Faith in Divine Goodness.

@

He sendeth sun, He sendeth shower,
Alike they’re needful to the flower,
And joys and tears alike are sent
To give the soul fit nourishment.
As comes to me or cloud or sun,
Father, Thy will, not mine, be done!

Can loving children e’er reprove
With murmurs whom they trust and love?
Creator, I would ever be
A trusting, loving child to Thee.
As comes to me or cloud or sun,
Father, Thy will, not mine, be done!

O, ne’er will I at life repine!
Enough that Thou hast made it mine.
When falls the shadow cold of death,
I yet will sing, with parting breath,
As comes to me or cloud or sun,
Father, Thy will, not mine, be done!

THE NEW TESTAMENT ON MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE.

—:o:—

We have received frequent requests set forth this matter in the light of Divine Truth, and feel that we should do so. We have been looking to God for light and wisdom, and hope we shall be able to draw the lines where the Word does.

First, we find that marriage is a Divine institution. Matt. 9:6. Mark. 10:9.

“Forbidding to marry” is a “doctrine of devils.” — 1 Tim. 4:1-3.

That the hand of God is even in the marriage of unsaved people is doubtless true to a great extent; hut more especially does He join His own children in this holy bond.

Let us now see who are Scripturally entitled to marry. — Read 2 Cor. 6:14, 1 Cor. 7:39. Here we see that the Word of God forbids holy people to many sinners. While the first of these scriptures prohibits yoking up with unbelievers in sect, or other organizations of men, it none the less forbids joining in marriage with unbelievers. We charge upon all children of God to observe these Scriptures. By presuming to set aside the counsel of God in this matter, many have lost their salvation, and pierced themselves with many sorrows. Let not the father of lies tell you that you can find a happy life outside the Word of God, especially when you know what the Word teaches.

The New Testament does not directly re-enact, the restrictive laws in Leviticus concerning the marriage of relatives. And yet it seems to be taken for granted that enlightened common sense, nature, and the Spirit of God forbids the union of near kin. Hence Paul denounces the man who had taken his father’s wife, as a fornicator of the worst kind.

The law, in matters of food, marriage, and other things that effect human health and happiness, is based on good natural principles. And though that, code is abolished, the principles remain unchanged. The Jew was forbiden the use of pork by a rigorous law. But Christians should, in general abstain from its use, on intelligent health principles. So also the marriage of kindred, then prohibited by the mosaic Jaw, is now forbidden by the civil law, and the knowledge of the fact that blood relatives are more apt to be of the same temperaments, and the marriages of such is often attended with sad results.

But we hasten on to the subject of divorce, separation, etc. Having twelve different translations before us, we shall quote from those when they seem to render clearer, than the common version. The first text is the following.

It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: but I say unto you, that, whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall mareth her that is divorced committeth adultery. — Matt. 5:31, 32.

“Maketh her an adulteress” — New version.

“causeth her to be made an adulteress.” — Rotherham.

It does not seem proper to say that a man, by putting his wife away, necessarily causeth her to commit lewdness. Hence we think the above translations more probably correct. “He maketh her an adulteress.” Namely, he makes her such in the eyes of the people. Since the New Testament makes that sin, the only just cause of divorce, by a man putting away his wife, even though she were innocent, he exposes her to the public name of an adulteress. Hence the enormous sin in the sight of God, of thus treating an innocent woman.

Now take your Testament and read Matt. 19:3-12.

Bills of divorce were Only allowed by Moses because of mens hard and depraved hearts. But this was subversive of God’s original plan. Christ, having now come to change mens hearts, no longer tolerates the putting away of husband or wife, save for the one cause

“And I say unto yon, whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, commiteth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.” Matt. 19: 9.

By these words, any man that will marry a second wife, the former not being dead, or guilty of fornication, is positively charged with the sin of living in adultery in the second marriage.

The question arises: If the woman is guilty, and is therefore put away, has her husband a right to many again! As far as we know, if such right does exist it is found in the above text alone. And we do not remember of a single instance where a principle, or rule is sustained by a single passage of Scripture. But it is a fact that the New Testament throughout declares a person an adulterer if he marry a second wife while the first lives.

For a woman that hath a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he liveth; hut if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband he dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she he married to another man.” — Romans, 7:2, 3.

This is the uniform voice of the Bible under the present dispensation. But let us look at matthew 19:9, again, “whosoever shall put away his wife, except it he for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery.” The question that arises here is this: Does the exception extend both to the putting away of the guilty woman, and the marrying of another? Or does it only include the first. Etymology, we think would allow either conclusion. The language positively asserts that if a man puts away his wife, and she innocent of that sin, and marries another he commits adultery. But whether, in case he puts away a guilty woman, he can law fully marry again, the Scriptures elsewhere must decide. For the clause, “except it be for fornication,” may only justify the putting away. And in the absence of a single other text that teaches a person can marry while a former companion lives, we think it a violation of proper rules of interpretation to take such license from this text. If the Divine author of the Bible intended that we should be free to marry again, when a wife is lawfully put away, would not the Scriptures have inserted the clause elsewhere? And would it not have made that one exception to the positive rule that man and wife are “bound by the law,” so long as both live.

That Christ did not intend to give license to a man, to put away his wife and marry again, may be clearly inferred by the effect his words produced on the minds of His disciples. Read Matt. 19:10-12. They were driven to the extreme conclusion that if there is no dissolution of the the marriage vows until death, “it is not good to marry.” They rashly concluded that if a man must abide for life by the choice he makes, the marriage institution was too sacred to enter. “But He said unto them, all men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.” By this, and the following verse we see, that the marriage law, under the New Testament is so high and sacred that the coarse, and licentious cannot receive it. Unlike the Mosaic toleration, it is hot accommodated to the “hardness of mens hearts,” and lusts of the flesh. The transforming, and spiritualizing power of Divine grace is abundantly able to place men where they can live happy and contented, without the blessing of a human companion, if that be their lot. Hence all divorcing, save for the one cause, and all marrying of a second living companion, are inconsistent with the New Testament, and derogatory to the grace of God.

That a person should net marry again even though a companion has been lawfully put away, may be inferred from the fact, that the sin of adultery is by no means unpardonable. And should a person guilty thereof repent, become saved, pure and virtuous, what is there to hinder a Christian husband forgiving and restoring such an one? Should not the duty of putting away an adulteress, terminate, when the putting away is substantially changed from that character, to one of virtue, chastity and piety. And if it be a Christian duty to receive hack a restored companion, should not that person remain single in order to be able to do so, should the one put away become worthy? We are aware of the fact that this is not the teaching of the law. But in many things he laws of the Kingdom of Heaven are in marked contrast with the precepts of the abolished code,as Christ shows in Matt, 5.

