NEW YEAR’S GREETING.

—:o:—

GOD grant you, clearly beloved saints, and all our readers a happy New Year in Christ Jesus. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed ns with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: according as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love. — Eph. 1:3, 4. Truly the Lord has been very good to Israel through the past year. The Gospel work has gone steadily forward. Many new fields have had the glorious Gospel of Christ preached in the pure evening light, and many souls are rejoicing for perfect salvation in Christ Jesus, who, less than one year ago were in dark ways of sin. The Church of the Firstborn, the Body of Christ, has increased with the increase of God.

Personally, we are happy to testify that every second of the past year has found us fully saved, and enjoying complete triumph over all the powers of the adversary. It has been the best year of our life, and the happiest. The accuser is utterly cut off, and no approach of the devil has been able to depress our spirit, or cast a shade over the joy of the Lord in our soul, for a single moment. The natural, spontaneous flow of our blissful heart perfectly fulfills this precious commandment: “Rejoice evermore; and again I say rejoice.” O what an infinite debt of gratitude our ransomed soul owes to God. How His eternal weight of love has settled us down in the depth of humility and meekness before Him, and low down in His holy will, which, we can truly say, is sweeter lo us than life. Oh how wonderful, wonderful the revelations of God in our happy soul! His Word flows out of our mouth like a fountain pressed by an ocean head. God has given us very good health. O how very blessed He makes our life. Help us, dear saints, to thank and praise Him for His precious grace and manifold mercies bestowed upon us. “Holy and reverend is His name,” “and greatly to be praised.” Thank God, our little company have complete victory over the accuser. The little ones have labored nobly with us in the battle for perishing souls. They all are filled with the blessed fulness of the Holy Spirit, and are strong to labor for the Lord. “Thanks be unto God who always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of His knowledge by us in every place. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish.” — 2 Cor. 2:14, 15. The Lord Jesus Christ, has fully demonstrated this fact, that holy men and women can labor together in His vineyard, as they did in the apostolic times, without the shadow of an appearance of evil. We have labored in some localities where the cause of Christ has been cursed by ungodly conduct of professed workers for Christ; in consequence of which much prejudice existed against this Pauline line of work, and many did not want us to come with our holy little force; but God sent us there all the more, and every mouth was stopped from the beginning of our appearance, and testimony in the Spirit of God. And there is not one place that we have labored, but what we have left behind us the fire of God burning in newly saved souls, perfect confidence in the hearts of saints and sinners, and even the enemies of the truth; and a warm welcome for our return at any time. Instead of prejudice and opposition being stirred up, and left raging, it has been lived and preached down by the all- conquering love of God, and a holy deportment. O how often we have been led to thank God for dear sister Smith’s sanctifying presence, as a mother in our pure love endeared family. Over three years ago the Lord showed us that we should have a company of fellow-laborers, and how blessedly He has made up our company Himself. May God raise up, and equip many such heavenly companies as He has given us, and send them forth, flying every where, to glean the few precious grains of wheat that can yet be gathered before the awful fire shall go through the stubble and burn them to ashes. In the name of Jesus Christ who died for our redemption, we charge upon all the holy remnant to be diligent for the rescue of lost souls. Whoever has full salvation, the perfect love of God, and this present truth, and glorious evening light in your soul, can be useful in the hands of God. And it matters not how untalented, if you are only humble in heart, and feel a holy sympathy for human souls, your Bible reading, testimony, and exhortations will be mighty, and astonishing to the people, compared with the husks droned out by the “dumb dogs” of babylon; and sinners shall be converted to God. Oh, in the name, and love of Jesus, brethren, get out from home and bring poor unhappy souls to Christ, who will bless your labors, and Heaven will reward you richly. Let many companies march out like regiments and rush to the battle where ever the captain leadeth. Let the Churches in every locality send appointments to every door that is open, and that you can pry open. God help you to break into the dungeons every where, and say to the prisoners, Go forth and he free. “The people that do know their God shall be strong, and they shall do exploits” — yea, “many shall run to and fro.” And ye that God permits to stay most of your time by the sheaves you have gathered by the blessing of God around you, do not forget that you can “sow by the side of all waters,” by “sending thither the feet of the ox and the ass.” — Isa. 32. Namely, give your means to support others and their families, who are called and willing to go forth. O God baptize all thy saints with much “LOVE INDEED” toward each other and toward all mankind. Yea! and faith that will venture to do good and prosper in it. For “there is a giving that enricheth, and there is a withholding that impoverislieth.” “Give, and it shall be given.” God help you to believe this and act accordingly. “As a man thinketh so is he.” If he thinks he can not raise more on his whole farm than sufficient to support his family, so it will be. But if he will believe God, and consecrate his gain unto the Lord, and expect, by the blessing of God, to have much to devote to the cause of Christ, so it will be. He will be able to do much for the Lord, and still have more left.

Dearly beloved readers, please also suffer the word of exhortation respecting the needs of the publishing interest. The publisher tells us that there are $400 standing on the book that is back on subscription for the TRUMPET. Now we do not wish to give the least particle of trouble to the poor who cannot pay. God bless all such; you are welcome to the paper, and if you have a relish for the precious truth never stop your paper because not able to pay. Bo free, beloved, to write and state your circumstances, and request the paper continued. But we do most humbly beg of all you who know you are behind, and possibly can pay to do so at once. There have been very large expenses to meet in the months past, and some bills remain unpaid. O what a blessing if all who can would send in your small amounts. The same would meet our present needs. Please, dear readers, do not neglect this matter for Christ’s sake. And to all who are not in arrears, if you have an offering to make to the Lord, you will be blessed in the deed, and also rewarded for the same. “For whatsoever good thing a man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord.” O send in your New Year’s offering unto the Lord, of whatsoever you may have to spare, whether it be money or necessities of life. Some kind saints recently sent a box from Western Ill., a sacrifice well pleasing unto the Lord. God bless their dear souls. Beef flour, white or graham, especially the latter, meal, fruit etc. would all bring the divine blessing upon both the TRUMPET family and the donor. For it is indeed blessed both to give and receive. But the former more blessed than the later. So the Word of the Lord assures us.

One thing more in this connection, let us urge upon all our readers, and all lovers of the truth, that a more dilligent effort be put forth to get subscribers for the paper. Let all in the held press the matter. Speak to men and women individually: you can do a good work by getting them to take the paper, and. thus leave the Gospel sounding in their ears after you are gone. Please do all you can to enlarge the circulation of the Trumpet, and God will bless your soul in the effort. When you find honest hungry hearts that are too poor to pay, send their names, stating the facts, and the paper will be sent in the name of the Lord. The usual commission will be given to those who get new subscribers, if you wish to take it. Also any brother or sister who is in the business of canvassing for a living, who are poor, but worthy, may write to the publisher for special terms. If unknown to us, it would be well to get a recommend from some Elder of the Church of the Living God. Brethren knowing any such at any time will please call their atteneion to this item.

The demand for a children’s paper is quite large, and it is desired to start the same as soon as practical, probably in the spring.

