CHRISTIAN ADVANCEMENT.

_____

The light of THE WORD shines brighter and brighter
As wider and wider God opens my eves;

My trials and burdens seem lighter and lighter,
And fairer and fairer the heavenly prize.

The wealth of this world seems poorer and poorer,
As farther and farther it fades from my sight;

The prize of my calling seems surer and surer,
As straighter and straighter I walk in the light.

My waiting on Jesus is dearer and dearer,
As longer and longer I lie on his breast;

Without Him I’m nothing seems clearer and clearer,
And more and more sweetly in Jesus I rest.

My joy in my Savior is growing and growing,
And stronger and stronger I trust in His Word;

My peace like a river is, flowing and flowing.
And harder and harder 1 jean on the Lord.

My praise and thanksgiving is swelling and swelling,
As broader and broader
the promises prove;

The wonderful story I’m telling and telling.
And more and more sweetly I rest in His love.

THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.

_____

THESE words had much to do with the bringing about of the reformation of the sixteenth century. Martin Luther, and other spirited ministers of God were engaged in teaching students Paul’s epistle to the Romans, and he often found it difficult, and impossible to reconcile the teachings of God’s word and the doctrine of justification by faith with the doctrine and teachings of the Romish church. Especially was it impossible for him to quiet his conscience, and to bring the words of the Holy Spirit, “The just shall live by faith,” in harmony with the doctrine of works and humane merit. Although he had been brought up and educated to believe in all works, yet as he read those, lines, he foresaw something better.

But some may ask. If not by works, how are men made just. Let us now go to the word of God, and see who the just are. First, let me say, that the just are those who have become reconciled to God, which means that they have been born again; that is, of the water and Spirit. Being born of water is metephoric for Word, for faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Rom. 10:17. Now we understand by this, men in hearing the word of God are convicted of their sins. Also, you may see that they begin to have faith by hearing the word of God, which is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of thoughts and intents of the heart. Heb 4:12. By my own experience, and testimony of others, these words are utterly fulfilled when we hear the word of God declared to us by the ministers anointed by the Holy Spirit. Then we see really how the Word is piercing and sharp, and oven discerning our very thoughts, and the intents of the heart. The epistle of James says that a man that is a hearer of the Word and not a doer, is like one beholding his face in a glass; he goes away and straightway forgets what kind of a man he was. But men hearing such words as these, and seeing how plain and true, they have more faith than when sinners begin to have faith. Then they want to get right with God. So faith cometh by hearing. Now comes getting right, or just before God.

First comes repenting. Now, repenting is the act of the soul, under reproof of the Spirit, reviewing the past life so that forgiveness of sin is desired. It signifies a forsaking of sin. Let the wicked forsake his ways and the unrighteous man his thoughts, and let him return unto the Lord and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God for he will abundantly pardon. Isa. 55:7. Praise God forever!

Then comes confession. If we confess our sins, he [Christ] is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Jno. 1:9. Then by our having faith in God and believing God to be true to his Word, we get abundantly pardoned and forgiveness of sins. Then at this period we are no longer guilty, but justified or otherwise, born of water and Spirit. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Rom. 8:1. Therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Rom.5:1. Glory to his name!

Now, we have found that the just are not such as have put God under obligation to them, or gained credit at his hands for deeds done by their own power or self-righteousness. For by nature there is not a just man upon the earth that doeth good and sinneth not. Eccl. 7:20. The just are not such as are faultless and without guilt in and of themselves, or because they have so lived and labored as to have wiped out their own transgression by the deeds done in the body. Oh, no! he must be horn of the Spirit; that is, become changed through Christ in God. The just in the above passage, are such as God looks upon as just, not such as in their own inherited or acquired morality stand accepted of God. They are such as are found in Christ Jesus, not having their own righteousness which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith. Phil. 3:9. Not a legal justness or righteousness is here spoken of, but an evangelical righteousness or holiness, even the righteousness which is of faith.

Now, you see here that Jesus represented before God our race in purity, as did Adam in the creation, in purity. But as Adam fell in the garden, we are all by nature in Adam. Read Gen. 5:3 and Psa. 51:5. Now, to be accepted of God as just, we must be in Christ by a new birth and spiritual life. One of this kind is one whom the Word meant should live by faith; that is, the believing one, the new-born creature shall have, and hold spiritual life and heavenly life. As this new life comes by faith, the same is retained by faith. Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Pet. 1:5. Now faith strengthening, and our continued existence in God’s ways as by faith, we make Christ ours and become partakers of his saving merits. So we live by faith in the grace of God, and by this we have hope of life eternal. Therefore, if we live by faith in God, and pray in faith, we may expect to have our prayers answered, and have sweet communion with God. For the Word says, Let him ask in faith, nothing wavering, for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, driven with the wind and tossed. James 1:6. According to your faith, so be it unto you.

So dear readers, we see it is according to our faith that we live, and enjoy the blessings of God in this life. For the just shall live by faith. Rom 1:17. May the good Lora bless all the just, of this evening light bless throughout the earth, is the of a saved brother,

HOLINESS.

(Holiness: — Purity, piety, sacredness.)

HOLINESS, AN ATTRIBUTE OF GOD. Ex. 15:11 — Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

Lev. 11:44 — For I Am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

21:8 — Thou shalt sanctify him therefore; for he offereth the bread of thy God: he shall be holy unto thee: for I the Lord, which sanctify you, am holy.

Isa. 6:3 — And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

Rev. 4:8 — And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

HOLINESS, GOD’S THRONE AND DWELLING-PLACE. Psa. 47:8 — God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.

Isa. 57:13-15 — When thou criest, let thy companies deliver thee; but the wind shall carry them all away; vanity shall take them; but he that putteth his trust in me shall possess the land, and shall inherit my holy mountain; and shall say, Cast ye up, cast ye up, prepare the way, take up the stumblingblock out of the way of my people. For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

Zech. 2:6-13 — Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north, saith the the Lord: for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven, saith the Lord. Deliver thyself, O Zion, that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon. For thus saith the Lord of hosts: After the glory hath he sent me unto, the nations which spoiled you; for he that toucheth you, toucheth the apple of his eye. For, behold, I will shake my hand upon them, and they shall be a spoil to their servants: and ye shall know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me.

Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the Lord. And many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto thee. And the Lord shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again. Be silent, O all flesh, before the Lord: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation.

Psa. 138:6 — Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.

48:1 — Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.

Isa. 63:15 — Look down from heaven, and behold from the habitation of thy holiness and of thy glory: where is thy zeal and thy strength, the sounding of thy bowels and of thy mercies toward me? are they restrained?

GOD MUST BE WORSHIPED IN THE BEAUTY OF HOLINESS. 1 Chron. 16:29 — Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

Psa. 30:4 — Sing unto the Lord, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

HOLINESS BECOMETH GOD’S HOUSE. Psa. 93:5 — Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O Lord, forever.

Tit. 2:3 — The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things.

WHAT IS GOD’S HOUSE? HEB. 3:1-6 — Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; who was faithful to him that appointed him, even as Moses was faithful in all his house. For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honor than the house. For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God. And Moses verily was faithful in all his house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after; but Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.

1 Tim. 3:15 — But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

THE CHURCH CALLED A MOUNTAIN OF HOLINESS. Jer. 31:23 — Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; As yet they shall use this speech in the land of Judah and in the cities thereof, when I shall bring again their captivity; the Lord bless thee, O habitation of justice, and mountain of holiness.

Zech. 8:3 — Thus saith the Lord: I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called A city of truth; and a mountain of the Lord of hosts, The holy mountain.

Obad. 17 — But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.

Isa. 65:25 — The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent’s meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the Lord.

Gal. 4:25, 26 — For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

Heb. 12:22, 23 — But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect.

BABYLON CALLED A DESTROYING mOUNTAIN. Jer. 51:25 — Behold, I am against thee, O destroying mountain, saith the Lord, which destroyest all the earth: and I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and roll thee down from the rocks, and will make thee a burnt mountain.

GOD speaks IN HOLINESS. Psa. 60:6 — God hath spoken in his holiness; I will rejoice, I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth.

Jer. 23:9 — Mine heart within me is broken because of the prophets; all my bones shake: I am like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine hath overcome, because of the Lord, and because of the words of his holiness.

THE WAY OF HOLINESS. Isa. 35:8-10 — And a highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein. No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there, and the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

THE COURTS OF GOD’S HOLINESS. Isa. 62:8, 9 — The Lord hath sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies; and the sons of the stranger shall not drink thy wine, for the which thou hast labored: but they that have gathered it, shall eat it, and praise the Lord; and they that have brought it together shall drink it in the courts of my holiness.

THE PEOPLE OF GOD’S HOLINESS. Isa. 63:18 — The people of thy holiness have possessed it but a little while: our adversaries have trodden down thy sanctuary.

62:12 — And they shall call them, The holy people, the redeemed of the Lord: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A city not forsaken.

Deut. 26:18, 19 — And the Lord hath avouched thee this day to be his peculiar people, as he hath promised thee, and that thou shouldest keep all his commandments; and to make thee high above all nations which he hath made, in praise, and in name, and in honor; and that thou mayest be an holy people unto the Lord thy God, as he hath spoken.

1Pet. 2:9 — But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

CALLED UNTO HOLINESS. Heb. 12:14 — Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.

1 Pet. 1:15 — But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation.

1 Thess. 4:7 — For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

Luke 1:75 — In holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.

PARTAKERS OF HIS HOLINESS. Heb. 12:10 — For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

HOLINESS TO BE PERFECTED. 2 Cor. 7:1 — Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

UNBLAMEABLE IN HOLINESS. 1 Thess. 3:13 — To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.

FRUIT UNTO HOLINESS. Rom. 6:19-22 — I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

Bronson, Mich.

Dear Saints: I will write my testimony for the first time. I am glad I have found Jesus an everlasting salvation to my soul. I realize that I am standing upon a sure foundation that cannot be moved, and reign in this life, and I give God all the glory. I love to read his holy Word. I had been living in sectism for fourteen years, but did not know what salvation was until I heard the evening light preached four years ago in April. Jesus keeps me free from sin, and is my physician; he has healed me several times, and also my family. Pray for me and family. Your sister saved,

Cenora Zimmerman.

WATONGA, OKLA.

Dear Saints: I do praise God for real victory over the world, the flesh, and the devil, and that I do enjoy this blessed uttermost salvation. I realize more and more that the things I possess are not my own, and that I am bought with a price. I am fully consecrated to glorify God in my body and in my spirit which are his. Praise his name! We have prayer meeting three times a week. We are few in number, but the Lord meets with us. Bless the Lord! This way is growing brighter and better as I learn more of what his will is, and walk in it. Pray that the Lord may always have his way with me to the salvation of souls. Your saved brother, walking in the light,

O. P. Allen.

GET ready for the Grand Junction camp meeting, June 11-20.

SPECIAL BOOK OFFER.

UNTIL April 15, when cash to the amount of $3.00 or more is sent for books to be sent by freight, we will sell any books that we publish here for one-half the regular retail price. This offer brings some of them below cost price, and will not continue longer than the appointed time. So now is your time to buy books. But this offer does not include Bibles and other books not published here.

TRACTS BY THE POUND.

We have 300 0oo tracts for sale, English and German, from one to seventy pages, which we offer until April 15, to send by freight, at only 12 cts. a pound. This includes any of our tracts which have been selling for 5 cts. each, or less. No orders sent at this price unless $2 00 worth or more are ordered, with cash. In these special offers, the purchaser is to pay freight charges. Get a box of tracts to distribute on your way to camp and grove meetings in cities, place in depots, etc., and God will bless your labors. We hope to be able by the above stated time, to report the payment of the debt in full, with also an immense amount of literature sent out to sow good seed beside all waters.

Bro. H. C. Moon, McKinley, Okla., writes us that he is saved in Jesus. Has a large family of small children; they are very much in need of help. Old clothes or partly worn shoes, or whatever could be spared would be very thankfully received. In the name of Jesus, let such as can, aid the brother and his little ones, and verily you shall not lose your reward.