We drop this point by asking two questions. Where is there a word in the New Testament that would forbid the reception of a truly saved and reformed wife? Second, Where is there a principle in the love of God, and Spirit of Christ that would close a man’s heart and home against a companion, when returning humbly asking pardon, and already forgiven of God, and washed in the blood of Christ?

Next read Mark 10: 2-12. Here we have the came answer of Christ to the pharisees already examined in Matt. 19. But here it is recorded that the disciples asked Jesus again of the same matter to whom he thus replied.

And he saith unto them, Whomever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery. — Mark. 10:11, 12.

Here both the man and woman are placed on the same footing. If either one puls away his or her companion and marries another, the law of Jesus Christ holds that person an adulterer, or an adulteress. There is no exception here.

Next we call attention to Luke, 16:16, I8. The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. Whosoever putteth away his wife and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery. Here is the preaching of the kingdom of Heaven. It is in exact corroboration of the last. text. Both declare that “whosoever putteth away his wife. And marrieth another commiteth adultery” “whosoever” — that is a very comprehensive-word. It means any person, under any circumstances. Yea “whosoever putteth away his wife and marrieth another committeth adultery.” These Scriptures do not allow of a single exception. Hence they emphatically prove that the exception in Matt. 19:9, only applies to the putting away, and not to the ra marrying another. To say that the above text teaches one condition upon which a person may marry another and not commit adultery, were to set that text directly against Mark, Luke and Paul, who all declare that there is absolutely no exception. But “whosoever” does so is an adulterer. Christ would not say by Matt, there is one exception to the rule, and by Mark, Luke and Paul, declare there is no exception at all. The Word of the Lord does not conflict. We may also reasonably conclude that if there were one condition upon which a person could put away a wife and marry another without becoming an dulterer, the exception would have been mentioned in Rom. 7:2, 3, and 1 Cor. 7:39, in both of which it is declared that the marriage law binds as long as both live “So then if while her husband liveth. she be married to another man, she shall he call-an adulteress.” So many clear declarations all emphatically teaching the same thing, must surely mean what they say.

Thus far we have given more especial attention to the putting away and marrying another. Now let us see what the Word says about marrying a man or woman who has been put away. On this the voice of inspiration is very clear and uniform.

“And whosoever shall marry her that is divorced commiteth adultery.” — Matt, 5:32.

“And whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. — Matt, 19:9.

“Whosoever marrieth her that is put a- way from her husband committeth adultery. — Luke, 16:18.

There is no possible chance to bring in an exception here. These declarations stand out positive and unqualified. If a person were to attempt to carry the exception in Matt. 5:32, and 19:9, forward into the above clause in those verses, it would result in the following absurdity. Namely, “whosoever shall marry her that is divorced — except she he divorced for the cause of fornication — committeth adultery.” Any person can see that this were extremely ridiculous. It would give license to marry a woman that had been put away for lewdness, but prohibit the marriage of one put away innocently. It would also imply a privilege for the divorced adulteress to take another husband, but re. quire an innocently wronged woman to remain single. Such would be an abominable law. There is then no possible dodging the above declarations. Any man who knowing these Scriptures, will marry a divorced woman, while her former husband yet lives, is guilty of adultery; is a willful sinner, and can never be restored to God’s power without repenting and undoing the evil. Much more wicked and hateful in the sight of God is a man who will defame, and put away an innocent awful wife to commit whoredom with a woman that is some other man’s wife.

We now come to the Apostle Paul’s instruction on this subject 1 Cor. 7th Chap. dead the chapter through.

I say therefore to the unmarried and widows. It is good for them if they abide even as I. And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband: but if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife, — 1 Cor. 7:8-11.

Here are the positive commands of Christ. “Let not the wife depart from her husband.” “And lot not the husband put away his wife.” No difference what lust may clamor for; what earthly courts may grant, what human laws may provide, or the devil himself may suggest. Let not the wife leave her husband, nor a man put away his wife. And all of satan’s power nor man’s devices together cannot set aside the authority of the Lord Jesus.

“But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.

And the woman which hath a husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean: but now are they holy.

But if the unbelieving depart, let. him depart. A brother or sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace.

For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife. — 1 Cor. 7:12-16.

What do these words mean? “Not I, but the Lord” — ver 10, “Speak I, not the Lord” — ver, 12,

In the first instance he simply repeated what was given in previous commands of the Lord, as we have seen in Matt, Mark and Luke. In the second instance he gave command by the authority of the Spirit of God. Who was not only to bring to remembrance what Christ had commanded, but to “guide into all truth.” The latter were just as really the commands of God as the former. See 1 Cor. 14:37.

“A Bro. or sister is not under bondage in such eases.” Namely if their wife husband has departed from them. But are they in such cases at liberty to marry another? By no means. Such must remain unmarried, or be reconciled to the husband, or wife. 1 Cor. 7:11. To exclude all such loose ideas of the marriage bond, the Apostle says in the same chapter, verse 39. The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.

Only death can dissolve the marriage covenant, and give liberty to marry another. And while the New Testament recognizes, and counsels subjection to civil authorises, it does not give any earthly ring or court the power to set at naught its laws, and legalize marriages, where the Divine law forbids. Hence a man wilfully and unscripturally married, is an adulrerer in the sight of God, notwithstanding any legal sanction his money may have procured for him.

Here then we have laid down the plain law of Christ on this subject. Not our views, but just what the Word says.

1st A saint must not marry a sinner.

2nd Neither man nor woman shall put away their companion save for the cause of fornication.

3rd Whosoever shall put away his wife and marry another commiteth adultery.

4th “Whosoever shall marry her that is divorced commiteth adultery.”

5th “The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth.” And there is no partiality in this matter shown to the man.

So we, as Bible teachers must present the truth, and God will seal its authority.

But here is another important question to be settled. Must all persons who on becoming christians, or more ally enlightened, and finding, that they were unscripturally joined, now dissolve the marriage bond and separate? Me appeal to the Word for an answer.