Dear Bro. E. E. Byrum has kindly consented to assist in the editorial work. As Office editor, upon him will devolve the work of examining and correcting articles sent in for publication. Let all the saints pray God to give him wisdom for this calling, and let all who write, cheerfully submit to his decision. We have said, and repeat that any person who has not grace of God enough to have his production inserted in the waste basket, has not grace enough to write what is worthy of insertion in the Lord’s paper. We who know how much and what quality of matter is on hand to fill the paper, are the only proper judges as to what is best to use, and how much some articles had host be shortened. So beloved, please be patient in all these things, and have the “charity that thinketh no evil.” Let all who are led of the Lord write, and if all cannot find place, your labor is not in vain in the Lord; the pratice will improve you for the next effort. We especially solicit News from the Field. Let every good work of the Lord be briefly reported. Under the head of news, give news; tell what the Lord has done. These reports should be greatly multiplied, and will be; but for this reason the reports should be condensed so there will be room for all. Also announce meetings, and keep the saints informed so that they may come and assist in the good work. We desire to be the servant of all the servants of the Lord to assist them in all their labors in the glorious vineyard of our God. We are very thankful for the sweet fellowship, co-operation of such a host of pure, affectionate, and devoted ministers of Christ, and we are daily praying the Lord of the vineyard to increase the laborers in the great harvest.

As Bro. Byrum will sign his name to articles he writes, there is no need that we sign our name at all. Of course it is understood that all articles having no signature are of the editor. Pray for us, dearly beloved; we also do for you all. Amen!

CLEANSED FROM ALL SIN.

—O—

Dearly Beloved Saints: — It seems to be the will of the Lord for me to write a few lines to the saints and readers of the GOSPEL TRUMPET. This very hour while I write, I am saved and sanctified by the blood of the Lamb. I have the victory over every thing that is not of God. For whatsoever is horn of God, overcometh the world.

Dear Brethren, I find that our trials are to try our faith, which is for our good. God proposed, through Jesus Christ, to redeem men from the horible pit, into which the devil has engulfed the whole world. This doctrine is being promulgated in these last days, having a form of godliness and denying the power thereof; from such God’s children are commanded to turn away. The sinners and ungodly of this world are gathering fuel to burn their souls through all eternity. We can not get away from God. This is what the world is doing today. They know they are wretched sinners, but the devil has many hiding places for guilty man to try to conceal away from God. The image of God imparted to man as holiness and righteousness; and He ordained it so before the foundation of the world. So, my dear brethren, sanctification denotes in a general sense the ceremonial or ritual consecration of a person or thing to God. In making truly and perfectly holy what was before polluted and defiled. To be wholly sanctified, means to be saved from all sin; to be pure in heart; to enjoy such a state of Christian experience as to be entirely separated from the world, and redeemed from every stain and pollution of sin, so that we live no longer to ourselves, but are wholly consecrated to the service of God. The doctrine of sanctification or holiness is the central idea of revealed religion, and is of superior importance. The necessary prerequisite of holiness is prominently set forth in the Old and New Testament, And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. — Ex. 19:6. For I am the Lord your God. Ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy for I am holy. — Lev. 11:44, 45; Isa. 62:12. Let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God — 2 Cor. 7:1. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification. 1 Thess. 4:3. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord — Heb. 12:14. The great and glorious object of the advent of the Son of God upon the earth was to destroy the works of the devil; (1 John 3:8) to save His people from their sins; (Matt. 1:21) to redeem us from all iniquity and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works; (Titus 2:14) that He might present it to Himself a glorious Church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. — Eph. 5:27. It is not only the inestimable privilege, but the solemn and inspirative duty of every believer to be entirely holy. Believers must be washed from all the impurities of sin; be cleansed from all filthiness of the flesh, and spirit, and be redeemed from every affection and desire which are contrary to the law and will of God. They are therefore commanded to be holy; (1 Pet. 1:14-16) to put off, concerning the former conversation, the old man which is corrupt according to the deceitful lust; (Eph. 4:22; Col. 3:10) to lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us: (Heb. 12:1) and to keep themselves unspotted from the world; (Jas. 27) for no unclean person hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God; (Eph. 5:5) yea, only the pure in heart shall see God (Matt. 5:8.) There is always something remaining in the believer, after conversion, that is not in perfect order and harmony with the will of God. It is called in the Scripture, carnality, indwelling sin, the body of sin, body of death, the old man. It is an undeniable fact that exists, as frequently indicated in the Word of God; and as verified and corroborated by a uniform experience of all sanctified believers in every period of the world. But whatever disorder may remain, thank God, there is a fountain opened to the house of David, and the in habitants of Jerusalem for sin and uncleanness. Zech. 13:1. Which cleanseth from all pollution; for the Lord is not only willing to pardon sins, when a person comes in the proper disposition of mind and heart, but also is cleansed from all unrighteousness; (1 John 1:9) to purify the heart; (Acts 15:9) for the blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, cleanseth from ALL sin. (1 John 1:7) And every one that hath this hope in him, purifieth himself even as He is pure. Whosoever committeth sin, transgresseth the law; for sin is the transgression of the law. And ye know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him is no sin. — 1 John 3:3-5. It is of pre-eminent importance that every follower of Jesus, seek diligently with all the heart to be redeemed wholly from all remains of the carnal mind; from all evil; no matter how and when it is obtained. The sooner this is gained, the better in all respects. It brings a cleansing that is needful, the change must be instantaneous. Stop not until the work is wrought in your soul, if you desire to be fully qualified for Heaven and eternal glory. God bless all His saints in Christ. Amen! Your Bro. under the blood, saved and sanctified.

WHERE SHALL I SPEND ETERNITY?

This great question comes to every person in this life, and requires a positive answer and decisive action. We are free moral agents, and it lies within our power to select our course in life, and at once decide whether we shall forever enjoy the bliss of Heaven when this life shall end on earth, or whether we will spend an endless torment in hell.

The Word of God teaches two ways: The narrow way, which is the way of salvation leading from earth to glory, where the angels dwell in pence with joyful songs of praise. The other is the broad way of sin, leading to everlasting destruction and torment with the cursed demons of hell. It is necssary that we prepare now to meet God in the great day of judgment, when we shall have to give an account of the deeds done in the body; and if our sins and iniquities have been washed away through the atoning blood of Jesus, it will be well with us in that day.

And Christ says: “Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of Heaven.” — Matt. 18:3 Then there will be no chance for the person to enter Heaven, who has not been converted. Although they may have lived a good moral life, and tried to be honest in all things, yet unless such persons comply with the Word of God’ there will be no hope for them; neither will there be any hope for the hypocrites and all those who are not at peace with God. Many imagine that they are all right; and that God will have mercy on them when they come to die; yet their heart is far from God and their life is full of iniquity. Jesus says: “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of Heaven but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in Heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy name? and in Thy name have cast out devils? and in Thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I confess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

The Word of God positively teaches that there is a time coming when it will be too late to seek God and make peace with Him. “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold now is the day of salvation. 2 Cor. 6:2. “Choose ye this day whom ye will serve,” for “My spirit shall not always strive with man,” saith the Lord.

Then “Seek ye the Lord while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near,” lest ye be like the foolish virgins who came after the Bridegroom had come, saying Lord, Lord, open unto us; ” but the door was shut, and He answered and said: “Verily I say unto you, I know ye not.”

“Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of Man cometh.” To the person who desires to continue in sin a little longer, and waits for a more convenient time to get salvation, the Lord “Shall come in a day when he looketh not for Him, and in an hour that ho is not aware of, and shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Matt. 24:50, 51.

“There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.” “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” Psa. 9:17. It is a dreadful thing to even think of an unsaved person appearing before God in the day of judgment; only to hear Him say: “Depart from me ye cursed into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.” But with the righteous it will not be so; for the righteous shall enter into life eternal.

“Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.” Isa. 55:7

None but the pure in heart shall see God in peace. Then let us heed the earnest call of Christ and give our hearts to Him while we may; then when God comes to judge the world, we will gladly enter in through the pearly gates, into the celestial city; with joyful songs and shouts of praise to our Heavenly king. Jesus is gently calling, and earnestly pleading for all to come unto Him; and offers salvation full and free to as many as will believe on His name, and do His commandments; and He says: “Behold, I come quickly: and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.”

