WOMAN’S FREEDOM IN CHRIST,

TO PRAY AND PROPHESY IN PUBLIC WORSHIP.

-:o:-

THERE are only two texts of Scripture that are supposed to teach that women must only take a silent part in the public worship of God. They are the following.

Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. — 1 Tim. 2:11-14.

Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also says the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. 1 Cor. 14:34, 35.

The silence enjoined in the first of these texts, is not said to be in the congregation. It simply forbids the woman to usurp authority over, and teach her husband.

To understand the restriction of the second Scripture, you should read the whole chapter, and learn to distinguish between “prophesying” and “speaking in the Church.” The former is speaking in divine worship, the latter in business etc. The former is thus defined: But be that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. — 1 Cor. 14:3. This includes all speaking in the Church in the form of public worship.

This New Testament sense of prophecy was foretold in the Old Testament.

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sous and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my Spirit. — Joel 2:28, 29.

On the day of Pentecost Peter quoted this prediction, and said it was there being fulfilled. See Acts 2:16-18. Now it the women had all kept silent on that glorious occasion, Peter could not have truthfully said, this is that spoken of by the prophet Joel, namely, “I will pour out my Spirit in the last days, and your sous and your daughters shall prophesy,” and my servants and my handmaids shall prophesy. What is the record of that meeting? We are told that after the ascension of Christ, the disciples returned to Jerusalem, “went into an upper room,” etc. These all continued with one accord in prayer and sup plication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. — Acts 1:14.

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it tilled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of tire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. — Acts 2:2—4.

Both men and women were there assembled. All of them were filled with the Spirit, and began So speak with other tongues. We do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. — ver. 11. So the prophesying of the sons and daughters, servants and handmaids of the Lord began on the day of Pentecost, and consisted in testifying of the wonderful works God had wrought in their hearts by the glorious sanctifier they had just received. This prophesying in the Spirit, by both men and women, having begun on the day of Pentecost, was to continue throughout the Holy Spirit dispensation, and to be one of the marked characteristics of this dispensation. For the “last days” embrace the whole period of this last age. It cannot he supposed that the inspired Apostle would forbid women to do the very thing the Scriptures say they shall do in this dispensation. No indeed. Therefore, in the same chapter in which the above restriction is found, he says, “I would that you all – i.e., all the members of the Church — spoke with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied.” —ver. 5.

This shows conclusively that, every member of the body of Christ, both male and female, had liberty to “speak unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort:” for that is just what prophecy means, as defined in the same chapter. — ver. 3.

If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believes not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all. — 1 Cor. 14:23, 24.

The whole Church may speak with tongues and prophesy. “All prophesy.” These words are very clear and positive. In the light of these words, women can only be excluded on the ground that there were no women members of the Church; but this chapter and all the New Testament history shows the contrary to be true.

What then did the Apostle mean by his restriction in verses 34, 35? “Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also says the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.”

Observe that the Apostle now changes his form of expression from prophesy to “speak.” The former relates to the worship of God, the latter to business matters or by way of interrupting a speaker. This is evident from the fact that Paul would not say, “ye may all prophesy,” and in the same chapter forbid the women to speak, if by prophesy and speak he meant the same thing. Again the reasons assigned, or rather the substitution given for that- speaking, proves he is not talking of speaking in public worship to God. Instead of speaking out in the Church she is required to ask her husband at home. But no woman can ask her husband at home any thing that would take the place of confessing Christ and His salvation in the assembly of His saints. But if she were inclined to interrupt a speaker to ask a question, she could avoid that breech of womanly modesty, by asking her husband at home to give her the desired information. “Let your women keep silent in the Church.” Why? Answer: “If they will learn any thing let them ask their husband at home.” So it is only when they would speak to ask for some information that they are required to keep silent. This kind of speaking is forbidden, because “they are commanded to be under obedience as also says the law.” Godly husbands are usually capable of teaching their wives who are the “weaker vessels.” And for a woman to arise and speak out in the assembly, and ask to be taught some thing would be dishonoring her husband: because it would show that she was not subject to her husband, but- repudiated him. The Apostle’s restriction was also according to the law. Now in the synagogue worship, a man sitting by while another was speaking had a right to interrupt the speaker to ask a question, or to put in a thought. But this privilege was not extended to the Israelite woman. And the same rule the inspired Apostle thinks good in the Church of God. So just before his restriction he says, If any thing be revealed to another that sits by, let the first hold his peace. — verse 30. This verse clearly defines what kind of speaking the Apostle forbids women to indulge in. Thus, and the fact that she was to be subject to her husband, and ask him at home, all show that the prohibition only refers to speaking out to interrupt a speaker, or by way of overstepping woman’s subordination by making herself too free, and conspicuous in business and ruling affairs in the Church. The custom in the synagogue would naturally be the people’s standards of woman’s modesty, and to depart from it, would expose the Church to unnecessary reproach. It is very clear upon the face of this whole chapter that the speaking that is forbidden, is some thing outside the several parts of spiritual worship to God, and is wholly of an intellectual, governmental, and business character.

Of “Philip, the Evangelist” it is recorded that “the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy.” — Acts 21:9. Four daughters that spoke unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort, — see 1 Cor. 14:3.

And I entreat thee also, true yoke fellow, help these women which labored with me in the Gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlaborers, whose names are in the book of life. — Phil. 4:3.

Would any one imagine that the Apostle would lake with him female helpers, and then put a vail over their faces, a gag in their mouths, and command them to keep silent in the Church? No, he declares that they labored with him in the Gospel, even as Clement and other fellow-laborers did. Then Paul was not opposed to holy women using the voices and the talents God had given them to preach and testify the Gospel of the grace of God. Therefore let no man, or false doctrine silence the voice of woman, that is inspired of God, to praise and glorify Him in His sanctuary. It is a fact that the Spirit of God leads redeemed women to prophesy in the congregation, and blesses them in so doing. So every person that opposes them are either willfully or ignorantly an instrument of satan to destroy their souls; for to quench the Spirit brings spiritual death. And any interpretation that conflicts with the Spirit of God, is erroneous; for the Word and the Spirit agree.

There are then no Scriptures that forbid women using her sanctified voice, and talents, in all the several parts of public devotion to God, preaching not excepted when called of God. In all these things there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. — Gal. 3:28.