We have seen that believers are forbid den to marry unbelievers. But if a man or woman gets salvation and having an unsaved companion must they separate? No But, “If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put hey away. And the woman which hath a husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him. — 1 Cor. 7:12, 13.

So there is a difference between going into unequal mating from a standpoint of Scriptural enlightenment, and being already in the same; having been joined when both were sinners, or the one professing was ignorant of the Scriptures, as has generally been the case in the foggy day of the past.

For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy. — 1 Cor. 7:11.

Here we see that God cares for children, and does not want to have them turned out and disgraced as illegitimates even though, through ignorance, there was an unscriptural union of parents. The union exists and they having children, it cannot be wholly undone. Hence God, in wisdom and mercy, forgives all errors and sins in the matter, and permits them to live together, yea forbids separation Here then is a principle laid down, in the Divine law, that where unscriptural unions now exist, that have been entered through ignorance, in some instances God forgives the defects, and instructs the parties to remain together, rather than expose their children to disgrace.

Now I his same principle will cover other forms of defective matrimony, just as well as that of being joined to an unbeliever. We may reasonably conclude that it will also apply to the case where men and women were married when reckless sinners, or in ignorance of the Word of God, and one or both have another living companion. Will not God forgive then sin and ignorance? No Bible reader doubts it. But what about their living together? That some who had better knowledge are required of God to separate is doubtless the case. But as the laws of the land legalizes such marriages, and the protestant pulpit has lifted the stand no higher, general ignorance has prevailed on this subject. Therefore many have

NEW CHURCH TRACT.

—:o:—

WE have just printed a new tract by D. S. Warner, of nearly 40 pages the size of the Sabbath tract. It is carefully written, and very forcibly shows, the Divine origin, foundation, head, door, membership, organization, holiness, and unity of the Church, and the basis of unity. It also distinguishes between the True Church, and all sects. Shows the evil of Schisms, and proves the perfection and practicability of the Church, as founded by Christ, and set forth in the New Testament, without any man-made machinery, creeds, systems and manipulations. It refutes the falsehood that we have to be a sect, and nails every thing down to the Word.

Would to God that we could send it free every where. But it costs paper, ink, mailing expense etc. But we put it down just as cheap as we can, to cover expenses, and what we may give to the poor who cannot pay.

For want of space, we were obliged to leave out the news from the field, which will appear in next issue.

Camp and Grove Meeting List.

—+o+—

BEAVER DAM, IND.

THIS meeting will be held the Lord willing, Aug. 1-8, ’89.

This beautiful camp is in the east edge of Fulton Co., Ind. Mentone on the Nickle Plate R. R., is the nearest station north. Akron on the Chicago and Atlantic is a few miles to the south. Rochester on the Lake Erie and Western R. R., is about 8 miles west. All coining to the former places, notify Bro. Geo. S. Bryant Akron, Ind. Those coming to Rochester, inform Bro’. David Leininger. Akron, Ind. State the time. The saints have a beautiful grove, good pavillion with comfortable seats. The person who is in fellowship with the God of the Bible, will find an extensive degree of heaven on this camp ground. We rejoice in the prospect of enjoying that glorious feast. A boarding tent will be on the ground, and all who are poor, and worthy, will be provided for freely. We hope to see a large assembly of the “holy people” met there, and showers of blessings come down on all our souls. Amen!

JERRY CITY, OHIO. CAMP-MEETING.

AT the close of the Beaver Dam meeting, the Lord wants one force, which will probably consist of Bro’s Palmer, Kilpatrick, and Speck, to go to Jerry City Wood Co., Ohio Camp-meeting, which will be Aug. 9-18, ’89. Address Bro. Wm. H. Miller, Jerry City, Ohio., who writes us the following: “To all the saints and all that can come to the Jerry City campmeeting, come in the name of Jesus, come to the feast; the table is spread and poor sinners must be saved. The camp-ground is two miles north-east of Jerry City on the farm of Wm. Carie. All that come by way of Toledo, will stop off at Trombly on the T. C. & S. R. R., let Wm. Miller, of Jerry City, know when you will be at the station. All that come on the Ohio Central R. R. come to Kremline. Those coming to this place, write to G. W. Cupp, Six Points O. Let all that have, and can get tents, bring them, so all can camp on the ground.”

RED LYON, PA. CAMP-MEETING,

WHICH will begin, the Lord willing, Aug. 20, and last nine days. Address Bro. Samuel Martz, Pittsville, Venango Co., Pa.

This camp is in a beautiful grove. There were but few tents on the ground last year, but I trust the dear saints have not forgotten their conviction over the matter last year, and their resolutions to move in camp next meeting. Brethren, let us stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance of this matter. Do not forget it this time. We hope to hear that the people will be furnished shelter on the ground, and that it will be what we have advertized — namely, a CAMP meeting. Persons coining by R. R., come to Rockland Station on the Allegheny Valley R. R. There will doubtless be rates secured this year again. Will Bro. Clayton please attend to the matter? Round trip for those who return, and one way for the ministers.

We are happy to learn that the saints are putting up additional buildings.

EAST PA. MEETINGS.

IT has finally been concluded to drop the Massachusetts grove meeting for this summer, with the hope the Lord will send some one to labor there this winter. This gives us space to make the East Pa. meetings come after the Red Lion, and Jerry City camp-meetings, and we know the Lord will send some German help. We will asc jertainust who, as soon as we can. The time now selected is as follows.

GROVE MEETING AT AUBURN Schuylkill Co. Pa. Aug. 30, to Sept 4.

GROVE MEETING

NEAR Dow, Schuylkill Co. Pa., beginning Sept. 6. 1889, and last until about the 11th. From a conversation with Bro. Palmer, we judge he will be at those meetings, unless specially hindered.

CAMP-MEETING IN CANADA.

FROM correspondence with brethren in Canada, and Bro’s. Clayton and Evans, we are about prepared to anounce a camp-meeting about two miles north of Welland, Ont., to begin about Aug. 30, 1889. To be held by the above brethren. We trust by next issue we will have full authority to make the announcement. We are confident this is of the Lord. Go ahead brethren in the name of the Lord. Amen!

GROVE MEETING AT ROANOKE.

THE time will be August 9-15. The brethren there have secured a beautiful grove close to the town, supplied with good water. Roanoke is in Huntington Co., Ind., and on the Toledo, Wabash, & Western R. R., not very far west of Ft. Wayne, Ind.

Address Bro. J. W. Zent, Roanoke Ind. The same force will next go on to Randolph Co.

