The Bountiful Giver.

As God hath blessed thee, from thy store,
Give and the Lord shall give thee more;
Hast thou of ample wealth command?
Take heed, lest thou withhold thy hand, —
According to our means will He
Hold us accountable to be.

By sweat of brow is earned thy bread —
How oft the hungry go unfed;
Hast thou a shelter from the blast,
A trifle give to the outcast —
Who hath not where to lay His head,
The Potters field when he is dead.

In wretched homes where want doth bide,
And misery and sorrow hide,
Of thy abundance there bestow
Until the tears shall cease to flow;
And suppliant on bended knee,
A prayer to Heaven go up for thee.

Blest ho thy basket and thy store,
If to the needy and the poor
Thou give with bounty full and free,
E’en as the Lord hath given to thee:
And he thy portion, great or small,
The good Lord giveth He not all.

“CHARITY.”

—:o:—

Dear Saints, as you read these two articles from our dear Bro. Slagle, we are sorry to say, they are the last we may ever expect to see in these columns from, his hand. We have just learned that the dear brother has been called home to rest from his labors. Thank God for these precious truths, by which, he being dead (or asleep) yet speaks to us. — Ed.

“THOUGH I speak with the tongues of men and of angels and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal; and though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all of my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned and have not charly, it profiteth me nothing.” – 1 Cor. 13:1-3. In these last days, when perilous times fall (have) come, and when God’s flaming fires, (ministers) cry aloud, and spare not, and lift up their voice like a Trumpet and show My people their transgressions, and the house of Jacob their sins. We often hear those that cannot bear the real truth, cry “Charity, charity, charity,” “Love, love, love.” “O you must have charity,” and a number of like expressions, meaning of course that we must not disturb them for their sins. Paul places charity above all other gifts. And although the other gifts are necessary, yet with them, and lacking charity, “we are nothing.”

We scarcely ever hear the word used with its proper meaning. In the Revised Version, the word charity is translated love, but we find a great deal of false, or spurious charity (love) through the country. We find them quoting “Charity shall cover a multitude of sins.” We shall prove by God’s holy Word that this, nor any other Scripture does not mean as truth resisters say, i.e., “Charity covers, or hides sins, even if God has not forgiven them.” But the truth shows Bible charity covers sins only as they are covered, or forgiven, blotted out by God. The sins of any person unforgiven by God, are held as sins by God’s true servants, and reproved. But when he comes to God and repents, and God forgives and separates him as far as the East is from the West, and are remembered against them no more, just so does charity, then, and only then covers them, and receives the brother just as God does, as though he had never committed any sins. And if they have wronged you in days past, and ask forgiveness, charity forgives, (covers) and counts him as though he had never done anything wrong.

Praise God for charity on the Bible line! Brethren if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him, let him know that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way, shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.” – James 5:19, 20.

We see the way charity covers a multitude of sins, is by converting the sinner from the error of his way, thereby hiding, or covering a multitude of sins.

Bible charity is against, everything God is against, and in favor of everything God is in favor of. Bible charity obeys God rather than man. God looketh not upon do with the least degree of allowance. So does God’s love (charity) the same.

Whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven. — Matt. 16:19.

God says, All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. — 2 Tim. 3:16.

Thus we see charity corrects, instructs, &c by the Bible which is profitable. God says again, “Preach the Word, be instant in season out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.” — 2 Tim. 4:2. “Warn them that are unruly, comfort, the feeble minded, support the weak.” — 1 Thess. 5:14. “Abstain from all appearance of evil.” “Abhor that which is evil, cleave to that which is good.” Rom. 12:9. “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil.” “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against (not with them) the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. — Eph. 6:12.

Now these persons who talk so much about charity, when measured by God’s holy Word are found to be void of it. Now beloved, let us see what charity is, and then see if we have it. God says, charity is the bond of perfectness. — Col. 3:14.

Most all charity cryers deny Christian perfection, hence of course are destitute of Bible charity. Again, God says Charity suffereth long, and is kind, (it suffers a long time, and all along, and at last, is kind,) chanty envieth not, (charity cries, do you envy those who pour the truth on you?) Charity vaunteth not itself, is not. puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own; is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth. Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” — 1 Cor. 13:3-7.

Praise God for Bible charity that beareth all things, endureth all things, &c. It means something to have charity.

“And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, and to virtue knowledge, and to knowledge temperance, and to temperance patience, and to patience godliness, and to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness charity. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.” Beloved, be sure you have the real thing, true Bible charity,

—:o:—

BABEL, BABYLON.

—:o:—

And then came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither: I will show unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters, with whom the kings have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of the wrath of her fornication. So he carried me away in the spirit, into the wilderness, and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet color, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand, full of abomination and filthiness of her fornication. And upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon the Great, the Mother of harlots and abominations of the earth. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. — Rev. 17: 1-6.

We find the origin of typical babylon (babel) by refering to Gen. 11:1-10. “And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. And they said one to another, so to, let us make brick and burn them thoroughly. And they said go to, let us build us a city and a tower whose top may reach unto Heaven, and let us make us a name (like babylon of to day does) lest we be scattered. And the Lord came down to see the city and the lower which the children of men builded, (not built by God) and the Lord said, Behold, the people is one and they have all one language. And this they begin to do. And now nothing will be restrained from them which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down there and confound their language that they may not understand one-another’s speech. Ho the Lord scattered them abroad from (hence upon the face of all the earth, and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called babel (meaning confusion) because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth, and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.”

The foregoing Scripture tells us that before building the tower, the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech, but by not being satisfied, they said, let us make us a name lest we be scattered.

God says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways.” — Isa. 55:8. So then, as to-day, man’s way of unity is God’s way of division, and vice versa.

“So the Lord scattered them from thence upon the face of all the earth.” And they kept getting further away from God, doing worse and worse, and built the great city Babylon, until God declared in Isa. 47:1, “Come down and sit in the dust O virgin daughter of Babylon.” “Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen.” — 3rd verse. “Therefore hear now this thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly.” — 8th verse.

“For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness, thou hast said, none seeth me.” Vr. 10.

And again, some years afterward the prophet of God, Jeremiah, cries again in still stronger language, and says, “The word that the Lord spake against Babylon, Declare ye among the nations, and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not, say Babylon is taken.” For out of the North there cometh up a nation against (not with) her, which shall make her laud desolate.”

Bless God! By His grace we will “set up a standard,” (God’s Word) and make her land desolate.

Praise the Lord, beloved, this is God’s work. “Remove out of the midst of babylon.” — Jer. 50:8. “Put yourself in array against babylon round about, all ye that bend the bow shoot at her, spare no arrows, for she hath sinned against the Lord.” “Shoot against her round about, she hath given her hand, her foundations are fallen, her walls are thrown down, for it is the vengeance of the Lord. Take vengeance upon her; as she hath done do unto her, cut off the sower from babylon.” — Jon. 16:14-16.