Confessing Christ before men is even a condition of salvation. See Rom. 10:10. Again, “If we confess Christ before men, He will confess us before the Father and the holy angels. Are the Sisters cut off from this great blessing? By no means; for God is no respecter of persons. Therefore O ye daughters of Zion, having the glory in your souls, “keep not silent;” but “lift up your hands in the sanctuary and bless the Lord.” “Rejoice and be exceeding glad, for thy Maker is thy Husband.” Therefore lift up your voices freely to tell of the love of God, and “show forth the praises of Him that has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” “Obey God rather than man.” Amen I

Woman’s Head Covering.

Read carefully 1 Cor. 11:1-16.

We have found no direct commandment in the law of Moses that required the woman to always wear a vail in public concourse. But such a custom existed. Shame, confusion, and guilt are usually associated with the vail in the Bible. See Psa. 44:15, Jer. 14:3, and many other Scriptures. Judah look Tamar to be a harlot, because her face was veiled. — Gen. 38:15.

The law was a dispensation of condemnation, hence there was much veiling of the face. But the glorious salvation of Christ is represented as a “covering” of the soul. His grace covers our sins, and removes the confusion and guilt of our face, and instead of the vail, we wear the garment of praise. Let us consider this lesson in all candor. First, we observe that the “covering” spoken of in 1 Cor. 11, is not a cap, nor a bonnet, but is the woman’s hair, and also it has reference to a vail. You will find the words covering and vail spoken of interchangeably all through the Bible, as meaning the same thing. The late revised translation renders it vail in this lesson. Also the Emphatic Diaglott. Let us give you a few verses from the latter. “Judge for yourselves; is it becoming for a woman to pray to God unvailed?” — verse 13. Let every body take notice that women are to pray in public, and did so in the primitive Church.

But if a woman should wear long hair it is a glory to her; because her hair has been given to her instead of a vail. — verse 15.

So the word covering In the common version means a vail. Verse six in the Diaglott is as follows: “For if a woman be unvailed, let her hair also be cut off or shaven; but if it is disgraceful to a woman to have her hair cut off or to be shaven, let her be vailed.” Upon this text principally the German Baptist, or Dunkers, base the law for their women wearing caps and bonnets. But the text no more commands a bonnet than it does a hat. So far as this text refers to a literal vail, the Dunkers come as far short of it as the women of all other sect, and as sinners of no profession. And verses 7 and 14 the Dunkers disobey more than any people we know, except the Indians and Chinese. For the same Word that teaches that it is a shame for a woman to have her haircut short, also teaches that a “man ought not to cover his head, namely with “long hair.” But the Dunkers all carry the shame of their long and bushy locks. So they transgress the very Scripture they make a speciality of their sect, more than others, while they yet imagine they alone obey it.

Two kinds of vails, or covering are spoken of in this lesson. Directly the hair, and indirectly the Jewish and eastern vail which covered the head and face, and often nearly the whole person.

The real question that was under contention at Corinth was respecting long and short hair. Judge in yourselves; is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the Churches of God. – l Cor. 11:13-16. The Apostle tells them that nature itself should teach them that short hair is becoming the man, and long hair the woman. And he adds that, if any man seems to be contentious about this matter of hair he is meddling himself about matters which the Church has no custom of agitating.

There are however certain principles involved in this subject. First, “For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head, because of the angels.” — ver. 10. The angels may refer to angels in Heaven, but more likely to messengers that were “sent to spy out the liberties” of the saints. “Power on her head,” denotes her rank: her long hair or vail was the sign of her subjection to man, who is her head, while Christ is his head. Men anciently wore a horn on their cap to denote their rank, authority, and power, whether chief, or subordinate. So the woman’s hair is the token of her power or subordinate position.

The Apostle indirectly refers to the vail that Jewish women wore, by calling the hair a vail. That is, as the Jews in past, thought it a shame for a woman to go out in any public place, where she was likely to meet men unvailed, so it is a shame for a woman of God to be without her long hair. More especially because women having been accustomed to wear both long hair and a vail, would be exposed to shame, were she to dispense with both. However only the matter of hair is directly considered. “Every woman that prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonoreth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.” — ver. 5. That is to have her hair out off is as shameful as if she were shaven, “For if the woman he not covered — with long hair — let her also be shorn — i.e., shaven: but if it he a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered,” i.e. with long hair. Then without changing the subject, he continues in verses 13, 14, 15, to call that same covering the woman’s hair. “If a woman have long hair it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.” — 15. This settles the question. The Emphatic Diaglott renders it, “her hair is given her instead of a vail.” No cap, bonnet, or fabric vail, is enjoined, but “instead of the vail,” is her hair given her. To be shorn is explained to be shaven — verse G. To be covered is to have long hair — verses 13, 14, 15.

The woman of God having her hair long, then has the Scriptural covering, and need not be ashamed to pray or prophesy in the Church, whether they have any thing else on their head or not. The old superstitious vail is inconsistent with the joy and freedom of the saints of God. The vail denoted guilt, shame, and confusion, whereas God has made the face of all His anointed to shine with joy, peace and eternal glory, and the very beauty of holiness.

It were a false testimony, for it denotes guilt and gloom, but the Lord has put everlasting gladness in our hearts. The dark long vail would be a tit emblem of the doleful religion of dead formality, but unsuited to the redeemed. “But even unto this day when Moses is read — or some dark age creed — the vail is upon their hearts. Nevertheless, when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.”

But we all with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit, of the Lord. — 2 Cor. 3:15, 16, 18.

These Scriptures connect vailing of the heart with that, of the face. The latter denoted the blindness, guilt and ignorance of the former. So a vail would be a good index to the darkened heart of Dunker, and other dead sects. But they neither wear the literal vail, nor yet the garment of praise. Thus says the Lord to them:

Woe to the rebellious children, says the Lord, that take counsel, but not of me: and that cover with a covering, but not of my Spirit, that they may add sin to sin: That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt! Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion. — Isa. 30:1-3.

Dear Brethren in Christ: — My testimony this morning is, that I am saved and have the witness in my soul that I please God, who gives me complete victory over the world. Glory to his holy name! I praise Him for a salvation that keeps us in these perilous times, and fills our hearts with His pure love. I feel His love in my soul just now, that flows wide like a river. Praise the Lord, O my soul and all that is within me bless the His holy name. O, may we praise Him more and more for His goodness to the children of men. I will bless the Lord at ail times, His praise shall he continually in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord, the humble shall hear thereof and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt His name together. I sought the Lord and he heard me and delivered me from all my fears. O fear the Lord ye His saints, for there is no want to them that fear Him. The young lions do lack and suffer hunger; but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing. Be glad in the Lord and rejoice ye righteous, and shout for joy all ye that are upright in heart. The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear; the Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid? One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple.

