Poor yet Very Rich.

‘Tis only an outcast, full of anguish and grief,
Tossed about on life’s billows without hope of relief
Weary, worn, and forsaken, in poverty bowed,
Jostled, scoffed at, and spurned by the merciless crowd.

Only two sunbrown hands that through long weary years,
Have toiled for the rich through oppression and tears,
Until the eyes have grown dim, and the steps slow and weary,
Still resound through life’s pathway so lone and so dreary.

From the quivering lips comes a heart-broken wail from the soul,
And the outcast falls just in sight of the goal.
While in mansions, the rich, ’neath the sunbeams are sleeping,
The Shepherd, goes forth seeking lost sheep with weeping.

Far out on life’s highways, ‘neath the pale shining stars,
Jesus grasps the brown hands covered o’er with toil’s scars.
He has heard the lone cry, and the lost one is found
Groveling low in despair, with his face to the ground.

While the Savior’s sweet face, in love and pity keeps glowing;
O’er the poor outcast’s soul His pure life-blood keeps flowing,
Till in rapture the feeble heart throbs with salvation,
And new life ripples forth with each glorious pulsation.

‘Neath the thin tattered mantle, a rare jewel is hid,
Which cannot be covered by the dark coffin-lid;
For a soul that’s redeemed, it will shine on forever,
Though this earth pass away, from its God it can’t sever.

“Tis no sin to be poor. If you are loyal and true,
There is plenty of work for all hands here to do.
“The harvest is ripe.” See the golden sheaves bending
While the prayers of the saints to God’s throne are ascending

Coffers, gained by oppression are cankered and cursed
Seek the riches of God and His righteousness first,
That your heart may be holy as Bethlehem’s star,
Which guided the wise men to Christ from afar.

For there’s nothing more pure than a soul that’s redeemed,
O’er whose innermost depths Christ’s own life-blood nath streamed,
Flow on Holy River, yea flow on forever
Though crimson thy tide it whitens forever.

Velvet and rags cover souls that are equally dear,
When the hand of our Savior removes sin’s dark sear.
For the hearts of the poor, though they be meek and lowly,
Are Christ-like, and gems for His crown pure and holy.

Oh God! We are thine, though the cold world may peer,
We will clamor along without doubting or fear.
Though our hands may be brown by hard toils ’neath the sun,
We will clamor alone, till life’s vitctory is won.

INBRED SIN.

_____

For I delight in the law of God after the inward man, but I see another law in my members warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me unto captivity to the law of sin which is in my members — Rom. 7:22, 23. Lest there be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood. Deut. 29:18.

INBRED SIN, although not a scriptural phrase is a term that designates the indwelling evil that exists in the heart, and from which all evil deeds spring which are so frequently manifested in the lives of many believers. The term is an abreviation of inbreed or inborn, and expresses or distinguishes clearly the inherent corruption so prevalent in the posterity of Adam. This evil is as a root, planted in the soil, which sooner or later will send forth sprouts which tell plainly of the existence of the root. When we see the manifestation of sinful tempers and dispositions, we may partly conclude that there is a root from which they have sprung, for they will not exist without a cause. A cause invariably produces an effect, and not the effect the cause. Hence there must be a cause in order that an effect may be produced. If then we see an effect we simply see what has been produced by a cause. If we see malice, envy, jealousies, hatred, backbiting, bitterness, wrath, strifes, seditions, heresies, etc., we see what has been produced by a cause; viz., INBRED SIN OR INWARD CORRUPTION. INBRED SIN is not actual transgressions, but actual transgressions are the outcroppings of inbred sin.

Various phrases are found in the scriptures defining this germ of all kinds of sins. It is called the “old man,” the “old leaven,” “the carnal mind,” “the body of sin,” “the law of sin,” but they all designate the single root of depravity, which brings so many dear souls into captivity that were once set free, and that worshipped the Lord in the Spirit Actual transgressions are our own voluntary acts for which we are responsible, and consist in disobedience to God’s divine law, whether the sins or the transgressions be in words, thoughts or deeds. The law demands obedience, and a violation of that law is sin, hence as the inspired writer says, The transgression of the law is sin. 1 Jno. 3:4. Here transgressions are made voluntary acts, and as we are free moral agents we become responsible for any acts of disobedience that we may perform. These sins are only remitted or forgiven through the blood of Jesus.

INBRED SIN is not a sin which we have committed or in anywise come into possession of except by inheritance. Therefore it cannot be forgiven, but must be purged or cast out by the Holy Ghost. If it cannot then be forgiven but must be cast out as indicated in John 15:2, it is a principle separate from our actual sins, and one for which the guilty soul does not plead for pardon.

If this sin were removed in regeneration, then there would be no need of further surging as Jesus certainly teaches in that passage of scripture, for He, says, “Every branch in me that beareth not fruit He taketh away, and every branch that beareth fruit He purgeth it that it may bring forth more fruit.” First, we see that the branches are live branches, and if they become dead or cease to bear fruit then they are taken away, and no longer belong to the vine. Therefore to remain in the vine the branch must bear fruit. A justified soul to retain his experience must continue to bear fruit, and we see that the fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, longsuffering, etc. Gal. 5:22, 23. These are the fruits that a regenerate soul invariably bears. Second, we find that the branches that bear fruit are purged that they may bring forth more fruit. As these branches are evidently regenerate souls, the question arises, From what were they purged? It would not be consistent with the Word of God to teach that their sins were not all forgiven, that there remained yet some transgression that the Lord did not see fit to remit, and therefore they must have a second regeneration in order to bear more fruit. Surely none will be so foolish as to claim any such absurdity as this. He that hath sins unforgiven is yet a sinner. Then the only conclusion at which we can arrive is that the Savior, desired to teach the existence of the carnal mind or inbred sin in regenerate souls, and as it is a hindrance to perfect love, complete joy and peace it is necessary to purge out the old leaven, to cast out the body of sin, that there may be nothing to spring forth to mar the fruit bearing in abundance.

The Apostle Paul sets forth the teaching of inbred sin in believers in his epistle to the brethren at Rome. Read Rom. 7. In his chapter he gives first the infant state without sins or transgressions, but with the carnal nature remaining in it. Ver. 7-9. Second, He arrives to the years of accountability and becomes a sinner, ver. 10- 14. Third. Now comes another experience, and that is when he becomes a regenerated soul and delights in the law of God. Vers 20-23. A sinner does not delight in the law of God, but a converted soul does, but while there is a delighting, and rejoicing in the divine Word, there is found another law still in existence, and that law is striving to bring the regenerated soul into captivity again to that from which he had been set free by the Son. With the unsaved this law or old man predominates supremely, and the fruits of unrighteousness are found in abundance. There is a complete following of the course of this world. With them there is not the striving to overcome and subjugate this inbred evil that we see in a regenerate soul before its entire extirpation. Now if the old man had been cast out in regeneration, why did the Apostle attempt to show conclusively that it still remained in the heart? “Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” (margin, “This body of death.”) Here he speaks of this body as a unit or a whole, and not as transgressions or many sins. In chap. 8:1, he shows that the regenerate souls of whom he was speaking were free from condemnation, for they waited not after the flesh but after the Spirit The flesh is the law of sin warring against the spirit, striving to gain the victory and bring the soul into bondage.

