Hear The Cry.

_____

Brothers, hear the cry from the dark domain,
Where they have no knowledge of the Savior’s name;
See the darkening night, hear the plaintive cry,
“Send us now the gospel or our souls must die.”

CHORUS.
Brothers, they are crying, crying unto you,
“Save us from eternal shame.”
Trembling on the brink of the world of woe,
Dying for the knowledge of the Savior’s name.

Dying, all unconscious of the deadly ill,
Frenzied by the fever of the fatal chill,
Blinded by deception of the world’s dread foe
Standing on the margin of eternal woe.

Sadly they are crying, though no voice we hear.
Sinking to perdition, yet they feel no fear,
Silently they are pleading by their sin and shame,
Crying for the knowledge of the Savior’s name.

Christian, you have feasted on the Savior’s love,
Hastening to the joys of the world above;
Will you with indifference hear your brother cry,
“Send us now the gospel or our souls must die?”

WISDOM.

_____

So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Ps. 90:12.

MUCH has already been said and written concerning wisdom, but I feel of all the blessings bestowed upon the saints of the living God, none are more essential than the heavenly wisdom given by God himself, that preserves and makes the face to shine. Prov. 4:6; Eccl. 8:1. Therefore it is needful that it be exalted more and more. Wisdom is the principal thing; so says the Word. Exalt her and she shall promote thee, she shall bring thee to honor when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an ointment of grace, a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee. — Prov. 4:7-9.

Wisdom is the right application of knowledge; therefore a man may have a great degree of knowlege concerning some certain things, but if it is not applied in the right way and at the proper time, it will profit him nothing. For instance a smith may have perfect knowledge as to how a pick should be sharpened and tempered, but after having it heated and brought to the proper shape, he desires to have it tempered just right; but if he dips it in water when very hot or when cold, it is either spoiled entirely or not benefited any by the operation. Just so in this life of work for Jesus, if we act or speak before or after the time appointed by the Holy Spirit, it is of no profit, but gives the adversary of our souls a chance to sow seeds of discord, or to bring in some of his schemes and put them into effect, many times even among God’s people, and this is the place he desires to work.

Many times Satan uses very small things to accomplish his purposes, and by the leadings of the Holy Spirit. I will point out a few of the many things that the devil uses to a great advantage. And if any of the dear readers of the TRUMPET have run aground by any of these breakers, may you henceforth stand aloof from all such, by and through the power and wisdom of God. First never use a Bible term out of the place intended by the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, and never apply it in a way to prove a point when it does not prove it. For instance, the kingdom of God is righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost. This kingdom without a doubt is formed within every saved person; but to apply the words of Jesus in Luke 17:21, in a way to prove this, is not doing justice to the holy word, for Christ was speaking to the Pharisees. The Emphatic Diaglott renders it “among you” instead of “within you.” This is also inserted in the margin. In 2 Cor. 1:15 we read, And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit. The plain rendering of this text if let alone is sufficient to prove that the apostle had reference to sanctification, the second work of grace; but some have gotten into errors sometimes in trying to refute the sectarian idea. As those who fight the two works, say, as grace and favor are synonymous terms, the apostle preached at Corinth and the people received a favor from him. After awhile he returned, then they received the second favor, etc. To refute this some say Paul had been there twice before this time, refering to ch. 12:14 and 13:1, and now is going the third time, that the Corinthians may receive the second benefit the third time he goes to Corinth. But the plain rendering is sufficient, being this: Paul having confidence in the saints because they had acknowledged him in part, and he with the other ministers were their rejoicing, verse 14, and Paul being now ready to visit them the third time, 13:1, and having confidence in them says, In this confidence I was [past tense] minded to come unto you before, [which would be the second time] that you-might have a second benefit. As we must preach so none can gainsay or resist what we preach, it must be the Word, and interpreted just as the Holy Spirit dictates.

Again if on account of former teaching some dear soul fails to see and understand just as others do at first do not condemn, but in the meekness and love of Jesus show them where they are wrong and help them to get rid of their erroneous ideas. Many a true soul has been cast down because wisdom was not used on this line. And if we hear any one professing to be saved use words that seem to be idle words, let us never go to them in a cold manner as sometimes is done and say a sanctified person is saved from all such, which would be to discourage rather than build up. The force of habit being so great, many times one newly saved will perhaps use such words unconscious of the evil that comes from the same. This line of holiness being progressive, we are to kill out the little foxes just as soon as we find them intruding upon our rights. We do not kill out these to get sanctified only as far as we know, but being sanctified we have power over all the ites, as the Israelites did after entering the land of Canaan.

We are taught not to use our liberty as stumbling blocks to others. The word tells us if we follow on to know the Lord, his going forth is prepared as the morning. — Hos. 6:30. Step by step the Lord has brought his people up from the bondage of sectism to the glorious plane of oneness. With each step the power of God is manifest more and more. And at the present time God’s anointed people being free from Babylon and all her idolatry are blessed with the power of God as never before, since the darkness of Romish night began, yet the church of the living God as she emerges from the dark wilderness of confusion in these last days is but in her infant state. But she is increasing with the increase of God, and following on to know the Lord, moving as the great Omnipotent King leads forth; she is clothed with the beautiful garments of purity, and invested with the power of God that excels all the powers of the enemy. The time has come when God’s people must be true to him and true to both saints and sinners, and be so settled in God that no compromise be made with any false spirit, or even sympathy must not exist to such a degree that the Lord cannot have his way at all times. There never was a time since the formation of the world that as many foul spirits, adorned in different costumes, ever swept over the earth as a mighty deluge of ungodliness as at the present time; hence the need of more wisdom. Hell is not only enlarged to receive all who are traveling the way of death, but the very gates of perdition are open, sending forth in mighty torrents every deceiving and corrupting element that the enemy of souls can invent to capture those who have clean escaped from the fire, and bind those that are free in Jesus.