O dear ones prove faithful to God and soon we shall go to those mansions which Jesus has gone to prepare for us. O sinner come to the loving Savior, He will not cast you off. He says, “The day that ye seek me with your whole heart, I will be found of thee.” Come unto me all that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Glory to His name for such rest in Jesus. I am resting in the ark and am saved.

Pray for the dear ones in this place that God may keep us all in His love, rooted and grounded in the faith of the Gospel.

Your sister doing God’s will.

He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. (Pro. 28:13.)

TO THE SAINTS.

—:o:—

BE ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given Himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; neither filthiness nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. — Eph. 5:1-4.

Because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow His steps: who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth — 1 Pet. 2:21, 22.

Now dear saints of God, let us not lose sight of our blessed Jesus, and begin to compare ourselves by ourselves: for they that do these things are not wise. He has told us in His Word, to let our adorning be the adorning of a meek and quiet Spirit, which in the sight of God is of great price. — 1 Pet. 3:4. Now dear saints, let not your adorning be the outward adorning of plaiting the hair or of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel. Do not try to see how near you can walk like the world and yet. be called a saint: but lake Jesus for the pattern and His Word for the guide. Now it is evident that the world is on the move and are getting farther away from God; and as the saints of God are on the move also, they must either be traveling the same way or are getting farther apart. The Apostle was forgetting those things that were behind and reaching after those things that were before. But we see among the saints a disposition when we preach on this line, and they are convicted of what they are wearing, they begin to compare among themselves, and perhaps the one you are looking to can give in a fine testimony, but their heart goes after covetousness and is not cleansed from the gross sin of pride. Now let every one prove themselves whether ye be in the faith; and if you are dead to sin and your life is hid with Christ in God, seek those things that are above and not those things that are on earth: for where your treasure is there will your heart be also.

Now dear saints of God, again I admonish you in the name of Jesus Christ that you shut your eyes and your ears and your mouth: that you look upon nothing that is not of God, and that you listen to nothing that would lead yon away, and that you speak, not only as you can glorify God. Let us practice holiness in all our lives, and the God of Heaven will be with us. Amen!

THE LOVE OF GOD

—:o:—

For this is the love of God that we keep His commandments: and His commandments are not grievous — 1 John 5:3. If ye love me keep my commandments. He that hath my commandments, and keeps them, he it is that loves me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Jesus answered and said unto him, It a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him and make our abode with him. — John 14:15, 21, 23. If we love God and keen his command meats Jesus does abide I is our souls.

If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. — John 15:10. And this is love that ye walk after His commandments. This is the commandment that as ye have heard from the beginning ye should walk in it. Herein is our love made perfect that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is so are we in this world. And it is written be ye holy for I am holy.

Mrs. J. B. Slagle.

__________

“BE YE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY”

—:o:—

God in His Word, commands you to be holy, and without blame before Him in love. According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love. — Eph. 1:4. But, as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation. Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. — 1 Pet. 1:15, 16. God is holy, and every individual that is fully saved through the blood of Christ, is just as holy as God is, morally speaking. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.—1 John 4: IT. The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. — Luke 6:40.

The Word of the Lord says. For both lie that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call us brethren. — Heb. 2:11. So God, and His sanctified people are one; and to say that they are not holy, would be equivalent to saying that God is not holy, and that Christ is unholy. That were dishonoring God — He is holy, Christ His Son is holy, and all of His people are holy; and they follow Him. For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth. — 1 Pet. 2:21, 22. So Jesus says, That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without, fear, in holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.—Luke 1: 74. 75.

I have learned since Jesus saved my soul, to stand on the veracity of His Word; and speak as the oracles of God. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God gives: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. — 1 Pet. 4:11. If you love to glorify God, speak as His Word does. If not keep silent, for you have no right to speak contrary to His Word.

I tell you heaven’s foundations are sale to stand on. The Word of God will endure for ever. ‘‘Though heaven and earth shall pass away, yet He says, my word shall not pass away.” The Devil has mystified and blinded the hearts, and minds of the people; so they do not know their privileges in the Gospel at all. They have no conception of God’s divine truth. He says be ye holy, all through the Book: I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creeps upon the earth, Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the Lord your God. And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the Lord am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine. — Lev. 11:44. 20; 7, 26. That ye may remember, and do all may commandment, and be holy unto your God. — Num. 15:40.

For thou art an holy people unto the Lord I by God: the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth. The Lord shall establish thee an. holy people unto himself, as he has sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, and walk in his ways. — Deut. 7:6 28:9. Glory ye in his holy name; let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord. — 1 Chron. 16:10. And I said unto them. Ye are holy unto the Lord: the vessels are holy also; and the silver and gold are freewill offering unto the Lord Cod of your fathers. — Ezra 8:28.

Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place. He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. Glory ye ill his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord. Seek the Lord, and his strength: seek his face evermore. — Ps. 24:3, 4. 105:3, 4. And it shall come to pass, that he shat is left, in Zion, and he that remains in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is among the living in Jerusalem. — Isa. 4:3 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power. — Col. 3:4. 2:10.

But men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, do not believe that a man is complete in Christ; so they have devised other plan’s, beside the plan of salvation. Men have instituted and set up sect creed, and called them churches — that such work is an abomination in the sight of God, and it emanated from the Devil. May God pity such crooked, deceived souls. Verily the Devil has authorized them to do such work. Then came the disciples, and said unto him. Knows thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? But he answered and said. Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch — Matt. 15:12-14.

These blind Pharisees, who are guilty of sect-making, will be engulfed in the pit “where the rich mail lifted up Ins eyes, being in torment. I pray God that they may see their deceived condition, and repent of their ungodly deeds.

God demands of us His people to stand alone on His pure Word, which is heaven’s eternal truth. Every individual that is in Jesus Christ, is saved out of every your but Jesus, and is a branch grafted by Christ into the Vine. But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body as it hath pleased him. – 1 Cor. 12:18. They are a part of Jesus, so closely connected that the Christ life flows through and pervades our entire system.

Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. — 11 Cor. 4:10, 11. And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled. In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblamable and unreproveable in his sight. — Col. 1:21, 22.

Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to he brought unto you at the revolution of Jesus Christ: As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorances but as he which has called you is holy so be ye holy in all manner of conversation: because it is Written, be ye holy for I am holy. — 1 Pet. 1:13-16.

The word of God is pure, and it will judge you on the last day, Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him. Pro. 30:5. Beloved, now are we the sons of God; and it doth not yet appear what we shall be; but we know that when He shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself even as he pure. 1 John 3:23.