Let us now examine the lives of the apostles, and see if there were not some things that savored of carnality. While Jesus and the disciples were on their way to Capernum, there arose a dispute among the disciples, who should be the greatest. Mark 9:33, 34. Here we find the very men that Jesus had chosen to His work, to preach the Gospel, to cast out devils, to heal the sick, and open the eyes of the blind, seeking the highest seat, the highest office, and it led to a real dispute among themselves. From whence did this dispute arise? Surely not from hearts that were made perfect in love, and from which the root of depravity had been taken. Does disputing arise from divine love? Does worldly, impulsive ambition, love for and seeking of honor arise from hearts from which sinful tendencies have been removed? We find these men guilty of this very thing, and according to the language of our Savior there can not be any question about their conversion, their names being written in heaven. Luke 10:20. What was the matter with James and John when they asked Jesus if they should command fire to come down and consume some Samaritans because they would not receive them, and which Jesus refused to do saying that He had not come to destroy men but to save them? Luke 9:51-55. We do not find John making any such request after the day of Pentecost, but on the contrary we do find him teaching that perfect love casteth out fear. If love had been perfected in John’s heart and the carnal nature cast out in regeneration, there would certainly have been nothing left to cause those uprisings and a desire for vengeance. Once more we find the evidence of the carnal nature in the disciples after the crucifixion of our Savior. The disciples were met on the first day of the week evidently for worship, and they had the doors closed for fear of the Jews. Here is manifested fear which surely arose from lack of perfect love, and the present existence of inbred sin. There are many other scriptural proofs of this root remaining in the heart after conversion, and it is not an unfrequent occurrence to see the manifestation of it in the lives of those just converted. And how often do we hear the confession of those who have straggled so long to overcome and bind the old man that his deeds might not spring forth, and at last have found that binding will not do but that there must be an entire extirpation, uprooting, and casting out of the old man, the root of all evil. If there are DOWN BEEP IN THE HEART the uprisings of resentment, retaliation, ill-will, love of honor, love of distinction, pride, impure wishes, murmuring, etc., although you may profess to be sanctified and to have received it in regeneration, yet if you feel these hidden in your heart, it is evident that you have yet this root of bitterness, the old man, inbred sin. Beloved you may have fightings without, but you need not have fears within. Let love be perfected, and fear will be cast out. Then God will have the supremacy, and sweet will be the rule of the Holy Ghost. Amen!

MORMONISM FROM THE PIT.

_____

Because God’s children accept and use the term saint with all other titles by which He has seen fit to designate His peculiar people, and because the abomination represented in our caption of this article, have insulted the majesty of heaven, by calling themselves Latter-day Saints, therefore some men who love to make or publish a lie, presumptuously take it upon themselves to call God’s redeemed saints Mormons. Such falsehood usually proceeds from corrupt sectarian hearts, and even from idolatrous preachers. O may God give all such repentance that they may recover themselves out of the snare of satan. We teach that God has but one church, which is the body of Christ. That Christ is the door, and salvation the means of induction. That after conversion men should go onto perfection, which is reached in entire sanctification. — Heb. 6:1; 10:14. And that entire sanctification makes God’s people one, — Heb. 2:11, with love the bond of perfection. That God keeps the class book of His church in Heaven, and that His people hear the voice of Christ and follow Him in all His commands and ordinances. Now if any one can make this out Mormonism he would prove Christ and the apostles Mormons. But this is too absurd to mention. One lover of a lie said we are a split-off from the Mormons. As for myself I never met a Mormon preacher in my life, and we do not know a preacher that reports his labors in the Trumpet that ever had any thing to do with that anti-christ instiution. Though we have never met a Mormon preacher, we know through Bro. Grover’s exposure of them some time ago, and through other means, what their creed is. Every branch of Mormonism holds the book of Mormon, the false Bible invented by Joseph Smith. They only teach and possess a form of religion, deny holiness, and are destitute of regeneration. They take in their members and keep their class book on earth, and they also have a plurality of wives, all of which is contrary to the Word of God, and to all the teaching of the Church of the living God. The following exposure of the dark conclave of Mormonism is corroborated by all who have seen and published the corrupt institution. It speaks for itself:

“New York, Oct. 6. — Miss Inez Coultre of Grove City, Pa., who has recently arrived from Salt Lake City, Utah, where she has peen doing missionary work, today submitted a statement to general James P. O’Berine, superintendent of immigration at the barge office, with a view of aiding those who are interested in stopping the immigration of Mormon converts to this country. In her statement Miss Coultre says that having been a resident of Salt Lake City for two years, and during that time Laving made a study of the Mormon people she desires to aid in suppressing the traffic now going on with ignorant, unsuspicious foreigners by the Mormons. The Mormon church, she says, pays for the passage to this country of the converts and then pays their railroad fare to Salt Lake City. The ignorant converts come to Salt Sake City filled with promises of a life of ease and luxury and with an idea that the church will aid in their support. Instead of this they are housed like animals in miserable little adobe huts. Upon the grinding labor of the converts the Mormon church flourishes. They have to pay one tenth of all they possess and one tenth of all they earn to support the church. Many of the Mormon settlements use sage brash for fuel, and have to subsist principally on fish, which they dry and keep for food in the winter.

“How they do manage is a mystery to all,” says Miss Coultre. Why the Mormon elders bring over so many ignorant young girls is only too well known to those of us who have cared to investigate the matter. These girls have no voice in the matter of their disposal, and they soon learn that they are to be spiritual wives to some of the basest creatures the church produces. Oh, how earnestly they wish they were again in their own land and away from the clutches of those Mormon tyrants. But there is very little hope for them after they are once in their clutches. Why not stop them in New York before they have become imbued with vice and are beyond our power to help?”

Miss Coultre says she could cite scores of cases that have come under her attention. In the case of one Scotch woman who was enticed to Salt Lake City by her own brother, the old woman, when she found out the practices of the Mormons, refused to have any thing to do with them. But her children were enticed from her and are now living lives of sin. In conclusion Miss Coultre says, “Knowing as I do so well from personal observation the fate of I hose Mormon converts, I do hope the American people may come to realize that it is their duty to consider this matter as one of vital importance to our government, and to try to have prohibitory measures in regard to bringing these people here. Not only would it benefit these people themselves, but the whole country, for surely people who take the oaths they are obliged to take would not become good law abiding citizens.”

QUESTIONS.

_____

Does the Word of God forbid the taking of legal or judicial oaths?

Answer. “Swear not at all.” — Jesus.