Bro. S. P. Strang writes us from So. Chicago, Ill., “I can report perfect victory in my soul. Praise the Lord! I am here holding meetings. God is working with the people. Some have come to the Lord, others under conviction. One lady renounced her sect last night. She was Adventist. She says she will walk in the light. Another man and his wife, prominent members of the Congregational sect, praised God for the light, and said they would walk in it. God bless them.”

A BROTHER writes us from England, asking an expression from us about holy people joining Insurance Companies, or Burial clubs. The latter are described as follows: The people join, themselves together in a club, and each pay something weekly, and when one of the family dies, their funeral expenses are drawn from the general fund. Now we say, to be yoked up in any such association is a thing positively forbidden in the word of God. “Be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers. Wherefore, come out from among them, and be ye separate.” Such conduct throws the imputation in the face of God, that he is not able to provide all things needed for his children. Jesus said, “Let the dead bury their dead.” So we need not join hands with sinners, and pay the Lord’s money to bury them, whether they are rich or poor, in order to insure the means of our burial. God’s people are a peculiar people, separate from the nations of sinners, and their Father supplies all their needs.

WE ARE richly blessed of the Lord in our new little cottage. The Lord is helping us with our writing. We arise and begin the day’s work at four o’clock, with much prayer and supplication to God for wisdom, and inspiration of the holy Spirit. Our first work in our new office is a little work on Salvation. The Lord is helping us to publish salvation in the clear light of his Word. The tract will contain nearly a hundred pages. It will soon be ready for the press.

We see no end to the glorious lines of present truth which the Lord will have us send forth. We expect soon to resume writing on the work, “The Cleansing of the Sanctuary.” We have already written 400 pages for the same. We ask the prayers of all God’s dear saints, that we may be blessed with heavenly wisdom, and good speed in sending forth heaven’s burning truth.

As we have gathered up and placed in order our library, and expect to use it more in the future than heretofore, we would say, quite a number of books are missing. If any of the brethren who have borrowed books, have finished reading them, we would be thankful if they would return the same.

D.S. W.

THE LORD BE PRAISED!

ON the day of fasting and prayer, for the publishing work, during the week of special prayer, at the beginning of last month, the Trumpet family spent the day inspecial communion with the Lord for his blessings upon the work, and the bills and accounts of indebtedness were read and prayerfully committed to the Lord for payment, and removal of the same. The whole amount of indebtedness being $1,609.00. The orders for books, tracts, papers, etc. came in abundance, and the Lord moved many to send in their “mites” and donations to help along the work, and we are, by the help of the Lord, enabled to pay $680 60 for paper, postage, fuel and other office expenses during the month, also $669 41 on the indebtedness, leaving $939 59 yet due. We are truly thankful to God for this, and to the dear ones who are aiding in the work by their prayers and means, and feel that the time is near at hand when the last penny of it will be paid. We have about 5 000 regular subscribers to the Trumpet, of which about 2,500 pay for it, while we publish from 5 000 to 20.000 copies each week, according to the demand for distribution.

Having a good stock of books and tracts on hand, we make a special cash offer in order to pay the debt, and get the truth before the people.

HEALED OF A CANCEROUS TUMOR.

_____

472 N. Beaudry Ave., Los Angeles, Cal., Feb. 5, 1895.

I wish to tell of a wonderful work that God has done for me in healing my body. I have been troubled with a cancerous tumor, which has been on my breast for more than twelve years. For a number of months it has been running. About a month ago a sister from San Diego called upon me, and insisted that I should take my case to the Lord for healing. She appointed an hour when she expected to be at home, and would make it known to the church, and all would join in prayer at that time. Accordingly, I went to my room at the appointed time, and poured out my soul to God and read his promises. I felt an unusual sensation upon my body, and realized the presence of God in a wonderful manner. The Holy Spirit witnessed to my heart that the work was done. From that time I began to notice a gradual disappearance of my affliction, and to day there is but a small scab left. I do praise and magnify God for his glorious power to heal, through faith in Jesus. My soul has been wonderfully refreshed by the divine touch of my body. Your brother in Christ,

Reuren Phillips.

IN ANSWER TO PRAYER.

Eagleville, Tenn. Feb. 19, 1895.

Dear Trumpet Family: I feel led by the Spirit to write a few lines, this day being my birthday. I am eighty- two years old. I enjoy the Trumpet so much. I am always glad to get it. Please send me some tracts on faith and sanctification. I want to distribute some in this place. Since I was healed of my several diseases, it has been a great wonder in this community; the like has never been heard of before, so I would like to throw a little light on the subject.

I send the testimony of Jane Williams (colored). She had a cancerous tumor; the doctor said she would die. She got me to write to you. and she has gotten well, and is praising God. Please remember me in your prayers. Your sister in Christ.

A LETTER FROM THE HOLY LAND.

_____

(… … … … … ..difa..aid.)

Jerusalem, Palestine, Nov. 2, 1894.

Dear Sisters Zumwalt, Cora, Cornwall, Hatch, Byers, and all you dear people: I send you glad greetings from this place. Am sure you will rejoice with me in all the goodness and grace of God in bringing me safely through. Cannot tell you of all his goodness to me, and how he has blest me in soul and body. I trust this may find you all well, and prosperous in the work of the Lord. I have so often thought of you and of your beautiful Christian lives and zeal in the Lord’s work, and wish you were all right here in this country. It seems so long since I have had any word from California; have not had any letter from any one since I left New York. I wrote to Sister Zumvalt while there, but did not get any answer, but hope you will write as soon as this reaches you, and let me know how it is with you all, and when you expect to come to Jerusalem.

I have been a long time on the way here; left Los Angeles on the 18th of July, and reached here on the 8th of October; but I made some long stoppings on the way; was one week in Chicago, three weeks in Ohio, and the same length of time, in New York; one week in London, and four days in Port Said, and came all the way I could by water, so that it took me a long time to get through. But thank God, I am through at last, and feel well satisfied that he called me to this place. I am feeling so well and happy; expect to make this earthly Jerusalem my home while on earth, then by the grace of God expect to spend my eternity in the heavenly Jerusalem.