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Matt. 5:8. Thanks he to God, the blessed Christ, who his give us, who have believed, and obeyed His word a pure heart. Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call upon the Lord out of a pure heart. 2 Tim. 2:22. Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. Titus 1:15, 16.

If the devil could got every one to disbelieve God’s word; every poor soul would be lost. But glory to God for a few holiest souls. who by the grace of God, believe and obey His holy word. They have obtained the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal_ glory.” “But some believe a lie that they may be damned.” Let us speak His word in spite of the devil. For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

Saved through Christ.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

-:o:-

Henderson, Pa.

THERE next morning after the close of the Jerry City camp-meeting, Bro Kilpatrick and myself took train at Fostoria Ohio for Big Bend Pa, camp grove meeting. When we got there we found the little ones had begun the meeting though few in number, but the God of power was there to both save and keep. After we came, the saints began to come from the he different places till a goodly number were present the last Sabbath, though the greatest part of the day was unfavorable to hold an outdoor meeting. In the afternoon we had meeting in dear Brother H. Latshaw’s barn, and bad a good meeting. The little ones testified boldly of all God bad done for them. The most of the saints went to their homes on Sabbath and Monday, but we continued the meeting till Tuesday night. This meeting was held in a new place, hence the people were not careful to take hold of the doctrine which we held up to them. But thank God, a few that wanted to be free from all

sin and the devil, got down at the foot of the across and was made whole and went on their way rejoicing in the Bock of their! salvation. The last day of the meeting: we went down to the Allegh by River where Bro. Kilpatrick baptized seven “into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” Those little ones were happy in doing all that the dear Lord Jesus has commanded in the Word of God.

From Big Bend we went to hold a few meetings in the Red Line meeting house where the Lord used us last fall in the salvation of many poor souls. We found the saints of the Most High full of the Jove of God, and was wonderfully I strengthened by our coming. Also some that had lost the joy of full salvation were restored and made happy in the love of God. At this place we held three meetings, and we would have staid longer but had to make oar stop short in this state so as to be to the meeting at Hamilton Mich. After we closed at Red Line we went to Mariasville and held meeting two nights in the name of the Lord. O bless God!

He is always with us to help in the battle. The people in that place seem to take the Word of God, and no doubt if we were permitted to remain longer a good work could be done in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. We returned from there to Pittsville to hold an ordinance meeting with the little ones that love to obey the commandments of our Lord Jesus Christ. O what a deep settling down in the will of God the saints had that night. Some came to the altar for pardon and some for sanctification. Thank God! He did satisfy their hearts and they went on their way rejoicing that they were made free from all sin and the devil, that once had them bound.

Dear Bro. and sister Frost from Henderson Pa. was with us in that blessed little meeting; they had come to convey us to their place to hold a few meetings in the name of the Lord. The next morning, Sept 22, Bro. and sister Dillon, sister Nannie Donnell, Bro. A. J. Kilpatrick and myself left Red Valley for Henderson, and now we are here to do all the Lord has for us to do.

Your saved Bro. in the Body of Christ, sanctified by the blood of the Lamb.

Dear Brethren:—1 am praising Jesus to-day for a full and free salvation, and I feel it is the will of God for me to testify through the Trumpet to what God has done for me. I am saved and sanctified and kept by the power of God from all sin. I have a salvation that causes me to triumph over trials, and a peace in my soul that is unspeakable, and passes all understanding. I do love to read the TRUMPET and the pure testimonies it always brings, I pray God to spread this glorious Gospel truth through it. Your sister in Christ, saved, sanctified, and under the blood.

To all the Saints of God:—Praise the Lord, I am saved and sanctified just now, and by 1 he help of God will continue so. Praise the Lord 1 It is about six years since the Lord saved my soul. Then I presented my body a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable before God which was my reasonable service, and lie cleansed me.

Well I would say to ail the saints of God that the Lord has saved me from the pleasures of this world, such as fairs, shows, icecream parties, picnics, and all such trash that belongs to the devil. Praise our God for ever and ever!

We have been holding meetings around home, but everything was against us; professors would not receive the plain truth, therefore sinners were hardened the more. Then we remembered the Words of the Lord that a prophet is not received in his own country. Then we went away from home. Now the Lord is working, and souls are being saved; The Lord save souls is my prayer. Your Brother out of babylon, saved and sanctified.

Dear Brethren:— May the God of love, peace and power be with you all and establish yon in the present truth. Well bless the Lord, we have been comforted by our dear brother Isaac coining to us to help us fight against the enemy. Hallelujah to God and the Lamb for ever and ever for this blessed evening light that is revealing the man of sin and uncovering their hiding places. Well we are in battle array against the foes and all sin. We have held a few meetings and some are convinced of the way; several have raised their hands for prayers. The Lord is working among us. Let all the saints pray for us that the Lord may raise up some children here that will stand straight for Him, to help us fight the enemy.

Dear Brethren: — I can say this morning to the glory of God that I am saved and sanctified and kept by the mighty power of God- O how I praise God for this great plan of salvation that can save and keep us in all times of trial and trouble. Praise God for peace within, though the storms may rage without; for Jesus is a sure refuge from all trouble. It is my earnest prayer to God that He will send some one here to preach His holy Word, that sinners may be saved. Your sister in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Oh I just give God all the glory for what I feel in my soul, and I have victory over the world and the devil. Glory to God and the Lamb forever! Dear saints pray for us that God may keep us and use us to glorify Him; and that we may be the means of saving some poor sinner. Your sister in Christ –

Dear Brethren: — The Lord has done wonderful things for me of late, for which I give Him all the glory. I never met with any of the Gospel Trumpet family till this week. I went to the Jerry City camp-meeting, I saw Some things that I thought, was not right, I told them so, and they said I was not right. I could not see it. as they did, so I went out in the woods and I told the Lord I wanted to do His will in ail things that He would make known to me. Then they preached against me, but I kept sweet under it, we had made arrangements to go home on Friday; we sent for the hack to take us to the depot. in the morning they had faith healing, I had no intention what ever of going forward, although I had talked about it, and the first thing I knew I was out at the bench, I told them I had a dizziness in my head, and I had faith in God that I could be healed. They told me they Would not do it unless I would make a new consecration to God. That done the work, I saw that was answering my prayer in the woods. Praise the Lord! I saw it was not merely water we take to wash our feet but also obedience, I hope fill that will read this will say praise the Lord. Your saved Bro.