September 4-11, ’89. This place is in Keokuk Co., and is located on the Central Iowa. Burlington & Western, and the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul R. R’s. I believe the brethren expect to have a tabernacle. We desire ministerial help from abroad very much. Who will come? Cannot Bro. Carey or Bro. Achor, or both meet with us there? All saints, and lovers of the truth are earnestly invited.

The proprietors have kindly given the use of their beautiful, little, natural grove or park, which is only five or ten minutes walk from the depot. We expect to get rates on all these roads for all desiring to come to the C.M.and will announce through the TRUMPET as soon as ascertained.

The few saints, and friends living near, expect to tent on the ground, and will try to provide for all brethren coming from a distance. The town has two good hotels whose charges are reasonable. We will have no stands or huxtering on the grounds, but all needed supplies can be purchased of merchants of the town. Bro. D. S. Warner and Co. expect to be with us. CAMP-MEETING AT ST. JAMES, MO.

COMMENCING Sept. 21, and continue as long as the Lord wills. The treatment the saints received on the camp several miles from that place two years ago, from a masked mob, has been overruled, to the glory of God, hence there is a great desire for our return. The people will give the Fairground free, which contains a very large seated pavillion, and other buildings convenient for the people to camp. We feel that the moving in the minds of the people there, is of the Lord, and we are led to go. We hope to meet a large concourse of saints at that place. The dear ones we met two years ago from Dent Co. and elsewhere, and others we have never seen in the flesh. Come every body who loves God and His truth, all who know God and all who desire to acquaint yourself with Him. O let this be a glorious feast of heavenly things! We believe it will be a glorious time. Special teaching needed in the camp two years ago, left but little time to bring out the deep things of prophecy and Revelation, which is our special calling to give the people. But with all our teaching and labors, complete salvation is the important object and chief battle cry. We expect the deliverance of a multitude of souls. We earnestly beseech as many as possible of the dear ministerial saints to come up to the help of the Lord in this glorious battle. We are told the pavilion will seat four or five thousand, and there is a great interest in the meeting there.

St. James is located on the Frisco, (St Paul & San Francisco) R. R., one hundred miles west of St. Louis. We hope reduced rates will be secured on that line. For any information desired address Bro. J. H. Morrison, St. James, Mo.

EXPLANATION.

 —@—

IE you examine last issue you will see that it was July 15, 1889, volume 11, number 9. But the head of this paper reads August 1, 1889. Volume 9, No. 15: instead of Volume 11, No. 10, as it would have been following the former order. This we wish to account for. There are 24 papers issued in one year. Number 9, as last paper stood, indicates that it is the ninth issue in this year. Each year makes a volume. Therefore Volume 11, indicated that the TRUMPET is in its eleventh year of publication. Now these figures were not strictly correct, so we revise it this issue. The facts are as follows: Jan. 1, 1878, a small paper was started at Wolcottville Ind., called the Herald of Gospel Freedom. That was 12 years ago the first of last Jan. In about two years it came into our hands. At the expiration of its third year we consolidated with a little paper in Indianapolis, Ind., called The Pilgrim; and the Lord gave us this name, THE GOSPEL TRUMPET, which was first issued Jan. 1st 1881. But instead of calling the first Trumpet Volume 1, No. 1, we called it Volume 4, No. 1, adding the three years of the Herald’s publication. This was suggested by G. Haines, our partner. But since that Herald was started back in the fogs of babylon, and died before it saw the evening light clearly, we have desired to drop off its three years and cast it back into the burning city where it belonged, and have our volume indicate the actual number of years that the TRUMP- has been sounding. For when a person gets clean out of babylon, that, should be the beginning of months and years to him.

The Herald started Jan. 1, 1878; by counting a volume for each year we would now be in the 12th year, or in 12th Volume. So at the end of this Volume, the two papers together would be 12 years old. But instead of being in Volume 12, we have been running in Volume 11, as last paper shows. This is accounted for by the fact that during the years of trial and tribulations, we pulled through by the help of the Lord. Time outran our old press nearly one year. That is neary two years of time ran round while we were fitting up the round of 24 issues, which is one year of papers. But that all would get their full number of Trumpets, we moved the number forward accordingly to the flight of months. Now as we have just opened a new subscription book, as we transfer the names from the old book into the new, we change the figures, so that each subscriber gets full credit, and also harmonizes with the figures of our revised head. Dropping three years, the Herald’s time, from Volume 12, the number of years since that paper started, or two years from the Trumpet Volumes, which had run behind one year, we now have Volome 9, instead of Volume 11, as it has been running. And changing from No. 9, the last issue, to No. 15, the present we make the number 24 fill up at the close of this year. Thus by a very careful rearrangements, we have the Volume indicate the real number of years that the TRUMPET has been sounding, and have its year or Volume begin and expire with the round of time, and also give all subscribers their full number of papers. Should however there be any mistakes result from the transfer of names, and change of figures, we will be thankful for any porson to tell us. We have taken great pains and care to have all straight, but it having been a very complicated and difficult task, it were a wonder if no mistake at all should result.

THE LORD IS MOVING.

—:o:—

BRO. Byrum and ourself have ventured to ask the Lord that we might be able to purchase the book and tract binder, as we go west in August; and praise the Lord, we have already received $150, just half of the price of the machine. This is surely encouraging to others who may have desired to invest, but were not sure the amount would be forth coming. Let all who wish to help set this excellent machine going for the Lord, and in the cause of truth, respond. Besides the shares we spoke of in last issue, we should extend the privilege to persons who may desire to donate any amount they may wish to give. The will of the Lord be done. Amen!

ON July 7, 1889, near Portland Jay Co. Ind., Sister Almira L. Fields, wife of W. B. Fields, exchanged her home on earth for a celestial home of eternal glory. She died of cancer, her age was 53 years 11mo. 3 days. Three years ago last May, she accepted the Gospel of full salvation to the joy and satisfaction of her soul; and since that time her highest aim has been to honor God by obedience to his will. Funeral services were held by H. C. Wickersham at Willow Chapel near Portland, Jay Co. Ind. A short time before she left, she said to her husband, “I have, ready for me a better home than this, and I am ready to go and possess it.” She seemed to be impressed that her near relatives and friends would not be present in her ast hours. She therefore requested her husband to write them short farewell addresses, which he did as you will find below. And when they were read to her she said that is good: — that suits me.

TO HER ELDER SON.