There is much I want to tell you, about the goodness of God to me, about this place and people and my prospects for work, and about some experiences I had on my way here. Over and over I feel like saying, “Oh how good the Lord has been to me!” Wish I could just talk with you and tell you so much more than I can in this letter. I can only skim over and just give you a little account of some things. As soon as I started on this journey I felt so blest of God in soul and body; seemed to have no temptations or dark hours until just a few days before I left New York. Then there came before me very plainly an awful spell of seasickness which I had a good many years ago on the Atlantic, and the tempter promised me a repetition of the same. As I thought of it a shudder came over me. I had no thought of turning back from the trip at all, but did feel a dread of an awful spell of sea sickness. So I got my Bible and down on my knees, and after prayer opened right to these words: “When thou passest through the waters I will be with thee.” Cannot tell you what comfort those words brought

Page 3

to me. I said, that is enough for me, and so the thought and fear of sea sickness was banished from my mind.

On Sept. 8th, I got on board a steamer bound for Liverpool, about eight hundred or more passengers on board. It was very affecting to witness the sad farewells that were exchanged at the landing; some bidding farewell for a time, others for forever. As we pushed out to sea, I watched the last object visible of my native land until it was just vanishing out of sight, then waved a final farewell to my dearly loved native country, and turned my face towards Jerusalem; and as I thought of my call and mission there I began to sing, “Far away ye billows bear me; lovely native land farewell.” We were six days crossing the ocean, and I did have a few days of seasickness, but how wonderfully the good Lord did verify his Word to me. He was with me, and it seemed like he opened heaven to my soul. For hours there passed before me such scenes of glory and blessedness as I cannot describe.

I was in London one week, and had expected to go from there overland through France and Italy; but cholera was so bad in France that I could not go that way without danger of being quarantined. So I left London on a steamer bound for Port Said, Egypt. Was nearly two weeks on the way; had another spell of seasickness on the Bay of Biscay, but the good Lord was with me, and the sickness did me much good. I felt much better after it. The rest of the journey was very pleasant. I did much enjoy the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean sea, so smooth and pleasant. We landed at the island of Malta for six hours. It was a delightful place, and a company of us went on shore for several hours. After returning I read the account of St. Paul’s shipwreck and experience with a viper there. Further on we could see very plainly some of northern coast of Africa, and on the other side, the island of Crete, with its rocky, hilly surface. I reached Port Said just one hour too late for the steamer to Jaffa, so had to stay there four days. While there, I was much interested in the very strange looking place and people, and tried to use what little Arabic I could in telling them about “ALLAH.” I have had no teacher in my study of the Arabic language, but the good Lord has so helped me that I can converse quite a little and be understood by the natives.

I was glad when Saturday evening came and found me on board an Austrian steamer bound for Jaffa. It was a lovely moonlight night and the water so smooth and beautiful. I was up until after midnight and up before day the next morning, longing to catch the first glimpse of the Holy Land. How I did enjoy that trip! Sabbath morning we reached Jaffa and were soon on land, and I was directed to a German hotel kept by a Christian. He had each one of his rooms named after some one of the tribes of Israel. He put me in the tribe of Levi. Was so glad to get alone in that room where I could commune with God and read his Word, and think and wonder at his goodness to me. The next morning I was awakened early by a flood of music at my window. It was a multitude of sweet singing birds in the fig and mulberry trees right at my window. My heart, and soul, and tongue joined in with them, and my song was, “Glory to God in the highest!” At breakfast I had some milk and honey. I thought how much better that was than the leeks and onions I had eaten in Egypt. How much better things the Lord has for his children than the world has. There I visited the house of “Simon the tanner,” and from the top of that house looked out over the blue sea with my Bible in hand, and thought of the wonderful vision of Peter in that place.

At three P. M. I was on board a train bound for Jerusalem. Was much interested in all the scenery all the way. I thought of the blessed feet that had often walked over that hard, stony ground; yes, precious feet, bruised and mangled with the stones and nails of earth. What a privilege it is to kiss the ground where they have been! When I saw how “the mountains are round about Jerusalem,” I was amazed. Such immense mountains just filled and packed with the hardest rock. How secure are the people of God! for we read in Psalms, “As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about his people henceforth and forever.” It was just sunset when the train reached the city of Jerusalem, and oh how beautiful it looked to me at that time! Since then I have seen more of the dark side of Jerusalem. The awful poverty and suffering there is among the many poor ones. My heart has been touched as never before for these poor suffering ones. Am so thankful for good health, so I can go into places of disease and suffering.

But the climate here is very fatal to some. Since I came two American missionaries have died here, and two more are very sick. One will likely die soon. Much as I would like to see missionaries here from my own native land, yet I would not dare to urge anyone to come unless surely called of God. There are hardships here to go through with which a weak or sickly body could not bear up under unless specially called of God, and supported by him. There are very many religious denominations represented here. One class who seem to me much like your people. They live on the wall of the city. I like them very much; they are such good Christians. I told them about you, but they say that there is not a class of Christians on earth like them; that they are different from all others. As yet, I have not attended any of their meetings, and so do not know just what they teach, but I intend to go to their meetings next Sabbath — to morrow. I cannot tell you how I felt when permitted to visit the sacred places of Gethsemane, Calvary, and Mt. Olivet. I got down and kissed the ground.

I am glad you pray for me, and want to be remembered in love to all your people and others you see that I know. Will be very glad to get letters from any, or all of you. Lovingly yours in Jesus,

Josephine Cowgill,

In care of American Consul.

East Liverpool, O., Feb. 23, 1895.

Dear Saints: Let us praise and exalt the Lord for his wonderful works to the children of men, and especially to those of a clean heart. The meeting at Smithfield, O. was a wonderful victory for the truth. It only lasted eight days on account of a union meeting of five sects which had been previously announced. Then we went four miles east to a school house where we continued one week. Five sought pardon, and three a pure heart, and I believe they all received the desire of their heart. They with Brother and Sister Cole, formerly of Colorado, have started regular meetings. Some of us expect to return in a few weeks and hold another meeting near there. We returned home day before yesterday. Two consecrations here that evening. Bro’s Roe and Cheatham are holding meetings at Industry, Pa., ten miles up the river, where souls are being saved. Bro. Tubbs returned to Blanco, Pa. Let us pray the Lord of the harvest to send forth more laborers, for the harvest is truly ripe; the Bridegroom is at the door.

