I’LL GO WITH THEE.

_____

I’ll go with the man of sorrow,
All the steps the lowly trod.
Let me ever meekly follow,
Follow with the Son of God.

I’ll go with thee in believing
All the Father bid thee say.
And go with thee in obeying,
As thou also didst obey.

With thee suffer, yes my Savior,
It is just that we should taste
Of the cup our sins, so bitter,
To thy holy lips have pressed.

In reproach and persecution,
Jesus, I will go with thee.
Choose my lot and humble station,
Only let me follow thee.

I’ll go with thee to the battle,
With thee face the darkest foe.
Life or death, now and forever,
Where thou goest I will go.

A WARNING.

_____

BEWARE lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the traditions of men, after the rudiments of the world and not after Christ. Col. 2:8. Time and time again are we warned in the word of God to be cautious and alert, so as not to be allured by the smooth tongues of philosophers. There are many false teachers in the world to day who deny the Lord, and there are many that follow their pernicious ways. But a true child of God knows the voice of Jesus and follows him. And yet we must be careful and take heed lest we fall or be deceived by sect oratory. I warn all of those that have stepped out in the evening light not to attend any place where they preach sect philosophy. We often hear of Babylon philosophers becoming alarmed and agitated on the subject of moral depravity, and then they meet together to see what can be done for the uplifting and elevating of the masses, and to subdue sin and crime. First one will advance certain principles which he thinks will elevate the degraded to a higher life. And then another will project his plans which he believes will aid fallen humanity to reach a better condition. So the meeting proceeds on this line for awhile, and then some one says, Let us pray. The prayer will be something like this: “Oh Lord, bless the principles advanced and the plans projected in this meeting for the uplifting of poor fallen humanity, and help the brethren to carry them out. Amen.” Forgetting that the plan of salvation and redemption was finished on the cross at Calvary over eighteen hundred years ago by the beloved Son of God. Any thing that is complete or finished is made perfect; anything that is made perfect cannot be improved or made better. Therefore it is the height of folly for any man to try to elevate a sin-stained soul by his philosophy.

Christ is the Savior of the world. He was manifested in the flesh to destroy the works of the devil. He was given as a healer to heal the nations; he is the balm that makes the wounded whole. He is the way the truth and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by him. There is no other name given under heaven or among men whereby we can be saved, only through the name of Jesus. He is the rock from whence the living waters flow. He is the bread of life that satisfies the hungry soul. He is the only ark of safety. He can break all the chains of bondage, set the captive soul at perfect liberty, save to the uttermost, give sweet peace and contentment to the one whose trust is stayed on him. Then we warn the false teachers to quit preaching theory and opinions and get saved of God and go to preaching the everlasting gospel of the kingdom of Christ, and lead poor souls to the foot of the cross, and then direct their eyes to the bleeding Lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the world.

Every person that is called into the ministry of the gospel of Jesus receives this commission, Go and preach my gospel to every living creature. Hold no man’s person in admiration; God is no respecter of persons, neither are his ministers, but they are to preach just as willingly to the poor as to the rich. Therefore make no distinction. Freely ye have received, freely give. And then it is customary down in Babylon for the preachers to invite the secret societies to the house of God and tell them how much good they are doing, and what a great benefit they are to civilization, but it is very little they say about the blessed Savior who preached against secrecy when he said, Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold he is in the desert, go not forth, behold he is in the secret chambers, believe it not. Matt. 24:26. And yet these sect preachers belong to secret orders and preach in secret. But Christ ever taught openly and in secret did he nothing. Then get saved from secrecy, take the gospel and preach against it, then you will glorify God and see souls saved.

The philosophers to day are deceiving many and making merchandise of the simple, by telling the people that there is a necessity for different sects, or as they call them, churches. Jesus never built but one church, and that the gates of hell shall not prevail against. Matt. 16:18. False prophets preach Methodism, Lutheranism, Calvinism, Presbyterianism, and many other isms and schisms. But the apostle Paul tells us in 1 Cor. 12:25 there are no schisms in the body of Christ. Jesus taught us that a kingdom divided against itself would fall, or a house divided against itself could not stand, and when our soul is illuminated with the Spirit of God we can certainly see that if Christ’s kingdom were divided into all these isms it would fall. The apostle Peter tells us that the kingdom of Christ is an everlasting kingdom. 2 Pet. 1:11. Jesus said, My kingdom is not this world; hence, it is a spiritual kingdom and it takes a spiritual mind or intellect to discern it. The natural man cannot discern it because it must be spiritually discerned. Then lay aside your theology and go to preach the plain, pure, unadulterated word of God. Never mind great swelling words, but be as Paul who preached in great plainness of speech, who determined to know nothing save Christ and him crucified. Forsake Methodism and all isms, preach Christ. Who dares to tell people that we cannot live without sin, and that we must sin more or less every day? This is inconsistent with the gospel. For whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin, for his seed remaineth in him and he cannot sin because he is born of God. 1 Jno. 3:9. Jesus said, Go and sin no more. Now our Savior would not tell anyone to do something they could not do. He commands us to abide in him. If we sin every day we cannot abide in him, because whosoever abideth in him sinneth not. He that committeth sin is of the devil. 1 John 3:6-8. And he that is of the devil can have no fellowship with Christ, for there is no fellowship existing between light and darkness, or sin and righteousness. If the Son therefore shall make you free ye shall be free indeed. Free from what? Being made free from sin ye became the servants of righteousness. Rom. 6:18. A man that is made free from sin has quit sinning. V. 22. But now being made free from sin and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness and the end everlasting life. A person that sins every day cannot bear holy fruit.

