Saved in Jesus,

—:o:—

I am sweetly saved in Jesus,
Through His precious blood divine.
Walking in my Savior’s foot steps,
I’m the Lord’s and is mine.

I have given all for Jesus,
Died to sin and worldly pleasures,
But I’ve found a sweeter treasure,
Than all earthly pomp and dress.

Oh the joy of full salvation,
How it fills my heart with praise,
To the blessed name of Jesus
Who is with me all my days.

How sweet to know we are ready,
When Jesus comes to take us home,
Where we’ll shout His praise forever.
With the angels round the throne.

Robed in garments of salvation,
With Christ enthroned within,
Heaven is my blessed portion,
Since my soul’ is saved from sin.

WANDERING STARS.

—:o:—

WHEN the course of religion lay along the shadowy way of mingled darkness and light, the stumbling and falling of souls seldom placed them in the chains of eternal despair. But the evening light has come, the true and “everlasting Gospel” is being preached. The standard of holiness has been raised up to the Bible, and men have now become enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted of the good Word of God, and the powers of the world to come, from which, “If they fall away it is impossible to renew them again unto repentance, seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put Him to an open shame.” “But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.” — Heb. 6: 4-8.

“But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, self-willed, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities. Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord. But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption; and shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you. Having their eyes full of adultery, and that cannot, cease from sin; beguiling unstable, souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children; which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness: But was rebuked for his iniquity, the dumb ass speaking with man’s voice forbade the madness of the prophet. These arc wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest, to whom the mists of darkness are reserved forever. For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption; for of whom a man is over-come, of the same is he brought in bondage. For after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, the dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.” — 2 Pet. 2:10-22.

What a picture, and in the next chapter and third verse, we see these deceived and apostate “scoffers walking after their own lusts,” “shall come in the last days.”

“Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core. These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds: trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaking great swelling words, having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage.” — Jude, 11-12, 16.

Last night, we waked up, and in a few hours meditation brought these awful scriptures before our mind in greater force than ever before, and gave them a more present application. While the light of God was waning from the Gentile masses, the Spirit is about grieved out of the world, save in the Gentile remnant, and the Jews — by the awful corruption of the Christian religion in and through the apostate sects, those who have been advanced to the glorious summit of His holiness, if they fall away, and wilfully sin, and deliberately put Christ to an open shame, by the reproach they bring on His cause, they are lost to all time and eternity. “It is impossible to renew them unto repentance.” Of course satan will keep-them making a profession, for this is his age of deception. He will even have them go through with a form of consecration, fast, and afflict themselves, weep and mourn but with all this there is no repentance, no pangs of remorse for “the wounds inflicted on Christ, nor penitence for, or confession of lies and wrongs against the children of God. Those words were especially impressed on our minds as being now fulfilled. “Those are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest, to whom the mist of darkness is reserved forever.” Their damnation is sealed, they shall only wander in the mists of darkness here, and go to the pit of dark despair in the world to come. “Raging waves of, the sea foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.” — Ah! Alas! it is forever. Hope shall never dawn again in their soul. “Wandering stars ” How striking the figure. Stars are used to represent God’s ministers. And they that turn many to righteousness shall shine as the stars for ever and ever.” — Dan. 12:3. And because these fallen lights claim still to he ministers they are denominated stars, but they are wandering stars Having lost their estate, and plunged into sin, they are like stars than have dropped out of their place in the heavenly constellation, and are now driven irregularly about in the shades and mists of dark confusion. O how sad and pitiable the sight! to one person they claim to be sweetly saved, and to another they say, they are seeking restoration. And so their state varies through about every concievable condition from the depth of despair to some fancied third heaven experience, above every body else on earth. “Presumptuous are they, self-willed,” “foaming out” vile falsehoods against the saints of God, and then when the devil sees a chance to deceive some short-sighted disciple of Christ, he will play the meekness of an angel, and much willingness to consecrate; but they never heartily repent of their sins. Thus they but “sport with their own deceivings,” i. e., reduce the sacred things of consecration, etc. to a farce. Satan has them going through the mockeries of religion, as a mere sport for the demons of hell to laugh at, and yet keep them half imagining that they are getting back to God, and are soon to excell all others in holy attainments. Knowing that it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, he is willing they may flounder around the altar all their life time.

“Presumptuous.” O it is awful. Observe J. W. Wyrick of Kansas. He came to Iowa last summer, spoke well of us, called himself J. West. Told numerous lies, conflicting stories of the same thing to different persons. And when Bro. Lindley come there and exposed him, he denied before a congregation that he had changed his name. But when proved guilty, he confessed he had but did it for a purpose, and then began to scatter his lies in sheets. Ho came to Windsor Mo. stopped with the Cole family, said he had never seen any of us preachers east, nor sister Mary Cole, Said his name was John Wesley, and begged money. How mean and base. He had abused sister Mary as only a devil possessed man can, then came to her mother and begged money under an assumed name.

In Iowa a man who was sweetly saved some eight years ago, has a large and productive farm, had never missed crops to any extent since a young man when first settling there. Had about 40 acres of wheal which he told us would yield 40 bushels to the acre, when we were there, just before harvest. Also some $1500. worth of wood ready to put on the market. He pledged.$100. toward a printing press. On the strength of that, and other pledges we bought the press. Having a son-in-law who was a scoffer and hatter of the saints; he bought him a farm, went back on his promise to the Lord, and lost salvation, and has groped in the mists of darkness ever since. Told me he would give all he had if he could get back to where he once was. His robbing God also resulted in an utter failure of crops on his farm the next year, and he told me he did not raise enough to keep his family over winter, and raid he believed it was a mark of God’s displeasure. He is yet wandering in the blackness of darkness, and we greatly fear shall forever.

O that men would fear the Lord, and not rob Him, lie unto the Holy Spirit, and presumtuously sin against God after testing His great salvation. We have seen enough of God’s providence, to warrant, the conclusion that when God sees fit to let the human sharks loose on a person he will soon be stripped, however wise and prudent he may have been in accumulating and holding property in the past O that men would lay up their treasures in heaven where thieves cannot steal, nor the “extortioner catch it away.