Dear Brethren: — I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony. I can truly say the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want and when the chief shepherd shall appear I shall receive a crown of glory that fades not away. Praise God! The Lord Himself shall give it unto us who are faithful unto the end. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge shall give me at that day; and not to me only but unto them also that love His appearing. All who are made perfect in love will love the appearing of Christ, when He shall come with a shout with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God. I praise God for my deliverance out of babylon confusion, I am free from sect and am walking with Christ every day and hour of my life. I am hid away with Christ in God; He is all and in all to me. I am saved sanctified and kept by the mighty power of God.

Archbold, O.

To the Church of the first born whose names are written in heaven. May God bless you dear saints. This Royal family who have kept the faith amid sectarian winds and fide. My constant, prayer is, “Lord restore those who have fallen,” through the example of those who claim to be saved. O dear ones come back to your loving Lord! O the blessed promise how they ring through the secret chambers of my soul. “If ye abide in me and my works abide in you, ye shall ask what you will, and it shall be done unto you.” I do rejoice in the Lord always that I can make my request known unto God, and his judgment goes on before unto victory through the billows that roll. They touch me not, they break at my feet and pass away. The arrows of persecutions fly thick but they only strike the rock. I am hid with Christ in God, who rules and does make all His work easy. O how many think they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge, going about establishing their own righteousness. O glory to God! We need not go through this world in the dark, for God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all; so if we abide in Him we abide in light.

I do bless God for the pure light that shines in my soul just now. My mind fails to find expression in words that would convey that inexpressible weight of glory that fills my soul. Only those who are living inside the second veil can understand this pure holy light. Praise the Lord, my will is to be just what God wants me to be, framing my life by His who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth. He has left us an example to follow. We who have purified ourselves, and are made pure by the precious blood of Jesus will not indulge in light conversations; for our conversation is in heaven. By our words we are justified, and by our words we are condemned. My constant prayer is, “O God keep my heart pure, keep thy church pure,” of which Paul prayed day and night. Of a truth we must pray without ceasing. O dear ones you are written epistles in our heart continually. May God keep you all established unblamable m holiness until Christ comes. Pray for us dear ones at this place. Your sister wholly sanctified, and satisfied, and wonderfully healed by the Lord.

Bear Brethren: — I can praise the Lord for what I feel in my soul. I was over across the lake last night to Bro. Sweets and we had a good meeting. Praise the Lord for ever and ever! Oh it is good to be the Lord’s, and to know that He saves us all the time. Well my testimony is this morning that I am all on the altar ready to do the will of my Father which is in heaven in what-ever He makes known unto me. Your saved Bro.

Dear Brethren: — May the God of all grace keep your minds and hearts in peace and love until the Lord shall come. Amen! I do praise the dear Lord for permitting me to attend the Beaver Dam camp-meeting, to hear God’s word preached in the Spirit and power. Glory be to Jesus forever and ever, for His goodness and mercy to the children of men, and for redeeming me from the curse of the Law; and giving me an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. Glory to Jesus for enabling me to stand oil His promise in spite of wicked men, and devils, Glory to God! I am saved through and through, from the fear of man, and out of all babylon confusion; sect yokes and bands of evil doers. Hallelujah to the Lamb of God forever and ever! There are quite a number here who are anxious to hear the pure gospel preached and would receive it gladly, and my prayer is, that ere long God may send some of His baptized, and Holy Ghost anointed ministers this way. Glory to God I am sanctified through the truth, and Wholly given up to God to do His will in all things; and on the blood and fire line for Jesus, made white and being tried; and in the Church which is the ground and pillar of the truth, established by God Himself. Amen!

Dear Trumpet readers, and Saints of the living God: May the Lord bless you. I feel led to testify through the Trumpet, that the blood of the everlasting covenant has sanctified me through and through, and keeps me ready for the Master’s use. We came to this place on the 9th. of Sept. and commenced meeting at the Buffalo school-house. The people gladly received the word, and many are accepting the truth and are being made free. Quite a number have consecrated for pardon, and found sweet relief to their sin sick souls and are praising God for the evidence that their sins are all washed away by the blood of Jesus. O I do praise God for the wonderful victory that I have in my soul over all the powers of the devil. O it is just wonderful how the Lord fills me with His glory: wave after wave has flooded this earthen temple. Glory! glory I am redeemed. From your Bro. washed in the blood and made white and tried.

Dear Saints: — It is with the glory of God in my soul that I write my testimony, and I do testify with an honest heart that I have been cleansed from all sin, and have been washed in the blood of the Lamb, and I am standing on the solid Rock which the gates of hell cannot prevail against, and that Rock is Christ. But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into Him in all things, which is the Head, even Christ. — Eph. 4:15. And He is the Head of the Body, the Church: who is the beginning, the Firstborn from the dead; that in all things He might have the preeminence. — Col. 1:18. That Christ should suffer, and that He should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should show light unto the people, and to the Gentiles — Acts 26:23. O how I do thank God for the glorious light that He has sent into this neighborhood, and that so many have received it, and are walking in the light as He is in the light. O glory to God for the wonderful work that lie has done for me. He has cleansed me from all filthiness, and from the use of tobacco, and took all the appetite for it away from me. He cleansed me from all sects and has set me in the Vine as it pleased Him, and chosen me out of the world and the world knows me not because it knew Him not. O praise God that I am one of His little ones and I am saved, sanctified and kept by the mighty power of God. Pray for me that I may stand firm.

Your Brother.

Dear Brethren and Trumpet Readers: The Spirit of the Lord leads me to write some of my past experience. In the fear of the Lord I obey it. I was once a very wicked hoy and delighted in the ways of the Devil. I tried first this way and then that way of the Devil, and found no peace in any of them. Then I realized the truth of this Scripture; There is no peace, says my God, to the wicked. – Isa. 57:21. Thus I went on in wickedness until I was 15 years old, when God for Christ’s sake spoke peace to my soul. This wrought quite a change in me, in as much as it turned me right about face and made a new creature of me, and I found that old things had passed away, and be hold all things had become new.

And yet after I had experienced so great a change as this within my soul, I did not feel satisfied. I felt a hungering and thirsting after more righteousness. (It was sanctification I wanted, but I did not know it.) Well glory to God! the promise is that “they who hunger and thirst alter righteousness shall be filled. — Matt. 5:6.