But through Jesus, the wisdom and power of God we can overcome. More solidity is needed among many that profess to be out on the plane of holiness. And the Word tells us just what is needed to give the same. Wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of the times. — Isa. 33:6. What times? The days in which the Lord is exalted and Zion filled with judgment and righteousness. — Verse 4. That time has come, in the evening of the last dispensation, when the bride of Christ is preparing to meet her husband and all the saints of the living. God can cry aloud with Paul, Oh the depths of the riches, both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! Rom. 11:33. This wisdom comes from above. And James tells us it is “first pure.” It makes wise unto salvation, and preserves those who possess it from every defiling influence, but follows holiness and truth. It is “peaceable.” It makes no disturbance and causes peace to reign wherever it abounds. It is “gentle” and causes men to bear with the infirmities of the weak, showing kindness unto all. “Easy to be entreated;” causes men to be reasonable and ready to receive instruction and admonition when sent by the Lord. “Full of mercy and good fruits;” it gives the merciful nature of Jesus that pities all who are in want, or those that curse and despitefully use us, and continually bears fruits of love, joy, peace, long- suffering, meekness and temperance, etc. “Without partiality;” makes no difference in person, state or standing, but stands true to the law of God without respect of persons. “Without hypocrisy;” always speaking plain, never smoothing things over to gain the confidence of any one, and never appearing in different forms before different people, but all who possess it are living epistles, known and and read of all men, the same at all times, rejoicing in the hope of the glory of God and applying the God-created powers in the way that is all to the glory of God.

Wisdom is a pearl of great price, but the poor of this world being rich in faith, have the key that unlocks the great storehouse of God’s wisdom, and reveals the many precious things that are hidden from the world and made known unto his elect. May God bestow upon all his dear children much heavenly wisdom that will preserve from all evil. Amen.

W. A. Haynes.

__________

CAN ONE BE SANCTIFIED AND BE A SECTARIAN?

_____

THIS question comes up before us wherever we go. No. — He that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one, for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren. Heb. 2:11. For centuries God’s: people have been scattered in the different creeds, but now is the gathering time. Woe be to the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture, saith the Lord. Therefore thus saith the Lord God of Israel, againt the pastors that feed my people, Ye have scattered my flock and driven them away arid have not visited them. Behold I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the Lord. — Jer. 23:1, 2.

In the building of sectism it seems that God’s little ones knew no better than to live in them, but now God is giving them one heart and one way. For thus saith the Lord God, Behold I, even I will both search my sheep and seek them out. * * * so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. And I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be: then shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture, and shall feed upon the mountains of Israel. — Eze. 34:11, 12, 14. Praise God for the good fold and fat pasture! The blind leaders of the blind say we don’t want the sheep out in a pasture or on the commons with no pales around them. But God’s sheep (his children) do much better in a rich pasture than in a dry pen with pales around them and space enough between the bars for the world and the devil to get in.

We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks. He says, I will gather out the remnant of my flock out of all the countries whither I have driven them, and bring them again to their fold. True, God had and has yet some truly justified children in sectism; but the carnal mind is the cause of division, as is seen in 1 Cor. 3:1, 3, and as sanctification takes out the carnality there is no cause for division, hence no division. Jesus prayed, Sanctify them * * * that they all may be one. Sanctification takes the ism out of a person and prompts him to get out of the ism as soon as possible. If it does not take the sectism out of them arid make them one with all God’s people, it is not what Jesus prayed for them to have. Some of the sects have recently decided (they say) to accept the doctrine of sanctification: but it will do no good to profess it unless they get it, and if they get it, it will cause the division walls to fall. Jesus says we do not put new wine in old bottles, else the bottles burst. Moreover if a man gets in his soul what Jesus meant by sanctification, the sect is very willing to let him go. We See many who contend that they are sanctified and still stay in the sect; saying they want to get the brethren to see the light, but the bed is shorter than a man can stretch himself on it, and the covering narrower than he can wrap himself in it. Isa. 28:20. Yes the covering can not keep those who have the Holy Ghost from seeing they have not got the experience.

Dear brethren, we want by the word of God to show the people something better than the isms of this world, and in our Jives prove that it is better. Where men have left out part of the word of God and put in some of men’s opinions, we want to do as Paul told Timothy, PREACH THE WORD, bring the whole Word as a foundation for them to build upon. Sanctification is the work by which God makes his people one. For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may may all call upon the name of the Lord with one consent. — Zeph. 3:9. Now I beseech you brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing and that there be no divisions among you, but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and the same judgment. 1 Cor. 1:10. What mind? Let this mind be in you whicn was also in Christ Jesus. Phil. 2:5. That you may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ — Rom. 15:6.

THY TESTIMONIES ARE WONDERFUL.

Dear Saints: I feel led this morning to write my first testimony. I can testify to a full and complete salvation. I was first justified, and afterwards I presented my body a living sacrifice and the Lord sanctified me wholly. I know this morning my name is written in the Lamb’s book of life. I can praise the dear Lord for saving me from sectism. I was a Methodist and that was all; I was no Christian. Oh praise the Lord, I can say to day I am a Christian. Pray for me that I may ever be found humble and low at the Master’s feet. Your sister in Christ,

Dear Saints of God: I am glad to write my testimony to the TRUMPET and to tell of the evening light of the gospel that shines about me. I do know that I am in God’s church. Praise the Lord! I am free from sectism, saved and sanctified and kept by his power every hour. I am rejoicing in full salvation that keeps me free from sin. Praise God for his wonderful keeping power! I do thank the Lord that he has organized a church in this city, and has placed the members in the body as it pleased him. Dear saints, pray for us that we may continue to keep saved and grow stronger in the Lord, and that souls may be saved out of Babylon.