Beware of false prophets which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit, but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit; every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits shall ye know them. Matt. 7:15, 20.

The soul that sinneth shall die. Ezek. 18:20. The wages of sin is death. Rom. 6:23. Then remember that if you take away a word from the word of God, your part will be taken out of the book of life. Jesus is the fountain that was opened in the house of David for all sin and uncleanness; his blood cleanseth us from all unrighteousness, just as soon as we meet the conditions of his word, and walk in all the light he gives. Dear ones in Christ, beware of all false teachers, have on the whole armor, get your logic from heaven and give a hearty greeting to all of God’s true firebrands. Hallelujah to God for a salvation that saves from all sin; that gives us perfect victory over all the works of darkness through our Lord Jesus Christ!

__________

NOT BY GROWTH.

_____

All living things a growth may have,
But size is only increased;
While inbred sin to be effaced
Is in Jesus’ blood deceased.

Many and various are the opinions of men regarding the moral state of the Christian’s soul and how it is effected. Jesus has spoken clearly and plainly of the state of the soul prepared for heaven: “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” Matt. 5:8. It is only the soul made pure that is ready and fitted for the golden city of jasper walls whose light is the Lamb and the glory of God.

Some believe that regeneration is a work wrought in the soul by the Spirit of God, but that sanctification is acquired by a zealous performance of generous works. Others again have the opinion that spiritual life can spontaneously generate itself; by the keeping, so far as you can, God’s laws, you gradually become better and better until in the course of time you have gained, by habit, a sufficient quantity of religious nature as to consider yourself having spiritual life. I suppose it is believed by most all that the soul must be pure and holy to enter heaven. The question then is when and how is this purity effected. The Bible clearly decides both.

This present world is where the soul is renewed in the image of God. It is here that we are to live “soberly, righteously and godly.” It is here our hearts are purified by faith, and receive the Holy Spirit. There is a gulf fixed between the natural and spiritual man. The eyes have not seen nor the ears heard, neither has it entered into the heart of the former the things which God has prepared for those that love him; but the eyes of the latter see by the revelations of the Spirit the wondrous love of God. Their ears hear the soft sweet accents of joy and peace, and their heart enjoys an understanding of God and the glories he has prepared for them; therefore they give praise unto his name.

Again we have the wide difference between the natural and spiritual man described in 1 Jno. 5:12. “He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” Jesus has taken up his abode in the soul of the spiritual, but the natural is utterly void of Christ life. Now is this chasm separating the two, bridged by a succession of good works and performance of rites and ceremonies, or through the atoning blood of Jesus? The transition from natural to spiritual life is passing from death unto life, is being born again, and it is not reasonable to suppose that such a wondrous change can take place in the heart of anyone and the person not be aware of it. I admit if it were by a gradual process, the work could be accomplished and the person be unconscious of the change wrought. But securing spiritual life in this way is contrary to the teachings of the Bible, and to reason. Many are professing to be spiritual and they know when or how, or if there be any change in their heart; but consider themselves so because they subscribe to some creed and occasionally do deeds of charity They find out when the storms of adversity and opposition come, that their spiritual house had only a sandy foundation (good works), and goes down leaving them to mourn in the ruins.

The dead cannot grow into the living life, cannot come gradually, but suddenly. At one moment the soul is dead; the next it is living. The infant born into the world, — from whence has its life come? Not of itself. So is every one that is born of the Spirit. By compliance with natural laws the child grows, but life is imparted unto it from some living source. There is a growth in grace, but we are born of the Spirit. Spiritual life is given us from some pre-existing life. It is not by works of righteousness which we can do, but it is through the love and mercy of God that we are truly Christians.

God made man holy and pure, and while in this state of purity was insensible of evil, but by listening to Satan he lost confidence in God, disobeyed his commands and became acquainted with evil, and now if he could have put forth his hand and taken of the tree of life, that is, if he by some good deed or obedience to God could have restored his soul to purity and live forever, he would not be really sensible of the magnitude of his transgression. But that man may be cognizant of the awfulness of sin, God placed guards to guard the way to the tree of life, and it became impossible for man again to be in the likeness of God except by the great sacrifice of his beloved Son. Oh my God, what a price thou hast paid to rescue my soul from the flames of hell! God does not give it as a plaything into our hands to sin and re-in- state ourselves by outward performance of righteous acts.

Sin, thou art a monster horror,
Fills the life with awful terror,
The heart of joy and peace bereft,
Sin — the awful sting of death.

But God his Son a ransom gave,
And purchased victory o’er the grave.
His wondrous love, ah, who can tell?
He saved my soul from burning hell.

“In this was manifested the love of God toward us because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world that we might live through him.” 1 Jno. 4:9. “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life and this life is in his Son.” 1 Jno. 5:11. “In him was life: and the life was the light of men.” Jno. 1:4. “For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them: even so the Son quickeneth [maketh alive] whom he will.” Jno. 5:21.

The sinner is dead. Life is in Jesus. Jesus forgives his sins, speaks life to his soul, and he knows God and realizes the priceless worth of his salvation. He is now a child of God’s, not by generating himself but by “being born of God.” Now there begins a growth in grace, but there is after “being born again” still an inherent depravity remaining in the soul which is not eradicated by growth. When the soul receives spiritual life in regeneration, it receives all the graces of the Holy Spirit. Sanctification is not the addition of spiritual graces not possessed in regeneration. These graces are so linked together that we cannot receive one without receiving all. But in the merely justified state there is existing in the heart a nature sin-wardly inclined, but that there is an evil nature in the heart together with the Spirit of God, does not imply an assimilation of each into a common nature. They are each in the heart, but instead of forming any combination they are antagonistic the one to the other, and it is spoken of by the apostle as a warfare.