Previous to my conversion, I had been taught that a man never felt free until he had united himself with some sect. — What a delusion of the Devil; God have mercy on a man that will preach such heretical doctrine as that. Well I was ignorant enough to believe it, so about twenty-four hours after I had been converted, I joined myself with the M. E. sect, but that did not make me feel clear, for I had Old Adam to contend with, and you brethren who have had the experience, know what it is to under take the life of a Christian while possessed with Old Adam. Sometimes by much prayer I would get victory enough in my soul to live a season; but when the Devil would try to tempt me, I would feel the Adamic nature rising in me so strong that I was unable to live any longer without sinning. Thus I wrestled with that nature for about two and a half years, sometimes sinning and sometime! repenting. But bless God when the two and a half years had expired, God sent some of his holy ministers into our part of the country to preach the straight word and I was permitted to hear it; and after trying the doctrine by the Word of God, I was convinced that it was the right way; so I consecrated for sanctification and while I knelt at the mercy seat, God sanctified my soul. Then I felt free and immediately I came out of the M. E. sect, and resolved never to go back into it nor any other Sect Pen. And since that time I have had complete victory over the Adamic nature, the world, and the Devil. Shortly after I had been endued with power from on high (Luke 24:49.) the Spirit seemed to say to me, “go out in the field and feed my sheep.” I said I would go.

So now I am all given over into the hands of the Lord, ready to go out in the field and publish free salvation wherever called upon. Pray for me all ye God’s people that God will open a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am both called and anointed. Your Bro. in Christ.

Dear Saints Of God: — I praise God this evening for salvation through the blood of Jesus. Trials have been great for the past month, but God’s grace has been sufficient. One month ago to-day I looked as my dear husband for the last time in this world, but I feel that it will not be long until we meet with Jesus. “The Lord gives and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.” “Every thing works together for good, to them that love the Lord.” The Word says, the trials of our faith are precious. Praise God, for His words to me in trouble. “In six troubles I will he you, yea in the seventh I will not forsake you.” Pray for me. Your sister saved.

Dear Brethren: — I feel led 1o testify to the goodness of God, that He saves me by His mighty power. I praise His holy name for all He has done for me. I praise Him for the healing power and for saving a poor sinner like me. I do know this is the (rue way to serve God. Praise His holy name for ever more.

D. S. Warner: — Having read the Gospel Trumpet through the kindness of Mr. H. R. Morrison, I like it so well I enclose five dollars for its spread through the world. I wish some of the servants of the Lord would come this way and preach the everlasting Gospel, heal the diseased. O I want to hear the glad news, for I am deaf and have not heard a sermon for years. Let all the saints pray for your sister.

OBYTUARY.

—:o:—

Sept. 15, 1887.

Our dear sister, Jane Anna Vernon, wife of Kelson Vernon died September 8th, aged 41 years. Leaves a husband and six children to mourn her loss: but their loss is her gain. Her death was one of complete victory in Christ. Mr. Vernon moved from Canada to Emerson Mich., one year ago, where they soon gained many warm friends. Meeting with the saints, and hearing the blessed Gospel of the Son of God in its pure light, she made a consecration but did not receive witness of her acceptance until the Saturday before she died. When the light broke in upon her soul she exclaimed, I am well, I am well; God has saved my soul. From that time on her soul was filled with praises to God, and exhortation to those who came in the room telling them to meet her in Heaven, and sweetly singing:

“There’s no Jordan’s swelling river,
For the saints have over come:
But we all will shout salvation,
And go singing glory home.

“We will sing, we will sing,
Till this glorious light of faith is over,
Then round the throne of God in Heaven,
Praise the Lord for ever more.”

Services were held at the brick school house in Emerson.

A. J. Shelly.

Let her sleep, she’s sweetly resting,
To Thy will we meekly bow,
Jesus sent her this sweet message,
Thy sins are all forgiven now.

Dearest sister we shall miss thee,
Miss thy voice in holy song;
But we feel that we shall meet thee,
At the longest, ‘t will not be long.

Keep us Jesus, watching, praying,
With our lamps all burning bright,
Lest at coming thou shouldst miss us,
Failing then to see our light.

Then again in songs of triumph,
As we reach the other shore,
Fond hearts there no more shall sever,
For life’s warfare then is o’er.

Husband, seek Jane Anna’s Savior,
He will be a friend to you;
To your heart bring peace and favor,
No other friend so dear and true.

Remember her request while dying,
Husband, meet me on that shore
Where there is no pain or sighing,
And where parting is no more.

Willie, Frankie, little Johnny,
Carrie, Maudie, and Jimmy too,
Seek and find your Mamma’s Savior,
He who shed His blood for you.

Mary A. Shelly.

ADVENTISM RENOUNCEDA HEAVY BLOW.

-:o:-

D. M. Canright, one of the most prominent preachers, debaters and tract writers of the Advent heresy, has repented of his false doctrine and renounced the same. At the time of his departure out of that sect, he was assistant editor of one of their papers, was teacher of theology in the Advent college at Battle Creek, Mich. He was reputed the best debater in that law- ventist sect. Since he has made ids escape out of one horn of the beast religion, we earnestly pray that he may seek God and get salvation, and keep out of all other sects. The following is some of his reasons for leaving saturnarianism.

Daniel.

WHY I LEFT THEM.

I did not leave the Seventh-Day Adventists because of any ill treat meat by them, for they have treated me in the most kindly manner, paid me liberally, given me the best of positions, appreciated all I did, loved me as a brother, and did all that it was possible to do to keep me with them. I left, them because I became profoundly convinced that it was a system of error that, was working evil to the believers, to society, and to the Gospel. I cheerfully bear them record that they are an honest, earnest, self-sacrificing class. But to be honest is one thing, and to be right is quite another.

It cost me a great struggle and a great sacrifice to leave them, for in doing it I had to leave all my life long friends, the cherished hopes of my youth, the whole work of my life, all the means of ray support, every honorable position I held, and bring upon myself reproach, hatred and persecution. I had to begin life anew among strangers, with untried methods, uncertain there to go or what to do. No one who has not tried it can ever, begin to realize the fearful struggle it requires. It is the dread of all this which holds many with them who are yet dissatisfied where they are. I know that this is so, for many confessed it to me and yet remained where they were. I will quote a few words from letters received: “I have had many blue times in my experience because of these doubts. . . . Once I decided that I must follow the convictions of my own judgment in these things; but when the time came the pressure was so Strong that I tried to convince myself that I was wrong. . . . the fads are, I am just miserable. . . . It seems like a terrible thing to take a course that will cause all the cherished friends of this world to look upon you as one fallen from grace; and here I am bound by these chains.” And there he and hundreds of others remain to-day. Another writes: “It seems to me that the views held by Seventh-Day Adventists are so burdensome that they will crush me. They are a yoke of bondage which I cannot stand up under. Still I do want lo be right.” Another writes: “I tell you I am in a badly muddled up state in religion, and knowing you have been to the very button of the Seventh- Day Adventists faith, and now have bidden adieu to it. I apply to you.” Another minister writes: “How am I straightened, while the fetters are being forged for most unwilling limbs! . . . What, a distress we are in as a people! how miserable! and is there no relief?” And still another talented minister writes me: “Our ministers, and people as well, are growing to be a denomination of hypocrites, by a slavish fear of expressing an honest belief. . . . I am sick and disheartened. . . . The basis of confidence is gone, and I shall only a wait the comeout of the matter.” Still another writes: “There is a fear on the part of the powers that be, of free thought and free discussion. So far as this is the case it is a shame and disgrace to us,” And yet all these good brethren patch up the matter come way, and go right on as though nothing were wrong. I knowhow to pity them without censuring them, for I myself have passed through the very game experience.