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

—:o:—

Fenwick Ont. dec. 13, 1888

Let all the saints of God rejoice, and thank God that He has blessed our humble labors in this place to the accomplishment of much good. Blessed he the name of Jesus, to whom we ascribe all honor, and glory. We had only corresponded with Bro. John E. Smith of this place, and had not much idea of the stage of progress the work had attained here. But we are happy to say that we found more dear saints here than we had expected. The number of the names of the saints in this place are about twenty. A few good souls have come to the meeting from other points and we hear of little groups scattered about in several places. But we found the dear ones in this place much discouraged and scattered, and some had about entirely let go their confidence, and but very few were fully clear. The enemy of all righteousness had plotted to destroy the good work, “But thanks be to God who always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of His knowledge by us in every place.” “For we are not as many which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ”. — 2 Cor. 2:14, 17.

We found the dear souls honest, and ready to throw themselves down at the feet of Jesus, and walk in the light as he is in the light. A few have been converted, several restored, and some sanctified wholly. But it was not until yesterday that the glorious canaan sky became perfectly clear over the Zion of God here. We met at two o’clock P. M., quite a congregation present. After an hour or more of Gospel teaching, one soul converted, and one brother consecrated for entire sanctification the people all withdrew but the saints, and and no meetings having been announced for nights this week, it pleased God to keep us there until about ten o’clock at night. The blessed word and Spirit of God searched out every thing that was a bitter root and obstruction to the cause of Christ. Praise God! the Church all melted and flowed together like pieces of lead in the fire, and all hearts were knit together in perfect love and unity, and great billows of glory broke upon all hearts; the little bethel was filled with shoutings of grace, grace unto Jesus Christ the Headstone.

All bowed around the altar; some more received entire sanctification, and many were filled with mighty power. O it was a time of great joy in Heaven, as well as on earth. God bless His dearly beloved saints here; we are truly thankful to Him that He sent us over here to help their faith, and share their joy of complete deliverance from the accuser, the devil; and their happy reuniting of heart and soul in the strong sweet bonds of pure love.

We can say that we find a moderately fair farming country ,and we cannot observe the slightest difference between the people here, and in the states. And more than ever we have learned, that so long as governments allow a free conscientious worship of God, their form is quite immaterial. We do not see that people have any special advantage by living in the states, over what are enjoyed here. If any difference farmers do not pay as heavy taxes here as in the states. Local option temperance laws are given the people, and some counties have no saloons. And one blessed thing Canada has reason to thank God for, is the fact that all liquor selling establishments are strictly compelled to close early Saturday evening and not open until Monday morning. This law enforced cuts off nearly one half the mischief of the nefarious business. Sabbath observance is also far more complete here than in the states. We were blessed with good order, and find the way open for the gospel freely.

We have various calls, and will probably remain a month or more. Let all the saints of God pray for us. We are all in good health, and mightily filled with the Spirit of the living God, and ready to do His sweet will. Amen.

—:o:—

St. James Mo., Dec. 4, ’88.

Dear Brethren: — May the Lord bless you and fill you all with real pure love. May you all rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.

Meeting closed at Vichy last night with wonderful victory on the Lord’s side. Hallelujah! The meeting commenced the 24th of November. When we came there, things were in a very had shape; nearly all of God’s dear children in a backslidden state. God gave us wisdom in dealing with them, and enabled us to lead them out clear once more, into the sweet canaan of rest. Blessed rest from all sin. Hallelujah! During the meeting there were several consecrations for pardon, and 25 or more for sanctification. To God be all the glory. We had one ordinance meeting; commenced at 3 P. M. and continued until 8 o’clock with mighty melting power. There were nearly 40 took part in obeying the blessed Lord. God wonderfully blessed them while they obeyed him. O such melting love and golden streams of eternal glory that filled our souls was just wonderful; it was indeed a feast of the prodigal’s return. Poor souls; they were nearly starved while away from their father’s home. The brethren denounced by Bro. J. P. Bailey some time ago in the Trumpet, 3 of them, made a confession, came to Jesus, and was melted down by the sweet melting love of Jesus. O it was just wonderful to see these brethren come together; they embraced each other, leaped and shouted. O how good the dear Lord has been to them in redeeming them once more, and making them one in Christ Jesus.

Vichy is 12 miles from St. James. In this neighborhood is where the devil led so many off into those manifestations. Every one in there, as far as I know, was set free and renounced the whole thing and were all filled with the Holy Ghost. The lesson they have learned will be to the glory of God. O that God will keep them low down at Jesus’ feet, filled with the sweetness of heaven. O how their dear faces did shine with the glory of God as they were all baptised into the one body; they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and great grace was upon them all.

Hallelujah! O how good the dear Lord is to the children of men. Bless His name! We came to-day six miles north of St. James; will begin meeting in the Matlock School-house tomorrow night, to continue as long as the Lord wills. If the Lord wills we will go from here to St.James and hold meeting in the town. There are many doors open for work to be done. We have an urgent call to go to Bunker Hill Ill., about 60 miles from St.Louis Mo. The Lord seems to lead us that way; if we do come into Ill., we expect to go on into Ind. and Mich., and meet some of the dearly beloved saints of God in the east and north. I have long prayed the Lord to open our way, and I believe He is doing it. Any one in Ill. or Ind. wanting meeting, write us at Urbana Kan. We are traveling with a hack and can work our way through.

Your Bro. saved by the blood.

J. P. Haner.

LATER

O Hallelujah to God who giveth us the victory over the world the flesh and devil and has caused the truth to triumph in St. James. Meeting closed with wonderful victory over the powers of darkness, removing much prejudice from the hearts of the people. Glory to Jesus! There were 12 consecration for entire sanctification. Bro. M. Lewis was reclaimed, returned to his father’s house, and we had a wonderful time rejoicing. Bro Sennie, a minister of the Baptist sect was sanctified wholly, and received a wonderful baptism of the Holy Ghost; he left the sect. He also was captain of the Masonic Fraternity, came out free for the Lord. As I know all about Masonry, God wonderfully used me in his case. God wonderfully bless Bro. Sennie. He will be baptized and ordained. From here we go to Bunker Hill Ill. Pray for us.

I am your free Bro. sanctified wholly.

Dearly Beloved Trumpet Readers: — May the everlasting God fill you with all the fullness of His love. May you be kept blameless until the coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

I am blessedly saved this morning, and walking in this blessed evening light. There are a few at this place who have not turned against the blessed Son of God, and are willing to take the whole divine truth. Some have laid their armor aside, and said they have done enough for God. Read Zcehariah 11:17. I am so glad we have His everlasting Word for our counsel. Praise God for a complete salvation! We are having blessed meetings. God sent Bro. and sister Conley from Kansas, to get saved. They had lost salvation, but are blessedly saved now. Three colored sisters have stepped into the all-cleansing fountain. We would love to see some of the true saints of God at this place, especially Bro’s Speck and Kilpatrick. Your Bro. under the all-cleansing blood.

Dear Brethren: — Praise the name of Jesus for saving my poor soul and sanctifying me by a second work of grace. At the camp meeting last fall, at Red Valley, the Holy Spirit led me to the end of my faith, and patience has been doing her perfect work, and now I can say, I am perfect, entire, wanting nothing. I had been mixed up and under delusions, but praise God, He has straightened me out, and permitted me to overcome through the blood of the Lamb and the word of my testimony; and we are out in the name or the Lord, working for the salvation of souls.