We want some Holy Ghost minister to answer this question: We have little children in our sabbath-school that do not know their letters. Is it wrong on the sabbath day to teach them their letters, and to read? Jesus said, “It is right to do good on the sabbath day,” and we think this would be doing good.

Your saved sisters,

Damaris Smith & S. M. McDonald.

Spring Hill, Miss,

Answer. In the North where there are schools eight and nine months in the year in every neighborhood, there would not be the same justifying cause for such instructions. But wherever children have not favorable opportunities for learning, surely it would be a good work to teach them to learn in the Sabbath-school. Besides, they can be taught precious Bible lessons.

__________

QUESTIONS.

__________

We take the Gospel Trumpet, and enjoy reading it very much. We are sending it to others, and some are coming to the light.

I would like to ask some questions.

1st. Rom. 13; Titus 3:1; 1 Peter 2:13, 14, teach us to be subject to the civil powers, for the Lord’s sake, for there is no power but of God, etc. But again, Rom. 12:19, 20 says, “Avenge not yourselves, * * * vengeance is mine, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him,” ect. Therefore would it be right for Christian men to be rulers in the laws of the land, and to punish criminals by hanging? Ought they to cast their votes for those who are not Christians?

2d. Were the kings of Israel types of the sect ministers of to-day?

3d. Is it right to give the title of Reverend to ministers?

4th. Are all men redeemed?

Ans. to 1st. The above Scriptures clearly teach that we are to support the laws of our land. If Christian men are not called to some other line of work that would be interfered with by the responsibilities of civil office, and they should be chosen by voice of the people, without their condescensions to any of the unrighteous means of election, there would in itself be nothing wrong in holding office. If, as we read in Rom. 13:4, the civil officer “is the minister of God to thee for good,” surely no one is so fit for the place as the child of God. And if the law was made for the lawless and unrighteous, then it should be executed by the righteous. Civil Government is a great blessing. But it is not congenial to the feelings of a Christian to see men put to death for their crimes.

The Old Testament law authorized captal punishment, but that is abolished, and the New Testament in spirit does not uphold it, and we believe the sentiments of holiness are directly against capital punishment. When Paul said, “ avenge not,” he simply meant that we should not return good for evil, nor seek to injure those who harm us by way of retaliation. Legal punishment is something very different. It is not seeking spite, but maintaining good society. We are well convinced that a far more effectual and happy system of penalties could be applied to bad members of society than that of hanging, if the government were in the hands of men endued with that wisdom that cometh down from above. — See Combe’s Constitution of Man.

Since men however, may possess the elements of justice and worldly honesty without divine grace, in such cases it is consistent to vote for them, if so lead of the Lord.

Ans. to 2d. Perhaps not exactly types, yet sustaining much resemblance.

Ans. to 3d. No. “Holy and Reverend is His name.” — Psa. 111:9. This only instance of the word ascribes reverence- worship — to God.

Ans. to 4th. To redeem means to “purchase back,” “to pay the penalty of.” In this sense all men are redeemed, just as Christ is the “Savior of all men.”

The word also means, “to rescue,” “to deliver from,” “to save.” Hence the saved child of God can say that he is redeemed in an actual and deeper sense than the. unsaved can.

REQUEST TO PRAYER.

Bushnell, Mo.

Dear Saints: — I am cast out here away from all the true saints of God. I feel let of the Lord to ask the prayers of all God’s people that I may be healed. The people here that claim to be holy, do not observe all the ordinances of God’s house. They have been here to see me but I do not feel they are the true saints of God. I know there is no other way but the holy way, but I am weak and not settled as I want to be. I know there is a deeper work of grace than I have ever received, and I want you all to pray that I may be healed in soul, body, mind and spirit. I do hope that some of the dear brethren who preach the true Gospel will stop and hold a series of meetings. I know there are souls here that would receive the truth.

Bro. Warner: — My object in writing is to ask you to pray for a dear aunt of mine — Rebecca Helm. She wants to be healed, and requests me to write you. Pray for her. She said she would pray too. She says she is prepared to die, but would be pleased to stay with her family if God wills. She is very low, but nothing is impossible with God. I have had good health most of the time since you prayed for me, and I still wish your prayers. Set time to pray for her, and I will inform her.

I feel quite sad that I am so limited and unable to help you. I have been sick since the 15th of last May, a little over a year now. It is lung trouble. I believe God can heal the sick. And the prayer of faith shall heal the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.” — James 5:14. Dear Christian friends, I ask you to pray for the healing of my throat and lungs. I see quite a number have been healed through your prayers, and I love to read their sweet testimonies for the dear Lord.

Please remember my dear wife who is also afflicted.

With love and prayers in your behalf that God may over-rule every thing for your good.

A brother writes his conclusion from the words of Christ: John 3, “— Except a man be bom of water and of the Spirit be cannot see the Kingdom of God” — applying the word water to baptism. But the Bible nowhere teaches that baptism is the new birth. But the term water frequently denotes the Word of God. See Eph. 5:26. And Peter says, “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God. which liveth and abideth forever.” — 1 Peter 1:23. Therefore the water used in the new birth is the Word of God, which agrees with facts in our experience and the whole teaching of the Divine Word.

Put the Lord’s equipments all into the battle, for the time is short. “The Lord hasten it in its season.” Amen.

Bro’s Otto Bolds, Hechler, Daugherty, and perhaps others, are expecting to pitch a tabernacle for the Lord in South Chicago soon, and publish salvation there.

ORGANIZATION.

A brother writes us from Freeman, Mo. stating that we have been reported as organizers of churches, after the California Holiness sect, and wishes us to correct the statement. We reply that we accept the organization taught in the New Testament, which is not the work of man, but of the Holy Spirit; not the formation of a sect, but the body of Christ.

Organize, means. First, “to furnish with organs.” This is God’s work. “He gave some apostles, and some prophets, and some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers.” — Eph. 4:11. “Take heed, therefore, unto yourselves and to all the flock over which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers.” — Bishops — Acts 20:28. Second, organize means, “to duty arrange the parts, so that all may co-operate with each other.” Who does this? “But now hath God set the members every one of them into the body as it hath pleased Him;” and “God hath tempered the body (the Church) together, having given more abundant honor to that part which lacked that there should be no schism in the body.” — 1 Cor. 12:18, 24, 25. When men organize, they divide the children of Got into sects. But God organizes His own Church, that there should be no schism in the body. This one body is Gods own Church, and in it we abide alone.

At the C. M., a season of earnest prayer was offered to God for the following parties, as per their request:

For the healing of sister Susan Kilgore, Ella Tyler, and the wife of Elmer E. Jocoy.

For the full salvation of Lucy Thayer. Another sister from whom we received a dispatch. And perhaps others. To all of whom we would love to write good letters, but time is short, and work in abundance. We always have time to pray earnestly to our God for all desiring, but we do not always have as much time as we would wish, to write to them.