Dear Saints: I believe it would be to the glory of God for me to write my testimony for the TRUMPET and tell something about what the Lord has done for me. He saved my soul when I was a child, and to day I am saved and sanctified, healed and kept by the mighty power of God. God has wonderfully healed my body at different times. I went from the Grand Junction camp meeting to visit my folks in Indiana, and while there I was taken with something like bilious fever. Then how I wanted to be where the saints were in the strength of almighty God. I got up and started, and got to Grand Junction. I still had a burning fever, and was so sick. Brother Byrum rebuked the devil and the fever in the name of the Lord. That night I got up and went with Brother Grffiin out to his place, something over two miles. During the night the fever all left, but left me very weak with not much appetite. In about a week the assembly meeting commenced on the camp ground. I went and after being helped wherever I went for about a week, dear Bro. Byrum asked the Lord again to heal me, and God gave me sweeping victory over diseases and weakness. It is wonderful what the Lord will do for those that will let him. Praise his holy name forever! To day I am saved and sanctified and kept by power divine. Pray for me and also for my unsaved boys. Your sister in Christ,

Lucinda Martin.

God has some workers here that can sing and pray, but we need some one to explain the word. We believe God is working by his judgment here, and some are asking if we intend to have meeting. May God send some of his anointed ones here. We would like meeting by the last of the month or the first of the next. Where is Bro. Palmer or Wickersham? ANSWER TO QUESTIONS.

_____

In answer to a question respecting certain teaching in Maccabees used by Romanists in support of their doctrine, we simply say, that book is not inspired scriptures, was never so held in the early centuries, and is therefore no evidence on scriptural doctrine.

  1. Would like to have you views on Matt. 24:14.
  2. On Matt. 24:15.
  3. On Matt. 24:32, 33.
  4. Also Matt. 24:34.
  5. Also please explain Col. 1:23.

A seeker after light,

W. H. Payne.

The first reads as follows: And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. — Matt. 24:14. The pure gospel, and abounding grace of the kingdom of heaven, which is “righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit,” Rom. 14:17, the possession of which Divine Kingdom. in the dark night of Romanism, and, through the cloudy day of Protestantism, few people knew was their privilege, shall be now rapidly published in all the world for a witness to every nation. This will extend to all a chance of real salvation, and prepare all to be judged without excuse if in sin.

Answer to second. When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the Holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand.) — Matt. 24:15.

The question put to Christ in verse 3, was twofold. “Tell us when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world.” “These things,” relates to the destruction of the temple of which Christ had just spoken. The coming of Christ and end of the world will be coincident events. The language of the 15th verse answers the first question. It refers here to the Roman army, and its ensigns, which the soldiers hoisted on the holy grounds and sacrificed to them as gods. When the army thus appeared, they were to know that the desolation of the city was nigh. See Luke 21:20.

Answer to third. In Matt. 24:31- 33, the Savior answers the second question, and gives the signs of the approaching end of the world, namely which signs are now transpiring in the gathering of God’s true children out of all divisions, into the “unity of the Spirit,” and into the “one faith” of the gospel. It is being accomplished by the messengers or true ministers of God, who sound the loud trumpet of the everlasting gospel.

Fourth question. Verily I say unto you. This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. — Matt. 24:34.

There is a twofold application to be made to this language, applying to the events contained in the two questions. First, the generation then present should not pass away until that awful destruction would come upon Jerusalem; which was fulfilled in A. D. 70, just 37 years later. And with regard to the end of the world, the generation that now behold the signs of the Savior’s coming, shall not all pass away until his appearance shall be seen by every eye.

Answer to fifth. The text reads as follows: If ye continue in the faith, grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister. — Col. 1:23. The Bible Union Version renders, “Which was preached in the whole creation.” Dean Alford, “In all creation.” A similar expression is found in Rom. 10:18. The words under question may be understood as referring to the commission that Christ gave, namely that his gospel should be preached to every creature. It was thus, in a sense, sent to all men. Besides, it also doubtless alludes to the general and rapid spread of the gospel to every nation of the then known world, which was quite small compared with the present known world.

Please explain 1 John 1:8-10.

Mary Walker.

John writes this epistle to young converts who had obtained pardon. 2:12. He writes for the following three objects: “That ye also may have fellowship with us.” — 1 “That your joy may be full.” — Verse 4. “That ye sin not.” — 2:1. Now all this is found in the second grace of entire sanctification, which is a perfect cleansing in the blood of Christ.

If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another; and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” — 1:7. This was the experience he desired them to attain. But should any little babe in Christ like these, who has only received their sins forgiven, begin to say, “I need no further cleansing, I got it all at once,” “I have no sin” to be cleansed away, such certainly deceive themselves, as John says in verse 8. “If we say we have no sin,” namely, “I write unto you little children.” If not yet sanctified wholly they needed to confess their inbred sin, or otherwise they could not obtain the cleansing. Hence the next verse says, “If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins (such as need pardon) and (on the same conditions of confessing inbred sin) to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” This was the experience those pardoned disciples needed to insure a life in which they would “sin not,” have perfect fellowship with the saints, and have the fullness of joy. The false doctrine, that we must all be sinners in this life, is drawn from a misconstruction, of verse 8. “If we say that we have no sin,” etc. But this was equivalent to saying, “If ye say,” etc., for he plainly says, ” I write unto you,” etc. — 2:12. The use of the word “we,” instead of ye, is a form of speech adopted by the apostles, very generally; it expresses

Page 3

the humbleness of the speaker, and makes the command more mild and soft. When Paul said to the Hebrew brethren, “Let us go on unto perfection,” Heb. 6:1, he evidently meant the injunction for the parties addressed, as you can see in verses 11, 12 where the same command is issued in other words, and directly enjoined upon them. There is a great difference between the words, “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves,” and “If any man says he has no sin,” etc., as too often carelessly misquoted. The former expression simply meant the unsanctified converts addressed. The latter is not in the Bible. To see that John did not teach that we all have to be sinners you have but to consider what he further says, in the same epistle. 2:1, 6; 3:1-10 and 4:17.