Another case in Iowa; a preacher who professed holiness, had a large farm which providence had placed in his hands at a price far below its value. He was a warm friend of ours, we both having been in the same sect. In a meeting at his place we met, and with-stood a dark and pernicious spirit, he standing by us in the rebukes. After our departure, satan came in like a flood, and tempted him to think we were wrong. To some extent he gave way, and he accordingly was precipitated info darkness and confusion in which reason loitered on its throne. But he continued in supplication to God, until He finally came to him in great power, rebuking him into dumbness, and vindicating us. About a week later we were brought back, and before reaching his place in the morning we heard that he had gone insane. We found him tranquil and apparently in peace. But he uttered no word, nor had he spoken for some days. Presently be arose, took his Bible, beckened us to come along with him. We did so. His farm lay mostly in a fertile valley, but his buildings were on a very high elevation. We stepped a few rods from the house on the open hill, when suddenly he stopped, opened the book and had me read Isa. 58:1. “Cry aloud, and spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.” Pointing to the words, “like a trumpet,” he placed his hand on our breast, by which he indicated that he meant us. Then pointing to the words “lift up thy voice” he laid his hands on his own bosom, indicating that the command was enjoined pon him to join us in sounding the trumpet. Then he turned to another scripture, and pointed to these words of God. “My holy lull,” which by motions be showed us was that hill whereon we stood, and that farm. And to another text which required him to trust all in the hands of God. By jestures he made us clearly understand that himself and farm should be joined with us in sounding the trumpet. We returned to the house. In the afternoon while laying on a comfort and pillow on the floor, he arose grasped his Bible and turned to these words. “Now the hand of the Lord was upon me in the evening, afore he that was escaped came; and had opened my mouth, until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no more dumb.” — Ezek. 33:22. He then smiled and beckoned to us. We went to him and read the words. Whereupon he began to talk. Told us that after we arrived at his house he became conscious of the power of speech. But he was afraid to utter a word until God gave him the above words, and applied the words “he that had escaped,” unto us. To understand this, see Isa. 4,2-4, Jer. 51:45, and 2 Pet. 1:4. Of course the above words of Eze. related to an instance in which he was dumb through the hand of God, of. which you can read in chapter 24:27. But God used it in this case to let the man know that he might now speak. After that we conversed together freely, and we learned that our interpretation of his jestures was all correct. We asked him how he was to carry out the orders of Go I by joining on with us in publishing the Trumpet, but he did not know. We suggested that any way that God should show him we were willing. Either for him to sell and move to Indianapolis, Ind. where we were then located, or build an office right there in the country, or in Mt. pleasant, only 5 miles away, just as the Lord would direct him.

We came home, and in a letter asked him if the Lord was going to move him to our city. He said not; but never said we should move to him, or any thing about the matter, and when we next visited Iowa, we found him in utter darkness and confusion, and in those mists he is still groping, a wandering star, and cloud without water.

And in this chapter of fallen stars, duty calls out one more allusion to the chief apostate from the evening light. The safety of immortal souls demands it, and we shall clear our skirts in the name of Jesus. Since God has opened our eyes to read His Word, we have never seen 2 Peter 2, and Jude more strikingly fulfilled than in his case. A poor doleful, mist-enveloped wandering star. Sad enough indeed to move to sympathy and tears every human being, and all angels in heaven; and yet devil-possessed enough to require an utter renunciation of his spirit by all who would keep out of the devil’s coils themselves. In one letter he claimed to be sweetly saved, in another he is seeking. In the same communication tell an awful lie. and report that he is gloriously saved, filled with the Holy Ghost, and with fasting and “strong crying” is seeking an experience that few men on earth have gained. All this without even the fruits of repentance. What sport for devils, this pursuit of a pride-inflated, fancied, super-sanctified state, while yet in the chains of guilt, with no place of repentance. In the name of Jesus Christ, and in the fear of God, we must announce that this is the condition of that man. God showed it to us in a vision, besides his whole career since lost, proves it. Some are fool enough to think if a man can weep over his condition, he surely repents. But Esau “found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.” — John 27; Heb. 12:17. We have seen the poor man bury his face and weep bitterly and moan, and yet we could not trace one sting of conscience, nor ability to repent for his wicked deeds, and his crucifixion of the Son of God afresh, and putting Him to an open shame. Nor were the souls he had stumbled into darkness the weight of feather on his conscience. One moment he would, try to consecrate, and the next foam with devils, and declare that he would “die and rot and go to hell before” he would meet the Bible conditions of salvation. Our hearts were drawn out in great sympathy, in much prayer and supplication to God. Sometimes we really thought, be had found peace, and rejoiced with him; but the next day only proved that a formal consecration, and wrought up blessing, without a heart repentance, and evaporated like the morning dew. Afterward on going to Pennsylvania, we learned that over a year before, his sins became outward as Sodom, but Just was inwardly conceived, he had on the sly tried to blacken our character, which he has never confessed, but grew worse and worse in his presumptous lies in the sight, of God, privately; publicly at Stafford, Kan., and in Wyrick’s little heet that bears the smell of the pit from whence it came, none of which has repented of.

And now we learn that he has been to Geneva, Mich., and consented and is then brought to the Trumpet Office, and remains outside until some one else enters and reports that he had consecrated at their place. Had the man repented indeed of his sins, and found pardon, he would have been very free to enter and tell the good news. Though he has falsified the publisher, his feigned consecration led to no confession, hence lacked the fruits of repentance. Now we wish to say that we wast all men and women on earth who may meet that unhappy pair, to show kindness to t hem, for we know of no more pitiable specimen of humanity on earth, but we charge you in the name of Jesus Christ, do not be deceived by their satanic pretenses of salvation, lest you provoke God to His face, bring confusion and a curse on His cause, and damnation to your soul. Therefore receive, pity, and befriend them only as sinners, lost and wandering stars.

Should God in pity ever give them repentance. the courts in Paw Paw, Mich., will find it out; false oaths will be recanted, even if his perjury and adultery should expose him to the penitentiary. Even when we shall have been convinced that he has recovered his soul from the snare of the devil, and joyfully announce the same, knowing our sympathetic and sanguine nature, you will do well to have satisfactory evidences before you venture to manifest fellowship.

The man actually wrote that our advice had led to his illegal marriage; one of many positive falsehoods never confessed, and repented of. And when he asked his awful wife to forgive him. he afterwards went to Pennsylvania, and reported her guilty of the very things he asked her to pardon him for swearing against her.

Let no person be so silly as to think that a consecration can be acceptable to God that is not preceded by repentance, and Scriptural fruits of repentance.

O, Alas! the awful Word of God is now being fulfilled. And let all who wish to escape the damnation of hell, see to it that you never sin again. Watch carefully your heart lest the devil drop some seed of selfishness, or lust for evil things into its soil that will lead to “willful sin,” and drop you from divine constellation, a wandering star, in the mists of darkness forever. Oh, Forever!! Great God, we must warn men and women that from this plain of light, persons falling by willful sin, may never, and in many cases, can never regain their place in the kingdom of heaven. O that God would alarm men to flee this cursed backsliding. O take warning, and abide in Christ.

Turkey City, Pa.

