All The Lord’s.

_____

Come thou precious fount of Heaven,
Fill our souls with light and love,
Now that we have been forgiven,
May we joy like those above.

Chorus.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
I’m my Lord’s and He is mine.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
I am saved by grace divine.

O ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to know that we are His!
And how much His smile doth please us,
Fills our souls with perfect bliss.

O what rapture in possessing!
Filled with love we can rejoice;
With our lips we are confessing
A holy life is now our choice.

Help us sing our Savior’s praises;
Help ns joy in Jesus’ love:
As we sing, our love increases,
Till we joy like those above.

Give us even tribulation,
A crown of thorns, or what you may;
We now have God’s approbation
While walking in the holy way.

Now ’tis glory, constant glory;
For we’ve glory in our soul;
While we live we’ll tell the story
Of the blood that makes us whole.

We have peace just like a river,
Strong and mighty, full of life;
Our dear Savior is its giver,
And he keeps us freed from strife.

Now our hearts are all contented,
And our souls are satisfied;
And our bodies we’ve presented,
With our Lord are crucified

Repent Ye and Believe the Gospel!

_____

TO repent, means to sorrow, or be pained for sin, as a violation of God’s holy law, a dishonor to his character and government, and the foulest ingratitude to a being of infinite benevolence. This is a godly sorrow, which by the apostle is defined in 2 Cor. 7:10 as a sorrow which worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of. The word repent is also used in a sense of a change of mind, a turning back. To be sorry for sin, without turning away from it, is not true repentance. A thief is sorry when his crime is brought to light, and he sees that he must pay the penalty of a violated law. So also with any other criminal. This is not true repentance. Such are only sorry from a worldly sorrow which “worketh death.” There are many heart aches and bitter tears, in this sin-cursed world, because of disappointments, crime and degradation, which in many instances, cause the poor victim to end his or her earthly career in suicide, while others become broken hearted and crushed beneath the dreadful burdens of such a wretched life, until insanity and death ensue. This simply proves that the sorrow of this world worketh death. Godly sorrow is much the reverse. While it causes bitter tears, and heart aches, because of disobedience to, and rebellion against God, yet the penitent and guilty soul seeks refuge in Him, who has been so ungratefully treated, whose commands have been so shamefully ignored, and his offers of mercy so repeatedly refused. Thank God, to repent with godly sorrow brings the soul to the cross where confession is made, and mercy implored. This is the first command that God has given to the world through Jesus.

John the Baptist had been warning the people of Judaea of the near approach of Jesus, and commanded them to repent. When Jesus began his ministry, he came with the same command: “Repent ye and believe the gospel.” The disciples when sent out to preach, both before and after Pentecost, sounded forth the command, Repent. In order that no one might be mistaken, and think that some are excluded from the divine law, the holy Spirit through the apostle Paul makes the sweeping declaration, that God now commandeth ALL men every where to repent. Acts 17:30. This leaves all without excuse. God plainly tells us who he means, and every sinner who disobeys this plain command will stand condemned before God, not only now, but also in the day of judgment.

CONDITIONS OF REPENTANCE.

In Isa. 55:6, God says: “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found. Call ye upon him while he is near.” You see here that you must both seek and call. But you ask, How shall I seek and call? God answers you in the next verse: “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts, and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him, and to our God for he will abundantly pardon.” You must first forsake your way. This is where so many poor sinners hesitate, and stop seeking. If you are not willing to seek in God’s way, and forsake your way, you will never find him. God’s way is, that you must utterly abandon your old life of sin. Your way is corrupt. Your heart is full of sin. You are a poor wretched rebel before God. Your conscience is defiled. Every appetite of your body is depraved. You have gone entirely out of the way of God. Your mouth is full of cursing and blasphemy. Your hands are stained with innocent blood. Your life is full of destruction and misery, both to yourself and those around you. You have broken the hearts of your dear parents and brought their gray hairs in sorrow to the grave. You have disgraced yourself and family, by your sensual debauchery. Poor helpless and innocent ones have had to suffer untold agonies because of your sins. You cannot, you dare not deny these facts. They stare you in the face, and will meet you at the judgment, unless you have this dark record cancelled here and now. You say you are not guilty of all these sins. No matter; if none of these things mentioned apply to your case you are guilty of the blood of Jesus, and you are condemned be fore God so long as you are disobedient and do not repent. You can never stand justified before God and rebel against his holy will. “To him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” Your whole moral being is described in the language of Is. 1:6. From the sole of the foot, even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds and bruises and putrifying sores. Spiritual death is stamped upon every feature of your being, and the only chance for your life, is to turn and forsake your way. O sinner, escape for your life! The enemy of your soul has ruined you for time and eternity. Unless you hearken to the offers of mercy, the only possible remedy for you, you are doomed to everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. No matter how good you think you are, and although you may measure much higher in the moral scale than your dissipated neighbor, except you repent you shall likewise perish. You may even be a loud professor of religion, and be considered in society an exemplary character; you may pay large sums of money for the support of the gospel and all benevolent purposes, and yet you may be a wretched sinner. If you do not love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and your neighbor as yourself (Luke 10:25-28), you have no promise of life, anywhere in God’s word, and except you repent you shall likewise perish. You are on the same road with the vilest sinner on earth, and except you repent you shall likewise perish. I you want life, you must forsake your way, no matter how pleasant it may seem to you. God knows just what is for your good. He knows that your sinful pleasures are dragging you down to hell. He appeals to your will. You may choose life, or you may remain in death. Your eternal destiny depends upon your choice. If you repent, and turn from your evil way, and take God’s way, you will have life. God cannot save you and be true to the plan of salvation except you repent. You must submit to his law and repent. This will bring you into the position where you can accept his offer of mercy. All of your sinful plans and thoughts must be entirely abandoned. You must make an unconditional surrender to God. You know you are guilty and God knows it. You must take the guilty sinner’s place, and be willing to have your sins exposed, as God sees proper. You cannot dictate to him, but must submit without reserve to his plan. God knows just what you need; you do not. You know you need something, but are not in a condition to tell what it is. God tells you what it is. Repent! Your soul is sick, and cannot be healed only by the divine Physician. He prescribes the remedy, and if you want life you must be willing to take his way. It seems like an awful dose to your sinful heart, but there is no alternative. If you want life you must take it in God’s way, and take it