Thus saith the Lord; Behold I will raise up against Babylon, against them that dwell in the midst of them that rise up against me, a destroying wind. And will send unto Babylon fanners that shall fan her, and shall empty her land.” Jer. 51: 1, 2. “Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed.”

Thus we see the rise and fall of babylon in Old Testament, and God’s servants commanded to “shoot at her,” “spare no arrows,” &c, and also God’s people commanded to remain out of the midst of her, and are found as the people were, “of one language” in the beginning, before the tower of Babel was built, so were God’s people after the day of Pentecost spiritually, and as God confused them in making unto themselves a name,” — and scattered them abroad, and afterward destroyed babylon of old; just so, when God’s people, since “Jesus Christ the Head of the Church which is His Body,” began to make unto themselves a name, some following Paul, others Apollos, Cephas, &c. And from these divisions to others, Methodist, Baptist, U. B., and on down to the Free Methodist, Holiness Church (sect) and many others. So now God is raising up a people, bless His holy name, to “torment babylon,” to “Cry aloud and spare not,” etc.

Jesus prayed to God the Father for His disciples, and “for them also which shall believe on me through their word.” “Sanctfy them through Thy truth, The Word is in” That they all may be one. — Joh 17:17—21. Carnality is the cause of division. — 1 Cor. 3:3, 4. Sanctification is the cure. Glory to Jesus! “He was manifest that He might destroy the works of the devil.”

On the day of Pentecost, “they were all with one accord.” “The multitude came together, and were confounded because that every man heard them speak in his own language.” — Acts 2:6.

And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul. — Acts 4:32.

And they continued daily with one accord, praising God, and having favor with all the people, and the Lord added to (he Church daily such as should be saved. — Acts 2:46, 47.

Thus the Church of God was “One Body,” until Babylon began to be builded. Man began to organize sects, preachers began to take authority to “open” and “close” the door; thereby receiving members who were unsaved, hence babylon is indeed a mixture of good and evil, and has been going from bad to worse, until “The angel from Heaven, cried mightily with a strong voice, sayings Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.” “And I heard another voice (My sheep know my voice. — John 10:4.) from Heaven saying, Come out of her my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.” — Rev. 18:1-4.

And as babylon of old fell, and God’s servants were to cry against her, so God requires the same today.

“Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double arcording to her works, in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.” “How much she hath glorified herself (in stead of giving God the glory) and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her. She shall be utterly burned with fire, for strong is the Lord who judgeth her. And the kings of the earth who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her shall bewail her, and lament for her when they shall see the smoke of her burning.” — Rev. 18: 8-10.

“Rejoice over her thou Heaven, and ye holy Apostles and Prophets.” — Vr. 20.

Well says one, “I don’t believe babylon means the denominations.” Babylon is a place where some of God’s people are, for He says, Come out of her my people, hence some of His people are in her.

Again, Babylon is a woman. – Rev. 17:3. The Church is also a woman, “The Bride of Christ.” Babylon is a false bride, because she is not the “Body of Christ,” she does not follow Jesus as a body, but in most part follows the world. She deceives people by claiming to be the Church, claims the Bible to be a sufficient rule of faith and practice, and at the same time having a discipline, human rules, &c. Shame on such deception of babylon!

Beloved, the greatest stumbling-block to straight Bible salvation work in existence is babylon. Then do not be afraid to cry against her. You that are still in doubt as to the sects being as bad as they are. trace their history back 100 years, look at their pride, Dude preachers. Go to their Annual Conferences, see the preachers with all the style of a banker, or ball room patron, putting on a fine, genteel appearance, to get a good, paying, easy salary. I know about this, have been there. Get out, out of babylon, and then get rid of all her deceitful ways and customs. Thy Bro. saved, and out of babylon.

Dear Brethren: — I am saved to the uttermost, sanctified wholly. I used tobacco for 30 years, yet for one year I was convinced that it was wrong; But the Lord has delivered me from it. We are having glorious meetings since sister Cole came back here; and souls are being saved at almost every meeting. I praise the Lord for salvation.

Dear Saints of God: — I feel led of the Lord to write my testimony. To-day finds me saved and rejoicing in my Savior who has done so much for me. He has brought me out of the mire and clay of sin, and placed my feet on the solid Rock, Christ Jesus. O praise His holy name for ever! I know I have passed from death unto life because I love the brethren. Glory to Jesus who has cleansed and made me whole. I have given up every thing for the sake of Christ, and am willing to follow and obey Him at all times. For I know if I prove faithful I will receive the crown that lies at the end of the race. I do praise God for salvation that keeps me free from all sin. The Word of God says that whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him neither known Him. — 1 John 3:6. It also says whose keepeth His Word in him verily is the love of God perfected. — 1 John 2:5. I do thank God for ever saving a poor vile sinner like me. I was down in the very depth of sin, but I came to Jesus and found Him so precious to my soul. Praise the Lord, the way is growing brighter every day. Last winter at Pleasant Grove Ind. I sought the Lord and He pardoned all my sins. O glory to Jesus, I received a wonderful blessing. I was also baptized.

The devil got me to doubting whether I was ever saved or not, and finally I got to going in bad company. I was almost as wicked as the devil could make me. I could have no rest neither day or night until I was redeemed and made whole. O hallelujah to God for ever! I am in the ocean of God’s love, filled with all the fullness of Christ. He is my all and in all and I am willing to follow Jesus at all times who is the way of light and truth.

O poor sinner do come to Jesus, He is waiting to save; and will fill you with all the fullness of His love. I am willing to work for the Lord and do any thing that He wants me to do. I am working in the TRUMPET OFFICE now. I am doing the Lords will at all times. Let us all live each moment so as to be ready to meet the Lord when He comes. I am saved and sanctified and filled with the Holy Spirit of God ready to be revealed in the last day. O praise the Lord for ever! Your Brother in Christ.

Dear Brethren in Christ: May God bless and keep you blameless in His love. Glory be to God for the free and full salvation that keeps me from all sin. I cannot thank God enough for saving my poor soul and giving me a willing heart to humble myself to all of His commandments; for I do feel we must be wholly saved and sanctified through the blood of the Lamb. The Word says: Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy Word is truth. As Thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth, — John 17:17-19. Now if we can sin every day, why was Christ crucified to redeem us from our sins. May God forbid all such doctrine. Your Brother save I sanctified and kept by the power of God.

St. James, Mo.

Dear Brethren: — I praise God for complete salvation. I was converted to God 15 years ago. In my ignorance I joined the Cumberland Presbyterian sect. I tried to live faithful, – but I felt there was surely a better way than we walked in. I was trying hard to gam a better experience. I had a terrible appetite for whiskey and tobacco. I had used the latter 42 year, I found that I had to be cleansed by the blood of Christ from all unrighteousness. I was six months consecrating myself to God. Finally God sent the holiness teachers to our place. Thank God! One of them took the Bible and showed me the way that I made a complete consecration and entered in. Instantly God took away the appetite for tobacco and whiskey, and cleansed my heart from all sin. And He has fully saved me ever since. That was the first Monday of last October.