Dear Saints: — One week ago last Monday I consecrated myself and all I have to the Lord, and was buried with Christ in baptism. I praise the Lord for a perfect salvation in Christ our Lord. We have glorious meetings in St. Petersburg. Glory be to God forever and ever! We have to stand amid great persecutions among our friends. I belonged to the united workman’s order, for many years, and it was hard to break away from them. My friends mocked me, called me a fool for so doing, and said the Lord would not help me. Praise God for the victory through Christ. I also used tobacco for 30 years. And the Lord cleansed me from it all. Dear saints pray for me, that the Lord may heal my body and restore ray health, and I shall glorify and praise His name wherever I am. We have to pass through many fiery trials, but we have victory through Him. Your Bro. in Christ.

NEW CHURCH TRACT.

—:o:—

WE have just printed a new tract by D. S. Warner, of nearly 40 pages the size of the Sabbath tract. It is carefully written, and very forcibly shows, the Divine origin, foundation, head, door, membership, organization, holiness, and unity of the Church, and the basis of unity. It also distinguishes between the True Church, and all sects. Shows the evil of Schisms, and proves the perfection and practicability of the Church, as founded by Christ, and set forth in the New Testament, without any man-made machinery, creeds, systems and manipulations. It refutes the falsehood that we have to be a sect, and nails every thing down to the Word.

Would to God that we could send it free every where. But it costs paper, ink, mailing expense etc. But we put it down just as cheap as we can, to cover expenses, and what we may give to the poor who cannot pay.

ASSEMBLY.

THE Lord willing there be an assembly meeting held, near Auburn, Ind. commencing Nov. 28th. Dear saints pray earnestly for the work in this place, and as many as can, come to this meeting. Auburn is the county seat of DeKalb county, and the following three railroads running through the place. Wabash; R. and O. and the Fort Wayne and Jackson. Any one coming by railway, write to Wm. Lahnum, Auburn, Ind.

MUST WE SIN?

THE Lord has enabled us to so present the subject, and answer the scriptures that are supposed to teach that we cannot live free from sin, that every mouth is stopped, and all men are forced to confess that a sinner is no christian, and a Christian is no sinner. And by request of some saints we are preparing the matter for a tract. Must we sin? or a conversation between Bro. Light and Bro. Foggy. The latter brings up all the darn scriptures, and the former throws light on them; so that even Bro. Foggy is convinced. We desire to send it out by the thousands free; but owing to the debt incurred in publishing so much free matter, we must wait until the Lord moves donations to pay expenses. Who will help settle the great question of sin and salvation? Amen!

NEWS FROM THE FIELD

—:o:—

Maria, Ohio.

Beloved Saints Greeting: — Our testimony is that we are saved and filled with the Spirit and triumph over the powers of darkness. We had a glorious victory at Deshler, O. where we have been for a few days. At first things were in rather discouraging condition on account of the teaching of false doctrines etc. On Saturday morning the Church met and fasted and prayed for the unity and power of the Holy Ghost. Bro. and sister Hill from Findlay, O. soon arrived with holy zeal for God, and aided in the work. Glory be to Jesus, for deliverance and glorious victory of the Church. In the evening Bro. Hill spoke the Word with power, and there was one consecration to the Lord. During the meetings the power of God was wonderfully manfested in our midst, and the saints were made to rejoice, and deed conviction rested upon the sinners. The saints assembled in an upper room at the house of sister Davis, to observe the ordinance of the Lord’s supper, and the washing of the saints feet. O what joy filled our souls, and the oil of gladness came in copious showers upon us all.

Five or six were healed of their deseases through prayer and faith by the anointing and laying on of hands. One old man sixty years of age was healed of a wound of 56 years standing. When he was 9 years of age he run a dry apple limb into his limb just above his ankle. He tried medical aid many times, but all failed, and left it a painful running sore, which was swollen and inflamed, causing intense suffering. But when the healing balm of God’s mighty power was applied, he shouted that the pain was gone, and he leaped for joy, praising God that his afflicted limb was as good as the other one. The rich showers of God’s love came upon the Church and they were edified and strengthened, and we think in a great measure restored to its former enjoyment and experience. We trust they will be careful in the future and not believe every wind of doctrine, and curious notions and opinions of men, even if they do seem to come from a holiness standpoint, but “try the spirits,” and see whether they are of God or not. There was one converted after the meeting closed, and we hope to hear of others yielding to the Lord. On Monday morning we started to our home at Maria, O. Your Bro. saved and sanctified.

A. M. Dick.

Cheshire, Mich. Nov. 19, ’89.

Dearly Beloved in Christ: — Praise God for the real transparent glory in my soul this morning. Truly the works of our God are wonderful and glorious beyond expression. Since our last report, God has been with us in mighty power, keeping us doing his will in working for the salvation of souls. Glory to our God always causeth us to triumph over all opposing elements. After the meeting at Jamestown we went to Hanley, and held one week’s meeting in a school-house. There was good attendance and deep interest during the entire meeting. We feel that in the near future God will reap a harvest of souls at that place. There is a new methodist meeting-house there, that was built with the understanding that it was to be a union house; but their class- leader said we could not preach there be cause we preached against the sects. Never-the-less the majority of the members came to the meeting. Some of whom seemed honest and seeking light. May God help them to flee out of babylon into the kingdom of God. On Sunday 17th, we met with the Church at Diamond Springs, on Monday came this place and expect to begin meeting this evening. Pray for us that God may use us to His own glory. Amen! Your Bro. in the kingdom and patience of Jesus.

This is a campbellite neighborhood, and they fought from the first; but God was with us from the beginning, and gave us victory, and helped us to preach the Word with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven. Three dear souls escaped from their filthy cage and were blessedly saved although the opposition ran high, there was a good interest in the meeting, the house was crowded some nights to its utmost capacity. God helped us to pour out the truth to those dead formalists: There were seven or eight converted and three sanctified during the meeting. The meeting closed with deep conviction on the people; we left some earnestly seeking. The meeting was held near Napier. Holt Co., Mo. We are on the blood and fire line for glory with the go through in our soul. Brethren and sisters pray for us at this place. I ask the saints to pray earnestly for the healing of my lungs, this leaves me blessedly saved and wholly sanctified.

Yours in the bonds of love.

Dear Brethren: — May God bless you all abundantly. I praise Jesus for what He has done for me. I do praise God for helping me to see where I was; though I was professing sanctification. I realized some time ago the old carnal nature still in my heart: I then was unaided by the grace of God to consecrate all to Him, which was my reasonable service. Oh, praise the Lord! He filled my soul with joy unspeakable. My prayer is that God may give me grace to resist the devil at all times and claim the victory. I know I am saved and sanctified just now. Pray for me.