NOW

While he may be found; while he is near. You have no promise for to-morrow. God says, “To-day, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your heart.” “Behold now is the accepted time, behold now is the day of salvation.” O dear sinner, repent; your loving Savior commands you to do so. He has done all that can be done to save you. You must obey him. Your case is urgent. You are upon the verge of hell. Repent and live! You cannot escape if you neglect this great salvation. Every minute brings you nearer to your doom. You do not know which will be your last. The next one may place you beyond mercy. Come dear soul, forsake your way and live.

FRUITS OF REPENTANCE.

God says, (Luke 3:8) “Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance.” Also, (Acts 26:20) “Repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.” These are

CONFESSION.

“He that covereth his sins shall not prosper, but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” Prov. 28:13. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 Jno. 1:9. This confession is not merely a mental acknowledgement that you are a sinner, but a deep heartfelt willingness to forsake your sins, and to have your whole sinful life exposed before God, and submit yourself completely to his mercy for the results. You will be willing to do anything he may direct, no matter how humiliating it may be to you. You will be willing, where you have personally wronged any one, to confess it to the injured party and ask forgiveness, no matter what the result of such a confession may be. God demands no impossibilities. He will open the way for you to do what he tells you. You will do it gladly. Your soul is at stake and you are willing to do anything to be saved.

RESTITUTION.

“If a soul sin and commit a trespass against the Lord, and lie unto his neighbor in that which was delivered him to keep, or in fellowship, or in a thing taken away by violence, or hath deceived his neighbor, or have found that which was lost, and lieth concerning it, and sweareth falsely; in any of all these that a man doeth, sinning therein: then it shall be, because he hath sinned and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took violently away, or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found, or all that about which he hath sworn falsely: he shall even restore it in the principal, and shall add the fifth part more thereto and give it unto him to whom it appertaineth, in the day of his trespass offering.” Lev. 6:2- 5. “Again, when I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die: if he turn from his sin and do that which is lawful and right; if the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.” Eze. 33:14, 15. The divine law of justice between man and man is unchangeable. A violation of this law produces a two-fold result. You are a transgressor against God and also against your fellow man. You must be willing to make restitution. If you have not the means wherewith to fully restore that which you have wronged, then you must do so to the extent of your ability, and thus do all that lies in your power to restore justice. In Luke 19:8 we have an example of true restitution. This man was willing to do anything to meet the demand of justice, and be right with God and man.

FORGIVENESS.

For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Every feeling of ill-will and enmity toward man, even those who may have been your bitterest enemies, must be abandoned. You must forgive them if you want God to forgive you. It is impossible for a truly penitent heart to hold a grudge against any person upon earth. All that you can possibly wish for your own good you will now wish for all men. Your soul is longing for salvation and the only question that absorbs your mind is, What must I do to be saved? And learning these conditions you gladly meet them in order to secure your eternal interests.

BELIEVE THE GOSPEL.

In the creation, man was endowed with the divine nature, and a perfect communion with God. This was the greatest blessing that could possibly have been bestowed by our Creator. This was the normal state of man. In this state God gave man a law. Obedience to this law meant perpetual life and bliss. Disobedience meant death and misery. God gave man the power to choose what he would. Disobedience was the fatal step. Man doubtless would not have taken this step, but for the subtlety of the enemy. God had plainly told what the consequences of disobedience would be. In order to disobey, man first disbelieved. Thus we see that unbelief and disobedience severed the holy relationship between man and his Creator. This left him “dead in trespasses and sin.” He stood guilty before God. Every sinner has taken the same fatal steps, unbelief and disobedience, and consequently stands guilty before God, not for what Adam did, but for what every individual himself has done. This is the great barrier between man and God. Sinner, you have the power to remove the barrier. Repent and believe the gospel. OBEY and BELIEVE. Unbelief and disobedience severed man from God. Yes, dear sinner, this is just what has separated you from God. Now he offers you life and pardon through Jesus Christ. OBEY and BELIEVE. You are living in disobedience; this is why you are on the wrong way. You must forsake your way and turn back to God; then you can believe. Some sinners say they cannot believe the gospel. This is true. The reason is plain. They will not repent. All who repent have no trouble in believing the gospel. God does not say, Believe the gospel and repent; but he does say, Repent and believe the gospel. No man can believe unto salvation without true repentance. You may have a head belief, but God says, “With the heart man believeth unto righteousness.” Without heart repentance no one can believe unto righteousness. Take the first step, repent, then it will be very easy to take the second, believe. True repentance brings you back to God, where you are now prepared to believe the gospel. You ask, What is the gospel? It means the good news. You will find it in substance in John 3:16. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.” There are many other such glorious promises to you. If you believe in Jesus Christ, you shall be saved. He paid the penalty for you and now God says that Jesus is your substitute. God has accepted Jesus’ sacrifice for you, and now you may go free. If you would not repent, you could not claim this glorious salvation through Jesus, but when fully repented, you can accept the free gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. God offers to cancel the debt of your transgressions, through Jesus. By faith you accept his offer of mercy. Thank God for the gospel, which is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth!

GOD’S MERCY IN THIS COMMAND.

