physician has wonderfully healed the dear little baby of a very serious attack of cholera-infantum, of alarming symptoms. This is the second attack of which the dear Lord has healed him. I have also been leafed several times by just stepping out by faith on God’s promises, which I always find are “yea and amen.” Oh, it is just wonderful what a Savior we have, who heals the body as well as the soul! Praise his holy name forever! Yours in the one body,

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of God to write my testimony again. I know I am trusting the Lord. He has saved my soul and also healed my body, and my faith grows stronger in the Lord every day that I live. Oh I do praise the Lord for this wonderful salvation, which is a deliverance from evil. I give God all the glory. I thank the Lord so much for His wonderful healing power. I believe that He has prolonged my life by healing me of palpitation of the heart. My friends used to say to me, You will die sometime with the heart disease; you had better stay at home all the time; it is dangerous to be away. I praise the Lord He has taken away the fear and dread of disease. If I get sick, I call on the great Physican and he never fails to come. I never doubt his word; he has verified his promises to me. I praise the Lord for the blessed TRUMPET, which I can read, and when I read them I send them away to my friends. I love to read the testimonies of the dear saints of the living God. It brings joy to my heart, and is a feast to my soul. Pray for me that I always may be found doing the will of the Lord. Your sister saved and sanctified, and kept by the power of God,

Dear Saints and Trumpet Readers: May God bless you all is my prayer. I am so glad that I am saved from all sin and kept from the evil that is in the world. Christ prayed for his disciples, not that they should be taken out of the world, but that the Father would keep them from the evil that is in the world. There is so much evil in the world to day to draw us away from Christ. Unless we are dead indeed unto the world and alive unto Christ, we will be drawn away. Praise the Lord, it has no charms for me. I praise the Lord for the GOSPEL TRUMPET which is food to my soul. I read of so many good meetings in the TRUMPET in other states, but cannot get to attend any of them. We have no free meetings here, they are all sects. have been asking the Lord to send Brother Henry here, but I dare not let the people know anything about it, as there are few free people here that are not entangled with the yoke of bondage. For whom the Son makes free is free indeed, and has no sect bands on. Praise the Lord for freedom through Christ Jesus and not through sectarianism! I can see more plainly every day the sin of the so-called churches. The word of God tells us if we sin, we are the servants of the devil. I am so glad for the light, not saying that I have more than anyone else, for it is for all to have. There was a festival at the church here right by us. How the people did swarm and consecrate their pocket-books to the devil, and how I could sing hallelujah, I am saved from such frolics, for they are all of the devil. I remain your sister,

T. E. Melvin.

To the Redeemed and Beloved in Christ: I feel led to give my testimony to the saints through the columns of the GOSPEL TRUMPET. I will begin by saying that since my fourteenth year, until four years ago, I lived in a denomination in complete blindness. At that time I know I was saved through the mercy of a loving heavenly Father, yet I was not satisfied, but did not know what I wanted, to get me where I wanted to be. I wanted a satisfying portion that could keep me, and subject and control my ugly disposition and keep me resigned to life as it came, but did not know how to take hold of God in such a way as to receive that blessing. But I praise his holy name, now know him better and have received from him just what I was seeking, and more, for he is so gracious that he blesses his children above all they can think or ask for. In January began attending Sunday school, where one of God’s holy men was teacher. He revealed Bible truths in such a marvelous way, that all I could do was to sit in amazement and wonder what and who he could be. I at that time being very little acquainted here, just having moved into this country a short time before. In a short time his brother-in-law came into the neighborhood, and they held meeting at the school house, laboring hard for three weeks. There were seven brought out of the denominations, some of whom found that they were not saved, and four were saved that had made no profession. Several of the number claimed the blessing of sanctification, and others are still seeking. The devil has manifested himself in full force in way of persecution and by enlarging himself in the hearts of the people until they would not allow our little band to hold even prayer meeting in the school house after the close of the meeting; but praise God, we let the devil rage, while we had glorious manifestations of God’s power both in saving and healing at prayer meeting held around at the saints’ homes. God is all powerful to us so long as we put full trust in him. I praise God to be able to put myself and my little ones into his loving care. He keeps me and mine, soul and body. I trust him for my all. He has saved and sanctified my soul and he heals my body. I have laid all medicines aside and he has wondrously blessed me for doing so. I was healed one year ago from the jaws of death, when nothing but the power of a loving Savior could give relief; which brought me to realize that I needed more light from above, and kept me hungering for it. And I can but praise his holy name continually that he sent inspired men into our midst to preach the gospel as it is recorded, enabling us to take hold of him as he wills his children to take him. And my whole desire is to so live and keep myself, that he may use me to his name’s honor and glory. I ask an interest in the prayers of all the saints, that I may ever be found faithful and willing to do the Master’s will, for I feel and do know that he has a work for me to do; and in order to do his will I know I must keep myself unspotted from the world and consecrate my all to him. And I am rejoiced to know that by the grace of God I have done this, not by any good thing in myself, but through the love of God. For I of myself surely am a very unworthy insignificant creature, and I desire to be kept humble and meek, ever found sitting at the feet of Jesus. I have been laboring under severe difficulties; had a heavy burden; and when God revealed to me that I must tear down every middle wall of partition between me and him, and also showed me a great wall that I must tear down, which I knew was a severe task, he seemed to say, Can’t you trust me? For if you cannot suffer persecution for my sake you are not worthy; and when I gave up and stepped boldly out for the leading of God’s spirit, I was given grace to bear each trial as it came, and to day I am standing fast in the liberty wherewith Christ has made me free. Praise his holy name forever for my deliverance! One of Jesus’ humble followers,

Nettie L. Shafer.
