In Memory of William Cunningham.

_____

He has gone where saints are going,
To the mansions of the blest;
He has gone where our Redeemer
Has prepared his people rest.

He has gained the realms of brightness
Where they dwell forever more;
He has joined the friends that love him
Over on the other shore.

He has gone where none are weary.
Where is raised no wait of woe;
He has gone to bathe his spirit.
In the rapturous, angels know.

Let him go for bliss eternal,
Allures his soul away, away;
And the victor’s song triumphant,
Thrilled his heart, he could not stay.

Let him go, why should he tarry?
What had earth to bind him here?
What but cares and toils and sorrows,
What but death and pain and fear?

Let him go, for hopes most cherished,
Blasted ’round him often lie;
Oh he has gathered brightest flowers,
But to see them fade and die.

Let him go where tears and sighing
Are forevermore unknown;
Where the joyous songs of glory
Call him to a happier home.

Let him go, he has ceased this dying,
He has gained life’s fairer planes;
Gone to join the myriad harpers,
Let him chant their rapturous strains.

__________

FAITH.

_____

“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation. It was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith once delivered unto the satans.” – Jude 3.

_____

GOD has given me a few lessons of faith that have been a great benefit to me, and others who have received them; and to God be all the glory. He also wants me to write on this subject to his glory, and I pray that God may bless it to the real good of those who read.

First we will examine it briefly from the human side; as natural faith, which is God given in the same sense that all our natural faculties are, that is, by natural birth, and is common both to saints and sinners. Natural faith may be defined as the natural ability to receive testimony, for by it the child learns to talk, receives knowledge and becomes useful. Natural faith is one of the most useful faculties of the human intellect, and has been therefore called by some, “intellectual faith;” and is of great value in all honest pursuits of life, and should be used in securing the “faith once delivered unto the saints.” Jude 3. Here is a special faith spoken of, which differs from natural faith. First, in the fact that no one naturally possessed it. Second, it was a deliverer [given] faith. Third, it was only delivered to the saints — “the fewest of all people.” Deut. 7:7. We see it was God-given and Divine. “Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.” — Heb. 12:2. James calls it “the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Jas. 2:1. Paul calls it “the faith of the Son of God,” [Gal. 2:20] and declared that he lived by it. Some say none but the apostles ever had that faith. Hear Peter on this: “Simon Peter a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Savior Jesus Christ.” — 2 Pet. 1:1. Here Peter confesses that he was writing to them that have obtained like precious faith; that is, the same kind of faith the apostles had. Peter had it and knew just what it was, and says it is “precious,” but it was not natural to him or them, for they had all obtained it, but not by their own righteousness, nor of themselves, but through the righteousness of God and our Savior Jesus Christ; and this is just the same way that they obtained salvation.

If salvation then is the gift of God, and Paul says it is. [Eph. 2:8] so is the like precious faith. They had to meet all the necessary conditions in order to obtain salvation, and then God gave it to them. Just so in “like precious faith,” God only gives it to them who comply with his word; and then it is “through the righteousness of God and our Savior Jesus Christ.” “According as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.” — Rom. 12:5. God does not deal out “the faith once delivered unto the saints” to them who are not saints or do not come to his terms. If we have not obtained this faith in its fulness, God is not to blame for it. When we comply with all his truth, and then take it by faith, it is ours to use for his glory. If “unreasonable and wicked men * * * have not faith” [2 Thess. 3:2] God is not to blame for that. It is their own fault if they do not “obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory,” [2 Tim. 2:10] and the faith once delivered unto the saints.

“Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” — Eph. 6:23. Here we see Bible faith, is again touched with Omnipotence, that is, God given, “faith from God” etc. Since Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith, it comes from God and goes back to him. On God’s part it is “delivered” and on man’s part it is “obtained,” and is only limited, when all the conditions are not fully met. “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. — Mark 9:23. “Therefore I say unto you, what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them and ye shall have them.” — Mark 11:24. Notice the conditions. First the desire must be right, the motive pure, enemies forgiven, etc. Any thing that would hinder faith must be removed. People work hard all the week serving the world, flesh, and the devil, and come to meeting and say, “If I have one desire above another, it is to serve God and get to heaven” or “My chief desire is to glorify God;” and all the while acting upon selfish motives, and wonder why they cannot have faith. The simple fact is they are not in harmony with God and have no foundation in His word for faith. “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.” — Psa. 66:18. “Ye ask and receive not because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” — Jas. 4:3. “How can ye believe, who receive honor one of another.” — Jno. 5:44. We see in these cases, faith is impossible, on account of impure desires. A man’s chief desire is the one that leads him, and if it leads him in the way of all God’s truth, he can have faith. It is absolutely necessary to come to God’s terms of salvation in order to have saving faith. Just so, all along the line of God’s truth, for his requirements must be met in order to have faith from God,” for God does not “deal” out faith to believe that which is not true. Here is a wide difference between the faith of God, and natural faith; While the real “faith of God” only believes the truth of God as it is true in fact; natural faith may believe any supposed truth, which may never be true, Many honest souls have been mistaken at this point, and sadly disappointed, because they only believed with natural faith, and God did not honor that nor give them his faith, because the conditions were not fully met. Suppose one is clearly justified, and wants to be sanctified, and is instructed that “faith is all you want; just believe you have it and you have.”

If that is all, I believe then that I have it.

“Testify to it, and if the devil tells you, that you have not got it, testify to it all the stronger.”