There is a growth of the graces of the Spirit in the justified heart, an increase of light, affording perhaps an increase of power which holds in check the evil inclination of the carnal nature, but does not remove it. The nature of sin cannot be changed, it must be destroyed and a new nature given. Growth involves in its meaning only an increase of what you already possess, while sanctification means a purging out of the inherent pollution. An increase of light and strength affords easier victories over the conquered foe, but does not expel it. Not as the light of the sun bleaches a piece of common cloth, is sin bleached out of the soul by divine light; but if we walk in the light as it comes upon us from heaven, the blood of Jesus will expel the last particle of sin. A tree which has received a blow from the woodman’s ax may by growth bury the scar far beneath the surface, and appear beautiful without, but the scar remains. The one great evil of the scar is that in time it will cause the decay, and the corruption of the entire tree. The inbeing of sin remains as a scar which may for a time be kept out of sight, that is, have no outward manifestation, but which will in time so vigorously strive for dominion as usually to discourage the believer, and he gives the warfare o’er.

The spiritual graces are much hindered by the inward depravity which we inherit from the first man Adam. That the development of these graces may go on uninterrupted, it is the will of God that the believer be wholly sanctified. “For this purpose was the Son of God manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil.” Through the second man Adam we have the destruction of all inward evil tendency, and complete restoration to the holiness God ordained for us before the foundation of the world.

Dear reader, if you desire to be born into the family of God or to be sanctified wholly, you must before God plead the merits of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Your brother, sanctified by the power of God,

Chas. Orr.

A BAD AND SUDDEN END OF THIS LIFE.

While holding meetings in Portland, Ind., on Wednesday, May 24, we were informed that there was a telegram at the office for me. On going there, I was startled with this brief dispatch. “Sarah died this morning in Cincinnati.” Signed

L. F. Keller.

He is a brother of the one we ought to be able to call our wife, and this fact rendered the familiar name “Sarah,” all sufficient in the dispatch. O my Lord, is it possible that she is cut off in the midst of her days! She who seemed so fresh and well is suddenly called to be the first to break the circle of six children, all of whom were early instructed in the fear of the Lord. Ah! we cannot help the convictions, that had the dear woman never been alienated by the adversary to break her solemn vows, and held by a blind and erring influence from returning to the obligations of a mother and wife; yea, and had she not been by that influence led to obtain a bill, and that on absolutely false grounds, she would be alive, well and happy to day. But alas, it is all past now. Even kind hearts may err in the counsel they give, and the influence they exert. But all is forgiven, and blessings upon all are invoked from a heart that feels sad for the erring and departed, and yet sympathizes deeply with the dear friends of the deceased.

We wrote immediately to our friend, who had kindly informed us of the departure of the one who once so filled the vision of our heart, for the particulars of her death, and received the prompt reply that she died with acute typhoid fever, to which was added peritonites, and that she did not express herself about the future. Out of a full heart we would love to say much, but we only have space for these thoughts. O may God comfort the sorrowing mother, brothers and sisters.

The unhappy woman, having forsaken her God her husband and child, became married over a year ago to another man. But alas, how often the path that leads from God is cut short.

Bro. Byrum: is it right for saved people to go to a sewing bee? Please answer through the Trumpet.

A well-to-do family here, (a professor in the M. E. sect,) made a sewing bee, and some of the saints went. The crowd was made up of sinners and sect professors. I denounced such things, and don’t think it a fit place for a child of God to go, because it is of the world. If the family were poor it might make a difference, but they are well able to hire such work done. Then I suppose the garments were made after the fashions of the world, therefore I thought it was lending a helping hand and bidding God speed to the works of the devil. Now if I am wrong in denouncing such things, I am willing to be corrected. God has showed me that the devil only wants to get the children of God to take just one little step wrong at a time, then by and by take another and so on.

NOTE.

Under the circumstances I should consider that you did your duty according to the word. Ezek. 33:2-7, James 1:27; 4:4.

Yours truly,

G. P. Agent.

Those coming from the south and purchasing tickets for Lee, must be sure and have all baggage checked to Grand Junction camp ground and put off at the camp ground. Lee is a station north of this place and every one coming should either get off train at the camp ground or Grand Junction.

Bring your blankets, quilts, etc., and come prepared to make yourself comfortable and stay during the entire meeting.

Dear Brethren: A series of gospel meetings will be held beginning about June 23, to continue as long as the Lord wills, at Cadott, Chippewa Co., Wis. All the saints and lovers of truth and such who desire to seek the Lord, either for soul or body in Wis., or elsewhere are cordially invited to attend the meeting. We are expecting a feast from Father’s table. Cadott is on the Wis. Central R. R. and about 100 miles south of St. Paul. Address Bro. G. Greely. I desire some ministerial brother, a singer, either bass or soprano, to accompany us in our tour to the Pacific coast.