Bro. Schroder writes: “O, how my soul is burdened to-day for the Swedish people, and has been ever since I arrived here in Templeton, Cal. How I do realize the necessity for the Lord to hasten the light to be spread. “quick as lightening.” Oh, how they are hungering for the pure Word of God! I have held five meetings. Three have consecrated for sanctification, and many are convicted. Some have come out of babylon, and are now free indeed. Bless the Lord! O dear brethren, pray that God may send the means, and open the way for the light to be spread to the Swedish people, through a paper in our language. Lord, if I am the one to be used in this line of work I am waiting for Thy bidding. I cannot shake this burden off.”

Amen!

Who will help to purchase Swedish type and put Bro. Schroder to work, if the Lord will?

Bro. G. T. Clayton writes us that the meeting in Canada will be a camp meeting. And we are looking to the Lord for a real harvest, as the work seems to be in a good condition here.” Amen!

A Book on Divine Healing.

For some time we have felt the Lord moving us to issue a work on DIVINE HEALING, containing chapters of instructions, showing the teaching of the Word of God on this subject, also giving a large number of testimonies and experiences of persons whom the Lord has healed; showing to the world the wonderful power of God to save the soul, and heal the body; and also giving an account of just what points of consecration of salvation had to be met before the work could be accomplished; and of the dealings of the Lord with each one before and after healing. We are convinced that there are thousands of persons lying helpless upon beds of affliction, who, if such a book would reach them, they would be enabled to exercise faith enough in God to arise and take up their beds and walk. Now you who have been so wonderfully healed of the Lord, and desire to glory God and aid others to obtain the blessing of health and salvation send in your experience. We would like to have all sent in within two months from now if possible. All such must be addressed to E. E. Byrum, Grand Junction, Mich. Have all manuscripts carefully prepared, and plainly written with ink. If a letter or business is sent, let it be on a separate sheet.

We wish to issue this work and send it forth only for the glory of God, and desire to send it out as near cost as possible, that it may reach thousands of afflicted persons. Let us hear from you soon, about what the Lord has done for you.

E. E. Byrum.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD

Cochran’s Mills, Pa., June 15, 1891.

To all the readers of the Trumpet, Greeting: — The Grove Meeting near Cochran’s Mills closed yesterday evening. It was a heavenly feast to our souls. We arrived here from our home in Ohio, June 3rd and was made to rejoice on meeting our dear Bro. and Sister Dillon, Sister Fink, and others of the saints from these and oilier parts of the country. Bro. and Sister Dillon and Sister Fink remained with us until June 10th when they took leave of us and started for Bangor C. M. The evening before they started we observed the ordinances of the New Testament and was blessed in so doing. Hallelujah! On the last day of the meeting, being the Lord’s day, we preached three times to a large concourse of eager listeners to the truth. Many acknowledged the truth and some were by the Spirit deeply convicted of sin, but none could be prevailed upon to give themselves unto the Lord, save a few who had been switched off the straight and narrow way by the adversary of souls. Nevertheless we believe that during this meeting much good seed has been sown in the hearts of the people, that will in due season bring forth good fruit.

We go from here to Blanco, where we will hold a series of meetings, the Lord willing. Pray much for us, all ye saints of the Most High God.

Your Bro. under the blood.

Carlisle, Mich.

Dear Beloved Saints and Readers of the Trumpet: — I spent some seventeen weeks out working for the Lord. I was in company with Bro’s Cross and Welch. We had a joyful meeting with the church near Auburn, Ind. and also in Auburn with the dear saints. I thank them, all for their love and kindness to me. After I left Auburn, I went in Co. with dear Bro. and Sister Hevel, to Summit, Ind., and we had a glorious good meeting there with the glorious power of God and victory in our souls. Sectarians raged, but in spite of all, God got hold of a number of Campbellites, and saved a few of them out of the terrible darkness. One sister confessed that all the change she had received in joining that sect was: she went into the water a dry sinner and came out a wet sinner.

The Lord also saved an old U. B. preacher from the filth of tobacco. When at his home he smoked, which drove me out of his house. So he got under conviction, was cleansed and saved, and he came out of babylon. Praise the Lord for his escape! He is 73 years old.

March 12th I called with Bro. Kinsey at Laotto. He is in the light and in the oneness.

Next day stopped at Rome City, and visited my son and family, and my daughter, who claimed to be converted. It was great joy to me.

I got home March 16th and found my son Freddie well, and glad for my return. O howl would love to meet the dear saints again in camp-meeting! But if I meet you no more on earth, may God preserve me to meet you all in Heaven. I belong to the Church of the living God, and have the love of God in my soul. Amen.

The Bangor Camp-Meeting.

This glorious feast has again past its annual round. O bless God! It has kindled the fire of divine love and started streams of praise in hundreds of hearts. All glory to God and the Lamb for his excellent power grace and glory! Many of the dear saints declared this the best camp-meeting they had ever attended. It was very glorious to all the beloved saints, and to such as had never attended a C. M. in the evening light. It was wonderful, wonderful. There were, we think, more new faces among the host of God than at any previous meeting. Ind., O., Ill., Mo., Col., Pa., and Connecticut were represented, and the Lord was the glory in the midst, bless His name! The meeting set in with cold rain the first, day, but the Lord moved prayer for good weather, which also was granted. O that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and for his wonderful works to the children of men! The order was excellent. Persons who had only attended Free Methodist, and other sect camp- meetings, remarked that they had never beheld such a meeting in their lives. With the exceptions of the unavoidable moving about of the several thousand attendants on the sabbath day, the order was scarcely interrupted by any misconduct. The glorious Gospel was preached both forenoon and afternoon in the pavilion, in the tabernacle and at other places. There were more souls saved on the Sabbath than we ever witnessed on that thronged day upon that ground. Though the crowd was perhaps as large as any year before, a number bowed at the altar, and found God in His salvation, in both forenoon and afternoon services. No meeting had been announced for the night, but this work of God went on until night, and was resumed later in a tent, where the work went on until eleven o’clock, and many were healed and some saved. The work of salvation ran deep and thorough. Many backsliders who had wandered from their Father’s house for some years, were joyfully restored. Many poor sinners, old and young, were saved, and a great many souls reached the perfect sanctifying grace of God. From 5 to 20 souls bowed and sought God for what they needed, at every invitation which was nearly three times a day. There, were no less than 200 souls in all who consecrated for pardon or sanctification during the meeting. Many who get saved at camp-meetings are absent from their homes and not prepared at the time to follow Christ in the ordinance of baptism. There were we believe, 16 who testified to their death to the world in this ordinance of Christ and came forth in the resurrection power and glory. On Monday evening about one hundred and fifty holy disciples of Christ obeyed our “commander and leader” in the ordinance of washing one another’s feet and the Lord’s supper. O bless God for such a wonderful privilege! It was solemn and sweet to do the will of Christ in these sacred things.