  2. What is the second beast?
  3. What is the mark of the beast?

QUESTIONS.

  1. Marriage being a divine institution, Matt. 9:6; Mark 10:9, is it a sin for unbelievers (knowing the scriptures concerning marriage) to join together with unbelievers in marriage? If it is a sin, what dots repentance imply in such cases? does it imply that the unholy bond must be dissolved?
  2. The word of God forbids saints joining in marriage with unbelievers. 2 Cor. 6:14. Now any saint who (knowing the scriptures) marries an unbeliever loses their salvation, do they not? Can such be restored to the favor of God, etc., without repenting of and undoing the evil?
  3. What are the teachings of the church on these things? Yours in the one faith,

J. B. B.

Answer to first. Marriage is a divine institution, but the foundation of it is laid in natural affection, of which God is the author. Sinners have natural affection as well as Christians, hence it is no sin, either against the law of God in nature nor in any passage of his spiritual law, the bible, for them to marry when there is no legal impediment, and they are attracted by pure natural affection. Of course the matrimony of holy persons has a higher seal of divinity than that of sinners. For to the glow of pure natural affection is added the uniting bond of supernatural love shed abroad in the heart by the Holy Spirit.

Answer to second. Doubtless a person, knowing that the scriptures forbid the children of God to marry sinners, would lose salvation in doing so. As for the possibility of pardon without separation in such cases, we would not encourage any one to presume upon the mercy of God by deliberately and knowingly violating his Word with the hope of any pardon at all. A willful sin in the act of an unscriptural marriage may fix the soul in eternal damnation. But if God sees such a step taken chiefly through weakness, rather than willfulness, and he therefore sees fit to forgive the party on conditions of repentance whether he demands separation or not, we will praise God for the deliverance. Under one class of circumstances he may demand separation; under others, not. Two things can be substantiated by the Word. First, it is one thing to go into an unscriptural marriage, and another to be in. The former is forbidden, we all know. But so far as separation being required in the second case, there are circumstances under which it is positively forbidden. — 1 Cor. 7:13.

Second: To our mind the scriptures recognize the fact that a wrong step in matrimony cannot be retraced and undone as wayward steps in other things can. We know of nothing else that a Christian is forbidden to engage in which he is not also forbidden to remain in if he becomes saved. Therefore we conclude that rules respecting restitution in other things, will not always apply to matrimony. Therefore while under some circumstances we would be safe in demanding a dissolution of an unscriptural marriage, in other cases God only knoweth how to lead, and let his will be done.

Stanley, W. Va., Jan. 3, 1894.

To the Church of the First Born, Greeting: We closed meeting on the night of the first of this month near Berea, W. Va. It was a grand feast to our souls. The congregation was composed of seven different sect beliefs, but they received the word with all readiness and searched the scriptures daily. A case of healing was performed by the Lord. One sister was very sick, so much so her husband had to lift her up in the bed. We anointed her according to James 5:14, 15 and in about ten minutes she got out of bed, dressed and went and got herself some water; and in a short time she was being fed by her little daughter and husband. She was quite well when we left. The husband although a sinner was made to say, “I believe the Lord has healed my wife.” We thank all of the people of that place for all of their kindness toward us. We had four other calls for meeting but our word was out, and as we were expecting Bro. Lindsey and company to join us at Stanley, W. Va., we left them in the hands of the Lord. Pray for us much and” the work in West Virginia. Yours all for Jesus saved and sanctified,

J. F. Elifritz and J. K. P. Whilecotton.

San Diego, Cal., Jan. 2, 1894.

Dear Saints: This morning finds me resting in him who is able to keep us from falling. The new year has come, and one day spent in the service of my Master, with a more determination to live this coming year more close and devotedly to his cause than ever before. The church here at this place held an all day meeting New Year’s day. The power of God came down upon us, and we all felt it was good to be here. Some were reclaimed; some a deeper consecration for soul, body and spirit to be preserved blameless until his coming. We held a street meeting a 2:30 P. M. and quite a crowd gathered. The truth was revealed to many, and we trust that the good seed which was sown on the 1st day of the new year by God’s little ones, will bring forth thirty, sixty and a hundred fold. The people of this city cannot say at the judgment they never heard the word of God. There are three bands of workers upon the streets every night, telling of the story of the cross. There are very few that are stepping into the light, because it will cost them ALL their sins and filthiness of the flesh. Pray on, dear saints, that God spare his terrible wrath a while longer upon their wickedness, and that they may be saved. I am glad that I have not the desire that Jonah had to see Nineveh destroyed, who got angry because God had mercy on that wicked city and spared it a while longer. I believe it is the prayers of God’s true saints that is keeping many wicked cities from destruction and probably the whole world. Pray for me, dear ones, that I may be used more and more of God, and that I may be an instrument in bringing many souls into this great evening light. May God bless you all. Yours, set a part for the gospel,

S. C. Shaw.

Dearly Beloved Brethren in Christ, Greeting: May grace and peace be multiplied unto you and enable you to stand in all the will of our God for Jesus’ sake. Amen. We feel led to write you a few lines as to how the Lord is working around this old burnt-over place. As soon as we got some of the necessary things of life attended to the Lord sent us a call from across the river or Union Hall school house, one of the first places in all this neighborhood to have the fullness of the gospel preached. At this place the doctrine of the gospel had been thoroughly taught and Babylon completely whipped, so much so that all know the way and the price thereof. But God had a few faithful ones who have lived down much prejudice and many hard sayings. Not long ago the people commenced to show a desire for meeting and the interest of their souls was awakened by a few prayer meetings, and the brethren sent for us to come over and help them. Went over Dec. 23, and had meeting that night, Sunday and Sunday night with good result. We were obliged to close on account of school, but went back again on the following Friday and continued over Lord’s day. The people are much interested. The Lord showed us that the people wanted to hear salvation. Some of the brethren from other places were present and were used of God. Your brother and sister, fully saved,

H. W. and L. Hechler.

Richardson, Tex.