My wife, sister and I came to this place and commence meeting in the name of the Lord: The people seemed to be very much discouraged and indifferent in regard to the salvation of their souls. But praise God, His truth was proclaimed with the power of the Holy Ghost sent down from Heaven, resulting in the consecration of eight souls for salvation. Two were delivered from the filthy habit of tobacco. There was much opposition by two carnal preachers, but the whole congregation stood up for the truth, and the enemy was defeated. All praise to Jesus. The Lord is opening up other places for meeting.

Dear Saints of the Most High: — I wish to testify to all, that I am gloriously saved just now. Hallelujah! I have had some grand experiences of late; have felt the chastening rod of the Almighty laid on me severely for not obeying the Spirit. I should have gone into the field three weeks before the assembly; but having a great desire to see the brethren, remained until after the assembly. Right after the assembly we started for this place; caught a very bad cold before starting, and seemed to keep adding one cold after another, which took deep hold on my lungs; in the meantime my lungs became badly effected. We arrived here and found the place, that we expected to hold meeting in, shut up on account of school in session. But could not have preached if every thing had been in readiness, on account of the condition of my lungs. The morning of the 1st of Dec., before rising from my bed, while meditating, the Lord gave me a look into eternity and the grave. In a moment the past four or five years of my labor in the ministry rolled before my eyes. I saw every crooked move that I had made, and every error. O my heart melted within as never before, and I cried out: Unprofitable, unprofitable servant. O God Thy mercies are so great. It seemed to me that the books were brought forward and the settlement made. The Spirit said, We’ll chop the past and commence anew. O how the glory filled my soul, and my body Avas touched also. I tried, with great difficulty, to preach that night. On the 2nd of Dec., near about 12 o’clock, we met at the Buffalo school house. Before this I had given up to depart and be with Christ; but when I saw the crowd of perishing souls, I dropped on my knees and said: It is Christ to live. And the dear Father touched my body again, and we were enabled to preach in the power and demonstration of the Holy Ghost. Well, the Lord has been touching our lungs every time we open our mouths for Him, until our full strength hath nearly returned. O how we praise God for His saving and healing power manifested in my behalf. We feel that we have sank into God deeper than ever before in all our lives. The past is under the blood. We know nothing save Jesus and Him crucified, and the present is now with us to will and do according to His good pleasure.

We commence a meeting on the 18th of Dec. at the school house, one mile and a half Southeast of Grover Town.

Dear Saints, pray much for us, that the dear Lord may bring many souls out of the terrible isms and deceptions of night. Amen! Your Bro. in the labor and love of Jesus.

Cedar Vale, Kan.

In our last report we had stopped oft at Table Rock Neb., on our way to Stafford Kan. We found the little company of saints at that place in a real flourishing condition. We could only remain with them two nights. The last night we all met at dear Bro. M. M. Stover’s house where we all received food from the hand of the Lord. Of a truth the dear people of God at Table Rock have found the real salvation of God which hath shed the love, power and fire of God abroad in all their pure hearts. O hallelujah to God! We felt lifted up in God by hearing them testify to the completeness they had found in the Son of God. Amen!

The morning of Nov. 22, we (Bro’s Jas. Willis, A. J. Kilpatrick and myself) started for Stafford Kan., and reached the home of Bro. C. W. Cronk the 23rd. The same night we commenced meeting in the old school-house, which continued twenty-five days in the order of the Lord, and name of Jesus Christ. At this place we found a few that claimed freedom from all sectism, and also professed holiness of heart. Out of the few there were some who had a good experience and was of a humble spirit; in fact all who cut loose from the free-love element was of an honest heart. When the Word of God was preached to them, they began to search their hearts and life, and some of the number who claimed sanctification did not have the experience the Bible taught of sanctification. All such were so in the hands of the dear Lord to get down and die to all that was not of him. The meeting was one of success; poor sinners were made to feel the love of God come into their hearts, as they humbled themselves before the Father of mercy. During the entire meeting we had large attendance and good order. We did not have to ask attention once during the meeting. At Stafford we met a real kind hearted people. Many who felt the need of salvation asked us to pray for them, as we were about to leave them. More would have been done, if those who claimed to be called of God to preach, was of God, and full of salvation as they were in former days. Viz. J. C. Fisher and his wife (?) When they had the real fire of God in their soul, you could not get them to sustain their reputation, or fellowship ungodly men and women; neither could you persuade them to leave the work of God and hold singing- schools. In fact they had no time; but all their time was taken up in the salvation of

Page 3

poor lost souls. If nothing else could open their eyes, this one thing should. God help them to forsake their evil ways and let God manifest Himself unto them again. They are not to be hated, but pitied. The poor man came to see us twice while we were at Stafford, and instead of him manifesting the love of God as in former days, he gnashed upon us with a fault-finding spirit. He claims we are not of God, but wants us to fellowship him in his present condition God help all such to see that that is fully as sectish as the practice in babylon. “Agree to disagree.”

We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error. — 1 John 4:6. J. C. F. and wife (?) were in town during, the entire meeting and came only once to hear us preach the Word of God.

The last day of the meeting three were baptized by Bro. Jas. Willis, who is with us in the work of the Lord. The meeting closed with the washing of the saints feet, commemorating the death of the Lord Jesus Christ and testimony. There were twenty-five participants. We hope to hear of the little company of saints at that place ever holding up the real truth to the people, and walking upright in all things. Amen!

We are now about six miles southwest of Cedar Vale, at work for God. We ask all to pray for us. We are your Bro’s in the kingdom of God, made white in the blood of Jesus.

It may be that God will hold us in the West all winter, as we now have live or six calls in this state. If the Lord wills, we will till the calls in Mo. as soon as possible. Amen!

Dear Brethren: — May the wonderful blessings of God rest upon you and all of His little ones is my prayer. Amen!

I feel led of God to write my testimony for the glory of God. This evening I am saved and complete in Him wherein is all the fulness. O how glad I am that Jesus is the satisfying portion to my soul. He tells us to cast our burdens on him, so when we have trials and temptations, if we trust Him we find His grace sufficient for us. Praise God! I have been so completely cleansed and purified both soul and body that the old man is killed, and every root of bitterness taken out. I am now in full possession of the fruits of the Spirit, which are love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness ,goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, against such there is no law. Praise God! If we live in the Spirit, let us walk in the Spirit. Pray for me that I may do all the will of God and keep very humble at His feet.

Dear Brethren: — Grace and peace be multiplied unto you. My testimony is that God does wonderfully save and keep all those who put their trust in Him. Praise His name for ever!

I have never had such views of God’s wonderful love as I have had in the last few weeks. I seem to be all melted down info His eternal will, and truly can say:

“Nothing am I, every thing He:
Christ is all and in all to me.”

Glory to God for such a wonderful Savior. The Lord has opened up the way for us to have services every fourth Lord’s day at this place, in the morning. Any of the saints who feel led to come and teach us the way more perfectly will be made heartily welcome. So come on, brethren, there are souls here to be saved and only a few of God’s weakest ones to hold up the banner. The sects are very dead; joined unto their idols, but there are some that could be reached if some one would come full of love and the Holy Ghost. Such as come out give good attention to the Word. We are doing what we can, but we are very weak through the flesh: but Father sustains us and gets all the glory. Praise His name. Brethren, pray for us that we may be able to step into every open door and proclaim the glorious Gospel of peace to a dying world. Pray for the little church here that it rest in the arms of eternal strength. Amen! Your Bro. saved, sanctified and kept by the power of God.

OBITUARIES.