Dear Saints: — I am saved and praising God for this blessed evening light. I was a sect member, but when I heard the voice of the Good Shepherd saying: come out of her my people, I knew I was a child of God, and I was glad to accept the invitation. I knew the commandments, but I was not where I could obey them; for I was caged up in the Free Methodist seel. Praise God for the perfect freedom I feel in my soul? I am saved and sanctified and kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation. Pray for me that I may always be abounding in the faith.

Dear Trumpet Readers: — I praise God for salvation. I am in Webb City working for the Lord, and I realize the presence and power of God. There is much work to be done in this place, and I trust you will pray that much good may be done in the name of the Lord. I am one of the small instruments which God has chosen to do the little things. To-night finds me with real fire and victory in the Lord. We had meeting last night and the Lord wrought with us and poured out His Spirit of love, and many were convicted.

Dear Saints: — My soul is free in Jesus from all sin, from all weights, and I am rejoicing in God the author of eternal salvation. We are claiming God’s promise for wisdom as never before; that the little flock may not be scattered. The Lord is moving on souls and we are expecting a harvest here soon. One soul sanctified in our last meeting, and others are very desirous of getting back to God. Pray for us. Your sister in Jesus.

Dear Saints: — I praise God for salvation this blessed Sabbath evening, who has saved me, a wicked sinner, and now keeps me by His mighty power. When the age of 19 I found myself a wicked sinner in the sight of God, and felt I must turn and seek my soul’s salvation. I went to bed one night, but could not sleep, and at 2 o’clock at night the Lord broke the bands of satan, and I got up and asked my brother-in-law and Bro. Wm Smith to pray for me. What wonderful and Glorious joy came into my soul when the great weight of sin rolled off. Glory and honor belongeth to the great and merciful God, who does such wonderful things for those that will let Him. Then I presented my body a living sacrifice for entire sanctification, and felt that the Lord did the work, and then all run well for about 2 months, without a cloud or any carnal nature arising; but after that I began to grow weaker, and go to sect meetings. Then I would do things that displeased the Lord, and would have to ask His forgiveness. And continued three years living an up and down life. I would feel that I never would got where God could use me to His glory till I would agree to go to work in His vineyard for perishing souls. O brethren how I realize the wonderful weight that rests on the saints of God for the rescuing of precious souls, whose souls will he required of those who fight against God when He tries to invite them into the open field to work in His cause. Truly the harvest is great and the laborers are few. At last I felt that something must be done in the near future, or I would he cut off from the family of God. I knew my only way was to consecrate my time and every earthly desire to the service of God, which I did the last night of the Gratiot Co. Assembly-meeting of this year. And since that time I have heavenly peace in my soul. Glory and honor to Jesus who has set my soul at liberty; free in Christ. Praise His name! I expect to go to work for God as soon as the way opens. Dear saints pray mightily for Jesus to keep me humble and true to Him.

Your Bro. saved and sanctified and happy

Dearly beloved: — I praise the Lord for this wonderful manifestation of His presence in my heart just now; not enough that He came as the Saviour of the world nearly ninteen hundred years ago, and that He will come in the end of the world with power and great glory to claim His own, but He is now (present tense) dwelling in our hearts the hope of glory. He that keepeth His commandments dwelleth in Him, and He in Him: and hereby we know that He abideth in us, by the spirit which He hath given us. — 1 Jno. 3:24. Oh praise the Lord! “No man can say that Jesus is the Lord but by the Holy Ghost.” — 1 Cor. 12:8. “But when the comforter is come whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father. He shall testify of me. — John, 15:26, not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves, but our sufficiency is of God. — 2 Cor. 3:5. It hath not entered into the heart of man the things that God hathprepared for them that love Him, but God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit; for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea the deep things of God. I am saved, preserved, called and sanctified and kept by the power of God through faith. Amen!

Dear Saints: — May God wonderfully bless, and keep you saved continually. Amen! I am blessedly saved to-day and trusting in Jesus. Hallulejah! Oh it is so sweet to trust in Jesus and know that what-so-ever we ask we receive of Him because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. Praise the Lord! I am free from babylon confusion holiness. My name is written in Heaven. I belong to the Church of the first-born where I ever in tend to abide. With His peace like a river flowing deep in my soul. Glory to God! I am hid from the scourge of the tongue. Job. 5:21. And I know that my bread and water shall be sure. My delight is in the law of the Lord. Praise the Lord O my soul, and all that is within me praise holy name. Your free brother.

Dear Brethren: — May the clear Lord wonderfully bless you with all spiritual blessings and keep you filled with His love. My testimony is that I am saver from all sin, and sanctified to do the whole will of God. When we say the whole will of God, it means a great deal; it means to give up all things, soul body and spirit to the Lord, which are His, that He might cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I can testify this evening that God can and has healed myself and family of sickness several times. Since coming out of babylon and declaring that Christ should be our physician for both soul and body. Satan has afflicted us in the way of sickness many times. But praise God, we just relied upon His precious promises. For Jesus said: what-so-ever ye shall ask in my name, I will do it.” His promises are yea and amen unto those who believe on Him. Our trials are some-times strong, but His grace is sufficient; what-so-ever we ask, we shall receive. Dear Bro’s and sisters let us ever trust God for all things, for our lives are in his hands. Why can He not keep our bodies, well, as well as our souls? He created our bodies as well as our souls. And we are hot our own. He healed the people of their deseases while He was here on earth, and He is the same God that He was then. Pray for me dear saints that I may sink down deeper in God’s will each day and hour. Amen! Dear Saints: — May God abundantly help, and keep you sweetly saved in Jesus, walking in the light as He is in the light, that you may have perfect victory in your souls over the powers of satan, who goeth about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. I praise God for full salvation; for His Word, for the TRUMPET, for the experience of the saints, for this evening light, and I do praise His Holy name that I am saved from all sects and sectism; In short I will say from all sin, and that just now. Dearly Beloved Brethren: — May the grace of God abound in you richly in all spiritual blessings. Amen!

I feel led to tell you of the Lord’s wonderful saving and keeping power. Praise the Lord! In the nine weeks on our way from western Ohio to this place, we only had three days rain, for which we thank the Lord. The Lord our Savior wonderfully helped us and supplied all our needs and brought us safely to Windsor, among the saints there, where we were rested refreshed, and comforted in the Lord for all we had passed through. May the Lord richly bless them for their kindness to us. From Windsor to the Galesburg C.M., was an easy drive. We thank God continually for that meeting, and for the privilege of meeting so many of the dear ones here who are strong in the faith, and earnest in the work. Praise the Lord! Pray for us.