These are fair samples of how scores among them feel, from men in leading positions to the humblest is the church. Largely they keep it to themselves, but occasionally it will out. Many of them almost get out, and then fall back to linger along in bondage all the rest of their lives. Some backslide entirely; some go off into spiritualism, into Universalism, into infidelity, or into some fanatical notion, and so are ruined forever. I have before me a list of thirty-six ministers who once preached the Seventh-Day Adventism faith, but in the end were either ruined by it or else gave it up for spiritualism, for Universalism, for atheism, for infidelity, for some fanatical sect, or for nothing. Nearly all these were talented men, persons who were first-class ministers, fully as able, and in some respects, more talented, than any now remaining with them. In fact, more first-class, able ministers have left them than they now have with them.

Elders T. M. Preble and J. B. Cook were the very first Adventist ministers who embraced and preached the Seventh-Day Sabbath. They were both men of decided talent and wide influence. They wrote the first books in favor of that day in connection with the Advent doctrine. See Andrew’s “History of the Sabbath,” pp. 501, 502. Thus they were the real fathers and founders of the present Seventh-Day Adventist movement. But both these men finally gave it up, and opposed it ever afterwards. This is a significant fact which makes a bad showing for a work which claims so much of divine guidance in its origin.

The ministers of less talent who ‘have quit preaching it are more numerous still. Also I judge that about one-third of those who embrace the Seventh-Day finally give it up, while many of those who hold on to it live in a backslidden condition. Also, at different times, quite large parties have split off from them, holding on to the Sabbath, but opposing the visions of Mrs. White and other points.

WHY I GAVE UP THE SEVENTH DAY.

I gave up the observance of the seventh day because I became fully convinced that the evidence was not sufficient to justify its observance, and that the blessing of God did not go with the keeping of it.

But after keeping it twenty-eight years; after having persuaded more than a thousand others to keep it; after having read my Bible through, verse by verse, more than twenty times; after having scrutinized, to the very best of my ability, every text, line and word in the whole Bible having the remotest bearing upon the Sabbath question; after having looked up all these, both in the original and many translations; after having searched in lexicons, concordances, commentaries and dictionaries; after having read armsful of books on both sides of the question; after having read every line in all the early church lathers upon this point; after having written several books in favor of the seventh day, which were satisfactory to my brethren; after having debated the question for more than a dozen times; after seeing the fruits of keeping it, and after weighing all the evidence in the fear of God and of the judgment, I am fully settled in my own mind and conscience that the evidence is against the keeping of the seventh day. Now, if others think they know better about this question than I do, and that they can settle it in a day, as I once did, I shall not quarrel with (hem, but pity their credulity.

—:o:—

Dearly Beloved Saints of the Most High God: to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Savior Jesus Christ: grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, according as His divine power hath given unto us all thing; that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue. — 2 Pet. 1:1-3. In the last days when perilous times shall (have) come we find very much profession without a possession theory instead of experience form but denying file power &c. &c. Hundreds of people are living on past experience, being deceived they think because they were saved years or months ago of course they are now alright. Oh may God help us all to see to it that we are indeed saved NOW. One gross error among many holiness teacher? of to-day is this: when sanctified they are satisfied and have got every tiling. Again they will say, When I was first sanctified, I felt such sweet peace and rest, felt better than I have before or since. Well bless God! I feel a greater peace and joy now as I write than ever before. Praise God! Jude in writing says, “To them that are (present tense) sanctified by God the Father and preserved in Jesus Christ and called. Mercy unto you, and peace and love be multiplied.” God says of the Church at Ephesus, I know thy works, and thy labor, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast fried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: and hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name’s sake hast labored, and hast not fainted. Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. — Rev. 2:2-4. They had works, had tried false prophets &e, had labored, had not fainted and in fact were far in advance of much of the professed Christianity of to-day, and yet God says, they had left their first love, backslidden, had been converted, yet had the outward form, but were destitute of the real experience in their soul. Again God speaks Lo the Church in Sardis: I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. – Rev. 3:1, 2. Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white. — verse 4.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

—:o:—

THE ACKRON KAN. CAMPM MEETING.

—:o:—

Burden, Kan. Sept. 18th.

This meeting was held on the place of Bro. Benj. Ahelrich, whose family, parents, and children are all on the Lord’s side. God bless them abundantly and reward their kindness, and labor of love toward God’s little ones. One great difficulty in Gospel work here in the West, is the people do not come out to meeting in the day lime. All seem to be to busy in the sordid things of earth to have time to go to meeting or seek God. The curse in this Western prairie, is greedy covetousness and worldliness. About every soul is on a stretch for as much as possible of this world. So much so that God is compelled, for their good, to withhold a competent amount of rain to perfect the crops. If He would give rain enough to enable this rich soil to produce to its full extent, and keep the devouring insects away, the wonderful prosperity that would ensue would be a curse to society, and to the country. Men would straightway forget that they were dependent upon God at all; and wickedness and supreme selfishness would curse the earth, and turn this beautiful paradise, into a theater of all manner of deviltry. If men would but fear and acknowledge God, divide their lands with the poor, and farm to glorify God, and receive the blessings of God with greatfullness to the Great Father of mercies, then God would “rebuke I the devoured of the land,” and send the plentiful showers in their season, and make this beautiful garden of the earth a joyful paradise. Dear Bro. Ahelrich farmed his place last year for the Lord, and instead of about 1600 bushels of wheat, which he expected, he received 2000 bushels. O that this driving, craving West would pause to remember God, and confess their dependence upon Him, and receive His manifold blessing. Every abominable device is resorted to, to grab money, by fair or unfair means. New towns spring up. and the crafty speculators plat the ground and lay out in lots for two and three miles in the country, and scatter abroad plats of a large town or city, and sell lots to men, who supposing that they own a town lot, finally come to see the same, find they have bought a little spot of wild prairie two or three miles out from a village. In order to cheat more successfully they actually lay a street car track a mile or more in the country, which is not used excepting to deceive men. A man unschooled in Western society, purchasing a lot near a street car fine, feels confident that he is in the heart of a city, but on coming to see, finds himself fooled out into the country, by the side of a sham town boom. Look out for all manner of deceptive booms. The town of Winfield, Cowley Co., paid the devil’s preacher, Sam Jones, two thousand dollars for two days service. All to make a big appearance in the papers abroad, and attract, emigration to that place. What abominable deception! A sham preacher, preaches a few sham sermons, and receives two thousand dollars just for a sham appearance that the town of Winfield is a great and wonderful city, and a good place for every body to hasten, that wish their pockets filled with money. That is what they call a boom in the West.