Dear George: — I hid you now farewell,
I’m going home with Christ to dwell,
Where I no more will suffer pain,
But endless youth I shall regain.

Dear son: — let not this world deceive
Thy soul. But on the Lord believe.
If in the way of sin you go,
No peace and comfort will you know.

My voice on earth you’ll hear no more,
O meet me on the happy shore
There we will sing to Jesus, praise,
For all His glorious works and ways.

TO HER YOUNGER SON.

Dear Franklin: — I must leave my child,
And gain a world that’s undefiled.
Ma has a better home than this,
A home of everlasting bliss.

You must be good so you can come,
And live with ma when life is done.
O should you live in sinful state,
You cannot pass the pearly gate.

Dear child I now bid you adieu,
O do a righteous life pursue.
That God may bless you with His love,
And let you dwell with ma above.

TO HER BROTHERS.

Dear brothers now I bid farewell,
Obey the Savior’s holy will.
Be ready when your’re called to die,
And meet me in the world on high.

O trust not in this world at all,
It will deceive, and cause your fall.
Trust God, and do His will and live,
For He a glorious life will live.

TO HER SISTER-IN-LAW.

And now before it is too late,
A little word to sister Kate,
Dear sister: I am going home,
And I shall look for you to come.

TO HER STEP CHILDREN.

Dear children I must leave you too,
Forgive where in I’ve not been true.
If you have said a word unkind,
T’is all forgiven out of mind.

O do forsake all evil ways,
And honor God with songs of praise.
And be prepared His face to see,
In peace in that sweet home with me.

TO THE SAINTS.

Dear saints: I bid you all farewell,
Jesus calls me with Him to dwell,
O praise His name! I’m ready now,
To leave my earthen house below.

This world has it’s charms for me,
At home in Heaven I soon shall be,
And with my Jesus ever reign,
Where I’ll be free from all this pain,

Ah! While my body wastes away,
My soul shall never see decay,
But I shall rest through wondrous grace.
And see my dear redeemer’s face.

My voice aud tongue begin to fail,
Dear friends for me do not bewail.
But do prepare in haste to come,
And see me in my happy home.

What shall separate us from the love of God! Shall cold-hearted professors, or scorning infidels! No. Or the fear of death! No. praise God for redeeming power. Praise Him for salvation from a sin. Praise Him for a home in eternal glory. Amen and amen.

Your sister Almira L Fields, waiting for the celestial train.

Written by her request, and approver by her.

DIED June 24th, ’89, aged 10 days Myrtie D. daughter of L. C. and Catharine Knowles.

God gave us a little blossom,
So tender, frail, and fair;
We guarded the little treasure,
With all our loving care.

The battle of life was too stormy
For the little one to meet.
And the pathway of life to thorny
For the tender little feet.

So our little darling left us,
And went back to the home
Where tears, sorrow nor parting,
Can never, never come.

O, we miss you little Myrtie,
Your place is vacant now;
But God knew best and took you,
And to His will we bow.

IN Grand Junction Mich., July 9, ’89, Clara Belle, child of Mr. and Mrs. E. Tuttle, was taken home to Jesus, aged 4 Mo. and 26 days. God bless, comfort, and save the bereaved parents. Text, of funeral services. “Is it well with the child? And she answered, it is well.” — 2 Kings, 4:26.

Dear Clara Belle,
Thou tiny bud
T’is well with thee,
At home with God.
An infant sweet,
Has left us lone,
A cherub bright
Shines at the throne.

O were the vail
Withdrawn that we
Our little Belle,
On high could see.
The beauty of
The robe she wears,
Would be enough
To dry our tears.

So while we miss
The darling ray.
That shone with us
So brief a day,
We bow to Him
Who gave the boon,
And took again,
Alas! so soon.

This earth is dark,
Our days are few,
We must embark
And follow too,
Across the tide,
That lies between,
Tins mortal stride,
And future scene.

While we yet have
A little space,
On earth to live,
O save by grace,
That we at last,
May come and dwell,
In endless rest.
With Clara Belle.

Dear Readers: — I am saved and walking in the faith rejoicing in the hope of eternal life, which my Savior purchased on Calvary for me. I find His ways are the ways of pleasantness, and all His paths are peace. Praise His name forever This true light was first preached here by Bro. Wilson, and thank God, I was honest enough to accept it. There are but a few here but God makes us strong in love one for another. I expect to live to please God, let come what will. I find Him a present help in time of need. I humbly beg the prayers of all God’s children that I may be steadfast unmovable ever abounding in the work of the Lord. Amen! From your sister in Christ.

Dear Brethren: — May God bless you in all your efforts to do His blessed will. We are a little bunch down here, but glory to God! He is ready at any time to give to His children whatsoever we ask in the name of our Master. Let us all be of that same mind which Christ Jesus had. Praise God for full and free salvation. We are standing fast in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free. God wrought us out with a mighty hand and redeemed us. Praise His name forever!

Your brother saved and sanctified through His precious blood.

Gresham, Neb,

Dear Saints: — I have been in the land of Canaan for about 14 years, and it has been the most wonderful part of my life. I have been taught more in that short time than I learned in the 9 years of wilderness life. How plain it is when we pass over into the rich country where we are happy all the time, filled with the power of God. I felt a lack in my soul when I heard Bro. Warner preach the Bible standard of purity, and God put the rod on me. We are having blessed meetings in Neb., and the Word is getting stronger and stronger. We have opened two new appointments, in the last two weeks, and the people receive the word gladly. Babylon is fallen and is becoming desolate in the West. There is much need of holy ministers in the West. We expect a glorious Camp-meeting this fall, and expect to see many souls saved.

From your Bro. saved to the uttermost.

To all the Loved Ones in Christ: — O how I would love to see dear Bro. Warner and Co., and greet all the loved ones. I have passed through great perils, but the dear Lord has kept me sweetly saved. My dear wife is now in Kalamazoo in the insane asylum. She has been there six months. My dear little Freddie and I are keeping house alone. I send him to school. He is twelve years old and is saved, praise the Lord. The trial of my faith works patience. The Lord has kept me through all these trials. Twelve years ago last Sept. God sanctified me, and I came out of babylon, and now I stand on the sea of glass praising God. I am dead to all the foolishness of this world; I will humble myself under the mighty hand of God. Glory be to Jesus! I am walking in the light and have fellowship with all the dear saints. O how I love to read the testimonies of the dear loved ones; it is a great comfort to me to read the Trumpet. I cannot get along without it. Little Freddy and I live here in this place as a light; we walk in the faith of the son of God. We have good neighbors, but they are unsaved. They were once justified, and would not go on unto perfection, so they fell. So I will say to all who oppose sanctification, be careful or you will fall, for it is a clean work. Hallelujah! To-day I belong to Jesus, soul, body and spirit, sanctified wholly and preserved until the coming of our Lord. Amen! Pray for us.