He believes he is sanctified, but has hard work to keep down carnality. The fact is, he has the “faith of God” that he is justified, and has the experience, having met the conditions and he has “natural faith” that he is sanctified, but has not the experience of sanctification, because he has not met the conditions of Bible consecration, and cannot have the truth of God as a foundation for the faith of God that sanctifies until he is wholly consecrated.

Again some one comes for healing and answers “yes” to all the questions, and the elders pronounce him healed, after complying with James 5:14, honestly believing it is so, and he testifies to the healing; but the healing does not take place at all, but he is told to keep on believing and testifying to it, and it will be all right; and he follows instructions and gets worse. The result is the man is left in doubt, and the cause of God is reproached. Who is to blame? God is as willing to heal him as any one else. After a thorough examination it was found, that he was not in line with the word of God, and while he thought he had as much faith as any body it was only natural faith and not “the faith of the Son of God.” After some time he comes to God’s terms, and gets the real faith of God and applies again for healing and is healed outright, and gets the glory, and this proves that God was not to blame at first, but the elders may have been hasty in pronouncing him healed. May God give us wisdom to keep in his order. To obtain real Bible faith, Bible conditions must be complied, with.

__________

WHY DIVINE HEALING IS A SUCCESS.

_____

DIVINE healing of our bodies, is as much a reality as in the cleansing of our spiritual natures, and each stand recorded alike in the Bible and both, have God for their voucher. God stands pledged to do the one as he does the other; and he has not promised to do either, unless we will comply with his holy word, but if we do this he is as sure to do the one as he is the other. God cannot lie.

In Psa. 19:7, David says, The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. And the law is as perfect converting (healing) the body. To convert is to change, so then healing our bodies is converting them from a diseased condition to a healthy condition. Praise the Lord! When a soul is dead in tresspasses and sins it is in a diseased condition, and needs to be converted, or changed, into the kingdom of God’s dear Son. Again when sick, what is this perfect law converting the soul? Believe that God is, and a rewarder of them that dilligently seek him, with all the heart. Repent and be baptised every one of you, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. — Acts 2:38. “But if we walk in the light as he is in the light we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we confess our sins, he is faithful, and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 Jno. 1:7, 9.

When we are thus cleansed, both the sick and the elders, who anoint and lay on hands, and all have a living faith in God, and in his word, his promises, then the “prayer of faith shall save the sick; and the Lord shall raise him up, and if he have committed sins they shall be forgiven him.” Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. — James 5:15, 16. Verse 14. Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

James was writing to his brethren in the church, and not to the unbelieving world, hence he calls them brethren. 1 Thes. 4:3. — For this is the will of God, even your sanctification. Abstain from all appearance of evil. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. — 1 Thes. 5:22-24. He will heal us when we call on him according to his word as long as he wills to keep us here, and when he ceases to heal us, then no earthly physician can heal us.

__________

A DRAEM INTERPRETED.

_____

BELIEVING that it will be to the glory of God to tell my dream and the interpretation of the same I will do so. Please notice first, I am and have been no believer in dreams, in fact very seldom have a dream, but there is too much truth in this one to let it go unnoticed, and I know that God was in it. I moved with my family not long since to a dwelling here, immediately by the side of a frame planing mill and factory, and I was asked by different friends whether I was not afraid of burning out on account of its close proximity to this mill: but this did not worry me for I knew the Lord would not allow this any sooner here than anywhere else. But after having this dream and seeing the nature of it, I concluded to ask for an interpretation of the same, and this is the answer which I received.

THE DREAM.

I was in my house and I heard some one on the outside cry fire, fire, fire. Presently there were more voices giving out the same cry, and it soon became a general cry of fire, fire, fire. I went to ascertain the cause and I saw fire in a building which was burning only on the inside. I went to see what it was, and as I came there, there was a wagon being run from the building which was also burning. The building was a very poor one. At this time the firemen arrived on the scene, but as they got there the fire on the interior of the building was out. It had died out without the help of the firemen, but the wagon on the outside was still burning, and so they turned their hose on it, but the more water they put on it the brighter it burned. They used all their efforts, but of no avail as they had to leave it burning and go to their homes.

THE INTERPRETATION.

Those who were out crying fire, fire, fire are God’s holy ministers who are out in the world going from place to place crying, as it were, fire, or in other words, preaching the true word of God in all its purity and strength. Jer. 23:29 — Is not my words as a fire saith the Lord.

The fire which I saw was the Spirit of God. The poorly constructed building which I saw was the discipline or class book of a denomination which keeps its members on the inside: and the fire burning on the inside was a faint glimmer of spiritual fire which some do experience for a time, but because of not living up to the Word, and having erring ones or blind guides to lead them, the fire dies out. The wagon which I saw run out was an honest soul who saw the corruption [that did not have enough fuel to keep burning] to which he had been yoked, and stepped out from the same. The firemen were those who are trying to draw God’s children back to serving the devil, again after they have set the world aside and have been washed in the blood of the Lamb. They are those who profess to be our friends, but spiritually they are our enemies. Acts 20:30 — Also of your own selves shall men arise speaking perverse things to draw away disciples after them. The more they talk and slander a child of God, the more and brighter the fire of God’s Holy Spirit burns. Praise the Lord!