The childrens’ meetings were far behind what they should have been, for the want of a greater attendance. O, what a pity that all the dear saints in the surrounding country did not bring their little ones and stay right there, and let them have the benefit of these meetings! Let us say to you my brethren and sisters wherever camp and grove meetings will be held, bring out your children and get them saved in Jesus in their youth. Well, the parting came, and with many holy greetings and tears of love, the saints bade each other farewell. Many came and stopped a short time with us at the office. 35, we believe, lodged with ns the first night, then about every train bore away some, east, west, north and south, until nearly all have gone away, and yet all are forever together in the fellowship and love of God. Amen.

—†0†—

On Thursday, June 4th, Bro. and Sister Wm. N. Smith and Bro. J. W. Daugherty accompanied us to Muskegon, Mich., six miles from which place we met with a number of dear saints who had been called into the glorious faith of the Gospel of Christ last winter, through the labours of Bro. Crall and others. We held meetings there until over the Sabbath, being richly blest in preaching the pure Word of God to these hungry souls. On Saturday night eight presented themselves for sanctification. May the Lord help them to firmly grasp and ever hold fast the sanctifying grace of God.

On Lord’s day after a precious service at the school-house, we went to Black Lake, where Bro. Smith buried 17 dear children of God with Christ in baptism. O may they henceforth live the resurrected life of Christ! In the evening we met again, and after many joyful testimonies, we enjoyed the precious privilege of obeying two more sacred ordinances of Christ, — the washing of the saints’ feet, and the Lord’s supper. Between thirty and forty saints took part. O bless the Lord! It was good to be there. The melting presence of Jesus filled the room, and after the solemn services, five sinners came to the altar, and we trust were all justified from their transgressions. O praise our God! Sister Stowell preaches frequently for the saints here. She and family attended the meeting. She is equipped with power of God to do His will. Dear Bro. and Sister Crall were only permitted to be with us over Sabbath. The Lord bless the beloved saints in these parts, and reward their liberality to us. The prospects are good for the Lord to add to His Church in that place. Amen.

Lompoc, Cal., June 2, ’91.

To the Saints of the Most High: — May the richest of heaven’s blessings rest sweetly upon each of you. We closed meetings here on Sunday evening, May 31st. The tent was well filled with earnest listeners. The Lord was with us in mighty power throughout the meetings. Excellent order prevailed, and the precious Word sunk deep into the hearts of many, God confirming the same with signs following, so that it grew and multiplied greatly in this place. Hallelujah! There were 20 or more consecrations for either pardon or sanctification. Four were anointed for healing. The fogs of babylon have broken away, and the evening light now shines bright and clear in the splendor and glory of heaven to hearts of many. The captives of Zion are returning with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads. Babylon rages because her most spiritual, as they say, are leaving her habitations; but the saints are shouting their freedom. Have received eleven new subscription for the dear old Trumpet, and sold and given many tracts. Many non-professors are favorably impressed with tins clear teaching upon the Body of Christ, and some have shown us much kindness. May God bless them with salvation, which He certainly will if they but turn to Him. Last evening a few of us met in an upper room and enjoyed the obedience of our Saviour’s commands in the holy ordinances. Oh, how these dear saints were filled with glory in their first experience in these things! Thirteen took part, and others said they were ready for the next opportunity. This morning we start for Arroyo Grand, where we expect to hold one meeting, and then separate again for a short time. Bro. Schroder will go to Templeton and preach to the Scandinavians, and I shall, if the Lord permits, go 10 San Luis Obispo, from there to Port Harford, and take the ship for home. We expect to labor in Southern Cal. most of this summer. Bro. and Sister Clayton were with us but a short time here, on account of pressing matters at home. They expect to labor north if the way opens. Dear saints there is much to do in this distant land. If there are any who can come with divine commission, and like old Abraham, in obedience to the call of God, there is a great field for you. But if there are any, who have the disposition to run before they ale sent, they are not needed here, as this coast is cursed already with such. Who will leave ALL and come to the rescue? Who is willing to venture your lives to climb the steeps and cross the waves, until the islands of the sea, and ocean caves echo the mighty chorus of full salvation? May God help each to be ready to hear the voice as HE may direct you. Well we do rejoice in the keeping power of our God who is an all-sufficient support in our trials. Pray, dear saints for the work here, that it may spread with the rapidity of the lightning, and Jerusalem become a praise in this portion of the earth. Your humble brethren, sacrificed upon the Gospel Altar.

Belknap, Mich., June 4th, 1891.

Dear Beloved Saints: — Our last meeting at Jamestown was a good one. The Lord was with us. Bro’s Cole and Daugherty were with us in the meeting. Much precious truth was preached and was received joyfully by the saved, and we believe the church was much benefited.

From there we were called to Portland, where we met with Bro. and Sister Todd. Had a joyful greeting. On next morning it being the Lord’s day, we met the dear saints at North Eagle. The Lord was with us in much power. Had a precious meeting for one day and three nights. The dear ones were much rejoiced in the Word.

On Wednesday, five souls were buried with Christ by baptism, thus testifying to their death to the world, and to their new life in Christ Jesus. Two of them got saved from the old Mothor of Harlots while Sister Fisher was at Eagle. They do appreciate wonderfully, their freedom in Christ The baptism was a glorious scene. The glory of God witnessing with the spirit to their obedience. From there we returned to Belknap and greatly enjoyed the grove-meeting. Our testimony is: We are saved and sweetly kept by the power of God.

Your bro. and sister.

Hayden, Ind., May 28, 1891.

Dear Brethren: — We greet you all in the name of our Master, and to you all may grace and peace be multiplied, and you be kept from the evil of this world, filled with all the fullness of God. Amen. We are saved to the utmost and well also in body, for which we are praising the dear Lord.

We took our leave of the dear saints of the Living God at Payne, O. (which place has been our home for the past 3 years), and went in company with Bro’s A. L. Byers, A. J. Kilpatrick and others, about 34 miles N W. of Antwerp, O., where we met with the little church in the evening, and next morning took train at 3 o’clock, at Antwerp, O., leaving many dear brethren and sisters bathed in tears because of our departure from among them. We also left our dear Bro’s A. J. K. & A. L B., and Sister Frankie Miller, who expected to continue the meeting near Antwerp as long as the Lord willed. We reached our destination in Southern Ind. (where we expect to make our home as long as the Lord wills), on Tuesday evening. Were met at the railroad station by our dearly beloved Bro. Benjamin George, and conveyed to his home. The people here seem very anxious for the truth. We spoke the Word of Life Sabbath afternoon and night to an attentive congregation. We earnestly desire all to pray for us and the work in these parts. And to all who may be desirous to correspond with us, we would say that our address in the future will be Hayden, Jennings Co., Ind.

We remain your brother and sister, saved in Jesus, sanctified, made while and tried, and kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation, ready to be reavealed in the last time.