Dear Saints: — I am saved in Jesus’ blood. Hallelujah to God and the Lamb forever. Glory to God for sending Bro. Wm Montgomery here to preach the Gospel in its purity. You all seem so dear to me, although I have never seen you; but I love to read your testimonies. Oh praise the Lord for the unity of the Spirit and fellowship that makes us one in Christ Jesus. Pray for my father and mother; they are inquiring about holiness. They both believe in holiness, but never heard it preached. Pray for me that I may keep low at the feet of Jesus. Dear Saints: — I feel led to write and tell you what wonderful things the Lord is doing for me. Praise His holy name He sanctifies me wholly, and keeps me by His mighty power, and heals me both sou and body. Praise His holy name!

I had the heart disease, and the doctor said I was liable to die at any time, also had the neuralgia of the stomach for over two years, and was taking doctor’s medicine all the time, and it did me no good. I had done no work to amount to any thing for almost three years. About the first of July I was saved and sanctified and had hands laid on me for my healing. The Lord healed me, and I worked 19 days in haying and harvesting. Praise His name for His goodness to me. I do praise God for this full and free salvation that saves and keeps me from all sin. Oh do feel so good in my soul. Jesus saves and keeps me from the use of tobacco, which I had used over forty years. I do praise Him for His keeping power.

Dear Readers: — This is the first letter I have ever written as a free man. I can now say of a truth that the blood of Christ has made me free. O how glorious it is to feel that there are no bands nor straps, but that all have been cut asunder by being made free for Christ. I have been a member of the M. C. Church since my conversion, and have during the last year been crushed by the knowledge of a bondage that I was not willing to be free from. Seeing the corruption in the church, I sometimes felt as though I would shut my eyes and do my duty, but in this thought I was not blessed. The Lord called me out, and this morning I could not endure it any longer. I went to the parsonage and asked that my name might be dropped; I don‘t want a letter, I have letter enough within. I have the witness of the Spirit, and am so thankful that Christ is able to carry us through. The blood of Christ cleanseth from all sin. I have often thought of doing what I have done this morning but lacked grace, but I thank the Lord for victory. Praise God for freedom!

Pray for me that the grace that has brought me thus far will carry me through. Your Brother in Christ.

Dear Brethren — I thank God for this great salvation which He has given to me, and for the wonderful blessings He has bestowed upon us. In the last few weeks I have suffered much pain, but have put my trust fully in the Lord and He has relieved me of the pain. I am so thankful that I have received light on the true Church of God, and came out of the sects, and am so happy in my blessed Master who has so wonderfully saved me. I cannot express my joy. I do pray that I may, by the grace of God, be permitted to meet with the saints. I have forsaken all for Him, and He keeps me by His mighty power.

Dear Brethren: — I am praising the Lord this morning for salvation; He has saved my soul, and I am happy in His love. I know He has prepared a home for me beyond this vale of gloom, if I continue to trust in my blessed Savior. Praise His name forever! O I do love to live for Jesus alone; He has taken every thing out of my heart that was not of God, and I give Him all the glory. How sweet it will be when we all meet together in that happy home above, to sing God’s praise forever in that land of endless love. Pray for me, dear saints, that I may, ever do the will of God in all things.

Latourell Falls, Ore. Gospel Trumpet Readers: — I am still saved and ready for the coming of the Lord. If there is any place on earth that salvation is needed, it is in the far west. I hope that the Lord will send more of His glorious light this way, for gross darkness has covered this land, dear saints pray for me. Your brother in Christ.

Edward Cole.

Park City, Mich.

Dear Brethren: — May the Lord richly bless and keep you walking in the light, exposing the works of darkness which are daily cherished in sect babylon. O every man that bend the bow, let him shoot at them round about. Lift up thy voice like a trumpet. The people are fast drifting into gross darkness through the teaching of false shepherds, whether they are called Popes, Cardinals, Priests, Methodists, or by any other ecclesiastical name. St. Paul pronounced a curse upon every person, whether man or angel, who dare to bring in another Gospel differing from that which was preached by Christ and His Apostles. Are not these sect preachers equally guilty who change God’s holy Word by castaway part of it, and adding their own theory? Truly they have forsaken God, the fountain of living waters, and hewed for themselves cisterns that cannot hold water. Yet God says “I change not.” Still these blind babblers assemble themselves together to fight faith healing and holiness. It is evident that they have little or no faith in God, and are void of the Holy Spirit which guides into all truth. They seem to know nothing of the commands of Christ. “And He said unto them, Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel unto every creature; He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be damned; And these signs shall follow them that believe: in my name shall they cast out devils, they shall speak with new tongues, they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them; they stall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” — Mark 16:15-18.

Surely they who preach against these things must be under the curse. Cursed is the man who relieth on man, or maketh the arm of man His defence. “Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help, and stay on horses, and trust in chariots because they are many, and in horsemen because they are very strong; but they look not to the holy one of Israel, neither seek the Lord.” — Isa. 31:1. If we desire to be overcomers and conquerors, we must rely upon the Lord and trust Him in all things. Read 2 Chron. 13:12-18, and 36:8, 12. God is the same yesterday to-day and forever. Praise His holy name. Yet these hay and stubble builders assemble themselves together to fight faith healing which God has promised to them that believe and trust in His name. God pity the people and open their eyes that they may see their lost condition, and flee out of babylon prison and their vain abominations which are daily practiced and cherished by their deluded adherents. O we do praise the Lord for leading us out of sectarian bondage into the blessed evening light. I have been bound up in secret societies for many years. I have renounced them all, also the devil and all his works, and now we are free in Christ, looking unto Jesus the bright and morning star. Jesus is our physician of soul and body, glory to God, we can praise the Lord enough for what He has done and is still doing for us in the wicked place. We are kept by the mighty power of God from day to day. We are the only saints here but we have the promise where two or three are gathered together “there will I be in the midst” and that to bless, Our children are unsaved. We ask the wavers of all the saints, that they may give their hearts to God, who can work and none can hinder. Your Bro. and sister in Christ.

Dearly Beloved Saints: — I wish to give God all the glory for delivering me from the powers of satan. About two years ago I was made to rejoice in the Lord; but am sorry to say that afterwards, by looking at the imperfections of others, I allowed satan to plant hatred in my heart against the saints. But last Lord’s day, through prayer and the laying on of hands I was delivered from the powers of satan, and now I have liberty in Christ, and have the glory in my soul. Dear Saints: We do feel that the Lord wants us to write our testimony for Him. We praise God for all things, and especially for salvation from all sin just now. Oh, the wonders of His grace, that He saved a poor sinner like me, who has merited nothing. The Lord is merciful and gracious, but His mercy is from everlasting to everlasting to them that fear Him. O how we do praise God for His precious Word which is a lamp to our feet, and a light to our pathway. He pardoned us of our sins, and by a second work sanctified our nature, and took us out of sect babylon, and we are where the truth does not hurt us. Praise His holy name! New Pittsburg, Ind.