I left Richardson, Dallas Co., Texas on the morning of the 20th of November, with Bro. R. S. Slate, to go to Kerens, Texas. On the night of the 21st commenced meeting about six miles from Kerens, where we met Brother and Sister L. Slate whom we had not met for over two years. The dear Lord had been using Bro. Slate very much in sowing seed, but he had not seen much fruit. We commenced delivering the word in love and fear of the dear Lord, who began to open the people’s eyes to the truth. Two souls were made to step out in the evening light with glory in their hearts. One was an aged sister in her 76th year. The Lord did wonderfully sanctify her soul. Truly it was new days, months and years to her. In her former teaching, she thought women had no right to speak in public; but when sanctified the Lord cut her tongue loose. Meeting lasted over two weeks with glorious victory for King Jesus. There were five private houses opened for meeting during the time of our meeting: and we had meeting at each house. After the meeting had continued about ten days, Brother and Sister Brake, came from Richardson to help in the battle, who was much used by the Lord in giving the word. We left there on the 8th of Dec. and came near to Bazette where we stopped and had meeting on Sabbath day and night. The people were much convicted. On Monday morning before we look our departure we had a glorious feast which resulted in the salvation of one precious soul and the healing of her afflicted body, and which resulted in the sanctifying of her husband. We give God all the glory. We landed at Richardson, Dallas Co., on the 14th of Dec. Met with the dear saints the same night, and had a glorious waiting before the Lord.

My testimony to day is I am sweetly saved, and abiding in Jesus and well pleased with my lot. Though sundered far from my family, God is wonderfully keeping my soul. Dear ones, pray that God may let me have them with me in the near future, for they are much used by the Lord in singing the sweet anthems from the throne. From your saved brother in the one body,

E. Cox.

Dorr, Mich., Jan 2, 1894.

Dear Saints: Praise the Lord! I feel led of the Lord to testify of the wonderful healing power of God, and the glorifying of his dear name, backing up his word with power and might. In the afternoon of Dec. 20, 1893, two weeks ago, we were sitting in Bro. Newton’s house, one and one-half miles southeast of this place, it being about half past four o’clock; when Bro. Frank Germain called our attento the fact that Bro. Joseph Monkin had driven into the barn yard, which was quite a surprise, as he lived some eight miles south of where we were stopping. We arose, went to the door and Bro. Monkin was weeping. He said, “Come quick, Bro. Collins, I am after you. My wife is very sick and we are expecting her to die.” He at first refused to get out of his sled at all, but we insisted, and he came in to warm while we got our wraps on. In the meantime we enquired of the Lord. He said, “Go, it will be to my glory.” Praise the Lord! We started for Bro. Monkin’s home, arrived about dark, waited for the coming of Bro. Egleston and Bro. Hidenburg, as they had said they would be there. The sister was suffering very much with congestion of lungs and asthma. She was all given up to the Lord, perfectly resigned to his will. We laid on hands and prayed for her healing in the name of the Lord. She was healed instantly, and arose at once and called for something to eat. After eating her portion, laid down again and went to sleep. Those that had been called to nurse and watch her went to their homes; and we all that were in the house went to bed. In the morning she arose and got breakfast. Glory to God! Honor and power and dominion be his forever more! Just one week from that time, Bro. S. Newton’s son, a young man about eighteen years old, fell while pushing a buggy into the barn and ruptured his knee cap. He had to be helped to the house, and God healed him instantly. Hallelujah! Dear saints, we desire your prayers that God may humiliate us and keep us low at his feet, just an empty vessel, clean and pure, fit for the Master’s use, always abounding in the love of God. We are looking for the Lord to send us some more help. Bro. Bement has been with us a few days. God is calling out many precious souls from Babylon. The devil is roaring. He has turned loose all his forces, and they are raging. We are praising the Lord! Now unto you that are called to be saints, I would write in behalf of the Children’s Home at the Junction. Little ones, earnestly enquire of the Lord concerning this, and if you have a spare dollar, or clothing or supplies of any kind, communicate. Gal. 6:6; Phil. 4:14; 1 Tim. 6:13; Heb. 13:16. I write this to you that God may be glorified and his kingdom built up. Yours, saved and sanctified,

Hartsells, Ala., Jan. 2, 1894.

Dear Trumpet Readers: God bless you all and preserve you faithful unto the end, such as are saved, and save those who are lost in sin. We are happy to report once more through the columns of the TRUMPET that we are kept by the power of God through faith, with victory and glory in our souls. Praise the Lord, and to him be all the glory. We are glad to report victory for the Lord in this part of his vineyard. The work is steadily moving on and in creasing, praise the Lord, though we feel sometimes that it is not moving as fast as it ought to. We have just closed a meeting at Mt. Zion, four miles east of Hartsells, in which we feel much good was done, though greatly hindered by some discording elements. We hope the church here will soon stand perfectly clear from everything that is not pure for God, not that the church is not pure, but that the saints will sink deep enough into God to be able to discern every element that is not pure and be able to execute judgment upon the same, so there will be no dead weights to hinder the work. The way to accomplish this is for each one to see that they are perfectly pure and dear with the baptism of fire, an eternal weight of glory in their own soul. First of all then, let their light shine.