Dear Saints of God: My testimony is that I am saved and kept by the power of God. Hallelujah! Oh I do praise the Lord for this wonderful salvation that saves even me. The Lord is my physician for both soul and body. I had been afflicted all my life with pain and deafness in my left ear, and for the past two years there has been a watery discharge from the ear which caused me so much inconvenience. I thought of taking my case to the Lord, but Satan suggested that it was too late now, for the drum of the ear was gone and it would be unreasonable to expect the Lord to heal me. I saw by the word that this was a delusion of the devil; for Jesus says, “Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name I will do it.” John 14:13, 14. Praise the Lord, I just stepped out on his promises while at a meeting with the saints here. I asked Brother J. F. Lundy to anoint for the healing of my ear. and as we proceeded to obey James 5:14. the Lord healed my disease and filled me with his glory. After I came home from meeting in the evening, I closed the right ear and I could hear the clock tick with the left, which had been healed. Oh bless the Lord forever and ever! I am determined to live for God alone. Praise his name! My husband and daughter were saved during the meeting held here by Brothers Lundy and Carter. May the Lord bless the above named brethren. They have been faithful laborers among us. If the Lord wills we would like to have them hold meeting here again in the fall. My prayer is that God will bless all the dear saints every where and keep them faithful. Amen.

Anna E. Fidler.

Dear Saints: We are happy to report once more from home. Arrived this morning, well and saved to the everlasting uttermost. Find the dear ones at home all well and saved, and busy at work. Oh praise God for his great goodness and mercy to his children! The songs for the new book have all been sent in, and the plates are perhaps all made by this time. In about a week more we will have books.

Bro. and Sister Warren, Bro. G. W. Howard, and Sister Warwick held a meeting of two weeks in Portland, Ind. There are quite a number there who seem to love the truth, and we trust that future labors, by some one whom the Lord may send there, will result in the salvation of many souls.

A very few sought the Lord, and found his grace. A meeting of much interest was held there last winter by the Howard brethren, and much good seed was sown in many hearts, that will yet produce fruit unto God.

We held some meetings on the streets, and a great many heard the word of God with good attention. This street work all of God’s ministers should attend to in towns and cities. We have written a few songs specially adapted for street meetings which will tell on many hearts.

His blessed will. We came to this place one week ago and commenced meeting a few miles from town in the Bethlehem W. B. meeting house. Though our com ng was unexpected, yet great excitement prevailed and there was no small stir about the way, as a goodly number of the most spiritual of the sect were standing aloof, waiting for a full gospel. Two consecrated at this place. We have preached at six places in East Pa. The week before last I preached thirteen times. Many doors open for the pure gospel in these parts. Who will come? If you can’t leave your family, bring them along. If you come in the name of the Lord you will not lack any good thing.

Dear Trumpet Readers: This morning I am praising God for full salvation. Glory to God! I have been a few days with the dear saints near Tiff City, Mo. Had some precious meetings with them Some of them were built up. We found some dear ones gone into bondage. May God speedily deliver them. I stopped with dear Bro. Armstrong, who has suffered for a long time with afflictions that has caused paralysis; also lost his eye sight. He requests that on the 4th of June, at 12 o’clock, the saints of God pray for the sanctification of his soul, and if it is God’s will, that his body may be healed.

Dear Saints of God: We still rejoice to know that Jesus saves us and keeps us from sin, and we are following our blessed Savior, and praise the dear Lord, he knoweth them that are his. We began meeting at this place the 13th. Held one week. It was a grand victory on the Lord’s side. There were ten seeking justification, who we believe received the desire of their hearts. The dear Lord saw fit to bring us down with the Mumps while here. But praise God, all things work together for the good of them that serve the Lord. We just left it in the hands of the Lord and he brought us through all right. On last Lord’s day the saints went to Atwood, Kan. where seventeen were buried with Christ in baptism, and arose to walk in newness of life. May the Lord keep them abounding, and may they go on unto perfection, and show to the world that they will hereafter live out what they professed to the world on that solemn occasion. I return home now to get ready to attend the camp meeting, the Lord willing. Pray for me.

Dear Brethren: The meeting at Stanley, commenced the 2d and closed the 21st, with precious victory for the Lord. It was a precious feast from first to last, much good was accomplished. Many were convicted of the Lord, and we are praying, that they may be converted to God. Six were blessedly saved in him, all of whom but two went on unto perfection and received the experience of perfection in holiness. We believe others will be saved soon. People came to the meetings for miles and many were won to the truth. A camp meeting is earnestly desired here in Sept. by the people. Cannot dear Bro. Warner and company, or Bro. Kilpatrick, or whomsoever the Lord sends this summer, come and hold that meeting. There were three cases of divine healing by faith; one a sister who had been an almost constant sufferer for about twenty years of several and serious complaints, was gloriously healed. Our dear child was taken with cholera infantum, was quite sick indeed for two days, but the Lord fully healed and restored him to perfect health. To God only be all the glory! Last evening we begun meeting at the U. B. meeting house, to continue two weeks the Lord willing. After that hold a few meetings in a school house about two miles further, and June 11, return to and hold a farewell meeting at Stanley, and the 12th start for the Mich. C.M.

Dear Saints: God bless you all and keep you saved from all sin. We are happy to tell you all once more that the Lord is still keeping us sweetly saved from all sin and giving us victory over all opposing elements. Praise the Lord! Since our last report we have held a number of meetings in Wood, Sandusky and Henry Co’s, O. with very good results, however not many sinners saved. Have had small attendance generally. Work principally among the saints. A few sinners have been saved and a few believers sanctified and some confusion cleared away by the blood, and the churches strengthened. Remember, my brethren, that if the fellowship of the Spirit is broken, the blood alone can restore it. It is no use to get together and talk things over and agree to drop all difficulties and then shake hands and go on, if the fellowship of the Spirit is broken. Some certainly have gotten out of line and your souls stained with sin (for the devil is always present to do his work at such times) and the blood alone will restore the fellowship. God has been grieved and a confession must be made to him. My dear brothers and sisters, see that there is not a spot or wrinkle or any such thing upon your garments. We came here yesterday, commenced meeting last night. We expect to continue, God willing, until about June 7th. Pray for the meeting here. We expect then to go to Grand Junction, Mich. to attend the camp meeting. Our address, Grand Junction, Mich. God bless you all. Amen.