Sister Sarah J. Stick departed this life Nov. 8, 1889, aged 37 years, 7 months, and 10 days. She was married to Chas. Stick Nov. 2, 1873, and was the mother of three children, two of them preceded her to the better land. She leaves a husband and one little boy to mourn her departure: yet our loss is her eternal gain. “For to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” — Phil. 1:22. She gave her heart to God when young, and lived a devoted Christian. About three years ago she received the light of sanctification, and she presented her body a living sacrifice, holy acceptable unto God, and God sanctified her name. And on her death bed she testified to the same. During her last illness, which was quite protracted, she gave undoubted evidence of her peace with God. Although she had to pass through great, trials and persecutions, she endured unto the end; though somewhat weakened, yet she never gave up her confidence in God. She exhorted her friends to meet her in leaven. May God help her husband, father, mother, brothers and sister to heed to her untreaties. Just a few moments before she breathed her lust; while struggling with the monster death, she said: “all is well.”

TO THE WORKERS.

_____

GOD bless you all in this great work. Oh what a solemn and holy calling we have. What sacred, exemplary lives we should live. All our conduct and conversation should be seasoned with salt should command reverence, respect, and perfect confidence. God commands even the “young men to be sober-minded” — Titus, 2:6. How much more should all God’s ministers and field laborers “know how to possess your vessel in sanctification and honor” and “live soberly righteously, and Godly in this present world.” All they are commanded to be “sober, of good behavior” — 1 Tim. 3:2. O see to it beloved for Jesus sake that you all “continue in faith, and charity, and holiness, with sobriety.” This excludes all jesting, nonsense, and silly playing with young sinners where you stop. “Be courteous to all.” Kind, sociable and agreeable, but preserve the gravity of a sacredly called and anointed messenger of the God of Heaven. Both in and out of meeting only “speak forth the words of truth and sobriety.” – Acts, 26:25. This avoids all coarse, repulsive, and ludicrous expressions,” which excite the laughter of the “baser sort” who occupy the dark end of the congregation. And which are repulsive to the spiritual minded and grieving to the Spirit of God. Holy preaching may fill the heart of the pure with spiritual joy and their mouths with holy laughter, but it does not cater to the wish of the lewd and base, whose sinful ears are open for something over which they may burst out in bar room revelry. Therefore avoid all coarse and extravagant expressions and comparisons, and be “not as many which corrupt the Word of God, but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak ye in Christ.” — 2 Cor. 2:17.

And to you that have families, God help you to hear these words. “One that ruleth well his own house having his children in subjection with all gravity, for if a man knows not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the Church of God.” — 1 Tim. 3:4, 5.

(Continued on 4th page.)

Page 4

(continued from 3rd page.)

For I know him, that ho will command his children and his household after him and they shall keep the way of the Lord to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which He hath spoken of him.” — Gen. 18:19.

And the Lord said to Samuel, behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle. In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end. For I have told him that I will judge his Louse for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.” — 1 Sam. 3:11-13.

“And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.” — 1 Sam. 4:11.

God confided in Abraham, and blest Mm and his seed, because He knew he would command his household, and rear them in the fear of God. He rebuked Eli, and “judged his house forever, because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.” It is not enough to admonish your wicked children, for Eli did not. – 1 Sam. 2:22-24. But God judged his house and cut off his sons because he did not command or order his house, and have them under subjection. And the New Testament pronounces a man unfit to bear office in the Church of God that does not have his children under holy subjection. O ye parents, in this ungodly age, when the “children are disobedient to parents,” may God give you a double portion of grace, wisdom, patience, and firmness to govern your children and thus hold them back from the pit of hell. Especially you that take them along in the Gospel field. Children are more difficult to train when absent from home than at home. But by the grace of God you must have them under proper control, or you had better go home, or send your family there. In the first place parents should have good sense enough to know that it is an intolerable imposition upon the people that furnish you lodging and food, to allow your children to do as they please, annoy with unreasonable noise and clatter, soil and destroy at will. We were told of an instance where the preacher’s child got on the top of a bed with its shoes, and began to jump up and down, for sport, and the parents left it go. One of the family said, “If I were you I would not allow my child to do that.” To which the mother replied, “I would rather let her go ahead, than have a fuss.” And when the man of the house ventured to correct the child at times, its father cold it what to answer; which was not far from telling the child to sauce him. Such conduct is an insult to the people, a curse to the child, and an abomination in the sight of God. Preachers, children or any others, that are allowed to do as they please, are a nuisance at home and much more abroad. If you have not better judgment than to suffer your children to be a miserable pest wherever you go, you are too stupid to work for God; and if you know better and are too slack to do your duty, you are too shiftless to live salvation, and if you say you cannot govern them you are neither fit to raise children, nor take care of the Church of God,

I you have your children under the best of control; you cannot help being more or less burdensome to the people. But they are usually willing to suffer cheerfully if they see you doing youru tmost to relieve them of the same. But if you want to soon wear out your welcome, just let your little ones romp and tear, and dirty up beds, and things generally, and you show perfect indifference, or occassionly tell them not to do so, and then smile at their supposed smartness for doing it against your lazy orders. You need not be surprised if the unsaved of the family where you stop seem to be very hard hearted, and indisposed to religion. Neither need you wonder if your own ilbred children, grow up wicked, and prone to ways of death and hell, to curse your future life, and cast a crushing weight upon declining years. If your wife is not saved enough to take proper care of the children by your aid, and be a real help in the work, she and the little ones had better locate, and you ask God in faith to supply their needs. God bless the wives of traveling ministers You need much grace from God, and sympathy from the people. Do the best you can, and you will have the love of God and His saints, and will also win many stars for your crown. Amen!

QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED.

Wilbur, Wash. Mar. 1st 1889.

Dear Brethren:: — In an article published Feb. 15th, is a statement that “when persons fall from the first grace, they cannot be sanctified until they are justified again.” Do you mean when we fall from justification? (the first grace.) And what do you, or the Word of God, mean to express by “Fall!” Is it to reject, or openly, publicly, privately, or in any way renounce, reject, or despise Christ; or is it meant only to slide back and get cold without scarcely knowing it, when or where? Or does it simply mean to be surprised or suddenly overcome by an overwhelming temptation in a moment of weakness? If this means to “fall,” can a person who is instantly sorry for such weakness, at once step back into their former place in Christ? Even after being sanctified, and in some unguarded moment during some great trial of grief or temptation, were we to yield or be overcome by the enemy, could we, no differance what the circumstances surrounding us, as soon as we see our error, then and there instantly repent and again claim the sanctifying and cleansing blood?