As I am not a member of any sect, I could not understand why this dream should be revealed to me, and I asked God the cause of it. I received an answer that I was not doing my full duty, in order to keep this fire burning in those of my dear deluded ones. I then promised God that I would use all wisdom as he gave it to me, and would do all I could by his help at every opportunity to draw these dear ones out of this confusion. Oh that God will show to all sect people as plain as he did to me the wrong done there, and the wrong of being there is my prayer.

Dear readers, those of you who have been warned of the fall of Babylon and are still clinging to her; I beseech of you, come out of her, do not wait until you have waited too long, but obey God’s holy word and come out now. As long as you remain in Babylon you cannot say you have obeyed God’s word, for in Isa. 52:11 we find, Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing, go ye out of the midst of her, be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord. Jer. 51:6, 45 — Flee out of the midst of Babylon and deliver every man his soul, etc. Zech. 2:6, 7 — Ho, ho, come forth and flee from the land of the north, saith the Lord, For I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven saith the Lord deliver thyself O Zion that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon. Rev. 18:4 —  And I heard another voice from heaven saying, Come out of her my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins and that ye receive not of her plagues.

Here dear ones, you see if you want to be one of God’s people you must come out of her. It is not I, but God that is calling his people out. Are you one of them? If so, release yourself, stand for God alone independant of all sects, isms, schisms and iniquity, and God will keep his fire ever burning within you. But it you do not, you will be in the position referred to in James 4:17 — Therefore to him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not to him it is sin. And immediately the fire will die out. O dear ones keep this fire burning by standing out from all iniquity and obeying God’s word.

Your saved and sanctified brother in Christ,

B. F. Weikel.

THE PLAN OF THE FLOATING BETHEL.

The Lord willing we expect to make the building 26×70. The room for meetings is to be 26×50, 12 foot ceiling with 10 foot of an offset which will be 7 1/2 feet; also kitchen and baggage room about 9×11, and dining room 11×19, all on the first door; and the upstairs, 26×30, will be divided into five rooms, one 15×20, two 10×13. The dining room will be used by oarsmen when floating; also ten feet of open deck on the bow. The boat is 26×80 feet and is well built of good material, and was only built one year ago, as was stated in the TRUMPET lately. One hundred and fifty dollars will put up the frame and roof and floor it, but we have as yet received but $12.50 of that amount. The carpenters have consecrated themselves to do the work, and they have to wait while precious souls are crying for the truth. We see more and more the pressing need of the Floating Bethel.

THE SCHOOL.

_____

There comes a gladness to our heart when we think of school. The Lord makes it a pleasant work for us. We expect to begin school on the camp ground again the first Monday in September, the Lord willing. A new school building was much desired, but being unable to build one, we gladly and thankfully resume work in the old house. This is not large enough to hold all who wish to come, but another room in one of the dwelling houses will be fitted up for that purpose. With this however we will be unable to care for all who wish to come. There is repairing needed to be done, school desks and other school room furniture need to be purchased. Truly dear ones in the Lord, if we had the means we would freely make all the needed purchases, but having them not and having the work so much at heart, we are induced to speak of these needs, and pray our Father through you to supply them. Now as you read this dear ones will you not ask God to let you have some of the means he has entrusted you with for the purpose? The Lord bless you all. School books of any kind and other good moral or religious books, also educational journals will be thankfully received. Much responsibility is resting upon those in charge of the scholars and much wisdom from heaven is needed, so we earnestly ask the saints around the world to make mention of us in your prayers. We have proved the work and satisfied it is of the Lord, therefore can unhesitatingly ask you to pray for us.

Your saved brother,

C. Orr.

News from the Field.

Carthage, Mo., Aug. 3, ’93.

To All the Dear Saints, Greeting: Beloved in the Lord, rejoice with us and thank God for all joy and peace, health, grace and victory. O bless the Lord forever! Our brief stop in Clinton. Ill., was blessed with the salvation of several souls. Four were buried with Christ in baptism, and the last night we had a precious little ordinance meeting. Bless God, the little ones were much encouraged and built up in the present truth, and they will hold weekly meetings. Dear Bro. Johnson, who had been called into the ministry by the Lord, but finding himself out of harmony with all babylon, and not sufficiently discerning the body of Christ to move out alone with Jesus, was discouraged and overthrown. Praise God he was restored, sanctified wholly, and baptized, and expects to devote himself to the ministry. He was expecting to move soon to Hatford City, Ind. Let all pray God to bless and use him to His glory.

We bade farewell to the dear little flock at Clinton, on July 21, and came on to Springfield, Ill., were met at the depot by Bros. Addison and Daniel Kriebel, and conveyed to their homes four miles out of the city. On Saturday eve we began to blow the trump of God upon the streets, and the first sound thereof brought together an immense throng of hearers, who attentively listened to the sacred songs and burning truth. And, praise God, this first attack upon the enemy found quite a number of honest hearts who came forward and endorsed the truth. On Sabbath 23, we held two services in a meeting house, and one on the street.