G. T. Clayton and Co-workers.

Tekonsha, Mich., Feb. 22, 1895.

To all the Saints, Greeting: To day finds us saved, and praising the Lord. When we reported last we were at Richland, Mich. We held ten meetings in the town hall, and the sectarians became so enraged that they influenced the town board, and they shut the house against us.

We feel that some seed that was sown there fell on good ground. From there we went back to Clover- dale and held one week’s meeting in the Sprague school house. Not any saved, but a good seed-sowing time. The dear people endorsed the truth. Sunday, the 17th, we went to the Schultz school house and had meeting, and four precious souls came to the altar for the second work, and received it. Bless the dear Lord! He “says, Ask, and ye shall receive; seek, and ye shall find.” Tuesday, 19th, we came to this place in the name of Jesus. Dear Bro. Shrontz took us overland from his place twenty-three miles to Battle Creek. Took train to Marshall, then came nine miles to this place, and commenced meeting last night in the name of the Lord. Pray much for us, that we may be kept humble at Jesus’ feet, doing his will. Your brother in the one body,

Leroy Sheldon and Co.

Galatia, Ill., Feb. 27, 1895.

Dear Saints of God: Have closed a meeting at this place. I preached in a large hall the people rented for me. The meeting lasted four weeks. Nine sanctified, and three justified. Opposition in this little town at the beginning was very strong, as Babylon is divided up into three bodies, Methodist, Baptist, and Presbyterian. Their meeting houses are all so close together that I think they could all sing the same song at the same time together. They all hold prayer meeting on the same night, and, notwithstanding the opposition among themselves, when we begun meeting in the name of the Lord, they all set themselves together against us; but praise the Lord for victory over all the power of the enemy. If a company of workers could come to this place this spring and hold a meeting, great good could be done, no doubt, for the people are reading the Bible, and studying over the things they have heard. Several have left sectism, and are seeking a pure heart. May the dear Lord give them the second benefit, that they may be able to stand true to God against all the power of the enemy. I will begin meeting to night at Cedarpoint school house, two miles north of here. Several calls ahead in this country, and no one to help me only my wife. We need about two good altar workers to sing and do altar work. Several towns in this country are now ready to receive the truth. Brethren, pray for us, that we may keep in the order of the Lord.

Sidney, O., Feb. 26, 1895.

Dear Trumpet Readers: God bless you all. Amen. After the meeting at Payne, O. I went to Columbia City, Ind. in company with Bro. G. W. Howard and wife, and for want of a more convenient place, we commenced meeting in a private house under very unfavorable circumstances; yet our God was with us in power and the Lord began to manifest some things which have been a hindrance to the cause of God ever since there has been any professing out in the evening light. Well, thanks be to God. All who were willing to confess their wrongs we have reason to believe got out of the snare of the devil, and we hope the Lord will give them wisdom to keep out. We are sorry that some were so unwise as to cling to the wrong until they were blown overboard by the power of God through his Word. Several dear brethren from other localities attended the meetings and were established in Christ. We went from thence to Brock, O. Here as well as in the former place, Satan had been trying to blot out and destroy the work of God, but the good Lord finally exposed his subtle workings to the understanding of the saints, and they renounced the devil and his works and stepped out clear for God. There were a few conversions, all children except one. May God bless the saints at Brock and teach them to drink into the one spirit, that they may keep in the one body and in the love of God. Pray for us, brethren, and the meeting near Sidney, O.

Sidney, Ohio, Feb. 26, 1895.

Dear Brethren: May the peace of God that passeth understanding keep your hearts and minds in Christ. Amen. I left home Feb. 6, for Rockford, O., where I found Brother Husted and wife engaged in a meeting which had been going on a few nights in the town hall, which we continued for several days in company with them. Congregations were small. Some gave good attention to the Word. Rockford is surely a modern Sodom. No one would yield to the Spirit. It is to be hoped that there will be a harvesting time in the near future. The immediate fruitfulness of the meeting was somewhat hindered by some things known to God. From Rockford we went to Wiltshire, O. and met four times with the church there, and God blessed the Word to the good of the church. One consecration for sanctification, and one poor sinner knelt for pardon, but for some cause did not reach the desired haven. May God bless and save the dear man. The church at Willshire have had some trouble for some time past on account of some, who for lack of knowledge, have been holding on to parties who have been repeatedly admonished and have proved themselves heretical in doctrine, and still refuse to yield, and this has had a tendency to cause division. Those who have acted thus unwise say, “We do not take him into full fellowship, but partially.” May God help them to see the snare and deception of the devil. When talked to they would say “The preachers preach, ‘see eye to eye,’ but they are divided.” Now I say this for their good. Such talk is confusion and false. From Willshire I came to Brock, O., where Bro’s A. J. Kilpatrick and Geo. Howard were holding a meeting, and from there to this place a few days later. Bro. Husted is with us. Pray for us and the work. I am as ever yours and Christ’s, all on the altar, sanctified, made white and tried,

J. N. Howard.

West Monterey, Pa., Feb. 25, 1895.

Dear Saints of God: We are happy to report to you victory in Jesus’ name. Since we last reported we have been constantly in the work for the Master. Held a two weeks meeting at Cochran’s Mills, which was a victory for God. Then held a few meetings at the churches in Indiana Co. Found them in good condition. We then moved on to Burnside, Clearfield Co. Began meeting there Jan. 3o. This was a new field, where the evening light was never preached. But the people had received enough truth at the Smithport camp meeting last fall to make them prejudiced against us. Nevertheless, we opened the battle with victory for God. There was a class of M. P’s at this place professing holiness. Their preacher attended almost every night. But we soon found him possessed of a picking, fault finding spirit, which we exposed. We found the preacher and his class void of Bible salvation, except a few who walked in the light of God. There were a few saved in this meeting, and God raised up a little church who will hold weekly prayer-meetings. A few days before the meeting closed, we were called upon to visit a sick lady who lived in a little town four miles east. She felt it was the will of the Lord to heal her. After bringing her through a testing consecration, and enquiring of Father his will, we proceeded to anoint her and lay on hands in the name of Jesus Christ. The power of God wonderfully filled the room and the Spirit witnessed to the healing. Those present wept and cried aloud. Praise God! This opened the way for meeting at that place. If the Lord wills, we will return to that field next spring with a tabernacle. We are now here in the assembly meeting which is a feast to our soul.