Dear Saints Scattered Abroad: I am thankful I can report victory in Jesus. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses me just now. Praise the Lord! I have not reported through the Trumpet for some time, but I have not been idle. The dear Lord has been using me, and souls have been saved. To him be all the glory. I have been laboring in Lenawee Co., and then came to this place. I will attend the Johnstown grove meeting, the Lord willing, and then work toward the Grand Junction camp meeting. The saints near Adrian Mich., very much desire a tabernacle meeting directly after the Grand Junction C. M. Bro. Warner is requested to be there and whosoever the Lord may lead. I would also like to mention, that the saints at Hollenberg, Kan. ever since our meeting there last winter have been making calculations on a camp meeting at that place about the last of July and the first of August. We should have mentioned it before. Bro. Moorehead has a very nice grove on his farm, and the Lord has plenty of consecrated means at that place to support a camp meeting. I believe the Lord wants a camp meeting at that place. Let all the saints in the West pray over it, and all attend that can. Hollenberg is in Washington Co., Kan. on the St Joe and & Grand Island R. R., and close to the B. & M. R. R.

Carthage, Mo., May 36, 1893.

Dear Saints: Our last report was at Pittsburg, Kan. From there we went to Half Way, Mo. We found a few here who were contending for the faith which was delivered to the saints. This place was thoroughly drunken on the wine of Babylon, and the devil stirred up the people to close the school house when they heard we were coming, and we had to hold meetings from the first in private houses. We had fair attendance most of the time, but with a shifting congregation, not many coming more than once or twice. One dear soul who had lost the joyful experience of salvation got back to Father’s house. Several who had been prejudiced against the truth were convinced that it was the only way, but through fear of public opinion they were kept from making the sacrifice. The little church was much strengthened and settled. May the dear Lord keep them firm, shining as lights amidst the awful darkness around them. From there we went to Bolivar, Mo. where we held a few meetings in the court house. But people at this place are joined to their idols. Few came out and seldom any of them came the second time. From here we had some earnest calls to the east and south east of us, but none were able to send means to bear our expenses to them, and we did not have money of our own, so were obliged to pass them by at present, hoping it may be the will of God that we visit those places in the future. We came to Carthage, where Brother Bolds and company are having a glorious tabernacle meeting. We are praising God for the privilege of meeting these dear workers of the Lord, and the saints here, whom we had never before met. We are ready to go where the Lord sends. If any desire our labors, let them address us at Carthage, Mo.

Yours in the love and fellowship of the gospel,

Dear Saints of the Living God Greeting: We are rejoicing to day that we are saved with an everlasting salvation, and our souls joyful in glory. Praise the dear Lord! Since our last report, we have been in the blessed work of pointing lost souls to the Lamb of God, that takes away all our sins and sanctifies our nature. Praise the Lord! We went to Atwood some time ago, held meeting there for nearly three weeks. Some dear souls were saved and made happy in a Savior’s love. We went from there to Cornell, where we held one week’s meeting, and God was with us from beginning to end. Several were saved, most of whom went with us to Atwood yesterday, Lord’s day, and met the dear saints at that place. Had meeting in the afternoon, followed by the ordinance of baptism. Our souls were made to rejoice as seventeen dear ones sank beneath the waves, and our humble prayer to Almighty God is that they may all be kept under the cleansing blood of Christ, rising higher and higher in the knowledge of God and mounting up as on eagle’s wings of faith; for we walk by faith and not by sight. We wish to say that we have been burdened for some time for the work in the West along the coast states, especially for Oregon and Washington. We have been praying God to hasten workers to that place, and for some time felt sure the call would be to some one else besides myself; but of late I have felt impressed that the Lord wants us to go. So unless we we feel special leadings to the contrary we will go as soon as the Lord furnishes the necessary means. If we go we trust we shall be able to start by the last of June. We will trust the Lord to lead some of his anointed ones to help in singing and preaching the word.

Dear Bro. Phillips has been with us for the last month and labored faithfully for the salvation of precious souls, and God has used him to His glory in the preaching of his word with the power of the Holy Ghost. We bade him farewell on last evening, as he expects to return home soon. May the Lord ever keep him filled with glory and consecrated to the Master’s work. If any of the workers come near Atwood, Kan. or Cornell, Neb. be sure to visit there. Any one wishing to correspond with the saints at Cornell, address Bro. J. A. Taylor. Dear ones, pray for us and the work in the west. We have not been in the work long but we are trusting the Lord for wisdom and strength. Praise the Lord, he supplies all our needs according to his riches in glory.