On Monday morning 24, we left the rest of our company, Bro. and Sister Dillon, Bro. Hunter and Sister Frankie, and took train for the camp meeting at Granby, in southwest Missouri, arriving Tuesday noon. Bro. and Sister Sunderland’s tabernacle was pitched near their house in that place. They and Bro.’s Cordell and Murphy had been holding meetings previous, and the Lord was adding to the church daily such as were being saved. The next day arrived Bro. and Sister Wm. N. Smith, and Sister Nora Signs, their helper in the Lord, also Sisters Shoffner and Fink and their faithful yokemates, Bro. and Sister Guard Austin, and there was great joy in the camp of the saints, and in the beloved city. Likewise many dear saints came in, and several tents were pitched. The two little companies had been learning some of the new songs, and by the spirit of God there sounded out heavenly music. Two evenings we marched up into the business part of the city and gave the people that came together the glorious gospel, by songs and the preaching of the word. Every night the tabernacle was filled, and sometimes large crowds stood without and listened to the word. The Lord wonderfully blessed all His messengers in preaching the glorious gospel of God. The order was good, indeed remarkably so for the first camp meeting held there in the precious evening light, and especially good for being in the midst of a mining region. There was really no disturbance of the meetings.

We were made to rejoice and praise God for the glorious company of saints that came together there. Truly God had been blessing the labors of sister Sunderland, and Bro’s Britton, Cordell, Harmon, Farris, Murphy and others. Many have escaped out of the dying “Good Way”

Page 3

faction, into Christ, the way the truth and the life,” and into “His body which is the Church, the fulness of him which filleth all in all.” And that last offshoot of the Methodist creed is rapidly meeting with the decay, which its obstinate strife against some of the wholesome words of Jesus, must inevitably bring about. We were told their paper stated many of their preachers had stopped active service. One sister, hitherto connected with them, remarked, that she had for many’ years washed the saints feet as babylon teaches, in her heart I suppose, but now she was going to obey as Jesus teaches. She did so and proved the promise of Christ true. The work of salvation, compared with what we are used to seeing, moved slow, and yet, when we consider that the line between the false and the true holiness has only recently been established there, we must confess that more extensive fruits could not have been expected. A few souls were saved every day, and upon nearly every invitation. Twice the dear ones went to the stream and six happy souls were buried with Christ the first time, and the second time dear Bro. D. Keeton, of Granby who used to be used in the Good Way sect, in hopes of bettering it had left and joined a Baptist creed a few months ago, but found no satisfactory home. Now, thank God, he takes the whole truth, was blessed in washing the saints feet, and is devoted from this on to preach the whole Gospel. God bless the brother. We believe he will be very useful. Others during the meeting consecrated themselves to the service of God in the Gospel. On Tuesday evening we had a glorious ordinance meeting. Though quite a number of the saints from abroad had left, there were between 60 and 70 present to follow the footsteps of Christ, and receive the rich blessings of God, always found in an humble observance of his sacred ordinances. O praise God! The pavillion was filled with his glory, and all hearts flowed out in praise to God in the highest.

Bro’s Britton and Farris were ordained to the sacred calling of the ministry, and commended to God by the laying on of hands. May the mighty power of God abide with them. Amen!

Wednesday morn several were healed by the laying on of hands. Great and lasting good resulted from the meetings. Brother and sister W. R. Russel, precious children of God, have obeyed the call to work for God, and they expect to accompany brother and sister Sunderland, in the work. They move the tabernacle first to Coy. Mo. Brother and sister Murphy will go into the field with brother Cordell. They expect to go to Arlington, New York. Prsise God, the work is moving on rapidily in Mo. God bless the workers. We left the meetings still going on at Granby, and we expect more good news. Amen.

Dear Saints: We praise the Lord for his saving power that keeps us. We closed meeting at Guthrie, Okla. July 27. It was mostly a seed sowing time. One consecration for sanctification. Opposition was very strong, because of false teachers who had already been there professing holiness; but in works denying him. We arrived here on Monday and commenced meeting the same evening. Pray earnestly for us and God’s work at this place.

Dearly Beloved Saints of God: May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen! We are saved through the precious blood of Jesus and happy to report perfect victory in his name. After staying about a week at Geneva, we came to Praise Chapel, near New Pittsburg, Ind. Truly we were glad to meet the dear brethren and sisters at that place. We enjoyed meeting with saints, also the presence of God in a few days meeting. About five presented themselves to God at the mercy-seat, some to be reclaimed and others for the establishing grace, or sanctification. After that meeting, brother B. F. Roe, sister Fisher, of Winchester, and ourselves came in the neighborhood of brother Weimers, five miles southeast of Winchester, Ind., where the whole gospel had never been preached. We held meeting in a Campbellite meeting-house had good attendance and attentive listeners to the truth. Some acknowledged that God’s word taught a better experience than they had attained. And we believe that the seed sown in this place will spring up in some honest heart, and bring forth fruit to the glory of God. Some of them no doubt will come to this camp meeting. We came to this place to-day, expect to attend the camp meeting. After which we go to Dodge, Ky. Commence meeting Aug. 10, from there we go to West Va, camp meeting, September 1. After that to St. Clair, east Tenn. the Lord willing, thence to Agusta, Ga. that will be Oct. Now if anyone else can go before that time or even after we get there we say, amen. No doubt there is more work in the south than a dozen preachers can do all winter. We expect to spend the winter in that part somewhere, if the Lord wills, but pray God to send others olso. Amen. It seemed out of the question for us to go to the Wanesboro, Ga. camp meeting, in July. Having other appointments at that time. We earnestly request an interest in your prayers as we go forth in new fields, that the Lord may open unto us a door of utterance also that the word may work effectually and souls be saved.

Your’s and Christ’s, sanctified wholly.