J. N. & M. J. Howard.

WORK FOR THE LORD.

_____

To all the saints in everyplace: I feel led of the Lord to speak to you through the Trumpet, for a grand rally for Jesus and His blesssed cause. I think the Lord shows me how the saints can accomplish a great deal in the name of Jesus for the next three months. So I will tell you just how it can be done. One thing is for us all to send as much as one dollar, or more if we can, and smaller amounts where more cannot be given, to the Trumpet office, and then send in names of persons for the paper to be sent to for three or six months. Think about your friends and all well disposed to hear the pure Gospel, to whom it has not been preached. If 500 saints will do this, asking God to direct in the matter, and asking God to double His blessings upon the Trumpet writers, what a great interest would be awakened in many hearts. It would cause many to tend the. C. M’s that would not hear of them otherwise. Also it would soon add a great many more subscribers to the Trumpet list.

Some say they have consecrated all to God; that they belong to Him, and all they have. But call on some of them to help in the cause of Jesus, and they have not 25cts. to spare, it taking all they have to do them. They can not spare any of the means, they claim to belongs to God. If a man were to give me any thing, and I call for it to use some way, and he refuses to let it go, and claims he needs it, tell me what benefit would his gift be to me? Well that is the way some people give to the Lord. Oh! may God help such to see how selfish they are.

Now to the saints everywhere: if God has given you stewardship over as much as one hundred dollars, cannot you use one dollar of His means in the way suggested? Let all go to work in more earnest for the Lord, and His cause.

There are some other ways that I consider God gives us to work for Him. Go to Jesus and ask Him to anoint you for work; then think of some of your friends, where they probably have not heard of the evening light. Write them a long letter telling them you are wholly sanctified, then tell them how sweet it is to live such a life. Note them down passages in God’s Word, teaching on sanctification and holiness. All- so tell them something about the true Church, the oneness that God’s people enjoy, and be sure to write them to come to some of the C. M’s. You must get an interest started in the hearts of men to get them to move out.

Also, there are a great many of the saints scattered about. Hunt them up and in some way get them to the camp-meeting, or go and preach in their place. Dear brothers and sisters, I mean to prove my faith by my works. Let us so work for the next three months, that we cannot see anything left undone that we could have done. What means God has given, use all to His glory. Work and give and there will be the grandest victories all through Jesus, that have ever been witnessed. Now let all saints put forth every effort in the name of Jesus. Get ready and keep ready to work for the Lord. Let us reach as many dark places as possible in the next three months in the ways spoken of, and in every possible way. If we do all we can, when these three months are past God will show us more to do in the next.

As camp meetings are coming on, there will be means needed to help the workers from place to place, and to meet their other needs. Well, if you have a debt to meet in the future, you always commence preparing for it in time. Now let us manage God’s work here as good and faithful stewards. So it might be a good thing to begin now. Let not every one see how little he can get off with, but see how much he can have to use to the honor and glory of God. May God put a mighty zeal in the hearts of all the saints. Dear saints, pray for me that I may do good fighting for Jesus and the truth every day.

Your brother, sanctified wholly just now.

W. M. Wilson.

Norwood, Mo.

NOTE.

O dearly beloved! ponder well the above wise counsel. In May we printed over twenty thousand papers for free distribution, which at subscription price would be worth $500. Brother Byrum purchased 3000 names from one man who makes that a business, and also got several hundred names free from another party. To all these addresses we sent papers, and a printed letter and circular of our literature. The postage for mailing those letters cost over $30. Thank God, many true hearts have been touched, and letters are almost daily coming in expressing much gratitude to God for the precious light that has reached them. Some in almost hopeless affliction have written us with tears of joy, thanking God and taking courage, and asking our prayers. O dear saints! we are working with all our might, with a faithful force of workers, all laboring without wages, to send the mighty saving truth of God to every comer of the inhabited earth; and will you all with us practice self-denial, to light the humble-hearted on the pathway of hapiness and heaven. Send all the names you can, and do what you can to help send them the truth. Whenever you talk with a person that seems honest toward God, take his or her name and address and send it in. Especially remember the poor. We are now sending out a vast amount of printed matter each month, and God wills that we issue weekly ere long. We are very certain that no house on earth sends out as much fresh printed matter with as small an income. This is as it should be. If we have been blessed with more light than others, we should do more for the groping masses. O all ye dear readers, let us do with all our might what our hands find to do. Try to take subscribers wherever possible, and donate it to others, and God will bless you in the deed. Amen.