No greater blessing could be bestowed upon this ruined world than the command through Jesus Christ to REPENT. All were under sin, and through this command God offers mercy unto all. It must be obeyed by those who will receive mercy. Sin, misery, degradation, and death are everywhere extant. How merciful in our God to demand us to forsake such a life which is so ruinous,even in this world, to soul and body! It is truly a divine law of justice. Physically, socially, morally and spiritually, it is the grandest law of the universe. The apostle says (1 Tim. 4:8), “Godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.” In Prov. 14:34, we find, “Righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”

Sinner, your obligations toward your God, yourself, and all those around you, teach you that you must forsake your life of sin. You cannot properly fill any position in life while you are a sinner. You are a sad failure everywhere, and cannot possibly fill the object of your creation. Your influence is dragging untold numbers of your fellow men down to destruction. You are not only responsible for yourself, but God only knows how many others you will have to answer for, when you stand before the judgement. This is awful, yet true. Oh think of it! You are leading precious souls to hell. How awful will be your condemnation! Oh repent, and turn to God, so that your influence will lead souls to him! You will be so much happier if you take God’s way. You find no true pleasure in sin. It is all disappointment in this life, and oh, what will it be in eternity? Obey God and be happy. If you repent you will find that you just begin to live and enjoy life. It is to your highest interest to live for God. Oh sinner, hear the words of Jesus, REPENT AND BELIEVE THE GOSPEL!

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony for first time. May the good Lord bless and keep you. About sixteen months ago I was saved in this evening light. My boy which had the fever and ague three years and three months was healed by prayer and the anointing with oil. “The prayer of faith shall save the sick and the Lord shall raise him up.” — James 5:15. Pray for me and husband that we may be kept saved.

Dear Trumpet Readers: May God bless and keep every one of you. My heart is just filled to overflowing with love for all the true children of God. I have finished reading the Trumpet, and it does my soul good to hear from my brothers and sisters everywhere. Oh praise the Lord for the knowledge that we are saved to the uttermost! Hallelujah to Jesus! I can testify that I am saved, and sanctified by a second definite work of grace, and I do feel I can never do enough for my Lord. Praise his dear name for freedom and complete victory over Satan and all his works! Oh how God does bless the true honest heart who simply clings to nothing, nothing save Jesus Christ and his righteousness! It is sweet to realize that we have found a Savior who is willing and able to take care of this mortal body as well as the immortal. I know that my Redeemer lives and loves me with the same sweet love that he manifested while he was here upon this earth to all who came believing. Praise his dear name! I have tested his promises and found them true. I used to think I did not have the time every day to read the Bible as much as I really wanted to; it was because I could not understand it well enough to get interested in it. But oh how different now! The words stand out so plain and simple, so consoling, so many many sweet promises. Oh that all could learn to cast their cares upon Jesus, for he is so willing to bear them for us! I never tire of telling or writing to my friends about God’s wonderful love for his children. I do praise God that he saves our family and keeps us all upon the highway of holiness, and makes our little home one among the holiest upon his foot-stool. We desire the prayers of all God’s children.

Your sister, saved through the blood of Jesus,

Emma A. Meyers.

Bro L. W. Stewart, Hadley, Ind. writes that he has 160 acres of unimproved land in Clark Co., Kan. twelve miles from the county seat, which he wishes to sell, and give one third of the amount to the cause of Christ.

Another brother has just written us that the Lord has given him orders to sell his property and put the money to work for the Lord, and follow him.

O how many precious souls could be speedily rescued if all who receive such orders would only obey.

One brother wrote us a few days ago asking what a certain amount of money invested in the publishing work would do towards spreading the gospel in the different languages, and in rescuing souls. We know of no way that a person can glorrify God with their money more than by helping to spread the truth by way of good holy literature. Any amount whether small or great has its effect, and people who seemingly have no talent for working for souls, can become wonderful preachers by thus helping to push the work. One thousand dollars would place holy literature in over ten thousand families where full salvation is a stranger. Five thousand dollars would scatter tracts and papers broadcast over the land and send thousands of them to foreign countries, and would aid in sending it forth in different languages. We are now sending out from one to two thousand free tracts daily, besides the papers and books sent forth, but this seems but a small mite, when we look out over the Master’s vineyard and behold the great fields ripe unto harvest and but few laborers, while the earnest pleadings come from every direction, for help and spiritual food.

There are persons who have not their means at their command now, but desire that the same be used in the work of the Lord after their death. Such ones can bequeath their property to the gospel work in some way, and it will be preaching when they are dead and gone. Let the work of the Lord move on. and dear ones, make sure that the Lord when he comes does not find your share laid up in a napkin.

FROM TEE CHILDREN’S HOME.

_____

Grand Junction, Mich., Mar. 4, 1893.

To the Dear Saints, Greeting: God bless you all for his name’s sake. Amen. I am happy to report salvation in my soul through Jesus’ blood. Praise his dear name! I feel like saying to the dear saints who have been corresponding with us, that we have moved on the camp ground, and expect to make it our home when not engaged in the gospel work, in the field, and I expect to assist in building up the home for the children. I have been assisting in getting logs to the mill, and the lumber on the ground, and as soon as the snow goes off, we will be ready to commence building, the Lord willing. There are meetings on the ground every Sunday morning. Much good is being done in the name of Jesus. We expect by the help of the Lord, to have a heavenly home here on this camp ground. Any one led to assist in this glorious work, can glorify God in labor or means.

From your brother under the blood.

CORRECTION.