Pray for us. Yours in perfect love.

New Pittsburg, Ind., Feb. 25, 1895.

Dear Trumpet Readers and Saints: I am truly glad to report peace in my soul from all sin and depravity. After Bro. Warren and I returned from Iowa, I remained at home one week, then took train for Monitor, Ind., where I held five meetings in a U. B. house, which had a good effect upon the people. May God bless and keep dear Bro. Weidner in the true faith of the gospel, and fully save his dear family who so cheerfully cared for us. We hope to hold another meeting at that place in the near future. I then came to Castine, O. and held two meetings in town at this place. My wife joined me in the work. We then moved to the Township house, about three miles in the country, where we continued meeting about four weeks with wonderful interest. Bro. Warren helped in this meeting about two weeks, then left to commence the New Pittsburg meeting. We also had help from Clark county. Bro. George Howard was with us one night and spoke unto us the truth, and then went to Brock, O., and returned again at the close of the meeting and would preach Sunday, 24th, at 1.30 A. M., and at night also. We had a most wonderful ordinance meeting in which thirty-three dear souls took part, and were blessed in their souls. May God richly bless and reward the dear people who supplied our needs. I think about ten or twelve were made free in their souls. We are now at the assembly meeting near New Pittsburg, and, thank God, souls are coming to Christ. Four at the altar last night, and seven or eight stood up for prayers. Brethren, pray for us, that we may be kept humble and useful in Him. We remain your brethren in the one body of Christ,

Dear Brothers and Sisters: I now write my testimony for the first time to the Trumpet. I was saved last April, the Lord giving me a free and full salvation. He came to me in the still hours of the night, and I could not rest until I made my peace with God. My wife and I were alone, and no one to pray for me, my wife not being saved at that time. But thank God, she gave her heart to him a few nights after, and we are both trusting in the Lord. Pray for us that we may ever be found following in the footsteps of Jesus,

QUESTIONS ANSWERED.

What must I do to be saved?

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Rom. 10:9.

Repent ye, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. Acts 3:19.

Can a man be saved without baptism?

Yes. Baptism is the answering of a good conscience toward Go. 1 Pet. 3:21. It is a command of God. Matt. 28:19. It is never to be administered until a person becomes a child of God, through repentance and believing the gospel. It is sometimes administered after conversion, before the receiving of the Holy Ghost. Read Acts 8:14-17. It is sometimes not administered until after the receiving of the Holy Ghost, or sanctification. “Can any man forbid water that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.” Acts 10:47, 48.

Will a man be lost that has been baptized?

Yes, if he commits sin, and does not repent of it. He that committeth sin is of the devil. 1 Jno. 3:8. Read Eze. 33:12.

Can a man be saved without repentance?

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Luke 13:5.

Will repentance and faith save a man?

Yes: Acts 16:30, when the jailor said, “What must I do to be saved?” Paul said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” Here was one who had seen the power of God manifested, and it sent conviction to his heart, and he came with a humble heart of repentance, willing to do anything in order to be saved, and when he fell down before Paul and Silas, they saw that he came with repentance, and willing to forsake all, or do anything in order to be saved, and in that condition he had only to have faith in the Lord Jesus, and believe on him, and he would be saved.

What constitutes faith?

Faith in God, is unwavering confidence in his word; it is believing God. Is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Heb. 11:1.

Will repentance alone save?

No: Bible repentance is sorrow for sin, with a determination to forsake sin, and obey God; but a person at this point may fail to bring forth the fruits of repentance, or to exercise the faith necessary, and by thus failing to believe the promises of God true in his own case, he fails to receive a work of grace in the soul. Neither will faith alone save, but must be exercised with Bible repentance. Devils believe and tremble, Jas. 2:19, but they do not bring forth fruits of repentance.

Was the thief on the cross saved without baptism?

Yes: he met the conditions of God’s word as far as was possible for him to do, and that is all God requires of anyone. Read Matt. 20:9.

Can a man be saved without obeying the gospel?

No: the command is, Repent, and believe the gospel. Mark 1:15. Neither is there salvation in any other. Acts. 4:12.

What is the gospel?

It is the Word, and teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ, which is “the power of God unto salvation.” Rom, 1:16.

Why was Jesus called the “Son of David,” “Son of Joseph,” “Son of God,” “Son of man.”

He was called the Son of David, because in the flesh he was a descendant from the household of David. See Matt. 1:1-16. He was called the Son of Joseph, because Joseph was the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Matt. 1:16-21. The Son of God, because his natural birth was of heavenly conception. Matt. 1:20. The Son of man, because after being begotten of God, he was born of woman by a natural birth. Read Heb. 2:14-16.

What does the word canticle mean? which book of the Bible? .

Canticle means a song. When used in reference to the Scriptures it means “the Songs of Solomon,” which is the 22d book of the Bible, the one just before the book of Isaiah.

In Matt. 11:30, where it says, “My yoke is easy, and my burden is light, what is the yoke, and what is the burden?

These words were spoken by Jesus. His yoke is his gospel; it is easy to wear, because it just exactly fits whosoever will take up his cross, and follow the Lord, It is not a galling yoke, because it always has the anointing of the Holy Spirit, and furthermore it destroys all other yokes. The burden is the requirements of the gospel. And the one who has left all to follow Christ, and has taken His yoke upon him, will truly find the burden light, and only a pleasure and a blessed privilege to do his bidding. The reason so many people think the gospel yoke hard to bear, is because they are not willing to give up all other yokes and wear the gospel yoke alone. A worldly yoke, sect yoke, secret order, or any other kind does not work in harmony with the gospel. When Jesus said, Take my yoke, he meant that we should take it alone, and let all other yokes be destroyed.

If a person, is wholly sanctified, and sins willfully, is there any redemption for such a one?