What is sinning against the Holy Ghost? Is it to deny the experience after once having it and losing it? Is that to “fall,” if so, is it a different fall from the former? Can such a one who denies it, get forgiveness and be saved? If not, why? Is it because of their own unbelief that they will never want to seek again?

Explain Heb. 6:1-6. Does this mean that we cannot get back to a sanctified state? or does it mean that we must step back by faith without repentance unto justification? Must we repent and get justified again in order to get sanctified, when we have fallen from a sanctified state? or do we jump hack instantly into place again?

Also explain Heb. 10:26, where it speaks of “no sacrifice.” Explain Esau’s position. What is meant by the words “scrip,” and “sword,” in Luke 22:36-38?

Your Bro. in Christ.

ANSWER

Yes, we mean that when one falls from, or loses his justification, he cannot be sanctified until he again receives the pardon of his sins, or justification. The term “fall” as we use it to express our condition spiritually, does not mean to renounce or reject Christ in any way; (for we find that most men, though never making a profession, do not renounce nor reject Christ;) but simply that we have lost our experience. There is a vast difference in meaning between the word fall in this way of using it, and the way it is used in Heb. 6:6.

In Rev. 2:5, you will notice that it is possible to be restored after falling; in this, repentance is possible, in Heb. 6:6, repentance is impossible.

In a justified state, to he suddenly surprised and overcome by an unlooked-for- temptation or in a moment of weakness we give way to the enemy, and on seeing our condition we immediately flee to God and ask mercy at His hand would not be considered falling away; but to continue on in sinning, without repenting and getting back to the Lord, would be considered as falling away from grace. A person may backslide and yet not have fallen away in the meaning of Heb. 6:6. Yes, when one is instantly sorry for their weakness and giving way, and in their heart truly desire to step back in their former place in Christ, they can do it instantly. 2 Cor. 7:14, shows that when we “turn from our wicked ways,” He forgives us our sins; again in Mark 2:10-12, we see an instantaneous work.

The question asked above, if after we are sanctified we are overcome in any way and yield to the tempter etc. can we get back again to our former estate, and how should it be accomplished? Yes, by repenting or turning from our sins and asking God to forgive us, then make a consecration for entire sanctification. Again, can we at the moment of yielding to the temptation, when we see our error and sin, if we be truly sorry for it, can we then and there instantly repent in our heart, ask forgiveness and claim again the sanctifying and cleansing blood? Yes, we may claim it and many do claim it, and that claiming it is what brings a sad reproach upon the cause of God at the present day. Many after testifying to sanctification get crooked and perverse in their ways, and then come to the altar, go through the form of consecration, then testify immediately again to sanctification, when the fact is they are only justified. O dear ones it means so much to be wholly sanctified!

No! emphatically no!! we can-not honestly claim sanctification under the above circumstances; that would be only one work of grace, thus making justification and sanctification identical, one and the same thing. The fact is, sanctification is a separate, second, and distinct work; subsequent to, and separate from justification.

Question: — “What does the sin against the Holy Ghost mean?” “Is it to deny the experience after once having it and losing it?” “is that to fall, also if so, is it a different fall from the former?” Yes, to deny the experience after once having it, is virtually attributing the work of God to satanic influences, and what can be more blasphemous against the Holy Ghost than to deny Him after having felt the sanctifying power which is wrought by Him (the Holy Ghost.)

Ques. — “Can any one who denies it get forgiveness and get saved? if not, why?”

Ans. — No, because they are fallen away.

Certainly, Jesus is willing to forgive a repentant and truly broken spirit; but if they fall away they can-not have such a spirit.

Ques. — “Can you give an explanation of Heb. 6:1-6?”

After being converted or justified and having an understanding of the principles of the doctrine of Christ, we should go on unto perfection, that is perfected holiness; this gives us the experience mentioned in the 4th and 5 verses. If after having the said experience, we lose it and then deny it and say it is not of God, we certainly must attribute it to the works of the devil, then we fall away; and of course if sinning against the Holy Ghost seals our eternal doom, God will let us alone, and if God lets us alone by not operating upon us by His Spirit, we can-not repent, for we will have no desire to get to God again. There is no such thing as stepping back into former place by faith without repentance. In all cases, except sinning against the Holy Ghost we can get to God by repentance and faith, and in no other way. An explanation on the two experiences, (justification and sanctification) would be proper just here.

No person can be justified until after having an experience in conviction; that is, he must see his. own condition as a sinner; he can never repent until he sees this. So no person can be sanctified until he has first had an experience in justification. How long an experience must he have before making a consecration for entire sanctification? Just long enough to understand his incompleteness, that the cause of sin had been destroyed, having an earnest desire for it, and understanding that provision is made for it. This is the experience necessary for one to have who has never been through these experiences, for one who has had the real experience of of sanctification and has lost it, in getting it back again it is possible to receive forgiveness of sins and then immediately consecrate for sanctfication, (past experience is his instructor.) There is danger in both reaching after it too soon and not soon enough. Never seek for it until you are convicted for it and see the need of it; never put it off after conviction rests upon you.

Heb. 10:26. “For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins” etc. In the Old Testament we learn that sacrifices were offered to atone for the sins of the people, also that they were made frequently, thus caching us that the sacrifices made did not atone for the sins in the future but in the past; so when we offer ourselves a sacrifice upon the altar Christ Jesus and He accepts the offering and pardons our sins, it is only for past sins. If afterward, we sin, the sacrifice we did make, does not atone for it, but we must offer ourselves a new one, for the sacrifice we did make does not remain and is non- effective. If once in grace, always in grace the sacrifice would remain. Do not be deceived and think because once converted you are safe, but when you feel you are not in favor with God, offer your self immediately a new sacrifice.

Esau’s position was, that he had literally bartered away his inheritance and could not get it back, though he sought it with many tears; so we, if we barter away our inheritance to the same extent spiritually that Esau did literally, that is to fall away or sin against the Holy Ghost, we can-not gain it again. We have known persons who have lost their experience, and have since, a number of times, went through the form of consecration, and at times have shown a good degree of repentance, or rather Godly sorrow, and seemed to be wonderfully broken up, yet have not got back in the order of the Lord. We hear some say there is no salvation for them; this opinion is based upon the fact that they have made so many attempts to get back and seemingly could not; while the fact is the Judge has cast them into prison and says to them: thou shalt not come out from thence until thou hast paid the utmost farthing. It is not the Lord’s fault that they do not get back. We believe that the Lord’s Christ stands to-day with out stretched arms and says: “come back there is mercy for you;” and our prayer is that they may obey and pay the last farting.