Your free Bro. in Christ.

Dear Brethren: — Grace and peace be multiplied unto you.

Praise is continually on my lips, and my soul is uplifted to God for leading me out of the wilderness into the promised land, where I can bask in the bright sunlight, of His love, and drink at the ever flowing well of salvation. For over twenty years I was wandering in the wilderness, groping my way in darkness, bound up in a sect- prison pen. But praise God! He sent Bro. Stanton here to proclaim liberty to the captives. He preached holiness and sanctification, and Christ as our present, saviour. And I gladly received Him. He anointed my eyes and I began to see as I never saw before. I could see myself as I was. I had been for over twenty years bound up in idolatry, worshiping the sect instead of God. I praise God that I am out into the clear light of God, and I am drinking of the pure river of the water of life, clear as crystal proceeding out of the throne of God and the Lamb. Praise God I have accepted Christ as my physician. I go to Him with my aches and pains and He wonderfully heals me.

When Christ sent out His Apostles, He said unto them: go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature. He also said: “these signs shall follow them that believe, in my name they shall cast out devils, they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.” And they went forth everywhere confirming the Word with signs and wonders. We heap old Church members saying the time for healing is passed, that it was only given, to the Apostles. Christ says these signs shall follow them that believe not only the apostle, but all that will believe unto this day. For Christ says: lo I am with you even unto the end of the world; and He says all these things shall ye do, for I go to my Father. It seems sometimes as if could see Christ, and hear Him pleading with the Father saying: “spare them a little longer, until the saints have digged around them and pruned them, “and if they bear fruit well; if not, cut them down. That awful day is coming for for them that have not on the wedding garments, when they will call for rocks and moutains to fall on them, to hide them from Christ, when He shall come in the clouds with all His holy angels, and declare time is no longer.

But how different will it be with those that are waiting and longing for His coming. Soon they shall be caught up to meet Him in the air, shouting glory! glory!! glory!!! and go shouting home. Praise God! I am out on the promise of God, under the blood. The promise is: that we shall eatof the tree of life, and drink at the ever flowing well of salvation. Praise Cod! There are few sanctified souls here, with Christ for their captain.

Dear Saints: — God has forgiven all of my sins, and cleansed my heart with the flood of Jesus. Praise God for His kindness to me. I cannot live without my loving Saviour. He is all and in all to me. He is my comfort by day and by night.

Dear ones, let ns walk in the light. He is the light, and whosoever walks in that light shall not stumble, but will live in this world without sin , even as He did. If we lake Him for our guide, we will bring forth good fruit, so that those around us can see we are His followers, and thereby win some to him. Your sister in Christ.

Dear Brethren: — I saw one of your tracts; “what church should I join, and like the way of representing the scriptures I am an evangelist, came out. from the salvation army. Could not endorse their doctrine, and could hot go in their work, because they swear their officers in, and I would not be sworn in. So I came out of her, and since have received light on the subject through some of the members of the Church of God at Meriden, and your tract, which was given me by the same. I have a band of Christian workers, and we are working in different places getting souls saved. Since God has given me the light, we must let our light shine. Send me some of your papers. Your Bro.

(Continued from 1st page.)

married a second companion without scruple. Many were unfortunately wedded the first time through youthful ignorance, or persuasion, and were soon abandoned. The law claimed to have dissolved the bond, and they have lived long and happily with a second, and brought up children. Will God now require them in every case to part, and bring disgrace upon their children? No. The principle already laid down leads us to the opposite conclusion. Treating on this very subject the Apostle says: “Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called. Art thou called being a servant? care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather. Art thou bound unto a wife? seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife.” — 1 Cor. 7:20, 21, 27. As you have been called into the Kingdom of Heaven, so you may continue. Of course this will not apply to such as have been wilfully living in adultery. Such will have to repent, and forsake their sin before they can get into the Kingdom. But such as come into the fold of Christ married in all good conscience, if God permits you to live together, “Seek not to be loosed.” God cares just as much for the children of such, as for those of the father who has an unbelieving wife. It is true that in all ordinary cases, transgression done in ignorance must be both repented of and abandoned when light is received. But here is a case where it is impossible to undo what has been done. Children have been born unto them as man and wife; and now their unscriptural steps must be forgiven, and they permitted to live together as man and wife, the rest of their life or their innocent children suffer the disgrace of being called bastards. Which reproach we have seen God’s Word would spare them. So we see that this is a step taken in the dark, that cannot really be retraced and in the light, without a greater difficulty, and a wrong inflicted upon innocent parties.

Besides this, who does not know that man and wife, by living together as such for years become affectionately blended in heart. And do we not know that God, who is more tender and fervent in love toward His children, than the mother can be toward her child, and Jesus, who is so touched by the feeling of our wounded hearts, do we not surely know that God would spare such grief. It does seem to ns in many cases God can, and it would be just and holy in doing so. But God forbid that any person should so construe these thoughts as to venture into such a snare knowingly. Neither would we, for a moment, encourage such to remain together, whom God convicts with the duty of separation. Let all who have gotten into this unfortunate entanglement, open your heart and conscience before God, His Word and Spirit ,and being wholly subject to the will of God, do that which would, to your best judgment, be most to the glory of God, and that which your conscience would most approve of in the day of judgment. Duty lays in one direction or the other. Therefore you must have the matter settled, and certainly know which is the will of the Lord in your own case; or if in doubt or uncertainty, you cannot be free in your soul, and keep victory and full salvation.

Let every earthly consideration be counted but dirt, rather than endanger your immortal soul.

It doubtless helps to settle this question to take into consideration the fact that there seems to have been men in the Apostolic Church who had more than one living wife.

“A Bishop must be blameless, the husband of one wife.” — 1 Tim. 3:2.

“If any be blameless, the husband of one wife.” — Titus 1:6.

Let the deacons be the husband of one wife.” — 1 Tim. 3:12.