_____

Bro. J. B. Caldwell, writes us, with the understanding that the article on “Snaky Religion,” that appeared in the Trumpet recently, accused the followers of believing both in drinking deadly poison, and in taking up serpents as positive commands, and wishing us to make this correction. “They hold the latter as a positive command but not the former.” If any one so understood our article we are sorry for it, and gladly make the correction. But we assure all that it was not the intention of the article to so accuse them. We simply alluded to the matter of drinking deadly poison, because the Savior connects the two things together, and we therefore insist that the one is no more a positive command than the other. “These signs shall follow them that believe: in my name shall they cast out devils.” A conditional duty, namely, if you chance to have that gift, and meet with a proper subject to exercise it upon. “They shall speak with new tongues,” not all, but any who may have that gift. “They shall take up serpents.” These things are called “signs,” or miracles. Now it is no miracle to take up a rattle-snake, get bitten and die. Again, all the miracles that Christ and the apostles did were to meet some, need, or perform some deliverance from suffering or death. Not one sign is recorded in the New Testament, simply to show miracle power. There was some gracious end accomplished in all. Now the above language, by the tenor of the context, simply means, that if they should by accident pick up a serpent, they shall be able to cast it away or they shall drive away serpents without being harmed. That is clearly implied by what immediately follows and what preceeds. These injunctions are all conditional, and not one of them is positively enjoined upon every child of God. “They shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them.” The Lord supposed that by putting an “if” to one, we would know enough to understand it also applied to the other. Having said in the one case, “It shall not hurt them,” it would be understood the same in the other. And all are simply promises for our faith to rest upon and thus save our lives in case these things occur by accident.

Questions.

_____

1 What do you think of the Epworth League? — S. P. H.

Ans. Some time ago while preaching in the Spirit we were led to say, that “every thing is a humbug but Jesus.” That will be a standing answer for all such questions. That league is to Methodism about what the Jesuit league is to Romanism. It is simply an earthly association, in red-hot zeal for the propagation of an earth-born sect, caring little whether the means of success are righteous or unrighteous.

2. Certain brethren holding meeting in Ind. had a man come to the altar who failed to get saved. And it was found out he had two living women. Had married his hired girl anil left his first wife. Has children with both. What shall he do?

Ans. Unless there are very peculiar circumstances justifying his breach of marriage vows to his first and lawful wife, God will evidently demand of him to put away his second and unlawful wife, make provision for the maintenance of her children; go ask pardon for his infidelity to his one lawful wife, and assume the obligations of a husband and father to that abandoned family if the way is opened for him to do so,and if not, we do not see that God will hold him guiltless in living in adultery with his unlawfully married wife.

Carmi, Ill., Jan. 28. 1893.

Dear Brethren, please explain:

1st. Matthew 18:15-18.

2d. 3 John, verse 10.

3d. Again I see that you hold that the church of Christ is pure. If so. what is meant by Eph. 5:26, 27.

Yours respectfully,

J. D. Baugh.

Ans. to 1st. The case in Matt. 18:15-18 relates to a personal “trespass against thee;” which, in many cases is only known to you and the person who has done the wrong. Your duty is plain. Do not begin at once to publish it abroad. Nay, for Christ’s sake keep it sealed from the ears of the world. But go in love and admonish the brother of his unchristian act. If he repents, asks pardon, and offers to restore all harm, amen; forgive him, and no one need ever hear of it. Should he be impenitent, and persist in a wrong course, take a good brother or two with you and labor earnestly for his recovery. If this effort put forth in love fails, then inform the church of the brother’s course, either privately, as opportunity presents itself, or publicly, as the Lord may lead. And let all the household of faith pray for and labor with the fallen brother, and when it has become apparent that the person is confirmed in a wrong obstinate spirit. should he still profess to be a child of God, let the church do the final duty of disowning him before the congregation. Let him be what he has made himself, namely, a sinner outside the church. And so treat him. But white all give him to understand you do not own him as a Christian, let all, by every possible kindness, confirm your love for his soul. This is the only course that makes his future repentance hopeful. If you allow him to wear the cloak of profession, it will prop him up in his evil way. On the other hand, if you both ignore his profession and show an indifferent or unkind attitude toward him. it will harden and drive him off more and more from God.

But if you do your whole duty, following the directions of God’s word, and show the true spirit of a brother, and he is still bound down under the judgement of the word of God you have brought to bear against his sin, he is not only bound on earth but also in heaven. “Forever Gods word is settled in heaven,” and what it binds here it will bind there. He that is condemned by the word of God here, will be held under condemnation by the same word there.

Ans. to 2d. Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious word: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church. – 3 John 10.

In the proceeding verse, John the holy evangelist says. “I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loved to have the pre-eminence among them, received us not.” And in verse eleven, refering to the conduct of that selfish and bigoted spirit, he says,“Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good.” The whole picture is plain. Diotrephes was a man of an evil and selfish spirit, and as such was not in God’s church at all, “For if any man have not the Spirit of Christ he is none of his.” But because no minister or elder had used the authority given by the word to declare such outside the church of God, he was there pretending to be in the fold and actually lording it over them, and through his “evil” “love of pre-eminence,” had actually deprived certain brethren, who were really in the church, of their privileges in Christ Jesus. This evil and arbitrary work is much like the practice of sectarian lords in these last days. When men are destitute of the Spirit they fail to discern the true spiritual body of Christ, the church. Hence they conceive of it as an earthly association, and presume to exercise the prerogatives of God, and imagine they can put a person out of the church. But this is all of the devil, and John gave warning that when he came to the church at that place he would “remember his deeds.” his prating against even him with malicious words, etc. That is, he would rebuke the bigoted impostor.

3d. If the church is pure, what is meant by Eph. 5:20, 27?

Ans. Why beloved here are the very means of the church being pure. Jesus Christ gave himself for the church “that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.” This text clearly teaches, as indeed the whole New Testament does, that regeneration, which inducts into the church does not make us perfectly pure. The fallen nature remains to be cleansed out. But this cleansing is not to be deferred until we enter heaven. But Christ will present us to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such a thing. Sinners receive pardon; but the church receives perfect cleansing or entire sanctification. And this is our privilege and God’s order, as soon as we entered the church through the saving door Christ Jesus, then we are to “go on to perfection.” And by one offering he (Christ) hath perfected forever them that are sanctified, whereof the Holy Spirit is also

Page 3

a witness unto us. Heb. 6:1 and 10:14, 15, So the order of God is, the church should be pure and holy here in this life. That we might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. — Luke 1:74, 75. The very God of peace sanctifies us wholly, soul, body and spirit, and then preserves us in that condition. 1 Thess. 5:23, 24. Therefore we believe in a pure church because God requires it, and salvation produces it.