One soul was sanctified and one or two restored to justification who through neglect of duty had lost the victory or grace of God. Several were stirred up to a forward move for God, and the flames of holy fire and love begin to burn in their souls. May God help them to continue this forward move until their whole soul is aglow with the eternal weight of glory. Then the glory will be a defense upon all, Isa. 4:5, and they shall not be deceived by any of Satan’s devices. Some seem to think very little about moving forward for God and advancing in the grace of holiness. Now I would say it is no child’s play to move forward for God in the grace of holiness. First is needed deep humility of heart and meekness of spirit, then a real living faith which must also be put into action, then an intense love for God. And the same love and like sympathy for immortal and perishing souls for which Jesus died. As we look upon this world, as the currents of water move toward the great ocean, so the mass of humanity is moving toward the lake of fire. May God stir up every child of God to a forward move for God against sin, to the rescuing of perishing souls. In the last meeting we held before the one just mentioned, there were five or six claimed pardon. A number have professed, some pardon and some sanctification in different places. To God be all the glory. We have a few places to visit here yet. If there are any who desire meetings in Southern Alabama or Florida, and desire our labors, please write to us soon, to Hartsells, Ala., and if the way is open we shall lie glad to reach those parts. We desire an interest in the prayers of all the saints. Your brother and sister fully saved.

Dear Trumpet Readers: We are glad to report victory on the Lord’s side. There is all joy and peace in believing. So we believe what God says; and we are truly thankful that God is making known his will to us in the way that he is. Our trust is stayed on his Word, and God is all we take him for by faith. I desire that all the saved ones that read these lines pray that I may be kept by the mighty power of God. Your brother saved and in the one body of Christ,

Dear Trumpet Family: May the blessings of God rest and abide upon you. May Israel’s God supply all your needs spiritually and temporally out of the riches of his fulness in Christ Jesus our Lord. My heart is full of love and gratitude to God for salvation. The endless, boundless love of God to me is drawing my heart nearer and nearer to him. Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness and for his wonderful works to the children of men. I do realize that God is leading his little ones farther out in the ocean of his love than ever before. May all the dear saints with me keep very humble at the Master’s feet and learn of him who was meek and lowly in heart. From your sister, all the Lord’s,

Dear Trumpet Family: May you ever abound in the abundance of God’s grace. Praise God for salvation full and free! We are saved in the blessed evening light. Glory to God! Free from all sects and creeds, preaching the everlasting gospel with the Holy Ghost sent sent down from heaven, contending for the faith once delivered to the saints. The tide of opposition runs high, but our God gives us the victory, and we triumph in every trial, and reign in this life with one Jesus Christ. There are about six or eight that are out in the evening light. We have meeting on Thursday evenings and on Sunday afternoons. We ask all the dear saints to pray for us, that the borders of Zion may be extended in this place and throughout this dominion. There are here and there honest souls that are hungering for the pure gospel. May some of God’s flying messengers come flying through this land, and set the blessed evening light burning, that the elect may be gathered up everywhere, and the bride made ready for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. Your brother and sister,

CALLED TO PREACH THE GOSPEL.

_____

IN the old dispensation the Lord chose the Levites to be priests and high priests, and out of the various tribes he chose prophets and told them that they should “hear the word at my mouth and give the people warning from me,” and this they did, according to 2 Pet. 1:21. But in the New Testament dispensation, “Christ was made heir of all things,” and having received commandment from the Father what he should say, and what he should speak, he called unto him his disciples, and of them he chose twelve whom also he called apostles; and he said unto them, “Ye have not chosen me but I have chosen you and ordained you that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain.” “Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high he led captivity captive and gave gifts unto men * * * and he gave some apostles, and some prophets, and some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers.” — Eph. 4:8-11.

Most people agree that God did call and qualify his ministers and workers in the days of the apostles, but do not think it possible for him to do the same in our day, deeming the ecclesiastical colleges more efficient than the Holy Ghost, to qualify God’s preachers. But a sad mistake. Ministerial schools and training institutions may fit men up to teach modern theology and a worldly religion, and ably fill the pulpits in sectism; but they cannot preach the pure gospel of Jesus Christ, nor fill any place in the body of Christ. No man on earth who is qualified by the Holy Ghost to preach, can hire himself out for that purpose and retain the Spirit of God. “Ye have freely received, freely give.” “For the gift of God is not bought with money.”

God has not changed his way of doing business since he sent the Holy Ghost on the day of Pentecost, and has never notified us in his word that he was going to make any change before Christ comes. For after that in the wisdom of God, the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. — 1 Cor. 1:21. Here we see that salvation work follows preaching, hence the two are coexistant; and if salvation work continues unto the end so will preaching. And people “are saved by grace through faith,” and “faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God.” And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach except they be sent? 1, sent; 2, preach the word of God; 3, hearing; 4, faith; 5, salvation. But how does God send? “So they being sent forth by the Holy Ghost,” Acts 13:4. The Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. — Acts 13:2. They were called and sent by the Holy Ghost. And John said, A man can receive nothing except it be given him from heaven. And no man taketh this honor unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. — Heb. 5:4. And if a man strive also for masteries yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully. — 2 Tim. 2:5.

WHOM DOES GOD CALL?

“The husbandman that laboreth must first be partaker of the fruit.” “I have commanded my sanctified ones. I have also called my mighty ones for mine anger, even them that rejoice in my highness.” “The people that do know their God shall be strong and do exploits.” For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble are called. But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise, and God hath chosen the weak things of the world, to confound the things which are mighty. And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: that no flesh should glory in his presence. — 1 Cor. 1:26-29. The selfsame Spirit, (Holy Ghost) dividing to every man severally as he will.