Had the apostles required that, all men having two living women dissolve their second marriage, and ignore it, when ‘entering the Church, then there would have been no believers having more than one wife, and therefore there would have been no occasion for the Apostle to guard Timothy and Titus against the ordination of such, to the office of elder, or deacon. But since we have the above directions that persons having more than one wife should not be made officers, it is evident there were such in the Church. Though they were entitled to the fellowship of the Church through the mercy of God, the unfortunate fact of having more than one wife, which they could not now help, rendered it imprudent that they be advanced to such a responsible position. For notwithstanding, God had forgiven them all wrong in the matter, it was an embarassment that exposed them to human blame, and “a bishop must be blameless.”

Let us then be understood. We believe God can, and does forgive men and women all their sexual sins, and mis-steps, and in some cases at least, permits them to live with the wife; with whom they were called into the kingdom of grace, and take care of the children given them, even though he, or his wife may have been previously joined to another. And while such show forth the fruits of the spirit, they should not be harassed and grieved with “doubtful disputations.”

It has been taught by some that persons who are unfortunate in the matter of having a divorced wife, and are married to a second, that if they live with her, they should live in celibacy. But we find no such directions in the Word of God. To take upon you such a vow, is but to go into bondage under the elements of the law, It give! place to the devil, to tempt, harass, and buffet the soul. All saints of God are taught by the Word and Spirit of God, and enabled by Divine grace, to live temperate, pure, spiritual minded, and abstinent in all things, to the full extent that God is glorified. And thus should they all live. Yea, “this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remains that both they that have wives, be as though they had none; and they that weep, as though they wept not.” — 1 Cor. 7:29-31. How very forcibly those words come to us, upon whom the end of the world has come. But this holy life of self-denial should all be in the freedom of the Spirit and law of liberty in the soul, and not by binding yourselves under a slavish law which brings a snare, and usually works bondage and death. Flee from legality, and “live in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.” If you are conscious that God forgives all sins of the past, and does not require you to separate, then live in the bounds of the Word of God as man and wife, and permit no man nor the devil to accuse you, nor put an unscriptural yoke upon you. “Whom the Son maketh free, is free indeed.” “Only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh.” Amen!

But should a man or woman, through lust and treachery, leave a companion and children, after living together for years, and take another, justice and righteousness demand that he put away the late espoused, and return and render satisfaction to the wronged family.

And for a man or woman professing to be saved in the present light, to allow the devil to “transfer his or her love” from a lawful companion to another, is a sin and abomination in the sight of God, which no person can be guilty of without first having lost all the grace of God out of the heart, and becoming a reprobate. And such will have to put away the unlawful wife or husband, and make complete satisfaction to the wronged one before any saint of God can have confidence in them.

“For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications thefts, false witness; blasphemies: these are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.” — Matt. 15:19, 20.

“For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things comes from within, and defile the man.” — Mark 7:21-23.

“Now the works of the flesh are these, Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lacivousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” — Gal. 5:19-21.

And we are plainly told “that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” — ver. 21.

We should not allow the fact that our merciful High Priest can forgive them that are “ignorant and out of the way,” cause us to lower the standard of His Word one jot or tittle, nor in the least mitigate the guilt of the willful trasgressor.

On the other hand we should not stumble the souls of such as give evidence that God has forgiven their wrong steps in the kingdom of darkness, because His Word is inflexible toward them that know it. The Lord give us both wisdom and love, that we may properly balance the claims of justice to the law of the Lord, and pity to the souls of men. Amen!

And now with the performance of one more duty, we commend this sincere effort to the blessing of God.

When a soul who had been associated with us, fell into sin and “lusted after evil things a few years ago, and bounded from one extreme to another on the marriage subject, I allowed myself through much urging to contribute some and sign my name with him to an article, which, in some respects was not up to the Bible sanctity of the marriage covenant. And I here renounce whatever was too slack in that article, and ask all the saints to forgive our consent to the same. Amen!

A DAUGHTER OF THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS.

—:o:—

IN order to understand who are the harlot daughters spoken of in the scriptures it is necessary to know something about the Mother of harlots. We find there are two women spoken of in the Bible; the free-woman, and the bond-woman, which represent, the church. The first typifies the true Church, the bride of Christ. The second, the false-church; or lewd woman, the mother of Harlots.

After the Lord had established His glorious Church hero on earth; the devil found out that he nor his children could not join it because Christ is the door, and the entrance is holy, and none but the pure in heart can enter; so he devised a plan to enlarge his kingdom by establishing a church of his own, to deceive and ensnare multitudes of honest souls; taking them captive and placing them under the galling yoke of sectism; subject to the laws and governments of creeds of men; and this institution, or false church, is the mother of harlots, but satan tried to deceive the people, by calling it the true church of God.

In the 13th chapter of Rev. we read of a beast which rose up out of the sea. This represents a power — Papal Rome — rising up in the midst of the restless and unsettled state of affairs, combining the civil and church government: placing the pope as the head of the church and compelled the people to worship the beast, or suffer the most severe persecutions. During this period of time the Church was in a wilderness state; the saints were overcome by persecution; an awful vale of spiritual darkness covered the land. The apostate church seemed to have full sway.

This harlot woman spoken of in Rev. 17: is the apostate church, which consists of those who have entered into a covenant with God, and have broken their sacred vow, and are yoked up with unbelievers and evil doers, together with many honest souls who have been deceived and led astray, being ignorant of her devices. Others yielded because of the severe punishment and persecution.

The points upon which these reprobates agreed were, that the Pope at Rome, was the head of the church, and supreme ruler over all nations, and that the Roman ecclesiastical Hierarchy was the Church of God; and that it was the duty of all the civil governments to compel all the professing Christians to accept the Roman Catholic faith. Thus was formed the great city of mystic babylon. The pope in assuming his position as the head of the church took upon himself the many names of blasphemy; such as: “Infallibility;” “His holiness;” “King of kings;” “God on earth,” etc.

The pope wears in jeweled letters upon his miter, or pontifical crown, the following blasphemous title, which he applies to himself: — vicarius filii dei which translated from the latin means: “Vicegerent of the Son of God,” that is: setting himself up in the place of Christ, as the head of the church. Taking the letters out of this title which the Latins used as numerals, and giving them their numerical value, we have just 666, which is “the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred threescore and six. — Rev. 13:18.

Thus we have: —

V — 5
I — 1
C — 100
A — not used as a numeral.
R —   ”        ”       ”       “
I — 1
U — 5 — formerly used as V.