Ques. Explain Eccle. 7:15.

The new version renders: “There is a righteous man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his evil doing.”

Ans. The perishing spoken of simply has reference to the natural death of the body; for it is opposition to prolong life. It simply means that while righteousness tends to longevity, and the wicked shall not live out half his days, there are exceptions to the general rule.

2d. Eccl. 7:20.

The new version renders: “Surely there is not a righteous man on earth, that doeth good and sinneth not.”

Ans. That there were holy men in the olden time of the law dispensation the Bible clearly teaches. And that the New Testament leaves no cloak for sin, no possible excuse for sinning is still more evident. Therefore the above words, if true in any sense, that is, if uttered by divine inspiration before Solomon departed from God, must be understood as asserting the universal depravity of man in nature, and by practice, separate from the saving grace of God. It simply takes the picture of the race of man as he is without the salvation of God.

3d. Bro. J. F. Elifritz asks how it is that the three days and a half that the two witnesses lay dead in the streets of the great city, are made 3 1/2 centuries in the Bible Readings, page 69, and not interpreted a day for a year as in other places in the scriptures?

This has been thoroughly answered in the past, but perhaps before the brother began taking the Trumpet. A day is used in the Bible to represent any distinct period of time, whether marked by natural seasons, or by historic epochs. In Eze. 4:4-6 a day is used to denote a year. Peter says a thousand years are as one day with the Lord. The present dispensation is often called “the last day,” but more frequently “the last days.” In Eze. 34:12 the time of Protestantism, when God’s people were scattered into many sect folds, and when Roman darkness and reformation truth blended into a cloudy day, is called a day. Zech. 14:7. Protestantism is called “one day.” In Hosea 6:2 Romanism is one day, and Protestantism another day. Now we know that the three days and a half in Rev. 11 covers the time of Protestantism, because it immediately follows the 42 months or “one thousand two hundred and threescore days” of the first beast, Romanism. See Rev. 13:5; 11:2, 3. 7. As the second beast — Protestantism — arose after the 42 months — 1260 days — years, and the two witnesses were put to death after the same 42 months — 1260 years, the time they lay dead, 3 1/2 days, covers the same time of the second beast. But it is just 350 years from the time the first Protestant sect was organized to the time of the “third day,” the evening light period. So since Protestantism just covers 350 years, from its rise, until ignored by the evening light, it is true in fact that the three and a half days are three and a half centuries. The same has also been revealed to God’s children by the Holy Spirit.

To the Saints of God: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I praise God for freedom from all sin and all sect bands. I am fully saved, sanctified and kept. Our dear Father is wonderfully saving and sanctifying his dear children. We are holding meetings, every night. Bro’s Shaw and Elliott are here and doing good service for the dear Lord. Bro. Shaw expects to go back to Mexico, next week. Some precious souls are saved every week and we have baptized several in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

Dear Saints of God, Greeting: We came to this place about four weeks ago and began services in the name of Jesus at a school house three miles north of town. This is a new place, the evening light having never been preached here. From the first we had good congregations, good order and the best of attention. Sometimes the house was filled beyond its seating capacity, which has not been the case here in sect meetings where only a part of the gospel was taught. About half a dozen consecrated for sanctification and about the same number of others for justification. Most of them we believe received the desire of their hearts. May the Lord continue to sink them down till all sell out completely to the Lord. While some have opposed themselves and spoken against the truth, yet the way of full salvation has many friends here even among those who do not profess to be saved. Also some who have not openly declared themselves free from sectism, after listening to the word of God from first to last, still enjoy coming to the meetings of the saints and bid us God speed in the good work. We believe that several others will yet take a decided stand for Christ. May the dear Lord keep the little church which has been planted here and continue to settle them. We baptized four yesterday and at night followed Christ in washing the disciples’ feet and commemorating his death. From here we expect to go to Pittsburg, Kan. Those who wish to address us can direct there.

Yours in the love and fellowship of the gospel,

R. M. & Lizzie Haynes, & R. W. Swinburn.

Dear Saints of God: Grace, peace and mercy from God our Father be with you all. Amen. It fills my soul with good things to read the Trumpet and learn how God is leading the faithful few who are not afraid to forsake houses and lands to spread the glorious gospel of our Lord Jesus. I am determined by the grace of God to press onward and upward through all the storms of adversity that the world and the devil may put upon me. Bro. Elliott and I returned from Mexico, and have been here helping in the work since. The Lord blessed our efforts in Mexico and I expect, Lord willing, to return in a week or ten days to resume the work there, teaching and preaching. I have secured about twenty-five bibles (Spanish) and quite a lot of tracts. I want still more, and believe God will put on the hearts of some one to send them. I mean to teach them to read the Bible. The harvest truly is great and the laborers few. The church at San Diego is moving along steadily but sure. The saints are standing steadfast and walking in the light. Many precious souls have been brought from darkness into God’s everlasting light since you last heard from us. Some of the hardest cases you could look upon have been wonderfully saved through the blood of Jesus, and are walking upright in all the light they have. O glory to Godl It pays to surrender all to God and cut the shore line. Bro. Upton is still laboring here. God is wonderfully blessing his efforts. Bro. Chisholm and sister are with us every Lord’s day. Also Bro’s Misner and Cannon are faithful laborers among us. Our sisters never tire in doing all they can, and are at their post of duty. Sisters Merchant and Posey are faithful singers in the street work, which God through them and others so greatly blesses. Praise God for the faithful few who are not afraid to go anywhere for Jesus! The saints all send greeting, and may God’s richest blessings rest and abide with you all, is the earnest prayer of your humble servant,