“NOW I beseech you brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.” — Rom. 16:17. The earnestness and impressiveness of the language used in this entreaty to the children of God, makes us to understand its vast importance to the work of God, to the furtherance of His kingdom on earth. But for centuries no scripture passage has received less attention from those to whom it is addressed. Therefore in the tear and love of God we desire to call every earnest Christian to a careful and prayerful consideration thereof, knowing that as God’s wisdom is far above man’s wisdom, a knowledge of God’s desires intended to be expressed in these words will be for our souls’ eternal good and for the welfare of other precious souls to whom we are to preach the words of eternal truth. Therefore we can expect His blessing upon us as we search the scriptures to know His will. The first thought that appears to us is the awful responsibility that rests upon the children of God in marking or recognizing those who cause offences or divisions contrary to the Lord’s doctrine which is the same as the apostles’ doctrine. — Mark 1:27; Matt. 22:33; Matt. 7:28, 29; Matt. 4:23; Matt. 28:19, 20; Mark 16:15, 16; Jno. 7:16. From these scriptures we see that Jesus taught a doctrine, and that every word was so important that God the Father gave it to Him, and that He was not ashamed of teaching “a doctrine.” We find also that whatever. He taught the disciples, they were to teach to all nations, even to the end of the world and from Mark 16:15, 16, we find that this preaching was the Gospel. So we see that the Lord’s doctrine is whatever He taught and that is the Gospel of Christ. We find that the disciples obeyed the Lord, teaching “no other doctrine but the glorious Gospel of the blessed God which was committed to our trust,” according to 1 Tim. 1:3-12; Acts 2:42; Acts 5:28; Gal. 1:6-13. If any man taught otherwise, not consenting to the words of the Lord Jesus, it was because of pride. 1 Tim. 6:1-6. Therefore he was not a child of God according to Mal. 4:1. As this doctrine proceeded from God, it would be the height of presumption and folly for man to think he could improve upon it, yet we find in 2 Tim, 4:3, that a time would come when the people would not endure good and sound doctrine but would desire teachers of pleasing things. Yet God’s teachers must hold fast the faithful Word that they may be able by sound doctrine to convince the gainsayers (Titus 1:9.), and that the children of God who have heard the pure Gospel, might abide in the truth, for whosoever trangresseth and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. — 2 Jno. 6, 9; 1 Jno. 2:24; Eph. 4:14, 15. We learn from these texts that where the pure doctrine of the Word of God is preached, those who reject it and walk or teach contrary to it fall away from God. We also see that there is no excuse for ignorance of the truth, but every one who turns from God’s commands to the commands or teachings of men is condemned by the words of Jesus in Matt. 15:1-10, and by inspiration in Col. 2:8, for their worship is vain or of no value because they know not God by not putting implicit confidence in His eternal Word. These texts with 1 Tim. 4:1-8; 5:1-9; 6:1-6; Acts 15:1-33; also 2 Tim. 2:14-20; 3rd chapter 4:1-5; also the 1st and 2nd chapters of Titus show us some of the things that are contrary to the sound doctrine of Christ, and are teachings of men. Yet we find no denial of justfication by faith or sanctification by faith in the in stances given of false teachers, showing that men do not have to deny these fundamental prerequisites of salvation in order to be false teachers (as some contend), but to oppose the teaching of God’s holy Word in any particular, and to prefer to receive contrary teaching or doctrine makes men in opposition to God, or blasphemers of God, for it is impious irreverance of His eternal truth. These texts teach strongly that men must not only be children of God by spiritual birth, but must know the truth that they may comply with our text of marking those who teach things contrary to the Bible. And this is to extend down to the latter days according to the text given, showing that those who live at that time as children of God are no exception but are to teach God’s truth amid numerous contending and conflicting false doctrines. We will search the scriptures to see if this exalted privilege of “knowing the truth” is granted unto God’s little ones. We look to 1 Tim. 2:4; 2 Tim. 2:25; 3:7-11, 16, 17. From these scriptures we find that we are not only required to know the truth; to preach and teach it, but that some are condemned because they do not come to the knowledge of the truth, through resisting it. But every honest, willing and obedient child of God may expect the “Holy Ghost to lead him into all truth” according to the promise that if any man lack wisdom let him ask of God who giveth liberally and upbraideth not, and it shall be given. How? By a careful study of His Word to man, leaning wholly upon Him to make clear His will. For instance, in order to know how to walk and teach pleasing to God we must know what is baptism. So we compare scripture with scripture wherever we can find anything on that subject, determined to do just as He says, leaning not to our own understanding nor to others, but wholly upon the Holy Ghost and Word of God. According to your faith be it unto you, and when the matter is clearly decided in this way there is no bigotry in standing firmly upon the Word when the Spirit of God has led into the truth on this subject. So treating each theme of the Gospel, we come to where we can rightly divide the Word of truth according to Second Tim. 2:14-19. Here we find some who taught contrary to the Word of truth that the “resurrection was past,” and this overthrew the faith of some, and put the teachers in the class of blasphemers because they denied God Almighty by denying His Word. If this case were to be treated now by the majority of professing Christians they would say, “ Oh well! He is awful crooked in doctrine, but all right at heart,” thus receiving them as children of God instead of doing as Paul did, “deliver them over to satan,” that is, class them as satan’s children as Jesus did the Pharisees. But some will say “let not man undertake to judge his brother” Dear soul this is not judging in the sense in which it is condemned. For God sets the standard of His Word and requires His children to recognize it and abide by His judgment according to the 5th chap of 1 Cor. If any one without the knowledge of God’s standard, should of his own wisdom or judgment condemn or excuse any one contrary to God’s Judgment, then that would be judging in the sense in which it is forbidden. The Lord help us that we may judge righteous judgment; that we may try the spirit by the Word of God, There are many who think to avoid responsibility by never applying God’s Word to those who do not comply with its requirements. But that is impossible, for responsibility cannot be avoided. It rests upon each individual, and the harder one tries to avoid it, the heavier it rests upon that soul. Let each God-fearing soul look to God for wisdom in complying with our text, but think not to avoid it, for it shall judge us in the last great day. True humility is shown by a full and free reliance upon God’s word as a sufficient guide for our lives in all things. Oh, the power of the Word of God! Let your faith take stronger hold upon it, that it may be “unto those who are saved, the power of God.” May each reader of this subject carefully study it further in the word of God, which is His revealed will to man. Before my spiritual vision, stands forth two trees directly in opposition. The one of grand proportional dimensions, symmetrical, beautiful, a living, never fading green, restful to look upon, strong to lean upon, sheltering to rest beneath, strong to deliver from the enemy, a safe abiding place for God’s children. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” So this tree stands before us as Jesus, the Truth. He, the strength and life, or trunk, bears His words before the world as branches, each branch a part of Himself, His teaching on some theme essential to righteousness, inseparable as living truth, each in its proper place, each bearing other smaller branches and twigs, as out of one theme of truth springs others that add grace and beauty, and bear the signs of life as shown by the beautiful green leaves. Oh, that words or the Spirit of God might bring to each soul’s view the exceeding liveliness of the doctrine of Christ! Can any word or teaching of man add anything thereto? Oh, no, it would only mar its loveliness. It could not partake of the life, and would only fall to the ground in the storm of judgment. Oh, for a stronger and purer love for God’s eternal truth in every professing child of God! How soon would the errors of centuries be swept into the past, and the bride of Christ stand before the world clear as the sun. But let us look upon the 2nd tree which stands in opposition, as the work of the devil who was a liar from the beginning and abode not in the truth. This tree while large is disproportional, weak and dead, decayed from the very roots, with broken, crooked gnarled branches, and dead leaves. As it partakes of His nature of deception, it stands before every soul who has not the “love of the truth,” as a living, beautiful tree whose branches, as the most beautiful teachings of men, are equal to the branches of the tree of life. Therefore many to-day are taking branches from both these trees and cementing them together with their own pride, making unto themselves “Christmas trees. ” Without trunk, without life, only a play-thing to fall to pieces at the sound of God’s voice in judgment. God help men and women with priceless souls to stop playing religion. Help them to enquire of God, and not of men, the way of life. Make the children of God strong, more valiant for every word of God, preaching the gospel of God to every creature.

TESTlMONlES.

“Thy Testimonies are Wonderful.” — Psa. 119:129.

Summitsville, Ind.