S — not used as a numeral.
F —   ”        ”       ”       ”
I — 1
L — 50
I — 1
I — 1
D — 500
E —   ”        ”       ”       “

_____

Total 666

Adding these together we have just 666. In estimating the numerical value of the above title, we have noticed that the letter U is used to represent 5 the same as the letter V. In looking up the former use of those two letters we find that formerly they were used indifferently, each having the same value, and were not changed, or used separately until the 16th ceutury.

By comparison of the Word, we find that Roman Catholicism comprises, or envelops this Apostate church, and is the Mother of harlots. The various religious order scontained in this sect form a babel confusion, yet they all seem to agree upon the point of allegiance to the pope as the supreme ruler, or head of the church, and it was filled with the abominations of the earth.

But now comes the question: Who are the harlot daughters of babylon? After this mother of harlots had had full sway and power over the religious world for a number of centuries, other branches began to spring from her, protesting against her and limiting her power to a great extent. We trace her lineage down through the generations of the protestant creeds. And the protestant denominations are only the offspring of the mother of harlots and help to form the great city of babylon.

God has uttered His judgment upon this great city and says, babylon shall sink to rise no more. He utterly rejects every sect denomination in existence, and there is not one of them that He recognizes as His Church; nor even branches of His Church, for His Church is called the “Church of the First Born.” Each member’s name is written in heaven.

Christ is the head of the Church; and in speaking to His followers, He said: ”I am the vine, ye are the branches.” So this clearly shows that no sect is a branch of Christ.

Yet, while God does not countenance these institutions of babylon, He has many children in them; honest souls who have been taken captive, and are starving for want of spiritual food; to such ones He has issued the positive call: “Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.” To refuse to obey this call, is as much as to say; that you are not one of God’s children. There is no sect in existence, that will dare to say before God, that they are the “Church of the First Born;” “a glorious Church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any such thing.” or that their members are all holy, and in a safe place where the enemy cannot touch them as long as they remain a member of their sect.

But in the true Church of God none but the pure in heart can enter, and the gate of hell shall not prevail against it. During the reign of Christ on earth, and for many years after, the Church which He established upon earth, was in a clear transparent state, and shone forth in all the splendor and brightness of the morning, until the dark vale of Roman Catholicism eneloped the people in the shades of spiritual darkness. The people were not permitted to read or understand the Bible, and as much as possible, were kept in ignorance of the teaching of the Word of God. But there came a time of reformation when the Bible was translated into different languages, and the people began to hear the Word preached; but ere long the protestant creeds, one after another, were formed, which were only the offspring of Roman Catholicism. This was the time spoken of by the prophet Zechariah: “And it shall come to pass in that day, that it shall not be clear nor dark: but it shall be one day which shall be known to the Lord, not day nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at the evening time it shall be light.” — Zech. 14:6, 7.

At the appearance of the evening light a great separation was made. The two witnesses which lay dead in the street were resurrected. The Word of God, by the Spirit of God, was a dead letter to those who claimed to be Christians, but now it begins to take effect. The apostate church filled with ungodly professors takes the downward road to hell; having a profession, but not a possession of salvation. While the true Church shines forth in all its purity, arrayed in the beauty of holiness. The precious and the vile are separated; the scattered condition of God’s Church is being brought to an end, and His people united into the one Church the body of Christ. The apostate church is composed of the many hundred religious denominations. Statistics show that the number exceeds one thousand. Some apply the number 666 as spoken of in Rev. 13:18. to mean the real number of blasphemous titles among the denominations. Let us see if it conflicts with the Word. While statistics show a larger number yet we find many of that number classed under the same name. For instance take the Methodist. There are branches called the Free Methodist; Protestant Methodist; Independent Methodist; M. E. etc. making quite a number of that branch of babylon, yet they all come under the blasphemous name of Methodist. And so it is with other denominations, many having a number of branches to come under the same title. Doubtless the number will reach, and not exceed six hundred and sixty six. These are names of blasphemy, because Christ is jealous over His bride — the Church — and is not pleased to have her called by any other name, than is given in the Word of God. Then, the only way that we can join His Church is to get salvation, and the moment we do that, we are then already in the Church without any ceremony or any thing of the kind. The only way to get in is through Christ, for He says: “I am the door.” And he that entereth not by the door, the same is a thief and a robber.

But, says one: what about those who lived a christian life, and belonged to a denomination at the time of death, were they lost? No. not if they were born of God, and lived up to all the light they had. Such ones are, saved to be sure, and yet God has many honest children among the sects, who have not received the light with an understanding heart, but His voice is heard now, saying: “Come out from among them and be ye separate: thus saith the Lord.”

There was a time when the sun had gone down over the prophets, and the day was dark unto them, that they could not divine. (Micah 4:6.) The ministers did not, and do not yet, in babylon, understand the deep things of God, and the revelation of prophecy. But now the evening light has come; the Word of God is preached in all its purity; holiness is preached up to a bible standard. God’s ministers are enabled to understand the Word of God, and see “eye to eye.”

In 1 Cor, 6:15, the Word of God commands us not to join ourselves to a harlot. Then let us be loyal to Him in all things.

“Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.” — Jno. 12:35.

SALVATION WORK

—:o:—

BELOVED Saints Greeting: — I have felt impressed for some time to write a few lines in regard to salvation work, this lack seems to exist everywhere. It is all well and good to praise the dear Lord for salvation and His keeping power, but we do not want to get our eyes off from those multitudes of perishing souls whom Jesus died for. Let him know that he that converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. The command is: “go and preach the Gospel to every creature.” And I feel that God requires me to do all that I possibly can in fulfilling that command; and I find it my chief delight in doing whatever He commands me.

I have now issued the 3rd No. of the Children’s paper, though under great difficulties. God has giveu me grace to go and work for money to publish the paper with. Bless the Lord! And if this be His will for all the future, I will say amen, every time. I can afford to be any thing or nothing for Jesus sake. God has given every one of His people a life-boat, and wants them to save all they can, so be at work; the harvest is great, and the night cometh when no man can work.

Dear Saints: — The grace of God is sufficient for all God’s little ones, and may they continually be filled with all the fullness of God, and continually stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made them free, and be not entangled with the yoke of bondage. There are a few here who are standing true to God, and walking in the light.

Pray for us that we may keep our eyes off of every thing but Jesus, and serve Him always, and let our light shine. Your Bro. saved and sanctified, and made white through the precious blood of Jesus.