Dear Saints: I have often felt when I would read the testimonies of others that I would love to write my own testimony to the goodness of God to me. God has been very merciful to me. I can truly say, Blessed be the name of the Lord! I do feel that the works of the Lord are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein. I am so glad that God in his great mercy has numbered me among his people and called me out of Babylon, to walk among the unpopular few who are his alone. I can truly say that I am saved and sanctified. I have consecrated my all to Jesus, and my only wish in this world is to do his blessed will. Pray for me that I may ever be firm. Dear Readers of the Trumpet: can truthfully say to day that I am saved from all sin, and that I am reigning just now in this present world, victorious over all the powers of darkness that infest this region. Praise the Lord! “This is the victory that overcometh the world even our faith.” And hath made us unto our God kings and priests; and we shall reign on the earth. — Rev. 5:10. Then we are crowned, else we are not kings. “And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them.” We cannot reign on the earth after the judgement, because the earth will be burned up. 2 Pet. 3:10. Much more they which receive abundance of grace, and of the gift of righteousness, shall reign in life by one Jesus Christ. Rom. 5:17. He that hath the Son hath life. 1 Jno. 5:12. Dear saints, if we are ever faithful we shall ever reign.

Dear Children of God: May our Father bless each one of you according to your present need. I love to think of my Father’s family increasing each day as precious souls are “born again” of “seed incorruptible” by the word of God, and my love embraces each spiritual babe. Then my heart is made sad as I think that some of my brothers and sisters are permitting the enemy of their souls to ensnare, deceive, and seduce them, thus transferring them from the heavenly family to the earthly, who mind earthly things. Oh how our hearts bleed to think that any who have once tasted of the love and goodness of God should permit anything to transfer them into the enemy’s ranks, fighting against God by living in disobedience! Oh how trifling are some of the causes of backsliding, — looking at our brother’s failings till they appear mountains, dissatisfaction with our surroundings, conforming to the world, pride of life, carelessness and worldliness, love of ease, and for the good will or love of friends. Oh so many little things entering in defile the temple of God. Now if each one could constantly realize the greatness of the kingdom of God, could comprehend continually the great reality of eternity as set before us by the word of God, we certainly would be more watchful and prayerful, and would more fully enter into the thought that the religion of Jesus Christ is the business of our lives. The formal spirit is very strong at the present time, and where God’s children are associated in family relations with formal professors, a double carefulness is necessary that they do not drift into the same condition, having zeal without the spirit of Christ.

Dear brothers and sisters, did you ever think how much of the present work in the gospel field is working over what once has been done? In nearly every report of meetings so many are ensnared by the enemy and must be so carefully labored with to help them return to God. Did you ever think low much faster the work of God would move forward were it not tor this backsliding? May all who read these lines renew their diligence that they may not hinder the work of God or hinder other precious souls from having life eternal. How much depends on each one’s faithfulness we may not imagine. A great desire in my soul this year is that the work may run deeper in every soul who makes a consecration to God, that there may not be so many falling away from steadfastness in Christ. In my own experience I have much to praise God for in giving faithful teachers and workers to help deliver my soul from the snares of the enemy. While always having a desire to be right with God since my first consecration, the enemy has used so many cunning tricks that I have been deceived, thereby losing the grace of God out of my heart. But for the last year God has given wisdom to discern his wiles and ways, and victory is the chorus in my soul. Whenever my soul receives a benefit from my experience my love for the saints of God prompts me to give it to them that some may share in it.

When I was first sanctified it pleased God to bestow upon me the gift of faith, but while getting clear of Babylon teaching I fell from God. In returning to him all the confusion of mind was not cleared up and I did not discern the lack of this gift in my experience, although I realized, my feelings were not the same; I was afraid to look to them, and thus often was in trouble. My great lack seemed to be in humility and gratitude to God. I could not feel their depths as I once had and I could not comprehend it, as I knew my consecration was as full as I knew how to make it. A few weeks ago a dear sister in writing reproved me for want of trust, and asked me to see if God did not want to give me the gift of faith. I was sorely tried over it, the enemy accusing me of being a spiritual babe after so many years of Christian experience. But looking to God I concluded my teachers knew better than I did what was lacking, so I asked the Lord for the gift of faith if it would glorify him. The promise was given, “No good thing will he withhold from those who walk uprightly.” Faith grasped it and held it fast, and oh the wondrous blessedness of a clear steady look of faith! Tongue cannot express the joy of my soul in realizing the greatness of the kingdom of God, and my soul seems breaking in real gratitude to God for permitting me to have a part in the great inheritance. I am so glad to be nothing, that Christ may be all in all.

Oh dear brothers and sisters, is there any lack in your experience? Pass it not, by carelessly, but make it the object of life to glorify God in a clear experience, by having all God designs each to have. Should these lines induce any precious soul to seek more earnestly for the gifts of the Spirit, they shall accomplish the purpose for which they are written. Dear weak ones, be strong in God; “Ask that ye may receive.” Ask in faith, nothing wavering. Oh how my soul doth rejoice in God! How wondrously good is our Father! How greatly to be praised! Ever remember me at the throne of grace as your sister.

Jennie C. Rutty.

CLOTHING, continued.

_____

Having been a physician as a servant of Jesus Christ, I now come to one of the worst practices ever followed by the female part of God’s creation, and has done more to degenerate and blast proper development and happiness of our race than has been imagined by the masses of the people. It has been spoken of before, but it seems to me it has not been shown in its hideousness. That is lacing. Lacing has caused very much suffering just to look nice, when it was no possible benefit whatever. We have seen women professing to be children of God, laced until their diameter of the waist was reduced at least one-third.