The Lord also healed me from rheumatism. I am fully trusting Him for health salvation and all things. Praise the Lord!

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

—:o:—

Near Chanute, Kan. Aug. 19.

Dearly beloved saints everywhere. It seems as distance stretches out between us, and the dear loved ones with whom we have so often, and joyfully worshipped God, that the love of God in our hearts is drawing us hearer together. I never have felt the. blessed, pure love of God so intensely burning in my heart for the dear household of God, as lately. I can scarcely write to the beloved saints without tears dim my eyes. O my dearly beloved, we can feel your daily fervent prayers in our behalf; and all our company desire to thank you for the same.

Glory be to Jesus! We want to testify to the goodness of God. The above lines were written by a very sick man, but now we continue writing, a well man. O praise the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. From early morn until 3 P.M. to-day, we were very sick, unable to eat. Tried to write, but had to take the bed. Finally the Lord impressed us with earnest prayer, called the little company, and we kneeled before God, and O our dear Heavenly Father instantly healed my body, took away all bad feeling, raised my voice from the faint tones of a person just beginning to rise from a hard sick spell, to clear loud shouts of praise. He also sent through our entire system the strength of high leaps, as well as the high praises of God. O glory be to Jesus! He fills all our hearts with joy and gladness.

After our last report we held one more meeting in the vicinity of St James. After a short discourse the work of consecration and salvation was in order, and it continued until 11 o’clock at night. A number of souls were saved. The next day Bro. J. and sister Mary Cole, brother Night and our little company took train for Carthage, over 200 miles more to the Southwest. After following a little valley for some time, we came to ten miles up grade, and landed on the summit of the wild bushy Mo. hills. It seemed strange that the hand of God should make a natural way for the swift chariots, high on the top of the hills. But so He prepared for His ministers to fly in the midst of Heaven, having the everlasting Gospel to preach unto them that dwell upon the earth. Our eyes could take in the surrounding country, and overlook the lesser hills much as though soaring up in the air. Far below us lay packed together innumerable hills whose round tops gave the appearance of a large fan of well raised biscuit.

Most of the land is poor, and covered with scrub oak. Here and there a house and small farm in the little valleys, and occasionally crops were attempted on the up lands, but the corn was all prematurely burned up by the drought. Near Springfield Mo. we came to a more pleasant country. The Southwest corner of Mo. for over a hundred miles is a beautiful country. Crops were moderately good, but much effected by dry weather.

Carthage is quite a beautiful town, the County-seat of Jasper Co. Here we were met at the station about nine o’clock at night, by several saints who were not afraid to praise God aloud for our coming.

O praise the name of Jesus! We had a joyful gathering, and were soon taken to places of rest for the night.

The Jasper Go. holiness people have a good sized tabernacle winch they had kindly pitched for the meeting, at the edge of the beautiful little city. Our hearts were grateful to God for the use of this good pavilion. Here we had full liberty to preach the whole counsel of God. The Lord brought to this meeting a goodly number of holiness workers and teachers, some of whom were from Ill. Bro. and sister Sunderland, Bro. and sister Howell, and Bro. Brittin are in the field with a tabernacle, and expect soon to go to Indian territory. God bless their dear souls we enjoyed their fellowship and hope to meet again on the battle field of time, or in. the grand review of Heaven. We met a large number of holiness people, and Workers, mostly dear good souls, some of them much mixed and confused with babylon wine, and scarcely any possessing New Testament authority to execute judgment. The holiness elements here reminded its very much of the inter-babylonian work we passed through ten and eleven years ago. Only these are about all outside the sect pales, and then nearly all were in. But the sect education largely remains here, and some have the very wine of babylon, insomuch that they plead for confusion, justify contrarities, and think men are saved when filled with doctrines and spirits of devils, and because they are filled with the shaky works of babylon, they do not blush to publicly assert that very body is shaky. Such are poor spiritual dyspeptics, have no relish for the Word of God, and are inclined to think any one who is qualified by the light of God to teach beyond what they know, is a dangerous character. But the most of the dear little ones were grateful to God for the precious light they received, and testified that they were much strengthened. The holiness work all through the West is in a transition state. Having fled out of the sects, they have not yet become delivered from the confusion of her conflicting creeds, and settled down on the pure Word of God. They have not yet come to the “unity of the faith, and the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man.” And some have enough of her wine to oppose the lifting up of the New Testament standard, which requires that we “all speak the same thing, and be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.”

Notwithstanding the Spirit was occasionally grieved by tongues of confusion, the meeting was a glorious victory. Every discordant tongue was rebuked in the name of Jesus. Our soul was wonderfully blessed of God in “Contending for the faith once delivered to the saints. O it is glorious and sweet to be all the Lord’s, and to have the witness of God in the soul that we are walking in the light as He is in the light in all purity and truth. The special object of this meeting was the teaching of the dear willing and obedient hearts the way of truth more fully, and by the help of the Lord we served out large dishes of the Word. One night we began about half past eight and held forth until eleven o’clock. The last night we had an ordinance meeting, the tabernacle was crowded with people, but the mighty Spirit of God held an in quiet and respectful attention. Praise the Lord! The saints generally obeyed the commands of Christ, and were blessed in the deed, but wo felt a slight restraint in the Spirit, because this obedience to the Words of Jesus was not entire, and uniform. O it is good and salt to the soul to take Jesus at His own words, both in His promises, and in all His commands, and act accordingly. If we act as though His promises are not … they do not become fulfilled in us. So likewise it we act as though He did act mean what He commanded, we never can fully know of the truth respecting the things, nor obtain the blessings taught in them.

We are thankful to God for His rich blessings upon this meeting. Several souls were joyfully converted to God, and still more wholly sanctified. Doubtless more might have been reported saved, had not the much teaching that was needed sometimes left no time for altar service. But the truth received in the hearts of the people is able to save their souls, and also qualify them to lead others into the pure way of deliverance. Glory to Jesus! We never shall forget the true, and beloved saints at Carthage, truly our hearts are knit together in love, and when far away in body we shall still be with them in spirit, joying and be holding their order, and the steadfastness of their faith. Though no collection was taken up for us, as we never do allow any, nor nothing was said publicly about giving us the dearly beloved in the Lord were mindful of their duty toward the Lord and His Gospel, and gave us quite liberally of the Lord’s means in their a ids. The Lord Jesus will richly reward them for all their kindness. We had a very melting farewell greeting, and a large host of dear saints are left behind whose prayers will follow us, and whose dear faces will not be forgotten, till we meet on high.