HOW DOES GOD CALL?

ANS. By qualifying, which is the same as ordaining, (I mean God’s ordination). “I have ordained you that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain. The ministerial qualifications are, first, the grace of God in justification and sanctification, which includes the Spirit graces and fruits of the Spirit and second, the gifts of the Spirit, such as prophecy, faith, knowledge, wisdom, exhortation teaching, discerning of spirits and gifts of healing, are all profitable and effectual in the work of the ministry.

CALL MADE KNOWN.

This is what many people do not understand. This also is by the Spirit, and the operations of the Spirit’s communications to us are various, such as impressions, inclinations, desires, visions, dreams, sanctified judgment, directing the mind to certain scriptures which point out our duty, etc., also the voice of the Spirit to our spiritual understanding and as distinct as the natural voice of a person to our ears. In fact many persons on hearing the voice of God’s Spirit have enquired of others if it was them that spoke, like as did little Samuel, before he was acquainted with God’s voice. But the bestowing of the gifts settles the call and always makes the same obvious to others.

THE OBJECT OF THE GIFTS.

The gifts are for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ. And the possession of one or more of the gifts designates where the Father hath placed the member in the body, the church, and also dictates what the member shall do; viz., use the gift bestowed. Hence he says, So we being many are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace of God that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; or ministry, let us wait on our ministering; or he that teacheth on teaching; or he that exhorteth, on exhortation, etc. — Rom. 12:5-8. As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it with the ability which God giveth; that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 1 Pet. 4:10, 11.

HOW TO OBTAIN THE GIFTS.

Many readers perhaps are anxious to know when and how the gifts are obtained. Some of them may be given coetaneous with the baptism of the Holy Spirit; especially teaching or exhortation, and sometimes faith, or prophecy. I could give examples in the word and also cases that I have observed, were it necessary. But in most cases under my observation the gifts are bestowed after persons are established by and in the grace of holiness. How obtained? First desire them. “Follow after charity and desire spiritual gifts. — 1 Cor. 14:1. Second, “Covet earnestly” — vehement desire. “But covet earnestly the best gifts.” — 1 Cor. 12:31. Third, “seek;” ask God for them. “Ask and ye shall receive: seek and ye shall find.” But these are gifts, and God hath promised them; then why seek? “I the Lord have spoken it, and I will do it. Thus saith the Lord God, I will yet for this be enquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them.” — Ezek. 36:37. Forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church. 1 Cor. 14:12. Like children with their earthly father, they desire something, and as it rests upon their little minds that desire is intensified (covet earnestly), which prompts them with boldness to open their hearts to Father and tell him what they want; and if it is best Father gives it. “But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.” — 1 Cor. 12:11.

THE BEST GIFTS.

The apostle holds up the gift of prophecy as the choice gift and most to be desired; because the church received most of its edifying through it. By it deep and mysterious truth of divine things are revealed and made plain; knowledge being the result. See Eph. 3:5, and 1 Cor. 13:2. In the using of this gift, edifying others, faith is essential. — Rom. 12:6. Teaching is also an important factor, 1 Cor. 14:3, 31, in the impartation of the revealed truths. And to make the teaching effectual, testimony and exhortation are indispensible; for “he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, exhortation and comfort.” And “the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” “That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging [testimony] of every good thing that is in you in Christ Jesus.” “Wisdom is profitable to direct.” “Therefore get wisdom.” And thank the Lord, “Ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all be comforted.”

Oh dear brethren, don’t be afraid of these precious gifts, but be desirous of them that ye may excel to the edifying of the church, and God’s work will move on. It is blocked in many places because the little ones are too slow in living to their privileges on this line, especially in this western country. Let me “exhort you by the coming of the Lord and by our gathering together unto him,” “covet earnestly the best gifts.” “So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ;” and remember that the Father is more willing to give good gifts to them that ask him than parents are to give their children bread. If you want to work for God, let him give you something to work with, some gift of the Spirit and you will bear fruit and increase.

AUTHORITY AND POWER.

God’s authority and power accompanies these precious gifts. Jesus says, “All power both in heaven and in earth are given unto me. Go ye therefore and teach all nations,” etc. “ And lo I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” Notice Mark 16:17, 18 in connection with Matt. 2:18-20, and you will see that the commission is coupled on to the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the gifts, hence the Spirit and its gifts precedes the “go ye” or the “ sent.” This you will learn by complying with Luke 24:49. But tarry ye until ye be endued with power from on high. And if you think you are called to preach, quit always talking about it and go to work, and if you have kept your call secret, now reveal it upon the house top by lifting up thy voice like a trumpet. If you are not certain about your call, do not go out with older workers, for God will bless their labor and you will take it as an evidence of your calling. But go alone, “call an assembly,” and open your mouth, and if God fills it with burning words, and sinners are convicted and get saved and the saints are edified, continue in well doing. Amen.

CALLED TO PREACH.

I will now relate my experience how God called me, or rather how he made known the call. While growing up I took a great aversion to the life of sect preachers, and resolved in my mind I never would be one regardless of the consequences; and never anticipated being a minister at all. I was a backslider for six years previous to my getting reclaimed and sanctified, during which time I made many resolutions to do better and live right, but to no avail. The last two years of which I meditated much on religious subjects, especially on sanctification and the church of God as set forth in the New Testament.

A few days before being reclaimed, thoughts came into my mind like this: “If you get saved and sanctified you will have to preach, and you know you don’t want to do that, therefore you had not better go on and be saved.” I began to reflect and resolved I would not preach unless God wanted me to; and if I submitted to his will and he willed that I should preach, he would work his will in me, so I would want to preach and not be contrary about it; and also Gob would not call unless he qualified, and if he qualified me for that work that would be one thing I would be good for if nothing else, and also I would rather do God’s will than anything on earth if I was sanctified.