Any one with medium sense ought to know it is a great injury; because about the region of the waist band, or near, lie some of the most important vital organs of life, health, etc. The stomach lies immediately in that region on which depends the reception and preparation of the food eaten to build up the body. But when so compressed by lacing it prevents the peristaltic action of the stomach, which commingles the food and gastric juice and also assists in the digestion of the food. Consequently, its tendency to indigestion and dyspepsia, because the food cannot digest. Hence, sour stomach, called waterbrash, and heartburn, smothering, fainting, sick headache, etc.

Just to the right of the stomach and lapping over it is the liver, one of the most useful organs of the animal economy, and it extends to near the medium line of the body over the stomach. The office of the liver is to screen the bile out of the blood as it passes through the liver and hold it secreted till needed in digestion. The natural shape of the liver is quadrilateral, from right to left over the stomach, but when thus compressed by lacing it is changed in form from its quadrilateral shape, from right to left, to more of an elongated roll extending more downward into the lower abdomen, pressing very closely, of course, upon the stomach and other vicera, producing an inactive, sluggish condition; also the internal, the intestines and female organs are crowded downward into the lower regions of the cavity of the abdomen, producing female troubles horrible almost beyond description, as in some cases we have been called to witness.

Also hemorrhoids of the bowels, prolapsus that is so common among the human family in this age of the world. This part of the apparel also in lacing of course is not only detrimental to the lower organs, but we find also that great injury is done to the organs of the chest. The pressure of lacing prevents the free use of the muscles of the chest in breathing. When lacing is begun young in years by girls, the effect is much worse, for the muscles are not permitted to perform their proper function and the lungs are not allowed to expand freely and in many cases the air seldom gets into the lower third of the lungs and this region is undeveloped, inactive, and disease ensues early in life, tuberculoses follows and consumption and death is the result. “The wages of sin is death.”

The effect of this habit also upon the heart is appalling, impeding the functions of the heart. The heart in its burdened condition, exerts its utmost effort to propel the blood through the compressed aorta and other arteries, exhausts itself, hypertrophy, rheumatism, neuralgia, suffocation, smothering and fainting away.

Another serious effect is the pressure upon the lactic glands, or the breasts, that the divine Creator has prepared for the support of and rearing of the young. This they do not properly develop to secrete the food for the young, consequently the little one born into the world has to nurse the bottle or be fed with a spoon and suffer the horrible tortures of the unhealthy, irritating effects of the unnatural food and many are brought to an immature end or suffer untold horrors of disease from its effect. In the summary you can see the female is incapacitated to bear young and raise them, for they are not In a condition to produce healthy offspring, but bring them into the world with suffering, wretched and a blasted existence, unless God in his goodness sees fit to take them out of this world to where there is no sickness, sorrow or death. Many a time have I, when attending the much afflicted infant, thought what a mercy when God in his divine, infinite wisdom saw fit to take the little doomed sufferer to himself, not that it was foreordained of God to suffer only, but by the disobedience of its lawless ancestors.

Oh the horrors of lacing! How can any intelligent man or woman deny these facts in the light of plain, scientific truths, which can be established by many honest observing physicians. Do not say now, “It does not make any difference what he says, I will lace if I want to,” for as we showed in the beginning the holy law of God (physical) cannot be violated without suffering the penalty. As he says, “I will visit the iniquities of the fathers upon the children for three and four generations.” How can any woman then lace to the glory of God? “Do all you do to the glory of God.” Dear sisters, mothers, can you glorify God in thus deforming your body, your offspring, so that you cannot perform the office God designed you should in the stage of this world’s existence? This is one of the intemperate unnecessaries. For Jesus’ sake and your soul, body and offspring ABSTAIN. People spend God’s money for those things which are destroying their being, sapping their vitals of their energy and life, dishonoring God, their great Creator that formed this wonderfully constructed, symmetrical, intelligent being to glorify him. It seems that man made a little lower than the angels and crowned with glory and honor, comes the farthest from accomplishing the purpose of his creation of all that God had made. Dearly beloved of the Lord, let us endeavor, with an eye single to the glory of God, to follow his example, his teaching and his holy life; by retaining our physical purity in every respect, as well as our moral purity. God has given us an inviolable law to govern our physical being that stands as immutable as the law that governs our spiritual being. Some do not seem to be conscious of this, yet it is as indispensably fixed as the word of God and will not pass away, nor be annulled, and cannot be ameliorated by the Lord God with all the council of angels, redeemed saints now in glory, for it is a perfect law and governs perfectly all who obey it. “Against such there is no law.” Gal. 5. But, ah! what a law against those who transgress this holy law! Can we use the temples of God in such a manner and be justified? Nay, verily. If any man defile the temple of God, him shall. God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. 1 Cor. 3:17.

Another thing regarding this is, if we willingly disregard this law of God and continue to violate it, we cannot expect that God will answer our prayers and heal us when we come to him in our afflictions, but, “If ye abide in me and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will and it shall be done.” Jno. 15:7. Another thing relative to clothing. We see people often, after being in a warm room all day, they will change heavy warm clothing for much lighter, and heavy shoes for much thinner and go out to gatherings at night, through the cold storm and perhaps extremely cold weather, regardless of any law; as if they lived independent of God, his laws, of anybody else. Speak to them about it and they will answer abruptly and haughtily. Or being at work in a warm room at some warm work as washing, and then want to go out of doors for something, and they fling the door open and rush out and perhaps be out in the cold wintry air for some time without anything on the head, or additional coat on the back or shoulders to protect from the cold. In a few days they begin to complain of a headache, a cough, a hoarseness, a pain under the shoulder-blade, chilliness and fever, with a great doctor bill to pay, besides some weeks’ extreme suffering all for a little carelessness to throw something over the head and shoulders, taking weeks of hard earnings to pay for what might have been avoided by a very little precaution, besides a severe catarrh to accompany and harass you for life, With weak lungs, and you are an invalid for life. I once knew a case of a woman, young, hale and stout, when she was married took a long sleigh ride on an extreme winter day, and to look neat and neater than she possibly might, arrayed herself with scarcely anything but corset and dress, because she was going among the husband’s relatives. The result was, when they returned home the next day, she was prostrated with a long lingering disease and has not seen a well day since to my knowledge. I saw her a short time before I left America and her complaint was, I am not feeling well. It has been about twenty-five years and she still is a sufferer. Those acts are undoubtedly suicidal in a slow process. As to our dress, we should dress neat, clean, convenient and plain. Our clothing does not necessarily have to be of the cheap articles or quality of goods, for sometimes it is far better and cheaper to pay 50cts per yard for goods to make our clothing than to pay 5 or 10cts per yard, because it wears longer than the same amount of the 5ct goods; that is, $4.00 worth of the 50ct goods will wear longer with continuous service than $4.00 worth of the 5ct goods. The costliness of apparel is adding unnecessaries to our clothing which makes it unnecessarily costly.