Dear Bro. McCulley, having come over from Chanute with a double buggy, took dear Bro. Night and Bro. and sister Cole. While our little company took train Aug. 18, still onward toward the setting Sun, past Jopland, a lead and zinc mining place and soon found ourselves in Kansas. The country is a beautiful fertile prairie. The corn is nearly all as dry as we ever saw it in Ohio and Ind, in the month of October, owing to the drought, which was heavy here last year and this. But a great deal of the corn seems to be pretty well eared here, but is doubtless imperfectly filled.

Of late they have had good rains, and every thing is freshing up pleasantly. We landed at dear sister Swartz’s, near Thayer, last evening, where we take a little rest until to-morrow when they will take us ten miles to Chanute, where the Camp-meeting begins to day. Praise God for His great goodness toward us. Let all saints continue to pray for us. We all send our love to you all in the anointed Jesus.

Payne, O., Arg. 24, 1887.

Dear Brethren: — God bless and preserve yon from evil. Praise the Lord for His manifold blessings to the children of men. Glory to God I am fully saved in Jesus just now. Well after the close of the Beaver Dam Camp meeting, we went with Bro. Speck and some of the saints of Beaver Dam to the grove meeting in Grant Co. near Sweetser, Ind. Here we did not only meet with the dear saints of that place, but with some of the saints from Randolph Co. Ind., and with dear Brother Schell of Versailes, O. Praise God! The good Lord wonderfully blessed the saints and the loud shouts of praise to God rang out through the forest and was a terror to hypocrites and the source of much grumbling to deluded sectarians. The whole meeting was a feast of fat things, and it was a wonderful joyous time on the Lord’s day, “the great day of the feast.” After the forenoon service a goodly number of the saints went to Bro. Wm. Bragg’s house to partake of some refreshments and being called to dinner all that could get around the table sat down. Bro. Speck called on the Lord to bless the food before us and closed by asking the Lord to bless Bro. and Sister Bragg for their kindness to the saints. Bless the Lord! It was no sooner asked than done, and sister Bragg began to shout and praise God. Soon Bro. B. and most all the saints who were not at the table, began leaping and praising God with a loud voice, and some of the saints at table sprang up, leaping and praising God and the residue sanctioned what was going on by many hearty amens. This lasted some minutes before there was a calm. Well dinner being over, we went to the grove again to worship God, and soon the Spirit was manifested in the saints by their wonderful leaping and praising God in which both young and old, male and female engaged. O, it was wonderful, wonderful the glory of God that was manifested that day! O glory to God, the devil had no put in, during the entire meeting. There were four converted and seven sanctified. To God be all the glory for ever. Amen!

Grand Junction, Mich.

To the Saints of God that are scattered abroad, greeting. Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen!

I feel led of the Lord to testify to the dear saints of God that the blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, cleanseth me from all sin, and sanctifies me wholly just now.

O I praise God for the sweet peace I have in my soul, which flows like a river, and the Comforter which is the Holy Spirit, that enables me to preach the Gospel of out Lord Jesus Christ.

Leaving our home on the 17th of July, wife and myself and daughter, with Bro. F. B. Smith, sisters Mina Philips and Clara Morrison composing our company, met at Covert with the dear saints. God blessed us in reading the Word, and we had a glorious victory in the meeting. After meeting we were called to visit sister Pompey who was sick. Wife and I went and asked the Lord to heal her. The mighty healing power came down and touched her body, and she was enabled to praise the Lord with us.

On Monday we took our leave for Berian Springs, and in the evening we preached on the street, with good attention. The Word was received gladly. We continued five nights, three nights in the beautiful grove in the Court-yard. The people were anxious for us to stay and continue, but having promised the saints at Walkerton and Teegarden a few days visit, we felt it our duty to go; but we are praying God to send some one to that place in the near future. On Saturday morning we left dear Bro. Reed, who gave us a home and cared for us. O may the Lord bless him for all his kindness to us.

On Saturday evening we met at dear Bro. Morehead’s, in Walkerton, where the saints came together, greeting eachother and praising the Lord. After reading the Word with much joy in our soul, and the saints were refreshed. During testimony we found a man that was full of demons which caused him to froth and growl. It was a strange scene to us, but we looked to the Lord, and in the name of Jesus we

Page 3

laid our lands on him and demanded the devils to come out of him, and he was sweetly delivered; repented of his sins, and testified that they were all forgiven.

The next day we met at Bro. Barden’s, where we had a glorious victory, a number consecrated, and were sweetly saved.

We continued in the neighbor-hood, and at the Buffalo School-house, where dear Bro. Warner sowed the seed last Spring. And we find many dear hungry souls which are eager for salvation. O may God remove all the mists of babylon away from the people that they may see the blessed evening light, and get under the blood.

On the 3rd of Aug. we took our leave for the Camp-meeting at Beaver Dam. Having driven all night, we reached dear Bro. Leiningers in the morning. They were aroused while at the morning meal with a holy song; the table was left vacant, and we were met at the gate with holy shouts of praise to our God. O how sweet it is to meet with God’s dear children and have our hearts flow together, when all under the blood. After taking a few hours rest, we went to the beautiful grove which was all prepared, and O how our hearts burned within us as we drew near. Victory was ours from the beginning to the end. The devil had no part nor lot in the meeting; all that came on the ground who were not straight with God, either had to get under the blood, or leave the camp. Praise God! Sinners can not sit in the congregation of the righteous. Sinners were converted, and believers, sanctified. Such a holy element was constantly in the meeting, that sinners were compelled to-hold their peace.

Dear Bro. George, from Southern Ind., and Bro. Reed from Ill., and many others were wondrously and gloriously saved by the mighty power of God.

May God bless you all with all the riches of His grace.

S. Michels.

Bangor, Mich, Aug. 16, 1887.

Dear Brethren: — Grace, mercy, and peace be with you all. Amen!

Well I do praise God for the wonderful, sweeping victory we had at the Beaver Dam Camp-meeting. Bro’s. A. J. Kilpatrick, S. Michels, S. L. Speck and Williams, brethren in the ministry, were there, and let the Word on the people with such power and convincing force, that very many fell upon their knees before the Lord. Many were converted, many sanctified, and many edified. We kept no account of the consecrations, but would estimate it at least 100. There were a number of consecrations at each altar service; perfect harmony from the beginning to the end among the brethren. O praise God for the sweet fellowship of the saints. There were a number from a distance. Bro. Reed from Onarga, Ill. consecrated as a sinner, found pardon, and afterward for entire sanctification; he returned to his home filled with the fire, declaring that he never had such an experience before. Brother and sister Byers from Albany, Ill. were also much blessed in their souls, and felt well paid for coming so far. Bro. J. A. Peacock, from Terre Haute, Ind., who formerly leaned toward Babylon “Stumbling Stone” after being detected by the Spirit, came to the altar and begged for mercy, found peace, then went down under the blood and had the preacher taken out of him accepted the ordinances, was baptized in water, and publicly endorsed the GOSPEL TRUMPET, which he had formerly renounced. O praise the Lord for the way He handed the dear brother, He went home completely emptied of self and filled with the glory of God. O brethren, let us pray that God will ever bless and keep him, and we him in the salvation of many souls, by putting a new preacher in him.