To all the Beloved Saints, Greering: We are happy to report victory on the Lord’s side, in all the meetings we have held since our last report. The tabernacle meeting at East Liberty, Ohio was a success, notwithstanding the great mountains of prejudice we had to encounter. The devil’s reports ran before us and doubtless hindered many from attending the meetings, but thank God among the few attendants were found some honest children of God in Babylon who were happy to hear, and willing to walk in the evening light. From there we went to the West Liberty camp meeting, where we greeted about one hundred of God’s saints, in the fellowship and love of the Spirit, among whom were our much beloved Bro. and Sister Speck, of Burket, Ind. The power of God was manifested during this meeting in the salvation of a goodly number of souls and in wonderful faith healings. Some dear souls followed us from East Liberty, and gave their hearts to God during the camp meeting. God has now a little church in the vicinity of East Liberty of about fifteen members. Near the close of the camp meeting the ordinances of the house of God were observed. Seventy saints participated. Seven souls were immersed in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Let all the holy brethren pray for the blessings of God upon us and the work of the Lord in these parts.

Yours under the blood,

Dear Saints of God: May His rich blessings be with you all. Wife and I came to this place today, and found the children of God rejoicing exceedingly on account of the wonderful outpourings of His Holy Spirit. The power of God is being wonderfully manifested in the camp here, and scores of people are coming to the Lord and receiving the desires of their heart, by way of the fullness of the grace of God in their souls. Evil spirits have been cast out of some, and many delivered from the bondage of sin, for which we give much praise to God.

The work has only fairly begun, and during the latter half of the meeting we are expecting the name of the Lord to be glorified in the salvation of many souls. From here the Lord willing, I will go to the Beaver Dam, camp meeting Aug. 14-17, after which I desire to stop a few days in the meetings at Hollenberg, Kan., Vichy, Mo., and Arkansas City.

Yours in the love of Jesus,

SOME OF MY EXPERIENCE.

_____

Anacostia, D. C.

Dear Saints in Christ: May the dear Lord bless you all for His names’ sake. I do praise the Lord for his wonderful goodness to me, and the salvation of my soul through the precious blood of Jesus. I will tell you a little here how the dear Lord has had patience, and what love He has shown to such a poor miserable sinner as I was. And at the same time I was thinking that I was saved, for I did indeed receive many blessings at His hands while I was totally blinded, and was even trying to save others. How can the blind lead the blind. Will they not both fall into the ditch? I see it all now. Blessed be the Lord of heaven and of earth, for that He has had compassion on my poor soul and has opened my spiritual eyes. I wanted to know where I was going, and through His mercies He has shown it to me, blessed be His name forever.

I have been trained by my dear sainted mother to follow the Lord, but I did not want Him to reign over me. Oh, no; I wanted the world and I have fed the swine, as it were, until I was 33 years old. It was in St. Petersburg, Pa., where they had a revival in the M. E. church on the 16th of February, 1870, that I went to a place of worship, which I had not done since I left Switzerland in 1866.

These words reached my heart: “Put a pair of scales before you, and look back upon your life and see if the side of goodness goes way down; if on the contrary the badness and the iniquities of your sins go down, come and kneel down before the altar, repenting of the same and the true God of heaven who sees everything, if you repent truly, will abundantly pardon and wash you in the atoning blood that was shed on calvary for you, and for whosoever will come He will in no wise cast out.”

Well that fitted me exactly and I went home. I could not speak. The prayers of my sainted mother came back to me, and how I made her suffer. I could not sleep that night. Next evening I went again. After twenty-four hours agony of soul I knelt down and asked Him with a true penitent heart to be merciful on me, and I felt all at once a wonderful change. They told me the work was done. That night I went to bed, but no sleep for me; but not like the night before, tormented. No; it was singing, walking the room and laughing all night. My poor wife told me I was crazy, but I was not. The more she scolded me the more I was laughing. In the morning I went to see the pastor to ask him how it was, and if he thought that the merciful God could have forgiven me in so short a time, for I told him all, and he told me it certainly was done, and told me to come, now to church and tell the people how I was saved, and give my name to be on probation. So I went. (Though the dear Lord did not take me on probation, He did it at once, and fully). The work was finished, blessed be His name forever. Afterwards I was faithful to my dear Savior and done what I could. There was a call for some one to go as a missionary and I was willing to go, for I was sure that the Lord was calling me to preach the word. The conference laughed me to scorn, but I did not care, I was bringing sinners to God. But it was the cause of my tailing afterwards. Since that I went out of Methodism and went to New York city where I joined the Baptists and did some missionary work and God blessed my work. After that I went to Lancaster, Pa., and established an undenominational mission with an Englishman, and there preached the gospel several times, and the Lord was with me and blessed me wonderfully in words of His Holy Spirit. Now I am more determined to go and preach the true gospel, not like man (sects), but the gospel of our dear Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, for only He has called me.

Dear saints of the Lord I am not half done. What I write here is only a feeble part, and if the Lord permits I will tell you the rest, and also of my backsliding, but I have suffered very much. If some dear mothers who are praying for sons or daughters, if they don’t come now, in the name of the Lord cease not to pray for them. Be not weary, the Lord will hear. Pray without ceasing and faith believing, for it was by the prayers of my sainted mother that I came to my heavenly Father. And now may the blessings of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit be with you all now and for ever, Amen.