S. A. Grisso.

For such a person to conclude that he will willfully commit sin, and then expect to repent of it, and again receive the joys of salvation, would be tempting God; and while such may not be an unpardonable sin, he yet, like Esau, who sold his birthright for a morsel, may seek the blessing with tears, and find it not. It is a serious thing to tempt the Lord and tamper with his mercies. But for a person to be sanctified, and be overthrown by the enemy, and lose the grace of God out of his heart, yet not by open willfulness, and after awhile, finding himself away from God, goes on In sin, he may do that which he knows to be wrong at the time, and do it wilfully, yet repent and get back to God, because the wickedness of his heart urged him on to disobey God. In the latter case such a one may get back into favor with God, but with the former, he has undoubtedly “fallen away.”

Did the disciples receive the Holy Ghost before the day of Pentecost? if so, explain Jno. 20:22.

They did not receive him as the “abiding Comforter,” or sanctifier until the day of Pentecost, as the abiding Comforter was not given until that time. In Jno. 14:16, we find this Comforter promised, and verse 26 tells us that the Comforter, which the Father promised, is the “Holy Ghost,” and Acts 1:4 says that they were commanded not to depart from Jerusalem until they received the promise of the Father. * * * Verse 9. “And when he had spoken these things, while they yet beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.” Acts 2:33 shows that “the promise of the Holy Ghost” was not given by the Father until Jesus had ascended into heaven and sat down on the right hand of God. From the first to the fourth verses of the same chapter gives an account of the Pentecost scene.

From the above scriptures, it is evident that the receiving of the Holy Ghost, as spoken of in Jno. 20:22, was in a different sense from that of receiving the “abiding Comforter.’ The verse reads, “And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost.” This was the third day after his crucifixion, and he had not yet ascended unto the Father. — See verse 17. The disciples were gathered together, and had the doors shut for fear of the Jews. Suddenly Jesus appeared in the room. “And they were terrified, and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit (Luke 24:37); but he talked to them, and gave them to understand that he was the risen Savior; showed them his hands and feet. They were filled with joy, yet would not believe that it really was him. So he called for some meat, and they gave him a broiled fish and a honeycomb, and he ate before them; then he breathed on them, and they knew of a truth, it was him. They had received him before as Jesus, the Savior, in the flesh, and now as he appeared in their midst, as the risen Lord, and breathed on them, he said for them to receive the Holy Ghost. (The Greek says, “A Spirit holy.”) They, received him as a holy Spirit in their midst, and he opened their understanding that they might understand the Scriptures.

Thomas was not with them at that time, and when they told him about it, he declared that he would not believe unless he could see his hands, and put his fingers into the print of the nails, and thrust his hand into his side. Eight days after this, Jesus appeared to them again, and told Thomas to examine his hands and his side, which satisfied the doubting Thomas. He appeared to them again at the sea of Tiberias. It was after this time that they went to Jerusalem, where they were to tarry for the promise of the Father. (Acts 1:4.)

Why did not the disciples obey Christ’s command in Mat. 28:19, and baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, instead of in the name of the Lord Jesus, or in the name of Jesus Christ?

D. W. K.

This was one of the last commands of Jesus, given after his resurrection, to go and baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. And in John 14:23 he says, “If a man love me, he will keep my words. * * * He that loveth me not, keepeth not my sayings.” By reading the Word, we find that the disciples did love him, and obey him. After Jesus left them, and the “Abiding Comforter” was given, we do not find them floundering about, living an “up and down life,” as the manner of some is, but they abounded more and more in the love of God, and went forth, fulfilling his Word. The command spoken of here shows that they were to baptize in the names of the Godhead, or trinity; but we do not infer from this even, that this form of words was given to be said exactly the same in the performance of the act of baptism, or the Lord would have led them to record it the same; although it is all right and proper to do so. To baptize in the name of the Lord, or in the name of Jesus, will fulfill the command just the same, for 1 Jno. 5:7 says, “There are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” Jno. 1:14 tells us that the “Word” is Jesus, as the “Word was made flesh.”

These three being one, it is plainly to be seen that the apostles did obey the command given in Matthew. They may have used the same form of speech during the performance, but whether they did or not, is a matter of little consequence, as it was to be done in the name of the triune God.

There are certain clases of people who discern their creed better than they do the unity of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, who overdo the matter in trying to carry out the teachings of their creed, and baptize three times instead of one. That is just as unnecessary as it would be to purchase goods three times of a firm, in order to be sure they are yours. If Jones, Barnes and Ross enter into partnership to sell goods, the firm consists of these three men, and if you do business with, one of these men, you do business with all three. You would think there was something wrong with the man who would go to the above named firm and purchase a bill of goods of Mr. Jones, and after paying for them, go and say, Mr. Barnes, I have bought a bill of goods of Mr. Jones, now I want to buy them of you: and then go and hunt up Mr. Ross, and do the same thing. At least, it would be evident that such a person did not know much about the rules of the firm, and their way of doing business. So it is with the heavenly firm. In doing business with them, it is done in the firm’s name,

“Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,” as “these three are one.”

Where in the Bible does it say that the names of those who have departed from the Lord are written in the earth?

The quotation is found in Jer. 17:13 “O Lord, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living waters.”

Can you give me any Bible proof that after we come out of the sect churches, we should not attend their meetings, and worship with them?

S. L.

The religious denominations (“sect churches”) of to day, are filled with all classes of people, good, bad and indifferent, — believers, unbelievers, hypocrites, and all manner of spirits and doctrines, making a regular babel confusion, and the word of God calls it mystic, or spiritual “Babylon,” and he now speaks to His children, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. Rev. 18:4. Here you see he calls “his people” out. Then we ask, Why should anyone desire to go and worship with the remainder of them? It is well to beware of the snare from which the Lord delivered you. If God sends anyone there it will be for a purpose, and they will not fail to do their duty. (Rev. 18:5) Where the gospel has never been preached in its purity, God sometimes sends his messengers to declare the message of love, and power of God to save to the uttermost, and to warn the people against the awful snare and sin of sectism, by showing the beauties of the church of the living God, the door of which is Christ himself.