And I determined not to stand back from getting salvation on account of a liability of a call to the ministry. But I supposed if I was ever called it would be just as soon as I was sanctified. So when sanctified no call came; at which I rejoiced, thinking it was all over with and I would never be. called of God to preach. I found within me a wonderful thirst for the word of God. I studied it almost day and night. How marvelously plain the Holy Spirit opened it up to my understanding! I was astonished, and rejoiced and praised the Lord for the new beauties I was discovering and the rich mine so easily worked. I hardly had time to set down and enjoy the fruit of the land of holiness, but was hurried on by my guide to behold greater things than I ever thought of before. As it is written “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard neither have entered into the hear, of man the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit.”

After the lapse of about nine months a protracted meeting was held near my home and several embraced the evening light. Finally the subject of ordination was mentioned, and each one was exhorted to find out God’s will concerning them. My prayer was like Saul’s when on the way to Damascus, “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?” His answer to me was this: “As every man hath received the gift even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” 1 Pet 4:10. I have taught you, now what are you going to do with it? Will you put your light under a bushel, or let it shine? “Freely ye have received freely give.” Teach others also the way of salvation. Up to this time I was hardly aware of the gift of teaching already bestowed, my attention having not been called to it, although I had been teaching some privately but nothing publicly to amount to anything. I then enquired of the Lord about being ordained and he refered me to 1 Tim. 3:6, “Not a novice.” So “I conferred not with flesh and blood,’ but began at once teaching the saints publicly, and any one that would receive teaching, fully realizing God had given me. the gift of teaching I soon found that the saints were depending entirely upon me for their teaching. I urged upon them to read and search the Bible for themselves, but to no avail. I thought it would be too much for me to farm and work hard and try to give them enough spiritual food. So I resolved if they “did not work, neither should they eat,” but failed to see where it would put me. Therefore we all nearly starved to death, spiritually, that summer; but in the fall we sent again for ministerial help and was refreshed in the Lord. Then we promised God if there was a hungry soul on earth that would relish God’s word we would feed it if in our power, God helping us. Was then ordained by the laying on of hands, realizing God demanded advanced steps of us; also obtained more of the precious gifts. And towards spring I felt God’s spirit urging me out in the evangelistic work, and every block was removed, leaving me to decide. I looked forward, then back; to go was to advance God ward; to stay at home longer was to retrograde; and I said yes, Lord, and went, nothing doubting; and God blessed me in so doing.

God did not reveal to me how long I should continue in the evangelistic work. All I could say was, I know I am in God’s order now. Until last spring a year ago did he give me to understand that preaching his gospel was my life work, and I had best make my decision to that end, and to take no step to hinder my progress in that direction. Then could I realize I was “separated unto the gospel of God.” And I am highly pleased with God’s way of doing business. Your humble brother, sanctified, preserved in Jesus Christ and called,

Geo. L. Cole.

Dear Brethren: I feel led of the dear blessed Lord to write my testimony once more. And it is that I am yet saved by grace, through faith in God, and kept by power divine. I have proved God’s grace sufficient to this present moment, and I am just trusting God for the future. Praise God for salvation full and free, saved to the uttermost. May God bless all the dear saints everwhere. From your brother and sister,

Wm. and Catharine Ault.

Dear Saints of God: I praise God for this wonderful salvation that keeps us free from sin. I am away from any of God’s people and among Babylon. Oh how I do love the true word of God, I am praying the Lord to send some of the Holy Ghost ministers to this place, for many poor souls have never heard the true word of God preached at this place. I am alone with Jesus, for my companion is yet of the world. Yet God’s grace is sufficient for all that will trust him. I am trusting in all his promises he has left for me.

To the Dear Brethren, and Readers of the Trumpet: I will write my testimony this morning, and make a confession of my past experience in neglect of doing my duty. I want to say that I once was out in the clear evening light, but through my compromising and failing to preach the whole truth at all times, I lost the power of God out of my soul, though I never gave up professing. At times I could feel the love of God, and at other times I could not. I want to say that my greatest trouble was caused by working with those that did not accept the whole truth; more especially the doctrine of washing the the saints’ feet; so while I worked, they of course forbade me preaching that, and working with them. So by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ I claim the victory over it all. Now my brethren in Christ, I ask your prayers. My life shall ever be consecrated Lord, to thee. I love the GOSPEL TRUMPET, because I believe it teaches the truth in its fullness, uncompromisingly. In the past I have been ensnared by the Good Way and the Anti-ordinance isms, but I want to say, praise God, I am delivered from them both; and I expect to keep the whole word of God in obeying all of his ordinances. I know God is with me this morning and will be with me while I stand up for all the truth of God. I know that God sanctifies me wholly just now. Glory, glory, hallelujah! Jesus says, ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. Oh how it frees my soul in obedience to the whole will of God! Wife and I have been at work in the field this fall and winter, but on account of some debts, I was forced to come home and resort to manual labor. I want to work for God all the time, and spend all my time in his service. I would love to work with some older worker if God should so lead and open the way. God has blessed our labors much in the past. Just as soon as I can pay what is due of my debts I want to cut loose forever to work for the Lord. Dear ones, I desire your prayers that the Lord may open the way for me to get free from all debts, that I may go and work for him. I love to work for God. Bro. Caudel is now holding meeting at our school-house. Three were converted last night, others are seeking. We are expecting great things from the hand of our God, who worketh all things according to the counsel of his own will. Glory to God in the highest! On earth, peace, good will to man. Pray much for me. Your brother in Christ, saved and sanctified wholly,

Jas. A. Montgomery.