Dear Bro. George, from Southern Ind. got fully saved; God grant that he may retain the first that he may spread the light in that part of the country.

The Church at Beaver Dam is full of the Holy Ghost ad fire. Their zeal and salvation does in consist only in shouting, and praising God, but they have mixed with it a zeal to spread the work by their means. We as God to bless them for their love toward us, in caring for us, and administering to us financially.

My testimony I am wholly saved by the power of God sanctified, meet for the Master’s use.

A. B. Palmer.

Payne, O.

After the meetings Grant Co. Ind., on our way to the Jerry City Camp-meeting, we stopped at Smiley O, to be with the saints on the 23 and 24: our short stay with them was to the glory of God, and the salvation of poor deluded souls that had been led away from the fold of God about two years ago. Tuesday eve we met at Bro. Wm. Airgood’s house, where we saw the salvation of the Lord. After the good Lord had finished speaking through us the awful Word of God, we had testimony meeting and about the close of the same we gave all that felt burdened with sin the opportunity to come to the Lord. Well bless God, three made their way amid the press, and came to the Lord, and the goodness of God was shown unto them, to the pardon of all their sins. The three poor souls were under the influence of a certain person, but when God showed them that they did not have the love of God in their souls, they were willing to renounce all such works as being of the devil. At ten A. M. we had meeting at the same plate: there God gave us a red not message to deal out to them, how people ought to live in order to please God. During our discourse the powers of hell seemed to be present in such force that we thought no one would be saved in that meeting; but after the saints and those who were out of the way began to tell what the Lord had done for them, and how the devil had turned some from the line of God, the darkness began to give way. Then the Spirit of God led us to put out an altar which we did in the name of the Lord, and about six came; some for pardon and some for sanctification.

After altar services everything seemed to be as clear as Heaven. Hallelujah to God and the Lamb for salvation in our soul that makes our heart glad when we see poor souls escape the power of the devil. Wednesday night we had meeting at dear Bro. J. O. Moore’s house. There the good Lord met with us in power. After we got through telling what God could do for all that would come to Him, seven came to the altar, and there the Lord did fill them with His love and set their souls at liberty from the influence of the devil.

In the three meetings we held there, 16 came to the Lord, some for pardon, and some for sanctification. About eight of the number were taken out of the delusion into which they had gone about; two years ago, by following the above mentioned false teacher. After they got free, their faces shone with the Spirit of God. O it did our soul good to see them get free from all the works of the devil.

A good work could be done in that place could we have stayed longer, but we could not, for we had to go to the Jerry City Camp-meeting. The Lord willing, we shall come to them again in the near future and do all we can for the salvation of souls that are in sin in that place. Bro. A. J. Kilpatrick was with us; the dear Bro. did rejoice to see those dear ones come back to the Lord from whom they had gone.

Amen!

My testimony is to-day, that I am saved by the blood of the Lamb from all sin, and filled with the Holy Spirit, ready to do the will of God in all things. Pray for us dear saints. Your Bro. in the Body of Christ.

Samuel.

It has been some time since I have written for the “Trumpet,” but its columns have been filled with good live matter, so it has been unnecessary for me to write. But an article recently from Bro. Warner on the subject oi “Freeloveism” induced me to take up the pen, not to add any thing to that excellent blast of the “Trumpet,” but to say that that article will stop the mouths of those who have been casting Freeloveism and Mormonism at the saints all over this section.

It appears that the woman in question did claim that the saints did not need to marry &c. But bless God, these things do not change the blessed truths of the Gospel. They remain like the everlasting hills. Amen!

I want to further commend that article, because while personal, it left names out. It seems to me that the mentioning of names in preaching, and in articles should as much as possible be dispensed with.

The glorious work of the Lord is moving onward! O what hath the Lord wrought in the last decade. Ten years ago sectism and churchism was swallowed by nearly all but there has been a mighty move since then. Men are beginning to think, and some are beginning to act. Glory to God! The time of the end is drawing near, Many are “Running to and fro, and knowledge is being increased.” Men are mad about education. The fearful disasters on Railroads all go to show that the end is not far distant. The people will not endure sound doctrine: but heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears. O what a terrible reckoning there will be when Jesus comes. What a mighty work remains to be accomplished yet, and how little is being done: how the hands of God’s people are tied. People will not hear, or hearing, they will not believe. O that a mighty avalanche of God’s power would sweep all o’er this land, and the refuge of lie’s behind which sectarianism and church-ism hides would be utterly swept away, and that the blessed Gospel of Jesus find a place in every heart.

Brethren push on and on, press the battle to the very gates of the enemy. One of these days Jesus will come Even so, Come Lord Jesus. Your Bro. in Christ.

Dear Brethren: — I am still resting in Jesus. The Word says, “They that receive the abundance of grace, and the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one Christ Jesus.” O praise God! I am saved by grace Divine, and am reigning in life.

We had a grove meeting here. It commenced June 26. and lasted three weeks. All the little ones who had fallen were reclaimed and brought back into the fold, and the dear-Lord added a few more to the Church. The good seed has been sown here, and now the harvest time has come.

O may God send His angels to gather the wheat into His garner.

O praise the Lord! We will stand for God. I am just ready to do His will at all times. I am saved and sanctified, and ready to be revealed in the last time. I suffer many persecutions, but the Word says, “They that will Jive godly in Christ Jesus must suffer persecution.” O praise God! I am willing to suffer anything for Christ’ sake; for He has saved and redeemed me from the power of the grave, and I have the victory over death. Q glory to God and the Lamb forever and ever! O dear ones I ask you to pray for me, and all the rest of the little ones at this place, that they may stand firm unto the end.

We have prayer meetings twice a week, and the Lord is still working. Some of the people call us crazy, when the power of God comes down and illuminates our souls, but it is a good thing to be called crazy for the sake of Jesus. Your sister in Christ

Dear Brethren: — My testimony is that I am saved and sanctified, and kept by the power of God. I prayed the Lord to open the way for me to get to the Beaver Dam Camp-meeting, and Sabbath morning we started. On the way from Akron, I felt the hand of God over me. When on the camp ground it was so perfect that I could not tell what was wrong until Tuesday night. O how the Word did fill my heart, and when Bro. Michels preached on sectarian baptism, it seemed that I could see the Word in full, between him and me. O praise the Lord for a teacher. O the love and joy that has filled my soul, joy that cannot be told. I am so glad, I cannot express myself. Praise God for the true light of the Gospel. This Scripture was shown me clearly, “How can they learn without a teacher.” I cannot tell the strength and blessing I received. May the Lord bless all the dear saints. Your Bro. and sister in Christ.