—:o:—

OUR much beloved sister Celia A. Byrum, Companion of Bro. E. E. Byrum. Publisher, was taken away from all her suffering here, to her peaceful rest with Jesus, Dec. 11, 1888. Aged 24 years. 4 months and 6 days. For some time she had been at the home of Mother and Bro. Fletcher Byrum, in Ranolph Co. Indiana, where her husband and sister Rhoda Keagy, her companion in labors at the TRUMPET OFFICE for the past four years, were taking cave of her. She had not been well for the past ten months. Many prayers were offered to God in her behalf, and several times she was anointed for healing in nearly every instance she seemed to be greatly helped, in fact some times she was healed of then existing afflictions. But soon after, some other form of physical trouble began to prey upon her poor body. The dear sister had good hope all through her prolonged suffering that God would raise her up, and make her well. But He saw best to take her home when her great furnace of affliction was done. She remarked, that she had asked God to take her through the testing fire, that she might know that she had the martyr’s grace, and could burn at the stake for Christ. This assurance she reached, and praised God for victory over death, hell and the grave. She was just as willing to go out of this world, as to take a pleasant journey to meet loved friends. But the dear faithful soul had such a fervent desire to work for Jesus, and the good of souls, that she longed to get well, so as to give her whole time unto the work of the Lord. This was her whole talk up to near the close of life. Her whole inspiration, and holy ambition in life, was to live and toil for the comfort and wellfare of others. Not a selfish thought had place in her mind. Her happiness lie in every possible self denial to make others happy. She was only too willing to labor, and in such a place as this OFFICE, where an industrious eye can always see work to be done, she was ever inclined to do more than her frail body could sustain She was not only willing, but also knowing, and skillful. God only knows how much you dear readers of the TRUMPET are indebted to the untiring labors of dear Sister Celia, and Rhoda, with whom we should also mention dear Bro. Spaulding.

But Celia is gone, the dear child, her ardent Spirit could no longer be caged in her poor body. O how near she seems to all our hearts, for her works sake, as wells for her sweet and loving disposition. How prophetic these words we find written in her journal some mouths ago, just before retiring. “Good night old world. I must go to dreamland; thou hast no charms for me.” Ah! she has bid adieu forever to this old world of pain and toil, and has gone to a sweet eiysian home, where she can gratify her holy ambition to work for her adorable Savior, without the weariness and suffering incident to these trail bodies in this life the strongest constitution could never have satisfied the burning desires of her soul, much less her fragile form. She has done what she could, and having work out the structure that God has given her to labor in here, He has clothed her with a new, immortal, mode of existence, to serve her Redeemer, we trust, in a far more extended and exalted capacity.

Funeral services were conducted by Bro. F. N. Jacobson, in Praise, Chapel, near which her poor house of clay was solemly committed to its resting place, until called forth in glow and honor at the coming of the Lord.

And is she gone? dear Celia gone?
Such news would tax credulity
Did not the Spirit’s previous tone,
Toll in our bosom mournfully,
The thought, “she’s left this mortal clime,
And we shall see her face no more.
Until we pass the hounds of time,”
And meet upon Celestial shore.

‘Twas in our heart to tune our lyre,
To sing thy cheerful wedding day;
But debts are made by fond desire,
More than our fleeting time can pay;
So now we sing our mournful lay,
Another epoch followed soon
To thy poor sold a brighter day
Than that, when blest beside thy groom.

The author of these feeling hearts,
Chides not affections flowing tears;
But with them soothing balm imparts.
And in His arms of love He bears
Poor nature’s heavy burden up:
So when bereavements press our lip,
Grace drops such sweetness in the cup,
That even then we comfort sip.

But is she gone, whose heart o’er burned
With such devoted fervent zeal?
Whose Spirit yearned to bless mankind
With full salvation’s holy zeal:
Who thought no sacrifice on earth too dear,
No painful toil and care too great
That all this world the truth might hear,
And gain redemption’s blissful state.

O sister, whi’e thy eyes beheld,
What e’er thy willing hands could do,
No needed rest thy footsteps held,
No moderation couldst thou know.
Regarding not thy slender frame —
To pious toil so passionate —
Till thy enfeebled limbs refrained
To execute thy heart’s mandate.

But hath God quenched that ardent thirst
To labor in the Lord’s employ?
Her active soul in Paradise,
With rest alone would seem to cloy.
Nay, formed to constant action here,
Which to our Father honor brings,
The soul will find sweet labor there,
And swifter still unfold her wings.

So we conclude our Sister’s heart
Where glowed such wondrous zeal and love,
Is not compelled with them to part
Since gone from earth to realms above;
But Jesus saw her faithfulness,
And, needing on His higher plain,
One tried and true in holiness.
Made choice to call dear Celia’s name.

And He who placed to her reward,
Much labor, freely given Him,
Saw lit, in kindness to award
Her soul with patient months of pain.
Tho’ oft the prayer of faith was poured
Around her wasted stricken form,
Relief was temp’ral; for the Lord
Would have her in His better home.

Now gone from us, but she’s not dead,
Despoiled, ’tis true, her house of day;
But when that sacred spot you tread,
Methinks you’ll hear an angel say,
“She is not here, to her was giv’n
A life that soars above, the tomb.”
The angels bore her safe to heaven,
Free from mortal pain and gloom.

When sickness had already cast
Its waning paleness on thy cheek,
God folded thee within the breast
Of love, connubial, warm and deep.
Thank Heav’n for this provision kind,
To bless, support and comfort thee.
On whose strong arm thy life declined,
Till from thy suffering body free.

God bless you, brother, now bereft
Of her so dear to you, and all.
To cheer thy heart this boon is left,
’Twas thine to give, at Heaven’s call,
A sacrifice so paramount.
Beloved on earth, and welcomed home.
To glory’s bright elysian mount,
By all the angels round the throne.

And gracious God, O bless we pray.
Dear Rhoda’s kind and weeping heart.
Who toiled with her in harmony,
How sad that these dear ones must part.
‘Twas meet, dear child, that you should be
With Celia to her peaceful end.
To bless her with thy sympathy.
And every comfort to extend.

These four years labor, hand in hand,
Knit thy two hearts forever one.
God give thee grace yet firm to stand,
Until thy labor too is done;
Then — O how sweet to contemplate
That morning when the trump shall sound,
When you shall in immortal state.
Embrace, and be together crowned.

These thoughts, suggested by her life,
We give to workers in her stead,
Be diligent, lest labors rife
Accumulating, grieve the dead;
But let us also profit by
The dear one’s over-reaching toil:
These holy temples, born to die,
O crush not premature with moil.

Let all this Office sacred be
To Him who called our loved on high.
Each spot recalls her memory.
Each object here that greets the eye.
By Celia’s hands is sanctified.
Who handled them in Jesus name:
And now with holy angels glorified,
Loves vet the truth these type proclaim.

Ah! now invert the column rules,
And dress the TRUMPET sad with crape,
That all who read, may know it feels,
And weeps the loss of friend so great.
Her artful fingers shall no more
Set up its many vocal peers,
Nor shall her anxious heart yet pour
Upon its sheets her moist’ning tears.

Her gentle voice so fine and sweet,
The Trumpet organ’s highest key,
Is singing now at Jesus’ feet,
With Heaven’s joyful minstrelsy.
O could we near the pearly gate,
And listen to her ransom song,
Our souls would more felicitate,
The bliss of that immortal one.

Bro. John Johnson of Lee Township, Allegan Co., Mich., in the 34th year of his age went home to dwell with Christ. Thursday morning, the 27th of Dec. 1888.