Dear Trumpet Readers: — I feel led to add my testimony to the glory of God. I am glad that I am saved and sanctified, and kept by the mighty power of God. Out of babylon, free from all sects and secrecy. Glory to God for salvation that is worth something in this world! God led me out of the sect in fasting and praying, and then showed it to me in His Word. God is our refuge in time of affliction: He heals all our diseases. My experience will not allow me to go any where else for help, and God wonderfully comforts me with the promises in Ex. 9:14, and Deut. 7:15. — “And the Lord will take away from thee all sickness, and will put none of the evil disease of Egypt, which thou knowest upon thee, but will lay them upon them that hate thee.” Turn to Deut. 28:60, 61, 62, 4:26, 28, 29, 30, 31. This 29th verse is where the Lord commenced digging me up. Glory to His blessed name forever! The wonderful impression bore on my mind after conversion that I must preach the Gospel. I plead ignorant for a long time, until I found it was dragging me into darkness. Then I had to make a surrender in this way: I said, “Lord, I will do anything, just fit me for the work.” Oh! what a preparation has been going on ever since I still stand on that consecration. Although I have a wife and children, who are very near to my heart, to support, yet when God opens the way I feel that I must go. It seems the way has been closed thus far with but very little opening. My experience at the present corresponds with that of the Hebrew children while going through some deep trust in the Lord. I feel like some of the dross has been taken out of me, and the pure metal shines more brightly. Glory to God for a growth in grace, and the knowledge of the truth. I feel so completely resigned. If it were God’s will to call me from His footstool, I could just shout Amen! But if I stay, the command Jesus gave his disciples — Mat. 28:19, 20 — must be fulfilled in me, and the evidence that Jesus said we might have in Mark 16:16, 17, 18 to show where we stand in the work of the living God. I see through the Trumpet from time to time where so many are still under the afflictions that God promised the disobedient; are suffering the same diseases the ungodly and the empty professors suffer. O brethren! By faith in line with the Word pull out from under the pronounced curses. The Lord Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil. Pray for us that we may do the whole will of God.

Your brother under the blood according to John 17:17.

Dear Trumpet Readers: — I must say that of all the so-called holiness professors here, that my wife and I are standing alone on the pure Word of God. Some belong to the Methodist sect, and others refuse to obey the whole Word of God. There are some that teach that the ordinances of Christ belong to the old law. And one teaches that baptism, though of the New Testament, was only for the Jews. Thus, because they follow not the plain Word of God, but their own opinions, they are a true sample or outcome of Mystic Babylon. We ask the dear saints to pray God in our behalf that we may give the people the pure Word regardless of men.

From your Bro, all for the truth.

Dear Saints: — I know of a truth this morning that the Lord does save and sanctify me wholly, and the blood of Jesus Christ cleansed me from all sin after I was born into the family of God. He called me out of sect babylon and I was baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. There are a few of us here that are willing to follow the lowly Jesus. O! I do praise His name every day of my life. Pray for us and our children that they may give their hearts to God. Amen.

Your brother in Christ Jesus.

Dear Trumpet Family: — God bless you all with the fulness of His love. Amen! I am at Roanoke, at present visiting God’s little ones. Since I came to this place, I find the dear Lord has worked out all for my good. O praise be unto God and the Lamb forever and ever! Amen! To-day finds me well, saved and wholly sanctified and satisfied. O hallelujah! I cannot thank and praise Him enough for what He is dong for me. Last Sabbath I went to the saints meeting near Huntington, Ind. O! I shall never forget what a glorious meeting we had in Jesus name. The Lord gave me perfect victory. He filled me with His glory, and wonderfully blessed me in prayer and testimony. Glory be to God! I am all given up to Jesus, and I know I am saved to the uttermost, and by God’s grace I intend to be true to Jesus. And we ask the earnest prayers of the dear saints. Amen!

Your sister.

Dear Saints: — I feel led of the Lord to testify through the Gospel Trumpet, that the dear Lord still saves me from all sin, and keeps me in sweet peace with Him. I glorify God in my body, soul and spirit, which are His, and have the love of Jesus burning in my heart day by day, and a great desire to see poor sinners coming to Jesus to get saved.

“Love holds a royal sceptre,
And Mercy looketh down,
Both calling to the sinner,
Come wear a starry crown.

Oh, sweet divine compassion!
Poor sinner, taste and see,
If grace thy heart may fashion,
Then love shall reign in thee.”

I am sinking deeper into the will of God than ever before, and the blessed evening light is dear to me, and the glorious testimonies of the saints. Oh, how it fills our heart with love and joy to know that we are all of one body, one mind, and speak the same things, for we are the body of Christ, of His flesh and bones! O praise the Lord for a full and free salvation that we find in Jesus. We have good meetings here, and the blessing of God is with us. We have a good Sunday school started in the name of the Lord for the benefit of the children.

Your Bro. and sister, saved by the blood of Jesus, and kept by the power of God, and sanctified by a second work of grace.

Dear Saints: — I wish to have my testimony on one of the pages of the Gospel Trumpet, that I have felt the life giving blood and tasted of the heavenly gift and am made partaker of the Holy Ghost and have the full assurance within myself that Jesus is the Christ, and I will further say that I am not ashamed to contend for the same faith that was once delivered unto the saints. I love to hear of the determination of so many of the saints through the Trumpet. It is quite encouraging, I think, to all its readers. I wish to state to the saints that I was brought up and rocked in the cradle of sectarian security and was taught to believe that certain portion of the New Testament scriptures were done away with and no longer needed. And I stepped into the so called D. C. church, was baptized of course, that being their order, and I felt as if all was well with me for a few months, when suddenly I came in contact with a small band of the saints who at once overcame me with the great Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, and as it is quick and powerful, I was compelled to fall in great astonishment and in deep fear. I knew at once that something had to be done in order to gain pardon. I then most earnestly plead with God for aid that I might be enabled to know the true way of holiness, and thanks be to God and the Lamb, I was directed by dreams and Gospel persuasions until I was fully convinced and convicted. I made firm resolutions that others might do as they would, but as for my part I was going to try the realities of the saints’ religion in the Lord Jesus Christ, and since, I have become an adopted heir in the kingdom of God. I can say that many happy seasons have I seen, and while the opposition of the world is great, the power of the Lord is greater. We have the rich promise in view to encourage us on our short pilgrimage here below. I beseech all the saints that are readers of the Trumpet, or elsewhere, to be faithful unto the end. For He is strong to save and mighty to redeem. And I humbly ask an interest in all the prayers of God’s servants. The Trumpet is encouraging to me as I am not situated near any church of the saints. I have to share many long hours in hungering after Gospel sermons. Oh how glad I would be if some of the readers of the Trumpet would correspond by letter to me. Hoping that some word in this poorly-composed letter may find an enlodgement in one or more hearts, and have its desired effect is my prayer. My love to all the saints. O that it were so that some fellow laborers of the gospel would come through this section of the country! As I believe that great good could be accomplished. May mercy and peace, and the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all the saints.

Your Bro. in Christ.

Dear Bro. W. — God bless you and all the saints. It makes my very soul praise God, and sets me all on fire for the Lord, to read the Trumpet. I am so glad you came round this way. I do realize that it was good for me, and praise the Lord I can see much good done in the name of the Lord. Bro. Bradley was here and preached for us Saturday night and Sabbath. We had a glorious good meeting. O praise the Lord for victory in my soul! I do know that the Lord is going to grant victory in this field. I can see the powers of darkness falling back, since the blessed truth has been preached in the power of God, and it revealed such light that men have been able to see where they are standing. I do pray God that His Word, may take deep root in many hearts. “For such as be blessed of Him shall inherit the earth, and such as be cursed of Him shall be cut off.” God bless you all. Amen!