Ques. — “Please explain what is meant by the word “scrip” and the word “sword” in Luke 22:36-38.”

Scrip means a small bag or wallet for carrying money in. Sword represents different things in the scriptures.

1st. An instrument of war. Matt. 26;51.

2nd. Grief and anguish. Luke 2:35.

3rd. Rule or authority. Rom. 13:4.

4th. The Word of God. Eph. 6:17.

In Luke 22:36, 38. the word “sword” might refer to authority or the Word of God. The plurality in the 38th verse may refer to the old and new dispensation. In those days a copy of the Scriptures cost very much, from the fact that the art of printing with type was not known and the way of copying the scriptures was expensive, hence the expression of our Saviour: Sell a garment in order to by a copy of the Scriptures, and that will be your authority methinks I hear Him say.

__________

GOD’S CARE FOR HIS CHILDREN.

—:o:—

PSALMS 34:7, in connection with Heb 1:13: 14. This word was first spoken by the Lord: see Matt. 26:53.

Before reading and searching out the subject, let us read the 34th Psalm from the first to the eleventh verse. There are three points of interest and instruction to be considered in the 7th verse.

First: the wonderful care of God, for the safety and peace of His children.

Second: the care here promised is but for one class.

Third: the fear of the Lord Biblically defined.

God here promises angelic protection to those who fear Him. But in this connection more especially is intended to be understood by us, as the angel, or Spirit of the Lord; the omnipotent, present, abiding, encircling power of God; or that holy element of safety invested in the Holy Spirit, for all who desire and trust for such glorious and unfailing protection. Within this wonderful power. God utilizes agencies; and among them are our reason, our own physical members etc. but also angelic agencies. When God speaks of angelic deliverance in the wonderful words of Christ in Matt. 26:53. and Paul in Heb. 1:13, 14. He is not in anywise speaking of the spirits of departed men, who have been dwellers upon the earth. By reading Luke 16:27—31, and other passages of Scripture we find this confirmed. I firmly believe that to all who are walking obediently up to all their light, is this promise: “Call upon me when thou art in trouble, and I will deliver thee,” etc., and also God intends that we shall afterwards glorify Him, by giving Him the open praise of our deliverance. While thus walking in the light, God will send angelic deliverance; but only when our own powers are insufficient, and no other “arm of flesh” or human agency is near, or sufficient to deliver us. History, testimony, the Word, and experience, all go to prove it.

One night about four years ago. I was miraculously delivered from a dangerous maniac, whom it often took six strongmen to hold to keep her from killing her family and herself. I am sure that superhuman power was sent on that occasion to deliver me in that terrible hour of peril. For I called on God, as there was no earthly help present, and my powers of speech or voice had tell me. I had been conducting holiness services and preaching in a strange town, and after services the landlady of a boarding house earnestly requested me to go home with her that she may inquire the way of salvation, as she had become awakened to “seek the Lord,” Shortly after retiring, I heard something moving under my bed, and at first I thought a large dog had come into my room; but soon it made another move and jolted the bed springs under me, and I distinctly heard the heavy breathing of a human being, as if trying to keep quiet. I asked God to change the evil intent or deliver me in some way; and He gave me the assurance — in that text I partly quoted — “And I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.” Well, the person came out in a hurry, and ran and unlocked the door and went out. I sprang out of bed and went to the door and locked and bolted it; praising God for my deliverance: and in the morning found that it was that insane woman who had escaped from her keeper that evening, and kept herself hid in a fence corner while they were searching for her.

Praise God, for grace and faith given of Him through the merit of His Son, which enables us to walk with Him in white, that to us even in sudden and unexpected peril, or need, is verified this wonderful promise written in His unfailing Word: “Before they call, I will answer: and while they are yet speaking I wiil hear.”

The inspired statement of this promised angelic care is made by Paul in Heb. 1:14. “Sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation.” Spiritualists have no such attendance or care; for they have no such hope, or even belief of salvation heirship. The unrepentant and unpardoned sinner has no personal hope of this blessed heirship: for he has not presented his personal check, at the great bank of salvation, with the signature of King Jesus thereon. But blessed be God, every obedient child of God is surrounded and attended by the pure messengers of heaven, and power of omnipotent God, and the ones both “purified and made white,” upon whose door posts the blood is spinkled, are heard and answered before they call: For He who is our mediator and intercessor asks according to the will of God, for He knoveth the mind of the Spirit.

3rd — The fear of the Lord Biblically defined: — The Psalmist said: it is the beginning of wisdom to fear the Lord. — Psalms 111:10. And the wisest man of earth sad of it: “The fear of the Lord prolongeth days.” — Prov. 10:27. And again the Psalmist says: There is no want to them that fear the Lord. No unsupplied need. How wonderful! Well these quotations are sufficient to convince any searcher of truth, the meaning of these words: “The fear of the Lord.” Some one says: fear is effeminate; slavish; bespeaks cowaradice, a lack of bravery and courage and hope Let us see if that is the kind of fear meant here. In this quotation of Psalms 34:9. There is no lack to those that fear Him. This shows that such persons are not lacking even in courage etc. Then no slavish or harassing fears, such as cause trembling or unrest are included here, to make up the fear of the Lord. The wise man says in Prov. 8:13. “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil.” Yes, we all think that we hate evil, and take comfort in believing that this is the declared biblical meaning of that term, that therefore we may be considered among that happy class who fear the Lord; and therefore among the favored class of God to whom all these blessed assurances of safety, care, supplied needs, wisdom, long life, etc. as in these scriptures already quoted. But let us make a thorough investsgation and see what is said in the “Word of life” about those who fear the Lord. To you dear sinners who want long life, read Prov. 10 27, and see that sin and wickedness shortens life, and to you belongs the “fear that hath torment.” “Perfect love casteth out fear.” — 1 John 4:18. It casts oat all slavish, corroding fear. O hasten to get your sins pardoned of God; and the principles of inborn sin cast out, that only the fear of God remain.

Dear sinner read Prov. 14:27; herein is promised power to depart from the snares of death, for the fear of the Lord is not only to hate evil, but it is life; a full “fountain of life.” And you girls who are apt to covet praise and beauty, read Prov. 31:30, 31. She that feareth the Lord shall be praised. Read it, then call on God for the true beauty, and shine for Him alone.

Now please read Malachi 3:16-18, and Prov. 22:4. “By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor, and life.” Then let all seek and obtain the blessd experience of salvation and receive His protecting care.