Bro. Johnson was converted a little over three years ago, and afterwards presented himself for perfected holiness; he was also healed of a long standing disease. He lived a conscien ions Christian until the Lord called him from earth and friends. His funeral was held in the log tabernacle, the same house in which he

had lived for many years; the same tabernacle in which his father, mother, some of his sisters, and many of his relatives and neighbors were saved. O we do praise God for the many refreshing Holy Ghost seasons enjoyed in that house. While our hearts were made sad because of the occasion that brought us together at this time, we rejoiced in the belief that our dear brother is at rest, and all is well. His last testimony just before passing away was that he was saved. Oh! praise God that the sting of death was removed before the dying hour. He leaves a loving wile, three small children, father, mother, sisters, and many other relatives to mourn their loss. May the Lord ever bless and keep them above their trial. The Lord God is a sun and shield; He will give grace and glory, and no good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly.

A. B. Palmer.

Dear loved ones, all is well;
My work on earth is done;
I part from you, with Christ to dwell,
And wait for you to come.

Cho: — Yes, yes, yes, dear ones,
I now am with my Lord;
He’s calling, calling you to come;
Will you obey His Word?

Dear father, all is well;
My soul has gone to rest;
With Jesus I shall ever dwell,
For I have stood the test.

Dear mother, all is well;
You soon will be with me,
Where all the holy angels dwell,
Through all eternity.

Dear sisters, all is well:
I see Christ’s smiling face,
For He hath drawn apart the vail,
And now I am at rest.

Kind friends, and neighbors all,
In glory birght and fair,
If you’ll but strive to heed God’s call.
You’ll surely meet me there.

Poor sinner all is well;
O give your life to God;
Your sins are sinking yon to hell;
O come now to the Lord.

A. B. Palmer.

P.S. This song is dedicated to wife, father, mother, sisters, friends and sinners. Entitled. “ALL IS WELL.”

On 27th of November, 1888, it pleased the dear Lord to call unto Himself, little Hebert, youngest son of Brother Eugene and Sister Jessie Reaves, near LaFayette Gratiot Co., Mich., aged 8 months. The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away; blessed be the name of the Lord. “And they brought unto Him infants that He would touch them, but when His disciples saw it they rebuked them; but Jesus called them unto Him and said: Suffer little children to come unto me. and forbid them not for of such is the Kingdom of God.” May God bless the bereft family. Little Herbert’s stay was short and sweet, yet we laid Him low at Jesus’ feet, calmly, with a submissive spirit breathing a prayer: “Thy will, not mine, he done.” Funeral services were held at the saints’ meeting-house in LaFayette.

A. J. Shelly.

Like early morning dew drops,
Like newly budded flowers;
So buds these little jewels,
Just to bloom in Eden’s bowers.

Herbie, we have loved you,
How much we hardly knew,
Till we saw your empty cradle.
But Jesus loves you too.

Fold up his little dresses,
And lay them all away;
These are but earthly treasures,
They soon will fade away.

While Herbie dear in heaven,
In robes of spotless white.
He’s a jewel bright and shining,
To glitter in the light.

Herbie, we shall meet you,
When the pearly gates unfold;
And then we’ll never leave you,
But will walk the streets of gold.

In St. Catharine, Canada, on the 27th of November 1888, Sister Lily Georganna, daughter of Augustus and Eliza Brady, departed this life to be with her Savior. Sister Lily was not yet fourteen years old, but she was sweetly saved in Jesus over a year ago, and before they moved to town she used to bravely and joyfully testify to her salvation in the Church. In the city her surroundings were less favorable, but in her sickness, which was measles, she seemed to have a clear knowledge of her acceptance with God. She told her fiends that she was prepared to die, and would rather go home to Jesus that to get well. Her funeral services were held by the writer in a Presbyterian meeting-house a few miles from Fenwick Out.

—:o:—

Wm. Edson, son of George A. and Hannah E. Brady was plucked from earth as a sweet bud by the gentle hand of the Lord. Dec. 7, 1888. Aged 2 years and 10 months. He was the only son of his parents, and a cousin to Lily; and the two families resided in the same building. His sickness was also measles. Services by the writer at the same place.

Thus the Lord saw fit to take two lambs from the same fold on earth, in such a short time. The Lord bless and comfort the bereaved parents and friend. Chide not the hand that took them to His Heavenly fold.

O let them go to the Savior’s arms,
And let thy bosom confide
In Him who calleth thy little ones,
Close to His sheltering side.
He never inflicts a willing pain,
Within a sorrowing breast;
But to our highest eternal gain
His rod in wisdom is blest.

O let them go. When the angels came
To bear sweet Lily above,
They saw dear Willie, and bore his name
Up to the mansions above.
Then Heaven was pleased and wish’d him
Lest time his innocence sting, [there
And lest the terrene his beauty mar,
Sent back the angels for him.

O let them go, for the earth is dark,
And dangers thickly impended.
Where pleasures charm may the serpent
’Tis well life’s evils are stemmed; [lurk
For sin doth spread like a mighty flood
O’er all our slumbering race.
Thank God! they’re gone to a safe abode.
A sweet and Heavenly peace.

O let them go, for pity hath seen
Some cruel tempest ahead,
Some blast of woe, or most bitter stream
To which their journey had led.
God took them in compassion from time
As lambs unspotted, ungrimed.
O couldst thou but know His fond design
Thy heart were more than resigned.

Yes, let them go to the better land,
No grief can follow them there,
We know, O Jesus! Thy loving hand,
Took them to Heavenly care.
Their voice is hushed, and their gentle tread
No more their presence we see:
Yet weep we not over them as dead,
Who live more happy than we.

All! let them go, tho’ we miss them here
Dear Father, bestow Thy grace.
Our eyes, though dimmed by affection’s
Would see Thy comforting face; [tear
In all Thy providence love confess,
And seek to honor Thee more,
That we may follow, and meet in bliss,
Our loved ones worthy before.

O let them go from the house of clay,
Sweet, uncaged spirit, go home,
Nor let thy thought yet in anguish stay.
Around their mouldering tomb.
Lift up thy faith from affliction’s vail,
And by her vision behold,
Thy darling ones over death prevail,
In bright ethereal fold.

O let them go: in this mortal clime
We cannot ever remain:
Life lingers not in the bounds of time,
But seeks eternity’s plain.
And death is but a shadow between
All pilgrims holy and pure,
And their sweet hope’s enrapturous scene
Beyond time’s beautiful shore,

THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD.

—:o:—

THE commandments of the Lord are pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. — Psa. 19:8-10. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments: and His commandments are not grievous. — 15:3. God never was so unkind and unjust as to command His children to do a thing that they could not do, or that would be burdensome. He did not intend to make His people unhappy or their life disagreeable by giving them commandments which were useless in their nature and character. It was for the highest good of His people that the least commandments were given: and we are told by one beloved disciple of our Lord that His commandments are not grievous; and by another that they are pure, enlightening the eyes. If they are pure, why throw any of them aside? If they are not grievous, why make any of them nonessential without positive permission from Him who gave them. Surely our Savior knew what was for our good when He said: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. — Matt. 28:20. If we make one of them a nonessential, why not make them all nonessentials? If one is binding, why not all binding? When Jesus was asked which was the great commandment in the law, He answered: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. — Matt. 23:37. There is not a person who makes any pretention to religion at all but what acknowledges that this commandment is of the most important nature; that it is the duty of all to love God supremely. Yet how few of the many who profess to love God, really love Him. Jesus says, He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him and will manifest myself unto him. — John 14:21. Glory to God forever! then how can a man love God when he is discarding some of His commandments snd calling them nonessential? Our Savior tells us that “If a man love, me he will keep my words.” — John 14:23. Then if a man does not keep His words, it is evident that he does not love Him. Ho that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings. — John 11:24. Another commandment the Lord has given is to be holy. Be ye holy, for I am holy — 1 Pet. 1:15. This is just as much of a command and just as binding as to love God with all our heart and soul. God does not love sin in the least degree; but hates all things that are impure and unholy: and demands of His people a complete separation from sin that they may be “a royal priest-hood, a holy nation, a peculiar people — 1 Pet. 2:9. They can not be holy if they have sin about them. For he that committeth sin is of the devil — 1 John 3:8. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of devils. Ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table and of the table of devils — 1 Cor. 10:21; and without holiness we can not see God. It is evident that we are either serving God or the devil; we are either holy or unholy; and God is not pleased with any except those who are pure in heart. There are a great many professed Christians who make this command a non- essential by teaching that we can not be holy; that it is impossible to be free from sin. Hallelujah! I obey the commandments, claim the promises by faith, and am made holy through the blood. Glory to God in the highest!