The person who is filled with the Holy Spirit, and does his whole duty in such a place in the meekness and fear of the Lord, will not have the privilege of being a regular attendant very long, as they will not endure “sound doctrine,” but will put you out of their synagogue, or forbid further attendance. Some go back with good intentions, with the hope of giving light, or rescueing some friend, and fail to do their duty, become lean in their soul, and often become entangled again in the not almost before they are aware of it.

Some who claim to be out of sectism, but have never had all the sect wine taken out of them, go about with a lean experience, half on the compromise line, always wanting to have power with God. but will not remove the hindrance; going about fearful, and afraid that something will be said that will hurt some one in sectism, and crying out, “Now, be easy; don’t mention the church question, just preach Christ, and him crucified, etc.” We believe in being as easy as possible, and what we do, let it be done in love, and all to the glory of God; not in a harsh, raking manner; but we do not believe in compromising with the devil, nor any of his works. How can you skillfully handle the two-edged sword without it hurts some one? It was meant to hit, and hew to the mark. How can you preach “Christ, and him crucified,” and say nothing about the church, when Christ is the church? See Eph. 1:22, 23; Col. 1:24. And he is the door of the church. Jno. 10:9; Rev. 3:7.

If sectism is right, Jesus and his apostles would have taught it so, instead of saying that there should be no schisms (sects) in the body, the church. The Word says, Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers. * * * Wherefore, come out from among them, and be ye separate, SAITH THE LORD. 2 Cor. 6:14-17. Let them return unto thee, but return thou not unto them. Jer. 15:19.

Please explain definitely, why we should greet with the holy kiss, and lift up holy hands.

A. J. E.

Because the Word of God says do so. Read 1 Thess. 5:26; Rom. 16:16; 1 Tim. 2:8; Psa. 134:2.

Should a man who is converted and not sanctified, go forth and preach the gospel, and hold meetings?

No: God’s ministers are commanded to preach the Word. It is to be preached in the power and demonstration of the Spirit, and of the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven, A person cannot preach the whole word of God without preaching sanctification, and Paul says in 2 Tim. 2:6. The husbandman that laboreth must first be partaker of the fruits. So must the preacher enjoy the blessing of sanctification before he can preach it with authority. Such should tarry until they are “endued with power from on high,” and receive the sanctifier, which is the Holy Ghost — the spirit of truth, — which leads into all truth, then they will be enabled to lead others into the experience, and help and teach those who are sanctified.

Explain 1 Cor. 15:55. — O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

The 56th verse says that SIN is the sting of death: then when sin is pardoned or removed, the STING of death is gone, and the grave, nor sin has any victory over us, but we have the victory over all such, through our Lord Jesus Christ.

How many modes of divine healing are there? The president of the “lnternational Divine Healing Association,” who writes his name, Rev. John Alex, Dowle, says there are four modes of divine healing. The first, is the direct prayer of faith. Second, intercessory prayer of two or more. Third, the anointing by the elders, with the prayer of faith; and the fourth, the laying on of hands of those who believe, and whom God has prepared and called to that ministry. Matt. 8:5-13; 18:19; Jas. 3:14 15; Mark 16:18.

To the above may be added the sending of handkerchiefs, as mentioned in Acts 19:12. The first mentioned, “direct prayer of faith,” may be offered by the sick person alone, or by some one else. In Psa. 111:9, we find “Reverend” belongs to the name of the Lord, and not to some man or would-be preacher. Even the apostles did not use this title to their names, and thus attach to their own names what belongs to God, as do some of the would-be preachers of modern times. We do not read that Rev. Paul went to Damascus, and Rev. Peter preached on the day of Pentecost, Rev. Philip expounded the Word by the wayside, etc. But in these moders times of popular Christianity, the honor-seeking preachers would scarcely think of recording such an action of his own, without attaching the honorary title to his name. When a man gets the unction from on high to preach the Word, by a real baptism of the Holy Ghost, it takes off the “Rev,” handle from his name, and he seeks to honor God and render due praise unto his name.

The Lord is also president of the divine healing business, but men seeking honor, sometimes try to get up some scheme or association of their own, and call it “divine” in order to make themselves famous. May the Lord help people to render “honor to whom honor is due.”

What about this?

A NOTE OF WARNING.

“We caution our dear brethren and sisters in Jesus — irrespective of denominational lines — who may have the misfortune to come in contact with come-outers, or no-sectites, who claim that sects and religions organizations are of the devil, and that we sin by belonging thereto, to have their eyes well anointed, lest these people get you proselytized, draw the veil over your face and make you become a child of hell two-fold worse than you ever were before. Do not enter into any intimacy with this blinding doctrine, for you may, by listening to it, be led to first refrain from condemning it, then next you will feel like taking part, and before you are aware you will sanction it and be led away. Best thing to do is to stay away, to listen not to it. We deem it superfluous to here add proof of its error. Such proof plentifully exists in the shape of exhaustive treatises on the subject. We, as those who know God, and man’s temptations, simply wish to say. Watch, be on your guard. By a hater of all kinds of hell- born, men-deceiving fads.” From

Gospel Banner.

It appears, by the above, that the Mennonites are getting very uneasy about their craft; and their warnings remind us of the time when Paul went down to Thessalonica to preach (Acts 17:5-7), and the unbelieving Jews stirred up “certain lewd fellows of the baser sort,” and got the city in an uproar, then brought some of the brethren before the rulers of the city, and said, “These are the men that turn the world upside down;” when they themselves were the ones who were in the wrong. They perhaps did not realize what they were doing to God’s anointed.

Paul thought he was doing the will of God when he was persecuting the saints, putting them in prison, consenting to their death, etc. The Lord gave him to understand that it was Jesus that he was persecuting, and warning the people against. Acts 9:5. Paul was not converted then; he did not do such after he was converted. When the people get their eyes well anointed with the “eye salve” of the Holy Spirit, they will have no trouble in seeing the evils of sectism, and will be satisfied to be joined only to Christ, realizing that they are “complete in him” Col. 2:10. May the Lord forgive the writer and instigators of the above so-called warning; they know not what they do.

E. E. Byrum.