Dear Saints: I praise God for salvation that keeps me all the time. I am glad to report victory in my soul. Last Sunday I was an exorter in the F. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.” Praise the Lord, his saints are glad when they hear of one talking the narrow way. Pray for us. Dear Saints of God: May the blessings of God rest upon you and keep you from all sin and daily increasing in the power of God. I am praising God for full salvation. O praise God for what he has done for me. He has saved me from every evil work. We just had a good meeting held by Bro. Stover and others which was a real refreshing and soulstirring time. God has called my husband to go and labor for perishing souls; but, praise God, he gives me. strength to bear all things joyfully. I do know He has supplied every lack in my soul, placed me on the highway of holiness where there is nothing to disturb our peace. Praise God no ravenous beasts, nothing to stumble over, yea, not even a stumbling block before us. It fills my soul with glory to read the Trumpet and the glorious books sent out. O praise God for salvation full and complete. I know God has called me to go out and labor in his vineyard and feel that the time is not far away when he will open the way and say, Walk ye in it. Amen to the whole will of God.

OBITUARY.

Liverpool, England, July 25,  1893.

Dear Saints: I was requested while in America to give notice of the death of Sister Shick, wife of Charles Shick, of New Hope Pa., which occurred Jan. 12, 1893, and neglected reporting the same. Sister Shick enjoyed full salvation when she fell asleep. She was born Feb. 24th 1835, and joined the Lutheran sect when young, living in the same for over twenty years with out salvation as she expressed it herself, but through the hearing of the gospel she saw her condition and was justified and some time after was sanctified, also healed of a cancer. She was a woman of great faith and lived a humble life, before God and her fellow men. The sister leaves a husband, three sons and two daughters to mourn her departure, of which the husband and daughters are saved. And we pray that the sons may follow the example of their dear mother who took such an interest in their souls, and expressed while living, such a desire to see all her children saved. May God keep those saved that are saved and convict the others that they may give their hearts to God. Amen.

NINE YEARS AN INVALID.

_____

To all the Dear Readers and the Afflicted: May God wonderfully bless and comfort you as you read some of his dealings with me. I cannot enumerate them all with pen and ink, but will attempt to give some truths as they have been manifested unto me for both soul and body.

I was converted when sixteen years of age, and was married at the age of seventeen, in the year 1873. In February, 1874, I was taken sick, and from that time was a helpless invalid until July 18, 1883.

When I was married I felt it my duty to have family worship, but as my husband was not a Christian, I was timid, and put it off, thinking I should do so soon. But the burden kept growing heavier, for I realized the great importance of obeying every leading of the Spirit, but I knew but very little about how to make a real consecration of all things to God at that time.

As I continued to suffer and grow weak, I thought much about the future, and the importance of being prepared to meet the blessed Lord who had suffered so much for one so unworthy as myself. Sometimes preachers would come to visit me, and I would hope that they would say something to give me light, as my poor soul was hungering after something, and I knew not what to ask for, nor how to obtain it. None of them gave me any help in that direction.

In the spring of 1881, my husband thought he would take me to the Eureka Springs of Arkansas, to see if the water would do me any good, as he being a physician, had done all he and other physicians thought would be of any benefit to me. The waters, however, gave me no permanent relief. I felt a little better for a short time but soon became weaker than ever before, insomuch that for six months at a time I was blind; and also lost my voice, and for some length of time was unable to speak above a whisper. But, oh, the glorious light that had begun to spring up in my soul during this time of seeking relief for the body at the Springs!

The dear Lord sent those to me who taught me that there was deliverance for the captives, and how to set the prisoners free; and that it was my privilege to be made whole both soul and body. They showed me by the Word of God that consecration by faith in Jesus, would bring about sanctification of the soul, and his cleansing blood would destroy the carnal mind which is enmity against God. See Rom. 8:7, and also the scripture which teaches us to trust God for the healing of the body. I had been taught that the day of healing was past; but when I would read the scripture, and see that God is no respecter of persons; and that, he is “the same yesterday, to day, and forever;” also how Jesus used to heal all who came unto him, I believed that he loved his people as much now as when he was here upon earth. But before I was healed my consecration had to reach the point where I was willing to do anything the Lord would have me do, and I was blessed in talking of the goodness of Jesus to every one who came to see me. Oh! the bliss and constant peace of my soul was more than I can find words to express. Instead of the longings, and doubts and fears, there was a sweet communion which words fail to explain, but those who have found “the honey in the Rock,” understand my meaning.

I often lay for several days at a time in a cold prostrate condition, and almost a death-like perspiration upon my body and limbs, so cold that they could not be warmed by friction or stimulants.

I felt a great desire to be baptized, and as I had learned to look to Jesus to be guided by him in all things, this scripture kept coming to my mind: Except ye be born of water, and of the Spirit, ye cannot enter into the kingdom of God. — Jno. 3:5.

I felt led to have a holiness preacher to baptize me, but I was too weak to be taken out of my room; so they brought a bathtub into my room, and I was baptized in it. Then I felt so anxious to partake of the Lord’s supper, and the same preacher, with a few other Christians came and we had a glorious time commemorating the death of our dear Savior.

We were living in Thayer, Kan., at the time of my healing. A little girl was feeding me my breakfast, and as I was taking some grape-juice and bread, the words of 1 Cor. 11:25, came to me, and I said: If thy will, accept it as in remembrance of thee, it shall be; and oh, such a witness of His holy presence came with such power! I realized the healing power was present to heal me. I said, The Lord has healed me! and I began to sing “It is done,” and then said, What shall I do? The Spirit of the Lord said, Leap and rejoice. And again, Arise and walk. I told the little girl, who had been feeding me, to tell my husband to come in. When he came, I said, Doctor, I am healed; will you believe it? Let me up so I can walk. In the name and strength of Jesus I arose, but cannot describe the change; it was as if I had been carrying all I could possibly live under, and the load suddenly removed. The change was so great, and made me so light and free, that I felt just like running all over town.