Many endeavor to spiritualize water baptism, and make it a nonessential to their own souls hurt. When Jesus commissioned His disciples to preach, He said: Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost — Matt. 28:19. It is evident that Jesus commanded baptism to he performed. It is also a fact that man cannot baptize with the Holy Ghost, neither did Jesus give any authority for man to baptize with the Holy Ghost; but in the name of the Holy Ghost. If we were to baptize with the Holy Ghost, it would be necessary to baptize with the Father and with the Son also; for it would not he a complete baptism unless we did: the Trinity would not be represented and God would he dishonored; and we are fully aware that we can not baptize with the Father and with the Son, nor can we baptize with the Holy Ghost any more than we can with the Father and with the Son. Then the only conclusion we can come to is to take the Word just as Jesus gave it to us, and baptize in the name of the Holy Ghost. We can not find any where in the blessed Word that Jesus ever revoked this command. Then what right has a man to revoke it, or set it aside. We have the promise from the lips of our blessed Savior, that, He that betieveth and is baptized shall be saved. — Mark 16:16. The disciples preached and practised it and strictly enjoins it upon all believers. May the Lord help us to take His blessed Word just as He has given it unto us. Other commands are spiritualized by shirky professors of religion. The Lord’s supper, the washing of feet, and the holy kiss, is not only placed in the nonessential casket, but is sneered at even by some Professed holiness people; and they endeavor to teach when they need to he taught, and their teaching is not according to the Word of God, but according to the tradition of men, and from false reasoning invented by the devil. Our Savior instituted the supper, and with it left this commandment: “This do in rememberance of me.” Luke 22:19, 20. Also after He had washed the disciples feet, He said: If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you — John 13:14, 15. Jesus makes this binding upon His disciples. “Ought” expresses a duty, “should” an obligation. And hence we have just as positive a command as either baptism or the supper; and our Lord evidently intended that we should observe one as well as the other: and how dare man set himself above our Lord, “sitting in the temple of God, showing that he is God;” (2 Thess. 2:4) in setting aside the blessed commandments that God has given us to observe. Jesus says, “Verily, verily I say unto you, that the servant is not greater than his Lord.” If the servant is not greater than his Lord, what right has the servant to esteem himself greater or wise by throwing the Lord’s commandments away, by making them null and void.

The holy kiss is not the least of the commandments; it is one in which there is a great blessing for those who obey in Spirit and in truth. When closing his letter to the Romans, Paul made this commandment very emphatic: “Salute one another with a holy kiss.” And in three other different places, 1 Cor. 16:20; 2 Cor. 13:12; 1 Thess. 5:26, the apostle gives the same teaching. Now the question arises: Did the Apostle write nonsense or sound doctrine? If He, as a man of God, should set forth doctrine that is unsound, how could he say that all Scripture is given by inspiration and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in right eousness? 2 Tim. 3:15. It is unreasonable to suppose that God ever inspired any of His servants to write unsound doctrine. Yet these would-be teachers of righteousness who tell us in plain words that the greeting with the holy kiss was not intended to he practiced, or that it has passed away with the customs and fashions of time or spiritualize it to spiritual greeting. Thus making God’s Word of none effect, and giving God the lie. John says, If we keep His commandments, God dwells in us and we in Him; then if we do not keep them, it is evident that He does not dwell in us. May the Lord help us to get down upon His Word, and be careful that we do not wrest the Scriptures; for a curse is promised upon those who take away from the Word or add thereto. Hallelujah! Praise God forever! I have use for the whole Bible. The Lord will not let me throw any of it away. Your free brother saved and sanctified.

Dear Saints: — While the outward man perishes the inward man is renewed day by day. Praise the Lord! Though the devil is mustering his forces, I am kept by the power of the Holy Ghost and enjoy the presence of God every moment. “I’m redeemed from all sin, and I’m walking in the light.” The Lord is manifesting His healing power in this place, and hundreds have been made whole. Some of the worst cases of cancer have been healed by faith in the Son of God. Many are still writing and coming to be healed. Praise the Lord!

We have been at home about three mo., but will go out and hold meetings wherever the Lord calls. Expect to stay in Ind. this winter. Praise God for salvation!

OPENING THE WINDOWS OF HEAVEN.

_____

MANY people wonder why the rich blessing of Heaven are withheld from them, and seemingly the windows of Heaven closed against them so they fail to receive the abundant showers of blessings due them. There surely must be some cause for this withholding, for the Lord says, He “will give grace and glory: and no good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly.” Perhaps by carefully reading the Word of the Lord we can find out where the trouble lies. May be some one is robbing God either unknowingly or purposely. In the third chapter of Malachi, the Lord says: “Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.”

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of Heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall he a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts. — Malachi 3:10-12.

This plainly shows where the trouble lies. People are trying to lay up treasures on earth instead of in Heaven, and neglect helping to promote the great work of salvation by spreading the Gospel truth throughout the land. People seem to forget that “the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof,” and that when they give anything for the promotion of His cause, it is only rendering unto Him that which is His own. The tithes spoken of, was a tenth part of the increase, or income given for the work of the Lord. If people of today were to make it a rule to give at least a tenth of their income, the Lord would wonderfully enrich them and increase the fruit of the land, besides sending showers of spiritual blessings. “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. But this say: He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.” — 2 Cor. 9:6, 7.

God has given the command for us to go and teach all nations. And while some have not the gift of teaching, or going forth as a minister of the Gospel, yet the Lord has blessed them with a faculty of making money through some honorable occupation in order that they may provide the means to send men filled with the Holy Ghost, or in some way aid in publishing salvation, that perishing souls may be rescued from the burning pit. Some say they are to poor to give anything for the Lord. Well, “as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” But there is a withholding that tendeth to poverty; not only does it lead to temporal, but also spiritual poverty; the soul becomes lean and impoverished. But “the liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.”

Many say that God has saved them from the vanity and pride of this world, or from the use of whiskey, tobacco, tea and coffee, etc.; for which things they always procured money in some way, for their own gratification. Yet, how many such persons do not have a cent to give for the work of the Lord. What use do you make of the money saved from this unnecessary expense? Now, would it not be well to render unto God the things that are God’s? A short time ago a poor sister sent us three cents in postage stamps, stating that it was all she had, and requested us to use it to the glory of God in helping to send out the Gospel truth. It was only a widow’s mite, but it helped to spread the truth, and throw a piercing ray of light into some poor darkened heart. Oh, that people would have more zeal for the cause of Christ, and aid more in rescuing souls from everlasting destruction. But the question comes: Where shall I give? We answer: wherever the Lord directs; take it to Him in prayer; look around and see if there are any poor, or sick, who need help. “Whoso hath this world’s goods, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?” Then, there are calls in every direction for holy men to preach the Gospel, and they must not only be sent of God, but provided with means, so they will not be a burden upon the people in new fields of labor. Holiness papers; tracts, etc., must be sent out more abundantly, then who will commence at the beginning of this year, and take the Lord at His offer by proving Him, and see if He will not “open you the windows of Heaven and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”

PRAYER.