Dear Saints: May the dear Lord abundantly bless you all and keep you abounding in his love. I have felt impressed to write and tell what great things the God of love and Father of mercies has done for me. He has delivered me out of the enemy’s hand. Glory to God! I can now serve him in righteousness and holiness all the days of my life. Being justified by faith I have peace with God. Hallelujah! I know my sins are all pardoned and my name is written in the Lamb’s book of life. Glory to God forever! It is grand and blessed to know our sins are all blotted out; but it is yet more blessed to know we have the last remains of sin destroyed out of our hearts. Oh I do praise the dear Lord for crucifying the old body of sin. I now can praise him out of a pure heart. I am dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God. “’Tis finished, my salvation.” To God be all the glory. I love the Lord above everything else. He saves me from all my idols and sets me free. Oh what a wonderful Savior we have, one that can heal both soul and body! He raised me up off of the bed of affliction after I had lain there over four years. Glory! glory! glory! I cannot keep still when I think what great things he has done for me. Oh dear saints, magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt his name together.

Dear Beloved Saints and Gospel Trumpet Readers: I wish to glorify God by testifying through this paper of the mighty power of God to heal the body as well as the soul. Hallelujah to Jesus forever and ever! Amen. Oh! bless the Lord, oh, my soul, and forget not all his benefits! Surely, surely God has been precious to me, such an unworthy creature as I am. How I love him and I shall continue to praise his dear name. His praise shall be continually in my mouth, for although I pass through deep waters he is ever by my side. He forgiveth all my iniquities, he healeth all my diseases, so that my strength is renewed like the eagle’s, and like David I feel that with my God I can run through a troop and leap over a wall. Oh, glory, glory be to Jesus forever and ever! Six years ago the first of next month I went deaf in my left ear, caused by a cold gathering. At the time I doctored for it, but everything failed and I found myself unable to hear anything with that ear, and it has been quite a bother to me ever since as those who are acquainted with me will know. About four years ago I consulted Dr. Gleason, one of the best ear doctors in the world. He said my case was doubtful, but thought I might be cured if I attended to it at once, but would not do anything for me without my giving ten dollars for the first operation in advance, but God showed me that I should not do so. And so I have been waiting for God to heal me ever since. Three times I had hands laid on me, but each time my faith could not grasp the promise, but I really believe it was not God’s time to heal, but I have always believed the time would come when he would restore my hearing. Well, praise God, the time has come. Last Sunday afternoon, after our second meeting. I went into my room and laid down on a couch and as my ear was hurting me somewhat I began to talk to the Lord about it and this scripture came to me, “If ye abide in me and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will and it shall be done.” So I said, Lord, I am abiding in you, so now heal me and I will glorify you for it as long as I live. Then this scripture came to me, “If we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us, and if we know that he hear us, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.” So I said, Lord, I ask in your name and I know that you hear and answer my petition. I then fully trusted Jesus in spite of the whispers of Satan, and the next morning I awoke with my hearing. Praise God forever! I am healed and shall glorify him forever for his wonderful goodness to me. I am fully saved this morning and kept by his almighty power.

Your unworthy servant,

W. J. Henry.

OUR MISSION.

_____

To all who Love the Precious Word of Life, Greeting. In the last three verses of the gospel by Matthew we read, “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Oh what precious words are these to every true disciple of Christ! He comes and speaks, and as we have learned to trust and love him through a precious every-day acquaintance and fellowship with Him, all doubts and fears of human weakness or insufficiency, or earthly power, or lions in the way, will quickly vanish when we know that he has all power both in heaven and in earth, and we are completely subject to His power in all things. And we as obedient loving children gladly hear his command, Go ye therefore, no matter how far, nor how great the sacrifice we must make, nor the kind or condition of the people of the nations to whom we are sent, nor the innumerable powers which will oppose us in our mission of love: having the all power both above and beneath us, of whom shall we be afraid? And as we eagerly go forth with our commission at heart and our hope fixed on the great nations of the earth, or the great sect nations safely housed in their strongholds of sect security, let us be careful that we do not run right by or right over the mightiest nation that the sun shines on in this world to day, and pass them by unnoticed and untaught in the observance of all things whatsoever Christ has commanded us to teach.

Many of the people to whom we go to teach have to be unwound or untaught of the erroneous doctrines they have already learned, and it is a slow tedious process, but those of the great nation of which we speak have not yet been polluted or established in error. Christ saw them, loved them, and commended them for that greatest of Christian virtues, — humility. He made them an example of reproof to his disciples because of their carnal spirit of rivalry concerning the position they should occupy in the Savior’s kingdom. See Matthew 18:2-6. Now this great nation of children are found every where, and there is something for every one to do in seeking after the salvation of this great nation.

Wherever God’s children gather together for worship on the Sabbath day, there should be a goodly portion of time at the first devoted to the special instruction of the children in the pure unadulterated word of God, not merely by way of preaching, but in regular class exercise under the management of some brother or sister, warm-hearted, with a genial disposition, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith; and what is good for the children and youth is just as important for the older ones. Have classes and teachers enough to accommodate all that may come. If you are backed up by the mighty power of God’s salvation in your soul you will have no trouble to interest both saint and sinner; and with God’s blessing, you will be surprised to see what an active interest it will awaken in all your worship.

Take for a lesson some topic concerning your spiritual life and salvation, then with the golden reed carefully measure it. It may take you several weeks or months perhaps, but the more you measure the better you will like it, as more and more spiritual light and knowledge will be imparted to you, and you will rejoice more and more in the rich fountain of Bible truth that will bubble up to gladden your souls every time you come together. Your ability in this precious work is not your own, but the ability of God imparted to you. Your qualification is your willingness to obey God’s command, “Go ye therefore and teach,” and while you are teaching you will be taught of the divine Spirit; and oh what precious lessons we will learn, and how our life will abound toward God!