Dear Brethren: — I wish to give my experience through the TRUMPET. I am saved and cleansed by the precious blood of Jesus, which was shed upon the cross to redeem poor perishing souls. Yes, He shed His blood for you and I, and for all who are willing to be saved by Him; and yet there are so many who reject the precious Savior who suffered so much for them. O let all the saints of God pray for the poor lost souls. And I ask the prayers of the saints in behalf of my brothers and sisters who are yet all unsaved, and are against me. O may I soon see the joyful day when they will turn and be saved, and walk with me in the high way of holiness. O it is so sweet to have the peace, of God in the soul. I once enjoyed this rest a few years ago, but by failing to trust God, and not living near enough to the cross, I lost my enjoyment, and was in trouble and darkness until this summer. I gave myself up to God again, and found peace and rest. The 25th of June I found pardon of alt my sins, and was justified. I thought I had been living a justified life till then, but I found that I was a sinner. I cried to God for mercy, and glory be to God! He washed away my sins. Then two days later, the 27th, He sanctified me. When I gave up all, He filled me with His peace, and praise His holy name, it has been glory in my soul ever since. I love to read the testimonies of the saints of God, and hear what the Lord is doing for His people. Glory be to Jesus for His love and mercy which endureth forever. Praise the Lord O my soul, and all that is within me bless His holy name. The Lord says, “My grace is sufficient for you, I will be with you, saith the Lord.” Amen!

Your sister, saved, sanctified and trusting in Jesus for all things.

Dear Brethren: — I am saved through the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. O I am settled down in Christ, saved from all the confusion of babylon, and everything contrary to the Divine will of Him who has established my soul in Christ. I am standing on solid ground, saved, sanctified and kept by the power of God. We had a grand meeting at father Elder’s to-day. O how our hearts were filled to meet dear Bro. and sister Griggs, and to find them so filled with the Spirit of God.

Dearly beloved: I have a request to make to all the brethren, in the name of the Lord. It is this: we have a brother here that is on a bed of affliction with the consumption, and he says he must die. He needs help to pay his rent, and to keep his family. He has a wife and two children, and at the present the County is keeping them. We ought to see that our brother is provided for, and not put on the Co.

O I do praise God for this full and free salvation that keeps me from all sin. I feel that I cannot praise Him enough for what He has done for me. I am standing on the solid Rock Christ Jesus, ready to do the will of God in all things. Your Bro., saved and kept by the power of God.

I am led to give in my testimony. Glory to God! I am saved by the blood of the Lamb, yes sanctified, and healed. O I feel like a new creature. Praise the Lord for a full salvation! I was like a plant that had been transplanted: I had wilted, but am now growing brighter than ever. Glory to Jesus! I was healed of a cancer at the close of the Beaver Dam Camp meeting, for which I give God all the glory. And may many more be saved and healed is the prayer of your sister, saved and sanctified. Praise the Lord.!

Dear Brethren: — My testimony is that I am saved and sanctified. O I feel I have forsaken all for Christ’ sake. My soul doth magnify my faithful God. Like a little child I have looked into the Bible for instruction, and O what an inexpressible glory has beamed therefrom. I have received Christ as a Savior from all sin..; a present and ever loving Savior.

O I do praise God that I am free from all sect straps. Truly I can now say the Holy Spirit has led me into the truth, and the truth has made me free. I no longer feel like a wanderer, but like a child at home. My soul now rests in Christ, and finds His yoke easy and His burden light. I now commit all my interests, temporal and Spiritual into His hands, and feel that they are safe. My greatest desire is to know, and to do the will of my Heavenly Father. May the time speedily come when all darkness and prejudice shall flee away and God’s Church become the light of the world. Your Sister, under the blood.

OBITUARY.

—:o:—

Our dear Bro. J. B. Slagle departed this life the 8th of August. His sicknes was short, and his death sudden, but Jesus did not come to him as a thief in the night. No, no, he was watching and waiting, ready to be revealed. He shouted the praises of God amid his affliction. He said, “My work is cut short, but God’s will be done, I am ready.” And while his friends were weeping he said with a sweet smile, “I do not feel like crying, I am consecrated to God, to glorify His name whether by life or death.”

He lived a godly life every day. He leaves a wife and child, parents and sisters to mourn. O may they follow him as he followed the Lord.

He said, a short time before he took sick that he felt as, though he would never die, that he would only change worlds. He was blessedly saved. We miss him much, but God’s will be done. He was 27 years old, was sanctified four years ago. Dear Bro. John is at home, at rest with Jesus, while we are left in the battle field, but all things work together for good to them that love the Lord. Glory to His holy name for such promises.

Sallie Rogers.

A WORD ON BUSINESS.

The large TRUMPET building, having a cellar under the whole of it, walled with stone, except about two feet above ground which was wailed with timber, which being much decayed, had to be removed and the space filled up with stone.

This work has just been accomplished at a much greater cost than was expected, and there is need of financial help at this time. Let all who are in arrears on subscription send the amount if possible, and renew your subscription. If any one has a little of the Lord’s means to spare, you will find the blessing of Go! upon your souls, and bring cheer and gratitude to the hearts of the dear little ones in the Office to send help. The liberal soul shall be blessed. Amen!

“Jesus said unto them feed my Lambs.”

Loving words the shepherd said —
Let the little Lambs be fed;
Let the children come to me
They shall my salvation see.

Hear the tender Shepherd say
Precious words to Lambs to-day –
Close to me dear children keep.
Thus I love find guard my sheep.

Set your heart on things divine –
Place your little hands in mine –
Then so safely you will go
Through this world of sin and woe.

In the dark, and in the light,
Through the day and through the night,
Ever shall my sleepless eye
Watch you as the years go by.

Safe and happy — O how blesst!
Those who find in Jesus rest!

Wisdom’s paths are paths of peace.

TEACH YOUR CHILDREN THE LORD.

-:o:-

DEARLY beloved readers of the Gospel Trumpet: — There is a subject, that has long been resting heavily upon my heart, and one to which I have given much thought. And I earnestly pray God will impress upon your hearts and minds what He may give to say on this subject. It is concerning the great neglect in the part of (he parents toward their children. Parents, you that are unsaved, your first duty toward God, yourself, and your children is to give yourself to the Savior who has died for you that, you might be saved; and he will save to I he uttermost, all that will come unto Him by faith. And when you are saved completely, then, and only then are you capable of bringing up your children in the way they should go. And dear unsaved parents, have you over given this subject the thought that upon you depends in a great measure the morality and Christianity of the generations to come: and what are you-doing to make the world better for having lived in it? Are you teaching your children the way to love and serve the Lord? No you are nor, for you cannot do that, except you know the way yourself; for the Scripture says. “The husbandman that laboreth must first be partakers of the fruit.” So dear ones, give your hearts to Jesus that you may be able when the Master comes to deliver up an account of your stewardship with joy.