To return to the meeting, we would say that camp meetings are very tame and dull affairs out here, compared with the holy fire baptized convocations we have enjoyed in the East. But thank God the fire burns in our souls. The great curse on the cause is the rotten, crooked, abominable holiness cloaked stuff that has made the very name of holiness odious. Satan has his men, possessed with quaker devils, freelove devils, salvation army devils, and all other shades and stripes of infernal spirits, out teaching and professing holiness; and by so doing lie obstructs the way of the precious lovely doctrine of Bible holiness from entering the minds of the people, and (he glorious experience of their hearts. One M. L. Haney, who has been called the “Patriarch of holiness in the West,” is living in the abominable Methodist cage of devils, and is twice dead, and plucked up by the roots — pretending to preach holiness, and excusing jewelry and oilier abominations of pride, to please the gaudy Methodists. This man held a camp meeting near this place not long ago, and not a soul saved. Men said it was the deadest thing they ever saw. One Melville, a deluded quakerized heretic not far from Winfield, also held a union camp- meeting on his place, which was but little better. This same man remarked to us that Haney’s meeting was the deadest thing he ever attended. Whereupon a brother who had attended both, said, “He had ought to think of his own.”

Some professors of holiness, are training with the salvation army abomination, and are becoming possessed with the devils that infest that ludicrous daughter of babylon. Even some good sincere souls think the salvation army is doing a good work. O that God may open their eyes to see the deceptions of the devils. It is true that some wretched drunkards etc., are made to reform through this shoddy sensational charm. But the devil is very willing a man should reform from drunkenness to join some idolatrous clan, and become infatuated with the abominable idol; there by placing his soul where he is far less liable lo ever be really saved unto God. One of the fruits of this pompous daughter of confusion, attended the camp-meeting a few days, with his big dog, which trained animal he has been in the habit of having perform on I he streets lo draw a crowd to preach to; thus disgracing the name of Jesus Christ with the trickery of a dog. As if the lifting up of Christ Himself was less capable of drawing men than a dog. We found this deceived man in a far worse condition than he could have been before drunken on the wine of the masquerade army. He left the camp without, salvation, still glorying in the tambourine. Oh it is sickening to see the flimsy stuff that is called religion and holiness, by the poor people who have hot sufficient discerning to distinguish between gold and dross.

There were a few souls saved thank God, and quite a number of children of God received a better experience.

Our heart was made to leap for joy, one day on seeing dear father and mother Anthony Rock come into the pavilion. These dear saints were formerly from Eagle. Clinton Co. Mich., where we have met them in meetings in past years. They live at Wichita Kan. and still have the fire of God’s love in their souls. Also Bro. and sifter J. S. Howe, who live twenty miles beyond Wichita, (formerly from Mich.) came to the meeting about seventy miles and were full v saved and healed. The Lord bless these dear ones. We have now pitched the tabernacle in the town of Burden. Let all saints keep praying for us.

Dear Trumpet Readers: — To-day finds me saved and tilled with all the fullness of God, and rejoicing in God the Rock of my salvation. O praise the Lord for a willing heart to follow Him in all of His commandments. How much I praise God for His Spirit that he has given me, and for the way He is leading me. O glory to God! I have forsaken all to follow the Lord and I love the work that He has called me to. It is not grievous for me; for when I gave God my heart, I promised Him that I would obey Him in all things, and I expect to be true to Him. We came to tin’s place to work for the salvation of souls and we expect to see a good work done before we leave; for God has sent us and we know that God’s Word is tine: for He says, “If ye abide in me and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will and it shall he done unto you.” Now we have asked and we know the work will be done. Dear saints of God pray for us that we may be useful in the hands of God. I remain your brother in the Body of Christ. Amen!

Frank B. Smith.

—O—

Linsey, O.

This morning finds me saved to the uttermost. Blessed be our God for ever and ever! O my soul is filled with the-glory of God. We have a glorious little Church here, praise God! they all see alike, and all talk the same thing, and a glorious work is going on here. There were some, yes I dare say all, of God’s little ones of this place were up to the Jerry City camp-meeting. And blessed be our God for the truth! It was a glorious meeting, souls were saved and sanctified, and some that were out of the way were brought back to the true light of God. On Tuesday morning dear Bro. Kilpatrick preached a glorious sermon on baptism, and the understanding of some were opened and received the truth as it is in Christ Jesus. And we all went home better armed to work for our God, Dear children of God, pray for us here. We have good meetings, the house is filled every night, God has done a wonderful work here. Your saved and sanctified brother.

To the Dear Saints of the true and living God. I do feel led by the Lord to write my testimony for the cause of Christ.

Brother Warner do you think it pleasing to the Lord for those who claim to be saints of God to bring old letters of recommendation from old babylon in the meetings off the saints, to show their good standing in babylon? I do feel that any one can be in good standing in old sect babylon, and have no salvation, and more than all be a vile sinner in the sight of God. And I do feel that all spirits that sympathize with sects and sinners are of the devil.

Oh I do praise God for showing me the true light and the true Church of the living God, where He sets the members in the Body as it pleases him; and glory be to God! if we abide in that Church the gates of hell cannot prevail against Glory to God for full and free salvation that keeps us from sin each day! From your Brother saved, sanctified and kept by the power of God.

Frank Schoolcraft.

ANSWER.

“Babylon is fallen, and is become a habitation of devils, a hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every hateful and unclean bird.” A letter of good standing from sect babylon, proves that the holder was in fellowship with devils, and in good standing with foul spirits. The character of babylon is so vile that it is a strong ground of suspicion against the man that can show he was in good standing in her. And a letter to that effect is an abomination to God. Any one who has salvation while living in any of the sects of the present apostasy, could not receive an honorable letter of dismissal, but such can bring evidence that they were hated and despised in her.