The day before I was healed I heard the noise of wings over me. This was repeated three times, and I did not understand what it meant, but as I was so near death’s door, supposed that the Lord had sent for me. Shortly after I was healed I was one day reading my Bible, and read Malachi 4:2: “But unto you that fear my name shall the Son of righteousness arise with healing in his wings.’’ This explained matters and made it all plain to me.

After being healed, I felt impressed that in order to keep victory for my healing, I should have family worship three times a day; and thus let my light shine for the glory of God. I have since given birth to two children, and each time got up in as good health as before.

With much love and sympathy to all the afflicted, I am resting upon the Solid Rock.

Mary J. Sweeney.

CORROBORATING TESTIMONY.

_____

In regard to what my wife has written, I can say what she has stated are facts-  She had been sick about six years before I took her to the Eureka Springs of Arkansas, with the hope that she would, recover her health.

Her disease was a female trouble. She had antefluction and anteversion of the uterus, also mitritus, with ulcers at the os of the worst character. During the six years she was scarcely able at any time to be on her feet, or walk a step.

I had a large practice at that time, but gave her all the attention I could. I perused several of the best works on Jinecology, such as West, Thomans, Monday and others, and consulted some of the best physicians, but we could not reach her case.

We remained at the Springs, with no benefit from the water. We then came to Thayer, Kan. and remained ten months until my wife was healed. During the ten months she seemed more prostrated than before. She was weak, debilitated and nervous, with quick intermitting pulse, cold perspiration, loss of vision to a great extent, and could not speak louder than a low whisper.

At the time she was healed I was sitting in an adjoining room writing. When she sent for me to come into the room, as I entered I was utterly astonished, and most agreeably surprised when I found her sitting up in bed. She reached out her hand and said, “Doctor, I am healed, I feel like I could walk all over town.” She arose without assistance, and walked to a rocking chair in the room and sat down, rejoicing and praising the Lord. I frankly confess, after witnessing the long protracted complicated case, and then see her get right up in the midst of it, though an unsaved man, I was afraid to deny the healing power of God.

Springfield, Ill., July 22.

To Sister H. P.: Grace and peace from God the Father, and from Jesus Christ our Savior, be multiplied unto you, through the knowledge and obedience of the truth in all things. Your letter has been sent to me, and I take pleasure in answering. I am thankful that, God has shown you ever since your conversion that his church is not any sect whose names are written on earth, — see Jer. 17:13, — but the body of “believers out of every denomination that have their names written in heaven.” “Christ being the head of this spiritual body, and God set every member in the body as it has pleased himself.” Well, since you see that, you cannot consistently, with the light you have, acknowledge anything else as the church. Since God’s church have their names written in heaven, you should not have yours written on earth. Since God’s church is one body, you should not countenance a sect, a cut off faction. Since Christ is the head of the church, you should belong to no sect, over which Christ is not head. The head of an institution is its law making power. In God’s church we are told “there is one lawgiver, who is able to save and destroy.” — Jas. 4:12. Who is he? “The Lord is our lawgiver.” — Isa. 33:22. Therefore he is the head. — Eph. 5:23, 24; Col. 1:18; Col. 2:18, 19.

Notice carefully the last text. “Let no man beguile you,” etc., “not holding the head.” To join a man’s institution, anything that man has founded, is letting go Christ, the head. Read also Col. 2:8-10. Hear this warning, Beware lest any man spoil you, etc., “after the traditions of men, after the rudiments of the world and not after Christ.” “Ye are complete in him.” Then you should join and hold to no religious creed gotten up in this world and organized by man. And as sure as you do, it will spoil you. Now while Christ is the head and lawgiver to the church which truth you see. You cannot consistently belong to the Free Methodist sect, of which the general conference is the law-making power; as you will see by reading the discipline. Those heady preachers, resolve themselves into a head, usurp the province of Jesus Christ, and legislate laws, and bind burdens on the people, and thereby follow the example of the pope, and as God, sit in the temple of God. You admit that into the church, God sets every member as it pleases him. Why then let man take you into something else? God never set the members into the Free Methodist or any other sect. You “sometimes make a stir among other sects” you say. But dear sister it you dared teach and walk in all the word of God, you would soon make a stir in the F. M. camp.

You say you are not married to the F. M. sect. Then you should separate, and not live in spiritual adultery with that body, while at the same time you, if saved, are married to Christ, and are set into his body. But dear sister I write not these things to chide you, for we have all been educated in sectism, and it takes some time for even an honest soul to get out of unscriptural ruts. But I assure you that the apostle told the truth when he said, “Ye are complete in him,” Christ. So we need no additional sect, creed, or human systems. So, be assured, dear sister, that the church Jesus founded is perfectly practicable. You cite us texts of scripture to prove that it is right to have elders and deacons That is all right. But these officers were not ordained in a sect organisation as you suppose. A sect, is a cut off faction and division. But the same apostle that directs that elders be ordained in every city, says “there should be no schism in the body,” no sects. So you see he did not authorize sect elders, or sect organizations. But the elders and deacons of which we read, in the scriptures, are in the body of Christ which is the church. And the Holy Spirit put them in their office. — Acts 20:28, and not the vote of man.