And now to you dear saints who are fathers and mothers of children do I feel led to say a few words on this great subject, to which I fear many of you have not given sufficient thought, for we see the children of saints, many ot them at least, that are growing up without a knowledge of the plan of salvation. It is true you take them to meeting sometimes; but you ought not to expect their young minds to take in, and comprehend the deep things of the Scriptures. The Gospel needs to be simplified and brought down to where they can grasp it. And now the question is what is the best way to do this? I am fully persuaded in my own mind, and have been looking to the Lord about the matter, and believe it is high time to awake out of sleep, and not allow your dear children to grow up without the proper instruction. I know a great many will be surprised when they read this; for you will say, Do not our children. have the benefit of hearing the Scripture read morning and evening, and hearing us pray. Very true, but how often we have observed while the parents were reading the Scripture lesson that the children would be looking around unconcerned and not noticing what the parents were reading. It is impossible to interest the children unless you make them feel you have an interest in them, and talk and read to them personally, and explain the Scripture in a simple manner which their young minds can comprehend. For instance, fake the story of the cross and give it to them in your own language-tell them about the birth, life and death of the Savior, and you can make an impression upon their minds which they will not forget. While the child is young is the time to mould its disposition: for you remember that as the twig is bent the tree is inclined, and if its mind is stored with good and holy thoughts if will cause the mind to expand in that direction. But if the child is left to itself it will naturally imbibe evil, and the evil will by cultivated in it; for the mind is carnal, and evil is the most natural. Therefore, we ought to double our diligence and earnestness to teach them good.

Now dear ones, I hope you, will not think for a moment that I am upholding the theory that you can bring up a child in religion so they will not have to be converted; for I do not believe that, neither do I believe it is possible to obtain salvation without thorough conviction, and an entire yielding up of the will and all things to God, and going down under the blood. But I do believe we can cultivate the minds of the children to receive the truth. Look at the poor Catholic children who are reared up in the papal faith, and see how rarely you will find one that has been converted to God and to leave their old superstition. And may we not be as successful in teaching our children the right way as they are the false, if we work as faithfully as they? We know that you who have farms to attend, and a great deal of all kinds of work, have not the time to spend in instructing your children that you need, and that they ought to have.

What is to be done? Shall we let it go on as it has been going? Or shall we lay aside our superstitious notions concerning Sabbath schools, and provide for the children teachers who are filled with the love of Jesus and the power of God, who will take an interest in the work and who are apt to teach. I know some will say, If we go to having Sunday schools, and dividing the children off into classes, we will be making a sect, because that is the way the sects do. But not so: for if it were true in this case, it would be true also in regard to our other meetings. Must we forsake the assembling of ourselves together for the worship of God because the sects meet together in a similar manner? No. Paul says in Heb. 10:25, that we should not “forsake the assembling of ourselves together as the manner of some is, but so much the more as we see the day approaching.”

Dear ones let us consider this matter well, and take it to the Lord in prayer, and see whether you are doing your duty by your children, and if you are employing every possible means elevating their minds into the higher life with God.

Now because I am speaking in favor of Sabbath school, do not think that I believe in the Sabbath school work as it is carried on by the sects, for I do not. I believe they are doing the children more harm than good. By promising them presents they get the children to study their lesson leaves which are mostly filled up with the opinions and doctrines of learned men who are utterly destitute of the Spirit of God. They also get up a strife between them to see which shall be the greatest. This is not good, they ought to work because they love it, and they will love it if the proper care is taken in teaching them. We have no use for lesson leaves, commentaries or opinions of men which are given without the aid of the Holy Spirit, but take the Word of God and let them read it, and let some one be appointed over them to teach them who will be capable of leading them to the Lord. Let them be graded into classes of different ages, so there will be no time lost, nor any neglected; but that all in the class may be able to comprehend the teaching. If children of different ages are all together in one class, the little ones will be neglected.

Now dear saints do not do as the disciples did when they rebuked the mothers for bringing their children to Jesus. But remember that Jesus said, “Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not for of such is the kingdom of Heaven.”

How I pray you dear ones do not cast this carlessly aside without being aroused to a sense of your duty, lest you as the disciples should be forbiding them to come.

Allie R. Fisher.

NOTE.

I have read the above and find no fault. It, is very evident that some of the saints meetings should be brought down lo the capacity of the children. This should by no means be neglected. Let one service be given to them every sabbath, if possible, or every other Sabbath. O teach your dear children to love the Lord, and early secure their salvation.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD.

—:o:—

Chippewa, Ont June 7, 1887.

Dear Brethren: — Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ, Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulations, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounded by Christ. And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. For we would not. brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us, that we were pressed out of measure, insomuch that we despaired even of life. But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust, that He will yet deliver us. Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many prayers, thanks may be given by many on our behalf. As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are ours in the day of the Lord Jesus.

These beautiful words of truth, consolation and comfort to the Christians in St Paul’s writings to the Church of God for the Corinthian brethren in his day, are for the dear brethren in Christ to-day. So I do feel and realize as never before are for me. His very unworthy servant, and worm of the dust as I feel I am, of late, since I have been called to pass through the fiery furnace of affliction, conflicts and trials for Jesus. I am now made meet, and better prepared to work for the blessed Lord and Master, in the vineyard than before I went into the furnace and crucifixion with Jesus, who had to drink the bitter cup for us, down in the garden of Gethsemane. He knows very well how to bring His own through the fire, even as He has me. Bless His holy name!

This is my experience, and the language of my heart, in this holy war for Jesus, who to-day is my priest and king, my all and in all. Praise His holy name forever and ever! Amen!

I never felt such a sinking out of self into God as at the present time, and being true to Jesus my Savior, in this age of the world, amid so many empty shams, false religions, and isms and creeds of men. When the creature is worshipped in stead of the Creator, who would have all men serve Him, and Him alone; and stand up for Jesus who is the Way, the truth, and the life, as I am endeavoring to do by the help of the Lord. I have been standing up for Jesus in Queenston, Ontario, 10 miles from where I live. I spent two weeks last winter in that place, where I was blest of the Lord, doing my duty, letting my light shine for Jesus, and convinced two Methodist families that the sects were wrong, by reading to them the 51st chapter of Jeremiah.

I went two weeks ago last Sunday to the United Mennonite’s sect, five miles from home, near Black Creek. Heard their preacher give a dead, formal sermon to his flock. After he got through, Tasked for the privilege of speaking for Jesus against sectarianism. I was greatly helped and blessed of the Lord in reading to them the Word of the Lord, and expounding it to them. The preacher afterward got up and warned his people against me.

I got up before he closed, and announced that I would hold a meeting for Jesus at 3 o’clock in the after-noon, in Bro. David Lee’s house. Who with his dear companion are both out of the United Mennonite sect, and following Jesus only.