We are also commanded to baptize these nations; and how shall we do it? We have the precious word of God unmixed and unadulterated. God says his word is truth. Now we have tried and proved it true many times, and we have it welling up in our souls continually. So with confidence we go forth to baptize the nations with the truth, and how? Shall we sprinkle a few drops of truth in a careless uncertain way among their confusion and mixture of worldly fashion, pride, show, secret societies, worldly lusts and carnality, and then imagine that by this slight sprinkling we have baptized them, and vainly hope that somehow their hearts may be cleansed by it? Oh! there is so much of this sprinkling going on every where and it only promotes the growth of confusion and unrighteousness. All glory to God for an understanding of his word! He says baptize, and that means to submerge; then we are to submerge or plunge these nations in the overwhelming truth of God’s word, that all unrighteousness might be destroyed and swept away from their hearts and minds. Oh how we do praise God that we ever received this baptism of the Holy Spirit of truth, and by it we were made free from the bondage and yoke of sin! To the willing and obedient disciple, Christ gives his most precious promise, Lo I am with you always, and in his presence there is fullness of joy. Disobedience separates us from Christ and brings with it a long train of spiritual disaster and death.

Our mission may be humble, it may seem insignificant, but let us do all to the glory of God, and do with our might what our hands find to do, and God will take care of the results. Amen.

From your saved brother, ready to do the Master’s bidding,

T. E. White.

FREE IN CHRIST.

_____

Dearly Beloved Children of God and Readers of the Gospel Trumpet, Greeting: I do thank God this beautiful morning for salvation full and free. Yes free in Christ Jesus, for whom the Son makes free is free indeed. I can truly say there is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit. For the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me tree from the law of sin and death. Oh give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endureth forever! Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy. They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in: hungry and thirsty, their souls fainted in them. Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses. And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation. O that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! Psa. 107:1-8. O praise God for all his loving kindness to me, for leading me out of the wilderness of sin, into the glorious light and liberty of the Son of God! For you take one for instance, who is lost in the wilderness and trying to find the way out, finally he sees a city on a high hill, with the lights shining out he would be very foolish, if he did not make some effort to get out of there, but stay in there and starve and finally die. O praise God! He would be glad to flee to the city for refuge. Well Christ says, I am the light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. He also says to his disciples, Ye are the light of the world: a city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. So it is with the sinner that is lost in the wilderness of sin, and does not know the way out, he sees the city of God which is all lit up with the light of God. He is glad to make his escape from the wilderness of sin, into the beautiful city whose builder and maker is God, and rejoices with great joy that where as he was once lost that now he is found. For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness. O praise his name forever and ever! For who would not praise the Lord? Truly he is good and there is none other like him.

Now I will say to all that are lost in the wilderness of sin, and cannot find your way out, Flee to Christ who is the light, forsake your evil ways and turn to Christ, and live while the light holds out to burn, for soon the night will come wherein no man can see to work. Time onward moves like a river vast. Soon it will end in eternity, and the place that knew us will know us no more. And should you be ushered into eternity unprepared, awful will be your doom. O prepare to meet thy God in peace; for while will ye die, O house of Israel? I am so glad that I can say that I am the child of the King, and he satisfies all my longings and keeps me satisfied with the heavenly manna, and I can drink of the fountain that never runs dry. Yes, and that is not all. I have a well of living water in my soul, springing up into everlasting life. Amen.

Your sister, saved and sanctified wholly. Amen and amen.

SECRET SOCIETIES.

_____

Freeman, Mo.

Dear Saints of God: I will attempt to give you some of my experience in the secret society line. Paul says, Let us do what we do to the glory of God. So in this same confidence I am minded to give this experience, for the purpose of giving warning to God’s children who have been deluded into these soul-reprobating and Christ-denying institutions, of which all oath bound bodies are of the same spirit. They are of the rudiments of this world, and not after God.

The order of which I wish to speak mainly, is the so-called Farmer’s Alliance or more properly called of late Labors Union. A short time after I became converted to God this lodge work broke out here in full fire. And not having a full knowledge of God I was persuaded to join them. They claiming all the time that the foundation of their lodge was for the protection and gathering of the laboring class together against the ravages of the rich. The devil always appears wearing good names and also wearing a cloak of pretended faith n the only begotton Son of God.

It is no marvel, says Paul, for if the devil be transformed into an angel of light; so also his ministers will be transformed into ministers of righteousness. They claim to believe in God, but in works they deny him, being abominable and disobedient unto every good work. I attended lodge twice, and on each occasion, instead of harmony and peace there was confusion and every evil work. In their pretended sanctity they claim to disown all infidels, and that no one could become members except believers in God. I found this to be false, for on a test examination through the Spirit, the Lord brought me to see that the president ruling that lodge was an infidel of the wickedest spirit I ever met. And I soon found that I could not fellowship such spirits, for in searching God’s word I found that Babylon is fallen, and also God has given command for his people to come out of her and not be partakers of her sins. She (Babylon) has religion (in form such as printed prayers which are said by sinners without the least particle of God’s Spirit in it, and all of their work is of the same class or spirit), which if received by God’s children will drown them in the same perdition that drowns all ungodly men or men that know not God.

Now I wish to relate the mysterious way in which God himself delivered me from this order of corruption. After God seemed to call me out of them by the leadings of his Spirit and word, even then I seemed to halt between two opinions until God made it plain to me in a vision upon my bed, which removed all my doubts as to what God wanted me to do.