HOW SHALL YOU ESCAPE?

_____

How shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation? Salvation is found or obtained through Jesus. For God hath not appointed us to wrath but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ. — 1 Thess. 5:9. The persecution received by saved people is an evident token of their salvation, and that salvation of God. — Phil. 1:28. Men and women are testifying to salvation and living a life of worldliness, free from persecution. But the salvation obtained by Jesus, rouses the enemy who endeavors to discourage the saved soul by trials and persecutions. The devil knows the salvation of Jesus and that only deprives him of a subject. How shall you escape if you neglect it? God at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets. Heb. 1:1. God spake to the people through Noah that they should not escape the destruction of a flood if they did not cease from their wickedness. They did not cease and accept deliverance in the ark of God. The door was closed and God, true to his word, destroyed all who neglected, or refused the means of deliverance. God spoke through Lot to the wicked people of Sodom but they heeded not and escaped not the destruction God had pronounced. God spoke through Jonah to Nineveh. Nineveh repented before God and was spared. God in these last days has spoken unto us by his Son. Heb. 1:2. It will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah than for you if you do not escape through Jesus. God has sent a Savior, a great one to deliver. How shall you escape if you neglect? Now sinner reader, trifle not with thy soul and eternity, but accept the means of deliverance God has given and escape his awful wrath.

Now you who are enjoying this salvation, see to it, beloved, that you neglect it not, else your salvation be choked out and instead of escaping you have become entangled and destitute of God’s saving grace. “I went by the field of the slothful and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding, and lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down: Then I saw and considered it well; I looked upon it and received instruction.” — Prov. 24:30-32. A man may have a well improved farm but let him neglect it and it would soon become a waste place. He would not have to scatter the seed of thorns and thistles, only neglect it. You who are standing, take heed lest ye fall. Perhaps you have seen souls all ablaze with the fire of God, and perhaps through neglect you have seen the fire die out of those same souls, and heard them testify of their fallen condition which created a shout in the pit. Consider it well and for your souls’ sake receive instruction. If a man neglect his body, allowing it to become unclean, if he is neglectful and careless of his diet, he will deteriorate sometimes even to a beastial savage. If he neglect his mind it will weaken; so, if he neglect his soul, how shall it escape the inevitable relapse into barrenness and death? Now God has spoken to us in these last days by his Son, and this Son says, Watch and pray. If you are not watchful; if you neglect prayer, the result is a degeneration of spiritual life. The word of God says again, “Forsake not the assembling of yourselves together.” If you neglect going to meeting when you could go, it is to neglect salvation, and you need not be long in wondering what is the matter with you, if you do not feel free in your soul. Again the word says to “fast and pray.” If you are not satisfied with your spiritual advancement, give heed to this admonition and grow in grace. Paul says to “be not conformed to this world.” If you become neglectful on this line and begin to find pleasure in worldly dress and pleasure, how shall you escape? Again we read that we are to have a holy, pure conversation. And again, “Whether we eat or drink or whatsoever we do, do all to the glory of God.” So to become negligent on any part of God’s word is to neglect your salvation, and if you neglect your salvation, how shall you escape? Be. zealous, be prayerful, be watchful, be a Christian. Do not put off doing what God has given you to understand is his will. Be not slothful, be awake for J Jesus and push the battle through the gates. God help all to realize the worth of souls and to feel a responsibility resting upon each as the children of God. Wherefore, the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure, for if ye do these things ye shall never fall. — 2 Pet. 1:10. If you give diligence, adding daily to your Christian grace, you have the promise that you shall never fall, but if you become neglectful how shall you escape? Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth. 2 Pet. 1:12.

Dear Saints: I feel that it would be to the glory of God to testify to his wondrous love to me. He called me out of the Baptist sect, forgave my sins, and then sanctified me wholly by the precious blood of Christ. He keeps me by his power, and gives me complete victory over all the powers of the enemy through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. I can say with David, Bless the Lord O my soul, and all that is within me bless his holy name! I have a salvation that saves to the uttermost, and gives me peace and happiness all the time. We have blessed meetings here, and precious souls are being saved. Glory to God!

Dear Saints of God: I feel led of God to write my testimony in the Trumpet for the first time. I was saved a year ago last Dec., receiving a clear experience of justification, after being a member of the Baptist sect for about ten years. I saw clearly the sin and darkness of sectism and the teaching in the word concerning freedom from all sin. After receiving the work first of grace, though being warned of delusion, Satan made things look so plausible that I went after the tradition of men, accepted false doctrine and lost my experience. I did not know of course that I had fallen until some time after when God brought the fact clearly before me. I soon after made another consecration but did not get the real desire of my soul until a few months ago, I took the case before God again and received another clear witness of justification. I mean now by the help of God to press forward and attain to that deeper work of grace, entire sanctification. I find Christ an ever present help in time of trouble. I desire the prayers of all of God’s saints in my behalf that I may yet be of much use to the Lord.

Ethel Estabrook.