In the 3 o’clock meeting, strange to say, this very same preacher who opposed me in the morning, also another preacher of the same sect, with a goodly number of his sect members, were out: and some from the U. B. and Lutheran sects.

The Lord gave me a message to deliver for Him. Had real liberty and freedom in Jesus. This preacher who was so opposed to me, and others with him, got all broken down before the Lord in the testimony meeting, after preaching and reading God’s holy Word, as the Spirit helped me. Prejudice gave way, and I got complete victory in Jesus, who had His way among us.

One man, a member of the U. B. sect, made a new start to serve the Lord, He came to me after meeting, and said this was the only way to Hoaven. The preacher who was so prejudiced against me, apologized to me, after the Lord blest him in testimony, and asked me to call on him at his home and work for Jesus. The other preacher said also that he wanted to call on me. Brother and sister Lee were wonderfully encouraged to go on, and love and serve the Lord. Sister Lee gave me a dollar for the GOSPEL TRUMPET. They like its teachings very much, as does the writer

One week ago last Sabbath, held meeting for Jesus near Lenwick, some 17 miles from my home. One old brother who is out straight for Christ, was greatly blessed in soul, and healed in body; and a sister in Jesus fell, prostrated by the power of God. Had one of the best times I ever had in doing my duty to the Church. Since then, we have been holding a few meetings for the Lord at Elcho. Last Sabbath we assisted sister white and the brethren at Elcho, in a grove meeting. At three o’clock when quite a goodly number of people came out, a load of young converts from Perry Station (where sister White has been laboring for the Master with good success, there having been 16 saved,) came, and added much to the interest of the meeting, by their beautiful singing and testimonies for Jesus. Six of them went back greatly encouraged to follow the Lord. One of the load got, liberated in Jesus, and went back rejoicing, with victory in the soul.

Sister White had charge of the meeting, had great liberty in speaking for the Lord. Others had a good time, myself especially

Praise the Lord for His goodness to me. Surely He is a great physician for both soul and body, and a very present, help in time of trouble. Bless His holy name forever more! I love to work for Jesus.

The work is quite new, and the people poor, most of them. It is quite a trial and test of my faith, with a wife and four children to care for. The Lord is good to me in blessing me as He has of late, in soul and body. The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. Pray for me, that my faith fail not, that I may not get weary in well doing. And pray for sister White, that her labors may be owned and blessed of God, and for the good work in Ontario. that it may go on as never before.

From your brother in Jesus.

Dear Brethren: — I write this testimony for Jesus. I have long felt this a duty I owed to God. Some six years ago I was laid on a bed of pain with the erysipelas in my right hand. The pain being so severe that it dethroned my reason and I knew nothing of passing events for eight days. The attending physician, an aged man, has said that I am the only living woman that he ever saw die and get alive. It pleased God to restore me again to health. Praise the Lord O my soul, and all that is within me bless His holy name forever and ever 1 I had been a member of the M. E. sect: but soon after this holiness unto the Lord began to be preached, and I knew that what they taught corresponded with the Bible, I left the sect that bishop Foster called an empty pompous fraud; and so it is, for there is no sins committed outside of her that is not committed in her. I praise God today that I am cleansed out of her, and I belong to the Church of the Frst born whose mines are written in Heaven. My feet are firmly planted on the Rock and I am going on to know and to do the will of Him who has washed and redeemed the with His own blood. The willing and obedient shall eat the good of the land, and in no other way can we please Him better, and bring answers of joy and peace into our souls. I am praising God this evening for victory.

Your Sister saved and sanctified wholly,

Dear Brethren: I do truly praise the Lord for full salvation. I was taken very ill with Bronchitis and my cough was severe and constant; my friends called a doctor in without my desire and ho gave me medicine which made me very sick. I told him it did, and he changed it twice but still I got very sick. I told the doctor I did not want to take it any longer and he gave his consent. I then sent, for my good brother William Palmer who lives at Creagers Town Frederick Co. Md and he came and read the last chapter of James then prayed for me, anointing me with oil, and I felt the all healing power of God which has healed ray body and filled my soul with His perfect love. I was happy and I praised the Lord aloud.

Brother Palmer is a very humble, self deniing man and non compromising with sects. He contends earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints. He stayed all night with us and we tended to the ordinance of the Lord’s supper and washing the saints fest. A sister who lives nest door to me was with us.

My testimony now is that I am saved sanctified and cleansed from all sin through the blood of Christ.

Hamilton, Mich. Dear Brethren: I can just praise the Lord for the glory and sweet peace that I feel in my soul. Oh I can’t praise Him enough for what He has done for me. I am all sold out In the Lord and He has taken the pride all out of my heart. Praise His holy name forever! The dear blessed Jesus has healed me from all bodily afflictions, and I give him all the glory and praise. I am saved and sanctified just now. Pray for me. Your sister in Christ,

Der Brethren: — Enclosed find $1.00 for Trumpet. We prize it very much: it does us so much good to read the testimonies of the saints. It is over one year since we have met with any of you face to face, still we feel we have fellowship with you. Praise the Lord forever! We see by reading the Trumpet there is a goodly number scattered through this State, and that there is going to be a Camp-meeting in Aug. It is about 200 miles from us. How glad we would be to attend it, and to meet dear Bro. Warner and band once more; also dear Bro. Cole. God bless them and keep them is my prayer.

Fear not to be His bidding.
Ask not what then shalt say:
He’ll be thy mounth, and teach thee,
Will lead thee all the way.

Fear not, where e’re He leadeth,
Though kings you must as said;
Undaunted, show His wonders,
Thou surely must prevail.

Against the powers of darkness,
Against the hosts of sin.
And victory on victory
Thy soul shall surely win.

He’ll be thy month and teach thee,
Whatever thou shouldst say:
Then keep not back the message,
But preach, and work, and pray.

Now I want to say to the glory of God, that He is keeping us by His power, though wife and I have to stand alone, us it were with Jesus. He is a shelter in the time of storm. Praise His name!

He will provide a refuge.
When foes and fears betide:
An ark in time of trouble.
In which His saints may hide.

Secure from hate and malice,
And those who strive to harm;
His children rest securely
Beneath His sheltering arm.

Satan may rage against them,
Great kings their wrath display:
Strong enemies moy threaten.
Dark clouds hang o’er the way.

But in the Rock of Ages
A shelter still remains,
Where evil never enters.
Where peace forever reigns.

My hope is like an anchor, praise God! The prospect is transporting. Every thing of earth is liable to fail, but God’s Word shall never fail: in it we are trustin. We belong to the Church of the First-bon, and we are content. Praise the Lord forever! Jesus satisfies our longings.

Hope we shall hear from the ear ones in Ingham Co. Mich., through the Trumpet. May God keep them all in the bond of love and peace is my prayer.

Yours under the blood.