—:o:—

HOW much time, brother, do you give to prayer? The question is not how much time do you pass upon your knees, nor how much time do you spend in saying prayer, but how much time do you give to thinking of God, to communing with God, to praising God, to pleading with God; five minutes, ten minutes, twenty minutes, out of twenty-four hours that make up the day? It might be well to place your watch beside you when alone with God, and learn what your habit is concerning real spiritual prayer. Think of the sinless Savior who ascended from Calvary to the right hand of the Majesty on high and “ever liveth to make intercession” for us, was once a man on earth. It is said of him on a certain occasion, rising up a great while before day, He went out and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed: (Mark 1:35.) On another occasion we are told that He went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God: (Luke 6:12.) Have you even once risen up a great while before day and prayed in a solitary place? Have you even once continued, all night in prayer to God? Look where you will, either through the Bible or through the history of the Church, the man of prayer is the man of power. It is not intellect that is wanted, nor culture, nor social position, nor money to make a christian an efficient witness and worker for the Master, but prayer, importunate prayer: one of whom the risen Jesus can say, as He said of Saul, of Tarsus: Behold he prayeth: Acts 9:11. Such a one is receiving the best preparation that is possible to obtain for the service of the Lord. Has He not taught us that men ought always to pray and not to faint? (Luke 21:36.) Continuing instant in prayer (Rom. 12:12.) Praying always with all prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your request he made known unto God (Phil. 4:6.) Continuing in prayer and watch in the same with thanksgiving (Col. 4:2.) Pray without ceasing (1 Thess. 5 17. He who prays most is not only the strongest, but is the most calm, contented and peaceful amid the trials and sorrows of life, because he instantly sees the hand of God in each event of life, and walks in such closeness of fellowship with Him, that no long and painful journey must be taken to be sheltered in a Father’s bosom, soothed with a Savior’s sympathy, and by an abiding Holy Spirit, First, we must pray in faith: all things whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive (Matt. 21:22.) Let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. Second, we must desire the things we seek, therefore I say unto you: what things soever ye desire when ye pray, believe that ye receive them. I say unto you, ask and it shall be given you: seek, and ye shall find: knock, and it shall be opened unto you. — Luke 11:9.

Elias prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and it did not rain for three years and six months (Jas. 5: 47.)

Third, we must pray in Jesus’ name, knowing our oneness with Him. Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask anything in my name I will do it. — John 14:13, 14.

Fourth, we must pray in the Spirit. God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your heart, crying, Abba, Father — Gal. 4:6. Praying in the Holy Ghost.

Fifth, we must pray as obedient children: whatsoever we ask we receive of Him because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight; and this is His commandment, that we should believe on the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another as He gave us commandment. — John 3:22, 23.

Sixth, we must ask for that which is according to His will. This is the confidence that we have in Him that if we ask any thing according to His will He heareth us. — 1 John 5:14. And if you would be happy, pray. If you would he humble, pray. If you would be holy, pray. So I say unto you, watch and pray.

BE YE PERFECT.

_____

I write this for the glory of God and for the salvation of souls. I feel very sad to think of the vast multitudes of good, honest, well-meaning souls, who are seemingly willing to reject holiness, without which no man can see the Lord in peace. I am more and more impressed every day with the fact that these are the perilous times spoken of in 2 Tim. 3:1—5. Sectarian darkness is the curse of the day. It seems to me a person with one ray of light in their soul could not mistake the correctness of this assertion, In all the land it is spread far and wide. Oh that souls would look to Jesus to save them, instead of sectism. How sad it is that people will trifle with opinions, and reject God’s Word to the destruction of their souls. And more especially those who profess to be christians and do not know what God’s Word teaches. Heb. 12:14. Also Paul says in 1 Thess. 3:13 that God wants to establish our hearts unblamable in holiness; and in Luke 1:73-75; 1 Cor. 1:2, and many other Scriptures upon this point, making the way so plain one would think that surely no one can reject the Word. To be more plain, many expect to get to Heaven who can not bear the thought of holiness; some expect to get it at death or after; but the Word tells us we should live in righteousness and holiness all the days of our life. Praise God for it! Hallelujah!

Now Beloved Brethren, let us see who is to blame as much as a sectarian minister. “Like priest, like people.” John Wesley was especially severe upon unfaithful preachers. Of one entering the ministry he wrote: “What is the end he proposes to himself. If his eye be single, his one design is to save his own soul and them that hear him: to bring as many sinners as he possibly can out of darkness, into marvelous light. If on the other hand his eye be not single, if he aim at ease, honor, money or preferment, the world may account him a wise man; but God says unto him, Thou fool.” Is n’t this getting the truth in a nut shell? A worldly clergyman is a fool above all fools.

Brethren, let us take courage, for now is the day of salvation. Pray for me that I may rebuke the devil where ever I go. I expect to start South on the 22 of Dec. with the banner of holiness unfurled. I expect to go into Kentucky, West Tennessee, mississippi and Alabama to see what I can do on the true holiness line. I feel especially desirous to have the prayers of the TRUMPET FAMILY that I may be used to the glory of God. Hallelujah!

Dow, Pa.

To the Gospel Trumpet, and Dear Saints in Christ, greeting: — I am always glad when I receive the Trumpet, for its joyful news it brings to me. I still stand in the German Eldership of the Church of God. But we will not follow some things that the denomination practices. We takedown no names, nor have any class-book at all. I preach justification by faith, and believe that in it God forgives all our transgressions. But the inbred sin still remains within, and no one can, in that condition, serve the Lord fully, or live as we ought to live. In this state we have ups and downs, and are troubled with an evil nature. I lived 17 yrs. in this state; But I have found out, and preached to the people to be sanctified wholly thro’ the blood of Christ, and by the Holy Spirit.

It is 15 years since I have experienced this full salvation, and since, I am preaching the gospel. I have preached 6 yrs, here on one field. Some have come to the blessed experirnce of entire sanctification, and others have fought against it; and all our preachers are against it. I am the only one that preach it. Some of our preachers will not come to meeting any more because I preach holiness and faith cure. All the sects around fight against me. They say a preacher has no right to touch on tobacco, lodges, feathers; bustles, sect frolics, and sect preachers who cannot preach unless their sermons are written off. God never sent such men to preach. When He sends men He gives them a message to the people, and they will know it. When I first started out to preach, I was not in any sect; but this so- called Church, made the proposition that I should preach with them. They thought they could soon cure me of my doctrine of holiness, and then I would be a useful man. But the more they would oppose me, the more earnestly did I contend for the faith once delivered to the saints.

And when they found they could do nothing, they stayed away and fought behind my back. They made the people believe that if I would keep on preaching holiness, and against tobacco, the church of God would fall. I told them, if the church of god was founded on tobacco, preacher’s license, and secret orders they better let it fall, for it was only babylon, and babylon would fall any way. A good many young men and women have been converted and sanctified since I came here. I ask all the dear Saints to pray for me. I have a bony tumor on my breast, and it hinders me in the work. I believe God would be glorified in healing me.

Your Saved Bro.