It seemed I was down in a valley or low piece of ground, and looking behind me I saw a large innumerable company of people coming four abreast and as for multitude it seemed there was no end, and looking before me saw a large house on the top of the hill, into which this great company was entering, both small and great. I was constrained to ask the passers by what it meant, to which I received in reply that the Alliance was holding meeting up there, and it seemed to me that something prompted me to go up and enter. Upon entering I seemed to see every low down person I knew, and of all the cursing and drunkenness that prevailed within, no tongue is able to tell. Even women in drunkenness and rage reviled and took the name of God in vain. Upon seeing these things I was made to cry out, This is no place for me, and made attempt to escape; and when they saw I was wanting to leave the room they said I could not, for there was some one going to be tried by the Alliance for disobedience. As I looked out at the door it seemed to be opened about two inches, and as I made an effort to escape, there was a power took hold upon the building and shook it from head to foundation, and even the light of the elements were shaken. Something seemed to say. This is the power of the devil. And the next thing I knew I was out of that house and going back the same way I came up. Still there was that never ending crowd of people going up to the building on the hill and I going back home.

Then I awoke and there seemed to come a warning voice to me, saying that the way to heaven is right opposite to the way the multitudes of the world are going. And the same impression came to me that came before, to come out from that lodge, which warning I obeyed.

John the Revelator says, The dragon was wroth with the woman and went to make war with the remnant of her seed which keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. So I can say that I have experienced the fulfillment of this passage. The beast has made war against me since I renounced his wickedness, for I have been stoned, and barb wire, or some other kind of wire stretched across my road coming from prayer meeting. Have been persecuted from place to place and my goods wasted by those that are professors and non professors; but in these trials I have this consolation, that the Lord says he will bring the third part through the fire, and that the Lord sits as a refiner of silver and gold. Paul says, Whom the Lord loves he chasteneth. The word also says, They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony, and they loved not their lives unto the death.

Now I will close this by saying that the only way we can be overcomers is by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimonies, keeping out from under the power or delusive elements of both sects and secret societies of every stamp or grade, and letting the judgments of God go forth unto victory against all such as turn aside to lies. I have written this as a warning to both saint and sinner.

The Lord says, “Come out from among them and be ye separate and touch not the unclean thing, and I will receive you.” May God hasten to give all his children the light of his truth in their hearts, that they may not be taken by the deceptiveness of the evil one, and that we will all be quick to obey the Lord our God in all things, and be overcomers in the end through Jesus Christ.

Dear Saints: I feel led of the Lord to add a few words again for the dear GOSPEL TRUMPET. I do praise God for such a good true holiness paper. We are out in Texas, alone, separated from any of God’s dear children, yet we are not alone, for God is with us in love and mighty power. We do pray God to send some of his flying messengers to this sinful place. Oh dear saints, pray earnestly for some one to come over and help us. I would like to have dear Bro. Willis to come if he feels led of the Lord. The people are strangers to the truth here. Husband and I are standing firm for Jesus, but we feel badly in need of some one to help us in this great battle of the Lord. We are saved to the uttermost, sanctified and satisfied. Praise the Lord forever!

Your sister under the blood,

Ellen Boone.

To all of God’s Children, Greeting: I thought it would be to the glory of God to write my testimony to the Trumpet. The Lord saved me one year ago last Nov. Oh I do praise him for a salvation that keeps me from the evils and sinful pleasures of this world! I always had a desire to do God’s will from a little boy. My dear parents used to instruct me the best they knew how according to the way they have been taught, and I joined the German Baptist or Dunker sect when quite young, and lived an up and down life, and used to think that they were the only people of God. But later in years I got dissatisfied and did not live up to all of their laws, and went to hear other sects preach, and so they expelled me from their number. So I went back in the sinful pleasures of the world: and when I first heard the word of God preached on full salvation, I accepted the word, and the Lord saved my soul. Praise be to his name! I have had severe trials, but the Lord brought me out of them all. I can realize that he shall have a tried people. The powers of darkness are great in this place. The people have rejected God’s word and his judgements are against them. Oh I do thank the Lord for delivering me from Babylon and the hands of the evil and wicked men. I ask all of God’s children to pray that I may be kept firm for him. It is only a short time here on earth that we stay, and we shall meet the blessed Savior and those that have gone before.

Your brother, saved and kept by the mighty power of God, sanctified and satisfied to live for him. Amen.

Dear Saints of the Most Holy One: I was pardoned of my sins eight years ago when a little girl, and lived according to the light that was revealed to me; yet there was a continual hungering in my soul for something more. I knew I needed something, and a year ago was told it was sanctification; but I, like many others, when it was taught to me, was not willing to receive it. In fact, I tried to hide from it and talked bitterly against it, but God in his wisdom directed that one of the saints’ prayer meetings should be held at my mother’s house, and I after listening to the brothers’ and sisters’ prayers and testimonies, resolved to give myself into the Lord’s hands, and consecrate my body, soul, friends, church relations and all. It was a hard struggle, but I felt that the eternal welfare of my soul hung in the balance. So I continued praying and consecrating, and I realized the very moment “when my all was on the altar laid,” for He sent the holy fire. I praise God that Bro’s Markwell and Willis were led to come to this neighborhood, because of the good they have done both for myself and family and friends. Since I was sanctified last Feb., I was very ill with a fever, but was healed in answer to the prayer of one of God’s holy ones. I do praise God for all this. Pray that I may seek to to do his will and not my own. May the Lord bless richly all the dear saints.

Your saved and sanctified sister,

Lillie M. Bowers.