You think we must have sect organizations in order to hold meeting houses. The saints, out side of all sect organizations, who only abide in the body of Christ, which is not a sect, or faction, but the whole, find no difficulty in building and holding meeting houses. They have houses in many places. The deed is made to the church of the living God at that certain place, and the elders and deacons, being the only Bible officers, are made trustees, and their successors. Just so, every difficulty arising from taking the New Testament to the exclusion of every vestage of human addition and machinery is only immaginary. You, think a meeting house without a sect organization to hold it, “would bring strife and division.” But actual facts have proved, as well as does the Bible teach that “strife and division” are not caused by simply abiding in the word of God, but they always come from creeds and inventions of men.

“Is not form needed as much as hoops on a barrel to hold it together?” The scripture teaches form and order. We are to show the form of the house as well as the house itself. Eze. 43:8-22. The ordinances of Christ, require a perfect conformity to the specific form of their observance. But it is a mistake to suppose that anything of a formal nature, especially the creeds and forms of man’s invention, keep God’s children together. These human forms are just the devil’s wedges to cause strife and division. They always divide instead of hold together. Nay, the love of God is what keeps the church of God together. Hence we read,

And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. — Col. 3:14.

That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgment of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ. —  Col. 2:2.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. — Rom. 8:35—39.

It is a glorious truth that the church that Jesus founded is all complete, both for the individual member, and for all the operations of the entire body, and it is also true that all discord, strife and divisions come from foreign elements.

HELL.

_____

THE wicked shall be turned into hell. God in his message of inspiration to man speaks of a hell, which he would not do, if there were not one. He speaks of it as a place of punishment for the wicked, and that is the reason the wicked do not like to hear the doctrine insisted upon. There are many who would persuade themselves that there is no hell, not because the testimony of inspiration is not definite, but because they wish it were not so. However, we might wish it were not so, the fact remains, and our unbelief cannot make the truth of God any the less true.

And as to its duration, the very strongest terms are imployed in scripture to denote length of duration. And also the intensity of the anguish of its inhabitants. Now we might wish to modify, or ignore, or distort, or wrest the plain declaration of God’s testimony in Revelation to these truths, they remain true. And though we may take the devil’s cordial of unbelief until our consciences is so lulled to sleep that we may not wake until the flames of eternal fire is lashing our quiet consciene. But all the while the truth exists. The wicked shall be turned into HELL.

But who are the wicked thus assigned to the flames of eternal fire? In answer to this question we have only to look into the scriptures: “Whosoever committeth sin is of the devil.” But many professing Christians, lost in a pretended humility, that they sin every day. “Whosoever committeth sin is of the devil.” But one asks, what is your standard of sin? Better ask what is the Bible standard. But I do find many who decry the use of tobacco and the amusements of the ball room, who adorn themselves in immodest apparel and in the wearing of gold. Such persons are setting up a standard of their own, and thus ignoring God’s standard. To them is applicable the admonition of Paul, “O, man who art thou that repliest against God.” Now there are many who would twist, bend, and wrest God’s word to suit their own whims of unbelief and to meet their own wishes. But remember you will be judged by the unbending word of God. Since this is true, would it not be wise to accept the whole truth and not rest until you are in a condition of heart to love the whole truth.

Dear Saints: I feel like it would be to the honor and glory of God for me to write my testimony. Praise the Lord! it is blessed to walk in the light of God. O the beautiful light that makes the way so plain. Praise the Lord! I have been suffering very much from severe pain, but the Lord healed me in answer to prayer. May he have all the praise. Pray for me that I may continue in the faith.

Dear Saints and Brothers in the Lord. I take pleasure in writing a few lines to the Trumpet. I do thank the Lord this morning for His great and unspeakable gift of his spirit in my heart. I do feel saved in the Lord. And praise the name of Jesus who has paid the great price. There is a moving of the Lord here among some of the people. Brother Bradley has been holding meeting, here near Abita Springs. There are some few opposers but we pray to God that he will save them. Three have been baptized and some more are waiting for the return of Brother Bradley. Dear saints, pray for me that I may keep saved and sanctified by the power of God.

Your brother in the Lord,

Dear Children of the Living God: I can say that I am still in the narrow way and trying to go up higher. I am living a life of peace and happiness which I have never done before in all my life. And all the glory be to God. Oh how he takes care of me. Last winter he raised me from a bed of sore afflictions. Oh the pains I had to endure. I was thinking my time had come to be called home and I left it all with the Lord and his children and He did wonderfully heal me. I couldn’t help myself at all. I learned a valuable lesson through my sickness which I will not forget. My faith is stronger than it was last summer. I take all my little troubles to Him and he always helps me so wonderfully. I find the more I trust Him the better I get along.

He has taken away my appetite for all kinds of drink, like tea, coffee, beer and a good many more things. He keeps me from reading novels and story books and from talking slang and jesting and all worldly pleasures. I am not interested in any thing of the world, and I bless God that he keeps me every day clean and unspotted from this wicked world. Oh I am persecuted, but He is by my side and holds me up: and I am so glad. I do hope and pray that my husband will soon yield himself unto the Lord. Pray for him. I can truly say the Lord is my shepard; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the vally of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. — Psalms 23. What precious words they are, and truly I am one of God’s sheep and can realize the meaning of them. Dear sisters and brothers pray for me that I will be kept ever looking to Him, and serve Him without fear.

Your sister saved, sanctified and kept by the power of God,

Mrs. Lizzie Clark.
